- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talking Tech Podcast.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: My name is Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McDonagal.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: Tristan, how you doing today, man?
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: Hey, I'm doing excellent.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Just had a lot of time in the sun last week.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: So much sun that we forgot to go to our microphones.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: We uh we brought our stuff to possibly record an episode, but uh we drank too many trulys.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: So uh, you know, we took last week off.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: We apologize, but uh we're back this week.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and a lot of news happened during our vacation, so we're excited to talk about it today.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: That's true, that's true.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: Uh just to start us off, Tyree Wilson, the uh transfer from Texas AM, defensive lineman.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: Uh he has converted from the Colts.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: Thank you, Lord.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: Getting somebody out of that horrible university and into our beautiful university has always a good thing.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: It's always a good thing.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: You know, he's a he's a big old dude, 6'6, 260.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: Coming in to help out our defensive lineman.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: And what's something that people are always saying about our lines?
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: We need more big guys.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: This feels good.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: This feels good, especially whenever we're uh we're we're grabbing a guy from AM.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: That doesn't stink.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: So it's always kind of nice to remind the Aggies that we're here, and uh we'll always be a thorn in their side that we've always been.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: So it's just uh great, great data for tech football.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: No doubt.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: He had um class of 2018, he had offers from Texas, uh, he had interest from Florida, Baylor.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: So some big schools, uh a guy to be pretty excited about, I think.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Now, Steven, uh, can he play this year?
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: So it looks like right now, no, he needs to get a waiver from the NCAA to be immediately eligible for this season.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Uh, so we may not see him until 2021.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: But um either way, it's still good to have these transfers come in and and be a part of the program.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, and he's still got three years of eligibility left.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: So excellent.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: He could potentially be here for a uh long time.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: So yeah, we want to start off with uh with the Tyree Wilson news uh because that just happened what I think today.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: So um good news over there on the on the defensive line front for Texas Tech.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: We always like hearing good news for uh tech football defense.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: That's 100% sure.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: Uh so we did uh during our last episode, we started recording before we learned of the uh passing of Tommy McVeigh, the director of football operations, for 33 years at Texas Tech, and uh under five different head coaches, obviously an icon uh to not only Texas Tech football, but uh just the university in general.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: An institution in Lubbock to for sure.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: And you there was an absolute outpour from everyone that he touched, uh over social medias, over uh eulogies.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: It was it was such a touching moment to see the community come back together, even if you've let uh they've left Lubbock.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: Um, and obviously this man uh had an impact on players well beyond their time at tech.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: So you that's something that can't be taught.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: This man was just naturally uh kind, naturally inclusive.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: He's just that kind of that radiant son that you want in a locker room uh to help alleve the stress that these players are obviously going to be feeling.
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: Um, and yeah, I saw several players say they it was the nicest man they ever met, and it's just it hurts them to to watch him go.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you need guys like him uh to be a part of your football program.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: Guys that are just, you know, he's a he's a powerful figure for the team and for the players.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: He's a motivator, he's everything you would want uh uh to be a part of your football program and to be director of football ops.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: So um I got to I got a chance.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: I got to watch the uh Memorial Service Forum, uh, had some great speakers.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Uh Kingsbury was out there, Wes Welker, Matt Wells.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: It's good to see Cliff coming back.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: You you can tell he still loves the university, even after his his rough coaching stint here.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: But um it's nice to see him back and talking about a guy that was that was really close to him for for his five years and and even during his playing days.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: I I think I think that was really cool of him to come back and talk about him.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: Uh even though Cliff's coaching career is uh it wasn't what we wanted, he's still gonna be a tech golden boy forever.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: He's always gonna be one of us.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: Um even Lincoln Riley uh had some nice things to say about him, um, even though he's at a rival school, you know, it's just some love like that just doesn't die.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh there's it's just a brotherhood that would never break.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: Um, so it's it's and talk about a character, you know.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: He's an okey.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: Um, he so he's familiar with the planes.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: Uh he before he came to uh Lubbock, he was a high school football coach in Kansas where he did well, but that wasn't what brought him to Lubbock.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Football did not bring Mr.
