- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcomeing to JAG xam.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I'm kind Annie Stephens, Brian Sexton, and John Osier are
- 0:20Speaker 2: with me today.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Is we get ready for okas next week.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Rookie Mini camp is behind us, and we didn't learn
- 0:26Speaker 2: this whole lot, but it is always nice to have
- 0:28Speaker 2: people back in the building and get ready for things
- 0:30Speaker 2: to get going this season. Our first big thing today
- 0:32Speaker 2: is pro football one oh one, A little bit of
- 0:34Speaker 2: a teaching thing here today as the rookies came to
- 0:37Speaker 2: the building for the first time last week and got
- 0:40Speaker 2: to try to figure out exactly how this whole pro
- 0:42Speaker 2: thing goes.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Now they're with an NFL club, you know. Right now
- 0:47Speaker 3: they're we're just rookies. And so come Monday, when everybody
- 0:50Speaker 3: starts walking in here, you know, and they start seeing
- 0:53Speaker 3: all the guys, you know, it makes an impact on them.
- 0:56Speaker 3: And you know, there are a lot of these guys,
- 0:59Speaker 3: you know, I see they were they were starters in
- 1:01Speaker 3: college and now they're gonna they're gonna have to take
- 1:03Speaker 3: backup roles and they're going to compete for for starting
- 1:06Speaker 3: positions or at least compete for that backup spot and
- 1:10Speaker 3: and it and it changes just a little bit for
- 1:12Speaker 3: them So this weekend, though, from the meetings to the
- 1:16Speaker 3: on the field stuff, is really going to prepare them
- 1:18Speaker 3: for the next you know, five weeks. I guess that
- 1:21Speaker 3: we're here, Brian.
- 1:23Speaker 2: We talked a little bit about this last week. Obviously,
- 1:26Speaker 2: they played big time football. These are high level players
- 1:29Speaker 2: in college, but getting to the NFL is a little
- 1:31Speaker 2: bit different.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, last weekend, Kay, the process took center stage.
- 1:35Speaker 4: You know, where you meet, where you eat, where you
- 1:38Speaker 4: walk to get to the locker room, all of that stuff.
- 1:41Speaker 4: This week is they get onto the field, even though
- 1:42Speaker 4: they're not competing yet, it's about the pros and they're
- 1:45Speaker 4: going to see big, strong and fast. They're going to
- 1:49Speaker 4: see a different level of competition because these are grown
- 1:52Speaker 4: men and they are highly paid and this is about
- 1:56Speaker 4: their livelihood. So that's an interesting transition year to year
- 2:00Speaker 4: from the college kids who were celebrated, who were seen
- 2:03Speaker 4: as the big men on campus, and then they put
- 2:05Speaker 4: their feet here and have to figure it all out.
- 2:07Speaker 5: John, Yeah, I laughed. I saw a story over the
- 2:09Speaker 5: weekend that said some Jaguars rookie was bawling out at
- 2:15Speaker 5: the rookie ging, and I wondered how because there was
- 2:20Speaker 5: no one on ones and there was no seven on seven,
- 2:22Speaker 5: so I guess they were balling out running routes. And
- 2:25Speaker 5: I mean, if you have to write the stories, I'm
- 2:26Speaker 5: not necessarily criticiding the story. But there's a misconception about
- 2:30Speaker 5: what rookie Uni caamp Is Doug said it best. They
- 2:34Speaker 5: were trying to get the rookies to the point where
- 2:37Speaker 5: yesterday when the veterans got here and the rookies walked in,
- 2:40Speaker 5: that the rookies weren't eight steps behind and slowing things down,
- 2:43Speaker 5: and they wanted to give them a chance to compete.
- 2:45Speaker 5: And that's what last weekend.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Was balling out.
- 2:47Speaker 5: We'll get there.
- 2:48Speaker 1: We'll get there soon, John, I promise.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Our second big thing this week is here today is
- 2:52Speaker 2: new curriculum.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Because they're back in school, they.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Got to learn a lot of new things and that
- 2:56Speaker 2: goes for some of the that's as well because of
- 2:58Speaker 2: a new defensive coordinator and his staff.
- 3:00Speaker 1: It's a bit of learning curve for the players.
- 3:03Speaker 3: I mean, it's just a different scheme, right, it's a
- 3:06Speaker 3: different scheme, and and you know you're you're you're switching
- 3:11Speaker 3: gears a little bit from that that three you know
- 3:14Speaker 3: three four mode to to kind of four down mode.
- 3:17Speaker 3: And and even though you spend so much time in
- 3:20Speaker 3: you know four down defense a lot anyway, and I
- 3:24Speaker 3: think some of the techniques are going to be a
- 3:25Speaker 3: little different. Obviously, there's learning with the verbage and terminology linebacker,
- 3:31Speaker 3: you know, the fits, and just the way what I've
- 3:35Speaker 3: seen so far, the way the coaches have have have
- 3:38Speaker 3: coached them, and some of the drill work that they're
- 3:40Speaker 3: doing on the field.
