- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
- 0:09Speaker 1: My name is Beaumontie Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:11Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. We got a lot going on in the
- 0:23Speaker 1: world to talk about. But the first thing I want
- 0:26Speaker 1: to get out here and talk about is the fact
- 0:29Speaker 1: that we don't know nothing. And I'm going to tell
- 0:32Speaker 1: you how I know that we don't know nothing. We
- 0:35Speaker 1: don't know nothing because last night and really throughout the
- 0:39Speaker 1: duration of this whole season, Sam Darnold been out here
- 0:46Speaker 1: throwing the ball to, you know, there's one exception I
- 0:50Speaker 1: can think of, but otherwise, Sam Darnold out here throwing
- 0:53Speaker 1: a ball to a bunch of white boys.
- 0:55Speaker 2: And they about to go to the Super Bowl.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Everything you ever thought you knew about the world goes
- 1:00Speaker 1: out the window when you think about that. Sam Darnold
- 1:02Speaker 1: out there throwing it to a Cooper, a Jake. What's
- 1:07Speaker 1: the other one, Ryan?
- 1:08Speaker 3: Not even a Jake, a Bobo.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Yeah, Jake Bobo, I was gonna say Jake Bobo, right?
- 1:13Speaker 2: There's another white dude he out there throwing it to,
- 1:14Speaker 2: and ain't none of them like Matt Conkey. He fast, right? Yeah.
- 1:18Speaker 2: They just out here, I guess Cooper Cup at one
- 1:21Speaker 2: point was fast.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Was fast.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Yeah. It's out here.
- 1:24Speaker 1: And by the way, they didn't just win that game
- 1:27Speaker 1: like with Sam Darnold around. They won the game with
- 1:30Speaker 1: Sam Darnold throwing for like 800 yards.
- 1:34Speaker 2: What are we doing here? What is the world?
- 1:37Speaker 1: Like as much as we talk about that with the
- 1:39Speaker 1: Seattle defense, that isn't what happened in this game.
- 1:43Speaker 2: That wasn't it.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Like, you know, I've been saying, hey, man, ain't no,
- 1:46Speaker 1: get out of here with this Matthew Stafford going to
- 1:49Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame situation if he lose a game
- 1:50Speaker 1: to Sand Arnold. But I can't even really fully, like,
- 1:54Speaker 1: go full-throated about that one because he threw for 800
- 1:56Speaker 1: yards too.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:59Speaker 2: And they're going. They're going. I just want to say
- 2:02Speaker 2: this right.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Fast because it's, I don't want to seem like I'm
- 2:06Speaker 1: insulting guys, and I don't want to really do this
- 2:08Speaker 1: during Super Bowl week because it's not fair, but I'm
- 2:11Speaker 1: trying to think how far back we got to go
- 2:13Speaker 1: to get a quarterback matchup quite like the one that
- 2:15Speaker 1: we're going to have in this Super Bowl. And it's
- 2:17Speaker 1: interesting because Drake may, two guys that were number three
- 2:20Speaker 1: pick in the draft, Drake may ultimately be that guy.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Sam Darnold turned out not to be that guy, but
- 2:25Speaker 1: has proven to be a guy who has actually not
- 2:28Speaker 1: been that good for like the last month and change,
- 2:30Speaker 1: but suddenly it all got dialed up in the course
- 2:33Speaker 1: of this game, and here we are.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Twenty twenty six. There we go.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I want to call Cortez and tell him a happy
- 2:42Speaker 1: new year. Just just to do it after that situation. Hey, man,
- 2:45Speaker 1: I have to say that was an excellent football game
- 2:49Speaker 1: with the Rams and the Seahawks. It's one of those
- 2:55Speaker 1: where I don't even feel like analyzing it really gets
- 2:59Speaker 1: down to the point. Or it only matters but so much,
- 3:04Speaker 1: I guess, is the way to look at it. I
- 3:05Speaker 1: found myself, as I was watching it, being less like, man,
- 3:09Speaker 1: I got to think about what we're going to talk
- 3:11Speaker 1: about tomorrow. Then I felt, in the course of watching it, like, damn, man.
- 3:17Speaker 2: This is fun. This is what you want. This is
- 3:20Speaker 2: one of those where.
- 3:24Speaker 2: You almost wish, well, I don't know if that's a
- 3:26Speaker 2: fair way to put it.
- 3:27Speaker 1: I was just going to say, like, this is certainly
- 3:29Speaker 1: a rivalry of sorts, I imagine, to the people who
- 3:33Speaker 1: really care about these teams. And then that even gets
- 3:37Speaker 1: to be a little bit weird because of the Rams
- 3:39Speaker 1: and their relocation. But if this were, like, a traditional rivalry, like, Ryan,
- 3:43Speaker 1: can you imagine if this was the Falcons and the
- 3:45Speaker 1: Saints having this kind of game? Now, of course, the
- 3:48Speaker 1: Falcons and the Saints would never play each other this
- 3:49Speaker 1: late in the year.
- 3:50Speaker 3: Never this late in the year with this good a
- 3:52Speaker 3: quarterback play on both sides.
- 3:55Speaker 2: It would never happen. Understand this. I don't know if
- 3:57Speaker 2: you even realize this.
- 3:58Speaker 1: In the year 1991, the Saints and the Falcons played
- 4:02Speaker 1: against each other in the wildcard round of the playoffs
- 4:06Speaker 1: at the Superdome. And the Falcons won that game, and
- 4:10Speaker 1: the winner was going to rack up their first playoff
- 4:13Speaker 1: win ever. Two teams that have been in the league
- 4:16Speaker 1: for 25 fucking years. And the only way one of
- 4:20Speaker 1: them could win a playoff game was to play the other.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Which, which, which, where was a bear planet?
- 4:25Speaker 2: That was a bear. That was a bear.
- 4:27Speaker 3: For who?
- 4:28Speaker 2: No.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Oh, Bobby a bear was playing for the saints.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Chris Miller, I believe was starting.
- 4:34Speaker 3: That's kind of my point.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Yes.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Yes. No.
- 4:36Speaker 2: A bear got there shortly thereafter.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Yeah. I was a Bobby a bear throw six interceptions
- 4:41Speaker 1: against the Oilers.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Six interceptions. But Seattle. Seattle.
- 4:50Speaker 1: When you can win when your main unit ain't really
- 4:53Speaker 1: doing the thing.
- 4:55Speaker 2: You're doing, you have got a team.
- 4:58Speaker 1: And they're one of those teams that just where you
- 5:00Speaker 1: watch them and you're like, oh, they look well coached.
- 5:03Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 5:04Speaker 1: Like, everybody seems to be where they supposed to be.
- 5:07Speaker 1: The one time they didn't seem well coached, it seems
- 5:10Speaker 1: very clear to me, Ryan, that that boy Reek Willen
- 5:12Speaker 1: be doing dumb shit all the time.
- 5:15Speaker 2: And the way that I know that is, look, I
- 5:18Speaker 2: ain't gonna lie, man.
- 5:19Speaker 1: And you know, Y'all will understand what I'm saying if
- 5:22Speaker 1: you get a little bit mad. I thought that was
- 5:24Speaker 1: some real Caucasian officiating when they hit him for that
- 5:28Speaker 1: 15 yards for like taunting the sideline. Like he wasn't
- 5:31Speaker 1: over there grabbing his jewels, mooning them, even imaginary mooning them.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Whatever he said had to have been particularly egregious.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Well, it seemed like the ref told him to stop
- 5:41Speaker 1: And then he kept on going.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Then that's very Caucasian officially.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:45Speaker 2: I'm just saying.
- 5:46Speaker 3: You tested that man's authority.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Whatever happened to let him play, right? Y'all always get
- 5:50Speaker 1: out of here talking about this.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Let him play situation. Now, I'm inclined to cut that
- 5:54Speaker 2: man some slack.
- 5:55Speaker 1: And I know this ain't going to mean a whole
- 5:56Speaker 1: lot to y'all, but that's a Fort Worth decision making
- 5:59Speaker 1: that he was engaging in right there. And he from
- 6:01Speaker 1: Fort Worth. Like, that's, Funky Town don't think stuff all
- 6:04Speaker 1: the way through. It just doesn't work like that. But
- 6:08Speaker 1: when he got to the sideline and that other cat
- 6:11Speaker 1: was getting all of them about it, I just realized, oh,
- 6:15Speaker 1: he must do things like this all the time.
- 6:19Speaker 3: I told you not to be doing stuff like that.
- 6:21Speaker 1: I would also love to see what Rick Wooden's draft
- 6:25Speaker 1: profile was. He is a 6'4 corner who ran a
- 6:28Speaker 1: 4-6 at the Combine and was drafted in the fifth round,
- 6:38Speaker 1: what was he doing in those interviews? What was he
- 6:42Speaker 1: saying to those people? To where they were like.
- 6:44Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Maybe we'll get him another day.
- 6:47Speaker 2: No, no, but I tell you this. that is definitely
- 6:50Speaker 2: a guy Pete Carroll drafts.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Yes.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Pete Carroll's like, oh yeah.
- 6:53Speaker 3: We'll figure it out.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Six, four.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Look, six, four quarters are unwieldy because it's a lot
- 6:59Speaker 2: of like small space maneuvering, but at the same time, six, four,
- 7:02Speaker 2: run a four, two, six.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Yeah. We can figure something out.
- 7:06Speaker 1: We can see what this is, but okay. How much,
- 7:08Speaker 1: I mean, we'll have two weeks to talk about this.
- 7:10Speaker 1: How much Sam Darnold are we about to be out
- 7:12Speaker 1: here believing? And if Sam Darnold and the Seahawks win
- 7:16Speaker 1: the Superbowl together, How long before somebody tells me that
- 7:19Speaker 1: he belongs in the Hall of Fame?
- 7:24Speaker 2: Just throwing it out there. Just asking the question. We
- 7:27Speaker 2: just out here.
- 7:27Speaker 1: It's harder than ever to get in the Hall of Fame.
- 7:29Speaker 1: And we just out here like that's everybody. And yeah,
- 7:31Speaker 1: but that's afraid we got to retire like the the
- 7:34Speaker 1: future Hall of Famer. We don't need to know.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Right. You know what I mean?
