- 0:07Welcome back to another edition of the Justin Time Podcast.
- 0:10I'm your host, Justin, and with me is.
- 0:12Will what's going on? What's going on?
- 0:16And. Powered by Riverside FM.
- 0:20Come on, brother. You was you showing you showing
- 0:22me showing me around with that stuff.
- 0:24Really. Yeah.
- 0:25I had an extra element. I love that.
- 0:28Hey Riverside plug, this bugged the show.
- 0:31Real sad but but you do stuff. Today we have we're going to be
- 0:38talking about transfer portal for ILSU Tigers and then hit a
- 0:45little bit on the World Series and Oklahoma Sooners and we will
- 0:52talk about the new changes they laying out for the MLB draft and
- 1:00see where that goes. But.
- 1:01Yeah, I got a lot of stuff to talk of, like as far as like the
- 1:04College Cosworld series, you know, I made a post on Reddit,
- 1:08you know, a lot of people weren't too happy about it, but
- 1:10you know, people are miserable. Some people are unfortunately
- 1:13miserable so. What did you put that you want
- 1:16an Arkansas to win or Kansas? Well, and they jump down your
- 1:20throat. So like, as you know, we had you
- 1:24and I had talked about previously, first and foremost,
- 1:26shout out to the to Oklahoma for when I think it's their third in
- 1:29program history. So shout out to the program.
- 1:32So yesterday I well, it was a Monday night, but just I put on
- 1:37the college baseball Reddit, you know, make that seven 90s in the
- 1:40row for the SEC and really it's like 8-9 years.
- 1:44You know, outside of like it's for the one that beat us in 17.
- 1:49It would have been nine in a row fortunate for Arkansas.
- 1:51I didn't finish to finish it off.
- 1:54But you know, a lot of people weren't too, a lot of people had
- 1:57a lot of the exceptions to that because, you know, just I'll
- 2:01read you a few comments real quick.
- 2:03Let's see if I can get to, you know, a lot of people I was
- 2:05saying like, you know, just, you know, I've always, you know,
- 2:10even though I don't like when SEC teams beat us, I would much
- 2:14rather see SEC team win the championships because like it's
- 2:18just go is just another example of we have the preeminent
- 2:22conference. Exactly.
- 2:24And if you think about it, you know this looks better for LSU.
- 2:28Yes. That Oklahoma won it because we
- 2:31split the series in was a botched double play away and
- 2:36keeping Gavin Guidry in just a little too long away from taking
- 2:40the series from the would be national champions.
- 2:42And Cason Evans also showed us what he can do.
- 2:45And now that performance that we gave him, the performance of the
- 2:48year looks even better with him because Oklahoma was a national
- 2:55champion and what he did in that lineup to that lineup.
- 3:01And also gives me more hope for Devin Sheeran coming up because
- 3:06he shut him out and when we eliminated them from the SEC
- 3:12tournament. You're right.
- 3:13And The thing is like The thing is and like, like to your point
- 3:18is just, I mean, we had a lot of people talk about, well, y'all,
- 3:22you guys keep saying they're the most talented team.
- 3:24A lot of LSU fans were upset about that.
- 3:26Just like, well, when the winds weren't acquainted.
- 3:28Yeah, I understand when is the production ultimately matters,
- 3:31but you can't sit here and tell me we didn't have talent.
- 3:35You know, it just didn't come together on a consistent basis.
- 3:38You know, I looking to decide. You know, when I made this post,
- 3:41you know, it said a lot. A lot of fans that are support
- 3:47other conferences and programs, they don't understand the
- 3:50concept about us. Not it's not about us like me
- 3:53being so obsessed with other teams in my conference.
- 3:57It's just I because we have like, I don't like them beating
- 4:00us. You know, we always say like,
- 4:03you know, I always said before about when Alabama was running,
- 4:06you know, was on their football tear with during Nick Saban's
- 4:10era. I always said the fact that I, I
- 4:13ultimately respect him because people here in Louisiana, a lot
- 4:17of people, they just supported them because they hate LSU.
