Speaker 1: Let us pray. Pray thee, sit and eat of my venison,
• 0:05
Speaker 1: that thy soul may bless me. Genesis 27.19 Dear Heavenly Father,
• 0:12
Speaker 1: today I am choosing to break generational cycles that no
• 0:16
Speaker 1: longer serve my purpose or my destiny. I do not
• 0:21
Speaker 1: use deception to try to protect myself at the risk
• 0:24
Speaker 1: of my loved ones, like Isaac and like his father
• 0:28
Speaker 1: before him, Abraham. I declare that integrity and uprightness of
• 0:34
Speaker 1: heart will be my guiding compass. I decree and declare
• 0:38
Speaker 1: that as I move with integrity, you will multiply my
• 0:43
Speaker 1: life and shower me with your blessing. I confess that
• 0:49
Speaker 1: I don't have to use manipulation and trickery as Jacob
• 0:52
Speaker 1: did to get what you have for me. Rather, I
• 0:56
Speaker 1: will stay in my lane and keep my eyes toward
• 1:00
Speaker 1: you and your word, because what you have for me
• 1:04
Speaker 1: is mine, and no one can take what's mine out
• 1:08
Speaker 1: of your hand, Lord. In my life, when others seek
• 1:12
Speaker 1: to hinder my blessings, I don't have to panic or worry,
• 1:16
Speaker 1: because you will continually protect and cover all that I have.
• 1:22
Speaker 1: Thank you, Jesus, that because you bless me, I am
• 1:27
Speaker 1: blessed indeed. In Jesus' name, Amen. Thank you for praying
• 1:35
Speaker 1: with me today. Continue listening for an incredible Bible story

Speaker 2: Jacob and Esau. Before this story, we learn of Abraham's death.
• 1:55
Speaker 2: The father of nations went to be with his Lord.
• 1:59
Speaker 2: He was buried by Isaac and Ishmael beside his wife Sarah.
• 2:04
Speaker 2: Isaac and Rebekah had twins named Jacob and Esau. The two,
• 2:09
Speaker 2: even from the womb, warred against one another. Esau, the
• 2:13
Speaker 2: older twin, was tricked by his younger brother and sold
• 2:17
Speaker 2: his birthright. Now, we will learn about Rebekah and Jacob
• 2:21
Speaker 2: tricking Isaac into giving Jacob his blessing, inspired by the
• 2:25
  Speaker 2: book of Genesis.

Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible
• 2:32
Speaker 3: in a Year podcast. Today we begin with a famine
• 2:36
Speaker 3: that takes Isaac and his family to another land, and here,
• 2:39
Speaker 3: just as his father did, Isaac tells a lie about
• 2:42
Speaker 3: his wife to protect himself. Fear has once again ruled
• 2:46
Speaker 3: in the heart of one of God's chosen people. History
• 2:50
Speaker 3: is repeating itself in a new generation. You'll once again
• 2:54
Speaker 3: hear how despite a lack of faithfulness on their part,
• 2:57
Speaker 3: God continues to bless and protect Abraham's family, now through
• 3:02
Speaker 3: his son, Isaac. Listen to how Isaac prospered in this
• 3:06
Speaker 3: new land and how he was met with disdain and
• 3:09
Speaker 3: distrust by others who resented him for the blessings he
• 3:12
Speaker 3: was reaping, blessings God was giving him. You will also
• 3:16
Speaker 3: hear how Isaac followed the model of his own father,
• 3:19
Speaker 3: created remembrances of God's faithfulness and monuments to the God
• 3:24
Speaker 3: who provides. And in this passage, will return to Jacob
• 3:28
Speaker 3: and Esau and the conflict that began to brew in
• 3:31
Speaker 3: yesterday's story. You'll hear of hidden intentions, heartbreak, and hatred.
• 3:37
Speaker 3: Watch how Jacob's craftiness and cleverness and deception finally strike
• 3:41
Speaker 3: a blow to both Esau and Isaac that will forever
• 3:45
Speaker 3: alter the course of this family and history. In today's passage,
• 3:51
Speaker 3: he is not acting alone, but is teaming with Rebekah,
• 3:53
Speaker 3: his mother, who favors him over Esau. Together, they will
• 3:58
Speaker 3: trick Isaac into giving Jacob what is meant for his
• 4:01
Speaker 3: older brother. The family conflict will come into an explosive
• 4:05
Speaker 3: climax and you'll hear echoes of two brothers we've heard
• 4:08
Speaker 3: of long ago. One accepted and the other rejected. Will
• 4:12
Speaker 3: all be lost? Is there any way for this family
• 4:15
Speaker 3: to heal? These are the questions you'll be left with
• 4:18
Speaker 3: as you listen to today's passage. So, let's hear the
• 4:22
  Speaker 3: story now.
