- 0:10Speaker 1: Broadcasting live from Bellevue Square Center Court, here's your host,
- 0:15Speaker 1: Michael Bumpus.
- 0:17Speaker 3: You are listening to Hawks Live, presented by the Dining
- 0:19Speaker 3: District at the Bellevue Collection. The show starts at 7
- 0:21Speaker 3: every Thursday right here on Seattle Sports 710. Broadcasting live
- 0:25Speaker 3: from Bellevue Square Center Court, I got my guy Paul
- 0:28Speaker 3: Moyer back. He was on the Champions Tour.
- 0:32Speaker 4: Golf Tour. He was on the Champions Tour.
- 0:33Speaker 5: How'd you do? I did well. Actually, I won it.
- 0:36Speaker 6: Did you?
- 0:37Speaker 5: Yeah, it was good.
- 0:38Speaker 4: You waited all this time and didn't tell me?
- 0:40Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, I don't tell you everything.
- 0:42Speaker 4: You're humble, huh?
- 0:42Speaker 5: I don't tell you everything.
- 0:43Speaker 4: You should. I don't know why you don't.
- 0:45Speaker 5: Thanks for asking. We should tell the audience that that's
- 0:47Speaker 5: not true. The Champions Tour is, they're in the off-season
- 0:50Speaker 5: right now. So, yes, I didn't lose. How's that?
- 0:52Speaker 4: Didn't lose. I like that.
- 0:54Speaker 3: And, hey, thank you to the crowd. First lost since November, what,
- 1:00Speaker 3: 16th or something like that. And you guys are still
- 1:02Speaker 3: out here supporting your guys.
- 1:04Speaker 4: I do a show. There we go.
- 1:06Speaker 3: I do a show weekly Monday to Friday, 10 to 2,
- 1:09Speaker 3: Bump and Stacey. Brenda's husband is our producer. And you
- 1:15Speaker 3: would be amazed with just the, not the hate, but
- 1:18Speaker 3: like the concern that we get from the text lines.
- 1:22Speaker 4: I understand a loss is a loss, and you should
- 1:24Speaker 4: be a bit concerned.
- 1:25Speaker 3: But if you look at the way that they lost Moyer,
- 1:28Speaker 3: then you know you you feel okay you don't accept
- 1:31Speaker 3: losses but you're not.
- 1:32Speaker 5: Panicking look we we dominated the game it's just it
- 1:35Speaker 5: goes to show you you still have to make plays
- 1:38Speaker 5: and anybody can beat you that we beat them 98
- 1:41Speaker 5: out of 100 times i believe that three turnovers to
- 1:44Speaker 5: none really four because we went for it on fourth
- 1:46Speaker 5: down and didn't score there so it's really four turnovers
- 1:50Speaker 5: to me um Still had a chance to win like
- 1:54Speaker 5: we always do at the end if we just play
- 1:56Speaker 5: a few things a little bit better technique-wise. But I'm
- 1:59Speaker 5: going to tell you kind of a funny story. I
- 2:01Speaker 5: think it's funny. So if you guys remember back, when
- 2:05Speaker 5: was the last loss before this?
- 2:06Speaker 4: November 16th, I believe.
- 2:07Speaker 5: November 16th when we lost to the Rams down in L.A.
- 2:11Speaker 5: and we turned the ball over. Actually, Sam Darn will
- 2:14Speaker 5: have four interceptions. And I said, after that game, I said,
- 2:17Speaker 5: Seahawks are going to go undefeated. We won't lose another game.
- 2:20Speaker 5: I go, four turnovers. I go, and we still had
- 2:23Speaker 5: a chance to win and should have won. There's not
- 2:25Speaker 5: another team out there that's going to beat us. And
- 2:28Speaker 5: we've got the Rams at home. We're going to run
- 2:30Speaker 5: the table. And we did. Obviously, we won the Super Bowl.
- 2:33Speaker 5: So I go to the game. Dave Wyman's got a
- 2:36Speaker 5: bad back, so I fly in. I'm gone for a
- 2:38Speaker 5: couple days. I fly in on Friday afternoon. I get
- 2:41Speaker 5: a text message from our producer, NASA. It's like 12.45,
- 2:45Speaker 5: right when I land. Hey, I need 20 minutes. Can
- 2:48Speaker 5: you make it to Washington, D.C. and do the game tomorrow?
- 2:51Speaker 5: And I'm like, I probably should ask my wife. Okay,
- 2:54Speaker 5: I'll do it. If I can get a flight, and
- 2:57Speaker 5: we get to fly back on a team plane, which
- 2:59Speaker 5: is a great way to travel. So first of all,
- 3:01Speaker 5: I'm in good graces because I call, we're going undefeated,
- 3:04Speaker 5: we win the Super Bowl. There should be a statue
- 3:07Speaker 5: out there for me, right? So I do the game
- 3:11Speaker 5: and Schneider and Chuck Arnold, the president of the company
- 3:14Speaker 5: for the organization, they're great people. So I get on
- 3:17Speaker 5: the plane and Schneider just looks at my head, shakes
- 3:21Speaker 5: his head at me and goes, you're not allowed on
- 3:23Speaker 5: this plane and to do any more games. Chuck Arnold
- 3:25Speaker 5: comes by and goes, you're not allowed to do the
- 3:27Speaker 5: games anymore. He goes, you're out. Not that they're superstitious.
- 3:31Speaker 5: The head of security comes. So they're either all in it,
- 3:35Speaker 5: on it. And so finally, now they come back again
- 3:38Speaker 5: and they do it again. We're up in a 747.
- 3:40Speaker 5: We're up in a top area. It's a tough way
- 3:43Speaker 5: to travel. And finally, I said, well, wait a minute.
- 3:46Speaker 5: And I grabbed John and I said... And I tell
- 3:49Speaker 5: him the story. It's on record. I did the claim
- 3:53Speaker 5: that we're going to go undefeated. So he gave me
- 3:55Speaker 5: a fist pump and said, okay, you're forgiven. So that's
- 3:58Speaker 5: my story. But I'm still not allowed to do any
- 3:59Speaker 5: more games and travel with the team. So that's all
- 4:02Speaker 5: I got.
- 4:02Speaker 4: One flex, 747. Two flex.
- 4:05Speaker 5: I didn't build it.
- 4:06Speaker 4: President Chuck. Three flex, John Snyder.
- 4:09Speaker 5: I'm not around the team much.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Are you done flexing or are we going to do
- 4:13Speaker 3: the show now?
- 4:13Speaker 5: I don't rub elbows with those guys like you do.
- 4:16Speaker 4: I don't at all.
- 4:17Speaker 6: So.
- 4:17Speaker 3: I see John in the parking lot and gave him
- 4:19Speaker 3: the deuce and walk in and do my podcast with
- 4:22Speaker 3: Nassar Chovy.
- 4:23Speaker 4: That's what I do.
- 4:23Speaker 5: Well, there wasn't much to talk about. We didn't make plays,
- 4:26Speaker 5: and we should have won the game.
- 4:28Speaker 4: I feel you.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Raise your hand if you thought Sam Darnold played a
- 4:32Speaker 3: bad game. You guys are smart individuals. He had a
- 4:36Speaker 3: horrible play. One bad play, but my man threw for 379.
- 4:40Speaker 4: A career high. Four touchdowns. One interception was not on him.
- 4:45Speaker 3: I'm so glad you guys are educated Seahawks fans because
- 4:48Speaker 3: he throws that interception, then he drives down the field, Jason, Jason, Jason,
- 4:53Speaker 3: Torrey Horton.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Cooper Cub, and you're in for a touchdown.
- 4:56Speaker 3: And, Paul, when they scored that touchdown, there was no
- 4:59Speaker 3: doubt in my mind the defense was going to get
- 5:01Speaker 3: a stop and Sam was going to get the football
- 5:03Speaker 3: and punch it in for the win.
- 5:04Speaker 5: I agree. I'm at the game, and you can just
- 5:09Speaker 5: feel it. The commanders, they had no chance to drive
- 5:13Speaker 5: on us 80 yards and score. They had none. I mean,
- 5:16Speaker 5: we really were dominating that game. We almost doubled the
- 5:19Speaker 5: yardage on them. You know, the only thing, again, was
- 5:22Speaker 5: unfortunately was the turnovers. And I thought it was Sam's
- 5:26Speaker 5: one of his best games I've ever seen. The way
- 5:28Speaker 5: he moved.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Most he's ever thrown for.
- 5:30Speaker 5: Well, just the way he moved in the pocket and
- 5:31Speaker 5: the decision-making and, again, his accuracy was. The guy hasn't
- 5:35Speaker 5: really played a game since last February. Nothing in preseason.
- 5:39Speaker 5: He plays five snaps in the first game of the season.
- 5:42Speaker 5: And then this one, and it was like, wow. And again,
- 5:45Speaker 5: he just, to me, continues to get better. And people,
- 5:48Speaker 5: for some reason, still dog him. Well, he throws too
- 5:50Speaker 5: many interceptions. And then we saw what was on Sunday
- 5:53Speaker 5: night or Monday night, whenever it was when the Rams
- 5:56Speaker 5: were playing. And they showed Stafford through his 33rd interception
- 6:02Speaker 5: for a touchdown.
- 6:03Speaker 4: That's crazy. 33.
- 6:04Speaker 5: It's an NFL record. He's going to make it in
- 6:06Speaker 5: the Hall of Fame, and no one even talks about him.
- 6:08Speaker 5: So it just goes to show perception isn't always reality.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what it is right there. Got to get
- 6:15Speaker 3: the run game going, right? I think that was one,
- 6:17Speaker 3: not a concern, but something that you want to see.
- 6:19Speaker 3: It's crazy how things changed the first week. You rushed for, what,
- 6:22Speaker 3: 92 points. The second week, you wish for a buck 62.
- 6:27Speaker 4: And then you hit 44, and the sky is falling.
- 6:30Speaker 4: I understand, right?
- 6:31Speaker 3: You want to see the run game get going. It
- 6:34Speaker 3: started off slow last year, but that's something that needs
- 6:36Speaker 3: to improve. But if there was something that you saw
- 6:39Speaker 3: with this offense or defense that you felt like, other
- 6:42Speaker 3: than a run game, that needs to improve, what did
- 6:44Speaker 3: you see?
- 6:45Speaker 5: Well, let me address the run game first of all.
- 6:48Speaker 5: When they had their true 3-4 defense in, where they
- 6:53Speaker 5: had their nose on our center, and then their two
- 6:56Speaker 5: tackles covering our guards, and then their ends, and then
- 6:58Speaker 5: they dropped the safety down. And I'm looking at nine
- 7:01Speaker 5: guys in a box. We're probably not running the football.
- 7:05Speaker 5: And they were a tough team to run on anyways.
- 7:07Speaker 5: They got three big, huge hogs in the middle. You know, 320,
- 7:11Speaker 5: 330 pounds. Very good. They weren't great pass rushers. And
- 7:15Speaker 5: that was the one thing I loved that Fleury did.
- 7:17Speaker 5: He adjusted. He said, okay, they're going to force us
- 7:20Speaker 5: to throw the ball. They're going to force us to
- 7:22Speaker 5: try and spread it, even though JSN still finds a
- 7:26Speaker 5: way to always get open. I'm not concerned about the
- 7:28Speaker 5: run game. If they want to take that away, I
- 7:31Speaker 5: think Fleury realizes we're just going to have to hurt
- 7:33Speaker 5: them in the pass game, which we did. When you
- 7:35Speaker 5: score over 30 points, Yeah, it's a pretty healthy offense.
- 7:39Speaker 5: So I think Coach McDonald talked about the run game, too.
- 7:42Speaker 5: He said last week it was pretty good.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:45Speaker 5: Against the commanders, it wasn't. No panic there. So that,
- 7:50Speaker 5: and I think the other one is on defense, it's
- 7:55Speaker 5: just hard to nitpick it. It's just... We had good
- 8:00Speaker 5: coverage at times, and I have to give Mario to
- 8:02Speaker 5: some credit. He made some great throws. We were playing
- 8:05Speaker 5: a lot of two deep shell, and they were running
- 8:07Speaker 5: corner routes with their slot receiver. The only thing I
- 8:10Speaker 5: would tell the coaching staff and everybody is, we got
- 8:13Speaker 5: to jam that slot. You can't let him have a
- 8:15Speaker 5: free release like that, especially when it's like a third
- 8:18Speaker 5: and six, because they run a guy into the flat,
- 8:20Speaker 5: and the corner who's supposed to slough off and help
- 8:23Speaker 5: get underneath a corner route and give some help underneath
- 8:26Speaker 5: for his safety, He's in a bind. If I get
- 8:29Speaker 5: too deep, that's an easy first down in the flat
- 8:32Speaker 5: or like a seven yard out. And so you got
- 8:35Speaker 5: to jam that slot just to mess up the timing
- 8:38Speaker 5: because that's just too hard on the safety. Other than that,
- 8:41Speaker 5: you just got to make plays. And that's the nature
- 8:44Speaker 5: of the NFL. I don't think we actually played bad.
- 8:46Speaker 5: It was just three turnovers, really four, and didn't make
- 8:50Speaker 5: some timely plays when they did.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Yes or no question for the thousand people who are
- 8:55Speaker 3: sitting here. Is JSN the best receiver in the game?
- 8:59Speaker 3: Best receiver in the game. No doubt about it. My
- 9:02Speaker 3: man goes for the buck 28, buck 55, a buck 28.
- 9:08Speaker 3: He is the best receiver in the game. What impresses
- 9:10Speaker 3: you the most?
- 9:11Speaker 4: A safety. What impresses you the most about JSN?
