Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, guys, welcome to another episode of Eating While Broke.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I'm your host, Coleen Witt, and today we have very
- 0:05Speaker 1: special guests Kiki from Cocktails Podcasts in the building. Hey
- 0:10Speaker 1: you guys, thank.
- 0:12Speaker 2: You for coming.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Oh yeah for having me. Yeah. We are in Atlanta today,
- 0:16Speaker 1: hanging out at eighty five South Studio. Shout outs to y'all. Yes,
- 0:21Speaker 1: thank you guys for that. So what are you going
- 0:23Speaker 1: to have me eating today? Today? We are going to
- 0:26Speaker 1: have a ramen noodle sturfry Ramen noodlef with chicken and
- 0:30Speaker 1: some vegetables. I love this because I usually hate ramen
- 0:34Speaker 1: on the show to death. Yeah, m in again. No, okay,
- 1:03Speaker 1: so this is a stuff fry, so I'm not eating soup.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Show me how it's done. What are the ingredients? Okay,
- 1:08Speaker 1: so water?
- 1:09Speaker 3: Of course, I'm gonna season the water before I end
- 1:12Speaker 3: up adding the noodles, just waiting for it to get
- 1:14Speaker 3: a little hotter, and then I like to add more seasonings.
- 1:18Speaker 3: So I'm still gonna put that little seasoning packet in there.
- 1:21Speaker 3: So I won't add any more salt because it's pretty
- 1:23Speaker 3: salty to me, a little soy sauce siracha, so like
- 1:27Speaker 3: a little spice, garlic powder, onion powder, and pepper. And
- 1:32Speaker 3: then like when I was making this, I would just whatever.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Maybe I had like some leftover chiyokey sauce from Chinese food,
- 1:39Speaker 3: or hoisten or oyster if I was lucky. I had
- 1:42Speaker 3: to be really, I probably came from a date if
- 1:44Speaker 3: I had some oyster sauce left. But I would just
- 1:47Speaker 3: use whatever kind of Asian flavors I might have on hand.
- 1:51Speaker 3: That's how it started. And then I was just mixing
- 1:53Speaker 3: stuff up, okay, and so yeah.
- 1:55Speaker 1: And then I noticed on your original on the original
- 1:58Speaker 1: crawl sheet, you said, bro oh, yeah, I like to
- 2:00Speaker 1: use chicken broth.
- 2:02Speaker 3: An that instead of the water mm hmm instead of
- 2:05Speaker 3: the water, or sometimes I'll add it to the water.
- 2:09Speaker 3: It just makes it more flavorful. I do it with rice,
- 2:11Speaker 3: I do it with grits. I do it with all
- 2:13Speaker 3: sorts of stuff.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I learned that.
- 2:14Speaker 3: I'm probably watching Food Network. But yeah, I like to
- 2:16Speaker 3: put a little broth in it so it's flavorful. I
- 2:18Speaker 3: don't want it to just taste like salt and noodles.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Have you ever done like coconut milk added to rice?
- 2:23Speaker 1: It is so random? Yes, how did it come out good.
- 2:26Speaker 1: It was good.
- 2:28Speaker 3: It tastes like coconut.
- 2:30Speaker 1: You added a lot, yeah, okay, not like a little bit. Yeah,
- 2:34Speaker 1: Like my mom's just making and she'll put a little
- 2:37Speaker 1: bit in. Yeah. Let me guess that would.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Be my phone.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Do you know how to silence those films? Okay? I made.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Like jerk chicken or something really spicy, and I decided
- 2:52Speaker 3: I wanted to try coconut milk in the rice so
- 2:54Speaker 3: that the rice would be a little sweeter to like
- 2:56Speaker 3: work with that. One day I was trying something.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and once that water does.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Boil, you know, noodles only take a couple of minutes.
- 3:03Speaker 3: So I'm gonna go ahead and put some butter in
- 3:06Speaker 3: this other skillet so that we can stir fry the veggies.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I'll call a stirf far.
- 3:15Speaker 3: We'll see what happens today.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Yeah, a little bit of stir fry. I like that.
- 3:20Speaker 1: So take me back to what was going on in
- 3:23Speaker 1: the life of Gangsteren Surfry.
- 3:27Speaker 3: So when I first started making this, I was so broke.
- 3:31Speaker 3: I was at college and I was far away from home.
- 3:35Speaker 3: I was all the way in DC. I graduated high
- 3:37Speaker 3: school in Texas, and it was just really hard. My
- 3:41Speaker 3: rent was really high. I was working, I was a
- 3:43Speaker 3: full time student. I ate a lot of noodles, and
- 3:47Speaker 3: it gets boring and I don't really like leftovers. And sometimes,
- 3:50Speaker 3: as irresponsible as this was, I would spend money on
- 3:53Speaker 3: better quality foods. But sometimes you know, the account is
- 3:55Speaker 3: already overdrawn and the bank is only gonna let you
- 3:58Speaker 3: do it so much. So it's in the gree store
- 4:00Speaker 3: one day and I was getting some noodles, like one
- 4:03Speaker 3: of the little value packs with multiples in there, because
- 4:05Speaker 3: I'm like, I guess this is what I'm eating for
- 4:06Speaker 3: the week until I get paid. And I saw this little,
- 4:10Speaker 3: this little cookbook at the register. It was like a dollar,
- 4:13Speaker 3: so I bought it. It was like one hundred and one
- 4:15Speaker 3: ways to make ramen. So I was like, oh, good,
- 4:17Speaker 3: because I need some inspiration. So I get home, I'm
- 4:19Speaker 3: looking at it, and so a lot of the recipes
- 4:22Speaker 3: it was just stuff I already had in the cabinet,
- 4:24Speaker 3: or stuff I could get eventually that was cheap, and
- 4:27Speaker 3: so that's what I came up with it. But college
- 4:30Speaker 3: was just so rough, and there were so many times
- 4:32Speaker 3: where I was scared, like I wasn't going to graduate.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I wasn't. I was going to have to move back home.
- 4:37Speaker 3: I was going to be embarrassed. Most of my family
- 4:41Speaker 3: has gone to college and at least gotten their bachelor's degree,
- 4:45Speaker 3: and then I'm the oldest of my siblings. Not only
- 4:47Speaker 3: did I want to make my parents proud, I wanted
- 4:49Speaker 3: to be proud of myself. I wanted my siblings to
- 4:51Speaker 3: be proud of me. And I just I was stressed.
- 4:55Speaker 3: And yeah, college was fun. I had some amazing times,
- 4:59Speaker 3: but I did not a lot in college. And I
- 5:01Speaker 3: remember one of my best friends. I made this and
- 5:04Speaker 3: then we ate it at my apartment and then we
- 5:07Speaker 3: went to school because I had like a project do.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I stayed up in the lab.
- 5:12Speaker 3: I was editing a news REORP project and well news package,
- 5:17Speaker 3: and we were up for probably like we probably went
- 5:21Speaker 3: down there at like nine pm. I was there till
- 5:24Speaker 3: like noon the next day, and he stayed with me
- 5:26Speaker 3: so that I would get it done, because if I
- 5:28Speaker 3: didn't get it turned in by that afternoon, I was
- 5:29Speaker 3: not going to graduate. And I went to Howard. They
- 5:32Speaker 3: don't do that whole Oh you got six credits left.
- 5:34Speaker 3: You can still walk the stage, so you don't have
- 5:36Speaker 3: to be shame in front of your family. No, if
- 5:37Speaker 3: you don't have all your credits, you are not going.
- 5:39Speaker 1: So oh yeah, it was a stressful time, okay, but
- 5:43Speaker 1: I made it. I made make it okay good, So
- 5:45Speaker 1: family was proud. Did all your siblings end up following
- 5:48Speaker 1: your footsteps?
- 5:48Speaker 3: And you know what, not a single one of them
- 5:51Speaker 3: followed in my footsteps. Now, some of my siblings did
- 5:56Speaker 3: start school, nobody has finished. One of my sisters, the
- 6:00Speaker 3: one that is next in age to me, she went
- 6:03Speaker 3: to cosmetology school, so she did finish that, and then
- 6:06Speaker 3: she even went back to becoming an instructor. Decided she
- 6:08Speaker 3: didn't want to, but she did that.
- 6:10Speaker 1: But yeah, none of them did.
- 6:11Speaker 3: I tried to convince everybody to go to Howard. I
- 6:13Speaker 3: tried to convince like my Ottle cousins to go.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Nobody wanted to go. Did your parents end up using
- 6:18Speaker 1: you as the example to your siblings? Like why can't
- 6:20Speaker 1: you be more?
- 6:21Speaker 3: All the time?
- 6:22Speaker 1: That's hilarious. I went through all that. Yeah, all the time.
- 6:28Speaker 3: I think it's something about being the oldest and I'm
- 6:31Speaker 3: a daughter, so even like I remember wanting to learn
- 6:35Speaker 3: how to cook because I didn't like what my mama
- 6:39Speaker 3: was making We had a lot of broke muals growing up,
- 6:42Speaker 3: like hamburger helper, not like horrible, like we were fed
- 6:45Speaker 3: and everything, but like, how many ways can you make
- 6:47Speaker 3: hamburger helper? Hamburger helper, there's tudor helper, there's chicken helper.
- 6:52Speaker 3: I didn't know that we had all these helpers in
- 6:53Speaker 3: the kitchen and it was still tasting like mush.
- 6:55Speaker 1: And then what else?
- 6:57Speaker 3: Did we have a lot of spaghetti? For a very
- 7:01Speaker 3: long time as an adult, I would not cook spaghetti.
- 7:04Speaker 3: I won't buy any sort of help or nothing. I
- 7:07Speaker 3: don't want to eat it. I just it's just like
- 7:09Speaker 3: it was too much in sandwiches.
- 7:12Speaker 1: You sound like. We had Country Wade on the show
- 7:14Speaker 1: and he was like, how many different recipes can go
- 7:17Speaker 1: with hot dogs? It's all a dog.
- 7:20Speaker 3: I just have a hot dog, chili dog grill it.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Yeah. He was like, no matter what your name is,
- 7:27Speaker 1: still the same thing, right, Like, Okay, so.
- 7:30Speaker 3: I'm gonna add a little bit of butter to the water.
- 7:33Speaker 1: And to the water. M okay, this is different.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Okay, I'm gonna add a little butter to the water,
- 7:38Speaker 3: and then I'm gonna add the garlic powder and the
- 7:41Speaker 3: onion powder to the water, okay in the little season.
- 7:45Speaker 1: But a lot of real chefs talk about you got
- 7:47Speaker 1: a season of water, yeah, but they usually talking just salt.