- 4:20They have no really knowledge of the sport.
- 4:23They don't keep up with recruiting.
- 4:24They don't keep up with the history.
- 4:26They just hate LSU. But see, I, I ultimately just
- 4:29support the conference because if I'm a lose to anybody, I'd
- 4:32rather lose to somebody from the best conference.
- 4:34But I see a lot of these comments saying like I could
- 4:36never support or be a fan of a team in my conference and stuff
- 4:40like that. I said, listen, it's not about
- 4:42being a fan of those teams. I'm not a Florida fan.
- 4:45I'm not a Bama fan of Arkansas. I'm not a.
- 4:47Look, I just hate Florida, but. Yeah, it's but that's the thing.
- 4:53That's my thing is listen, as much as you guys talk trash
- 4:57about the SEC in every sport, I I love to see when y'all get
- 5:01exposed on the biggest stage because you guys you guys are
- 5:04obsessed. You guys are the one that's
- 5:05really obsessed with the conference.
- 5:07And like somebody comment on the my post said who cares?
- 5:10I said clearly you do because you commented.
- 5:13Yeah, so it was. Just like first and foremost and
- 5:16like and I was saying like a Georgia Bulldogs person said
- 5:19like, wait, how does this post equate to support the headlines?
- 5:22Just a fact. I see no celebration.
- 5:24I just said like, listen, these guys are just miserable.
- 5:26Some Virginia Cavaliers post say like how a bunch of cold, a
- 5:30bunch of miserable losers like us here in the SEC, we don't
- 5:33lose. We want 7 as in a row guy who
- 5:36just made the posters point. I said, listen, like I said, you
- 5:38guys are miserable. Yeah, you guys are absolutely
- 5:41miserable. And like, I mean, it's just, but
- 5:44they just don't understand that concept clearly, you know, just.
- 5:51Just the point just on there was a post made and I can't find it
- 5:56for the life of me about SEC teams winning in the major 3
- 6:03sports, football, baseball and basketball since 2000 and it is
- 6:10on there multiple Times Now. Take it.
- 6:14Oklahoma and Texas are on there too and they weren't in the SEC
- 6:17when they win those championships.
- 6:20But you know what, they're here now.
- 6:22So we claim and. That and that's and that's
- 6:25that's and that's another point with the tag because so they had
- 6:28a Texas fan just if I could pull it up, but he was just saying
- 6:33the exact same thing or and same thing with Oklahoma and stuff
- 6:36like that So it was not really like ACC school.
- 6:38I said listen, it's been 2 years brother, like you all in it just
- 6:43like business is business, see and this is what it is like
- 6:46your, your beloved school joined the conference, Yeah, like and.
- 6:49Look, it's all about. It's about it's money.
- 6:52That's. That's what it is, but it's also
- 6:55Kyle Peterson and Chris Burke and them were talking about on
- 6:59Monday night. You know, what could these other
- 7:03conferences do to catch up to the SEC?
- 7:07Is there any way they can catch up to the SEC?
- 7:09The SEC is running it, you know, and they were saying, look, you
- 7:14can talk about the money in all of this, but Oklahoma is on the
- 7:20lower side of the NIL money deal with college baseball.
- 7:25Yeah, good point. It's.
- 7:26Just that the SEC puts more into college baseball than any other
- 7:30conference because they know it's important you know it.
- 7:34Is but, but it's like they don't understand those concepts
- 7:37because they they just hate the conference all together and they
- 7:40mock the conference. But listen, the results are
- 7:43there. They have a Florida State fans
- 7:44say like there are generally more comments and posts about
- 7:47the SEC winning and Oklahoma winning who has been in the
- 7:51conference for like 3 years. It must be exhausting being in
- 7:54two Colts at the same time. I just said loli said listen
- 7:58y'all just again, y'all just miserable because you guys play
- 8:00in a big conference and you guys can't get it done.
- 8:03Yeah. What like what else do?
- 8:04What else do you need to see like?