- 7:38Speaker 1: Like, and that's and that's not just about Stafford. Now, look,
- 7:40Speaker 1: if you guys want to put Stafford in the Hall
- 7:42Speaker 1: of Fame, I'm kind of giving up on the idea,
- 7:44Speaker 1: although I'm still holding strong on Eli Manning.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Y'all seem to at least be putting up a fight
- 7:48Speaker 2: about that madness.
- 7:50Speaker 5: But.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I already forgot what I was going to say right there.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Don't you hate it when that happens? Yeah. I'm still mad.
- 8:00Speaker 1: I was just telling Brian, man, I had a line
- 8:02Speaker 1: that was so cold and I didn't want to hit
- 8:03Speaker 1: him with it last night because I didn't want to
- 8:05Speaker 1: ruin it when I said it this morning and I
- 8:07Speaker 1: acted like I am not 45 years old and I
- 8:10Speaker 1: woke up and it's never coming back.
- 8:13Speaker 3: It's gone.
- 8:14Speaker 1: And I'm telling you, you were going to be in
- 8:16Speaker 1: the floor. I mean, it was first class, amazing work.
- 8:22Speaker 2: And poof.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Gone.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Now it's gone.
- 8:25Speaker 1: But I do think, though, and by the way, for
- 8:26Speaker 1: those of you who are wondering, gee, why aren't you
- 8:29Speaker 1: talking about the AFC championship game for what?
- 8:34Speaker 2: What is there to talk about?
- 8:36Speaker 1: Like, dead ass, what is there for us to talk about?
- 8:39Speaker 1: Other than the fact of, you know what, this is
- 8:42Speaker 1: what there is to talk about when it comes to
- 8:43Speaker 1: that game. There are some lies that people have to tell.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I'm an adult.
- 8:50Speaker 1: I recognize this. Sean Payton had to lie to us
- 8:56Speaker 1: about Jerry Stim.
- 8:58Speaker 2: You'll see. Just watch.
- 9:01Speaker 5: I did.
- 9:02Speaker 2: And those were three terrible hours.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Okay?
- 9:06Speaker 1: He's a backup quarterback. You know, if I put it
- 9:09Speaker 1: to you like this, where they were just like, yo,
- 9:11Speaker 1: Sean Payton believed in him.
- 9:13Speaker 2: No, he didn't. You know how I know he didn't
- 9:15Speaker 2: believe in him? Because he drafted Bo Nix. You know
- 9:19Speaker 2: what I'm saying? He went out there and drafted a
- 9:20Speaker 2: quarterback about his age. I'm just saying.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Auburn teammates.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Right, right.
- 9:28Speaker 2: That all of us were, of whom all of us
- 9:31Speaker 2: were wildly skeptical. Yeah.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Right?
- 9:33Speaker 2: And he was out there like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Let me go ahead and get me, let me go
- 9:36Speaker 1: ahead and get me a real quarterback. And he went
- 9:39Speaker 1: and got Bo Nix, right? So Sten was out there.
- 9:42Speaker 2: I felt so bad.
- 9:42Speaker 1: He was suffering from full onset lemon booty that first drive.
- 9:45Speaker 1: And as soon as I sent a tweet about it,
- 9:47Speaker 1: he threw that one pass. And then after that, they
- 9:50Speaker 1: were done. They had that situation. I have only really
- 9:53Speaker 1: recalled seeing this in golf where at the turn of
- 9:57Speaker 1: the weather changes, you're like half the people play around
- 10:00Speaker 1: under one set of conditions and then the other half
- 10:02Speaker 1: play it under another. And that's what the second half
- 10:04Speaker 1: was in that game. I mean, it was at the
- 10:06Speaker 1: point where Vrabel was calling. Just throw it away.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Plays right.
- 10:10Speaker 3: The only thing that you beat is Drake may take
- 10:13Speaker 3: in a dump sack. That's it. And he called the
- 10:15Speaker 3: whole game avoiding that outcome.
- 10:17Speaker 2: And by the way, those two outcomes were totally on
- 10:20Speaker 2: the board.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Yes.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Totally on the board. And I want to say this
- 10:23Speaker 2: to Drake May right now, okay?
- 10:26Speaker 1: Sam Darnold has officially exceeded every expectation that we had
- 10:30Speaker 1: after we recalibrated from our priors, right? I think Bayesian
- 10:34Speaker 1: is the term that we're looking for, right? We had
- 10:36Speaker 1: our priors. We adjusted our priors.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Is it Bayesian or Keynesian?
- 10:40Speaker 2: These are Bayesian.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Keynesian is when you start talking about macroeconomic stuff, right?
- 10:45Speaker 1: Bayesian is the probability things, okay?
- 10:47Speaker 2: Yes.
- 10:49Speaker 1: We made the adjustment to the priors. Sam Darnold is
- 10:51Speaker 1: good money forever. There's nothing else he has to do.
- 10:53Speaker 1: He exceeded our expectations two years in a row. There's
- 10:57Speaker 1: nothing he has to do, okay?
- 10:58Speaker 2: He's who he is.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Drake May, I'll tell you this right now. If you
- 11:04Speaker 1: win this Super Bowl, and we know quarterbacks don't win games.
- 11:09Speaker 1: You're non-clicking motherfuckers, okay? Just so we don't have no
- 11:12Speaker 1: misunderstanding there. Quarterbacks don't win games. But if Drake May
- 11:17Speaker 1: is the quarterback, of the winning team under these circumstances.
- 11:22Speaker 1: You are good, okay? It will make your career so
- 11:29Speaker 1: much easier. I think Drake May is very talented. I
- 11:32Speaker 1: think the ceiling is very high. Do I think Drake
- 11:35Speaker 1: May will be better than Josh Allen?
- 11:36Speaker 5: Nope.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Do I think that he will be better than Lamar Jackson? Nope.
- 11:42Speaker 1: But we about to be on them boys' necks from
- 11:45Speaker 1: here into forever. Because we're about to watch either Drake
- 11:49Speaker 1: May or Sam Darnold win a Super Bowl. And those
- 11:53Speaker 1: guys haven't even been there.
- 11:56Speaker 2: They ain't even touched the grass in the Super Bowl.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Drake May gets this one, brother. You straight. You straight.
- 12:05Speaker 2: And you're not like Dan Marino.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Dan Marino got there in his second year, but he
- 12:08Speaker 1: had to go against literally one of the greatest football
- 12:10Speaker 1: teams of all time, the 1984 49ers. And when you
- 12:13Speaker 1: think about the 49ers, all you need to know about
- 12:16Speaker 1: 84 was the defense was probably better than the offense.
- 12:20Speaker 3: OK, right.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Everything you ever heard about the 49ers. And that's not
- 12:23Speaker 1: saying the offense was overrated. The defense, Ryan, they had
- 12:27Speaker 1: three pro bowlers in the secondary defense.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Jesus.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:32Speaker 3: Let me just go.
- 12:33Speaker 1: What are we talking about here, all right? Dan Burrito, never.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Drake May, you go ahead and do this right now.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Honestly, you could.
- 12:41Speaker 1: If you win this right now and you keep playing,
- 12:44Speaker 1: I'm going to be looking at you like I look
- 12:45Speaker 1: at Klay Thompson. Like, dude, why are you still here? Brother,
- 12:48Speaker 1: if I was Klay Thompson, I wouldn't even know. Like,
- 12:51Speaker 1: there would be some games I would miss because I forgot.
- 12:54Speaker 2: I'd be like, damn, we got a game tonight?
- 12:55Speaker 3: Which no one would be surprised by because it's Klay Thompson.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Because it's Klay Thompson and the Mavericks.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Like, why would you keep up with the Mavericks schedule, right?
- 13:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Like, if I was Klay Thompson, it would be some
- 13:04Speaker 1: games where I'd be like, damn, we got a game tomorrow.
- 13:06Speaker 1: All right, but hold on, man. Let me call my girl. No, man,
- 13:08Speaker 1: I got to see. We got plans tomorrow, man. Let
- 13:11Speaker 1: me see if she can change them. I mean, look,
- 13:12Speaker 1: if we can change our plans, I'll come.
- 13:14Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? But otherwise, like, Drake may
- 13:16Speaker 2: win a Super Bowl. Hey, man, all we going to
- 13:18Speaker 2: do is... You've accomplished it all.
- 13:21Speaker 1: This also sucks because, Ryan, we have the worst combination
- 13:23Speaker 1: of things. The obnoxious Boston fan, they back in the
- 13:26Speaker 1: game because the Patriots are back where they were, and
- 13:29Speaker 1: they also have a legitimate underdog feel-good story sort of
- 13:32Speaker 1: element of it.
- 13:33Speaker 3: They can legitimately say no one believes in us.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Because I sure didn't.
- 13:37Speaker 3: I sure didn't. I sure don't.
- 13:38Speaker 2: I sure didn't.
- 13:39Speaker 1: I sure don't. Now, I want to be fair to May, though,
- 13:42Speaker 1: in the sense that he's played two games in terrible weather.
- 13:46Speaker 5: Right.
- 13:46Speaker 1: I would say that he has looked terrible. I have
- 13:48Speaker 1: not felt good about the way that he has played.
- 13:51Speaker 1: But there are stories around it. Now, the issue for
- 13:54Speaker 1: that Super Bowl and what we're going to talk about
- 13:55Speaker 1: for a couple of weeks is that guy against an
- 13:58Speaker 1: excellent defense.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Yes.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Based on what we've seen so far in the postseason.
- 14:05Speaker 1: We're asking for a lot here. On the other side
- 14:07Speaker 1: is going to be Sam Darnold. Playing against an NFL
- 14:10Speaker 1: defense in a game that really matters. Could go either way, right?
- 14:16Speaker 2: This could be it. But I'm going to give it
- 14:18Speaker 2: to the NFL, man. Y'all gave us a great postseason
- 14:21Speaker 2: so far. You did.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Like, I've thoroughly enjoyed all of this, everything that we've gotten.
- 14:27Speaker 1: I think that this has been a great, like, exhibition
- 14:31Speaker 1: of football, which is very important because what we don't
- 14:34Speaker 1: have is great teams.
- 14:36Speaker 2: And I know, what was it?
- 14:37Speaker 1: I mean, a shot said it was like the best
- 14:39Speaker 1: DVOA NFC championship game of all time or something like that.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Yeah, someone's going to have to break that down like
- 14:47Speaker 3: a fraction for me because I did not.
- 14:50Speaker 1: I never once watched, and I feel like I've watched
- 14:52Speaker 1: a decent bit of these two teams.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Right. Never quite saw it, right?
