- 2:36Good morning Dave? I'm will How are you? Thank you for being here?
- 2:38Okay, I got to ask you a quick question for those that may
- 2:42not know, what is the difference in the name between west Side and Elk
- 2:46City. Explain it? I get this question. Yeah, I bet you
- 2:51do. Go ahead, and the first thing I would say is just you
- 2:54know, it doesn't matter what you call it. It's all part of Charleston.
- 2:58It's all part of our community. Just come down and come shop and
- 3:00come say hi. But the history of the neighborhood. You know, just
- 3:05like other major cities, Charleston's a major city. Were one of fifty capitals.
- 3:08We have micro districts, you know, just like there's Greenwich Village or
- 3:13Hell's Kitchen or other places in New York, we have micro districts on the
- 3:16west side. Elk City used to be its own city, had its own
- 3:21charter with the legislature, had its own mayor, had its own city council.
- 3:24It was annexed by Charleston in the late eighteen nineties, and it tells
- 3:30part of our story. It was designed differently. It was designed to be
- 3:34its own city. So it kind of has its own main street, straddles
- 3:37route what was the original Route sixty. And so the Elk City Historic District
- 3:42sort of celebrates that history and honors it and helps tell our story as a
- 3:46city. See, I've learned something today. I didn't know the history.
- 3:49I didn't know that it was that it was its own city. At one
- 3:52time, I did not know that. How has the gas situation been over
- 3:55there? I've got some more info on the gas situation to get to a
- 3:59little bit later on overall house. How you folks coping with that over there?
- 4:01Yeah? Luckily, I mean it's it's a it's a bad situation.
- 4:05Luckily for at least the tenants on we were on the right side of the
- 4:10or the the the side that wasn't affected by the and then the by the
- 4:15gas water issue. But I said it before and I'll say it now if
- 4:20anybody we we have we have a couple of empty spaces is the former Books
- 4:24and Bruce space at two two two and so it's got a full kitchen,
- 4:28it's warm, you know. I invite people to give me a shout if
- 4:32they need, especially organizations, if they're looking to cook or help help with
- 4:36this situation, Please give me a shout and let me know how I can
- 4:40help with that. It's been an amazing tie. And I had Angie uh
- 4:44Settle on from Health right yesterday talking about a little bit she given and giving
- 4:47out some thanks. But the organizations and the individuals that have come together in
- 4:51that situation over there. But as I said yesterday, that's what West Virginians
- 4:54do. Absolutely, absolutely, Yeah, we'll talk about the development on the
- 4:58White Side. That's why you're here today. You were someone along time with
- 5:02a few others that have sort of led the rebirth of the West Side.
- 5:08Why do you believe in that area so much? Well, so, I'm
- 5:11from a small coal town in southern West Virginia, Thurmond, West Virginia,
- 5:14and growing up I kind of saw that communities, folks moving away, the
- 5:19mines were closing down and getting further further away from from Thurmond. And so
- 5:25I watched my community kind of fall apart around me, and it kind of
- 5:28led this drive for me to want to affect positive change in the communities that
- 5:31I live in. And so when we moved to Charleston, we moved to
- 5:35the West. I lived on Somerset above the Cave on Edgewood, and driving
- 5:40back and forth to school or soccer practice, you know, it reminded me
- 5:43of my hometown in Thurman that I said to myself, Thurmond is Thurmant is
- 5:47probably too gone for for you know, true development or redevelopment as I like
- 5:51to call it. But you know, we're in the capital city here,
- 5:55there's no reason why these buildings should be like this. There's all kinds of
- 5:58opportunities here, and so, you know, I'm just a construction worker.
- 6:03We have a successful construction company. It's really the people that the tenants that
- 6:08the kinship goods, the bully trapped barber shops, echo lit. I'm gonna
- 6:12get in trouble if I if I don't mention everybody, always do just do
- 6:15the best you can. Yeah. Yeah, but those are the people that
- 6:18really make the neighborhood. They're the ones that go and open those doors every
- 6:23day and engage with customers and build our tax base, and so they're really
- 6:27the ones that are doing this. I think I just kind of saw an
- 6:30opportunity and I like working with my hands, and that's kind of how it
- 6:34started. What has been the response from those that were in the community when
- 6:38you came in and you said, look, I want to want to help
- 6:41to redevelop this area. What was the response from some of the people that
- 6:44were there. Generally positive? There has been some some discussions, and you
- 6:50know, there's always the G word, as I call it gentrification, which
- 6:55it's crazy how some people will view that in a positive light. Some people
- 6:58use that word in a negative of light. I think it's it's kind of
- 7:01lost its meaning. It's sort of empty. The gentrification is in Charleston,
- 7:05per se. I can't speak to other people's experiences and what goes on in
- 7:10other cities. But all the buildings that we've done were empty. We've this
- 7:15was an under underinvested area of our community, and these were these were buildings
- 7:24that needed new roofs, needed new storefronts, needed complete upgrades on things.
