- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:06Speaker 2: We have a.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Follow up here on one leg up with Alex Garrett.
- 0:09Speaker 1: We have a follow up. Fernando Mahia, remember the man
- 0:13Speaker 1: who runs Schmear Bagel and cafe right here in Port Washington,
- 0:18Speaker 1: had a major win as announced on July second, twenty
- 0:23Speaker 1: twenty five. Yes, two hundred forty nine years after the
- 0:28Speaker 1: declaration of independence where they say all men should be equal. Well,
- 0:33Speaker 1: Fernando Mahea found his justice two hundred for nine years
- 0:36Speaker 1: later when they won a temporary reprieve from a long
- 0:41Speaker 1: standing deportation order when his attorney filed emotion to delay
- 0:48Speaker 1: and whatnot. This was a report on news Day and
- 0:52Speaker 1: by Port Li Press Patch Port Washington. I mean a
- 0:58Speaker 1: lot of outlets cover this even as I'm working through
- 1:01Speaker 1: the papers here The New York Times and a Wednesday,
- 1:04Speaker 1: June twenty fifth, twenty five article titled Nassau County is
- 1:09Speaker 1: sued for working with US immigration agents aka ice. Luis
- 1:13Speaker 1: Ferrey Soderni writes this The suit comes as Long Island,
- 1:21Speaker 1: where immigrants account for about one fifth of the population,
- 1:25Speaker 1: has experienced a visible increase in ice activity in recent
- 1:28Speaker 1: weeks that has prompted protests, he writes, including a rally
- 1:35Speaker 1: on Saturday, which was going to be June twenty eighth
- 1:41Speaker 1: at the time, on Saturday in Port Washington and Long
- 1:45Speaker 1: Islands North Shore, where more than one hundred residents demanded
- 1:49Speaker 1: this was Saturday prior actually demanded the release of Fernando Mahea,
- 1:53Speaker 1: the longtime manager of a popular bagel shop who was
- 1:56Speaker 1: arrested by Ice this month. He was arrested for an overstay.
- 2:00Speaker 1: And to me, as I've said before.
- 2:04Speaker 2: There are people here illegally.
- 2:11Speaker 1: That are doing real crime, like real criminal activity overstaying
- 2:16Speaker 1: of visa. I've sort of softened on. This does not
- 2:19Speaker 1: feel as intense. It's something that Mahia can rectify. And
- 2:23Speaker 1: I'm so glad that he won this deportation reprieve because
- 2:28Speaker 1: because he does want to contribute to society. He is
- 2:31Speaker 1: contributing to society. He delivers to my fiance and I
- 2:36Speaker 1: at the door here. We know him, We've talked to him.
- 2:40Speaker 1: He's not a bad guy, and so I'm very excited
- 2:43Speaker 1: that he won the reprieve. More importantly, it's very interesting.
- 2:47Speaker 1: The New York Times picked up on this story as well.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Following a June twenty first protest in favor of.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Mahia. And this is why community matters.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Look, we can talk about all the division that the
- 2:59Speaker 1: media so, but when the community comes together like that,
- 3:03Speaker 1: that's why I love America. That is the spirit of America.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Community always wins out over government. I will always say
- 3:13Speaker 1: that the founding fathers did not intend for a big
- 3:17Speaker 1: government to rule our lives. They intended for communities to
- 3:21Speaker 1: rule America. It's for the people, by the people. That's
- 3:25Speaker 1: what they write. For the people, by the people, not
- 3:29Speaker 1: government entities. And while I have always liked what Bruce
- 3:36Speaker 1: Blakeman is doing, and I agree that there should be
- 3:39Speaker 1: a crackdown on violent illegals, not those that oversay visus
- 3:46Speaker 1: because those can be rectified. Those can be rectified. But
- 3:51Speaker 1: should NASA County collaborate with ICE in the way they
- 3:54Speaker 1: have Civil liberty unions say no. I say there should
- 4:03Speaker 1: be a presence of ICE if needed. However, a collaborative
- 4:08Speaker 1: effort like that where they're literally partnering just to make
- 4:11Speaker 1: Trump happy, that doesn't feel good to me.