- 14:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Never, never quite saw it. You got to, I don't know.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Obviously like giant peaks on both sides, but not, you know,
- 15:06Speaker 3: you couldn't keep the consistency.
- 15:08Speaker 2: No.
- 15:08Speaker 3: Throughout the year.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Well, let me ask you this about Denver.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Do you think the outcome would have been different if
- 15:17Speaker 1: Bo Nix had played?
- 15:18Speaker 2: And my answer is I'm not sure.
- 15:19Speaker 3: I'm not sure because the weather was so drastic.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Right. Because here's what worries me. Whoa. Wow. Almost did
- 15:27Speaker 2: something sacrilegious. Bo Nix.
- 15:31Speaker 3: You didn't do it. You got close. You were around
- 15:35Speaker 3: in second.
- 15:35Speaker 2: They both went to Auburn. You know what I'm saying?
- 15:37Speaker 2: They both went to Auburn. Bo Nix would get out
- 15:40Speaker 2: there and still think, I can do something.
- 15:43Speaker 5: Right.
- 15:44Speaker 2: I can make this happen. And look, they got what?
- 15:48Speaker 2: Touchdown in the first half, right?
- 15:50Speaker 3: Right.
- 15:51Speaker 1: That was the reasonable expectation was that you could get
- 15:53Speaker 1: a touchdown in the first half. They got the touchdown
- 15:57Speaker 1: in the first half.
- 15:59Speaker 2: But I don't know. I just, I came out of that.
- 16:03Speaker 2: It's so interesting.
- 16:04Speaker 1: I came out of that with, wow, that one game
- 16:05Speaker 1: was so good. I don't even really feel the need
- 16:07Speaker 1: to talk about it. And then I came out of
- 16:09Speaker 1: it with that other game was so bad. I don't,
- 16:13Speaker 1: want to talk about it. I didn't want any parts
- 16:18Speaker 1: of it. And now, Ryan, it's a long two weeks.
- 16:21Speaker 5: Correct.
- 16:23Speaker 2: It's a really, really long two weeks that is coming.
- 16:27Speaker 1: My favorite thing of the long two weeks is the NBA.
- 16:30Speaker 1: I don't know if it just worked out accidentally, but
- 16:32Speaker 1: that trade deadline being right during Super Bowl week has
- 16:34Speaker 1: come in handy the last... It was one thing with
- 16:39Speaker 1: Super Bowl stuff when we didn't have as much media
- 16:41Speaker 1: and as much space to fill. In that week of
- 16:44Speaker 1: Super Bowl, like the media day and everything else, like
- 16:47Speaker 1: you'd go to your whole job and you'd come back
- 16:48Speaker 1: and be like, ooh, Super Bowl stuff. And it would
- 16:50Speaker 1: be this treat the whole week that you would get to.
- 16:53Speaker 1: But now that we are always online.
- 16:54Speaker 3: We're always talking about football.
- 16:55Speaker 1: We ain't got enough stuff. We already know who all
- 16:58Speaker 1: these people are. You know, like we are fully loaded
- 17:02Speaker 1: up and aware of who all these people are. So
- 17:05Speaker 1: by the time that week comes, we're just like, yo, man,
- 17:06Speaker 1: we're a little tapped out, man. Can we just like,
- 17:09Speaker 1: can we get to the games? Can we get this? Now,
- 17:12Speaker 1: if you want to tell me that Marshawn Lynch going
- 17:13Speaker 1: to post up with Ginger Cuz and they going to
- 17:16Speaker 1: do a daily briefing.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Yeah, we're here.
- 17:19Speaker 2: I'll watch that. I'm 100% here for that.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Otherwise, let us be glad for the great football that
- 17:27Speaker 1: we have had so far and cross our fingers that
- 17:29Speaker 1: the rest will be decent.
- 17:37Speaker 3: All right.
- 17:37Speaker 1: So, you know, I feel like all of us got
- 17:40Speaker 1: kind of caught up in small sample stuff over the
- 17:44Speaker 1: last couple of weeks or whatever. And what I mean
- 17:46Speaker 1: by that is the Pittsburgh Steelers have only hired three
- 17:52Speaker 1: coaches since 1969. Okay. Those three coaches bore similar characteristics.
- 17:59Speaker 1: They were young coaches who were in their first jobs,
- 18:02Speaker 1: who were defensive guys. They all ultimately wound up being
- 18:06Speaker 1: coaches who won Super Bowls. So as a result, we
- 18:10Speaker 1: all thought that when the Steelers hired a head coach,
- 18:13Speaker 1: that it would be a defensive guy in his 30s
- 18:17Speaker 1: who never had problems. a job before, but all I
- 18:21Speaker 1: can assume is that we were operating off of small samples, right?
- 18:27Speaker 1: Like this wasn't quite like the Raiders after they let
- 18:32Speaker 1: John Madden go and what he let him go.
- 18:34Speaker 2: John Madden left.
- 18:35Speaker 1: But after John Madden left every coach that Al Davis
- 18:39Speaker 1: hired was an young offensive guy. And the reason was, well, Yeah,
- 18:45Speaker 1: mostly young. Either way, they're all offensive guys. And the
- 18:47Speaker 1: reason was Al Davis ran his own defense, right? He
- 18:50Speaker 1: didn't need a defensive coordinator. He just needed an offensive
- 18:52Speaker 1: coordinator and then somebody to call plays on Sunday, right?
- 18:56Speaker 1: But we had enough times that he had changed over
- 18:58Speaker 1: coaches that we understood that that right there was the pattern.
- 19:02Speaker 5: Okay.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Nope, the Steelers apparently just hired three coaches because everything
- 19:07Speaker 1: that we thought we knew about them, they took it
- 19:09Speaker 1: and they wiped their sooty keister with it because they
- 19:12Speaker 1: went and hired Mike McCarthy to be their head coach.
- 19:16Speaker 1: And I think that we are typically a little bit
- 19:19Speaker 1: too hard on Mike McCarthy, and I have explained in
- 19:22Speaker 1: the past why I think it is that y'all are
- 19:24Speaker 1: so hard on Mike McCarthy, and it's because he's chubby.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Right?
- 19:28Speaker 1: The rules get all messed up when chubby people come
- 19:30Speaker 1: out here. Y'all know how y'all treat chubby people, and
- 19:33Speaker 1: if you don't want to believe me.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Go ask a chubby person.
- 19:36Speaker 1: They will tell you how they get treated, but there's
- 19:39Speaker 1: a way in which people don't take Super Bowl champion
- 19:42Speaker 1: Mike McCarthy seriously that I think is tied to his weight. Ryan,
- 19:46Speaker 1: you sent me to the joint with the numbers where
- 19:49Speaker 1: he basically it's kind of like he got the same
- 19:51Speaker 1: track record as joe as uh what's his name john harbaugh.
- 19:54Speaker 3: I mean him tomlin and john harbaugh are kind of
- 19:58Speaker 3: spider-man me and each other yes with the exact same
- 20:00Speaker 3: resume now obviously i would not say the same level
- 20:03Speaker 3: of coach but the same level of resume.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, but when you look at it, it's very, very,
- 20:09Speaker 2: very similar.
- 20:10Speaker 3: It's about 170 wins. It's one Super Bowl and not
- 20:13Speaker 3: a lot of playoff wins since the first Trump presidency.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Right, and when.
- 20:18Speaker 1: he got this job, McCarthy, when he got this job
- 20:20Speaker 1: at the Cowboys, we're like, what in the world were
- 20:22Speaker 1: they doing? And by the way, they were just fine, right?
- 20:25Speaker 1: The problem was not Mike McCarthy. Now, there were some
- 20:27Speaker 1: problems that you could say you have with his offense,
- 20:29Speaker 1: but the problem was not Mike McCarthy. We are all
- 20:34Speaker 1: a little bit too down on him. However, let me
- 20:38Speaker 1: tell you what I have never seen Mike McCarthy do.
- 20:42Speaker 1: I have never seen Mike McCarthy coach a quarterback who
- 20:47Speaker 1: was less.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Than very good, or dare I say excellent, okay?
- 20:54Speaker 1: He got a version of Brett Favre that was still
- 20:57Speaker 1: pretty good. He got Aaron Rodgers when he, at least
- 21:03Speaker 1: regular season-wise, was as good as any quarterback we have seen,
- 21:07Speaker 1: just in terms of the pure execution of playing football.
- 21:10Speaker 1: He was as good as anybody that we had ever seen, right?
- 21:12Speaker 1: Removed team success from it, everything else. Just like, wow,
- 21:14Speaker 1: I can't believe how good this guy is. And then
- 21:17Speaker 1: Dak Prescott, It was probably like, I would, right, I
- 21:22Speaker 1: would say that Dak Prescott's not going to make the Hall.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Of Fame, but shit, after what happened with Stafford.
- 21:27Speaker 3: All he needs is one trade to the right guy.
- 21:30Speaker 2: That's right. Stick around long enough. He keeps getting better.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:34Speaker 2: You still have a chance, buddy.
- 21:36Speaker 1: But the bottom line is, if the worst quarterback that
- 21:39Speaker 1: Mike McCarthy ever coached was Dak Prescott.
- 21:43Speaker 2: He's been living good.
- 21:44Speaker 3: Right.
- 21:45Speaker 4: Okay?
- 21:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Who the hell is going to.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Play quarterback for the Steelers next year? Because I feel
- 21:50Speaker 1: pretty confident that that's not going to bring Aaron Rodgers back.
- 21:54Speaker 3: I mean, I can't imagine a world even if Aaron
- 21:56Speaker 3: Rodgers does come back.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Correct. That's not what you want.
- 21:59Speaker 3: Right. If that's your best option, you don't have a
- 22:02Speaker 3: lot of good options.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Yeah, so what are they doing? They hired a coach
- 22:06Speaker 1: who is in his early mid-60s, right?
- 22:09Speaker 4: He was 63, Ryan?
- 22:09Speaker 2: Turned 63 next season.
- 22:10Speaker 3: All right, he turned 63.
- 22:14Speaker 1: They're not starting over, right? They are not a, they're
- 22:16Speaker 1: not a rebuild.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Sort of team. Let me tell you something that's wild.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Up until that Minka Fitzpatrick trade where they traded away
- 22:23Speaker 1: first round pick to get him, they had a run
- 22:27Speaker 1: for decades of every year making one first round pick.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Never two, never zero. one first-round pick, right?