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: McVeigh to Lubbock, he was a uh an appliance and T V employee.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: He came down here to uh compete with some local companies until he uh got in touch with Mr.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: Bike Dykes uh and the rest is history for McVeigh at the Texas Tech Football Program.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: Pretty good guy to uh be friends with, I'd say.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: During his time in Lubbock.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's uh, you know, he was kind of the king of West Texas while he was in uh at the LB LBK.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: So they'll talk about uh a nice, a nice man to become friends with, for sure.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: And so uh uh obviously Spike Dykes brought him onto the program and he was there ever since.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: And it was cool seeing uh Wes Welker talk during the uh memorial service.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: You could tell Tommy McVeigh was one of the guys who really brought Welker in and gave him that final scholarship uh to really be on the team and and to for him to see that in Welker and see a guy who was gonna play in the NFL and do all this sort of stuff.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: Um he obviously had a mind for the game.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: And uh it seems like Wes Welker was one of the most emotional about it.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: Um he his his quote on there's there's been few people that have taken a risk on Welker like he did.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: Um his contagious positive attitude and love showed his players throughout uh throughout the building.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: And uh he says he's forever grateful for having Tommy come to his life.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: And that's that that just means so much from a player that got so much out of being on the Texas Tech's football program, uh true legends from one legend to another.
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: And it's uh obviously not enough can be said about McVeigh for sure.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: Um Matt Wells was uh the final guy I wanted to bring up at the memorial because uh for a guy that only knew Tommy McVeigh for maybe two years, you know, for him to get up and talk and say the things he did about him, uh it's just it's it brings up a couple interesting points because you you look at a new hire, a new football coach uh who's coming in, usually has his own guys, uh, he's got his own staff.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: And he came in immediately, met with McVeigh for five minutes, and already wanted him to be there on his staff to help uh integrate him and and the rest of his staff to the community, to uh boosters, to people with the university.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I think that says a lot about uh Matt Wells and even more about McVeigh himself.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: Didn't you tell me that uh the the Wells, the interview for McVeigh was one of the biggest things that stood out to you?
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was yeah, it was.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, he met with him for five minutes, he said, uh, and basically saw his office and kind of asked him, uh, hey, what do you what what are your plans after this?
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: Wells talking to McVeigh.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: And uh Tommy McVeigh was like, well, I think I might retire.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: And uh Wells was like, hey man, why don't you stay with me for a couple of years, get me integrated here uh before you you know call it quits.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: And he was he automatically shot up, yeah, you know, I will, I'll help you out.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: And uh that says something about his character and uh how much he loves the university.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: Matt Wells dubbed him as Mr.
- 8:35SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: I could just imagine this guy being the biggest red raider you could ever meet.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: And that it just seems I just wish I could have had one handshake with the man, you know.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: And and the slickest red raider.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's not a lot of dudes that can pull off looking better than Cliff on the sideline, but uh he definitely pulled it off.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: My man looked like James Bond out there.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: The silver fox, the slick back hair and the sweet pullovers.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: My man's fashion was unmatched.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: Um, and I think uh ending the memorial service with the Matador song is always cool because he was, as Matt Wells said, Mr.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: Red Raider.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: So um he will be missed.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, we were very fortunate to have him for 33 years in the football program and uh prayers up to his family and uh all sorts of stuff, you know, that we can say about him.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: He leaves behind a legacy uh of of love and Lubbock, and uh prayers go out to his wife, his two daughters, and his grandkids.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: Moving on, I think uh I think we need to talk about the uh new basketball coach here at Texas Tech, Krista Gerlich.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: Biggest news of the week, no doubt.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: Uh talk talk about uh uh a time when we wanted some good news.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: I think this is it, Steven.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: Um, I this I really like this hire.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: What do you think?
