- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it's Wednesday, the middle
- 0:15of the week. It is June 18th.
- 0:18So glad to have your company today.
- 0:20And I discovered this random little bit of a history that
- 0:23happened on this very day in 1178.
- 0:26That's a long time ago. These 5 Canterbury monks were
- 0:29chilling outside looking up at the the night sky when they saw
- 0:34this spectacular event happening on the surface of the moon.
- 0:37They said it was like a flaming torch spewing fire and sparks,
- 0:41making the moon and I quote, throb like a wounded snake.
- 0:46How does a wounded snake throb, I wonder?
- 0:49But anyway, they saw this incredibly spectacular event
- 0:53that is now believed to have been this enormous collision
- 0:57happening on the face of the moon forming the Giordano Bruno
- 1:01crater. Incredible.
- 1:03What what a thing that would have been to see.
- 1:05And friends, let's hope we don't have a similar event anywhere
- 1:08near us tonight, because that sounds quite bad for the roof
- 1:12integrity of our homes. But today we are going to
- 1:15continue reading about another clash between heaven and earth
- 1:20as Moses wraps up his exposition of that very first commandment,
- 1:25as he describes what will happen if in fact, they do continue to
- 1:29live following God's commandments.
- 1:31So let's read it together. Deuteronomy Chapter 11.
- 1:45You must love the Lord your God and always obey His
- 1:48requirements, decrees, regulations, and commands.
- 1:53Keep in mind that I'm not talking now to your children who
- 1:56have never experienced the discipline of the Lord your God
- 1:59or seen His greatness and His strong hand and powerful arm.
- 2:04They didn't see the miraculous signs and wonders He performed
- 2:07in Egypt against Pharaoh and all his land.
- 2:11They didn't see what the Lord did to the armies of Egypt and
- 2:14to their horses and Chariots, how He drowned them in the Red
- 2:17Sea. As they were chasing you, He
- 2:20destroyed them, and they have not recovered to this very day.
- 2:25Your children didn't see how the Lord cared for you in the
- 2:27wilderness until you arrived here.
- 2:30They didn't see what He did to Dathan and to Byram, the sons of
- 2:34Elia, the descendant of Reuben, when the earth opened its mouth
- 2:38in the Israelite camp and swallowed them along with their
- 2:42households and tents and every living thing that belonged to
- 2:45them. But you have seen the Lord
- 2:49perform all these mighty deeds with your own eyes.
- 2:54Therefore, be careful to obey every command I'm giving you
- 2:58today so you may have strength to go in and take over the land
- 3:03you are about to enter. If you obey, you will enjoy a
- 3:08long life in the land the Lord swore to give to your ancestors
- 3:12and to you their descendants, a land flowing with milk and
- 3:16honey. For the land you are about to
- 3:19enter and take over is not like the land of Egypt from which you
- 3:22came, where you planted your seed and made irrigation ditches
- 3:26with your foot, as in a vegetable garden.
- 3:30Rather, the land you will soon take over is a land of hills and
- 3:34valleys with plenty of rain, a land that the Lord your God
- 3:38cares for. He watches over it through each
- 3:41season of the year if you carefully obey the commands I'm
- 3:45giving you today. If you love the Lord your God
- 3:49and serve Him with all your heart and soul, then He will
- 3:53send the rains in their proper seasons, the early and late
- 3:57rains, so you can bring in your harvests of grain, new wine, and
- 4:02olive oil. He will give you lush pasture
- 4:06land for your livestock, and you yourselves will have all you
- 4:10want to eat. But be careful.
- 4:13Don't let your heart be deceived so that you turn away from the
- 4:16Lord and serve and worship other gods.
- 4:19If you do, the Lord's anger will burn against you.
- 4:23He will shut up the sky and hold back the rain, and the ground
- 4:28will fail to produce its harvests.
- 4:30Then you will quickly die in that good land the Lord is
- 4:34giving you. So commit yourselves
- 4:36wholeheartedly to these words of mind.
- 4:39Tie them in your hands and wear them on your forehead as
- 4:42reminders. Teach them to your children.
- 4:46Talk about them when you're at home and when you're on the
- 4:48road. When you were going to bed and
- 4:50when you were getting up. Write them on the door posts of
- 4:54your house and on your gates, so that as long as the sky remains
- 4:59above the earth, you and your children may flourish in the
- 5:04land the Lord swore to give your ancestors.
- 5:07Be careful to obey all these commands I'm giving you.
- 5:11Show love to the Lord your God by walking in His ways and
- 5:16holding tightly to Him. Then the Lord will drive out all
- 5:20the nations ahead of you, though they are much greater and
- 5:24stronger than you, and you will take over their land.
- 5:28Wherever you set foot, that land will be yours.
- 5:31Your frontiers will stretch from wilderness in the South to
- 5:35Lebanon in the north, and from the Euphrates River in the east
- 5:40to the Mediterranean Sea in the West.
- 5:43No one will be able to stand against you, for the Lord your
- 5:47God will cause the people to fear and dread you as He
- 5:51promised. Wherever you go in the whole
- 5:53land, look to day. I am giving you the choice
- 5:58between a blessing and a curse. You will be blessed if you obey
- 6:02the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you to day,
- 6:06but you will be cursed if you reject the commands of the Lord
- 6:09your God and turn away from Him and worship gods you have not
- 6:14known before. When the Lord your God brings
- 6:18you into the land and helps you take possession of it, you must
- 6:21pronounce the blessing at Mount Gerizim and the curse at Mount
- 6:26Ebal. These two mountains are West of
- 6:29the Jordan River in the land of the Canaanites who live in the
- 6:32Jordan Valley near the town of Gilgal, not far from the oaks of
- 6:37Mora. For you are about to cross the
- 6:40Jordan River to take over the land the Lord your God is giving
- 6:43you. When you take that land and are
- 6:46living in it, you must be careful to obey all the decrees
- 6:50and regulations I'm giving you today.
- 7:02Here we have it, Lord, you layout in front of us the path
- 7:06to success and the path to ruin. The path to success looks like
- 7:13loving you and following you. It looks like opening our arms
- 7:17and saying yes, thank you for the gift that you give us.
- 7:21I accept it and I'll live in gratitude to you for all that
- 7:25you have done for me. And of course, that path of
- 7:30curse looks like us trying to do this on our own, turning our
- 7:35back on you and under our own strength and the strength of
- 7:38these other mortal things around us, trying to get it done
- 7:43without acknowledging you. Ah, when it's in black and white
- 7:47like this, Lord, it seems so clear and so obvious.
- 7:50But the nuances of our lives can make this seem much more
- 7:54complicated. Lord Jesus, bring us your
- 7:57clarity so that we can always place you at the centre of our
- 8:02life, that we can always worship you above all others and that we
- 8:07can always look to you as our provider.
- 8:11Thank you for being our loving, providing God who has given us
- 8:17Jesus to save us. And so we thank you for all that
- 8:21you do for us and once again recommit ourselves to you.
- 8:28And we pray all of this in your wonderful saving name, Jesus,
- 8:32Amen.