• 4:24
Speaker 2: There was a great famine that plagued the land. The land,
• 4:28
Speaker 2: once adorned with fertile fields, ceased its growth. The land
• 4:32
Speaker 2: would soon return to its former glory, yet for the
• 4:35
Speaker 2: time being, Isaac needed to escape to healthier plains. They
• 4:40
Speaker 2: escaped to Girar, a hostile land in which Isaac had
• 4:44
Speaker 2: never ventured before. When his family settled there, the men
• 4:48
Speaker 2: in the city were asking about his wife Rebecca, for
• 4:51
Speaker 2: she was pleasing to the eye. Isaac, out of fear
• 4:55
Speaker 2: that they might kill him to take his wife, claimed
• 4:58
Speaker 2: she was his sister, as his father Abraham had done
• 5:01
Speaker 2: before him. And Adam did generations before him. Isaac compromised
• 5:07
Speaker 2: the integrity of his wife to protect himself. Yet it
• 5:11
Speaker 2: did not take long for Isaac to get found out,
• 5:14
Speaker 2: and a great distress was put upon their leader, Abimelech.
• 5:18
Speaker 2: Once again, the family of Abraham had underestimated the integrity
• 5:22
Speaker 2: of foreigners and and it created strife amongst them. And
• 5:27
Speaker 2: yet Isaac worked the ground well. The Lord had instructed
• 5:31
Speaker 2: Isaac to remain in Gerar instead of fleeing to Egypt,
• 5:35
Speaker 2: and he was fruitful for it. Isaac grew richer during
• 5:38
Speaker 2: the famine, and his influence reached far beyond the land
• 5:42
Speaker 2: of Gerar. The Philistines who dwelled in the land grew
• 5:46
Speaker 2: envious of him, and Isaac became villainized for his success.
• 5:51
Speaker 2: Abimelech sent him away, for they did not want him
• 5:54
Speaker 2: growing even more rich off of their land. Isaac and
• 5:58
Speaker 2: his family wandered for many weeks, and they were met
• 6:01
Speaker 2: everywhere they went with disdain and conflict. Yet God remained
• 6:06
Speaker 2: faithful and reminded Isaac of his promise to him. God
• 6:10
Speaker 2: blessed him, saying, I am the God of Abraham your father.
• 6:15
Speaker 2: Fear not, for I am with you and will bless
• 6:18
Speaker 2: you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake.
• 6:22
Speaker 2: and Isaac dug wells as a monument to God's faithfulness.
• 6:26
Speaker 2: During this time, Esau had married a Hittite woman named Judith.
• 6:31
Speaker 2: The two of them made Rebekah and Jacob's life miserable
• 6:35
Speaker 2: and openly mocked them both. Isaac grew old, and his
• 6:41
Speaker 2: eyes began to fade. He could no longer open his
• 6:44
Speaker 2: eyes to see the fruit of his labor or the
• 6:46
Speaker 2: ones he loved. Isaac, knowing that his time was drawing near,
• 6:50
Speaker 2: called to his oldest son Esau. My son, he said.
• 6:56
Speaker 2: Here I am, Esau replied. Go into the countryside with
• 7:01
Speaker 2: your bow and hunt me an animal. Prepare me a
• 7:04
Speaker 2: meal and you and I will sit together to eat. Afterwards,
• 7:09
Speaker 2: I will bless you before I depart. Esau left immediately
• 7:14
Speaker 2: to hunt for his father, anticipating the blessing that would
• 7:17
Speaker 2: come afterwards. Rebecca overheard Isaac and Esau and immediately grabbed
• 7:23
Speaker 2: her son Jacob. Rebecca told Jacob what Isaac was planning
• 7:27
Speaker 2: on doing and together they devised a plan to steal
• 7:31
Speaker 2: away Esau's blessing. Jacob killed a goat and made his
• 7:35
Speaker 2: father a delicious stew. Rebecca then dressed Jacob in Esau's clothes.