- 7:50Speaker 3: But we're gonna get the salt, like, but you add
- 7:54Speaker 3: a lot of garlic powder. Okay. You don't have an
- 7:56Speaker 3: allergy to you like?
- 7:57Speaker 1: No, okay, The only I have is uh, I can't
- 8:02Speaker 1: eve red me. I guess sick. Oh really, I'm actually
- 8:06Speaker 1: allergic and I ignored it for like fifteen years, and
- 8:09Speaker 1: I said, girl, grow up, this doesn't feel good anymore.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Just stop going. Oh, you put the seasoning packet in first.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Because I want the water to be seasoned up.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Okay, but are we going to keep some of the
- 8:23Speaker 1: water in the stir fry? Not really, not a lot.
- 8:25Speaker 3: I think some of this will boil down and it
- 8:28Speaker 3: looks kind of like a lot, I.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Guess because it's halfway. But I feel like this is.
- 8:30Speaker 3: A small pan, let's see. But I'm gonna use the
- 8:33Speaker 3: and pull it out, yeah, so it won't be soupy.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Did you end up making money off your degree.
- 8:40Speaker 3: In a way, Yes, because my degree was broadcast journalism,
- 8:44Speaker 3: and so a big part of what I had to
- 8:47Speaker 3: learn and what I was doing in there was learning
- 8:48Speaker 3: how to edit videos, and like on cocktails, I still.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Edit all of our videos. You edit all of them.
- 8:54Speaker 3: I used to set up. I bought a camera. I
- 8:56Speaker 3: used to set the camera up and it was a cannon.
- 9:00Speaker 3: So the cannon stopped at like twenty nine minutes in
- 9:02Speaker 3: some seconds, so we had to pause, hop up, switch
- 9:05Speaker 3: the stuff, well, start and restart, do the clap again,
- 9:09Speaker 3: and then keep it going. But yeah, I still edit
- 9:13Speaker 3: the episodes. I don't do the clips, have somebody else
- 9:17Speaker 3: who does the clips that we post on social media.
- 9:19Speaker 3: But the full episodes I do that. And I had
- 9:21Speaker 3: to learn how to edit audio. I had to learn
- 9:23Speaker 3: how to shoot. I had to learn about lighting and
- 9:26Speaker 3: like the conditions, what's actually really good for you? Just
- 9:29Speaker 3: because it's really right outside might not be the best
- 9:31Speaker 3: lighting for you, probably gonna look washed out. Cloudy days
- 9:34Speaker 3: are great. So I did. I never worked as an
- 9:37Speaker 3: actual journalist, and then I decided somewhere in my college
- 9:42Speaker 3: career I wanted to go the radio route because I
- 9:45Speaker 3: didn't really want I wanted to give my opinion, and
- 9:48Speaker 3: you know, journalists, you're supposed to tell the story. It's
- 9:50Speaker 3: not about you. I wanted it to be about me
- 9:52Speaker 3: a little bit, you know, and I wanted to be
- 9:55Speaker 3: able to say what I thought about the things that
- 9:57Speaker 3: were happening or.
- 9:59Speaker 1: What whether it was pop culture or whatever.
- 10:01Speaker 3: So I started working at the radio station when I
- 10:04Speaker 3: was at Howard, and then when I came here, I
- 10:07Speaker 3: did like an AM radio station for a minute, and
- 10:11Speaker 3: then I was working a bunch of different temp jobs.
- 10:14Speaker 3: I had a lot of different jobs, and then eventually
- 10:17Speaker 3: I started working at a radio station.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Here and it's at in.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Atlanta, like an actual FM station, and that.
- 10:26Speaker 1: What role did you have over there?
- 10:28Speaker 3: So when I went there, I was trying to get
- 10:31Speaker 3: in where I fit in, and so I was like
- 10:33Speaker 3: assisting with the the remote. So like when they would
- 10:37Speaker 3: be at clubs or a grand opening of like T
- 10:40Speaker 3: Mobile or something like that, I would be there assisting,
- 10:43Speaker 3: and then.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Like the on air assist like call in and you
- 10:47Speaker 1: give your yeah.
- 10:48Speaker 3: But I wasn't doing the on air part. I'm doing
- 10:50Speaker 3: like I got the box, I'm making sure the signal
- 10:52Speaker 3: is getting back to the station, I'm grabbing the personality.
- 10:55Speaker 3: But I was like whatever, because I've always felt like
- 10:57Speaker 3: I learned this in school and I've always felt this,
- 10:59Speaker 3: you need to learn to do everything. Even if you
- 11:01Speaker 3: don't end up doing everything, know how to do it
- 11:03Speaker 3: because the first time somebody can't make it or they
- 11:06Speaker 3: don't do it, are you going to.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Let that stop you? You know? Like that?
- 11:10Speaker 3: Okay, Yeah, So I was doing that and then one
- 11:14Speaker 3: oh girl I became friends with. She was an on
- 11:16Speaker 3: air personality, and I think she was really getting sick
- 11:19Speaker 3: of not getting opportunities she felt she deserved right, so
- 11:23Speaker 3: she had like taken some time off. Well when she
- 11:25Speaker 3: took the time off, I got to fill in for her.
- 11:27Speaker 3: So I was doing the afternoon drive show with somebody
- 11:31Speaker 3: else who was it at the time, Jtech.
- 11:33Speaker 1: So I was feeling in.
- 11:34Speaker 3: There, and then I got to do my own remotes,
- 11:36Speaker 3: and so then I was doing better. And then I
- 11:39Speaker 3: ended up, oddly enough in the business manager position from that,
- 11:44Speaker 3: which is not something I was qualified for, not something
- 11:47Speaker 3: I really knew exactly how to do. But it's supposed
- 11:49Speaker 3: to be temporary because literally someone got sick the person
- 11:52Speaker 3: who had that position. I got that position. It was
- 11:55Speaker 3: supposed to be only for a couple of months, and
- 11:58Speaker 3: they did not hire somebody to actually do that job
- 12:00Speaker 3: until last year. And I still do work for them,
- 12:04Speaker 3: but I don't go to the station anymore. I don't
- 12:05Speaker 3: do any of that, but I still do work for them.
- 12:08Speaker 3: But in a weird way, I'm so glad that I
- 12:11Speaker 3: did get that. I was complaining. I felt like I'm
- 12:13Speaker 3: stuck in this office. I don't care that this is
- 12:15Speaker 3: making more money. I don't care about any of that.
- 12:17Speaker 3: This isn't what I came here to do.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Yes, And.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Basically, I'm in the office and I'm seeing how the
- 12:24Speaker 3: money is made in a business that I'm trying to
- 12:28Speaker 3: start a podcast. And so the way that podcasts go
- 12:32Speaker 3: and the way that radio sells with advertising is very similar.
- 12:36Speaker 3: So I was able to onions, Yeah, to pull out
- 12:42Speaker 3: I'm gonna pull some out.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Oh can I explain what can you explain to explain
- 12:47Speaker 1: how the world of advertising in radio and podcasting is alike.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Well, a lot of these companies you're going to be buying,
- 12:55Speaker 3: they're selling, Well, you're selling advertising. You have this space
- 12:59Speaker 3: on your show show, right.
- 13:01Speaker 1: But.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Whenever you have this space on your show, sometimes you
- 13:06Speaker 3: need somebody to sell it for you.
- 13:08Speaker 1: So they're gonna pitch you.
- 13:09Speaker 3: They're gonna know that these people want to know your
- 13:11Speaker 3: numbers or they want to know the.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Reach and all of that.
- 13:14Speaker 3: And you have a salesperson on your team, and then
- 13:18Speaker 3: there's somebody that you're communicating with that doesn't actually work
- 13:21Speaker 3: for the product you're going to advertise for, but they're
- 13:23Speaker 3: working for an agency and so they're just putting these
- 13:26Speaker 3: deals together. They tell you this is the ad that
- 13:28Speaker 3: needs to run. Either you have to get one of
- 13:30Speaker 3: your hosts to read the script that we send, or
- 13:33Speaker 3: we're going to send you something already produced.
- 13:35Speaker 1: But all of that is sellable. If we got to.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Produce a commercial. If somebody has to specifically do an
- 13:41Speaker 3: endorsement and say their name in, it is different prices
- 13:44Speaker 3: for different people. So seeing how everybody doesn't have to
- 13:47Speaker 3: cost the same, so I'll learned that.
- 13:51Speaker 1: And then also making.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Sure that you stick to doing what you said you
- 13:54Speaker 3: were going to do because it might not happen every time.
- 13:57Speaker 3: But like in radio, they'll ask for an affidavit showing
- 13:59Speaker 3: the times that your ads ran. Podcasting, I mean, it's
- 14:03Speaker 3: not live, so they're going to go back and make
- 14:06Speaker 3: sure you did the ad and that you did it right.
- 14:08Speaker 3: And if something's wrong, they're gonna ask for like a
- 14:09Speaker 3: make good, which would be you got to do it
- 14:12Speaker 3: again for free to make good on the agreement. And
- 14:15Speaker 3: so then that's like a spot in your show on
- 14:17Speaker 3: another episode that you could have sold potentially, and so
- 14:20Speaker 3: now it's not there. You just have to make sure
- 14:23Speaker 3: that you stay on top of that and that you're
- 14:25Speaker 3: timely and you stick to the schedule, like both of them.
- 14:29Speaker 3: I mean, podcasts is a little bit more relaxed.
- 14:31Speaker 1: With the schedule.
- 14:31Speaker 3: You might just have like a week of it's not
- 14:34Speaker 3: necessarily a time of day, even though the listeners get
- 14:36Speaker 3: mad if it's not early enough for them, But you
- 14:40Speaker 3: do have to stick to a schedule.
- 14:42Speaker 1: And so I learned about that.
- 14:43Speaker 3: I learned about how these agencies will lie and say
- 14:45Speaker 3: that they don't have the money yet, because really the
- 14:47Speaker 3: money is funneling from a bunch of different agencies. So
- 14:50Speaker 3: then they have you wait on your check for months
- 14:51Speaker 3: and months and months. But really you got the money
- 14:53Speaker 3: in your account, you want to use it, your float
- 14:54Speaker 3: money or whatever's going on. It's just a lot of
- 14:57Speaker 3: things happen that way.
- 14:59Speaker 1: And you learn that all working at the radio. Awesome,
- 15:02Speaker 1: did you ever learn how to actually sell? No?
- 15:06Speaker 3: But I just watched other people and then whenever we
- 15:09Speaker 3: were after I felt like we were getting like a
- 15:12Speaker 3: decent consistent amount of listeners, like maybe a couple of thousand.
- 15:16Speaker 3: I was like, we can sell this because I read
- 15:18Speaker 3: that when I'm researching how I can make some money,
- 15:22Speaker 3: I read that, you know, they sell it for every thousand.