- 9:14Speaker 5: Well, a lot of people, I've heard, was it Jamar
- 9:16Speaker 5: Chase who said, well, he's not double teamed like I am.
- 9:20Speaker 5: I go, first of all, nobody really gets doubled.
- 9:22Speaker 4: You get a bracket.
- 9:22Speaker 5: You get brackets. And, you know, there's times they'll roll.
- 9:25Speaker 5: you know, a zone over to you and maybe, you know,
- 9:27Speaker 5: void a backside or leave a backside corner man-to-man. It
- 9:31Speaker 5: doesn't matter. The man finds zones open. Even when there
- 9:35Speaker 5: was a bracket, he would stick a route and still
- 9:39Speaker 5: beat the corner to the outside, even though the corner
- 9:42Speaker 5: was outside and knew he had inside help. It's one
- 9:44Speaker 5: of those Steve Largent moves. It's hard to explain, but
- 9:48Speaker 5: your brain just says... I'm vulnerable inside, even though I'm
- 9:53Speaker 5: supposed to be outside, and you bite on it every time.
- 9:56Speaker 5: So my point is, he gets open, and he runs.
- 9:59Speaker 5: great routes. He's got beautiful hands, and obviously it doesn't
- 10:03Speaker 5: matter if it's Locke or Sam Darnold. They both have
- 10:05Speaker 5: such a great connection together.
- 10:07Speaker 3: No, JSN's been doing some things that we've never seen before.
- 10:10Speaker 5: What do you say about it?
- 10:12Speaker 3: I see a guy who is deceptive. He's faster than
- 10:15Speaker 3: what you think. He's not a 4'3 guy. He's probably
- 10:17Speaker 3: a high 4'4 guy. but fast enough. He's good at
- 10:21Speaker 3: filling space and time. I think that is crucial, and
- 10:24Speaker 3: he'll make every single catch that you can, but he
- 10:28Speaker 3: didn't have a drop or two, so let's keep him humble.
- 10:30Speaker 3: You're the best in the game, but you still had
- 10:32Speaker 3: a drop or two.
- 10:33Speaker 4: It's been great watching Jason do his thing.
- 10:35Speaker 3: All right, we're just getting started here on Hawks Live.
- 10:38Speaker 3: When we come back, we'll have an opponent preview that
- 10:40Speaker 3: is next here on Hawks Live.
- 10:46Speaker 4: You are listening to Hawks.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Live on Michael Bumpus with my guy, Paul Moya.
- 10:51Speaker 4: He is back.
- 10:52Speaker 3: You know, before we get into this opponent preview, I'm
- 10:54Speaker 3: going to ask you the question that our peoples were
- 10:56Speaker 3: asking us. And Paul called the game. Did a great job,
- 11:00Speaker 3: by the way, if you guys didn't listen on radio.
- 11:02Speaker 3: I was like a proud nephew listening to.
- 11:05Speaker 4: My aunt do his thing, man.
- 11:07Speaker 5: It was fun.
- 11:07Speaker 3: What was the turning point of the game for you?
- 11:11Speaker 5: Good or bad?
- 11:12Speaker 4: I mean, you choose.
- 11:14Speaker 5: Well, obviously the fumble early on. Just, again, you could
- 11:18Speaker 5: just tell that there was a little physical mismatch. I
- 11:21Speaker 5: just felt that. And if we just could win the
- 11:25Speaker 5: field position battle, we were going to win that game.
- 11:28Speaker 5: And now when you fall behind on the road early,
- 11:31Speaker 5: that catch-up part's hard. You always want to try and
- 11:34Speaker 5: take the lead. That was a big moment. There must
- 11:38Speaker 5: be one in your mind, though.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Well, I said the turning point because there was a
- 11:43Speaker 3: back and forth. I thought it was the pick six.
- 11:46Speaker 3: In that moment, I go, the commanders really believe they
- 11:48Speaker 3: can win this game. I think until that point, they
- 11:51Speaker 3: were like, we think we can win this game. After
- 11:54Speaker 3: the pick six, they're like, we know we're going to
- 11:55Speaker 3: win this game. And my man here said it was
- 11:57Speaker 3: the third and seven that Mariota picked up. All right,
- 12:01Speaker 3: that's a little later in the game, so they sealed
- 12:03Speaker 3: it after that. But for me, it was the pick
- 12:05Speaker 3: six because when you let teams hang around, there has
- 12:09Speaker 3: to be a moment. I mean, I played in games
- 12:11Speaker 3: like that, you played in games like that, whereas you
- 12:14Speaker 3: think you're good enough to beat this team, this might
- 12:16Speaker 3: be your day, and then there's something that happens to
- 12:18Speaker 3: where now the sideline is like, hey, we got these guys.
- 12:21Speaker 4: And I think after that pick six, they felt like,
- 12:23Speaker 4: all right, we got these dudes.
- 12:25Speaker 5: The part that was interesting to me or where I went, oh,
- 12:28Speaker 5: you know what, that's right. Their fans were so into
- 12:32Speaker 5: it at the end of the game. If you were
- 12:33Speaker 5: a fan of the Commanders and watched that game, you said, oh, wow.
- 12:39Speaker 5: We're not at the level of the Seahawks. We're just
- 12:41Speaker 5: not there. All the turnovers and every major play went
- 12:47Speaker 5: their way for them to have a chance to win.
- 12:50Speaker 5: And it dawned on me, I go, oh man, we're
- 12:52Speaker 5: the Super Bowl champs. Every game. So when somebody beats us,
- 12:56Speaker 5: they think, oh, we're a really good team. I thought the...
- 13:02Speaker 5: Because on the broadcast, even when we threw that interception,
- 13:04Speaker 5: I go, this game's not over. We're going to score quick.
- 13:07Speaker 5: And we scored in like five plays. It was like bang, bang, bang, bang.
- 13:10Speaker 6: Five plays, yeah.
- 13:11Speaker 5: And it was like, we're still in this thing. Now
- 13:13Speaker 5: we just got to get a stop. And I was
- 13:15Speaker 5: convinced we were going to win. You and I talked
- 13:17Speaker 5: about it. We would have. We just, we should have
- 13:20Speaker 5: had to stop. We just didn't play our techniques right.
- 13:23Speaker 5: And that's frustrating. And when you go as a coach
- 13:26Speaker 5: back and watch a film and say, oh, my God,
- 13:29Speaker 5: we didn't even have to play well to win this game.
- 13:31Speaker 5: And so, really, it's a frustrating loss. It's one I'm
- 13:34Speaker 5: not concerned about, but I go, man, that's a bummer
- 13:37Speaker 5: because the end of this year, our schedule is tough.
- 13:40Speaker 5: I mean, we got the Rams, too, the last three games.
- 13:43Speaker 5: We got the 49ers, Philadelphia, Chicago. I mean, it's a
- 13:46Speaker 5: tough schedule at the end, and that's one of those
- 13:48Speaker 5: I really thought we had a chance to start off 5-0.
- 13:50Speaker 4: All right, so now let's focus on these Chargers, man.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Justin Herbert, what, his second or third year throws for
- 13:57Speaker 3: 5,000 yards over 30 touchdowns.
- 13:59Speaker 4: How long do you think Herbert's been a pro? Your guess.
- 14:04Speaker 5: Six years.
- 14:05Speaker 4: You're better than most. Seven years.
- 14:06Speaker 3: It feels like four or five to me for some reason.
- 14:10Speaker 3: But this year, he hasn't been performing at a high level.
- 14:13Speaker 3: I watched the film, and you see the physical.
- 14:16Speaker 4: He has a great arm. He's mobile.
- 14:19Speaker 3: But there's something missing. His receivers have dropped some footballs
- 14:22Speaker 3: as well. I looked at pro football reference, and they
- 14:24Speaker 3: had their receivers dropping three passes. I counted three in
- 14:28Speaker 3: that game alone. against the Bills, right? I give them
- 14:31Speaker 3: three to five passes that they've dropped. And you bring
- 14:34Speaker 3: in Harbaugh, you bring in McDaniel, and you think, okay,
- 14:37Speaker 3: this is going to be the thing to kind of
- 14:38Speaker 3: elevate Justin Herbert, but he's still not able to get
- 14:41Speaker 3: over the hump. What are your thoughts on Herbert, who
- 14:44Speaker 3: he is in the NFL, and as a quarterback?
- 14:48Speaker 5: Well, I think he's incredibly talented. I mean, you'd want
- 14:51Speaker 5: him on your team. I thought last year he did
- 14:54Speaker 5: make that next step, and I'm just shocked at Harbaugh
- 15:00Speaker 5: brought in Mike McDaniels. I've said it, and I've watched him. He,
- 15:04Speaker 5: to me, is that guy who just gets up on
- 15:06Speaker 5: the whiteboard, and he's got all these great ideas, and
- 15:10Speaker 5: it sounds good until they're in a different defense or
- 15:13Speaker 5: someone smacks you in the mouth, and how do we adjust,
- 15:16Speaker 5: and the attention to detail that's really intricate. When we
- 15:20Speaker 5: played them last year, I said, this is a high
- 15:22Speaker 5: school offense. They're doing all these things, but, man, they
- 15:26Speaker 5: were such a bad team. And the way that they executed.
- 15:30Speaker 5: And I look at, again, this year. I go, you
- 15:33Speaker 5: got Herbert. He's completing 59% of his passes. 59% of
- 15:38Speaker 5: the passes when I was playing would have been like 40%.
- 15:42Speaker 5: You know, because most guys now are in the mid-60s, high-60s.
- 15:46Speaker 5: They're even in the 70% range because of the quick
- 15:48Speaker 5: passing game. So to me, that's just shocking. Now, they
- 15:51Speaker 5: got some injuries and things like that, but I just,
- 15:54Speaker 5: this is not a good fit. You know, hardball has
- 15:56Speaker 5: always been, to me, an attention to detail. We're going
- 15:59Speaker 5: to run the ball. We're tough. We're going to out-execute people,
- 16:03Speaker 5: and that's what we saw when the 49ers and Seahawks
- 16:06Speaker 5: turned the Legion of Boob time. I don't see that anymore.
- 16:09Speaker 5: That's just, to me, it's a really weird hire.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Do you know who leads the league in completion percentage?
- 16:17Speaker 5: I do not.
- 16:19Speaker 4: Gino Smith.
- 16:19Speaker 3: 75%. Gino Smith.
- 16:24Speaker 4: Just a side note for you.
- 16:25Speaker 5: Look.
- 16:26Speaker 4: Just a side note.
- 16:27Speaker 5: Look, we always said, look, Geno's accurate. Geno's good inside
- 16:30Speaker 5: the pocket. You can give him protection and some receivers.
- 16:32Speaker 5: Geno can beat you. That was never the issue.
- 16:35Speaker 3: Yeah, but so going back to the Chargers, they have
- 16:37Speaker 3: a decent running back in Amarion Hampton out of University
- 16:40Speaker 3: of North Carolina.
- 16:41Speaker 5: First-round pick last year. They have my fantasy team.
- 16:44Speaker 3: All right, there you go. They have Trey Harris on
- 16:46Speaker 3: the outside. You have Ladd McConkie. You have Quinton Johnston
- 16:51Speaker 3: as well. But the offensive line has struggled a little bit.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Your tackle, Joel... Alt, I think his name is?
- 16:58Speaker 6: Yep.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Joe Alt has struggled a little bit this year. There's
- 17:02Speaker 3: so much talent on this team, but that goes to
- 17:04Speaker 3: show that if you cannot mold the talent to run
- 17:07Speaker 3: your scheme, then it's going to be tough. How do
- 17:10Speaker 3: you think, offensively or defensively, the Hawks should attack these guys?
- 17:15Speaker 5: Well, offensively, they're averaging 14 first downs a game. Opponents
- 17:21Speaker 5: are 25 a game. I mean, that is such a disparity.
- 17:23Speaker 4: It's crazy.
- 17:24Speaker 5: Yeah. I think it'll be harder to run. I think
- 17:28Speaker 5: they're actually, the Chargers are a pretty good run defense.
- 17:30Speaker 5: I think we're going to have to get them in
- 17:32Speaker 5: the air. You know, they don't have as, you know,
- 17:35Speaker 5: Cleo Mack is still there, and I know they were
- 17:37Speaker 5: arresting him. So they got some guys who can't get
- 17:39Speaker 5: after the quarterback. But we've done a really good job
- 17:42Speaker 5: the first three games of protecting, creating a really nice pocket.
- 17:46Speaker 5: I'm going to go after them. I think it's just
- 17:48Speaker 5: going to be a challenge for us to run it.
- 17:49Speaker 5: They're giving up about 3.9, I think 3.9 yards per carry.
- 17:51Speaker 5: That's low. in this league. Look, I think it's also
- 17:58Speaker 5: one of those teams that are going to still try
- 18:00Speaker 5: and stop our run. I think we found out last
- 18:02Speaker 5: week is... Okay, we can beat you throwing it, so
- 18:05Speaker 5: don't be hesitant. And then, to me, that's kind of
- 18:08Speaker 5: what happened in the second game of the season when
- 18:11Speaker 5: we did run for about 160 yards. You loosen them
- 18:14Speaker 5: up more with the pass, and then you can sit
- 18:15Speaker 5: there and make them say, okay, we've got to play
- 18:18Speaker 5: more too deep, and we can start gashing them. So that's,
- 18:21Speaker 5: to me, it. I think they're going to have a
- 18:24Speaker 5: hard time moving the ball on us. Our defense is legit,
- 18:27Speaker 5: and as long as we don't turn the ball over
- 18:30Speaker 5: at home with the 12s, we're going to win this game.
