- 0:39SPEAKER_06: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast presented by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:47SPEAKER_06: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:50SPEAKER_06: Tristan, how are you doing today, man?
- 0:52SPEAKER_05: Your co-host is ready to talk about hosting.
- 0:56SPEAKER_05: That's how I'm doing.
- 0:58SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we are hosting.
- 1:00SPEAKER_06: Baseball is fun.
- 1:03SPEAKER_05: Baseball is very fun.
- 1:04SPEAKER_05: And we really surprised a lot of us amongst the fans and the baseball world.
- 1:09SPEAKER_05: Your Texas Tech Red Raiders landed in that coveted number eight spot.
- 1:14SPEAKER_05: We're the last ones to snag a regional hosting spot.
- 1:17SPEAKER_05: So I'm very, very happy about that.
- 1:20SPEAKER_06: And a super regional hosting spot at that, too.
- 1:23SPEAKER_06: Uh, then the top eight seeds in the NCAA tournament for baseball will host a super regional should they advance in the NCAA tournament.
- 1:32SPEAKER_06: Um, it's big time news because you know we're playing a good group of teams right here at the Lubbock Regional, but we are gonna host that super regional if we are to advance.
- 1:42SPEAKER_06: So it's really it was a surprise for a lot of tech fans because of the way we kind of ended off at the season.
- 1:48SPEAKER_06: The Big 12 tournament wasn't very good for us.
- 1:50SPEAKER_06: So um it was really cool seeing that we got that spot.
- 1:53SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 1:54SPEAKER_05: And uh kind of shows that maybe conference tournaments do indeed not mean as much as we sometimes think.
- 2:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 2:01SPEAKER_05: So yeah, I would say even though it was a a pretty bummer of a of an afternoon when we got knocked out by TCU, then K-State.
- 2:09SPEAKER_05: Uh, I'm glad that it apparently had zero reflection on the committee.
- 2:13SPEAKER_05: So I'm very happy that we still turned out to be the third best Big 12 team in the eyes of the committee.
- 2:19SPEAKER_05: And here we are in the position to perhaps host a super regional.
- 2:22SPEAKER_06: Well, and our resume spoke for itself, man.
- 2:25SPEAKER_06: I mean, you you look at the teams that we beat, that we won their series throughout the season, UT, TCU, Oklahoma State, all those teams we ended up beating, and that's what boosted our resume.
- 2:37SPEAKER_06: I think that's what put us above all the other teams that were vying for that final eighth national seed.
- 2:43SPEAKER_06: So um it's it's cool and it's weird seeing tech kind of get in off of uh kind of their name and kind of their reputation, which is not normal for Texas Tech Athletics.
- 2:55SPEAKER_05: Well, we were in the running to win the Big 12 all year, and we here we were pulling off these great wins, even with a a very beat-up injury list we had.
- 3:04SPEAKER_05: So it was impressive the whole year.
- 3:06SPEAKER_05: We never quit.
- 3:07SPEAKER_05: Tadlock knows how to push forward, and I think our postseason resume also helps us get that reputation a bit more, too, because we've have succeeded quite well in the postseason in the last five years.
- 3:20SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we turn it on when we need to turn on, and you've seen that this season when we played our top dogs in the Big 12.
- 3:26SPEAKER_06: We've come up and and won, you know, against UTTCU and Oklahoma State, the other three top teams in the Big 12.
- 3:33SPEAKER_06: We have managed to win those series.
- 3:34SPEAKER_06: And so we bring it when it matters.
- 3:36SPEAKER_06: The bad part is we have not brought it when it doesn't really matter.
- 3:40SPEAKER_06: Well, you know, I I don't want to say doesn't matter, but when it's not as big a game, we haven't really brought it in terms of the Baylor series, the K-State series, all that all that sort of stuff.
- 3:50SPEAKER_06: We just haven't uh really brought it.
- 3:52SPEAKER_06: And I don't know if that's a mental thing, I don't know if that's just not getting your team up and ready.
- 3:56SPEAKER_06: I don't know if it's thinking you're too good for it, but right now you got to throw all that out because all these teams are awesome that have made this NCAA tournament.
- 4:04SPEAKER_06: No team is bad by any means, and uh we have a tough sledding coming ahead, man.
- 4:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it really looks like we are playing to the level of our competition.
- 4:11SPEAKER_05: You know, we would get really hyped up for the big games and perhaps look past the lower games.
- 4:15SPEAKER_05: So, and like you were just saying, here we are in the postseason, not a single team will be bad.
- 4:20SPEAKER_05: So you have to bring in every single week, and this is starting with our troops, so we have to respect them come first game.
- 4:28SPEAKER_06: We always respect the troops, and uh, as you're saying, this is the four-team lineup that we have at the Lubbock Regional.
- 4:35SPEAKER_06: It's gonna be, of course, your Texas Tech Red Raiders.
- 4:38SPEAKER_06: Uh, the two seed is going to be UCLA, three seed North Carolina, and four seed Army, the troops always gotta respect them, never don't respect the troops.
- 4:49SPEAKER_06: So when uh we are playing Army because Army is the fourth seed.
- 4:54SPEAKER_06: We play them 11 a.m.
- 4:56SPEAKER_06: Eastern or no, I'm sorry, 11 a.m.
- 4:58SPEAKER_06: Central Time.
- 4:59SPEAKER_06: We don't live on Eastern time, central time on ESB and U.
- 5:03SPEAKER_06: Uh, and uh, you know, I I hate that we have to play the troops, I really do because I respect the heck out of them.
- 5:08SPEAKER_05: You always cheer for the academies, that's the rule.
- 5:12SPEAKER_05: And I the only time you have to cheer against them is when they're playing your team.
- 5:15SPEAKER_05: So that kind of hurts.
- 5:17SPEAKER_05: But we are talking about an army team that was the champion of their conference, so uh we better respect them because they definitely got there through their schedule, no problem to make it to this point.
- 5:27SPEAKER_05: Obviously, a huge accomplishment.
- 5:28SPEAKER_05: But I'm glad Tim Tadlock has put us in the position for the fifth season in a row, y'all, in the regional to be the only team, the only team, by the way, to do that.
- 5:38SPEAKER_06: Um, it really impressive stuff ever since Tadlock came on in 2013.
