- 0:18SPEAKER_03: So whether you're a new player just starting out or a seasoned veteran looking to get a new perspective on things, Bards and Barrels has something for everyone.
- 0:25SPEAKER_03: So sit back, grab a drink, and join us as we roll for initiative and embark on an epic adventure.
- 0:34SPEAKER_03: And there's the opening crack for the last time this season.
- 0:38SPEAKER_03: How are we doing, fellas?
- 0:40SPEAKER_03: Woo! Is it really the last time this time?
- 0:42SPEAKER_03: Well, you know.
- 0:43SPEAKER_03: It may we may have to do a take three.
- 0:45SPEAKER_03: You never know.
- 0:46SPEAKER_03: I did hit record this time, so.
- 0:47SPEAKER_03: Hey! Woo! Cheers.
- 0:51SPEAKER_03: Oh man.
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: So it is the end of season two.
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: Um, what are just your general thoughts on how things went this year?
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: Are we coming back?
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: Well, I think we're coming back.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: That's the plan.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: We didn't get canceled, right?
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: No, yeah.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: Don't have to worry about that.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: You're fired.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: The beer police haven't found us yet.
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: No, thank God.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: That'd be awful.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: They don't they don't approve of our rankings.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: I don't think that's a problem.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: Sometimes I don't know if we approve of our rankings.
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 1:21SPEAKER_03: We don't we don't have that many followers.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: But speaking of beer, uh you know, we did what, 30-some odd episodes this year, uh, differing a little bit from season one, where we we pretty much post on a bi-weekly basis and we talked you know strictly about DD.
- 1:34SPEAKER_03: We did a lot of things for uh the beginner and intro type players.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: And then in season two, we really, really, really wanted to add something for that off week.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: And we decided that, you know, since we're drinking beers when we do this show anyway, it would be very fitting for us to talk about the beers or try different beers and talk about them.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: And so thus the opening crack was born.
- 1:55SPEAKER_03: Um so what do you what are your feelings about how the opening crack went this season?
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: So many tasty, tasty options.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: I mean, and we had to get the bar or the barrels in the bars and barrels name to make sense.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: So it fits.
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:12SPEAKER_03: And I think it was nice because like we you know, it was very different from our normal episodes that were like 30 to 45 minutes.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: These were only the opening cracks were only like 15 minutes-ish.
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: We still gave people a little bit of DD because we we played around with like pub names and beer names that you could take and throw into your own adventure and stuff like that.
- 2:30SPEAKER_03: So I thought it was just nice, well-rounded uh kind of thing, right?
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, if for nothing else, you could just listen through them and just write down all the beer names and tavern names, and then you wouldn't have to come up with the.
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: Exactly right.
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: You know, you can make up your own rollable tables with the names that we come up with and how many times uh those were in Baldur's Gate or L TRL flavor profiles for them, how strong they are.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, you're just set.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: That's absolutely right.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: The challenge rating involved.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they are like a beer review episode, but it's not just about beer.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: Like if you haven't listened to those, I highly recommend going and listening to some of them.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: They if you don't like beer, skip through the first little bit of it, and then you can jump into the where we get into a little bit more of the DD side of the beer.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: You know, if you didn't listen to any of the opening cracks, you probably never would have met Carl, right?
- 3:22SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's true.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: I forgot about Carl.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Oh I think Carl's only ever been on uh opening crack as far as Carl here.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Hey, hey guys, uh I'm still over here.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: I'm sitting in the back room.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: Hey Carl, how's it going?
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can't stay very long.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: I gotta get out of here.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Peace boys, see you in season three.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'm sure.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: Oh man, it's good to hear from Carl.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: Oh man, we had some really fun guests this season.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: Uh, we did, and I think uh that's a great segue because one of them is now a permanent piece of the opening cracks.
- 3:51SPEAKER_03: Uh, we asked uh a good friend of ours who is a master brewer and helps make us not sound like just this is beer.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: Uh, our friend Damon Jensen Heitman, who is the master brewer for steeplebrewing in Hastings, Nebraska, joined the opening crack, which has been great because he can actually talk about you know the styles of beer and he knows about them and like what they're supposed to be, and which it just adds a little depth to those episodes, which was great.
- 4:15SPEAKER_03: Um, and then also we had guests on the show too.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: So we had uh Sean Winningham, who, aka the crit hit the giant, who came on the show.