- 7:29But I'm always trying to always trying to learn more. I'm always trying to
- 7:32meet with community members and see if I'm missing anything or if there's any way
- 7:36that I can I can help. I don't want this to be a project
- 7:40of just like a playground for for wealthy people that come and spend money and
- 7:45quickly in the area and then leave, you know, I think that would
- 7:47be a failure for the vision of what I'd like to see. I want
- 7:50to see true community engagement, like the community coming together, both commercial and
- 7:58residential components of that. And uh. And so I'm always learning, but
- 8:01I think overall it's been a positive reception. And uh. But again,
- 8:05you know, I invite anybody to give me a shout and let me know
- 8:09if I'm missing something or if that there's something that we can do more over
- 8:13there. Talking to Ty Bullock again, a developer on the west side of
- 8:16Charleston, what would you like to see in the future or what are you
- 8:18hearing from people maybe over there that that that's needed in that area. I
- 8:22mean, obviously you want to continue what you've already started, but what are
- 8:24some particular things that that you'd like to see over there? Oh, right
- 8:28off the bat, you know, I always hear about a laundromat. Everybody
- 8:31wants a laundry maat, but no, but you know, I've never built
- 8:33one before. It can be difficult to operate. But if somebody came along
- 8:39and wanted to operate one, we put a business plan together, be happy
- 8:41to do that. But I do hear laundrom out a lot. Recently,
- 8:46we have engaged with Legal Aid of West Virginia. They're currently located on Quarrier
- 8:52Street downtown, but they're they're up and and I, you know, I
- 8:56want to caveat. I can't speak for Legal Aid and I won't speak for
- 8:58Legal Aid, but they uh, they're in a they're in a place that
- 9:03that they're they're ready for their next move, their next big iteration of of
- 9:07of of their mission statement. And I think moving to the West Side is
- 9:11going to be a huge game changer both for UH the community and for Legal
- 9:16Aid because now they'll also have that. Right now, they're they're on like
- 9:20the third or fourth floor of this building downtown. With this new move,
- 9:24they'll have a clinical aspect to they'll be on the ground floor. They'll be
- 9:28able to engage directly with the community. Legal Aid offers pro bono legal services
- 9:33to UH folks that are most in need in our in our communities, and
- 9:37so locating at two five three oh two, which is our area code over
- 9:41there, it's the highest concentration of population, it's the highest concentration of poverty,
- 9:46it's the highest concentration of minorities in our whole state and UH. And
- 9:50so I see some really positive changes with with that being with that move,
- 9:54they should we're shooting for about a year from now to get them into that
- 9:58space. It's in the old STATS Hospital, which everyone knows that that's been
- 10:01the white elephant in the room over there, but one of them. And
- 10:05so it just feels really good to be able to finally figure out what that
- 10:09next iteration of that building is. But I'm always looking for the next project
- 10:13too. I'm always looking to see what's next, What can we build next?
- 10:18What do you think? Tie is the biggest misconception about the West Side
- 10:22and about that part of town that is dangerous. It's not dangerous. We
- 10:26have we have one of the safest cities in America. And you know there
- 10:30there are crimes of opportunity. You know, you might get uh, you
- 10:33might get something if you leave a tool out on the sidewalk, you know,
- 10:37you might not come back in a couple hours, might be gone.
- 10:41But generally speaking, there's no like smashing grabs. We don't have a lot
- 10:45of violent crime. You know, you see in the comments section oftentimes when
- 10:50there's a west Side story about oh well, watch out for the bullets or
- 10:54something like that. It's just those are silly statements. You know, we
- 10:56live in a very safe, tight knit community. People look out for each
- 11:00other. I live over on Indiana Avenue. Me and my neighbors all look
- 11:03out for each other. Never had any problems, So that's that's that's a
- 11:07big misconception. The west Side is a it's a good place. To live
- 11:11and to raise a family. I had a text here for the show about
- 11:13the funding for all the development over there. Has it mainly been private capital?
- 11:18What's come in? Yeah, mainly private, but there have been I
- 11:22have two, well now I have three development companies. My first, my
- 11:26main one is Bullet Properties. That one deals with traditional market rate arms length
- 11:31transactions. If the numbers work, they're bankable, we do it through Bulleck
- 11:35Properties. If there's a historic building or a project that just for some reason
- 11:41isn't bankable, but there's a great community need for it. The Staffs Building
- 11:45is one of those examples, then all it goes into Crawford Holdings. Crawford's
- 11:50my middle name, and uh and so we we we put those into Crawford.
- 11:54If they have a little I call it, have a little bit of
- 11:56hair on the deal, but but they need to be and so we figure
- 12:01out we get the project done. We do a public private partnership. Oftentimes,
- 12:05the Charleston Area Alliance has been tremendous in their help. The Charleston Urban
- 12:09Renewal Authority has been tremendous. We work with an organization formerly known as Natural
- 12:13Capital Investment Fund, now called Partner Community Capital they're based out of Shepherd's Town.
