Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, I'll bet she is on fire wherever she is,
- 0:02Speaker 1: Gene Stother. Taking a week's break here. And I join,
- 0:08Speaker 1: good morning, I'm Gary Saddlemeyer. I join the parade of
- 0:11Speaker 1: fill-in hosts. And I'll do my best to navigate an
- 0:17Speaker 1: hour here. Chip Maxwell back to wrap up the week tomorrow.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Great job yesterday, Lucy Chapman. Peyton Highlock, of course. is
- 0:29Speaker 1: here because he's always here for the Gene Stothert. This
- 0:31Speaker 1: is the KFAB Comment Line with Gene Stothert.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Peyton.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Peyton.
- 0:35Speaker 2: I almost called you. Baylock. Peyton, good morning.
- 0:39Speaker 4: Good morning, Gary.
- 0:39Speaker 2: How are you this morning? Good to see you. I'm well,
- 0:42Speaker 2: thank you.
- 0:42Speaker 1: And look, I thought what we'd do here, because it is,
- 0:47Speaker 1: after all, the KFAB Comment Line is titled that for
- 0:51Speaker 1: a reason. So, in the spirit of that, anything... That
- 0:57Speaker 1: you want to say or ask, I don't know if
- 0:59Speaker 1: I'll have answers, but anything you want to contribute here,
- 1:03Speaker 1: we're open for that, 558-1110. Okay, that's the call-in number.
- 1:09Speaker 1: And I have a couple of emails. The regular one, Peyton, right,
- 1:11Speaker 1: is comment at kfab.com for the Comment Line Show.
- 1:15Speaker 4: That is correct.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I also have mine open, which I always use on
- 1:18Speaker 1: the morning show, studio at kfab.com. So either one of
- 1:22Speaker 1: those or a phone call or whatever you want to do.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Is fine.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Uh, one of the big items, obviously, uh, the news
- 1:32Speaker 1: broke yesterday that, uh, the university of, uh, Nebraska announced
- 1:39Speaker 1: the reseating plan for football.
- 1:43Speaker 2: For the stadium. And, um, I don't know.
- 1:49Speaker 1: It's obviously all about money and, and you can go to,
- 1:53Speaker 1: I think it's, uh, It's a big red receipt.com. You
- 1:56Speaker 1: can find the website and get the details on it. But, uh,
- 2:01Speaker 1: if you are a, uh, a season ticket holder, what
- 2:07Speaker 1: do you think about this? Now, obviously when they're redoing
- 2:10Speaker 1: the stadium, uh, there's going to have to be some
- 2:13Speaker 1: disruption this coming season because they're going to have what, uh,
- 2:18Speaker 1: 20 some thousand fewer seats than we have now. Um,
- 2:23Speaker 1: And so some people aren't going to be able to
- 2:25Speaker 1: get in there that are used to getting in there.
- 2:29Speaker 1: But if you're a seasoned ticket holder, particularly if you're
- 2:33Speaker 1: a legacy seasoned ticket holder, which meant that you have
- 2:41Speaker 1: had the seats for a long time and your contribution
- 2:45Speaker 1: for the privilege of having those seats is minimal, that's
- 2:48Speaker 1: going away. And possibly, and in many cases certainly, going
- 2:54Speaker 1: away with it, is.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Your seat.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Because you are not going to be able to afford
- 3:00Speaker 1: whatever the new requirement is for contributions. I have friends
- 3:07Speaker 1: who have maybe the best seats in the stadium. In fact,
- 3:14Speaker 1: I've been able to use them from time to time.
- 3:19Speaker 1: West Stadium, 27 rows up, and about the 50-yard line.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And They've been in the family, Peyton. They've been in
- 3:28Speaker 1: the family for, I don't know, 100, I don't know,
- 3:31Speaker 1: back probably 100 years. I heard Rosie this morning talking
- 3:34Speaker 1: about his family's seats, you know, 100 and some years.
- 3:39Speaker 1: And that's all different now. That's all going to be
- 3:41Speaker 1: different for those legacy ticket holders. And it's going to
- 3:47Speaker 1: raise a heck of a lot more money than the
- 3:49Speaker 1: stadium makes during football season now. And all of that.
- 3:54Speaker 1: But I can imagine a lot of people are going
- 3:58Speaker 1: to say, I'm done. Even if they could afford it,
- 4:00Speaker 1: they're going to say, I'm done.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I'm done.
- 4:01Speaker 1: I'm done with all of the manipulation. I'm done with
- 4:05Speaker 1: everything being about money. I've supported this program since I
- 4:10Speaker 1: was old enough to know anything. And I go and
- 4:14Speaker 1: I pay. But I'm done. And others are saying, okay, well,
- 4:19Speaker 1: we'll see what's possible here. For this coming season, or
- 4:24Speaker 1: this current, not this current season, but for next season,
- 4:28Speaker 1: and I've got some of the particulars here, everybody for
- 4:33Speaker 1: the coming season will have to find different seats or
- 4:41Speaker 1: reapply for seats for the coming season because of the
- 4:44Speaker 1: disruption in the stadium configuration. For the following season, when
- 4:51Speaker 1: the stadium's done, And we got 80,000 or whatever the
- 4:57Speaker 1: final number is. That's when the screws really get turned
- 5:02Speaker 1: on people who want good seats. I mean, that's just
- 5:05Speaker 1: the way it's going to be. It's the way it's
- 5:06Speaker 1: going to be, Gary. And I wonder what is the
- 5:09Speaker 1: best way to cue the people up to pick their seats.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Who gets first priority? Is it how much you donate?
- 5:21Speaker 5: How.
- 5:22Speaker 4: You've had seats priority-wise with seniority?
- 5:25Speaker 2: I don't know about that.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I think it's mostly going to be keyed to donation level.
- 5:28Speaker 4: And it will be. And I don't know how I
- 5:32Speaker 4: feel about that. I understand the money coming in. We
- 5:35Speaker 4: talked about it yesterday with Chris Baker, and I know
- 5:38Speaker 4: it's for Nebraska volleyball, but something that was talked about
- 5:41Speaker 4: was if you want to have those first five rows,
- 5:46Speaker 4: you need to.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Donate $ 20, 000 per seat.
