- 0:00I'm Hillary Condon. Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:03Network. Our final hour of the one that's
- 0:06not yours. You've got to work tonight.
- 0:15Our number 2, Millery Condon, welcome back our final hour of
- 0:18the week. Except for you, we've got high
- 0:20school hoops tonight. Do going to be making my way up
- 0:22to your neck of the woods are you Ankeny Waukee northwest the
- 0:25top five showdown on the girls side and Waukee northwest on the
- 0:29boys side who was number one took their first loss the last
- 0:32time out against. Time for the Girls 6. 15 tip off
- 0:35for the girls side. 745 estimated for the boys, I think
- 0:39maybe like 10% of the time and actually tips off at 7:45,
- 0:42usually about 8:00 for the boys side of that one.
- 0:44Colin Rice future a line eye on the side for Waukee Northwest
- 0:48and they are loaded once again this year.
- 0:50Little night of hoops out there in a Friday.
- 0:52Good stuff on the boat, but that's not the programming
- 0:54announcement that we tease going out of our number 1.
- 0:57So I know Sean Roberts has been working hard on this with the
- 1:00Westwood one, and you've heard it all football season long, You
- 1:03know, the Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football, the
- 1:05playoffs, etcetera. the Super Bowl is going to be here.
- 1:07And look, I get it right, You're going to watch it on TV if you
- 1:10have the option. But for some people, they don't
- 1:12have the option. You're out in the bottom or
- 1:13whatever the big announcement. Hand raised.
- 1:16Trench right, exactly you so I I think maybe the most now the
- 1:22Super Bowl is pretty popular, but Westwood ones maybe second
- 1:26most prominent. Package.
- 1:30Oh yeah. Would be March Madness and KX&O
- 1:33is going to be the home of March Madness.
- 1:36If you have to work a Thursday or Friday and you have to if
- 1:39you're in your job that you're driving around, you love college
- 1:41hoops, you love the first two days of the tournament or you're
- 1:45at a desk, it's your that still allows you to download an app
- 1:48and listen, you can do it that way.
- 1:49But we've got wrap around coverage of Thursday, Friday and
- 1:53then into the weekend, Saturday, Sunday, the Sweet 16, the final
- 1:59four games, the elite eight games.
- 2:01The only thing that may stop us on those might be an Iowa wild
- 2:04game because the Iowa State women, you know, they'd be
- 2:07playing in it perhaps if they get that far, but but who knows?
- 2:11So that I think it's huge used to have that property here back
- 2:15in the day and it was so damn popular.
- 2:17So Westwood one and KX&O bringing you March madness.
- 2:22We will also bring you, we're going to bring you Tom Cacart
- 2:25momentarily, then Eugene Repay and Mike Palm.
- 2:28But on Sunday day, Selection Sunday, again, you're going to
- 2:32watch it if you can. But if you can't and you're in
- 2:34your car, Selection Sunday and I need to know there was such
- 2:37programming that will air here on KXO.
- 2:41So you want to see, you know, where Iowa State's going, what
- 2:44seed did they get, where I would did they get in or did they jump
- 2:47off the bubble, those type of things.
- 2:49The Selection Sunday show will air live and then Thursday,
- 2:53Friday, Saturday, Sunday, opening weekend of the
- 2:56tournament with the entire thing.
- 2:57So that is absolute lately massive that that has come back
- 3:01to its rightful home here in central Iowa.
- 3:03After all, we are Des Moines sports station one O 6.3 KX&O
- 3:07tip of the cap to you, Mr. program director Sean Roberts
- 3:12for getting that accomplished. Let's talk to Tom Caker at
- 3:14hawkeyereport.com. Hello, Tom, how are you?
- 3:17I'm, I'm good portaling, you know?
- 3:21I'm not in the portal yet, right?
- 3:23Not in the portal. You portaled, what, two years
- 3:25ago now? Yeah, it's a little over two
- 3:28years ago. I went to Portal.
- 3:30I don't remember that. Went for over 2 on three.
- 3:33Oh, yeah, yeah, that way, yes. That was good for everybody.
- 3:36And I think that's been, don't you think, Tom?
- 3:39I mean, yeah, Rivals was great, etcetera, etcetera.
- 3:41Oh, old Chambliss was just denied his sixth year,
- 3:44apparently. Thank you.
- 3:45Yeah, How about that? So that contract will be null
- 3:48and void, I'm guessing with Ole Miss.
- 3:51Anyways, good stuff. I appreciate being that being
- 3:54sent to me, but it did interrupt my train of thoughts.
- 3:56So, but back to the rivals on three, that's worked out well,
- 4:00Tom, from your perspective, has it not?
- 4:03Yeah, because we ended up buying Rivals.
- 4:06Right. So yeah.
- 4:07I just got here earlier. Yeah, you did good stuff.
- 4:10Well, let's get into, you know, let's get to start with the
- 4:13portal, then we'll move over to baseball, arts baseball to
- 4:15basketball coming up this weekend.
- 4:17Obviously Enteringer was the one that kind of shook the
- 4:19foundations a little bit. Yeah.
- 4:21Where's any is there and is there another surprise coming?
- 4:25I guess, Tom, from what we consider a negative perspective.
- 4:31You never, you know. Yeah, you never.
- 4:33The entering your thing, you never know.
- 4:36Somebody just went, yeah, CJ Bell went in today, but that was
- 4:38a freshman and he was down the depth chart.
- 4:41So I, you know, he may want to get closer to home.
- 4:44Don't know, but yeah, the the portal is just such a you never
- 4:52know when a kids going to just decide to up and leave and and,
- 4:57you know, entering her is the classic example of that.
- 5:00You know, you, you didn't outright say, yeah, I'm coming
- 5:04back, but he kind of just danced around it and made it seem like
- 5:08he was coming back. And I don't know.
