Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome in. Another day of the next round. Local Lance Taylor.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I'm Ryan Brown. Jim Dunaway continuing his Irish vacation. He'll
- 0:07Speaker 1: be back with us next week. Right now, fake Dunaway
- 0:11Speaker 1: sporting that hard rock bats helmet. Tyler Johns here. Scott
- 0:15Speaker 1: Forrester here. Brooks Carter stepping away for a couple days.
- 0:18Speaker 1: We are glad to be with you and we have
- 0:20Speaker 1: got a lot to get to. Clay Travis coming up
- 0:22Speaker 1: on the show. We're going to try to build the
- 0:26Speaker 1: most absurd college football bracket that you realistically could build.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yep.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Like there's some absurdities of teams that are still alive
- 0:32Speaker 1: that if we just built the bracket with those teams
- 0:34Speaker 1: here halfway through the season, it would be crazy.
- 0:36Speaker 3: And I'll tell you as absurd as it's going to be,
- 0:38Speaker 3: if these teams win a key game here or there,
- 0:41Speaker 3: I think these teams are really in the college football playoff.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I don't disagree with you. Like we're going to put
- 0:45Speaker 1: teams in what we're going to call an absurd bracket
- 0:47Speaker 1: that are actually in the bracket.
- 0:48Speaker 4: Right.
- 0:48Speaker 1: They're going to be in there eventually. Um, so we're
- 0:51Speaker 1: going to do that later in the show also. Um,
- 0:57Speaker 1: The group of six coaches on their own playoff. A
- 1:01Speaker 1: number that might surprise you about them separating away, which
- 1:04Speaker 1: I've always thought is going to happen anyway, and doing
- 1:06Speaker 1: their own playoff. But first, we generally start this show
- 1:08Speaker 1: with what we last saw. And last night, that was
- 1:10Speaker 1: the World Series coming to a close in Game 5.
- 1:12Speaker 1: The old gentlemen sweep as the Milwaukee Brewers Who were
- 1:16Speaker 1: the best team in this postseason? There's no doubt about that.
- 1:18Speaker 1: And they finish off the World Series by beating the
- 1:21Speaker 1: Raisin 5 down in Tampa.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Yeah, 11-2 in the postseason. And in their 58th year
- 1:26Speaker 3: of existence as the Milwaukee Brewers, they win their first
- 1:29Speaker 3: ever World Series championship. They blew a 3-1 lead in
- 1:32Speaker 3: Game 7 back in 1982 against the Cardinals. They close
- 1:36Speaker 3: it out here. You had your ace, Jacob Bezeroski, on
- 1:39Speaker 3: the hill last night. I mean, consistently hitting 102 or 103.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I had my buddy Chris send me a text. He
- 1:44Speaker 3: was like, If you knew 20 straight fastballs were coming,
- 1:50Speaker 3: do you think you could foul one off?
- 1:51Speaker 1: Wait a minute now. So 20 straight fastballs from the Miz,
- 1:54Speaker 1: and you knew that's what he was throwing. All right,
- 1:56Speaker 1: so let me quickly, before we get to that. Years ago,
- 2:00Speaker 1: on the radio side, I think it was Dunaway that
- 2:03Speaker 1: said he could return a Serena Williams serve one out
- 2:06Speaker 1: of 100. Inbounds return a serve. Do you remember that argument?
- 2:09Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:10Speaker 1: And I said, you wouldn't see the first 20. Like
- 2:14Speaker 1: the first 20 would be by you before you could
- 2:15Speaker 1: even get the racket in your hand.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Much easier to do that than this.
- 2:20Speaker 5: Much easier.
- 2:21Speaker 1: I would agree, but I don't think.
- 2:23Speaker 3: The circumference of the racket, like if you can even
- 2:26Speaker 3: find a general area just to put and just the
- 2:31Speaker 3: velocity from the serve would put it back over the net.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Whether it be in or not, I don't know.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the problem. You've got to get it in,
- 2:37Speaker 1: over the net and in. I had a really good
- 2:40Speaker 1: tennis player, an advanced tennis player, text me, I'll never
- 2:44Speaker 1: forget during that show, and said if she just used
- 2:48Speaker 1: her kick serve the whole time, Dunaway couldn't touch it.
- 2:51Speaker 1: And we were like, what's a kick serve? What's a
- 2:52Speaker 1: kick serve? And he's like, exactly. Yeah.
- 2:55Speaker 3: If she used her kick serve. I told him 20
- 2:57Speaker 3: years ago, yes. Reflexes.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Yeah, not now. No, I said then I didn't think
- 3:02Speaker 1: he could return one out of 100. So I get
- 3:04Speaker 1: 20 Miz fastballs, and I've got to what? Get one
- 3:07Speaker 1: in play? No, you've just got to make contact. Foul ball.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I mean, the problem is you and I have never
- 3:17Speaker 1: seen pitching like that ever. So the first 10, you're
- 3:20Speaker 1: going to be like.
- 3:21Speaker 3: I mean, I've gotten in the cage and I've seen 95.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:26Speaker 3: And 95 is like a whole nother world. To see 102, 103,
- 3:32Speaker 3: like I think I'd be so terrified of one of
- 3:35Speaker 3: those fastballs just getting away in the hole that it
- 3:37Speaker 3: would put through you.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Yeah. So when I was in college, I used to
- 3:41Speaker 1: run the batting cages at Woodland Park Batting Cages. Friend
- 3:44Speaker 1: of the family, Mike Burford, owned them. And he paid
- 3:46Speaker 1: me to just run them. He didn't want to deal
- 3:47Speaker 1: with it. He wanted me to run them, right? That
- 3:50Speaker 1: wasn't even real baseballs. It was kind of those waffle balls.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Those rubbery waffle balls. But the highest speed was 80,
- 3:55Speaker 1: but on the machine you could calibrate it to go faster.
- 3:58Speaker 1: But the problem is.
- 3:59Speaker 3: You didn't know where it was going.
- 4:00Speaker 1: The faster it got, the wilder it got. So my
- 4:03Speaker 1: buddies would come up and be like, turn it up
- 4:05Speaker 1: as high as it'll go. And I'm like, I will,
- 4:06Speaker 1: but one's going to catch you in the temple at
- 4:08Speaker 1: some point. I'm sure Mr. Burford was like, oh, great,
- 4:11Speaker 1: I got insurance.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Liability back in the early 90s, a little bit different
- 4:15Speaker 3: than it is now.
- 4:16Speaker 1: But you'd crank it up, and just nobody in the
- 4:18Speaker 1: box would crank it up and drop the ball in there.
- 4:21Speaker 1: I mean, it's insanity. And I don't even know if
- 4:24Speaker 1: that was really 90 miles an hour. It said it was.
- 4:27Speaker 1: But it was fast.
- 4:28Speaker 3: But, I mean, look, this 102-103, watching him throw, it's
- 4:31Speaker 3: just incredible. He goes five and two-thirds scoreless, only gives
- 4:34Speaker 3: up a couple of hits. Wasn't as dominant as he
- 4:36Speaker 3: had been, but just enough, and the Brewers– you know,
- 4:39Speaker 3: get this one.
- 4:40Speaker 1: We talked about this yesterday.
- 4:41Speaker 3: If it would have gone back to Milwaukee game six
- 4:46Speaker 3: after Mizoroski, maybe losing this and not having a great performance.
- 4:49Speaker 3: I think the pressure then flips, but the brewers are
- 4:51Speaker 3: able to get it done. And, um, Contreras is your MVP,
- 4:55Speaker 3: the eighth catcher to win the world series MVP.
- 4:57Speaker 1: The second former brave in a row, by the way,
- 4:59Speaker 1: because Freddie Freeman won it last year.
- 5:01Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 5:01Speaker 1: So I saw, I think Dave O'Brien, David, David O'Brien day.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I don't know if he goes by Dave or David.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I don't know how formal he is. Um, tweeted that
- 5:09Speaker 1: like okay well then who's the next former brave that's
- 5:11Speaker 1: going to win the mvp in the world series what
- 5:13Speaker 1: are the options uh he threw some out like dansby
- 5:16Speaker 1: swanson was one um who's the other one he threw
- 5:20Speaker 1: out he threw out one more i don't know obviously
- 5:23Speaker 1: brace fans hope it's a current brave that wins it
- 5:24Speaker 1: but uh anyway um so yeah contreras wins the mvp
- 5:29Speaker 1: If they had made it back to Milwaukee, you want
- 5:30Speaker 1: me to show you what was waiting on them?
- 5:32Speaker 3: Please.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Scott, show me this this morning. Look at this video.
- 5:34Speaker 1: This is in whatever their stadium is. Look at the
- 5:38Speaker 1: size of this crowd just watching the game on the screen.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Like you're seeing right behind home plate. Wait till they
- 5:43Speaker 1: pan this thing.
- 5:44Speaker 7: Okay.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Well, as they pan it, you know, watching the last
- 5:46Speaker 3: couple of nights at Tropicana.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Watch this.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Watch this.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Watch when they pan right here. Look, the entire upper
- 5:51Speaker 1: deck filled, the entire lower area filled, except for the
- 5:55Speaker 1: where you cannot see the screen.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Yeah, just looking for a party.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Yeah, that's insane.
- 5:59Speaker 3: But what was insane is how many Brewers fans have
- 6:02Speaker 3: been in the crowd. And I guess it was just
- 6:03Speaker 3: much cheaper to go to Tampa, purchase a ticket there,
- 6:06Speaker 3: than actually get a ticket there.
- 6:08Speaker 1: I guess it was impossible to get a ticket in Milwaukee.
- 6:09Speaker 1: That's the crowd for, and they're just watching the game
- 6:12Speaker 1: on TV. Yeah, what about the guy that held out
- 6:13Speaker 1: with the golden ticket?
- 6:14Speaker 2: Oh. Oh, I know.
- 6:15Speaker 1: He was waiting for game six or seven, the anytime ticket.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Did you ever see a list of people that were
- 6:20Speaker 1: holding out? I never saw a follow-up on that story,
- 6:22Speaker 1: but I would imagine there probably, wouldn't you have held
- 6:24Speaker 1: it for game six or seven? I mean, if you're
- 6:26Speaker 1: going to hold out, yeah. If you're going to hold out,
- 6:28Speaker 1: you may as well hold out for a big one.
- 6:31Speaker 1: One more connection on this, a connection to the show.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Congratulations to a friend of the show, Brett McCabe, who
- 6:38Speaker 1: was a sports psychologist for the Milwaukee Brewers. Brett lives
- 6:41Speaker 1: here in Birmingham. and has been a personal friend of
- 6:44Speaker 1: ours for a very long time and has done some
- 6:46Speaker 1: work here on the platform. You want to hear something
- 6:48Speaker 1: last night?
- 6:48Speaker 3: I talked to Brett McCabe this morning.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Did you really? Did he even tell you this?
- 6:52Speaker 3: He did not. We were talking about something. He sent
- 6:53Speaker 3: me this photo like 5.30 this morning. Yeah, completely different,
- 6:56Speaker 3: but he was just getting off a plane. I didn't
- 6:58Speaker 3: even ask him where he was because I know that
- 7:00Speaker 3: he is... from golfers to pitchers.
- 7:03Speaker 1: To obviously Alabama's team. That is wild.
- 7:07Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:08Speaker 1: So Brett, he texted me this this morning. I think
- 7:10Speaker 1: I got the text. It was probably like 6 something.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I said 5.30. I think it was after 6. And
- 7:15Speaker 1: I said, are you A, just going to bed, B,
- 7:18Speaker 1: just waking up, or C, you don't remember? And he said,
- 7:21Speaker 1: I slept for two hours. He actually did this with
- 7:24Speaker 1: the Dodgers last year. He was part of the Dodgers
- 7:26Speaker 1: group last year. And he said, I learned my lesson there.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Go ahead and grab two hours of sleep at least.
- 7:31Speaker 1: So he was flying back to Birmingham this morning from Tampa.
- 7:33Speaker 3: What a wild career he's got.
- 7:35Speaker 1: He does, man. That guy is, I mean, like he'll
- 7:39Speaker 1: randomly text me.
- 7:41Speaker 3: I mean, I got a text from SoFi of the
- 7:43Speaker 3: Bills-Rams game a couple of weeks ago.
- 7:45Speaker 1: He was in the end zone.
- 7:46Speaker 5: Oh, was he really?
- 7:47Speaker 1: Who was he working with, the Bills or the Rams?
- 7:49Speaker 3: I don't ask, you know. I guess it is privileged, right?
- 7:52Speaker 1: Sometimes, I guess. I mean, I think generally when he's
- 7:55Speaker 1: working with teams.
- 7:56Speaker 3: If he was working with the Rams kickers, we got
- 7:57Speaker 3: a problem.
- 7:58Speaker 1: That's true. Generally, when he's working with teams, he doesn't
- 8:01Speaker 1: mind it. But sometimes I think when it's an individual,
- 8:03Speaker 1: he'd prefer that be a little more privileged information, to
- 8:07Speaker 1: your point. But, no, he was working with the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 8:11Speaker 1: He said that on social media, so he wasn't exactly
- 8:13Speaker 1: trying to hide it. But that's pretty cool to stand
- 8:15Speaker 1: there and hold that trophy. Yeah, really cool. Brett McCabe,
- 8:19Speaker 1: former LSU pitcher, so he's a baseball guy, but working
- 8:22Speaker 1: with the Milwaukee Brewers, lives here in Birmingham, friend of ours,
- 8:25Speaker 1: so congrats to him as well.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Can you imagine how much Bob Euchre would have enjoyed
- 8:29Speaker 3: that last night?
- 8:29Speaker 1: You know, I had not even, and this is just
- 8:31Speaker 1: me not being a huge baseball guy, I had not
- 8:33Speaker 1: even thought about it until the postgame last night when
- 8:35Speaker 1: they were like, man, this is for you, Euchre, and
- 8:38Speaker 1: I thought it was pretty cool, the interview with, was
- 8:40Speaker 1: it Christian Jelic that said it, I think?
- 8:42Speaker 3: Yeah, Jelic has been there so freaking long.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Yeah, he's the longest-tenured brewer. I think the second-longest-tenured brewer
- 8:50Speaker 1: in brewer's history, if I'm not mistaken. And finally got
- 8:54Speaker 1: to lift that trophy, and he was one of the
- 8:55Speaker 1: first ones to say it. Like, man, Euchre would have
- 8:57Speaker 1: loved this. What if he had been around? That would
- 8:59Speaker 1: have been awesome, wouldn't it?
- 9:00Speaker 3: That would have been incredible. But, you know, Yellich, only
- 9:02Speaker 3: 34 years old.
- 9:03Speaker 1: He's only 34?
- 9:04Speaker 3: That is old, I guess, in baseball terms. But he,
- 9:08Speaker 3: you know, for the first five years was with the
- 9:11Speaker 3: Marlins in the last.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Nine years with Milwaukee.
- 9:16Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Great player back in the day. Still very, very solid.
- 9:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Nick, that's a pretty funny line. Nick said, I saw
- 9:24Speaker 1: somebody say if they didn't give the MVP to Contreras,
- 9:27Speaker 1: he was just going to tap his helmet until they
- 9:28Speaker 1: reviewed it and got it right.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Had a five-game series record 11 hit. So there could
- 9:43Speaker 3: have been maybe three different directions they could have gone in.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess Contreras was the right direction there.
- 9:49Speaker 3: I mean, he declared himself the greatest catcher in the world.
- 9:52Speaker 1: There you go. If you're the greatest catcher in the world,
- 9:54Speaker 1: you've got a shot at being the World Series MVP.
- 9:56Speaker 1: So that does it for baseball for How Long We
- 9:59Speaker 1: Do Not Know. The fear is for more than a year.
- 10:01Speaker 1: I hope that is not the case.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Well, you know, I had dinner with our buddy Will
- 10:05Speaker 3: Haver last night. And we were talking about the series
- 10:08Speaker 3: that was just starting when we were finishing dinner. And
- 10:12Speaker 3: I was like, who are you pulling for? And he
- 10:14Speaker 3: was like, well, I was pulling for the Brewers, but
- 10:16Speaker 3: now I'm pulling for the Rays. He was like, I
- 10:17Speaker 3: want to extend this and get it to seven games.
- 10:20Speaker 3: So he's a baseball guy and wants to watch as
- 10:22Speaker 3: much baseball because there is that fear next year that
- 10:25Speaker 3: we talked about. There will be a lockout, which you've
- 10:27Speaker 3: got plenty of time to have more reasonable minds figure
- 10:31Speaker 3: this thing out. But, I mean, they seem miles and
- 10:34Speaker 3: miles apart.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Yeah, they do. It's just crazier than in October. And
- 10:38Speaker 1: I don't even know what the major issues are right now.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I see your Dodgers getting blamed for a lot of it.
- 10:44Speaker 3: I'm sure.
- 10:44Speaker 1: And not necessarily they're just playing by the– the rules
- 10:50Speaker 1: that are allowed to play. I think it's not really
- 10:51Speaker 1: the Dodgers that are the problem. It's the rules that
- 10:53Speaker 1: are the problem, right? And the Dodgers just taking advantage
- 10:55Speaker 1: of those rules. Yeah, I mean, they've got the money
- 10:57Speaker 1: to spend. That's right. But the problem is they're not
- 10:59Speaker 1: spending it right now. They're spending it 20 years from now,
- 11:02Speaker 1: and there's your problem, I think, for.
- 11:03Speaker 5: A lot of people.
- 11:04Speaker 3: Yeah, when you defer that, like, to me, it was
- 11:07Speaker 3: getting really, really creative, especially with the Shohei deal.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I mean, other markets could do it. They could, yeah.
- 11:14Speaker 1: I mean, there's no doubt. There's nothing that stops them
- 11:16Speaker 1: from doing it. But I think a lot of baseball
- 11:19Speaker 1: people are like, we need to stop this train before
- 11:21Speaker 1: it leaves the station any further than it has. I
- 11:23Speaker 1: think that's going to be your issue.
- 11:25Speaker 3: And I understand that. I don't know how you do it.
- 11:27Speaker 1: I don't either.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Sounds good on the surface.
- 11:28Speaker 5: It does.
- 11:29Speaker 3: But I need to see a plan.
- 11:30Speaker 1: But it is wild to me that we are October
- 11:34Speaker 1: 29th and pitchers and catchers would report late February. Is
- 11:38Speaker 1: that right?
- 11:39Speaker 2: Yep.
- 11:39Speaker 1: And we're already saying, oh, there's going to be a lockout.
- 11:42Speaker 4: Like, I mean.
- 11:43Speaker 1: That's a lot of time that we could find some
- 11:45Speaker 1: common ground enough to get a season going. But it's
- 11:47Speaker 1: just amazing that they're already like, oh, that's not happening.
- 11:49Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, you've got 100 days.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Yeah. I don't anticipate they'll start meeting tomorrow. I'm sure
- 11:55Speaker 1: a lot of people want to sleep in for a
- 11:56Speaker 1: couple days. But still, it's wild to me that on
- 11:59Speaker 1: October 29th, we're already saying, oh, next February ain't happening.
- 12:03Speaker 1: There'll be no pitchers and catchers reporting. All right, so
- 12:06Speaker 1: off of that, off the World Series, I've got a
- 12:08Speaker 1: question I want to ask you. But first, I want
- 12:10Speaker 1: to remind everyone the show being presented by... Hard Rock Bet.
- 12:14Speaker 1: HardRock.Bet backslash Clay. HardRock.Bet backslash. Oh, wait a minute. I'm
- 12:18Speaker 1: not supposed to say backslash. What am I supposed to say, Tyler?
- 12:21Speaker 7: Slash.