- 12:18They're a nonprofit lender. They're not FDIC insured, so they're able to
- 12:24infuse cash into these projects that have a little bit of hair on them,
- 12:26and then we get them healthy, we get some historic numbers on those projects,
- 12:31and then we roll them into a more bankable deal and then we move
- 12:33on to the next one. So so it's been a it's been an amalgamation
- 12:37of private funding, bank funding, tax credits. UH. The City of
- 12:43Charleston has been incredible with some of the FASAG grant programs they have. So
- 12:46it's just kind of the Schmorcas board of of of putting creative financing together.
- 12:52Todd, do you have a place where people could learn more? If somebody's
- 12:56listening today, they'd like to maybe get involved with what you and the others
- 13:00are doing over on the west side, you have a like a website or
- 13:03a phone number you can give out or something like that, look like more
- 13:05information. Yeah, I'm an open book. My phone number is all over
- 13:09the four rent signs that are down there. Three oh four five five three
- 13:11six three four three. Give me a shout anytime, call me, text
- 13:15me, just reach out. I'm like I said earlier. I'm I'm all
- 13:18ears for and I'm an open book for for trying to figure out, how
- 13:22how can we uh, how can you know? We've got to We've got
- 13:24a declining population in our city, We've got a declining population in our state,
- 13:28and we need to do something about about these kind of things, and
- 13:33we need to we need to invest in our downtowns. That's what i'd say.
- 13:37I think it's really interesting too, and I've had and we'll let you
- 13:39go after this. I've had discussions with other economic development officials, not only
- 13:41here in Charleston, but across the country. With the younger generation. You
- 13:46have the those just beginning of the workforce, maybe just out of college or
- 13:48even you know whatever, young people. Whereas my general I'm a GenAm,
- 13:54classic Gen X, you know, we wanted to be raised families, whatever
- 13:58kind of away from the city. We want to be in the suburbs.
- 14:01And maybe the generation just ahead of us, you know, the baby boomers
- 14:03did that as well. But with the younger generation, I'm talking early twenties
- 14:09to maybe or early thirties, they seem to want to be downtown. And
- 14:15I'm not talking about just in Charles I'm talking about nationwide. They want to
- 14:16be where they can walk to things. Automobiles are a big deal, but
- 14:22maybe not as big a deal as what it was for us. We wanted
- 14:24to be able to have a two car garage, you know, and cardboard
- 14:28or whatever. But a lot of these people they want to be able to
- 14:31ride their bike. They want to be able to walk to these places.
- 14:35Breweries are huge, art is huge, experiences are huge. It's just kind
- 14:39of a I'm kind of a geek about this stuff. I guess it's just
- 14:41kind of different in the different in the different age groups. And that's what
- 14:46we need more of in West virgin I'm fifty three, not me. You
- 14:48need people that are a lot younger than that to want to come in,
- 14:52and it seems like you're kind of offering that on the West Side. Yeah.
- 14:56Yeah, I think, you know, cities go through life cycles,
- 14:58and uh, you know, post World War Two, we we as you
- 15:03say, we have sort of the cul de Sac movement, white picket fences
- 15:07and people. Yeah, they we sort of left our downtowns, we disinvested
- 15:09in our downtowns. And I think we're we're moving back and we in some
- 15:13ways we kind of ignored thousands of years of city development, you know,
- 15:18heuristic things that we learned just through natural, organic downtown living, kind of
- 15:24living next to each other, walking to work, walking to the parks.
- 15:28So yeah, I like to I'd like to think that I'm helping us in
- 15:31this part of our community. Sort of get back to that. You know,
- 15:35we we do a lot of mixed use components. We have apartments above
- 15:39these these shops that we have. That's how it used to be. So
- 15:41sometimes you'll have the shop owner living upstairs, so the lights don't turn off
- 15:45after five o'clock. The neighborhood doesn't die after five o'clock. You still got
- 15:48people walking their dogs, cooking dinner on the second, third floors of these
- 15:52buildings. And that's the way it used to be. And uh, and
- 15:54so you know, i'd like to I'd like to help our our city with
- 16:00its next iteration ty interesting stuff. I could spend an entire show talk about
- 16:04stuff, because I said, I'm kind of a geek about this stuff.
- 16:07I'm kind of a geek in general. But I appreciate you being here.

- 19:17to join us a little bit later on this horrific story of this double murder
- 19:19in Charleston. Yesterday. I just can't get this image out of my head
- 19:22and what I was reading and hearing yesterday and this morning. Jeff's going to
- 19:26join us with the newsroom. There have been some developments in that story in
- 19:29Jeff will join us to talk about that a little bit later on. Rob
- 19:32Corneli Us is here. I never know how to address you, Rob.
- 19:36Are you Republican, operative, Republican strategists all around? Good guys? Advocate
- 19:41for America, Advocate for America. Rob Corneli, I like that. You
- 19:45know that's fair. We've done that a few times, and Robbie reached out
- 19:49to me last week about coming on today to share a story. Now we
- 19:53can add investigative reporter at least investigative investigator to your title. Well, I
- 19:59mean I'm always working on something. I'll put it in the hands of Brad
- 20:02or one of the other able journalists in the state. But I think a
- 20:06big turn is a big story about month, month and a half ago in
- 20:08Charleston that I don't think anybody's really followed up on a going forward on.