- 4:15Speaker 2: That doesn't sound good to me.
- 4:18Speaker 1: And it was interesting that this all happened around July second,
- 4:21Speaker 1: because a day after, on July third, they approved the
- 4:24Speaker 1: Big Beautiful Bill, and there were two Republicans that said no.
- 4:28Speaker 1: And I hadn't really unveiled this thought, but when I
- 4:31Speaker 1: was watching the fireworks on July fourth, love of country, yes,
- 4:37Speaker 1: but it just was a bit sad that they were
- 4:41Speaker 1: signing this bill in to affect that same day that
- 4:45Speaker 1: we're stripping different, you know, kind of accesses to Medicaid,
- 4:54Speaker 1: because I believe while they're trying to root out the
- 4:56Speaker 1: Medicaid for those here illegally, they're also rooting Medicaid for
- 5:01Speaker 1: Americans that are here, born here. And don't forget the
- 5:05Speaker 1: SNAP program, which can use a lot of change also,
- 5:10Speaker 1: but don't strip it away. And so as the fireworks
- 5:12Speaker 1: were going off as President Trump was signing this big
- 5:15Speaker 1: beautiful bill, I couldn't help that this is not what
- 5:18Speaker 1: the Founding fathers wanted. There is much more work to do,
- 5:22Speaker 1: and this reprieve to find out about. I know it's
- 5:27Speaker 1: July twentieth and I'm reporting on it now, but to
- 5:29Speaker 1: find out about it now gives me hope that when
- 5:33Speaker 1: the community and for the people really come to life,
- 5:37Speaker 1: that is what the Founding fathers wanted, the community efforts,
- 5:46Speaker 1: not the government telling us what to do. That's what
- 5:51Speaker 1: we got away from in two hundred forty nine years ago.
- 5:56Speaker 1: We also got away from judges ruling for the whole land.
- 5:59Speaker 1: I keep saying that, but it's true. But we didn't
- 6:05Speaker 1: go from independence from Britain to be told what to
- 6:10Speaker 1: do by a bigger government. The government should be working
- 6:12Speaker 1: with us, not against us. And in this case, it
- 6:20Speaker 1: seems like they were working against this hard worker, Fernando Mahia,
- 6:27Speaker 1: by detaining him and making his life hell. I know
- 6:30Speaker 1: that he had attorneys, he had legal fees. There will
- 6:33Speaker 1: be gofund me signs all over Port Washington for him.
- 6:37Speaker 2: But here to announce.
- 6:39Speaker 1: On July twentieth, in case you're here already, Fernando Mahia
- 6:42Speaker 1: has won a deportation reprieve as of July second. That
- 6:49Speaker 1: is major and I'll have all the details in the
- 6:52Speaker 1: description below. But this is one case where you can
- 6:57Speaker 1: have one lego, where the justice and can have one
- 6:59Speaker 1: lego for those hard workers, one case at a time,
- 7:05Speaker 1: though not across the land, as some Vegian judges have
- 7:08Speaker 1: felt the need to do.
- 7:14Speaker 2: And so that's it.
- 7:16Speaker 1: That's how we have one leg up is by reporting
- 7:18Speaker 1: these winds for those in our communities, not just on
- 7:25Speaker 1: a wide scale thing, but right here in Port Washington,
- 7:28Speaker 1: or in Queens, or in the Bronx, or in Brooklyn
- 7:31Speaker 1: or New York.
- 7:31Speaker 2: City, because those winds, those community efforts will let us
- 7:36Speaker 2: have one leg up for America as we had into
- 7:38Speaker 2: year two fifty, as we head into year two fifty.
- 7:44Speaker 1: I was going to report on another story, but I'll
- 7:46Speaker 1: leave that for another day because that's a lot more intense.