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Well, I really I really like the hire um 14 years spent at UT Arlington and West Texas AM.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: Obviously, she's got some accolades, uh, Sunbelt Coach of the Year just in 2019.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: Uh, brought that brought that team when she first took it on.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: They had a they were four and twenty five her first year as as head coach at UT Arlington.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then the last two years they were 45 and 19.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: Talk about a turnaround job.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: She has apparently the most winningest coach in UT Arlington history.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: And I don't know how much that says, but uh just that's that's no matter what that says, something, especially if you're taking over a uh a struggling program.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: You don't turn a struggling program into a winning one overnight.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: It takes the right coach to do so.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's a reason why uh um certain programs stay in the mud so long, they just they haven't found the the right hire and the right uh people around them to get pulled out of the mud.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: And looks like Gurlich was the one to do that for UTA.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: And I I I think it's easy to write off a struggling program as oh yeah, she's the winningest of program history, but it they don't exactly have a strong history.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: I think it kind of discredits what she's done um because obviously she knows how to coach.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: So I I feel good about it.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: And uh obviously part of the 1993 championship team alongside Cheryl Swoops and Marcia Sharp, two people that uh you may have heard of.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, I think there's a road named after her or something.
- 11:14SPEAKER_02: Maybe that's what she's known as.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: Stone for right.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, something like that.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: But uh yeah, obviously part of the 1993 championship team uh in Lubbock, uh third all-time and assists in Texas Tech history and a member of the Texas Tech Hall of Fame.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: So she is uh she knows Lubbock and she knows uh she knows how to win here.
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: She knows West Texas too, and she obviously uh a lot of people have made a point whenever they're talking about her to say how much she loves Texas Tech and how much she loves West Texas.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: And that obviously takes someone that uh has a special place for the region in their heart.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: Um, so guess she she had no issue winning at West Texas AM.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: So that also shows some love for the region, and I think that's a good balance to bring uh good experience to bring to the program wherever you're playing out here on the plains.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: Um, it it takes a certain mentality to uh embrace it and love it.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: And I I think she's putting that in the forefront, and I love to see that in a tech coach.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: And I I I really like when we hire alumnus.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: And shades of Chris Beard, I may say.
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: Yes, I I I've been I've been thinking of this the whole time.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: You know, it's shades of Chris Beard because uh what you uh what you also need to mention about her is uh she coached under uh Marsha Sharp.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: She coached under Marsha Sharp for three years.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: Um you know, Beard kind of did something similar, coaching under Bobby Knight.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: We know someone who did the same, and that person uh also loves uh Texas Tech with all their heart and brought it in and took Texas Tech to new heights that we've never seen before.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: And the language she'll using is it's just very you know Chris Beard-esque.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: You know, like uh saying that you know Texas Tech is a pot of gold uh out there on the on the South Plains that this this this program deserves to be in the spotlight.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: Um, and I really like what she said is said all you could see success in the sports all across campus, except for women's basketball right now.
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: And she says that obviously needs to change, especially for a program that has such a strong history.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: I mean, she has she's stepping in the shoes of Marsha Sharp, no doubt one of the greatest coaches to ever step on campus.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: For sure, for sure.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: And the the just I mean, the side by side when you're looking at Beard's history and her history are very similar.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, coaching at a smaller school right before she came and he came to Texas Tech, they were assistant coaches for a while at tech.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: They coached, they were head coaches in West Texas, you know.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: Chris Beard was over at McMurray, you know, for a little bit.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: And I think he coached at San Angelo, yeah, in San Angelo State, I believe.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, we're not gonna say that she's gonna be Chris Beard because what Chris Beard has done here in his short time is uh nothing short of extraordinary, but she has she has potential and she's a Texas Tech person, and we love that.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's just me really wanting uh uh Chris Beard uh as a woman coaching uh the ones basketball program.
