- 0:01Jeff Lewald is our Broncos insider Altitude Sports Radio ninety five Pro football, the
- 0:07insider I've covered while Jeff his appearances are always must listen radio. You learn
- 0:14a lot. He's Leggy. Altitude Sports Radio ninety five. Yeah, Jeff
- 0:24Legwall time here on Monday afternoon. We welcome him into the program. Right
- 0:30now, Jeff Legwald. We we choose to start today's interview in unique fashion.
- 0:36We've never opened with this question, but why the hell not? Jeff?
- 0:39What's in your backpack? Oh? My backpack all work stuff? Oh,
- 0:46nothing but sportswriter stuff. We just do it on air sports. Yeah,
- 0:57never mind, nothing extremeious said, no, there's no it's the no
- 1:03fun league in the backpack. I'll tell you that right now. All right,
- 1:07Jeff, Apparently bo Nick's the contents of his backpack. Impressive enough?
- 1:12Uh for Sean Payton, You've seen the rest of the draft, plus the
- 1:18Broncos, I I thought made a pretty savvy move to upgrade their defensive line.
- 1:23I was happy to see that big picture how they do this weekend?
- 1:29You know, when you factor in the trade, you know, and and
- 1:33I thought, honestly, you know, I know we're all going to talk
- 1:34about the Knicks pick for you know ever, you know, or just endlessly
- 1:41until camp starts. When's he gonna play and all that. But I thought
- 1:44in the middle of the draft they got amazing value. I mean, they
- 1:49got to top one hundred players on a lot of team spoards, not just
- 1:53my list, uh, you know, in the in the third and fourth
- 1:57round, and you know that that was it was tremendous, tremendous value there.
- 2:02So I thought they did well in the middle, and it seemed to
- 2:08me, you know, depending on what you think that you know, I
- 2:12honestly don't believe that bo Nicks was the twelfth player on their board or better,
- 2:19but I thought they liked him enough to take them there. But I
- 2:23do think otherwise they stuck to their board, or I think that really felt
- 2:28like they stuck to their board. And when you put that much planning and
- 2:32preparation into it, that's that's really how to smartly handle the draft. You
- 2:38know. What I also like, Jeff, is that there wasn't a whole
- 2:40lot of you know, picking from future trees, you know, picking apple
- 2:45off the future trees, if you will, giving up draft picks from the
- 2:47next future classes to move around this one too much, so you kept things
- 2:53intact. And now you go ahead, who is your favorite player out of
- 2:58the draft class? Who is the most maybe your gym or whatever that you
- 3:01like. As far as the best player now worried about next year, who
- 3:06do you think the best player they may have got is? Well, you
- 3:08know, the best is hard for me. I think in terms of just
- 3:13value, what you might get from the player from where you picked him.
- 3:16I think Estimate has a really chance to be, you know, one of
- 3:21those guys where we're talking about, oh man, you know they picked him,
- 3:27you know, at the one hundred and forty seventh pick of the draft
- 3:29and he's doing this. I think he has a chance to be an immediate
- 3:34contributor if if they'll just play rookies moving forward. But I thought another very
- 3:42high value pick and what is suddenly a crowded battle to start at corner opposite
- 3:49U sir Can and I thought Abram Strain was a very very high value pick,
- 3:53you know, really a competitive, feisty. I mean, this guy
- 4:02credited with forty passes defense in the SEC. That's getting it done. So
- 4:08I thought that was a real high Larus Peck right, and those two fifth
- 4:11rounders. I thought we were well done. Well. Speaking of value,
- 4:15LEGGI, you had Troy Franklin out of Oregon rated at number forty four in
- 4:19your top one hundred. Broncos take him at number one two in the draft.
- 4:25Obviously, the familiarity with bo Nicks is a bonus when it comes to
- 4:30Troy Franklin. What else do you like there? Well, that's you know,
- 4:34they don't have that element in their offense. I'm in favor of anything
- 4:39that adds that kind of speed to you know, they are not considered a
- 4:44fast team. So anything like any any player like him added to the equation
- 4:49is a good thing, I think. And again, you know, are
- 4:53you gonna play him more than you played Marvin? You know, Marvin Mems
- 4:56played what three hundred and sixty eight snaps last year that you know, are
- 5:00we going to see these guys? I mean, they loved them this weekend
- 5:04when we heard them talking about it. But you know, well they love
- 5:08them on the field, and he could add an element the Broncos don't have
- 5:13if they play him, especially if Mims is in the formation too. Uh.
- 5:18You know, look, it's interesting. I like the class you grabbed
- 5:24a lot of the positions that we talked about. What are they going to
- 5:26do with tight end though, Leggy, they still have a lot of tight
- 5:29end choices. Are they gonna go ahead and hope that Dulcage stays healthy?
- 5:32Do they like who was a Lucas Kroll they had last year? I mean,
- 5:36they're just going to stick status quo at tight end? Well right now,
- 5:41I think all of the above. I mean, I'm not sure.
