- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: My name is Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: And Tristan, it was a uh a tough Saturday.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Man, it really felt like we were on a roller coaster to say the least.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Uh, there's good, there was bad, there was heartbreak.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Uh it might as well uh have been a soap soap opera, you know, so that's uh madness.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, border bordering the uh TCU 2015 game and the 2016 OU game in terms of heartbreak, it's it's right up there with it, this this Texas game this past Saturday.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: So um a lot of Red Raider fans were disappointed as they should be, but I think there was a lot of positive that came out of this game.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: And I know some of y'all aren't gonna want to hear that right now.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: They're just gonna, you know, be be upset about you know losing to Texas, but they're really this team showed a lot of fight.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: And man, after that Houston Baptist game, I did not see that coming.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, man.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: If I can give my initial reaction, it's absolutely crushed.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Right after the postgame, you know, I you you can't not be in the dumps after that.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: You know, I was I was really bummed out that we didn't pull out what was clearly a W that we had in our hands that we just dropped.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, the the worst one of the worst parts about being a Texas Tech fan is I went into this expecting an L, keeping my expectations in check.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: You know, I I was expecting us to be competitive, but I wasn't ex I did not write W on this.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I both we both had that.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: We both had that because uh, you know, our score predictions were uh you know similar to each other.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: It was like 48, 35 Texas.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: That was like, you know, 52, 39 Texas.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: So we we had, you know, uh we thought Texas was gonna win, but you know, this blew our what even what we expected out of the water.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: And that that's just the funny thing about tech is you know, it'll rope you in so close, get your hopes up so high, only to be sledgehammered.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: So I'm just thankful that we wait two days to record these episodes to kind of clear your head uh and kind of get the emotional part out of it.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Um, like you said, I even have it in my notes that I haven't felt this way since the 2015 TCU game with that crushing lucky catch at the end.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Um so that's that's where I'm at with the initial reaction.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: What's your initial reaction from this game?
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: Um so initial reaction after the game was pure sadness.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: I turned off the TV and I would I went upstairs and I just sat in darkness for you know about an hour or two.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: Uh but you know, when I woke up in the morning and I watched uh the highlights again just for to make notes for this episode, I just thought, you know, man, our team, we we really cleaned up a lot of stuff from that first week.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: Um we we still made some boneheaded mistakes, but you know, we we belong.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: And and that's what I said on last week's podcast.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: I was like, you know, when I was doing Song of the Week, I was like, give me one reason to believe in this team.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: And they gave me a few reasons.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: They really did, because we should have won that game, and you know, that that sucks, that part of it sucks, but the good part of it is that we totally belong with the rest of this, the rest of this league.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: That's a great statement.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: You know, for a while it's felt like we haven't had the gameplay to show that we belong in the Big 12, uh, with the between our defense or our uh mistakes on the offensive side of the ball.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: It shows oftentimes that you know while it kind of shows why we keep ending up in the basement of this conference.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: But and we've been looking for a reason to believe that we can claw our way out.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: And I like your statement there.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: I think that if if we're gonna start, it looks like Saturday was a good place to uh kind of begin to think that maybe we can get back into the top half where we belong.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Well, and that's another thing.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: Uh when we're talking about the the other two games that we mentioned, the TCU game in 2015 and the OU game in 2016, uh, both of those were losses at home, but they were later in the year.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: That's the thing.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: Like that we we had this heartbreak happen, you know, we didn't want it to happen, but it happened the second game of the season.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: So we there's a lot of season left, guys.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Like we have eight more games plus whatever they choose to do with the bowl.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: Uh, and you know, we have a lot of things that we can clean up, but we also have a lot of time to do that.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Excellent point, man.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Uh, but unfortunately, it's still a gut-wrenching loss.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I I do definitely want to touch on the cons of the loss before we just go full-blown rosies and daisies.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Uh, it's the fact of the matter is, uh also at the end of the day, is that this is another close loss that is par for the course.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Um, of the last eight losses in the Big 12, five have been by one possession.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: And I really cannot recall in my time as a tech fan uh the last time tech won in overtime.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, it's been it's been a long time.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: Uh, and we gotta start.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: If we're gonna change, you know, the the culture of this program, we have to start winning a couple of these games.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: And that's what makes each one of these losses more, you know, more sad and more heartbreaking, because it's like, man, we just need one.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: And if we had that early in the season, all of our dudes would have been behind the program.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: You know, we probably would have finished, you know, pretty good.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: And we still have a chance to finish pretty good.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: Um, but there's definitely some things that went wrong this game, and I think we can start with that.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: Um turnovers uh was probably the biggest, uh at least the uh the thing that hopped out to me most, because they they both have but I'm not gonna count the third turnover because that was kind of a desperation play at the end of the game.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: But the the first two turnovers, the first two interceptions by Alan Bowman were absolutely horrendous.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: There's really no other word for it.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Uh I don't I think the worst part about them was yes, uh just very poor throw from a just a QB fundamental.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Um, but the worst part about this was these occurred right after game-defining moments, like both of them without they they couldn't have come at a worse time.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, honest to God.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: That that the the first turnover came after uh Trey Wolf made his Pat McAfee moment and got that onside kick, kicked it by himself, recovered it by himself.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: Unbelievable play.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: You hardly ever see that in football, not just college football, in football.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: You hardly see that play.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: And Wells, you got I love the call from Wells to get our momentum in it and to try this whole thing, and it worked out beautifully.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: And then what two seconds later, Bowman throws into double coverage deep.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: I it just and a horrible throw.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, horribly underthrown.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: That could have been a moment where we really took the game into our hands because you love to see those big, competent play calls out of the coaches, especially whenever you're playing your biggest rival.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: You know, you really want to set the tone that it's kind of like an all-risk, high, high risk, high reward um kind of game, which you which it should be, which is how you should be treating it whenever you're playing an in-state rival in one that's a powerhouse like Texas, and that's expecting a lot out of their season.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: So I love that, like you said.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: And then just the momentum is completely deflated and goes completely in their direction.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Like UT got to take their go and do what they wanted with the game at that point.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: So it it it just he's Alan Bowman was a superstar, but uh, and then he turns into uh just our worst nightmare on offense.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's a new nickname we thought of as a Sourpatch kid for Alan Bowman because he's very very sweet and very sour at the same time.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, some of these plays you just you're like, what was going through your mind when you chose to do that?
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: But also, he had an extreme number of great touchdown passes this game.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, the one to Vasher, where only he could have got it, diving.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: I mean, and then the free play to Ezukama was another fantastic throw.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: And it's like, how can you do that and then throw, throw the kind of passes on those turnovers?