- 8:06Do you know the only other? Yeah, you know, the only other
- 8:08team that has been to Omaha more times than North Carolina
- 8:11without winning it who they are. Well, not our Kansas, but yeah.
- 8:18But Florida State actually has more.
- 8:20That's true, yeah. College.
- 8:22World Series appearances without winning the national
- 8:24championship than it I think any other school is what they were
- 8:28saying. Yeah, that you're right because
- 8:29my Co worker just tell me about that yesterday.
- 8:32Yeah, so let them Florida State fans talk.
- 8:35Let them ACC fans talk. Miserable.
- 8:39It's like yellow miserable, yellow obsessed with the SCC as
- 8:43I just pray you do get healed. I just pray that the Lord heals
- 8:45you. If y'all y'all need it, it is
- 8:47well. They can't beat us and they
- 8:49can't join us, so that's why they hate me.
- 8:53Man, that's this laugh. They hate me from outside of the
- 8:56club. That's it.
- 8:59And they can't. Get in.
- 9:02And I'm thinking I was like, you know, because it was like
- 9:06instead of being on my under my comments, talk to your school
- 9:09about getting some more money because like you got, you have a
- 9:11situation with your football coach who I respect.
- 9:14I mean, but they were they were trying to get rid of like focus
- 9:17on the priority. That nursing home they went.
- 9:20Remember when we talked about them in a nursing home a couple
- 9:22of months ago? Yeah, I've got one thing for
- 9:26y'all. Man, but I just I just wanted to
- 9:28bring that up. It's just like it's just the
- 9:29same. I like what else do y'all need
- 9:31to see at this point, bro? It like you said, it's going to
- 9:33your point real quick. Just it's about people talking
- 9:36about money. It's about ultimately about
- 9:38priority because I believe schools have nothing but money
- 9:42and endowments, but they don't prioritize athletics like other
- 9:45schools do. And that's totally fine.
- 9:47But they don't complain about it because that's their identity.
- 9:50But see, so it's just like, but but just to bring that point up,
- 9:53just ultimately at the end of the day is about college sports
- 9:57is about priority in a pro sports about parity, college
- 10:01sports about priority. You know, and I think that's a
- 10:04perfect transition and what we wanted to talk about in this.
- 10:07Yes, Sir. So.
- 10:10There you go. And we're going to go right into
- 10:12talking about the new proposed MLB rules that'll try to help
- 10:18the college game, in my opinion. Yeah, for sure.
- 10:21You know, so they got this rule now where they want to change
- 10:28the draft eligible age to 20, which would have sent guys like
- 10:32Colt Emerson, Max Clark, Thomas White.
- 10:37Yep. Walter Jenkins, Bryce Rayner and
- 10:41Connor Griffin would be at LSU instead of the Pirates right
- 10:44now. Yeah.
- 10:46You know, television ratings would probably climb up because
- 10:49you get to watch those guys for two years at least, maybe 3.
- 10:55You know, hopefully college baseball attendance, you know,
- 11:00for LSU that's up every year and for SEC schools.
- 11:04Hate to harp on the SEC Ness of it all, but.
- 11:07Don't, don't, don't. They'll be all right.
- 11:08You know, SEC normally brings in a lot of baseball.
- 11:11Fans, if you build it, they will come brother.
- 11:13Some of the. Biggest baseball college
- 11:15baseball stadiums I've seen are in the SEC.
- 11:18That's another point somebody made in the comedy were
- 11:21complaining about like, but you got these big league state.
- 11:23I said, brother, it's college is about business is about money.
- 11:27Like just and it's like it's about business.
- 11:30You guys are so caught up in all this other stuff and like,
- 11:34brother, it's ultimately about the dollars.
- 11:36That'll say like the the pattern tree doesn't have value, but
- 11:40first and before anything else is money.
- 11:43You don't just magically get there just because I have LSU on
- 11:47my name tag. Well, after all, at work they
- 11:50put it in the 90s. LSU just brings in a bunch of
- 11:53money because they're LSU. Yeah.
