- 0:00Speaker 1: Today's guests are two members of a band that I
- 0:03Speaker 1: really enjoy. They're out of Mobile, Alabama. They have a
- 0:08Speaker 1: new album coming out in May, and they've been picking
- 0:11Speaker 1: up some steam. I'm grateful to spend time today with
- 0:15Speaker 1: Brandon Coleman and Andy Bishop from the Red Clay Strays. Yeah,
- 0:47Speaker 1: I guess Ben has that mustache. Some people can't grow
- 0:50Speaker 1: certain facial hair.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Brandon's a native man. Yeah, I can't really. I can
- 0:55Speaker 2: grow it.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Mustache and a little bit of a goatee, but that's it.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Everything else doesn't work.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Really?
- 1:02Speaker 1: Why? What happened? You weren't scalped or something.
- 1:05Speaker 2: How native are you? I'm like Cherokee. Doing the scalping. Yeah,
- 1:09Speaker 2: we were doing the scalping.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Then you'd think you'd have a little extra collection.
- 1:15Speaker 3: You would think so. If my grandmother would have passed
- 1:17Speaker 3: them down or something. She never did any of that.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Wow. Was your grandmother, did she seem kind of native?
- 1:24Speaker 1: Did she have kind of a vibe like that?
- 1:27Speaker 2: A little bit.
- 1:28Speaker 3: It was really my great-great-grandmother. I have an old black-and-white
- 1:32Speaker 3: photo of her somewhere. She's just straight-up Cherokee Indian.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Straight out of Red Dead Redemption 2, you know.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Yeah, do you feel native sometimes?
- 1:43Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Like, if you get near, like... Like, I wonder if
- 1:48Speaker 1: you hear stuff different than on, like, a regular... non-native person.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Here i'll speak on i think brandon gets a little
- 1:56Speaker 2: frisky when like a uh like a like a rainstorm's
- 1:59Speaker 2: coming in you know yeah him and his brother would
- 2:02Speaker 2: take his brothers on the road with us to our videographer.
- 2:04Speaker 1: So yeah i've met him one time and i met
- 2:05Speaker 1: you guys he.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Can actually throat sing pretty good too yeah he does
- 2:08Speaker 2: it as a joke and everybody's.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Like you can't do that he's like i'm native i
- 2:12Speaker 3: can do that.
- 2:12Speaker 2: If i want to what he'll start really and get
- 2:15Speaker 2: into it like yeah See, you can do it too.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Watch out.
- 2:19Speaker 1: That's powerful, man. Yeah, one time I was up in Minnesota,
- 2:21Speaker 1: like in Minnetonka, Minnesota, and I went to, they had a,
- 2:26Speaker 1: what's it called, like a big get-together that natives have? Powwow.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Every time I've heard the word powwow, it just meant
- 2:32Speaker 3: backing trucks up to a campfire and drinking whiskey all night.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Yeah, but that sounds pretty native to me too.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:39Speaker 1: You know?
- 2:39Speaker 2: Cooking meat. Throw a little gambling in there too.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Yeah, powwow is a gathering with dances held by many
- 2:44Speaker 1: Native Americans in First Nations communities.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I'd say so.
- 2:47Speaker 1: That's it.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Ben was right.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Yeah, Ben was right. I didn't sleep that great. You
- 2:53Speaker 1: guys have that ever? Oh, dude.
- 2:56Speaker 2: All the time. I don't think we sleep good until
- 2:58Speaker 2: we go home.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 3:00Speaker 3: I don't sleep well going out on the road. It
- 3:03Speaker 3: takes a couple of days to get used to sleeping
- 3:04Speaker 3: on a bus. And then getting home, it takes a
- 3:08Speaker 3: couple of days to get used to sleeping in your
- 3:10Speaker 3: own bed again.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:11Speaker 2: So that equals about no sleep. Yeah.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it is kind of a... It's a real.
- 3:17Speaker 1: You're always trying to get comfortable. Yeah.
- 3:21Speaker 2: That's why we carry a lot of Z-Quil on the bus.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:23Speaker 2: That's the first couple of nights. Have you pre-vosed it?
- 3:26Speaker 2: You been in the tour buses?
- 3:28Speaker 1: Yep.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Those things are hard to sleep in for the first
- 3:30Speaker 2: couple of nights for me.
- 3:32Speaker 1: What part do you sleep in and what part do
- 3:33Speaker 1: you choose to sleep in? Because there's the different levels
- 3:37Speaker 1: of the bunks.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Yeah, so we're in a crew bus still, so we
- 3:39Speaker 2: travel 12 deep. We got the crew, everybody in one bus,
- 3:43Speaker 2: so I'm the back middle. Yeah, I'm the top bunk.
- 3:46Speaker 2: We're looking for that second bus, but.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Yeah, no, we have one bus when we go, and
- 3:51Speaker 1: everybody's in there. They have a crew bus for production,
- 3:54Speaker 1: so they're in a separate bus.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Ben's got some pictures. There you go.
- 3:58Speaker 1: There's definitely different values to the different slots, I think.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Yeah, our tour manager and keyboard player, they all prefer
- 4:07Speaker 3: the bottom bunk. They say it's the nicest. They said
- 4:10Speaker 3: the worst part about the bottom bunk is if you
- 4:12Speaker 3: blow a tire out, it scares the crap out of you.
- 4:15Speaker 2: And you're by everybody's feet.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point. I guess there's a lot
- 4:18Speaker 1: more dirt down there. There's a little bit of foot
- 4:20Speaker 1: traffic if you open the curtain.
- 4:22Speaker 3: People throwing their shoes off, and then you've got to
- 4:24Speaker 3: wake up and move shoes out of the way.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true. Yeah, you have to really want to
- 4:28Speaker 1: get up.
- 4:29Speaker 2: So I will tell you, our old bus, what we
- 4:31Speaker 2: call it, it's a bus. The one we traveled in before,
- 4:34Speaker 2: it's like a redneck Prevost. It was a 99E450 with
- 4:39Speaker 2: six bunks built in the back of it. You could
- 4:41Speaker 2: probably Google it, Ben. Yeah, you could. The Breeze is
- 4:44Speaker 2: what we named it.
- 4:45Speaker 1: And this was homemade, so this is how you guys first,
- 4:47Speaker 1: when you guys started hitting the road. Yeah.
- 4:49Speaker 2: And we broke down a lot, picked ourselves up off
- 4:53Speaker 2: the side of the road multiple times.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:56Speaker 3: We had started looking for a van, and the vans
- 5:00Speaker 3: were just so expensive at the time.
- 5:01Speaker 2: So, yeah, we're sitting on one up there.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I don't know if we have a picture of the inside.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Probably not. Not on the internet.
- 5:08Speaker 3: That's an old picture.
- 5:09Speaker 1: And this looks like one of those things where they
- 5:10Speaker 1: go to pick up seniors kind of to take them
- 5:12Speaker 1: to market and stuff.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Is it that sort of... Like a shuttle bus.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Did it have that sort of door on it?
- 5:17Speaker 2: That's us waving goodbye. Yeah, that was when we got
- 5:19Speaker 2: the new bus. It had the door. It had an
- 5:23Speaker 2: electric open. We ended up just getting rid of it.
- 5:26Speaker 2: And then our security system was just a ratchet strap.
- 5:29Speaker 2: It had an eye bolt on it and we just
- 5:30Speaker 2: hooked to it. Yeah, it was rough. At night time, yeah.
- 5:34Speaker 4: But we.
- 5:35Speaker 2: We're practically diesel mechanics. If you ever got a 7.3
- 5:38Speaker 2: and you worked on.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Because there's so many breakdowns, you mean?
- 5:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:42Speaker 1: We had one at a... We had one... Well, we
- 5:46Speaker 1: had a guy that refused to... He would buzz cut
- 5:49Speaker 1: his hair every day, refused to cut any of his
- 5:53Speaker 1: ear hair.
- 5:55Speaker 2: What about his nose hair?
- 5:57Speaker 1: It was all coming out of his ears. Whatever was
- 6:00Speaker 1: supposed to be in his nose had really... had gone upstream,
- 6:04Speaker 1: I guess.
- 6:05Speaker 2: You could see it? Oh, yeah.
- 6:07Speaker 1: You could see it. I mean, it was like his,
- 6:09Speaker 1: you know.
- 6:10Speaker 2: One of those little troll dolls.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yes. Yeah, like one of those dolls you would get
- 6:14Speaker 1: at school you put on your pencil. On your pencil, yeah.
- 6:17Speaker 2: You gotta cut that at night. You gotta do it
- 6:19Speaker 2: for him.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Oh, I think the moon cuts his hair. The moon
- 6:22Speaker 1: cuts his hair. I mean, it was like, it had like,
- 6:25Speaker 1: it was involved in something extraterrestrial and he had But
- 6:28Speaker 1: that thing broke down a couple of times. And one
- 6:30Speaker 1: time he just threw a cup of water on it.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I was like, that's not, we got to get another one.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Is he shampooing it?
- 6:36Speaker 1: I'm talking about the engine. The engine broke down one
- 6:38Speaker 1: time and he threw a cup of water on it.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I thought you were talking about his ear hair. Oh,
- 6:40Speaker 2: the ear hair? A cup of water on his ear hair.
- 6:42Speaker 4: The ear hair.
- 6:42Speaker 2: We've thrown our share. Well, we blew a hub. We
- 6:45Speaker 2: had to throw water on it.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Mostly just to listen to it sizzle how hot it was.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Yeah. It's hot.
- 6:52Speaker 2: It's hot.
- 6:54Speaker 1: That's always the best mechanic, dude, when you just crack
- 6:56Speaker 1: that thing open.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Oh, dude, we've had some. There was one. You remember the, oh,
- 7:00Speaker 2: we blew a heater hose, and it had what's called
- 7:03Speaker 2: a quick connect on it. Was it a heater hose?
- 7:06Speaker 2: You talking about Joe? No, this was me and you.
- 7:08Speaker 2: You remember I spit on it. Oh, yeah. We couldn't
- 7:11Speaker 2: get it to go over that little, it's like you
- 7:13Speaker 2: just push it on, it clips, and that's it. And
- 7:16Speaker 2: we just fought with it for hours, and I was like,
- 7:17Speaker 2: you know what? We missed our show.
- 7:18Speaker 3: We had to cancel our show and everything because we
- 7:20Speaker 3: could not get this thing to slide up.
- 7:21Speaker 2: It just needed a little. And I was like, you
- 7:23Speaker 2: know what? Screw it. I went in there. We're all
- 7:25Speaker 2: sitting in the bus kind of thinking about what to do.
- 7:26Speaker 2: I went out there and spit on it and pushed
- 7:28Speaker 2: it on there and got it good.
- 7:29Speaker 1: And it worked.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Just needed a little lube, man. That's it.
- 7:31Speaker 1: That's all you need a lot of times. Red Clay Strays, man.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Thank you guys for coming in.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Thanks for having us.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm such a big fan, guys.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Why?
- 7:43Speaker 1: I don't know. There's something damn. There's something just damn.
- 7:50Speaker 1: it feels like a little bit whimsical historical romantic about
- 7:55Speaker 1: the music you know thank you there's something that feels
- 7:58Speaker 1: like you just hop on the clock hands and just
- 8:02Speaker 1: start spinning backwards and it's like almost feels like a
- 8:05Speaker 1: little bit of like a time warp I don't know
- 8:07Speaker 1: this just feels it feels good man it feels good
- 8:10Speaker 1: to listen to that's cool you know I know you
- 8:14Speaker 1: guys started you guys are from the south you guys
- 8:16Speaker 1: are from Alabama right.
- 8:17Speaker 2: We all still live there born and raised Mobile.
- 8:20Speaker 1: And how did you guys, was it a couple of
- 8:23Speaker 1: you at first? You guys have five guys now?
- 8:25Speaker 3: We have six now.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Okay.
- 8:27Speaker 3: But, yeah, it was originally five, yeah. We just hired
- 8:32Speaker 3: a keyboard player.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Oh, wow. Like last month.
- 8:36Speaker 4: Yep.
- 8:36Speaker 1: And did you audition for that, or how'd that go?
- 8:39Speaker 3: We actually met him when we were touring with El King,
- 8:41Speaker 3: and he was playing with El at the time. And
- 8:43Speaker 3: then we realized last summer that he wasn't playing with
- 8:46Speaker 3: El anymore and, you know, reached out to him.
- 8:49Speaker 4: Immediately. Hell no.
- 8:50Speaker 2: It was one of those, we showed up, we're like,
- 8:52Speaker 2: we're sevens. He's like, he's not with us anymore. We
- 8:55Speaker 2: turn around, made a phone call. Like, we got him now.
- 8:58Speaker 2: He's ours.
- 8:59Speaker 1: You're like, they let him go.
- 9:00Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Oh, that's perfect then. So is that needed because you
- 9:05Speaker 1: want to add a different element to the music or
- 9:07Speaker 1: what do you, why do you, how do you come
- 9:09Speaker 1: to make that choice kind of?
- 9:11Speaker 3: I think it's, yeah, we just wanted a, we've always
- 9:13Speaker 3: wanted a keys player to, you know, lay down piano
- 9:16Speaker 3: and organ tracks and I could play a little bit
- 9:20Speaker 3: but not near as good as we needed, I guess.
- 9:24Speaker 3: So that's always been a thing we've wanted to add
- 9:27Speaker 3: in our music. And it was supposed to be, we
- 9:30Speaker 3: were going to get our drummer's little brother to play
- 9:33Speaker 3: keys with us, and he passed away in 2020. So
- 9:37Speaker 3: that was, Sevens is the right guy to fill that
- 9:41Speaker 3: role that was originally intended for him, I think.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Yeah. Was there like a trial night where he comes
- 9:46Speaker 1: in and you're like, okay, this is, Normally it.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Would, we would hold an audition, but we already knew
- 9:52Speaker 3: how great of a player he was from seeing him
- 9:54Speaker 3: play with Elle and just sitting around in green rooms
- 9:57Speaker 3: when there'd be a piano in the green room and he, we, we,
- 10:00Speaker 3: saw him play and how good he was.
- 10:02Speaker 2: I think we've always been kind of looking for that
- 10:04Speaker 2: piano player. And when we saw him with Elle, like
- 10:06Speaker 2: Brandon said, it's one of those, like, dang, that guy's good.
- 10:10Speaker 2: So when we saw that opportunity, we jumped on it
- 10:12Speaker 2: as soon as we could. And he fits in. just
- 10:15Speaker 2: along with us.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Yeah, when we called, we weren't like, do you want
- 10:17Speaker 3: to audition for us? We were like, hey, do you
- 10:18Speaker 3: want to play with us?
- 10:20Speaker 2: But here we are, we're auditioning. We'll audition in front
- 10:22Speaker 2: of house guys and guitar techs.
- 10:26Speaker 1: And how does the band start to form up? Like
- 10:29Speaker 1: when it started out, how does a band even start?
- 10:31Speaker 1: Because I'm used to just hearing some guys like get together,
- 10:35Speaker 1: write down a song or whatever, and then just kind
- 10:39Speaker 1: of get in a fight at somebody's house, and then
- 10:41Speaker 1: the band is done. Mm-hmm.
- 10:43Speaker 2: We do that we just haven't quit yet.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Plenty of fights have happened now it's I had actually
- 10:49Speaker 3: met Drew right when I was still in high school
- 10:54Speaker 3: and then Drew introduced me to Andrew and we had
- 10:58Speaker 3: started a little cover band Drew the guitar player he
- 11:01Speaker 3: was actually the manager at the time and you know
- 11:05Speaker 3: that band played for a while and we had actually
- 11:08Speaker 3: hired John in that band and he played for a
- 11:12Speaker 3: couple of months before it dissolved. And then we hired Zach,
- 11:16Speaker 3: our guitar player, and started calling ourselves Red Clay Strays.
- 11:20Speaker 3: And then Drew, eventually we learned that he could sing
- 11:23Speaker 3: and he was learning how to play guitar at the time.
- 11:26Speaker 3: So we started getting Drew to come on stage with us.
- 11:28Speaker 3: And when he first started getting on stage with us,
- 11:32Speaker 3: he kept his amp turned all the way down. He
- 11:34Speaker 3: wouldn't even actually play. Yeah, he was just really shy.
- 11:37Speaker 1: I didn't know there was a way. I didn't know
- 11:39Speaker 1: there was a way to be shy on there with
- 11:40Speaker 1: your band.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. He was faking it until he made it.
- 11:43Speaker 3: That's one thing that was cool to see is because
- 11:45Speaker 3: I lived with him, and he locked himself in his
- 11:48Speaker 3: room every day pretty much for like a year and
- 11:51Speaker 3: just taught himself how to play guitar.
- 11:53Speaker 4: Wow.
- 11:54Speaker 2: I used to tell him to stop playing, too. I
- 11:56Speaker 2: feel bad now. He'd be in there, and the old
- 11:59Speaker 2: band would be– And in practice, and he'd have like
- 12:02Speaker 2: a beer bottle just raking it across the strings, and
- 12:05Speaker 2: I'd just have to tell him like, dude, you gotta
- 12:07Speaker 2: give me a minute. You gotta stop. And now he's like,
- 12:11Speaker 2: Drew's one of those, he gets the most improvement award
- 12:15Speaker 2: every year for us.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Wow.
- 12:16Speaker 2: He just gets better and better, and it's just, he's good.
- 12:19Speaker 2: I wish I had his worth ethic when it came
- 12:21Speaker 2: to learning an instrument.
- 12:23Speaker 1: So it was just, so he was on with you guys,
- 12:26Speaker 1: and then he got better?
- 12:27Speaker 2: Well, he was the manager in our first band. And
- 12:31Speaker 2: then when Red Clay Strays started, the five of us
- 12:33Speaker 2: started that together. There he is, handsome devil there.
- 12:37Speaker 1: He's like, I got to get in here.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he just got it in his song.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Him and Brandon's little brother, Matthew, write our songs pretty
- 12:46Speaker 2: much 50-50, and Brandon writes some too. So I think
- 12:50Speaker 2: it's just natural in him. He just had to find
- 12:52Speaker 2: that way of getting it out.
- 12:53Speaker 3: I think what got him on stage was we noticed
- 12:56Speaker 3: he was singing harmonies at practice. So we're like, hey,
- 12:59Speaker 3: get on stage and start singing with us. And he
- 13:02Speaker 3: didn't want to just be standing on stage empty-handed, so
- 13:04Speaker 3: he would turn the guitar down and just hold the
- 13:06Speaker 3: guitar pretty much. And then somewhere along the line decided
- 13:10Speaker 3: that he wanted to start actually playing, so he taught himself.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Wow. That's amazing.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Zach, he's just always been incredible. Yeah, Zach's always been.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Yeah, Zach just come right in just ripping and shredding
- 13:20Speaker 3: and blowing everybody away. Now it's just surprising to see
- 13:25Speaker 3: that Drew and Zach, just two completely different styles and
- 13:28Speaker 3: how they've learned off of one another.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Over the years.
- 13:32Speaker 1: And so, like, in the past probably year, things have
- 13:34Speaker 1: started to get busier, right?
- 13:37Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:38Speaker 2: We've been, especially, I think things really started taking off
- 13:41Speaker 2: for us. We were actually off the road last year,
- 13:45Speaker 2: last fall in November, and we just see these numbers just, like,
- 13:48Speaker 2: on a rocket ship. Like, what the hell's going on? Yeah, we.
- 13:52Speaker 2: So it's just, we're just riding it out.
- 13:55Speaker 3: We hired my little brother, who is the other songwriter.
- 14:00Speaker 3: So we had already been playing all of his songs,
- 14:06Speaker 3: but he would do his own thing. And I think
- 14:08Speaker 3: he was driving for Uber at the time. And we
- 14:13Speaker 3: took him on the Elking run last year and then
- 14:16Speaker 3: officially hired him last April. And he just went right
- 14:19Speaker 3: to work recording us and monitoring our social medias and
- 14:25Speaker 3: building a social media presence. And then Popping off on TikTok,
- 14:29Speaker 3: I think, a couple times, really.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:31Speaker 3: That with the El Tour just kind of jump-started it
- 14:32Speaker 3: a little bit for us.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Yeah, he does a great job because there's a lot
- 14:35Speaker 1: of fun clips on there. You guys have some cool
- 14:37Speaker 1: stuff on YouTube and stuff that I hadn't heard that
- 14:39Speaker 1: wasn't released yet, just like on Spotify and stuff.
- 14:43Speaker 2: That used to be how we toured. Yeah, we toured
- 14:45Speaker 2: off of YouTube.
- 14:46Speaker 3: We'd just tell people to call venues and tell them
- 14:48Speaker 3: to check out YouTube and Facebook.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Just, you know, hopefully they'd book us, and a lot
- 14:54Speaker 3: of them did, so.
- 14:56Speaker 2: That's what we did.
- 14:57Speaker 1: And when did you guys start touring pretty heavily? Kind
- 14:58Speaker 1: of like when did it?
- 15:00Speaker 2: Oh, shoot. We used to play. I mean, we'd tour.