- 12:22Speaker 3: I would just say slash so you don't get confused,
- 12:25Speaker 3: but it's forward slash. Yeah, you do slash, then you
- 12:28Speaker 3: let them make the mistake on whatever slash they do.
- 12:30Speaker 1: You pick whichever slash you like, but hardrock.bet slash clay.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Bet $ 5, get $ 500 and up to $ 500 in no
- 12:38Speaker 1: sweat bets. You might know the Hard Rock name. You
- 12:41Speaker 1: may not know Hard Rock Bet and the Hard Rock
- 12:43Speaker 1: Bet Sportsbook app. It is Florida's only legal sportsbook. Therefore,
- 12:47Speaker 1: the most trustworthy option in the market, available in also Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan,
- 12:53Speaker 1: New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, or Virginia. And tonight it is Thursday,
- 12:58Speaker 1: so you get that same game parlay profit boost for
- 13:03Speaker 1: the Thursday night games tonight. Also, don't forget happy hour tomorrow,
- 13:06Speaker 1: 4 to 6. You get some more no sweat bet
- 13:09Speaker 1: bonus bets there. Profit boost on Saturday for college football Saturdays.
- 13:14Speaker 1: And Sunday, choose your reward. You could choose a same
- 13:17Speaker 1: game parlay profit boost or no sweat bet for the
- 13:21Speaker 1: Sunday slate. So you've got a lot of options right
- 13:23Speaker 1: there at Hard Rock Bet. Go to hardrock.bet, where available,
- 13:28Speaker 1: slash clay. Hardrock.bet, slash clay, bet $ 5, get up to
- 13:33Speaker 1: $ 500 and no sweat bet. So it got me thinking.
- 13:36Speaker 1: That was the first world championship for the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 13:39Speaker 1: So it leaves four teams in Major League Baseball. I
- 13:45Speaker 1: think it has 11 teams in the NBA, or no,
- 13:47Speaker 1: nine in the NBA, 11 in the NFL that have
- 13:49Speaker 1: not won a championship. So I want to go through
- 13:52Speaker 1: each of these sports. And you tell me who do
- 13:55Speaker 1: you think the next one is to get their first championship, okay?
- 13:57Speaker 1: I mean, I've already got my answer, but... Major League Baseball,
- 14:01Speaker 1: you've got Seattle, San Diego, Tampa, and Colorado. San Diego, Seattle, Tampa,
- 14:07Speaker 1: and Colorado. That is correct. Those teams have never won
- 14:09Speaker 1: a world championship.
- 14:10Speaker 3: I mean, Tampa hasn't been in existence long, and they've
- 14:12Speaker 3: already been to three World Series.
- 14:13Speaker 1: I mean, they're closer than any of these.
- 14:15Speaker 3: Seattle was really close last year. I thought Seattle was
- 14:18Speaker 3: going to be last year's Milwaukee from this year.
- 14:21Speaker 1: And Seattle's been close historically. I don't know that I
- 14:23Speaker 1: would say Colorado's certainly not been close. San Diego hasn't.
- 14:26Speaker 3: San Diego's been close.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess they've been in the World Series. Yeah.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Back in the Trevor Hoffman days, right?
- 14:31Speaker 3: Yeah, they were in the World Series in 1996. Yeah.
- 14:32Speaker 1: 97.
- 14:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:34Speaker 1: 98.
- 14:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Somewhere in the 90s.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Yeah, it was Tony Gwynn's Padres against the Yankees. I
- 14:43Speaker 3: will go Seattle. I don't feel good about it.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Okay.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Wait, so.
- 14:48Speaker 3: The only one I really don't feel good about is Colorado.
- 14:51Speaker 3: I think Tampa, Seattle, and San Diego.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Tampa literally was just in the World Series.
- 14:54Speaker 3: And San Diego spends money. Seattle spends a little money too,
- 14:57Speaker 3: but I would go Seattle.
- 14:58Speaker 1: All right, Seattle. It's going to be your answer there.
- 15:00Speaker 1: In the NBA, these teams have never won a world championship.
- 15:04Speaker 1: The Brooklyn Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers,
- 15:08Speaker 1: Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, New Orleans, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns,
- 15:14Speaker 1: and Utah Jazz.
- 15:16Speaker 3: I would go Pacers or T-Wolves. Pacers in the NBA
- 15:20Speaker 3: Finals two years ago. T-Wolves in the Western Conference Final
- 15:24Speaker 3: two years ago. Dismantled a little bit. I'm going to
- 15:29Speaker 3: go Pacers.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Okay, Pacers there. In the NFL, the Cardinals, the Falcons,
- 15:34Speaker 1: the Bills, the Panthers, the Bengals, the Browns, the Lions,
- 15:39Speaker 1: the Texans, the Jags, the Chargers... The Vikings and the
- 15:44Speaker 1: Titans have never won a Super Bowl.
- 15:45Speaker 3: Well, the Vikings are undefeated right now.
- 15:47Speaker 1: They are undefeated right now, and they've been to more Super... Well,
- 15:50Speaker 1: them and Buffalo have been to more Super Bowls than
- 15:51Speaker 1: any of them. They've both been to four, right? Vikings
- 15:53Speaker 1: and Buffalo?
- 15:54Speaker 3: But just because of Buffalo's quarterback situation with the best
- 15:57Speaker 3: player on the planet, Josh Allen, I've got to go
- 15:59Speaker 3: Buffalo right now.
- 16:01Speaker 1: You're going against a tortured history right there.
- 16:04Speaker 3: And have you seen the new reality show that's out
- 16:06Speaker 3: on the Bills?
- 16:07Speaker 1: I've seen the commercial about it, and I'm like, I
- 16:09Speaker 1: do not like the Bills one bit. As a Dolphins fan,
- 16:12Speaker 1: I just don't know if I can watch it.
- 16:13Speaker 3: I almost jumped in, but I think it's going to
- 16:14Speaker 3: be a lot of the same thing about, you know,
- 16:16Speaker 3: my grandfather died, and I wear this jersey, and then
- 16:19Speaker 3: it's going to be the guy that jumps into flames.
- 16:21Speaker 5: On the day we.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Got married, we put in our wedding vows for better
- 16:24Speaker 1: or for worse, whether the Bills won the Super Bowl
- 16:26Speaker 1: or not. It's going to be a lot of stuff
- 16:27Speaker 1: like that I want to mention.
- 16:28Speaker 3: So I did not turn it on. But with all
- 16:31Speaker 3: that said, they are jinxed. I met a that wedding
- 16:34Speaker 3: I was at last month.
- 16:35Speaker 5: I met the.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Diehard Bills fan. They live and die by the Bills.
- 16:39Speaker 3: And I'm like, you've got a miserable existence because whatever
- 16:43Speaker 3: is going right ends up going wrong at the end.
- 16:46Speaker 1: It is remarkable the ways they have missed just playing
- 16:49Speaker 1: in a Super Bowl.
- 16:49Speaker 3: But I'm still going to stick with it because we
- 16:51Speaker 3: have seen in our lifetime now the Cubs win a
- 16:54Speaker 3: World Series championship.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:56Speaker 1: You know, Ben is right. What about a Vikings-Bills Super Bowl?
- 16:59Speaker 1: One of them finally gets to break the drought.
- 17:01Speaker 3: I don't know if I'd be in the stands. It's
- 17:02Speaker 3: no telling.
- 17:04Speaker 1: It could be the end of times. Yeah. Vikings-Bills Super Bowl.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Doesn't sound safe.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, like Arizona, they're not particularly close, right?
- 17:16Speaker 1: Atlanta really isn't. Carolina's close. Kind of close.
- 17:22Speaker 3: I don't know about close.
- 17:23Speaker 1: I guess when you do this, you're like, do they
- 17:25Speaker 1: have a good enough quarterback to win a Super Bowl?
- 17:27Speaker 1: Arizona does it. Atlanta I don't think does. Carolina, jury
- 17:31Speaker 1: is out, but I don't think they do. I don't know.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Bryce at times looks like that guy.
- 17:36Speaker 3: He's second in the NFL in passing yards right now.
- 17:40Speaker 1: 285 per game.
- 17:40Speaker 3: Their fifth in points scored at 26.5. They hosted a
- 17:44Speaker 3: playoff game last year, albeit it wasn't a great Carolina team,
- 17:47Speaker 3: but They had the Rams on the ropes. I mean,
- 17:50Speaker 3: it was a touchdown within the final minute that sent
- 17:53Speaker 3: the Rams on to the divisional round. So Carolina was
- 17:55Speaker 3: really close to winning a postseason game last year. They're
- 17:58Speaker 3: 3-3 big game tonight in Green Bay. I don't think
- 18:02Speaker 3: they're really close. Minnesota's defense is a championship defense. Statistically,
- 18:06Speaker 3: the best defense since the 2000 Ravens.
- 18:10Speaker 1: And the Buffalo Bills have the greatest player. Cincinnati certainly
- 18:13Speaker 1: has a quarterback that can get them to a Super Bowl.
- 18:17Speaker 1: He's done it once already. I would think he's good
- 18:19Speaker 1: enough to win a Super Bowl. If you can get there,
- 18:21Speaker 1: you should be good enough to win it, right?
- 18:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I think the Bengals are the mix because they
- 18:24Speaker 3: could easily. I think some people believe they're going to
- 18:26Speaker 3: win the NFC North. The NFC North is wide open
- 18:28Speaker 3: right now. Lamar Jackson, full participant in practice yesterday, should
- 18:33Speaker 3: be back after a month-long injury kept him out.
- 18:37Speaker 1: More on that coming up.
- 18:37Speaker 3: Yeah, going against the Bills this weekend. I don't know
- 18:42Speaker 3: who I lean in that division. I sure as I
- 18:44Speaker 3: don't lean Pittsburgh or Cleveland. So it is one of
- 18:46Speaker 3: those two. And maybe I do lean Cincinnati to win
- 18:49Speaker 3: that division.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Cleveland does not have a quarterback good enough to win
- 18:51Speaker 1: the Superbowl. He's Deshaun Watson's playing better, but he, I
- 18:54Speaker 1: don't think he's a Superbowl winning quarterback. Detroit does.
- 18:57Speaker 3: I mean, if you put, this is no exaggeration. If
- 19:00Speaker 3: you put Josh Allen on Cleveland's team, Cleveland would be
- 19:03Speaker 3: maybe your favorite.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Well, they're four and two right now. Five and two,
- 19:05Speaker 1: five and two, excuse me, five and two with Deshaun Watson. Um,
- 19:09Speaker 1: Detroit's got a quarterback that could win the Super Bowl. Heck,
- 19:11Speaker 1: he got his team to the Super Bowl when he
- 19:13Speaker 1: was quarterback for the Rams. So I think Jared Goff
- 19:16Speaker 1: could win.
- 19:16Speaker 5: A Super Bowl. Yeah, yeah.
- 19:17Speaker 3: You just wonder if their defense can hold up statistically.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Houston, do they have a Super Bowl winning quarterback?
- 19:22Speaker 3: They probably do not. We saw that last year.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Jacksonville?
- 19:26Speaker 3: Can I throw a number out for you real quick?
- 19:28Speaker 1: Hang on, let me finish this. Jacksonville?
- 19:31Speaker 3: Jacksonville could, yes.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Okay.
- 19:33Speaker 1: You think they've got a quarterback? You think Trevor Lawrence
- 19:35Speaker 1: is good enough to win them? I'm going to laugh
- 19:39Speaker 1: when I say this. The Chargers don't. I mean, Justin
- 19:41Speaker 1: Herbert seems to have the skill set, but he's not
- 19:43Speaker 1: a Super Bowl winning quarterback. I can't win big games.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Right now I can't win any games.
- 19:47Speaker 3: You've got to win a postseason game first, right?
- 19:49Speaker 1: Minnesota doesn't have a quarterback that can win a Super Bowl.
- 19:52Speaker 1: They've got a defense that could get you there, though.
- 19:54Speaker 1: And Tennessee, I don't think, does. So when you do
- 19:57Speaker 1: the NFL, it's way easier just to say, does this
- 20:00Speaker 1: team currently have the quarterback that can win a Super Bowl?
- 20:03Speaker 1: All right, on the NFL.
- 20:06Speaker 3: No, I was just going to throw out and see
- 20:08Speaker 3: if you could answer this trivia question on the fly.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Is there a prize?
- 20:12Speaker 3: Whatever you want, Brown.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Okay. Here we go.
- 20:15Speaker 3: I am going to combine, and the NFL conversation is
- 20:18Speaker 3: what sparked this because I meant to do it today
- 20:20Speaker 3: on the fly. Just see if you can do this.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Of all starting FBS quarterbacks and all starting NFL quarterbacks,
- 20:27Speaker 3: only one has yet to throw an interception all year.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Of all starting NFL and college quarterbacks, there's one quarterback
- 20:36Speaker 1: that hasn't thrown an interception?
- 20:37Speaker 5: Yep.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Immediately, I would be inclined to guess Mensah. Although, the
- 20:44Speaker 1: fact that you include the NFL tells me there's an
- 20:46Speaker 1: NFL quarterback that hasn't thrown an interception, which is pretty
- 20:48Speaker 1: remarkable midway through the season.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'm talking about full-time starters that have played
- 20:53Speaker 3: every game.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Yeah, full-time starters that have played every game. On the
- 20:55Speaker 1: college level, I would either want to say Mensah or Atkinson.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Has not thrown an interception. On the NFL level, gosh,
- 21:04Speaker 1: I don't even know where I'd go. I have no
- 21:12Speaker 1: earthly idea.
- 21:12Speaker 5: Who is it?
- 21:13Speaker 3: Mensah has thrown one, by the way.
- 21:15Speaker 6: He's thrown one?
- 21:16Speaker 5: Okay.
- 21:16Speaker 1: How many has Atkinson thrown? Has he thrown more than
- 21:18Speaker 1: I think? He has thrown two. Two?
- 21:19Speaker 5: Okay.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I didn't think he had thrown many.
- 21:22Speaker 3: Jared Goff is your answer.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Detroit Lions, Jared Goff. In the NFL, you would have
- 21:25Speaker 1: guessed college on that one. I think I would have.
- 21:28Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I probably would have.
- 21:30Speaker 1: I mean, you're throwing in bigger windows in college than
- 21:31Speaker 1: you are in the NFL. So Jared Goff is the
- 21:33Speaker 1: only quarterback in football that has thrown a pick.
- 21:35Speaker 3: 14 touchdowns, no picks.
- 21:38Speaker 1: That's pretty efficient.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Yeah, very efficient.
- 21:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:40Speaker 3: I mean, but, you know, Mensa, 22 touchdowns, only one pick. Atkinson,
- 21:46Speaker 3: 24 touchdowns, only two picks.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Pretty efficient on both of those guys, too.
- 21:50Speaker 5: It really is.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Ball barely touches the ground for either one of them.
- 21:54Speaker 1: In college football, I could only find three that I
- 21:57Speaker 1: would say are major enough programs that you would think,
- 22:00Speaker 1: how have they not won a championship? And one of
- 22:02Speaker 1: these is borderline. They've only been major for 20 years now.
- 22:05Speaker 1: You're talking about Oregon's got to be one of them.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Oregon is one of them. But there were only three
- 22:09Speaker 1: I could find that are major enough, you could say,
- 22:11Speaker 1: how have they not won a modern-day national championship? Texas
- 22:16Speaker 1: A & M. They won one. They claim one in 39.
- 22:20Speaker 1: So when I say modern day, we're at least going
- 22:21Speaker 1: to go after World War II. Texas A & M, Oregon,
- 22:25Speaker 1: and I don't know if I would call Utah. I
- 22:27Speaker 1: don't know if I'd put Utah in this category or not.
- 22:29Speaker 1: They've never won one. But I don't know if I
- 22:31Speaker 1: would put them in a category where I would say,
- 22:33Speaker 1: you look at that program like, how have they not
- 22:35Speaker 1: won a national championship?
- 22:37Speaker 3: I do think that they're very, very new money. And
- 22:41Speaker 3: not even new money is like we. I don't think
- 22:43Speaker 3: people ever take them seriously as a big-time program.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Utah?
- 22:47Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, I agree with you.
- 22:48Speaker 1: And maybe it's just because you.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Jump around from Mountain West, Pac-12.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Yeah, they've been in a bunch of conferences down to
- 22:55Speaker 1: the Big 12 recently, yeah. But A & M is probably– well,
- 23:00Speaker 1: Oregon's a pretty big head-scratcher. A & M and Oregon
- 23:02Speaker 1: probably are the same.
- 23:04Speaker 3: A & M, historically and based on resources– But if
- 23:09Speaker 3: you want to know what Oregon was lining up for
- 23:12Speaker 3: over the last quarter of a century, to not have
- 23:14Speaker 3: one is pretty crazy.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I think if I just took you back to
- 23:18Speaker 1: probably the 2010 National Championship game, Auburn and Oregon playing
- 23:22Speaker 1: in the desert, and told you... We're going to play 16,
- 23:26Speaker 1: 17 more college football seasons, and Oregon's not going to
- 23:28Speaker 1: win a national championship. You're going to be like, you're crazy.
- 23:30Speaker 3: It's been hard to believe.
- 23:31Speaker 1: This team is on a trajectory to win one.
- 23:34Speaker 3: By the way, this Oregon team in 2010 is not
- 23:37Speaker 3: going to be in the Pac-12. They're going to go
- 23:38Speaker 3: to the Big Ten.
- 23:38Speaker 1: That's even crazier.
- 23:40Speaker 3: And by the way, Indiana, which you never see on
- 23:42Speaker 3: TV because it's the worst– statistic program in the history
- 23:47Speaker 3: of college football is going to win one and maybe
- 23:49Speaker 3: win back to back.
- 23:50Speaker 1: No none of that makes any sense it doesn't make
- 23:53Speaker 1: any sense with A & M and I have harped
- 23:54Speaker 1: on this there's no program that has won more games
- 23:57Speaker 1: and has less to show for it than Texas A &
- 23:59Speaker 1: M they've barely won conference championships much less a national
- 24:01Speaker 1: yeah it's crazy and they've never really been close to
- 24:04Speaker 1: a national championship in our lifetime have they I can't
- 24:06Speaker 1: think of a time.
- 24:07Speaker 3: I mean, the closest I would say, personally, was 2011,
- 24:11Speaker 3: where they ended up being, no, was it 12?
- 24:13Speaker 1: 12, where Manziel beat Alabama, they beat Oklahoma in the
- 24:17Speaker 1: Cotton Bowl.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Yeah, they ended up going to.
- 24:19Speaker 1: The Cotton Bowl. Still a two-loss team, though.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I think at that point they were probably the
- 24:22Speaker 3: second-best team.
- 24:23Speaker 1: They were a two-loss team, but they were probably... Because,
- 24:25Speaker 1: you know, they were better than Notre Dame. Alabama, Georgia,
- 24:28Speaker 1: and Texas A & M were probably your best teams
- 24:30Speaker 1: in the country that year. At the end of the year.
- 24:32Speaker 3: Yeah, to me, that would have been the close. Like
- 24:34Speaker 3: a 12-team playoff, nobody would have wanted to play Johnny Mendoza.
- 24:37Speaker 1: No, they got hot late. Yeah, they got hot late.
- 24:39Speaker 3: And so that is kind of the advantage of having
- 24:41Speaker 3: an extended playoff when you look at teams like Texas
- 24:44Speaker 3: A & M and the way they were playing.
- 24:45Speaker 1: It's just remarkable what all you have at Texas A &
- 24:49Speaker 1: M resource-wise, facility-wise. player availability wise, and you've never won
- 24:55Speaker 1: a national championship. It just, it really makes no sense.
- 24:58Speaker 1: It does not. It does not. Unless we just overvalue
- 25:02Speaker 1: all those things, which maybe we do.