- 5:44I don't think I saw a tight end in the undrafteds even so u uh,
- 5:49yeah, you know they what you said is true. They're hoping Dulphin
- 5:54has passed his troubles and they do like Lucas Krawl in the next stare,
- 5:59So I think yes and yes. And the board didn't fall their way and
- 6:03it was not a particularly deep class, so you know, you know,
- 6:10they had a shot at fours and chose to go the other way with the
- 6:14quarterback. Obviously, I would have been intrigued, I guess a little bit
- 6:18to see what might have happened had they had a second round pick. In
- 6:24the upper third of the second round, I would have been intrigued to see
- 6:28how they handled everything if that, But that's you know, are you suggesting
- 6:32maybe grab Nicks then and not at twelve or later. I mean, I
- 6:39you know again, it was an unprecedented quarterback draft. We've never seen anything
- 6:43like it. There's never been anything like it. I just simply will tell
- 6:46you, in all of the drafts I've ever covered, in all of the
- 6:50personnel people in the league I've ever talked to, no team has ever had
- 6:55six quarterbacks in the top twelve grades on their board. No team, not
- 7:00one time, not ever. And that's how it was drafted. And if
- 7:04you talk to people in the league, an awful lot of people are surprised
- 7:09and yet not surprised it happened that way. But it was unprecedented its history,
- 7:15and the Broncos were part of it. Yep. Jeff Legwald ad bo
- 7:18Nicks at number thirty nine on his big board, his top one hundred,
- 7:21which is available to you at ESPN dot com. You can see how the
- 7:26Broncos stacked up. They took Jonah Ellis out of Utah, who Legwald had
- 7:30at ninety five, Troy Franklin at forty four, they drafted him one oh
- 7:33two, and then Chris Abrams Drain out of Missouri. Legwald sixty fourth rated
- 7:39prospect in this class. The Broncos drafted him at number one, forty five,
- 7:43So on the Jeff Legwalald board, some pretty damn good value that the
- 7:46Broncos got. Jeff Legwall joining us on the Ramos Law hotline car accident You

- 7:55The acquisition of John Franklin Myers from the New York Jets, the Broncos
- 8:00essentially gave up nothing to acquire a player. They restructure his contract get him
- 8:05into a very affordable spot. This is a very savvy acquisition where the Broncos
- 8:09were able to scoop something up that the Jets had to get rid of.
- 8:13Where does he fit into this team immediately? How much better does he make
- 8:16this defense? Well, I mean depending how bow Knicks does in his career.
- 8:22I mean right now, that's the best move of the weekend in terms
- 8:26of immediate, immediate help. This guy's a it's hard to believe. It's
- 8:31hard for me to believe that the Jets would give him up. But after
- 8:35they signed Reddick, you know they took on Reddick. They couldn't keep him
- 8:41for the money he was set to make. So his role as immediate starter
- 8:46and heavy contributor, you know, he's been durable, productive, and the
- 8:50guy gets interior pressure, which is a hard fine you know, and defensive
- 8:56line play in the league, and he can consistently one of the better guys
- 9:01on interior pressure. The sack numbers may not reflect it, but that's not
- 9:05that's not everything with him as a player. And he can play probably all
- 9:11three spots in the three man front, you know, in the nickel he
- 9:15gets pumped out all the way inside. He can play both end spots.
- 9:18And with Zach Allen, hard for me to find two more sort of high
- 9:22motor defensive ends in the league right now than those two guys are real great.
- 9:30Camp on the oh, go ahead, no finish off, Nate,
- 9:33I just I was gonna say you camp on the name DJ Jones right there.
- 9:35Suddenly that front three kind of looks like a little bit of a strength.
- 9:37Go ahead, Andy, just real quick, Spencer Ratler, are you
- 9:41surprised you feel as far as he did? Well? I mean, after
- 9:46history has made I think people took a long breath at quarterback because when when
- 9:52six go in the top twelve picks, that sort of resets and I think
- 9:58this is what we're going to see now if teams have obviously shown they're gonna
- 10:01draft quarterbacks not just a little bit above where they're graded, but a lot,
- 10:05and that means there's not going to be a middle class. Probably in
- 10:09the draft, you're you may not see too many more second and third round
- 10:13quarterbacks because if people want them bad enough that they've already proven, uh,
- 10:18they're going to take them uh and take them early. And I think that's
- 10:22what happened. There was no middle class for quarterbacks in this draft after the
- 10:28historical you know, party time. Uh if it was a long ways until
- 10:33Rattler got taken as the next guy, but party yah. Yeah. Now,
- 10:43I mean the Broncos were interested in Rattler, they had done a lot
- 10:46of work on them. And I think that if the Knixt thing didn't work
- 10:48out, uh, I think you would have ended up here with one of
- 10:52either the third or the fourth round pick. And yet here we are.
- 10:56It's bo Nix's world. Jeff Legwall to ESPN, Uh read this stuff right

- 11:03you. Take care both
