Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Don Demayo's with us out of Australia. Don a good morning,
- 0:02Speaker 1: good morning to you. Now you've got a snap ban
- 0:05Speaker 1: on machetes in Victoria. This is the violent brawl that
- 0:09Speaker 1: we've seen in the shopping center.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Yes, so from tomorrow you can no longer purchase the
- 0:14Speaker 2: machete in Victoria. And that does follow that vicious brawl
- 0:18Speaker 2: in the shopping center in the Melbourne suburb of Preston.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Now two teenagers sixteen and fifteen years old are alleged
- 0:24Speaker 2: to be the main offenders. They were both on bail
- 0:27Speaker 2: at the time. The skirmish was between rival gangs, it's
- 0:30Speaker 2: understood and as you can imagine, shoppers going about their
- 0:34Speaker 2: business on a Sunday afternoon were left scurrying for safety,
- 0:38Speaker 2: absolutely petrified as to what was going on there. And
- 0:41Speaker 2: now four mails have been charged. Police are still looking
- 0:44Speaker 2: for three others. But the government has introduced this snap
- 0:46Speaker 2: ban on the sale of machetes from midday tomorrow. And
- 0:52Speaker 2: the police say that there's three machetes that had been
- 0:55Speaker 2: seized and a total of four is believed to have
- 0:58Speaker 2: been used in the brawl. So the Premier has come
- 1:01Speaker 2: out and said these knives have no place on our streets.
- 1:05Speaker 2: So these laws will get these dangerous weapons off the streets,
- 1:09Speaker 2: according to the Premier, and they've moved as quickly as possible.
- 1:13Speaker 2: And in her words, we must never let the places
- 1:16Speaker 2: we gather, where families shop and enjoy the peace of
- 1:19Speaker 2: their weekend, become places that we fear.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Well, yeah, that's true. But once they just use something else,
- 1:26Speaker 1: you know what I mean? But what are you going
- 1:28Speaker 1: to do? I hope not baseball bats, you know what
- 1:30Speaker 1: I mean. I suppose it's a reaction, isn't it. Hey?
- 1:35Speaker 1: You yes? What about this guy in Bali with the
- 1:38Speaker 1: drugs chargers charges? Pretty major?
- 1:41Speaker 2: Absolutely. There's an Australian man who's from Sidney, Lamar Aaron Acchi.
- 1:45Speaker 2: He could face the death penalty for allegedly smuggling one
- 1:49Speaker 2: point eight kilos of cocaine in Bali. The forty three
- 1:52Speaker 2: year old was arrested. He was presented to the media,
- 1:57Speaker 2: let's say, in an orange jumpsuit and black block clava yesterday.
- 2:00Speaker 2: We know that the police believed the drugs, estimated to
- 2:03Speaker 2: be worth about one point one million dollars, were imported
- 2:07Speaker 2: to Indonesia disguised as would you believe linked chocolates in
- 2:11Speaker 2: two separate packages. They arrived from the UK allegedly. Now
- 2:15Speaker 2: we have heard from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs
- 2:17Speaker 2: that they are providing consular assistance, but there's no actual
- 2:21Speaker 2: charges being laid yet, so we're waiting to hear. Police
- 2:23Speaker 2: don't believe that mister Archo was the mastermind. They say
- 2:26Speaker 2: he was promised around four thousand, seven hundred Aussie dollars
- 2:30Speaker 2: to pick up the packages.
- 2:32Speaker 1: That's a raw deal deal for him, isn't it. Donna,
- 2:35Speaker 1: thank you for that. Appreciate your time. Dona Demo, our
- 2:37Speaker 1: Australia correspondent. For more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge,