- 5:47Speaker 6: Wow.
- 5:49Speaker 4: To keep your tickets.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Is that what it's going to be? Season tickets.
- 5:52Speaker 4: And that's volleyball. I'm sure the numbers and the money
- 5:54Speaker 4: in football is way bigger.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Right, right.
- 5:58Speaker 4: It's a lot of money.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Let's go to Liz. This is the KFAB comment line.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Gary Saddlemyer here for Gene Stothert this morning. And Liz,
- 6:08Speaker 1: you're on NewsRadio 1110 KFAB.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Good morning.
- 6:12Speaker 7: Thank you, Gary.
- 6:12Speaker 2: You bet.
- 6:13Speaker 8: Great to have you.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 6:14Speaker 7: I don't know if you have any say, or I
- 6:16Speaker 7: know Jim does, but I'm talking about the Nebraska Hall
- 6:19Speaker 7: of Fame.
- 6:20Speaker 2: The State Hall of Fame.
- 6:22Speaker 3: The State Hall of Fame.
- 6:24Speaker 7: But, you know, he's up for sainthood, and just think
- 6:27Speaker 7: what he has done, not just for Omaha, but the
- 6:31Speaker 7: international presence that Boys Town has had.
- 6:34Speaker 2: And your question is?
- 6:37Speaker 7: Well, what do you think of that idea, and is
- 6:39Speaker 7: there anything you can do to promote that?
- 6:41Speaker 2: He's not in the Hall of Fame yet. I'm sure
- 6:43Speaker 2: he is.
- 6:46Speaker 7: I don't think so. I'm not sure, but I don't
- 6:49Speaker 7: think so.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Oh, I can't imagine. Let me put it this way.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I haven't looked at the list lately, but I can't
- 6:54Speaker 1: imagine that Father Flanagan is not in the Hall of Fame.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Have you looked that up? He is. Yeah, yeah.
- 7:01Speaker 4: He is in the Hall of Fame.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Yeah, there are many. Yeah, he's obviously well-deserving. Thank you, Liz,
- 7:08Speaker 1: for the call. I have a couple names in my head.
- 7:13Speaker 1: that I know are in there, Father Flanagan, one of them,
- 7:16Speaker 1: Willa Cather. There are many names in there who you
- 7:18Speaker 1: don't know. You just don't know. I mean, they were
- 7:23Speaker 1: obviously deserving in their field or whatever, but they're not
- 7:27Speaker 1: household names today in 2026. And Tom Osborne becoming the
- 7:33Speaker 1: first living inductee because of a legislative change that was required. Nobody,
- 7:40Speaker 1: I don't think anybody can imagine a time where people
- 7:45Speaker 1: down 35, 40, 50 years from now say, you know,
- 7:48Speaker 1: that guy wasn't very, he wasn't a very good guy.
- 7:51Speaker 1: He shouldn't have been inducted. The reason for that 35-year thing,
- 7:55Speaker 1: you had to be dead 35 years before you were eligible,
- 7:59Speaker 1: was in case some skeletons came rattling out of your
- 8:01Speaker 1: closet that we didn't know about at the time. Or
- 8:05Speaker 1: it was reconsidered about the level of your contribution to
- 8:10Speaker 1: the state. But that's not going to be the case
- 8:12Speaker 1: with Tom Osborne, and I'm I'm thrilled for him, and
- 8:15Speaker 1: I was able to see James Rose, who did the
- 8:20Speaker 1: nomination speech, and it was just beautiful. Very eloquent, as
- 8:23Speaker 1: Jim always is. Anyway, you want to weigh in on
- 8:27Speaker 1: that or anything else, the tickets? Whatever's on your mind.
- 8:30Speaker 1: This is, after all, the KFAB comment line. I heard
- 8:35Speaker 1: the discussion about Ella Langley's song, Choose in Texas. being
- 8:43Speaker 1: named now the greatest or most successful song in the
- 8:46Speaker 1: history of American music because it's been on what number
- 8:48Speaker 1: one for the longest period of time. And then the
- 8:51Speaker 1: guys got into a discussion along with Lucy about what's
- 8:53Speaker 1: the greatest song ever. All of these discussions come down
- 8:57Speaker 1: to what's your favorite. There is no greatest song of
- 9:01Speaker 1: all time unless you want to just go by statistics
- 9:04Speaker 1: like Ella Langley being number one or choosing Texas being
- 9:08Speaker 1: number one for that. By the way, I'm going to
- 9:09Speaker 1: go see her. She'll be in Lincoln, I think it's
- 9:13Speaker 1: the 30th. I wonder how good of a performer she is.
- 9:16Speaker 2: October 30th. Oh, I can imagine she's wonderful.
- 9:18Speaker 4: I can imagine she's good.
- 9:20Speaker 2: You know that song, right?
- 9:22Speaker 9: I do.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Oh, man. Yeah.
- 9:24Speaker 4: One of those that I haven't been able to escape.
- 9:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Hear it everywhere. Obviously, it's popular, but I can't escape it.
- 9:33Speaker 1: So if you want to take a shot at what
- 9:37Speaker 1: your favorite song is, look, there is no greatest anything.
- 9:41Speaker 2: All right.
- 9:42Speaker 1: There's only your favorite. Because you always have, who is
- 9:45Speaker 1: the greatest? When it comes to sports now, now you
- 9:49Speaker 1: can look at statistics. And so then it becomes a
- 9:53Speaker 1: little more objective. And if you want to say being
- 9:57Speaker 1: number one for the longest period of time is in statistics,
- 10:00Speaker 1: that's valid i guess you want to say that's the
- 10:01Speaker 1: greatest song but like scott said christmas is going to
- 10:04Speaker 1: come around and uh All I Want for Christmas is
- 10:10Speaker 1: You by Mariah Carey is probably going to retake the
- 10:14Speaker 1: number one spot because it goes to number one for
- 10:16Speaker 1: several weeks every year.