- 5:11I just kind of I kind of go back to when he walks on senior day.
- 5:15And that just seemed like an odd decision at the time, especially
- 5:20if you think you're coming back. And then now it all makes sense.
- 5:23Now it no, now we know why he did it the way he did it.
- 5:26So, but that's the world we live in.
- 5:29So good for him. You know what, Tom, you look at
- 5:33kind of the foundational movement, a couple of guys maybe
- 5:35showing up at Michigan State. We see Dakin, we see Jazz
- 5:38Patterson that are making their way there.
- 5:41Do you read anything more into it or is it just the era that
- 5:43we're in? Do you do you take this a step
- 5:46further or is it even worth the headspace to worry about down
- 5:49the road? What this means, guys leaving
- 5:51things like that because overall in comparison to most every
- 5:55other program out there, they're still aren't a ton of guys that
- 5:57are leaving Iowa. Yeah, there's still not when you
- 6:01compare it to most places. And the Dakin thing made
- 6:06complete sense, right? You know, he, he's, he's, you
- 6:11know, he was recruited to Iowa by Levar Woods and he feels
- 6:14really comfortable with Levar Woods.
- 6:16So he, it makes sense that he would want to go and continue
- 6:19his career with Levar Woods. The Patterson thing, I'm
- 6:24wondering if that was just his best offer and best opportunity.
- 6:27And and that's, that's, that's my guess is best offer, best
- 6:31opportunity to play at that level and probably some, you
- 6:35know, decent cheddar along the way.
- 6:38So why not? And I hope Jazz does really
- 6:41well. I hope he gets to be their lead
- 6:42back and has a great year because he's a really solid kid.
- 6:47I guess Hawkeye fans are holding out hope that there's a receiver
- 6:49coming to Iowa City. Can you shed any light on that?
- 6:53Tom? Is there, you know, is there a
- 6:55receiver that's kicking the tires on Iowa that you're aware
- 6:58of? I haven't really heard much
- 7:01about. I just heard the two the two
- 7:04guys that one of them committed to Cincinnati, Kate Wolford, the
- 7:09guy that they really liked early on was Tony Diaz, the kid from
- 7:12Texas Rio Grande rally who true freshman and did really, really
- 7:17well this year and got offered by Alabama.
- 7:20But he you know, he's he's been offered by Alabama now.
- 7:25So I think everybody kind of tunes that one out like, yeah,
- 7:28maybe not, but you never know. You know, I've kind of coined
- 7:34this thing. Trent Will.
- 7:36Trent will probably agree with me that Iowa almost has to pay a
- 7:40tax on receivers, no doubt, to get them.
- 7:43They just almost have to overpay for them because of the earned
- 7:48or not. The reputation of the offense is
- 7:51they don't throw the ball a lot. Receivers want to do one thing.
- 7:54They want to catch the football. So it's just just how it is and
- 7:59that's one of the things that's always going to be an issue and
- 8:03they're probably going to have to pay a tax on it.
- 8:06You also, you mentioned the Diaz moving on and losing a guy like
- 8:10Wolford who looked like a perfect fit, a guy that was a
- 8:12returner, averaged nearly 27 yards per reception, 7
- 8:15touchdowns at 19 catches. I mean, a perfect fit for what I
- 8:19was trying to do. You have to pay that taxes.
- 8:21It's just, it's that chicken and egg thing, isn't it Tom?
- 8:23Where like you can't throw the ball because you don't have
- 8:25receivers. You don't.
- 8:26He'll have receivers so he can't throw the ball, quarterback, all
- 8:29the different things. It's not just the taxi have to
- 8:31do it. It's it's the selling part of
- 8:33it. And it just doesn't feel like
- 8:35for whatever reason, the Iowa staff and Tim Lester and
- 8:37company, the message just isn't working with receivers.
- 8:40However, this freshman class, the Stinson kid, they believe
- 8:45that he's going to come in and be able to play right away.
- 8:48Yeah, they really believe that he's going to help, help them
- 8:51immediately. He's going to get in that
- 8:53semester. So they they're really high on
- 8:55him. The Schaefer kid too out of
- 8:57Wisconsin. They they like him, but they
- 9:00think Stinson can come in right away and and help them.
- 9:02And yeah, Wolford would have been like, you know, the the
- 9:05Nick Easley Kaden Legion kind of just, you know, 5-10 white ride
- 9:11receiver that catches things and makes in his quick and space and
- 9:16you kind of make things happen. That's who he was and it seemed
- 9:20like that's kind of something that they need in this offense.
- 9:24So but maybe it'll turn out to be somebody else now who who
- 9:28knows? I know they're not done and
- 9:31they're still trying to get more guys, but we'll have to have to
- 9:35wait how it and you know, safety now becomes an impressive
- 9:39position for them really because because Xavier Wampa's done and
- 9:44Conan enteringer is gone. So you're 2 guys with experience
- 9:47back there and Kale Cleric, who was their one of their backups.
- 9:51He's left too. I think probably because they
- 9:54told him he wasn't going to start and they've already got
- 9:57Anthony Hawkins from Villanova. The guy that they really, really
- 10:02like though is the the Tyler Brown kid from James Madison and
- 10:09we'll see if they can that he's on campus this week.
- 10:13So we'll see if they can reel him in.
- 10:17He would be a really good get. And also Xavier Styles from
- 10:20Robert Morris is another kid that that's been on campus that
- 10:24I think they've got a shot at. He's going to Pittsburgh on
- 10:28Saturday. So we'll see if but if they can
- 10:31get both those guys to go with the kid from Villanova, Hawkins,
- 10:34I think they'd be in better shape at the back end.
- 10:37Let's talk a little basketball. Illinois comes to town.