- 3:42Speaker 2: John, We're making a lot about this scheme being totally
- 3:45Speaker 2: different than last year. How difficult is this going to
- 3:47Speaker 2: be to pick up for the defense?
- 3:48Speaker 5: Well, I mean it's it's new. Uh, they're pro football players,
- 3:52Speaker 5: so I anticipate them being able to pick it up.
- 3:55Speaker 5: The dbs. The corners will play more press. Man, it's
- 3:58Speaker 5: not you've never done that before in their lives. Their
- 4:00Speaker 5: cornerbacks and they know how to play football. So it's
- 4:04Speaker 5: a transition. I don't think it should be a transition
- 4:08Speaker 5: that come Week one they have no idea what they're doing,
- 4:10Speaker 5: but they have to work on it all offseason.
- 4:12Speaker 4: A lot of these guys have played together before and
- 4:15Speaker 4: that's where the communication comes, right. Guys like Josh Allen
- 4:18Speaker 4: looking to the back end and looking at a safety
- 4:20Speaker 4: and saying, hey, Cisco, this is.
- 4:21Speaker 6: Where we do this.
- 4:23Speaker 4: The terminology will come and there are some new faces
- 4:25Speaker 4: out there, Ronald Darby, Eric Armstead, But for the most part,
- 4:29Speaker 4: these guys are in the locker room and in the
- 4:31Speaker 4: meeting rooms and on the plane and the bus together
- 4:34Speaker 4: and they'll figure out how to communicate the new verbage
- 4:37Speaker 4: because they know how to communicate with one another.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Our final big thing today is going to be homework complete.
- 4:42Speaker 2: At the end of last season, GM Trent balk And said,
- 4:45Speaker 2: you wanted this team to get bigger, faster, and more physical,
- 4:48Speaker 2: and head coach Doug Peterson addressed some of those new additions,
- 4:51Speaker 2: both from the draft and also free agency.
- 4:55Speaker 3: I think number one, we've gotten a bigger right, just
- 4:59Speaker 3: physically big right, with some of the draft picks and
- 5:02Speaker 3: undrafted guys and even some of our players coming back,
- 5:06Speaker 3: we've gotten bigger.
- 5:08Speaker 1: I think speed.
- 5:10Speaker 3: We've got a tick faster. You know, obviously we know
- 5:13Speaker 3: Brian Speed is a wide receiver, and some of the dbs. Now,
- 5:16Speaker 3: I mean we've gotten faster.
- 5:19Speaker 6: And then when we put.
- 5:20Speaker 3: The pads on in July in August, we'll see where
- 5:25Speaker 3: we are physically.
- 5:28Speaker 2: We got two out of the three checked off, Brian.
- 5:31Speaker 2: When you look at this is how much of this
- 5:32Speaker 2: is going to be mentality And when they go into
- 5:34Speaker 2: training camp and kind of getting that now that they
- 5:36Speaker 2: are bigger, faster, stronger, if you want to put it
- 5:39Speaker 2: that way, to be more physical and use that as
- 5:41Speaker 2: a pro.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Well, you know every coach wants to be bigger, faster,
- 5:44Speaker 4: stronger and more physical every year. But you hit on
- 5:46Speaker 4: the keyword there, Kai and that's the mentality. And last
- 5:49Speaker 4: year they just didn't play big in big games. I
- 5:53Speaker 4: think it's a mindset. I'm not sure whether it's preparation.
- 5:57Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 5:57Speaker 4: They have to be bigger to play better, But to me,
- 6:00Speaker 4: I want to see this team convert from the potential
- 6:03Speaker 4: to the actual, which they didn't do in the biggest
- 6:06Speaker 4: games last year. And so you say, well, you're bigger
- 6:08Speaker 4: and you're stronger. With Eric Armstead, well he also brings
- 6:12Speaker 4: a certain mentality from a championship caliber club. Same thing
- 6:15Speaker 4: with Ronald Darby out on the edge. I mean he
- 6:17Speaker 4: played in a Super Bowl. So these are guys that
- 6:20Speaker 4: bring the mental side of the game into your locker room,
- 6:23Speaker 4: and you don't quantify that on a chart. You just
- 6:26Speaker 4: understand it by the way that they prepare and the way.
- 6:29Speaker 6: That they play.