- 18:32Speaker 4: It's all about matchups, right?
- 18:34Speaker 3: So the Hawks are fourth in the NFL in yards
- 18:37Speaker 3: per pass attempt. The Chargers are allowing 11.3 per completion.
- 18:42Speaker 5: Never heard of that before.
- 18:43Speaker 3: So Sam Darnold could really get busy this week. Sprinkle
- 18:47Speaker 3: in the run, and we should be okay. We shall see.
- 18:50Speaker 3: All right, when we come up next, you guys don't
- 18:52Speaker 3: go anywhere. We got Emmanuel Wilson right here on Hawks Live.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Welcome back to Hawks Live. I'm Michael Pompous with my guy,
- 19:02Speaker 3: Paul Moya.
- 19:03Speaker 5: There we go.
- 19:04Speaker 4: And we out here. We out on these streets, man.
- 19:06Speaker 3: We got our faithful out here checking us out. My
- 19:10Speaker 3: man asked me, he said, do I like the Apple
- 19:13Speaker 3: Cup in September?
- 19:14Speaker 4: I hate it. I want to be wearing a jacket, a.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Hoodie, what do you call it, the long johns and
- 19:20Speaker 3: all that stuff.
- 19:21Speaker 4: It's weird to me, but it is what it is.
- 19:23Speaker 5: They already played it?
- 19:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:25Speaker 5: I didn't know. Yeah.
- 19:26Speaker 4: Why would you know?
- 19:27Speaker 3: You don't pay attention to us like that.
- 19:29Speaker 5: You know who I don't pay attention to anymore?
- 19:31Speaker 6: Who?
- 19:32Speaker 5: UW.
- 19:33Speaker 4: Really?
- 19:34Speaker 5: Look, I went to Arizona State. I tolerate them. A
- 19:37Speaker 5: lot of my friends are UW fans. And so there's
- 19:40Speaker 5: been times where I've liked to follow them, particularly during
- 19:42Speaker 5: the basketball run. We had Nate Robinson and all those
- 19:45Speaker 5: guys and Isaiah Thomas. But now, because the whole NIL
- 19:49Speaker 5: thing and them and being a big 10, there's such
- 19:51Speaker 5: a disconnect for me. I just, I mean, they're not
- 19:54Speaker 5: in the pack 12 anymore. It's just, I don't know.
- 19:57Speaker 4: You're not in the Pac-12 anymore.
- 19:58Speaker 5: I know, but it's Arizona State. I follow Arizona State.
- 20:01Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 20:01Speaker 5: I don't follow SC and UCLA and Washington like I
- 20:05Speaker 5: used to. I used to follow because they're in the Pac.
- 20:08Speaker 4: Well, you did text me, come on Cougs, this past weekend.
- 20:10Speaker 5: I did. Why was that?
- 20:12Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 20:12Speaker 5: Who were they playing?
- 20:13Speaker 6: Your nemesis.
- 20:15Speaker 5: Arizona.
- 20:17Speaker 6: Arizona.
- 20:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:18Speaker 3: We're waiting to connect with Emmanuel Wilson. What did you
- 20:21Speaker 3: see from him? What did you like from him?
- 20:23Speaker 5: I like him. I mean, one, he's big back. tough guy.
- 20:27Speaker 5: But you know what I thought was really good, particularly
- 20:29Speaker 5: against Arizona, he makes people miss. It's not like he's
- 20:32Speaker 5: just a bruiser. I wasn't sure what to expect. I
- 20:35Speaker 5: didn't see him that much when he was at Green Bay.
- 20:38Speaker 5: He's got a really fascinating story, too, how he got here.
- 20:42Speaker 5: We'll ask him. I won't give that away yet. He's
- 20:45Speaker 5: been a bit of a godsend. When you have Price,
- 20:47Speaker 5: who's a rookie, feel bad. He's not a fumbler. That's
- 20:54Speaker 5: not going to happen. We cannot put that on him.
- 20:56Speaker 5: Don't put that on me type thing, right? Ricky Bobby.
- 21:00Speaker 5: But we cannot put that on him. But to have
- 21:02Speaker 5: a veteran guy, especially when Charbonnet has been out, I
- 21:06Speaker 5: think having, you know, Emmanuel Wilson has been really helpful.
- 21:09Speaker 6: All right.
- 21:09Speaker 4: Well, let's hear from the man himself, Emmanuel Wilson. Emmanuel,
- 21:12Speaker 4: how you doing? I'm good.
- 21:13Speaker 7: How about yourself?
- 21:15Speaker 4: Hey, we're great, man.
- 21:15Speaker 3: We appreciate you taking time on a Thursday. You're probably
- 21:18Speaker 3: watching film, watching a game, playing the game. Who knows
- 21:21Speaker 3: what you're.
- 21:21Speaker 6: Doing, man?
- 21:22Speaker 3: We just appreciate it. You got a cool story, man.
- 21:25Speaker 3: You come from Division II, Johnson C. Smith University. You
- 21:28Speaker 3: transferred to Fort Valley State, undrafted. You go to Green Bay.
- 21:33Speaker 3: What's this experience like for you? You're talking to two
- 21:36Speaker 3: undrafted guys ourselves, man. Talk to me what that experience
- 21:39Speaker 3: has been like.
- 21:41Speaker 7: Man, the experience is wonderful. Like coming to like when
- 21:45Speaker 7: I was in Green Bay and everything like that, learning
- 21:47Speaker 7: from Aaron Jones, A.J. Dillon, Patrick Taylor, just around those
- 21:53Speaker 7: group of guys, it was wonderful for me to actually learn.
- 21:57Speaker 7: involve my game, elevate my game to another level, and
- 22:00Speaker 7: then also learning from Josh Jacobs and Coach Ben Sermons.
- 22:03Speaker 6: It was a wonderful feeling.
- 22:07Speaker 7: Just being able to, you know, put on for, like,
- 22:10Speaker 7: undrafted guys and also.
- 22:13Speaker 6: Division II HBCU players.
- 22:15Speaker 7: It's a wonderful feeling.
- 22:17Speaker 5: Well, I had heard of Fort Valley State, and we're
- 22:20Speaker 5: football junkies in college and everything, so we follow Division II,
- 22:24Speaker 5: the FBS, all of those things. But I had never
- 22:28Speaker 5: heard of Johnson C. Smith University. One, tell us where
- 22:31Speaker 5: that is. And two, how did you end up getting there?
- 22:36Speaker 7: So Johnson C. Smith University is in Charlotte, North Carolina,
- 22:40Speaker 7: on Beta 4 Road. I mean, I ended up going
- 22:44Speaker 7: to that school because there was a situation where my
- 22:47Speaker 7: brother had ended up getting locked up.
- 22:49Speaker 6: My mom had.
- 22:51Speaker 7: schizophrenia. My sister was two to three years old at
- 22:54Speaker 7: the time, so I wanted to stay home. I could
- 22:57Speaker 7: have went to a Division I school. I had a
- 23:02Speaker 7: lot of schools looking at me, but it was me
- 23:05Speaker 7: not focusing on school as much that didn't make me land.
- 23:08Speaker 6: At a Division I school, but John C. Smith, it
- 23:12Speaker 6: was a wonderful HBCU school to go to.
- 23:15Speaker 7: Football program was going well now, but when I was
- 23:18Speaker 7: there at the time, it wasn't.
- 23:21Speaker 6: What it is now. I can tell you that.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Man, so you've experienced sacrifice at such a young age, man.
- 23:27Speaker 3: That's very mature of you. You know, I mean, I
- 23:31Speaker 3: appreciate that about you, man. Tell me about this running
- 23:35Speaker 3: back room, you know, the situation. You guys got three
- 23:39Speaker 3: guys right now who are competing for time. I watch
- 23:42Speaker 3: a lot of body language, but it seems like you
- 23:43Speaker 3: guys support each other. What's that RB room like?
- 23:47Speaker 6: Oh, man, the RB room, wonderful, man.
- 23:49Speaker 4: We all.
- 23:50Speaker 7: Yes, it's competing, but when somebody's out there, they're making
- 23:54Speaker 7: the plays, they're excited for each other because there's only
- 23:56Speaker 7: one running back that can be out there at the time. So,
- 23:59Speaker 7: you know, it's wonderful. We all learn from each other.
- 24:01Speaker 7: We always try to mark each other's game. And also,
- 24:04Speaker 7: like in the film room, we laugh a lot. We
- 24:08Speaker 7: do a little shadow boxing.
- 24:09Speaker 6: There and there.
- 24:11Speaker 7: And just learning for just more like a brotherhood in
- 24:15Speaker 7: that room.
- 24:16Speaker 5: What's strange is this is your fourth season and you
- 24:19Speaker 5: are the vet in that room. I mean, you got
- 24:22Speaker 5: Helani's been there for three years and, you know, Charbonnet's
- 24:25Speaker 5: been out. And then you got the young rook in Price.
- 24:29Speaker 5: So are you mentoring these guys? And I'll throw this
- 24:32Speaker 5: one for you as well. Tell us about Price and
- 24:36Speaker 5: how you keep his confidence up. I mean, I hate the,
- 24:39Speaker 5: we cannot pigeonhole him. He's a fumbler because he's not.
- 24:41Speaker 5: But how do you keep his confidence up?
- 24:44Speaker 7: Uh, we'd be telling them like, he's good. You know, uh,
- 24:47Speaker 7: he's a hell of a back in this league. Honestly,
- 24:49Speaker 7: just the way he can turn his speed on the
- 24:52Speaker 7: way he can catch the way he can track the
- 24:53Speaker 7: ball and everything like that. And wait, like he just
- 24:56Speaker 7: hits the hose when he sees it.
- 24:57Speaker 6: I'd be letting them know, like he got.
- 24:59Speaker 7: Shit and, uh, it don't matter about the mistakes you have,
- 25:02Speaker 7: but just keep going. And, um, everything's going to.
- 25:05Speaker 6: Fall in place.
- 25:05Speaker 7: So he just let the game come to you and
- 25:07Speaker 7: you're going to pop one. Like he almost did against, um, Arizona. So, uh,
- 25:12Speaker 7: You know, I just continue to tell him to keep going.
- 25:15Speaker 6: And me just being a vet.
- 25:16Speaker 7: In the room, I'm still, like, learning a lot, even
- 25:19Speaker 7: though I've been in the league for years. We've been
- 25:21Speaker 7: learning from Bayless Jones. He used to be a receiver.
- 25:24Speaker 7: Now he's a running back.
- 25:25Speaker 6: This is year six for him, I believe.
- 25:27Speaker 7: So we've been learning a lot from him. We just
- 25:29Speaker 7: try to motivate us and keep us going.
- 25:32Speaker 3: Hey, man, it's been kind of an up-and-down year as
- 25:34Speaker 3: far as the run game, right? You come out the
- 25:37Speaker 3: first week, rush for about 90-something yards, second week. a
- 25:40Speaker 3: buck 62 and then 44 last week. The common fan
- 25:45Speaker 3: might panic, right, and say, oh, my God, I was
- 25:47Speaker 3: going on one week with 44 yards. But how do
- 25:50Speaker 3: you guys handle that, the highs and the lows of
- 25:52Speaker 3: the run game? Because sometimes it's really just about being
- 25:54Speaker 3: a threat to run the football because everything else is
- 25:57Speaker 3: going to open up. Just walk me through the mentality
- 25:59Speaker 3: of that room when the numbers are up and the
- 26:02Speaker 3: numbers are down.
- 26:04Speaker 7: Really, we just approach the week the same, regardless of
- 26:07Speaker 7: we know in, like, In this league, you're not always
- 26:11Speaker 7: going to have 100 and some yard games unless like.
- 26:16Speaker 6: How can I put this?
- 26:20Speaker 7: Like every week is not going to be like 100
- 26:21Speaker 7: yards a game.
- 26:23Speaker 6: It's football. It happens.
- 26:24Speaker 7: So we just go attack the little details in practice
- 26:28Speaker 7: and just try to lean on the offense alignment to,
- 26:32Speaker 7: you know, make their right reads and get to their
- 26:34Speaker 7: right blocks. And it's up to us to, you know,
- 26:36Speaker 7: make the right reads coming off the ball and everything.
- 26:40Speaker 5: You know, there's times, and I was looking at the game,
- 26:42Speaker 5: and I said, wow, they got one more than you
- 26:45Speaker 5: guys can block. You know, there was times there was
- 26:47Speaker 5: nine guys in the box. They were dropping a safety down.
- 26:50Speaker 5: They had their true 3-4 where, you know, they had
- 26:52Speaker 5: a nose on the center. And I'm like, man, what
- 26:55Speaker 5: do you do here? Do you guys check out of that,
- 26:58Speaker 5: or do you guys still stay with the run saying,
- 27:00Speaker 5: you know what, we're committed to this. You know, we'll
- 27:04Speaker 5: throw when we need to throw. Yeah.
- 27:07Speaker 7: I can't even give you an answer to that, honestly.
- 27:10Speaker 7: Whatever play they call us, that's what we run with.
- 27:13Speaker 7: And we just try to execute the best.
- 27:15Speaker 6: Way we can.
- 27:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel it, man. Just go out there and
- 27:19Speaker 3: do it. The hardest thing I would assume for a
- 27:22Speaker 3: running back is just pass protection. It happens so fast.
- 27:26Speaker 3: You might be responsible for the back and to the right.
- 27:28Speaker 4: He runs a stunt.
- 27:29Speaker 3: He's to the left. Was that the hardest part for you?
- 27:32Speaker 3: And do you think that that is true now? to
- 27:36Speaker 3: rookie running backs.