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: It's you know, the pro excluding UNLV, the program he was coaching at before he came to tech was also a Sunbelt school at Little Rock, Arkansas.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: So, hey, if that's not fate, I don't know what is.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: It's gotta be destiny.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's destiny.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: She's gonna be great.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: We're all rooting for her.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, and we're excited to move on to the next chapter after not a great one.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 14:36SPEAKER_02: And uh, I I think I think Kirby uh has made a a good repair hire, you know, a one that that makes the fan base happy, it makes us proud to be to cheer for the program because you know, whenever uh whenever you have a coach that's not treated the players right, you obviously don't feel good supporting that.
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: And I obviously with the way her her uh this lady's players have spoken about her and the people she's worked with have spoken about her.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: This this woman is is nothing but uh love for her players, and that's that's what you want out of a coach.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: And speaking of Kirby, he was not afraid to uh spill the bag on her, not uh not afraid she got a good uh 2.9 million over the next five years on her contract.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: And I think that kind of ties into what I want to say.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: Uh it seems like from an outside perspective, that some people think that Texas Tech is a kind of job before the job sort of area.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: You know, there's always rumors about our coaches going to UT next.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: You know, Texas Tech is just a stomping, is just a stop ground, you know, a stopping area uh before they get the big job.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: And it's like, okay, hold hold the brakes for a second here, because we have two coaches right now that are top five highest paid in their sports.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: And it's not like tennis and golf, it's Chris Beard and Tim Tadlock, two guys who have shown their stuff.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: Beard is the fifth highest paid coach in all of college basketball right now.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: Tim Tadlock is tied for fourth in col in all of college baseball.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: So we're not afraid to pay our coaches.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: And those are two of the what many could consider the three major sports in college, in college sports.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: You know, everyone kind of runs down the list of football, basketball, and baseball as being, you know, the the headliners, which you can see why.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: Um, and to hear our two very successful coaches in those sports uh be be top five paid shows that Texas Tech has coffers.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: I feel like all the critics that act like our coaches are just there to train for the next job uh overlook the amount of money this program has.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: I think they think that it's it's it's like a uh a G5 out here.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: No, this this is our endowment is over a billion dollars.
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: Now I know that doesn't necessarily translate to sports, but you'll it's hard you'll be hard pressed to find schools with that kind of money in general.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: So in we there's no lack of support for Texas Tech Athletics.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: We love our sports and we love our school.
- 17:06SPEAKER_02: I just think people like to find hope and try to think that their program is better.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, but I just I just don't think it shows, you know.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: I think it's just wishful thinking.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: We are so we have such a huge alumni base.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: We have such a huge we bring in so much money every year to the university.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: And this is it's obviously showing because we can pay these guys just as well as any other school.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: We are the team of West Texas, and we are the by definitely the third most popular team in the Lone Star State.
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: And this is a very populated state, and I think an argument can be made that no state loves sports like Texas does, uh, especially when it comes to college sports.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: You know, we we have more FPS programs than any other state in the entire nation, and I think that just goes to show that Texans love their sports, and a lot of Texans go to Texas Tech, and a lot of Texans are fans of Texas Tech.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: So I I'm with you.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: It's the Texas Tech is not the stepping stone.
- 18:05SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech is absolutely a destination, especially for the coaches that want it.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: Chris Beard said, I'm coming home.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: You know, he thinks this is home.
- 18:13SPEAKER_02: Yes, he's a UT grad, but he spent many years under Bob Knight.