- 5:43SPEAKER_06: We have been nothing short of impressive every year since 2016, minus 2020, because there was not one.
- 5:50SPEAKER_06: We have hosted a regional.
- 5:52SPEAKER_06: I mean, just uh the only school that can say that, which is unbelievably impressive.
- 5:56SPEAKER_06: It's something that shows how good our baseball program is and how far we've come.
- 6:01SPEAKER_05: The nice thing about being in the isolated town of of Lubbock, Texas, none of these other schools are even close.
- 6:08SPEAKER_05: So it's gonna be a red raider ballpark, so that which is a great home field advantage.
- 6:14SPEAKER_06: No doubt.
- 6:15SPEAKER_06: Uh, I would say the team to look out for is of course UCLA.
- 6:18SPEAKER_06: They're very hot right now.
- 6:20SPEAKER_06: Uh apparently they're getting a lot of love from the national media right now.
- 6:24SPEAKER_06: So look out for UCLA.
- 6:26SPEAKER_06: Uh, North Carolina, another formidable opponent.
- 6:28SPEAKER_06: Obviously, they put together some great teams before.
- 6:31SPEAKER_06: So um it's gonna be it's gonna be tough, man.
- 6:33SPEAKER_06: I mean, as the eighth seed, you're kind of you're you're still getting some of those top dogs, you know.
- 6:38SPEAKER_06: You don't have the luxury of being uh Arkansas or Texas, whoever got the one and two seed uh to play, you know, the guys who barely made it in, the teams that barely made it into uh uh to the tournament.
- 6:49SPEAKER_06: So um, you know, we can't take any of these games lightly, and it's gonna be really fun, man.
- 6:53SPEAKER_06: That's the all these games are gonna be this weekend, June 4th through the 7th.
- 6:56SPEAKER_06: Uh, and I know I'm gonna be glued to my TV.
- 6:59SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 7:00SPEAKER_05: And it's the postseason.
- 7:01SPEAKER_05: It's it's kind of like watching March Madness.
- 7:03SPEAKER_05: You know, every game matters, and you got to bring in every game because everybody wants to get to that natty, and anybody can do it.
- 7:07SPEAKER_05: So uh I know our boys are gonna bring it.
- 7:10SPEAKER_05: I can't wait to be talking about who we're gonna be talking uh hitting the next round, uh, knock on wood there real quick, but it's gonna be a fun few games.
- 7:18SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no doubt, man.
- 7:19SPEAKER_06: So baseball, look out for it.
- 7:21SPEAKER_06: It is the best time of year for baseball, it's the best time of year for tech baseball.
- 7:25SPEAKER_06: So uh we're gonna move on right here.
- 7:27SPEAKER_06: I know you had some beef uh here with the uh a certain university that is in the Big 12.
- 7:34SPEAKER_06: Uh, you had something to say about it, so go ahead.
- 7:37SPEAKER_06: I I did, sir.
- 7:38SPEAKER_05: I have uh I have a beef with the Sooners of Oklahoma.
- 7:43SPEAKER_05: As you know, the TV schedules recently got released.
- 7:46SPEAKER_05: We could talk about text here in a moment, but I'd like to talk about OU's little temper tantrum they threw.
- 7:54SPEAKER_05: Uh so they released a statement.
- 7:55SPEAKER_05: The uh the athletic directors talked about how bitterly disappointed they were that the Oklahoma-Nebraska game would be hosted at the 11 a.m.
- 8:02SPEAKER_05: spot come there, come come game time.
- 8:05SPEAKER_05: And I just wanted to there's this was filled with a bunch of OU fans being incredibly salty about the time, saying they get a ton of 11 a.m.
- 8:13SPEAKER_05: games, saying how they don't get the respect they deserve, how son and the the what really chapped my thighs was was were the fans that were saying, get us out of the Big 12 already.
- 8:28SPEAKER_05: That this is not the Big 12's fault at all.
- 8:31SPEAKER_05: All right, step one prime time for Fox is 11 a.m.
- 8:36SPEAKER_05: Their big noon kickoff is marketed as their prime time slot.
- 8:40SPEAKER_05: That way they don't have to compete with CBS or ESPN for those later times.
- 8:44SPEAKER_05: That's just you can complain about that being the uh the 11 a.m.
- 8:47SPEAKER_05: being a bad primetime spot, whatever.
- 8:50SPEAKER_05: It's just what it is.
- 8:51SPEAKER_05: And here's the thing about it networks are paying you a boatload of money to schedule you when they want in their programming.
- 9:00SPEAKER_05: It's not up to the Big 12 to tell them when they can put you on TV, or else the Big 12 would say, Oh, you goes at night every single time.
- 9:08SPEAKER_05: That's just not how it works.
- 9:10SPEAKER_05: They pay you so they can do this, so they can fit you in their schedule.
- 9:13SPEAKER_05: And you got the prime time spot.
- 9:15SPEAKER_05: And number two, Nebraska is awful.
- 9:18SPEAKER_05: This is not the primetime game you want to think it is.
- 9:21SPEAKER_05: Nebraska is terrible.
- 9:22SPEAKER_05: I get it's this old school rivalry, if you even want to call that anymore, after they left, and it hasn't really been competitive for a good while.
- 9:29SPEAKER_05: Nebraska is just not who they used to be.
- 9:31SPEAKER_05: I don't think they'll ever be who they were ever again.
- 9:34SPEAKER_05: They might become a good team eventually, but I don't think they're gonna become an Alabama ever again.
- 9:39SPEAKER_05: So that's just that's another thing.
- 9:41SPEAKER_05: And next step, back to the Big 12.
- 9:43SPEAKER_05: You run this conference, you get everything you could ever want, you get trophies every single year at the moment.
- 9:49SPEAKER_05: Uh, to these fans that think that it's the Big 12's fault that you're not winning the national championship, you're completely wrong.
- 9:56SPEAKER_05: Your rooting clay, your recruiting classes are on par with pretty much anybody that can win it.
- 10:00SPEAKER_05: And if you want to talk about a conference holding you back for some reason, go to Clemson.
- 10:05SPEAKER_05: If you really think the ACC is better than the Big 12 in that sense, you're not watching college football, or even Ohio State.
