- 0:00So we are going to discuss a topic today that's really been a common theme in my office and
- 0:10just kind of around friends and I feel like it really needed to be something said about
- 0:18it.
- 0:19And so as we walk into this episode, we just want to thank you so much for tuning in and
- 0:24helping fostering faith grow.
- 0:27And we know that there are several tens of thousands, you know, soon to be hundreds of
- 0:33thousands listening on YouTube and Spotify and Apple.
- 0:36And we really just like for you guys to rate, review, leave some comments, help us grow.
- 0:43If you find that this podcast is helping you in any way, make sure that you share it with
- 0:48somebody and that way we can get this word out and just be disciples because it's about
- 0:53being fishers of men and not watchers of the aquarium.
- 0:57And so as we dive deep into this topic, I want it to be something that makes you maybe
- 1:05uncomfortable and allows you to really think about what's going on in your life.
- 1:12I'm an Ezekiel and so I'm just really kind of full of like boldness and just really just
- 1:22not trying to just make people feel comfortable with how we live.
- 1:29So as we dive into this podcast, I'm going to call it Roots, getting to know the root
- 1:36of what you're doing, why you're doing it.
- 1:39And have you ever felt anxious?
- 1:40Have you ever felt nervous, depressed?
- 1:43Have you ever felt distant from God?
- 1:45And I know that we've done episodes on that before, but maybe you've been praying and
- 1:50you don't feel like he's answering.
- 1:52What if I told you that the disease, the disease, whether emotional, physical, spiritual, are
- 2:00often a sign that God actually is paying attention to you?
- 2:05In this episode of Fostering Faith, we're going to dive deep into uncovering the root
- 2:09causes of anxiety and emotional unrest in spiritual cases.
- 2:16And so with this real talk and plenty of scripture, we'll tackle why anxiety and depression often
- 2:24stem from feeling disconnected from God, how to stop treating symptoms to get to the root
- 2:30of what's really going on, how God uses us to help others, and how God uses that unease
- 2:39to draw you closer and not push you away.
- 2:43We'll give you some practical tips of how to reset your heart, your mind, and include
- 2:48scripture, prayer, and faith-based habits to include in your everyday life.
- 2:53So if you've ever been wondering, where is God in all of this?
- 2:58This episode's for you.
- 3:01And so we have had so much fun doing this podcast, and every one of those days where
- 3:08you kind of feel off, but yet you don't know why.
- 3:13And the difference between disease and dis-ease, when your body, mind, and soul are telling
- 3:21you something is wrong, but you can't find anything.
- 3:25And so we have scripture, and so we have Matthew 11, 28 through 30, and it says, Come to me,
- 3:32all that you are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
- 3:37And so as we are trying to carry all the things, as moms are trying to carry the husband and
- 3:44the work and our kids, social media and carrying everything, and God is saying, Why?
- 3:55Why are you out here carrying all of this?
- 3:59My yoke is light.
- 4:00I am stronger than you.
- 4:01Why are you stressing out over all this stuff?
- 4:04Give it to me.
- 4:05Give me your worry.
- 4:09And for kids, they are so stressed out about trying to be perfect and Instagram ready and
- 4:16allowing their faults and their failures just to be like it was in the 90s, and we don't
- 4:23have to be perfect, and we don't have to have all the things.
- 4:27But the kids and the youth nowadays, they struggle with so much more than I could have
- 4:31ever imagined.
- 4:32And, you know, I can't speak for husbands because one, I'm not one, but I can just speak
- 4:37for my husband that he carries the burden of this household taking care of aging parents,
- 4:44you know, his job, like all the things.
- 4:48And so his major thing is trying to, you know, balance life and not bring it home.
- 4:57And it really is.
- 4:59And so why are we carrying all this stuff as society?
- 5:02Why are we just trying to, you know, have a juggling act of trying to keep everything
- 5:07and God is saying, come to me.
- 5:10I know you're tired.
- 5:12I hear you.
- 5:13I'm watching you.
- 5:14I'm listening to you.
- 5:16Give me, give me that.
- 5:17Give me, give me the taxing, you know, give me the basketball practice.
- 5:21Give me, let me, let me do the groceries.
- 5:24And you're like, yeah, that's, that's fine.
- 5:25That's, that's great, Tracy, because he's not going to get groceries for me.
- 5:29No, but maybe if you gave it to him, maybe groceries would show up at your door.
- 5:34Maybe he would give you a friend that would be like, Hey, I'm going to run to Walmart.
- 5:37Do you need anything?
- 5:39Or maybe he'll give you a carpool and say, you know what?
- 5:43These are the parents that are involved in your kids sports and they reach out to you.
- 5:49You never know until we try.
