- 0:00What happens when we sleep? Where does the consciousness go?
- 0:07For most people, sleep is a blank state.
- 0:10We have little awareness of what goes on during sleep, except for
- 0:14times when we are having a dream in a state near enough to the
- 0:17waking state that we actually remember details from the dream.
- 0:23We may try to interpret and understand the dream, we believe
- 0:28there may be some significance to it, but we are not quite
- 0:32sure. Western scientists trying to
- 0:35study sleep have identified several types of changes in the
- 0:39brain waves generated during periods of sleep, and they have
- 0:43tied them to periods of waking, consciousness, dream state,
- 0:48light sleep and deep sleep. However, they bring us no closer
- 0:54to an actual understanding of sleep itself, its purpose, and
- 0:59what takes place in the consciousness during sleep.
- 1:04There are many things in the world which we cannot directly
- 1:07observe, but which we interpret by the effect they have.
- 1:12Electricity is one of those things.
- 1:15We don't see the electricity, but we experience its results.
- 1:20Similarly, we can begin to understand what happens to us
- 1:24during sleep by our experience after waking.
- 1:29Sometimes we wake up groggy and tired.
- 1:33Other times we wake up energetic and can't wait to start the day.
- 1:38Sometimes we are disturbed by some kind of dream, chaotic or
- 1:43alarming or satisfying or uplifting.
- 1:48Clearly, the consciousness does not simply stop when we sleep,
- 1:52we simply do not pay conscious attention to it.
- 1:57During sleep, our body uses the time to regenerate itself,
- 2:01resetting a lot of the body's functions, repairing tissue,
- 2:05balancing out the body's response, relaxing the tension
- 2:10of the prior day. But sleep, obviously, is much
- 2:14more than downtime aimed at the body's regeneration needs.
- 2:18They're also vital worlds we enter, or mental worlds.
- 2:24Some even meet spiritual teachers and undergo various
- 2:27forms of spiritual growth while they sleep.
- 2:31It is a well known phenomenon that someone can go to bed with
- 2:34some certain concern or problem and wake up the next morning
- 2:39with the solution at hand. There are a number of methods
- 2:44that spiritual practitioners use to make sleep conscious.
- 2:48This does not mean trying to stay awake as some people have
- 2:52interpreted it. Rather, it is to build a bridge
- 2:57between the waking awareness and the sleep state so that the
- 3:01experiences in dream can be brought consciously into the
- 3:05waking state, which implies the sleep state begins to gain a
- 3:09conscious element while the deep sleep state still takes place.
- 3:16Another practice uses affirmations and various forms
- 3:20of focus or preparation of the mind through aspiration, prayer,
- 3:25consecration, etcetera, to ensure the consciousness does
- 3:30not drift downwards toward darker and denser levels that
- 3:35could otherwise drag down the spiritual Sadhna.
- 3:39Sri Orbindo writes quote sleep, because of its subconscious
- 3:45basis, usually brings a falling down to a lower level unless it
- 3:49is a conscious sleep. To make it more and more
- 3:52conscious is the one permanent remedy, but also until that is
- 3:57done, one should always react against this sinking tendency
- 4:01when 1 wakes and not allow the effect of dull nights to
- 4:05accumulate. But these things need always a
- 4:08settled endeavour and discipline and must take time, sometimes a
- 4:13long time. It will not do to refrain from
- 4:17the effort because immediate results do not appear.