- 15:02Speaker 2: We'd play 200 cap rooms. I remember getting excited for
- 15:05Speaker 2: 70 people showing up. I mean, we've always been. We
- 15:10Speaker 2: just wanted our big thing was going to be the
- 15:12Speaker 2: hardest working band in America. So we would. I mean, shoot.
- 15:16Speaker 2: For the last couple of years, we've played majority of
- 15:19Speaker 2: the year out on the road. especially last year, we
- 15:22Speaker 2: did over 150 shows driving ourselves. So it's like more
- 15:25Speaker 2: of like 250 travel days or more. And then that
- 15:28Speaker 2: was the same the year before we're just running around
- 15:31Speaker 2: breaking down and just excited for 50 people to be
- 15:34Speaker 2: in front of us. Gosh, it's crazy to look back
- 15:37Speaker 2: at that now. And they come, we, we always wanted
- 15:40Speaker 2: where the, where we are now, we kind of always
- 15:42Speaker 2: looked up to like, man, I want to play these clubs,
- 15:44Speaker 2: you know, these thousand, 2000 cat rooms every night. I
- 15:46Speaker 2: could get used to that, like opening for people. And
- 15:48Speaker 2: now we're there. And Now we're like, man, those arenas
- 15:50Speaker 2: look fun. How about getting used to doing that?
- 15:53Speaker 1: Yeah, or festivals. Do you guys do a lot of
- 15:57Speaker 1: festivals too? Well, that'll probably happen this summer.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Yeah, we do a lot of festivals. I don't know
- 16:01Speaker 2: if we really like festivals as much. We like doing
- 16:03Speaker 2: our own show. We're not pressed for time. Festivals, you
- 16:07Speaker 2: got to be on time with starting and ending, and
- 16:09Speaker 2: that's just kind of, we like to take our time
- 16:12Speaker 2: and relax.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Usually the set is really short too. It's like we
- 16:15Speaker 3: get 45 minutes, and it's like, I'm just now starting
- 16:18Speaker 3: to get warmed up at 45 minutes, you know, and
- 16:20Speaker 3: then it's over with.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and we're not headlining festivals. We're playing at like
- 16:24Speaker 2: 3 o'clock in the.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Afternoon, you know. Oh, yeah, sunburn time.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, we just did it in Tortuga and Fort Lauderdale.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, at the Heatstroke Festival or whatever?
- 16:32Speaker 2: The Heatstroke Festival, yeah. We just felt like we just
- 16:35Speaker 2: ruined everybody's beach party.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Oh, that's the worst.
- 16:37Speaker 2: We're up there playing sad songs.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Dude, I remember one night we had to play, I'm
- 16:42Speaker 1: thinking of, But one time they put us at this
- 16:46Speaker 1: Italian kind of cocaine sort of Christmas kind of party.
- 16:50Speaker 1: And it was– this was in L.A. It was probably
- 16:53Speaker 1: about like maybe seven years ago. Like are you guys
- 16:57Speaker 1: going to perform at this Christmas party?
- 16:59Speaker 2: This cocaine Christmas party?
- 17:00Speaker 1: Yeah, well, everybody– we get there early and everybody's trying
- 17:03Speaker 1: to get us to do cocaine. And we're doing it.
- 17:07Speaker 1: And then like we had to perform, but we thought
- 17:11Speaker 1: it would be like a stage and like a good setup.
- 17:14Speaker 1: So I think it had rained or something, and they
- 17:18Speaker 1: put this party in a tent, one of those white
- 17:22Speaker 1: tents with the fake plastic windows in it.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Yeah. And so we had to perform in there right
- 17:28Speaker 1: next to the tables. Some people's backs were like you
- 17:31Speaker 1: were on the curve of the table in their backs,
- 17:33Speaker 1: and they were eating.
- 17:34Speaker 3: You were doing stand-up in there?
- 17:35Speaker 2: Oh, it was so— You just feel like you're just
- 17:36Speaker 2: in the way. It was so hard. Especially high on cocaine,
- 17:40Speaker 2: I'm sure, too.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Oh, it made me so scared and nervous. And some
- 17:45Speaker 1: lady kept kind of biting her lip at me. And, oh,
- 17:50Speaker 1: that was one of the worst moments that ever happened.
- 17:53Speaker 2: She was probably doing the cocaine, too. That was probably
- 17:55Speaker 2: that jaw thing that goes on, you know.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Everybody in there was.
- 17:57Speaker 2: You're probably misreading that one.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Everybody was rattling. Rattling. Everybody in there definitely had a
- 18:03Speaker 1: catalytic converter issue. It was just, but that was a
- 18:08Speaker 1: tough gig, man.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Yeah, we've had those. Those tough gigs make you humble, though.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 18:14Speaker 2: I mean, we just had a... Go ahead, Brandon. I
- 18:16Speaker 2: don't think I know what you're going to talk about.
- 18:17Speaker 2: I was going to talk about the Purple Buffalo. I
- 18:19Speaker 2: was going to talk about Dallas Cowboys. Was that a
- 18:22Speaker 2: corporate gig you did?
- 18:24Speaker 1: No, I've done some really bad ones like that.
- 18:26Speaker 2: I hate corporate gigs, man. Corporate shows are terrible, yeah.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Some guy made his son come up and give us
- 18:31Speaker 1: $ 10 one night when we were on stage, and we
- 18:32Speaker 1: were performing like an empty backyard.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Really?
- 18:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:35Speaker 2: And you're doing comedy?
- 18:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:38Speaker 2: I've never seen someone tip a comedian on stage.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Oh, live. This kid ran across a child.
- 18:44Speaker 3: Go give that nice man $ 10. And I've had those shows, too,
- 18:48Speaker 3: where it's just like you're in someone's backyard and they're
- 18:51Speaker 3: not paying attention. But at least there's music and it's
- 18:53Speaker 3: super loud and you can drown all that out. I
- 18:55Speaker 3: can only imagine being in that setting trying to tell
- 18:58Speaker 3: jokes and nobody's paying attention to you. I don't know
- 19:02Speaker 3: how you keep it together, man. I'd have an anxiety
- 19:04Speaker 3: attack just trying to.
- 19:06Speaker 1: It just, you're like, yeah, this is what I deserve.
- 19:09Speaker 1: That's where it kind of ends with he, you know.
- 19:10Speaker 1: The tough part about the kid was he kept running
- 19:12Speaker 1: across like halfway and then got confused with what to do.
- 19:15Speaker 1: And he would go back and ask his dad. So
- 19:18Speaker 1: it was just like, just give me the $ 10 or
- 19:21Speaker 1: I'll come get it. But I can't.
- 19:23Speaker 2: It was like I was. Did you just take it
- 19:25Speaker 2: from him and he started crying?
- 19:26Speaker 1: I was just like.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Don't drop out of school, kid. Thanks.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Oh, that was a really tough one.
- 19:32Speaker 3: That's putting the grind in though, man.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Oh, dude, I used to drive at 110
- 19:36Speaker 1: miles an hour to get to the next gig, putting
- 19:37Speaker 1: everyone's life in danger so that I could perform at
- 19:40Speaker 1: like an O'Charlie's somewhere or something. It was like everybody.
- 19:46Speaker 1: It was very.
- 19:47Speaker 2: We used to have our Mexican restaurant gigs way back
- 19:50Speaker 2: in the day doing four-hour cover shows.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Oh, that sounds fun.
- 19:53Speaker 2: It's not. It's fun for a minute for at least
- 19:56Speaker 2: the first hour.
- 19:57Speaker 3: There was one right before COVID had happened, and it
- 19:59Speaker 3: was a place called the Purple Buffalo.
- 20:02Speaker 2: North Charleston.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Yeah, and we played right after this heavy metal.
- 20:07Speaker 2: No, it was like a punk rock show. Yeah, like
- 20:10Speaker 2: a punk rock show. Three punk rock bands before us.
- 20:13Speaker 2: And then you? And then us.
- 20:14Speaker 3: And we're playing covers at the time, too. Our country
- 20:18Speaker 3: bumpkin butts just get up there and just start playing music.
- 20:21Speaker 3: The room just empties out, and we're literally playing to nobody.
- 20:25Speaker 3: I just go out in the crowd. Well, where the
- 20:27Speaker 3: crowd would be. I'm sitting where the crowd would be,
- 20:29Speaker 3: and I'm just sitting at the table singing to the
- 20:31Speaker 3: band as they're playing. And then the whole time the
- 20:34Speaker 3: bartender was like offering us drinks. And we're broke at
- 20:38Speaker 3: the time, too. And we're just thinking, oh, cool. At
- 20:40Speaker 3: least we got a bar tab.
- 20:41Speaker 2: At least we're going to get the drink tonight. And
- 20:42Speaker 2: then after the show, she just brings us the bill.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Oh, man. We didn't even get paid to play.
- 20:47Speaker 3: Didn't make any money.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Yeah. We're like looking around the bus for change. Pay
- 20:51Speaker 2: our bar tab at this place. Just drank ourselves. There's
- 20:54Speaker 2: a picture of an actual purple buffalo. I prefer that one.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, that's nice.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Oh, that's what the place looks like with people in it.
- 21:01Speaker 2: That's kind of cool.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Oh, I've met her before. Ocean parties, dude.
- 21:07Speaker 2: We've definitely had those empty shows where you just play
- 21:13Speaker 2: for yourselves.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:14Speaker 2: That's when you really got to enjoy what you're doing.
- 21:17Speaker 3: We used to play for tips. Our tip bucket determined
- 21:21Speaker 3: how far we were going to get the next day.
- 21:22Speaker 3: We'd have no money, and You know, we'd get tip
- 21:25Speaker 3: money for gas and maybe even one hotel room for
- 21:28Speaker 3: all five of us to pile up in.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Nuh-uh.
- 21:30Speaker 3: And it was just chance every day, you know.
- 21:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Damn.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Stayed in a lot of people's houses or even slept
- 21:37Speaker 3: in the car a couple times before we got our
- 21:40Speaker 3: shuttle bus, that is, the Breeze.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Yeah. I wouldn't say we're successful. We're not where we
- 21:45Speaker 2: are from overnight, I guess.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Yeah. I think that's what I was trying to get
- 21:49Speaker 1: at a little bit, just like thinking about all this stuff.
- 21:51Speaker 1: It's funny, a lot of times I'll forget about a
- 21:54Speaker 1: lot of that. Oh, yeah. In a weird way.
- 21:56Speaker 2: You can take it for granted pretty easily.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it's weird for me. I don't even know if
- 22:00Speaker 1: I take it, I just forget. It's like you forget
- 22:02Speaker 1: the work that you've put into something.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:05Speaker 1: You know?
- 22:06Speaker 3: Me and you have been doing this since 2015. So,
- 22:10Speaker 3: you know, seven years, eight years.
- 22:13Speaker 2: I was in college, too. Nine years for me and you.
- 22:15Speaker 2: I'm thinking of just Red Clay Strays. Red Clay Strays.
- 22:18Speaker 1: And the band before that, what was it called?
- 22:20Speaker 2: Coleman Mason Band. It was just a local cover band.
- 22:23Speaker 2: A band we don't speak of.
- 22:26Speaker 3: Really? We would run the crowd out.
- 22:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:30Speaker 1: I love that. Hey, look. Then Red Clash Race brought
- 22:33Speaker 1: them back in.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Yeah, we're coming as the bar closer, man. They want
- 22:37Speaker 2: to get them out, we got them out.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Oh, I love that, dude. It's like instead of playing
- 22:41Speaker 1: closing time, it's like, let's hire this band.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Yeah, they'll get them out.
- 22:45Speaker 1: They'll get them out.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Hey, you want to shut this thing down, we got you.
- 22:47Speaker 3: Which even with... which we mainly ran people away cause we,
- 22:51Speaker 3: it was so loud. The guitar amps were so loud,
- 22:53Speaker 3: but even with, uh, red clay strays, we would be,
- 22:57Speaker 3: we were playing somewhere in, uh, at, uh, in Arkansas
- 23:02Speaker 3: where the guy, the sound man come up on stage
- 23:05Speaker 3: and he told us to turn down. And I was like,
- 23:08Speaker 3: the only thing running through this system that you're wanting
- 23:10Speaker 3: to turn down is my vocals. Like the drums are
- 23:12Speaker 3: still going to be loud. The guitar is still going
- 23:14Speaker 3: to be loud. And so I'll walk over there and
- 23:16Speaker 3: I inch it down just a little bit. And, you know,
- 23:19Speaker 3: continue playing. And he just like walks on after a
- 23:22Speaker 3: song just right in the middle of the set. So
- 23:23Speaker 3: we're not doing this tonight. And he just walks up
- 23:25Speaker 3: and turns everything down by itself. And I was just like, man,
- 23:28Speaker 3: if I didn't need this $ 500, I would freaking leave
- 23:31Speaker 3: right now.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Oh, we used to talk a mad game. It was
- 23:34Speaker 2: a pack up and leave.
- 23:35Speaker 3: That was at a restaurant too.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Yeah, that was in JJ's in Little Rock, Arkansas. Was
- 23:40Speaker 2: that Little Rock? No, that was Fayetteville, Arkansas.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the tough part. When you're going to compete
- 23:46Speaker 1: with people's moment to dine.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, that's a dinner, yeah, those suck.
- 23:51Speaker 1: When you're gonna say, hey, set that fork down for
- 23:55Speaker 1: a second, mama. I got something for you.
- 23:58Speaker 2: We'll give you a pork chop.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Can you turn the music down? Can you tell them
- 24:02Speaker 3: to turn it down? That's what playing with people eating
- 24:05Speaker 3: is like.
- 24:05Speaker 2: And we used to do our own sound, too, so
- 24:07Speaker 2: we used to make it real loud. Because we grew
- 24:09Speaker 2: up listening to, like, Skinner, and we thought that's how
- 24:11Speaker 2: it was supposed to be.
- 24:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Just loud.
- 24:13Speaker 2: We're still pretty loud. Yeah, we are probably still pretty loud.
- 24:16Speaker 1: You know, the number one thing I think that's tough
- 24:18Speaker 1: sometimes if I go into like a small venue or
- 24:22Speaker 1: just like a bar and somebody's playing is if you
- 24:25Speaker 1: can't hear the vocals a lot of times.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 24:28Speaker 1: It sucks. Because you're like, I might love this.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Yeah, that's why we try to hire a good sound guy. Dude,
- 24:36Speaker 2: the sound guy is what, I mean, he's practically a
- 24:39Speaker 2: member of the band. He's making you sound good for everybody.
- 24:42Speaker 2: And we've been to a lot of big concerts. We're like,
- 24:44Speaker 2: this sounds like crap. And this sucks because we know
- 24:46Speaker 2: how good that band is.
- 24:47Speaker 3: It doesn't matter how good the music is. If you
- 24:49Speaker 3: can't understand or can't hear something, then it's pointless.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Yeah, a lot of venues aren't really built for comedy
- 24:57Speaker 1: or music where you have to end up playing, too,
- 24:58Speaker 1: which is kind of wild. You know, like recently I
- 25:01Speaker 1: went to some places and the venue just wasn't... It's
- 25:04Speaker 1: not the perfect venue, but it's the only one in
- 25:06Speaker 1: that area that you can play.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Yeah, we've been to those where you walk in and
- 25:11Speaker 2: the reverb and... Then the room's just ridiculous. You just
- 25:15Speaker 2: know you're just going to blow these people's heads off.
- 25:18Speaker 2: That's part of it.

- 27:42Speaker 1: the name of the band, how'd you guys figure that out?
- 27:45Speaker 2: Man, that story's not even that cool. You'd think it
- 27:47Speaker 2: would be.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Well, Red Clay's all over Alabama. Yeah. You know, you
- 27:51Speaker 1: get over anywhere over there.
- 27:53Speaker 2: I didn't like the name at first. I don't think
- 27:54Speaker 2: any of us liked any name we came up with.
- 27:56Speaker 1: What were some other options?
- 27:58Speaker 2: Oh, dude, one the band likes a lot, Brandon Lane
- 28:00Speaker 2: and the Hurricanes. We on the Gulf Coast, we got Hurricanes,
- 28:03Speaker 2: that's his middle name, Lane.
- 28:05Speaker 1: I love that.
- 28:07Speaker 2: I liked it too. That'll be the alter ego. The
- 28:09Speaker 2: alter ego. No, but my brother came up with it
- 28:12Speaker 2: just randomly.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Brandon Lane and the Hurricanes, Red Clay Strays.
- 28:17Speaker 2: We had the Dirt Leg Trio for a little while
- 28:18Speaker 2: when it was just me, Brandon, and John. Yeah, Dirt Leg.
- 28:21Speaker 2: The Dirt Leg Trio. We're from South Alabama. We're not
- 28:24Speaker 2: good at making up names.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Yeah, that one I think is a little bit, that's
- 28:28Speaker 1: like a gangrene. That feels more like an infection. Staff,
- 28:33Speaker 1: the Staff Boys.
- 28:34Speaker 2: The Staff Boys.
- 28:36Speaker 3: Something I got from my job, it's like they wouldn't say,
- 28:39Speaker 3: you redneck. They'd say, you dirt leg.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Dirt leg.
- 28:41Speaker 2: That's worse than redneck. What is a dirt leg?
- 28:43Speaker 3: And they're like, well, here's a redneck, and then here's
- 28:45Speaker 3: a dirt leg. It's like trashier, worse of a person,
- 28:50Speaker 3: steal from you. They're a dirt leg.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Damn. We would have somebody call, yeah, we'd call like
- 28:54Speaker 1: a dirt serpent. That's Kid Rock, we call him.
- 28:57Speaker 2: I would say, yeah, I'd say Kid Rock falls in
- 28:59Speaker 2: that dirt leg category. Yeah. But he's a dirt serpent.
- 29:02Speaker 2: I just described a lot of bad stuff. I know,
- 29:04Speaker 2: I'm just joking.
- 29:05Speaker 1: No, he's like, yeah, he's more of a dirt serpent. Yeah.
- 29:08Speaker 1: He's like a leader of a, you know, of a club.
- 29:11Speaker 2: Yeah, you just had him not tell. Oh, there's a, whoa,
- 29:13Speaker 2: he brought up the Urban Dictionary.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Dirt leg, a female looking for a quick fuck. Who
- 29:18Speaker 1: only has enough time to take one pant leg off.
- 29:21Speaker 2: Oh, God. That's not what I heard.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Getting the other pant leg dirty.
- 29:26Speaker 2: All right. Dirt leg. All right.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Yeah, they just put that TikTok ban into.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Yeah, we actually, on the way down here, or on
- 29:35Speaker 2: the way up here, we actually just saw that.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Were you guys seeing that?
- 29:38Speaker 3: I've seen it on Instagram.
- 29:39Speaker 2: Yeah, we saw it on the news.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Let me see. Congress had passed the bill this week
- 29:42Speaker 1: as part of a wide-ranging foreign aid package meant to
- 29:44Speaker 1: support Israel and Ukraine. It was approved by the House
- 29:46Speaker 1: on Saturday and by the Senate on Tuesday.
- 29:49Speaker 2: And it also had TikTok hidden in it. Is that
- 29:50Speaker 2: what it's saying?
- 29:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Welcome to our government.
- 29:53Speaker 1: I know.
- 29:53Speaker 2: They always be doing that. Ain't reading that fine print, people.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Now we lost TikTok. It's going to suck if it
- 29:58Speaker 2: actually goes away, though.
- 30:00Speaker 4: I know.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Man, there's got to be something behind it. Even our
- 30:02Speaker 2: band has grown so much from TikTok. I don't even
- 30:06Speaker 2: be ticking the talk. I'm not even on it.
- 30:08Speaker 1: It's fun. It's dangerous because you can get into a
- 30:11Speaker 1: warp zone where you look up and suddenly your family
- 30:15Speaker 1: hasn't eaten. I could see that easily. Somebody's scrolling on
- 30:19Speaker 1: TikTok and then they're just– They look up and their
- 30:21Speaker 1: children haven't eaten.
- 30:22Speaker 2: That's what they need to scroll with, the death scroll.
- 30:24Speaker 2: Death scroll. Instagram or TikTok. See, I get all my
- 30:26Speaker 2: reels from Instagram and my fiance gets mad because I'm
- 30:28Speaker 2: like six months behind.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Oh yeah, y'all are behind over there.
- 30:32Speaker 2: I do the YouTube shorts too. That's my death scroll.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 30:35Speaker 2: So I'm getting like eight months, nine months behind.
- 30:38Speaker 1: Yeah, you're in hospice.
- 30:39Speaker 3: The reason I like TikTok is, you can ask him,
- 30:42Speaker 3: all of my Instagram stuff is just messed up people.
- 30:45Speaker 2: We get dark. Our Instagram reels get dark.
- 30:47Speaker 3: People get in motorcycle wrecks and just, A lot of
- 30:50Speaker 3: crazy stuff that I'm like, how is this on Instagram?
- 30:52Speaker 2: We done screwed our algorithms up. But then TikTok is like, well,
- 30:54Speaker 2: here's how you make a garden in your backyard, or
- 30:56Speaker 2: here's how you... For now, until you get on the
- 30:58Speaker 2: dark side of TikTok.