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: He's a big fan of the show.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: We're a big fan of his stuff too that he puts out on his social media channels.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: Um that was great because I mean it's a it's us getting out there and and making ourselves known to other content creators out there, and when it's also a little relieving to know people do listen to us and like our show.
- 4:41SPEAKER_03: So thank you, thank you, Sean.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: Thank you, thank you.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: It's all it was just fun to be able to hang out with somebody who is excited about DD to the level we are.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you could see the passion.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm excited to have him come back in future seasons as well because I think that there's a lot of synergy there too.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: We're excited about the game, we love the game, we want to get people to play the game, and Sean's in that realm too.
- 5:01SPEAKER_03: Yes, and he fits in with that 30-something dad vibe that we have going on here, kind of thing.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: So it's great.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: Uh, another thing that happened this season, guest related, was also that we've gone and been guests on other podcasts.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: Uh recently, I was on the Nerdlandia podcast, which is run by uh a former college mate of mine who has like content creators come on her show, and she's had like bands and artists and all kinds of things.
- 5:25SPEAKER_03: So it was a little weird when she asked me if I wanted to come on because it's like I don't consider myself to be an artist, but I certainly am a content creator, and we do come up with a lot of things that we have to be super creative about.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: So it was a lot of fun going on that show.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: She's an avid craft beer aficionado as well.
- 5:41SPEAKER_03: So we talked a little bit about beer, we talked about DD.
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: It was it was a great time.
- 5:44SPEAKER_03: So hopefully Emily can come on our show at some point.
- 5:47SPEAKER_03: Uh, but also, Phil, you were on a podcast as well.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, I was.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm not I don't believe the episode has dropped yet, but I was on the podcast Two Shrinks and Me with one of my buddies from initially that I met in Utah.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Um, and was had the opportunity to kind of talk about how playing Dungeons and Dragons can potentially like assist with improving your mental health and like different strategies that you can use while you're playing DD, and how some people use it as an escape, and how it can teach you social skills, and just some of those more I don't know, psychological aspects of playing the game.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: So it was an awesome opportunity.
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, nice.
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: Uh now we just need to get Brett on a podcast because he's the only one out there.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: So if you're listening and you want to have Brett come on your podcast, or you know, or if you want Phil and I to come, or all of us, just let us know.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: Reach out uh bardsandbarrels at gmail.com or messages anywhere.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: To have all three of us go on.
- 6:39SPEAKER_03: Oh man.
- 6:40SPEAKER_03: You better be ready for it to go off the rails if you do that.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: We we tend to do things like that.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: But that's that that would be a lot of fun.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: That'd be cool.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: Get ready for a lot of like editing out, a lot of bleeps.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: And hey, that's what makes us uh so personable, right?
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: The bleeps.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: If you ever want to know, go look up our review episodes.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: Oh god, yes.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: Uh so like it just really quick before we move on to kind of what our summer plans are.
- 7:04SPEAKER_03: You know, as you look through what we did throughout the year, like we kicked off the season with DMing, we kept going on our class reviews.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: Um someday we'll finish them.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, hopefully early season three, we'll get through those.
- 7:17SPEAKER_03: Um, we did some reviews of some like tangent DD 5e things.
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: We did a review of a completely different system with Mercborg.
- 7:27SPEAKER_03: Um, so it's been like we've done, we've covered a lot of ground this season.
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: Did we do a holiday episode in season one or was that new in season two as well?
- 7:34SPEAKER_03: It was new in season two as well, yes.
- 7:36SPEAKER_03: So I thought that was a lot of fun because like for the time, and we released that on Christmas Day, so it's like we kept it very lighthearted and just very different from the other episodes.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: It was kind of funny when we when we rolled everything into to YouTube when Google Podcast went away.
- 7:49SPEAKER_03: Like that was one of the first episodes that started getting views.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: I'm like, why?
- 7:53SPEAKER_03: Like that that particular show doesn't have a ton of substance to it, but it's just a fun one.
- 7:59SPEAKER_03: Like we just had fun recording that, but I'm like, I appreciate everybody that listened to that because that was it was it was interesting.
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: Let's let's go with that.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: You know, the other thing that we did was the uh we brought back the mailbag, which is uh always a little scary going into them, but uh those are a lot, always a lot of fun too.
- 8:17SPEAKER_03: I I think the mailbags are never going away.
- 8:19SPEAKER_03: I think we need to keep doing those for as long as we're doing this show, we need to keep doing mailbags.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: It's just a lot of fun.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: It's fun.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: Maybe you guys get to run one someday.