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: I just don't I just don't understand.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: To me, it's not a lack of ability in Alan Bowman.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: I think the kid is obviously a natural born quarterback, I think it was just a mental break.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: I feel like the game kind of got ahead of him with from because they both came off of humongous moments.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: And I think he just kind of like had a mental break and kind of got ahead of himself, you know.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: And rather than settling down and playing his game, he got he got carried away.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: And that's what I saw.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: Like I said, I don't think it's from a lack of ability.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: I don't think he he has he lacks the ability to throw those kinds of passes and make the right decisions.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: It just I think he kind of mentally broke.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think I mean really you couldn't have scripted a worse time to throw both of these interceptions, the second one coming off the block punt, and all of a sudden we're in the red zone again, and it's like, okay, now we can take the lead, and then all and then 70-yard interception return, and uh they went down and scored, and you know, we we eventually came back from from both of those moments.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: That's the thing about this game, is we came back from two major mistakes that not a lot of teams would have come back from.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: So I I the thing about Bowman in this game, he was he had some horrible, horrible mistakes, but that second half, it really took some mental, mental toughness because going into the into halftime, I was like, this dude may be broken.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: Like they didn't choose to run a play, you know, the last couple minutes of the half and just decided to end it and go into the second half.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: What uh whatever Wells or whatever uh whoever told talked to him at halftime, they really got his head back into gear because he had a he had a pretty terrific second half, all in all.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Yes, I think that brings us to a next segment of good and bad.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, for a while we've been complaining with the Texas Tech coaching staff is the lack of adjustments.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: You know, it seems like nothing changes throughout a game, and we just continually to do the same losing plays, the same losing schemes.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: And we come out of this locker room in the halftime and just dominate the third quarter.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: Here I am looking at the box score right now.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: The third quarter, seven points Texas, 21 points Texas Tech.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: And that's just I feel like that comes from the coaching staff lighting a fire in the locker room and changing their their schemes because that's what really put us over the edge and really made us uh think that we're gonna win this because we then it kind of turned into we're gonna win this.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: But of course, we all know what eventually happened.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: Um it went a great game progression, turned sour very fast.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: But I really appreciated the adjustments the coaches made.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, overall, I was I was pretty happy with uh with the coaching staff.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: The one the one gripe, and it's a big gripe, and it's not just with Wells, it's with it's with a lot of coaches, and they do this, and this is how so many big leads are blown.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: We switch to a prevent defense in the last few minutes of the game.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: When we have the game sealed, we don't choose to do exactly what we've been doing the entire game to get us in this position.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: We switch to a prevent defense, which means you rush three guys again who are tired as absolute hell.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: It's the last few minutes of the fourth quarter.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: These guys have played a hell of a game, you know, and Ellinger has all the time in the world to throw, he's gonna get a few, man.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: And that that not the drive that tied the game, but the drive before that, it was like four or five plays in 45 seconds, they go down and get within a touchdown.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: And it's like prevent defense never works, it never works.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: It worked, you know when it does work when you have a bad quarterback on the other side.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: When you have a guy who can't make a decision, that's not Sam Ellinger.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: That's not.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: He's an experienced dude, he's a very good quarterback.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: You can't do prevent defense against Sam Ellinger, you can't do that.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: For sure.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: The the defensive uh calls towards the end that really blew the game was very disheartening, and unfortunately, wasn't the only uh team uh or segment on the team that decided to go off script.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: Our special teams who was playing phenomenally, like they were this they were the talk of the game.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: It turned turned into a mystery box in the fourth quarter with the squib kicks and the uh those were horrible.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: It's yes, and it of course the unfortunate missed field goal from Trey Wolf, and our special teams just you know they became head scratchers after just a historic game.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: And you know, I've never seen our special teams play that well.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, we had three amazing plays and we had three terrible plays on sp on just special teams alone.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, the muff punt for a touchdown, Texas Tech, that was fantastic, you know, took advantage.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: Obviously, the UT guys, you know, he messed up on that play, but we were there to recover it in the end zone.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: And that was in the second half, right when we're like needing momentum to pick back up.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: It was a great play to get back into the game.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: The onset kick recovery, like we mentioned before, uh, and then the block punt that put us in a position, and then Bowman threw the interception.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: But that was another great play by special teams.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, you hardly ever get, you know, one or two of those in a game, and we had three of them.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: But on the other side of things, we had the miss field goal from 46.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: Trey Wolf only missed two field goals last season.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: That's disheartening.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: Um, the UT block punt for a touchdown, uh, and then you know, not grabbing the onside kick at the end.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: You get the hands team in there, and of course, it was Zach McPherson, my boy, uh, not not so much my boy.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: Um who could and he really did have a pretty good game overall.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: I was I was surprised with how well he played, but uh that I mean you have to if we kit that if we just grab that, we win.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: And there was a few of those, but I mean, onside kicks, man, you practice those all the time.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: And just for sure.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: That that I'm I'm I I this is gonna sound bad, but uh as soon as they got that onside kick in my head, we lost.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just their their momentum was unstoppable at that point, and our defense was just gassed beyond belief to keep up with it anymore.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: And our our offense wasn't burning enough clock, you know.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: So it's just everything fell apart at that in the in those final moments.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, when when they got the onside kick, I was right there with you thinking, okay, it's probably over.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's no way they're not gonna go down and score in two and a half minutes from the you know 40-yard line.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: But uh another questionable call that I didn't like was choosing to play defense first in the overtime.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: We get you have to play offense there, you have to put them on the defensive side of things.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: Like you have to go in and score.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: That was our last chance right there was to go and score real quick because UT was rolling.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: I have the same note, man.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: Uh, I was I was disappointed by that call as well.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: Our our defense had been on the field for several minutes at that point because UT seemed to have had the ball the whole time in the final moments of the fourth quarter.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: Um, and UT has all this momentum in the world.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: Take their offense off the field for a little bit.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: You know, they're in they're obviously in a groove.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: They're they're they're they're seeing red.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: They're they're playing their they're playing their minds out, you know.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: And get our best unit back on the field, score a momentous touchdown.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: That brings us up, and that brings them down, you know, messes with the momentum of both sides a little bit.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: And maybe perhaps our defense gets a little rest and they can go out there and make the play to win.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: Well, and get their heads right too, because they just had two huge drives in no time at all going past them.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, they're tired, everything.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: And then you just threw them right back on the field.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: That's not a good move, it's not a good call by Wells.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: I I was disappointed with that.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: But also before that even happened, I knew the game was over because there just wasn't it, it didn't look good.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: It had all the makings of a heartbreak, and that's what it was.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: I I had no hope in the overtime.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: I I kind of wrote us off whenever it started.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: Um it's just that's that's where the heartbreak really happened.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: I mean, those final moments of the fourth quarter, and it's just it could have been a career-defining moment for Matt Wells, and he blew it, unfortunately.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: Uh, and it's kind of been the story for Texas Tech football for a while now, how we just we scare the hell out of these teams that are ranked in Lubbock, and then we just let them get away with it.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: You know, in the in the in the town, in the stadium that's known as one of the hardest places of winning win in college football, people have been getting away easily lately, you know.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, mental mistakes, and it was I I I I'm not one to complain about the refs.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: I'm really not.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: I I hate it when people automatically go to uh, you know, the refs were horrible, that's the reason why we lost, you know.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: But there was one call in particular that was just brutal, and it was the missed pass interference on TJ Vasher on a third down.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: Uh that was the play before UT blocked the punt for a touchdown.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: And so disappointing.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: So disappointing.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: So I mean, it wasn't even Tators were talking about it.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: It wasn't even close.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: Like, oh, it was awful.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: But like I said, you can't blame you know the refs for a loss like that.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: It wasn't their fault, but that was a huge call that they missed.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: That was a huge momentum swing.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Um, but you know, uh, like I said, can't blame them fully.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: You need you know what the Jones ATT Stadium was missing in this game, too, was definitely a uh a packed crowd.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: We could have used a loud Jones Stadium without question in this game for both the offense and the defense.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: We definitely sold out as many tickets as we could, you know.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: It it's just unfortunate times because if UT were to, you know, that game would have been a whole lot different if we had a pack crowd in there.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: Um, I think that probably that last drive, the last couple drives would have been much more difficult having just more crowd there and more more yells.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, everybody would have been just you know, real loud.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: The Jones would be shaking.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: Like we've we've felt the Jones shake and it would be doing that.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: You know, the Raider power would be throttling that structure.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: It would have been ridiculous.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: Um, but you know, despite how much of a heartbreak and and how we gave away that game, uh, we are still 500.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: We are one and one.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: We have eight more games to go plus bowl season.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: Um, and there was a lot of good to come out of this game.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: There really was.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: And uh some people aren't gonna want to hear that, but there really, really was.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: If you told me that we were gonna lose by a touchdown in overtime to UT after that Houston Baptist game, number eight UT, I would have I would have punched you in the face.