• 7:42
Speaker 2: Since Esau was a hairy man, Jacob covered himself in
• 7:45
Speaker 2: goat fur. With Esau's clothes, fur, and stew Jacob entered
• 7:50
Speaker 2: into his father's tent, determined to come out with a blessing.
• 7:55
Speaker 2: Slowly entering into the tent, Jacob lowered his voice and spoke,
• 8:00
Speaker 2: Here I am, Father. Isaac, blind, looked towards Jacob and said,
• 8:07
Speaker 2: Who is here? It is Esau, your firstborn. I have
• 8:12
Speaker 2: done what you asked. Please, get up and eat so
• 8:15
Speaker 2: that you may bless me. Isaac, perplexed, inquired how Esau
• 8:21
Speaker 2: was able to kill the animal so quickly. The Lord
• 8:25
Speaker 2: guided my hand and gave me success. Jacob lied. Come
• 8:30
Speaker 2: here so I can touch you, son. I must know
• 8:32
Speaker 2: if you are truly Esau. Jacob drew near to Isaac
• 8:36
Speaker 2: and allowed him to feel his arms and clothes. The
• 8:40
Speaker 2: trick had worked. Isaac was convinced he was speaking to Esau.
• 8:46
Speaker 2: The two ate together. And Isaac placed his hands on Jacob.
• 8:50
Speaker 2: With love and excitement, Isaac spoke over Jacob with the
• 8:54
Speaker 2: same adoration he would have given Esau. The tender and
• 8:58
Speaker 2: intimate moment between father and firstborn son was stolen by Jacob.
• 9:04
Speaker 2: Isaac spoke his blessing over Jacob, reciting a type of
• 9:08
Speaker 2: ancient poetry, one that would echo throughout all of Jacob's life. See,
• 9:14
Speaker 2: the smell of my son is as the smell of
• 9:16
Speaker 2: a field that the God has blessed. May God give
• 9:19
Speaker 2: you of the dew of heaven, the sustenance of the
• 9:22
Speaker 2: earth and plenty of grain and wine. Let all people
• 9:26
Speaker 2: serve you and nations bow down to you. Be king
• 9:30
Speaker 2: over your brothers and may they bow down to you.
• 9:34
Speaker 2: Cursed be everyone who curses you and blessed be everyone
• 9:39
Speaker 2: who blesses you. As Isaac was finishing his blessing over Jacob,
• 9:44
Speaker 2: Esau returned from his hunt. Esau tirelessly worked as he
• 9:49
Speaker 2: skinned the deer, butchered it, and prepared his father's favorite meal.
• 9:54
Speaker 2: Blessing was in reach, and he hurried to his father's
• 9:57
Speaker 2: tent with a meal. Jacob had left Ishmael. Isaac's side,
• 10:00
Speaker 2: and Esau approached him. Father, I have come back from
• 10:05
Speaker 2: my hunt. Here, take and eat, so that you may
• 10:08
Speaker 2: bless me. Who are you? he answered crossly. I am
• 10:13
Speaker 2: your firstborn son, Esau. I have come back from my hunt.
• 10:18
Speaker 2: Isaac trembled and became violent. In a rage, Isaac raised
• 10:21
Speaker 2: his voice, saying, Who was it then that brought me food?
• 10:26
Speaker 2: I have blessed him, and he will be blessed. As
• 10:29
Speaker 2: soon as Esau heard this, he bellowed a deep and
• 10:33
Speaker 2: bitter cry. Sorrow, rage, and anguish welled up in Esau's heart.
• 10:39
Speaker 2: His brother had tricked him into giving up his birthright,
• 10:42
Speaker 2: and now he had stolen what mattered most, his father's blessing. Frantically,
• 10:48
Speaker 2: And with tears filling his eyes, Esau begged his father,
• 10:53
Speaker 2: Bless me also, my father. Have you not reserved any
• 10:57
Speaker 2: blessing for me? Please do not leave me here alone.