- 8:28SPEAKER_03: Not really.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: Um I I enjoy being on this side of the table and doing those.
- 8:33SPEAKER_03: You just want the answer.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: You put the questions beforehand.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: That's what it is.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: I do.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: I I I find them thoroughly enjoying as you're like reading off the questions, and we were just sitting here, like, where are we going?
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: The last mailbag episode we did, one of the questions got really long, and I'm like, okay, hold on a second.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: Like, what was the first half of the question?
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: I got nervous about it.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: Hey, at least I gave you a heads up before that episode.
- 8:55SPEAKER_03: Like, generally, what most of the questions were about.
- 8:57SPEAKER_03: Past mailbag episodes, I was just like, Good luck.
- 9:00SPEAKER_03: I've been like, Were you paying attention to that?
- 9:03SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't remember that.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: That's on you if you don't pay attention when I give you a little heads up on that.
- 9:08SPEAKER_03: Too many beers.
- 9:09SPEAKER_03: Uh, so anyway, I think I think season two is great.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: Uh, I think a lot of people uh enjoyed it.
- 9:15SPEAKER_03: It's where we really grew as content creators.
- 9:17SPEAKER_03: We did a lot of things.
- 9:18SPEAKER_03: It was also a little bit of a litmus test to see if we could crank out that much content because it was kind of an unknown.
- 9:24SPEAKER_03: We knew we could do bi-weekly.
- 9:26SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's only was only like 18 to 20 episodes, so we knew we could do that pretty easily.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: But doing like a full every week 37-episode block or however many it was, we weren't sure if we could do it, and we found out we could.
- 9:38SPEAKER_03: Um, I'm not sure that we'll ever expand much beyond that.
- 9:42SPEAKER_03: We have some ideas um look into the future for something called the bottom of the barrel, um, which we would probably only do quarterly, uh, where we're like it's just a time for us to talk about things that are influencing us as DD players and creators.
- 9:56SPEAKER_03: So that could be movies, music, things we're reading.
- 9:59SPEAKER_03: Um it's when we've hit the bottom of the barrel.
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: That that's kind of the point, and that's where you find like all the stuff that's left over that doesn't really fit into any of our episodes.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: And so we thought that would be kind of fun.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: I'm not sure how we're gonna do that.
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: We haven't really piloted that out yet.
- 10:14SPEAKER_03: Uh, so we'll see how that goes.
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: But otherwise, what you got in season two is gonna look very similar to that in terms of structure when we get to season three.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: We're gonna play in season three.
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: Are we gonna yes?
- 10:25SPEAKER_03: So, thank you, Phil.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: That's a perfect segue.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: So uh over the summer, so you're actually gonna get this before season three.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: Um, we have been playing Season 2.5.
- 10:36SPEAKER_03: Season 2.5, that's right.
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: Summer edition, summer class, schools out, road trip.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're gonna take you on a little bit of a it's likely gonna end up being a three-episode arc where we play through the Rick and Morty module that that Wizards of the Coast came out with.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: That should be a ton of fun.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: It's us coming back with Matt and Isaac, who have played through Light of Xeractus, who played Descent into Avernus with us.
- 11:01SPEAKER_03: Uh, and the first recording we did of this was a flippin' blast.
- 11:06SPEAKER_03: I have not gone in and tried to edit it yet, so don't ask about that one.
- 11:10SPEAKER_03: Um, but the the idea of that is we wanted to finally give everybody a chance to hear us play, which we have not really done yet.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: Uh initial gut reaction is we took it to heart and everybody was role-playing pretty hardcore.
- 11:23SPEAKER_03: So it was if you've ever seen Rick and Morty, we play some of those characters.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: It was a lot of a lot of first for us too, right?
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: So um we're playing in Foundry, yes, which Brett got us set up on, which so far I love.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: I don't know what you guys thought.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: Like, different new for us, and it's a lot of uh getting used to, which we're gonna have to good luck editing all the pauses out, Ross.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: That's fine.
- 11:47SPEAKER_03: Pauses are simple.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: That's okay.
- 11:49SPEAKER_03: Um, so yeah, there's lots of uh new things in that.
- 11:52SPEAKER_03: We'll probably talk about that over the summer.
- 11:54SPEAKER_03: We may do, I mean, we'll probably do a little review and include foundry in that too.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: So there'll probably be three or four episodes that we'll drop on the summer.