- 25:04Speaker 4: All right.
- 25:04Speaker 1: We've got a lot to get to. Mick Gillespie is
- 25:06Speaker 1: going to jump in with us a little bit. Mick's
- 25:08Speaker 1: a friend of the show. We'll talk some college football
- 25:10Speaker 1: with him and, um, continue. We're going to, we're going
- 25:14Speaker 1: to try to bracket a crazy playoff and also, um,
- 25:19Speaker 1: Paint the chaos. I mean, it seems like every weekend
- 25:22Speaker 1: we get chaos. So I'm going to throw some games
- 25:24Speaker 1: at you and we'll go how close to chaos can
- 25:26Speaker 1: we get with these games. That is all coming up
- 25:29Speaker 1: on the next round. It is on Sporting State and
- 25:32Speaker 1: it is presented by Hard Rock Bet.
- 25:36Speaker 6: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 25:37Speaker 5: This is Coach's chair.
- 25:38Speaker 4: What?
- 25:38Speaker 5: We protect Coach's chair the way Hard Rock Bet protects
- 25:41Speaker 5: Coach's account. Hard Rock Bet keeps Coach's info safe.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Hard Rock Bet keeps Coach's money safe.
- 25:46Speaker 5: And we keep Coach safe. Hey, fellas. Coach.
- 25:54Speaker 1: How about that protection?
- 25:55Speaker 3: Can I grab a wing?
- 25:56Speaker 5: Coach's wings.
- 25:57Speaker 6: I guess I'll sit on the ground.
- 25:58Speaker 5: That's where Coach puts his feet.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Safe and secure betting from the very first tap. Great
- 26:02Speaker 1: to meet you, Coach.
- 26:02Speaker 5: It was Coach's pleasure.
- 26:04Speaker 1: All right, we continue on the next round on Sporting State.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Presented by Hard Rock Bet, our buddy Mick Gillespie is in. Mick,
- 26:10Speaker 1: for those of you watching us on Sporting State and
- 26:12Speaker 1: Daily Wire, Mick does everything. Some shows on our platform
- 26:15Speaker 1: at Next Round Live. The Last Call with Alabama National
- 26:18Speaker 1: Championship quarterback Jay Coker and also does postgame after the
- 26:22Speaker 1: Alabama games, which he will not have this Saturday.
- 26:24Speaker 5: What is up?
- 26:25Speaker 1: How are you, Mick? Yeah, it's good.
- 26:26Speaker 7: I mean, that means I get a Saturday off.
- 26:28Speaker 1: That's right, a Saturday off. You can sleep in.
- 26:30Speaker 3: You got that wet mullet right now.
- 26:33Speaker 7: It's all one length, pal. But mullets are cool, pal.
- 26:36Speaker 7: Mullets are cool now.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Are mullets back in?
- 26:39Speaker 7: They're in, yeah, for the young kids.
- 26:40Speaker 6: They are.
- 26:41Speaker 3: If you go to any of these, like, if you
- 26:43Speaker 3: go to Nashville, like, every guy up there has got
- 26:46Speaker 3: a mullet and a mustache.
- 26:48Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 26:48Speaker 1: A lot of the guys have the shaved or the
- 26:50Speaker 1: lower shaved side and the thicker mullet.
- 26:53Speaker 7: Yeah, I had one of those.
- 26:54Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 26:55Speaker 7: Truth be told, when I got into the KAs as
- 26:57Speaker 7: a college student in Alabama, they were like, you've got
- 27:00Speaker 7: to cut your mullet. I didn't even know what a
- 27:01Speaker 7: mullet was. I played lacrosse, and that's how we.
- 27:04Speaker 5: All had our hair.
- 27:05Speaker 1: I was like, all right, yeah, cut it. And you're
- 27:07Speaker 1: not like some Milton Hillbilly. You grew up in Maryland.
- 27:09Speaker 1: He's a carpetbag. Yeah, he's a Yankee.
- 27:11Speaker 5: One of a kind, right?
- 27:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:16Speaker 7: And everybody had them, and then the term mullet just
- 27:19Speaker 7: insulted a great style, you know, a business on top,
- 27:24Speaker 7: party on the back.
- 27:24Speaker 3: I told this story when we were, so it'll be
- 27:27Speaker 3: maybe a month ago this coming Friday, we were in Innisfree.
- 27:32Speaker 3: And we were doing the show, and Trip Rogers came on.
- 27:34Speaker 3: And you know Trip well because you do your show
- 27:36Speaker 3: from there.
- 27:36Speaker 5: All the time.
- 27:36Speaker 3: But when I first met him, he was a lacrosse
- 27:38Speaker 3: guy from Maryland with a mullet.
- 27:40Speaker 7: I know. I've known him for 30 years. Shout out
- 27:43Speaker 7: to Snead. I was supposed to do the post-game show
- 27:46Speaker 7: there on Saturday. I ended up doing it at your house.
- 27:48Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 27:50Speaker 7: Go to NS3 and spend a lot of money.
- 27:52Speaker 1: I'm sure there's a story behind that, how it ended
- 27:54Speaker 1: up at NS3, but it stayed at S's house.
- 27:55Speaker 7: I was going to sit in the box, and my
- 27:57Speaker 7: buddy gave one of his kids and wanted to go,
- 28:00Speaker 7: and it's like, what are you going to do? I
- 28:02Speaker 7: don't care about that. I like watching them on TV.
- 28:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:05Speaker 1: I'm kind of with you on that. Hey, we're going
- 28:08Speaker 1: to talk about some chaos this weekend, and we'll get
- 28:10Speaker 1: to Bama LSU with Mick in here as well. But
- 28:13Speaker 1: before we do that, we were just talking about buying

- 29:19Speaker 1: every weekend, and I find it fun. Like, I enjoy
- 29:22Speaker 1: the chaos. Now, to that point. See, I don't think Mick,
- 29:26Speaker 1: Mick's an old school band. I know what he wants.
- 29:29Speaker 3: You know, I saw our buddy Brian Passick the other
- 29:31Speaker 3: night who does color for Alabama basketball. Former Alabama point guard.
- 29:35Speaker 3: And he's like, we were discussing today's college football. He's like,
- 29:38Speaker 3: I don't like it. I like the traditional.
- 29:39Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 29:40Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, I'm sure you do. You like winning
- 29:41Speaker 1: every week.
- 29:42Speaker 3: You like being up 35-3 at halftime every week, and
- 29:45Speaker 3: that's what you like, right?
- 29:46Speaker 7: I love that. If it's us ahead. There's something to
- 29:50Speaker 7: be said for excellence, and we saw a lot of that.
- 29:54Speaker 7: It's been cool watching the Saban documentary. It kind of
- 29:57Speaker 7: brings me back to, The days when we had Shula
- 30:00Speaker 7: and it was like this, this really feels like the Shula.
- 30:03Speaker 5: It does.
- 30:04Speaker 2: It does.
- 30:04Speaker 1: It feels a lot like the Shula.
- 30:06Speaker 5: It was nothing like this.
- 30:07Speaker 1: How does this feel like Shula?
- 30:08Speaker 7: The inconsistencies week to week.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Alabama is number 10 in the country. But Shula didn't.
- 30:13Speaker 7: Have– he had to deal with all the restrictions and scholarships.
- 30:17Speaker 7: But it was just– we're just inconsistent.
- 30:19Speaker 1: They lose two games a year now. They're number 10
- 30:22Speaker 1: in the country.
- 30:23Speaker 7: Every time I see Coach DeBoer on without his hat on,
- 30:26Speaker 7: it reminds me of– of Coach DuBose. Oh, my God.
- 30:30Speaker 5: What are we doing here?
- 30:31Speaker 1: What are we doing?
- 30:34Speaker 3: No, this is what you– have you not talked to
- 30:37Speaker 3: Alabama fans lately? I have, but this is insanity. Mike DuBose–
- 30:40Speaker 3: They look alike. Mike DuBose didn't know there was a
- 30:42Speaker 3: top ten. Mike Shula only visited the top ten.
- 30:45Speaker 7: He won an SEC championship game in 99.
- 30:47Speaker 1: That is a good point.
- 30:48Speaker 3: Okay, can you just give me this real quick?
- 30:50Speaker 7: All right.
- 30:50Speaker 3: Because you talk about them every week, and this is
- 30:53Speaker 3: the team you follow.
- 30:54Speaker 5: Right.
- 30:54Speaker 3: Year one of DuBose to year two, was the year
- 30:56Speaker 3: two team better?
- 30:59Speaker 7: I mean, look, I think he's a good coach. I'm
- 31:01Speaker 7: not trying to fire him or anything.
- 31:03Speaker 1: I know, but can you just answer that question? Year
- 31:06Speaker 1: one to year two, year two better?
- 31:08Speaker 7: I think pretty much the same to me.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Okay.
- 31:11Speaker 3: Well, they did win double-digit games from year one to
- 31:13Speaker 3: year two.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Played for the SEC Championship and went to the playoffs.
- 31:15Speaker 7: But it's the same thing. I mean, it's been about
- 31:17Speaker 7: the same.
- 31:19Speaker 3: So what about last year to this year? Is this
- 31:20Speaker 3: team better?
- 31:22Speaker 7: When they're healthy, you know, yeah. I mean, I think
- 31:23Speaker 7: they're slightly better, but. if they don't run the football,
- 31:29Speaker 7: you can forget about winning any big games.
- 31:31Speaker 5: I agree.
- 31:32Speaker 7: You can just forget about it.
- 31:34Speaker 3: I think it's an unknown right now.
- 31:35Speaker 7: But, I mean, look, when you're 125th in running offense
- 31:40Speaker 7: and then you give your running backs 13 carries for
- 31:43Speaker 7: a game, you're not winning in this conference. I mean,
- 31:45Speaker 7: you can go out west, and I know you've got
- 31:47Speaker 7: the Arizona State hat on. That probably works out there.
- 31:50Speaker 7: In this conference, when you're not balanced, you don't win.
- 31:54Speaker 7: And I guess my biggest gripe is somebody's got to say,
- 31:58Speaker 7: like Saban, you know, he used to say, we're going
- 31:59Speaker 7: to run the ball. We've got to be more balanced.
- 32:01Speaker 7: He pulled his quarterback out of a national championship game
- 32:04Speaker 7: because they weren't able to be balanced. They needed to
- 32:06Speaker 7: throw more. That's the frustrating part for me. You know,
- 32:10Speaker 7: the way that they got destroyed in the games that
- 32:13Speaker 7: they lost last year, looking at the Tennessee game this year,
- 32:16Speaker 7: and then comparing it to Georgia game, they lost the
- 32:18Speaker 7: Georgia game. The officiating was horrible. They probably should have won.
- 32:22Speaker 7: But they ran the football. They tried to run the football,
- 32:25Speaker 7: and they didn't. Now, I know they got some injuries
- 32:27Speaker 7: on the offensive line, but when you give your running
- 32:28Speaker 7: backs 13 carries, why even have them? You know, Shank
- 32:31Speaker 7: was on our postgame show, and, I mean, he is,
- 32:35Speaker 7: you know, they won the Joe Moore Award, right, for
- 32:38Speaker 7: the best offensive line on route to a championship.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Seems like a long time ago.
- 32:41Speaker 7: Yeah, it does, right?
- 32:42Speaker 1: One of the championships.
- 32:43Speaker 7: But he appreciates the run game, right? And it's like
- 32:48Speaker 7: we just give up on it. And they're doing play-action fakes.
- 32:53Speaker 7: And it's like, man, I haven't played football in 30 years,
- 32:56Speaker 7: but I'm not buying that.
- 32:58Speaker 1: What are you faking to?
- 33:00Speaker 7: What are you faking for the 13 runs that you're
- 33:02Speaker 7: going to call? That's the problem I have with Alabama. Now,
- 33:05Speaker 7: I think that the injuries have been a part of this,
- 33:08Speaker 7: but I think it's been the same thing all three years. Like,
- 33:13Speaker 7: you're really good one week, and then the next week, like,
- 33:16Speaker 7: you beat Georgia, and then you lose to Vanderbilt. You know, like,
- 33:20Speaker 7: they've got to be more consistent. I think that's why
- 33:23Speaker 7: I feel like they're good and they're a top team.
- 33:25Speaker 7: They're not a national championship contender until they run the football.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Mick, thank you for the call. Let's go to the legend.
- 33:32Speaker 7: So how do you feel, though, coming out of the bye?
- 33:36Speaker 3: Tell him how many games that Kalen DeBoer, and we've
- 33:39Speaker 3: got this fact-checked multiple times.
- 33:40Speaker 1: Multiple times.
- 33:41Speaker 3: How many times has Kalen DeBoer coached out of a bye?
- 33:44Speaker 1: Eight times. What do you think his record is?
- 33:46Speaker 7: 7-1. 8-0. 8-0. Okay, we'll find out.
- 33:51Speaker 3: How do you feel coming out of this bye, though?
- 33:53Speaker 3: Going to Baton Rouge, a team that seems to be
- 33:55Speaker 3: red hot right now in LSU.
- 33:57Speaker 7: Yeah, I feel bad about it. I mean, and it
- 34:00Speaker 7: has to do with injuries as much as coaching, right? Like,
- 34:03Speaker 7: first off, losing Delghetti at center has been terrible. And
- 34:07Speaker 7: then you go back and watch the film and it's like,
- 34:10Speaker 7: you know, they're making the right mic calls. You know,
- 34:12Speaker 7: guys are blocking the wrong direction. Like, It's been tough
- 34:16Speaker 7: to replace him at center, and that's such an important position.
- 34:19Speaker 7: He's done such a good job. Sanders is out now.
- 34:22Speaker 7: So you've got third-string guys on the offensive line. That
- 34:25Speaker 7: worries me.
- 34:26Speaker 1: That's one reason you can't run, by the way. It's
- 34:29Speaker 1: not the only reason, but it is one reason.
- 34:31Speaker 7: But the other reason is that you didn't try. 13
- 34:34Speaker 7: carries to your backs.
- 34:35Speaker 1: You're talking about in the Texas A & M game?
- 34:38Speaker 7: In any of these. The Tennessee game, Texas A & M.
- 34:42Speaker 1: Tennessee was more of a head-scratcher.
- 34:43Speaker 7: Look at the way that Bama's won this year, though.
- 34:46Speaker 7: At the beginning of the season, when they were playing
- 34:47Speaker 7: their best, they beat Kentucky, which right now is a
- 34:50Speaker 7: great win. It's their best win right now. But, I mean, like,
- 34:55Speaker 7: they ran the ball in the second half. You know,
- 34:56Speaker 7: you've got to be committed to it and balanced. But
- 35:01Speaker 7: I feel like this LSU game, I mean, Lane Kiffin,
- 35:05Speaker 7: he's probably been planning for this for a month now.
- 35:08Speaker 7: It's going to be a tough game. I would love
- 35:10Speaker 7: for DeBoer to be 9-0.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Hard Rock Bet does have an established.
- 35:16Speaker 3: Number out for Alabama LSU.
- 35:18Speaker 1: Two and a half?
- 35:19Speaker 3: It's a little higher than I thought. LSU, four and
- 35:22Speaker 3: a half. That's a big number. That's a big number.
- 35:24Speaker 1: That might be good, though. Well, there are a lot
- 35:27Speaker 1: of people like you that I don't know.
- 35:29Speaker 3: Total of 52 and a half.
- 35:30Speaker 1: There are a lot of people right now, after Saturday,
- 35:33Speaker 1: that think LSU is the best team in the SEC,
- 35:35Speaker 1: maybe the best in the nation. Now, I'm not in
- 35:37Speaker 1: that group.
- 35:38Speaker 5: Right.
- 35:39Speaker 1: They look good, but they look good at Auburn. I
- 35:40Speaker 1: think it's close. But here's the weird, just real quick
- 35:44Speaker 1: on LSU. That Auburn win at Georgia artificially reset what
- 35:49Speaker 1: we think about Auburn. Right. And what we thought about
- 35:53Speaker 1: Auburn coming out of that Georgia win was not real.
- 35:56Speaker 1: It was not real. And LSU goes and beats Auburn.
- 36:00Speaker 5: And we're like, whew.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Well, that was so impressive. They just beat the team
- 36:03Speaker 1: coming off a win over Georgia. Well, if you take
- 36:05Speaker 1: the Georgia game out of it, that LSU win at
- 36:07Speaker 1: Auburn really doesn't blow you away as much as it did. Now,
- 36:10Speaker 1: it's still a nice win. I don't want to take
- 36:12Speaker 1: anything away. They were efficient. Their offense looked very good.
- 36:15Speaker 1: Their defense played very well. But I do think it
- 36:18Speaker 1: was artificially– boosted by what Auburn had done to shock
- 36:23Speaker 1: the world in Athens the week before.
- 36:24Speaker 7: We went out with one of your friends, and he's like,
- 36:26Speaker 7: what's your pick for this week? And I was like,
- 36:28Speaker 7: I'd put the house on LSU to beat Auburn. I
- 36:31Speaker 7: know Auburn's better.
- 36:32Speaker 1: No, I thought LSU was going to win the game.
- 36:33Speaker 7: But, I mean, that was an easy bet to me.
- 36:36Speaker 7: The problem that I have with this matchup, if I'm Alabama,
- 36:40Speaker 7: is a couple things. Now, one thing that Alabama has
- 36:42Speaker 7: on their side is, for whatever reason, we've had the voodoo.
- 36:46Speaker 7: curse on them down there.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Alabama does not lose in Baton Rouge.
- 36:49Speaker 7: It's been great. I've been down there. Their fans are
- 36:53Speaker 7: obnoxious and fun. Sometimes rude, but accommodating. It's a crazy atmosphere.
- 37:00Speaker 7: And Bama's found ways to win even with not great teams, right?
- 37:05Speaker 7: And that's been going on since Bear Bryant. But the
- 37:09Speaker 7: problem that I look at is that Alabama can't run
- 37:11Speaker 7: the ball and LSU stops the run. And when Bama's
- 37:15Speaker 7: played these elite defenses, which is two, they put so
- 37:19Speaker 7: much pressure on the quarterback. They beat Alabama up front,
- 37:22Speaker 7: they're in the backfield, and then they don't give Keelan
- 37:24Speaker 7: a whole lot of time. I felt like Texas A &
- 37:27Speaker 7: M wasn't able to get the pressure on the quarterback
- 37:30Speaker 7: that Tennessee and Georgia got, and I'm afraid that LSU's
- 37:33Speaker 7: going to be able to do that. And then, you know,
- 37:36Speaker 7: when you run the ball 13 times, you know... And
- 37:40Speaker 7: I'm not counting when your quarterback's running for his life.
- 37:42Speaker 1: Yeah, you're talking about running because people in the chat
- 37:44Speaker 1: are like, we have more carries than that against Tennessee.
- 37:46Speaker 7: Yeah, but I'm not talking about that.
- 37:47Speaker 1: I think the running backs had 14 carries. Yeah, the
- 37:48Speaker 1: running backs.
- 37:49Speaker 7: Not the quarterback, you know, back there and there's three
- 37:52Speaker 7: guys in his face and he takes off. I'm talking
- 37:54Speaker 7: about straight handoffs. Part of this is on Keelan too,
- 37:58Speaker 7: you know, like the RPO game. He's got to make
- 38:01Speaker 7: a decision. If you watch our show with Jay Coker,
- 38:03Speaker 7: you know, he'll talk about this sometimes as a former
- 38:06Speaker 7: quarterback that, you don't have a whole lot of time
- 38:09Speaker 7: to assess what's going on. But you've got to look
- 38:12Speaker 7: up and see. And if there's five yards with a carrier,
- 38:15Speaker 7: you've got to throw it, pull it back.
- 38:16Speaker 1: And throw it.