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: Like there would there would have been no way I would have thought we would have done that as well as we did.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: Especially with our track record against UT, too.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: It's not very good.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, yeah.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: It's not very good.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: We haven't beat them in the Jones since 2008, and we're not gonna have another chance for another two years.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: But um I think it starts with the receivers.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: Our receivers were fantastic, and I'm talking about the three in particular Keyshawn Carter, Eric Ezukama, and TJ Vasher.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: Fantastic from all those guys.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: Route running, catching, making big plays.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: They did everything you wanted them to do.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, TJ Vasher, two touchdowns, Keyshawn Carter, two touchdowns, Ezukama made that great grab on that dime for Bowman on the free play.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: Uh, our receivers are showing that they are probably one of the best receiving cores in the Big 12.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, man.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: And you and I were talking about this in the pregame that in order for us to be in this game, we need that Texas Tech level of QB connection with the wide receiver, and we really saw it in this last game.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: Some serious Sports Center top 10 moments from TJ Basher that we're so dang used to.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Um I should say that we've missed.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: You know, it's it's it's it's been a little while, and this man is built to uh to be a superstar, and he is, and he really showed it.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: And our wide receiver core is obviously going to be one of the most threatening parts about our team.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: It already is.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: And I that's what you need out of a Texas Tech football team because that's that's our bread and butter, you know.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no doubt.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: And I think uh that you gotta give credit to the O line too.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: They played fantastic.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: Um, UT has some has some good pass rushers, and Bowman had a lot of time to make a decision.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: Uh, and it showed I mean some of those drives, man, were Just perfect.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: Perfect down, perfect execution in all facets.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: Breaking tackles too was huge.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: TJ Vasher broke a few tackles there when he ran in the first touchdown.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: Keyshawn Carter broke a million of them.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: Just great, great play from our receivers.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: For sure.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: And we're definitely going to need that going to Kansas State.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: So that's we were for I should say for the rest of the season.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: So if we can keep this up, I feel really good about our chance of throwing some W's in the column.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: So very proud of the way our receivers came out and played.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and we'll we'll get to the Kansas State preview here in a minute, but uh I wanted to highlight a few more things that that we really did well.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: Uh Sir Roderick was fantastic.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: Uh, we weren't even sure if he was going to play this game, and he came out and kicked butt, man.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: He had uh just just great play from him.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: He's such he's such a good running back, and he's really showing that he is one of, if not the best, running back in the Big 12.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: For sure, man.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: He took the words right out of my mouth, and that last run, his last touchdown was uh everything you want out of a running back.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: Um it's those are the dream runs you love seeing on from your team because uh those almost get you like more hype than any other play, I swear.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: You know, just to see a running back take it take it down practically the whole field like he did.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: Well, he broke he broke four tackles on the way to do it.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: I mean, there he had no business going getting into the end zone on that play, and he did it, and he's a freight train, man.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: He's awesome.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: And no one's talking I feel like no one's talking about him either, which is a I feel like it's a great thing, too.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: It is a good thing.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: He's kind of like our secret weapon right now.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: No doubt.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: When you know in the past, we've just been a running or a uh uh a passing offense, you know, throwing when Mahomes Mahomes threw like 80 times in that OU game in 2016, and Bowman still throws it.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: We still throw a lot, but having having a running back as good as Sir Roderick Thompson, it's been a while since we've had that.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, a a while.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: You think like DeAndre?
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, DeAndre Washington was probably uh our last like really good running back.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: We had some, you know, here or there.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: Justin Stockton was all right, but uh Sir Roderick is really putting putting uh putting it on a new level for Texas Tech running backs.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: Y'all, he's he's only a sophomore.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: He's only a sophomore.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: So um I had a couple more on the positives, especially on the defensive side.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: I know they scored 63 points, um most 21 of which came at the very end of the ball game.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: But through most of that game, we our defensive backs played so much better than what I expected.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, they gave up a few huge plays here or there, but honestly, you know, Alex Hogan's interception was incredible.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: You know, Megan he made a great read on the on the ball, and um we flushed Ellinger out uh to throw just a bad pass.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: And man, our defensive vex showed me a lot in this game.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you sound like Matt Wells.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: Matt Wells was talking about how proud he was of the uh the secondary because he said that was his first game at tech where uh the big plays were the most limited.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: He said we really limited them to the big plays, which we did.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: Um, it could have been way worse.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: They could have been gutting us, you know, had it been the HBU secondary, you know, because HBU was gutting us.
- 25:18SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: So they talk about a turnaround, and I don't think you and I have really harped on this enough of the turnaround between HBU and this UT game.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: The jump from game one to two has it's on all parts of the ball have just been everything we wanted.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, adjustments were a big deal.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, and and you know, I'm happy.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: I'm happy with our performance overall.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: Um HBU was not looking good.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: We were looking like uh like a Kansas against HBU, but man, we really picked it up, and I I have a lot of hope for this season.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: I just hope uh this heartbreaker doesn't get to them for sure.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, I hope our guys are mentally tough.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: I hope they look at this as more of a fuel rather than a downer, you know, saying, like, oh, we should have won that game.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: We gotta we gotta go through this rest of the season proving it, you know.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: So, because heck, I mean, I don't want I'm not gonna sit here and drink some sort of weird Kool-Aid saying we are going to the Big 12 championship.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: But the Big 12 is so up for grabs at this moment.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: I know it's week one.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: But whenever the top dog of OU loses their very first game, I feel like it's an indication of things can get a little weird.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: So I hope our boys keep pushing because who knows where we can end up at the end of the season.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: No doubt.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: This is a wild and crazy season that's gonna have a lot of wild and crazy outcomes.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: But uh, you know, we can't get too down.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: We are with we're only one game in the Big 12 play, man.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: Do we have a whole lot of season left, and we should not be so down on ourselves after a loss to what may be the best team in the Big 12.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: No doubt, man.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: I just hope that the next games don't take as many years off our lives.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: They will.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: Of course they will.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: They of course they will.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: We could be playing Kansas and it could be tight.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's just how Texas Tech football rolls.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: But uh, last couple things I wanted to touch on, UT, and then we'll move on to uh kind of some Big 12 stuff.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: Uh, linebacker play was great.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: Colin Schooler, automatic, uh, you know, great addition to the team.
- 27:17SPEAKER_01: He came in there and played awesome, about seven tackles.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: Rico Jeffers stepped it up big time.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: That dude was awesome this game.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: From a disappointing Houston Baptist game, uh, he really stepped it up and showed why he is he was the most talked-about linebacker going into the year.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: So linebacking core I have no issues with.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: I really don't.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: Uh Merry Weather, I know got hurt at the end of the game.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: So uh we'll we'll kind of have to keep an eye on that, see if he's good to go for K-State.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: But um, schooler, schooler grade edition, Rico was awesome.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: Um, and then the pass rush, man.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: The pass rush was there.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: We've actually pressured Sam Ellinger a few times and got a couple sacks.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was awesome to see because Nick McCann came out of nowhere.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: Interior linemen came in, great, made some great stops on the run.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: Um, just a just a great performance, I think.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh, they were so tired at the end of the game that and you could tell these, I mean, they were rushing three on five because of the stupid prevent defense, but they really showed up and showed that uh showed some heart.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: So I like it.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: For sure.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: I really, really like seeing the the the tackles for all the big losses that we saw.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: So that was that was fantastic.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: You know, whenever we whenever we really put them back, UT had a hard time getting those big yards back to get the first down, which was super unfortunate in the Houston Baptist game, where we would get them the third down on and they're like third and 15, and and Zappy would just throw a bomb and be like, oops, now you're in the red zone.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: So yeah, and that's not that's that's not just the Houston Baptist game.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: That's the last like several years of tech football.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: Third long, third and long every time.
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: They're probably gonna get it.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: They're probably gonna get it.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: And they didn't get a lot of those this game.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: Bingo.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: So that's I hope that's a trend.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: I hope this isn't a uh an anomaly.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: I really hope this is the trend going forward because third downs were killing us these past couple seasons.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: So very proud of the way they they stepped up and did that.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: And they uh love seeing them take down Sam Alder, one of the one of the best quarterbacks in the conference, who's pretty slippery sometimes.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: So I'm I'm very proud of the way they they pulled that out.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: No doubt.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: I mean, all in all, this game is a heartbreaker, but uh showed a lot of good stuff.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: And uh I'm still excited.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm still excited for football season, man.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: I'm not I'm not out.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: I'm not out on football season.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: I'm really not.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: So that's a that's good news out of this game.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: Um keep y'all's guns up, y'all.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: It's a long season.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: It's a long season.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: Uh we we can still make a pretty good year out of this.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: So who knows?