- 10:17Speaker 4: That song will feed her and her family for the
- 10:19Speaker 4: rest of time.
- 10:20Speaker 2: And why not? It is awesome. It really is. That's good.
- 10:25Speaker 1: If you want to weigh in on your favorite, my
- 10:26Speaker 1: personal favorite, I don't know. There's so many great ones.
- 10:29Speaker 4: I'm surprised no MJ songs, no Michael Jackson was talked
- 10:33Speaker 4: about today.
- 10:34Speaker 10: I don't know how well he did in the charts, but...
- 10:36Speaker 10: I can tell you what my favorite song title of
- 10:38Speaker 10: all time is. And they got to go to the
- 10:40Speaker 10: country category for that, right?
- 10:42Speaker 11: Okay.
- 10:43Speaker 1: There was a song way back in the mists, I
- 10:45Speaker 1: don't know, 50s, 60s, whatever it was, by Porter Wagner.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Speaking of Dolly Parton, they were partners. He gave her
- 10:52Speaker 2: her big break.
- 10:54Speaker 1: The song is titled, I've Enjoyed As Much Of This
- 10:59Speaker 1: As I Can Stand. Now, that's the greatest song.
- 11:04Speaker 1: All right, a couple other things that I wanted to
- 11:08Speaker 1: toss out there. We are obviously in the throes of
- 11:13Speaker 1: political ad season. And we turn the calendar over to
- 11:17Speaker 1: October here next week, and that means we're just about
- 11:20Speaker 1: down to a month before the actual election, even though
- 11:24Speaker 1: people are voting early already, which is outrageous on its
- 11:28Speaker 1: face to me. But anyway, that's the way it is.
- 11:32Speaker 1: So anyway, we're seeing all of these political ads. And
- 11:37Speaker 1: all of the politicians, most of the politicians, not all,
- 11:41Speaker 1: are about the business of casting their opponent as the
- 11:44Speaker 1: spawn of Satan. All of the political professionals that I've
- 11:49Speaker 1: ever heard say negative campaigning works. That's why it's out
- 11:56Speaker 1: there all the time. To me, there are two categories.
- 12:00Speaker 1: of negative campaigning. One's legitimate, one's disgusting. The legitimate one
- 12:05Speaker 1: is if the negative ad is, the criticism is actually legitimate.
- 12:11Speaker 1: In other words, based on what your opponent stands for
- 12:15Speaker 1: or has said or has done, and it's not personal.
- 12:19Speaker 1: That's legitimate negative campaigning. The other kind I just hate,
- 12:22Speaker 1: which is what you see all the time, They find
- 12:26Speaker 1: the least flattering picture of their opponent, number one. They
- 12:30Speaker 1: find several pictures like that. Just make them look horrible.
- 12:35Speaker 1: And then you'd think at the end of the ad
- 12:37Speaker 1: that that person is, how did that person escape being
- 12:40Speaker 1: in prison for the rest of his life or her life?
- 12:43Speaker 1: I mean, they're just like, they're just horrible. But those
- 12:46Speaker 1: are the ones often that are effective. And the one
- 12:48Speaker 1: I'm really, there's one example. I'll just put it that way.
- 12:51Speaker 1: There's several of them out there. One example is, that
- 12:57Speaker 1: bothers me this cycle is in this case, in the
- 13:01Speaker 1: race between Senator Ricketts and Dan Osborne, where they attempt,
- 13:11Speaker 1: the Ricketts campaign attempts to associate Pete Ricketts with Jeffrey Epstein. Now,
- 13:18Speaker 1: to my knowledge, there is not one atom, one scintilla,
- 13:23Speaker 1: one particle, of evidence at all anywhere that ever associated
- 13:28Speaker 1: Pete Ricketts in any way whatsoever with Jeffrey Epstein. But
- 13:32Speaker 1: the hook is, well, he's a rich guy and he's
- 13:39Speaker 1: protecting the Jeffrey Epstein class. Well, if you're not paying
- 13:42Speaker 1: close attention and you just see Ricketts up there, bad
- 13:45Speaker 1: picture of Pete Ricketts, and then you see a Jeffrey
- 13:47Speaker 1: Epstein image and you're not paying attention, that could be damaging.
- 13:53Speaker 1: And it's completely bogus. And by the way, it's not
- 13:55Speaker 1: just here. I was down in Kansas over the weekend
- 13:59Speaker 1: for a wedding. And Roger Marshall's got a battle on
- 14:03Speaker 1: his hand, the Republican senator from Kansas. And they're doing
- 14:07Speaker 1: the same thing with him. And I don't know anything
- 14:10Speaker 1: about anything related to Roger Marshall and Jeffrey Epstein. And
- 14:14Speaker 1: I don't think anybody else does either. But protecting the
- 14:18Speaker 1: Jeffrey Epstein class. Because the left is.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Obsessed with the Jeffrey Epstein files. They just are. I mean, okay.
- 14:31Speaker 1: And so now, but here's the other thing about that.
- 14:36Speaker 1: I don't know anybody who is likely to vote Democrat
- 14:46Speaker 1: who's going to vote for Pete Ricketts under any circumstances
- 14:49Speaker 1: or Roger Marshall under any circumstances. But obviously what they're
- 14:52Speaker 1: targeting There are people who are not engaged until maybe
- 14:56Speaker 1: just now they're seeing all these ads. People who actually
- 14:59Speaker 1: do vote, but they don't pay a lot of attention.
- 15:02Speaker 1: They're banking on those people who may be persuadable to
- 15:05Speaker 1: see an image of Pete Ricketts or Roger Marshall next
- 15:08Speaker 1: to a picture of Jeffrey Epstein.
- 15:10Speaker 2: To me, that's disgusting. Is it illegal?
- 15:13Speaker 1: No, because you have to look at the copy and
- 15:16Speaker 1: what the ad actually says. But the association in the imaging...