- 38:16Speaker 7: You don't have a whole lot of time to do that,
- 38:18Speaker 7: and you've got to assess that. And Keelan, I think,
- 38:20Speaker 7: is going to be a great quarterback, but I don't
- 38:22Speaker 7: think he's there yet. They've got to hand the ball
- 38:24Speaker 7: off more, whether that's Grubb calling straight runs or Keelan's
- 38:28Speaker 7: RPO game. But LSU's done a great job of stopping
- 38:31Speaker 7: the run. It's going to be loud down there. You
- 38:34Speaker 7: look at the way that Bama played against Tennessee, which
- 38:37Speaker 7: was dismal. and the first half against Kentucky on the road.
- 38:41Speaker 7: So I think that this one's going to be a
- 38:43Speaker 7: tough game, and then every time I say that, the
- 38:45Speaker 7: other team wins.
- 38:46Speaker 3: 42 all-time matchups, Alabama, LSU, and Baton Rouge. What do
- 38:50Speaker 3: you think the record is?
- 38:51Speaker 8: 42.
- 38:51Speaker 1: I mean, this is going to sound insane. I'm going
- 38:56Speaker 1: to say Alabama's 32-10.
- 38:57Speaker 7: Yeah, I think it's somewhere in there. I'm going to
- 39:00Speaker 7: say 35 wins. Wow.
- 39:01Speaker 2: 30-10-2.
- 39:01Speaker 1: 30 wins, 10 losses. I didn't remember any ties. Two ties, yeah.
- 39:10Speaker 1: It's gone way back. Before you guys did a show.
- 39:14Speaker 3: Well, they've won seven of the last nine in Baton Rouge, too.
- 39:16Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 39:17Speaker 1: I mean, but growing up, I remember Alabama didn't lose
- 39:20Speaker 1: in Baton Rouge from like 1969 until... 2000, whenever Saban
- 39:23Speaker 1: was there.
- 39:24Speaker 2: 2000, yeah.
- 39:24Speaker 7: I was at the game.
- 39:25Speaker 1: 2000, let's see, 98. I think it was 2001, yeah.
- 39:30Speaker 1: was the first time.
- 39:31Speaker 7: Yeah who knew who Saban was at the time I
- 39:34Speaker 7: just they asked him in the press conference when he
- 39:36Speaker 7: was at LSU and he's like we don't believe in
- 39:38Speaker 7: any of that stuff I wasn't.
- 39:40Speaker 1: Around back there you know sign of things to come
- 39:42Speaker 1: they whooped us yeah sign of things to come um.
- 39:45Speaker 3: Do you remember the first time you covered Saban in
- 39:48Speaker 3: a press conference yes.
- 39:48Speaker 7: Yes Yes, because I worked for Crimson Tide Sports Network
- 39:51Speaker 7: when he got his job.
- 39:52Speaker 5: Oh, yeah?
- 39:53Speaker 7: Yeah, and so he would, and when he, tell you this,
- 39:57Speaker 7: I watched the documentary, and I remember when he first
- 39:59Speaker 7: got there, I was told not to try to get
- 40:02Speaker 7: a picture with him or approach him. He didn't want
- 40:03Speaker 7: to talk to anybody.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Don't look him in the eyes.
- 40:05Speaker 7: It was like that kind of thing, you know, and
- 40:07Speaker 7: I thought about, like, people said that about Martin Lawrence,
- 40:09Speaker 7: you know, like, you would get like, Hey, Martin Lawrence.
- 40:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:13Speaker 7: I heard this on Howard Stern.
- 40:15Speaker 1: You don't look Martin Lawrence in the eyes.
- 40:17Speaker 7: I don't know if it's true, but that's what they
- 40:19Speaker 7: were saying on Howard Stern.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 40:21Speaker 7: So, you know, I was like, well, I just want
- 40:23Speaker 7: to win. I mean, we were so bad for so long.
- 40:25Speaker 7: I'm like, I don't care who comes and coaches this team.
- 40:28Speaker 7: But when the, the tornadoes came, you know, I took
- 40:32Speaker 7: off of work and volunteered with the team, you know,
- 40:35Speaker 7: like through CTSN and we were on golf carts going
- 40:37Speaker 7: around and stuff. And then, I just think that changed everybody.
- 40:41Speaker 7: It seemed like maybe he was just more open. Oh,
- 40:43Speaker 7: people say he was different after the 2011 tornado. I
- 40:46Speaker 7: feel like that just from being around there. But what's
- 40:50Speaker 7: interesting is that you watch the documentary and he's so unsure.
- 40:55Speaker 7: And Coker was like, I wish I would have known
- 40:57Speaker 7: that because they just had no clue that the guy
- 40:59Speaker 7: actually could be could cry and could be emotional or would,
- 41:03Speaker 7: you know, twist over decisions. So he's a human.
- 41:07Speaker 1: I will never forget the first time I met him. 100%
- 41:09Speaker 1: remember the first time I met him. So shortly after
- 41:11Speaker 1: he got the job, this is before we were together.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Me and Dunaway are doing a show. Lance is doing
- 41:16Speaker 1: a show by himself. And Doug Walker, who I just saw.
- 41:18Speaker 7: I know Doug.
- 41:19Speaker 1: Yeah, Doug's with Florida State now. We saw him at
- 41:20Speaker 1: the Auburn-Florida State game, basketball game a couple weeks ago.
- 41:24Speaker 1: But Doug was running the media relations at Alabama. And
- 41:27Speaker 1: he calls Dunaway, and he's like, you know, Coach Saban
- 41:31Speaker 1: wants to meet some of the local media. If you
- 41:32Speaker 1: guys want to come over, we'll give you an hour.
- 41:35Speaker 1: And you can do an interview, just, you know, chat
- 41:37Speaker 1: with them off the record, whatever you want to do. So, yeah,
- 41:40Speaker 1: let's go over there. So we drive to Tuscaloosa.
- 41:42Speaker 5: We show up.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Doug meets us at the football building. We walk in.
- 41:45Speaker 1: He walks us up to Nick Saban's office. We go
- 41:46Speaker 1: in the office. And behind the desk is Terry Saban.
- 41:50Speaker 1: And she's got crap all over the desk.
- 41:51Speaker 8: Oh, nice.
- 41:52Speaker 1: Like fabric samples and all these books where you flip.
- 41:58Speaker 1: Shit he doesn't want to deal with. And she was.
- 42:02Speaker 1: Guys i mean she was like awesome so over the
- 42:05Speaker 1: top yeah and introduces herself ask you know jim about
- 42:08Speaker 1: his family asked me about my family how long have
- 42:11Speaker 1: you been in alabama you know i mean just could
- 42:13Speaker 1: not have been nicer and then the door opens and
- 42:15Speaker 1: nick saban walks in and the first thing he says
- 42:18Speaker 1: i mean not not hey guys how y'all doing the
- 42:20Speaker 1: first thing he says he looks at terry saban he
- 42:21Speaker 1: goes and it's so dead pan dry you almost had
- 42:25Speaker 1: a strain to hear him he goes Am I ever
- 42:27Speaker 1: going to get my desk back? That's all he said
- 42:32Speaker 1: to her. Looked right through you guys. He looks at
- 42:34Speaker 1: his wife and goes, Am I ever going to get
- 42:36Speaker 1: my desk back? And then he turns and goes, How
- 42:38Speaker 1: you doing? Just shakes her hand.
- 42:40Speaker 3: There was something intimidating about him, though. I remember the
- 42:43Speaker 3: first time I did an interview, it was SEC Media
- 42:48Speaker 3: Days at the Winfrey. And it was just one of
- 42:51Speaker 3: those we got lucky to grab him, and it happened
- 42:53Speaker 3: to be during my solo show.
- 42:55Speaker 6: Oh, yeah, fantastic.
- 42:55Speaker 1: And so he sat down with me one-on-one.
- 42:57Speaker 3: I wish you were right in the middle of four down.
- 42:59Speaker 3: And it was, yeah, I mean, I'm sure we were
- 43:00Speaker 3: talking about Chick Brackett or something. But there were a
- 43:03Speaker 3: million cameras just, you know, everybody was hovering over him.
- 43:06Speaker 1: And I don't even remember what we talked about, but,
- 43:09Speaker 1: you know. No, but he was, I mean, he was
- 43:12Speaker 1: kind of cold and guarded that day, but he was
- 43:14Speaker 1: new on the job. He didn't know who he was
- 43:15Speaker 1: talking to.
- 43:16Speaker 4: Yeah, right.
- 43:17Speaker 1: Um, another funny story from that is we go into
- 43:19Speaker 1: the conference room, which is right off the coach's office
- 43:21Speaker 1: at the time. They've redesigned the building then, but you
- 43:23Speaker 1: walk straight out of the coach's office into the locker room, uh,
- 43:26Speaker 1: into the conference room. So coach Saban walks on in
- 43:28Speaker 1: and we follow him in. And there was one wall
- 43:31Speaker 1: had a whiteboard on it with the depth chart. And
- 43:34Speaker 1: one wall had a whiteboard on it where they're recruiting.
- 43:37Speaker 5: Right.
- 43:37Speaker 3: So that's when Kirby took a picture of it.
- 43:40Speaker 1: So, um, We sit down at this massive, you've seen
- 43:44Speaker 1: it in like the documentaries and all the conference table
- 43:47Speaker 1: where they have the team meetings, the staff meetings. So
- 43:49Speaker 1: we sit down and he sits down for a second
- 43:51Speaker 1: and then he realizes those boards are uncovered. So he says,
- 43:55Speaker 1: give me a second. And he gets up and he
- 43:57Speaker 1: walks over and he flips a switch and it goes
- 44:01Speaker 1: like this screen comes out and covers the boards.
- 44:03Speaker 5: And I didn't.
- 44:04Speaker 1: You know, trying to break the ice. I was like, coach,
- 44:06Speaker 1: I was too dumb to understand what any of that meant.
- 44:09Speaker 1: You didn't have to lower that. And he goes, oh,
- 44:10Speaker 1: I just didn't want the screens to buzz while they were.
- 44:13Speaker 1: And I was like, he's trying to make up an
- 44:16Speaker 1: excuse why I lowered the screens. I'm like, no, I
- 44:20Speaker 1: know you didn't want us looking at that.
- 44:21Speaker 5: It was cool.
- 44:23Speaker 7: He came in to an athletic department that had too
- 44:27Speaker 7: many outside voices.
- 44:28Speaker 1: No doubt.
- 44:29Speaker 7: And that was always one of the things that– I
- 44:32Speaker 7: used to call it the viper pit, you know, because
- 44:34Speaker 7: different coaches trying to push for their programs and different
- 44:38Speaker 7: athletic directors doing stuff. I didn't enjoy the time over
- 44:41Speaker 7: there in some aspects just because of the politics. And
- 44:45Speaker 7: when he came in.
- 44:46Speaker 1: Oh, that was done.
- 44:46Speaker 5: Hey, over.
- 44:47Speaker 8: Yep.
- 44:48Speaker 7: And I'm curious to see how it goes for DeBoer
- 44:50Speaker 7: because they went with a completely different personality. Right. Saban
- 44:56Speaker 7: was perfect for that time.
- 44:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:58Speaker 3: Right?
- 44:59Speaker 7: And the way that he shut all that down was by, hey,
- 45:03Speaker 7: I'm not taking a picture with you. I'm here to
- 45:05Speaker 7: coach football.
- 45:05Speaker 1: I'm not going to go speak to Red Elephant Clubs.
- 45:07Speaker 1: I'm not speaking to the, you know.
- 45:10Speaker 7: We all learned how to be successful from watching him
- 45:12Speaker 7: every day. Do you remember the one when they lost–
- 45:16Speaker 7: The guys were selling their textbooks. Yeah, that was Tennessee.
- 45:19Speaker 1: That was 2009 Tennessee. Yeah, it was going into Tennessee.
- 45:21Speaker 3: Because they whipped Tennessee's ass.
- 45:22Speaker 1: Without those books. No, it was 2007 Tennessee.
- 45:25Speaker 7: 2007, and you always hear, you know, you do the
- 45:28Speaker 7: same thing I do, about what was going on and,
- 45:31Speaker 7: you know, this and that with the players. And he
- 45:36Speaker 7: benched those guys, and they lost. And then he had
- 45:38Speaker 7: that speech where he was like, you know, what kind
- 45:40Speaker 7: of program do you have? Does it matter if you win?
- 45:43Speaker 7: Or does it matter if you do it the right way?
- 45:45Speaker 7: And I remember that in particular and saying to myself,
- 45:50Speaker 7: not only does that apply to football, but that applies
- 45:53Speaker 7: to everything you do in your life. What is your
- 45:56Speaker 7: standard going to be? You guys got a show here.
- 45:58Speaker 7: What's your standard going to be on how you're going
- 46:00Speaker 7: to do your show? Are you going to do it
- 46:01Speaker 7: the right way or are you going to try to
- 46:03Speaker 7: take shortcuts? And I felt like that was a pivotal
- 46:06Speaker 7: moment in the program. But I think I learned a
- 46:08Speaker 7: lot about just how to be successful from watching him
- 46:12Speaker 7: And then when you work with the guys that played
- 46:14Speaker 7: for them, not only do they get done playing football
- 46:18Speaker 7: and have success in the game, but they have success
- 46:21Speaker 7: outside of the game. You know, like I did a
- 46:23Speaker 7: show with Mike Johnson. He's, you know, doing radio.
- 46:26Speaker 1: We had him on yesterday.
- 46:27Speaker 5: Yeah, he was on the show yesterday.
- 46:28Speaker 1: We're great friends.
- 46:30Speaker 7: You sit down and talk to him and it's like, man,
- 46:32Speaker 7: if Coach Saban hadn't have taken over, my life would
- 46:35Speaker 7: be totally different.
- 46:36Speaker 1: That's right. He's probably not in the NFL.
- 46:37Speaker 7: Yeah, like, it's not even the NFL. It's the, you know,
- 46:41Speaker 7: how to show up and be a great professional every day.
- 46:44Speaker 7: You know, the things that we have to do, you know,
- 46:47Speaker 7: with this, which is not playing football. We got so
- 46:50Speaker 7: lucky to be around somebody that was just And then
- 46:54Speaker 7: you watch the documentary, and it's like this wizard dude
- 46:57Speaker 7: that's on there telling them.
- 46:58Speaker 1: Oh, I know. That's the wildest part. This is the guy.
- 47:01Speaker 1: This is the guy.
- 47:03Speaker 6: All right.
- 47:03Speaker 3: Do we ever get an age on that guy, by
- 47:05Speaker 3: the way?
- 47:06Speaker 1: I think he is a wizard. I don't think he
- 47:08Speaker 1: has an actual age.
- 47:09Speaker 7: We need a wizard dude for our show.
- 47:11Speaker 6: 226.
- 47:11Speaker 1: All right. We're going to try to paint the chaos
- 47:15Speaker 1: for another week when we return. It is the next round.
- 47:18Speaker 1: We are live on Sport and State, and it's presented
- 47:21Speaker 1: by Hard Rock Bet.
- 47:23Speaker 9: This year, the biggest sportsbook party's getting even bigger.
- 47:27Speaker 1: Hey, there's J-Boy.
- 47:28Speaker 5: Whether you just getting here or you been.
- 47:30Speaker 6: Here, you're not leaving here empty-handed.
- 47:33Speaker 4: Hey, J.
- 47:34Speaker 7: Jimmy Johnson.
- 47:35Speaker 5: Kevin, they know me? Of course.
- 47:38Speaker 9: In this party, everybody's somebody. This season, Hard Rock Bet
- 47:42Speaker 9: has something for everyone.
- 47:43Speaker 3: Plus, new customers bet $ 5 and get up to $ 500
- 47:46Speaker 3: in no-sweat bets.
- 47:47Speaker 1: Hey, that's Fat Joe.
- 47:48Speaker 4: Forget him.
- 47:49Speaker 5: That's J-Boy. Hey, J-Boy.
- 47:51Speaker 6: My name's J-Boy. I got that.
- 47:52Speaker 5: I got that.
- 47:53Speaker 1: As we return on the next round on Sporting State
- 47:55Speaker 1: presented by Hard Rock Bet, we've had a trade in
- 47:57Speaker 1: the NFL. The Tennessee Titans have traded Jeffrey Simmons to
- 48:01Speaker 1: the Chicago Bears for draft picks. That's a big move
- 48:04Speaker 1: for the Bears. That's a big ad for the Bears
- 48:06Speaker 1: in that division, isn't it?
- 48:07Speaker 3: I mean, Simmons is one of the best defensive tackles
- 48:09Speaker 3: in football.
- 48:10Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 48:10Speaker 1: So, heck of a trade. I was trying to see
- 48:14Speaker 1: Chad Whitworth, our friend here with Sporting State, says, Chad Withrow,
- 48:20Speaker 1: why did I say Whitworth? Chad Withrow with Sporting State.
- 48:24Speaker 1: Two first-round picks in return for Simmons.
- 48:27Speaker 7: Nice.
- 48:28Speaker 1: That's pretty good there.
- 48:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, look, the Titans aren't going anywhere fast
- 48:31Speaker 3: right now, and Robert Sala's first year, I don't know how...
- 48:35Speaker 3: I guess I'll be back next year.
- 48:36Speaker 5: I guess.
- 48:37Speaker 1: I like him. I think he's a good coach. He's
- 48:38Speaker 1: just been in some crap spots with the Jets and
- 48:40Speaker 1: the Titans. Clay Travis Law is bringing us this part
- 48:45Speaker 1: of the show.
- 48:46Speaker 3: Yeah, accidents do not wait for a good time. One
- 48:48Speaker 3: bad moment, a wreck, a fall. A doctor who wasn't
- 48:50Speaker 3: paying attention. Suddenly, you're fighting an insurance company that does
- 48:53Speaker 3: this every single day. That's why Clay started Clay Travis Law.
- 48:56Speaker 3: Built firmer on one idea. People deserve someone willing to
- 48:59Speaker 3: pay attention, ask those hard questions, and push back. When
- 49:02Speaker 3: things don't add up, experienced trial attorneys who bring the
- 49:06Speaker 3: fight to corporations and insurers based in Nashville, trusted across
- 49:09Speaker 3: the country. They lead negotiations with honesty, determination and southern grit.
- 49:14Speaker 3: Case evaluation is free. No charge, no pressure, no hassle.
- 49:17Speaker 3: Just tell them your story. Go to Clay Travis Law
- 49:19Speaker 3: dot com. Call 877-222-4444. That's ClayTravisLaw.com. No case too big
- 49:26Speaker 3: or too small.
- 49:27Speaker 1: All right, we're going to run through the Week 9
- 49:29Speaker 1: college football potential upsets, and we'll go DEFCON 1 to 5.
- 49:33Speaker 1: I assume you know this, Mick, but DEFCON 1 is
- 49:37Speaker 1: where the world is ending. DEFCON 5 is total peace.
- 49:39Speaker 1: A lot of people think it's opposite. What are we
- 49:41Speaker 1: right now?
- 49:42Speaker 3: Are we on a 4?
- 49:42Speaker 5: I think we're at 3.
- 49:43Speaker 1: Are we really at 3?
- 49:44Speaker 3: I think so.
- 49:45Speaker 1: I think we've only been four or two times in U.S. history,
- 49:47Speaker 1: if I'm not mistaken. Somebody can fact check me on
- 49:50Speaker 1: that one, but I think that's right.
- 49:51Speaker 3: Wait, so I've got to go back to this. So
- 49:54Speaker 3: five is obviously we're in a great spot.
- 49:56Speaker 1: Oh, no, wait a minute. We've only been two times
- 49:59Speaker 1: in history. Even I screwed it up. So I think
- 50:04Speaker 1: we're on three right now, if I'm not mistaken. So
- 50:07Speaker 1: here we go. So for the favorite, what DEFCON are
- 50:09Speaker 1: we on? Arizona at Texas Tech, early window there.