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: But um I wanted to get kind of into some uh some Big 12 news.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, just kind of recapping the week in the Big 12.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: Uh Baylor playing their first game of the year, crushed Kansas.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: I don't think there's much to really talk about with this game.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: Kansas stinks.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's their first.
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: That's the all but the thing of note is it's their first game of the season, first of all.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it's their first game under uh Dave Aranda.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: Um, so it obviously a new coach, it's kind of an impressive opening, I suppose.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: Um, but Kansas looks like they've almost regressed, or they're at least still Kansas, because they they go and lose to uh Coastal Carolina again and uh to start out their their season and then they go get crushed by Baylor.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: Um so I don't I don't think you can really say how good Baylor is yet.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: No, and and I think the thing to note is that Baylor's first game of the year, uh they they played you know great, but most of the Big 12 teams did not play great their first game of the year.
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: So it, you know, Baylor could be uh pretty good, but with with Iowa State, Kansas State, and Tech all really making adjustments and playing well in their second in their second game of the year.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: Um I you know it's good, I guess that's good news for Baylor that they played well right at the gate.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, hey, I'm not gonna say I wouldn't be happy with Tech's performance against Kansas, like if that was us, uh especially with the loss to them last year.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: But uh it does seem that maybe perhaps Baylor fans are getting ahead of themselves.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: Um it's fine.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: No, you're kidding.
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: Baylor fans getting ahead of themselves, dude.
- 31:16SPEAKER_01: You're crazy.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know.
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: But uh it's it is just Kansas, and it really looks like they are just Kansas again.
- 31:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: At Logan, our buddy.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: Um, they're not gonna finish last of the Big 12.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: No way, no way, man.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: It looks like uh Les Miles hasn't made a whole lot of progress in this uh what is it, year three now or two?
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think I think year year two, year two.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: Year two, because he's in Matt Wells, yeah.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: OK State beat up on West Virginia pretty good.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: Um a little surprising, I'll say, Um, especially with how OK State played against um Tulsa in the first week and how West Virginia, you know, crushed their team.
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: Obviously, much different caliber opponents.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: Uh West Virginia played a pretty bad FCS team and uh OK State played Tulsa, who might be pretty good this year.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: Um, but Oklahoma State, I think the thing to note is uh Shane Ellingsworth, the uh the I I guess he came into the season as the third string.
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: Turns out he's you know a pretty decent quarterback.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: So um I don't know.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: We'll see how how OK State progresses, but they look pretty good against West Virginia.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, the thing to note with Oklahoma State is bizarre, it looks like their strongest units defense.
- 32:29SPEAKER_00: Or at least this is the best defense they've had ever under uh Mike Gunny.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: They hold West Virginia, a typically pretty strong offensive team to 13 points.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: I'll take that over literally any Big 12 team.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: Heck, I'd take that over any team.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: What am I talking about?
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: No, but very impressive defensive, yeah, very impressive defensive uh uh performance.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: Uh again, kind of one of those fan bases I thought was getting a little out of hand was West Virginia.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: West Virginia was really high on their stuff whenever they uh blew out eastern Kentucky.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: But I mean, it's kind of like a wake-up call for a lot of these uh fans after some cupcakes.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: I can't say, I can't say we didn't act the same, you know, during the Lamar game when we beat them 77-0.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: So, you know.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: For sure, man.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: I just uh, you know, it's kind of funny to watch how you know things kind of change.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: Because a lot of people were talking about how West Virginia was gonna upset Oklahoma State.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: I still think Oklahoma State's gonna be one of the better teams in the conference.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: They are one of the only ones that are 2-0, them in UT.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: So I still think they're one of the ones to watch out for.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: Um, and I'm hoping West Virginia is not making any progress this year, selfishly, because I hope that you know we can mark that one up for another W like it was last year.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: Um but everyone has a lot of good things to say about Neil Brown.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: Um, but uh again, another another game where I guess it says this one says more than the Kansas game.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: Uh but uh it looks like Oklahoma State's kind of getting it together, I think is what we can say out of that one.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: We'll see.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: We'll see how it goes.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: Um third, third Big 12 game, Iowa State beat TCU, TCU's first game of the year.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: I thought they played uh up in a hot and cold um Iowa State kind of the same thing.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: Uh looks like that running back over there at Iowa State's gonna be pretty pretty dang nasty.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: Uh Brees Hall.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: So uh I don't know.
- 34:14SPEAKER_01: I I it's hard.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: It's hard to judge these teams after the second week.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: For sure.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: And the thing about TCU is the one thing everybody talks about is they're always gonna have a good defense.
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: Uh I mean you let you let Iowa State, who struggled to score against Louisiana, put up 37 on you.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: Again, I know there's a difference between week one and two for game one and two, but I I don't think TCU is going to be the threat they usually are.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: Um I I think Gary Patterson honestly has been on a bit of a decline.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: Um but it's obviously it's not it's hard to say right now, but maybe this is Iowa State getting back together.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: Maybe TCU's actually a good team.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: We just need more games to see.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: But right now, uh I just don't know if this is the typical TCU we're used to with with the with the strong uh uh defense play.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no doubt.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: I think we're gonna find out a lot uh next week.
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: You know, TCU plays Texas, um, Iowa State plays Oklahoma.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: So uh two pretty big games for both of those teams.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: But yeah, and and really the last the fourth and final game that we wanted to mention, obviously the upset, Kansas State for the second year in a row going well, not second year in a row going to Norman, but second year in a row beating Oklahoma.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: You know, obviously as tech fans, you kind of or Big 12 fans that aren't Sooner fans like seeing that for sure.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: Love a good upset like that.
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: Hope we could have joined the Wildcats in celebrating a win over the the evil ones.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: Um so, but very impressive, man.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: You gotta love the fortitude in this Kansas State team because they come out absolutely flat and then they turn it around and they do everything in the second half.
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: Nothing happens for K-State in the first half.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: I believe they only score seven points in the first half, but then turn around to win the game.
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: So it's an incredible effort out of Kansas State and uh an incredible coaching effort.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: I think they Kansas State, it was a wild hire, but man, I think this is a good hire for Kansas State, uh, Chris Kleiman from North Dakota State.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: Um, and uh, if I'm a K-State fan, I've got to feel so happy about taking down the Sooners for the second year.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: And in game one of the 12 play after you lose Arkansas stand big time, man.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: Uh Chris Kleiman, second year with the team.
- 36:31SPEAKER_01: They went eight and five last year, and realistically, they could have gone 10-3 because that Texas game they only lost by three, and then I think West Virginia they only lost by maybe a touchdown.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: So uh, you know, Chris Kleiman could be better than what everybody thinks in K-State.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: They're usually under the radar.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: Uh they usually kind of fall that way, but uh they're always consistent, man.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: I'm jealous.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: I'm jealous of how consistent Kansas State always is.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I want to talk more about that in a second, but before we move on to the team of the week, which is Kansas State, let's talk about that OU team, man.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: OU's a little rattled right now.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: Um I think that everyone was kind of expecting this kind of coming in.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, and I okay, let me rephrase that.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: There was a lot of talk about, you know, this is gonna be Lincoln Riley's first homegrown quarterback.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: And this is the this is the some of the first games that uh Spencer Rattler is seeing.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: This is uh Spencer Rattler's first year starting, so it's you're gonna see some mistakes out of a newbie quarterback.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: Um, even though he's it's uh Lincoln Riley, the uh quarterback guru, he kept getting these already great and talented quarterbacks.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: Now he has to kind of form his own, and he has to kind of run the offense through a whole new player because OU, of course, has run through the quarterback, uh, as are most offenses.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: What am I saying?
- 37:43SPEAKER_00: But it's this may be the year where OU drops more than one, and maybe OU even misses the Big 12 uh championship.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: The difference is the youth of the quarterbacks.
- 37:54SPEAKER_01: Uh, for this is Lincoln Riley's first freshman quarterback.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: He had he's had only experienced guys going up to this point.