- 22:38Speaker 1: Like, they have operated very much so in a process
- 22:41Speaker 1: sort of thing.
- 22:42Speaker 2: They don't believe in tearing it down. I understand if
- 22:44Speaker 2: you don't believe in tearing it down, that's fine.
- 22:46Speaker 1: My question is, what the hell do you think this
- 22:47Speaker 1: team is that you have right now? And if your
- 22:50Speaker 1: goal is, or your game is, we are going to
- 22:52Speaker 1: stay competitive with the roster that we have, and then
- 22:56Speaker 1: you add Mike McCarthy, it is implying to me that
- 23:00Speaker 1: even though Mike Tomlin left of his own volition.
- 23:03Speaker 2: You kind of think he was the problem.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Right. Because, I mean, I don't... Clearly, you guys don't
- 23:09Speaker 1: mind changing what you've done in the past. Oh, what
- 23:11Speaker 1: is that small sample thing again? Because you just hired
- 23:13Speaker 1: Mike McCarthy, right? You are clearly not wedded to everything
- 23:16Speaker 1: you had done before. There have been articles that have
- 23:17Speaker 1: come out that... that are implying that the Steelers are
- 23:22Speaker 1: in a place that a lot of college programs get to.
- 23:25Speaker 1: North Carolina basketball is one I can think of around
- 23:28Speaker 1: the majority era where you look up and what you
- 23:30Speaker 1: got is a little bit stale, right? And you've always
- 23:32Speaker 1: been able to get by on whatever the name was
- 23:34Speaker 1: and all of this, da, da, da. But then you
- 23:36Speaker 1: look up and everybody else is doing all these things
- 23:38Speaker 1: and you've been so wedded to what you're doing because
- 23:40Speaker 1: everybody talks about what it is that you do.
- 23:42Speaker 2: And then you look up and it's like, oh, snap, man.
- 23:44Speaker 2: We need to get some other things going, right?
- 23:46Speaker 1: That is what has kind of been implied in reporting
- 23:49Speaker 1: that we're seeing around the Steelers right now. I just
- 23:52Speaker 1: don't see how Mike McCarthy makes anything better. And I
- 23:54Speaker 1: feel like if he ain't making it better, he's making
- 23:56Speaker 1: it worse.
- 23:57Speaker 3: To me, when you were talking about college football there,
- 23:59Speaker 3: I thought you were going to get to the point
- 24:01Speaker 3: where it seems that all politics is local. And there's
- 24:04Speaker 3: a lot of reporting going around. Part of the reason
- 24:06Speaker 3: Mike McCarthy is getting this job... Because he's from Pittsburgh?
- 24:10Speaker 3: He's from Pittsburgh. It's certainly not a factor.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Yeah, but that... What the hell? If that's what they're doing,
- 24:18Speaker 2: that can't be all it takes, right? I mean, they're
- 24:20Speaker 2: going to hire, what's his name? Dave Wanstead.
- 24:25Speaker 3: I'm sure his name's been pitched.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Look, and I know this. I was just looking at ESPN.com.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Ryan, I don't know if you've seen this, but the
- 24:32Speaker 1: headline is, Rooney to fans. Steelers, quote, excited about Mike McCarthy.
- 24:39Speaker 1: And Mike McCarthy is many things, but he's not exciting.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Even if you think he's effective, even if you think
- 24:44Speaker 1: he's the right man for the job, he is not excited.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Listen to this. We're not worried about winning the initial
- 24:52Speaker 2: press conference.
- 24:52Speaker 1: See, that's when you know. You know ain't nobody trying
- 24:55Speaker 1: to hear this shit, man. And look, courage to them. Like,
- 24:57Speaker 1: when you know you're making a call that people aren't
- 24:59Speaker 1: going to like, but you're going to do it anyway, hey,
- 25:02Speaker 1: there's a certain level of G that I suppose you
- 25:05Speaker 1: have to have in you in doing that. Just none
- 25:10Speaker 1: of us understand what, like, I feel bad for McCarthy
- 25:14Speaker 1: in the sense that he can't answer the questions.
- 25:18Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 25:19Speaker 1: Like the questions we have about this decision are not
- 25:21Speaker 1: questions that he can answer by telling us about what
- 25:23Speaker 1: the scheme is going to be or telling us what
- 25:25Speaker 1: the staff is going to be.
- 25:27Speaker 2: What? We don't understand this.
- 25:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I just, everything about this hire, we talked about
- 25:36Speaker 3: it being one of the best jobs available because you
- 25:38Speaker 3: were going to get a long runway. You were going
- 25:40Speaker 3: to be able to grow into the job because we
- 25:42Speaker 3: assumed they would hire someone from their late 30s, early 40s.
- 25:46Speaker 3: And now they've hired someone just the most retread of
- 25:52Speaker 3: all retreads.
- 25:53Speaker 6: Yes.
- 25:53Speaker 3: Like someone who's coached, again, lots of experience for probably
- 25:57Speaker 3: the two of the other grammar franchises in the NFL.
- 26:00Speaker 3: But like if you, if you pushed Mike Tomlin out,
- 26:04Speaker 3: cause he couldn't get over the hump. Right. And so
- 26:07Speaker 3: you bring in Mike McCarthy. I just don't understand the logic.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Well, here's the problem or where I think this will
- 26:12Speaker 1: be interesting is because of his age, you don't really
- 26:19Speaker 1: have the option of patience. I don't think like you
- 26:23Speaker 1: can sell patients with your 35 year old guy. And
- 26:27Speaker 1: you're like, Hey, we get, we gave him a five-year
- 26:29Speaker 1: contract and we're going to like, we've made this decision
- 26:32Speaker 1: right here and now that this is a five-year play.
- 26:35Speaker 2: And we're going to, you know, see where it goes.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Especially with the Steelers who have one of the oldest
- 26:38Speaker 3: rosters in the NFL.
- 26:39Speaker 4: Right.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Right. Like you, but you could, you could get up
- 26:42Speaker 2: there and say, Hey, look, we're going to see how
- 26:43Speaker 2: this goes. You know how we do things.
- 26:46Speaker 1: You can't do that with a guy that's 60 something
- 26:49Speaker 1: years old. Nobody's trying to hear about the time that
- 26:52Speaker 1: you're willing to give him or the time that you're
- 26:54Speaker 1: going to afford him.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Nobody wants to hear this. So I don't, I.
- 27:00Speaker 1: I wish I had an answer for what exactly it
- 27:03Speaker 1: is that they're going to do from here. Nobody, I
- 27:06Speaker 1: don't think anybody has the answer for what it is
- 27:09Speaker 1: that they are going to do. It is not exciting.
- 27:12Speaker 1: They said that, you know, the Steelers said that they're excited.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Somebody has to be. Nobody else is excited about this move. Also, Ryan,
- 27:22Speaker 1: did they look at the rest of these coaches and
- 27:24Speaker 1: just be like, it ain't really hitting?
- 27:28Speaker 4: Right.
- 27:28Speaker 2: I mean.
- 27:30Speaker 3: I would rather have Robert Sala than.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Well, yeah, that's what I'm saying. What a weird cycle
- 27:35Speaker 2: where Sala takes the Titans job.
- 27:39Speaker 3: Right.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Right.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Because here's one thing I do know that Salah is
- 27:41Speaker 1: going to do. Salah is going to bring in some
- 27:44Speaker 1: form of the Shanahan offense.
- 27:46Speaker 4: Right.
- 27:47Speaker 3: He's going to go find some one.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Of some 32 year old guy.
- 27:51Speaker 3: There's there's got there's always another Kubiak. Yes.
- 27:54Speaker 2: You know, like Chris all over the place.
- 27:56Speaker 3: Chris Kubiak or, you know, whatever.
- 27:58Speaker 2: K.R.I.S. Yeah.
- 27:58Speaker 3: Yeah. Clay Kubiak. Killer Kubiak.
- 28:03Speaker 2: Killer Kubes. Right? Like, one of them is going to
- 28:06Speaker 2: be there. You know, it's so funny. You've seen this
- 28:08Speaker 2: thing with Khan Kanipal.
- 28:09Speaker 3: Yes.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Where Khan Kanipal and all the Kanipals have names that
- 28:13Speaker 2: start with K, and the question immediately was, what's your
- 28:16Speaker 2: middle name?
- 28:16Speaker 3: Of course.
- 28:17Speaker 2: I haven't seen anybody ask this about these Kubiaks.
- 28:20Speaker 1: And I'm going to find out right now. Like, I
- 28:25Speaker 1: hope that there is a level of self-awareness about what Alexander.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Alexander Kubiak. I would go by Alex. I recall having
- 28:35Speaker 2: a teacher whose initials were a K and then a
- 28:38Speaker 2: K and then a K.
- 28:42Speaker 3: Gotta change your name. Well, now you do.
- 28:48Speaker 2: I'm not sure if then you had to, right?
- 28:50Speaker 3: I don't, I don't have that option is always available.
- 28:52Speaker 3: It's always on the.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Board, man. It's always on the board, right?
- 28:55Speaker 3: Like you get, there's lots of people change your name
- 28:58Speaker 3: every day.
- 28:59Speaker 1: There's lots of ways to change your day. You could,
- 29:01Speaker 1: you ain't even got to go Muslim. You know what
- 29:03Speaker 1: I'm saying?
- 29:04Speaker 2: You ain't even got to get it on your official paperwork,
- 29:07Speaker 2: you know.
- 29:07Speaker 1: But you guys, sometimes you, sometimes you gotta, you gotta
- 29:10Speaker 1: make an adjustment. Um, speaking of needing to make an
- 29:12Speaker 1: adjustment there, we've heard they're talking about the, uh, the
- 29:16Speaker 1: Pittsburgh Steelers. Are you also, I'm, I'm intrigued also by
- 29:20Speaker 1: these guys like McCarthy, not McCarthy, Mike McDaniel did this.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Brian Flores did this, where they jumped on the bird
- 29:26Speaker 1: in the hand of these assistant jobs. But you know,
- 29:28Speaker 1: the rule is you can't stop somebody from interviewing for
- 29:31Speaker 1: a head job.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 29:33Speaker 1: If they are an assistant coach. So McDaniel's got that
- 29:36Speaker 1: job with hardball flores apparently is staying with minnesota which
- 29:40Speaker 1: surprised me for a couple of reasons but they're also
- 29:43Speaker 1: still kind of out there interviewing for jobs now look
- 29:45Speaker 1: man i don't think nobody giving brian flores no job
- 29:47Speaker 1: still is new him yeah and they said no thank
- 29:50Speaker 1: you all right for whatever it's worth right they said
- 29:53Speaker 1: no thank you um this is a weird market I
- 29:59Speaker 1: think that's the only way.