- 50:13Speaker 3: I think it's DEFCON 1, 100%. For Texas Tech?
- 50:16Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 50:18Speaker 3: I just think the way Arizona's playing right now with Fafita,
- 50:20Speaker 3: this defense, Texas Tech coming off, I don't even know
- 50:25Speaker 3: how to explain it, how Cincinnati did what they did
- 50:27Speaker 3: to them. But Will Hammond, your quarterback for Texas Tech,
- 50:30Speaker 3: and one of the reasons that Brennan Sorsby was getting
- 50:34Speaker 3: paid all this money, Hammond is not thrown for more
- 50:37Speaker 3: than one touchdown in any game this year.
- 50:39Speaker 1: That's a crazy stat. I heard you give that to
- 50:40Speaker 1: Andy Staples yesterday. I'm like, that cannot be real, but
- 50:43Speaker 1: it is.
- 50:43Speaker 3: Yeah, so I think it's DEFCON 5.
- 50:45Speaker 1: I don't know about you.
- 50:46Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm with you on that. I mean, you know,
- 50:47Speaker 7: out in Texas, now that you can pay players, you know,
- 50:50Speaker 7: all those schools are throwing out a bunch of cash.
- 50:53Speaker 7: And Texas Tech had a great roster last year, and
- 50:56Speaker 7: I think the expectations were they were going to win
- 50:58Speaker 7: a national championship. And it almost feels like the Dodgers
- 51:02Speaker 7: versus the Brewers.
- 51:03Speaker 3: Right.
- 51:03Speaker 7: I mean, like all of a sudden you do you
- 51:05Speaker 7: do things the right way. Things come together and it's
- 51:08Speaker 7: got to be if they lose another game.
- 51:11Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 51:12Speaker 5: They're done.
- 51:13Speaker 7: See the post the interview with the coach after the game.
- 51:16Speaker 7: I mean, you could just feel frustrated.
- 51:18Speaker 1: Everybody is Auburn at Ole Miss. Ole Miss is on DEFCON.
- 51:21Speaker 7: What?
- 51:24Speaker 3: I will say they are at DEFCON 4.
- 51:26Speaker 1: Okay, almost perfectly safe.
- 51:28Speaker 3: Yeah, almost perfectly safe. I don't want to say 5
- 51:31Speaker 3: because the last time we did this, Auburn went out
- 51:33Speaker 3: and shocked the world.
- 51:34Speaker 1: Auburn beat Georgia. I don't even know if Auburn Georgia
- 51:38Speaker 1: would have made a list like this that day.
- 51:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, the one kryptonite that Ole Miss has
- 51:42Speaker 3: right now is run defense, but I don't know if
- 51:45Speaker 3: Auburn can run the football.
- 51:46Speaker 1: Yeah, Jeremiah Cobb has been Numbers-wise, disappointing this year, I think.
- 51:49Speaker 3: Yeah, and the thing that scares me, too, is Trinidad
- 51:52Speaker 3: is coming off his worst statistic game as an Ole
- 51:55Speaker 3: Miss Rebel, and he's going against the 14th SEC defense
- 51:59Speaker 3: in passing, giving up over 250 yards per game. I
- 52:02Speaker 3: think this is a spot where he can thrive. He
- 52:04Speaker 3: can put up big numbers. They do get a benefit
- 52:07Speaker 3: of 1145 game. But Ole Miss knows what they've got
- 52:11Speaker 3: to do in this situation, and I think Ole Miss
- 52:14Speaker 3: is going to be fine.
- 52:14Speaker 1: Do you agree, Defcon 4, you think?
- 52:15Speaker 7: Yeah, I think so, because what's weird about this league,
- 52:19Speaker 7: and I don't think Auburn's a bad team. I think
- 52:21Speaker 7: if they were in the ACC, think of their record,
- 52:24Speaker 7: they'd probably be a lot better. But there's so many
- 52:26Speaker 7: really good teams in the conference, they're not going to
- 52:29Speaker 7: go to Ole Miss and win. They didn't play Alabama
- 52:31Speaker 7: in a physical game and kind of get that rat
- 52:35Speaker 7: poison that Georgia had. And I watched the Texas and
- 52:40Speaker 7: Ole Miss game and I thought both of these teams
- 52:42Speaker 7: are really good. And if it was in Oxford, I
- 52:46Speaker 7: think Ole Miss would have won that game. So I
- 52:49Speaker 7: don't think it's going to be close. I think it's
- 52:50Speaker 7: going to look a lot like last week's game against LSU.
- 52:53Speaker 1: Florida and Georgia playing in Atlanta. Cocktail party in Atlanta.
- 52:57Speaker 1: Mercedes-Benz for this year. georgia's on defcon what this is
- 53:01Speaker 1: their first game after auburn it feels like that auburn
- 53:03Speaker 1: game was a month ago but this is georgia they've
- 53:05Speaker 1: had a buy so they're coming off the lost auburn.
- 53:07Speaker 3: I'm gonna go defcon four it would be shocking to
- 53:10Speaker 3: see kirby lose as a three touchdown favorite go into
- 53:13Speaker 3: a buy come back out as a two touchdown favorite
- 53:16Speaker 3: and lose that game.
- 53:17Speaker 1: Just seeing him lose back-to-back games seems improbable.
- 53:19Speaker 3: It does and then second worst pass defense in the
- 53:22Speaker 3: sec is florida gunner stockton I'm sure he has been
- 53:26Speaker 3: kicking himself in the ass for the last couple of
- 53:28Speaker 3: weeks because of the three turnovers. I think he's going
- 53:31Speaker 3: to play well, leads the SEC in completion percentage at 74%.
- 53:35Speaker 3: I think Georgia comes out, and I think the atmosphere
- 53:38Speaker 3: there is going to be great. I could see Florida
- 53:39Speaker 3: hang with him for a half, but I think Georgia
- 53:41Speaker 3: will pull away.
- 53:42Speaker 7: Yeah, I see it really about the same way. I mean,
- 53:45Speaker 7: Florida's been competitive. Really surprising this year. Every time you
- 53:48Speaker 7: think they're going to fall out. They've been the hardest
- 53:50Speaker 7: team to figure out. Lose South Carolina, beat Texas. You
- 53:54Speaker 7: look at this and say, hey, maybe this is the
- 53:56Speaker 7: year where they can put together back-to-back great games. But
- 54:00Speaker 7: the fact that Georgia lost the way that they lost,
- 54:02Speaker 7: they're going to bounce back. Plus, it's in Atlanta. They're
- 54:07Speaker 7: going to have a ton of fans there.
- 54:08Speaker 1: It should be a Georgia home ground.
- 54:09Speaker 3: For Florida to win the game, it's Jaden Baugh. Everybody
- 54:13Speaker 3: talks about the Buster Faulkner offense. It doesn't matter if
- 54:15Speaker 3: it's Philo Or if it's Jones, either one of those
- 54:19Speaker 3: guys starting, Jaden Baugh's got to have a big game.
- 54:21Speaker 3: And this Georgia defense only gives up 90 rushing yards
- 54:24Speaker 3: per game. So I think it's a tough hill to
- 54:27Speaker 3: climb for Florida.
- 54:27Speaker 1: I've got a stat on that real quick.
- 54:30Speaker 3: It would also be pretty amazing for Summerall to win
- 54:32Speaker 3: the first cocktail party against Kirby Smart.
- 54:35Speaker 5: He's good.
- 54:36Speaker 1: He is very good.
- 54:37Speaker 7: I saw him on your show years ago, and he's
- 54:41Speaker 7: legitimately an up-and-comer.
- 54:43Speaker 1: Yeah. I was trying to find this stat from our guy,
- 54:47Speaker 1: Brooks Austin. Oh, here it is. Buster Faulkner has faced
- 54:50Speaker 1: Georgia three times. Three times. So I don't have the
- 54:55Speaker 1: total number of possessions in those games, but three games
- 54:58Speaker 1: in a college, you probably get 12 possessions in a
- 55:00Speaker 1: college game. Is that about average you would think?
- 55:04Speaker 3: Yeah, that's about right.
- 55:05Speaker 1: You probably get 12 possessions. So we're probably talking somewhere
- 55:07Speaker 1: in the number of 36 possessions. 36 possessions, Buster Faulkner
- 55:11Speaker 1: against Georgia. How many three and outs do you think
- 55:13Speaker 1: they have? How many possessions again?
- 55:17Speaker 8: 36.
- 55:17Speaker 1: That's just a guess. I don't know how many it
- 55:19Speaker 1: actually is. 36 is an educated guess.
- 55:23Speaker 3: Three.
- 55:24Speaker 1: It's two.
- 55:25Speaker 7: Wow.
- 55:25Speaker 1: That's pretty impressive. Buster Faulkner knows how to at least
- 55:28Speaker 1: possess the ball against a Kirby Smart glinch human defense.
- 55:31Speaker 2: Right.
- 55:32Speaker 5: Wow.
- 55:32Speaker 3: Yeah, that's impressive.
- 55:33Speaker 1: You've got to get points out of it at some point,
- 55:35Speaker 1: but not a whole lot of three and outs from
- 55:37Speaker 1: a Buster Faulkner offense. And that is the strength of
- 55:39Speaker 1: this Florida team is their offense. We'll pick up on
- 55:41Speaker 1: some more of these. I've got four more we'll get
- 55:43Speaker 1: to in just a little bit, and we'll set a
- 55:45Speaker 1: DEF CON on those. In fact, we may do it
- 55:49Speaker 1: after the break here. Before we go to break, though,
- 55:52Speaker 1: how beloved is Ernie Johnson? Did you see the reaction
- 55:55Speaker 1: last night? I mean, that's crazy.
- 55:57Speaker 7: Yeah, they have the best show on television.
- 55:59Speaker 5: They really do.
- 56:00Speaker 1: Well, their chemistry is just incredible.
- 56:02Speaker 7: But they're not afraid to say what they want to say.
- 56:05Speaker 1: That's correct, yeah.
- 56:05Speaker 7: And in our business, and I've been in it for
- 56:07Speaker 7: a long time, depending on who you work for, you're
- 56:10Speaker 7: not really allowed to give your opinion. You have to
- 56:15Speaker 7: toe a company line. And there's a lot of people
- 56:18Speaker 7: that get hired into jobs that aren't good. And it's
- 56:20Speaker 7: other reasons than talent.
- 56:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:23Speaker 7: And it's frustrating. I mean, I've been in this for
- 56:25Speaker 7: 20 some years. When you see most, a lot of
- 56:28Speaker 7: these shows and you're like, why is that person on there?
- 56:30Speaker 7: And then you figure it out. Those guys are just,
- 56:33Speaker 7: those guys are just legitimately great. They're there because they're
- 56:37Speaker 7: talented and they're there because they're entertaining.
- 56:40Speaker 1: You don't get that a whole lot. But to see Charles,
- 56:42Speaker 1: and we've known Charles a long time, literally choked up
- 56:45Speaker 1: about Ernie announcing his retirement. I mean, I thought that
- 56:48Speaker 1: spoke volumes. And We've heard Charles talk about Ernie. He
- 56:52Speaker 1: loves Ernie Johnson.
- 56:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I think if he would just complete human award
- 56:56Speaker 3: anybody he's ever met in the world, I think he
- 56:59Speaker 3: would go Ernie Johnson.
- 57:00Speaker 1: So congrats to Ernie retiring at 70 at the end
- 57:02Speaker 1: of this year. What an amazing run for that show
- 57:05Speaker 1: and for Ernie in particular. And good news is he's
- 57:06Speaker 1: not completely going away. He said he'd still do March
- 57:08Speaker 1: Madness and stuff like that. I've always liked Ernie Johnson.
- 57:11Speaker 1: He is legitimately a good dude. Never heard a bad
- 57:12Speaker 1: word about him.
- 57:13Speaker 7: No, and I was watching that last night and just,
- 57:17Speaker 7: and the comments that those guys make.
- 57:19Speaker 5: I know.
- 57:20Speaker 7: They were talking about the one guy taking all the shots.
- 57:22Speaker 7: You know, it's just, Such a fun show.
- 57:25Speaker 5: It really is.
- 57:25Speaker 7: It's like a bunch of guys sitting at the bar
- 57:27Speaker 7: talking about sports.
- 57:28Speaker 1: Did you see the bit that was viral this past
- 57:30Speaker 1: week where Charles is trying to name where the player plays,
- 57:33Speaker 1: where he play?
- 57:34Speaker 5: Yeah. Did you see it?
- 57:35Speaker 1: That was hysterical. I mean, like they kept going back.
- 57:40Speaker 1: Atlanta Hawks, it's the Pistons!
- 57:42Speaker 7: It was so good. Did you ever see that when
- 57:46Speaker 7: Shaq was making fun of that guy, JaVale McGee or
- 57:49Speaker 7: whatever his name is? This is going back a ways.
- 57:51Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a while.
- 57:51Speaker 7: That was so funny to me. Yeah.
- 57:54Speaker 1: I don't remember that.
- 57:55Speaker 7: And his mom called Shaq's mom to make him stop
- 57:57Speaker 7: doing it.
- 57:59Speaker 3: It's funny how many current players he has pissed off.
- 58:03Speaker 1: Shaq? More so Barkley, but both of them. Charles doesn't care.
- 58:07Speaker 7: They just show bad highlights like ball bouncing off McGee's
- 58:10Speaker 7: head or stumbling down the court.
- 58:12Speaker 1: All right, we'll do more chaos weekend. We'll go DEFCON
- 58:15Speaker 1: 1 through 5 on several more games and talk some
- 58:17Speaker 1: more college football and NFL. Mick Gillespie hanging with us
- 58:19Speaker 1: for a little bit. Clay Travis coming up. This is
- 58:21Speaker 1: the next round. On Sport and Stay, presented by Hard

- 58:27Speaker 2: You're sitting in my seat.
- 58:29Speaker 6: Hey, Jimmy, we gave you a seat to my new buddy.
- 58:31Speaker 5: What's your name?
- 58:32Speaker 2: Bill.
- 58:32Speaker 3: My new buddy, Bill.
- 58:33Speaker 7: Bill here bet $ 5.
- 58:34Speaker 3: 00 and won $ 3, 300 on Hard Rock Bet.

- 58:41Speaker 5: Maybe I'll come back later.
- 58:44Speaker 1: If you do, bring him water, Jim.
- 58:46Speaker 5: And a hot dog.
- 58:46Speaker 1: You want a hot dog?
- 58:47Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll take a hot dog.
- 58:48Speaker 7: Bill wants a hot dog.
- 58:50Speaker 5: Hot dog for Bill.
- 58:51Speaker 1: Millions of winners and counting.
- 58:53Speaker 5: Don't forget the relish.

- 1:00:08Speaker 1: hanging in studio with us. He's Lance Taylor. I'm Ryan Brown.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: It's the next round. Clay Travis coming up in a
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: few moments. Later in the show, Matt Mosley joins us.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: um i should have told you that i keep forgetting
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: to send lance that text all good man we got
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: a group text that somehow lance gets rotated off of
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: somehow and not intentionally it's just some weird technological thing
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: yeah could.
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: Be my uh my phone.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: Your phone how old is lance's phone tyler he has
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: an iphone 12 and since i'm an android guy i'm
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: not sure how old that is iphone 12 um.
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: They judge my ancient cell phone.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Sometime between Noah's Ark and the founding of America, Lance's
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: cell phone.
- 1:00:46Speaker 7: They got the 17 plus. 2020.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: 2020 was the Apple 12?
- 1:00:48Speaker 7: You got a six-year-old phone.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: That's not that old, is it? It's a COVID phone.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: It's the same thing.
- 1:00:53Speaker 7: I mean, they are the same thing. This one, I
- 1:00:55Speaker 7: always get the max storage.
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: Apple's one of the biggest rackets ever.
- 1:00:59Speaker 7: It's the same exact thing. Maybe the camera quality's a
- 1:01:02Speaker 7: little better.
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: I mean, Tyler is flying his protest by just telling
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: us his Android.
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:01:08Speaker 7: Those are cool. If I didn't know how to use
- 1:01:11Speaker 7: this so well.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: You'd go Android?
- 1:01:13Speaker 7: I would switch, yeah.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: Yeah, well, it messes up the group text, though. Tyler's.
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: No, it does.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: We got that green bubble from Tyler in the group text.
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: I'm the one that gets left out.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: I know, and it bumps Lance out. I think it's
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: either your green bubble or his old phone that bumps
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: him out of our group text. Hey, I've got a
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: two-year-old phone.
- 1:01:28Speaker 7: He's got one that needs to go to the retirement home.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: Six years is ancient for a phone these days. Do
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: a victory lap. All right. Utah is at Cincinnati. This
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: is a massive game in the Big 12, especially for Utah.
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: Defcon for Utah on the road at Cincinnati.
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: Utah on the road at Cincinnati. I will put this
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: at two. I think it's high. Look, Cincinnati coming off
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: their best performance of the season where offensively and defensively
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: they were dominant over Texas Tech.
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: And I would say this, too.
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: Utah has played the 89th most difficult schedule. That ranks
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: dead last in the Big 12. So they really haven't
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: beaten quality yet. I mean, I give them the credit
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: against Houston. That was the best team they faced. Cincinnati
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: right there kind of with Houston. But 13 straight wins
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: for the Utah Utes, longest current win streak in the FBS.
- 1:02:19Speaker 7: Yeah, I watched the game last week, and then I
- 1:02:21Speaker 7: saw Pat McAfee saying that he thought that they took
- 1:02:24Speaker 7: shots at him on social media. I was like, man,
- 1:02:26Speaker 7: I mean. I think Utah's a pretty good football team.
- 1:02:30Speaker 7: I really do. And I think Cincinnati.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: They're so untested, it's hard to tell.
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: They had not played anybody until last week. Yeah.
- 1:02:36Speaker 7: Their defense was really good, though.
- 1:02:38Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:02:40Speaker 7: I thought that Houston had a great offense and they
- 1:02:43Speaker 7: shut them down. I think they're going to be fine.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: Put them at three. Mississippi State at Texas. Now, on
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: the surface, you would completely ignore this one. State playing
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: a backup quarterback. They're at Texas. But, I mean, the
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: way Texas plays, they can let teams like this in
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: the game. I mean, I know it seems impossible.
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: I'm going five.
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think there's any.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: When we go five.
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: I know. I don't think there's any fear. I mean,
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: Texas already has three top 15 wins this year. The
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: talent differential between these two rosters is night and day.
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: And again, you're starting a backup quarterback.
- 1:03:18Speaker 7: Yeah, look, without Taylor at quarterback, Bothwell at running back,
- 1:03:23Speaker 7: they lost their best guy in the secondary. This game
- 1:03:25Speaker 7: will be over probably midway through the second quarter.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: I'm not prepared to say that.
- 1:03:30Speaker 7: They're going to destroy them.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: These are the types of segments where we come back
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: on Monday and we're like, boy, Thursday. You're going to
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: Hard Rock, man. Well, that was Thursday when Mick was
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: in studio. He said the game was going to be
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: over mid-second.
- 1:03:44Speaker 7: When they have Taylor and Bothwell, they're a good team.
- 1:03:49Speaker 7: I think Kamario Taylor is one of the most talented
- 1:03:51Speaker 7: quarterbacks in the league.
- 1:03:52Speaker 5: No doubt.
- 1:03:53Speaker 7: The drop-off is just tremendous.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:56Speaker 7: And Texas, I think, has got some momentum right now.
- 1:03:59Speaker 7: But the way that Texas runs the football is elite.