- 38:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, Baker Mayfield obviously transferred from Texas Tech.
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: He was not, you know, a young dude by any means, especially for college football.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: Kyler Murray, AM first, and then he transfers to OU.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, Jalen Hurts, who was Alabama, you know, before he came and uh started, you know, balling with with OU last season.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: But he Spencer Radler, it's it's kind of he's been getting a lot of hype, but it's kind of unrealistic to think that he's gonna be what those three quarterbacks were.
- 38:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, those are three of the best college quarterbacks, and I hate Baker Mayfield too uh to my grave, I will hate Baker Mayfield, but he was, you know, him, Kyler Murray, and and Jalen Hurts were all fantastic college quarterbacks.
- 38:44SPEAKER_00: For sure.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: I think uh Sooner fans kind of need to temper their expectations.
- 38:48SPEAKER_00: I'm sure a lot of them are.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: Um especially after this one.
- 38:51SPEAKER_00: Obviously, it's a disappointment.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, especially uh missing the Big 12 championship would obviously be a disappointment for uh team like the Sooners, but it could absolutely happen.
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: You know, obviously I'm rooting for it.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, it's it's uh no just hate to the uh Sooners, it's just more of please can we get them off the top shelf already?
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: You know, uh let's cycle it up a bit.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: Let it be tech.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: But um yeah, uh maybe this is maybe this is a year where like you were saying that this is just it's not fully in place yet.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: It could get there eventually under uh Spencer, but it's just gonna take a couple years.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's not an experienced quarterback, and it's gonna show it show.
- 39:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no doubt.
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: I uh there's OU, they don't they lost a lot.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: They lost C D Lamb, they lost a bunch of guys on defense, so they have to make up for that too.
- 39:40SPEAKER_01: It's you know, Spencer Rattler's not just gonna come in here and be automatic, you know, 100% best quarterback in the nation or whatever.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: So um it'll just take some time.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: I I I still probably think that OU is a better team than Kansas State, and I think Kansas State got one early on them, but um hey, great win for Chris Kleiman and Co.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: And I think that's kind of a maneuver into the preview for this week's game.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: There is no bye week.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: We go two Manhattan, Kansas into that stadium.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: I think they're having fans.
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, man, it's gonna be a big one this week for Tech.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: No doubt.
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: Uh, we're playing the most consistently underrated team in the Big 12 year in and year out.
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: Call it consistency like you do.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's just uh no matter what, the Wildcats are at least formidable.
- 40:33SPEAKER_00: They may they may not be always be the best team, but you you can never go in expecting to just beat this team, no matter what year it is.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: So they leap, they move on from legends, Bill Snyder, to uh what's what's looking to be a great hire in Chris Kleiman.
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: So it's it's they were opening up at minus three, which I think is a fair uh opening score to go with.
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: Um but it's we're we're going in to face this K-State, who lost a respectable G5 opponent uh out of Arkansas State.
- 41:02SPEAKER_00: Still should have won that game, obviously.
- 41:04SPEAKER_00: Um, but now we're looking at a suddenly good, in quotation marks, Kansas State, after knocking number three OU in Norman.
- 41:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, big time.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh there's there's a few things about this K-State team that are super interesting.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: Um I I but the one thing I can't really get a read on is that quarterback.
- 41:22SPEAKER_01: Skyler Thompson, I can't get a read on this guy.
- 41:25SPEAKER_01: I don't know if he's really good or if he's just average and made some good plays.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: I can't tell.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: He had three rushing touchdowns against OU.
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: Like and I don't know if that's gonna be an every game occurrence for this guy, but honestly, his his stats don't really show you, you know, how good he he is, I guess.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: But uh he's a tough one to read.
- 41:47SPEAKER_01: But he's resilient, man.
- 41:48SPEAKER_00: He was resilient in that OU game.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: I think his best quality, which can never be understated, is he's a senior.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: He's got that senior quarterback experience, he's got that senior quarterback mentality, the fortitude to uh come and pull a comeback like they did.
- 42:04SPEAKER_00: Um, but you're right.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's kind of hard to get a read on him otherwise.
- 42:08SPEAKER_00: This Kansas State offense was completely lackluster in the first half.
- 42:12SPEAKER_00: They scored a total of seven points, one touchdown.
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: That's it against a um maybe decent Oklahoma defense.
- 42:20SPEAKER_00: So that was one thing?
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was one thing about OU that I think uh regressed from last season was their defense.
- 42:27SPEAKER_01: Uh, they had guys like Kenneth Murray, who was one of the best defensive players in college football last year.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: He's gone.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I don't really know about OU's defense and how good they're gonna be, but uh Kansas State, man, they uh they have some uh they have some sneaky good, I think, weapons on offense.
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: Um primarily uh the little short running back, Deuce Bawn.
- 42:47SPEAKER_01: He's uh 5'5, so he's a little bitty dude, but man, he was involved in both the rushing and the pass game.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: The pass game, he was the leading receiver on the team.
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: He had like 129 yards uh for them, and so we'll have to watch out for him, I guess.
- 43:03SPEAKER_01: Uh but yeah, I for some reason I just don't like seeing the really the little bitty dudes just kill you.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: And one of my favorite players of all time is Jakeem Grant, and I loved it.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: You know, he's a small guy, he was great, but seeing this guy, you just want to get like one good hit on him.
- 43:17SPEAKER_00: They're shifty, man.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: This guy's gonna talk of uh K-State's uh team, though.
- 43:21SPEAKER_00: I feel like this is the player they're all talking about, not not the quarterback, it's definitely this uh this running back in uh Deuce Bond.
- 43:27SPEAKER_00: And you know, it's it's crazy how much they involve him in this passing game because his rushing is he only rushed for 45 yards on eight carries, but then he records four catches and 130 yards passing.
- 43:39SPEAKER_00: Like what is what is going on with this this strange offense at K State?
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's it's hard not to compare him to Darren Sprouls, another Kansas State legend who was another short guy who made his way into the NFL and uh had a great career.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: But um I he's gonna be somebody to look out for in this in this attack.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Heck.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: And uh it doesn't seem like they have a very strong um pass game in general.
- 44:04SPEAKER_01: You know, a lot of dump offs, and then Deuce Fawn let him get in the open field, then he's he's a tough one to tackle.
- 44:09SPEAKER_01: But uh their their other receivers don't seem to be fantastic.
- 44:14SPEAKER_01: So maybe that's you know that's good for our defensive backs, less uh uh less difficult for them.
- 44:20SPEAKER_00: Yes, that that definitely plays towards our strength.
- 44:23SPEAKER_00: I think our defense is better at stopping the rush than we are the pass, without question.
- 44:27SPEAKER_00: So if if we can if we can shut them down on the passing, I think it's already a huge step in the direction for our win.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: So and just you know, forcing them to the rush, I think is a is a positive for us.
- 44:38SPEAKER_00: Um so what do you think we need to do to win the game?
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: What do you think are the key points to this to this win?
- 44:44SPEAKER_01: The key points I think are to limit turnovers.
- 44:47SPEAKER_01: Um that's been Bowman's thing so far this season.
- 44:51SPEAKER_01: He needs to he needs to just stop with the bad throws, man.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: The these if we can limit the turnovers and not throw interceptions and not give them a chance to swing the momentum, I think we'll be good.
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: Um I think I think good O-line play is gonna be one of the biggest things uh for this game against Kansas State because one of the scariest parts about this Kansas State team is that rush defense.
- 45:11SPEAKER_01: They had dudes, they had Spencer Radler running all over the place in the backfield.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, these guys got to him and and he threw three interceptions, and that wasn't really on the defensive backs.
- 45:21SPEAKER_01: A lot of that was on the rush, you know, batting down some balls in the air and and flipping them up in the air, being able to uh catch them.
- 45:29SPEAKER_01: But I I our O-line is gonna have their work cut out for him against this Kansas State defensive line.
- 45:34SPEAKER_01: So um that that's gonna be a big key point to this game.