- 10:39Trent and I both, we looked ahead to this four-game stretch,
- 10:42thought, boy, it should be nice if you get this Minnesota win
- 10:44because here comes Illinois and then on the road Purdue in
- 10:48Indiana. Obviously the Minnesota game did
- 10:50not end at the favorable result. So when you look back at that
- 10:54game, Tom, what what went wrong? Obviously Sturtz, you know, he
- 10:58struggled shooting the basketball foul trouble in early
- 11:01in the basketball game, struggled, didn't score in the
- 11:03first half, finished with 21. Folgaris was blanked in the
- 11:07game. When you look back at Minnesota
- 11:09or when McCullum looks back, what did he say about the game
- 11:12from earlier this week? Yeah, it was just one of those
- 11:18games where it felt like at one point I was in in control, and
- 11:22then they weren't. And I thought they, and I think
- 11:27we're going to see more and more of this moving forward.
- 11:30They used #6 Minnesota Reynolds, I think was his name.
- 11:37Used him to kind of just bully Sturtz.
- 11:40Got really physical with him, got in his space and he could
- 11:43stay in front of them. And I thought that really
- 11:45bothered Bennett. He fought through those screens
- 11:47that they were trying to set up top and the result was he was O
- 11:519 now Reynolds. Led the team in scoring.
- 11:55Yeah, and you know, I and I think, you know, for for all of
- 12:01Fran Mccaffrey's flaws, you can never say he didn't work the
- 12:05refs, right. I don't know that Ben.
- 12:08And I asked Ben this after the game.
- 12:11I said that, you know, the foul disparity was there again in a
- 12:14in a big 10 game and you know, do you need to work the rest
- 12:18more? What do you need to do there?
- 12:19And he just kind of said I need to teach the guys how to draw
- 12:22files. But I I go back to and and you
- 12:25guys will probably remember this plate.
- 12:26They get a run out and TV on Banks is going to going to the
- 12:30hole and got bodied and missed it and no call and then on the
- 12:34other end number six goes to the goes to the cup and gets fouled
- 12:39and finishes and I thought that was a huge play in the game.
- 12:41Crocker, Jones. Massive play.
- 12:44Yeah, I remember. Tom, it's Illinois.
- 12:47This is the rivalry matchup certainly for you and our for
- 12:49our friends listening over in the Quad Cities on 12:30 AM.
- 12:52Hello to all of you out there. This is certainly a big
- 12:56opportunity, a big spot that is in front of them.
- 12:59Boswell, Speaking of good defenders, as good a defenders
- 13:01there is in the Big 10, he'll get Bennett Sturtz on the other
- 13:03end of the floor. What can you tell us about this
- 13:06Illinois team and how difficult will it be for the Hawkeyes to
- 13:09find a way in the win column? They're a challenging team.
- 13:13They're the, according to Ken Palm, they're the biggest team
- 13:16in the country this year. Really.
- 13:18Yeah. And they've got the both the
- 13:20VSIC brothers and they're both over 7 foot.
- 13:24They've got guys. 7 two and seven one.
- 13:27Wow. Yeah, they got some big fellas
- 13:30on that team and you know, they've got some shooters with,
- 13:34you know, Paige Stoyakovich's kid is a really good shooter and
- 13:39a good player. The kid to watch is that King
- 13:41Waggler kid. He is.
- 13:44He's a true freshman. He was like a top 150 kid and he
- 13:48is just tearing it up. Lately.
- 13:50He has been playing terrific basketball and he's 66, got a
- 13:54little ranginess to them, can shoot threes, can get to the
- 13:56basket. So Iowa is going to have their
- 13:59hands full. And you know, the one thing that
- 14:01we worry about with Iowa is going up against size because
- 14:04they, you know, can give up some on the on the backboard.
- 14:07But I kind of think this is a get right game for Iowa.
- 14:10This is just Illinois had to play last night against Rutgers
- 14:13at home. So they got a shorter turn
- 14:16around and going on the road and I was going to be a little bit
- 14:22healthier. I think they had, you know, a
- 14:24bug going through the the team earlier this week.
- 14:27But I think everybody's gotten healthier now.
- 14:29So I just feel like this is one of those get right games for
- 14:33Iowa coming up. But if they don't get it,
- 14:36they're probably staring at a four-game losing streak and I
- 14:39don't remember the last. I don't know if Ben McCollum
- 14:41would remember the last time he had a four-game losing streak.
- 14:44I. Would be surprised if he did.
- 14:45Yeah. I didn't realize Waggler's
- 14:46leading the team in scoring. Hey, Tom Thilson, thanks for
- 14:49jumping on, as always, hawkeyereport.com.
- 14:51Part of On Three Media. Tom, thank you.
- 14:53We'll talk to you in seven days. Appreciate it, Tom.
- 14:55Yep. OK.
- 14:56See you, buddy. Let's get to from the Hawks to
- 14:59the clones, here's Eugene Repay. Des Moines Register.
- 15:01Eugene Trenton can thanks for giving us a few minutes.
- 15:04Here comes an Oklahoma State team tomorrow, an Oklahoma State
- 15:07team that on the surface may be better than, you know, we
- 15:12thought that they would be once we started turning our attention
- 15:15in some respects from football to basketball.
- 15:18But this is it's a big number. Trent said the point spreads be
- 15:21somewhere around 20. But this Oklahoma State team,
- 15:24it's got, it's a sneaky team. How about that, Eugene?
- 15:28Yeah, they're definitely a lot better this year.
- 15:30It's one of those where you really have to wait and see in
- 15:32this day and age. Oklahoma State only brought back
- 15:35one player from last season and it was a freshman that was deep
- 15:39on the bench. So really no key players were
- 15:42back. Completely brand new team.
- 15:44They're 12 and 3 coming in. They play an up tempo style, a
- 15:47lot of balance on their offense. They're averaging over 90 points
- 15:50per game with five different players averaging in double
- 15:54figures. It's an impressive team.