• 11:02
Speaker 2: Isaac was enraged at Jacob, yet could not recant his
• 11:05
Speaker 2: blessing over him. I have made him lord over you,
• 11:10
Speaker 2: Isaac said. I have blessed him as an inheritor of
• 11:14
Speaker 2: all God has given me, and you will serve under
• 11:18
Speaker 2: him Esau wept bitterly. His face fell into his hands
• 11:23
Speaker 2: as he managed to ask, Is there any blessing you
• 11:27
Speaker 2: can give me? Anything at all? Isaac spoke again in
• 11:33
Speaker 2: ancient poetry. Welling up with sadness for his son, he
• 11:37
Speaker 2: spoke saying, Behold, away from the richness of the earth
• 11:42
Speaker 2: you shall dwell, and away from the dew of heaven
• 11:45
Speaker 2: on high, You shall live by your sword, and you
• 11:48
Speaker 2: shall serve your brother. But when you grow restless, you
• 11:53
Speaker 2: shall break his yoke from your neck. A dark part
• 11:57
Speaker 2: of Esau's heart was awakened that day. Thousands of generations
• 12:02
Speaker 2: had passed since Cain had killed his brother Abel, yet
• 12:05
Speaker 2: that same hatred lingered, seeking whom it may take hold of.
• 12:10
Speaker 2: When Isaac had breathed his last, and went to be
• 12:13
Speaker 2: with his father Abraham, Esau sighed a deep breath and
• 12:17
Speaker 2: said the days of mourning my father are approaching after
• 12:22
Speaker 2: I mourn I will kill my brother Jacob Esau spoke
• 12:28
Speaker 2: these words to himself yet they caught the ear of
• 12:31
Speaker 2: his mother Rebekah she sent for Jacob and said to
• 12:34
Speaker 2: him your brother plans to kill you after he has
• 12:37
Speaker 2: mourned your father gather your things and flee to my
• 12:41
Speaker 2: brother Laban he will take care of you until your
• 12:43
Speaker 2: brother's fury subsides So Jacob fled in the dead of
• 12:47
Speaker 2: night and waited there until his brother's anger dimmed and
• 12:52
Speaker 2: he could return to claim what was now rightfully his.
• 12:58
Speaker 3: As we begin today's passage, there is a famine sweeping
• 13:01
Speaker 3: across the land. Isaac and his family are unable to
• 13:04
Speaker 3: stay where they are and the Lord speaks to Isaac
• 13:07
Speaker 3: to tell him where not to go and where he
• 13:10
Speaker 3: should settle. This was not a case of Isaac fleeing
• 13:13
Speaker 3: in fear and not trusting God. He was following God's
• 13:16
Speaker 3: direction and taking his family to a better place for
• 13:20
Speaker 3: a season. Sadly, his trust only went so far because
• 13:24
Speaker 3: just like his father Abraham on two separate occasions, Isaac
• 13:28
Speaker 3: feared for his life in a land of pagans and
• 13:31
Speaker 3: he told people that Rebecca was his sister. Rather than
• 13:35
Speaker 3: being the leader and protector she needed, Isaac thought of
• 13:38
Speaker 3: his own safety more highly than that of his wife's.
• 13:42
Speaker 3: And just like his father, his lies found out by
• 13:44
Speaker 3: the king, Isaac discovers that he has underestimated the righteousness
• 13:49
Speaker 3: of those around him, but worse, he failed to trust God. Nevertheless,
• 13:55
Speaker 3: God blesses Isaac in his planting efforts, and Isaac bears
• 13:59
Speaker 3: much fruit from this land. Eventually, this does not sit
• 14:03
Speaker 3: well with the locals, who become envious of him. Soon,
• 14:07
Speaker 3: Isaac and his family are forced to leave and wander.
• 14:10
Speaker 3: meeting opposition and conflict at every turn. But once again,
• 14:14
Speaker 3: we see God remaining faithful to his promise. He protects
• 14:18
Speaker 3: and blesses Isaac and his family and provides for them. Isaac,
• 14:23
Speaker 3: following the good example of his father this time, digs
• 14:26
Speaker 3: wells as a form of remembering God's faithfulness. There is
• 14:31
Speaker 3: a great importance in setting up ways of remembering what
• 14:35
Speaker 3: God has done. You may not build an altar or
• 14:38
Speaker 3: dig a well or erect a monument, but you can
• 14:41
Speaker 3: still do things that help you remember what God has
• 14:44
Speaker 3: done in your life and your family. The next thing
• 14:47
Speaker 3: we find in our story is Esau, who has grown bitter.