- 6:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I think Doug's headed best also last week. Look,
- 6:32Speaker 5: everybody in the NFL is big and strong, and they
- 6:36Speaker 5: play physically. I think more than anything the theme of
- 6:40Speaker 5: the offseason. Yes, they're a little bigger. I think they
- 6:43Speaker 5: may be a little faster at wide receiver, but they
- 6:46Speaker 5: wanted to be more of a team that in the
- 6:49Speaker 5: last five games of the season when you had to
- 6:51Speaker 5: have a win, they just figured out a way. And
- 6:54Speaker 5: maybe you couldn't even point to it after the game
- 6:55Speaker 5: and say why they won, but they could take a
- 6:58Speaker 5: game by the throat. I think Doug want anything withou
- 7:01Speaker 5: like a team that's raw. You know that that's the
- 7:07Speaker 5: intangible you want. You know, I'm gonna grab it and
- 7:09Speaker 5: take over and maybe you roar a little bit around.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Here, Kay, little rar, I'm dressed for it.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Was just about to say, between your dress, Ki and
- 7:17Speaker 4: that roar, we are certainly in costume today.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Let's do it. Stay with us after the break, more roaring,
- 7:23Speaker 1: more roaring.
- 7:24Speaker 2: We're gonna hear from some of the new players here
- 7:26Speaker 2: in Jack Middlle, Move the freight, the fright Magellan Transportation
- 7:37Speaker 2: voted the coolest office space in Jacksonville. You can apply
- 7:40Speaker 2: online at www dot Magellan Logistics dot com.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Welcome back to jag Zam this morning.
- 7:46Speaker 2: As you had Mini camp last week, I know that's
- 7:48Speaker 2: your favorite activity of the year, you guys, But we
- 7:50Speaker 2: do a VOKS coming up, which is exciting to get
- 7:52Speaker 2: everybody back in the building and kind of feels a
- 7:54Speaker 2: little bit more like football. And then training camp is here,
- 7:56Speaker 2: which that's a whole other thing. So let's talk a
- 7:59Speaker 2: little bit about mini camp. We got to see some
- 8:01Speaker 2: of these rookies for the very first time. Obviously, Brian Thomas,
- 8:03Speaker 2: the first round pick, was out there running routes, probably
- 8:06Speaker 2: killing it as they would say, you know, John probably
- 8:08Speaker 2: has some other verbal balling out.
- 8:12Speaker 5: And Brian Thomas did look I mean, in mini camp,
- 8:15Speaker 5: you want guys to look the part. Mason Smith looked
- 8:19Speaker 5: bigger than everybody else and looked more physical than everybody else,
- 8:23Speaker 5: and Brian Thomas looked faster and looked like he was
- 8:27Speaker 5: touched by God more than anybody else on the field
- 8:30Speaker 5: in terms of playing that position. Jarvis Lander, who was
- 8:32Speaker 5: in for a tryout, said he he's got elite talent.
- 8:35Speaker 5: You can see it. He's quicker, catches, the ball cleaner,
- 8:39Speaker 5: all those things that you want to see a guy
- 8:40Speaker 5: when he's running routes on air. So, Brian, you've heard
- 8:44Speaker 5: the same analogy I've heard for years. What you don't
- 8:46Speaker 5: want is the GM and scouts walking out going and
- 8:52Speaker 5: I didn't since you saw any of that. We'll see
- 8:54Speaker 5: more this week.
- 8:55Speaker 4: When you look at him, there's no chance that you
- 8:57Speaker 4: could be anything other than entus.
- 8:59Speaker 6: Just his length stands out to me.
- 9:01Speaker 4: And and when you see a shot of his legs,
- 9:03Speaker 4: how long his legs are, and you.
- 9:08Speaker 6: Look the part.
- 9:09Speaker 4: Now, get in and learn it and be ready to
- 9:11Speaker 4: go so that you can make a contribution in training.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Camp play the part for sure.
- 9:15Speaker 2: You mentioned Mason Smith John Uh, he's one of those
- 9:17Speaker 2: uh that tecond round pick for us that physically is
- 9:20Speaker 2: one of those players that Trent Palky is very excited
- 9:23Speaker 2: to get out here. He spoke after practice a little
- 9:26Speaker 2: bit and about what he's most excited about.
- 9:29Speaker 7: I always been accustomed to hard work, man, just having
- 9:32Speaker 7: having to see my mother, you know, she's a family
- 9:34Speaker 7: pediatrician doctor. Seeing her work, you know, early morning is
- 9:37Speaker 7: long night. Seeing my father work in the field for
- 9:39Speaker 7: thirty plus years. Man, I'm accustomed to so you know
- 9:42Speaker 7: I never really shy await the p no matter what
- 9:45Speaker 7: I ever went through, man. And uh, you know, the
- 9:48Speaker 7: cream always rides to the cr I mean, the cream
- 9:50Speaker 7: always rights to the top, man. And you know, i'ma
- 9:53Speaker 7: just keep my head down and keep working and continue
- 9:55Speaker 7: to progress.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Man. That's all I can think of.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Hard worker, exactly what you wanna hear, especially going into
- 9:59Speaker 2: OTA in training camp around the corner. They're banking a
- 10:02Speaker 2: lot on him, kind of rebounding from that injury that
- 10:06Speaker 2: he suffered when he had an ACL. Terry played last year,
- 10:08Speaker 2: wasn't quite all the way back, but they're hoping now
- 10:10Speaker 2: that he's fully recovered, we'll see a different player.