- 15:25Speaker 1: This is the accuracy. They call it the CPN right
- 15:28Speaker 1: count for a thousand. Yeah.
- 15:29Speaker 3: So I'm like, Okay, well I can make some money
- 15:33Speaker 3: somewhere along the way. If we got a thousand, even
- 15:35Speaker 3: if I'm only making twenty five dollars, that's some income
- 15:38Speaker 3: we can build up from there.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Oh girl, gokiky. Yeah. So I was like, how do
- 15:42Speaker 1: you do this?
- 15:43Speaker 3: I'm like basically like cold calling, but cold emailing all
- 15:46Speaker 3: these companies, trying to find a contact and then realizing,
- 15:50Speaker 3: you know, the smaller companies, you could get a response,
- 15:52Speaker 3: but they they're wanting like major influencers, and I didn't
- 15:57Speaker 3: really know how to tell them, Hey, I'm not a
- 15:59Speaker 3: major influencer, but we do have an audience and let's
- 16:02Speaker 3: just see.
- 16:03Speaker 1: And I think that.
- 16:05Speaker 3: The product that I endorsed that really made other small
- 16:11Speaker 3: businesses that were doing stuff they didn't have an agency
- 16:14Speaker 3: representing them. I'm probably talking to whoever runs the business,
- 16:18Speaker 3: but make them want to take a chance. Was there's
- 16:20Speaker 3: a company. It's an herbal supplement for women for your
- 16:25Speaker 3: sex drive.
- 16:26Speaker 1: And the girl was running a blog and I read
- 16:29Speaker 1: the blog. I wanted to get her on the show.
- 16:31Speaker 3: She lived in Charlotte, and I invited her on, and
- 16:34Speaker 3: I had talked about the pills.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I had ordered them, but I.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Hadn't actually tried them yet, but even just talking about them,
- 16:40Speaker 3: she said that she realized later after I had talked
- 16:44Speaker 3: about him, people went and bought some. And then when
- 16:46Speaker 3: she came on the show and we did an episode,
- 16:49Speaker 3: she said the next month she was making so much money,
- 16:51Speaker 3: and then not too much. Long after that, maybe like
- 16:54Speaker 3: a year or two, she was able to quit her
- 16:55Speaker 3: job and she worked as like did something in biology.
- 16:58Speaker 3: I don't know, but I was like, damn, I haven't
- 17:00Speaker 3: been able to quit my job.
- 17:03Speaker 1: You know. So I was like, dang, I'm happy for her.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Did you ever end up trying the pills? I'm just curious. Yeah.
- 17:07Speaker 3: I did try the pills, and I do think they
- 17:09Speaker 3: work really Yeah.
- 17:11Speaker 1: I mean they helped increase the sex drive, your sex drive,
- 17:13Speaker 1: the wetness. Yeah.
- 17:16Speaker 3: And everybody says it don't need help, I know.
- 17:20Speaker 1: But it does help.
- 17:22Speaker 3: And even I had a friend who was taking them
- 17:24Speaker 3: and she said, I don't really use it for that,
- 17:26Speaker 3: but I do like the way that they make me
- 17:28Speaker 3: feel just overall because it has other stuff that might
- 17:30Speaker 3: be in a multi vitamin or something, but it does
- 17:33Speaker 3: help with that. It's not like the little pussycat pill,
- 17:36Speaker 3: the pink pill thing that they sell at gas stations.
- 17:38Speaker 1: It's not like that.
- 17:39Speaker 3: But it did help, and she things took off for
- 17:43Speaker 3: her after she came on the show, and I'm like,
- 17:45Speaker 3: we have something because our.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Listeners are tuned in, they're listening to us.
- 17:49Speaker 3: They want to know what we think, and we're telling
- 17:51Speaker 3: them this and this is just one product, like this
- 17:53Speaker 3: could be you. So I'm telling them that she gave
- 17:56Speaker 3: me a little testimonial and she sponsored several of our
- 18:01Speaker 3: live shows, not like the whole thing. But I was like, Okay, well,
- 18:04Speaker 3: how can I put these sponsorship packages together? What are
- 18:07Speaker 3: we actually selling? I found a website online I think
- 18:11Speaker 3: it might still be there, advertised cast and it's like
- 18:16Speaker 3: a marketplace for advertisers and they can see the shows,
- 18:19Speaker 3: they see the numbers. It's all verified and people can
- 18:23Speaker 3: you can make money that way because people will buy
- 18:25Speaker 3: the spots. You log into your portal and you see
- 18:27Speaker 3: you're not really talking to a rep like that.
- 18:30Speaker 1: But that was one of the things that we did.
- 18:31Speaker 3: So I'm cold calling.
- 18:32Speaker 1: I learn that.
- 18:33Speaker 3: I learned how to do that from the salespeople at
- 18:35Speaker 3: the radio. Then just I'm constantly searching for stuff I
- 18:39Speaker 3: knew I had an idea, and I'm looking at these
- 18:41Speaker 3: other shows and listening to other shows, and it's like
- 18:43Speaker 3: people are really making money, like they're doing this for
- 18:46Speaker 3: a living and it's low overhead. I gotta figure this
- 18:51Speaker 3: thing out, Yeah, Because I'm always trying to figure out
- 18:53Speaker 3: how do people make money? I just I just always
- 18:56Speaker 3: want to know.
- 18:57Speaker 1: So what were some of the early on mistakes you
- 19:00Speaker 1: like you made when you first started that Later you
- 19:03Speaker 1: look back and you're like, I could have dodged a
- 19:05Speaker 1: bullet easily. There were so many.
- 19:09Speaker 3: The first one listening to somebody else and allowing them
- 19:12Speaker 3: to tell me what their idea was and it was
- 19:16Speaker 3: different than mine, and go on with that instead of
- 19:18Speaker 3: standing my ground and saying, well, this is my idea
- 19:21Speaker 3: and I want to do it this way. And when
- 19:23Speaker 3: I started the show, I had.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Different co hosts.
- 19:25Speaker 3: There were three other people, two guys and a girl,
- 19:28Speaker 3: And we had a woman who was working as a
- 19:31Speaker 3: producer and her idea and I'd work with her and
- 19:35Speaker 3: other with other stuff. But her idea was that it
- 19:37Speaker 3: should be more balanced conversations. And I'm like, all these
- 19:39Speaker 3: people are lying on the show.
- 19:41Speaker 1: This isn't what the show is about. We don't need.
- 19:43Speaker 3: Another roundtable of people telling everybody how to date, how
- 19:48Speaker 3: to have successful relationships.
- 19:50Speaker 1: That's not what this is.
- 19:50Speaker 3: This is supposed to be people telling their own experiences.
- 19:54Speaker 3: And we were all different, Like I was the youngest
- 19:57Speaker 3: and single, never been married, no children, still the same
- 20:01Speaker 3: and that was almost.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Ten years ago.
- 20:03Speaker 3: And then the other chick on the show, she was married,
- 20:06Speaker 3: she was divorced and had a young child. Like in
- 20:08Speaker 3: kindergartener first grade, there was a guy who was single
- 20:12Speaker 3: and in a relationship, and somebody else was happily married.
- 20:15Speaker 3: So it's like we have these different opinions, but nobody
- 20:17Speaker 3: really wanted to tell anything about their lives. They wanted
- 20:21Speaker 3: to speak in a ton of generalizations.
- 20:23Speaker 1: And then I hate that. I hate that.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like people don't you're just regurgitating things that
- 20:30Speaker 3: other people have already said, what actually happened to you?
- 20:32Speaker 1: What do you actually think?
- 20:34Speaker 3: And that doesn't mean that anybody has to live their
- 20:36Speaker 3: life that way, but like, come on, I was bored,
- 20:51Speaker 3: so I'm gonna.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Put this brain child. You're pulling it together, but you're
- 20:57Speaker 1: still allowing other opinions to kind of overs because then I'm.
- 21:01Speaker 3: Second guessing myself, like, well, maybe they're right, Maybe nobody wants.
- 21:04Speaker 1: To listen to this.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Maybe it'll sound a little whiny. I don't know, maybe
- 21:07Speaker 3: it'll just sound like we're all complaining. I don't have
- 21:10Speaker 3: good experiences right now. So I let that happen, and
- 21:14Speaker 3: then slowly but surely, all those people were gone. So
- 21:17Speaker 3: the guy who was happily married, he he wouldn't telling
- 21:20Speaker 3: his wife where he was going every week whenever we
- 21:23Speaker 3: were recording, and nothing bad was going on, but he
- 21:26Speaker 3: wasn't telling her, and so she was pissed and he
- 21:29Speaker 3: got in trouble and he couldn't come back anymore.
- 21:32Speaker 1: That's probably why he wasn't telling to begin with.
- 21:37Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think he had other things going on,
- 21:39Speaker 3: and she just felt like this is not a priority,
- 21:41Speaker 3: and this isn't making you money right now?
- 21:43Speaker 1: So what are you doing?
- 21:45Speaker 3: You need to be home with us. And then the
- 21:48Speaker 3: other guy who was on the show, he was just
- 21:50Speaker 3: lying every week about experience, well not lying, he was
- 21:54Speaker 3: telling the truth on the show. Then he would forget, Oh,
- 21:57Speaker 3: this is gonna go out. I don't want my girl
- 22:00Speaker 3: to hear these because I told her x y Z
- 22:02Speaker 3: and the stories aren't gonna add up.
- 22:03Speaker 1: So can you edit that out?
- 22:04Speaker 3: No, we did the whole episode around what you said.
- 22:08Speaker 3: And then they were trying to get like a lot
- 22:10Speaker 3: of celebrities, and you know, I'm sure those people it's
- 22:15Speaker 3: no shade to them, but it's like they did something
- 22:17Speaker 3: in their time when they were at their prime. But
- 22:19Speaker 3: this isn't their prime, so there's no draw there. And
- 22:22Speaker 3: they're they're speaking in generalizations too.
- 22:24Speaker 1: We don't.
- 22:25Speaker 3: There's nothing, there's no reason for this. And then so
- 22:30Speaker 3: the two guys are gone, so then it's just me
- 22:33Speaker 3: and the girl. And so then my current co host, Medina.
- 22:37Speaker 3: We've known each other since freshman year of high school.
- 22:40Speaker 1: So as a great co host, you got a freshman, ok,
- 22:43Speaker 1: we have we've.