- 27:37Speaker 4: Entering the league?
- 27:39Speaker 7: Yeah, it's true, too. It was hard for me coming
- 27:42Speaker 7: into the league because, like, I never really had to
- 27:44Speaker 7: pass protect in college. So I know, like, some guys
- 27:49Speaker 7: may have done it in college and stuff like that,
- 27:51Speaker 7: but as far as a rookie, it's a lot of
- 27:53Speaker 7: vets that have different type of moves. They like to
- 27:56Speaker 7: bull rush. They like to swim. They might hit you
- 27:59Speaker 7: with a half spin and turn back inside. You never
- 28:02Speaker 7: know what they're going to hit you with, but it's
- 28:03Speaker 7: all about studying film and just leaning right on your technique.
- 28:08Speaker 5: But we are fortunate to get you in the offseason.
- 28:10Speaker 5: What transpired that? Why did you end up wanting to
- 28:13Speaker 5: come to Seattle, and how did you get here?
- 28:16Speaker 7: Uh honestly um i was in miami during that time
- 28:20Speaker 7: when my agent had called me he was saying it
- 28:22Speaker 7: was between the 49ers and the seahawks i chose to
- 28:25Speaker 7: come to the seattle just because i can um for
- 28:29Speaker 7: one it was my childhood team i'll tell you that
- 28:31Speaker 7: for once my childhood team grew up watching them um
- 28:34Speaker 7: and then also just the opportunity to come here and
- 28:36Speaker 7: compete and just to be a part of this culture.
- 28:39Speaker 5: Good decision, by the way. We don't like them 49ers.
- 28:42Speaker 5: I know it.
- 28:43Speaker 6: I know it.
- 28:43Speaker 4: Hey, last one before we get you out of here.
- 28:47Speaker 4: We like to.
- 28:48Speaker 3: This is like a standard question that we always ask.
- 28:50Speaker 3: All right, what do you do on a Thursday? You're
- 28:52Speaker 3: done watching film. You're done rehabbing. What's Emmanuel doing during
- 28:56Speaker 3: his off time?
- 28:58Speaker 7: Really, man, I journal. I take my mental pretty serious,
- 29:02Speaker 7: so I journal right down what my day looked like.
- 29:06Speaker 7: And also, like, I talk to my... my mom, my brother,
- 29:11Speaker 7: my kids. So I just try to make time for
- 29:14Speaker 7: them outside of football, and I watch some TV every
- 29:16Speaker 7: now and then.
- 29:18Speaker 4: That's awesome, man.
- 29:19Speaker 3: Take care of that mental, take care of that body,
- 29:21Speaker 3: and we appreciate your time, man.
- 29:23Speaker 4: We'll talk to you soon.
- 29:24Speaker 6: Yes, sir. Appreciate you. All right.
- 29:26Speaker 4: That was Emmanuel Wilson.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Coming up next, we'll go around the NFL. What's going
- 29:31Speaker 3: down in the league? That's coming up next right here
- 29:33Speaker 3: on Hawks Live. I am Michael Bumpus. This is my guy,
- 29:38Speaker 3: Paul Moyer. and this is Hawks Live presented by the
- 29:41Speaker 3: Dining District at the Bellevue Collection every Thursday right here
- 29:44Speaker 3: on Seattle Sports 710. We're at Bellevue Square Central Court.
- 29:48Speaker 3: It is time now to go around the NFL. Look
- 29:51Speaker 3: at these Cleveland Browns, Moyer. 21-10 fourth quarter Deshaun, if
- 29:59Speaker 3: he keeps doing this, fans are going to be conflicted.
- 30:02Speaker 4: Do I cheer? Do I boo? Do I cheer for
- 30:05Speaker 4: the player? I don't root for the man.
- 30:07Speaker 3: I mean, there are a lot of players in the
- 30:10Speaker 3: league that are like that, but he's unique in his situation.
- 30:13Speaker 3: But I didn't expect this. This is for the first
- 30:15Speaker 3: place in the AFC North.
- 30:19Speaker 5: He's actually having a good game. He's 17 for 22,
- 30:22Speaker 5: almost 200 yards. He's got one touchdown. And again, to me,
- 30:30Speaker 5: he really hasn't played anybody yet. It's weird because it
- 30:34Speaker 5: just goes to show you if you win, they'll forgive you.
- 30:39Speaker 4: If you build it, they will come.
- 30:40Speaker 5: Yeah. Again, I don't know if he's ever going to
- 30:42Speaker 5: get cheered, but there may be less boos. That's about it.
- 30:46Speaker 4: There will be less boos.
- 30:47Speaker 3: What about Sean McVay, man?
- 30:49Speaker 4: He's an interesting guy.
- 30:50Speaker 5: Yeah, he is.
- 30:51Speaker 3: I mean, he flies his team over to Australia early,
- 30:54Speaker 3: and clearly he wasn't right.
- 30:57Speaker 4: The team wasn't right.
- 30:59Speaker 3: He makes a couple excuses, then he moves on. Last loss,
- 31:03Speaker 3: he goes up to the mic after the presser, well,
- 31:06Speaker 3: post-game presser, and he takes one question, and he's gone
- 31:09Speaker 3: in two minutes, and then his people come out, the
- 31:11Speaker 3: publicists come out and say, oh, well, everyone wasn't ready.
- 31:14Speaker 4: He got a.
- 31:15Speaker 3: Couple questions, and then he left, and he apologizes to
- 31:18Speaker 3: the press or whatnot, and then his PR.
- 31:21Speaker 4: Team calls everyone out.
- 31:22Speaker 3: Well, you guys should be on time. Paul, the Rams
- 31:25Speaker 3: didn't even have their stuff set up. All right, so
- 31:27Speaker 3: you know he was just trying to get out of there,
- 31:30Speaker 3: but yet he's been in the league, a head coach
- 31:32Speaker 3: 10 years now, one of the more successful offensive coordinators.
- 31:35Speaker 4: What are your thoughts on Sean McBride?
- 31:37Speaker 5: Well, I think you said he's an interesting guy. Look,
- 31:41Speaker 5: he's got an ego that's huge. I think the reason
- 31:44Speaker 5: why he gets away with his ego is he's very...
- 31:47Speaker 5: I think he's very transparent. You know, he tells you
- 31:50Speaker 5: like it is and you say, OK. And he's he's
- 31:53Speaker 5: very intelligent. I think some of these guys, they think
- 31:55Speaker 5: they're the smartest people in the room at times. And
- 31:58Speaker 5: he might be. I mean, he's he's a very gifted
- 32:01Speaker 5: offensive coordinator. But when all of a sudden you start
- 32:03Speaker 5: losing and this is a team that had one of
- 32:05Speaker 5: the highest odds going into a season to win a
- 32:10Speaker 5: Super Bowl. I mean, it was crazy. And now you've
- 32:12Speaker 5: lost two of three and haven't looked good either. You know,
- 32:16Speaker 5: I mean, just haven't looked good. So I look good.
- 32:21Speaker 5: You know, hopefully they're, whatever, 4-12 when we play them.
- 32:26Speaker 5: Maybe they'll be 4-11 when we play them, whatever, that week.
- 32:30Speaker 5: I just think it's a tough one. There's very few coaches.
- 32:33Speaker 5: You've seen them in the NBA, guys. like Phil Jackson
- 32:37Speaker 5: and Pat Riley's of the world that can grab a
- 32:39Speaker 5: super team, keep all their egos in check, and still
- 32:43Speaker 5: find a way to push through and win a championship.
- 32:47Speaker 5: You got 53 guys plus 17 in the practice squad.
- 32:51Speaker 5: You got to get 70 guys. Man, that's just, that's
- 32:54Speaker 5: tough to manage all those egos. And they're old on
- 32:57Speaker 5: top of that. You know, you got Stafford doesn't look
- 33:00Speaker 5: as good. I mean, again, 33 interceptions for a touchdown.
- 33:04Speaker 5: That's a remarkable stat in itself.
- 33:06Speaker 3: The easiest game to lose with a super team is
- 33:09Speaker 3: a football game because it doesn't matter. One man, two men,
- 33:14Speaker 3: three men can't affect the game like that. Now you've
- 33:16Speaker 3: got basketball. I've got two or three guys. You'll be
- 33:18Speaker 3: good to go. Hockey, all you need is really a center.
- 33:22Speaker 5: Really?
- 33:23Speaker 4: That's a guy, yeah.
- 33:23Speaker 5: You know that? I didn't know you knew hockey.
- 33:26Speaker 4: I do the hockey.
- 33:27Speaker 5: Okay.
- 33:27Speaker 6: I do the hockey.
- 33:28Speaker 5: Love that.
- 33:28Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 33:29Speaker 3: So you can build a super team in football, but
- 33:32Speaker 3: so much has to go right for one play to
- 33:34Speaker 3: be successful that, Those two or three guys that you have.
- 33:37Speaker 4: You look at the Rams.
- 33:38Speaker 3: Right now, they have Matthew Stafford, Devontae Adams, Miles Garrett,
- 33:43Speaker 3: Aaron Donald. Four gold jackets on the field right now,
- 33:47Speaker 3: and they're not able to get it done. Do I
- 33:48Speaker 3: think this is going to be the case all year?
- 33:49Speaker 5: No.
- 33:50Speaker 4: I think they'll figure it out. They're well coached. You've
- 33:51Speaker 4: got talent. Things are going to happen for them.
- 33:53Speaker 5: Well, I hope they lose early. They've got another tough game.
- 33:58Speaker 5: They've got a bunch of tough games coming up. And again,
- 34:00Speaker 5: maybe at the end of the season, other than they
- 34:02Speaker 5: got to play us twice in the last three games,
- 34:04Speaker 5: maybe their schedule eases up a little bit. So hopefully
- 34:07Speaker 5: their record is poor. But man, when you start losing,
- 34:12Speaker 5: it's why this game is so critical. Man, streaks on
- 34:16Speaker 5: the losing side are bad, man. They're evil. They're dark.
- 34:20Speaker 5: They're hard to get out of. You just start to
- 34:22Speaker 5: lose your confidence. You start second-guessing yourself as coaches, as players.
- 34:26Speaker 5: I mean, you just don't want to. You know, you
- 34:29Speaker 5: can win two out of three and be fine. You
- 34:31Speaker 5: lose two games in a row, man, there's doubt going
- 34:34Speaker 5: into that next one. And guess what? Our next game
- 34:36Speaker 5: is against 49ers after this. This is a critical game.
- 34:41Speaker 5: And so, again, I look at the Rams, same thing.
- 34:43Speaker 5: All of a sudden, you lose another one, and you
- 34:44Speaker 5: start off one and three. It's not as much fun
- 34:47Speaker 5: to go to practice.
- 34:48Speaker 4: I mean, it's just.
- 34:50Speaker 5: Everything starts, you know, imploding. So he's got a tough job.
- 34:54Speaker 5: They're really talented. I'm like you. I go, they're going
- 34:57Speaker 5: to find a way to win. But if they don't,
- 35:00Speaker 5: this thing could crumble. Because you don't see super teams
- 35:03Speaker 5: in the NFL. It's too hard because of the salary cap.
- 35:07Speaker 5: Usually the quarterback stays. Here they traded and got a
- 35:11Speaker 5: great quarterback. They traded and somehow got Miles Garrett. They
- 35:14Speaker 5: found a way to get Aaron Donald back. They went
- 35:16Speaker 5: and traded for two cornerbacks.
- 35:19Speaker 3: I'm like.
- 35:20Speaker 5: I don't even know how they're doing it. I mean,
- 35:22Speaker 5: they're not going to, I don't know how they're going
- 35:23Speaker 5: to pay for their team in the next few years.
- 35:25Speaker 5: You just don't see that very often. And there's no bigger,
- 35:28Speaker 5: I don't want to say egos. There's no bigger type
- 35:32Speaker 5: A human beings in the football locker room. There's egos
- 35:38Speaker 5: in baseball and basketball. But I mean, type A tough guys,
- 35:42Speaker 5: you walk in a room, you better be a leader
- 35:44Speaker 5: because you'll lose that team quick. And I just think
- 35:46Speaker 5: he's in a tough situation right now.
- 35:48Speaker 3: Last one, got about a minute left. I saw a theory.
- 35:50Speaker 3: I was doom scrolling on Instagram. Couldn't sleep, 3.30 in
- 35:54Speaker 3: the morning. I'm on Instagram scrolling. And there have been
- 35:58Speaker 3: a lot of quarterbacks who have been hurt this year.
- 36:00Speaker 4: And a crazy theory. You tell me what you think.
- 36:03Speaker 4: All right. I forgot where this guy was from. Maybe
- 36:05Speaker 4: the East Coast. He was like, you know what?
- 36:07Speaker 3: The reason why we're seeing all these injuries, especially from quarterbacks,
- 36:11Speaker 3: is because the defensive line is evolving. You have guys
- 36:15Speaker 3: who are 250, running four fours and four fives.
- 36:18Speaker 4: They're getting bigger, faster, and stronger.
- 36:20Speaker 3: And his thing was, what do we do to change
- 36:22Speaker 3: the game to make it safer for quarterbacks?
- 36:24Speaker 4: Like, do we make the field bigger? Do we widen splits? Like,
- 36:27Speaker 4: what do we do?
- 36:28Speaker 3: So going off of that, with quarterbacks going down at
- 36:31Speaker 3: the rate that they are, how important is the backup quarterback?
- 36:35Speaker 5: Well, it's important. Obviously, it's critical. And look, part of
- 36:37Speaker 5: my thing is... What do we do to make it
- 36:40Speaker 5: safer for defensive backs? I mean, just the quarterbacks?