- 18:17SPEAKER_02: And this this dude is obviously not faking his love for Lubbock in Texas Tech.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: No, and and I've I went through a few numbers on just certain certain contracts and what other universities are paying their head coaches.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, Beard, his last contract was six-year, almost 28 million dollars.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: You can compare this to Shock of Smart at Texas, who got a seven-year 22 million dollar contract.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, you can look at Mick Cronin at UCLA.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: UCLA, obviously a blue bud of college basketball, six-year 24 million.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, he's we're not afraid AM just paid does Buzz Williams six year 24 million.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, we we can afford to pay these coaches just as much as AM, just as much as Blue Bud, UCLA, just as much as Texas.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: And yeah, I like that you you you bring that up because not that long ago did the Texas Longhords reach out to Tim Tadlock.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: This was public thing, and we don't even know about some conversations they've maybe had with Beard trying to reach out to his people.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: Obviously, they're kind of stuck in a weird situation with Shaka.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: His buyout is massive, they're probably gonna keep him next year.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: Uh, he hasn't really he's been underwhelming.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: But as soon as as soon as Shaka's contract's up, I don't see them extending him.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: So we'll see when that comes to it because obviously Beard is a uh UT alum, but uh it's really hard to see him leaving.
- 19:43SPEAKER_02: It it didn't work for Tadlock.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: Granted, Tadlock is a Texas Tech alumnus, he played for the Texas Tech baseball team.
- 19:50SPEAKER_02: Um, but he said that no way uh he's he's happy here.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: And I I I hope we have a lifetime contract with Tadlock, and I hope we've set up uh the makings of a lifetime contract for Chris Beard.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: I mean, I don't mean in a literal sense, you you know what I mean.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um uh and we have Chris Beard who also is having a lot of hands on the new training facility being built.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: I I think we'll do anything for Chris Beard because he's obviously shown that this he's very, very happy to be here.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: And he's and there's you it's hard to find a fire for Lubbock in Texas Tech than you can you can find in Chris Beard because that man's at the top.
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: He's absolutely that man loves this school, yeah.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: And he's at the top of college basketball coaching just in general.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: So uh he deserves that respect.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, back to back to Gerlich, uh, just a just a good hire, good hire out of the gate, uh, especially from coming off a uh uh what was probably the biggest scandal since maybe the Mike Leach thing.
- 20:51SPEAKER_02: And even that, of course, was uh wishy-washy.
- 20:53SPEAKER_02: But this obviously this last one was uh not so much.
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: This was like really um you you don't like seeing USA Today front page.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: We've already gone over this, but I'm sure I speak for our whole fan base to saying that we just don't need that.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: Um we're happy to get Stalings out and happy to get uh girl again.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: Hey, uh it was uh I'm not even gonna come close to comparing the departure of um of Tubbs but to this.
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: But hey, he he he left us for Memphis, kind of leaving and now he didn't leave us dry.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: We're very thankful for what he did for Texas Tech.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: He got us off the ground.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: But right we were like, what do we do now?
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: You know, we have a coach that's been the best in years, and then it just opened the door to bring in the who's gonna go down as the greatest basketball coach in Texas Tech history.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: So I'm hoping this is the same.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: For sure, for sure.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: Also, I want to just bring up another thing about Gerlik is uh at her time at UTA, they got their first P5 win since 2006 over K State.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: So we we we like seeing that.
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: We like that.
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: And uh she ended up marrying a fellow Red Raider, uh, a linebacker at Texas Tech and uh Brian.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Brian Gerlich.
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: And good news, out of that family, Miss Bryan Gerlich, the daughter who is currently playing at Oklahoma State, has officially transferred to the Texas Tech basketball program.
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: How cool is that to go play for your mom's alma mater for your mom?
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: That's gotta be cool.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: That's so cool.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: That's really cool.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: And we should also mention that uh Lexi Gordon and Kristen Carr, both both uh really strong players for Texas Tech last year.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: They entered their name into the transfer portal when the whole Stallings thing went down, and they have now decided to stay with the program uh ever since I guess they met uh Coach Gerlich.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, that's that's really a good sign right off the bat that these players want to stay, you know, with a brand new coach that they've never played under.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: So I hope uh Kirby's found him a good leader.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: It sounds like we're off to a good start.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: So uh I just wanted to mention that in one little tidbit.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: Steve and I uh went to high school at Smithson Valley, uh down in Spring Branch, Spring Branch near San Antonio.