- 30:59Speaker 1: I haven't been on the dark side of TikTok. Damn,
- 31:00Speaker 1: I don't want to.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Get over there. Don't start searching things.
- 31:03Speaker 1: What are some things? Look under some of my links.
- 31:05Speaker 1: I have a couple of favorites that I've had on
- 31:07Speaker 1: there recently. Oh, here we go right here. Now, this
- 31:09Speaker 1: was something I saw.
- 31:14Speaker 2: How's a cat dog? Is that a cat? That's an
- 31:23Speaker 2: odd way to explain what.
- 31:23Speaker 1: A cat is. That thing ate a ruler, homie, that thing.
- 31:28Speaker 2: That's a different ethnicity of a cat.
- 31:29Speaker 1: You see that one? Cat got your measuring stick, huh?
- 31:32Speaker 1: That thing's out of town.
- 31:35Speaker 2: That was a wiener dog at first.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Yeah, it is. That's a damn wiener cat.
- 31:38Speaker 2: Wiener cat. Wiener cat, dude. You don't want to see
- 31:41Speaker 2: our recent searches. Really?
- 31:42Speaker 1: It gets pretty bad? It gets pretty bad. Well, those
- 31:44Speaker 1: are just some of them. That's one of my faves.
- 31:45Speaker 1: I'll go through a couple more.
- 31:46Speaker 2: What, the cat videos?
- 31:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Well, yeah, we might as well enjoy TikTok while we
- 31:51Speaker 2: got it because we ain't going to have it much longer.
- 31:53Speaker 1: And that's Asian guy walking with turtle, and that's always
- 31:56Speaker 1: a beautiful... That's really... You have a very wholesome algorithm.
- 32:00Speaker 1: That's like the notebook in Japan, dude. That video right there.
- 32:04Speaker 1: It's their notebook. What else do we have?
- 32:06Speaker 2: Oh, look at that.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Oh, this guy's a little nativity scene on the go.
- 32:13Speaker 1: This is like DoorDash nativity scene. Play it one more time.
- 32:15Speaker 2: Is that all it is? Yeah.
- 32:16Speaker 1: It's like 40 bucks the dude pulls up. Oh.
- 32:21Speaker 2: It's like those things at the fair.
- 32:22Speaker 3: Does he have an actual little baby he could start
- 32:24Speaker 3: using too for Christmas?
- 32:25Speaker 1: Probably. If his wife, maybe, if he's probably got to
- 32:28Speaker 1: ask his wife.
- 32:28Speaker 2: Reminds me of those booths at the fair. You pay
- 32:30Speaker 2: like 20 bucks to go see the snake lady.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 32:34Speaker 2: You walk in, it's just like a.
- 32:35Speaker 1: We just had a carnival worker on, and his grandfather
- 32:38Speaker 1: was the great Lentini, and he had three legs and
- 32:42Speaker 1: two penises.
- 32:45Speaker 4: Okay.
- 32:45Speaker 1: I thought that was his third one.
- 32:47Speaker 2: Well endowed.
- 32:48Speaker 1: No, that's what people thought at first. Like, damn, one
- 32:50Speaker 1: of these things needs a shoe on it.
- 32:52Speaker 2: Oh, this is real.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Yeah, this is a real guy, Frank Lentini right there. Wow.
- 32:57Speaker 2: He's got his own Wikipedia. But wait, you said his dad?
- 33:01Speaker 1: The carnival worker that we had in named Mitch, he
- 33:04Speaker 1: had a granddaddy.
- 33:07Speaker 2: Okay, because that guy was born in 1889.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Yeah, this guy.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Where is he from?
- 33:14Speaker 1: Damn, Narnia probably. It's called.
- 33:17Speaker 2: That's the stuff you see in, like, the Marvel movies, though, man. Dude,
- 33:19Speaker 2: I bet that dude could run a foot race, play soccer.
- 33:22Speaker 3: I bet he could climb up walls and stuff.
- 33:24Speaker 1: Oh, I bet that dude.
- 33:25Speaker 2: That's a modern-day Spider-Man.
- 33:26Speaker 1: That's what I was going to say. I bet he
- 33:27Speaker 1: lived in a web.
- 33:28Speaker 2: That would be, yeah. I can't think of one nude
- 33:31Speaker 2: picture of this man. I wonder what his attitude was.
- 33:34Speaker 2: You think he had, like, a temper when he'd get
- 33:36Speaker 2: in bar fights and just start kicking people?
- 33:38Speaker 1: That's a great call, huh? It would be crazy if
- 33:41Speaker 1: you're standing there talking to him and then one of
- 33:42Speaker 1: his foot just puts a cigarette into his mouth.
- 33:45Speaker 2: You know, this is what the UFC is missing right here.
- 33:47Speaker 1: It really is.
- 33:47Speaker 3: What if you think the weirdos, like the people from Nick,
- 33:51Speaker 3: who have like feet things, they've seen this guy.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Oh, on Foot Finder, this guy would have been, yeah.
- 33:57Speaker 2: A spokesman.
- 33:59Speaker 1: Oh, he would have been the Naomi Campbell.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Of Foot Finder. Three legs, four feet, 16 toes.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Come see him, boy.
- 34:05Speaker 2: That math ain't adding. That math ain't mathing, is it?
- 34:08Speaker 1: Different time, different math.
- 34:09Speaker 3: Now, didn't they ban all that?
- 34:10Speaker 2: 15, he had one extra.
- 34:12Speaker 3: Didn't they ban, like, you can't show yourself off in
- 34:15Speaker 3: carnivals and stuff?
- 34:16Speaker 1: Like freak shows? Did they ban them? I thought they did.
- 34:18Speaker 2: It was considered inhumane. Well, what if you, like, sign
- 34:21Speaker 2: yourself up? It didn't matter. They banned it anyway.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Freak shows remained popular until the 1940s when public opinion
- 34:27Speaker 1: began to shift. Throughout the 20th century, several federal laws
- 34:30Speaker 1: made discrimination against people with physical disabilities illegal. and the
- 34:34Speaker 1: exhibition of extraordinary bodies was outlawed in some states. Wow.
- 34:38Speaker 2: Now that seems a little prejudiced.
- 34:40Speaker 3: What I read was the freaks in the freak shows
- 34:42Speaker 3: got mad because they were like, this is how we
- 34:44Speaker 3: make a living.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Yeah, of course.
- 34:45Speaker 3: People pay to look at me. But I don't know
- 34:47Speaker 3: how true that was.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Well, it's like the Redskins now having to probably change
- 34:51Speaker 2: their name back because the natives got mad at them
- 34:53Speaker 2: for changing it.
- 34:54Speaker 1: Oh, they did now?
- 34:55Speaker 2: That's what I've read, yeah.
- 34:56Speaker 3: They're trying to change it back now?
- 34:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Supposedly.
- 34:59Speaker 1: Wow, my friend Cliff Kingsbury is coaching up there. It's
- 35:02Speaker 1: his first year up there. offensive coordinator.
- 35:05Speaker 2: I graduated college with the safety, Jeremy Reeves.
- 35:08Speaker 4: Oh, wow.
- 35:09Speaker 2: I did sports medicine in college, so I did some
- 35:11Speaker 2: of his rehabilitation.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Damn, and is he healthy now? Yeah.
- 35:14Speaker 2: Well, he just came off an injury, but he's good. Damn.
- 35:17Speaker 2: Good enough to be playing with the commanders.
- 35:20Speaker 1: Which, who knows if that's that good? We'll see.
- 35:23Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Remains to be seen.
- 35:25Speaker 2: He's getting paid.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Yeah, which states outlawed those shows? That's kind of interesting.
- 35:32Speaker 1: I wonder if it was like Like who would do it?
- 35:36Speaker 1: I wonder what states would do it. Southern states or.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Well, I wonder if they looked at it as like
- 35:40Speaker 2: you're just.
- 35:41Speaker 3: It's hard to imagine the political demographic back then in
- 35:44Speaker 3: the 40s.
- 35:44Speaker 2: I wonder if it's like you're bringing like... You can't
- 35:46Speaker 2: really call them special. It's like handicapped people and making
- 35:49Speaker 2: a show of them. But what if they sign up
- 35:51Speaker 2: and they want to make the show themselves?
- 35:53Speaker 1: Well, they have the same thing type of now where it's...
- 35:57Speaker 1: They have like a lot of people with what some
- 36:02Speaker 1: people call disabilities... have like uh shows on tiktok or
- 36:07Speaker 1: social media channels tlc yeah tlc their whole network is
- 36:12Speaker 1: based off of people with four um necks or whatever
- 36:18Speaker 1: you know or double you know.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Do you ever watch my my strange addiction that was
- 36:23Speaker 2: when i watched when i was younger it'd be like
- 36:24Speaker 2: lady drinking gasoline oh yeah one lady liked to eat
- 36:27Speaker 2: toilet paper oh she ate the foam out the mattress
- 36:30Speaker 2: She was a big one, too. Went straight to her hips.
- 36:32Speaker 2: She sure did.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Damn, really? Mm-hmm. Damn, boy.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Like Squidward with them Krabby Patties. You got to watch out.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Pimperpedic, baby. I like them thickies, baby.
- 36:41Speaker 2: I think she ate the springs, too. You'd have to
- 36:44Speaker 2: look that one up later.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Well, we spoke with a man the other day who
- 36:47Speaker 1: ate glass.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Was it on the street or was it on the podcast?
- 36:51Speaker 1: I can't remember. But, yeah, he's had a lot of it.
- 36:57Speaker 1: You know? I don't like anything like that. I would.
- 37:00Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Yeah. With the demise of the carnival, an important slice
- 37:03Speaker 1: of American history is being lost, but the residents of Gibsonton, Florida,
- 37:09Speaker 1: are trying to keep the legacy of the town's famous
- 37:11Speaker 1: freaks alive.
- 37:12Speaker 2: I think a town of freaks.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:15Speaker 2: It is Florida.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Gibtown was a utopia. Its first settlers, the giant and
- 37:19Speaker 1: his wife, the half-woman, ran a campsite, a bake shop,
- 37:22Speaker 1: and the fire department. Wow.
- 37:25Speaker 3: There's a whole town of the freak show.
- 37:27Speaker 1: In the golden days of American Carnival, all roads led
- 37:30Speaker 1: to Gibsonton, Florida. The self-defined 14,900-inhabitant town 12 miles south
- 37:36Speaker 1: of Tampa became the industry capital, Carnetown.
- 37:40Speaker 2: They must have been next to one of those power plants.
- 37:44Speaker 3: It makes me wonder, though, if it became illegal to
- 37:49Speaker 3: stare at freaks in a freak show, but it's okay
- 37:54Speaker 3: to go watch... mentally handicapped people in the Olympics and stuff.
- 37:59Speaker 3: Why is one acceptable and one's not?
- 38:01Speaker 1: That's a good question. Yeah.
- 38:05Speaker 3: Is it just because one's doing sports and the other's
- 38:07Speaker 3: just sitting on a couch?
- 38:09Speaker 2: Shoot, juggling. I've seen some stuff. You've probably seen him juggling.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Yeah, you would think, like... That's a sport. Dude, I
- 38:15Speaker 1: think it's like, it doesn't even... People with handicaps are more... Like,
- 38:20Speaker 1: if you watch this show with dating under the influence
- 38:24Speaker 1: of Down syndrome or whatever, what is it called? Down
- 38:27Speaker 1: for love, right?
- 38:28Speaker 2: I've heard of it.
- 38:29Speaker 1: You're close. Dating on.
- 38:30Speaker 2: I've never watched it, but I've heard of it.
- 38:32Speaker 1: It's amazing, right? And it's just like, it's people that
- 38:34Speaker 1: have disabilities. Some of them are down syndrome and they
- 38:36Speaker 1: don't want first dates, right? And they start to learn relationships.
- 38:40Speaker 1: And they are just as awkward as anybody that doesn't
- 38:44Speaker 1: have the disabilities, you know? In fact, sometimes they are
- 38:50Speaker 1: better at dating than people that have disabilities because... They're
- 38:54Speaker 1: a little bit more frank about what's going on.
- 38:56Speaker 2: A little more open, a little more bold about it.
- 38:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. That's fascinating. That show's fascinating. I was just
- 39:01Speaker 1: watching Baby Reindeer. Have you seen that?
- 39:04Speaker 2: Mm-mm. We don't watch cable. I don't really have a
- 39:07Speaker 2: lot of time to watch TV.
- 39:09Speaker 1: Damn, I'm living in damn luxury here.
- 39:12Speaker 2: We ain't got cable.
- 39:13Speaker 3: I try to watch stuff on the bus, but I
- 39:15Speaker 3: usually just end up falling asleep.
- 39:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that's impossible.
- 39:18Speaker 2: What's Baby Reindeer about?
- 39:20Speaker 1: Baby Reindeer. It's this guy, Richard Gad is his name.
- 39:24Speaker 1: And he writes this, it's amazing. It's like eight episodes
- 39:29Speaker 1: or six episodes. It's about he had a stalker, and
- 39:35Speaker 1: it goes from there.
- 39:36Speaker 2: It's British. Is there a reindeer involved?
- 39:41Speaker 1: It just, they said he looks like a reindeer.
- 39:43Speaker 2: There's a baby reindeer.
- 39:44Speaker 1: It looks like a reindeer. Interesting.
- 39:47Speaker 2: That sounds cool.
- 39:47Speaker 1: You guys have one full album out, right? Yeah. And
- 39:53Speaker 1: now you're putting together another album.
- 39:55Speaker 2: It's put together.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Oh, it's done?
- 39:57Speaker 2: It's done.
- 39:58Speaker 1: Okay.
- 39:58Speaker 2: It's ready to come out.
- 39:59Speaker 3: It'll be coming out here in the very near future.
- 40:02Speaker 4: Wow.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Hopefully by the end of summertime.
- 40:04Speaker 1: How does that feel? What's that? Because that's really.
- 40:10Speaker 3: I can't wait for people to hear it because it's
- 40:13Speaker 3: just a lot better of an album than the first
- 40:15Speaker 3: album as far as production goes.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Because we recorded it with Dave Cobb.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Chris Stapleton.
- 40:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:22Speaker 2: He's done all our heroes.
- 40:25Speaker 3: It's been a, it was always a goal of ours
- 40:27Speaker 3: to work with Dave since we very first started.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Yeah, there he is. And now how does that come
- 40:32Speaker 1: to pass that you guys get to match up with him?
- 40:34Speaker 1: Does he reach out to you? Do you start to
- 40:37Speaker 1: interview a series of producers?
- 40:40Speaker 3: No, we actually, at the time, we were looking up studios.
- 40:44Speaker 3: So we wanted to go to a studio where the
- 40:47Speaker 3: Alabama Shakes recorded their first album. I think it was
- 40:49Speaker 3: called the Bomb Shelter.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Here in Nashville. In Nashville.
- 40:52Speaker 3: And that was the plan until Brandon Molden, who works
- 40:58Speaker 3: with Conway Entertainment, which is where our manager works, made
- 41:01Speaker 3: the connection. He reached out to Dave for us and
- 41:03Speaker 3: he was like, hey, we represent this band if you're
- 41:06Speaker 3: interested in working with them.
- 41:07Speaker 2: And Dave knew who we were.
- 41:08Speaker 3: And so he was like, yeah, I'd love to work
- 41:11Speaker 3: with them. And then he set up a Zoom call
- 41:13Speaker 3: with us and reached out and We talked to him
- 41:16Speaker 3: that day. We were actually on the way to a show.
- 41:18Speaker 3: We had to pull over on the side of the
- 41:19Speaker 3: road and talk with him.
- 41:21Speaker 1: Wow, so the van wouldn't make such a noise.
- 41:24Speaker 2: He could talk. It was so loud in there. We
- 41:26Speaker 2: stopped for some barbecue, too, so I'm eating a barbecue
- 41:29Speaker 2: sandwich talking to Tim.
- 41:30Speaker 3: But there was no service, so we're walking around trying
- 41:32Speaker 3: to get service during this because it's like we're talking
- 41:34Speaker 3: to one of our heroes in the middle of Alabama
- 41:36Speaker 3: in the middle of nowhere.
- 41:38Speaker 1: You're like, these guys can't even produce a call. They're
- 41:41Speaker 1: not going to make anything.
- 41:42Speaker 2: We were probably somewhere in Alabama, too.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Wow, that had to be a pretty magical moment.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Yeah, that was.
- 41:48Speaker 3: Didn't know how to feel about it. It was crazy.
- 41:50Speaker 2: We don't really like the first record that's out. I
- 41:54Speaker 2: cannot stand to go back and listen to it.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Really?
- 41:56Speaker 2: At all. It was such a cluster making that thing.
- 42:00Speaker 2: I like it for what it is. Yeah, for what
- 42:03Speaker 2: it is.
- 42:03Speaker 3: We'd just gotten out of another record deal that wasn't
- 42:07Speaker 3: working for us and the only way to continue forward
- 42:10Speaker 3: was to get out of it so we finally made
- 42:13Speaker 3: it out of that thing and then just on our own,
- 42:15Speaker 3: not knowing what to do. And, you know, we go
- 42:17Speaker 3: to this guy's studio in.
- 42:21Speaker 2: Huntsville. Sink every dollar we had.
- 42:23Speaker 3: Go into debt making it, and that's eventually. We were
- 42:26Speaker 3: still unhappy with it trying to make it, but eventually
- 42:29Speaker 3: we just had to, you know, call it quits and
- 42:31Speaker 3: say it's done.
- 42:32Speaker 2: Was that because of money?
- 42:33Speaker 1: Yeah, money and time.
- 42:36Speaker 2: Yeah, we didn't put all this work in this window
- 42:38Speaker 2: of time. We opened up for it. So this next one, though?
- 42:43Speaker 2: We listen to it every day, I think, and it's incredible. Yeah,
- 42:47Speaker 2: I haven't gotten tired of it yet. Yeah, we're ready
- 42:49Speaker 2: to put that one out. It should be pretty good.
- 42:51Speaker 2: Or the people will hate it. We don't know.
- 42:54Speaker 1: I can't even imagine. Yeah, when y'all's music comes on, man,
- 42:57Speaker 1: it just feels good. Can we listen? Will you take
- 43:01Speaker 1: me through who comes in on Wonder and Why, like
- 43:03Speaker 1: in the beginning, just in the beginning, so I know
- 43:04Speaker 1: who the different... Because you guys have different band members.
- 43:07Speaker 1: I want to make sure that I get the gist.
- 43:10Speaker 1: Can you play it for us by chance?
- 43:11Speaker 2: Do you want to do it in the headphones?
- 43:12Speaker 1: Let me just play it.
- 43:13Speaker 2: Through the... You can play it through the speaker. We
- 43:15Speaker 2: can walk through it. Through the telly.
- 43:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:16Speaker 1: What song do you want to listen to? Wondering Why. Yeah,
- 43:19Speaker 1: this is it right here. Can you just take... I
- 43:20Speaker 1: just want to know who comes in when, right? Because
- 43:23Speaker 1: it starts off just with you singing. Mm-hmm.
- 43:25Speaker 2: Yeah. You probably won't hear it, but I'm in the...
- 43:28Speaker 2: Right at the second verse.
- 43:29Speaker 1: Okay. Or the first verse.
- 43:31Speaker 2: But I just play bass. It's not that big of
- 43:32Speaker 2: a deal, you know?
- 43:33Speaker 1: But you come in.
- 43:36Speaker 1: Boom. Yeah.
- 43:37Speaker 2: That's it. Well, I go to the chorus. You'll hear it.
- 43:39Speaker 3: This is Matthew recording this. That's me doing the... So
- 43:44Speaker 3: that's you on the guitar.
- 43:46Speaker 4: The old boat paddle.
- 43:48Speaker 1: And here comes my big moment.
- 43:49Speaker 4: Right here. One earlier cut used to have finger snaps
- 43:53Speaker 4: right here.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:54Speaker 2: Ooh, I like that.
- 44:12Speaker 1: But who was hitting that cymbal right there?
- 44:14Speaker 2: That's John.
- 44:14Speaker 1: Okay, that's John.
- 44:17Speaker 2: And that's Drew.
- 44:18Speaker 1: And there's Drew.
- 44:19Speaker 2: And then it's everybody?
- 44:22Speaker 3: Yep.
- 44:23Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 44:25Speaker 3: And that's Zach in there laying in those backup parts.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Or just riding, like fretting that.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Does he play a slide on that? No.
- 44:33Speaker 1: Is that called fretting? He does this right here.
- 44:35Speaker 2: When you're courting or making chords. That was Zach.
- 44:40Speaker 1: Got it. Yeah, I was just listening the other day
- 44:42Speaker 1: and I was wondering, I was like, who's coming in when?
- 44:44Speaker 1: Just so I know who's doing what. Yeah, what's the
- 44:49Speaker 1: collaborating like for an album? Like, do you guys seem to, like,
- 44:53Speaker 1: does it get tough? How is it, like, battling egos
- 44:55Speaker 1: and stuff? I guess at this point, if you spend
- 44:57Speaker 1: that much time in a, like, in that close of quarters,
- 45:03Speaker 1: you guys have got it figured out?
- 45:06Speaker 2: Oh, we're brothers, man.