- 36:44Speaker 4: Says the DB.
- 36:45Speaker 5: Well, look, I think the other thing is, look, quarterbacks
- 36:47Speaker 5: know the rules now, right? They take advantage of it.
- 36:50Speaker 5: And we see Patrick Mahomes. We saw the quarterback from Oregon.
- 36:55Speaker 5: Get down. And I'm dead serious, and some are going
- 36:59Speaker 5: to think I'm joking. I think we're close to being
- 37:02Speaker 5: at the point where if they break the pocket, it's
- 37:06Speaker 5: two-hand touch. I'm dead serious because they're testing the DBs
- 37:13Speaker 5: and linebackers. Are you going out of bounds? Are you sliding? Oh,
- 37:16Speaker 5: now you're going to run over me? You're just putting
- 37:19Speaker 5: the onus on the defensive guys to protect you. So
- 37:23Speaker 5: if we're truly going to do that and if the
- 37:24Speaker 5: quarterbacks are so important, then you know what? Let's just
- 37:28Speaker 5: do this thing and just say it's two-hand touch and
- 37:31Speaker 5: you're down.
- 37:32Speaker 3: I say just stop and raise your hand.
- 37:34Speaker 6: You're done.
- 37:34Speaker 3: Yes. You're out to play. We're already treating them like babies.
- 37:38Speaker 3: Let's go ahead and stop the agenda.
- 37:39Speaker 4: All right. More to do when we come back.
- 37:41Speaker 3: We'll be joined by Julian Neal in person right here
- 37:44Speaker 3: on Hawks Live. Along with my guy, Paul Moyer, I'm
- 37:48Speaker 3: Michael Bumbus. This is Hawks Live. Every Thursday, we are.
- 37:52Speaker 4: Right here doing our thing.
- 37:54Speaker 3: We'll be joined by Julian Neal right here in a
- 37:56Speaker 3: little bit. I watched the film on Julian Neal, and
- 37:59Speaker 3: I like it.
- 38:00Speaker 4: Physical corner. Started at Fresno. Arkansas. And I like the film, Moyer.
- 38:07Speaker 4: In college, I like the film.
- 38:09Speaker 5: I think he can play a lot of positions, too.
- 38:11Speaker 5: I actually, when I first saw him, I go, you know,
- 38:14Speaker 5: former safety, I go, that could be a safety right there.
- 38:16Speaker 5: But he's got that length. You're about to see him.
- 38:19Speaker 5: He's 6'2, 200 pounds. The guy's got a 40-inch vertical,
- 38:22Speaker 5: which I'll ask about that. 40-inch vertical. I remember when
- 38:25Speaker 5: Michael Jordan had a 40-inch vertical. And you said, this
- 38:28Speaker 5: guy's out of the world. And we got a guy
- 38:30Speaker 5: here walking up here that's, Another one of those type
- 38:33Speaker 5: of athletes. Really, really incredible.
- 38:36Speaker 4: All right.
- 38:37Speaker 3: We are joined now by the man himself, Julian Neal.
- 38:41Speaker 4: Nice to meet you, man. We'll get them all set up.
- 38:43Speaker 5: We're just, we're just singing your praises. We're talking about
- 38:46Speaker 5: 40 inch verticals and your size. And I got a
- 38:51Speaker 5: feeling you've got that basketball prowess.
- 38:54Speaker 3: Apparently he was all area in the Bay.
- 38:57Speaker 4: You don't just do that, man. You a Hooper for real? Yeah,
- 39:00Speaker 4: I was a Hooper. What, what position? Just everywhere.
- 39:03Speaker 6: Everywhere.
- 39:04Speaker 4: What high school? Mission High School in San Francisco. Yeah,
- 39:08Speaker 4: I'm familiar.
- 39:08Speaker 3: I spent a lot of time in the Bay, so yeah,
- 39:10Speaker 3: I'm familiar with that.
- 39:11Speaker 4: Oh, really?
- 39:11Speaker 5: What part?
- 39:11Speaker 3: Yeah, well, Pac-12 Network, we were in downtown San Francisco.
- 39:16Speaker 3: Then we moved to San Ramon, but I fly to
- 39:18Speaker 3: Oakland all the time, so I'm just, I'm bouncing around.
- 39:20Speaker 4: Yeah, that's nice. Bouncing around, yep.
- 39:21Speaker 5: Did you think that you might play basketball in college?
- 39:25Speaker 4: Oh, no, I wasn't that good.
- 39:26Speaker 6: Really?
- 39:27Speaker 8: I was just the strong dude on the court. just
- 39:30Speaker 8: dunking the ball, just being athletic. That's all I was doing.
- 39:35Speaker 3: I was just telling Moyer, man, the first thing I
- 39:37Speaker 3: saw when I watched your film at Arkansas was just
- 39:40Speaker 3: you just like to hit.
- 39:41Speaker 4: Where does that come from? That's always been a part
- 39:43Speaker 4: of you? Nah, really.
- 39:45Speaker 8: Like Pop Warner football, they always said I was scared
- 39:48Speaker 8: to hit. So it was just crazy because I played
- 39:50Speaker 8: receiver growing up, so it was like just that transformation
- 39:54Speaker 8: of me going to DB and then being able to
- 39:57Speaker 8: hit like that, I kind of surprised myself. Really, that's
- 40:02Speaker 8: just how I went.
- 40:03Speaker 5: Well, rumor is you were also a defensive end at
- 40:06Speaker 5: one point. Is this true?
- 40:08Speaker 6: That's correct.
- 40:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I played everywhere. Like I said, I was... I
- 40:11Speaker 4: was everywhere.
- 40:13Speaker 5: Like edge rusher, go get the quarterback type thing?
- 40:16Speaker 4: Yeah, no technique. Just go get the QB. Just go
- 40:19Speaker 4: on the outside, contain, and go in.
- 40:21Speaker 5: So you had an interesting journey. So you're a Northern
- 40:24Speaker 5: Cal kid. Makes sense to go to Fresno State. I mean,
- 40:27Speaker 5: it's just an hour and a half, two-hour drive, I guess,
- 40:29Speaker 5: from there. So that makes sense. And then, I think
- 40:33Speaker 5: you were there three or four years. Yeah, four years.
- 40:37Speaker 5: So in 2004, but then you, or 24, you commit
- 40:39Speaker 5: to Stanford.
- 40:40Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 40:41Speaker 5: Don't go there, end up in Arkansas. Just give them,
- 40:45Speaker 5: how'd that all transpire?
- 40:48Speaker 8: So basically, after the 2024 season at Fresno State, I
- 40:54Speaker 8: wanted to enter the portal. but there was a problem
- 40:58Speaker 8: because I wanted to get my degree. I was getting
- 41:00Speaker 8: my degree in accounting. I didn't want that to go
- 41:02Speaker 8: to waste because if I would have gotten a portal
- 41:04Speaker 8: and left, I would have lost all my credits going
- 41:07Speaker 8: to another school. So when I got in a portal,
- 41:10Speaker 8: I told the coaches, like every coach that was recruiting me,
- 41:13Speaker 8: I told them, I'll go to your school only if
- 41:16Speaker 8: you'll wait for me to come in the summer so
- 41:18Speaker 8: I could graduate in May.
- 41:20Speaker 4: And it came down to Cal, I think Northwestern and Stanford.
- 41:24Speaker 8: And ultimately I picked Stanford um, you know, the whole
- 41:28Speaker 8: NIL things, it was really, um, they just, you know,
- 41:32Speaker 8: gave me the best package and, um, that's how it happened.
- 41:35Speaker 8: Then they fired the head coach, you know, all that
- 41:38Speaker 8: different stuff was going on. Some, some stuff I didn't
- 41:41Speaker 8: stand for and I got back in the portal and
- 41:44Speaker 8: Arkansas just came through.
- 41:45Speaker 3: That's funny because I hear my, what I hear about
- 41:49Speaker 3: Stanford is that they are stingy with NIL. They're not
- 41:52Speaker 3: letting people get in early. Like they're, They're behind the
- 41:55Speaker 3: game when it comes to it. So they must have
- 41:56Speaker 3: saw something in you and be like, all right, we
- 41:57Speaker 3: got to get this dude right here, man.
- 42:00Speaker 4: What do you like about your game?
- 42:01Speaker 3: I said the physicality, but is there something else that
- 42:04Speaker 3: you feel like, you know, you excel at?
- 42:08Speaker 8: I think my feet work. My footwork and my size is.
- 42:15Speaker 4: Really good. I think that's what I kind of pride
- 42:17Speaker 4: myself with.
- 42:18Speaker 8: Especially just being an off man, being able to backpedal,
- 42:21Speaker 8: being able to turn and run.
- 42:23Speaker 4: All that type of stuff. That's where the hoop comes in. Yeah.
- 42:26Speaker 5: Well, I know they got big plans for you, but
- 42:29Speaker 5: you get nicked up in training camp, and so you're out.
- 42:32Speaker 5: Just tell me where you are now. I know that
- 42:35Speaker 5: was disappointing for you and them because you got to
- 42:38Speaker 5: get reps, man, in the NFL. But how are you feeling,
- 42:41Speaker 5: and where do you feel your game is at this point?
- 42:43Speaker 5: Maybe just from a mental standpoint, too.
- 42:47Speaker 8: Just trying to get back in there, trying to learn.
- 42:48Speaker 8: You know, now it's very limited reps. since we're in
- 42:53Speaker 8: the season. I'm just trying to take it in as
- 42:55Speaker 8: much as I can, watching film, getting in with coaches,
- 42:58Speaker 8: just trying to earn. I don't want anything to be
- 43:03Speaker 8: given to me. I'm not entitled to anything, so I
- 43:05Speaker 8: understand what's going on. I'm just trying to make my
- 43:09Speaker 8: stance on special teams right now and earn my way
- 43:13Speaker 8: on the field.
- 43:14Speaker 4: Or whatever happens. And whatever happens, just be ready also.
- 43:18Speaker 8: So from a mindset standpoint and from a mental standpoint,
- 43:22Speaker 8: I'm just trying to stay ready, keep my body healthy,
- 43:25Speaker 8: and stay in the playbook.
- 43:26Speaker 5: Is this a hard defense to learn? I mean, you
- 43:30Speaker 5: watch it, and I know Coach McDonald likes, you know,
- 43:32Speaker 5: there's a lot of match-up zone stuff as well, and
- 43:34Speaker 5: you guys, certain blitzes. But just from where you came from,
- 43:37Speaker 5: is it that much different?
- 43:39Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 43:41Speaker 8: It's the best defense in the NFL for a reason.
- 43:43Speaker 8: And I have to tell myself that, like, dang, okay,
- 43:47Speaker 8: this is different. Like, everything about this is just different.
- 43:50Speaker 4: Like, I've never... I don't think I've ever did anything
- 43:53Speaker 4: like this before.
- 43:54Speaker 6: In my life.
- 43:55Speaker 8: And that's just exciting for me as well, just being
- 43:59Speaker 8: able to excel at that.
- 44:01Speaker 3: That's cool to hear, man, because I feel like your
- 44:03Speaker 3: generation is in such a special time. Because when I
- 44:06Speaker 3: was coming up, corners weren't your size. Linebackers were big
- 44:10Speaker 3: as heck. You know what I mean? It's almost positionless
- 44:13Speaker 3: football at some point with this defense.
- 44:17Speaker 4: But you played big-time football already. You played in the SEC.
- 44:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:20Speaker 4: You're going to play in front of 80,000, 100,000.
- 44:23Speaker 3: Not that many at Lumen, but I would assume I
- 44:26Speaker 3: played against SEC teams in college. I would assume that
- 44:30Speaker 3: you get that type of energy. How did the SEC
- 44:32Speaker 3: prepare you for the NFL?
- 44:34Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 44:36Speaker 8: Well, like my Texas A & M game, I think
- 44:38Speaker 8: loudest game I was at probably was the Tennessee game.
- 44:43Speaker 8: That prepared me for Lumen, but I'm not going to lie.
- 44:46Speaker 4: Lumen, that's a difference.
- 44:48Speaker 6: Really?
- 44:49Speaker 8: Like, the whole ground feel like it's shaking and it's
- 44:51Speaker 8: just like everybody is bought in in the stadium. I'm
- 44:54Speaker 8: looking around, like, all the fans, like, they're just putting
- 44:57Speaker 8: their heart into it when the offense is on third down.
- 45:01Speaker 8: And it's like, dang, it's like, it just feel like
- 45:03Speaker 8: literally just roaring. And I'm like, wow, I've actually never
- 45:06Speaker 8: heard anything like this before. Like, college may have more
- 45:09Speaker 8: people at the game, but NFL, the fans, y'all are
- 45:14Speaker 8: way more into it.
- 45:15Speaker 4: Like, that's what I would say.
- 45:16Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 45:17Speaker 5: Yeah, they don't sit down here either, which is pretty crazy.
- 45:21Speaker 5: You know, it's funny because Coach McDonald, and before that,
- 45:24Speaker 5: Pete Carroll, you know, they always praised the 12s. They
- 45:27Speaker 5: always praised them, and rightfully so. What are Mondays like?
- 45:32Speaker 5: You know, I played seven years. You know, Mondays were uncomfortable.
- 45:38Speaker 5: Are they uncomfortable, or is it more teaching? Is it
- 45:40Speaker 5: more positive? How is that structured for you guys?
- 45:43Speaker 8: I think it's... It's more like a regroup and process.