- 22:44Speaker 3: Known each other for so we can talk about anything. Yeah,
- 22:48Speaker 3: And so like we were best friends and she was
- 22:53Speaker 3: in Dallas at the time. Yeah, she was in Dallas
- 22:58Speaker 3: at the time. It's like end of twenty sixteen, and
- 23:00Speaker 3: she was saying that she was ready to move back
- 23:03Speaker 3: to Atlanta, and she had lived here, she went to
- 23:04Speaker 3: school here, but she had left some time ago. Because honestly,
- 23:07Speaker 3: if she would have been here when I started the show,
- 23:09Speaker 3: I probably would have just started with her, of course,
- 23:12Speaker 3: but she wasn't here. So she was doing another podcast
- 23:16Speaker 3: in Dallas. That one that experience wasn't working out for her,
- 23:20Speaker 3: and she was tired of being in Dallas. She wanted
- 23:21Speaker 3: to be back in Atlanta, and she was talking about moving.
- 23:23Speaker 3: I said, well, she had been a guest on the show.
- 23:26Speaker 3: I said, would you want to come on and be
- 23:28Speaker 3: my co host? I don't think that my current co
- 23:30Speaker 3: host is going to work out, but I would like
- 23:32Speaker 3: to bring you on. We'll try it with the three
- 23:33Speaker 3: of us and see how that goes. And if things
- 23:35Speaker 3: don't work out either way, you don't have to stick
- 23:38Speaker 3: it out. But I mean, here we are. That was
- 23:40Speaker 3: twenty sixteen into twenty sixteen. She was like, yeah, when
- 23:43Speaker 3: I moved there, So in twenty seventeen she started officially
- 23:46Speaker 3: being on the show, and then somewhere along the lines
- 23:49Speaker 3: my original co host, she decided she didn't want to
- 23:52Speaker 3: do it anymore. She didn't want to be vulnerable, And
- 23:55Speaker 3: I remember feeling I don't even know what the word
- 23:58Speaker 3: is for my feeling, but we were.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Having a conversation.
- 24:00Speaker 3: I was like, why don't you share the content like
- 24:03Speaker 3: on your Facebook, Like you're more active on Facebook than Instagram.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Why don't you post anything about the show or share
- 24:08Speaker 3: any links or like promoted? How are people gonna find it? Like, girl,
- 24:12Speaker 3: and neither one of us famous. Yeah, all we can
- 24:14Speaker 3: do is like I'm literally calling my friends, like will
- 24:16Speaker 3: you please listen to the podcast and then give me
- 24:18Speaker 3: honest feedback, Like I'm trying to make this happen. And
- 24:21Speaker 3: she was like, well, if it was bigger, I wouldn't
- 24:24Speaker 3: have a problem doing it, Like if we were at
- 24:26Speaker 3: the level of like lip service, I would be cool
- 24:29Speaker 3: with it. But like I come from a political family
- 24:33Speaker 3: and blah blah blah blah blah.
- 24:35Speaker 1: And I was just you should have thought about that
- 24:36Speaker 1: all a long time ago. And how am I right?
- 24:38Speaker 2: Girl?
- 24:40Speaker 1: Right? Or did you just calmly say okay, I get
- 24:42Speaker 1: it in life?
- 24:42Speaker 3: I was just like, so, how are we ever gonna
- 24:44Speaker 3: get there. It's just supposed to be me posting all
- 24:47Speaker 3: day and then you read benefits like what and so
- 24:50Speaker 3: she was like, I'm just saying like just certain things,
- 24:53Speaker 3: and even like the name.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Of the show.
- 24:54Speaker 3: I'm like, girl, you help me come up with the
- 24:56Speaker 3: name of the show. And why is contail so alarming
- 24:58Speaker 3: to you? We don't have like a big penis on anything.
- 25:03Speaker 3: And it's like she kept saying, well, it's the cock
- 25:05Speaker 3: park and I'm like, if it was just cocktail spelled
- 25:08Speaker 3: normal like a cocktail, it is the same. The CCK
- 25:11Speaker 3: is still there. What are you're talking about?
- 25:12Speaker 1: And you have a kid?
- 25:13Speaker 3: We know you have been on one before. So that
- 25:16Speaker 3: was just like I was like, you know what, this
- 25:19Speaker 3: is just really not gonna work out. This is not
- 25:20Speaker 3: gonna work out.
- 25:21Speaker 1: What am I going to do? Did you really see
- 25:23Speaker 1: the kid line?
- 25:24Speaker 3: Yes, because I'm like, girl, like come on, and like
- 25:29Speaker 3: this this act that you put on, I wouldn't bust
- 25:32Speaker 3: you out on the show, but it's like, I know
- 25:34Speaker 3: that this character you're portraying is not who you are.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Who are you hiding from and what's going on? And hey,
- 25:41Speaker 3: it's fine because I don't mind being the wilder person. Yeah,
- 25:49Speaker 3: and it's like, okay, you want to downplay some things whatever,
- 25:53Speaker 3: we just want to be entertained.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Okay, I'm gonna add the chicken out.
- 25:55Speaker 3: It was a little bit frozen.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Okay, so but I think this has some heat now,
- 26:02Speaker 1: so you'll put down that looks good. It looks like
- 26:06Speaker 1: real legit stir fry and it's a couple bucks meals.
- 26:09Speaker 3: Yeah, super easy because this chicken is cooked already and
- 26:12Speaker 3: that makes it easier. Especially like when I was in
- 26:14Speaker 3: college that did not have a lot of pots and pants.
- 26:16Speaker 3: I think I had the same set.
- 26:18Speaker 1: But like not all these pieces. You got a lot
- 26:19Speaker 1: of pieces I had, like you know, the three piece
- 26:22Speaker 1: fry pants set. That's what I got. Has wit with
- 26:30Speaker 1: hand for us. We love them. Yeah.
- 26:33Speaker 3: But yeah, so I forgot the question even But I
- 26:36Speaker 3: just remember starting the show and that was really rough
- 26:38Speaker 3: and getting to a point where Okay, I feel like
- 26:40Speaker 3: I found my groove and now we can work from here.
- 26:43Speaker 3: And now let's I always said, let's focus on making
- 26:46Speaker 3: sure we have a good show because no matter what,
- 26:50Speaker 3: like we could get a sponsor, but if nobody's listening
- 26:52Speaker 3: because the show's not good, they're not gonna see anything,
- 26:55Speaker 3: We're gonna lose listeners.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Whatever.
- 26:57Speaker 3: We gotta concentrate and make sure we have a good product.
- 27:00Speaker 3: I don't want the show to be based on guests,
- 27:03Speaker 3: because I'm not doing the show alone. It's two of us.
- 27:06Speaker 3: We have guests, but it's like if a guest cancels
- 27:10Speaker 3: or like, I'm always thinking not to be negative, but
- 27:12Speaker 3: I just think about the what ifs of what could
- 27:13Speaker 3: happen in a day, and it's like, Okay, we book
- 27:15Speaker 3: our studio time because now we have left my living
- 27:18Speaker 3: room and we're in a studio, so we got to
- 27:20Speaker 3: pay for this by the hour. I'm lugging all my
- 27:23Speaker 3: equipment in there on days when I feel like doing
- 27:25Speaker 3: the video because we weren't doing video at.
- 27:26Speaker 1: First, you were. We start out all audio.
- 27:29Speaker 3: All audio, and even now the majority of our audience
- 27:32Speaker 3: is still audio.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Okay, but I enjoy the good though it's less pressure.
- 27:37Speaker 1: It is less pressure, And I like that she thought
- 27:39Speaker 1: about the guest thing, because I know, even with our
- 27:41Speaker 1: show that guest hurdle can be a real hurdle. We
- 27:45Speaker 1: have to pretape so many just in case.
- 27:49Speaker 3: Yeah, and we've had we had times where like I'm
- 27:53Speaker 3: gonna have some more better. I feel like that lady
- 27:55Speaker 3: that got canceled who was always adding better on the
- 27:58Speaker 3: Food Network. I won't even say her name.
- 27:59Speaker 1: You know she got canceled for always adding butter, not.
- 28:02Speaker 3: For always atting butter. She was doing some races. Some
- 28:04Speaker 3: racist comments were made. But that's why I feel like,
- 28:07Speaker 3: because she was always adding butter. And I don't want
- 28:09Speaker 3: my arms to do that thing in the back later?
- 28:11Speaker 1: Is that where we need? But let me tell you something.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Butter is a steap on my house. I love faces
- 28:16Speaker 1: of it, but like the boxes. I buy boxes of
- 28:20Speaker 1: it in both because I use that much butter. I
- 28:23Speaker 1: can go through a stick of butter once every two days.
- 28:26Speaker 3: Maybe not every two days, but in a week, I've
- 28:30Speaker 3: been butter.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:31Speaker 3: I love butter.
- 28:32Speaker 1: But my daughter she's too. She will eat it like
- 28:34Speaker 1: it's a candy bar. Really, it's disgusting. She literally come
- 28:38Speaker 1: in the kids and she'd be like, mommy, butter, and
- 28:40Speaker 1: then she'll go and you'll see the little finger reach
- 28:42Speaker 1: up and she'll see it. I'll leave it on the
- 28:44Speaker 1: end and you'll see a little finger like carvings in
- 28:47Speaker 1: the butter, and then she'd be so happy.
- 28:49Speaker 3: I'll be like, that's funny because what.
- 28:53Speaker 1: She'll literally be like mouthful of butter eating it, Like
- 28:56Speaker 1: I did try it by itself.
- 28:57Speaker 3: One disgusting it is, and it's so crazy how like
- 29:01Speaker 3: something that can add flavor to something else alone is
- 29:04Speaker 3: absolutely terrible.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Yeah, it needs some help. But you know, before this show,
- 29:09Speaker 1: I used to eat like, I guess, fake butter. But
- 29:13Speaker 1: then it wasn't. No, it was like you know, the
- 29:16Speaker 1: like butter that comes in a bucket and it's all smooth.
- 29:18Speaker 1: You're like, oh, that's real butter. It wasn't until the
- 29:21Speaker 1: CEO while I'm Out was on our show and he
- 29:24Speaker 1: like was like, don't put that fake shit, get real butter.
- 29:28Speaker 1: And I was like and then I like was like, okay,
- 29:32Speaker 1: what's real butter? And then I was like, yo, I've
- 29:35Speaker 1: never cooked with real butter. Oh really? And then I
- 29:37Speaker 1: tried it and it was absolutely amazing, and I never
- 29:40Speaker 1: went back to the fake stuff.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Yeah. I used to use the fake stuff because I
- 29:44Speaker 3: had to, but I couldn't wait.
- 29:47Speaker 1: To like actually buy real butter. Yeah, because it makes
- 29:51Speaker 1: it salted too.
- 29:52Speaker 3: I don't always buy salted only because I have more
- 29:56Speaker 3: control of how much salt I add and.
- 29:58Speaker 1: If you have the stuff.