- 45:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 45:08Speaker 3: We used to, we would work up songs and In
- 45:13Speaker 3: the earlier days, we would get aggravated if we didn't
- 45:17Speaker 3: want to take the song in our direction or my
- 45:20Speaker 3: direction or Zach's direction or whatever. But somewhere along the line,
- 45:25Speaker 3: I think we just got to a point where we
- 45:28Speaker 3: realized at the end of the day, we all want
- 45:29Speaker 3: the same thing, is to make good music.
- 45:31Speaker 2: And so we try everything.
- 45:35Speaker 3: And there's always a way to make everybody happy as
- 45:39Speaker 3: far as making music like that. And we'll try everything,
- 45:42Speaker 3: even if we have to play the song for eight
- 45:44Speaker 3: or nine hours while we're working it up. Just play
- 45:47Speaker 3: it over and over again, all these different ways, until
- 45:49Speaker 3: we find the right way. And there's not really any
- 45:53Speaker 3: egos involved with that, you know.
- 45:55Speaker 2: Damn. I don't think a lot of bands are like that.
- 45:58Speaker 2: At least, I wouldn't think so. So, I feel very
- 46:01Speaker 2: fortunate to.
- 46:02Speaker 1: Have that relationship. Yeah, I know when I met you guys,
- 46:04Speaker 1: when I met you guys, we were in Virginia?
- 46:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:06Speaker 1: Oh, shoot.
- 46:07Speaker 2: Charlottesville, maybe? You were playing.
- 46:09Speaker 3: That's where you brought us out to your show out there.
- 46:11Speaker 2: Yeah, you were. Where the heck were we?
- 46:13Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 46:14Speaker 2: I can't remember.
- 46:14Speaker 4: Shoot.
- 46:15Speaker 1: I feel like it was Charlottesville.
- 46:16Speaker 2: I think it was Charlottesville. It was Charlottesville.
- 46:19Speaker 1: But we came at the end and saw a couple.
- 46:20Speaker 1: You got to see a couple of the songs.
- 46:21Speaker 2: You wore that goofy Jeff Gordon jacket.
- 46:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 46:24Speaker 3: I didn't believe you were going to show up.
- 46:26Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 46:26Speaker 3: Theo's probably going to come out. And I was like,
- 46:28Speaker 3: Theo's going to be way too busy to be. Worried
- 46:30Speaker 3: about us.
- 46:30Speaker 1: Dude, I had so much fun.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Yeah, look, there we are.
- 46:33Speaker 1: But y'all's band, everybody, there was just, there was an
- 46:36Speaker 1: energy in there. You guys, we all sat in there
- 46:38Speaker 1: and just chatted for a little while. But a lot
- 46:40Speaker 1: of groups, it's not like that. You'll meet a group
- 46:42Speaker 1: of a band sometimes and it's not the same energy,
- 46:45Speaker 1: you know?
- 46:46Speaker 2: Dude, we live, we make each other laugh day in
- 46:49Speaker 2: and day out. You put five of us, the five
- 46:51Speaker 2: of us with each other, we're gonna just, we can't
- 46:54Speaker 2: help but just crack up laughing.
- 46:57Speaker 1: Um, Yeah, because our theme song on the podcast was
- 47:00Speaker 1: made by a group called Bishop Gun. Did you guys
- 47:02Speaker 1: ever hear of them?
- 47:02Speaker 2: Yeah, they're from South, they're not together anymore, but they
- 47:05Speaker 2: were from South Mississippi.
- 47:06Speaker 1: Yeah, and they really had a great start, you know,
- 47:09Speaker 1: like they got to open up for the Stones.
- 47:10Speaker 3: That's us watching you.
- 47:12Speaker 1: Oh, gang, dude, that's awesome.
- 47:14Speaker 2: They had us at their side stage.
- 47:17Speaker 4: Oh, wow.
- 47:17Speaker 2: We were there for like five minutes and we were
- 47:20Speaker 2: like watching the clock. We had to leave right at
- 47:22Speaker 2: a certain time to get back to start our own show.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Oh, thanks, man.
- 47:24Speaker 2: We didn't want to leave, man.
- 47:26Speaker 1: No, it got bad.
- 47:29Speaker 2: Did it we left at a good time now we
- 47:32Speaker 2: we it's funny because we don't really listen to much
- 47:34Speaker 2: music as a as a group like when we come
- 47:36Speaker 2: on the bus after a show it's it's comedy oh
- 47:38Speaker 2: yeah yeah it's it's kill tony's or somebody's stand-up special.
- 47:42Speaker 1: Hey kill tony's so great man we actually.
- 47:44Speaker 2: Saw a couple i guess it was a couple weeks
- 47:47Speaker 2: ago um we went and saw shane shane gillis invite
- 47:52Speaker 2: us out he put us up in the suite and
- 47:54Speaker 2: everything and then We got to meet freaking Tony and
- 47:57Speaker 2: Jeff Ross.
- 47:58Speaker 3: Tony was just standing outside smoking a cigarette, and we
- 48:00Speaker 3: walked up on him.
- 48:01Speaker 2: That dude's as goofy as you think he is.
- 48:04Speaker 3: Oh, hey, guys.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Had his big old Texas belt buckle on.
- 48:09Speaker 1: You ain't from here. Tony is one of a kind, bro.
- 48:14Speaker 1: His show, they have like 100,000 people watching it at
- 48:18Speaker 1: once when it comes on. That's unprecedented in the world,
- 48:22Speaker 1: I feel like.
- 48:22Speaker 2: I can't remember how we even discovered it, but we
- 48:27Speaker 2: watch it all the time on the bus. It's just
- 48:29Speaker 2: about every night after a show.
- 48:31Speaker 1: It's so great.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Kill Tony's coming on. It's incredible. I think we're going
- 48:35Speaker 2: to a Kill Tony in a couple, probably I think
- 48:39Speaker 2: next month.
- 48:40Speaker 1: Are you guys going to head down to Austin?
- 48:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Tony invited us out to kill Tony
- 48:45Speaker 2: with him. Really?
- 48:45Speaker 1: I'll be there.
- 48:46Speaker 2: Well, then we're going to hang out with you. It's
- 48:48Speaker 2: going to be a party then. I think it's at
- 48:49Speaker 2: Rogan's place, if I'm not mistaken. I don't know where
- 48:51Speaker 2: they shoot it.
- 48:51Speaker 1: I'm going to go down there for a couple weeks
- 48:53Speaker 1: and work on some material.
- 48:54Speaker 2: Are you going to be on the panel that night,
- 48:55Speaker 2: you think?
- 48:56Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 48:56Speaker 3: They asked if we wanted to go on stage, and
- 48:58Speaker 3: I was like, no.
- 48:58Speaker 2: Hell no. No, I want to go watch. I don't
- 49:01Speaker 2: want to get on stage. You ain't going to hurt
- 49:03Speaker 2: my feelings today. Those poor guys. I've been doing comedy
- 49:07Speaker 2: for 13 years, and they just get roasted to hell.
- 49:09Speaker 2: It's like, dang.
- 49:10Speaker 1: Yeah, the balls that that takes, because it's so hard
- 49:13Speaker 1: to make people laugh in a minute. It would almost
- 49:15Speaker 1: be like, hey, guys, in one minute, make me believe
- 49:19Speaker 1: that you are.
- 49:20Speaker 2: Are a good band yeah you can't do that it'd
- 49:24Speaker 2: be really hard yeah yeah you know i mean you
- 49:26Speaker 2: could do a couple riffs or whatever but i feel
- 49:27Speaker 2: like it'd be really tough um that in comedy is
- 49:31Speaker 2: just something i don't understand how to make yeah i
- 49:34Speaker 2: like sitting there watching it and wondering where a joke's
- 49:38Speaker 2: going to go, and then the punchline comes in and
- 49:39Speaker 2: just makes you roll while you're laughing. I can't do that.
- 49:43Speaker 2: So I wouldn't want to go on Kill Tony just
- 49:47Speaker 2: for that reason. I'd be up there just playing a band.
- 49:51Speaker 2: I told Brandon, if he ever goes on, you just
- 49:54Speaker 2: got to go up there and sing for a minute.
- 49:56Speaker 2: That's what you got to do, bro. You just lean
- 49:59Speaker 2: hard into it.
- 50:00Speaker 1: Yeah, lean into what you do best, brother. If they
- 50:02Speaker 1: invite you to bring potatoes, bring potatoes, dude.
- 50:05Speaker 2: It's just that being a comedian seems, man, it's like
- 50:08Speaker 2: we have music to hide behind, and we have the
- 50:10Speaker 2: five of us up, or six of us up there
- 50:12Speaker 2: to hide behind, and we have each other. Especially watching
- 50:16Speaker 2: you and Shane, it's like you're up there by yourself, man.
- 50:18Speaker 2: You're out in the abyss. That's what's so fascinating about it.
- 50:20Speaker 2: You're floating around hoping people... People laugh or, you know,
- 50:24Speaker 2: get what they paid for.
- 50:25Speaker 1: We couldn't do it with, I think the hardest thing
- 50:28Speaker 1: I think to do is that improv where people are
- 50:29Speaker 1: working with other people, you know? That's the thing to
- 50:32Speaker 1: me that seems like it's really the toughest. I, that's
- 50:36Speaker 1: where I, like, I've tried to take improv classes and
- 50:38Speaker 1: stuff and I was not good at it in Los Angeles.
- 50:41Speaker 2: You weren't good at improv.
- 50:42Speaker 1: It was so hard, man. It was like, because it's just,
- 50:45Speaker 1: you're so used, as a comedian, you're so used to just, yeah,
- 50:49Speaker 1: I was just so used to like controlling things myself.
- 50:52Speaker 1: You know, that I would just– I don't know. It
- 50:55Speaker 1: was hard to do it with somebody else. I guess
- 50:59Speaker 1: to trust that somebody else, it was going to work well,
- 51:01Speaker 1: you know.
- 51:03Speaker 2: It's kind of that– Probably chemistry too, though. Yeah, there's
- 51:06Speaker 2: a surreal moment for even us. It's like it's hard
- 51:08Speaker 2: to believe that people are coming to see you do
- 51:10Speaker 2: what you do.
- 51:11Speaker 1: Oh, it's crazy.
- 51:11Speaker 2: And it doesn't feel right.
- 51:13Speaker 1: One time I was stuck in traffic. We were coming
- 51:14Speaker 1: back from the YMCA from working out for a show.
- 51:16Speaker 1: And I was like, man, what the fuck, dude? This
- 51:19Speaker 1: fucking town– And it was traffic from my show, dude.
- 51:24Speaker 1: And the driver goes, dude, these people are going to
- 51:27Speaker 1: see you. I was like, oh, shit, man.
- 51:30Speaker 2: You're complaining about the traffic. These people are awesome. That's
- 51:34Speaker 2: one of our goals when you've made is when you
- 51:35Speaker 2: can shut down the damn freeway outside of the arena.
- 51:39Speaker 2: That's when you've made it. That's how we felt pulling
- 51:41Speaker 2: up to your show with all that traffic. Dude, it
- 51:42Speaker 2: was like, are we even going to have time to
- 51:44Speaker 2: get in? We're like sitting in traffic. We get out
- 51:46Speaker 2: and just start walking. The Uber is just like, we'll
- 51:48Speaker 2: just get out here. We just started walking down the sidewalk.
- 51:50Speaker 1: Literally the red clay strays, dude. You guys are just
- 51:53Speaker 1: wandering around.
- 51:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:56Speaker 3: I think we're in a cool spot right now to
- 51:57Speaker 3: where it's like we definitely get noticed a lot now,
- 52:00Speaker 3: but it's still hit or miss in some places.
- 52:02Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Especially if I wear a hat. It's like
- 52:05Speaker 2: an imposter syndrome for us, too. It doesn't make sense
- 52:09Speaker 2: to us why people like what we don't feel. I mean,
- 52:12Speaker 2: we feel what we do is half-assed mediocre, you know?
- 52:16Speaker 2: It's just like, you could go spend your time and
- 52:18Speaker 2: money on a lot better things.
- 52:20Speaker 1: Well, people, but even talking to me about the number
- 52:23Speaker 1: of shows you guys did last year, I mean, that,
- 52:25Speaker 1: you know, the only person I've heard talk that's done
- 52:27Speaker 1: that many shows was Lainey Wilson last year did a
- 52:30Speaker 1: lot of shows.
- 52:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:32Speaker 1: I mean, she was, you know, I saw her at
- 52:34Speaker 1: the end of the year and I was like, man,
- 52:36Speaker 1: she is gone. She's, it just hasn't ended, you know.
- 52:39Speaker 2: You have to, I think that's where you, you know,
- 52:41Speaker 2: I think that's where the boys and the men are separated.
- 52:44Speaker 2: It's not about being the best. It's not about It's
- 52:47Speaker 2: about literally just going and doing it. If you can
- 52:49Speaker 2: stick through it.
- 52:51Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh yeah. Resiliency for sure. And then I think like,
- 52:54Speaker 1: even with Bishop Gunn, they had like addiction, they had
- 52:57Speaker 1: like some addiction issues in the bank, like that kind
- 53:00Speaker 1: of stuff tore them, you know?
- 53:01Speaker 4: Oh yeah.
- 53:02Speaker 2: I mean, we've seen that not with ourselves, but it's
- 53:04Speaker 2: so easy being on the road. How you can, I mean,
- 53:06Speaker 2: you probably see it with comedy, how you can easily
- 53:08Speaker 2: turn to those things.
- 53:09Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 53:10Speaker 2: It's a dark hole. You don't want to go down.
- 53:12Speaker 2: It's like the seventies no more.
- 53:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 53:13Speaker 3: It's not the seventies anymore. And, The whole sex, drugs,
- 53:16Speaker 3: and rock and roll thing is kind of a, you know,
- 53:21Speaker 3: what's the word I'm looking for?
- 53:25Speaker 2: Like a thing of the past? It's like a stereotype.
- 53:27Speaker 3: Everybody from the outside looking in, they think that's what
- 53:30Speaker 3: it's like, and it's not really like that anymore.
- 53:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:32Speaker 3: And we've always made it clear, like, you know, everybody
- 53:36Speaker 3: has their struggles in whatever you're going to do, but
- 53:39Speaker 3: don't let it get in the way of, this you
- 53:43Speaker 3: know what i mean if you're struggling with alcohol what
- 53:45Speaker 3: not to say that any of us do but just
- 53:48Speaker 3: in the sense of if you are struggling with something
- 53:50Speaker 3: stay sober for an hour and a half a night
- 53:52Speaker 3: to play the show yeah and then these people pay
- 53:55Speaker 3: money and they take their time out of their day
- 53:56Speaker 3: or their schedule to come see you and you're going
- 53:59Speaker 3: to get on stage too messed up to perform that's
- 54:01Speaker 3: that's not cool with me or not cool with any
- 54:03Speaker 3: of us. So that's always been a strict rule with us,
- 54:06Speaker 3: I think. Like we were talking earlier, us five are
- 54:08Speaker 3: so close to each other. We're like brothers. When somebody slips,
- 54:11Speaker 3: Pat corrects.
- 54:13Speaker 1: Really?
- 54:14Speaker 2: Oh yeah, we've all gotten our ass chewed after a
- 54:16Speaker 2: show or two.
- 54:17Speaker 1: That's pretty fortunate then that you guys are able to
- 54:19Speaker 1: have that symbiosis or whatever within your group, you know.
- 54:23Speaker 2: We want the best for each other and we all
- 54:24Speaker 2: love each other very much. We all recognize that we're
- 54:27Speaker 2: doing something bigger than ourselves. If you're worrying about yourself
- 54:31Speaker 2: and what you're what you want to do or how
- 54:33Speaker 2: you've been done wrong, then you're going to find all
- 54:36Speaker 2: kinds of excuses to get mad or to quit or
- 54:39Speaker 2: to argue or fight with somebody. But if you keep
- 54:42Speaker 2: it selfless instead of selfish, that's where you can find
- 54:46Speaker 2: fulfillment and the strength to keep going, I guess.
- 54:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 54:52Speaker 2: And I think a part of that was our come
- 54:54Speaker 2: up meeting some of our heroes and realizing these guys
- 54:57Speaker 2: are not cool. And that's how we don't want to
- 55:00Speaker 2: ever treat other people or treat our own crew, let
- 55:05Speaker 2: alone each other.
- 55:06Speaker 1: Yeah, just seeing that kind of stuff on different festivals
- 55:09Speaker 1: or different things like that.
- 55:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I mean, we've met some people that you'd
- 55:12Speaker 2: think would be douchebags, and they're cool as hell.
- 55:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:14Speaker 2: And that's always cool. It's like meeting you. You could
- 55:17Speaker 2: have been an asshole to us, you know?
- 55:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 55:19Speaker 2: You kind of were, but that's okay. We're here, you know?
- 55:23Speaker 1: I had to be, I guess. What did I do?
- 55:25Speaker 1: Something bad? No, that's fine. Oh.
- 55:27Speaker 2: You wore that Jeff Gordon jacket. That was problem one.
- 55:30Speaker 1: That'll turn some people off, man.
- 55:31Speaker 2: I made you take it off.
- 55:32Speaker 1: I gotta pee really fast, guys.
- 55:34Speaker 2: You gotta do that.
- 55:34Speaker 1: You gotta pee, anybody else?
- 55:35Speaker 2: I gotta pee. I gotta pee.
- 55:37Speaker 1: You remember the first song you ever heard?
- 55:39Speaker 3: I remember the first song. Sorry, I'm a little out
- 55:45Speaker 3: of breath going up those stairs. The first song I
- 55:49Speaker 3: remember singing was a song by Tracy Bird called We're
- 55:53Speaker 3: From the Country and We Like It That Way.
- 55:55Speaker 1: Yep.
- 55:56Speaker 2: Everybody knows everybody.
- 55:59Speaker 1: Everybody calls you friend. Yeah, that was a good song, huh?
- 56:03Speaker 4: Don't need an invitation. Kick off your shoes and come
- 56:07Speaker 4: on in.
- 56:08Speaker 1: Yeah. Know how to.
- 56:10Speaker 4: Work and we know how to play. We're from the
- 56:13Speaker 4: country and we like it that way.
- 56:16Speaker 2: How old were you when you sang? I had to
- 56:18Speaker 2: be probably four or five years old.
- 56:20Speaker 1: And were you singing to the family? Were you performing
- 56:22Speaker 1: for someone or were you just sitting somewhere just singing that?
- 56:25Speaker 3: I've always, my mama told me, even before I could talk,
- 56:30Speaker 3: I'd walk around just going, nee, nah, nee, nah.
- 56:33Speaker 2: Already on them vocal warm-ups.
- 56:35Speaker 1: Okay, so.
- 56:36Speaker 3: But I've always, yeah, just always been a songbird, I guess.
- 56:40Speaker 3: I remember having the little radio off of Toy Story,
- 56:43Speaker 3: the microphone.
- 56:45Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 56:45Speaker 3: And I was just dragging the radio around. And it
- 56:48Speaker 3: took a cassette tape. And so I'd have the Tracy
- 56:51Speaker 3: Bird cassette tape in there and just.
- 56:53Speaker 2: Oh, dude. Gosh, that just brought back some memories.
- 56:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:58Speaker 2: Yeah, the one I had.
- 56:59Speaker 1: That looks like Sketch who was just on here. Oh,
- 57:03Speaker 1: my God.
- 57:03Speaker 2: Maybe that's what he based it off of. What's up, brother?
- 57:06Speaker 1: That's unbelievable. Yeah, what's up?
- 57:10Speaker 2: You got to send him one.
- 57:11Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, we've got to send him one. Will you
- 57:13Speaker 1: write that down, Ben? Okay. Yeah. What was that sound
- 57:18Speaker 1: you made again?
- 57:19Speaker 2: Ne-na, ne-na.
- 57:23Speaker 1: It reminds me of Squid Game's kind of.
- 57:27Speaker 2: I did not like that show.
- 57:28Speaker 1: You didn't?
- 57:29Speaker 2: No, it freaked me out a little bit. Yeah, it's
- 57:31Speaker 2: a little freaky.
- 57:32Speaker 1: A lot of, yeah. Look, yeah, I've got some Japanese friends,
- 57:37Speaker 1: and they're prone to violence at times, you know?
- 57:40Speaker 4: Really?
- 57:40Speaker 2: I can see that.
- 57:41Speaker 1: Oh, they like to, yeah. They're really, because they keep
- 57:44Speaker 1: a lot of their feelings in. And so the only, they.
- 57:46Speaker 2: Well, that's like the way of the ninja, though, right?
- 57:49Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, I guess so. They just busted a dude
- 57:51Speaker 1: with a samurai sword out there grilling meat. Where was
- 57:54Speaker 1: that at?
- 57:54Speaker 2: Sounds like Florida. Samurai sword and grilling meat.
- 58:00Speaker 1: Yeah, this man. Man grilling in shopping cart. Used sword
- 58:02Speaker 1: as skewer. Arrested near Santa Monica.
- 58:04Speaker 2: Well, he didn't try to stab nobody.
- 58:06Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. This guy is... Video from the
- 58:09Speaker 1: Citizen app captured the wild scene before 3 p.m. on Sunday.
- 58:13Speaker 1: The man is seen dragging a shopping cart through a
- 58:15Speaker 1: bike lane. That looks like California. The... The main compartment
- 58:21Speaker 1: of the car is filled with flaming wood while the
- 58:23Speaker 1: man uses a sword as a skewer to hold meat
- 58:25Speaker 1: over the flames. Here's the thing. You can't– if you
- 58:27Speaker 1: have so many people who are without homes, right, they're
- 58:31Speaker 1: going to start to open up barbacoas or whatever this
- 58:36Speaker 1: is called. They're going to start to open up haircutting.
- 58:39Speaker 1: I get my haircut when I'm in LA by a
- 58:41Speaker 1: guy who is a street man.
- 58:45Speaker 2: A street man. But he likes to live in. cutting
- 58:47Speaker 2: hair he.
- 58:48Speaker 1: Makes a living cutting hair this dude dreamer he's native
- 58:50Speaker 1: american actually.
- 58:51Speaker 2: That's a that right there that's a food truck well
- 58:53Speaker 2: food cart but same concept.
- 58:55Speaker 1: It's the same concept and yeah sure maybe it's fda
- 58:58Speaker 1: approved maybe it's not um it people it's still society
- 59:03Speaker 1: they're still going to start a civilization. You know what
- 59:05Speaker 1: I'm saying? Like everybody's going to start a civilization.
- 59:08Speaker 3: And if they don't have money to pay permits for
- 59:12Speaker 3: food trucks or whatever else, they're just going to.
- 59:14Speaker 2: That machete is that man's permit.
- 59:16Speaker 3: Yeah, they're going to resort to whatever they can.
- 59:17Speaker 1: They're going to figure out. And I think we got
- 59:19Speaker 1: to put more swords on the streets.
- 59:20Speaker 2: I bet that's some of the best barbecue you probably
- 59:22Speaker 2: ever had too. Oh, samurai sword.
- 59:26Speaker 1: Yeah, samurai. Oh. Yeah, Willie's Samurai Barbecue or whatever.
- 59:29Speaker 2: What do you think that meat is? He probably did
- 59:31Speaker 2: not buy that at the grocery store.
- 59:33Speaker 1: Damn, dude, I think that's damn probably.
- 59:34Speaker 2: He's got some of them Cali raccoons. I don't know
- 59:36Speaker 2: what they got out there.
- 59:38Speaker 1: Oh, I think that's probably braised human, bro.
- 59:40Speaker 2: Oh, shit.
- 59:41Speaker 1: Who knows?
- 59:43Speaker 3: You don't know when you're getting it out of a
- 59:44Speaker 3: shopping cart.
- 59:45Speaker 1: No. Dude, it's, look, obviously, and here's the thing, a
- 59:47Speaker 1: shopping cart will make you think that it is.
- 59:50Speaker 2: Grocery store quality.
- 59:51Speaker 4: Yep.
- 59:52Speaker 1: So really, the guy's got a great concept.
- 59:54Speaker 2: Really, it's a grocery store manager quality.
- 59:56Speaker 1: Where does some of you guys' influence come with music?
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: What are you guys listening to right now?
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: What am I listening to right now? I've been listening
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: to Lake Street Dive a lot lately. We just saw
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: them at Mooncrush.
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: Really?
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: They're incredible. Lake Street Dive, you never heard of them?
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: Uh-uh.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: Oh, they're incredible.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: Put me on, put me on.
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: Always been a huge fan of them, and then seeing
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: them live just kind of reignited that. So I've just
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: been on a Lake Street Dive kick. for the last
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: few days. Her vocals are just insane.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: I love that organ player, man, when he sings. I mean,
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: they're like, it's like the 70s, modern day 70s music
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: right there. It is incredible, especially live.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: Really, really good.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: Lake Street Dive.
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: I got obsessed with trying to do vibrato because I
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: can't do it. I couldn't do it at all, but
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: now I can kind of do it. But she was
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: one of the ones that I would listen to trying to.
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: Figure that out, how to do that with your voice.
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: Still can't do it that well, but try my best.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: So a singer will learn different tricks from other singers,
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: kind of? Or not tricks, or just manipulations or ways
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: to perform, kind of?
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: I just learn by listening. If I listen to Lake
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: Street Dive or listen to Waylon or whatever I'm listening
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: to long enough, I'll start to kind of mimic that
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: on stage a little bit. So how I sing... at
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: whatever show I'm at depends on what I've been listening
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: to for the past few days, I guess.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I think there's something about that, about being an entertainer.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: Part of you wants to, especially if you're staying open
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: to things, you're going to be kind of a sponge
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: in a way. You may, yeah, if you've been absorbing
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: one thing, then the next time you perform, there could
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: be some, some of that in just in your energy,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: you know? You want to be kind of a conduit
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: for good energy, you know? And a lot of creativity
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: and music, art is good energy usually.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: Do you see that in comedy at all?
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: Yep, I see it a lot.
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: If you watch too many or too much of one guy,
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: you kind of start taking that personality on?
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: Oh, I'll watch some Chris Rock and I'll go out
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: there and be like, here's a head.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: This guy loves some Chris Rock.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: So yeah, that'll happen. Oh, every comedian, when they started out, like,
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: At my time, everybody sounded just like Mitch Hedberg. All
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: the people that were booking clubs, all the bookers were like, yeah,
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: everybody right now sounds like Mitch Hedberg. It's just because
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: he's so popular right now. I think there's a lot
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: of that that happens.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: That's the guy who yells, right?
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: He would be like, no, that was.
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: Who am I thinking of?
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: Oh, you're thinking of.
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: He died a long time ago.
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: Yep, you're thinking of Sam. I like this game. No,
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: it's fun. Sam?
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: Don't ruin it, man.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: Kennison.
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: Yeah, Kennison.
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: That's it.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: Sam Kennison.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: That guy was hilarious, too.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: Well, he had a crazy story with this guy, Carl LeBove.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: Can you bring this up? So Carl LeBove, RIP to him, too.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: He passed away. Really funny, sweet guy. I never knew
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: Sam or met him. But one of them had a daughter.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: Can you bring it up? Let me see. The late
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: comedian Sam Kennison left his friend and fellow comedian quite
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: a belated surprise. Carl LeBeau says that Sam was the
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: real father of the daughter he thought was his.
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: Oh.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: We heard about it on the Joy Behar show where
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: LeBeau said he found out that Sam was the father
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: after Sam died. So, yeah, Carl had raised her her
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: whole life and then found out that Sam was the father.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: I was devastated.
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: This is with his wife? Yeah.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: So I think there was a rumor that the child
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: was conceived while he was on stage one time. Wow. Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: That is some disrespect. Yeah.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: I mean, there's craft services and then there's craft services.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: I was devastated. Carl said, we're talking about at the
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: same time of 14 year friendship, we started out together.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: So we had survived living on the streets. You know
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: what it's like to start on comedy. I mean, we
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: stole fruit from the bars at night just to eat
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: and slept in my car and we survived for a
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: very long time. And then with the Rodney Dangerfield special,
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: it changed our lives. And of course, Sam became huge
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: and I was the head writer and his best friend.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: We never lived more than a mile apart. Wow.
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: Then he slept with his wife. Yep, and he was
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: sleeping with his wife.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: That's crazy. Yeah, what does it say happened?
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: You can say best friend and do that.
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: I know.
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: That's what's wild.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: So I called my ex to explain to her that
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: I was having a tough time, and that's when she
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: told me that Sam had fathered my child. Wow. Huh. Yeah.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: That's crazy. Carl LeBeau had not been able to legally
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: establish that Sam Kennison was the child's father in court.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: because all the blood tests proved that she was related
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: to the Kenniston family. Now with the DNA test, he
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: has definitive proof that Sam was the father. Wow, that
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: had to be so wild.
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: I wonder, yeah, I wonder what his thoughts were. It's like,
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: because his best friend died. And so that's normally something
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: you would be mad about, you know, him sleeping with
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: your wife. But at the same time, it's like he
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: left you a little part of himself to raise.
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: It's almost a story out of the Bible almost, it
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: seems like, you know, in a way. Yeah. In a
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: way of like, you know, like, or maybe not out
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: of the Bible, but it's like one of those Aesop's
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: fables or something, something where you like learn like a
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: lesson learning story. Because that'd be crazy. You would hate him.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: You'd be angry at the wife, but then you'd also
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: have something that you cared about for so long.
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: So did he didn't learn that until the death? Right.
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: He didn't learn it until like way after the death.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: Yeah. I think till the, yeah, I think the daughter.
- 1:05:38Speaker 4: Wow.
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: You have to look at that child a little different too.
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: That's not your blood anymore.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: I know, I wonder if that starts to happen inside
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: of you.
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: But you also had that connection like an adopted child.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: Right, and that probably wouldn't disappear, I think.
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: I've seen mixed emotions from different videos. Like some men
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: are like, it doesn't matter, that's my kid, I don't care.
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: And then some men are like, well, that's not my
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: kid anymore.
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: I don't know how I'd feel in that situation.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: Yeah, one guy I saw was playing hit the road
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: jack on his phone after he found out.
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: Really?
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: So he was like pretty excited, yeah.
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: Definitely depends on the man, I guess.
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: I think he was out of here. Yeah.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: Yeah, what else have I been listening to?
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: Yeah, that and comedy.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: Stephen Wilson Jr. I listen to. Eddie Ninevolt, I.
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: Listen to him. Yeah, we got him opening for us
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: at a show. Yeah, we'll do that for him. Eddie Ninevolt.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: Yeah, bro, they're a fivey, man.
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: I'm on the comma.
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: I'm on the comma. We got a band called The
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Moss opening for us on the West Coast. I think
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: they're out of Salt Lake. They're cool. The Moss? It's
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: a little more indie rock, yeah. Not so much indie rock.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: I don't know if you're into that. I mean, you're
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: West Coast, aren't you?
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I would listen to anything. A lot of times
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: I need people to tell me what to listen to.
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: A good one that they're no longer a band anymore. Yeah,
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: The Moss.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: Yeah. J.
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: Roddy Walson and The Business.
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: That's some groovy stuff, too.
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: That's like some good rock and roll music.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: Yeah, all the albums they put out. Did they put
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: out two or three?
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: Oh, I couldn't tell you. You introduced... Them to me. J.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: Roddy Walston in the business, baby.
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: I like that. That's some cool stuff. I don't know
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: if you ever listened to Alabama Shakes. Yeah, I hate
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: that they're not a band anymore. That's one that we
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: looked up to.
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: What happened to them?
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: Well, I think there's some, we read some dark stuff
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: about one of the members in the band, and I
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: think that probably led to the downfall. I don't know
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: how true that was, though. Yeah, we don't know if true,
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: but I think they were a band like we are
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: that started together. A lot of bands nowadays are built
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: around a star or a singer. And I think they
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: were one that started together and ended up breaking up together.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: More of a constellation.
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: Wow.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: Yeah, what happened? In 2018, the band went on hiatus
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: due to Howard's focus on her solo project, Jamie.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: Yeah, she's done a bunch of stuff after that.
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: Which led to a solo tour in 2019. Howard released
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: her second solo album in 2024. in June 2020, guitarist
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: Heath Fogg released his debut solo project under the name Sun.
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not familiar with any of that, but Alabama
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: Shakes was incredible.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: And was that all the members of Alabama Shakes? What's that?
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: Those people right there?
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: Some of them.
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: That's part of the band.
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: So some of them, they obviously just, some of them
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: went their own separate ways. Something must have happened and
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: then went their own separate ways. Yeah, or she wanted
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: to do her solo stuff, which is... That sounds like it. Man,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: that's the scary part, you know? Well, that's what's interesting
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: about the ego. The ego, you don't know how it's
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: going to grow. It grows like a moss, man.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: I could see myself doing solo stuff one day, but
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: I'm not going to quit Red Clay Strays.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Yeah, hers was more of
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: a quit.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: Never came back to it.
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: Like that band Need to Breathe.
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: You know who I'm talking about? That's another one to
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: listen to. Ben knows.
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: Their lead singer does a project called Wilder Woods, and
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: he goes and does Wilder Woods stuff, and he still
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: does Need to Breathe stuff. This is just if I
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: ever get extra time on my hands and just want
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: to start other projects, I could see myself doing it,
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: but definitely wouldn't.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: Need to Breathe.
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: Yeah, they're great. Brandon actually showed me them too. That's,
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: I would say, have a pretty similar, we have a
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: similar sound to them, I would say.
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: I grew up listening to them. That's definitely somebody that
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: I started trying to mimic, like learning how to sing.
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: You've got a very powerful voice. loud voice and that's
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: how I started singing. Everything was very powerful and very loud.
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: And then getting into, I guess, diving deeper into it,
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: starting to learn technique and how to use your voice
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: and stuff. And then I wanted to learn how to
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: sing like opera singers with vibrato and stuff. So it's
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: just depends on who I'm listening to.
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: And would you sing? So after you was rattling around
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: the house, um, mimicking and learning some, you know, and,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: And running your pipes You know like Did you start
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: to sing in church Or what was that like Like
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: where'd you're singing Kind of Yeah I started singing How'd
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: you start to sing Yeah where'd you start singing at Oh.
- 1:09:58Speaker 3: Yeah that was the first Place I ever sang in
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: front of a crowd Was at church Yeah Yeah I
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: started playing drums in church when I was like 12.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: That's a dangerous move usually. Did they put you in
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: that little shed or whatever behind that thing?
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: No, I hate those things. I do too.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: Usually the church always puts that guy back there behind
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: that little aquarium.
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: It depends on the church you go to. The ones
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: that Brandon was in, they're in there jooking. It's not contemporary.
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: All the churches are moving that way where they want
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: to shield everything and have all of the actual sounds
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: of the instruments coming through the PA system and it's like,
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: I want to feel the sound waves, man. I want
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: to go out Just let the drummer play. Let the
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: guitar player play.
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: Oh, I want to get hit by a damn drumstick
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: in there.
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: That's how you get into it.
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: I actually had to go to, it was Brandon was
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: playing in the church, and John, our drummer, John was
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: playing drums in the church. This was probably four or
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: five years ago, and I grew up in a Catholic church,
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: and you walk in with a tie on and the
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: organs playing and congregations singing. I come in there, and
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: they are in there throwing down.
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: At his church?
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: I thought it was a WWE match.
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: I had to bring John's snare drum. He asked me
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: to bring his drum, and I'm like in shorts. I
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: didn't know what I was coming to. It's a wild,
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: different environment, but you feel the Holy Spirit moving in
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: a bunch of different ways.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: So there's a lot of energy in there.
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: That's why I've always liked Pentecostal.
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: Pentecostal?
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: I'm more non-denominational because I don't really– the Baptists, the Pentecostal,
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: the Catholicists, this is all preference based in my opinion.
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: But I do like a Pentecostal church because– I zone
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: out so easily and I'll lose attention. And if I
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: got somebody up there screaming at me and, you know,
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: stomping his feet and getting into it like a performance
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: pretty much, it keeps my attention.
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: I love that.
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: And my pastor, he was like 72 at the time.
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: He'd be running across the pews, running over the top
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: of them and just feeling it, man.
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: It's just something that keeps your attention the whole time.
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Do you think that's had an effect on how
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: you perform kind of?
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I'd say so. The church he's talking about is
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: where I was going as an adult. The church I
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: grew up in was more of a, still a Pentecostal church,
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: but it was more of a smaller building and a
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: lot of older people were there. Just an old country,
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: southern country church, I guess. It wasn't a lot of
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: energy until I started playing drums there.
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: Brandon brought the Holy Spirit back in there.
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: Did that change the vibe in there a little?
- 1:12:23Speaker 3: Yeah, it was literally just, at the time, it was
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: literally just the pastor with no amp or anything, just
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: playing his acoustics, singing hymnals. And then I started playing drums,
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: and then they had a keyboard player. I guess I
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: started doing that around when I was like 12 and
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: played in there all the way up through high school
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: before I started going on the road and being gone
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: all the time.
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: Yeah, man, that church, especially if you've got a church
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: that's got a feeling in it. That's why I remember
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: the first time I went to black churches, man, them
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: things was different.
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: I've been looking for a good black church. Yeah. I mean,
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: I see a lot of similarity in like the church
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: like Brandon's talking about. They're in there getting down. The
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: preacher's up there, you know, really preaching and throwing energy
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: into it. Yeah. The music's bumping and jiving.
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: Yeah. That's what they do.
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: Yeah. I love that. Because there's definitely something. I mean,
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: even if you look at like Tony Robbins, he jumps
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: on his like trampoline before he goes on stage. Like
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: there's something.
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: Get that adrenaline going.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: Yeah. To get just his like. I think he says
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: it's to get like the lymph in his body, like
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: basically just to get the, it's like shaking the snow globe, baby.
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Yeah.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: You want some weather, you just want nothing, you know?
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: So you got to start your own weather a lot
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: of times, you know?
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: Hop on that trampoline.
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: And a lot of times the Holy Spirit or whatever,
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: that feeling you get, I feel that a lot on stage.
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: And that's what I project a lot of times, singing.
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: And just to see that in a pastor, you know,
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: feeling that passion and So make him raise his voice
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: or to make him stomp his foot.
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: You know, he's up there in the moment. He's feeling it.
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: And that just keeps you drawn in the whole time.
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, man. I need to find some good churches
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: that have stuff like that. That's the South, I think,
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: just in general with churches. I would love to one
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: day maybe end up in a road like that. There's
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: some moments on stage where I feel a little bit
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: like a pastor.
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: Is that?
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: Weird to say that.
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: Well, I mean, you're up there with a microphone. I
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: wouldn't say so.
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: I don't feel like in the sense that I'm like some...
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: Like a spiritual leader.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: Right, no.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: But I do feel that in a sense like, oh,
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: I wonder if there's part of me that has this
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: calling a little bit. That's what it is. It's like
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: a little bit of energy goes through me and like,
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: it's even a moment when I'm talking about God in
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: this one bit and I'm like, I wonder if, why
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: does this bit stand out to me so much? You know,
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: or I wonder if.
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: That could be the Holy Spirit talking to you.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: Yeah, at least whispering.
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: I think God gives you a platform and it's a
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: constant trade off God raises you up and gives you
- 1:15:00Speaker 3: a platform and then you turn around and give it
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: back to God and raise him up and then he
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: raises you up and that's that's just the way I've
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: always looked at it God gives you talents he gives
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: you drives to do things he gives you and then
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: gives you a platform and you can either make it
- 1:15:17Speaker 3: about yourself or turn around and give the glory back
- 1:15:20Speaker 3: to God and It's just that constant trade-off that's always
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: going on.
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: Wow, I never really, yeah, that's a great way to
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: say that, man. Like, yeah, it's like volleying with tennis,
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: kind of. It's like love, love, love, love, you know? Yeah. Huh.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: That's fascinating, man. Do you have a pretty good faith?
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: And is it just you that has a pretty strong faith, Brandon?
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: Does a lot of your band members? Or is it
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: a church-going group?
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: We're definitely not a church-going group, but yeah, we're all
- 1:15:49Speaker 3: pretty faith-based.
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: Yeah, especially the five- Core of it, we all come
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: from different religious backgrounds with it, too. Like I said,
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: I'm Catholic, Drew's Methodist, Brandon grew up Pentecostal. John, I
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: don't know where he came from. Southern Baptist. Southern Baptist, yeah.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: Wow, yeah.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: So we actually, I mean, we've had a lot of
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: late— Through the portal, then.
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:16:09Speaker 3: And it's like none of us are fighting to live
- 1:16:14Speaker 3: like a Baptist.
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: Or to live like a Catholic.
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: We all grew up that way.
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: We have some great conversations, though. The goal is to
- 1:16:20Speaker 3: do what God put you here to do. That goes
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: back to not making it about yourself. It's something bigger
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: that's going on than just yourself. And so I think
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: that's another big reason why we haven't broken up or anything,
- 1:16:34Speaker 3: even when we do disagree or get in fights or whatever.
- 1:16:37Speaker 3: The goal doesn't change. There's still something bigger going on.
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: Yeah. But to get everybody to believe that, that's hard
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: to do, you know? Because some people can believe something.
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: Two out of five people sometimes will be like, yes,
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: this is how I believe, and this is how I'm
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: going to behave based on that belief that there is
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: something bigger than us going on. But to really get
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: all five, that's pretty miraculous.
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: Yeah. And it's not like, I mean, even our whole
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: road crew, we're built of, you got Christians, we got atheists, it's...
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: It's just like we have a common goal, and it
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: could be something different for that other guy, but we
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: know it's something bigger than ourselves.
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:17:20Speaker 3: And I know if somebody doesn't believe, it's not my
- 1:17:22Speaker 3: job to save them. You know what I mean? I'm
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: not out trying to preach to anybody or convert anybody
- 1:17:29Speaker 3: or anything like that. I'm simply just singing songs. And
- 1:17:32Speaker 3: if you like it, if you like the message, and
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: if you like what we do, then listen. I don't
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: care what you believe or anything like that.
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh, I'm not the Lord's EMT. That's what I say.