- 23:01SPEAKER_02: Miss Gerlic uh was head coach at our rival high school, Reagan.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: Yes, 99 in 2000.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: She and she led a really great squad there.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, she didn't beat our Rangers, but uh she probably did, probably did.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: But uh I I just thought that was kind of funny.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: So uh Steve and I did go to high school together.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, basketball, basketball wasn't our uh strong suit over there at SV.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: Shout out shout out Coach Hill, zero national championships.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: We love it.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: So uh well, exciting news for the talk and tech podcast.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: We got our first ever mailbag question.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Uh, you can uh send us some more questions at our Gmail, which is talking tech pod at gmail.com.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: But uh this one comes from Mark in Lubbock.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: Um, and he asks, what was y'all's bar move while you were in college?
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: So, Tristan, I don't know if you want to take that one away or that's gotta be the most red raider first question that we ever could have gotten.
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: Thank you for that, Mark.
- 24:08SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, uh we weren't exactly strangers to Broadway.
- 24:12SPEAKER_02: Uh we were uh we that was definitely our main stopping ground.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: That was that was pretty much the stopping ground.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: That's what we did.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: You know, we every once in a while we go over to the depot.
- 24:24SPEAKER_02: But you go over to the depot, you get yourself uh uh one of those biggies sausage wraps or brisket wraps.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: Those were clutch.
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: Insane, insanely good drunk food.
- 24:35SPEAKER_02: Yes, um, but uh this is a good one.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: Uh so it's the question what's my favorite or what was our like schedule?
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: What was our move?
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: You said what's y'all, what was y'all's bar move?
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Um it depended on how we how we started, I think.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: We would go to Broadway.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: We had a house that wasn't quite in um it wasn't in uh Tech Terrace, but we were kind of right outside of it.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: 24th.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: No, we were on 20th Street.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: Come on, man.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: You don't it's already been that long.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: But uh name with addresses.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: You didn't know it the whole two years we lived there.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: But uh uh we were on 20th Street um behind the McDonald's on 19th.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: Uh and so we were in walking distance from Broadway, which made it much easier.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: We didn't have to pay for an Uber or anything like that.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: But uh I think it really depended on the night we were having depended on where we started.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: Uh we would go in and and uh walk.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: We would go it like I said, it depended.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: We would start in if we started in local, we knew we were in for a yucky night.
- 25:43SPEAKER_02: It it's uh you know, it's obviously this is cliche, but well, were you with the boys or were you without with the girls?
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: This is true.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: This I I this is true because if we were with the girls, we would probably go to chimmies and we would probably go to stay there basically all night.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and stay there all night because that's that was that was the spot to go.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: But if you're getting yucky with the boys, you know, we can we could go a number of places, but uh if we started at local, we were in for a very, uh, very uh crazy night.
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: I was gonna say uh local was probably the boys' fave.
- 26:15SPEAKER_02: Um the Texas teas, the beers, uh that was that was our move.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: And we really liked local smoke-free, you know, and that it wasn't very busy during the night until very late until like Jimmy's clothes.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: So you wouldn't have to wait in line.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: That was always my thing.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: I hated waiting in line.
- 26:28SPEAKER_02: I was ready to drink.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: Um, I I would say local was our move, but hey, we we we didn't discriminate.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: We also loved well, we would we would start at local.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: I would say crickets was more of our move than anything.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: We went to crickets more than we went anywhere.
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: We went to crickets a lot because uh obviously the draft beer and uh they had the the trivia night that we loved.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: The sit-down area was nice too.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: They had some good, they had some pretty good food over there, uh pool over there on the other side.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: So uh crickets was fun.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: Chimmy's the line was too long, took place.
- 27:00SPEAKER_02: Best Chimmies is the best day drinking place, I will say.