- 30:00Speaker 3: And then if I'm baking, a lot of recipes call
- 30:03Speaker 3: for unsalted better.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Oh that's all. I never baked though. Yeah, if my
- 30:09Speaker 1: little brother put me onto the like the cookie toe
- 30:12Speaker 1: house where it's like little squares. Oh mm hm. He
- 30:14Speaker 1: put me onto that, and I was like, wait what Yeah,
- 30:18Speaker 1: you have real nice cookies in ten minutes flat. Mm hmm. Yeah.
- 30:22Speaker 1: I was never again. Never did I bake ever again
- 30:24Speaker 1: after that. Yeah, I wasn't a big baker.
- 30:27Speaker 3: But there's like a few desserts, like like I love
- 30:30Speaker 3: sweet potato pie, Like Thanksgiving is my time. I love
- 30:33Speaker 3: making sweet potato pie over and over again.
- 30:37Speaker 1: I like, do you make the crust? No, I'm by
- 30:40Speaker 1: the crust. That's too much work. But okay, okay, but
- 30:43Speaker 1: I just I just want I was trying to test how.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Thorough you were, oh the crust, But I don't because
- 30:50Speaker 3: I also still don't have an actual pie dish.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Oh so I would.
- 30:56Speaker 3: Need something to put it in.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, but I'm like, you know, whenever cocktails or
- 31:01Speaker 1: whatever whatever else I do makes me enough money to
- 31:05Speaker 1: buy my house with my big kitchen, because I.
- 31:07Speaker 3: Do really love to cook.
- 31:10Speaker 1: I want all the stuff Okay, I would love to
- 31:12Speaker 1: be like somebody who's always cooking yet and stuff.
- 31:17Speaker 3: I love when I have house guests.
- 31:19Speaker 1: I love the holidays because I really like to cook. Okay, yeah, okay,
- 31:25Speaker 1: Well your stir fry looks great. So when do you
- 31:29Speaker 1: start to take on the next challenge in podcasting, which
- 31:33Speaker 1: I think is the ultimate challenge versus live shows.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Live shows. So I was really nervous to do our
- 31:40Speaker 3: first one. We did our first one in May of
- 31:43Speaker 3: twenty nineteen. I wasn't sure if we had enough listeners.
- 31:48Speaker 3: Like first, I was like, well, I want the listeners
- 31:50Speaker 3: to start reaching out to saying it right, and I
- 31:53Speaker 3: need them to do it kind of often so that
- 31:55Speaker 3: I can feel like people are actually gonna buy the tickets,
- 31:58Speaker 3: because still it's like a bit of imposter syndrome, I
- 32:01Speaker 3: guess where it's like people really want to come and
- 32:04Speaker 3: pay their hard earned money to sit in a room
- 32:07Speaker 3: with no drinks, including this ticket price, to listen to
- 32:10Speaker 3: me talk about my horrible or my embarrassing experiences with
- 32:15Speaker 3: these men. Y'all are that entertained? Even though I'm probably
- 32:19Speaker 3: gonna repeat a story I said on the show, and
- 32:21Speaker 3: when I tell you they came out, they came out,
- 32:23Speaker 3: we did our first show. I was watching our numbers.
- 32:26Speaker 3: I'm always looking at the numbers, the analytics of like who's.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Actually listening to our show? And at this time we had.
- 32:30Speaker 3: A few episodes that were video, but we were still
- 32:33Speaker 3: heavily audio based. So I'm looking at the numbers, and.
- 32:38Speaker 1: We're getting to a better spot. We're getting a few ads.
- 32:41Speaker 3: Here and there, We're making a little money. Then I
- 32:44Speaker 3: started meeting people just out and about and they'd be like, hey,
- 32:47Speaker 3: do you do cocktails.
- 32:49Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, so you like the show.
- 32:50Speaker 3: You and to follow me on Instagram and see what
- 32:51Speaker 3: I look like, because you don't even know what I
- 32:53Speaker 3: look like from listening to the show. And so when
- 32:56Speaker 3: people were reaching out that were total strangers, not the
- 32:59Speaker 3: friends I had been begging to listen to the show,
- 33:02Speaker 3: I was like, Okay, we got something, and it was
- 33:04Speaker 3: happening with both of us, and so I was like, Okay, well,
- 33:08Speaker 3: let's let's look at venues and see how much this
- 33:10Speaker 3: is really gonna cost, because we're gonna have to front
- 33:12Speaker 3: the money. We didn't have a big network behind us
- 33:16Speaker 3: then and even today we don't. We have an ad
- 33:19Speaker 3: network that does sell advertising for us, but we didn't
- 33:22Speaker 3: have any help. And did you ever end up selling
- 33:27Speaker 3: your own?
- 33:27Speaker 1: Oh? I guess you did the sponsorship of the till right, Yeah.
- 33:31Speaker 3: The sponsorship with a pill like she bought some ads
- 33:33Speaker 3: and she sponsored some live shows. But then too, just
- 33:37Speaker 3: reaching out to different companies. We did like a small
- 33:40Speaker 3: vodka company and a couple of other small businesses, a
- 33:46Speaker 3: lot of them services.
- 33:46Speaker 1: A lot of them were local, but some.
- 33:48Speaker 3: Weren't even in Atlanta, And it's like, we have listeners
- 33:50Speaker 3: other places and we can see where they are.
- 33:52Speaker 1: So we did sell on our own.
- 33:54Speaker 3: But it was so much easier when I could focus
- 33:56Speaker 3: on the show and then like that whole advertised cash.
- 33:59Speaker 3: Once I found out about that and got us hooked
- 34:00Speaker 3: up on there, that was great. It made the world
- 34:04Speaker 3: of difference because then you just get the email that hey,
- 34:07Speaker 3: somebody has placed an order on your show, and that
- 34:10Speaker 3: felt good.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Okay, So going back to the live shows. Okay, So
- 34:16Speaker 1: take me to through that whole process for you. So
- 34:19Speaker 1: we're going to all these different venues. I'm at work
- 34:22Speaker 1: at the radio station at the time. What was my
- 34:25Speaker 1: co host doing?
- 34:26Speaker 3: She was working at this real estate company. I think
- 34:30Speaker 3: she was like an office manager or something there. I
- 34:31Speaker 3: don't know, but we're like trying to coordinate in our schedules.
- 34:36Speaker 3: At one point she was, what's she a flight no,
- 34:38Speaker 3: the flight attendant one step.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:40Speaker 3: So we're coordinating our schedules, trying to go to all
- 34:42Speaker 3: these different places, trying to find somebody first that we
- 34:44Speaker 3: can reach out to to buy the venues. Some of
- 34:46Speaker 3: these venues are really expensive. So we found this place
- 34:50Speaker 3: downtown Atlanta, and she told us how much it would be,
- 34:56Speaker 3: and I was like, okay, I'm thinking, we how is
- 35:00Speaker 3: a deposit? When do we have to pay the balance?
- 35:02Speaker 3: If we can put, we should put. We need to
- 35:04Speaker 3: give everybody ninety days to get their tickets and like
- 35:07Speaker 3: to promote the thing. So we put the tickets on
- 35:09Speaker 3: sale in February and then I was like, we do
- 35:12Speaker 3: it with event, right, they'll pay us out. I think
- 35:14Speaker 3: it's like every week or every other week something like that.
- 35:16Speaker 3: Then we'll just take that money that we're getting from
- 35:19Speaker 3: ticket sales and put it up. I think I don't
- 35:22Speaker 3: remember if we split it or if I just paid
- 35:24Speaker 3: what the deposit was, but we had something for the deposit,
- 35:27Speaker 3: and then we just use that ticket sales like sweating bullets,
- 35:30Speaker 3: like fuck yeah, until I put the tickets on sale
- 35:33Speaker 3: because it sold out in two weeks, and I was
- 35:35Speaker 3: just like, oh my god, I sold the tickets for
- 35:37Speaker 3: too like they were too cheat your tickets. They started
- 35:42Speaker 3: at twenty five dollars. You never see a twenty five
- 35:45Speaker 3: dollars ticket again unless we're at a comedy club, because
- 35:47Speaker 3: they make us do that, and I'd be mad, but
- 35:49Speaker 3: you know.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Why, because they want the drink money. Yeah, they don't
- 35:53Speaker 1: at the comedy clubs. They don't do a different split
- 35:55Speaker 1: or is it just what.
- 35:56Speaker 3: So at the comedy clubs they will sell the tickets
- 36:00Speaker 3: at a certain price. But what I've learned is you're
- 36:03Speaker 3: gonna get different deals depending on if somebody. If you're
- 36:07Speaker 3: working with somebody else versus representing yourself, makes a big difference.
- 36:10Speaker 3: Because we got a booking agent. Later in twenty twenty
- 36:13Speaker 3: we got a booking agent. We didn't do another show
- 36:15Speaker 3: until twenty twenty two, but that made a difference. And
- 36:19Speaker 3: so we have somebody representing us. It just makes it
- 36:21Speaker 3: look better. And then once we were able to sell
- 36:23Speaker 3: out a show at this comedy club, then the next
- 36:26Speaker 3: go around they're offering us way more money, so it's
- 36:29Speaker 3: like they're not getting money, yeah, because we're not selling
- 36:33Speaker 3: the tickets.
- 36:33Speaker 1: They sell the tickets.
- 36:34Speaker 3: So the first four shows that we did in twenty nineteen,
- 36:39Speaker 3: we sold the tickets ourselves on event right. We were
- 36:42Speaker 3: gonna tour in twenty twenty, but the world shut down.
- 36:45Speaker 3: Somebody reached out to us in twenty twenty about working
- 36:47Speaker 3: together and he said he could represent us, and he
- 36:50Speaker 3: had done like all these different rock bands, but he
- 36:52Speaker 3: was trying to do podcasts.
- 36:53Speaker 1: Blah blah blah.
- 36:54Speaker 3: So he sets up what was the first show we did?
- 36:57Speaker 1: Was it here? Wait? This is wait before before you
- 37:00Speaker 1: get to him, explain some of the hurdles of the
- 37:03Speaker 1: mindset and everything going on at the time doing your
- 37:05Speaker 1: first show.
- 37:08Speaker 3: People bought tickets, but they were cheap, so will they come?
- 37:11Speaker 3: Are there going to be empty seats? Then it was like, okay,
- 37:15Speaker 3: the actual show itself, Like, I'm worried about all this
- 37:17Speaker 3: other show, but we have to come up with something
- 37:19Speaker 3: to make it entertaining so that people have like a memorable.
- 37:22Speaker 1: Experience with us.