- 10:11SPEAKER_05: Ohio State pulled it off, and the Big Ten isn't exactly awesome every single year.
- 10:15SPEAKER_05: It's not as consistently good as uh the SEC, so it's definitely not the Big 12.
- 10:20SPEAKER_05: If anything, the Big 12 is putting you in a better position to win that game.
- 10:23SPEAKER_05: So next, it's you know, it enough with this.
- 10:29SPEAKER_05: We want to be in a better academic conference nonsense.
- 10:32SPEAKER_05: That is just the dumbest argument I can ever imagine.
- 10:36SPEAKER_05: No one gives a flip, and your your your athletic department doesn't give a rat's behind about what school it's in the same conference as.
- 10:52SPEAKER_06: This is your rant.
- 10:53SPEAKER_06: I know the academic part of things is the stupidest argument I've ever heard.
- 10:58SPEAKER_06: I mean, I truly and honestly, you know, these conferences are not benefiting whatsoever from having a Vanderbilt or having a Rutgers or having a whatever for their academics, a Wake Forest, I don't know, Northwestern, Northwestern, whatever.
- 11:16SPEAKER_06: Like, take it easy, guys.
- 11:18SPEAKER_06: We're talking about sports here, we're not talking about academics.
- 11:21SPEAKER_06: I know that you want to brag and say that has no effect on me as a sports fan to say that your school is better academically than mine, it just doesn't.
- 11:30SPEAKER_05: No honest Sooner fan cares about that.
- 11:34SPEAKER_05: OU is not Harvard.
- 11:35SPEAKER_05: I'm not saying it's a bad school, but it's just your regular state school like the rest of us in this conference.
- 11:40SPEAKER_05: I'm not saying any of us are brainiacs, and uh it no one in the sporting world cares.
- 11:46SPEAKER_05: We just want to see good sports, and so that that especially goes out the window if you say you want to go to the SEC.
- 11:52SPEAKER_05: It's no better than the Big 12, it's just full of regular state schools.
- 11:55SPEAKER_05: So I and okay, let's let's get to that.
- 11:58SPEAKER_05: Let's go to the SEC real quick.
- 12:00SPEAKER_05: If you go to the SEC West, say goodbye to your streak.
- 12:05SPEAKER_05: You are gonna be at best another LSU.
- 12:08SPEAKER_05: Alabama's gonna own your behind.
- 12:10SPEAKER_05: You're every once in a while you'll have a season like LSU and come up and uh get that every five-year championship.
- 12:17SPEAKER_05: Do you really want that?
- 12:19SPEAKER_05: Your recruiting will not be substantially better because it's already top-notch.
- 12:23SPEAKER_05: And again, you're just gonna be in a conference that's dominated by Nick Savens, Alabama.
- 12:28SPEAKER_05: Until he leaves that school, that that conference belongs to Alabama, and you wouldn't even be on the East where you have a shot to make it to the championship.
- 12:35SPEAKER_05: Next, same in the big, same in the Big Ten.
- 12:38SPEAKER_05: Look at what Nebraska same look what happened with Nebraska.
- 12:41SPEAKER_05: They're awful now, they are completely irrelevant in the college sporting world because they left their rivalries and they left their base.
- 12:48SPEAKER_05: So now they all they do is just bend their knees to Ohio State, Michigan, and even Wisconsin and Iowa own them.
- 12:56SPEAKER_05: So they went from the Kings to the surf, and that's what would happen to OU.
- 13:01SPEAKER_05: Oh you again would become at best like a Michigan.
- 13:04SPEAKER_05: Ohio State would probably still win most of the time because that's their conference, that's their recruiting base.
- 13:09SPEAKER_05: So it's just it's a complete the gas grass is greener, and you do not make more you don't make enough more money in those conferences to make a difference.
- 13:16SPEAKER_05: You probably don't make more money in the SCC because the third tier rights in the Big 12 are set up where schools can have their exclusive money bags.
- 13:23SPEAKER_05: So I can't see a real situation of why the big the OU blows up the Big 12 because if they they leave, the Big 12 is probably blown up or at least restructured to an unrecognizable unrecognizable version of itself.
- 13:37SPEAKER_05: Why you would do that just for the sake of 11 a.m.
- 13:40SPEAKER_05: games is beyond me.
- 13:42SPEAKER_06: Well, and you gotta think that if OU gets away from Texas, that's gotta be a huge knock on their own recruiting.
- 13:49SPEAKER_06: I mean, if they get away from playing the University of Texas, playing us, playing playing Oklahoma State Baylor, uh, Oklahoma State, all that stuff, it would be a massive recruiting hit in terms of that.
- 14:00SPEAKER_06: I mean, uh sure you could argue that they're going and getting whatever Big Ten or SEC, whatever those states are, but uh OU could have their players from Texas every single year.
- 14:10SPEAKER_06: So for them not to play at Texas School, I think would only hurt their recruiting.
- 14:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so really the the only argument they're trying to go for here is it's it keeps hindering on this 11 a.m.
- 14:20SPEAKER_05: not prime time thing because they say that this is what's hurting their recruiting because players don't want to watch 11 a.m.
- 14:26SPEAKER_05: games or visit OU at 11 a.m.
- 14:29SPEAKER_05: I really don't think that's a logical case because not every game will be at 11 a.m.
- 14:35SPEAKER_05: And if you think that a 16-year-old kid is really judging this on when he plays a football game, I I I don't I can't speak for these young men, but I don't think I would let that be the basis of what school I go to.
- 14:47SPEAKER_06: Also, they have the least amount of 11 a.m.
- 14:49SPEAKER_06: games of any team in the Big 12, by the way.
- 14:52SPEAKER_06: Uh so uh there's there's nothing to complain about.
- 14:56SPEAKER_06: Listen, the 11 a.m.
- 14:59SPEAKER_06: slot stinks if you're tailgating, it does not stink for everything else.
- 15:05SPEAKER_06: It does, it hurts the game day atmosphere because people don't want to get up at 7 in the morning.
- 15:10SPEAKER_06: And I listen, we did it, but we're not everybody.
- 15:13SPEAKER_06: So I you know, people want when they wake up in the morning to see a game at 11 a.m.
- 15:20SPEAKER_06: where everybody is awake, unless you're a degenerate who sleeps in until noon or one every day.