- 20:11There was a dude who was working through COVID at DHHR and related departments,
- 20:17got federally indicted about six weeks ago, and the charge was for effectively line
- 20:22to the Feds lined no grand jury. But the underlying stuff was the state
- 20:26had been cheated by a vendor on COVID tests. State had sent him about
- 20:30forty plus million to an out of state vendor called Maverick Labs, which didn't
- 20:33really seem to have any history or basis other than a couple of corporate filings.
- 20:37And this guy, pretty tim pretty as a dude works for the government,
- 20:41was let go from this job and was accused by the FEDS of lying
- 20:45to them because apparently he invoice let this company in voice the state for forty
- 20:49million of our dollars and only had proof they had done about ten fifteen percent
- 20:53of the tests which the state had been built at eighty to one hundred dollars
- 20:56a crack. And it's it's kind of a bigger thing. I think it
- 20:59was going to be a lot more prosecutions coming from this US attorney down here.
- 21:03Over all the money slashing around during COVID and how a lot of it's
- 21:07gone into money heaven and local pockets and out of state pockets. But this
- 21:11is just really really fascinating. And this this company seemed to appear out of
- 21:15nowhere, this Maverick Health, Maverick Labs, out of Florida. There's no
- 21:21real ties here. There's no obvious tie except for one if you start going
- 21:25back through their corporate filings, one of two things is true. They are
- 21:29either an arm or a wing of United Health and a company called Optum who
- 21:33provides all the state health insurance PIA is one of the biggest state contracts in
- 21:37the state, or they're faking it and they're using their information to start this
- 21:41business and run all this lab testing with the US traorne As says, the
- 21:45state's already been cheated out or probably in the area of forty million dollars just
- 21:48for starters. I mean, how did you stumble onto this? I mean,
- 21:53what are the idea for you to look into this? I read the
- 21:56indictment of this tim pretty guy again. He was a mid level staffer at
- 22:02DHHR and apparently his pay doubled and tripled during COVID because he was working a
- 22:06ton of overtime. There prayers be some questions about that as well, but
- 22:08doesn't appear to be any sort of criminal mastermind or anything like that. But
- 22:11all through this indictment that references to this company a that he was doing business
- 22:15with, that he was in communications with, and while he got in trouble,
- 22:18he apparently, based on what we're reading the indictment of the allegations,
- 22:21he just basically lied to the FBI and said he was doing his job checking
- 22:25all these contracts. If we send out ten million dollars, then there is
- 22:29you know, ten thousand COVID tests to go with it or over to match,
- 22:30and apparently none of that was getting done, but he told him it
- 22:33was. It's classic. This guy apparently was doing a terrible job at his
- 22:36job and didn't want to tell Spior someone who asked him problems me a lie
- 22:40to the FEDS you're a line of the FEDS. That's felony. Well,
- 22:42why I was in Company A is listed all through this indictment, and the
- 22:45indictment is clearly telling you a story. More is coming. Company A is
- 22:48in trouble. Who the heck is Company A? And Maverick Labs is a
- 22:52company It just started in West Virginia. I think that the formation date in
- 22:56max office was into twenty twenty and was all of a sudden immediately k new
- 23:00business in twenty twenty one. In other states, Maverick Labs had operated under
- 23:03the name Optum Labs. Optum is the biggest division of United Health. So
- 23:10why would then all this testing with whose state being done at you know,
- 23:12VFDs, drug stores everywhere, you know, back when we're doing like Obama
- 23:17Obama phone tents, but for testing everywhere? Why was an out of state
- 23:21provider on an emergency contract getting the bulk of the work over three or four
- 23:26local vendors who also are I think the states still not paying to some extent
- 23:30a lot there are a lot of money a lot of the local vendors and
- 23:33people obviously questions for everybody, you know, what's what's going on, Who's
- 23:37cheating the government. But if you have an out of state concern getting all
- 23:40this stuff and they're tied to somebody much bigger, United Health and Florida,
- 23:44there's a lab number, there's an NPI number. If you're a doctor or
- 23:47a nurse, an NPI. Basically every health facility, pharmacy, doctor,
- 23:51clinic, van kind has an NPI, which is like an EI NI so
- 23:53security number for your medical office. The NPI all these tests go back to,
- 23:57and all their corporate funds go back to is to a United Health lab
- 24:02and a medical building in West Palm. So your your prediction would be that
- 24:07eventually there are going to be some major heads going to roll in this and
- 24:10some men dive as Will Thompson's gonna get involved with that. What you're saying,
- 24:12I think so, and this this company, all the names, it
- 24:15goes back to his three or four dudes in Florida who have New York ties.
- 24:18A couple of guys went to Columbia. But guys have no ties here,
- 24:21No no plot thickens. I mean, there's there's they have no obvious
- 24:23tie here other than one of two things. They're they're they're cheating, they're
- 24:27where they're attempting to cheat, you know, rip off simps here or someone
- 24:33if they are with United Health, someone directed that contract, because the United
- 24:36Health is a huge provider here in the state, huge, the biggest.