- 37:24Speaker 3: We don't want them to feel like they wasted their money,
- 37:26Speaker 3: even if the ticket was five dollars, Like you I
- 37:29Speaker 3: want you to come and have a great time. So
- 37:32Speaker 3: figuring that out, trying to figure out the order of things,
- 37:37Speaker 3: whether to incorporate people or not. Then it's like little
- 37:41Speaker 3: stuff at the venue, extra security. I think we need
- 37:45Speaker 3: that security, Yes we do, because these girls get drunk
- 37:47Speaker 3: and wild, you know, extra security did. And then I
- 37:52Speaker 3: learned after the first show, we're.
- 37:54Speaker 1: Like, okay, more security. And then how long was it
- 37:59Speaker 1: your first How do you try to do at least
- 38:01Speaker 1: two hours or no?
- 38:03Speaker 3: I felt like people get bored by then. So we
- 38:05Speaker 3: had another podcast open up for us. We gave them
- 38:07Speaker 3: fifteen minutes. Then we had a fifteen minutes and so
- 38:12Speaker 3: they came out like right at showtime, storry right. So
- 38:17Speaker 3: we gave them fifteen minutes, and then we had a
- 38:20Speaker 3: host who was a comedian, a friend of ours.
- 38:22Speaker 1: He did like another tenige minutes.
- 38:26Speaker 3: He came out, introduced them, then he came back out,
- 38:28Speaker 3: did a little set, played some games to get the
- 38:30Speaker 3: people hype, and then we came out. I think we
- 38:33Speaker 3: were out there for like an hour and a.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Half, and so the whole show was like two hours,
- 38:38Speaker 1: but us.
- 38:38Speaker 3: Being on stage was not. And I felt like we
- 38:40Speaker 3: could have cut it down they had a blast, but
- 38:42Speaker 3: I was like, Okay, you just never want to have
- 38:44Speaker 3: that moment where you're dragging some hurdles. Don't take too
- 38:52Speaker 3: many good luck show shots ahead of the show because
- 38:57Speaker 3: you might get a little too loose lips, and it
- 38:59Speaker 3: is there is no editing that people are right in
- 39:01Speaker 3: front of your face.
- 39:02Speaker 1: I feel like for your show, it's better though that way, right,
- 39:05Speaker 1: the looselip no okay?
- 39:07Speaker 3: For me, I get slurry, So then it's like it's
- 39:11Speaker 3: not funny because you don't know what I'm saying. I
- 39:13Speaker 3: just look like a drunk mess. Now my co host
- 39:15Speaker 3: I don't be knowing she's drunk sometimes until she says
- 39:17Speaker 3: something I know she wouldn't have said, and I'm like,
- 39:19Speaker 3: I wish I could do that, But this mouth gets
- 39:21Speaker 3: real relaxed. Yeah, I'll say anything. Okay, it can work
- 39:24Speaker 3: out good and other times not so much so. Learning
- 39:29Speaker 3: that what other hurdles just crowd control, and I think
- 39:35Speaker 3: we're pretty good at that overall. But the first show,
- 39:38Speaker 3: even like I cried a little bit before we went
- 39:41Speaker 3: out because I was like, this is just an idea
- 39:44Speaker 3: in my head listening to the read, and now people
- 39:48Speaker 3: are actually paying to.
- 39:51Speaker 1: Come see me, and it's years later, yes, how many years?
- 39:55Speaker 1: So this is?
- 39:55Speaker 3: This is so the show had been out for three
- 39:57Speaker 3: years at that point. This is twenty nineteen. So I'm like, Okay,
- 40:02Speaker 3: people are coming out and they're gonna spend money, and
- 40:04Speaker 3: they're excited to see us, like they are like jumping
- 40:07Speaker 3: up and down happy, they want to take pictures.
- 40:11Speaker 1: I just cried a little.
- 40:12Speaker 3: Bit on the side of the stage and I have
- 40:13Speaker 3: fixed my makeup and come back. But and then I
- 40:15Speaker 3: just thought about it. It was like all the naysayers, everybody's saying,
- 40:21Speaker 3: you need to focus on a real job, you need
- 40:23Speaker 3: to be applying.
- 40:23Speaker 1: For jobs and their little podcast at this time, are
- 40:26Speaker 1: you working any side jobs?
- 40:28Speaker 3: No side jobs, it's just the podcast and the radio station.
- 40:32Speaker 1: That's it. Okay, And yeah, you're dealing with a lot
- 40:35Speaker 1: mm hmm. And so I just okay, at this point,
- 40:41Speaker 1: is your co host also in one hundred percent or she.
- 40:46Speaker 3: She's in one hundred percent and she was enjoying it.
- 40:49Speaker 3: Now the difference was with us.
- 40:52Speaker 1: Is like.
- 40:56Speaker 3: What would I say would be a big difference. Sometimes
- 40:58Speaker 3: I think that she didn't really how much work I
- 41:02Speaker 3: was doing because I wasn't asking for help and I
- 41:06Speaker 3: enjoy it. I can be a bit of a workaholic,
- 41:08Speaker 3: but at times it felt like, Okay, just because I
- 41:12Speaker 3: don't need your help with these things doesn't mean that
- 41:16Speaker 3: I don't want some help in places where I'm not
- 41:18Speaker 3: so great at, you know. Yeah, so that was a
- 41:20Speaker 3: bit of a struggle. But as far as like feeling
- 41:24Speaker 3: all in and really wanting this to be a thing,
- 41:26Speaker 3: she was definitely all in. She always has been, and
- 41:31Speaker 3: so that was something. It's like we were friends first
- 41:34Speaker 3: and then being all in about the show, and then
- 41:36Speaker 3: just like talking to each other and again both of
- 41:40Speaker 3: us not listening to what other people say about who's
- 41:43Speaker 3: doing what and all of that, because everybody can feel
- 41:46Speaker 3: how they want to feel, but this.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Is our work situation.
- 41:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I know what I'm good at, I know what
- 41:50Speaker 3: she's good at, and a lot of the things are
- 41:51Speaker 3: not the same, which to me is ideal because then
- 41:54Speaker 3: we can, you know, cover so much ground. And then
- 41:57Speaker 3: just getting comfortable with that. Once we got into that groove,
- 42:01Speaker 3: it was just like, Okay, things are really going on.
- 42:15Speaker 1: All right. So after you do your first successful show,
- 42:19Speaker 1: m hmm, okay, then you get you come across the booker.
- 42:22Speaker 3: Yeah, so then come across the booker, and so then
- 42:25Speaker 3: I see like, not only were we selling our tickets
- 42:27Speaker 3: kind of low, it's a lot easier with him representing us.
- 42:32Speaker 3: And he was only taking uh still, he only takes
- 42:35Speaker 3: ten percent. And I was like, okay, good, because I
- 42:38Speaker 3: was also afraid he's ten of the grocer, the ten
- 42:42Speaker 3: percent of the gross if it's if we get a guarantee,
- 42:49Speaker 3: ten percent of the net. If it's no guarantee. Okay,
- 42:53Speaker 3: So what does that mean? So like a ven you
- 42:56Speaker 3: might say, we're going to give you fifteen thousand dollars
- 42:58Speaker 3: to do this show, so we're not worried about to
- 43:00Speaker 3: sales or nothing, because no matter what, we getting fifteen
- 43:01Speaker 3: thousand dollars, Like, we still want it to be a
- 43:03Speaker 3: packed house, but we're getting fifteen thousand dollars to do
- 43:05Speaker 3: this venue, we don't have to worry about it. Another
- 43:08Speaker 3: venue might say, well, you've never done this market before,
- 43:12Speaker 3: we don't know. We'll sell your tickets at these prices,
- 43:16Speaker 3: these different levels, and then you will get seventy percent
- 43:20Speaker 3: or you get seventy five percent after all of these expenses.
- 43:23Speaker 3: So it just depends. But the guaranteed deals, I mean,
- 43:26Speaker 3: sometimes you get more. Sometimes you don't. It just depends
- 43:30Speaker 3: on what your rep is able to work out for you.
- 43:33Speaker 3: But then even like because I have friends who are
- 43:36Speaker 3: in this industry and we'll talk, you find out other
- 43:40Speaker 3: people are getting way different offers and it just comes
- 43:44Speaker 3: with your numbers. They do matter, And have you done
- 43:47Speaker 3: this venue? Who's representing you? Are they fighting for you?
- 43:52Speaker 3: Things like that, because even in some venues, like we
- 43:55Speaker 3: had to talk to our agent, like you need to
- 43:56Speaker 3: talk to the venues to make sure that they are
- 44:00Speaker 3: upholding their end of the bargain. If they say there's
- 44:02Speaker 3: going to be security and stuff, we don't think anybody's
- 44:04Speaker 3: gonna come in and shoot the place up. But the
- 44:06Speaker 3: girls get a little over zealous sometimes and they want
- 44:09Speaker 3: to come hang out backstage because I don't know what happens.
- 44:12Speaker 3: I don't know if it's alcohol or just feeling like
- 44:15Speaker 3: we're all best friends because you've been listening to us,
- 44:17Speaker 3: but we actually haven't met you. You've only met us,
- 44:21Speaker 3: and they're trying to come backstage or just moving around
- 44:24Speaker 3: backstage where all of our personal belongings are. And sometimes
- 44:26Speaker 3: it's like, okay, after being on for so many people,
- 44:29Speaker 3: we need a second to decompress. We do meet and
- 44:31Speaker 3: greets and stuff, and they just kind of let anybody
- 44:33Speaker 3: who says, oh, we're going back to see kikim Adina,
- 44:36Speaker 3: They'll just let them go. And we don't have like
- 44:39Speaker 3: a big team. So then what's like, the scariest experience
- 44:42Speaker 3: you had. Scariest experience was here in Atlanta. There was
- 44:45Speaker 3: a guy who have been dming me on Instagram. He
- 44:51Speaker 3: was deming the cocktails page, he was sending emails, he
- 44:54Speaker 3: had contacted the venue, he bought a ticket to come
- 44:56Speaker 3: to the live show. But then he was just getting
- 44:58Speaker 3: carried away with all of the messages and the stuff
- 45:01Speaker 3: that he said he wanted to do to me, and
- 45:04Speaker 3: it was all sexual in nature. And then he was
- 45:06Speaker 3: asking me like how much he could pay me to
- 45:09Speaker 3: FaceTime him or let him.
- 45:10Speaker 1: Instagram call me and all this other stuff.
- 45:12Speaker 3: And I'm like, I know that we talk about sex,
- 45:14Speaker 3: but that's not what I'm selling. I'm selling as on
- 45:15Speaker 3: this show and that's it. And so it was scary
- 45:19Speaker 3: because he bought a ticket. He emailed a screenshot of
- 45:23Speaker 3: his confirmation showing that he was coming out. Just I
- 45:26Speaker 3: felt like he was a huge guy. He's like six '
- 45:29Speaker 3: six and I'm like, you just you do too much.