- 10:13Speaker 4: When you look at him, you see a guy that
- 10:15Speaker 4: you want on your team. And then when you hear
- 10:17Speaker 4: him talk about mother being a pediatrician, dad working in
- 10:20Speaker 4: the oil fields, which we all know is a tough, rough,
- 10:24Speaker 4: blue collar job, it gives you a lot of background
- 10:27Speaker 4: information on how the kid was raised, and so it
- 10:30Speaker 4: gives you a lot of opportunity, a lot of hope
- 10:32Speaker 4: that he's going to come in here and apply that
- 10:35Speaker 4: towards being who he was before the injury in twenty
- 10:38Speaker 4: twenty two.
- 10:39Speaker 5: Yeah, there's been some buzz, Oh why they picked that guy.
- 10:43Speaker 5: He was hurt in college. Look the ACL. It happened
- 10:47Speaker 5: in early twenty twenty two. The common comeback from that
- 10:52Speaker 5: is difficulty coming back. First year, maybe a little slow,
- 10:57Speaker 5: started to come out of it, and then by year
- 10:59Speaker 5: the second year after an ACL, anybody will tell you
- 11:03Speaker 5: a young guy below the age of about twenty five
- 11:06Speaker 5: or twenty six, there's no reason in the world this
- 11:08Speaker 5: day and age, they don't return to full potential. He
- 11:11Speaker 5: was dominant when he was a freshman, and you can
- 11:14Speaker 5: see the size all that stuff. To me, this, you know,
- 11:19Speaker 5: is it the turning point of the draft? Probably? I
- 11:22Speaker 5: mean it's probably what the draft. It can turn the
- 11:25Speaker 5: draft either into great or if he's not good, it's eh.
- 11:28Speaker 5: But all second round picks are short of a crapshoot.
- 11:34Speaker 5: If you get a guy who you think might be dominant,
- 11:37Speaker 5: there another wrong with a pick on that.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Front to me, when as well risk it of course,
- 11:43Speaker 2: and as he's mentioned, obviously a hard worker, and I
- 11:45Speaker 2: think now he trusts that. I think you mentioned earlier
- 11:48Speaker 2: that kind of that trust factor. You're not sure if
- 11:49Speaker 2: your need's going to give. So now that he has
- 11:51Speaker 2: that back, hopefully he'll be able to get back to
- 11:53Speaker 2: his freshman year form. We also heard from his former
- 11:56Speaker 2: defensive coordinator now linebacker coach here Matt House. He was
- 11:59Speaker 2: at LA of course three picks from LSU coming here,
- 12:02Speaker 2: but that House actually weighed in a little bit on
- 12:04Speaker 2: Brian Thomas because going up against him in practice every day,
- 12:06Speaker 2: it was certainly difficult.
- 12:09Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 12:09Speaker 4: BT's got I mean, really good length, obviously elite speed.
- 12:14Speaker 8: He's a matchup problem and he can go up and
- 12:17Speaker 8: get the ball. So you know, in particular last year
- 12:20Speaker 8: at LSU when we were dB short, he was a tough,
- 12:23Speaker 8: tough matchup.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Johnn I know we haven't seen a ton from Binding
- 12:26Speaker 2: Thomas yet, but it's exciting to see that kind of
- 12:30Speaker 2: have that option for Trevor and also a wide receiver
- 12:32Speaker 2: that can maybe grow with Trevor a little bit right,
- 12:33Speaker 2: Like he's had some veteran presence, but now a younger player,
- 12:36Speaker 2: this drafted hero'll be here for the next however many
- 12:38Speaker 2: years to grow with him.
- 12:39Speaker 5: Yeah, he comes into a nice situation. He doesn't have
- 12:41Speaker 5: to be the best receiver immediately. Christian Kirk's perfectly capable
- 12:47Speaker 5: of be in it. He didn't have to be the
- 12:48Speaker 5: go to guy Evan ingers for the cable doing that,
- 12:50Speaker 5: so he can immediately give the team a wrinkle and
- 12:54Speaker 5: have time to develop. I've said many times since he
- 12:57Speaker 5: got drafted. There before the drift, there were three elite receivers,
- 13:02Speaker 5: and out of the rest of them, the analysts thought
- 13:06Speaker 5: that he had the best chance to eventually develop into one.
- 13:08Speaker 5: The mean, he's going to be it immediately. He can
- 13:11Speaker 5: give them Brian Deep the threat, jump ball threat while
- 13:16Speaker 5: he's developing into an overall player.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Well.