- 11:56And that's The thing is it's like, I mean that like just we,
- 11:59we because we talked about this last year, reading the book,
- 12:01Skip Berber's book, like in the mid 80s, like this is not LSU,
- 12:05not where it is. They weren't back then.
- 12:07They weren't where they are today.
- 12:09Somebody had to build it. Somebody had to prioritize.
- 12:12That's the whole point. But you're not to get off the
- 12:13beauty paths. I'm sorry.
- 12:15No, you're good. It just is a good point, you
- 12:18know, So you know, that's the rule changes.
- 12:21Oh, and unlimited undrafted free agent signings, tradable draft
- 12:27picks in mandatory combines for medical evaluations or added in
- 12:33this proposal. Wow, that's good.
- 12:36Basically what the MLB is trying to do is have the draft where
- 12:44now these, the best amateur players can play in college.
- 12:51They'll have a draft be kind of like the NFL and NBA drafts
- 12:56where they can enjoy their college careers and then get
- 12:59into the professional. Yeah.
- 13:00And like you said before we went on and just I feel like it's be
- 13:04multi beneficial for both sides. You know, just like there's a
- 13:08lot of people talk about a lot of people don't like change,
- 13:11especially in the college landscape.
- 13:13And I'm not going to sit here and tell you it's a perfect
- 13:14system. None of it's perfect right now,
- 13:16but that's a whole other topic. But just you want we all, you
- 13:20and I, we always talk about, you know, this is America's pastime,
- 13:23baseball's America's pastime. And it's not reflected at the
- 13:26college level historically. But even with all the great
- 13:29programs we have, it's just not going to do the numbers.
- 13:32It's not even hardly on TV until the tournament, right?
- 13:36So, so it's just like if you have the continuity with like
- 13:40people staying in college, the pro players get more the pro
- 13:44leagues, they have a more polished product more time than
- 13:47not. Now to say all these guys are
- 13:49going to be all, all like all world players in the pros, but
- 13:53just feel like you have a more polished product.
- 13:56I know that the college, the college basketball, you know,
- 13:58for 20 years, you know, one and done era.
- 14:00So it's still 1 and done, but at least more you have more
- 14:03experienced players. Like this year, the NBA draft
- 14:06took place yesterday, just like just the first round.
- 14:09This was like the most celebrated draft board in like
- 14:12several years, in numerous years because like a lot of these
- 14:15guys, they were all, not only were they top talent, but
- 14:18there's a lot of experienced guys that were more polished
- 14:20because even though they transferred different to
- 14:23multiple places, you were in college, the college landscape
- 14:27longer. Yeah, and it this article says
- 14:30why is this proposed now? And it just points to the thing
- 14:34where college baseball has dramatically changed over the
- 14:37last decade. That's right.
- 14:40Top programs have pitching and hitting labs, and, you know,
- 14:45it's got LSU listed as as got Schools listed as LSU.
- 14:50Georgia, Wake Forest, Oregon State, North Carolina and Ohio
- 14:54State have embraced player tracking systems, bio mechanics,
- 14:59backtracking, force plates and advanced pitch design enveloped
- 15:03in their development of these players.
- 15:05You know, yeah. So I think personally this will
- 15:09get past, you know. Yeah.
- 15:14I don't think should I think for the overall game of baseball
- 15:18this is the way to go and I think the rules coming up for
- 15:23transfer Portal that they're trying to get past will also
- 15:27help keep these players in one place.
- 15:31Yeah. You know what, the only thing I
- 15:34can see, the only knock against it that I can see is unlike the
- 15:37NFL, in the NBA, baseball has the most opportunity for drafted
- 15:45players. Yeah, just the farm system and
- 15:48stuff like that, which I always love, which I always love.
- 15:51I always like the now the NBA, the G League, but it's not like
- 15:56the D league, the development league in the NBA is not as
- 15:59versed and deep as obviously baseball farm systems.
- 16:03That's one thing I always appreciate about baseball is
- 16:05like more multiple avenues just to really just to get in the
- 16:08door and the and the big show. So.