- 30:01Speaker 3: That I can really say it. On Friday, the Bills
- 30:03Speaker 3: interviewed Phillip Rivers.
- 30:05Speaker 1: Holy shit, I forgot about that already. Guys, in case
- 30:08Speaker 1: you did not know this, this truly happened. On Friday,
- 30:12Speaker 1: the Bills interviewed Phillip Rivers. And it was so funny
- 30:14Speaker 1: because you sent me a text about it and you
- 30:17Speaker 1: had made mention of the point that also Josh Allen
- 30:19Speaker 1: was going to be sitting in on interviews. And I'm like,
- 30:21Speaker 1: I can't believe anybody cares about that right now. He's
- 30:24Speaker 1: going to sit in on an interview.
- 30:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 30:26Speaker 1: And Phillip Rivers is going to be the one that's
- 30:29Speaker 1: making the presentation. what i'm also trying to imagine philip
- 30:32Speaker 1: rivers because he's not he's not a like he's a
- 30:34Speaker 1: high school coach but he ain't been a coach like
- 30:36Speaker 1: this is he on chad gpt right now cooking up
- 30:39Speaker 1: his powerpoints and like like cranking out who the staff
- 30:43Speaker 1: is going to be whose idea was this did they
- 30:45Speaker 1: call him did he call them.
- 30:47Speaker 3: I would rather have philip rivers and mike mccarthy it's.
- 30:50Speaker 1: It's i see the point i see the argument I
- 30:55Speaker 1: don't know what's I don't know if it's.
- 30:57Speaker 3: A good that's personal preference.
- 30:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 30:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 30:59Speaker 2: But I don't know.
- 31:00Speaker 1: I don't know any of what's going on here. I
- 31:02Speaker 1: do know. I do want to say this, though, about
- 31:05Speaker 1: the Josh Allen sitting in on.
- 31:07Speaker 2: I don't see that. That didn't move me at all.
- 31:10Speaker 6: Right.
- 31:12Speaker 1: I don't I guess this is not really commonplace in
- 31:14Speaker 1: the NFL. I wonder if this also happened because Bashadi
- 31:17Speaker 1: in Baltimore, we said, Lamar, if you want to have
- 31:20Speaker 1: a say so about who the coach was.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Why don't you get on the plane with me? We
- 31:23Speaker 2: come up here and we do these interviews, right? And
- 31:26Speaker 2: maybe Josh Allen was like, huh, yeah.
- 31:29Speaker 3: They were also interviewing people in Florida, so you might
- 31:32Speaker 3: have just been avoiding Buffalo this time of year.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Could be, right? But I.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Think we all need to be honest about the level
- 31:42Speaker 1: of power that Josh Allen has with this team. And
- 31:46Speaker 1: even if he's not in the interviews, they're not hiring
- 31:50Speaker 1: a coach without Josh Allen being like, yeah, I can
- 31:53Speaker 1: see it.
- 31:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:54Speaker 4: Right?
- 31:55Speaker 2: Like, this is not.
- 31:57Speaker 1: This is not Jerry Jones hiring Barry Switzer and then
- 32:00Speaker 1: telling Troy Aikman about it, right?
- 32:01Speaker 2: Yeah. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 32:03Speaker 1: This decision was always going to involve Josh Allen in
- 32:07Speaker 1: a way prominent enough that that didn't get me. It's the, hey,
- 32:12Speaker 1: Phillip Rivers did a good job playing as an old man.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Why don't we make him a coach? I hear he's
- 32:18Speaker 2: doing a good job coaching at a private school in Alabama.
- 32:21Speaker 3: What?
- 32:23Speaker 2: What are, what are, what?
- 32:25Speaker 1: And see, and this is the thing, man. If they'll
- 32:29Speaker 1: invite him to interview, it's a good chance he'll get
- 32:32Speaker 1: the job. Because clearly they're crazy.
- 32:35Speaker 3: You do not call Philip Rivers unless you're actually considering it. Right.
- 32:40Speaker 2: Right. Somebody's like, we'll see. I tell you this. I
- 32:45Speaker 2: wish I could get.
- 32:46Speaker 1: Into group chat with a Some of the brothers in
- 32:49Speaker 1: the Fritz Pollard Alliance. I'd love to know what they
- 32:54Speaker 1: thought when the Phillip Rivers, the Phillip Rivers email came through.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Like, what are you saying? Like, it was funny when
- 33:01Speaker 2: Jeff Saturday got the job with the Colts a couple
- 33:04Speaker 2: of years ago. And I know Jeff and I like
- 33:06Speaker 2: Jeff a lot.
- 33:07Speaker 1: It was so crazy that they gave him the job
- 33:10Speaker 1: that I didn't even have time to get around to
- 33:12Speaker 1: a Rooney Rule discussion because the white boys had room
- 33:15Speaker 1: to be just as bad as everybody else. Like, everybody
- 33:18Speaker 1: was like, yo, fuck, are you serious? Like, he on
- 33:22Speaker 1: TV right now. What are you talking about?
- 33:24Speaker 3: You had to get off the first take, second set,
- 33:26Speaker 3: and get on a private plane to Indianapolis.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that's why it's actually so funny. I'm talking about
- 33:31Speaker 1: the brothers being mad about this and Phillip Rivers. Again,
- 33:33Speaker 1: the white boys is up in arms. Joe Brady's got
- 33:36Speaker 1: to be like.
- 33:36Speaker 2: He can't be.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Serious i've been up here i've been i've been up
- 33:39Speaker 1: here freezing my ass off for years years i got
- 33:43Speaker 1: the big glued under control and now you go with

- 36:57Speaker 3: All right, Bo. Speaking of coaches, a couple college coaches
- 37:00Speaker 3: got themselves in trouble over the weekend. Deion Sanders announced
- 37:05Speaker 3: he'll be fining players for following eight rule violations to school.
- 37:08Speaker 3: Late to practice, $ 500. No show practice, $ 2, 500. Late to treatment, $ 1, 000.
- 37:15Speaker 3: No show to a meeting or film session, $ 2, 000, amongst others. Bo,
- 37:20Speaker 3: what was your reaction to this?
- 37:22Speaker 2: All right, so....
- 37:25Speaker 1: Penny Hardaway apparently also came around to instituting fines at Memphis.
- 37:31Speaker 2: And that went great. Yeah, right.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Well, we're in this ambiguous situation of, is this the pros?
- 37:38Speaker 1: And the issue is this, and this is where I
- 37:42Speaker 1: imagine it drives a guy like Deion crazy. They are
- 37:46Speaker 1: being paid like professionals, but they are still teenagers, right?
- 37:49Speaker 4: Correct.
- 37:49Speaker 2: They are in that zone. They are not, even if
- 37:52Speaker 2: they're professional, they're not pros.
- 37:55Speaker 3: I mean, they're still 19.
- 37:56Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. They're not pros.
- 37:59Speaker 1: They're not going to comport themselves as pros. And Deion
- 38:03Speaker 1: sees himself as running a pro program. Did you see
- 38:06Speaker 1: the clip talking about him and recruiting cornerbacks? And he's like,
- 38:11Speaker 1: he doesn't recruit 5'11 cornerbacks because he doesn't see 5'11
- 38:14Speaker 1: cornerbacks playing in the NFL. And that would matter a
- 38:17Speaker 1: lot if he was recruiting for an NFL team, right?
- 38:19Speaker 2: But they're not. Or if he was, you know, at Alabama. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like,
- 38:23Speaker 2: you don't. I don't think that he has that luxury.
- 38:26Speaker 1: And even if your game plan is, I'm building an
- 38:29Speaker 1: NFL-style program, yeah, but you can't afford to make those
- 38:34Speaker 1: kinds of decisions. And maybe this is the kind of
- 38:36Speaker 1: thing that happens when you're in the NFL.
- 38:39Speaker 2: I have two questions. Question number one, if they don't pay,
- 38:46Speaker 2: then what?
- 38:49Speaker 3: Right?
- 38:50Speaker 2: Question number two, where's the money going?
- 38:55Speaker 1: Because normally when you got these kind of fines and
- 38:57Speaker 1: stuff like this, it's like kangaroo court type of stuff, right?
- 39:00Speaker 2: Like you put it in a pot.
- 39:01Speaker 3: Like a swear jar for a company party or something.
- 39:04Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, no, but you like put it in a
- 39:05Speaker 1: pot and then you like throw a party at the
- 39:06Speaker 1: end of the year or something like that with the
- 39:09Speaker 1: money that people put into this.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Man, he's got $ 2, 500.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Fines in here, $ 2, 000 fines.
- 39:15Speaker 2: And look, man, these are kids. I don't care how
- 39:18Speaker 2: much money you paying them. Some of them is broke.
- 39:21Speaker 2: Right now.
- 39:23Speaker 1: And you're like, well, I guess you can't afford to
- 39:25Speaker 1: uh be late to practice well then they late to
- 39:27Speaker 1: practice dion what you about to do right what what
- 39:31Speaker 1: what are you.
- 39:31Speaker 2: I don't know i can't i don't.
- 39:37Speaker 1: I get where he's coming from i guess is the
- 39:39Speaker 1: part that i get the logic yeah yeah i don't
- 39:41Speaker 1: want to pretend like i don't really understand it and
- 39:45Speaker 1: What I don't have a great handle on is what
- 39:47Speaker 1: kind of money the guys at the end of the
- 39:49Speaker 1: roster are making on this team. You know, Colorado's not
- 39:53Speaker 1: a school that has a whole lot of money to
- 39:55Speaker 1: give guys, you know, like their five-star left tackle they
- 39:58Speaker 1: recruited a couple of years ago is leaving.
- 40:00Speaker 2: And I'm sure it's because Colorado just doesn't have the
- 40:01Speaker 2: money to keep them.
- 40:04Speaker 1: But I just don't, I don't think this is going
- 40:07Speaker 1: to go the way that he thinks it's going to go.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Or this leads me to another question. Do you have
- 40:12Speaker 1: this much of a problem with getting guys to come
- 40:14Speaker 1: to stuff? Like, have these guys been skipping out on you?