- 45:50Speaker 8: When we came back Monday, Coach Mike, you know, he
- 45:54Speaker 8: came in the team meeting room. He's like, yeah, yeah,
- 45:58Speaker 8: I know what happened. But, you know, coming back in
- 46:02Speaker 8: on Monday and being able to see you guys' faces
- 46:05Speaker 8: just made me feel a lot better. And that has
- 46:08Speaker 8: stuck with me because I'm like, dang, yeah, like, you know,
- 46:10Speaker 8: we're all in this together. So I think that should
- 46:14Speaker 8: paint a picture of how Mondays are We all get
- 46:16Speaker 8: to come back, see each other, and just get back
- 46:19Speaker 8: to work. Nobody's pointing fingers at anybody. It is uncomfortable.
- 46:23Speaker 8: You've got to get better. That's how you get better.
- 46:25Speaker 8: But we all come together. We all know we're in
- 46:28Speaker 8: this together. We have one goal, and that's to stay
- 46:30Speaker 8: together and do what we've.
- 46:32Speaker 6: Got to do.
- 46:33Speaker 3: I think it's important for people to know that you
- 46:37Speaker 3: guys are human beings. You're not just a guy... with
- 46:40Speaker 3: a jersey on. That's what you do on Sundays. Obviously,
- 46:42Speaker 3: that's what you do for your occupation, but you're a
- 46:45Speaker 3: human being. So when I hear the hate on Twitter
- 46:48Speaker 3: and all that stuff, it drives me crazy. So I
- 46:51Speaker 3: think it's important that we just get to know you.
- 46:52Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 46:53Speaker 3: So people have an idea of what you like to
- 46:54Speaker 3: do and who you are. What do you do back home?
- 46:58Speaker 3: When you go home, what's the first thing you're going
- 47:00Speaker 3: to do?
- 47:01Speaker 8: First thing I'm going to do when I go back home,
- 47:04Speaker 8: definitely go visit my family. I like to go back
- 47:07Speaker 8: to my high school. just talk to some of my
- 47:10Speaker 8: old coaches. I like to just go around the neighborhood.
- 47:14Speaker 8: Like one thing I do like to do, I really
- 47:16Speaker 8: like to go around the neighborhood, especially like who I
- 47:18Speaker 8: am today.
- 47:20Speaker 4: Like they all know my face.
- 47:21Speaker 8: So just like to, like I said, go around the neighborhood,
- 47:25Speaker 8: walk around, probably shoot some hoops at the local gym. Like,
- 47:28Speaker 8: you know, it's the little things that matter when it
- 47:30Speaker 8: comes to trying to influence the younger generation, especially around
- 47:33Speaker 8: my neighborhood.
- 47:33Speaker 4: So it's like, that's one thing I do love to do. Yeah.
- 47:37Speaker 5: You guys have an interesting group of DBs, personality-wise. Share that.
- 47:43Speaker 5: I mean, you got Julian Love, who seems really professional.
- 47:46Speaker 5: He's the mature, he's the father of that group. You
- 47:50Speaker 5: got Witherspoon, who's, you know, full energy. Describe that room
- 47:54Speaker 5: and maybe just who are some of the personalities in there.
- 47:57Speaker 8: I mean, with Spoon, like I tell other people with him,
- 48:00Speaker 8: he just don't stop. Like, he just don't stop talking, right? Like,
- 48:04Speaker 8: he just one of those dudes, like, he going, like,
- 48:07Speaker 8: If you were in a room with him, the room
- 48:08Speaker 8: would never be quiet. Like, I'm so serious. Julian Love,
- 48:13Speaker 8: he's just one of those people who is just, like,
- 48:14Speaker 8: very professional. Like, you know, we'll be in the meetings.
- 48:16Speaker 8: He'll be like, he'll just be so professional. It's crazy
- 48:20Speaker 8: because he told me, he was like, yeah, like, being
- 48:23Speaker 8: a rookie is hard, bro. Like, you know, we just
- 48:24Speaker 8: had one of those talks. And he was like, yeah,
- 48:26Speaker 8: when I was a rookie, they used to make fun
- 48:28Speaker 8: of me for being professional. Like, I was a dork and,
- 48:31Speaker 8: you know, stuff like that. And I was like, dang.
- 48:34Speaker 8: And then we had Namaya Pritchett. He just does his work,
- 48:38Speaker 8: comes in, you know, a quiet dude. You know, we
- 48:42Speaker 8: got the rookies. We got Dansby, Andre Fuller. We came
- 48:46Speaker 8: in all together. We all just come together, and we
- 48:49Speaker 8: all just work.
- 48:50Speaker 6: But, yeah.
- 48:51Speaker 3: So I grew up. Y'all don't yell at me, okay?
- 48:55Speaker 3: I grew up in L.A. We had no football team.
- 48:58Speaker 3: I grew up a 49er fan, right? All right, boo.
- 49:01Speaker 3: All right, get it out.
- 49:02Speaker 6: Get it out.
- 49:03Speaker 4: But, obviously, as soon as I.
- 49:04Speaker 3: Played for the Hawks, now I work for my alliance,
- 49:07Speaker 3: It's with the Seahawks. So who did you grow up watching,
- 49:10Speaker 3: and who was your favorite player?
- 49:12Speaker 4: I'm not going to lie.
- 49:13Speaker 5: Be careful.
- 49:14Speaker 4: I grew up watching the Niners. I assume so. So
- 49:17Speaker 4: where I grew up at, the stadium, I was a fan.
- 49:20Speaker 4: to see the stadium from my window.
- 49:21Speaker 8: So during, like, Sundays or whatever they was playing, I
- 49:24Speaker 8: would be able to see the fireworks and stuff like that.
- 49:26Speaker 8: And I think that drove me to want to be
- 49:28Speaker 8: there as well, you know, be in the NFL. Who
- 49:34Speaker 8: I grew up watching, I really liked– I'm not going
- 49:38Speaker 8: to lie, I really like Patrick Willis. He was just
- 49:41Speaker 8: a hard hitter, especially when I was playing Madden and stuff,
- 49:44Speaker 8: I used to use him. Adrian Peterson is someone that
- 49:49Speaker 8: I really like to watch growing up.
- 49:51Speaker 5: Patrick Willis, I mean, even a 49er, he's a hard
- 49:54Speaker 5: guy not to like. He was such a good player.
- 49:56Speaker 5: So when you say you were by the stadium, was
- 49:58Speaker 5: it Candlestick? Yeah, Candlestick.
- 50:00Speaker 4: That was old school, yeah.
- 50:00Speaker 5: That's how old I am. I played in that thing.
- 50:02Speaker 5: That was a terrible stadium, terrible wind.
- 50:04Speaker 4: Windy as heck.
- 50:05Speaker 5: Oh, it was horrible.
- 50:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 50:06Speaker 5: I mean, just the way he had to go into
- 50:08Speaker 5: the locker room down these steps in bad weather. Sometimes
- 50:11Speaker 5: it would rain down to the steps. Not good. So
- 50:14Speaker 5: that's where he grew up. So you were a 49er fan.
- 50:16Speaker 5: So what's it like now?
- 50:17Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 50:18Speaker 5: You guys got the 49ers in two weeks, man. Are
- 50:21Speaker 5: you going to be a little awe of them? Not
- 50:24Speaker 5: like from a football standpoint, like, man, that's my team.
- 50:28Speaker 4: No, no.
- 50:30Speaker 5: Good answer.
- 50:31Speaker 8: You know, this is where I'm employed at, and this
- 50:35Speaker 8: is where I'm going to give my all.
- 50:36Speaker 4: I'm not worried about.
- 50:38Speaker 8: I wasn't that big of a Niners fan.
- 50:40Speaker 6: Don't get me wrong.
- 50:41Speaker 8: I mean, I'll be able to see the stadium, but
- 50:44Speaker 8: I wasn't crazy about them. But You know, we do
- 50:48Speaker 8: have them in two weeks, and I know the whole
- 50:52Speaker 8: city is.
- 50:52Speaker 5: Going to be watching. The 12s hate the 49ers. There's
- 50:58Speaker 5: no other team that we hate more than the 49ers,
- 51:00Speaker 5: and rightfully so. So you think it's– is that one
- 51:04Speaker 5: on the road? Whenever we play them at home, you
- 51:08Speaker 5: think it's– you heard it loud? Oh, man, you wait.
- 51:11Speaker 5: It's going to be crazy.
- 51:12Speaker 6: Okay, wait.
- 51:13Speaker 3: My first game was against the Niners. So I was
- 51:17Speaker 3: a bit in awe. I'm about to beat up on
- 51:18Speaker 3: the team that I grew up playing against. But, Julian, man,
- 51:21Speaker 3: we appreciate your time, man. That was Thursday. You got
- 51:23Speaker 3: things you can do.
- 51:24Speaker 4: Give it up one more time for Julian Neal.
- 51:25Speaker 6: Thank you. Thank you.
- 51:26Speaker 3: All right, when we come back, we'll go inside the
- 51:28Speaker 3: film room. That's next right here on Hawks Live. Along
- 51:34Speaker 3: with Paul Moyer, I'm Michael Bumpus. This is Hawks Live. Man,
- 51:37Speaker 3: we were just joined by Julian Neal. He's got like
- 51:41Speaker 3: a calmness about him. But something tells me he turns
- 51:44Speaker 3: it up. You know, when he's on that football field.
- 51:46Speaker 4: I like that.
- 51:46Speaker 5: He's going to be a good player. Great athlete. I mean,
- 51:49Speaker 5: when I remember him coming out, I said, he just
- 51:51Speaker 5: needs a year of seasoning. He needs to be around
- 51:53Speaker 5: NFL guys. He's got to believe that he can play
- 51:57Speaker 5: in this league. But athletically and toughness.
- 52:00Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 52:00Speaker 5: I mean, he's the sky's the limit for him.
- 52:03Speaker 6: Yes, sir.
- 52:03Speaker 5: All right.
- 52:04Speaker 3: Let's get into this film room.
- 52:05Speaker 6: Paul Moyer.
- 52:06Speaker 4: Want to break down some film?
- 52:07Speaker 3: All right, this first play, Sam Darnold finds JSN for
- 52:10Speaker 3: a one-yard touchdown.
- 52:11Speaker 5: Barner goes in motion. Sam takes a shotgun snap, rolls,
- 52:14Speaker 5: throws nearside. Ball is caught. Touchdown, Seahawks!
- 52:17Speaker 2: JSN with the catch on the right side of the
- 52:21Speaker 2: end zone, and all he did was run a little bit.
- 52:24Speaker 5: Of an out. Had to get my hmm in there.
- 52:28Speaker 4: That was Moyer. Moyer was all over this call, man.
- 52:31Speaker 6: All over this call.
- 52:31Speaker 4: What'd you see?
- 52:32Speaker 5: Well, what I did say is you can see him,
- 52:34Speaker 5: but you can't stop him. Look, see, that's what I did. But,
- 52:40Speaker 5: you know, I'll let you describe the play, but it's
- 52:43Speaker 5: just a sprint out. It's one of those flurry calls,
- 52:46Speaker 5: and it's a nothing burger. It's just one-on-one with the
- 52:50Speaker 5: corner that they know. The corner's in perfect position, but
- 52:56Speaker 5: I don't know what he does with his body, talking
- 52:59Speaker 5: about JSN. A lot of times as a DB, I feel,
- 53:04Speaker 5: I'd be careful how I say this. I don't want
- 53:07Speaker 5: this to come off wrong. Like one of these Charles
- 53:09Speaker 5: Barkley moments of bodying up people. But you feel the presence. Yeah,
- 53:15Speaker 5: I don't want to say whatever. I'm worried I'm going
- 53:17Speaker 5: to say a word that's not going to sound right.
- 53:20Speaker 5: And so as soon as you feel the separation, you immediately,
- 53:23Speaker 5: I get pressure back on your shoulder and stuff. JSN
- 53:27Speaker 5: on this one, I mean, when he made the move,
- 53:30Speaker 5: and I think it's also just the quickness and explosiveness
- 53:33Speaker 5: he has for a step or two. I mean, he
- 53:35Speaker 5: creates like two yards in a three-yard window. I don't
- 53:39Speaker 5: even know how you do that. So I don't know.
- 53:40Speaker 5: He's just amazing.
- 53:43Speaker 3: We call this, I used to coach my guys up
- 53:45Speaker 3: and say, put him to sleep.
- 53:47Speaker 4: And that's what he does.
- 53:48Speaker 3: Off the line, he walks a little bit, and then
- 53:51Speaker 3: it's the burst, and then he breaks down. The DB
- 53:53Speaker 3: has to respond to everything that we do.
- 53:56Speaker 4: You have to respect it.
- 53:57Speaker 3: So even the walk off the line, he's like, what
- 54:00Speaker 3: the heck is this guy doing? It's not like he
- 54:01Speaker 3: hasn't seen it before, but he's kind of guessing right there.
- 54:04Speaker 3: And Jay is just special, man, because some of the
- 54:07Speaker 3: way he runs routes, I wouldn't coach a kid to
- 54:10Speaker 3: do that. But he's so special. He can be a
- 54:12Speaker 3: little high and still snap off with force. He can
- 54:15Speaker 3: walk off the line of scrimmage, put you to sleep,
- 54:17Speaker 3: and do his thing. So, no, this is Sam Darnold
- 54:21Speaker 3: knew where he was going. He knew he was a man.
- 54:23Speaker 5: 101.
- 54:23Speaker 3: I'm sprinting to the right.
- 54:26Speaker 6: 2J is in.
- 54:26Speaker 4: I'm going to put on that pylon, and 11 is
- 54:28Speaker 4: going to make a play for me.