- 24:38If you're ever going to p I A and I file with p I A,
- 24:41that card in your wallet, that's United Health. That's your health management
- 24:45organization or more equivalent. Are other you mentioned, you know, having talks
- 24:48of Brad and some other folks in the and in the media. I do
- 24:52a lot of things outside you know that when you know a lot of I
- 24:55won't speak for them, but a lot of times when a Brad or a
- 24:56Steve Adams or somebody has something good, I probably done something like work.
- 25:00And I've been doing this for twenty years. Usually it's political. Usually it's
- 25:03you know, break somebody's jaw. But this is just interesting. Not literally,
- 25:07No, it's a metaphor. Everything was a metaphor, Dave, everything's
- 25:10a metal. But this is this is very, very curious. And I
- 25:12think Will Thompson and and the FEDS, the guys down the street understand who
- 25:18company is beyond just Maverick Labs and Maverick Health. I mean it's a comedy
- 25:22company. One of their websites literally is one of those like pre format of
- 25:26websites. We just take what's there, says they do line care, trash
- 25:29removal, oh and medical testing. Well yeah, that it makes perfect sense.
- 25:33It's like we use that Latin in your word press or whatever. You
- 25:36can tell it's fake. How fake. They already know. It's probably thirty
- 25:38five or forty million dollars fake. At least that's what the indictment says.
- 25:41Wow, interesting stuff. Twenty seven minutes away from Tampa, day Vallance showing
- 25:45five eighty live broad to apartment Pinnacle Consultants. You know, we spend ninety
- 25:48percent of our time indoors, and our health risk for air pollution can be
- 25:52greater indoors than outs. Pinnacle Consultancy only accredited commercial lab in the state for
- 25:56as best to said Mold, there's a Pinnacle Corp. Dot net because what
- 25:59you don't know can't hurt you. I want to get you your take on
- 26:02some political things here with mister Corneliyes. What do you think of Senator Mansion
- 26:06not running for reelection. I think he's going to go fight windmills for a
- 26:08couple of months and be a celebrity and have people want him calling Mitt Romney
- 26:14get a lot of attention, But I don't think that third party thing goes
- 26:17very far. If you understand the mechanics of how hard it is to get
- 26:18people on a ballot in fifty states plus territories where they're all asynchronous, they
- 26:23all operate on different schedules, different requirements, so many petitions, some need
- 26:27money, some have a different calendar. I think the odds of getting anyone
- 26:32on that many ballots is hard. And again, how do you agree on
- 26:34three guys that nobody really likes but we always kind of think okay? And
- 26:38that being like say him Romney and that Maryland governor, who are all playing
- 26:41around in this process? Yah, Larry. I mean, the whole thing
- 26:44about the middle is people don't have strong feelings about the middle. How do
- 26:47you get folks to vote for someone who is branding themselves in the middle,
- 26:51you know, if you're not forced to make some sort of comprorise, people
- 26:53go to one pole or the other. It seems to me that the middle,
- 26:59and maybe I kind of fall in that category sometimes, but the middle
- 27:02just seems like people that are just poed at the other two sides, right,
- 27:06and The problem is when you give them a middle choice, one of
- 27:08these three guys with some other vanilla choice, it's not a very strong magnet.
- 27:11It doesn't pull people along. People will say to you in a poll,
- 27:15yeah, I want a nice moderate position, but they never choose that.
- 27:17When you give them three ice cream flavors, they never pick vanilla or
- 27:19beige or whatever metaphor you have for boring or mental. People say that's what
- 27:23they want. They really have the courage to vote for it. What about
- 27:26the Senate race between Governor Justice and Congressman Alex Money, Well, you saw
- 27:30the spin start up a million bucks in for Mooney. Mitch mcconnel's people are
- 27:36coming in with about four hundred k for Justice, which they need to do
- 27:38because he doesn't have the ability to spend money. That's the bigger issue.
- 27:44I mean, if there's a fastball coming in that race, it's five days
- 27:47away. It's in a court in Martinsville, Virginia on Monday, where they're
- 27:51going to tell Carter Bank, who the governor owes hundreds and millions of dollars
- 27:53to, whether they can take his stuff or not. You know, if
- 27:56you want to buy the Greenbrier booth Goodwin's numbers in the boat firms down the
- 28:00street. But that's what this is down to. Like there's long, story
- 28:04is short. The very vast simplification of this is does Carter Bank get to
- 28:07sell the Governor's stuff or not? And that's on Monday, and Carter Bank
- 28:11is in real trouble because they can't sell the governor's stuff and get a three
- 28:14hundred million plus he owes them in the first trunch. Ten percent of their
- 28:18assets, ten percent of their loans are with the governor like that three hundred
- 28:22million. That's the entire value of their stock. If they don't get that,
- 28:25their post regularly should come in a long time ago. So they need
- 28:27this process to speed up, and they if they're looking for buyers of the
- 28:32Greenbrier, I guess i'd call Booth Stuart Stuart versus mccusky for ag mccusky one
- 28:40hundred percent. There's not a worse person on our side than Make Stewart.