- 15:22Speaker 1: is designed to suggest to you, the voter, you know,
- 15:26Speaker 1: Pete Ricketts and Jeffrey Epstein. That's what they want you
- 15:29Speaker 1: to think. There's all kinds of examples. And here's the question.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Are you persuaded, influenced by these negative ads? You're a voter.
- 15:50Speaker 2: You're busy.
- 15:51Speaker 1: You're busy. You probably got a job and a house
- 15:54Speaker 1: and kids and a spouse. Oh, yeah, yeah. I'm going
- 15:58Speaker 1: to go vote in November. But what's this now? So
- 16:01Speaker 1: you're not paying close attention. Are you likely to be
- 16:04Speaker 1: persuaded by what you see or read or hear? Or
- 16:09Speaker 1: are you likely to do some investigating on your own
- 16:12Speaker 1: and see what might be valid and what's not? Studio
- 16:16Speaker 1: at KFAB.com. Comment line at KFAB.com. Or on the phone.
- 16:24Speaker 1: And that's 558-1110. Speaking of that, we've got Marie.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Marie, good morning.
- 16:31Speaker 13: Good morning, Gary. How are you doing?
- 16:33Speaker 2: I'm well, thank you, Marie. How are you doing?
- 16:34Speaker 8: Good.
- 16:34Speaker 13: I'm glad you are.
- 16:36Speaker 5: Okay.
- 16:36Speaker 13: I called in. There's going to be actually two things.
- 16:38Speaker 13: The first one is about the Democrats, National Socialist Party,
- 16:42Speaker 13: the DSA.
- 16:42Speaker 5: Yep.
- 16:43Speaker 13: They want a unicameral form of government in the federal level.
- 16:46Speaker 13: Eliminate the upper house.
- 16:47Speaker 6: Yes.
- 16:48Speaker 13: And go to just the Congress. And Nebraska is the
- 16:50Speaker 13: only one that has a unicameral, thanks to George Norris,
- 16:54Speaker 13: who's in the Hall of Fame. And so far for
- 16:58Speaker 13: our property tax is going down. That's a negative. It's
- 17:03Speaker 13: not going down. And that was just, people don't realize
- 17:07Speaker 13: they are serious about doing that. And we have a
- 17:11Speaker 13: one house in the federal level.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Well, they want to do away with the Senate, right?
- 17:19Speaker 13: Oh, yeah, absolutely, the upper house, yeah. And that's part
- 17:23Speaker 13: of it.
- 17:24Speaker 8: There it is.
- 17:25Speaker 13: I mean, people don't, they haven't read their platform.
- 17:28Speaker 8: I did.
- 17:29Speaker 13: And, you know, something else was mentioned on the news
- 17:31Speaker 13: just prior to you coming on, a national level about
- 17:35Speaker 13: that the Navy, the Chinese Navy is larger than ours
- 17:40Speaker 13: than it was during the Cold War. Well, everyone forgets
- 17:43Speaker 13: the Cold War was during the time that we had
- 17:45Speaker 13: an active draft. And we had a lot of people
- 17:48Speaker 13: in the military. Now we don't have that. It's a volunteer.
- 17:51Speaker 13: And we're not going to get the number of sailors
- 17:54Speaker 13: or airmen or anything else because of that. So we're
- 17:58Speaker 13: dealing with people who want to be in as opposed
- 18:01Speaker 13: to who aren't so that we can have a more
- 18:04Speaker 13: powerful Navy with half the ship.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:07Speaker 13: And that's how I see it now.
- 18:09Speaker 8: Thank you, Marie.
- 18:12Speaker 13: Okay, you have a good one.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Yeah, you too, Marie. Here's the thing. I've always been
- 18:16Speaker 1: in favor. I don't think it was bad when we
- 18:20Speaker 1: had a military draft. And I'll take it a step further.
- 18:25Speaker 1: I would be in favor of some kind of mandatory
- 18:30Speaker 1: national service. Let's call it that. If you don't want
- 18:33Speaker 1: to call it military, it doesn't have to be military service.
- 18:35Speaker 1: I would be in favor of some kind of national
- 18:39Speaker 1: service requirement. Once you hit 18.
- 18:42Speaker 4: That's similar to South Korea.
- 18:45Speaker 1: But if you want to get beat in an election,
- 18:47Speaker 1: just suggest that when you're running for office.
- 18:49Speaker 2: You know what I mean? That ain't going to happen.
- 18:52Speaker 2: I believe, isn't it in Israel? It might be in Israel, too.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Doesn't Israel have mandatory military service? They might. I think
- 19:00Speaker 2: they do.
- 19:00Speaker 4: I know South Korea does. You have to serve two years,
- 19:03Speaker 4: South Korea. And it doesn't always mean you're boots on
- 19:06Speaker 4: the ground, but you go through some training.
- 19:08Speaker 5: Right.
- 19:10Speaker 4: Things like that.
- 19:11Speaker 2: But I mean, I don't know.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Of course, I'm 250 years old, so I have a
- 19:17Speaker 1: different perspective. But how many people that I knew growing up,
- 19:23Speaker 1: men older than me, who had served? There was a draft.
- 19:31Speaker 1: There was a ton of volunteerism, too. And I think
- 19:36Speaker 1: most of the people I can think of that It
- 19:40Speaker 1: did them good. They looked back on it as, yeah,
- 19:43Speaker 1: that was horrible. But it taught me this and it
- 19:46Speaker 1: taught me that. I think some form of national. service mandatory,
- 19:53Speaker 1: with obviously there'd be some exceptions for certain individuals who were,
- 19:57Speaker 1: I don't know, not necessarily handicapped, but would have difficulty serving,
- 20:06Speaker 1: that might be possible too. But anyway, it's not going
- 20:08Speaker 1: to happen, so don't worry about it. Here's the deal.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Gene Stother is off for a week, and I've joined
- 20:15Speaker 1: a parade of fill-ins. Gary Saddlemyer here. This is the
- 20:17Speaker 1: KFAB comment line. So anything at all that's on your
- 20:21Speaker 1: mind is fair game, and it's via the phone, 558-1110,
- 20:27Speaker 1: or a couple of emails, studio at kfab.com, or comment
- 20:31Speaker 1: line at kfab.com. Chris after Clay and Buck, who's after us.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Us is me, Gary Saddlemeyer. Filling in for Gene Stothert
- 20:40Speaker 1: on the KFAB comment line here on this gloomy Thursday. Man,
- 20:44Speaker 1: if you're done building your arc yet, or if you're
- 20:47Speaker 1: not done, you might want to finish it up today.