- 13:18Speaker 4: I shared this after the draft, But to Cortez Hankton,
- 13:20Speaker 4: who was an undrafted rookie year back in two thousand
- 13:23Speaker 4: and three, is his position coach and was his position
- 13:27Speaker 4: coaching offensive coordinated at LSU, told me he's the most
- 13:30Speaker 4: physically gifted receiver he's ever coached, and he obviously coached
- 13:32Speaker 4: at Georgia before LSU, so that tells you the caliber
- 13:35Speaker 4: of athletes that he's accustomed to.
- 13:37Speaker 6: Said, he's one of my guys.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Guy will get after it, but physically gifted in a
- 13:42Speaker 4: way that you just haven't.
- 13:45Speaker 6: You have difficulty drawing it up. It just shows up like.
- 13:48Speaker 5: That, and again it's routes on air, but he just
- 13:52Speaker 5: makes everything looks easy. I mean, you have things that
- 13:55Speaker 5: are hard for other players trying to make the NFL
- 14:00Speaker 5: as without you thinking about it.
- 14:01Speaker 4: Well, something that Howse said is that it's he's a
- 14:04Speaker 4: difficult matchup, and we're a matchup league where you're trying
- 14:06Speaker 4: to create this matches.
- 14:08Speaker 6: It's different than in college football.
- 14:09Speaker 4: So you know they're gonna find that other teams or
- 14:12Speaker 4: other teams are gonna find that it's tough to have
- 14:14Speaker 4: a corner who is as big and long as he is,
- 14:17Speaker 4: and if he's as fast and physical as we've heard kai,
- 14:21Speaker 4: it'll be a great pack.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Excited to see him and Trevor kind of figure it
- 14:24Speaker 2: out and get going. That'll be definitely fun to see.
- 14:26Speaker 2: And also we should mention in the wide receiver room
- 14:28Speaker 2: Jarvis Landry and for a tryout. So he was part
- 14:30Speaker 2: of that rookie mini campu miss last year due to injury,
- 14:33Speaker 2: but he's been around for quite some time, and he
- 14:35Speaker 2: talked a little bit about what it was important for
- 14:37Speaker 2: him and just coming back to football.
- 14:40Speaker 8: It was stressful. It was stressful, you know, I learned
- 14:42Speaker 8: a lot about the man, you know, and getting healthy
- 14:45Speaker 8: and things like that. Spending more time with family kept
- 14:48Speaker 8: me ground it. You know, had a good support system.
- 14:50Speaker 8: But you know, it's always it's always good to be
- 14:52Speaker 8: back out here.
- 14:54Speaker 5: John.
- 14:55Speaker 1: What do we see from from Jews out there?
- 14:56Speaker 2: Because obviously Jarvis Landry has been around, he's done it
- 14:59Speaker 2: for a while. He was with injury and to kind
- 15:01Speaker 2: of come back with that appreciation, but also the skill
- 15:03Speaker 2: set had he has.
- 15:04Speaker 5: You could tell who the veteran was. He was precise
- 15:10Speaker 5: to me, he looked quick, particularly for his age. You know,
- 15:14Speaker 5: I don't necessarily know that they brought him in thinking
- 15:18Speaker 5: we have to sign him immediately in order to have
- 15:22Speaker 5: him on the team. I think they wanted to give
- 15:23Speaker 5: him the opportunity. They wanted to see what it was
- 15:26Speaker 5: and then perhaps as time moves on, now you know
- 15:29Speaker 5: a little bit more about a guy. Doug said beforehand, Look,
- 15:31Speaker 5: it's a tryout and that's what it is. Cold he
- 15:37Speaker 5: would you feel fine putting Jarvis Lander in an NFL
- 15:40Speaker 5: game right now and having him get you through a
- 15:43Speaker 5: couple of weeks where somebody else isn't isn't performing for
- 15:48Speaker 5: you as an available Sure? Is he a frontline starter.
- 15:51Speaker 5: You know, I'm not sure anybody thinks that right now.
- 15:53Speaker 4: It's a young man's game, and it's hard for guys
- 15:55Speaker 4: who have been to five Pro Bowls to let go.
- 15:57Speaker 4: And clearly he has decided and he's not ready to
- 16:01Speaker 4: let this one go, So it made sense for him
- 16:03Speaker 4: to come. And I would think that at some point
- 16:05Speaker 4: later in the season if they don't like any of
- 16:07Speaker 4: the five undrafted rookies that they signed, right they stacked
- 16:10Speaker 4: up on these guys for camp and you have an
- 16:13Speaker 4: injury like last year with a Jones right where you
- 16:15Speaker 4: were just you were lacking any sort of significant depth
- 16:18Speaker 4: at that position and it hurt the passing game. Well,
- 16:20Speaker 4: then you've got a guy on speed dial if he's
- 16:22Speaker 4: not anywhere else that you can go and bring in,
- 16:25Speaker 4: and you have a book on him now. But they
- 16:29Speaker 4: went heavy in.