- 5:51And so what happens if you are just so full of anxiety and the root of anxiety isn't always
- 5:59just physical.
- 6:01It can be spiritual.
- 6:02And so you can do labs and you can do scans and you can do all the things, but there's
- 6:08no spiritual lab that I can draw in the office.
- 6:11There's no alpha.
- 6:12There's no omega.
- 6:16First field trial, the check there is not that.
- 6:18And if there is, I mean, leave that in the comments because I don't know about it.
- 6:23Whenever you feel far from God, it doesn't mean that he's far from you because he's always
- 6:27at our right hand and we're probably too busy looking to the left to notice that he's even
- 6:33there.
- 6:34And so whenever we dive deep into the feelings of anxiety and depression, and a lot of times
- 6:44it roots to a feeling of unease or disease.
- 6:50And once we really kind of dive into it, for those that believe, we usually end up finding
- 6:59sin.
- 7:02We usually feel that the Holy Spirit is the one that's making us feel uneasy.
- 7:09And so we have Psalm 34, 18, it says, the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves
- 7:14those who are crushed in spirit.
- 7:16God alone is the one that we can turn to no matter what.
- 7:23God allows discomfort because he wants us to seek him and not just quick fixes.
- 7:29And so quick fixes are just anything that you're turning to to bring you comfort, anything
- 7:34that you're putting before him, whether it be drugs, alcohol, sex, video games, pornography,
- 7:42whatever it may be, if you're trying to fill that God-sized void with anything that's not
- 7:50him, it's not going to be the fix.
- 7:53It's not going to help you.
- 7:55And really walking through that has really just been so eye-opening for people and patients
- 8:04and allowing them to like, oh, and so we walk through the conversation.
- 8:11Okay, so we go through all the things, we go through all the blood, we go through, you
- 8:15know, anything, you know, in their diet and physical and like all the things.
- 8:20And then we really get down to, okay, so you're a believer of Christ, you're a believer of
- 8:25Jesus, you follow him, like you are a Christian, like you believe in God and he sent his son
- 8:35and all the things and they're, you know, yes, yes, yes, okay.
- 8:38So then what are you doing that is outside your scope that you know that you're not supposed
- 8:42to be doing?
- 8:44And they're like, I drink.
- 8:50I am, you know, I'm having sex outside of marriage.
- 8:57And so we walk through that and it's like, okay, so why are we doing that?
- 9:03Because I feel alone.
- 9:05Because I feel like no one is listening, no one's paying attention and they're doing it
- 9:10to numb the pain, to look at it in hopes that, oh, I just broke up with a boyfriend and so
- 9:17that's going to bring it back.
- 9:19You're lying to yourself.
- 9:21And so really looking at what you're doing and how is that going to fix the problem in
- 9:29that, really in that situation.
- 9:32And so whenever, also too, whenever you give your burdens to Christ, he could have a friend
- 9:37on that end to help you and to guide you through these tough times.
- 9:44And he allows these things to happen to us.
- 9:47And I was reading in my book Bible the other morning, Hitcharles Stanley Life Principle,
- 9:53and it was he allows everything that happens to us goes through his fingers and we have
- 9:59to believe that.
- 10:00And so either it's going to make us draw closer or you choose to walk away.
- 10:05And so in those hard times, he's like, oh my gosh, I'm so here for you.
- 10:08Like, I love you.
- 10:09Like, here I am.
- 10:12And we tend to treat anxiety and sadness like it's a superficial problem, but it's so much
- 10:17deeper.
- 10:18And so, you know, roots in spiritual disease is lack of time in his presence, unresolved
- 10:25sin and guilt, lies the enemy has told you about your worth, and then lack of trust and
- 10:32rest in his promises.
- 10:37And so we have John 15 five and it says, I am the vine.
- 10:39You are the branch.
- 10:41You remain in me and I remain in you and you will bear much fruit apart from me.
- 10:46You can do nothing.
- 10:48And so limit to you.
- 10:50And so whenever we are going through these difficult times, and I have just seen it so
- 10:55many times, time and time and time and time again, is that your life was going really
- 11:02good and you thought that you could do it on your own.
- 11:05And then you do what you feel you're supposed to do.
- 11:09And then life falls apart.
- 11:11And the lack of time that you've spent with him, you've lost his guidance.
- 11:15You've lost his knowledge and his wisdom because we're not connected to him.
- 11:23And whenever we look into that anxiety and depression and sadness and addiction, even,
- 11:30you know, it really looks into the unresolved sin and guilt.
- 11:33And so we're doing something that we know is not right.
- 11:36We know it's not right.
- 11:38And you know, we continue to do it because we feel like it's going to change something
- 11:45and that really is just not going to happen.