- 15:55They're definitely better this year and but I do that.
- 15:58Iowa State should be in good hands.
- 16:00Going to be a fast-paced game. They're going to push it up and
- 16:02down the floor. I think it's going to be an
- 16:03entertaining one. Certainly going to be one that
- 16:05will be fun for the fans to watch and get going.
- 16:08Well, we see this Iowa State team get going at 15 and oh, the
- 16:11schedule coming up after this Oklahoma State game, couple of
- 16:14Rd. trips to Kansas next week in Cincinnati after that.
- 16:17Yet you start to dream a little bit.
- 16:19I mean, Kansas, we still don't know what Peterson's going to
- 16:21look like when we get to Tuesday, how many minutes he's
- 16:23going to have, what kind of minutes restrictions there.
- 16:25That Cincinnati road trip is not certainly daunting by any means.
- 16:29How long can this go? I mean, we're talking about some
- 16:31crazy territory and certainly territory Iowa State's never
- 16:34been before when he looked forward at this schedule before.
- 16:37Definitely gets more to more difficult in February.
- 16:40Yeah, no, without a doubt. And there's a big chance here
- 16:42that they can go into February still undefeated.
- 16:45And then from there, you look at some of those home games that
- 16:47they'll have to early February. So you can really get excited
- 16:53here. There's a lot to be excited
- 16:53about. I think a lot about this streak
- 16:56will hinge on that trip to Allen Field House.
- 16:58It feels like no matter how good or bad Kansas may be, that's
- 17:01just always just such a tricky place to play in.
- 17:03But the way that Iowa State has been handling business so far,
- 17:06both ends of the floor has been super impressive.
- 17:08I thought that they showed major puts at Baylor playing very
- 17:13locked down defense despite not getting what they wanted early
- 17:15on on the offensive end, and then as things started to settle
- 17:18down in the second-half, they really pulled away there.
- 17:21They're also honoring us. Is it the 40 year anniversary of
- 17:24the Sweet 16 team, Johnny, or Sweet 16 team with Hornacek?
- 17:27Do you know what kind of special ceremonies they've got they've
- 17:30got planned for that day that I'm sure they'll introduce them
- 17:33at the very minimum at halftime? Do you know anything more about
- 17:36that, Eugene? Yeah, there's going to be a cool
- 17:39recognition ceremony for that 40th anniversary of that 1986
- 17:43Sweet 16 team that you mentioned, the the first ever
- 17:46Iowa State team to reach a Sweet 16.
- 17:48They pulled out a massive upset over at the time, top five
- 17:52ranked Michigan, who was the second seed in the NCAA
- 17:54Tournament. They're going to be recognizing
- 17:55them. They're also going to be
- 17:56recognizing Johnny Orr's two first postseason teams of the
- 17:591984 NIT team, which was the first team to get into any sort
- 18:03of season tournament in 4 decades.
- 18:06And then the 85 team which became the first team to reach
- 18:09the NCAA Tournament for Iowa State since 1944.
- 18:13And the 19441, there were only eight teams back then, so it was
- 18:17definitely a monumental accomplishment at that time.
- 18:22Outstanding teams and there was a real possibility we could have
- 18:25saw Iowa, Iowa State collide in that Sweet 16.
- 18:27No kidding. That season, Iowa got knocked
- 18:30off by two in the first round by NC State, but they were in the
- 18:33same half of the bracket on the other side.
- 18:35If Iowa would have won, they would have played Arkansas
- 18:37Little Rock in the second round last.
- 18:39That didn't happen. The lost to NC State and we
- 18:41didn't get that match up. But just crazy.
- 18:43I mean, we talked about 40 years since that team.
- 18:46Some great, certainly memories that are there.
- 18:48Eugene, second year on the beat, great start that he saw last
- 18:52year out of this basketball team.
- 18:53What's different? What's different for this team?
- 18:55And maybe by the time we get to March, what feels different that
- 18:58they have a deep run in them? It it feels like that this
- 19:01year's team is a lot better at handling success.
- 19:04It feels like they're a lot better when it comes to main,
- 19:06you know, handling the way that they approached the game and and
- 19:10keeping it consistent rather than last year where there was a
- 19:13lot of hype, there was a lot of outside noise.
- 19:15There were also some injuries and things like that.
- 19:17But it feels like that this team does a much better job of just
- 19:20staying the course, staying true.
- 19:22It's process and it's identity. I think a lot of it helps with
- 19:24the maturity of attainment. Lipsy and Joshua Jefferson Mail
- 19:28on Televich I was taking more of a leadership role.
- 19:31You also can't discount the other returners like Nate Heisey
- 19:33and Kate Kelderman and what they mean in that locker room.
- 19:36So for me, it just feels like this team has just a lot more.
- 19:39They're playing a lot more freely, they're playing a lot
- 19:41more loosely, but they also just handle the expectations and and
- 19:44success a lot better. What what was Waco like for you
- 19:48when you covering basketball there?
- 19:50The reading is kind of built differently, right?
- 19:52It seems like there's a not very many rows in the lower deck and
- 19:55then you've got your very quickly on to that second deck.
- 19:58What's it like go watching a game?
- 19:59Their life? It was definitely a pretty cool
- 20:02arena. It's a new one that just opened
- 20:04up in 2024, but I thought the the design of it was
- 20:08interesting. Like you mentioned, you got like
- 20:10the student section right behind the benches.
- 20:12Definitely a lot, few receipts on that first bowl, but then it
- 20:17really shoots up and into the upper deck.
- 20:19I've from what I've heard about Baylor fans or just from talking
- 20:23to some locals, they have mixed feelings about it.
