- 0:27Hey, everybody. Good morning from the chicken
- 0:30coop. So today we're talking about
- 0:32taking risks. And it's one of the hardest
- 0:34things that I think most people struggle with is where is the
- 0:38line where they feel comfortable taking risks and what does the
- 0:42risk mean to us? So if we start right at the very
- 0:45beginning and we start asking what do risks mean to us, How do
- 0:48we feel when we have to take risks?
- 0:51What are the things that make us scared about taking a risk and
- 0:56how we define that risk is the biggest piece of this puzzle.
- 1:00So if you've never asked yourself the very important
- 1:03question, how do I define taking risk?
- 1:06It's probably one of the most powerful questions you can ask
- 1:10yourself because in the moment you are not in a risk situation.
- 1:15Now often times a risk will show up and we don't think.
- 1:18Now, I've been through this myself once, you know, last
- 1:21spring, one of the chickens, you know when he had babies at the
- 1:26time and one of them got one of the babies got snatched by a
- 1:31snake that was hiding under a pile of wood and it was not a
- 1:36poisonous snake. But I didn't know that at the
- 1:38time. And if someone had said to me,
- 1:40would you ever just reach down and grab a snake to rescue a
- 1:43baby chick, the answer clearly would have been, I'm not sure.
- 1:47I don't know. I guess no, right?
- 1:49Like I would have. I would have thought it out in
- 1:51that moment, but in the moment it happened, I didn't even
- 1:55think. I just reached down, grabbed the
- 1:57snake, picked it up, unwound it through it, and rescued the baby
- 2:02chick before anything happened to it.
- 2:04Now, here's the thing about this I didn't have a plan for this
- 2:09ahead of time. If I had had a plan ahead of
- 2:12time, I would have immediately said OK, I can't touch that
- 2:17snake. I just never It never.
- 2:19The situation never occurred to me ahead of time.
- 2:21So I didn't know what my plan was.
- 2:23So I jumped in and I just went into fight or flight and I
- 2:26grabbed it and that was it. I just watched the thing on the
- 2:28news here this morning about a man who was walking his
- 2:32Chihuahua and the the dog got grabbed by a coyote, like right
- 2:36out while the guy was with him. And this guy was a big guy.
- 2:39And the dog got grabbed on the leash by the coyote, and this
- 2:44guy reached down and grabbed that coyote.
- 2:47He got bitten by it. He needed to have rabies shots,
- 2:49but he actually grabbed that coyote, wrestled it off his dog,
- 2:53picked it up by the tail and threw it in a dumpster.
- 2:56It was insane what he did. Now there's no question in my
- 3:01mind, he didn't think about that risk, that he just did it
- 3:03because he was going to rescue his dog.
- 3:06And that's what happens when you go into fight or flight, those
- 3:09kind of risks. We're not necessarily talking
- 3:12about those kind of risks. We can talk about those kind of
- 3:14risks. Like, now I know in my mind it's
- 3:17been set up. My husband made sure don't touch
- 3:19the snakes come get me. OK, great.
- 3:22Now I know. So that's a that's set up in my
- 3:25head. But sometimes fight or flight
- 3:27takes over. But most of the time we're not
- 3:29talking about those situations. We're talking about risks that
- 3:33are involved in our everyday world, business relationships,
- 3:36that kind of thing. And when you understand how you
- 3:40define risks and how they make you feel, it's easier to
- 3:44understand when they show up, how you're going to contemplate
- 3:47them. So one of the most useful tools
- 3:49that I've ever found is actually splitting a piece of paper down
- 3:53the middle and saying positives and negatives because it gives
- 3:56you a chance to brain dump the stressors in your head about it
- 4:00and then you can start to calculate, OK, is this worth it?
- 4:03I will tell you, when you do this process and defining
- 4:07things, it's easy to assign numbers rather than words.
- 4:11Like when you write it all down. And if you're in a situation
- 4:13where you're deciding risks right now, you split the paper,
- 4:17positives, negatives, and then you start saying on a scale of
- 4:20one to 10, one being not at all, 10 being off the chart, How, how
- 4:25risky is this? And you start assigning numbers,
- 4:27it's going to be easier for you to make a decision rather than
- 4:29just saying, well, I mean, it's OK or it's it's medium.
- 4:34Medium doesn't mean anything, 'cause it mean it's different to
- 4:36everybody. So practice now deciding how you
- 4:41define a risk and where are the risks coming up this year for
- 4:45you? Where do you see them showing up
- 4:47right away in your business, in personal life and you stretching
- 4:50yourself? Because if you can think about
- 4:52them ahead of time and can decide how you define them,
- 4:57you're going to be infinitely better off when they show up.
- 5:00So it's just start capturing it all, start thinking about it and
- 5:03say to yourself, OK, most people will say, well I'm a risk taker.
- 5:07They jump in and they're like I I will be the first one to tell
- 5:10you I am certainty driven, I will take risks.
- 5:15However, they are calculated in my head greatly.
- 5:19I, the situation with a snake fight or flight, didn't even
- 5:23know about that ahead of time, but calculated risks.
- 5:27Yes, I will take them, but they are calculated in my mind.
- 5:31So if you take yourself through the whole process, you will be
- 5:35better off with whatever you're trying to do this year for your
- 5:38outcomes. All right, my friends, I hope
- 5:41you have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 5:43Bye.