- 11:48And you continue to get in that cyclic pattern of unease and restlessness.
- 11:53And you just can't put your finger on it, but you just don't know what it is.
- 11:58And then we start believing like the lies that the enemy had told you, you're not worth
- 12:03it.
- 12:05You can't get over him.
- 12:09She's never going to come back.
- 12:13You're never going to lose that weight.
- 12:16You are such a loser.
- 12:19No one has ever loved you.
- 12:21No one's ever going to love you.
- 12:23Like you are such a screw up.
- 12:27And you start believing in that because you have that on repeat.
- 12:32And unfortunately, as society, we have always said that it's easier to believe the bad things
- 12:37and the good things.
- 12:39And so with Gia, I really try to iterate whenever she has a moment and she has lost her mind
- 12:47and she tries to say something negative about herself.
- 12:49I tell her, okay, so fine.
- 12:51So look up to heaven and tell God that he made a mistake.
- 12:55And she says, no, I can't.
- 12:57And I said, why?
- 12:58And she said, because he's never made a mistake.
- 12:59I'm like, okay.
- 13:01So you just said that you were this.
- 13:03And I said, I need you to point out that in scripture for me.
- 13:08I can't.
- 13:09Why?
- 13:10Because it's not there.
- 13:12Okay.
- 13:13So we know it's not truth because if it was true, then it would be in scripture.
- 13:18And then we have those moments where we're like, no, it's, and I know, I know I'm just
- 13:24a bad person.
- 13:25I'm this, I'm that.
- 13:26And if you can't find scripture to back it up, then it's not true.
- 13:30If God didn't say it about you, then you can't say it about yourself.
- 13:34And so looking at these different aspects, whenever you look at depression and anxiety,
- 13:45it really is maybe an eye opener to what the root of the issue is.
- 13:50And so how do I get back to the root of Jesus?
- 13:53And so instead of numbing your feelings and trying to do it on your own, bring them to
- 13:59Jesus, bring him to God.
- 14:02He's just waiting for you.
- 14:04And so Ephesians, or Philippians four, six through seven, it says, do not be anxious
- 14:10about anything, but in every situation by prayer and petition with Thanksgiving, present
- 14:15your request to God and the peace of God, which transcends all understandings will guard
- 14:20your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.
- 14:24And so whenever we're feeling alone, whenever we're feeling not worthy, whenever we're feeling
- 14:30like everyone's left me, everyone hates me, I can't do this.
- 14:35You always, always, always have someone to turn to.
- 14:38Your heavenly father is right there.
- 14:41He's waiting for you just to say, I'm sorry, I need your help.
- 14:45I don't know what I'm doing.
- 14:46I try to do it on my own and we repent.
- 14:49We repent from turning from him.
- 14:51We repent because we missed the mark.
- 14:53We repent because we know that we did something that was not in our best interest.
- 15:00And so we go to him and we repent.
- 15:02We turn from the thing that was keeping us from his side and we turn and walk the other
- 15:09direction and he knows that we're not going to be perfect.
- 15:13And he's just been waiting on you.
- 15:16And it really is just this amazing thing that Jesus paid for our sins, died on the cross
- 15:23because he knew that we were not going to be perfect, that we knew that we were going
- 15:27to miss the mark.
- 15:30And yet he chose to take that burden upon himself and to save us.
- 15:35And so we get the opportunity to enter the most holy of holies, to talk and commune with
- 15:40the almighty God.
- 15:41I mean, that just blows my mind.
- 15:44I just love it.
- 15:47And I get to explain this and talk with patients that are believers and unbelievers and walk
- 15:54unbelievers into faith and how we can have drug addicts and we can have people that they
- 16:02know that they're made for more.
- 16:04And we walk through this in a way that they are just like, oh my gosh, this has been at
- 16:12the whole time.
- 16:14I thought something was wrong with me.
- 16:17And it was the Holy Spirit.
- 16:19And so you have a watchful person out looking out after you and they want the best for you
- 16:25and they try to get your attention and he tries to get your attention.
- 16:29And sometimes he has to turn up the heat real high because we're ignoring him.
- 16:35And so spending time with him in prayer, in worship, in silence can be the best medication
- 16:44sometimes that you could ever do and speaking the truth over yourself, replace those lies
- 16:50with scripture.
- 16:52And we were in small group the other night and one of the ladies was talking about how
- 16:59you have to replace and repeat.
- 17:04And so we just wanted to make sure that we talked about how to replace those lies that
- 17:09you said, but you have to replace the lies with the truth.
- 17:12And so learning and talking about God's truth, but we memorize scripture.
- 17:19And so whenever we're in that moment and we don't have the YouVersion Bible app, we don't
- 17:24even have the energy to turn on our phone.