- 15:26SPEAKER_06: I mean, you're seeing those games.
- 15:28SPEAKER_06: There's there's not fans on a Saturday that are missing those games for sleeping purposes, if that's what you want to call it.
- 15:37SPEAKER_05: You're the game everyone's watching that morning, you know.
- 15:40SPEAKER_05: It's it's again, it's not the game you think it is either.
- 15:44SPEAKER_05: No, you're gonna they're gonna beat Nebraska by at least 20 points, it's gonna be over probably by halftime.
- 15:50SPEAKER_06: It's gonna be a 50-point game.
- 15:52SPEAKER_06: Like Nebraska is that bad right now.
- 15:55SPEAKER_05: There they're so bad.
- 15:56SPEAKER_05: So that's just the end of my rant.
- 15:58SPEAKER_05: I I'm a I my bias is obviously towards Texas Tech, which is pro Big 12, because I care about the health of this conference in to for Texas Tech's sake.
- 16:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so because at best, if this falls apart, we're and we're in the pack, that's I'm still not very happy about that.
- 16:13SPEAKER_05: So it wouldn't be either, and that would be with those academic schools like Stanford.
- 16:18SPEAKER_06: So fantastic, yeah.
- 16:20SPEAKER_06: I don't I don't care.
- 16:22SPEAKER_06: I'm a dishonest OU fan.
- 16:24SPEAKER_06: I do not care.
- 16:27SPEAKER_06: So academics is not an argument for me.
- 16:30SPEAKER_06: Sorry, everybody that's going that route, but let's move on.
- 16:34SPEAKER_06: I know we all hate the Sooners.
- 16:36SPEAKER_06: Uh, I appreciated that rant, man.
- 16:37SPEAKER_06: That was very good.
- 16:38SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 16:39SPEAKER_05: And just like a lot of Big 12 uh biased outlets are talking about it right now, and I just had to take my two cents on it.
- 16:45SPEAKER_06: It's big news, so I appreciate that.
- 16:47SPEAKER_06: But let's talk about what we did do uh in terms of Texas Tech stuff, because we just introduced a new program for our student athletes all across all sports, uh, called Beyond Verified.
- 16:59SPEAKER_06: So uh basically providing photoslash video content to student athletes.
- 17:04SPEAKER_06: Uh, they're gonna give them courses on how to better manage their money uh, you know, after college and everything that comes with it in terms of social media and all that kind of stuff.
- 17:15SPEAKER_06: Um, basically, this is a recruiting tool.
- 17:18SPEAKER_06: Um, this is something to uh get ahead of the curve when it comes to the uh image and likeness stuff that the NCAA is sure.
- 17:26SPEAKER_06: I don't know if they've already passed it or if they're going to pass it here soon, but basically, players or student athletes are going to be able to profit off of their image and likeness uh here pretty soon.
- 17:38SPEAKER_06: So um this is basically tech saying, hey, we're gonna get ahead of the curve with this.
- 17:42SPEAKER_06: We're gonna give you the proper guidance and the proper resources you need for post-college, for during college, for anything that you would possibly need.
- 17:51SPEAKER_06: So it's good, man.
- 17:52SPEAKER_06: They're getting ahead of the curve, and I like what they're introducing here.
- 17:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think they're just getting ahead of this inevitable wave that's about to just crash and change college sports as we know it when it comes to like player compensation.
- 18:04SPEAKER_05: So I like that tech is establishing themselves as a progressive program.
- 18:08SPEAKER_05: It'll definitely help with our recruiting.
- 18:10SPEAKER_05: And at Tex Tech, I'd appreciate any edge we can on the competition.
- 18:14SPEAKER_05: And plus, if it benefits the players, more power to them.
- 18:17SPEAKER_05: You know, like let the players get the get the exposure they can while they have the moment.
- 18:22SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we're not gonna get into the whole should players be paid argument.
- 18:26SPEAKER_06: I like this from the NCAA.
- 18:28SPEAKER_06: I like the idea of them benefiting off of their own name and likeness when it comes to like, I don't know, selling their their jerseys, their uniforms or whatever, or signing autographs or any, you know, whatever they want to do uh to profit off of what who they are and what they've brought to the table.
- 18:47SPEAKER_06: So uh, you know, I appreciate this from Texas Tech.
- 18:50SPEAKER_06: I think it's a a really good thing to introduce right now, uh, kind of getting ahead of the curve.
- 18:55SPEAKER_06: I know Oklahoma State did something similar uh right before we did.
- 18:59SPEAKER_06: So uh, you know, I think everybody's gonna start introducing this sort of stuff here pretty soon.
- 19:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we're probably gonna be seeing schools popping up like crazy doing something very similar.
- 19:07SPEAKER_05: So I'm glad we're one of the first.
- 19:09SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:10SPEAKER_06: And so it's it's a good thing.
- 19:12SPEAKER_06: It's a good thing Texas Tech fans who are a little confused by it.
- 19:15SPEAKER_06: I know some of the uh uh I don't want to call out, you know, I don't want to call out the boomers or whatever, but you know, it's just people that don't quite understand what this is all about.
- 19:24SPEAKER_06: This is what it's all about.
- 19:26SPEAKER_06: It's getting ahead of the curve.
- 19:28SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 19:28SPEAKER_05: And I think any Texas Tech fan can appreciate that, hopefully.
- 19:31SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:32SPEAKER_06: So you can have whatever thoughts you want about athletes getting money or whatever, but this is a good thing.
- 19:38SPEAKER_06: So um we'll move on.
- 19:40SPEAKER_06: We'll move on because we got two commits.
- 19:42SPEAKER_06: One, which we didn't talk about, that happened uh a few weeks ago, I think.
- 19:47SPEAKER_06: But foot, we'll talk about football first.
- 19:49SPEAKER_06: Football.
- 19:50SPEAKER_06: Kalen Geiger committing to Texas Tech.
- 19:53SPEAKER_06: He is a speedy wide receiver, a slot guy.
- 19:56SPEAKER_06: Uh transfer from Troy, who we are now adding to the team.
- 20:00SPEAKER_06: Uh, this is a great pickup, man.
- 20:02SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 20:02SPEAKER_05: He seemed to be uh pretty coveted, and it looks like he's got some good accolades to bring over to Texas Tech because he was a former Sunbelt player, newcomer of the year, and uh first team all conference in the Sunbelt.