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: I mean you get out there on the patio, you grab a mark, you grab a beer, you grab a plate of cheese fries, dude.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: You're living.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: I I grab a Chilton, dude.
- 27:10SPEAKER_02: I miss I miss Chilten's Chiltons, their spicy Chiltons were the bomb, man.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: They had this like cucumber something or another spicy Chilton that was just unreal.
- 27:21SPEAKER_02: And uh I I just I didn't like going there at night because I didn't want to waste an hour of my bar night.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: That's that was it.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: So uh but yeah, I would say local.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: I would say local was our spot, but we uh we absolutely spent our fair share of time at crickets and uh PM.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: Well, that's only because uh you didn't let us go to mesquites, otherwise known as mistakes.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: I did not let us go to mesquites.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: That was very rude.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: That's a the best place to people watch is at dirty skeets, and we all know it.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: Also known as meskates.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, mesquites was uh it was a time that was the first bar I ever got into.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: Um I'm not gonna say whether or not I was of age, but uh it was it was the bar, it was probably everybody's first bar that they got into when they made it.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: We were we were squares though.
- 28:11SPEAKER_02: We we didn't get any fakes or anything like that.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: We had no, yeah, we didn't we didn't do the fakes.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: We waited until 21.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: We were good good citizens, mom, if you're listening.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: Uh even though we've just been talking about getting loaded at at the bars this whole time.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: But uh no, man, that we we stuck to Broadway.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: We'd probably go local crickets PM to end the night and big uh uh stumble.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: Raider Grill came in at the very end.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: I that was a nice little outdoor patio.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, raider was fun.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: That was something that I wish we had more.
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: And there's some new ones out there that I'd like to get to, but unfortunately, uh not this season.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: Is uh apparently there's a shop bar there.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: I don't know if it's a shop bar.
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's called uh Big 12.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: Um, it's right next to Raider.
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: I think it's part of Raider.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: Um I think some of our younger listeners are probably yelling at the speaker right now.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: Like correct me.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: That's not it.
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: Hey, we still remember, we still we're OGs.
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: We remember Wild Burger.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: If you remember Wild Burger, you're an OG.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: So, yeah, we were Broadway guys.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: Um, and I I think that probably wraps it up with uh local and crickets were definitely our moves.
- 29:15SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, uh that's a great question, Mark.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: I definitely appreciate you asking.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, fun, fun first mailbag question.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: Uh again, if you want to shoot us some more mailbag questions, uh talkintechpod at gmail.com, and uh we'll answer them here at the end of end of episodes.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: So um Tristan, why don't you give me your uh your song of the week?
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: All right, so my song of the week, uh, I'm gonna go with something slow uh and well written.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: I have a uh a local favorite out of New Bronx, his name is Drew Kennedy, uh and he writes one of my top five favorite songs of all time called Open Road.
- 29:48SPEAKER_02: And it's just a visual masterpiece because he just paints his lyrics and you can see the picture in your head.
- 29:54SPEAKER_02: It's about driving from Houston to Big Ben National Park, and it's just like his love letter to West Texas, and it's just it's it's a beautiful song, and you feel like you're in that car driving it.
- 30:05SPEAKER_02: And I love songs like that that just really nail the story writing where you feel like you're the character they're singing about.
- 30:12SPEAKER_03: How long has it been?
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 30:22SPEAKER_03: Since I felt to lie behind the wheel.
- 30:43SPEAKER_01: It's my favorite by them.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: Uh, but Tristan you introduced me to them uh what, probably in college.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: And dude, I love their vibe.
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: I love the different aspects that they bring in.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's a real melting pot of musical talent when you're talking about this band because they bring in some red dirt country, they bring in some soul, they bring in some jazz elements, some blues, some blues, yeah.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: And they just have a ton of different influences.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: And I I love that from uh from a band, you know, just not you know, you can you can fit into a lot of different genres.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, and they sound like DFW, you know, it's it's it's got the cowboy, but it's also got the refined, you know, it's got the up class that Dallas is, you know.