- 40:18Speaker 1: Have they not been showing up to treatment? Like, is
- 40:20Speaker 1: this something that's been going on that we don't know about?
- 40:22Speaker 1: Because I feel like you should be able to take
- 40:25Speaker 1: care of this with old-fashioned steps.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Like, steps. Gassers. You know what I'm saying? Vicious workouts
- 40:35Speaker 2: in the heat.
- 40:35Speaker 3: Get out and run that stadium.
- 40:37Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Like, when did that stuff stop working? And now you
- 40:41Speaker 2: got to get them to pay.
- 40:42Speaker 1: $ 2, 500.
- 40:42Speaker 2: I don't know anyone.
- 40:46Speaker 3: No matter how much money they have, who wants to
- 40:48Speaker 3: give up $ 2, 500?
- 40:48Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 40:50Speaker 3: Nobody.
- 40:51Speaker 1: I just don't. I can't believe that he thinks it
- 40:55Speaker 1: needed to come to this.
- 40:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 40:57Speaker 1: That, to me, does not speak well of your capacity
- 41:01Speaker 1: as a leader if you have to kind of sort
- 41:04Speaker 1: of bribe them to do what they're supposed to do
- 41:06Speaker 1: at this point in their lives. But also, I've never
- 41:10Speaker 1: had to try to tell a rich 18-year-old what to do.
- 41:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I do not want to be the disciplinarian for
- 41:16Speaker 3: a bunch of- Look, man. Millionaire 18-year-olds either.
- 41:19Speaker 1: This is the problem with this whole new setup. And
- 41:22Speaker 1: I don't know how many people are going to say
- 41:23Speaker 1: it out loud, but I'll be the one to say it.
- 41:25Speaker 1: Nobody likes rich teenagers. Nobody does. Not a soul likes
- 41:33Speaker 1: a teenager with more money than them. And that's all
- 41:36Speaker 1: these little people are. is 85 of, for most people,
- 41:42Speaker 1: it's 85 of them, right? Like, Joel tells a story,
- 41:47Speaker 1: and he's told this in public, so I have no
- 41:48Speaker 1: problem repeating it. When he was covering preps, he did,
- 41:53Speaker 1: he was in Dallas, and he did something where he
- 41:54Speaker 1: interviewed Chris Bosh. And after they got done with the interview,
- 41:59Speaker 1: they walk out to the parking lot, and Chris Bosh
- 42:02Speaker 1: got into an Explorer.
- 42:03Speaker 2: I think it was a new Explorer.
- 42:05Speaker 1: And I don't remember what kind of car Joel was driving,
- 42:08Speaker 1: but all you need to know is that after watching
- 42:11Speaker 1: Chris Bosh get in his Explorer and Joel get in
- 42:15Speaker 1: his Hatermobile, he immediately went to go purchase a new
- 42:21Speaker 1: car because he could not be stunted on by the
- 42:23Speaker 1: 17-year-old in this manner.
- 42:28Speaker 3: I can imagine what Joel was making as a prep.
- 42:31Speaker 3: As a preps reporter. Preps newspaper. In 2001.
- 42:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:34Speaker 3: And all I'm saying is this.
- 42:40Speaker 2: All of these kids is doing that to just about
- 42:42Speaker 2: all of us. And when I mean us, I mean y'all.
- 42:44Speaker 2: But this is kind of what it is.
- 42:47Speaker 3: All right. Speaking of college coaches, Lane Kiffin got himself
- 42:50Speaker 3: in trouble tweeting out a picture of two Make Baton
- 42:53Speaker 3: Rouge Great hats and then tagging the president. Bo, Lane Kiffin,
- 42:59Speaker 3: are you surprised?
- 42:59Speaker 2: That's your guy. It's your guy. And the thing with
- 43:03Speaker 2: Lane is I.
- 43:06Speaker 1: Have a hard time believing that Lane– believes in Trump
- 43:11Speaker 1: because I have a hard time believing Layne believes in anything.
- 43:14Speaker 1: Like I can't, he's all, everything with him is so
- 43:16Speaker 1: random and he's such.
- 43:17Speaker 2: A troll that who knows, right?
- 43:21Speaker 4: It doesn't.
- 43:23Speaker 1: In some ways, it doesn't matter if he believes this
- 43:25Speaker 1: or not, okay? Read the room, man. Are you watching
- 43:28Speaker 1: TV right now? Like, are you people... Come on, man.
- 43:32Speaker 1: You can't be doing this. Like, this is not.
- 43:34Speaker 2: I don't know. This doesn't seem worth the squeeze. And
- 43:37Speaker 2: he deleted it, and then he... He deleted it?
- 43:40Speaker 1: He sent it out because it was linked to Trump's
- 43:42Speaker 1: official account, and then he deleted that and then sent
- 43:45Speaker 1: it back out without a link to Trump.
- 43:47Speaker 5: Correct.
- 43:48Speaker 2: Right. And look, for all we.
- 43:50Speaker 1: Know, he just came across these hats on the street.
- 43:53Speaker 1: Somebody was selling them. I have no idea. My thing is,
- 43:56Speaker 1: if I was one of them LSU people, what my
- 43:59Speaker 1: problem with him would be was The hat didn't say
- 44:01Speaker 1: make Baton Rouge great again. It just said make Baton
- 44:04Speaker 1: Rouge great, to which I respond, what you trying to say, bro?
- 44:07Speaker 2: You just got here. You know what I'm saying?
- 44:09Speaker 1: And I'll tell you, I had one of the best
- 44:11Speaker 1: weekends of my life in Baton Rouge on a whole $ 20.
- 44:14Speaker 1: I know people have their criticisms of it, but you
- 44:17Speaker 1: do Baton Rouge right.
- 44:18Speaker 2: You can have a really good time. Please note, though,
- 44:21Speaker 2: I was 20.
- 44:22Speaker 3: I also had a great time in that room when
- 44:24Speaker 3: I was 20 years old.
- 44:26Speaker 2: He said, make it great, but not even great again.
- 44:29Speaker 2: He's like, yo, y'all need to step y'all shit up.
- 44:32Speaker 2: That's what he said.
- 44:33Speaker 1: And I just don't feel like you can walk in
- 44:34Speaker 1: the door talking like that.
- 44:37Speaker 3: Lane Kiffin living by the tweet and dying by the
- 44:39Speaker 3: tweet will end exactly how we think it will.
- 44:42Speaker 1: Look, man, you guys went from one kind of impossible
- 44:46Speaker 1: to like coach to a different archetype of impossible to
- 44:51Speaker 1: like coach. but still suffering from the same broad affliction.
- 44:56Speaker 3: All right, and a little bit more serious news. ICE
- 45:00Speaker 3: has killed another protester in Minneapolis. Protests have gone on
- 45:07Speaker 3: throughout the weekend. An NBA game was postponed. Bo, what
- 45:10Speaker 3: were your thoughts on the situation? Um.
- 45:13Speaker 1: So I'm not in the habit of watching people get shot.
- 45:17Speaker 1: I've opted out of that. Enough people have described to
- 45:20Speaker 1: me what happened in that video that I don't know
- 45:24Speaker 1: if I have anything novel or of particular interest to
- 45:28Speaker 1: say about it. It is noteworthy how flagrant these actions
- 45:34Speaker 1: have become.
- 45:35Speaker 2: I think brazen is probably the word.
- 45:38Speaker 1: The cockamamie explanations that come on the back end The
- 45:41Speaker 1: fact that these acts happened in the first place, full-on
- 45:44Speaker 1: awareness that when they're going on, there's cameras there. And
- 45:46Speaker 1: so it makes you feel like they're not even doing
- 45:49Speaker 1: this on the standpoint of, I hope nobody sees it.
- 45:53Speaker 1: You got to feel like they want somebody to see
- 45:54Speaker 1: it at this point. I don't know if it's we're
- 45:58Speaker 1: sending a message, whatever it is.
- 46:00Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 46:01Speaker 1: What I thought about in seeing this, and Ryan and
- 46:06Speaker 1: I kind of bouncing ideas off each other over the weekend,
- 46:11Speaker 1: And right before we got on to do this, we
- 46:14Speaker 1: both saw that the National Basketball Players Association had sent
- 46:20Speaker 1: a tweet and a statement via a tweet. And it says,
- 46:25Speaker 1: following the news of yet another fatal shooting in Minneapolis,
- 46:27Speaker 1: a city that has been on the forefront of the
- 46:29Speaker 1: fight against injustices, NBA players can no longer remain silent. Now,
- 46:33Speaker 1: more than ever, we must defend the right of freedom
- 46:35Speaker 1: of speech and stand in solidarity with the people in
- 46:38Speaker 1: Minnesota protesting and risking their lives to demand justice. The
- 46:41Speaker 1: fraternity of NBA players, like the United States itself, is
- 46:44Speaker 1: a community enriched by its global citizens, and we refuse
- 46:47Speaker 1: to let the flames of division threaten the civil liberties
- 46:49Speaker 1: that are meant to protect us all. The NBPA and
- 46:52Speaker 1: its members extend our deepest condolences to the families of
- 46:55Speaker 1: Alex Pretty and Renee Good, just as our thoughts remain
- 46:58Speaker 1: focused on the safety and well-being of.
- 47:00Speaker 2: All members of our community.
- 47:05Speaker 1: Ryan, let me know if I'm off here in a way,
- 47:08Speaker 1: but I feel like I was personally glad to see
- 47:13Speaker 1: that the NBPA made a statement, but kind of felt
- 47:19Speaker 1: like word salad.
- 47:21Speaker 3: It is not the tenor that these statements used to be.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Well, I'll put it to you like this. The line
- 47:28Speaker 1: that NBA players can no longer remain silent. I'm just,
- 47:35Speaker 1: this is just me giving us some game here. That
- 47:38Speaker 1: statement doesn't make noise.
- 47:41Speaker 2: You understand what I'm saying? Like it might not be silent, right?
- 47:45Speaker 2: Like you may have said something, but it doesn't make noise.
- 47:49Speaker 1: Putting actual voice and actual names to things is what
- 47:53Speaker 1: makes noise.
- 47:54Speaker 2: Now, who knows?