- 45:32Speaker 3: And I think this curious kind of little at the
- 45:34Speaker 3: City Winery, which is where the live show was, and
- 45:36Speaker 3: I was just like, what if he gets aggressive or
- 45:39Speaker 3: just does too much, or it's like trying to follow
- 45:40Speaker 3: me out to the car.
- 45:41Speaker 1: That was probably the scariest Okay, and they actually let
- 45:45Speaker 1: him into the venue or so he didn't show up,
- 45:48Speaker 1: thank goodness, but he did buy a ticket and they
- 45:50Speaker 1: said that they've had problems with him before with other
- 45:54Speaker 1: shows that have come through.
- 45:56Speaker 3: Okay, so people like already knew his face and there
- 45:59Speaker 3: was yeah, I said, just refund the ticket. He can't come.
- 46:04Speaker 3: He's doing too much. Yeah, And I don't know. I'm
- 46:08Speaker 3: sure it's like some mental issues going on there, but
- 46:12Speaker 3: it's just too pushy and that makes people feel uncomfortable.
- 46:14Speaker 3: And sometimes, even like when people are really excited, sometimes
- 46:18Speaker 3: people do too much and it does make you a
- 46:21Speaker 3: little concerned, and then you have to remember, like, Okay,
- 46:24Speaker 3: people will know a lot about you because of what
- 46:27Speaker 3: you're sharing, and it just makes you nervous. When you
- 46:29Speaker 3: watch shows like what's that show on Netflix? You and
- 46:32Speaker 3: that guy is like telling all of this stuff from
- 46:35Speaker 3: like a little Facebook status or tweet or something, or
- 46:38Speaker 3: looking at a picture and looking at the background, and
- 46:40Speaker 3: so it just makes you a little nervous because you
- 46:43Speaker 3: never know who's paying attention to you, and you just hope, like,
- 46:47Speaker 3: nothing bad happens. Fortunately, nothing is bad has happened. But
- 46:51Speaker 3: that was like a scary situation.
- 46:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I was sharing with you prior that we had
- 46:55Speaker 1: Wheezy on mm hmm. Loved her episode, but what came
- 47:00Speaker 1: with her episode was there was like a stalker guy
- 47:03Speaker 1: that was like, at first it was like okay, then
- 47:07Speaker 1: it got like a hundred messages. It would be like
- 47:10Speaker 1: all these alerts from the same guy, and if you
- 47:13Speaker 1: didn't respond, it just got excessively bad. But I remember
- 47:17Speaker 1: he was following our show for a while, commenting on everyone.
- 47:21Speaker 1: But when Weezy had showed up, it was like the
- 47:24Speaker 1: type of stuff he was saying that he wanted to
- 47:27Speaker 1: do to her, and I was like, brother, like you can't,
- 47:30Speaker 1: you can't. And then it would just go from like
- 47:33Speaker 1: the eating while broke damns to like my DMNs and
- 47:36Speaker 1: then at one point I just reached out to her like, Yo,
- 47:39Speaker 1: this guy knows everybody in your camp. He's dropping names
- 47:42Speaker 1: like he knows addresses like, and she was like, man,
- 47:45Speaker 1: that stalker won't stop. And I'm like, yo, I'm gonna
- 47:47Speaker 1: save all this stuff in the DM. So if you
- 47:50Speaker 1: ever need to get a red, like your restraining orders
- 47:54Speaker 1: reinstated or need help, yeah, I got like, yeah, I
- 47:58Speaker 1: got a lot, like too much. And I was like realizing,
- 48:01Speaker 1: like even in that kind of similar like what he
- 48:04Speaker 1: was saying, it was like, Yo, you're objectifying this woman
- 48:08Speaker 1: who was actually on my shoul So you got to
- 48:09Speaker 1: actually see who she was and what she was about
- 48:11Speaker 1: and all she's learning in her career. But your brain
- 48:15Speaker 1: won't even accept who she is. You're just you've made
- 48:18Speaker 1: this idea of who she is in your brain, And
- 48:22Speaker 1: if you heard the episode, you would have walked away
- 48:24Speaker 1: knowing that this is not the way you would approach her,
- 48:27Speaker 1: you know, right. But I could see like that sickness,
- 48:29Speaker 1: like where someone can see you online and just kind
- 48:31Speaker 1: of assume.
- 48:32Speaker 3: Yeah, they assume that this piece of content that we're
- 48:35Speaker 3: putting out, which is very niche, but this is what
- 48:37Speaker 3: our show is about. So yes, that's all we're talking about. Yeah,
- 48:41Speaker 3: but that's not all you are about.
- 48:43Speaker 1: Like, am my everyday life? That's not what I'm talking about. No,
- 48:46Speaker 1: you're definitely seeing more of like an entrepreneur, and you
- 48:49Speaker 1: were sharing with me like a lot of the stuff
- 48:51Speaker 1: you looked up was like how you make money and
- 48:53Speaker 1: all this stuff. So I would say more so you're
- 48:56Speaker 1: impressive podcaster, but definitely more of an entrepreneur.
- 49:01Speaker 3: Yeah, Like I'm always thinking about it, and just like
- 49:04Speaker 3: I like to learn, I'm constantly trying to learn something
- 49:06Speaker 3: different and how things work and what are other ways
- 49:09Speaker 3: to do things, and what are things I haven't thought of?
- 49:13Speaker 3: And that's really what I'm talking about with people outside
- 49:16Speaker 3: of the show.
- 49:17Speaker 1: It's not about men. How's your dating life now? Girl?
- 49:23Speaker 1: You know, I really don't participate in it much. You
- 49:28Speaker 1: don't like you're not actively pursuing it anymore, not right now.
- 49:32Speaker 3: Like there was someone I was seeing, but right now
- 49:36Speaker 3: I feel like I can't focus on that. He's not
- 49:39Speaker 3: totally gone, but it's just not something that is at
- 49:41Speaker 3: the forefront of my mind. I have this show, of course,
- 49:45Speaker 3: but then I have some other things, some other projects
- 49:48Speaker 3: that I want to get off the ground. If I
- 49:49Speaker 3: could do it with this and get this success, and
- 49:53Speaker 3: I could start at you know, a better starting.
- 49:55Speaker 1: Point with other things.
- 49:56Speaker 3: I really need to put my energy into that, and
- 49:59Speaker 3: if you need me too much, I'm not gonna be
- 50:01Speaker 3: a good partner to you. And I can recognize that.
- 50:04Speaker 3: So it's like no love loss there. But I just
- 50:06Speaker 3: really can't focus on the dating right now. And I
- 50:09Speaker 3: think that people either don't believe that or they have
- 50:15Speaker 3: a hard time understanding that because many women are boy
- 50:17Speaker 3: crazy or you know, at my age, you want.
- 50:20Speaker 1: To be married and have kids and all that stuff, and.
- 50:21Speaker 3: It's just like why would you not actively do it?
- 50:24Speaker 3: But it's just not a top priority. And I'm okay
- 50:28Speaker 3: with not going on dates all the time because I'm
- 50:30Speaker 3: still gonna go out to eat. I'm still gonna do
- 50:31Speaker 3: all the fun things and have the experiences. You know,
- 50:34Speaker 3: are you at the place where you date yourself more
- 50:36Speaker 3: like you? Yeah, I'm a great dater. What do you
- 50:39Speaker 3: mean like when I'm dating myself? Okay, I take great
- 50:44Speaker 3: care of myself. I'm gonna paan for myself. I'm going
- 50:46Speaker 3: to great restaurants. I'm gonna have good experiences, and it's
- 50:50Speaker 3: fun when I can share that with somebody else. But
- 50:52Speaker 3: if it's just me, it's okay because I also I'm
- 50:56Speaker 3: fearful that like I'll turn into a person where they
- 51:00Speaker 3: always have to be attached to somebody. Yeah, and I
- 51:03Speaker 3: don't want that. And it's like make sure that I'm
- 51:05Speaker 3: happy with who I am and what I have going on,
- 51:07Speaker 3: and you'll be way more interesting for somebody else.
- 51:09Speaker 1: To Yeah that way, I agree. Yeah, I was little
- 51:13Speaker 1: like serial daters, like never single. It's a miracle if
- 51:16Speaker 1: you can get me single for like three months, like
- 51:18Speaker 1: it's bad. Like my I remember my pastor during one
- 51:21Speaker 1: of my breakups, was like just one year, if you
- 51:24Speaker 1: can make it one year, no kissing, no touching, no boyfriend.
- 51:29Speaker 1: I made it about a month and a half with
- 51:33Speaker 1: no kissing. I like fought like hell to make it
- 51:38Speaker 1: to a year with no boyfriend because you know, the
- 51:40Speaker 1: person I was kissing I was like, yoh.
- 51:42Speaker 2: What's up.
- 51:43Speaker 1: And I was like I'm trying something, So they didn't
- 51:46Speaker 1: really count. And then it wasn't until I had my daughter.
- 51:49Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, you know what at this point. Yeah,
- 51:53Speaker 1: now it's just like if I'm available for an hour
- 51:56Speaker 1: and I call them slots, Like if a dude's like
- 51:58Speaker 1: trying to holler, I'd be like you get a slot,
- 52:01Speaker 1: and they'd be like a slot. I'll be like on
- 52:04Speaker 1: this day, at this time, there's about a two hour window.
- 52:08Speaker 1: You know, this is what I want to do. If
- 52:10Speaker 1: you don't want to join me, that's fine. Well I'm
- 52:12Speaker 1: gonna do what I want to do during my slot.
- 52:15Speaker 1: And so it's all about me. It's really when you
- 52:17Speaker 1: think about So the one time the guy tried to
- 52:19Speaker 1: hit me back, well I have a slot, and I
- 52:22Speaker 1: was like, he was like, these are all the options
- 52:26Speaker 1: for my slot and I was just like, you know,
- 52:29Speaker 1: like the do do and he was like, all right,
- 52:31Speaker 1: I get it, Like yeah, it's like I don't. I'm
- 52:34Speaker 1: at the point where it's like it's me and I
- 52:36Speaker 1: don't have room to care about you.
- 52:38Speaker 3: Yeah, And that.
- 52:41Speaker 1: It's an amazing.
- 52:42Speaker 3: Feeling once you get to feeling okay with your own
- 52:44Speaker 3: company and putting yourself first, because I think people need
- 52:47Speaker 3: periods of time like that where you are a priority
- 52:51Speaker 3: to yourself, because sometimes people are always thinking about what
- 52:54Speaker 3: they're doing with somebody else, and I just don't want
- 52:55Speaker 3: to regret maybe putting somebody else's needs first way too much.
- 53:00Speaker 1: I did my regrets, men. Yeah, all my regrets is men. Now.