- 20:25They don't know. Some of them don't even know why
- 20:27they have that arena because the other one was also about 20
- 20:31years old, so it still wasn't even that old, but it was a cool
- 20:34environment. It was also nice to just be in
- 20:36Texas where it was 80°, so you got to wear the shorts.
- 20:38A little bit. That a boy.
- 20:40Good stuff. Eugene repay Des Moines Register
- 20:42desmoinesregister.com Travis signs Eugene repay on the
- 20:46Cyclones beat. Eugene, thanks for doing this.
- 20:48Appreciate you jumping on as always.
- 20:50We'll talk to you in seven days. Thanks pal.
- 20:52Thanks guys. Good to talk to Eugene Repay as
- 20:54we check in on Iowa State. And thanks to Tom Caker as well.
- 20:58If you missed it or the announcement, the top of the
- 21:00hour March Madness, KXNO, your home for March Madness, courtesy
- 21:05of Westwood One throughout the entire tournament.
- 21:09We'll take your time out, head to Las Vegas.
- 21:10Mike Palm, VP of operations at Circus Sports.
- 21:13He's next. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 21:15Network, right, 130. Miller and Condon, welcome back,
- 21:20Iowa Sports Radio Network. We're with you until 2 March
- 21:24Madness coming to KXNO. All the opening round action
- 21:29wrap around coverage throughout the day and evening.
- 21:31More about that as we get closer to it.
- 21:33Let's head to Las Vegas. Mike Palm, the VP of operations
- 21:36at Circus Sports. Quite a place to watch March
- 21:39Madness. Well, any sporting events to be
- 21:40fair. Hello, Mike, Trent, Ken, how are
- 21:42you? How are you, fellas?
- 21:44I think I'll be heading to Kansas City for the Big 12
- 21:47Tournament this year with Circus George.
- 21:49I think we're going to do an activation down there at Kansas
- 21:52City Live. Nice.
- 21:54Trying to put the trying to put the details of that trip
- 21:56together to come down for the Wednesday through Saturday.
- 22:00Maybe a road trip for Miller and Condon might need to make our
- 22:02way down there, too. Perfect reason to do so.
- 22:05We're in. Well, let's get I want to go
- 22:07start with last night, Mike. Obviously I know that you guys
- 22:10did not need old miss to win the national championship.
- 22:13That's putting it mildly. They are now out.
- 22:15But the game itself, obviously you're upside down futures
- 22:18market. But when the when it was all
- 22:20said and done, you know the ball was in the air and the game was
- 22:23under way. Who did you need at that point,
- 22:25Miami or old miss in the game itself, Mike?
- 22:29Well, we definitely needed old miss 'cause we took a $1.5
- 22:32million bet on Miami about 15 minutes before kick at -3 So the
- 22:37ideal situation would have been Miami by one or two, which there
- 22:41was a shot at if if Ole Miss wouldn't have got the two on
- 22:45their on their last drive, right?
- 22:47Basically the second to last drive.
- 22:49So once they got ahead three, that result probably wasn't
- 22:52going to happen. I mean, the best we could have
- 22:54hoped for was possibly Miami by three in overtime, but didn't
- 22:57happen. So we we lose big on the game,
- 22:59but we do knock out that huge liability in the national
- 23:02championship game. We Fast forward to tonight,
- 23:05Indiana, Oregon feels like that. There's plenty of people that oh
- 23:09Indiana. The way that they played an easy
- 23:11one doesn't matter about laying the points.
- 23:13What do you see in the Beck and betting market and are there
- 23:15some sharps that are on the ducks in this one?
- 23:18Yeah, there are the Publix on Indiana, There's a, there's a,
- 23:24there's a little bit of sharp money.
- 23:25I mean, it's not all the sharps. There's some sharps on Indiana,
- 23:28but more sharps are took 4 and 3 1/2 with Oregon.
- 23:31I grabbed 4 as soon as the number came out just because I
- 23:35thought the number should be 3. I could be wrong.
- 23:37Indiana's done nothing wrong. I mean, I'm just playing the
- 23:42number there. I'm playing the number plus the
- 23:43three. And I think the Oregon defense
- 23:46has gotten better. Will they be able to handle the
- 23:49Indiana offensive line? I know they handled the Texas
- 23:52Tech O line, but Texas Tech had a horrific day offensively.
- 23:56Was that because of the Oregon defense or was that because
- 23:59maybe the Texas Tech offense was overrated?
- 24:01Their defense was so good throughout the year.
- 24:03Their defense for so many turnovers and so many 3
- 24:06announces. They were always playing from
- 24:08ahead and playing on short fields.
- 24:10Maybe they were overvalued, I don't know.
- 24:13I think it'll be a very good game tonight.
- 24:15You're probably seeing the best 2 quarterbacks in college
- 24:17football. So I I would like Indiana to win
- 24:22by three would be perfect because I'd cash my bet and I do
- 24:25want to see Indiana win the national title.
- 24:27Mike, when it when it became apparent to everybody that we're
- 24:30going to get Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, I
- 24:33got to assume this is a pretty popular weekend at circus
- 24:35sports. You guys sold out with wild card
- 24:37weekend and the playoff games last night, tonight culminating
- 24:41on Monday night. Yeah, with the book.
- 24:44The book is completely sold out and about 85 percent, 80% on
- 24:49Monday. Stadium swim sitting around 90
- 24:54to 95% for every day except Monday.
- 24:58So yeah, the hotel sales, I have to tell you though, we didn't
- 25:00fill up for the last couple days.
- 25:02Usually this weekend would have been sold out well in advance,
- 25:05but we, I think Wednesday we we reached sell out.
- 25:08So the hotel pickup was a little slower than anticipated.