- 47:55Speaker 1: Things may change in between the time that I have
- 47:57Speaker 1: recorded this and the time you see this, right? There
- 47:59Speaker 1: may be some campaign and people doing all the stuff
- 48:02Speaker 1: on the internet and putting out their pictures and statements
- 48:05Speaker 1: individually as players or whatever it is. But I know
- 48:08Speaker 1: 14 years ago, Almost 14 years ago, exactly. Trayvon Martin
- 48:12Speaker 1: was killed. I think that was on February 26, 2012.
- 48:15Speaker 1: We saw what to me felt like one of the
- 48:17Speaker 1: most moving and captivating things that we had seen from
- 48:19Speaker 1: athletes in my lifetime is when the Heat put out
- 48:21Speaker 1: that picture with them with the hoodies up. It was
- 48:24Speaker 1: a bold statement in that moment of solidarity with the people,
- 48:30Speaker 1: capital T, capital P.
- 48:31Speaker 2: The people.
- 48:33Speaker 1: We saw a continuation really from years into the Mike
- 48:37Speaker 1: Brown situation in Ferguson. And it really goes all the
- 48:40Speaker 1: way through 2020 with George Floyd, where there was a
- 48:43Speaker 1: very visible face. I mean, obviously Colin Kaepernick in between there.
- 48:47Speaker 2: My bad. Almost missed that one.
- 48:50Speaker 1: The players, their faces and their voices were very clear
- 48:56Speaker 1: and resonant when these things were happening in the world.
- 49:00Speaker 2: The first term of the Trump administration.
- 49:03Speaker 1: You saw and heard a lot from players kind of
- 49:06Speaker 1: pushing back about on what was going on there.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Now, for what it's worth, these times are different.
- 49:12Speaker 1: I've gotten on here and talked about how it doesn't
- 49:13Speaker 1: feel nearly as safe to say what it is that
- 49:17Speaker 1: you believe or you feel, like when that Kimmel thing
- 49:19Speaker 1: happened with Trump or whatever. it doesn't feel as easy
- 49:21Speaker 1: as it used to be to talk about these things.
- 49:24Speaker 1: But it is, to me, quite noteworthy that the tenor
- 49:27Speaker 1: and the sound of athletes is much different than it
- 49:31Speaker 1: was before. But the truth is, that is not something
- 49:35Speaker 1: I blame them for. The tenor of the athlete is
- 49:38Speaker 1: different because the tenor of the people is different. The
- 49:41Speaker 1: tenor of the times is different. And I have long
- 49:44Speaker 1: felt that many have, in times like these, looked to
- 49:49Speaker 1: athletes and felt as though athletes had a responsibility to
- 49:52Speaker 1: speak so that they could be heard because people would
- 49:54Speaker 1: listen to them in times where they would not listen
- 49:57Speaker 1: to other people. But the truth is, the behavior of
- 50:00Speaker 1: athletes in these times has actually typically been reactive and
- 50:04Speaker 1: reflective of the larger society rather than at the vanguard
- 50:09Speaker 1: of that society. And that's not to say that there
- 50:14Speaker 1: are not people who are speaking up against what is
- 50:17Speaker 1: going on now with ice, but the noise doesn't feel
- 50:23Speaker 1: the same. Um, with all that said though, I guess
- 50:27Speaker 1: I am a little surprised that it ain't like one
- 50:29Speaker 1: or two people to somebody that's just super duper loud.
- 50:34Speaker 2: Um, about what this is.
- 50:35Speaker 1: It feels like there was years and years and work
- 50:39Speaker 1: and effort to just change the tenor of conversation in
- 50:44Speaker 1: sport that discussed the larger world. When I worked at ESPN,
- 50:52Speaker 1: and I worked at ESPN in various capacities, really for
- 50:56Speaker 1: about 20 years, I never once had anybody encouraged me
- 51:04Speaker 1: not to talk about something. Even the thing I had
- 51:07Speaker 1: happen with that t-shirt that one time, I had some
- 51:10Speaker 1: shit to say when I wasn't around, but nobody ever
- 51:12Speaker 1: said anything to me.
- 51:15Speaker 2: Really, you know, like I never.
- 51:18Speaker 1: Like this idea that they would just go come and
- 51:20Speaker 1: shut everybody down. That was something I never felt when
- 51:23Speaker 1: I was there. And I generally felt like as long
- 51:25Speaker 1: as I was saying what I was saying was true
- 51:26Speaker 1: and I could support it with some evidentiary basis that
- 51:29Speaker 1: I will ultimately wind up being okay. Um, After we
- 51:32Speaker 1: got into the Trump administration, Kaepernick took a knee in 2016,
- 51:36Speaker 1: 2017 is when it kind of hit the fan because
- 51:39Speaker 1: Trump called them boys, sons of bitches, and everything went
- 51:41Speaker 1: kind of haywire. We didn't talk as much about the
- 51:45Speaker 1: things that were happening in the world, but I also
- 51:48Speaker 1: felt like the discussion in the larger news zeitgeist was
- 51:54Speaker 1: not there.
- 51:54Speaker 2: I felt like if the.
- 51:56Speaker 1: Topics of the world moved back into those places... then
- 52:00Speaker 1: the discussion in and around sport would also move to
- 52:04Speaker 1: around those places in part because the athletes would talk
- 52:07Speaker 1: about them and then we would wind up going there.
- 52:12Speaker 2: And that hasn't happened. Like the world's on fire, right?
- 52:16Speaker 2: I think we all generally agree with that. The world
- 52:19Speaker 2: is on fire, okay?
- 52:22Speaker 3: And it seems to be getting worse and not better.
- 52:24Speaker 1: Right, and we've done a full year of Trump's return
- 52:26Speaker 1: and it's come with a whole lot of stuff, right?
- 52:30Speaker 1: Do you feel like you've heard the voice of the
- 52:31Speaker 1: athlete in this? Because I do not.
- 52:34Speaker 2: I just don't.
- 52:35Speaker 1: And look, they got their reasons. I'm not as loud
- 52:37Speaker 1: about a lot of these things as I used to be.
- 52:40Speaker 1: For me, it is in large part because I have
- 52:42Speaker 1: gotten older and I felt like the means and mechanisms
- 52:46Speaker 1: that I use to talk about things, largely social media
- 52:49Speaker 1: stopped being effective. Like I gave up on the entirety
- 52:53Speaker 1: of that experiment as a way to say serious things, right?
- 52:57Speaker 2: I can do.
- 52:57Speaker 1: More or I'm inclined to do more now with this
- 53:00Speaker 1: show and this point and these times. Like I'm rounding
- 53:03Speaker 1: into a different kind of shape about these things because
- 53:05Speaker 1: I now, it's coming up to one of the few
- 53:07Speaker 1: times where I didn't feel for a long time like
- 53:09Speaker 1: there was much that I needed to say that wasn't obvious, right?
- 53:13Speaker 1: It was all so transparent. So like, why am I there?
- 53:15Speaker 1: Young people though, they typically operate in a different space.
- 53:17Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 53:18Speaker 1: They tend to be a little bit more gangster wild
- 53:20Speaker 1: with what they do and they just feel the need
- 53:22Speaker 1: to be heard. And it don't feel like any of
- 53:24Speaker 1: them really feel the need.
- 53:26Speaker 2: To be heard right now.
- 53:28Speaker 1: Like LeBron got in trouble, not really trouble, but he
- 53:32Speaker 1: did something incredibly stupid in tone deaf. And I've mentioned
- 53:34Speaker 1: it kind of vaguely the other day on the show,
- 53:37Speaker 1: but his people, him and Nike put out a shoe
- 53:42Speaker 1: in honor of Martin Luther King. That's kind of like this,
- 53:45Speaker 1: like motel green, like sixties motel green, like the Lorraine
- 53:51Speaker 1: motel green. which is to say that they thought the
- 53:54Speaker 1: way to honor Martin Luther King was a shoe that
- 53:56Speaker 1: was inspired by the hotel that he got shot at.
- 54:00Speaker 2: They thought that.
- 54:01Speaker 1: Some James Eyre rays were the way to pay tribute
- 54:04Speaker 1: to Martin Luther King, which is ridiculous, right?
- 54:09Speaker 2: There's a zillion people that you can blame for this. Fine.
- 54:13Speaker 2: What I would stop and make note of is that
- 54:17Speaker 2: if you want to honor Martin Luther King, by trying
- 54:21Speaker 2: to find a way to sell us a colorway, I'd.
- 54:27Speaker 1: Kind of like to know what you think about this stuff, right?
- 54:31Speaker 1: And the reason I would say that about him is
- 54:33Speaker 1: because we've seen him do it before. We've seen him
- 54:37Speaker 1: be at the forefront of these things, right? And in 2020,
- 54:43Speaker 1: remember when he was in the bubble with like the
- 54:45Speaker 1: leader to society shirt and all of that, right? I'm
- 54:48Speaker 1: not saying this in an accusatory fashion. I'm very curious
- 54:51Speaker 1: as to why we hear less from him now.
- 54:53Speaker 2: Like, I would love to know.
- 54:55Speaker 1: And look, this isn't just about the NBA players because
- 54:57Speaker 1: it's unfair. Like, hey, man, these white folks out here
- 54:59Speaker 1: getting smoked in the streets, right?
- 55:01Speaker 2: Like, this isn't necessarily... And I.
- 55:04Speaker 1: Think it's somewhat telling that it's white people getting smoked
- 55:06Speaker 1: in the streets and it's still the basketball players that
- 55:08Speaker 1: are ones that are standing up and putting out the
- 55:10Speaker 1: statement as much as that is standing up, right?
- 55:13Speaker 2: I want to know from a whole lot of these guys, right?
- 55:15Speaker 2: White people.
- 55:16Speaker 1: typically get to slack and they don't have to answer
- 55:18Speaker 1: for what's going on with the world and all of
- 55:20Speaker 1: this stuff, right? So I don't want to reinforce the
- 55:22Speaker 1: idea that this is a black responsibility, but people who
- 55:26Speaker 1: I heard truly not that long ago be vocal and visible,
- 55:33Speaker 1: I would love to know why they aren't right now.
- 55:37Speaker 1: Are we simply as a society exhausted? Did COVID and
- 55:43Speaker 1: George Floyd really get the last out of us in
- 55:48Speaker 1: terms of a certain sort of collective action when it
- 55:51Speaker 1: comes to these things?
- 55:57Speaker 2: But it's different.
- 55:59Speaker 1: And I think that all of us could stand to
- 56:01Speaker 1: ask ourselves why it's different. And not just for them,
- 56:05Speaker 1: but in some ways, why is it different from us?