- 7:50Speaker 1: But I want to end this week with some good news,
- 7:55Speaker 1: and I want to also preview that I'll be proved
- 8:00Speaker 1: using the Able newsletter for July. It is the thirty
- 8:02Speaker 1: fifth anniversary of the ADA coming up this July twenty sixth,
- 8:07Speaker 1: twenty twenty five, and I just got worried that Texas
- 8:12Speaker 1: has become the first state to become ADA compliant with
- 8:18Speaker 1: airway clearance devices. Thank you Tony about in Equal First
- 8:21Speaker 1: Aid for telling me about this. As now in Texas
- 8:24Speaker 1: there will be devices placed like life back placed in
- 8:27Speaker 1: every public and private school to prevent school choking trategedies.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Congrats on Texas for being this first state to have
- 8:36Speaker 1: one leg up on this and being ADA compliant.
- 8:41Speaker 2: And she'd like.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Those who know about this now to joinforces with Equal
- 8:47Speaker 1: First Aid to help make your schools safe and compliant
- 8:51Speaker 1: as well. We'll create a graphic for her and Equal
- 8:55Speaker 1: First Aid to be debuted tomorrow. But I want to
- 8:57Speaker 1: break that news to you as well. The Texas First
- 9:00Speaker 1: they had become ADA compliant when it comes to that
- 9:04Speaker 1: airway clearance devices allowance across schools in Texas. So another
- 9:11Speaker 1: big win there. But I want to say, speaking of ADA,
- 9:16Speaker 1: I'm gonna be perusing able News and finding out some
- 9:18Speaker 1: of the best and top leaders in the disabled community.
- 9:23Speaker 1: They're all top leaders, but who really I've seen Judy Newman,
- 9:28Speaker 1: of course, doctor Viscardi. I gotta highlight Chris Rose. I
- 9:32Speaker 1: mean his rise to become president of the Viscarti Center
- 9:35Speaker 1: is really special as well. Joe Salonica. I mean, here's
- 9:40Speaker 1: a guy who has been continuing his work not only
- 9:44Speaker 1: as a coach, but as a advocate up in Albany
- 9:47Speaker 1: for kids at Viscardi School. We'll talk maybe with him
- 9:50Speaker 1: or about him this week and others that Able News
- 9:55Speaker 1: is highlighting as we go along. Look, they told me
- 9:58Speaker 1: to start tomorrow at I keep saying today's tomorrow in
- 10:02Speaker 1: covering those disabilities, especially as we hit the thirty fifth
- 10:06Speaker 1: anniversary of the Ada, which doctor Viscardi was a big,
- 10:11Speaker 1: big part of back.
- 10:14Speaker 2: In nineteen ninety.
- 10:15Speaker 1: He's been photographed with a lot of presidents over his life,
- 10:19Speaker 1: and Carter hw Bush are just.
- 10:22Speaker 2: A couple like them to mine.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Of course, Eldor Roosevelt gave him eight thousand dollars eight
- 10:30Speaker 1: thousand dollars to start the Human Resources Center back in
- 10:34Speaker 1: nineteen fifty two, now the Viscardi Center. And look how
- 10:37Speaker 1: much doctor v went and grew that whole brick building
- 10:42Speaker 1: in Alberson. I like to say so. Eighty eight preview
- 10:45Speaker 1: coming up, the EIGHTYA coverage coming up this week on
- 10:48Speaker 1: one leg up with Alex Garrett and a win for
- 10:51Speaker 1: Port Washington. As Shmeir Bagel and Cafe has nanda he
- 10:59Speaker 1: is deportation should order temporarily reprieve, meaning he can stay
- 11:05Speaker 1: and hopefully he comes back and helps out smear Bageling Cafe,
- 11:10Speaker 1: and we can all congratulate him on this win. And
- 11:13Speaker 1: I know, as I said watching the fireworks on July second,
- 11:16Speaker 1: July fourth, there's so much more work to do to make.
- 11:20Speaker 2: It so
- 11:22Speaker 1: This country is for the people, by the people, as
- 11:25Speaker 1: the founding fathers wanted now two hundred and forty nine
- 11:29Speaker 1: years ago,