- 1:04:02Speaker 7: And if Sark would just run the football more and
- 1:04:05Speaker 7: take the ball out of Archer's hand.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: Is there a team in the SEC you don't want
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: to run more?
- 1:04:08Speaker 7: Well, I just watch them run the ball, and I say, hey,
- 1:04:10Speaker 7: if I was Alabama and I had that running attack,
- 1:04:13Speaker 7: I would never throw it.
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, Relique Brown was really good last weekend
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: against Ole Miss. didn't have Hollywood Smothers, when you've got
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: both of those guys, I do think more so lean
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: on them a little bit to open things up for Art.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: Yeah. Let's go now to Miami and North Carolina, and
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: it's here from the coaches. First, Mario Cristobal, the Miami
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: head coach. A lot of people, like me, have said
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: the problem with this game is there's Notre Dame hanging
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: out there next week, biggest game in the nation, one
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: of them, for this entire season. And is that a
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: look-ahead possibility? So Mario Cristobal addresses that.
- 1:04:48Speaker 6: The guys, they've really bought in, obviously, to the 1-0,
- 1:04:50Speaker 6: where your feet are. But this week, looking ahead to
- 1:04:54Speaker 6: Notre Dame.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: No, no, no. I'm sorry.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: We're not going to do that. So we're going to
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: look at North Carolina. No, I'm making sure that they
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: don't look ahead to Notre Dame.
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: Yes, no. I'm making sure that that's.
- 1:05:06Speaker 6: Not a draft game type thing.
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: As you can see, I'm armed and ready. So I'm sorry.
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: What was your question?
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: Just.
- 1:05:12Speaker 7: We know that they bought into that, but how important
- 1:05:14Speaker 7: is that message this week so that they don't look
- 1:05:16Speaker 7: ahead knowing that everyone has had their eyes on that game?
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: We just watched them on North Carolina at the line
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: of scrimmage. They're beating up everybody they play. It's easy
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: to see.
- 1:05:25Speaker 8: And if anyone that doesn't recognize that is chooses to
- 1:05:28Speaker 8: be blind, um, we play, uh, when, in this conference,
- 1:05:33Speaker 8: you know, and conference play in general is playoff football.
- 1:05:36Speaker 8: And I think, um, instead of thinking about what's at
- 1:05:39Speaker 8: stake and being in like defensive mode and protection mode,
- 1:05:42Speaker 8: it's more of got to say that in a hunting mode,
- 1:05:45Speaker 8: you got to be on the attack because the teams
- 1:05:48Speaker 8: that we play have really, really good players that can
- 1:05:51Speaker 8: beat you and can beat anybody and watching them on
- 1:05:54Speaker 8: tape and the things they've done and, Some of the
- 1:05:56Speaker 8: players and their capabilities, it's going to take every ounce
- 1:06:00Speaker 8: of preparation and great effort to make sure we get
- 1:06:02Speaker 8: our one and out.
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: I mean, he was ready the minute Notre Dame got mentioned. No, no, no,
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: we're not doing that this week. And the girl was like,
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: I'm asking you how you prevent your team from doing
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: it this week.
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: Look, I think the Shannon Dawson offense with Darian Mensah
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: completing over 81% of his passes, which is just really
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: silly when you think about it. Malachi Toney coming off
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: 16 receptions against Pittsburgh. Two running backs that are capable
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: of going 100-plus on any given Saturday. This offense is really,
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: really good. The defense, I still have a lot of
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: question marks. Now, the good news is you're playing a
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: North Carolina offense that doesn't put any scare into you.
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: But North Carolina's defense, I mean, they're salty. 40th right
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: now nationally in yards per play that they give up.
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: I think the key number is three. And when I
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: say three, it goes back to Auburn and Athens. If
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: they can be plus three in turnovers, they can win
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: this game.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: That's a big ask. That's a big ask.
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: And especially when Mints has only got one turnover this year.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: One interception, yep.
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: Yeah, but maybe you need a blog punt. Maybe you
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: need a recovered fumble and get that one pick and
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: set yourself up. I do think the look ahead is real.
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: This is why I would put this at DEFCON 3.
- 1:07:08Speaker 7: Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. I mean,
- 1:07:09Speaker 7: when you're talking about next week's game, even when you're
- 1:07:12Speaker 7: just saying we're not thinking about next week's game.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: Yeah, we're not talking about next week's game. You're still
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: talking about next week's game, yeah. And what's more?
- 1:07:17Speaker 7: Entertaining than Bill Belichick these days.
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: Well, let's hear it.
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: I know.
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: Let's hear Bill, the grumpy old Bill, talking about who
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: you just brought up, Malachi Tony. Bill Belichick's widely regarded,
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: and you guys, whether you like him or not, one
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: of the greatest defensive minds that's ever coached the game, right?
- 1:07:31Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:07:32Speaker 5: No doubt.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: So when you hear him talk about a specific player
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: and the difficulty in stopping that player, that should tell
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: you just how good Malachi Tony is. And here's Bill Belichick.
- 1:07:42Speaker 10: I mean, he can kill you on a screen pass.
- 1:07:45Speaker 10: He can kill you on an intermediate play. He can
- 1:07:46Speaker 10: kill you on deep balls. obviously returns, improvised plays. He
- 1:07:55Speaker 10: helps the quarterback out a lot because he gets open.
- 1:07:58Speaker 10: He finds ways to get open even when he's double covered.
- 1:08:01Speaker 10: That doesn't really stop him. You would think it would,
- 1:08:07Speaker 10: but not really. He's made several big plays off of
- 1:08:12Speaker 10: double coverage because he knows how to beat double coverage.
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: That's At his age, it's pretty impressive.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, Bill's not going to get excited about
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: anything except the 24-year-old, but he may not even get
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: excited about that. Boy, she's going to hide it.
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: Yeah, she has.
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: What if they're still together?
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: I have no idea.
- 1:08:32Speaker 7: Probably one of those business decisions.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: Quiet breakups.
- 1:08:36Speaker 7: No, no, no. You stay out of the spot.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: That's right. Yeah, we're still together, but you stay out
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: of the spot.
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: Your allowance will continue to come as long as nobody
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: sees you.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: But to hear him talk in such glowing terms about Malachi, Tony,
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: where basically he said you can double-team him, doesn't stop him.
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: I mean, why double-team him? He knows how to beat
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: a double-team.
- 1:08:51Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: I mean, I do think– I asked Lance the other
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: day because a lot of people have just given Jeremiah
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: Smith the Heisman and said he's going to– to win it,
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: the Ohio State receiver. Malachi Toney is a legitimate challenger
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: at that Heisman spot. A good game there, fine. A
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: good game against Notre Dame. I know Mario doesn't want
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: you talking about that yet, but a good game against
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: Notre Dame, I think Malachi Toney could win this Heisman.
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: I think he could just because he's so electric and
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: he does so many different things for this offense and
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: he also does it in the return game.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: But the problem there is you split votes.
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: Now, we saw Devontae Smith win it in 2020, split
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: votes with Mack Jones. But Darian Minty, you can't deny
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: the fact that he's completing over 81% of his passes,
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: 22 touchdowns, and only one interception.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: I don't disagree with you. You could go either route there,
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: and that may be ultimately the decision between those two
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: and Jeremiah Smith. I really don't even know who's factored in.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: Who else is factored in in your mind, Heisman-wise?
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: Those three.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: Trinidad probably cost himself a Texas, didn't he?
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Stockton cost himself a couple of weeks ago.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I really don't even know who would factor in
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: at this point.
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: Yeah, CJ Carr hasn't been great.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: Yeah, right now it's those three. Unfortunately, Atkinson and Legree
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: play so off-Broadway, they'll never get any sort of.
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: I wouldn't think so.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: Any sort of pop. All right, the final game for
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: DEFCON is Ohio State at USC. Massive, massive game for
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: Lincoln Riley. Ohio State mix starting backup quarterback. So that
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: puts this in play, obviously. Having to go on the road,
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: even though USC's not the most hostile environment in the world.
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: DEFCON 1-5 for Ohio State.
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: Where do you go?
- 1:10:35Speaker 7: I mean, this feels like the final year of Lincoln Riley, right?
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: A lot of people are saying that, yeah.
- 1:10:42Speaker 7: Because, I mean, everybody feels like it. Without the starting quarterback,
- 1:10:46Speaker 7: USC ought to be able to contend. There's a guy
- 1:10:49Speaker 7: that probably knows more about USC than me. But you
- 1:10:51Speaker 7: know Ohio State's going to figure out a way to
- 1:10:53Speaker 7: win this football game. They're going to be better on defense.
- 1:10:56Speaker 7: USC will make mistakes. The backups back up like Alabama
- 1:11:03Speaker 7: found out in 2014. They've got guys that can play.
- 1:11:08Speaker 7: And if you don't put it all on the quarterback's shoulders,
- 1:11:11Speaker 7: I think Ohio State is... Really a good team. They're
- 1:11:14Speaker 7: coming off one of their biggest wins since the national
- 1:11:18Speaker 7: championship game. I think I'd put it at a three.
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: I think I would go two just based on this.
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: Luke Fahey starting at quarterback. USC has yet to see
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: a top 50 efficiency offense. So they're going to see it,
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: but they're going to see it with a backup quarterback.
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: So how efficient is it really going to be? You've
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: got to account for Jeremiah Smith. I don't think anybody,
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: I mean, nobody in the country has got somebody that
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: can actually match up with him. I know USC does.
- 1:11:49Speaker 3: And when you look at these matchups, Lincoln Riley in
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: 20 top 25 matchups at USC, what do you think
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: his record is?
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: 20 top 25 matchups at USC, I'm going to say
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: Lincoln Riley is 7-13.
- 1:12:04Speaker 5: 5-15.
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: That is bad.
- 1:12:07Speaker 7: 5-15.
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: That's USC. He's not doing that at some random place.
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: He has not been great in these matchups. And just
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: how bad, how pitiful, how anemic that offense looked last
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: week in Madison. I just don't know if it bounces back.
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: I think they're going to hang in there, but that's
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: just because Julian Sayen's not playing.
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:12:24Speaker 7: I wonder who their next coach will be.
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: That's the big question.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: A lot of people are asking that question. A lot
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: of people are asking that question. I know what Mick
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: wants to say right now. By the way, we have
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: been at DEFCON 2 twice in the history of the
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: United States. One was the Cuban Missile Crisis. I was
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: going to say Bay of Pigs. That's right, Cuban Missile Crisis.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: Had to be. The other was Operation Desert Storm in 91.
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: I did not remember us going to DEFCON 2. I
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: was in high school then. I'll tell you this.
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: I was in college, and I remember us talking about,
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: are they going to go back to the old school drafts?
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I know. That war lasted, what, 48 hours?
- 1:12:58Speaker 7: My dad got drafted.
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: But that was kind of the talk.
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: Oh, I know, yeah. In high school, you're like, oh, crap,
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: America's going to war.
- 1:13:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: And I remember my parents, like, hey, go fill up
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: on gas. Let's go ahead and get gas while it's cheap.
- 1:13:08Speaker 7: Do they still do the thing where you have to
- 1:13:10Speaker 7: fill out the form?
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: Do you have to register for selective service anymore?
- 1:13:13Speaker 7: I mean, I know we did.
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: I did.
- 1:13:15Speaker 5: I did.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: Might not be bad. You know, Tyler, you're the.
- 1:13:17Speaker 6: Youngest among the young people to do that.
- 1:13:19Speaker 7: I think it's part of voter registration.
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: Oh, voter registration. I believe so. Is that the loophole? Like, oh,
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: by the way, you're also in selective service.
- 1:13:24Speaker 7: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: Do you remember when all the world events were going on?
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: CNN captured everybody. Like, there was nowhere else to go
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: because we obviously didn't have social media, didn't have the internet.
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: It was all CNN.
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: Those are the days, huh? All right, Mick, thanks for
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: swinging by, buddy.
- 1:13:40Speaker 5: Good to see you.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: Mick on our platform a lot. We're going to talk
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: to Clay Travis next. It is the next round on
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: Sporting State presented by Hard Rock Bet. Hard Rock Bet
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: slash Clay. Hard Rock Bet slash Clay.
- 1:13:57Speaker 6: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 1:13:57Speaker 5: This is Coach's chair. We protect Coach's chair the way
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: Hard Rock Bet does. Protects Coach's account. Hard Rock Bet
- 1:14:03Speaker 5: keeps Coach's info safe.
- 1:14:05Speaker 8: Hard Rock Bet keeps Coach's money safe.
- 1:14:07Speaker 5: And we keep Coach safe. Hey, fellas. Coach. Coach.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: How about that protection? Can I grab a wing?
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: Coach's wings.
- 1:14:17Speaker 6: Guess I'll sit on the ground.
- 1:14:18Speaker 5: That's where Coach puts his feet.
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: Safe and secure betting from the very first tap.
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: Great to meet you, Coach.
- 1:14:23Speaker 5: It was Coach's pleasure.
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: It is the next round on sport and state presented
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: by hard rock back. Clay Travis is the founder of
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: sport and state. You also see him on Fox. He
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: follows us with Buck Sexton on sport and state. Clay
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: and Buck will be coming up in just about 40
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: minutes right here. After we are finished, he is with
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: us now. Welcome in Clay. How are you today?
- 1:14:42Speaker 6: I'm fantastic. Just seeing the news. I'm sure you guys
- 1:14:44Speaker 6: talked about it.
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: I was live on Fox news, so I didn't see
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: it in the meantime that, um, Jeffrey Simmons has been
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: traded to the Chicago bears for a couple of.
- 1:14:53Speaker 6: First round picks.
- 1:14:54Speaker 4: Um, Titans star player, obviously for SEC fans, they remember
- 1:14:59Speaker 4: him from Mississippi State. Big time, havoc-wreaking defensive tackle. Good
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: haul for the Titans. This may be the first thing
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: the Titans have done this season that I've actually agreed with,
- 1:15:12Speaker 4: getting a first-round pick, 27-28. This team is nowhere close
- 1:15:16Speaker 4: to being able to compete at a high level in
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: the NFL. So you've got to rebuild, and the way
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: you rebuild typically is by getting draft picks. Now they've
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: got to make good picks with them, which has been
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: a problem for the Titans too. But I think it's
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: the right move. It's the smart move. And if you've
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: made the decision that you're awful, the worst place to
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: be in the NFL is 7-10, 8-9, 9-8, sort of
- 1:15:43Speaker 4: floating around mediocrity. You've got to be able to have
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: a team that can get to 12 wins. And we'll
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: see if the Titans can do that any time in
- 1:15:51Speaker 4: the next 10 years. But at least with the right
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: young players, that's the goal.
- 1:15:55Speaker 3: Well, I do think it's fascinating. Robert Sala, you know,
- 1:15:58Speaker 3: coming off year one, what do you do with Sala
- 1:16:01Speaker 3: and what do you do with Cam Ward? Do you
- 1:16:03Speaker 3: reset a coach and quarterback? Do you reset at one
- 1:16:05Speaker 3: and not the other? I don't think the coach matters. And,
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: you know, people can say, Clay, what in the world
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: are you talking about? If your quarterback stinks.
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: It doesn't matter how good of a coach you have.
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: If your quarterback stinks, you can't win at a high
- 1:16:19Speaker 4: level in the NFL. I'm not sure you can win
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: at a high level now in college football either, but
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: that's a different story. In the NFL, your quarterback matters
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: way more than your coach. So the Titans have to
- 1:16:31Speaker 4: get the quarterback position solidified. It seems that they have
- 1:16:34Speaker 4: made the decision that they're going to go with Cam
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: Ward for the remainder of this season because otherwise I
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: think they would have benched him already. At that point
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: in time, you have two full years of data on
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: him as a quarterback, and we will see now they're
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: going to have two first-round picks. Is it possible that
- 1:16:53Speaker 4: they go back into the draft and decide to go
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: get a quarterback this year and just say, hey, the
- 1:17:01Speaker 4: Cam Ward experiment has not worked. We'll see what happens
- 1:17:04Speaker 4: on the final, I think it's 10 games, if I'm
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: not mistaken on my counting, final 10 games of the season,
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: but the first 25 or whatever the heck he's played
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: has not suggested that there is a reason for much optimism.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: So the Titans have traded Jeffrey Simmons on the college side.
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: Is there anybody that is in the SEC that is
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: happy with the SEC? Like Tennessee fans are furious about
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: the way your game was officiated over the weekend. Lane
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: Kiffin basically said yesterday the SEC doesn't want us to win,
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: so we're not going to catch any breaks from them.
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: Do you think there's one fan base that's like, you
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: know what, I'm cool with the SEC. I think they
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: do things the right way.
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: Kentucky is pretty happy right now. Look, I think this
- 1:17:47Speaker 4: is part and parcel of the brand new era that
- 1:17:50Speaker 4: we find ourselves in in college football. I think everybody
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: is going to have to realize that nine and three
- 1:17:57Speaker 4: is a good season. Ten and two is a great season.
- 1:18:00Speaker 4: And you guys are NFL fans. I know a lot
- 1:18:02Speaker 4: of SEC fans are also NFL fans, but I'm not
- 1:18:05Speaker 4: sure they follow it anywhere near the same level. The
- 1:18:08Speaker 4: era of, I think, undefeated teams is basically over. I
- 1:18:12Speaker 4: saw Danny Cannell tweet, and I don't think it's a
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: crazy take. that in years ahead we may look back
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: on teams like Indiana, LSU, that were undefeated as the
- 1:18:23Speaker 4: equivalent of 1972 Miami Dolphins in the NFL. I just
- 1:18:28Speaker 4: think we're entering into an era of parity where losses
- 1:18:32Speaker 4: are going to become far more common and where, again,
- 1:18:37Speaker 4: 9-3 is going to get you in the playoffs and
- 1:18:40Speaker 4: some years 8-4 will.
- 1:18:42Speaker 6: And that's going to take some time.
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: I think, for college football fans to adjust to that
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: new paradigm, that new reality of college athletics.
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: If you were advising Arch Manning, would you tell him
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: to stay at Texas another year, transfer out or go
- 1:18:59Speaker 3: to the NFL?
- 1:19:01Speaker 4: I think it depends on how the season finishes and
- 1:19:03Speaker 4: what his NFL projection is. Arch is going to have
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: really good advisors, obviously, with his uncles and with Cooper.
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: This is not a guy who's going to listen to
- 1:19:12Speaker 4: the last guy to talk into his ear. I don't
- 1:19:14Speaker 4: think the family needs money. That's always a good position
- 1:19:17Speaker 4: to be in where you don't have to make a
- 1:19:19Speaker 4: choice entirely based on money. I bet everybody watching and
- 1:19:23Speaker 4: listening to us right now has been in a position.
- 1:19:25Speaker 6: I certainly have. I know you guys have.
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: Where you have to take a job because you've got
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: a mortgage to pay. It's not necessarily the best job
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: or the job that you would want to have, but
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: that's what adulthood requires. That's what personal responsibility mandates. And
- 1:19:40Speaker 4: so that's fortunately for the Manning family and for Arch,
- 1:19:44Speaker 4: that's not his imperative. And so I think he can
- 1:19:48Speaker 4: make a rational decision based on all of the evidence,
- 1:19:52Speaker 4: I would bet, I mean, look, you want to float
- 1:19:55Speaker 4: something that can get clipped and people pay a lot
- 1:19:57Speaker 4: of attention to it. Seems like Ole Miss is going
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: to have need for a quarterback next year. I would
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: just point out, you know, with Trinidad Chambliss leaving, are
- 1:20:07Speaker 4: there a lot of people in Oxford that would pay
- 1:20:09Speaker 4: $ 5 million a year for Arch to come to Ole
- 1:20:13Speaker 4: Miss and be a quarterback for a year? I would
- 1:20:15Speaker 4: be stunned if that's not the case and if they
- 1:20:17Speaker 4: wouldn't welcome him with open arms. I would think there
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: would be a lot of places that would bid and say, hey,
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: we think we can have a better setting for you, Arch.