- 20:12SPEAKER_05: And uh so he obviously this guy can play, even if it's at a lower level, that that that's a sort of talent that can transfer if used right.
- 20:20SPEAKER_05: Um he went to school in Fort Worth, so that helped push him towards us, obviously getting to play close to home.
- 20:24SPEAKER_05: And uh he had interest from Hawaii, Nebraska, Mississippi State, Penn State, and TCU.
- 20:29SPEAKER_05: So I'm glad Matt Wells was able to put on his salesman hat and bring him over some of those bigger names.
- 20:34SPEAKER_06: Matt Wells has been able to do that in the past.
- 20:36SPEAKER_06: So uh no, no beef with who Matt Wells has brought under the program.
- 20:41SPEAKER_06: It's just how it transfers and how we uh how we use it.
- 20:46SPEAKER_06: So uh big time commit, you know, he adds depth to the slot wide receiver position.
- 20:51SPEAKER_06: We already have guys like Dalton Rigdon, uh McLean Mannix, Miles Price, those type of guys, but this only adds to it gets a more experienced guy in there as well.
- 21:00SPEAKER_06: So uh this is a good thing.
- 21:01SPEAKER_06: This is a really good thing for the team for the offense for Tyler Shuck.
- 21:05SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 21:06SPEAKER_05: So it it all hinges on on we're kind of thinking that the season hinges a lot on Tyler Shuck.
- 21:11SPEAKER_05: So the more weapons you can give him, uh the better.
- 21:14SPEAKER_06: A whole lot rides on Tyler Shuck and how good he's gonna be.
- 21:17SPEAKER_06: So Matt Wells is like, yeah, it sure does.
- 21:21SPEAKER_06: He's like giving everything he needs.
- 21:23SPEAKER_06: This is my job, Tyler.
- 21:25SPEAKER_06: Come on, let's figure it out.
- 21:27SPEAKER_06: So, but let's move on to the basketball commit that we did not talk about last week because we selfishly forgot.
- 21:33SPEAKER_06: I don't know if it's selfish, but we just forgot.
- 21:36SPEAKER_06: Uh, because we're idiots again, like everybody that's listened to talking tech for a while.
- 21:39SPEAKER_06: We are two idiots, but we forget things occasionally.
- 21:42SPEAKER_06: Daniel Bacho committing to Texas Tech basketball, the transfer from Arizona.
- 21:48SPEAKER_06: He's a big guy.
- 21:49SPEAKER_06: This is the first big guy that we've gotten uh this season.
- 21:53SPEAKER_06: I mean, big, big guy.
- 21:54SPEAKER_06: I mean, six eleven, two forty five.
- 21:57SPEAKER_06: So um, major ad for Mark Adams and And his staff.
- 22:01SPEAKER_05: Finally got the tall man we were looking for.
- 22:03SPEAKER_05: We've been looking for a tree.
- 22:04SPEAKER_05: And this one's a French tree.
- 22:06SPEAKER_06: French tree.
- 22:07SPEAKER_06: We're getting in there, dipping into the international waters.
- 22:10SPEAKER_06: Once more.
- 22:11SPEAKER_06: Yeah, not only with Clarence Nidolney, but getting Daniel Boccio as well.
- 22:16SPEAKER_06: And I gotta say, I tried my hardest to watch as much film as I could on him.
- 22:21SPEAKER_06: There's just not a lot out there.
- 22:23SPEAKER_06: And he's he's had some injuries, which probably feeds to that a little bit.
- 22:28SPEAKER_06: Uh Clarence Nadoly did say he knew him and uh, you know, watched him a little bit uh growing.
- 22:34SPEAKER_06: I don't know if it was growing up or just in youth camps or whatever, but uh, you know, there's a lot of praise from this guy.
- 22:40SPEAKER_06: He was a four-star.
- 22:41SPEAKER_06: He was probably the most coveted international big man of 2020 that went the NCAA route.
- 22:47SPEAKER_06: So uh, you know, I can't say this is a bad pickup.
- 22:50SPEAKER_06: This is a really good pickup for Mark Adams and Co.
- 22:53SPEAKER_06: Obviously, the injury concerns are big time.
- 22:55SPEAKER_06: He's had some uh knee issues, had a kneecap injury in 2018, and then had some surgery uh this past season that put him out of the 2020-2021 season at Arizona.
- 23:08SPEAKER_06: So um, man, I mean, uh from the little tape I saw of him, he's got nice hands, which is good for a big guy.
- 23:14SPEAKER_06: Um, he's traditional, he's a more traditional big guy playing down low, gritting and grinding underneath, getting rebounds, getting boards, posting up on a lot of stuff, which you don't see a lot these days.
- 23:25SPEAKER_06: Uh, you you like a big guy who can, you know, kind of spread outside the perimeter, but with college basketball, it's a little different.
- 23:31SPEAKER_06: Um, so uh this is a good pickup.
- 23:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and the one thing that's really been missing on this roster so far is size.
- 23:39SPEAKER_05: So no matter what, it's just good to have some stretch there.
- 23:43SPEAKER_05: And I just hope that he pays out on the court as well.
- 23:46SPEAKER_05: So as even if it's just general big man duties, he's not exactly like a superstar elsewhere.
- 23:51SPEAKER_06: Yeah, back to the basket, pick and roll, you know, roll into the basket, that type of stuff.
- 23:56SPEAKER_06: Uh, not again, not a shooter by any means, but solid free throw shooter.
- 24:01SPEAKER_06: Um, apparently, you know, about 70 70 to 75 percent from the line, which is what we need.
- 24:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah, good for going up, exactly.
- 24:08SPEAKER_06: Please get fouled and go get your two buckets from the line.
- 24:12SPEAKER_06: Um, really good touch around the basket, which was uh something I like to see.
- 24:17SPEAKER_06: Uh, you know, he when you're getting ransacked by two, three guys at a time, you like to see a guy who can finish at the rim and not, you know, doesn't just yeet the ball into the into the rim.
- 24:28SPEAKER_06: But uh he does look a little clumsy, and I'm I'm a little curious to see how the knee injuries have have added to that clumsiness.