- 20:49Speaker 1: I've never seen a September like this. More rain coming
- 20:52Speaker 1: now for, I guess, today through Saturday. Peyton Highlock here
- 20:56Speaker 1: every day with Gene and our podcast. Cavalcade of fill-ins
- 21:00Speaker 1: on the KFAB comment line. You got a couple emails.
- 21:02Speaker 2: There, Peyton?
- 21:03Speaker 4: I do have a couple emails here, Gary. This first
- 21:05Speaker 4: one comes from Bob, comment at kfab.com. Going back to
- 21:10Speaker 4: the Hall of Fame discussion that we started the show with,
- 21:12Speaker 4: if they can do it for Tom Osborne, then they
- 21:15Speaker 4: can do it for Warren Buffett and Johnny Carson by
- 21:18Speaker 4: putting them in the Nebraska Hall of Fame immediately. Well,
- 21:22Speaker 4: I think that's open.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Now right after the after the.
- 21:27Speaker 10: Legislature has changed a little bit yeah yes i'll let
- 21:30Speaker 10: jim rose if he's listening way in on the specifics
- 21:33Speaker 10: but my understanding is that uh uh the.
- 21:37Speaker 1: 35 year you got to be dead requirement is gone
- 21:39Speaker 1: i don't know if there's any requirement now other than
- 21:42Speaker 1: whatever the commission votes for but they're going to be
- 21:44Speaker 1: very selective you would think warren buffett you know i
- 21:48Speaker 1: mean come on is anybody going to argue that warren
- 21:51Speaker 1: buffett is not going to be at some point in
- 21:55Speaker 1: the Nebraska Hall of Fame. Johnny Carson, I don't know. Well,
- 22:00Speaker 1: I'll let the commission worry about that. We've got a
- 22:02Speaker 1: lot of calls, and it is the comment line, so
- 22:04Speaker 1: let's get to as many as we can. Karen, you're
- 22:07Speaker 1: on 1110 KFAB.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Good morning.
- 22:10Speaker 8: Good morning. I am 75 years old, so I'm older
- 22:15Speaker 8: than you are, Gary.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Thank you. I don't hear that that much anymore.
- 22:20Speaker 8: Yeah. Anyway, um, I have been a Republican all my life,
- 22:27Speaker 8: and for the first time, I am not planning on
- 22:33Speaker 8: voting for a Republican for governor because we have a
- 22:43Speaker 8: son with a significant developmental disability and The policy with
- 22:56Speaker 8: inter-RAI to evaluate people, adults primarily, I think, with developmental
- 23:07Speaker 8: disabilities is just, I think it's wrong.
- 23:12Speaker 1: The policy, I'm not following. You're not going to vote
- 23:18Speaker 1: for Pellin. I understand your issue, but I don't understand
- 23:22Speaker 1: the policy of what?
- 23:24Speaker 8: Okay, of evaluating the funding that these individuals are getting
- 23:35Speaker 8: at this point. We have friends or acquaintances here in Fremont.
- 23:47Speaker 8: The people that are keeping their adult children at home
- 23:58Speaker 8: because they really can't get the kind of care that
- 24:03Speaker 8: they need.
- 24:06Speaker 1: And before they could, you're saying, and you're not voting
- 24:10Speaker 1: for Jim Pillen. Let me ask you quickly, Cameron, I've
- 24:13Speaker 1: got to run, but let me ask you quickly, who
- 24:14Speaker 1: are you going to vote for?
- 24:17Speaker 8: I am voting for Lynn Walsh.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Okay, appreciate the call.
- 24:21Speaker 4: We have on line six, Rosie, talking about some of
- 24:24Speaker 4: the Hall of Fame conversation that we were just in.
- 24:27Speaker 2: James?
- 24:29Speaker 3: Yes, I was called out, and I'm here to serve.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Yeah, what is it that the legislature made a move
- 24:36Speaker 1: that allowed for Tom Osborne to be selected? Did they
- 24:41Speaker 1: completely do away with the death requirements?
- 24:44Speaker 3: Yes, the mortality clause is gone now. You're right, it
- 24:48Speaker 3: was 35 years, and now it's gone. That doesn't mean
- 24:52Speaker 3: that only live people get in now. It just means
- 24:55Speaker 3: that you don't have to wait 35 years. But every
- 24:59Speaker 3: candidate will be evaluated based on the merits. And by
- 25:01Speaker 3: the way, nominations are open. We'll select the next recipient
- 25:07Speaker 3: in December.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Yeah, you're on the commission.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Yeah, and if you've got somebody that you think deserves,
- 25:13Speaker 3: then you need to go on the Nebraska History website,
- 25:16Speaker 3: and there's an easy link, and you can put in
- 25:20Speaker 3: whomever you believe truly deserves it. But I can tell
- 25:23Speaker 3: you that even though there is no longer a mortality clause,
- 25:27Speaker 3: that doesn't mean that somebody who's gone won't get back
- 25:32Speaker 3: in or won't get in. I think we know who
- 25:35Speaker 3: some of those people are. led by Johnny Carson.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Warren Buffett. Isn't there a clause in there about no
- 25:43Speaker 2: entertainers and no athletes?
- 25:45Speaker 5: It wasn't a clause, Gary, but I'm glad you brought
- 25:47Speaker 5: that up.
- 25:48Speaker 3: It was a secondary consideration. The entertainers and athletes were
- 25:53Speaker 3: not given primary consideration largely because in the past it
- 25:58Speaker 3: has been considered that, well, do you have more than
- 26:01Speaker 3: just that as part of your resume? And the answer is, well...