- 12:01SPEAKER_03: Otherwise, most of our content over the next few months is actually gonna be on YouTube.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: We're gonna start releasing some mid-range form videos in the five to ten minute range that that are talking about some of the things we've already talked about in a very condensed form.
- 12:17SPEAKER_03: Um, and then we'll have YouTube shorts, things like that.
- 12:20SPEAKER_03: We'll continue to drop our podcast episodes.
- 12:21SPEAKER_03: You can always listen to those over on YouTube.
- 12:23SPEAKER_03: So um, if you have not subscribed, I would highly suggest you do so because that's where you're gonna see the bulk of our content.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: Now, season three.
- 12:31SPEAKER_03: Season three is gonna be a ton of fun.
- 12:33SPEAKER_03: We've already talked a little bit about how we're gonna finish out the classes, we're gonna start talking about races in DD, like the the benefits of various races, things like that.
- 12:43SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're gonna dive into uh DD and AI.
- 12:46SPEAKER_03: That's probably gonna be one of the very early episodes that we're gonna talk about.
- 12:49SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're gonna talk about we're gonna get into the weeds.
- 12:51SPEAKER_03: I think that's the best way to put it.
- 12:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, is like we've done a really good overview to this point for new players to DD, and now it's time to start diving into some of those, like and nitpicking some rules and things like that.
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: So, like on our list, we have things like handling food, water, and dealing with encumbrance.
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: That is typically not something that players think about, but it's is a set of rules within the book that of things you can track and things that you can deal with.
- 13:13SPEAKER_03: So, doing that, talking about the different types of casting, so cantrips, spells, ritual casting, like how those work, the the different pieces to those.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: We haven't really dove into that too too deep.
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: Uh, as well as we're gonna continue the beers every other week.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: So one of the things that I'm excited about on the episode list too is talking about like the opponent strategy during combat and about monsters.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: I'm pretty excited about those couple episodes.
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: One of the ones I'm excited about is touching on like how how to avoid trying to make the perfect party and like not min-maxing everything when you get a group of people around a table together.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: That's one I'm really excited to dive into.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: Well, I think that's gonna pretty much wrap up our our season two rap.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: We're gonna wrap the wrap.
- 14:01SPEAKER_03: Wrap the wrap.
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: And then our our little bit of season three preview here.
- 14:05SPEAKER_03: So again, look be on the lookout for let's see if we can break frost.
- 14:13SPEAKER_03: Not make eye contact.
- 14:15SPEAKER_03: Uh so be on the lookout for uh Rick and Morty uh DD play dropping over the summer.
- 14:20SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're also gonna have we may have another beer we've been floating, potentially having a summer beer that we review and drop this summer.
- 14:26SPEAKER_03: But really, the the big deal is uh if you want to be catching content from us before we launch season three, which is tentatively scheduled for September 1st, to be subscribing to our YouTube channel so you catch any of the content that we're putting out over the summer.
- 14:40SPEAKER_03: Uh, but any thoughts, guys, before we get out of here?
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: It's fun.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: Hey, and if you have any mailbag questions, send us an email, drop us a comment on any of our social media channels.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: We'd love to hear them, and we'll start pulling together those questions for next time.
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: Yes, and you actually made me think of one thing.
- 14:57SPEAKER_03: Uh Buzz Sprout, that is our hosting platform, actually just enabled like a texting feature.
- 15:03SPEAKER_03: And so wherever you find your podcast, there'll be a little link in the description where you can text the show.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: So even if it's just a message saying, hey, this was a great episode, or if you have an idea or a question that you want us to address on a mailbag, click that link and send us a message.
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: That's the whole purpose for that is to give us feedback, uh, encouragement, whatever you want to do.
- 15:21SPEAKER_03: Uh, but totally utilize that.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: We're gonna enable that when we get into season three.
- 15:25SPEAKER_03: So uh anyway, I think that's gonna do it not only for this episode of Bards and Barrels, but this season of Bards and Barrels.
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: You, of course, you can listen to all of our past episodes, uh, anywhere podcasts can be found.
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: If you want to stay in the loop, not miss the latest from us, for sure.
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: Go subscribe on YouTube.
- 15:39SPEAKER_03: That's the big thing.
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: But you can follow us uh on Facebook and Instagram at Bards and Barrels as well.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: Anyway, we'll see you soon.
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: Have a great summer.