- 1:20:27Speaker 4: We think we can have more success for you. So
- 1:20:30Speaker 4: I think it depends on how this season finishes. Remember,
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: everybody's down on the Longhorns, but they do have the
- 1:20:36Speaker 4: three best wins of any team in college football. They
- 1:20:39Speaker 4: beat Ohio State. They beat Tennessee on the road. They
- 1:20:42Speaker 4: beat Ole Miss. That's three top 20 caliber wins. Nobody
- 1:20:47Speaker 4: else has that. Yes, it's frustrating. The loss to Oklahoma
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: and Florida, I think, frankly, were hard to justify and
- 1:20:54Speaker 4: hard to explain.
- 1:20:56Speaker 6: They only lost by three.
- 1:20:57Speaker 4: A bunch of different plays in those games could have
- 1:20:59Speaker 4: gone a different direction, and they could have ended up
- 1:21:01Speaker 4: winning by 10. So I just look at this situation
- 1:21:06Speaker 4: and say, okay, let's see how they finish the year.
- 1:21:09Speaker 4: If they were to run the table and go 10-2,
- 1:21:12Speaker 4: I think people might look at Arch quite a bit
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: differently than they do sitting right now at 6-2.
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: I mean, David in the chat, it's like $ 5 million
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: for a three-star quarterback. That is a lot. I mean,
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: Arch is not.
- 1:21:22Speaker 5: A three-star, is he?
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: I don't think he's a three-star.
- 1:21:25Speaker 4: What star would you give him right now? Look, what
- 1:21:28Speaker 4: did Sam Levitt get at LSU? Have you watched him play?
- 1:21:31Speaker 4: Have you thought, oh my goodness, Sam Levitt is one
- 1:21:33Speaker 4: of the greatest players out there?
- 1:21:36Speaker 3: The last couple of weeks, Sam Levitt's looked really, really good.
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: Yeah, but I don't I don't know if he's been
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: a $ 5 million quarterback.
- 1:21:41Speaker 4: No, LSU has looked really good on the defensive side
- 1:21:43Speaker 4: of the ball, but has he looked like a guy
- 1:21:44Speaker 4: worth $ 5 million? Has Hoover up at Indiana looked.
- 1:21:50Speaker 6: Like a $ 5 million quarterback?
- 1:21:52Speaker 4: Has Bryce Underwood looked like a $ 4 million quarterback? Look,
- 1:21:56Speaker 4: I mean, you're gambling somewhat on what the outcome of
- 1:22:00Speaker 4: a quarterback is going to be. I mean, heck, even
- 1:22:03Speaker 4: Ole Miss didn't know what they had in Trinidad and
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: Chambliss until they got him fixed and flowing inside of
- 1:22:08Speaker 4: the offense. Um, to me, I, I, again, I think
- 1:22:12Speaker 4: Arch Manning would be a top first, second or third
- 1:22:14Speaker 4: round pick.
- 1:22:15Speaker 6: He's big, he's strong, he's tough. He's got a good arm.
- 1:22:18Speaker 4: Somebody would draft them in the NFL in the first
- 1:22:20Speaker 4: three rounds. Um, do they want that or do they want,
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: I think somebody 100% would pay $ 5 million for Arch
- 1:22:27Speaker 4: next year.
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: You can eat a lot of cheesecake factory on $ 5 million.
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: Can't you Clay? That is a lot of cheesecake factory.
- 1:22:32Speaker 6: That's right. I can go all over the place.
- 1:22:34Speaker 3: Tell me the controversy with the cheesecake factory.
- 1:22:38Speaker 6: Uh, What's that?
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: There was some kind of controversy with the cheesecake.
- 1:22:44Speaker 6: People are coming after me over Cheesecake Factory.
- 1:22:47Speaker 4: Look, all I said was Barack Obama's.
- 1:22:49Speaker 6: Out of touch.
- 1:22:51Speaker 4: When I go to eat at the Cheesecake Factory in
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: my entire life, it's been a treat. And it's not
- 1:22:56Speaker 4: a low end chain restaurant. And so if you want
- 1:22:59Speaker 4: to make a joke at Trump's expense and try to
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: argue that he's making the Oval Office look low rent
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: and low end. then you better pick a place that's
- 1:23:08Speaker 4: actually low rent and low in in order.
- 1:23:12Speaker 6: To make that joke.
- 1:23:13Speaker 4: Cheesecake Factory, I mean, it is expensive to eat there.
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: Do you guys have a Cheesecake Factory in Birmingham?
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: Yeah, of course we do. I would be caught dead there,
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: but yes.
- 1:23:24Speaker 4: You wouldn't be caught dead there. My parents love it.
- 1:23:26Speaker 4: We've been going for years. My mom texted me this week.
- 1:23:31Speaker 4: Your dad and I are out at the Cheesecake Factory
- 1:23:33Speaker 4: even before all the controversy started.
- 1:23:36Speaker 6: They love it.
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: Do they actually get cheesecake?
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: Does anybody get cheesecake there?
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: That's controversial now, but I'll take it. Look, my general
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: position on everything is, and I may have told you
- 1:23:48Speaker 4: guys this before, every time somebody attacks you for something
- 1:23:52Speaker 4: in the world in which we live in, Maybe 75%
- 1:23:56Speaker 4: of people say, I hate that guy.
- 1:23:58Speaker 6: How dare he say X or Y?
- 1:24:01Speaker 4: And by the way, I would suggest you go buy
- 1:24:04Speaker 4: XXXY gear, which I am an investor and board member in.
- 1:24:08Speaker 4: It's a fabulous company. And you say X or Y.
- 1:24:12Speaker 4: What I have found to be true, and I don't know,
- 1:24:14Speaker 4: I bet this will be true in the chat. People say,
- 1:24:18Speaker 4: I hate Clay Travis. And the first thing you may
- 1:24:21Speaker 4: have ever heard about me is I hate Clay Travis.
- 1:24:23Speaker 4: He's like the worst guy on the planet. What does
- 1:24:25Speaker 4: that make people do? They say, oh, who is this guy,
- 1:24:29Speaker 4: Clay Travis? I've never heard of him before. Let me
- 1:24:30Speaker 4: look him up. And maybe 75 or 80% of people
- 1:24:33Speaker 4: are like, this guy is the antichrist.
- 1:24:35Speaker 5: I hate him.
- 1:24:36Speaker 6: But you know what?
- 1:24:36Speaker 4: 20% of people are like, I kind of agree with
- 1:24:40Speaker 4: some of the stuff that he's saying. He's not actually
- 1:24:42Speaker 4: that controversial. A huge percentage of my audience on this
- 1:24:47Speaker 4: point in time as I speak to you guys is
- 1:24:49Speaker 4: people who found me because I was being attacked for
- 1:24:53Speaker 4: something or other. And people just kept listening. And I'm
- 1:24:57Speaker 4: like Moss. The more you listen, I grow. And that's
- 1:25:00Speaker 4: how I built an audience that is one of the
- 1:25:03Speaker 4: biggest in and frankly, all of American media, at least
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: certainly when you consider live audience every day across radio, TV, digital.
- 1:25:11Speaker 4: There's not very many people with a bigger audience than
- 1:25:13Speaker 4: me every day.
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: I was going to follow up on Arch Manning real quick.
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: Your buddy Jordan Rogers actually on Get Up yesterday said
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: that he should transfer or He should consider transferring. Jordan
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: didn't say he should. He said he should consider. and
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: he threw out three schools, Ole Miss, LSU, and Miami.
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: Miami's obviously always active in the free agency quarterback game.
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: Ole Miss will need a quarterback. With LSU, it would
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: be interesting.
- 1:25:39Speaker 6: I thought Levitt had multiple years.
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what I asked.
- 1:25:43Speaker 3: I think Levitt's on year five. I'll tell you right now.
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: All right, but real quick, I wouldn't think the Mannings
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: and Lane Kiffin would see eye to eye. That would
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: seem like a weird marriage to me. It would.
- 1:25:57Speaker 6: Look, again, I understand people might disagree with me.
- 1:26:01Speaker 4: I think there are tons of schools out there that
- 1:26:03Speaker 4: would offer $ 5 million.
- 1:26:05Speaker 6: Here's the bigger issue for me.
- 1:26:07Speaker 3: And real quick, Clay, Leavitt does have one more year.
- 1:26:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: I mean, I don't think Leavitt's going to go pro.
- 1:26:13Speaker 4: I think he'll be back. Maybe he wants, maybe he
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: gets out. Everything's a one-year rental now. But let me
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: just say this. The thing that would have me nervous
- 1:26:23Speaker 4: about Arch is, Steve Sarkeesian has sort of this reputation
- 1:26:28Speaker 4: as the ultimate quarterback whisperer, the ultimate quarterback developer.
- 1:26:33Speaker 6: Maybe that's unfair, right?
- 1:26:36Speaker 4: But I would want, if I were advising Arch, I
- 1:26:40Speaker 4: would say, okay, where is the best place that I
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: can go that is going to truly develop all of
- 1:26:48Speaker 4: my talents and put me in a place to win?
- 1:26:50Speaker 4: And look, I'm just going to say this, Miami? When
- 1:26:53Speaker 4: Miami has decided on a guy, Cam Ward, Carson Beck,
- 1:26:58Speaker 4: and now Darian Mensah, three straight years, one and done,
- 1:27:02Speaker 4: star quarterbacks have come to Miami and thrived in their system.
- 1:27:08Speaker 4: I don't know what the relationship would be like or
- 1:27:12Speaker 4: is between, or if it exists at all, between Mario
- 1:27:15Speaker 4: Cristobal and the Manning family, but you get to play
- 1:27:19Speaker 4: in the ACC, guys. That slows down the game a
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: little bit, let's be honest. You have an incredible offensive
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: and defensive talent differential right now at Miami compared to
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: the rest of the ACC. They sent Cam Ward in
- 1:27:35Speaker 4: overall as a number one pick. Where did Carson Beck
- 1:27:39Speaker 4: end up going?
- 1:27:39Speaker 5: I don't remember.
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: Yeah, Arizona.
- 1:27:42Speaker 6: But he got drafted, right?
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: Yeah, Arizona. Yeah, third round Arizona.
- 1:27:45Speaker 6: Okay, he's in Arizona.
- 1:27:46Speaker 5: Arizona.
- 1:27:47Speaker 4: And then Darian Mince is going to be a relatively
- 1:27:49Speaker 4: high-round draft pick, too. Ole Miss, to me, makes more
- 1:27:53Speaker 4: sense based on the family connection and because Trinidad Chambliss
- 1:27:56Speaker 4: is leaving. From a relationship perspective, you know that they
- 1:27:59Speaker 4: know everybody well at Ole Miss. Cooper does, for sure.
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: But from a quarterback development perspective, the story that Miami
- 1:28:06Speaker 4: has to tell after three straight huge successes in the
- 1:28:10Speaker 4: transfer portal, everybody that has gone there basically has had
- 1:28:13Speaker 4: their best year.
- 1:28:14Speaker 6: I think it's hard to– to look away from.
- 1:28:17Speaker 4: By the way, I think you and me could, all
- 1:28:20Speaker 4: three of us would look good throwing the ball to
- 1:28:22Speaker 4: Malachi Toney.
- 1:28:23Speaker 6: So you know he's back for another year. He can't leave.
- 1:28:26Speaker 6: He's going to be a junior.
- 1:28:28Speaker 4: I think that's a hell of a sales pitch to
- 1:28:30Speaker 4: be able to make to somebody that uh that miami
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: has the ability to uh to kind of give you
- 1:28:36Speaker 4: hey malachi tony pretty good place to start.
- 1:28:39Speaker 3: You know we talked about kentucky there for a second
- 1:28:41Speaker 3: and if you're giving your national coach of the year
- 1:28:44Speaker 3: award away it's either will stein or maybe bob chesney
- 1:28:47Speaker 3: if you were advising will stein there's going to be
- 1:28:50Speaker 3: some possible big jobs opening florida state could be open
- 1:28:54Speaker 3: uh usc could be open hell texas could be open
- 1:28:58Speaker 3: Do you think Will Stein, if you were advising, would
- 1:29:00Speaker 3: you tell him to take a look at one of
- 1:29:02Speaker 3: these jobs after one year or stay at Kentucky?
- 1:29:06Speaker 4: Well, he's a Kentucky kid, so I think he may
- 1:29:08Speaker 4: be a little bit unique in that he may actually
- 1:29:11Speaker 4: have a job that he wants to have for a
- 1:29:13Speaker 4: long time to come. And all I would say is
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: I think the job matters way less than it ever
- 1:29:19Speaker 4: has before. Look at Indiana and what Kurt Cignetti did there.
- 1:29:24Speaker 4: Kentucky has an amazing fan base. You guys know you've
- 1:29:27Speaker 4: been to college basketball where the fan base shows up
- 1:29:30Speaker 4: in spades. They've never won in football. If they started
- 1:29:34Speaker 4: to win in football, they would show up for football
- 1:29:38Speaker 4: events like Indiana does because historically we've known Indiana as
- 1:29:42Speaker 4: a good basketball program. Now they've fallen off and are mediocre,
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: I would say, over the last generation. Indiana basketball has
- 1:29:51Speaker 4: been mediocre at best. I think relative to the standards
- 1:29:55Speaker 4: of Kentucky basketball, Kentucky has been very mediocre for much
- 1:29:59Speaker 4: of the last 10, 12 years in basketball. And so
- 1:30:03Speaker 4: I think he has the potential to win at a
- 1:30:06Speaker 4: high level at Kentucky.
- 1:30:08Speaker 6: I wouldn't tell him to leave.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: All right, he is Clay Travis. You will see him
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: on Fox Big Noon Kick. Clay and Buck follow us
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: right here on Sport and State coming up in about
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: 20 minutes and then the Clay Travis Show right after that,
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: also on Sport and State. Clay, thank you for the time.
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: Have a great weekend.
- 1:30:22Speaker 4: By the way, going to give you guys props. Everything
- 1:30:26Speaker 4: is tough to build when you're starting anew. We're only
- 1:30:29Speaker 4: two months in as a part of the Sport and
- 1:30:31Speaker 4: State network, but I'm sure you saw the awful announcing
- 1:30:35Speaker 4: article that went up. I'm increasingly hearing just very good
- 1:30:39Speaker 4: things in my go around the world travels here where
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: people come up and they say, hey, that next round
- 1:30:46Speaker 4: live show is really good. I've started to see it
- 1:30:48Speaker 4: sometimes on YouTube up on the sport and state site.
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: So keep up the good work. I think we're building
- 1:30:53Speaker 4: a pretty good network of shows.
- 1:30:55Speaker 6: We're early.
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: We're two months in. You know, it's like a baby
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: trying to learn how to how to sit up. But
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: in the years ahead and months ahead, I think people
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: are going to be impressed with our growth and the
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: continued good product. So thank you guys for the work.
- 1:31:08Speaker 6: Awesome.
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: Thank you. Great feedback. Thank you, Clay.
- 1:31:11Speaker 6: All right. Appreciate you all. Have a good day.
- 1:31:14Speaker 7: Yep.
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: You too. We'll see you, Clay Travis, with us. Those
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: are very kind words. We appreciate anyone that would say
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: that about us. I live my life constantly shocked that
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: people love this show, but I thank you that they
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: do love it. We just kind of sit here and
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: I frequently say, We goof off. I used to say
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: for three hours. Now I say for four, and we
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: somehow get paid for it. Nobody's ever called on to
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: the scam. So as long as nobody ever catches on
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: to the scam, we're okay.
- 1:31:38Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: As we go to break, a reminder of XXXY. You
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: saw Clay wearing the shirt there. It was founded by
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: Jennifer Say, former national champion gymnast, former Levi's brand president.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: She walked away from a corporate job. Rather than say
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: something she didn't believe in, started XXXY Athletics instead. The mission...
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: In their words, empower female athletes and take a stand
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: for fair competition. It's the tea that launched a movement,
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: real athletic apparel, not just a slogan on a shirt.
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: It's performance tops, tanks, sports bras, leggings, shorts, training sets, hoodies, hats,
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: graphic teas, men's and women's clothing worn by athletes that
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: have actually put something on the line. The new customers
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: get 20% off the first order. When you sign up
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: free shipping over a hundred bucks, XXXYathletics.com. That is XX-XYathletics.com. When,
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: When we return, sorry, when we return, I have got one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: eight NFL true-false questions for you.
- 1:32:31Speaker 3: Okay, let's do it.
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: True-false NFL. When we return, it is the next round
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: on Sporting State presented by Hard Rock Bet.
- 1:32:38Speaker 9: This year, the biggest sportsbook party is getting even bigger.
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: Hey, there's J-Boy.
- 1:32:43Speaker 9: Whether you just getting here or you've been here, you're
- 1:32:45Speaker 9: not leaving here empty-handed.
- 1:32:48Speaker 3: Hey, J, Jimmy Johnson.
- 1:32:50Speaker 5: Kevin, they know me?
- 1:32:52Speaker 7: Of course, in this party, everybody's somebody.
- 1:32:55Speaker 9: This season, Hard Rock Bet has something for everyone.
- 1:32:58Speaker 3: Plus, you customers bet $ 5 and get up to $ 500
- 1:33:01Speaker 3: in no-sweat bets.
- 1:33:02Speaker 7: Hey, that's Fat Joe.
- 1:33:03Speaker 3: Forget him.
- 1:33:04Speaker 5: That's J-Boy. Hey, J-Boy.
- 1:33:06Speaker 6: My name's J-Boy. I got that.
- 1:33:07Speaker 5: I got that.
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: It is the next round on Sports Day presented by
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: Hard Rock Bet. One other feedback. I've had several people
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: tell me they love Jimmy Johnson in those commercials. Jimmy
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: Johnson's one of those guys. God, he was a hard
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: dude when he coached.
- 1:33:23Speaker 3: He was.
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: And he's kind of turned into more of a.
- 1:33:26Speaker 3: I think people soften up when they get a little older.
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: But boy, his former players are like, that dude, man,
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: he drove... You just go watch that Cowboys documentary on Netflix.
- 1:33:35Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, I mean, I think there's a lot of
- 1:33:36Speaker 3: similarities between the intensity from Jimmy Johnson to Nick Saban.
- 1:33:41Speaker 3: And we've heard that Nick Saban's lightened up a little bit.
- 1:33:44Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: Jimmy Johnson, though, literally was like, Uh, I, if I
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: want to win big time in college football, I can't
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: have a wife. We're going to get divorced. Like I've got,
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: I can't focus on a marriage and winning big time
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: in football.
- 1:33:56Speaker 3: And I don't think he's ever remarried.
- 1:33:59Speaker 5: Has he?
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: Don't think so. I think maybe he had, maybe he
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: had a lady friend, but I don't know if he's
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: actually married her. But yeah, I mean, that was basically
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: what he said was marriage is getting in the way
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: of me coaching football. That ain't going to last.
- 1:34:10Speaker 3: Is there any feedback on a fat Joe in the commercials?
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: I've not heard a lot of people talk about fat Joe. Um,
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: But Fat Joe is, you know, he's secondary to Jimmy
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: Johnson for our audience.
- 1:34:20Speaker 3: But he does get identified.
- 1:34:21Speaker 5: He does.
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: He says, hey, I'm Fat Joe. We didn't have to
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: recognize him. We didn't have to identify Coach. We recognized him.
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: A lot of people like Jimmy Johnson. All right. Before
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: we do NFL True Faults, a reminder of Crockett Coffee.
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: It's started by Clay Travis, Buck Sexton, and Buck's brother Mason.