- 26:05Speaker 3: I think Johnny Carson, even though he only had one
- 26:08Speaker 3: job for 32 years, probably had as much impact as
- 26:12Speaker 3: any Nebraskan in media ever. And, of course, Buffett. And,
- 26:18Speaker 3: of course, Buffett, you know, he's truly one of the
- 26:22Speaker 3: great Nebraskans of all time. And so I'm certain that
- 26:24Speaker 3: he'll get strong consideration. Somebody will nominate him. But, yeah,
- 26:27Speaker 3: the mortality clause is gone now, and that will open
- 26:32Speaker 3: up opportunities for others.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Very good.
- 26:34Speaker 1: James, thank you. Always good to chat with Rosie. Back
- 26:39Speaker 1: to the Lions here, and Kevin, you're on NewsRadio 1110 KFAB.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Good morning.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Gary, first let me say it is very, very good
- 26:48Speaker 3: to hear your voice once again.
- 26:49Speaker 14: Thank you, sir.
- 26:50Speaker 2: Thank you very much.
- 26:50Speaker 3: I haven't missed you in the morning.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 26:53Speaker 3: I have a possible connection between Ricketts and Epstein.
- 26:56Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 26:56Speaker 2: Ricketts got $ 373, 000.
- 26:57Speaker 9: From the Israeli lobby, and.
- 27:03Speaker 3: I have reason to believe that Epstein worked for them. So,
- 27:07Speaker 3: I mean, maybe that's why.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Well, maybe that's a little bit of a stretch for me, Kevin,
- 27:16Speaker 1: but okay. I mean, it's almost like six degrees of
- 27:20Speaker 1: Kevin Bacon in a way, or is it seven degrees? Anyway,
- 27:26Speaker 1: you wanted to mention mandatory service, too.
- 27:31Speaker 12: No, that was all I had was just that connection.
- 27:34Speaker 2: All right, Kevin, thanks. Appreciate it, man. Bill, you're on
- 27:37Speaker 2: 1110 KVB. Good morning.
- 27:40Speaker 6: Good morning, sir. I love to go to the College
- 27:42Speaker 6: World Series, and I'd love to buy a baseball that
- 27:45Speaker 6: I can give to my grandchildren or children. But when
- 27:50Speaker 6: I go to the concession, all the baseballs are made
- 27:54Speaker 6: in China.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 27:57Speaker 6: And America's sport, baseball.
- 28:00Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 28:01Speaker 6: We should be able to buy an American-made baseball at
- 28:06Speaker 6: the College World Series. Now, or at least given a choice,
- 28:10Speaker 6: you could buy a Chinese baseball or an American-made baseball.
- 28:13Speaker 6: But I'd rather it was made in Cincinnati or New
- 28:18Speaker 6: York or Tennessee or even California.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt, Bill. Thank you. I wonder, I haven't
- 28:26Speaker 2: looked it up, I wonder if MLB uses.
- 28:31Speaker 4: Well, I'm a step ahead of you, Gary. They are
- 28:33Speaker 4: made in Costa Rica, Rawlings Factory in Costa Rica. Well,
- 28:38Speaker 4: that's closer anyway. Better than China, I suppose.
- 28:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Hey, Travis, you're on KBB. Good morning.
- 28:46Speaker 11: Good morning. This is Travis, the Hitman, and it's great
- 28:49Speaker 11: to hear.
- 28:49Speaker 5: You, Gary.
- 28:50Speaker 11: I appreciate you being here.
- 28:52Speaker 2: The Hitman.
- 28:53Speaker 11: Okay, thank you. That was a name Scott Voorhees gave
- 28:57Speaker 11: me one time when I called in in the evening,
- 29:01Speaker 11: and it was probably over a year.
- 29:03Speaker 5: Ago or more now.
- 29:04Speaker 2: So what's on your mind?
- 29:06Speaker 11: Well, you talked about the mandatory service, and I served
- 29:10Speaker 11: in the Marine Corps, and I served with other militaries
- 29:13Speaker 11: in the Marine Corps, one being the Vermunen military from Bermuda.
- 29:18Speaker 11: And they have mandatory service. And let me just tell you,
- 29:21Speaker 11: it was not good when you get a whole bunch
- 29:23Speaker 11: of guys in the military that don't want to be there.
- 29:27Speaker 11: But your co-part there is correct about the Israeli military meeting. Yeah,
- 29:34Speaker 11: Rosie looked.
- 29:34Speaker 2: It up, too. It's six years. Six years in Israel.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Mandatory military service.
- 29:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Do you think about not necessarily military service, but national
- 29:44Speaker 1: service of some kind? So you've got two years. You're
- 29:48Speaker 1: going to do something that contributes to this country.
- 29:53Speaker 11: I mean, I think that might be an okay idea.
- 29:55Speaker 11: I also worked for the federal government as a technician,
- 29:59Speaker 11: and some federal service wouldn't be bad. Just would have
- 30:03Speaker 11: to find the right fit for people. And getting all
- 30:06Speaker 11: that to work together with the government is very hard
- 30:09Speaker 11: to do because the government's not very.
- 30:10Speaker 3: Efficient at almost anything.
- 30:12Speaker 2: True.
- 30:14Speaker 11: So you're stretching a lot for the government.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:18Speaker 4: But, yes, I do.
- 30:19Speaker 11: I do appreciate you being on the radio.
- 30:21Speaker 2: I appreciate that, Travis. Thanks. I love doing it. I
- 30:23Speaker 2: think that it would be.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Likely that we could, if this ever came to be,
- 30:29Speaker 1: that we could probably find some useful things for people
- 30:34Speaker 1: to do for two years that would be a benefit
- 30:37Speaker 1: instead of a cost to the government.
- 30:41Speaker 4: You could totally think that, and that might also increase
- 30:44Speaker 4: your sense of national pride.
- 30:46Speaker 2: That's what I'm getting at.