- 45:39SPEAKER_00: For sure.
- 45:40SPEAKER_00: And uh I think some non-tangibles are definitely what we were missing in the Jones is in the little apple, it's gonna be a small crowd uh due to the COVID.
- 45:48SPEAKER_00: I think that'll help us out a little bit.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: Um and I think we need to get out on them early.
- 45:54SPEAKER_00: You know, even OU didn't do a great job in getting on out on them early.
- 45:58SPEAKER_00: You know, they only scored three touchdowns in the first half.
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, I don't want I don't want to say only, but you know, whenever you only score one touchdown in the first quarter and you're supposed to be uh Oklahoma, right?
- 46:07SPEAKER_00: You're you're gonna struggle to win.
- 46:09SPEAKER_00: So I'm looking forward to maybe seeing Matt Wells come out with an aggressive uh offense in the in the early game so we can catch them off balance and hopefully keep them off balance.
- 46:19SPEAKER_00: And of course come back and uh make any adjustments we have to in the second half to keep a comeback off.
- 46:24SPEAKER_00: Like uh well, I'm just saying if perhaps we're winning.
- 46:28SPEAKER_00: So I I think that's gonna be one of the big points, and it doesn't look like their secondary is all that awesome.
- 46:36SPEAKER_00: So if we can get use, if we can make good use of our awesome receivers and Alan Bowman getting his head in the game, I think we can maybe turn uh tear him up there for a bit.
- 46:45SPEAKER_00: What do you think?
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you could really see that in the uh Arkansas State game uh that that Kansas State lost first game of the year.
- 46:53SPEAKER_01: Um those Arkansas State receivers took advantage on them.
- 46:56SPEAKER_01: They're defensive backs, they don't look very talented.
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: And uh we have three receivers that are really, really good, not even mentioning Dalton Rigdon and some of those other key guys.
- 47:07SPEAKER_01: Uh but we need to get Keyshawn Carter, we need to get Eric Ezekama, and we need to get TJ Vasher involved, and uh hopefully we'll you know have a couple couple more good plays from them.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: Uh and I think uh the final key for me uh for to try to get a win against this Wildcat team is is getting to Skylar Thompson.
- 47:26SPEAKER_01: He struggles when he's got pressure coming to him like any other quarterback, but he's not he's not like the the level-headed guy that Sam Ellinger is.
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: He's a guy that will is probably prone to make a mistake should he get rushed a few more times.
- 47:38SPEAKER_01: So that could cause turnovers.
- 47:40SPEAKER_01: I think he gets jumbled.
- 47:42SPEAKER_01: You know, we could get him out of the game early.
- 47:44SPEAKER_01: Um, but we need to bring that same pass attack that we brought against Sam Ellinger this past week.
- 47:48SPEAKER_00: For sure, man.
- 47:49SPEAKER_00: Uh no doubt.
- 47:50SPEAKER_00: We definitely want to see that pass, you know, like you said, the pass rush on him.
- 47:54SPEAKER_00: Like, because I want to see, I want to see more of those tackle for losses.
- 47:57SPEAKER_00: I want to see more of those sacks.
- 47:59SPEAKER_00: I want to see uh more of that out of defense.
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: I want to push them back.
- 48:01SPEAKER_00: I want to make them earn the yards.
- 48:02SPEAKER_00: Uh, and especially for this, I don't think this K-State team looks like they're very good at making these huge plays.
- 48:07SPEAKER_00: I think they were, like you said, they rely on a more of a short game.
- 48:10SPEAKER_00: So I think that could be a huge advantage to us to make sure they earn every yard.
- 48:15SPEAKER_01: They've always played kind of a grit and grind type of offense.
- 48:18SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, three rushes, rush for three yards, rush for four yards, rush for six yards, like just stuff that like eats apart your defense.
- 48:26SPEAKER_01: So um we're gonna need to get some some guys in there and and hopefully our offense can kind of have these long drives that gets our defense some some rest.
- 48:36SPEAKER_01: Um so you know, so Roderick Thompson's gonna be another, it's gonna, we're gonna need another good performance from this guy because uh we we can't play kind of a Patrick Mahomes style a game where we're just gunning it out, you know, three plays, score.
- 48:49SPEAKER_01: Those are great.
- 48:50SPEAKER_01: I love getting points on the board, but if our defense is out there for you know 40, 40 minutes of the game, 40 out of the 60, it's it's tough.
- 48:58SPEAKER_00: No doubt.
- 48:59SPEAKER_00: We're definitely playing a Kansas State team that's on the up.
- 49:01SPEAKER_00: They would talk about a turnaround from the Arkansas State game.
- 49:04SPEAKER_00: So I hope we're in the same uh projection.
- 49:07SPEAKER_00: You know, I I think we are.
- 49:09SPEAKER_00: I don't want to just say this L is a is a step back at all from the Houston Baptist game.
- 49:14SPEAKER_00: So I I hope this is a a trend that our coaching is getting better, like with with the schemes and plays and the in the clock management.
- 49:22SPEAKER_00: So, and of course, I want our I want to see more improvement out of our players.
- 49:26SPEAKER_00: So, and I think we are seeing that right now.
- 49:28SPEAKER_00: And I think if we continue that, I feel pretty confident about going to Manhattan.
- 49:32SPEAKER_01: This is a pretty key game for tech.
- 49:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, all in all, you don't uh you don't want to start 0-2 in in comrades play.
- 49:38SPEAKER_01: Um we have who who's the next week?
- 49:41SPEAKER_01: We have Iowa State coming up.
- 49:43SPEAKER_01: So we, you know, it's gonna be uh it's gonna be tough, but um, this is a big game for the Red Raiders.
- 49:50SPEAKER_01: It would be awesome to go on the road and get a win.
- 49:52SPEAKER_01: A lot more confidence uh boosted towards our team.
- 49:56SPEAKER_01: So uh we'll just have to see.
- 49:57SPEAKER_01: That's 2.30, another primetime game.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: Uh we're on FS1 though.
- 50:02SPEAKER_01: We're not on the regular Fox like we were this week, but uh 2.30, man.
- 50:06SPEAKER_01: I love seeing non-11 a.m.
- 50:08SPEAKER_00: kickoffs.
- 50:09SPEAKER_00: No doubt, man.
- 50:10SPEAKER_00: I really hope our boys come to play because I doubt the K State locker room thinks this is a dub, like uh maybe the UT locker room did.
- 50:17SPEAKER_00: Um so I don't know if we can really get them by surprise in that sense.
- 50:20SPEAKER_00: So I really hope we just kind of come out and show that we're the better team all around performance-wise, because I think that's how we're gonna win.
- 50:26SPEAKER_01: No doubt.
- 50:27SPEAKER_01: No doubt, man.
- 50:28SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 50:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, should be an exciting game.
- 50:30SPEAKER_01: But you know, I did want to maneuver.
- 50:33SPEAKER_01: I have some things to say about uh the this past week in professional sports.
- 50:39SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm a huge, you know, we're not just college football fans, we're not just college sports fans in general.
- 50:44SPEAKER_01: We like professional stuff.
- 50:45SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm a big NBA fan.
- 50:47SPEAKER_01: I I grew up a Spurs fan, so uh it's it's been easy to be an NBA fan for the most part.
- 50:54SPEAKER_01: But uh this Heat Lakers final series, man, I am really looking forward to it.
- 50:59SPEAKER_01: Uh I gotta say, I'm looking, I'm rooting hard for Miami because I am a Spurs fan.
- 51:04SPEAKER_01: It's the Lakers.
- 51:05SPEAKER_01: We hate the Lakers.
- 51:06SPEAKER_01: But in the the three out of the four Western Conference semifinalists this year, it was Houston, Denver, Clippers, and Lakers.
- 51:15SPEAKER_01: And as a Spurs fan, three of those teams I absolutely despise.
- 51:19SPEAKER_01: So I was rooting hard for Denver, but um the Lakers, man, they're they're tough.
- 51:24SPEAKER_01: But the thing about this matchup is the culture of Miami.