- 24:38SPEAKER_06: Um uh his footwork isn't fantastic, and of course, he's 19 years old, so not a lot of big guys that are seven feet tall are gonna be the most balanced individuals.
- 24:50SPEAKER_06: So uh he's got time and he and apparently that injury is not gonna be a concern moving forward.
- 24:56SPEAKER_06: Apparently, he was cleared to play by the like when last season was still going on.
- 25:02SPEAKER_06: But coach Sean Miller, who has now been fired from Arizona, said that uh he just wasn't integrated enough into the lineup to get good playing time last season, and that's why he didn't play towards the end.
- 25:15SPEAKER_06: So uh injury, don't be concerned by it.
- 25:18SPEAKER_06: He's 100% healthy apparently.
- 25:20SPEAKER_06: Uh and uh he's a good ad for Mark Adams, getting some height on the roster.
- 25:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you need just explained probably why he transferred as well, you know, wasn't able to get integrated into that lineup and coaching leaving.
- 25:29SPEAKER_05: So uh I'm excited to see what he can do.
- 25:31SPEAKER_05: And Arizona's a great basketball school, so obviously the guy is is worth some salt.
- 25:36SPEAKER_05: I guess whenever you live on stilts, you gotta figure it out as a young man.
- 25:40SPEAKER_05: So I'm excited to see how he develops under the staff for sure, and we'll see moving forward.
- 25:44SPEAKER_06: So uh, but we did get some more some more basketball stuff just to keep in on the basketball flow.
- 25:49SPEAKER_06: Uh Big East Challenge.
- 25:51SPEAKER_06: So the Big 12 and the Big East have this challenge going on.
- 25:53SPEAKER_06: I think we've had it for what three, four years now, maybe.
- 25:56SPEAKER_06: Um unfortunately, our opponent, we uh we grabbed Providence uh out of the Big East, and it's at Providence next season for uh for the basketball team.
- 26:06SPEAKER_06: Uh, not a great grab uh for Texas Tech, uh kind of more just one of the more mediocre teams of the Big East.
- 26:13SPEAKER_06: They've had some good seasons, but uh, and they have I I don't know, the whole Big East is famous.
- 26:19SPEAKER_06: So the Providence has put together some good teams.
- 26:21SPEAKER_06: They had the Rick Patino years and everything like that, but uh just in terms of today's college basketball, it's it's a mediocre opponent.
- 26:30SPEAKER_06: You know, you always wish you get the mil Villanovas or the Creightons of you know the big East.
- 26:35SPEAKER_06: So um kind of kind of lame.
- 26:38SPEAKER_05: Unpopular take for me.
- 26:39SPEAKER_05: I I'm kind of happy it's a more mediocre team.
- 26:41SPEAKER_05: You know, we have it's it's a it's a freshman year for a new coaching staff, and I would I would like a doable P6 win to add on to their resume and kind of find their feet and and figure how this team out before uh we get into the the meat of the season and the perhaps the postseason.
- 26:59SPEAKER_05: So I'm I'm cool with these decent games.
- 27:01SPEAKER_05: I don't I don't need to I don't think we need to go against the world beaters this season to to prove anything right now.
- 27:06SPEAKER_06: You know, I hear what you're saying, and you're saying the same thing that uh Alby Shore said from the tortillas and takes podcast on Twitter with us today.
- 27:15SPEAKER_06: Uh he was basically like, you know, let's get the dub, you know, let's let's get a power six dub and uh add to the resume.
- 27:22SPEAKER_06: And I understand that take.
- 27:24SPEAKER_06: Uh from my perspective, I just want to play the best.
- 27:27SPEAKER_06: I think Texas Tech deserves that.
- 27:28SPEAKER_06: I think we're the program, a premier program in college basketball still.
- 27:33SPEAKER_06: And we've said that multiple times, no matter beard or not, we're still a premier program in college basketball.
- 27:38SPEAKER_06: And I really think being able to play the top dogs, I would rather have that than play a mid-tier opponent like a Providence or a or a Xavier or a Butler right now.
- 27:50SPEAKER_06: So uh, you know, I that's why I'm disappointed in what who we got.
- 27:54SPEAKER_05: Bro, I love that fire for the team.
- 27:57SPEAKER_05: I do.
- 27:57SPEAKER_05: So I mean, I I absolutely hear what you're saying.
- 28:00SPEAKER_05: And if anything, let's just go and prove that then.
- 28:02SPEAKER_05: Let's go to Providence Providence and just smack them and be like, you should have gave us a tougher guy, should have given us a better team to play if you don't want this to happen, you know.
- 28:10SPEAKER_05: So I'm happy for us to contribute to the Big 12 side in that in that rink and just prove that we should have played somebody better.
- 28:15SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it's not like Providence is a bad team, bad program or anything.
- 28:19SPEAKER_06: They finished around the same that we did last season, about 500 in conference.
- 28:24SPEAKER_06: So Providence isn't a bad team, it's just it's just kind of boring for me, you know.
- 28:29SPEAKER_06: For for being Texas Tech, you're playing a big East team, not you know, we don't play big East teams often.
- 28:34SPEAKER_06: So when you do play a big East team, you want that to be the top dogs.
- 28:38SPEAKER_05: Well, this is a season of proving things, you know.
- 28:41SPEAKER_05: Tons of people have written us off.
- 28:43SPEAKER_05: They said up, Texas Tech is dead.
- 28:46SPEAKER_05: It was just the coach, and there's nothing to the program anymore.
- 28:48SPEAKER_05: The magic is gone, and this is just the season to prove that they're completely wrong.
- 28:52SPEAKER_05: So if we go out there and just do what we need to do, win games, uh, I think we'll get that mystique right back.
- 28:58SPEAKER_05: People be like, okay, maybe this is a program that deserves to be looked at continually.
- 29:03SPEAKER_06: It is, and we gotta take care of business, like you said.
- 29:05SPEAKER_06: So, no matter who we're playing, we got to take care of business.
- 29:07SPEAKER_06: So, whoever you draw, this is gonna be an away game, so it's not gonna be easy.
- 29:12SPEAKER_06: Away games are always difficult, especially in Rhode Island, yeah, in an unfamiliar territory.
- 29:16SPEAKER_06: We don't go to Rhode Island very often.