- 30:48Speaker 4: And though I wasn't alive for 9-11, it's very clear
- 30:52Speaker 4: that the amount of people that then volunteered to go
- 30:55Speaker 4: serve as a response to 9-11, I think that that
- 30:59Speaker 4: is something that could potentially happen again.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Similar, I think, to what we saw after the attack
- 31:06Speaker 1: on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Very similar thing, yeah. So, okay.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Thank you, Travis, for that call. Let's go to Jeff.
- 31:14Speaker 1: You're on 1110 KVB on the comment line.
- 31:16Speaker 8: Hi.
- 31:17Speaker 9: Hey, Gary.
- 31:18Speaker 5: I can solve the fuel problem very simple.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Excellent.
- 31:22Speaker 5: Call in the National Production Act. All oil that's pumped
- 31:27Speaker 5: out of the ground in the United States has to
- 31:30Speaker 5: go to diesel production, not to be sold overseas until
- 31:35Speaker 5: the price reflects the cost of $ 3 for diesel, $ 2.
- 31:37Speaker 9: 25 for gas.
- 31:41Speaker 5: Hmm.
- 31:43Speaker 1: That would be disruptive, I suppose, the experts would say
- 31:46Speaker 1: to the global market. But I'll tell you one thing
- 31:50Speaker 1: you hit on that I just got to mention in passing.
- 31:53Speaker 1: This diesel. You talk about inflation. It's not just the
- 31:57Speaker 1: truckers and the farmers paying for the diesel. It's all
- 32:01Speaker 1: of the products that are brought on trucks and all
- 32:04Speaker 1: of the produce, all of the goods that are produced
- 32:07Speaker 1: by farmers. And those costs are going to be, you know.
- 32:12Speaker 1: I'll tell you what, the cost of diesel is 630 now.
- 32:19Speaker 1: What is it normally, Jeff, do you know?
- 32:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I do all of our pickups run on diesel.
- 32:25Speaker 5: So right now we can fill up for six bucks.
- 32:28Speaker 5: Generally it runs about 350.
- 32:31Speaker 1: Wow.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Thanks, man.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Appreciate the call. At 1046, and since it is the
- 32:37Speaker 1: KFAB comment line, whatever's on your mind, feel free. Gene
- 32:41Speaker 1: will be back Monday. Peyton Highlock's here with me. How's
- 32:44Speaker 1: the email looking, or should we go to calls?
- 32:46Speaker 4: The calls are the direction we should head.
- 32:47Speaker 1: All right, man. Go to Rob. You're on 1110 KFAB
- 32:51Speaker 1: in the comment line.
- 32:51Speaker 2: Good morning.
- 32:53Speaker 14: Morning.
- 32:54Speaker 2: Hey, Hall of Fame listener Rob.
- 32:56Speaker 9: Yes, sir.
- 32:57Speaker 14: You know, I went to the Air Force voluntarily, but
- 32:59Speaker 14: I will tell you, and military is better off being
- 33:03Speaker 14: all volunteer. You don't want people who don't want to
- 33:05Speaker 14: be there. But, you know, when there was a draft,
- 33:08Speaker 14: there was certainly a, You know, it provided for a
- 33:12Speaker 14: homogenized society. People from all walks of life could look back, yeah,
- 33:15Speaker 14: when I was in the Army, I did this.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Oh, exactly.
- 33:19Speaker 1: I've heard this over and over, that you all become
- 33:22Speaker 1: very quickly accustomed at boot camp or basic training to
- 33:27Speaker 1: the idea that there's nothing special about you. There's nothing
- 33:30Speaker 1: different about you. You get your butt up when I
- 33:32Speaker 1: tell you to, and we're going to do this, and
- 33:33Speaker 1: we're going to do that, and you're all together. And
- 33:35Speaker 1: that that lesson was not only an eye-opener, but served
- 33:39Speaker 1: them well Rob, thank you for the call. I appreciate it.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Onward to Max. You're on 1110 KFAB on the comment line.
- 33:47Speaker 2: Max, hi.
- 33:48Speaker 11: How you doing?
- 33:49Speaker 2: Yeah, excellent. Thank you.
- 33:52Speaker 12: Yeah, I just....
- 33:55Speaker 5: Are you still there?
- 33:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm right here. Max, what's up?
- 33:58Speaker 12: Okay, I just wanted to let Gary know that I've
- 34:02Speaker 12: been a long-time listener to KFAB.
- 34:05Speaker 3: Appreciate that.
- 34:06Speaker 12: And I just wanted to Let him know that he
- 34:09Speaker 12: was one of the best. I can remember when Bremser
- 34:13Speaker 12: and Jack Payne and all them guys were on the radio.
- 34:17Speaker 12: But you've got to put Gary up there right on top.
- 34:20Speaker 2: Very kind of you.
- 34:21Speaker 5: He's the best.
- 34:22Speaker 12: And I miss the guy to pieces.
- 34:24Speaker 5: Because— Well, I'm right here.
- 34:26Speaker 2: I'm right here, Max.
- 34:29Speaker 7: Oh, you're there, Gary.
- 34:30Speaker 2: Yeah, that's me.
- 34:31Speaker 12: I was wondering where you were. I just wanted to
- 34:33Speaker 12: let you know that I met you about 30 years
- 34:36Speaker 12: ago at Olive Garden. And I just wanted to let
- 34:40Speaker 12: you know that I've listened to you for ever since
- 34:44Speaker 12: you've been on.
- 34:45Speaker 3: Very good.
- 34:45Speaker 12: And I just wish you was on there more often.
- 34:48Speaker 1: I appreciate that, Max. Thanks. I'm happy to fill in.
- 34:52Speaker 1: I love it when Scott goes away.
- 34:54Speaker 4: Yeah, I love when Gary's on the show, KFAB, filling in.
- 34:57Speaker 4: That Gary guy, he's a good guy.
- 34:59Speaker 2: I'm right here. All right.
- 35:02Speaker 1: I think we have Dave here. Dave, you're on the
- 35:07Speaker 1: KFAB comment line.
- 35:08Speaker 2: Good morning.