• 14:51
Speaker 3: Likely as a result of giving up his birthright, he
• 14:55
Speaker 3: is married and he and his wife show utter contempt
• 14:57
Speaker 3: for his parents. And yet, even as he grows old
• 15:01
Speaker 3: and blind, Isaac continues to choose Esau as his favorite.
• 15:05
Speaker 3: It is to him that Isaac intends to give his
• 15:07
Speaker 3: paternal blessing. But Jacob wants that blessing. It's worth noting
• 15:13
Speaker 3: that Jacob wasn't wrong to want the blessing. He was
• 15:16
Speaker 3: seeking God and his favor. The intention, the desire itself
• 15:21
Speaker 3: was not wrong. In fact, it was a good thing
• 15:23
Speaker 3: to want the blessing of God. The problem was how
• 15:27
Speaker 3: he went about getting it. Jacob, prompted by his mother, Rebecca,
• 15:31
Speaker 3: schemes with her to take this blessing away from his brother.
• 15:35
Speaker 3: They take advantage of Isaac's frailty and inattention and trick
• 15:40
Speaker 3: him into thinking Jacob is his older brother. This was
• 15:43
Speaker 3: no simple deception. They went to great lengths to ensure
• 15:47
Speaker 3: it was Jacob and not Esau who would get the blessing.
• 15:51
Speaker 3: So while Esau is out hunting to make a meal
• 15:53
Speaker 3: for his old and dying father, we see here in
• 15:56
Speaker 3: this passage a total severing of the family bond. The
• 16:00
Speaker 3: deceit and bitterness and jealousy and rivalry has reached maturity.
• 16:06
Speaker 3: Esau is consumed with anger and hatred towards his brother
• 16:09
Speaker 3: and vows to kill him, an echo of the first
• 16:11
Speaker 3: two brothers in history, Cain and Abel. Jacob, despite having
• 16:16
Speaker 3: received the blessing, is terrified and forced to run away
• 16:18
Speaker 3: to Rebekah's family where he will live for many years.
• 16:22
Speaker 3: There's so much to be learned in this story. Once again,
• 16:25
Speaker 3: we see the destructiveness of favoritism. But there's something even deeper.
• 16:30
Speaker 3: Rather than getting his house in order as his life
• 16:33
Speaker 3: neared to an end, Isaac was interested only in filling
• 16:37
Speaker 3: his stomach. Listen to the words of Genesis 27, 2, 3,
• 16:42
Speaker 3: and 4. Isaac said, Behold, now I am old, and
• 16:46
Speaker 3: I do not know the day of my death. Now then,
• 16:49
Speaker 3: please take your gear, your quiver, and your bow, and
• 16:51
Speaker 3: go out to the field and hunt game for me,
• 16:54
Speaker 3: and prepare a savory dish for me such as I love,
• 16:57
Speaker 3: and bring it to me that I may eat, so
• 16:59
Speaker 3: that my soul may bless you before I die. Isaac,
• 17:04
Speaker 3: knowing that he would soon die, could have brought his
• 17:06
Speaker 3: sons together along with his wife and charged them with
• 17:08
Speaker 3: maintaining unity and love and continuing trust in God. Instead,
• 17:13
Speaker 3: all he wanted was dinner. It would take years for
• 17:17
Speaker 3: this family conflict to resolve, and by then so much
• 17:21
Speaker 3: had been lost. While Abraham was a shining example of
• 17:25
Speaker 3: how to carefully order one's last days to ensure a
• 17:28
Speaker 3: legacy that honors God, Isaac's life shines as a light
• 17:32
Speaker 3: on the danger of selfishness and self-indulgence. May we seek
• 17:38
Speaker 3: to be more like Abraham and less like Isaac in
• 17:41
Speaker 3: our old age. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for this
• 17:45
Speaker 3: story and how you continue to show yourself faithful and
• 17:47
Speaker 3: true to Isaac, even as he stumbled and failed to
• 17:51
Speaker 3: trust in you. Thank you also for the valuable lesson
• 17:54
Speaker 3: about family and the warnings about dishonesty, favoritism, and being
• 17:59
Speaker 3: passive in our leadership with our children. Help us to
• 18:02
Speaker 3: honor you with our families. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank