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: Best thing you can do is pray for them, man.
- 1:17:43Speaker 3: There's power in prayer.
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: I'll follow the ambulance, but I ain't the Lord's EMT.
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: You get right behind and get through traffic. I used
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: to do that when I was younger. I'd tuck behind
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: that thing. Yeah. I would use the Lord to skirt
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: through traffic. Yeah, he's lead blocking for me right through
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: rush hour. Amen, bro. I used to love to try
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: to look in that back window and see what they're
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: doing in there.
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. They should... put on the outside what's going on.
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: Oh, well, I like how they leave the lights on
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: and you can see them in there working on somebody.
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it's almost like... It's kind of eerie.
- 1:18:13Speaker 3: Though, when you see an ambulance with lights but no sirens. Like, oh,
- 1:18:15Speaker 3: that guy's dead in there.
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: More than likely. They're just driving to the hospital.
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: Well, it's almost like, do they say, is it cheaper
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: not to do the sirens? I wonder at that point.
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: It's like, oh, this guy's dead. Or just run up
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: the bill. This guy's dead.
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: Yeah, like, does that siren cost you a little extra?
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: Do they got insurance? You go the whole thing. They're
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: going to take you. You ain't got no insurance. You're
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: sitting in traffic. We'll get you there, buddy, but you're
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: going to save about $ 500.
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: They should have a second level of ambulance for people
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: that don't want to pay the high premiums of regular ambulances.
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: Because how much does it cost for an ambulance to
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: come get you? I already had it, dude. With insurance,
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: the average out-of-pocket cost for an ambulance... ride is $ 450.
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: So that's like an Uber Black from probably.
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: Across town, at least.
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: You could probably get from Lebanon to here. $ 450 Black, maybe?
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: That's true.
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: I don't know. That's a decent ride.
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: You might be able to get to Chattanooga in a
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: regular Uber.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: In a regular Uber, yeah. That's a long ride.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: Yeah, they should have that secondary market. Like, hey, I
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: don't know. I'm hurt. I'm not going to die.
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: Get me over.
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? Maybe a thing of Narcan
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: in the door.
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: I see if Uber could do something for you. Uber Emergency.
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: Uber Emergency.
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: Uber E.
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: Uber E, yeah. Uber E. It's a little more expensive.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: They'll drive like a maniac. You maybe get a little
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: yellow light or something.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Nothing crazy. Just something that's like if somebody
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: who delivers mail in a rural community, they would put
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: that little orange item on.
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: Top of their car. They got the minivan. You ever
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: seen them left-handed drive minivans?
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: Stick you with something.
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: Dude, my mom would deliver newspapers, so she would have
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: that one arm.
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: Boy, it was just a sling.
- 1:19:48Speaker 4: Oh, dog.
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: Was she on a left-hand drive, too?
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: It played for the Mets, dude. Nah, she'd keep that
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: window down. She'd be saying something to me, and I'd
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: have to just leave.
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: Just watch out.
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: Oh, every time, brother. And if you do, you miss
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: the cadence.
- 1:20:00Speaker 3: You hear the wind come off those things.
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: Oh, you miss the cadence, baby. You was full of
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: the news.
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: See, that's a mama you don't talk back to. She
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: probably got a backhand from.
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: She would learn you fast, man. A lot of you
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: guys know we started off with our first advertiser ever
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: was Gray Block Pizza. Get that hitter, baby. And the
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: owner of Gray Block Pizza, my friend Thomas, evolved his
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: business up in Oregon to start Blue Cube Baths. And
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: he sent me one and it's absolutely beautiful. A wonderful
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: cold plunge, the best cold plunge in the market. If
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: you value American made and pinnacle cold exposure, this is
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: your cold plunge. Blue Cube Baths. What I love is

- 1:20:53Speaker 1: I mean, it might just, you might be able to
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: ice skate in there. I haven't put it that low,
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: but you can set it to a place where you
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: feel comfortable. I'll get in around 50 degrees for about
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: 10 or 12 minutes. And that's what really sets me
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: and activates me. I've done it before, podcasts to really
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: put me in, just put me in my body and
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: put me in the moment. You know, the positive side

- 1:21:42Speaker 1: Is pornography causing a problem in your life? That's a
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: good question. It's a real question. It has in mind
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: It has, at certain periods in my life, watching porno
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: and everything and watching porno was making me, it was
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: ruining my life. It was ruining my life, man. It
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: made me feel just so much shame. That's what it did. Well,
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: watching pornography has become commonplace today, and oftentimes men will
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: use porno to numb the pain of loneliness, boredom, anxiety,
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: and depression. That's why I want to introduce you to
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: my friend, Stephen Walt. Steve is the founder of Valor Recovery.
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: He is a dear friend of mine. He is a
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: dear friend of mine. And Valor Recovery is a program
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: to help men overcome porn abuse and sexual compulsivity. That's right.
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: Their coaches are in long-term recovery, and they will be
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: your partner, mentor, and spiritual guide to transcend problematic behaviors.
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: There is zero commitment. If you reach out to them,
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: it's just the first step in trying to figure out
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: if you may need some help, if you can get
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: some help to learn more about valor recovery, please visit
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: them at valor recovery, coaching.com or email them at admin
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: at valor recovery, coaching.com. The links will be on the YouTube.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: And again, there's no commit when you commitment, when you
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: reach out to them, um, But I promise you, only
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: something positive will come from you reaching out and figuring
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: out what type of help, if any, could benefit you.
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: Thank you. Did you guys go to college?
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: He did.
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I graduated in 2018, so I got out at
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: a good time.
- 1:23:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I started playing music right out of high school.
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: Really?
- 1:23:36Speaker 3: Yeah, he was actually in college a while while we
- 1:23:38Speaker 3: played music, and he'd have to make deals with his
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: professors to like come back and take tests and stuff.
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: Cause we'd be out on the road.
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: We, our first tour, I was like a sophomore and
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: I went to the, uh, my advisor and I was like, look,
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: I got, I need two weeks. Like I'm going to
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: do it regardless. Please let me make my work up.
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: Cause I want to go to school.
- 1:23:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: And what college was it at?
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: South Alabama university.
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: USA, USA, red.
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: White, and blue. South in your mouth.
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: That's what they, that's their mascot. Oh yeah. Yeah. Oh,
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: my God.
- 1:24:08Speaker 3: The mascot's a Jaguar.
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: Yeah, but the motto is south in your mouth.
- 1:24:12Speaker 3: Y'all beat that SEC team one time?
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: It was Mississippi State. I was on the sideline for
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: that one.
- 1:24:16Speaker 4: Really?
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: Y'all beat State?
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: Yeah, we celebrated like it was the Super Bowl.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: Oh, God.
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: We came into the house. They missed a field goal
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: to win the game, and we rushed the field like
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: too early. We had to come back. Rushed the field
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: too early. They were still like probably at three quarters
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: to play. They missed a field goal. We out there
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: celebrating on the logo. It ain't even halftime. South of your.
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: Mouth, dude. What is this right here? Oh, British man
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: has the largest penis in the United Kingdom.
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: That's not a lot of people in that country, just
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: to say.
- 1:24:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: In the U.S.
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: Is what?
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: Almost 400 million?
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: This is in the news. What do we got here?
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: It's about as big as Rhode Island. Gosh, British people, man.
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: I'm well endowed implications that it would have when you're
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: actually living the situation.
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: You gotta get that fiber optic.
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: He's talking about the implications of his penis?
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: Classmates?
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: This dude... This dude looks like a creep.
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: Yeah, this guy... First of all, this guy seems like
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: a trap. I bet this guy is not of the
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: biggest wiener. He just is saying that, which is a
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: great thing to say. And then you surprise somebody with
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: a basic wiener. But the man saying you're classmates, how
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: do you know? When you're like, hey, let me borrow
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: a ruler. And you're like, oh, never mind, actually. I
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: got it under control.
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: That's a creepy situation. He looks like a schoolteacher.
- 1:25:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:25:53Speaker 3: Why would you go on the news about that, though, just.
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: To talk about it?
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: That's a great point. It's a lot of ego right there.
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: What's the UK got going on?
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: Let me take this wiener for a walk, you know?
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: I'm going to be on the morning news. How'd they
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: find out? Was he posting about it?
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: He told.
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: Who's he telling?
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: Nobody's emailing the news like, in the park yesterday, you know?
- 1:26:13Speaker 3: Nobody's ever asked him to prove it, though.
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: He's just going off word of mouth.
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that guy should definitely have to show up every
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: year at a certain meetup.
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: Oh, never mind. They brought the ruler out, man. That
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: man is posed with a ruler.
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: Where's he going right there naked?
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: Look at that look on his face in that bottom one.
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: Why he won't get size reduction surgery despite all the downsides.
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: See if you can find out what the downsides are.
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: Just look real quick. Let's see. Because this is something. Because, yeah,
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: a lot of times this is one of those things
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: where you think a lot of things are going to
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: be great and then they're not. The reality of it,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: you know?
- 1:26:50Speaker 3: I'm just surprised this is the news over there.
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: Yeah, what are they doing in the UK? You're going soon,
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: aren't you?
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: Yeah, we're going to go over there. This is it,
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: I guess.
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: You're going to have to bring him to a show, bro.
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: Talk about yourself.
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: I'm going to have to bring this guy on stage.
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: Is it something about Cambridge? Where did he say he was?
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: Yeah, Ben Shepard is his name. Yeah, does it say
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: anything that he says is the problem's? Oh, to get
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: a reduction would cost $ 15, 000.
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess your insurance. So does he need to
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: start a GoFundMe? I don't know if they've got insurance
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: in the UK. I don't know how it works.
- 1:27:20Speaker 3: He could start a GoFundMe.
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: That's true, huh?
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: And just keep the money.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: Oh, that'd be the craziest thing.
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: And then you'd just have the money and the.
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: And the wiener.
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: We had a guy that did a GoFundMe or whatever,
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: and he was supposed to die or whatever, and he
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: didn't die, and people were all pissed.
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: When they saw him. Yeah, I would imagine. That's a letdown.
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: That's a scam.
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: Yeah. People were like, what's up, Ron?
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: Thought you were dead. Thought you were going to die.
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: Where's my 20 bucks, man?
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: Yeah, bro, huh? All right, pay me back.
- 1:27:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: Let's see that cash. I would hate it. It would
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: be cool probably in college, but even then it would be.
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: Listen to us hating on it. I'd hate it. No,
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: it's not even fun. Don't want it.
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: I just wouldn't want to be known for that. It
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: almost go back to being like one of those circus guys,
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: you know? Yeah. Come see Wiener Baby or whatever.
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: Hey, getting paid is getting paid, man.
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: Yeah, come see Mr. Watchwear or whatever they call him.
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: That guy's pretty much the new three-legged gentleman over here.
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: See, that's Franklin Teeny.
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: Come see the Snake Lady. I wanted my $ 1 I
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: paid back after I saw that.
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: I saw Tom Thumb, World's Smallest Horse once. It was enjoyable.
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: Was it a small horse? God, it was so little.
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: I mean, dude, it was this big, brother.
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: You think there's like inbreeding to make them? that size?
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: It looked like it wouldn't go to regular school, I'll
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: say that, when I looked in its eyes. But it
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: was this big, man.
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: You could tell. He rode the short trailer. The short trailer.
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: Did it still stand up on its own?
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: A little bit. Oh, man.
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: We out here making fun of that horse.
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: I thought it was a pig that they glued some
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: hair on.
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: Like a potbelly. That horse... That horse got issues, man.
- 1:29:01Speaker 4: Well.
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: We ain't here bullying that poor horse. Look at him.
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: Look, man, that horse is on the road. It's probably
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: opening up for a.
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: Look at what? Look at it.
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: For a no humped camel. That horse is doing fine.
- 1:29:11Speaker 3: Paying money to see that horse.
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: You got the Budweiser horses.
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: I paid, I think, probably $ 2, $ 2. 80 to see it.
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: Horses can do it. Why can't people do it?
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: That's a good point. That's a great point, huh? Yeah.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: Let people take the show on the road, man. Well,
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: that's the thing. We're getting to a point where it's
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: like little things are going to start to start up
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: and a man's going to be. you know, his own
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: little homeless salt bay or whatever and making meats out
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: of his cart. And you're going to have, yeah, everything should,
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: everything's going to have to be financed. People are having
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: a tough time. Everything becomes for sale.
- 1:29:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: I mean, everybody's like moving into tiny homes and they're
- 1:29:47Speaker 3: going to start starting these little villages, have a little
- 1:29:50Speaker 3: doctor and a dentist and a makeshift trading station.
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: And we have an end of the world plan. And
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: sometimes I just wish it happened. Sounds fun.
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: You guys have a plan? A little bit.
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: I can't talk about it because I can't tell you
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: where we're at, but we all got little jobs already
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: set up. We got land picked out.
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: That's good.
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: Sometimes I just think that'd be kind of fun.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: Well, you'd be a, yeah, at least you would have
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: a skill too. You'd have a band skill.
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: Oh, we're going to be hunting and gathering.
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: There ain't going to be no more time for music.
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: When he's got Native American in him.
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I can track the buffalo. We grow the crops.
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: Be tracking the buffalo, man. We ain't got buffalo in Alabama.
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: You don't know what's going to happen? You got something
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: down there. I don't know, dude. I've been outside of some.
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: Alabama, Buffalo.
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: Do you guys go on tour with the new band now,
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: or it's just your tour now? Is there a point
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: where you don't open for other bands? How does that
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: kind of work?
- 1:30:45Speaker 3: It's just our shows now, and they keep selling out.
- 1:30:48Speaker 3: So we keep having to move to bigger venues because
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: people are getting pissed about it. But we are actually
- 1:30:54Speaker 3: opening up for the Rolling Stones on May the 30th.
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: So that's going to be cool.
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: The Stones album is pretty exciting.
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: Where's that at?
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: It's in Gillette Stadium, Boxborough.
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: That's going to be pretty. That one actually just hit
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: us last week.
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: So things like that are kind of popping up all
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: the time now?
- 1:31:12Speaker 3: Yeah, it's pretty cool because Mick Jagger allegedly has to
- 1:31:15Speaker 3: approve all of the openers. So he approved us. I
- 1:31:18Speaker 3: think we get to take a picture with them too.
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: I'm not sure. What the rules are.
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: We're kind of at a point now where we're, I
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: hate to say too big, but there's a point where
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: you can't open for people, and now we're in this
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: weird state of trying to get people to open for us.
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: It's like a juggling act of figuring that out. What
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: bands that can open for you and what bands are
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: we able to open up for, which really be like
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: the Foo Fighters and Chris Stapleton or something at this point.
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: We only got to really do it a couple times with,
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: Especially with Elle. We did a whole tour with her,
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: like 40 days.
- 1:31:55Speaker 3: She's the only one. She was the first one that
- 1:31:57Speaker 3: took us out like that.
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: Uh-huh.
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: The only one. We've never done it with anybody else.
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: That's awesome. Yeah, I saw her perform during COVID here
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: in Nashville.
- 1:32:08Speaker 4: Really?
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: I haven't been to one of her shows, so I've
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: got to go check her out.
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: Yeah, she's cool.
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: She's good.
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: She puts on a good show. Yeah.
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: People love her. Was there a moment where you guys
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: kind of felt like, dang, we really got a real shot? Like,
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: or we're kind of making it? Like, what does this
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: look like? Was there like one moment where you guys
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: all just maybe walked into a place and sat down
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: and then you like looked at each other and you're like, damn,
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: are we like.
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: Making it? Are we doing it?
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Because it's a weird thing, but it's a
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: real thing that happens.
- 1:32:40Speaker 3: I think we have little moments like that. Like when
- 1:32:42Speaker 3: we first got on the tour bus and got off
- 1:32:44Speaker 3: of our normal bus. Oh, I can imagine that. Getting
- 1:32:47Speaker 3: a driven around in a Prevost. We sold out three
- 1:32:51Speaker 3: days at the Ryman in like four hours. And that
- 1:32:54Speaker 3: was really cool too.
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: And those were in September. Is that the ones coming
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: up in September?
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: That was a moment like, because we knew we had
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: a good feeling we'd sell one. And then it was like, okay,
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: the second one, we got to throw it up right now,
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: like within the hour. And then it's like, we got
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: a third one. We probably could have done five nights.
- 1:33:10Speaker 3: And then the manager was like, hey, pick an opener
- 1:33:12Speaker 3: right now for a third night.
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: We're doing it.
- 1:33:13Speaker 3: Okay, let me see.
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: We got to throw it up in 30 minutes. I'd
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: say that's a moment. And we got some big shows
- 1:33:20Speaker 2: coming up this fall that are going to be kind
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: of one of those moments like, I don't know specifically,
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: but those rooms are getting bigger.
- 1:33:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: Yeah, do you pick openers together like that as a group?
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: Yeah, we pick all our openers.
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: I mainly let Drew and Andrew, y'all do a really
- 1:33:37Speaker 3: good job at picking them.
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: Yeah. We just kind of find music we like and
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: send it to the agents and, hey, what they cost.
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: Can we get them?
- 1:33:45Speaker 3: We have friends, too, like Taylor Honeycutt. She's from Montgomery,
- 1:33:51Speaker 3: and she got started about the same time we did,
- 1:33:53Speaker 3: and she's on the up climb as well. So she's
- 1:33:57Speaker 3: actually on one of our rhyming shows.
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: Taylor Honeycutt?
- 1:34:00Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: This is great, man. It's going to give me a
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: lot of good stuff to listen to.
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: Oh, Belgian man whose body makes its own alcohol cleared
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: of drunk driving. Yeah. I've heard about this before. It's
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: a syndrome?
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: Sounds like alcoholism.
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: Yeah, it does. But it's where your body makes booze.
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: Let me see. A Belgian man has been acquitted of
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: drunk driving because he has auto brewery syndrome, a rare
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: condition whereby the body produces alcohol, his lawyer said.
- 1:34:31Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: People are not born with ABS but can develop it
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: when they already have another intestine-related condition. Patients can present
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: with symptoms consistent with alcohol intoxication such as slurred speech, stumbling.
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: Lawson Motor.
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: So he's like always buzzed. Yeah, that's not similar. He's
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: just always drunk. That's got to be crazy, though, if
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: you just.
- 1:34:52Speaker 3: To not have to drink anything, but you're always buzzed.
- 1:34:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: People are like, damn.
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: How does that happen? Does he have to put like
- 1:34:56Speaker 2: fruit juice in and get some hooch out?
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: I don't know. Like Randy's burping, y'all. It's going to
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: be a. Yeah.
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: Don't let him drink that apple juice. Yeah, pull over, baby.
- 1:35:07Speaker 2: He's peeing liquor at that point.
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: Don't let him drive, man.
- 1:35:11Speaker 2: I have a hard time believing. Yeah. That sounds like
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: some European stuff.
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: Auto brewery syndrome or gut fermentation syndrome is a condition
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: in which ethanol is produced through the endogenous fermentation by
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: fungi or bacteria in the gastrointestinal system, oral cavity or
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: urinary system. Dang, so you can make your own, that
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: body wine, baby.
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: So does that come with the problem of drinking too
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: much alcohol too? I don't know. Are you literally an alcoholic?
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: I guess just by standing around.
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: What happens if it gives blood?
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: Shoot, I don't know. I'll take a pint, though. Yeah, dude.
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: I'll take two pints, dude.
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: Hook that man up.
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: What else? Any other news we got? I did see
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: they had, what was that? Oh, they had that dog that,
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: did you see this? It's like, look it up. It's
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: a dog. Yeah, yeah, this is it.
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: Thurminator?
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: Throw Flame unveils robot dog Therminator with flamethrower attached. The Ohio-based... $ 9, 400.
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: Look at this dog you can own.
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: $ 9, 400?
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: That's the Boston Dynamics dog.
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: Dude, that's like Elon Musk when he put those flamethrowers out,
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: except you can have it hooked to a robot. $ 94.
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: Look it, that's Elon Musk at fire, dude.
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: That's like a nice, that's a decent used car price
- 1:36:33Speaker 2: right there. You could have that 2008 Durango out there.
- 1:36:37Speaker 3: What do you need that for? What's the purpose of
- 1:36:39Speaker 3: that dog with a flamethrower?
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: Burn stuff.
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: Yeah, light a cigarette probably.
- 1:36:44Speaker 2: Burn a trash pile.
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: Dude. Or cook up some damn catfish, dude. I'll tell
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: you this, that thing will grill up a tilapia, homie. Man. Bro,
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: that thing could be a waiter for that homeless guy
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: with that cart.
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: We're going to start seeing some crimes.
- 1:36:56Speaker 3: Like what if this is- That guy who just set
- 1:36:59Speaker 3: himself on fire in New York, if he was going
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: to do that, he could.
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: Have done it with one of those dogs.
- 1:37:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: It would have made the news probably a little bigger.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:37:11Speaker 3: He was trying to start a revolution, apparently.
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: Was he?
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: Yeah. You haven't seen that?
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: I didn't see it. I know that it happened.
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: Yeah, there's some protest.
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: I know a man set himself on fire.
- 1:37:20Speaker 3: If you're going to start a revolution, at least you
- 1:37:21Speaker 3: use a robot dog with a flamethrower.