- 51:30SPEAKER_01: This Heat team with Jimmy Butler as their main leader is really they're a really good team, and they play like a team, man.
- 51:39SPEAKER_01: They're they're scrappy, they play together.
- 51:42SPEAKER_01: But I I think the real difference in this series, it's kind of basic, but it's gonna be LeBron James.
- 51:47SPEAKER_01: Um, Jay Crowder and Jimmy Butler, they're probably gonna be the main defenders on LeBron.
- 51:52SPEAKER_01: They're no slouches by any means, but he's gonna have to find a way to switch off onto guys like Tyler Hero and Duncan Robinson, take advantage using LeBron's size and his strength.
- 52:01SPEAKER_01: Um Bam Otabay is gonna do a decent job at slowing down Anthony Davis, but Miami has the guys to at least slow down LeBron a little bit.
- 52:09SPEAKER_01: And the Lakers, they're gonna need the other guys to step up if they want to win this series.
- 52:14SPEAKER_01: Um, they've gotten away with just using Anthony Davis and LeBron with like a little sprinkle of Rondo, a little sprinkle of Dwight Howard, but they kind of ran through the Portland, Houston, and Denver series kind of just on those two guys' backs.
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: So, you know, but this Miami series, they're gonna need guys like Kuzma, Rondo, Dwight, KCP, Danny Green.
- 52:34SPEAKER_01: They're gonna need those type of guys to step up in a way that we haven't really seen yet.
- 52:38SPEAKER_01: Um, but if I'm betting money, I'm gonna say Lakers and seven, but uh Miami's gonna give them hell.
- 52:43SPEAKER_01: Dragic and Hero need to keep doing what they've been doing.
- 52:46SPEAKER_01: Uh little worried about Atabayo offensively against Davis because he's such a good defender.
- 52:51SPEAKER_01: But uh the Heat are tough as hell, man.
- 52:53SPEAKER_01: And uh I think it's gonna be a fun NBA finals.
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: Man, I'm not even gonna try to follow you up on NBA.
- 52:59SPEAKER_00: You're the you're the smartest guy I know when it comes to anything basketball.
- 53:03SPEAKER_00: Love, love the passion, man.
- 53:05SPEAKER_00: But you know, I'm definitely going for the heat as well.
- 53:06SPEAKER_00: No one wants to see this Lakers team, of course, unless you're a Lakers fan win.
- 53:10SPEAKER_00: So I'm pretty sure it's the whole nation going for the heat.
- 53:13SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 53:13SPEAKER_01: And they're just that they're a type of scrappy team that you like.
- 53:16SPEAKER_01: Like everybody can root for you because they just have a bunch of dudes who really bought into that culture over there.
- 53:22SPEAKER_01: I can't say enough about uh Eric Spolstra, that Miami coach, he's really bought everybody into this team, and they have done something that not a lot of not a lot of people expected them to be in this position.
- 53:34SPEAKER_01: They've lost three games in the playoffs.
- 53:37SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 53:38SPEAKER_01: Like it's insane how good this team actually is.
- 53:41SPEAKER_01: And I think they're gonna give the Lakers hell, man.
- 53:44SPEAKER_01: Who knows, man?
- 53:45SPEAKER_01: Who knows, right?
- 53:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, it could happen.
- 53:47SPEAKER_01: No doubt, no doubt.
- 53:48SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm looking forward to it.
- 53:49SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be fun.
- 53:50SPEAKER_01: Uh kind of a good a good cap off to the bubble.
- 53:53SPEAKER_01: Jimmy Buckets.
- 53:55SPEAKER_01: Jimmy Buckets all day.
- 53:57SPEAKER_01: Um, and then I wanted to touch on the uh the Cowboys and Texans.
- 54:01SPEAKER_01: Obviously, both teams have uh had a pretty pretty rough start to the season.
- 54:06SPEAKER_01: Um more so Texans than Cowboys, I think.
- 54:09SPEAKER_01: Um I think for the Cowboy fans out there, there's concerns about this team, but you shouldn't be worried about the one and two start.
- 54:15SPEAKER_01: Uh they've lost to the you know Seattle Seahawks and uh who they lose to the first week?
- 54:21SPEAKER_01: Uh the Rams.
- 54:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the Rams, who are two pretty good teams.
- 54:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, losing to those guys, there's no there's no real shame in doing that.
- 54:29SPEAKER_01: But um the NFC East is the weakest conference in the NFL right now.
- 54:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, if your biggest competition for a playoff spot is the Washington football team, I think you're gonna be fine because the Eagles stink, and so and so do the Giants.
- 54:44SPEAKER_01: So if you're a Dallas fan, man, don't worry about it.
- 54:48SPEAKER_01: Um I'm still not a big Dak guy.
- 54:50SPEAKER_01: I'm really not.
- 54:51SPEAKER_01: I I don't I don't really like Prescott all that much.
- 54:54SPEAKER_01: I think uh he puts up killer stat lines and people see his fantasy points and they're like, oh man, you know, this dude, four touchdowns again, two rushing touchdowns, like Dak Prescott.
- 55:05SPEAKER_01: What you need to pay him, you know, this is insane.
- 55:08SPEAKER_01: But he still struggles in the big moments and isn't the best decision maker uh when the game's on the line.
- 55:14SPEAKER_01: You know, watching that Cowboys game, it was tough because that last pass, that last interception was horrible.
- 55:20SPEAKER_01: He just kind of booted it out.
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: He could have just thrown it out of bounds and had another play set up, but that's the decision that Dak makes is to just you know throw it in, hope something good happens.
- 55:29SPEAKER_01: But I don't know, that it's it's difficult, it's difficult for me to say they should just pay Dak Prescott like he's the best quarterback in the league, you know.
- 55:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I I don't know if there's gonna be a ton of people that would disagree with that.
- 55:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, obviously there's some hard there are some hardcore Dak lovers, don't get me wrong.
- 55:46SPEAKER_00: But uh it's I I think people definitely need to temper their expectation when they're talking about Dak Prescott.
- 55:52SPEAKER_00: He's he's no Patrick Mahomes, he's no Lamar Lamar Jackson.
- 55:56SPEAKER_00: Um but and I like Earl and you're kind of on your point, is yeah, one and two start, but it's a there's so much season to go.
- 56:03SPEAKER_00: I think we can all expect the Cowboys to be in the playoffs, and it's year one under the new coach, so it's let let them develop.
- 56:09SPEAKER_00: And I don't think Cowboys fans should be that worried either.
- 56:12SPEAKER_01: No doubt.
- 56:13SPEAKER_01: And I I just think it's tough.
- 56:14SPEAKER_01: It's they're in such a tough position with Dak Prescott right now because it's like, do you like what's a better replacement?
- 56:21SPEAKER_01: You know, like what are you gonna you know let Dak walk and then try to trade up in this year's draft, possibly get a Justin Fields, maybe even a Trevor Lawrence if you're willing to throw in the house, you know.
- 56:33SPEAKER_01: Like, I I don't know.
- 56:35SPEAKER_01: I don't know if I would I to but to me, Dak Prescott isn't gonna be the guy that that takes you over the top.
- 56:40SPEAKER_01: But uh anyway, this season, I think the Cowboys are gonna be fine.
- 56:43SPEAKER_01: Uh they have a bunch of, I mean, uh if you don't look at that Giants game and that Eagles game and really that Washington game, that should be six wins for Dallas.
- 56:52SPEAKER_01: It really should, because this conference sucks.
- 56:55SPEAKER_00: For sure, man.
- 56:56SPEAKER_00: And uh I I think there's just there's like you said, there's tons of time to develop.
- 57:01SPEAKER_00: And I I don't think cowboys should be uh pounding a panic button yet.
- 57:05SPEAKER_00: No doubt, no doubt.
- 57:06SPEAKER_00: Now we're should do it though.
- 57:07SPEAKER_00: I tell you what.
- 57:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 57:09SPEAKER_01: That's just that's Cowboys.
- 57:10SPEAKER_00: So reactionary.