- 16:11Yeah. But see, I also don't think that
- 16:14it's going to necessarily hurt it.
- 16:16You still have the same players that are in the farm system
- 16:19right now and you still have the ability to sign undrafted free
- 16:24agents to the farm systems, you know, But I think a shorter
- 16:30draft by rounds along with making high school players go to
- 16:34college is just the best thing all around for the game.
- 16:39Like you said, ESPN doesn't cover it nearly enough.
- 16:43I mean, they have it on that ESPN app and everything for you
- 16:46to watch it every game. But as it being on a major
- 16:52channel, it's not always on, you know.
- 16:57But, you know, I think this will be a good thing.
- 17:00It'll put more coverage on baseball that we've already
- 17:03started this year with the Diamond Sports app.
- 17:06Yep. That's right.
- 17:07And like, you know, guys very big on that.
- 17:09Yeah, they've done incredible job.
- 17:10Those guys have done an incredible job.
- 17:12They even have it to where you can track the summer ball
- 17:15leagues. Yeah, it's amazing, man.
- 17:19You know, one thing I would like for them to do is to continue it
- 17:24and make it a year round thing and post news stories on.
- 17:29And you know how LSU does those, those scrimmages, not
- 17:34intramural, but the scrimmages, those exhibition games during
- 17:38the fall, if they would cover the exhibition games in the
- 17:42fall, you know, but also something they did and this is
- 17:47another good transition is they have a transfer portal tracker
- 17:53now. Yeah, that's right.
- 17:56So to close out the show, this show, I would like to hit on the
- 18:02transfer portal. So LSU's lost.
- 18:06LSU's lost seven guys in the portal so far with Maverick
- 18:10Rizzi. He's the only one who's actually
- 18:12committed at the moment to Ole Miss.
- 18:14We are losing Trent Carraway, Jaden New DJ Primo, Daniel
- 18:18Harding, Ethan Klaus and John Shadar.
- 18:25I don't know, never heard of him.
- 18:27I don't think he's popped up this season.
- 18:28We are getting Landon Hood who finished with 78 KS this year.
- 18:35His ERA was 248 and he's got a three in one record.
- 18:39He gave up 15 earned runs in those 54 innings pitched.
- 18:44You know he's walked 21, which isn't bad.
- 18:48He's fielding perfectly with two attempts, which is something was
- 18:51much welcomed and appreciated. LSU at the moment.
- 18:57Then we have Bino Waters. He batted 362.
- 19:02Ten home runs, 51 RB is his fielding percentage, 967.
- 19:09He committed 2 errors. That's not terrible.
- 19:12We can work on that. Kate Curlin from Florida, he's a
- 19:18listed as a second baseman. He hit 279, nine home runs, 33
- 19:24RBIs. His fielding fielding percentage
- 19:29is 994. He made one error.
- 19:33I like those numbers. Let's see.
- 19:35I got it pulled over here too. You got Diego Vasquez or what?
- 19:43I'm sorry if I butchered that last name.
- 19:46Velazquez, Velazquez. Velazquez.
- 19:50Got an all around player here. He batted 167 with one RBI, 426
- 19:57ERA, 5 and 134 KS. He walked nine and gave up 15
- 20:03earned runs. Fielding percentage.
- 20:05But he's a pitcher so I'll give him.
- 20:07I'll give him. It is 9. 52 Let's see, Jason
- 20:15Walsh from Tulane is an outfielder.
- 20:18Batted 327 with nine home runs and 54 RBI.
- 20:23This is where we need to work on a little bit.
- 20:26He's building percentage was 963 and he had three errors as an
- 20:29outfielder. We can't be having that, but
- 20:32they can work on that. Yeah, that can be polished up.
- 20:34Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:35I just like, you know, we talked about, you know, Jay, Jay wastes
- 20:38no time in the offseason, especially like, you know, this
- 20:41is he's been on a tear, especially since they had seen
- 20:44they ended normal earlier than normal.