- 54:29Speaker 5: Yeah, it really is. The reason why I say that is,
- 54:32Speaker 5: as a DB in the end zone, I know you
- 54:34Speaker 5: don't have that many options. You're not going to run
- 54:37Speaker 5: by me. I mean, it's 10 yards. I mean, I'm
- 54:40Speaker 5: already in position. I'm inside technique on you. The only
- 54:44Speaker 5: place you really can go is out or back to
- 54:47Speaker 5: the line of scrimmage. And he gets... Again, I think
- 54:51Speaker 5: there's like three yards to play with, and he gets
- 54:53Speaker 5: two-yard separation on that. It's a great throw, too, and
- 54:56Speaker 5: a great catch. But, yeah, he's an amazing player.
- 54:59Speaker 3: All right, this next play, Sam Darnall finds JSN for
- 55:01Speaker 3: an 11-yard touchdown.
- 55:02Speaker 5: Four-man rush by Washington. The look to throw inside.
- 55:05Speaker 2: It's caught.
- 55:06Speaker 3: It's a touchdown.
- 55:08Speaker 5: Seahawks.
- 55:09Speaker 2: JSN says, throw a flag on me. I'll show you.
- 55:12Speaker 2: I'll catch an 11-yard dart from Sam Darnall. He does
- 55:16Speaker 2: under the goal post. Seattle is a point away from
- 55:19Speaker 2: tying it up.
- 55:21Speaker 5: Who would have thought that they would have tied it up?
- 55:24Speaker 5: Let me describe just what they're playing. They're playing quarters
- 55:27Speaker 5: in this one. I don't like how they play quarters
- 55:29Speaker 5: because they really just created man-to-man for the safety and
- 55:33Speaker 5: the corner. But the corner's in really good position. He's
- 55:36Speaker 5: inside technique, I think, initially. I might be wrong on that.
- 55:39Speaker 5: I'm not watching it right now. But JSN stems outside
- 55:43Speaker 5: just a little bit, and the corner bites on it immediately.
- 55:47Speaker 5: And it's not like, oh, I jumped two, three yards outside.
- 55:52Speaker 5: He just kind of slid outside, and as soon as
- 55:54Speaker 5: JSN saw that, he broke right back inside of him.
- 55:58Speaker 5: And it's a great throw, another great route. You really
- 56:01Speaker 5: should be able to complete this pass if you're playing
- 56:04Speaker 5: quarters the way they're doing it. I don't like the
- 56:07Speaker 5: way they did it, and I think the Seahawks took
- 56:08Speaker 5: advantage of that.
- 56:10Speaker 3: You know, something that I would say the untrained eye
- 56:13Speaker 3: won't appreciate is Arroyo. Because he can run this route
- 56:18Speaker 3: to be selfish and try to win.
- 56:20Speaker 4: And say, you know what?
- 56:21Speaker 3: I'm going to give the safety a move, go over
- 56:23Speaker 3: the top, and try to make a play.
- 56:25Speaker 4: And the safety obviously.
- 56:27Speaker 3: Has eyes on man, but he has eyes on quarterback too.
- 56:30Speaker 3: So what Arroyo has to do, you have to cross
- 56:32Speaker 3: the face of this safety. If you get selfish, you
- 56:34Speaker 3: go over the top, the safety might make a play
- 56:37Speaker 3: on this. So you combine... J.S.M. with his wide release
- 56:40Speaker 3: creating space and Arroyo crossing the face of the safety.
- 56:44Speaker 3: Guys doing what they're supposed to do. Arroyo knows he's
- 56:46Speaker 3: not getting his football. He knows he's not getting it.
- 56:49Speaker 3: I'm creating space for my guy. And you get the
- 56:51Speaker 3: best receiver in the game, the football. And I think
- 56:54Speaker 3: the throw isn't talked about enough because the window isn't big.
- 56:58Speaker 4: The DB's on J.S.M.
- 56:59Speaker 6: 's hip.
- 57:00Speaker 4: But he still finds a way to make it happen.
- 57:02Speaker 5: That's about a hundred mile an hour fastball too. Cause
- 57:05Speaker 5: that thing, he stepped into it. And normally Sam, when
- 57:08Speaker 5: he ball, it looks effortless. Not this one. I mean,
- 57:12Speaker 5: he threw it as hard as he could and he
- 57:15Speaker 5: needed to, cause the window wasn't open very long.
- 57:17Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 57:18Speaker 3: All right, this next play, Sam Darnold finds Cooper Cupp
- 57:20Speaker 3: for a seven-yard touchdown.
- 57:21Speaker 5: Wide receiver to each side.
- 57:23Speaker 2: Cooper Cupp now shifts over to the right side with
- 57:25Speaker 2: Price in the backfield.
- 57:26Speaker 5: Darnold takes the snap, looks, snaps off the throw. Easy.
- 57:30Speaker 3: Pitch and catch.
- 57:31Speaker 5: Touchdown Seahawks. Cooper Cupp just.
- 57:35Speaker 2: Ran a little out route to the front corner of the.
- 57:37Speaker 5: End zone, and the two defenders for Washington.
- 57:40Speaker 3: Just looked at each other, and.
- 57:42Speaker 2: Sam just snapped off a quick throw.
- 57:44Speaker 5: Touchdown Seahawks.
- 57:45Speaker 4: We're within three.
- 57:47Speaker 3: Maura, this is where the little details of a route combination,
- 57:51Speaker 3: I think, can get lost.
- 57:53Speaker 4: Because they're clearly in man.
- 57:54Speaker 3: And what we call this when I was growing up
- 57:56Speaker 3: was a banjo or a cali. It's like, all right,
- 58:00Speaker 3: I'm going to motion over from left to right if
- 58:02Speaker 3: I'm Cooper Cup.
- 58:03Speaker 4: And I feel like, you correct me if I'm wrong, DB, right?
- 58:06Speaker 3: In this situation, the corner on the outside is probably
- 58:10Speaker 3: supposed to switch to take the first thing out.
- 58:12Speaker 4: The corner inside takes the first thing in.
- 58:14Speaker 6: So.
- 58:14Speaker 3: Cooper Cup motions over to JSN, and his release, he
- 58:17Speaker 3: kind of gets a stack. So when you're stacked, there's
- 58:20Speaker 3: one receiver in front, one behind, and you're making the defense.
- 58:23Speaker 4: Have to communicate.
- 58:25Speaker 3: Because JSN is so dang good, no one wants to
- 58:28Speaker 3: leave number 11. So then Cooper Cup runs that out,
- 58:31Speaker 3: and the DB that's supposed to go with the first
- 58:33Speaker 3: thing out rides JSN to the end zone, and the
- 58:36Speaker 3: DB that motioned with Cooper Cup.
- 58:40Speaker 4: Is on JSN as well.
- 58:41Speaker 3: So this is where The details matter, and the respect
- 58:45Speaker 3: of JSN allowed Cooper Cupp to be wide open.
- 58:47Speaker 5: Yeah, I got to give Fleury a lot of credit.
- 58:49Speaker 5: I mean, he draws some good plays. I mean, they
- 58:52Speaker 5: knew they were going to have quarters, and that play
- 58:56Speaker 5: was obviously designed for JSN. On this one, it's a three-on-two.
- 59:00Speaker 5: I don't know what Washington's doing. I mean, they got
- 59:03Speaker 5: three guys covering one guy. Now one guy jumped the out.
- 59:07Speaker 5: There's some confusion to it. They kind of ran a
- 59:09Speaker 5: similar route on the backside, only they brought Jadarian Price
- 59:14Speaker 5: into the flat. And that one, there's, you know, Three
- 59:18Speaker 5: receivers end up going out because of that. But I
- 59:21Speaker 5: just think Fleury's done a really good job. You know,
- 59:23Speaker 5: when you are committed to stopping the run, we're going
- 59:26Speaker 5: to throw it. He's designed some incredible things. I mean,
- 59:29Speaker 5: think about it, guys. JSN's the most. Everybody knows where
- 59:34Speaker 5: he is on the field.
- 59:35Speaker 4: Yep.
- 59:35Speaker 5: And all this guy is averaging is about 10 catches
- 59:38Speaker 5: a game and over 100 yards. It's remarkable.
- 59:40Speaker 4: Hey, one more 100-yard game.
- 59:42Speaker 3: And he ties the franchise record for consecutive 100-yard games.
- 59:46Speaker 4: You know whose record he's trying to break?
- 59:47Speaker 5: I'm going to go with a guy named Steve Largent.
- 59:49Speaker 4: It's JSN.
- 59:51Speaker 5: No, it's not.
- 59:51Speaker 6: Yes, it is.
- 59:52Speaker 5: Steve Largent never had four?
- 59:54Speaker 4: I'm not saying he never had four.
- 59:56Speaker 6: No, he didn't.
- 59:56Speaker 4: Because JSN has.
- 59:57Speaker 6: The record, yeah.
- 59:58Speaker 5: It was more of a rhetorical statement or question on
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: that one.
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: You made me second-guess myself for a second, though. I
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: got to listen to the OG sometimes.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: JSN, going for it.
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: Hey, come join us here at Hawks Live at Bellevue
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: Square Center Court, where you'll have a chance to win
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: gift cards from the dining district at the Bellevue Collection. Tonight,
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: they're giving away gift cards to Thai Kitchen Bird Pepper.
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: Are they not the nicest people?
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: Cindy's the owner.
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: You want hospitality.
- 1:00:25Speaker 5: Oh, my goodness.
- 1:00:26Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: You go to Thai Chicken.
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: Their food, it's the best Thai I've ever had.
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: And Moyer knows the owner. So just mention Moyer's name.
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: And they'll make you pay full price. Mention his name,
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: you're paying full price.
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: They will give you literally zero off.
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: Special treat me there. But hospitality, on point.
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: All right, when we come back, it's time to talk
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: that talk.
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: We're going to pick some topics.
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: He says I'm right, I'll say he's wrong, vice versa.
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: That's coming up next right here on Hawks Live. This
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: is Hawks Live. I'm Michael Bumpus with Paul Moyer. Every Thursday,
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: we are right here at Bellevue Square Center Court in
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: front of the greatest fans in all of the land.
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: Now it's time to talk that talk. This is what's
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: going to happen. I'm going to throw something out there.
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: Paul will say it's correct.
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: It is wrong.
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: I'll give my opinion. Either we agree, we disagree. We've
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: been doing this for a long time.
- 1:01:18Speaker 6: So, uh.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: How long?
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: Let's see how this... Seven?
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: You don't know.
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: You don't know our anniversary, do you?
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: Do you know my birthday?
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: I've been so happy that the years just fly by.
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: You were up late, like 3.30, worrying about me.
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: Yes, worrying about you, exactly. All right, man, let's go
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: with this first one.
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: All right, Jackson Smith and Jigba is the most irreplaceable Seahawk.
- 1:01:44Speaker 5: Yes. And normally you would say quarterback, wouldn't you? Yeah.
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: But we don't have another JSM. Drew Locke showed that
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: We can win games, and look, I think Sam Darnold
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: is elite, elite, elite. But JSN, what he is able
- 1:02:01Speaker 5: to do in that passing game. Now, with that being said,
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: you remember when DK Metcalf got hurt?
- 1:02:09Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:02:09Speaker 5: And all of a sudden, JSN got an opportunity. We
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: thought he was just a possession receiver.
- 1:02:13Speaker 7: Yep.
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: Well, how wrong have we been there? Maybe someone else
- 1:02:16Speaker 5: like Torrey Horton or Rasheed or another, you know, Arroyo, somebody...
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: gets that opportunity and blossoms. But right now, if you
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: don't have JSN, that would be the most detrimental piece
- 1:02:30Speaker 5: to our team.
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: You said usually it's the quarterback. Drew Locke came in.
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: JSN goes for a buck 20, a buck 55.
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: Sam Darnold comes in.
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: He goes for a buck 28 and two touchdowns. He
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: scored every touchdown but, what, two for this team so far, right?
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: He got Sobert with a touchdown.
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: And then I believe you have Emmanuel Wilson with a touchdown.
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: We got one, and Barner has one, but 6-3. I mean,
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: he's scoring all your touchdowns. He's one of, like, one
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: or two players to score the first four touchdowns in
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: franchise history, maybe league history, in the first two games
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: of the year.
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: Yeah, it's JSN.
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: This offense does not go without JSN, and typically we're
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: talking quarterback or running back, you know what I'm saying,
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: something that is more consistent and touches the ball at
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: a high clip, but no, I agree.
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: It has to be JSN. No one in the league.
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: is doing what jsn is doing he's on pace for
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: 10 000 yards this year moyer i don't know.
- 1:03:28Speaker 5: If you knew that's a lot that's that's more than
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: i can count but uh now he's i remember when
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: we drafted him i go.
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: You're a little skeptical i say yeah he's all.
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: Right he had the big game in the rose bowl
- 1:03:41Speaker 5: yeah the year before because he was out the the
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: his basically senior year um i thought yeah he's all
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: right man it's just one game Man, was I wrong.
- 1:03:52Speaker 5: And I'm not wrong often, but boy, was I wrong
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: on that one. Let's stay with wide receivers because we're
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: not getting much other than JSN. You know, I still
- 1:04:00Speaker 5: think Arroyo is going to be there. I like Shahid.
- 1:04:04Speaker 5: It's just, you know, for whatever reason, it hasn't really
- 1:04:08Speaker 5: taken off yet. He's still such a deep threat that,
- 1:04:11Speaker 5: you know, people keep their eye on him. Torrey Horton's
- 1:04:14Speaker 5: the guy. And I think we both thought coming into
- 1:04:16Speaker 5: the season, you know, if he can– be healthy and
- 1:04:20Speaker 5: on the field, he has all the ability to be
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: a legit number two receiver on this team. So with
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: that being said, Torrey Horton will have more production than
- 1:04:30Speaker 5: Rasheed by the end of this season.