- 25:12I love asking you this question when it comes to primetime
- 25:15games, Green Bay, Chicago Oldest Rivalry in the NFL, then Sunday
- 25:19night Chargers, New England and then Monday night the Monday
- 25:22Night Football. Texans and Pittsburgh might
- 25:25tomorrow be the the busiest, but they the most right on Saturday
- 25:29night opposed to Sunday or Monday.
- 25:33Packers. Well, we'll be more than yeah,
- 25:35it'll be more than it'll be more than Monday because there's more
- 25:37going on to have more people around that are betting hockey
- 25:41and NBA and college basketball on Saturday obviously than on
- 25:45Monday. Monday you don't have any top 25
- 25:47matchups. You don't really get into big
- 25:48Monday for a while. So, and I think it will be
- 25:51bigger than Sunday because of the fan bases.
- 25:56You know, you have the New England fan base is is kind of
- 26:00regional and the Chargers don't have a fan base.
- 26:02So and you think about how Midwest we lean with Packers and
- 26:06Bears. Yeah, I for us, I don't think
- 26:09there's any doubt. And of course, we're in Illinois
- 26:12and in Indiana and Iowa and Missouri and we're not in, you
- 26:16know, Massachusetts or New York or California.
- 26:18So I think for us, clearly Saturday night will be the
- 26:20biggest right of the three prime time games.
- 26:23So the betting market has been flip flopping back and forth
- 26:26earlier in the week with the Packers and the Bears.
- 26:28And what are you guys seeing? Is it solidifying?
- 26:30Is this one? And you have to feel this is
- 26:33going to be a teaser league for a lot of league that a lot of
- 26:35people use. Rabin, what's currently the
- 26:37Bears plus 1 1/2, taking them up to 7 1/2, both the market
- 26:41they're going with the Wong teaser with the Bears and what
- 26:44you've seen this weird flip flop back and forth.
- 26:47Yeah, it's pretty much settled at Packers 1 1/2.
- 26:49It's interesting because if you're looking at teaser legs, I
- 26:53don't know if people want to tease the Rams down, you got to
- 26:56use the seven. Or if you want to tease either
- 26:59Buffalo or Jacksonville up, that's a really interesting
- 27:01game. I tend to believe.
- 27:04Maybe not as my I haven't heard one person that likes Buffalo
- 27:07yet, which makes me like Buffalo.
- 27:09You know, it's just when everybody's on one side of a
- 27:11game, it very rarely wins. And maybe that's anecdotal, but
- 27:14I don't think so because it happens in every sport.
- 27:17And the more the world loves a game, the more I hate it.
- 27:19So yeah, it's going to be a very popular teaser.
- 27:22Like because the Bears are at home.
- 27:25I did play the Packers when it got down to pick.
- 27:29I think the Packers have a better defense.
- 27:34And I mean, this is the third time and in what, less than 40
- 27:37days they've met. And you know, the Bears haven't
- 27:40LED one second in regulation in either game.
- 27:42And I thought in the first half of both games the Packers were
- 27:46pretty dominant. So I think the Packers are a
- 27:49little bit better. Bears haven't had a lot of
- 27:51success at home recently in playoff games.
- 27:53And so I could be wrong, and if I'm wrong, I'm happy for the
- 27:56Bears, but I I think the Packers are better.
- 27:59Speaking of Jacksonville, you guys have your exactas out now
- 28:03there's prices are absolutely phenomenal.
- 28:05I know you're going to, you know, repost them at once.
- 28:07We get everything settled this weekend in advance of the
- 28:09divisional round. But if you want a price, you
- 28:11better, you better jump in now. What's the most popular, Mike?
- 28:15Are you seeing a lot of AFC Jacksonville on either either
- 28:18side of Super Bowl exactas at Circa?
- 28:22We are. That's been the most popular bet
- 28:25in the exact is on either side. If you're isolating one team,
- 28:30it's been Jacksonville and then you know what we see?
- 28:33We see a lot of Jacksonville, Seattle, Jacksonville, Rams sort
- 28:37of isolating the NFC West teams. Those are probably the most
- 28:41popular ones involving Jacksonville and Philadelphia
- 28:47continues to sort of really be ignored in the market, even
- 28:49though they're getting bad in the game on Sunday, they're kind
- 28:53of getting ignored in terms of Super Bowl futures.
- 28:56The Jaguars are a team if it was anybody baby than the
- 29:00Jacksonville Jaguars just because of the ineptitude of
- 29:02that organization. Are they the most complete team
- 29:05right now in the AFC? That's an interesting question.
- 29:11The defense has been good all year and and Lawrence and the
- 29:16offense have really come along under Cohen.
- 29:20You know, they blow that what, 19 point fourth quarter lead in
- 29:22Houston and then they haven't had a misstep since.
- 29:26And I have to tell you, the schedule they've beaten has been
- 29:29as has been a very solid schedule.
- 29:31So I mean, I know I get it. You get that.
- 29:34You get to have Tennessee twice, but they beat some very good
- 29:36teams. And the Colts and Houston were
- 29:39both really solid teams in their division.
- 29:41And you know, they beat San Francisco, they beat Kansas City
- 29:45this year. The.
- 29:45Denver SO. If you look, they beat Denver
- 29:49pretty handily in Denver. So there's No Fear for them to
- 29:52go to Denver, right to go to Denver and I guess you know the
- 29:57small market comments sort of field in there.
- 29:59But I will tell you this. If you look statistically at
- 30:03every statistic, Jacksonville is better than Buffalo, I think,
- 30:07except out of adjusted yards per play offensively maybe, but it's
- 30:12just across the board. Every stat is better and and the
- 30:15games to pick. And in fact, in some places,
- 30:17Buffalo is a one point favorite. I think Jacoby Myers trade
- 30:20turned out to be a huge, huge win for Jacksonville.
- 30:23That's what may be the missing piece.
- 30:25Mike, no, you got to run. Thanks for popping on.