- 28:42Why do you say them? Who wants to talk to him, who wants
- 28:47to be around him? Is there a worst clubhouse guy who talks more than
- 28:49Max Stewart? No? He is absolutely well harsh, don't you think rong
- 28:56worst clubhouse guy I've ever met. Period. Okay, people don't want to
- 29:00be around him. Find some friends of his. I'm sure he's got friends,
- 29:03are you sure? Well? I mean I would think keep looking.
- 29:08Greg Thomas when he's on the show, says that Patrick Morrise is the worst
- 29:11human being ever. Yeah. Well Greg's wrong sometimes too, so am I
- 29:15That's going to be an interesting race, But I think it's Patrick's to win
- 29:18New Pole yesterday as a plus plus fifteen plus sixteen. What do you think
- 29:22of him not taking part in the debate tonight? Doesn't matter, doesn't need
- 29:26to be there. See, I got I got issues with it. I
- 29:27got issues with Trump not being in the presidential debate too, But I have
- 29:30issues with Trump. So the only people that complain about the debates and people
- 29:33who aren't winning on any side, well a, but people that are on
- 29:36the outside though, I mean, like you get people that are just regular
- 29:38dudes, you know, that want to want to hear what he has to
- 29:41say, and he's not giving them that. I'm not saying he won't.
- 29:42He will eventually, but no how I figure he will. He's certainly not
- 29:47going to hide from hide from a camera. He doesn't do that. I'll
- 29:49give you that, but no, the problem is people are not going to
- 29:52make the decision based on whether someone doesn't debate. They're clearly not going to.
- 29:56That's not that's not a deciding factor. Going to signing these candidates based
- 30:00on policy if they care enough to vote. And again, a primary voter
- 30:03cares enough to find out. People who just vote in the general in an
- 30:07every four year presidentially are a different voter than people who are going to show
- 30:10up for this one. Talk about then, I keep hearing that Chris Miller
- 30:12goes Chris Miller is a very wealthy individual. He's not going to run from
- 30:15that. I mean, he'll tell you that. I mean that Chris Miller
- 30:18is going to put a whole lot of money into this race after the first
- 30:22of the year, and that it could be enough to hop he was talking
- 30:25about cliches or to move the needle. Do you think that that that's the
- 30:29case. I think he's the only one in that race with any room to
- 30:32grow substantially more. Patrick can grow to fifty. Miller can clearly grow much
- 30:37higher than the ten or whatever he is in the most recent racket polling.
- 30:41The issue with that is you're in a four way race, there's not a
- 30:45lot of undecided. His newest poll came out yesterday as undecided. I went
- 30:48fifteen sixteen seventeen in that area. It's not forty or seventy like in these
- 30:52down ticket races. No one's ever heard of these people running for ouditor or
- 30:55actimission or whatever. You have less room to grow, you have a shorter
- 30:57runway, and you have a narrower one becausehen people were already committed to Mac
- 31:02or Patrick or somebody else. You've got to make the sale to one,
- 31:06strip them away, bring them through undecided or a middle unaffiliated, and then
- 31:11bring them through to you. And that's not an instant process. It's not
- 31:14like one ad for Chris Miller will all of a sudden twenty people off of
- 31:17Patrick directly to Chris Miller. That's impossible. That's not how this works.
- 31:22It's never one piece of information unless it's something ludicrous like folks and cheap or
- 31:26whatever. It is. Literally, it's a process. The cheap reference we've
- 31:30had on the show in a lot fair No, but you have to start
- 31:33early, and you have to move people through independent, around affiliated to give
- 31:36them to you. And a race where eighty five percent of people at least
- 31:38have a horse already or at least starting with one that's harder to do.
- 31:42This is not a Bill Maloney a twenty eleven situation where seven er cent of
- 31:47people have no idea before the race starts. What do you think of Steve
- 31:51Williams, the Huntington mayor, former legislator. He is going to be the
- 31:55Democratic nominee. My take on Steve Williams, I think Steve has been an
- 32:00effective mayor in Huntington. I spent a lot of time in Huntington. If
- 32:04you see Huntington now compared to what Huntington used to be, it's got its
- 32:07issues, but it's way better now that it used to be. I think
- 32:10he's probably I mean he's not Steven Smith, which is a good thing.
- 32:13I think he's probably going to be the best, the best option that they
- 32:17have on the Democratic side. It still has no chance in my opinion.