- 29:18SPEAKER_05: Don't know how our fan base is there.
- 29:21SPEAKER_06: I don't, I don't think you know, Texas Tech fans show up for whatever they will, but Providence is far, man.
- 29:26SPEAKER_05: So and it's not MSG, you know, where you can like take a trip and do all that, but exactly.
- 29:31SPEAKER_06: No one's going to take a vacation to Providence, so we're already talking mess to uh to the Friars for next season.
- 29:39SPEAKER_05: We'll be adding at the the the Fryer podcast and see what's up.
- 29:43SPEAKER_06: We will.
- 29:44SPEAKER_06: We'll we'll we'll reach out to the Fryer blogs, see what they have to say about Texas Tech.
- 29:50SPEAKER_06: But um, and just keeping on with the basketball front, new additions coming in, arriving to Lubbock.
- 29:57SPEAKER_06: I I always find this cool, I always find this fun because there's always this iffy stuff when it comes to players committing to programs, and we'll get into that a little later with Chandler Jacobs.
- 30:07SPEAKER_06: But KJ Allen, Siddhar Calhoun, Davion Warren, Adonis Arms, everybody's in Lubbock right now for those four guys.
- 30:16SPEAKER_06: So uh big time stuff, getting them in the wobble, getting them started, integrated with the team, with Kevin McCullough, with Marcus Santosilva, with all these guys that are already here.
- 30:27SPEAKER_06: Uh, it's it's only good.
- 30:29SPEAKER_06: The more time, the better with your team.
- 30:31SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 30:32SPEAKER_05: I mean, this this is the this is the time to develop our team.
- 30:35SPEAKER_05: Uh, we it's a long off season, and uh I really hope we're taking advantage of those new facilities.
- 30:40SPEAKER_05: And and I definitely want to see what this coaching staff is made of.
- 30:42SPEAKER_05: And I'm really liking what I'm seeing.
- 30:44SPEAKER_05: I'm loving the the Twitter presence, I'm loving the community presence.
- 30:47SPEAKER_05: I've been nothing but completely satisfied with what's been going on so far.
- 30:51SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 30:52SPEAKER_06: Everybody's shouting out the team, everybody's behind them.
- 30:54SPEAKER_06: So uh, you know, guys, get your work in, get your summer offseason grind in.
- 30:59SPEAKER_06: New strength and conditioning coach Darby Rich.
- 31:01SPEAKER_06: Get them ready to go uh athletic-wise for the season for Big 12 play.
- 31:07SPEAKER_06: A lot of these guys haven't played in a power conference before, so uh, you know, beef up, get ready.
- 31:11SPEAKER_06: So it's a different beast, man.
- 31:13SPEAKER_05: Yes, uh, this has been Kim Kim Palm's toughest conference for a long time running now.
- 31:18SPEAKER_05: So it's it's it's no cakewalk, it's no it's no community college ring.
- 31:22SPEAKER_06: You're going you're going Texas, you're going Baylor, you're going Kansas.
- 31:26SPEAKER_06: I mean, these are big time schools.
- 31:27SPEAKER_06: You're not playing these uh these lower division schools anymore.
- 31:30SPEAKER_06: So get ready.
- 31:30SPEAKER_05: With fans with expectations now, too.
- 31:32SPEAKER_05: So it's it's it's although there's still a lot expected of this team to go going forward.
- 31:37SPEAKER_05: So it's just there's a lot coming, and but I do believe this, these guys are ready for it.
- 31:40SPEAKER_05: I'm not I'm not saying it's it's it's uh it's a bad thing.
- 31:43SPEAKER_05: I'm just no it's uh it's uh that they definitely have some shoes to fill.
- 31:47SPEAKER_05: And I I just I I think they're up for the challenge, and I hope they're up for the challenge.
- 31:50SPEAKER_06: And with fans, too.
- 31:51SPEAKER_06: It's gonna be good for these guys to actually get into the USA to have probably what is gonna be 100% capacity by that time.
- 31:59SPEAKER_06: 100 with how sports are progressing these days.
- 32:01SPEAKER_06: So uh, you know, uh you feel good for them because they're gonna feel the real impact of what Texas Tech and the fan base brings to uh the the games.
- 32:10SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 32:10SPEAKER_05: I'm really excited for them to see a packed USA, just the environment that is, and what our students bring and what Lubbock brings.
- 32:16SPEAKER_05: It's just it's a unique place that's really turning into this really tough place to play because everyone there is so hyped and loved as a team.
- 32:24SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 32:25SPEAKER_06: And you know who is gonna miss that is Chandler Jacobs.
- 32:29SPEAKER_06: Chandler Jacobs uh kind of uh uh just a weird situation overall.
- 32:36SPEAKER_06: Uh originally committed to Texas Tech to play.
- 32:39SPEAKER_06: He was one of the first guys after Mark Adams got hired to commit to the program.
- 32:45SPEAKER_06: Uh a uh Division II guy came from Dallas Baptist.
- 32:49SPEAKER_06: Um, he is now going to switch commitments to Colorado State and play for them instead of coming to Lubbock and playing for Texas Tech.
- 32:58SPEAKER_06: Um, really, this isn't a bad thing in my eyes.
- 33:02SPEAKER_06: Uh he he's a good player.
- 33:04SPEAKER_06: I'm not gonna like I'm not gonna do that thing that sports fans do when team when players leave their team and we don't want him anyway.
- 33:11SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we didn't want him anyway, you know.
- 33:13SPEAKER_06: He wasn't that good.
- 33:14SPEAKER_06: Division two, what are you talking about?
- 33:16SPEAKER_06: No, I'm not gonna do that.
- 33:17SPEAKER_06: He's he's a good player, he's a he's a really skilled guy, he has experience.
- 33:22SPEAKER_06: Um, he he wasn't gonna get the playing time that he wanted, and that's basically what it came down to.
- 33:27SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, we signed a a good amount of guards after he committed, and um, you know, that's nobody's fault.
- 33:34SPEAKER_06: The only fault is that the timing of when we can sign players for the transfer, just the state of college basketball is at fault right now.
- 33:43SPEAKER_06: So um nothing against the guy, you know.
- 33:45SPEAKER_06: If you want to go and start for a lower tier program and get your 25 points a game, fantastic.