- 30:27Appreciate it. Enjoy the weekend.
- 30:28Mike Palm, we will talk to you next week.
- 30:30Thank you, Mike. Thank you so much.
- 30:32Good to talk to you, Mike Baum, VP of operations at Circa
- 30:35Sports. Download the app now.
- 30:36It's Circa Sports. Circa Sports in Iowa and for
- 30:39those of you listening on the other side of the river course,
- 30:42Circa Sports Illinois. So the Big 12 tournament just
- 30:44appeared on our radar. Yes.
- 30:46Seemingly out of nowhere, I'm in.
- 30:47I love going down there. Might take me a while because I
- 30:50believe that's usually the same week that I.
- 30:52Have. Yeah, yeah.
- 30:52Yeah, state basketball, that is happening.
- 30:54But we can always maneuver, figure things out, cobble
- 30:57something together and make that happen.
- 30:59New thing that Circa rolled out last year at Times Circus Most
- 31:03Wanted, where they put together kind of a a parlay every week
- 31:06and you can get a pretty good price on it this week.
- 31:09I had 11. You know why I never go here?
- 31:11Tell me what it? Is it is for the NFL wild card
- 31:14round? Just on the money line, Yeah.
- 31:15You need the Rams, OK, the Packers, all right, The Texans
- 31:20and the Bills to win. So 14. 14 money line parlay and.
- 31:25What will they give you? Plus 575, but unlike other
- 31:29places, you can also bet the no -800 it's a hefty price, but
- 31:35think something's going to happen.
- 31:36Which one of the Which of those four don't you like?
- 31:38The Bills. You know, what about Monday
- 31:40night? Boy, there's a lot of love for
- 31:41the Steelers. There's a ton of love out there
- 31:45for Pittsburgh. Where's that love coming from
- 31:47though? Damn, I mean sharps.
- 31:49Right. Because it's not the betting
- 31:50public. 62% of the money is on the Texans at this point, and
- 31:54I've got to guess that they're going to be the public side
- 31:55going into this one. From the sharp perspective,
- 31:58Pittsburgh at home. DK Metcalf.
- 32:01DK Metcalf coming back. TJ Watt TJ Watt is now back.
- 32:04For playing last week second game.
- 32:05Yeah, something that hasn't happened.
- 32:07And maybe his sea legs back underneath him a little bit more
- 32:10going into that one. A Texans offensive line that
- 32:12stinks. A defense that is still late.
- 32:15Maybe it's taking a small step back here over the last month.
- 32:18Yeah, they were #1 going into Week 18 and they've fallen.
- 32:22So yes, they must have had a. Bad.
- 32:24Now, they also had guys that were not playing in that game, a
- 32:27couple of guys, and when they got the lead, as they took
- 32:29Stroud out, we saw Davis Mills come back into the game.
- 32:32They did the same thing, I think with two defenders of memory
- 32:35serves that came out of that one.
- 32:37Still, even before that, the Colts were going up and down the
- 32:39field against them and that's kind of a little bit when Riley
- 32:42Leonard, Riley Leonard that they were doing that play.
- 32:46I don't know. And Hunter off the edge.
- 32:48Those guys are so elite. They are.
- 32:49I'll tell you, I like to get from Alabama.
- 32:51What's his name, 02020? He's a good player.
- 32:55Speed's a good player. Al Shazir is a good player.
- 32:59And of course, the secondary was Stingley.
- 33:00He's a lead. He might be the best corner in
- 33:02the league, but it's CJ Stroud. Yeah, it's CJ Stroud.
- 33:07In cold weather, I mean, who do you trust more, old Aaron
- 33:10Rodgers? Old Aaron Rodgers.
- 33:12I think so too. I think it's, I think I trust
- 33:14old Aaron Rodgers. I don't want to see Pittsburgh
- 33:16advance. And those three and a halfs that
- 33:18were out there in the beginning of the week, they're not coming
- 33:20back. Are what?
- 33:21What are we at? It's three across the.
- 33:22Board is it? Yeah, I certainly like to do 3
- 33:251/2. Getting that hook I think was
- 33:28incredibly important. There's juice all over the
- 33:30place, but it is 3 flat across the board in that matchup.
- 33:34You know, there was some as we look around here, there were a
- 33:37bunch of 11 starting to pop Rams 11.
- 33:39I don't see one anymore. It's down to 10 tens and a half.
- 33:43It's, I don't see Chicago favorite anywhere anymore.
- 33:48It's a point and a half everywhere for Green Bay.
- 33:50Buffalo's still favoured. That's not true.
- 33:53Their favorite. It's it's back and forth.
- 33:54There's a couple of DraftKings and FanDuel have Buffalo
- 33:57favoured. It's a pick at Circa.
- 33:59It's a pick at the Super Book. It's a pick at South Point.
- 34:04The one line that's kind of got away is Philadelphia, right?
- 34:06Well, it's coming back a little bit.
- 34:08There's a 4 1/2 out there in the market.
- 34:10There's some five and a halfs too.
- 34:11There are. And you're on the Niners.
- 34:14I'm on the Niners. I need a better injury report
- 34:18for the Niners than what we see at this point.
- 34:22I'm just, I'm so ready for tomorrow night.
- 34:24I bet right as a as a Packers fan.
- 34:27No, Bear, as a Packer hater, don't put that grossness on me.
- 34:31Yeah, yeah, yeah. Don't put that ugly, ugly John
- 34:35Deere colors on me. Yuck.
- 34:36Get that stuff away. I look at this game so many
- 34:40different ways. The football side of it.
- 34:43The Packers are better. They are.
- 34:45They showed it, yes. Do the Bears need something
- 34:48goofy again? Well.
- 34:49That's what the whole season's been like that, though.