- 16:29Speaker 5: The pain.
- 16:32Speaker 6: On wide receiver.
- 16:33Speaker 4: They're going for it, and so those young guys come
- 16:36Speaker 4: in as developmental guys. And really that's where the roster
- 16:40Speaker 4: spots are. The practice squad spots are in Jacksonville for receivers.
- 16:44Speaker 4: With that room as expensive and as draft capital has
- 16:48Speaker 4: been put into it.
- 16:49Speaker 5: And Jarvis also made the comment he has to figure
- 16:52Speaker 5: out if this is something he wants to do sure
- 16:54Speaker 5: and completely commit to it. I'm not to say that
- 16:57Speaker 5: privy those conversations, but you know I at this stage
- 17:01Speaker 5: of careers, that's the verbid you hear is is and
- 17:05Speaker 5: I say, oh my goodness, I have to go get this.
- 17:08Speaker 5: It's I have to find the right fit. I have
- 17:10Speaker 5: to decide this is what I wanna do. Uh So
- 17:12Speaker 5: that's what a tryout you Well.
- 17:14Speaker 4: If you didn't, you probably couldn't next, right, being one
- 17:17Speaker 4: year out, two years out not not not as many
- 17:20Speaker 4: opportunities for those guys.
- 17:21Speaker 2: We've also seen that before though obviously you know veteran
- 17:23Speaker 2: players coming in around training camp, getting into training camp,
- 17:26Speaker 2: maybe like this is kind of f going a couple
- 17:28Speaker 2: games in, like figuring out this is kind of the
- 17:30Speaker 2: end of things. So whether that'll be the situation for him,
- 17:32Speaker 2: or whether things will work out and he'll get picked
- 17:34Speaker 2: up either here or somewhere else, we'll remains to be seen.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Stay with us here on Jagsam though. Coming up, we're
- 17:39Speaker 2: gonna go over some ozone mail bag questions and get
- 17:42Speaker 2: them answered for you with all the latest Jagged style.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Shop now get today's special offer at fanatics dot com.
- 17:53Speaker 1: It's officially licensed everything. Oh zone rolling in. We're gonna
- 18:05Speaker 1: get our questions answered by John.
- 18:07Speaker 2: He's so wise, he has all of that wisdom in
- 18:09Speaker 2: there and that nugget of top.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Thank you for sharing with us, John.
- 18:13Speaker 5: No problem, make no sense.
- 18:15Speaker 6: Any sarcasm there?
- 18:17Speaker 5: Oh that's second.
- 18:17Speaker 2: When Mike from azas he has a question about Gabe
- 18:20Speaker 2: Davis's injury that Doug alluded to in his press conference
- 18:24Speaker 2: last week, he says, is Gabe Davis still recovering from
- 18:27Speaker 2: an injury that he suffered while he was still with
- 18:29Speaker 2: the Buffalo Bills. Why would you when you sign a
- 18:31Speaker 2: free agent? Isn't it pending up passing a physical? Did
- 18:34Speaker 2: the Jags not check gave out physically? Why wouldn't you
- 18:36Speaker 2: disclose the injury at that time? There's a lot of questions,
- 18:39Speaker 2: more than one question in this or is this a
- 18:41Speaker 2: new injury that no one wants to take the blame for.
- 18:43Speaker 1: I'm confused.
- 18:44Speaker 5: Well, Mike came in, and Mike came in kind of hot. Yes,
- 18:48Speaker 5: Gabe Davis was hurt in the last game of the
- 18:50Speaker 5: season last year and didn't play in the playoffs. They
- 18:53Speaker 5: knew it. I don't think it's as uncommon as perhaps
- 18:57Speaker 5: Mike believed, and they knew this is gonna be the
- 19:00Speaker 5: situation coming in. H. He's a veteran. Yes, they have
- 19:04Speaker 5: an idea where the knee injury is. It wasn't disclosed
- 19:08Speaker 5: because there was nothing to disclose, so H, I anticipate
- 19:14Speaker 5: that he'll be ready to go in training camp. And uh,
- 19:16Speaker 5: you know Darius Williams first year here a couple of
- 19:19Speaker 5: years back, remember, didn't participate until I think training camp. Uh,
- 19:23Speaker 5: it's pretty common.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Eric Harp said as well, the background injury, So it's
- 19:27Speaker 2: very common.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Let's check it.
- 19:29Speaker 5: As I said to Mike, breathe, it's met.
- 19:32Speaker 1: It's okay, We're okay. We're getting a little lamp up,
- 19:34Speaker 1: all right.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Sean from Oakley, if wanted to know, when will be
- 19:36Speaker 2: the first opportunity for the Jaguars to practice that new
- 19:39Speaker 2: kickoff rule simulating game conditions obviously, because they can't go
- 19:43Speaker 2: against each other right now at this stage.