- 31:27SPEAKER_02: And I that's a great pick.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: I know I expected that to be your first week.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: And it should have, it probably should have been my first week.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: This is one of my I would put that in like my top five songs of all time.
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: So I have been listening to them lately.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: Uh, I will say the song itself is super powerful, it's got a cool message on uh how you want to live your life.
- 31:45SPEAKER_01: Uh when you're nearing the end of your life, you know, are you gonna be happy with how you ultimately lived it?
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: And uh this guy obviously he wants to be known as a dreamer, uh, which is great.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: Uh love the vocals, pretty much, you know, two of the things that I never played an instrument, so I'm not I'm not super big on the uh listening to how uh the guitar and the drums flow with the with the song, but I look for lyricism and I look for vocal talent, and this band has it all.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: Absolutely good pick.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: I think our listeners are really gonna like them.
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: And uh not even even if you like country, even if you don't like country music, you should give them a shot.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because there's really a whole lot of different things.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: There's a lot going on.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 32:23SPEAKER_03: I will die a dreamer.
- 32:26SPEAKER_03: I won't die a man.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: Buy and by believer that's just who I am.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: So bury me with roses, boxes full of sink.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: I will die a dream a dream in me.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, man.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: Did you have any shout outs in the episode?
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: I have a shout-out, I have a shout out to Mark for asking the first question.
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: Go mark, man.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: We're team Mark here.
- 32:55SPEAKER_01: Mark from Lubbock, baby.
- 32:57SPEAKER_01: So um, I did I had a shout-out for the uh students returning to campus, uh, the incoming freshman, whatever, if you're a sophomore, if you're going into your final year, uh shout out to you.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: We were we were once in college, so uh uh make sure to live it up, but also you know, follow all the safety precautions you need to uh going into this year.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: Um enjoy it, y'all.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: You'll you blink, you'll it'll be gone.
- 33:20SPEAKER_01: You got four or five years, hopefully.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: Uh and uh you know, just live it up because we we enjoyed the hell out of our time.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: I know we miss it.
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: And we miss it at times, so that that's why it it stings not to be able to go up for a football game, but uh hopefully things will get back to normal here soon.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: And we almost went the whole time without talking about COVID.
- 33:39SPEAKER_02: Wow, heck yeah.
- 33:41SPEAKER_02: We almost went the whole time.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: And uh kind of a quick tidbit is uh I was with my uncle who's listening to the podcast.
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: He says, So are y'all gonna mention Pat Mahomes every single episode?
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: I was like, there's a good chance.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: I would if I could.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: We can tie into anything around the guy who brought us a Super Bowl to Texas Tech.
- 34:00SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: Texas Tech Super Bowl Champions 2020.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: It was magical.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, man, that's gonna that's gonna end it for our episode number three of the talking tech pod.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: So uh we really appreciate y'all listening.
- 34:14SPEAKER_01: Uh, you can follow uh me and Tristan on Twitter.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: Tristan is at Tristy Mick.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: I am at L underscore S underscore Rodriguez.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: The pod is also on Twitter at talking tech pod.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: Uh shoot us, shoot us a couple mailbag questions, like I said, talking tech pod at gmail.com.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: We'll definitely get them at the end of an episode.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: So we appreciate y'all listening and always rec'em tech.
- 34:34SPEAKER_00: Wreck'em tech, y'all.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: Uh wow.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just want to congratulate Steven and Tristan on another great podcast.
- 34:50SPEAKER_00: They were everything we thought they would be.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: Um, we have a lot of respect for their program.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: We have such a high opinion of them.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: I want to congratulate them.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: I just want to tell Steven and Tristan thanks for coming out.
- 35:01SPEAKER_00: The energy uh was really, really good in there today.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: You know, we fed off of it.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: I think it goes back and forth tremendous.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: Uh great job.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, just just proud of our guys for the way they responded.