- 32:21But your take on Steve Williams, he's he's a very nice man. I'm
- 32:25glad he's taking this opportunity to run and fill the ballot. You know,
- 32:29there's a little bit of mansion there. He'll do better with women because women
- 32:30will think he's pretty. The older women love Joe Mansion. Older women will
- 32:36love Steve Williams, but not enough to move the needle. This is still
- 32:37a sixty five thirty five and two to one kind of race. But I'm
- 32:40glad they're at least putting on someone who's not insane. So that is really
- 32:45nice progress. So you think, as it stands right now, you think
- 32:46Patrick Morris will be the next governor West Virginia. Yeah, barring barring some
- 32:51sort of huge externalities. Yes see, because I know a lot of the
- 32:54Chamber of Commerce type folks. I don't mean necessarily the Chamber of Commerce,
- 32:58but I mean a lot of those type business people. They're wrong a lot.
- 33:02Well, but they're hitching their wagon to Chris Miller because he's a businessman.
- 33:06Well, no, they're hitching their wagon to work, happitough. But
- 33:07what I've been a lot of are hitching their wagon to car dealers. Chris
- 33:12millerber card dealer's another chamber. That's a different issue. I'll put it this
- 33:15way. Anything you hear from anyone in Charleston that lives in two five three
- 33:19one four that's the zip code up the hill up around GW, ignore it.
- 33:22Because it's almost always wrong politically. I've said that for twenty years.
- 33:24I've been writing a lot. Don't listen to those people. All they do
- 33:28is talk to each other and don't have any sense for what's going on in
- 33:30Jane lou period. All right, let me get this one in here,
- 33:32Secretary of States race. It's crowded field. Putnam County Clerk Brian Wood,
- 33:37Delegate Chris Pritt, former Delegate Ken Reid, former House Minority later Democrat turned
- 33:40Republican dougts Cat tomorrow night, expected during an event at the Culture Center on
- 33:44the Capitol grounds at former state Party chair Chris Warner, brother of Mac current
- 33:49holder of that office, is expected to announce he's going to run for that
- 33:52seat that his brother currently holds. Yeah, it was amazing when he bankrupted
- 33:57the state Republican Party. The time they let him be in charge. I'm
- 34:00not sure necessarily the winners in that field. Yet the strongest hand to play
- 34:04and hands me a little to say this is a scaffhand because I know it
- 34:07can spend the money. I don't know that anyone else there can or will
- 34:10spend the money. Read spend a little bit of money. When he ran
- 34:13for Congress in fourteen, if you brought that level of money into it again,
- 34:17maybe he's got a shot, so he's from panhandled person. But in
- 34:22my mind, the hand I'd want is the scaff hand. What about Brian
- 34:27would? I mean Brian Wood? Here's there's really to know about Brian Wood.
- 34:29He's county clerk. Yep, he's going to have the support of the
- 34:31other county course because he's one of them, you know, probably down a
- 34:36little bit on the money. He can't compete with the money wise, but
- 34:38I don't think anybody's going to outwork the guy. I mean your thoughts.
- 34:42It's a very southern West Virginia thought. What's the value of everyone in the
- 34:45courthouse knowing everybody to every other the courthouse? How much influence those people have?
- 34:49And the problem is once some money hits this race and someone's willing to
- 34:53spend low six figures and that changes everything period. You know. I wish
- 34:59it was that. I wish everyone. I wish we could have a nice
- 35:01four hundred level poly syd class chat every day on the show. I wish
- 35:05we could just meet people and win with reality. If someone slaps four and
- 35:07a grand on a table and move to the front of that line. It's
- 35:09a money gang because it's any money is speech. Yeah, like it or
- 35:14not, money is speech. It is rare that anyone is clever enough or
- 35:17good enough at this to get enough free media. The only person can do
- 35:22that's Trump doesn't need to spend. I like the governor doesn't have to spend.
- 35:25All right, let me get your take on this. And it's about
- 35:29you. Oh cool, there is because I know you love you some you
- 35:30sometimes you don't love yourself. Who will? All right? So there has
- 35:36been some speculation that you yourself, mister Canelius. Last year were at a
- 35:39time you were on the show, you kind of alluded that you might look
- 35:44at running for some sort of an office. At some point we talked about
- 35:46auditor. As good as I would be at that, I'm probably not in.
- 35:51Again, you need to be able to self finance that. I'm not
- 35:52sure the winners in that field yet, I don't know. Again, someone
- 35:58shows up and slaps low six figures on table, moved to the front of
- 36:00the line, and no one's in that race. He has done that or
- 36:02showing the ability to do that. When they do, they move to the
- 36:06front of the line. The one complicating factor personally, of the three householder
- 36:10by far the best. He's an adult, you know, he's got experience
- 36:14doing this. He wants to do the right stuff. But he's not going
- 36:16to have all the Eastern Panhandle vote. If the lady from Jefferson County stays
- 36:19in, that's gonna be split. If you can come out in that race,
- 36:22it raises no money. Got six people no money. If you're the
- 36:23only person with the Eastern Panhandle, that's a great start. If we're all
- 36:29playing with no resources. But if they're going to split the EP and that
- 36:30that really weakens him. So you're out though, basically, that's what I'm
- 36:35saying. You've did at this point. You've got some other here's the thing
- 36:37moving. You have some other things that you can't because you're like me.