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: Named after Davy Crockett, the hunter, the storyteller, the patriot,
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: the backwoods legend. You see the logo, Davy Crockett surfing
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: on the back of Crocodile, like the old myth said.
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: It's a coffee that means business. 100% pure Arabica, high-altitude beans,
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: small batch roasted right in America's heartland, shipping fresh, not
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: sitting on a warehouse shelf for six months. You can
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: order it in light, medium, dark, decaf, organic, even a
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: mushroom blend, whole bean, ground, K-cups, however you make.
- 1:35:00Speaker 6: It in the morning.

- 1:35:10Speaker 1: there's a discount for veterans as well. Crockett also partners
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: with Tunnel to Towers, building mortgage-free homes for families of
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: the fallen service members and catastrophically injured veterans and first responders.
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: It is good coffee made in America doing some good.
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: Crockett Coffee. That is Crockett, C-R-O-C-K-E-T-T, CrockettCoffee.com. All right, Lance
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: got his true-false paddle.
- 1:35:31Speaker 3: I have got it.
- 1:35:31Speaker 5: Ready to roll.
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: I'm going to throw out all these questions, and you
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: give me a true or a false. I read this
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: at CBSSports.com today. The Denver Broncos have a Knicks problem.
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: Do the Denver Broncos have a Bo Nicks problem?
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: Boy, I can't ride the fence. It's either true or false.
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: It's either true or false. You can't hold it sideways.
- 1:35:52Speaker 3: I am going to say that is true. Now, as
- 1:35:56Speaker 3: soon as I say this, I want to go back and,
- 1:35:59Speaker 3: you know, you need a quality running back. We talked
- 1:36:01Speaker 3: to Brock Huard about this the other day, that maybe
- 1:36:04Speaker 3: Jonathan Taylor would be that guy.
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: More on that in a moment.
- 1:36:09Speaker 3: I just, I don't trust Bo Nix. Like, he seems
- 1:36:12Speaker 3: to be really good in fourth quarter situations. We've seen
- 1:36:15Speaker 3: two of those this year, but I would say that
- 1:36:17Speaker 3: that is true because they've got an elite defense. You've
- 1:36:21Speaker 3: got what has been an elite play caller.
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:36:24Speaker 3: I just don't trust Bo.
- 1:36:26Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: But again, if he wouldn't have gotten hurt last year,
- 1:36:29Speaker 3: they're in the Super Bowl.
- 1:36:30Speaker 4: I know.
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: That's the thing. He had them on the verge of
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. And now people are saying that they've
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: got a Bo Nix problem.
- 1:36:37Speaker 3: And look, this could end up working out because we
- 1:36:38Speaker 3: talked about Jared Goff earlier. Jared Goff gets to a
- 1:36:42Speaker 3: Super Bowl in 2018, and then he starts struggling again.
- 1:36:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:36:46Speaker 3: And Sean McVay was like, we're not going to be
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: able to do this with him at quarterback. And, you know,
- 1:36:51Speaker 3: they go out and get Matthew Stafford. I've never seen
- 1:36:53Speaker 3: a deal work as well as it's worked for two organizations.
- 1:36:55Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:36:56Speaker 3: Because golf has really worked out well there. So, you know,
- 1:36:59Speaker 3: maybe this is a situation where Bo Nix ultimately goes
- 1:37:02Speaker 3: somewhere else. I don't know how in the hell they're
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: going to pay him 60 or 70 million dollars.
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: That's the problem is he's about to have that free agency.
- 1:37:07Speaker 3: I just don't see that happening.
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: Yeah, the Broncos have got to make a choice there.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: But I don't know of another NFL franchise that would
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: pay him that money either. So I don't know that
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: he's going to get that anywhere. True or false, the
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: Colts trade Jonathan Taylor.
- 1:37:19Speaker 3: I'm going to say true. You fired your general manager
- 1:37:21Speaker 3: in Chris Ballard. You're basically dead in the water right now.
- 1:37:25Speaker 3: You've already gotten rid of DeForest Bugner and Quentin Nelson.
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: I mean, two of your better players. So, yeah, I
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: think why not? True or false, the Colts fire Shane Steichen.
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: Some say he's the first to get fired.
- 1:37:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that is true. I mean, you're unloading
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: on everything there right now.
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: Why keep the coach?
- 1:37:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know why you would, and that's a
- 1:37:47Speaker 3: team that I had a bigger expectation for the Colts
- 1:37:50Speaker 3: before Daniel Jones went out last year. I thought they
- 1:37:53Speaker 3: were one of the best teams in football, but they're
- 1:37:55Speaker 3: 2-5 right now.
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: I read an article, I can't remember which website today,
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: that said Aaron Glenn is likely to get the whole season.
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: There were people that thought that was the end for him.
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: It may ultimately be Sunday.
- 1:38:06Speaker 3: I thought it might have been.
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: Yeah, losing at home to the Dolphins, the lowly Dolphins.
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: But most people think he'll get the whole season. Jim
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: Harbaugh remains the mystery there when you start talking about
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: first coach to get fired because you don't know how
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: patient they're going to be with him. Most of the
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: talk there is, does Mike McDaniel continue calling plays?
- 1:38:23Speaker 3: As of this week, he will.
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: As of this week, he will. But that sounds week
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: to week right now.
- 1:38:27Speaker 5: It does.
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: For Mike McDaniel. So I don't know.
- 1:38:29Speaker 3: And I never foresaw that like where.
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: Did i thought actually it was going to be tremendously
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: i did too.
- 1:38:34Speaker 3: I a six games in and we're already talking about
- 1:38:36Speaker 3: changing the offensive coordinator.
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: Yeah and i just thought that was going to be
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: such a good marriage with him and herbert uh true
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: or false the new york jets trade garrett wilson garrett
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: wilson says he does not want to be traded But
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: the Jets are going nowhere fast, and you could get
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: something for Garrett Wilson.
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: You could, and you're going to ultimately have to reset
- 1:38:55Speaker 3: a quarterback here. Man, I don't know. He is such
- 1:38:58Speaker 3: a talented player, and we've never been able to see
- 1:39:00Speaker 3: him thrive just based on the quarterback situation and how
- 1:39:04Speaker 3: bad the Jets have been. I mean, Geno Smith has
- 1:39:06Speaker 3: been an upgrade, and Garrett Wilson is having his statistically
- 1:39:11Speaker 3: best year right now.
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: I'm going to say that's false. Garrett Wilson says he
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: doesn't want to be traded, but you've got to think
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: from Garrett Wilson's perspective. Here are my options. Garrett Wilson's
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: been in the league three years. Here are my options.
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: I'm either going to continue playing for Geno Smith, not
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: a great option. Or I'm going to play for a
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: rookie quarterback, maybe a worse option. I am completely wrong.
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: Garrett Wilson has been in the league. This is year five.
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: Year five. So, I mean, his clock is starting to
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: tick a little bit. I know that sounds crazy, year five,
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: but how long can you play as a receiver? And
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: so am I going to be stuck playing with Geno
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: Smith or am I going to have to reset with
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: a rookie quarterback and continue to burn years in my career? Boy,
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: I would not want to be a Jet.
- 1:39:56Speaker 3: I mean, I think a lot of people have probably
- 1:39:58Speaker 3: said that.
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: It's historically been a bad idea. You're right about that.
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: True or false, Lamar Jackson returns and torches Buffalo's defense Sunday.
- 1:40:07Speaker 3: I am going to go true there.
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: Look out.
- 1:40:08Speaker 3: I do like the Ravens plus the three on the
- 1:40:11Speaker 3: road here. If there is a weakness for Buffalo, it
- 1:40:14Speaker 3: is that defense. And I think Lamar is going to
- 1:40:17Speaker 3: come out and play extremely well.
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:40:18Speaker 3: You know, last year you missed three games. He said
- 1:40:21Speaker 3: he came back prematurely. He said he would not do
- 1:40:23Speaker 3: that again. So I assume if you're going to see
- 1:40:26Speaker 3: him after this layoff, he's 100%.
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: So that could be one of the more entertaining games
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: of the weekend.
- 1:40:30Speaker 3: Could be, yes.
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: With the way the Buffalo offense plays. This one for
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: Scott on the back row. True or false, the Falcons
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: exit the weekend, halfway point of the NFL season, as
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: the leaders in the NFC South. So to quickly tell
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: you what's going on in the NFC South, the Falcons
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: are at Tampa after tonight Carolina lost is at Green Bay.
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: So if Carolina loses, Falcons win, they've got the South
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: lead halfway home.
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: Right now, Carolina technically has that half game lead at
- 1:40:57Speaker 3: 3-3 over 3-4. I don't want to give away anything
- 1:41:00Speaker 3: that I've got aside tonight in the NFL, but I
- 1:41:03Speaker 3: will just say this. I believe the Falcons are going
- 1:41:06Speaker 3: to lose to Tampa, so I am going to say
- 1:41:09Speaker 3: that is false.
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: Sorry, Scott. We're trying.
- 1:41:11Speaker 3: I don't think Scott, I mean.
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: I don't know where he is on Atlanta right now. Scott,
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: have you checked out on the Falcons? Are you watching?
- 1:41:17Speaker 6: I have not watched very much this season at all.
- 1:41:19Speaker 3: You missed a good one this past Saturday or Sunday.
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: Biggest win of the season, you missed Sunday. True or false,
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: Minnesota ultimately wins the NFC North. Maybe the most difficult
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: division to predict.
- 1:41:34Speaker 3: I'm going to go false, but I'll tell you what.
- 1:41:36Speaker 3: If you pick up a win in Detroit this week,
- 1:41:38Speaker 3: And you go to 7-0.
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: In division. In division.
- 1:41:42Speaker 3: And depending on what Chicago does Monday night in Seattle
- 1:41:45Speaker 3: and obviously what Green Bay does tonight against Carolina, I mean,
- 1:41:49Speaker 3: this could be 7-0 and your closest team behind you
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: could have three losses.
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: You're almost halfway home and you're up three games. That's
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: going to be hard to lose.
- 1:41:58Speaker 3: It's going to be really, really tough. But I'm going
- 1:42:00Speaker 3: to go false.
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:42:01Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: And finally, true or false, the New York Giants win
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: the NFC East.
- 1:42:07Speaker 3: I am going to go true on that. That's crazy.
- 1:42:08Speaker 3: They seem to be the only team that is playing together,
- 1:42:12Speaker 3: if that makes sense. There's so much dysfunction right now
- 1:42:15Speaker 3: with the Cowboys, the Eagles, and the Commanders. And although
- 1:42:18Speaker 3: New York is as beat up as any team in
- 1:42:20Speaker 3: the NFL right now, they continue to play hard for
- 1:42:23Speaker 3: John Harbaugh. So I'm going to go true.
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: I mean, they've got the best coach in that division.
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: You'd say that is true as well. And John Harbaugh.
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: It's too early to say this of J.J. McCarthy. But
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: the way he's playing, do they have the second best
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: quarterback in that division?
- 1:42:41Speaker 3: I still, you know, Dak.
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: No, I'm not saying career-wise. I'm saying the way they're
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: playing right now, though. Dak's number one, the way he's
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: playing right now. That's easy. Would you say, I guess
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: it's a way of saying, is J.J. McCarthy playing better
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: than Jaden Daniels? And we've only seen it. For the
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: last five quarters, yeah. Yeah, I know.
- 1:42:57Speaker 3: But unfortunately, that's what we've seen. Yeah, and I don't
- 1:42:59Speaker 3: know how long that keeps up. We shall see.
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: We shall see. You're right about that. Daniel says, man,
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: if they fire Steichen, he will have a job the
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: next day.
- 1:43:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I think he will too.
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: Yeah, he's well-respected, right?
- 1:43:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: So, I mean, you would hope that's true for him.
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: Barry says, Bo will be fine. I mean, I don't know.
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: They're starting to say that that is the weak link
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: of this Denver team that's got a generationally good defense.
- 1:43:26Speaker 3: Really, really good defense.
- 1:43:27Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: And just, what are you going to do?
- 1:43:30Speaker 3: But, you know, I don't feel like he's got a
- 1:43:33Speaker 3: ton of weapons around him. I'm not trying to make
- 1:43:35Speaker 3: excuses for Bo because something does look off this year.
- 1:43:39Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:43:40Speaker 3: But, again, he doesn't have a semblance of a running attack.
- 1:43:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:43:46Speaker 3: Bo has been okay this year.
- 1:43:49Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:43:49Speaker 3: But he's completing less than 60% of his passes.
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Skitty Banks says, Faults on the Falcons. They are
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: Super Bowl champs of giving faults hope. That's a good
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: one way of putting it. Barry says the Falcons have
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: the most weapons in that division. That's probably true. Barry
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: also says both AFC and NFC North divisions are above 500.
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: I haven't looked at that. That's not something I'm looking
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: at right now. But, I mean, they're... Those are two
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: divisions right now where it's almost impossible to say who's
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: going to win that division.
- 1:44:25Speaker 3: Well, I think you can say who's not going to
- 1:44:27Speaker 3: win the AFC North. I mean, there's no way Cleveland
- 1:44:29Speaker 3: can continue this.
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: Who currently leads it, right?
- 1:44:31Speaker 3: Yeah, them and Pittsburgh sit at top, 5-2, 5-2 Cincinnati.
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: And they play this Sunday.
- 1:44:35Speaker 3: 4-2 and Baltimore at 4-3. I think that thing's going
- 1:44:38Speaker 3: to flip around quickly. I think more difficult to handicap
- 1:44:41Speaker 3: is NFC North. Because I do think all four of
- 1:44:44Speaker 3: those teams could win it. And I do think all
- 1:44:46Speaker 3: four of those teams could be in the postseason. And
- 1:44:47Speaker 3: if that happened.
- 1:44:48Speaker 7: Is.
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: That the first time ever?
- 1:44:50Speaker 3: That would be the first time ever, and then you
- 1:44:52Speaker 3: would have a divisional winner from the West, the South,
- 1:44:54Speaker 3: the East, which means Seahawks and Rams would both be
- 1:44:57Speaker 3: shut out.
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: I mean, that's impossible to believe that you could have
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: the playoffs without one of those two teams.
- 1:45:05Speaker 3: It does seem, based on watching last year and the
- 1:45:08Speaker 3: way everything unfolded, you thought that at least the Rams
- 1:45:11Speaker 3: are going to come back more whole than they were
- 1:45:14Speaker 3: last year.
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: Yeah, that would be impossible to believe. that you could
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: have the postseason without either the Rams. I'm not saying both,
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: but I'm saying either the Rams or the Seahawks.
- 1:45:26Speaker 3: It's not going to surprise me right now.
- 1:45:27Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: Wow, that'd be crazy. We've got some more coming up
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: on the next round. We're not finished here. Obviously, Clay
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: and Buck are going to take over here in just
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: a few moments. We are going to hear what Lane
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: Kiffin actually did say about the SEC to start the
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: show off. Alex Gull is talking about Trinidad Chambliss. I'm
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: going to ask Lance, we're going to go through last week,
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: SEC team that could be looking at a letdown. This week,
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: I teased this earlier. We're going to do the craziest
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: playoff bracket, but Mick surprised us with a visit, Mick Gillespie.
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: So we'll try to put that together on tomorrow's show.
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: What could we see as outcomes moving forward? Legitimate teams
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: that could make the playoffs that would create the craziest
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: playoff bracket. But you probably didn't see this today. On three,
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: talk to 61. I think that's all the group six coaches. 61.
- 1:46:14Speaker 7: 61.
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: And ask, would you be in favor of splitting off
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: and doing your own playoff? Of 61, how many coaches said,
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: write me down for that?
- 1:46:24Speaker 3: Of the 61... Doing.
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: Your own playoff, you are separate. We have a Power
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: 4 playoff plus Notre Dame. I'm going to say this
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: is really close to split. I'm going to go 31-30.
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: It's 40 that said yes. 40 out of 61, which
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: is a surprisingly high number for me.
- 1:46:38Speaker 3: Well, look, it gives you an opportunity to legitimately play
- 1:46:41Speaker 3: for a championship. And then two, it gets you an
- 1:46:44Speaker 3: opportunity to advance your career. I would think that every year,
- 1:46:48Speaker 3: whoever wins this... That group six coach gets another job.
- 1:46:52Speaker 3: Would you agree at the power four?
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, we've already seen the group six. John
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: Summerall made the playoffs, so you would say, okay, well,
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: that was the team that would have won the playoffs. Now, obviously,
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: James Madison did, and they both get good jobs. I mean,
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: Summerall gets a really good job, and Florida Chesney gets...
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: It looks like a better job now. It looks like
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: a better job now than when he found it at UCLA.
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: So that's your example right there. Who was the group
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: team the year before? It was Boise, right?
- 1:47:18Speaker 5: Boise, yeah.
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: Spencer Danielson has been there. I don't know that he's
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: ever going to take another job. He feels like that's
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: kind of his job, right? Oh, I think he's going
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: to get some offers, yeah.
- 1:47:26Speaker 3: And I think, I mean, right now, they're the clear-cut
- 1:47:29Speaker 3: favorite to represent the Group 6 this year.
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: Yeah, that's going to be two out of three years
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: he's taking a team to the playoffs.
- 1:47:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I think he gets in this year. I think
- 1:47:35Speaker 3: he's going to get some offers.
- 1:47:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: I wonder what kind of offer would pry him away
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: from Boise.
- 1:47:42Speaker 5: USC.
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: Well, yeah, but is that who USC would go after,
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: you think?
- 1:47:45Speaker 3: I have absolutely no idea right now.
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: I mean, South Carolina is going to, they're probably going
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: to stick with Beamer. If South Carolina was open, if
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: you're Boise's coach, do you take that job?
- 1:47:55Speaker 3: I don't know. Well, I'd call Steve Spurrier and ask
- 1:47:58Speaker 3: him about it.
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: I would, but I mean, I would have said the
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: same about Kentucky. I'm just being honest with you.
- 1:48:03Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the thing.
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: Spencer Danielson, would you have taken the Kentucky job?
- 1:48:05Speaker 3: I mean, he wouldn't have taken UCLA. He wouldn't have
- 1:48:08Speaker 3: taken Kentucky. He wouldn't have taken Indiana three years ago.
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: And right now, those look like genius jobs to jump at. Yeah,
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, when Cignetti jumped at Indiana, you're like, eh.
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: Guy's old, he's just trying to get a big-time conference.
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: Not even a big-time job, just getting a big-time conference
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: before he dies. And he's turned that into a national
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: championship contender. So I don't know what's good or not anymore.
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: But I would have said the same about Spencer Danielson
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: if he was looking to take the Kentucky job. On three,
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: did that poll, 40 Brett McMurphy and the guys there,
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: 40 of 61, group six coaches say, yes, we should
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: have our own playoff. I guess I would watch that.
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: I think I would.
- 1:48:43Speaker 3: I think I would rather watch that than bowl games.
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. If you had the 2014
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: playoff and another whatever size playoff that is, I think
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: I would watch that over if just two 6-6 teams
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: are battling it out in the Duke's Mayo Bowl.
- 1:48:58Speaker 3: Hey, and why can't we make the Group 6 playoffs
- 1:49:03Speaker 3: in the bowl games?
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: Yeah, that might be a solution there. I mean, just....
- 1:49:09Speaker 3: Because you get crowds built in. You're going to get
- 1:49:12Speaker 3: a better television audience, I would think.
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: The bowl games aren't going to like it because they're
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: going to lose some big names to group six names.
- 1:49:17Speaker 3: But that might be the statement for the bowl games.
- 1:49:19Speaker 3: You've got people opting out right now. People really don't
- 1:49:21Speaker 3: care about these games.
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: Maybe it keeps them in business. All right, that's going
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: to do it for us here on Sporting State. Clay