- 17:26We don't have the energy to flip through the Bible or do anything, but we've had that time
- 17:31to write a verse on our heart.
- 17:34We have that, I know that God said something about like, I shouldn't be anxious, I shouldn't
- 17:39be nervous.
- 17:40And you just say that on repeat.
- 17:42And so we replace those lies that the enemy said that you are not worthy.
- 17:46I'm pretty sure God called me worthy.
- 17:49He said I was beautifully and wonderfully made.
- 17:51He said I knit you together in your mother's womb.
- 17:55I mean, so you have so many scriptures that tell you that you are worthy, that you are
- 18:00loved, that you are tattooed on his hand.
- 18:03And so you can tell yourself these things and surround yourself and so and surround
- 18:08yourself with faith-filled community.
- 18:10We have said that and said that and then said that on this podcast so many times is that
- 18:15you have to surround yourself with people that are edifying, that build you up, that
- 18:20let you know that you are loved, that will call you out on your sin, that they know that
- 18:25you are not doing right.
- 18:26And so they have the authority to say, what are you doing?
- 18:30This is not right.
- 18:31Like, what are you doing?
- 18:32Like, this is not how we live our life.
- 18:35We've got to get you some help.
- 18:36We've got to get you on the right path.
- 18:41And so just because you're feeling distant doesn't mean that he isn't working.
- 18:45That means that maybe you need to turn to the right because he's at your right hand.
- 18:49And so Deuteronomy 31, 8 says, the Lord himself goes before you and he will be with you.
- 18:56He will never leave you nor forsake you.
- 18:59And so it doesn't matter what you've done, what drugs you've done, what lie you've said.
- 19:05If you choose Jesus as your Lord and Savior and repent and be baptized and really try
- 19:15to live a life that is pleasing to him.
- 19:19And he knows that we're not going to be perfect.
- 19:21He knows that we're going to miss the mark, but yet he loves us anyway.
- 19:25And thank God for his mercy and grace.
- 19:30And just enter his courts with thanksgiving like, I get to have another chance.
- 19:33I get to have another chance.
- 19:35And so he, you are never alone.
- 19:37You are loved.
- 19:38You are worthy.
- 19:40You are a child of the most high.
- 19:45And so I just want you to take this opportunity to look at the one step that you could do
- 19:52to move closer to God.
- 19:54He's already reaching out for you.
- 19:55It is the prodigal son story and it's the one that returns.
- 19:59And he's so excited to have you come back to him and realize that there is so much better
- 20:11for you on the other end of this.
- 20:14And so take a deeper look into what you are doing that you know would not be pleasing
- 20:22to your heavenly father.
- 20:24Take that to him and tell him that you're sorry and turn and walk the other way and
- 20:33walk with him and meet with him and talk with him every day.
- 20:37It's about a relationship with him and watch him teach you.
- 20:41The Holy Spirit will just make that Bible come alive and it will refresh your mind and
- 20:48your soul and your spirit.
- 20:50And you will just be refreshed and renewed.
- 20:56I cannot just put it into even words of just how good he is and how faithful he is and
- 21:02how he meets me every morning and how he gives me opportunities because I pray for the lost.
- 21:08I literally pray that he puts lost people in front of me that I have boldness to speak
- 21:13the faith and the truth over them and to let them know that they are loved and that he
- 21:19is paying attention to them and he hears them.
- 21:24And so I hope you guys accept that challenge.
- 21:28As we go into this next week, we hope that you were refreshed and renewed and that we
- 21:34are looking at what is in our lives that we could really get rid of that we don't necessarily
- 21:41need that we think that we need but we don't.
- 21:45And so that's your challenge this week.
- 21:47And so if you want to bow our heads, let's pray.
- 21:50Dear Heavenly Father, thank you so much for this opportunity.
- 21:52Thank you so much for this time.
- 21:54Thank you for the Holy Spirit.
- 21:56Thank you for the nudges.
- 21:57Thank you for the unease.
- 21:59Thank you for allowing us to know that you are paying attention to us.
- 22:03Thank you that you have allowed us to walk through this and so we can turn our focus
- 22:08on you.
- 22:10I pray that the listeners just fall back in love with you, that they look at the word
- 22:15and yet you've cleared their mind, that you've cleared their heart, that the words just jump
- 22:19off the page and that they are fully refreshed because of your goodness, because of your
- 22:24grace, because of your mercy.
- 22:26Thank you for everything that you do.
- 22:27In Jesus name I pray.
- 22:28Amen.
- 22:29And we hope that you guys have an amazing week this week.
- 22:34Stay tuned for next week.
- 22:36See you then.