- 1:37:23Speaker 4: To do it.
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: Are those legal? We're going to stop seeing drive-bys and
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: it's going to be people walking. It's 9,400.
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: Well, I'll tell you this. If you get angry at
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: your neighbor, that thing, you could burn someone's home down. Yeah.
- 1:37:37Speaker 3: Just comes out of the garage and walks across the street.
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: Like, oh, shit.
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: Hey, Jim, check out what I got. Or be petty.
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: Don't even burn the house down. Just burn their bushes down.
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: Oh, that would be the worst, bro. You come out
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: in the morning and your azaleas are gone.
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: Trash their grass.
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: So what do y'all's folks think as your lives change?
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: Has that been interesting or has it been?
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: I mean, it's been so long. It's just normal, I guess. Yeah.
- 1:38:06Speaker 3: I mean, I know it seems like we kind of
- 1:38:08Speaker 3: just come out of nowhere, but we've been doing this
- 1:38:10Speaker 3: for seven or eight years now.
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: So they've been on the bandwagon the whole time?
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, my mom really wanted me to finish college.
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: But you did. Yeah, I did. I was like halfway
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: through sophomore year when I realized I could just do this.
- 1:38:24Speaker 2: And she really wanted me to finish. She wasn't paying
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: for it either.
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: But. Did you get your degree?
- 1:38:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I got it.
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: It's hanging up.
- 1:38:31Speaker 3: I was kind of blessed in the sense of my
- 1:38:33Speaker 3: parents weren't very hands-on as far as that goes. They
- 1:38:36Speaker 3: were like, well, trust God and do what you're going
- 1:38:39Speaker 3: to do, man. You know, it's just pray and have
- 1:38:42Speaker 3: a relationship with God and go find your calling. You know,
- 1:38:45Speaker 3: I didn't really have people hold my hand too much or,
- 1:38:49Speaker 3: overbearing parents or anything like that.
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: I could see it being tough, though, as a parent,
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: and that's what your kid's getting into, you know, because
- 1:38:55Speaker 2: especially our parents, they grew up in the 70s, 80s.
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: Back then, it was a lot different. Yeah, dude, shooting heroin.
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: My dad was rooting for me.
- 1:39:02Speaker 3: My dad works in construction, so I was like, yeah, son,
- 1:39:04Speaker 3: if you want to be a rock star, go do it.
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: Oh, that's awesome. Yeah, it probably is. I guess that's
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: the two different types of parents. It's either you got
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: to go with something safe or you're going to be like, dude,
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: I've had to do something safer. won't you get out
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: there and take a swing at it, boss?
- 1:39:21Speaker 3: Well, what people need to realize is whatever you want
- 1:39:24Speaker 3: to do, you have to make that your safe, make
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: that your safety net. Like don't, you can't, you can
- 1:39:28Speaker 3: only go so long with like a backup.
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: Plan or a side job. You can't be half in,
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: half out.
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: Eventually you're going to just have to dive into it
- 1:39:34Speaker 3: and make that your safety net.
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: Figure it out.
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point, man.
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: Even with like comedy, you hear a lot of comics
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: started out sleeping in the back of their cars. I mean,
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: same with musicians sleeping out in their cars to go
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: do another show the next day and You just got
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: to send it.
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember I was in love one time with
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: a girl, and I was like, I tried to stop
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: and do real estate for a while, and I couldn't
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: do real estate real good. I actually filled out one
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: of the leases wrong or something.
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: Bought the house yourself.
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: No, I had to pay some lady's rent, though.
- 1:40:10Speaker 4: Really?
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I messed up.
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: During COVID, I sold roofs.
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: You sold roofs?
- 1:40:17Speaker 3: Yeah, during 2020 when those two or three hurricanes hit
- 1:40:21Speaker 3: the Gulf Coast at once.
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:40:23Speaker 3: Everybody was down there just selling roofs, and I was
- 1:40:25Speaker 3: working with one of the companies that was owned by
- 1:40:28Speaker 3: one of my friends because he knew COVID had happened
- 1:40:31Speaker 3: and shows weren't very common at the time, so he
- 1:40:35Speaker 3: hooked me up with a job working with him. I
- 1:40:37Speaker 3: think I sold three or four roofs, and every single
- 1:40:39Speaker 3: roof that I sold, he lost money on. He'd get
- 1:40:42Speaker 3: under there and just find more and more stuff wrong
- 1:40:44Speaker 3: with it. It ended up being like a $ 40, 000 job,
- 1:40:47Speaker 3: and the insurance only covered like $ 20, 000 of it.
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: You're like, Brandon, what the hell? I'm not a good
- 1:40:52Speaker 2: roof seller, man.
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: I'm not a good salesman, period, because a salesman's job
- 1:40:56Speaker 3: is to convince you to buy something, and my attitude
- 1:40:59Speaker 3: was just like, buy it or not, I don't care.
- 1:41:02Speaker 3: If you don't want it, no skin off my back.
- 1:41:04Speaker 3: It's like the opposite of what you're supposed to do.
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: Hurricane jobs are a real thing where we are.
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: It's really true, huh?
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: You hope for them hurricanes.
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: Well, it's so funny. It's like, uh, you kind of like, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: So many of my friends work in like where they
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: sell the, um, kelp process, like people's insurance claims and
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: all of that, man.
- 1:41:21Speaker 2: That's what I got during COVID. My fiance's dad, uh,
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: is an insurance adjuster. So I was like untrained. So
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: I was climbing on people's roofs, marking stuff with a,
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: I had no idea. I was up there just circling stuff.
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: Just drawing whatever.
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: I did.
- 1:41:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: I'd signed my name on half of them. Just go
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: up there and circle damage. And then, Take a picture
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: of it. Well, what's scary is... I would hate to
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: be those homeowners. You got this hippie coming and climbing
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: on your roof. Up there coloring and drawing.
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: Yeah, he's just writing widespread panic lyrics up there. Yeah,
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: you need a new roof.
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: Draw the Wayland symbol.
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Have you guys gotten to meet widespread?
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: No, no. I mean, we listen... I wouldn't say we're
- 1:42:02Speaker 2: the biggest fans, but I mean, I think everybody's listened
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: to them at this point.
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. It's just something... You don't hear a lot
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: of people get to meet. It's just they're kind of
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: like one of those interesting groups, you know?
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: It's like we played with Eric Church, didn't meet him.
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: He sent a bottle of whiskey with a note, but
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: we didn't meet the guy. I think it's because he
- 1:42:18Speaker 2: would literally fly in and play the show and fly out.
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: I think that's how a lot of those really, really
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: big guys are. They come in, get business done, and
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: they're out. I went to Eric's house a couple years ago. Oh, yeah,
- 1:42:28Speaker 2: you hung out with him.
- 1:42:29Speaker 3: Yeah, and wrote a song. Me and Matthew and Drew wrote.
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: A song with him.
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: How did something like that get set up?
- 1:42:35Speaker 2: I have no idea.
- 1:42:36Speaker 3: I think one.
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: Of them.
- 1:42:40Speaker 3: Booking agents reached out to him?
- 1:42:41Speaker 2: Probably. I think so.
- 1:42:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it got set up to the managers,
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: and I don't really know. I can't remember how that
- 1:42:47Speaker 3: went about, if he reached out to us or if
- 1:42:49Speaker 3: we reached out to him.
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: Are there writing sessions that you have scheduled coming up
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: kind of thing? Or is that just like once in
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: a while sort of thing? Because you guys have a
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: new album, so you won't be writing for a while,
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: or you just kind of write as you go?
- 1:43:04Speaker 3: Me, Drew, and Matthew make a yearly trip up here
- 1:43:07Speaker 3: in January. after the new year, and we usually stay
- 1:43:10Speaker 3: up here for a week and do a bunch of writing.
- 1:43:13Speaker 3: And we're trying to do that more often now. But yeah,
- 1:43:19Speaker 3: sometimes we'll meet people too and just get a co-write scheduled.
- 1:43:23Speaker 3: A lot of times, though, when we write our stuff
- 1:43:28Speaker 3: of our own, it happens when we're at home. It's
- 1:43:30Speaker 3: very hard to write and make music when you're touring
- 1:43:32Speaker 3: all the time.
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: Yeah, and most of our songs come from with you
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: know brandon drew and matthew writing and rather than from
- 1:43:38Speaker 2: a co-write somewhere.
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: Yeah it's just kind of how it happens that's how
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: it happens man we.
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: Play all the new records at the live shows pretty
- 1:43:48Speaker 2: much oh sweet sweet that's how we test them out yeah.
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: And so the feedback the response has been good.
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: Well that's how we even do it before we even
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: go in the studio we just start playing stuff if
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: the crowd if we don't feel a good uh, response
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: and we kind of go back and change a couple
- 1:44:02Speaker 2: things and they kind of grow with us on the
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: road and we get, I mean, it's like, it's quick feedback.
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: You're constantly in a space where you can experiment.
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: Yeah, we can test.
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. That's pretty awesome, huh?
- 1:44:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: It's like going out and trying jokes on the crowd to.
- 1:44:15Speaker 2: See if it lasts or not.
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: Yeah. No, it's, that is one nice thing about having
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: shows where you're just kind of cruising along and you're
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: working and you're writing at the same time. Cause I
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: learned a lot of times in the moment up on stage,
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: you know, I think it's, you can write it, but it's, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: After a while, you kind of know your voice too
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: and you know what will kind of roll for you.
- 1:44:32Speaker 3: I think that's what you can't get. And I'm not
- 1:44:36Speaker 3: knocking anybody who does like The Voice or American Idol
- 1:44:38Speaker 3: because if that's your way, if that's the path you
- 1:44:41Speaker 3: want to take, then cool. But you can't skip the
- 1:44:45Speaker 3: road dogging it. You can't skip playing in front of
- 1:44:48Speaker 3: a crowd or playing in front of empty rooms. No
- 1:44:51Speaker 3: matter if you win a TV show or not, you're
- 1:44:52Speaker 3: still going to have to acquire that experience or it's just,
- 1:44:57Speaker 3: you're going to have a hard time navigating, trying to
- 1:45:00Speaker 3: figure out how to work a crowd or figure out
- 1:45:02Speaker 3: what works and what doesn't work.
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point. I would hate to have
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: gotten to, had a chance to have a larger crowd
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: and not known. Yeah. I mean, even then it's still
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: tough sometimes because it's still, you're in front of a
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: huge group of people. I mean, you see all the time,
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: like entertainers have problems with people throwing them out. We've
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: had to throw people out of shows or people throwing
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: stuff at, Like, Nicki Minaj gets something thrown at her
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: every other week, it looks like.
- 1:45:30Speaker 2: I don't understand that.
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: Yeah, me neither. But it's like there's always going to
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: be that element that you're in a live space.
- 1:45:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: But to not have had the reps of, like, I
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: know how to be here.
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: It gives you some confidence, too.
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: But, yeah, I couldn't imagine, especially a comedian, like you're saying,
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: that just gets thrown out to the wolves. You hear
- 1:45:47Speaker 2: something in an arena, good luck. But a lot of
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: those guys off Kill Tony will have to do that.
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: That's a good point.
- 1:45:51Speaker 2: They go from a minute to– I don't know what
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: you get as an opener. Well, you get a couple more.
- 1:45:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: That's a goal. I remember when you got to, they
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: usually start you with three minutes.
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: As a, as a like first opener.
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: Yeah. Comedian with three minutes. Like when you're first starting out,
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: they're like, okay, you're on a show. It's like, you're
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: going to do three minutes.
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: And you're like, okay, can I get through three minutes?
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: And if you have to get down early, you're just like,
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: I'm done. And they're like, well, you weren't, but okay,
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: come on back here. You know? Um, And then you
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: try to get up to five. And when you really
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: start feeling like you're rocking as a comedian is when
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: you get to like.
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: That 15 mark?
- 1:46:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I could see that. You got a little time
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: to get uncomfortable.
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: You're like, I might go on the road. You might
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: start saying shit like that to people. And people are like,
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: you're out of your mind. You work at Dairy Queen.
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? You're out of your mind.
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: I got a 15 minute set, man. You don't know me.
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: You don't know me.
- 1:46:43Speaker 4: I'm out of here. Yeah.
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: And you just start yelling at people while you're trying
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: to throw that trash into the bin at night behind the.
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: Testing it out on the on the homeless people still
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: hanging around outside yeah.
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: And then that's when it gets like that's when you
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: can kind of go on the road with somebody but
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: then there's those moments where you get stranded you burned
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: all your 15 in 10 minutes it was a bad
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: show and you still have to kill five.
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: Minutes oh we've we've had shows where you just.
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: Want it to be over yeah yeah what is it
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: sometimes just the energy of a room it's just the
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: night just is what it is i.
- 1:47:13Speaker 3: Mean we had one recent sometimes it's just from being
- 1:47:16Speaker 3: tired like we're we're trying to thing now where No
- 1:47:20Speaker 3: more than four shows a week and no more than
- 1:47:22Speaker 3: three in a row.
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:47:23Speaker 3: Because by that third show, and we've had five shows
- 1:47:26Speaker 3: in a row, and it's like by that third show,
- 1:47:29Speaker 3: you usually.
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: Need a break.
- 1:47:31Speaker 3: And at the end of the day, you're taken away
- 1:47:33Speaker 3: from the crowd anyway because if you're up there tired
- 1:47:37Speaker 3: and too tired to give it your all, then you're
- 1:47:39Speaker 3: selling your crowd short.
- 1:47:40Speaker 2: Yeah, you just kind of go into the motions. But,
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: I mean, we've done that, and people at the show
- 1:47:44Speaker 2: are like, that's the best show I've ever seen. And
- 1:47:46Speaker 2: sometimes we're sorry.
- 1:47:48Speaker 3: Sometimes it's like Tortuga though, where it's like everybody's vibing
- 1:47:51Speaker 3: to a completely different style of music than we play.
- 1:47:54Speaker 3: And then we show up just playing rock and roll
- 1:47:56Speaker 3: and the crowd's just like, bring back the, bring.
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: Back the beat.
- 1:47:59Speaker 2: It's like they were like doing, it's like a bro
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: country or pop country. And then we're in the middle
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: of it and we don't even consider ourselves country. It's
- 1:48:07Speaker 2: just like we ruined everybody's beach party.
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:48:09Speaker 2: They're out there. They want songs about getting drunk.
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: Oh, I could see that. You guys are kind of
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: in a little bit, not your own space, but what
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: is it?
- 1:48:16Speaker 2: I don't know. We just do what we want, I guess.
- 1:48:19Speaker 2: We call it non-stop. rock.
- 1:48:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:48:21Speaker 2: I like that.
- 1:48:22Speaker 3: Non-denominational rock and roll.
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: I like that. It's just like all over the place.
- 1:48:26Speaker 2: Everybody's at that beach, and we're like, here's one about
- 1:48:29Speaker 2: mental health.
- 1:48:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: Enjoy.
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: If you know somebody.
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: Strays, though. That's kind of strays. That's what strays do, man.
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: Yeah, that part came from just kind of being- I
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: wouldn't say outcast, but we were always a little different
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: from the crowds we grew up in. Didn't quite fit in.
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: I went to private school. I didn't fit in with
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: a lot of those kids.
- 1:48:46Speaker 3: I didn't really put that together, too. Yeah, we are
- 1:48:48Speaker 3: kind of straying from the... From the norm? From the norm, musically.
- 1:48:53Speaker 3: A lot of people don't really know where to put us.
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: Well, there's some riffs in there. Sometimes I feel like
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: some of it has an Aerosmith kind of... It's interesting.
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: I'll go through different moments where I feel different things,
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: you know?
- 1:49:03Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just... I mean, when we're making music, we
- 1:49:07Speaker 2: don't try to sound like anybody. Or, I mean, we
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: just do what we think sounds cool.
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: I think that's really cool to find your own little niche.
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: Yeah, well, look, I think it's just a testament to,
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: but to be able to figure out what works for
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: five guys at once, it's pretty remarkable, you know?
- 1:49:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: Because you really have, you have five inputs, even though
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: you have only three or four guys to contribute maybe
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: on the songwriting edge, but.
- 1:49:29Speaker 2: We still all work it up together. Yeah, we all
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: create the songs together, yeah.
- 1:49:33Speaker 3: But then, yeah, it just goes back to not being
- 1:49:35Speaker 3: able to skip that step. Playing in front of crowds is,
- 1:49:38Speaker 3: together as a band and road-dogging it. And everything that
- 1:49:43Speaker 3: comes along with all of that, that's where you start
- 1:49:46Speaker 3: to figure out how each other plays or what each
- 1:49:50Speaker 3: other is about to do. It's kind of like, what
- 1:49:53Speaker 3: is it, telekinesis?
- 1:49:54Speaker 2: Telekinesis. Telekinetic? No, it's not telekinetic. What's the word we're
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: looking for? Telepathic.
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: Women all get on the same menstrual cycle or whatever,
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: like on a volleyball team?
- 1:50:04Speaker 2: We definitely have that.
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:50:06Speaker 3: Well, we're on the same musical cycle.
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: I like that, man. Any unique things that have happened
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: out on the road? Any wildcat?
- 1:50:14Speaker 2: Oh, man. We got stories for days.
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: Anything that really shook you out there?
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: Man, recent or just in general? Back in the day,
- 1:50:21Speaker 2: we've had bus fires. We've blown. We did a whole
- 1:50:25Speaker 2: transmission swap ourselves in Colorado.
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: No way.
- 1:50:28Speaker 2: We bought another bus.
- 1:50:30Speaker 3: We were going through. Colorado, I think, I-70 had washed out.
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I-70 was washed out, so we had to go
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: the fair play up through where South Park is, and
- 1:50:40Speaker 2: it's like 13,000 feet. And we had to go the
- 1:50:42Speaker 2: back way to get to Grand Junction.
- 1:50:45Speaker 3: We were going up the side of this mountain, and
- 1:50:48Speaker 3: I was laying in my bunk.
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: I was driving.
- 1:50:49Speaker 3: I hear, like, Andrew screaming. I had my headphones in,
- 1:50:52Speaker 3: and I hear him screaming, like, we just blew the
- 1:50:53Speaker 3: transmission out. And we're literally on the side of a mountain.
- 1:50:57Speaker 2: Yeah, it's 90 degrees straight down, 90 degrees straight up,
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: two-lane road. Just right there.
- 1:51:03Speaker 3: Like right against the side of it with rocks and
- 1:51:05Speaker 3: there's a falling rock sign. And Drew like steps out
- 1:51:08Speaker 3: of the bus and hits some gravel and immediately falls down.
- 1:51:11Speaker 2: Just pissed.
- 1:51:12Speaker 3: He gets up and starts punching the bus.
- 1:51:15Speaker 2: We're all just, I just knew it was happening. We're
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: just going. And when you get up that high, with
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: our diesel especially, you lose, you know the math, you
- 1:51:23Speaker 2: lose what, 3% for every thousand feet or so?
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: Of what, brain power or whatever?
- 1:51:28Speaker 2: Our brain power.
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: No, for the motor.
- 1:51:29Speaker 2: For the motor.
- 1:51:30Speaker 4: Oh.
- 1:51:30Speaker 2: Like if the air is so thin, the motor has
- 1:51:33Speaker 2: to work harder. Probably some brain power too. Yeah, we're
- 1:51:34Speaker 2: definitely losing some brain power. I'm not good with altitude.
- 1:51:38Speaker 2: I've had some bad times, but.
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: And how'd you get that thing back down? You get
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: a tow truck?
- 1:51:42Speaker 2: Yeah, we had to order.
- 1:51:43Speaker 3: We had to get a semi truck.
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:51:45Speaker 3: And it loaded the bus up and our trailer.
- 1:51:47Speaker 2: Like a $ 5, 000 tow to the Univista.
- 1:51:50Speaker 3: A state trooper gave us a ride as well out
- 1:51:52Speaker 3: of the goodness of his heart. And yeah, Univista, Colorado.
- 1:51:58Speaker 3: And there was like one hotel room left in that
- 1:52:00Speaker 3: whole town. Cause I was calling and calling and calling
- 1:52:03Speaker 3: while we were waiting on the tow truck and finally
- 1:52:05Speaker 3: got it. And we all piled up in that one
- 1:52:07Speaker 3: hotel room. I'm like, well, what are we going to do?
- 1:52:10Speaker 2: Me and Andrew.
- 1:52:11Speaker 3: So we had the bus dropped off at a transmission
- 1:52:13Speaker 3: shop in town and it was probably a good four
- 1:52:16Speaker 3: miles away. And we, uh, got up the next morning
- 1:52:20Speaker 3: right before the sun come up and just start walking
- 1:52:22Speaker 3: towards it.
- 1:52:24Speaker 2: And, uh, And we're like 10,000 feet. I mean, we aren't,
- 1:52:27Speaker 2: we're sea level men. We ain't built for that.
- 1:52:29Speaker 3: We finally make it to the transmission shop and he's like, man, I'm,
- 1:52:32Speaker 3: I'm two months backed up.
- 1:52:33Speaker 2: Get this thing out of here. I can't work on this.