- 56:08Speaker 1: One point somebody made to me that I thought was good,
- 56:10Speaker 1: my man Jason, is just kind of, as social media
- 56:14Speaker 1: has turned into something so ultimately useless and unproductive, and
- 56:21Speaker 1: as the tenor of it got to be so toxic
- 56:23Speaker 1: and so argumentative, I think it's probably more difficult to
- 56:29Speaker 1: organize around social media. It's probably more difficult to build
- 56:34Speaker 1: a community around the issue that you were talking about.
- 56:36Speaker 1: It just kind of becomes a place to scream and
- 56:39Speaker 1: for people to scream at each other And if you
- 56:42Speaker 1: have a generation that has been raised on social media
- 56:46Speaker 1: and that's the means through which they communicate. I could
- 56:50Speaker 1: see why they would be burnout from talking about any
- 56:53Speaker 1: of this, because I know how burnout I have felt.
- 56:57Speaker 2: At different points. But things have changed in a way.
- 57:02Speaker 1: That I think is bad, and I think that maybe
- 57:04Speaker 1: we should ask ourselves how to change it the other way.
- 57:12Speaker 3: All right, Bo, let's get to some voicemails.
- 57:14Speaker 2: Speaking of changing.
- 57:15Speaker 3: Speaking of change.
- 57:16Speaker 2: Way to go, wipe. Way to go.
- 57:19Speaker 3: Let's hear from a good friend of the show.
- 57:22Speaker 4: I'd like to ask this question. Come on, y'all. The
- 57:26Speaker 4: Big Ten is taking over the network. Michigan won a championship.
- 57:30Speaker 4: Ohio State won a championship. Indiana won a championship. Three
- 57:35Speaker 4: in a row. That's three repeats. The Big Ten won
- 57:37Speaker 4: the championship. Come on, recruiter. Come on, my booster. We
- 57:41Speaker 4: getting out pimped. We from Alabama. We got the gold
- 57:45Speaker 4: in our mouth and the green.
- 57:46Speaker 6: Is for the money, gold is for the honey. There's
- 57:50Speaker 6: no way we should have a small town like Indiana.
- 57:55Speaker 4: All they got is cornfield. We got deer. We got cows.
- 57:59Speaker 4: We got everything you want.
- 58:01Speaker 6: And we ain't winning nothing. Come on, Texas. Step your
- 58:05Speaker 6: game up. You got Jerry Jones. You got all the
- 58:07Speaker 6: biggest pimp boosters in there.
- 58:09Speaker 4: You got 85-year-old, 90-year-old boosters. And we all ain't winning
- 58:13Speaker 4: no championships. Something's wrong, man. And we got to start
- 58:16Speaker 4: spending our money.
- 58:17Speaker 6: If we let this happen, everybody going to go to
- 58:20Speaker 6: the port of Indiana, Ohio State.
- 58:23Speaker 4: And we got to get back Alabama, Texas. We got
- 58:25Speaker 4: to step our game up. Pimping is not good. And
- 58:28Speaker 4: we let these small cities take over our networks. Not
- 58:34Speaker 4: the Big 10. The Big 10 is not a good network. Alabama,
- 58:38Speaker 4: we got to get those boosters back up. We got
- 58:40Speaker 4: to get back. We got to go find these old,
- 58:42Speaker 4: old grandfathers with the money and start pumping these guys again. Texas,
- 58:47Speaker 4: them Longhorns, you got to raise your hand, man. Y'all
- 58:49Speaker 4: getting too soaked down there.
- 58:50Speaker 6: Y'all got a commercial with a damn cow running down
- 58:53Speaker 6: the street.
- 58:54Speaker 4: Start recruiting these boys again. All right? This is Westside Mike.
- 58:58Speaker 4: They call me DJ Mike. Can't let them tell you something.
- 59:01Speaker 4: Alabama will win the national championship because I'm going to
- 59:04Speaker 4: come beat back a booster. We're going to start pimping
- 59:06Speaker 4: these boys again. Have a good day.
- 59:10Speaker 2: Okay, we're not going to pimp them. I just want
- 59:14Speaker 2: to throw that part out there. I will say this.
- 59:16Speaker 3: The show does not endorse this.
- 59:19Speaker 1: I mean, they was pimping it back in the day though.
- 59:21Speaker 1: So I guess, you know, when Alabama was winning, that's
- 59:24Speaker 1: what it was. We have not talked about Indiana winning
- 59:27Speaker 1: the championship since Indiana won the championship.
- 59:29Speaker 2: It is insane that Indiana won a national championship at football.
- 59:33Speaker 1: Like every, every football program, they should have been a
- 59:38Speaker 1: team meeting the next day.
- 59:40Speaker 2: Right?
- 59:41Speaker 1: And I don't know who's calling the meeting, but somebody
- 59:44Speaker 1: needed to get cussed out in that moment. I told you,
- 59:47Speaker 1: Wake Forest won the ACC in 2006.
- 59:50Speaker 2: Everybody got fired in the next two years. No excuses.
- 59:53Speaker 1: Nobody had any excuses left. They got a 64-year-old coach
- 59:58Speaker 1: up there. And they went and won a national championship.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: On the other team home field. That happened. That happened.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: The SEC, boy, all that SEC talk, it just, it's not,
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: I can't believe the big, I just can't believe any
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: of it. Because I still think the SEC is better
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: than the Big Ten. I think the Big Ten has
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: had the best team in the country three years.
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: In a row.
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: Right. And they won it wire to wire. Like, didn't
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: get hot, didn't get lucky. We're the best team in
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: the country from Labor Day till mid-January. Well, hold up.
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: Don't forget this.
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: They got smoked in the playoff by Notre Dame last year.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: And so we're just like, okay, there's a ceiling on this.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: It was a cute story. And then they went to
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: Oregon for the regular season game and won that game
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: by like 10 points on the road.
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: Then came back and beat them again in the playoff.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: Like they went and took a step. This wasn't a,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: like last year was kind of, oh, this is cute.
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: They was like, okay, now we about to win.
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: Beat Ohio State.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: Beat Ohio State. Neutral site. I mean, neutral-ish, but.
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: Man, there are a lot of Ohio State fans in Indianapolis, too.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: Everywhere. They're everywhere. They are unavoidable.
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: All right, here's our next one.
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: First off, Bo, the Knicks are not winning the East, okay?
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: The Pistons are going to get rid of them in five.
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: But to my question, in the NBA, who is the
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: Josh Allen of the NBA?
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: Meaning no matter how many times they choke, fall apart,
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: the media always makes an excuse. My answer is going
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: to always be the most overrated point guard in the NBA,
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: which is Chris Paul, because all he has done is
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: get hurt and lose to Steph Curry. So I just
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: want to know from you, who is the Josh Allen
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: of the NBA? It could be currently or of all time.
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: Love the show, man.
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: I mean, I got to be honest, I don't really
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: feel like people make that many excuses for Chris Paul. Like,
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: I see a great deal of celebrating when things don't
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: go well for Chris Paul. I think the Josh Allen
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: of the NBA has to be a current player. I
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: had a historical one.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: Okay, so I have a current one that bears a
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: lot of Josh Allen similarities as it relates to how
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: people respond to when he doesn't do what he's supposed
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: to do or the way they react to some of
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: his shortcomings.
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: And I bet you can guess who it is.
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: I'm really blanking on it, Carl.
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: So I'll give you another hint.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: You know, there's some reasons in part why people root
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: so hard for Josh Allen vis-a-vis some of his peers.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: Who has borne some of that characteristic in the NBA?
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: I say Luka Doncic.
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: Oh, there we go.
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: Luka. Hey, man. I saw somebody put on the internet
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: about Luka not playing defense.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: Did you know Luka don't play defense? So you got
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: to put people around him that do. And that J.J.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: Aska-Luka-to-play defense is just too much.
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: I was going pre-2011 Dirk.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: Ooh, see, I think, I don't know, maybe I was
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: just in different rooms.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: When Dirk, when they lost that series in 07, and
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: then in 08 he let David West tap him on
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: the jaw, we was over here killing Dirk.
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: Killing Dirk. I guess the soft European thing didn't make him.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: One of us, if you know. Yeah, he was getting killed.
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: That was the thing. Dirk changed the whole game for
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: all the Europeans by winning that one, right? Pau Gasol,
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: that was cool, but we still thought you was soft.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Dirk came out there and
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: did that that year.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: Nobody's one ring changed everything, quite like Dirk's one ring
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: changed everything.
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: All right, here's our last one.
- 1:03:51Speaker 5: Hey, Bo.
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: This is Matt in OC, and I was listening to
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: the White Reggie calls, and that reminded me, I spent
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: some time in Northeast Alabama, and it's the only place
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: I ever ran into this situation. What about White Jalens?
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: Because they were a mess of them in North Alabama.
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: Never heard of it before, never heard of it since. But, yeah,
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: White Jalens. Love the show. Listen soon. Bye.
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: Now, the question you need to ask yourself, my brother,
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: is are you sure they're white? Like, for example, you
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: ever seen John Kitten's son?
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: I've not seen Little Kitten. I hope, again, to call
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: back to earlier conversation, I hope he has a J name,
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: not a K name.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: Well, he has a J name, and he's a Jaden,
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: or a Jalen, one of the two. I can't remember which,
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: but First of all, if you Google him, the news
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: stories are going to be tricky.
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: But just look at a picture of him, okay? I
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: thought that he was white Jalen. It's Jalen, right?
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: Yes, Jalen.
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: I thought he was white Jalen, and then I saw
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: a picture of his mom. Plot twist. No, he was
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: not white Jalen. He was just quite light Jalen.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: What I think may be happening in these cases with
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: these white Jalens, In North Alabama, I would assume that
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: there is a Y in there because when a white
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: mama is involved, the Jalen takes on some permutations that
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: normally involve there being a Y, especially in like the
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: last syllable, like J-A-L-Y-N.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: You understand what I'm saying?
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: J-A-Y-L-Y-N or Jaden, J-A-D-Y-N. I don't know why. The white
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: woman who may have like a slanty haircut and some
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: big old bangles, you know what I'm saying? That's what
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: she tended to wind up doing that with the name.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: So as it relates to White Jalen, we don't know
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: how white the White Jalen actually is. And number two,
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: once again, shout out to Jalen Rose's mama. She cooked
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: with that one. She really did change the world with
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: the name she gave her son. Well, ladies and gentlemen,