- 19:44Speaker 5: Well practice they'll get a chance to simulate it. And
- 19:47Speaker 5: you know there's different levels they can do. In OTAs,
- 19:51Speaker 5: they can do everything except hit each other while doing it.
- 19:54Speaker 5: In training camp, they can get helmets on and actually
- 19:57Speaker 5: hit each other while doing it, and then you can
- 19:59Speaker 5: really simulate in a preseason game. This one, to me,
- 20:02Speaker 5: Brian feels like they're going to have some theories on
- 20:05Speaker 5: how it's going to look. Everybody's going to have their approach,
- 20:07Speaker 5: and then starting in preseason is when you're gonna see
- 20:11Speaker 5: what the league always does, which is, hey, this guy's
- 20:14Speaker 5: doing this, and start copying it. It will homogenize once
- 20:19Speaker 5: the preseason games.
- 20:21Speaker 4: Well, yeah, you have thirty two different special teams coordinators
- 20:24Speaker 4: sixty four if you count their assistant special teams score.
- 20:27Speaker 5: In ninety six if you count the other it's right.
- 20:31Speaker 4: And they all have different ideas and they've collaborated to help.
- 20:34Speaker 6: The league come to the conclusion of what the rule
- 20:36Speaker 6: could be.
- 20:37Speaker 4: But everybody's going to have a different spin on it,
- 20:39Speaker 4: so it'll be interesting to see a month or two
- 20:41Speaker 4: into the season who's really good at it.
- 20:44Speaker 5: But it was an interesting question because there has been
- 20:47Speaker 5: a lot of conversation as soon as this thing came
- 20:50Speaker 5: into being. Remember it wasn't put in until the owners meeting,
- 20:53Speaker 5: so they really didn't attack free agency that much with
- 20:57Speaker 5: this thing in mind. So all of a sudden, the
- 20:58Speaker 5: draft becomes a and they had to talk amongst themselves
- 21:02Speaker 5: and figure out what everybody else is doing. I'm sure
- 21:05Speaker 5: different special teams coaches are talking to each other, but
- 21:07Speaker 5: then not given away too much of what they're going
- 21:09Speaker 5: to do.
- 21:11Speaker 9: So it's going to be an interesting rules change. I'm
- 21:13Speaker 9: excited about it because we all should be. The kickoffs
- 21:15Speaker 9: went away and this is a clever, innovative way to
- 21:18Speaker 9: bring it back. And if this goes well, maybe they'll
- 21:21Speaker 9: come up with the way that is that the XFL does.
- 21:24Speaker 9: The on tide kick was fourth and ten from your
- 21:27Speaker 9: twenty five high risk, you know, because on tide kicks
- 21:30Speaker 9: have gone away too, and that was always a fun
- 21:32Speaker 9: part of the game when games got close.
- 21:34Speaker 6: Hopefully this leads to something like that.
- 21:36Speaker 2: We'll have to see how the things go, but I
- 21:38Speaker 2: am excited to see it in game action for sure.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Our final question for you John a little bit broader
- 21:42Speaker 2: of a question from Bob and Bobsville. Of course, confidence
- 21:46Speaker 2: is key, particularly in the NFL. Confidence grows through success,
- 21:50Speaker 2: but even the most confident player can be shaken by
- 21:52Speaker 2: too many failures. It takes a season to get used
- 21:55Speaker 2: to the NFL and meaningfully contribute. Why does so many
- 21:58Speaker 2: teams put rookies or young players and sit your in
- 22:00Speaker 2: which they're likely to fail.
- 22:02Speaker 5: Well, this was sort of a quarterbacks based question, but
- 22:04Speaker 5: I think I think it sort of applies to other
- 22:06Speaker 5: positions as well. Yeah, you would love I think most teams,
- 22:11Speaker 5: most coaches would tell you most rookies, it would be
- 22:14Speaker 5: great if they had a year to develop, and realistically,
- 22:18Speaker 5: that's sort of what happens. Everybody wants to see rookies
- 22:21Speaker 5: contribute immediately, and some do. But for the most part,
- 22:25Speaker 5: if there's what you know, three hundred and fifty players
- 22:28Speaker 5: in the rookie class, you're gonna get a few that
- 22:30Speaker 5: make a huge impact. Most of them are really ready
- 22:34Speaker 5: to be big time players or you know, real contributions
- 22:39Speaker 5: at the end of the season. Why don't they wait?
- 22:41Speaker 5: Because it's a win now league.
- 22:42Speaker 4: Well, and for way back, the cyburkept change the game.
- 22:48Speaker 6: Right.