- 57:13SPEAKER_00: I say that as a guy that's a casual Cowboys fan.
- 57:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we should say we're both we're both kind of casual NFL fans.
- 57:19SPEAKER_01: Uh we we play fantasy football like the press.
- 57:22SPEAKER_01: We're from San Antonio, so we're kind of in between.
- 57:24SPEAKER_01: We're like, well, we root for both Texas teams, which go Texas.
- 57:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, go Texas, but uh who should be worried are the Houston Texans fans.
- 57:33SPEAKER_01: I know they're 0-3, and it's to three really good teams in the Chiefs, the Ravens, and the Steelers.
- 57:39SPEAKER_01: You really couldn't have opened up against three tougher opponents, but they are gonna struggle with this team, and they're really missing DeAndre Hopkins.
- 57:51SPEAKER_01: Bill O'Brien, I don't I don't know how this man still has a job.
- 57:55SPEAKER_01: I really don't.
- 57:56SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't get it.
- 57:58SPEAKER_01: But Deshaun Watson.
- 58:00SPEAKER_01: Is he the most hated man in Houston?
- 58:02SPEAKER_01: Right, do you think?
- 58:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, probably, right?
- 58:04SPEAKER_01: If it he should be up there with Westbrook.
- 58:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, the Houston fans should hate Russell West.
- 58:09SPEAKER_01: I don't understand why they're still on Westbrook's side because that man is so frustrating.
- 58:14SPEAKER_01: But yeah, Bill O'Brien is is the most hated man in Houston.
- 58:17SPEAKER_01: Um, and I am the biggest hater of Houston.
- 58:20SPEAKER_01: But yeah, man, the Texans uh not looking too good to start off the year.
- 58:25SPEAKER_01: But again, they're in another weak division.
- 58:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, Jacksonville, Indianapolis, Tennessee, I would I would pick to to win that division.
- 58:33SPEAKER_01: Uh they're pretty good, but I I'd still expect Houston to finish second in that in that division.
- 58:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, but we'll see.
- 58:41SPEAKER_01: Any shot of wild card, you think?
- 58:43SPEAKER_01: Uh I I wouldn't I wouldn't put them there.
- 58:46SPEAKER_01: Uh, I don't know the I don't know.
- 58:48SPEAKER_00: So you don't think they're making the playoff at all, huh?
- 58:50SPEAKER_01: No, I I don't know the percentage of teams that start off 0-3 and make the playoffs, but uh it's probably not very high.
- 58:56SPEAKER_01: So uh but the good news is they have a very easy schedule moving forward.
- 59:01SPEAKER_01: Uh you're not you don't have to play the Ravens, the Chiefs, and the Steelers anymore.
- 59:05SPEAKER_01: But um, yeah, Deshaun Watson's awesome.
- 59:08SPEAKER_01: Uh that O-line stinks.
- 59:10SPEAKER_01: I so I don't know.
- 59:12SPEAKER_01: Houston, Houston, I think the Texans are in some trouble this year.
- 59:15SPEAKER_01: But um, all right, Tristan, why don't we end the podcast here?
- 59:18SPEAKER_01: Go uh go ahead and give me your song of the week.
- 59:20SPEAKER_00: All right, so my song of the week, you know, I figured I've been throwing too many dudes out there.
- 59:24SPEAKER_00: It's about time I got a lady in here.
- 59:27SPEAKER_00: So I kind of said this the other week how much I love covers.
- 59:30SPEAKER_00: So before I became a huge country music fan, I was really into like alt-rock and like pump uh pop rock.
- 59:36SPEAKER_00: So there's a song by everybody knows this song, it's one of the most famous songs from the decade.
- 59:40SPEAKER_00: Um, it there's a song by Jimmy Eat World called The Middle.
- 59:44SPEAKER_00: And uh a girl in Nashville covered this song named Caroline Spence.
- 59:49SPEAKER_00: She covers the middle, and I thought it was just like a really nice kind of country folk version of the song.
- 59:53SPEAKER_00: And I think that's just such a cool thing to hear when it's this uh very fast upbeat rock and roll, and then it turns into this soft and sweet uh song.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_00: She just has such a mellow voice and calming voice.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_00: I think it's just so cool to see a cross-genre cover.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: It's tough to uh it's tough to cross genres like that and uh make a cover out of a song that is you know one entirely different type of music and make it you know completely different or slow it down.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_01: But uh yeah, man, that's really cool.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_01: I I'll have to check that out.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_01: I I do like the middle.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_01: Uh I was I was a big like alternative guy, but I I like that song.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_00: And it's it's cool because I never really realized how actually pretty good the lyrics were.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_00: It's like a hey, don't be sad, be happy kind of song.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_00: And I never really realized that.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_00: I was just too busy jamming out before, you know, and she kind of lays it out.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_00: So go give it a listen.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_00: I think it's a good one.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_01: In your in your teen teen uh punk phase?
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was hardcore into the to the rock before I went full on into country music.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_01: You were like George Strait, this guy's pretty good.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was like, oh wait, I really like this stuff.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we all had the teen phase.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_01: Um jams out of that.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_01: Hey man, we can all still jam to Ocean Avenue.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, for sure.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_00: No, I'm not saying I can't do a nostalgia playlist every once in a while, but it's just like my I just feel like my my music taste is just kind of matured beyond it.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_00: Not I'm not mean that in a condescending way.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_00: I just I like I just like what country music has to offer, is all.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_01: Right on, right on.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_01: Well, cool, man.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_01: Um my song of the week is Real Emotions by the Lost Lonely Boys.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_01: And if you have not heard of the Lost Lonely Boys, they are fans.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_01: Everybody's heard of their song Heaven.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_01: You may not know who the Lil Sonely Boys is, but you know their song Heaven.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_01: Great song.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_01: San Angelo.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_01: San Angelo, but they're they got some San Antonio roots.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_01: They love San Antonio, they're always down here playing music, uh, but obviously pre-COVID.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_01: Um, but they're they've they've shown up actually.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_01: The Spurs uh sometimes will hold like a post-game concert sort of deal, and they've been down there a few times.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_01: But uh my dad had my dad had a few CDs in the car that we would listen to on uh on the drive home from soccer practice when I was you know 12 years old.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_01: And one of them was the Los Only Boys, and they are so good.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_01: Uh all their songs are great love songs, uh they jam out hard, man.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_01: I really, I really love this band.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_01: Uh it's one of my favorites of all time.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_00: Great pick, and that's such a Steven Rodriguez big, man.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_00: And what's so what what I love about bands like that is they just take the region they're from and just pour it into their music.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_00: It's it's kind of hard to describe uh a band with more attachment to the roots because they sound so Tex-Mex uh with their sounds.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_00: It's got the it's got the the USA with the Mexico blend, and it just it has this awesome uh result.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_01: They usually throw in a few Spanish lyrics in their songs that are that are all English, and then they'll have a little verse of Spanish.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_01: And uh I really dig it, man.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_01: They they they have a they have a great vibe to them.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_01: So uh that was Real Emotions by Los Only Boys.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_01: Well, all right, man.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_01: I think that's gonna do it here for uh episode number nine, episode number eight.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_01: If you don't include the bonus episode, we're just gonna call it episode number nine.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_01: So uh we're uh we're obviously we're not gonna come up with a with a bonus episode every week, but uh we we had uh Kyle come on with us uh after we already recorded the first episode.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_01: And so we thought, hey, before UT week, you know, maybe we'll have a guy on.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_01: So uh we really did appreciate Kyle.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_01: And if you haven't checked that out, go check it out.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_01: Uh it'll be kind of a downer uh listening to the UT prediction after that game.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_01: You may just want to get it out of your head, but um, you know, uh we had a lot of fun with Kyle.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_01: Um, but that'll do it for episode nine.

- 1:04:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I saw on uh uh the Thursday night game last week, it was Jacksonville, Miami.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_01: And the first play of the game, Dakota Allen tackled Jakeem Grant on the kickoff.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_01: The last play of the game, Dakota Allen tackled Jakeem Grant.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_01: That was really cool.