- 34:51It needs another one of those and not the 9% she is of getting
- 34:55an onside kick and getting an onside kick, but a pick, 6A
- 34:59short field, a defensive score. They can't be, I think even even
- 35:04in the turnover and think they're going to win this game,
- 35:07gonna be plus on that side. Santos has been good.
- 35:09I know you know you were never a big fan, but he's good for. 36
- 35:12in but. No, he's got some.
- 35:14He's got his card this year, but he's been pretty accurate.
- 35:17And I, you know what? At this point, I don't trust
- 35:19Brandon McManus. No, absolutely.
- 35:22I think maybe an edge there. Watch Santos miss first couple
- 35:25of field goals. Another doink.
- 35:27Double doink. Oh, my God, that's all you guys
- 35:29need. Come back.
- 35:30We'll finish out the program. Miller and Condon, we're glad
- 35:33you're with us as we talk sports with you and do so every Monday
- 35:35through Friday from noon until 2 on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 35:38Network. Hi Miller and Condon, welcome
- 35:40back Iowa sports radio network Des Moines sports station one O
- 35:446.3 KXNO the Iowa State Oklahoma State point spread posted as
- 35:51within the last half hour at a couple of places 18 1/2 nineteen
- 35:56if you're a DraftKings customer and you like Iowa State's got
- 35:59like 19 1/2. Meanwhile at FanDuel, just 18
- 36:041/2. Caesar's 19.
- 36:05So it's right in that ballpark. 18 and a half 1919 1/2 three
- 36:09o'clock tip for that one. And then Sunday Illinois invades
- 36:13Carver Hawka. What's the what's the tenants
- 36:16going to be like on Sunday? Sunday morning 11:00.
- 36:19I think they're going to push closer to a sellout.
- 36:21I don't think they're going to get there so.
- 36:23They'll beat last week's number. Yes.
- 36:25Which was what, 12 and change? It was, I had assistant coach
- 36:28Bryson Williams on the Locked On podcast today and locked on
- 36:32Hawkeyes and he mentioned to me before we went on, they're ahead
- 36:36of the pace they were earlier in the week that they were the week
- 36:39before with the UCLA game. So yeah, they're hoping they're
- 36:41going to push past that number and get close to a sellout.
- 36:44It's been a couple of years since they're don't think
- 36:45they're going to get quite there, but 13,000 plus maybe
- 36:48approaching 14,000. I think the range there'll be
- 36:51plenty of orange in there, as there usually is, and hopefully
- 36:54the Orange Crush will not make their way there.
- 36:56Yeah, really. What's the size, dude?
- 36:58How much does that worry you? Because Illinois, as Tom said,
- 37:01they're a very big team. Not as much as it did coming
- 37:04into the season. I was been better than I thought
- 37:06they'd been on the boards. I think that, not that they're
- 37:09going to win it, but there's been a couple of times that
- 37:11they've been around there, right?
- 37:14I think one thing and talking to Coach Williams today is they're
- 37:19just trying to figure out about the whistle now.
- 37:22It's been on the road the three games, but they played Iowa
- 37:27State, Michigan State and Minnesota under Nico Medved. 3
- 37:31teams that it's not frame Mccaffrey's defenses, 3 very
- 37:34physical teams and just figuring out what it is.
- 37:38I mean, you have to start teaching your guys, throw your
- 37:41head back, which I hate. Me too.
- 37:43The throw the head back thing is one of the worst things that
- 37:45have happened in basketball. Yep, without a doubt.
- 37:47James Harden started it and it absolutely drives me crazy and.
- 37:53I think that might bug me more than than Aaron White did with
- 37:55his embellishment when. He Oh, absolutely.
- 37:57I mean, this is so much. I agree with you.
- 37:58This is egregious. This is.
- 38:00Yeah, this. Is you get bumped, you throw
- 38:01your head back right? I hate it.
- 38:02Yeah, I do too. But maybe that's what.
- 38:05You have to do to buy. They're buying.
- 38:06It yes, absolutely. And officials are going to do
- 38:08that. If I would get to the free throw
- 38:11line though 2530 times like most home teams do yeah, I think
- 38:15they'll get it done. I do.
- 38:16I don't think that. How many did they shoot?
- 38:18Against UCLA, do you remember? I don't more because they're
- 38:21home. Yeah.
- 38:23It shouldn't be the gap that. We But that's the way it is.
- 38:24It's always been this way in the Big 10 life.
- 38:26In the not just Big 10, no, I know Missouri Valley, Big 12,
- 38:30Horizon League, doesn't matter what league, that's just.
- 38:32Life on the road. Life on the road.
- 38:35All right, we shall see. Good stuff.
- 38:36All right, Well, enjoy all the football tomorrow.
- 38:39Good luck to your Bears. They need it.
- 38:41What's the total? I forgot to look at that with
- 38:43the with the weather, because the weather's not supposed to be
- 38:45the greatest. I mean, the high during the day
- 38:46is 35 and it's going to be rain and snow potentially.
- 38:50Yes, now sometimes, as long as there's not wind, that actually
- 38:54helps the total. I do have a couple plays, by the
- 38:56way, presented by Circa Sports for tonight for basketball 1
- 38:59Minnesota -3 1/2 and of course, my Oregon bet plus 3 1/2.
- 39:03And how about this on the Circa Sports Iowa App?
- 39:06College wrestling. Give me the Badgers getting 33
- 39:10against the Hawkeyes tonight in Big 10 wrestling action.
- 39:13That's good. I we'll have to ask them like
- 39:15next time we speak of them, just how much they're seeing.
- 39:18Is it growing like it did when they first started to introduce
- 39:21it? That's going to do it for us.
- 39:22Appreciate you being with us. Miller and Condon talk sports
- 39:25with you every Monday through Friday from noon until 2 on A
- 39:28Moines sports station, One O 6.3, KXNO and the Iowa Sports