- 53:06Speaker 3: I used to say I regret a lot of the
- 53:07Speaker 3: men that I dated, like in college and when I
- 53:10Speaker 3: first moved to Atlanta, because I came here right after
- 53:12Speaker 3: I graduated. But I don't anymore because it was their
- 53:15Speaker 3: stories that catapulted the show. And so I'm forever grateful
- 53:19Speaker 3: to all of those horrible men out there that gave
- 53:22Speaker 3: me some great stories to tell. And so I can
- 53:25Speaker 3: laugh about it now, but it was not funny. I
- 53:27Speaker 3: used to be crying walslide and listening to Mariah Carey
- 53:29Speaker 3: wall sliding, sliding on the wall, sing R and B
- 53:36Speaker 3: in the shower, and then it's like, girl, you don't
- 53:38Speaker 3: even have an audience, this is not a music video.
- 53:39Speaker 3: What are you doing? I used to do some really
- 53:41Speaker 3: dramatic thing, yeah, and stare at myself in the mirror,
- 53:44Speaker 3: crying like you look stupid. After a minute, pick yourself up.
- 53:47Speaker 1: I don't know if I've ever done that.
- 53:49Speaker 3: Yes, I don't know.
- 53:51Speaker 1: I'm a rebounder though, I'm a rebounder, like it'd be like, oh,
- 53:55Speaker 1: that ball ain't working out, let's pick up a different ball.
- 53:57Speaker 3: I get tired of meeting somebody new because a lot
- 54:00Speaker 3: of times I don't find a lot of guys very interesting.
- 54:03Speaker 1: Yeah, you don't have to meet somebody new. There's always
- 54:05Speaker 1: like I used to always have like a if you
- 54:08Speaker 1: fuck up, there's thirty niggas that want to take that
- 54:10Speaker 1: CM and I'd be like they in the background somewhere.
- 54:15Speaker 3: But the background ones were always more of like a
- 54:17Speaker 3: physical connection than somebody who I would really really date,
- 54:22Speaker 3: because the physical I mean, I don't now that whole
- 54:24Speaker 3: a year without kissing and all.
- 54:26Speaker 1: That I ever do that? Well?
- 54:29Speaker 2: Did I?
- 54:30Speaker 3: Maybe I did a year without kissing or sex or
- 54:33Speaker 3: anything like that. I was probably coming out of a heartbreak.
- 54:37Speaker 3: I can't even remember. But sometimes you do have those
- 54:40Speaker 3: physical needs, but it's not as often. But a year
- 54:44Speaker 3: could I do a year now?
- 54:46Speaker 1: I don't know, here's a long time. That's a long time.
- 54:49Speaker 1: I don't know. All right, Well, what are some tid
- 54:53Speaker 1: beds of advice you would give to someone else trying
- 54:56Speaker 1: to get into your seat?
- 54:58Speaker 3: I would say, you know, if podcasting is what you're
- 55:02Speaker 3: interested in, don't be discouraged by the fact that there's
- 55:06Speaker 3: millions of podcasts, because most of these podcasts will not
- 55:09Speaker 3: be here in a year. Most people don't make it
- 55:11Speaker 3: very far. They give up. It might be a minute
- 55:14Speaker 3: before you make money, and you have to make sure
- 55:17Speaker 3: that you pick a subject matter that you are okay
- 55:20Speaker 3: with talking about for a while and make sure that
- 55:24Speaker 3: you I think people should structure their show. Have some structure,
- 55:27Speaker 3: because everybody doesn't and you don't have to, but I
- 55:29Speaker 3: would say try it out just to see and then
- 55:31Speaker 3: that way it helps you so that you don't have
- 55:33Speaker 3: those lulls in your conversation and just stay focused and like,
- 55:37Speaker 3: don't listen to a lot of negativity, take constructive criticism.
- 55:41Speaker 3: But when people are telling you shouldn't do it because
- 55:43Speaker 3: everybody else is doing it, and why you don't listen
- 55:47Speaker 3: to that, just keep going. It doesn't matter if you're
- 55:49Speaker 3: popular online already or not, because you can really turn
- 55:53Speaker 3: it into something like I was not popular online. I
- 55:57Speaker 3: didn't I was just a girl and her friends who
- 56:01Speaker 3: were doing a show about their own experiences and organically
- 56:05Speaker 3: growing the show into what it is now. And we've
- 56:08Speaker 3: been able to secure a lot of sponsorships, We've been
- 56:11Speaker 3: able to do live shows all across the country. We
- 56:15Speaker 3: even got to do one in Canada last year. I
- 56:17Speaker 3: was really excited about that because now feeling like Candy
- 56:20Speaker 3: Birds when she was like I'm world wide, bitch, and
- 56:22Speaker 3: it's not really worldwide, but I'm gonna say it.
- 56:24Speaker 1: I was about to ask that, but I'm glad you
- 56:25Speaker 1: said that.
- 56:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it was exciting because it's like, Wow, even though
- 56:29Speaker 3: it's right up the street, it's still like, there's all
- 56:31Speaker 3: these people over here that are paying to come see us,
- 56:34Speaker 3: and we get to have this experience and we get
- 56:36Speaker 3: to go travel to different places that maybe we can
- 56:39Speaker 3: go and meet different people. It's just been really cool.
- 56:42Speaker 3: So stay focused and just keep trying and don't be
- 56:46Speaker 3: afraid to switch things up. But I also tell people like,
- 56:51Speaker 3: don't just expect people to just come knocking at your
- 56:54Speaker 3: door for anything, whether it be guests or advertisers or anything.
- 57:01Speaker 3: And don't be afraid to reach out like there have
- 57:04Speaker 3: been shows where it's like or smaller shows that have
- 57:07Speaker 3: reached out to us, for example, not that we're super huge,
- 57:11Speaker 3: but we've done all right, and they'll be scared to
- 57:15Speaker 3: even ask to come on the show, and it's like,
- 57:17Speaker 3: well why not, Yeah, Like come on, can't you talk
- 57:20Speaker 3: or you're gonna get shy. That's really what I'm worried about.
- 57:22Speaker 3: I don't care who you are. If one person listens
- 57:24Speaker 3: to your podcast that is okay, can you hold a
- 57:26Speaker 3: conversation and can we laugh about something together? Okay, come on, Like,
- 57:30Speaker 3: don't be scared. I think I do it still. But
- 57:34Speaker 3: operating in fear a lot of times will hold you
- 57:36Speaker 3: back from so much and you just never know what
- 57:39Speaker 3: could happen if you just ask, or you just try,
- 57:41Speaker 3: or you don't give up.
- 57:43Speaker 1: How what advice would you give in regards to consistency.
- 57:48Speaker 3: You've got to be consistent. If you got issues with consistency,
- 57:51Speaker 3: I don't know if podcasting.
- 57:53Speaker 1: Is really what you should do.
- 57:54Speaker 3: Maybe you should work behind the scenes, because it's very
- 57:57Speaker 3: important to be consistent because this is a thing. People
- 58:02Speaker 3: start to listen to podcasts or watch them and it
- 58:05Speaker 3: becomes a part of their routine. Right if you go
- 58:08Speaker 3: too long without uploading, they might forget you. And just
- 58:11Speaker 3: like you were talking about your slots with dating, people
- 58:13Speaker 3: have slots for free time or to listen to the podcast.
- 58:15Speaker 3: So if they find another show when you haven't been uploading,
- 58:20Speaker 3: you haven't said anything. That can be hard. And to
- 58:24Speaker 3: get those people back it's hard. It's like even when
- 58:27Speaker 3: you don't post on social media, you've got to stay consistent.
- 58:29Speaker 3: And you gotta keep pushing stuff out and if you
- 58:32Speaker 3: need a break, you know, let your audience know, or
- 58:34Speaker 3: if it's I know, some people do seasons instead of
- 58:37Speaker 3: going straight through. We've never done seasons, and that has
- 58:41Speaker 3: been taxing, but I'm glad that we haven't because sometimes
- 58:45Speaker 3: if you take too long of a break, you might
- 58:46Speaker 3: not come back. And it's just like TV shows, like
- 58:50Speaker 3: I can't think of the show's name even right now,
- 58:52Speaker 3: but I saw people talking on Twitter. They were saying
- 58:53Speaker 3: the show was going to come back next year, and
- 58:55Speaker 3: people are like, don't even worry about it because it's
- 58:56Speaker 3: been too long. We've forgot about the story and it's
- 58:59Speaker 3: a new show every day. You really gotta you gotta
- 59:02Speaker 3: be consistent.
- 59:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, even with our side we are with
- 59:05Speaker 1: the Black Effect Network, but for a long time we
- 59:08Speaker 1: posted East Coast time and then every once in a while, man,
- 59:12Speaker 1: they'll slip up at that time. So I'm like, you
- 59:14Speaker 1: don't understand. People take jogs whatever the heck, that's their routine,
- 59:18Speaker 1: and we can someone to take that slot because we
- 59:23Speaker 1: didn't show up at that time. But I do know
- 59:26Speaker 1: what us where we have to do season based because
- 59:28Speaker 1: we're so heavily guessed that we have to pre tape
- 59:32Speaker 1: a lot. Yeah, we pre tape a lot. Yeah.
- 59:34Speaker 3: We usually do like two episodes in a day, and
- 59:38Speaker 3: then we might record for three weeks and then take
- 59:40Speaker 3: a week or two off or two weeks and then
- 59:44Speaker 3: a week off two weeks, and then we can take
- 59:45Speaker 3: like a longer break because we also travel a lot,
- 59:50Speaker 3: and so sometimes it can be hard, and then it's
- 59:52Speaker 3: also just easier to have to go to the studio
- 59:55Speaker 3: and knock this out in a day to do two
- 59:57Speaker 3: episodes in one Yeah, yeah, yep.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: Well, thank you so much for your time and feeding
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: me and blessing me. Shout out to where everyone could
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: keep up with you and you guys can keep up
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: with me at.
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: Kiki said, So it's k I K I S A
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: I D S O on all social media and then
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: Cocktails Dirty Discussions is the name.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: Of my podcast.
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: You can check it out and also our website I'm
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: Curious to Know dot com. We didn't even get to
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: talk about that, but we came out with a conversational
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: card deck, and so you can buy that. It's like
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: one hundred and ten different questions to ask if you're
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: on a date with somebody, and sometimes it's kind of
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: hard to you know, spark up a conversation or you're
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: nervous or whatever.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: You can even play with your friends.
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: And that's something that even when the show is done
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: and we don't want to do it anymore, that's a
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: product that lives on forever. That's another tip.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: I'm curious to know. I'm curious to know card deck
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: dot com.
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: I'm curious to know dot com.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm curious to know dot com. All right, Thanks guys.
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: Peace out.