- 1:52:35Speaker 4: Oh.
- 1:52:35Speaker 2: And so we're walking back to the hotel wondering what
- 1:52:38Speaker 2: we're going to do. And we've, we've been in that
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: situation before. And cause I mean, we've had to roll
- 1:52:42Speaker 2: up the shops like, Hey, we ain't leaving. You going
- 1:52:45Speaker 2: to fix it? Are we staying here with you? And
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: it's not like, we just like, we just have to
- 1:52:49Speaker 2: throw money at people. Like just work on it. We'll
- 1:52:51Speaker 2: pay you whatever. And he's not having it.
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: Damn.
- 1:52:53Speaker 2: He's like, sorry.
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: Isn't that where the Shining is, where the hotel is?
- 1:52:57Speaker 3: I don't think so.
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: I don't think so. This is not a very nice,
- 1:53:02Speaker 2: I mean, it's beautiful, but it's not a big town,
- 1:53:04Speaker 2: like where that big hotel would be. Ben might have
- 1:53:06Speaker 2: to pull that one up. I'm not sure where that's at.
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: Yeah, see where that's at, man.
- 1:53:09Speaker 2: It is up in the mountains somewhere, though. Is that Montana?
- 1:53:13Speaker 2: It's in Oregon, man. Dude, that place is in England? No,
- 1:53:18Speaker 2: the interiors were filmed.
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: No, the Shining, yeah. The interior of the real Overlook Hotel, maybe? Mm-hmm.
- 1:53:25Speaker 3: You know, we got Good Godly Woman in the sequel
- 1:53:27Speaker 3: to The Shining for like two seconds.
- 1:53:29Speaker 4: Oh, yeah?
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: Dr.
- 1:53:33Speaker 2: Sleep. But to continue what we were talking about was
- 1:53:37Speaker 2: we started walking back just like, what do we do?
- 1:53:39Speaker 2: And me and Brandon's hitchhiking through this town in Colorado,
- 1:53:44Speaker 2: literally walking out with a thumb out. Yeah, with a
- 1:53:45Speaker 2: thumb out.
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: Nuh-uh.
- 1:53:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:53:46Speaker 3: And this old guy in the Jeep picks us up,
- 1:53:49Speaker 3: and he gave us a ride to the hotel.
- 1:53:50Speaker 2: We were just like, we have to do something. We've
- 1:53:52Speaker 2: been picked up by strangers a bunch of times.
- 1:53:54Speaker 3: He dropped us off and he's like, hey, there's a
- 1:53:56Speaker 3: white water rafting company that sells buses like the one
- 1:53:59Speaker 3: you're talking about. Maybe hit them up, see if you
- 1:54:01Speaker 3: can buy a bus from them. And we were like, yeah, whatever.
- 1:54:04Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:54:05Speaker 3: Still tried to find someone to rebuild the transmission. And
- 1:54:07Speaker 3: the closest person that would was in Denver.
- 1:54:10Speaker 2: It's like three hours away.
- 1:54:12Speaker 3: He said, if you pull it and bring it to me,
- 1:54:13Speaker 3: I'll build it for you. And so before we resorted
- 1:54:17Speaker 3: to that, we had rented a U-Haul van and went
- 1:54:20Speaker 3: and talked to that company that the white water rafting
- 1:54:23Speaker 3: company and he had a bus just like ours that
- 1:54:27Speaker 3: had a freshly rebuilt transmission in it and he put
- 1:54:29Speaker 3: like 30 miles on it and parked it because he
- 1:54:31Speaker 3: bought a school bus they use the buses to bus
- 1:54:33Speaker 3: people out to the river to white water and uh
- 1:54:39Speaker 3: he said he'd sell us the bus for three grand
- 1:54:42Speaker 3: and then he figured out we were a band and
- 1:54:44Speaker 3: he's like well if y'all play a show for us
- 1:54:45Speaker 3: i'll unlock a grand off the price.
- 1:54:46Speaker 2: No way and we were here for like four days
- 1:54:49Speaker 2: And the place is, so they do that white water rafting.
- 1:54:52Speaker 2: All these teenagers come to be the gods. Like a
- 1:54:55Speaker 2: bunch of river rats come in and they, you know
- 1:54:57Speaker 2: those campers on the back of a pickup truck?
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:55:00Speaker 2: It's a field full of them.
- 1:55:02Speaker 3: Just laying on the ground.
- 1:55:03Speaker 2: That's where these kids are living.
- 1:55:05Speaker 4: In those?
- 1:55:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and the grass is all grown up around them.
- 1:55:07Speaker 2: And they don't have power. So it's just the ground
- 1:55:10Speaker 2: and then the camper top? And the camper top. And
- 1:55:12Speaker 2: it's like a trailer park of them. They're everywhere.
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: But it's not a full trailer. It's just the little.
- 1:55:16Speaker 2: It's just that little cabin. It's just a camper beat,
- 1:55:17Speaker 2: isn't it? What do you mean? Yeah, I mean, well,
- 1:55:20Speaker 2: I think you can stand up in them, but they have, like,
- 1:55:22Speaker 2: that little part in the top you can sleep in.
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: Here's what I'm picking up. Picture, like, a pickup truck.
- 1:55:27Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: And then that thing that goes on the back.
- 1:55:29Speaker 2: That goes on the bed. Yeah, like, sits down in
- 1:55:31Speaker 2: the bed.
- 1:55:31Speaker 3: It goes on the bed and kind of goes over
- 1:55:32Speaker 3: the cab. Goes over the top of the cab.
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: Oh, no, not that. I'm just thinking of the one
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: that just goes, that's even with the top of the cab.
- 1:55:37Speaker 2: Oh, you're thinking of a camper shell.
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:55:39Speaker 2: No, this is like, it's like a motorhome. Well.
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: Now I know what you're talking about.
- 1:55:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: With the piece that goes over the top.
- 1:55:45Speaker 2: And they're all windows. Put, like, a window unit in
- 1:55:46Speaker 2: them sometimes.
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:55:47Speaker 2: And these are straight hippies.
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: And there's no trucks, just those?
- 1:55:50Speaker 2: Just those. And the grass is all grown over top
- 1:55:52Speaker 2: of them. They're living in them. Yeah. Yeah, it's like those.
- 1:55:55Speaker 2: Not as nice. Like that one on the top right.
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: Yeah, 100%. No, left. That one's too big.
- 1:56:00Speaker 2: That one. It's a bunch of those. And these kids
- 1:56:03Speaker 2: are straight up real life hippies. Like straight up. We
- 1:56:07Speaker 2: were playing. We set up and played for them and
- 1:56:09Speaker 2: they were dancing in between songs kind of thing. It's
- 1:56:12Speaker 2: all gravel. It's all dusty in here in the rafting building.
- 1:56:15Speaker 2: It was probably 30 or 40 of these kids. When
- 1:56:17Speaker 2: I say kids, they're probably in their late teens, early 20s.
- 1:56:21Speaker 3: It was in the big building where they keep all
- 1:56:23Speaker 3: the boats, and we sat up in there, and it
- 1:56:25Speaker 3: was like a gravel floor and just the dust from
- 1:56:27Speaker 3: them like.
- 1:56:28Speaker 2: Scooting and shuffling. Shuffling, doing that hippie shuffle.
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: Dude, that's incredible. And that was, yeah, look up, see
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: what rafting company that was.
- 1:56:35Speaker 2: That's phenomenal. Yeah, whitewater rafting in Buena Vista. Yeah, we can,
- 1:56:37Speaker 2: I mean, there's a couple that's in Buena Vista. Some
- 1:56:41Speaker 2: whitewater something.
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: So then you guys take off in that new bus?
- 1:56:45Speaker 2: Well, no.
- 1:56:46Speaker 3: We get the tow truck to drop our bus off
- 1:56:49Speaker 3: next to the one we just purchased, and then we
- 1:56:51Speaker 3: just start taking them apart. And we took the transmission
- 1:56:54Speaker 3: out of ours, took the transmission out of the other one,
- 1:56:58Speaker 3: and swapped them around. And I did something wrong in
- 1:57:01Speaker 3: the process. I didn't put the torque converter all the
- 1:57:03Speaker 3: way in. And so we bolted it up and bent
- 1:57:06Speaker 3: a pump gear and had to pull it back out.
- 1:57:08Speaker 3: And take it to that original transmission shop. And we
- 1:57:11Speaker 3: pulled one of the, what he was talking about, like, Hey,
- 1:57:13Speaker 3: we need you to fix this.
- 1:57:14Speaker 2: We ain't leaving. He ended up having a soft spot.
- 1:57:17Speaker 2: He actually helped us out big time.
- 1:57:18Speaker 3: He took it apart and straightened out what I had
- 1:57:20Speaker 3: accidentally bent and put it back together. And then we
- 1:57:22Speaker 3: got it back in there. A two day job turned
- 1:57:26Speaker 3: into like a five day job and it was miserable.
- 1:57:27Speaker 2: But while like Brandon and a couple of the, and
- 1:57:29Speaker 2: this is just the five of us on the road together,
- 1:57:32Speaker 2: they would be working on dropping the transmission or getting
- 1:57:34Speaker 2: the other one ready. Me and Zach, Would be just
- 1:57:37Speaker 2: ripping every part we could get our hands on on
- 1:57:39Speaker 2: this bus. You don't see these buses ever in like
- 1:57:42Speaker 2: a pull apart. Usually somebody will take them. It's a 7.3 diesel.
- 1:57:45Speaker 2: Those never show up. So we're getting every part you
- 1:57:47Speaker 2: could put a hand on snatching it out. We took
- 1:57:50Speaker 2: out like the turbo. We took the back AC unit.
- 1:57:53Speaker 2: We took the driver's chair. Took the steering box underneath it.
- 1:57:59Speaker 2: That thing would never drive ever again in its life.
- 1:58:01Speaker 2: We just straight pull apart.
- 1:58:03Speaker 3: Somebody asked if they could have it, and we were like.
- 1:58:05Speaker 2: Yeah, he was like we'll just drive us huh yeah
- 1:58:07Speaker 2: he said steer it over here and i'll pull i
- 1:58:08Speaker 2: was like you ain't steering nothing so we straight left
- 1:58:11Speaker 2: it you're like we took the steer we took everything
- 1:58:14Speaker 2: that thing was we took the bumper we swapped the
- 1:58:17Speaker 2: bumpers everything i took the taillights but we um we
- 1:58:22Speaker 2: got it put back our bus put back together with
- 1:58:24Speaker 2: all these other parts and Got down to Mississippi.
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: So you guys had to miss some shows then, or
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: you had a little break?
- 1:58:29Speaker 3: I think we missed one show.
- 1:58:30Speaker 2: Did we? I don't know if we did.
- 1:58:32Speaker 3: Where were we hitting?
- 1:58:34Speaker 2: Mississippi. No, we were hitting somewhere else. Oh, Grand Junction. Yeah,
- 1:58:37Speaker 2: we missed the last Colorado show, but we had four
- 1:58:40Speaker 2: days off, so we made it. We just buckled up
- 1:58:43Speaker 2: and drove. Wow. Yeah, that was a time in our
- 1:58:47Speaker 2: lives that was... Looking back, it was fun. In the moment,
- 1:58:49Speaker 2: it was... I think it was that American Adventure Expeditions.
- 1:58:53Speaker 2: Looks familiar.
- 1:58:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: We went and stopped somewhere that's a good whitewater raft,
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: and it was in Tennessee. That was over near Chattanooga.
- 1:59:01Speaker 2: I've never done it before. It looks fun. It's nice, man.
- 1:59:03Speaker 2: They didn't take us out.
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: You'd think that would have been part of the deal,
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: but there's your bus.
- 1:59:10Speaker 2: Oh, man. That's it. I mean, that's the town.
- 1:59:13Speaker 3: That's where we were trapped for four days.
- 1:59:14Speaker 2: It was beautiful. Oh, yeah, but we were underneath that thing,
- 1:59:18Speaker 2: bench pressing this transmission, and this dude comes by, and he,
- 1:59:22Speaker 2: crawls up under there with us hippie he had like
- 1:59:24Speaker 2: a big mustache he's like let me touch everybody get
- 1:59:27Speaker 2: his hands on us eliza thornberry's mustache we're having a
- 1:59:30Speaker 2: moment right now it's like yeah man we're having a
- 1:59:32Speaker 2: moment this whole week thank you then he offered us
- 1:59:35Speaker 2: some drugs he's like man y'all like to party like
- 1:59:38Speaker 2: yeah we like to party he's like man i got
- 1:59:40Speaker 2: ketamine i got cocaine I've got all sorts of stuff.
- 1:59:45Speaker 2: We're like, no, man, we're good. We're going to bench
- 1:59:48Speaker 2: press this transmission.
- 1:59:49Speaker 3: Wasn't really good at reading the room. Just covered in
- 1:59:51Speaker 3: grease trying to put a bus bed together.
- 1:59:53Speaker 1: I ain't doing no cocaine with someone who's super homeless. Oh, yeah.
- 2:00:01Speaker 1: If someone is a little homeless, yeah, I'll see where
- 2:00:04Speaker 1: you're not living at. Let's party.
- 2:00:06Speaker 2: Come back to my camper. We'll hang out.
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: But if somebody's super homeless, dude, I'm out.
- 2:00:10Speaker 3: That could have been it, too. That looks pretty familiar.
- 2:00:12Speaker 2: It was, what was across, there was two of them
- 2:00:15Speaker 2: across the street from each other. There was a Domino's
- 2:00:17Speaker 2: down the street. That's all we had to eat.
- 2:00:19Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, there always is.
- 2:00:20Speaker 2: Next to a mechanic shop. They shared a driveway.
- 2:00:22Speaker 1: Because they hated each other. Where'd you guys sleep at
- 2:00:24Speaker 1: while you were there?
- 2:00:25Speaker 2: The hotel was right in front of the rafting place.
- 2:00:27Speaker 2: I think that last.
- 2:00:28Speaker 3: Night we had to sleep on the bus.
- 2:00:30Speaker 2: Yeah, we did.
- 2:00:30Speaker 3: As it was still blocked up, just we opened the
- 2:00:32Speaker 3: windows and camped out in it, man. Just like the hippies.
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: Hell, yeah. And that was when you were, that's when
- 2:00:39Speaker 1: you're like, oh, now I see where that guy was
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: coming from. Yeah.
- 2:00:42Speaker 2: It was, that was a, that was a tough time.
- 2:00:46Speaker 3: Yeah, it was dominoes.
- 2:00:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think it was, it's the one across,
- 2:00:50Speaker 2: it's the Adventure Company.
- 2:00:52Speaker 1: Yeah. That's who you guys are, man. Y'all are the
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: Adventure Company.
- 2:00:55Speaker 2: I believe it was them.
- 2:00:56Speaker 1: You guys have been on a lot of adventures, man.
- 2:00:58Speaker 2: I got a good rating. That's the raft. That's the rafting.
- 2:01:00Speaker 2: Look at this. There's that building, go up one, Ben.
- 2:01:04Speaker 2: That one.
- 2:01:04Speaker 1: No, y'all played in that raft room? That one.
- 2:01:06Speaker 2: Yeah, we played in that raft room right there.
- 2:01:09Speaker 1: Amen.
- 2:01:09Speaker 2: That's where we set up. Wow. They were still rafts
- 2:01:12Speaker 2: hanging around. People were hanging out at them watching the show.
- 2:01:14Speaker 2: It was kind of cool.
- 2:01:15Speaker 1: Bro, that's unreal looking.
- 2:01:17Speaker 2: We'll have to get in contact with those folks.
- 2:01:19Speaker 1: Dude, if you guys went back through there at some point.
- 2:01:22Speaker 2: Probably that bus is probably still laying where we left it.
- 2:01:24Speaker 3: We need to go check on that bus.
- 2:01:26Speaker 1: Yeah. Amen, man.
- 2:01:27Speaker 2: They hate that mechanic shop next door. They hated each other.
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: But you guys were kind of like the bridge between
- 2:01:33Speaker 1: them that time. Yeah.
- 2:01:34Speaker 2: Except we left that bus. That mechanic said he was
- 2:01:36Speaker 2: going to go get it. I bet he never went
- 2:01:38Speaker 2: and got it. It's probably still sitting in the same place.
- 2:01:41Speaker 1: Any stray animals you pick up out there? Speaking of
- 2:01:43Speaker 1: the strays.
- 2:01:45Speaker 3: No, not really.
- 2:01:46Speaker 2: I'm trying to think. We've hit some animals.
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: Amen.
- 2:01:50Speaker 4: We did.
- 2:01:50Speaker 1: And RIP, sorry. But hey, look, sometimes the Lord uses
- 2:01:55Speaker 1: you and your vehicle to bring an animal home.
- 2:01:58Speaker 2: Exactly. It's good for the population. They'll just respond somewhere.
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: Yeah. Dude, I'm so excited about the new album. When
- 2:02:05Speaker 1: will it come out? Do we know yet?
- 2:02:07Speaker 3: We're thinking late summer.
- 2:02:09Speaker 2: Yeah, hopefully around August time. It's about to start picking
- 2:02:12Speaker 2: back up again. I think everybody's gonna really like it.
- 2:02:14Speaker 1: I'm amazed that you guys aren't even impressed with yourselves yet.
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: I don't know, man.
- 2:02:19Speaker 2: It's one of those things you kind of can't take
- 2:02:21Speaker 2: it for granted. It can be taken from you tomorrow,
- 2:02:24Speaker 2: you know?
- 2:02:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:02:26Speaker 2: It's like, we could Skinner this thing and die in
- 2:02:29Speaker 2: a plane crash. Hopefully not.
- 2:02:31Speaker 3: People get popular too and they're popular for however long
- 2:02:34Speaker 3: and then time goes by and then nobody knows who
- 2:02:37Speaker 3: they are anymore. That could very well be us.
- 2:02:38Speaker 2: You know, it's, Who knows?
- 2:02:40Speaker 3: Just try to be thankful for it and never want
- 2:02:43Speaker 3: to be, like, complacent, I guess. Always want to be
- 2:02:46Speaker 3: trying to get better and just be a better person,
- 2:02:51Speaker 3: put on a better show, and be a better band,
- 2:02:54Speaker 3: make better music. Just keep, never stop growing, you know?
- 2:02:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:02:59Speaker 1: Well, the rest of us are impressed, man. I'll say that, dude.
- 2:03:02Speaker 2: Good deal. There's a lot better music out there.
- 2:03:04Speaker 1: For sure. Thank you guys so much for making good tunes, and... Yeah,
- 2:03:09Speaker 1: excited to hear the new album. Do we even know
- 2:03:10Speaker 1: a name of it yet?
- 2:03:11Speaker 2: Give it to them, Brandon.
- 2:03:13Speaker 3: Huh?
- 2:03:13Speaker 2: Just give it to them.
- 2:03:14Speaker 1: All right.
- 2:03:15Speaker 3: The album's going to be called Made By These Moments.
- 2:03:18Speaker 2: Nice.
- 2:03:20Speaker 3: It's got a good message to it. I'm excited. I'm
- 2:03:22Speaker 3: excited for people to hear the music, but it's just
- 2:03:24Speaker 3: got a good message as well. So it's going to
- 2:03:28Speaker 3: be cool.
- 2:03:28Speaker 2: No, we've never told anybody that publicly, so.
- 2:03:31Speaker 4: Nope.
- 2:03:31Speaker 1: Nice.
- 2:03:32Speaker 2: You heard it here first.
- 2:03:33Speaker 1: I'm sure you'll email me tomorrow and ask me to
- 2:03:34Speaker 1: take it out, but that's all right.
- 2:03:36Speaker 2: No, don't take it out. We in charge here, buddy.
- 2:03:38Speaker 2: We make the calls.
- 2:03:38Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 2:03:39Speaker 2: We make calls.
- 2:03:41Speaker 1: Yeah, well, thanks for sharing that. Made by these moments, man. Yeah,
- 2:03:45Speaker 1: it's a lot of what life is, man. Making them
- 2:03:47Speaker 1: good ones, too.
- 2:03:48Speaker 2: I mean, that's what it stands for for us. All
- 2:03:50Speaker 2: the stories we were just talking about is why we're here.
- 2:03:53Speaker 2: So it means a lot to us.
- 2:03:56Speaker 4: Amen.
- 2:03:56Speaker 1: Red Clay Strays, boys. Thank you guys so much, man.
- 2:04:01Speaker 1: I appreciate it. Thank you guys for coming and just
- 2:04:03Speaker 1: chatting and spending time. Good to get to know you
- 2:04:05Speaker 1: guys a little bit. Yeah, I look forward to coming
- 2:04:08Speaker 1: out and being able to catch another show soon.
- 2:04:10Speaker 2: Yeah, you just let us know. We always got a
- 2:04:12Speaker 2: spot on the list for you.
- 2:04:13Speaker 1: Gang, baby, you guys stay healthy out there, man.
- 2:04:15Speaker 2: You too. You too, man.
- 2:04:17Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 2:04:25Speaker 4: Cornerstone oh but when I reach that ground I'll share
- 2:04:32Speaker 4: this peace of mind I found I can feel it
- 2:04:36Speaker 4: in my bones