- 22:48Speaker 4: It used to be you bring guys in and they
- 22:50Speaker 4: could play behind an established veteran. But now with as
- 22:52Speaker 4: much money is committed to players, you can't keep all
- 22:56Speaker 4: your veterans. Free agency takes them away. And so now
- 22:59Speaker 4: in the last three years since free agency has become
- 23:02Speaker 4: a really important part of building a team, they need
- 23:05Speaker 4: rookies to step in because they lose guys.
- 23:07Speaker 5: And the dynamic has become the way it's set up now.
- 23:13Speaker 5: It's necessary, but it also causes way too much early
- 23:17Speaker 5: criticism of a lot of young players. Now the development
- 23:21Speaker 5: that used to take place sort of behind the scenes
- 23:24Speaker 5: takes place as rookies. So whenever there is a mistake, oh,
- 23:27Speaker 5: it's the worst he's the worst player I've ever seen,
- 23:30Speaker 5: when in reality, a lot of these guys always go
- 23:33Speaker 5: back to Reggie Wayne, who played seven games as a rookie,
- 23:38Speaker 5: did not give any indication that he was going to
- 23:41Speaker 5: be good, and then by his third or fourth years
- 23:43Speaker 5: a Pro Bowl and it might be in the Hall
- 23:45Speaker 5: of Fame. Reggie wasn't a bad player as a rookie.
- 23:48Speaker 5: He was a young player who needed some more time.
- 23:51Speaker 5: So that we now get to watch the rough draft,
- 23:56Speaker 5: and it can be rough on these guys when they're
- 23:58Speaker 5: criticized for.
- 23:58Speaker 2: It, certainly as it's not an easy thing and taking
- 24:01Speaker 2: that time to get used to the NFL. As we're
- 24:03Speaker 2: seeing those rookies get in the building this week their
- 24:04Speaker 2: first week kind of practicing off season with some of
- 24:07Speaker 2: the vet players, so we'll get to see what that
- 24:09Speaker 2: looks like in OTAs.
- 24:11Speaker 1: Stay with us on jags Aam.
- 24:13Speaker 2: We'll be right here after the break. Welcome back into
- 24:23Speaker 2: jags Am here if we're getting ready for OTAs next
- 24:27Speaker 2: week and kind of finally getting back into football a
- 24:29Speaker 2: little bit. I did want to bring back our jags
- 24:32Speaker 2: Am off season to do list cause they started this
- 24:34Speaker 2: a couple of months ago. That's just what we know.
- 24:37Speaker 2: We've discussed on JAGSAM them some things we wanted to
- 24:39Speaker 2: go over cause I do want to give them credit.
- 24:40Speaker 2: We can check a couple of things off. I'm very
- 24:42Speaker 2: I'm a list person. I have the post sits all this,
- 24:44Speaker 2: so I want to keep track of things. So that's
- 24:46Speaker 2: Josh Allen figured out. That was the big number one
- 24:49Speaker 2: thing for me for sure. Addressing the line issues. We'll
- 24:52Speaker 2: have to see how this ends up, but they seem
- 24:54Speaker 2: to have addressed it as much as they're going to
- 24:55Speaker 2: address it. They have a new center in the building,
- 24:57Speaker 2: signing Ezra Cleveland long term and whatever they're going to
- 25:01Speaker 2: try to do with some of the backups in terms
- 25:03Speaker 2: of rookies and what they had last year in Cooper Hodges,
- 25:06Speaker 2: adding some depth on defense. We did see some additions there,
- 25:09Speaker 2: some big additions there, and then what I have left
- 25:12Speaker 2: is pay Trevor question mark. As we saw that deal
- 25:15Speaker 2: with Jared Goff got done yesterday, so maybe now Trevor's
- 25:18Speaker 2: looking at that, maybe coming up in the next week months,
- 25:21Speaker 2: however many days, and then getting that new defense up
- 25:24Speaker 2: to speed with their new defensive staff and defensive coordinator.
- 25:27Speaker 2: You guys, if you want anything on the list, let
- 25:29Speaker 2: me know. You know, I love to stay organized.
- 25:31Speaker 5: Now, so far, so good, and I think both things
- 25:33Speaker 5: you too, you know, get new defensive to speed's gonna
- 25:37Speaker 5: happy is what they're gonna be doing the next few months.
- 25:39Speaker 5: I'd be surprised if Trevor doesn't get down before the season.
- 25:41Speaker 4: But we'll say, I keep hearing that they're working at
- 25:44Speaker 4: it and that it's likely to happen, but no date.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Sure, well, we'll be keeping an eye and our ears
- 25:49Speaker 2: open for that as well. Next week OTAs and we'll
- 25:52Speaker 2: get that schedule lease that's coming out on Wednesday, So
- 25:54Speaker 2: lots to talk about. Make sure you check in with
- 25:56Speaker 2: us next week here on jags Am