- 35:09Speaker 9: Yeah, good morning, Gary.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 35:11Speaker 9: You know, I was in the Army once, too, and
- 35:15Speaker 9: that's not what I called.
- 35:16Speaker 5: To talk about.
- 35:18Speaker 9: But a guy I went to basic training for, we're
- 35:20Speaker 9: still good friends, and we still tailgate every home game. So, anyway,
- 35:24Speaker 9: just long-lasting friends. I didn't know him from Adam before
- 35:27Speaker 9: we met then. But, anyway, on the ticket thing, this
- 35:32Speaker 9: is sad. I think we all knew this was– Oh, sure.
- 35:35Speaker 3: I knew it was coming.
- 35:36Speaker 2: I knew it was coming.
- 35:37Speaker 8: Mm-hmm.
- 35:38Speaker 9: You know, my wife and I belong to the Beef
- 35:42Speaker 9: Club way back in the day up in the Northwest Stadium,
- 35:46Speaker 9: and our donation hasn't been really raised. I wish they'd
- 35:50Speaker 9: have just kept raising it through the years so we're
- 35:53Speaker 9: not going to get shell-shocked by this.
- 35:58Speaker 1: There was the Beef Club and the Wheel Club and
- 36:00Speaker 1: the Touchdown Club and all these booster clubs.
- 36:03Speaker 2: Now it's the Money Club. I think they just put
- 36:05Speaker 2: it all under one umbrella. Troy.
- 36:08Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 36:09Speaker 1: And by the way, he's unapologetic about all of this.
- 36:12Speaker 1: I remember when he said regarding, uh, the hosing that
- 36:15Speaker 1: the long time volleyball, there were people that were there
- 36:18Speaker 1: when there were, when we weren't, but when volleyball wasn't
- 36:21Speaker 1: on anybody's map and they've been same with softball and
- 36:25Speaker 1: they've been there, you know, through it all. And, uh, but,
- 36:30Speaker 1: but Dan and says, yeah, we should have been doing
- 36:31Speaker 1: this all along. This is, it's overdue, but, It's the
- 36:35Speaker 1: world we're in, David. Thanks for the call, man. Appreciate it. Mike,
- 36:38Speaker 1: you're on the KOV comment line.
- 36:40Speaker 3: Good morning.
- 36:41Speaker 12: Hey, just to piggyback off that last call, what happened
- 36:45Speaker 12: to this? I mean, hypothetically, could it go bust? You
- 36:49Speaker 12: get maybe 50% of the people saying, yeah, I'll pony up,
- 36:51Speaker 12: and everybody else says no?
- 36:53Speaker 2: Well, that won't happen. And I don't want to.
- 36:57Speaker 1: I'm just saying everybody's got their own decision to make.
- 37:00Speaker 1: But here's the key.
- 37:02Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 37:05Speaker 1: Tony Petitti, when he became the Big Ten commissioner, came
- 37:07Speaker 1: to town and he spoke to the big suits at
- 37:10Speaker 1: the university. And he says, if you want to be
- 37:17Speaker 1: in the American Association of Universities, which there's always pushback
- 37:20Speaker 1: against that for Nebraska, you need three things.
- 37:25Speaker 2: You need to win in football. You need to have
- 37:30Speaker 2: a lot of TV sets.
- 37:35Speaker 1: And I can't remember the third thing, but the point
- 37:37Speaker 1: is that two of those things we can control. The
- 37:40Speaker 1: number of eyeballs and TV sets you can't, but you
- 37:43Speaker 1: can control winning. No, he was talking about, I'm sorry,
- 37:47Speaker 1: he was talking about the Big Ten Conference. You want
- 37:49Speaker 1: to remain in the Big Ten Conference, you need to
- 37:51Speaker 1: have a lot of TV sets, you need to win
- 37:54Speaker 1: in football, and you need to be in the AAU.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Well, Dr.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Gold has tried hard to get Nebraska in the AAU,
- 38:01Speaker 1: and there's pushback against that.
- 38:03Speaker 2: The football.
- 38:05Speaker 1: winning part may be coming along. We don't know, but
- 38:07Speaker 1: we can't do anything about the number of TV sets.
- 38:10Speaker 2: So all of this money.
- 38:13Speaker 1: And I just say that there's a long way around
- 38:15Speaker 1: to say winning on the field is the thing, not
- 38:20Speaker 1: the only thing, but it's the, almost the only thing.
- 38:23Speaker 1: And if this program continues to struggle, if we go
- 38:28Speaker 1: five and one or five and oh, and end up
- 38:30Speaker 1: six and six again, This is not going to be
- 38:34Speaker 1: a very good look for all of the receding policies
- 38:39Speaker 1: that they're putting in place.
- 38:42Speaker 2: Anyway. Boy, this goes fast, Peyton.
- 38:44Speaker 4: Real quick.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Man, this goes fast.
- 38:46Speaker 4: Real quick.
- 38:49Speaker 2: Thanks for your assist there, big guy.
- 38:52Speaker 1: It's always good to be on NewsRadio 11 and KFAB.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Gene will be back Monday.
- 38:57Speaker 4: That is correct.
- 38:58Speaker 1: And Chip Maxwell will be in here tomorrow on the
- 39:01Speaker 1: KFAB comment line. One email, quickly, if I can put
- 39:10Speaker 1: my hand on it. Yeah, two years mandatory military service
- 39:13Speaker 1: for women and four years mandatory military service for men.
- 39:16Speaker 2: This in Israel is from Rob.
- 39:18Speaker 1: I went to the Air Force in an all-volunteer setting,
- 39:22Speaker 1: and a volunteer military is what you want, but the
- 39:24Speaker 1: draft definitely has some advantages. Lots of topics that we
- 39:29Speaker 1: couldn't get to. The hour goes fast. I do appreciate
- 39:34Speaker 1: you being with us.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Take a break.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Fox and KFAB Radio News and Clay and Buck. Coming
- 39:39Speaker 1: right up.
- 39:40Speaker 2: It's 10.58.