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: Had a big game last week. Big game last week,
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: Torrey Horton.
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: The thing about Torrey is he has to stay healthy,
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: and that's something he can't.
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: Control, right? Health is just his luck.
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: If he's healthy, I think he's a better overall receiver
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: than Shaheed. I think he becomes the number two, and
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: I know people don't want to hear that because Shahid
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: just got his bag, but it is what it is.
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: I think Shahid will be more valuable in the return game,
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: and every now and then he'll make one big play
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: or two big plays in a game. Torres, Torrey Horton,
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: I feel like, can give you four for 75, have
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: a big game, give you six for 100 in a touchdown.
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: He had one of the more efficient seasons last year.
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: Only played in, what, four or five games and had
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: five or six touchdowns, one of the return game. Five
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: touchdowns on 13 receptions is what my guy had.
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: I think people forgot that.
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:05:26Speaker 5: Look, he's sized. He's got length. He's got speed. He's
- 1:05:31Speaker 5: got good hands. He runs good routes. I think Shahid
- 1:05:35Speaker 5: becomes more productive if Torrey Horton becomes the true number
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: two because Shahid's– He's not a receiver. He's a fly-sweep guy.
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: He certainly can split a seam and run the post.
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: He can do a lot of things rather than just
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: run intermittent routes, right? So you've got to have Torrey
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: Horton or somebody step up into that position. For us
- 1:06:01Speaker 5: to really be the offense, I think we need to
- 1:06:04Speaker 5: be truly balanced. I think Torrey Horton... has to be
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: the legit number two receiver. And because I think we're
- 1:06:12Speaker 5: going back to the Super Bowl, I'm going to say
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: he's more productive than Shaheed.
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: All right, we agree once again. All right, next up. Ooh, freestyle.
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: Let's get it.
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: Justin Herbert is the most overrated QB in the world.
- 1:06:26Speaker 5: There's a lot of them out there. Drake May is
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: one of the most overrated quarterbacks in the NFL. Herbert,
- 1:06:36Speaker 5: I don't want to say he's overrated. I think, cause
- 1:06:40Speaker 5: I don't know how much, I think people think of
- 1:06:43Speaker 5: him as, wow, the upside's huge with him. You know,
- 1:06:46Speaker 5: there's so much about him. It's his charisma as well.
- 1:06:49Speaker 5: I think it could be his girlfriend's bringing him down.
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: I'm not sure. Cause ever since that's happened, he's lost
- 1:06:54Speaker 5: focus and he hasn't been the same and that can happen.
- 1:06:57Speaker 5: Sometimes a woman could just, they can mess with your head,
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: especially at that age. Um, Don't be mad, ladies. Don't
- 1:07:05Speaker 5: be mad. No, it's a compliment to you. You guys,
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: you control us. We know that, okay? We don't claim
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: anything else. And it's a good thing. You guys make
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: us better men. But he's going through a little bit
- 1:07:15Speaker 5: of transition right now, and it's affected his game. And
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: hopefully it affects it for one more week because I
- 1:07:22Speaker 5: think he's actually very skilled. You know, he's mobile for
- 1:07:25Speaker 5: a big guy. He does have a good arm. His
- 1:07:28Speaker 5: accuracy has been off. I don't know how many people
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: he has to throw to right now. They're really struggling offensively.
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: I mean, they are struggling. I don't know if it's
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: because their offensive coordinator is just throwing so much out there.
- 1:07:39Speaker 5: What do you hang your hat on? I don't know.
- 1:07:42Speaker 5: But I'm going to say no, he's not the most overrated.
- 1:07:45Speaker 5: But he's maybe one of the most disappointing ones because
- 1:07:49Speaker 5: of his upside.
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: Seven years in the league. No playoff wins.
- 1:07:55Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: Up 23-0 against the Jags, I think, a couple years
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: ago in the playoffs.
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: Loses that. Don't worry, we'll get you a new head coach.
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: We got you a new head coach.
- 1:08:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: Not good. Hey, it's the coordinator. We'll get you there.
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: New coordinator.
- 1:08:08Speaker 6: Nothing there.
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: Seven years, Moyer.
- 1:08:10Speaker 7: Wow.
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: He is the most overrated quarterback in the league.
- 1:08:13Speaker 5: Disappointing, for sure.
- 1:08:15Speaker 6: Overrated.
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: Who do people talk about the way that people talk
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: about Justin Herbert?
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: With no.
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: Playoff wins.
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: Well, I think Trevor Lawrence was in there. I think.
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: I mean, he's like four years in, though.
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: So somebody that with that many... I mean, I could throw...
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: Even though he's got the numbers, I could throw Dak
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: Prescott in there.
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: He got two playoff wins. Well, I mean, two in what?
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: Ten years?
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: Yeah, ten.
- 1:08:39Speaker 5: You know, I mean... I don't know. I think that's...
- 1:08:42Speaker 5: The reason why I say no, it's not a clear-cut
- 1:08:45Speaker 5: one to me, because there's been so many... of them
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: that are disappointing. Look, we saw the list where they
- 1:08:52Speaker 5: had franchise quarterback.
- 1:08:53Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: Drew, Drake May. Drake May was put in that list.
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: What are we doing?
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: MVP runner-up.
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: But I'm just, we knew better.
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: I'm just playing the devil's advocate. I'm with you. But,
- 1:09:08Speaker 4: you know, I just want to stimulate your mind.
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: I don't know. Something about Justin I kind of like.
- 1:09:15Speaker 5: I like him, too. Maybe it's just I like him
- 1:09:16Speaker 5: as a person.
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: I met him. I played golf with him. Great guy.
- 1:09:20Speaker 5: Good looking guy.
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: Hit the ball a mile.
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: Did he?
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: Yeah. About 370.
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09:26Speaker 6: Easy.
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: Smooth swing. Nothing like yours.
- 1:09:29Speaker 5: 10 yards behind you. Did you say, hey, did you
- 1:09:33Speaker 5: see that Costco they're building out there? And he said,
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: really nice. Yeah, it's about the distance between your ball
- 1:09:39Speaker 5: and my ball is the length of that. Did you
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: throw that on him?
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: I didn't. I wouldn't dare. I wouldn't dare him. He
- 1:09:47Speaker 4: can't chip or putt, though.
- 1:09:48Speaker 5: Let's give some love to our Thai kitchen.
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: Thai kitchen.
- 1:09:51Speaker 5: Thai bird. What's the last part?
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: Listen, don't get in my head right now. Okay. Hey,
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: make sure you get out to Bellevue Collection Dining. There's
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: so many great restaurants to choose from today. We had
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: our pregame meal from Thai Kitchen Bird Pepper.
- 1:10:06Speaker 6: Bingo.
- 1:10:06Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: Let's go. That's hard for your boy.
- 1:10:09Speaker 5: You guys need to go.
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: It's hard for your boy.
- 1:10:11Speaker 5: Really good.
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: You'll love it. We had everything. They said, hey, Moyer
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: walked in and said, Just feed us. You guys hook
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: us up.
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: You choose. You know better than we do, and they
- 1:10:20Speaker 5: weren't wrong.
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: Hey, heads up. Are we done?
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: The Browns are about to go 3-1 and control the
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: North right now.
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: How crazy is that?
- 1:10:28Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: When we come back, show recap, final thoughts.
- 1:10:30Speaker 4: That's coming up next right here on Hawks Live.
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: Along with Paul Moyer, I'm Michael Bump. His last segment
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: of the night. Thanks for hanging out with us tonight. Man,
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: the Browns are 3-1.
- 1:10:43Speaker 5: You know, I mean, they beat Carolina at home. I
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: thought Carolina was a little better. I mean, you got
- 1:10:54Speaker 5: destroyed by Jacksonville. You beat Pittsburgh, Carolina.
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: Who's the other one?
- 1:11:02Speaker 5: The other one, they weren't any good. I don't remember.
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: Hey, wins are wins.
- 1:11:06Speaker 5: No, look, you're 3-1 with a quarterback nobody wanted to
- 1:11:10Speaker 5: be quarterback. But, yeah, good for them. Cleveland needs a win, man.
- 1:11:15Speaker 5: They just, you know, it's just that they need, that
- 1:11:18Speaker 5: organization's been so bad.
- 1:11:20Speaker 6: So bad.
- 1:11:21Speaker 5: That, you know, it's nice to actually see them kind
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: of win. But we got our own problems.
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: Well, how do we win this weekend?
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: I think that it's going to come down to just
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: taking care of the dang football. You can say that
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: any game, any football game, right? You take care of
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: the football, you should be good. I want to say
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: that the Chargers lost the turnover battle last week against
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: the Bills. but still won that game, and that is
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: extremely rare. But take care of the football, and I
- 1:11:49Speaker 3: think this team should be fine.
- 1:11:51Speaker 5: The Bills had five turnovers in one.
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: Five fumbles.
- 1:11:54Speaker 5: In one.
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: That's remarkable in itself. I'll go to Coach McDonald. It's
- 1:12:00Speaker 5: not about them. It's about us. It's what we do.
- 1:12:02Speaker 5: I said against the commanders, or the Washington commanders, I said, look,
- 1:12:07Speaker 5: they're dangerous. They're 0-2. This team's 0-3. They're dangerous. They're
- 1:12:11Speaker 5: supposed to be a playoff team. They do have a
- 1:12:13Speaker 5: talented quarterback that has been a disappointment. He's completing under 60%
- 1:12:19Speaker 5: of his pass. They have a first-round draft pick running
- 1:12:22Speaker 5: back from last year there. He's capable. He's a quick
- 1:12:26Speaker 5: little guy, not real big, but he's quick. Their offensive
- 1:12:29Speaker 5: line's been a problem. I think their starting tight end
- 1:12:32Speaker 5: is out as well. If we get Julian Love back,
- 1:12:36Speaker 5: I feel a whole lot better, and I feel not
- 1:12:39Speaker 5: the doctor, but he said, hey, I'm playing, so hopefully
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: he's playing. It's just go out and play, you know,
- 1:12:46Speaker 5: play clean football. We're a very tough, physical, hard team
- 1:12:50Speaker 5: to beat if we don't give it to them. And
- 1:12:53Speaker 5: last week, we just flat out said, here you go.
- 1:12:56Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:12:57Speaker 5: You have a chance to beat us, and they end
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: up beating us.
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I like that. I mean, it's about you, right?
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: Quarterback play, defense. What I'm looking forward to is that
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: offensive line. I felt like the D-line was able to
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: get into the backfield and force the running back to
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: make a move as soon as he got the football.
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: wasn't really able to get downhill. Then I'm looking at
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: the right guard. Who are they going to start? Is
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: it going to be a rotation thing? Is Bo Stevens
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: going to be the guy? Is Haynes going to be
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: the guy?
- 1:13:25Speaker 5: I think Haynes has played really well. He's got quick feet.
- 1:13:29Speaker 5: He's not the biggest guy in the world. Bo is,
- 1:13:32Speaker 5: in the running game, I feel like he gets a
- 1:13:34Speaker 5: little bit lower. He can get a little more push.
- 1:13:38Speaker 5: But I've been watching. I can't say I've watched every
- 1:13:40Speaker 5: one of his plays, but I go, He does a
- 1:13:43Speaker 5: pretty good job in pass protection. So I'm actually good
- 1:13:47Speaker 5: with either one of them. I think at some point
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: you've got to maybe figure it out. But if you
- 1:13:51Speaker 5: feel like, hey, I can put a different guy in
- 1:13:53Speaker 5: and we'll maybe call a few more different plays, not
- 1:13:56Speaker 5: enough where the defense says, oh, you're throwing it now, oh,
- 1:13:59Speaker 5: you're running it, I'm okay with that. I think they
- 1:14:02Speaker 5: believe Bo Stevens is going to be a guy for them,
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: so he's going to get some playing time and some
- 1:14:07Speaker 5: reps because of that. But I've been pleased with Haynes.
- 1:14:12Speaker 5: And we'll find out Sunday what Big Ray has to say.
- 1:14:16Speaker 5: But from what I've seen, I've liked him.
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I like Haynes. Obviously, Bo Stevens has some youth
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: to him. I like A.J. Barter getting involved last week.
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: I think you should continue to do that. But I'm
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: with you.
- 1:14:27Speaker 4: J-Love, there's nothing like having him back there. I think A.J.
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: Finley didn't do bad. I don't think Rodney Thomas has
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: done a bad job either.
- 1:14:33Speaker 5: No, I think Rodney's played well. I mean, it's funny
- 1:14:35Speaker 5: because he was the veteran guy, and he has. He's
- 1:14:38Speaker 5: actually been a starter, and he's been productive. So that
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: was a really good signing for us. as well. A.J.
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: got in there and just, it was one of those,
- 1:14:45Speaker 5: there was just a bunch, they're going to go after
- 1:14:48Speaker 5: a backup. And they did. But it wasn't like he
- 1:14:51Speaker 5: wasn't on coverage and he was busting all over. But
- 1:14:53Speaker 5: they were just really good routes and I did, I
- 1:14:55Speaker 5: thought the corners didn't give enough help and I didn't
- 1:14:57Speaker 5: think we were jamming the slot. And those are really
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: tough routes to cover and cover to those corner routes
- 1:15:03Speaker 5: if you're in safety. It basically becomes one-on-one downfield. That's
- 1:15:06Speaker 5: a bit of a mismatch. But he was there. They
- 1:15:09Speaker 5: just made plays on him.
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: All right, that's going to do it for us.
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: Special thanks to Emmanuel Wilson, Julian Neal for joining the show.