- 20:46So you've been on a tear. So, I mean, I had not committed
- 20:49for really getting after it. And we stand.
- 20:51We got one more Dawson Park from Texas State battered 3 O one
- 20:58with 13 home runs and 52 RB OS and a fielding percentage of 987
- 21:04with three errors. That's not bad.
- 21:07I like it. See all these other guys is to
- 21:10sit there and straight tell you that and not talk about our
- 21:14underlying issue from this year. They'll just tell you their
- 21:17offensive numbers and stuff. We got to tell you their
- 21:19defensive numbers because at this point that's what matters
- 21:23most is defence. Yeah, there there's a, it's a
- 21:26defensive sport. As I always say, it's a
- 21:29defensive sport. Like I'm an offensive guy.
- 21:31But I mean, baseball is uniquely structured on the defensive side
- 21:34of the. Ball.
- 21:34I mean, look at it this, look at it this year, how many games did
- 21:37we score? 8 to 10 runs a game is still
- 21:42lost. More than ever.
- 21:46Because we couldn't field the ball, you know?
- 21:50But more pressure on the pitcher Extend the innings.
- 21:53Yes, it's a bad formula. I can see, OK, this is just me
- 21:58this year for next year, I can see our infield looking like
- 22:04Mason Braun at first. Either Rucker at second, Milan's
- 22:09going to be your shortstop, yes, then either curling at 3rd or at
- 22:152nd and Rucker at 3rd instead, or Pearson being at 3rd.
- 22:20But I could also see Pearson being moved to the outfield.
- 22:26Yeah, because I know like he really settled in that third, in
- 22:29that third base spot down the stretch.
- 22:31Yeah, yeah, is what you get, get the elite fielders on as much as
- 22:36possible. So like just yeah, I think I'll
- 22:40just whatever you can do to get the elite defense on the field.
- 22:43Can you? Do that and you know, since we
- 22:46don't know who that last pitcher is because I don't think he's
- 22:48pitched the game at LSU. We're losing 6 and we brought
- 22:526IN. You know, we are losing a lot of
- 22:54pitching and I think we only brought in two pitchers.
- 22:57But we do have that guy, that guy that declared he was coming
- 23:01out, he took his name out of draft and he's coming to LSU.
- 23:05That's the pitcher. So we should be good on the
- 23:07pitching standpoint. But you know, Jay loves his left
- 23:10handers and I think we need a few more left handers and a few
- 23:12more left-handed bats in the lineup.
- 23:14And you know. That's a cool man right there
- 23:17and with. As far as Curiel goes, who knows
- 23:19what's going to happen with him? Yeah.
- 23:22You know, the only thing to going back to the potential
- 23:25draft changes is if there was 12 rounds and no high school
- 23:30players in the draft this year. Yeah.
- 23:35He would definitely be going, but with the inclusion of high
- 23:43school players, if he doesn't go in the first round, which there
- 23:46was a You never know how these things are going.
- 23:48You are going to go, yeah, you know, you might think you're a
- 23:52first rounder, but these teams might want, let's get this high
- 23:56school kid. You know, that happened last
- 23:59year with Kate Anderson. We all thought he was going one.
- 24:02I think he went like 5. Yeah, I think, yeah, I was.
- 24:05I was just thinking that. Let me.
- 24:08Let's see. Think it was third I think.
- 24:12It might have been. I thought, I thought it was,
- 24:15yeah. Third overall, because they're
- 24:16like high school? Possibly, yeah.
- 24:18Yeah, it was just, you know, he went, but he went.
- 24:22Lower I thought I was as a foreground conclusion he'd be #1
- 24:25And that's yeah. But that so you never know what
- 24:28these teams need, you know, who never know how these agents act.
- 24:32And do some of these agents act in the best interest of their
- 24:35players, you know? Right.
- 24:38So who knows what's going on, but that'll do it from us will.
- 24:46Do you have any Closings? You know, I'm just like, you
- 24:49know, just great episode as always, brother.
- 24:52You know, just I'm eager to see what how this rest is offseason