- 36:40You've got like fifteen other jobs, fifty others that you do. Yeah,
- 36:44one one, I do some radio in another state, and the second I
- 36:46announced for something. I'm off that. But the bigger picture is, frankly,
- 36:52money and timing. If if I get a check between now and January
- 36:55twenty sixth or whatever, so listening funds, yeah, I'm not so listening
- 37:00no check, but yes I get it all right. Well, you know,
- 37:02I know you do a lot with Ohio University. Tonight you sound state
- 37:06basketball. Well, let me just say you need to do something about your
- 37:08highway patrol officers. I got because I got my first speeding ticket in thirty
- 37:13seven years of driving on my way to Ohio University's campus, and I'm not
- 37:16happy about it. Oh yeah, because you were there to film a couple
- 37:19of West Virginia kids that are playing on our teams. Yes, we have
- 37:22a gwkd on men's basketball. He's red shirting this year. Ben and gull
- 37:25on women's basket team for Parkersburg. Maddie. Yeah, well maybe I shouldn't
- 37:30have been doing seventy three and a fifty five. It was a little hot
- 37:31in Meg's County. They have nothing to do but ticket on that super too,
- 37:36Just just trust well for what it's worth, the comprovise. The couple
- 37:37was super super nice about op pros. He said, oh, he said,
- 37:42I got to give you a citation and I said, I'll accept that.
- 37:44Ohps, total pros. I wish we had that setup. Are our
- 37:46state troopers get stuck doing off the map stuff like the glorified shaff stuff OHP's
- 37:52a good operation. Yeah, well they got they got this. They got

- 41:14A man is in custody after allegedly stabbing his mother and a ten year old
- 41:16boy to Death's a bizarre story. Jeff Jenkins joins us from the newsroom to
- 41:21talk about it. Jeff, Good Morning, The story's posted on the website.
- 41:24What do we know this morning? Okay, so what's new this morning,
- 41:27Dave is now Charleston Police have released the name of the mother, who
- 41:32is cost sixty two year old Sherry Gene Russell. And so it's a lessa.
- 41:39That's her son. And you've got his name right there in front of
- 41:42you. He allegedly got it right there. Yeah. Actually I don't have
- 41:47it right in front of maybe. Okay, okay, I'm sorry, I
- 41:50didn't bring up No, actually been saying it all morning. Yeah, I
- 41:52don't have it just anyway. She So he is charged with killing his mother
- 42:00and a ten year old boy. Now we don't have really much beyond that
- 42:07other than he's charged with killing. And what we do know, according to
- 42:09the criminal complaint, is that he showed up at Dutch Miller Auto down on
- 42:15a Corcor Avenue in South Charleston yesterday afternoon and told a worker there he was
- 42:22looking for a car because he had just killed somebody or killed a couple of
- 42:25people. So, of course police responded. They found out where that was,
- 42:31where he said that was, They responded, and this is folks are
- 42:37familiar, this is Vandalia Terrace. So Vendelia Terrace apartments are basically right off
- 42:45Canal Turnpike right on the South Charleston Charleston line, so it's like a stone's
- 42:51throw from Joplin Park in South Charleston, so it's kind of in. It's
- 42:53in that and you access those actually from Canau Turnpike right there near South Trust,
- 43:00although they were in Charles's Trust's City police are investigating. That's where the
- 43:04bodies were found in one of the apartments and criminal complaints say that both of
- 43:08them were stabbed, the mother up in the neck area and it just didn't
- 43:14give a lot of details on the boy but just saying that he died of
- 43:16stab wound. So and his name has not been real Yeah, the person,
- 43:22the perpetrator, this is Nicholas David Hanshaw. That was his name.
- 43:25And I can't imagine Jeff just trying to be, you know, somebody working
- 43:29there in Dutch Miller and just you know, normal normal day at the car
- 43:31dealership when somebody comes in covered in blood, was splattered splattered in what it
- 43:37was saying, I need to buy a car because I just killed someone.
- 43:40And we find out later it's Shulman's mother and a ten year old and obviously
- 43:46there's no motive at this point. We don't have it from Charleston police.
- 43:52I don't know if they exactly know. I mean, I'm sure they're trying
- 43:54to, you know, trying to investigate to see what that was. I
- 43:59don't know right now, the ten year old boys connection, was it,
- 44:02you know, A grandson, a son. I mean, we just you
- 44:07know, we don't know that. You know, we don't know that right
- 44:09now. So hopefully there'll be more information. But you know, it was
- 44:14actually pretty quick, pretty quick work by police, and I mean they only
- 44:19found out about because he shows up at this dealership Hanshaw does and that's how,
- 44:24you know, everybody kind of got on it. But it's tragic and
- 44:30to say the least. And so we'll find out more information. He's he's
- 44:34in jail without bail. He was arraigned, and so that's that's where it
- 44:37is, all right, Jeff's a bizarre, tragic story. I appreciate you
- 44:40joined us man. We'll following up the city, the place open and get
- 44:44some more information. You're going to be available on the air and on all
- 44:45the websites of the socials, all right, Jeff, I appreciate it man.