- 33:51SPEAKER_06: Go do it, man.
- 33:52SPEAKER_06: Yeah, if if if you're not 100% convinced on and you don't want the challenge really of what is coming to you, that's fine too.
- 34:02SPEAKER_06: You know, I I I I agree, you know, go go get them, go get him, man.
- 34:06SPEAKER_05: I kind of think the guy's hunting minutes.
- 34:08SPEAKER_05: Um, like you were saying, we're adding all these guards, some guys that look like they're gonna be starters, perhaps.
- 34:13SPEAKER_05: So I can understand the concern there.
- 34:16SPEAKER_05: My only I don't blame the kid for looking for an opportunity to where he can get more minutes and perhaps get more post-college attention.
- 34:23SPEAKER_05: My only problem is this is like you you commit to a school and then you pull out like that.
- 34:29SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's kind of like the old school, you're not gonna stick with your word there, but I know that's kind of old school, like well and apparently he's a bygone pass.
- 34:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and apparently he kind of kept the uh Texas Tech coaching staff kind of in the dark about the whole thing.
- 34:42SPEAKER_06: So that's not cool.
- 34:43SPEAKER_06: That's you know, you you're kind of burning a bridge there, which is never a good idea.
- 34:48SPEAKER_06: Uh in all of college sports, you never want to be the guy who's just not approaching it the right way.
- 34:54SPEAKER_05: You're you're a young man, I know you're gonna make mistakes, but professionalism is appreciated at any point in your life, especially now that you're becoming a a young man.
- 35:03SPEAKER_05: So just stick into your word, talking to the guys that were going to give you a chance.
- 35:07SPEAKER_05: It's just it's not a good look, and hopefully it's just an experience you learn from.
- 35:11SPEAKER_05: And I do wish him the best at Colorado State in the mountain west.
- 35:14SPEAKER_05: Maybe they can go make some noise, but yeah, it's just it's a shame that it went about that way.
- 35:19SPEAKER_05: But uh, looks like we got some good guards in the in the locker room anyway.
- 35:22SPEAKER_06: Yeah, there's nothing to worry about from a Texas Tech fans perspective, truly.
- 35:26SPEAKER_06: Um, we have a lot of good guards coming in, Malik Wilson, Adonis Harms, Davion Warren, Siddhar Calhoun, and we have Clarence Dolney coming back who's probably you know looking at a a competing for a starting spot.
- 35:40SPEAKER_06: So uh a guy that knows the program and everything like that.
- 35:43SPEAKER_06: So uh we're gonna be fine.
- 35:45SPEAKER_06: Uh losing this guy isn't a big deal.
- 35:47SPEAKER_06: Uh, I wouldn't get too hung up on him, you know, going to a different program.
- 35:51SPEAKER_06: It's just kind of the nature of college basketball right now.
- 35:53SPEAKER_05: So college basketball's the wild west right now, man.
- 35:56SPEAKER_06: Yeah, man.
- 35:56SPEAKER_06: Guys, guys get somebody gets in a guy's ear, and then you know, it could be over from there.
- 36:02SPEAKER_06: So uh I again I'm I don't have any beef with this guy.
- 36:06SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 36:06SPEAKER_06: Same with me.
- 36:07SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 36:08SPEAKER_06: So let's move on to uh Texas Tech men's golf.
- 36:12SPEAKER_06: Uh unfortunately, but fortunately, uh, you know, we advanced to the NCA championships.
- 36:17SPEAKER_06: We were one of the top teams in the entire nation.
- 36:20SPEAKER_06: Uh, we did fall a little short, we finished 11th overall, but we had a really good showing and we really showed out um with this team.
- 36:29SPEAKER_06: Had we were actually leading after round one of the entire championships, and then a sluggish day two kind of really brought us down, and we just couldn't recover from there on.
- 36:39SPEAKER_06: So uh TTU Men's golf, we're proud of you.
- 36:42SPEAKER_06: Uh just a tough, tough end of the season.
- 36:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it was looking like a comeback story there.
- 36:47SPEAKER_05: Uh, we were kind of skidding out a bit, and then we made this huge comeback here in the national championship, making the national championship and having that phenomenal first day.
- 36:55SPEAKER_05: But you know, it was a great season.
- 36:58SPEAKER_05: You know, you you're gonna hang your head on that finish now.
- 37:01SPEAKER_05: It's just we just be proud of what you've done, and there's always next year.
- 37:05SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 37:06SPEAKER_06: And our boy, the Swedish fish himself, Ludwig Aberg, was named a first team All-American after his performance.
- 37:13SPEAKER_06: He was, I think he finished top eight overall in terms of individuals for this uh uh NCAA championship.
- 37:20SPEAKER_06: So, man, the Swedish fish himself continues to be the best.
- 37:26SPEAKER_05: What an impressive feat! What an accomplishment.
- 37:28SPEAKER_05: Our favorites, our favorite Swede.
- 37:30SPEAKER_05: Uh, do we know if he's coming back next year?
- 37:32SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 37:33SPEAKER_06: There's been no word um on if he's coming back or not.
- 37:36SPEAKER_06: I know he's only a sophomore, so uh he could potentially come back, or you know, he could just try his luck with the pros, which he I, you know.
- 37:43SPEAKER_06: Again, we've said this with Mac McClung, we've said this with Terrence Shannon.
- 37:47SPEAKER_06: Go do you, man.
- 37:49SPEAKER_06: We're we're gonna support you either way.
- 37:50SPEAKER_06: You have brought only good stuff to this university to Texas Tech.
- 37:54SPEAKER_06: You have represented us with the utmost class and respect.
- 37:57SPEAKER_06: So shouts out Ludvig.
- 37:59SPEAKER_06: Do what you need to do, brother.
- 38:00SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, man.
- 38:01SPEAKER_05: It'll always be a red raider.
- 38:03SPEAKER_06: Yes, absolutely.
- 38:05SPEAKER_06: But we are gonna get to the meat of this episode.
- 38:08SPEAKER_06: This is gonna be a long episode.
- 38:09SPEAKER_06: We apologize for everybody hearing uh that don't well.
- 38:14SPEAKER_06: If you're if you're listening right now, you actually are kind of intrigued.
- 38:17SPEAKER_06: So we're not apologizing.
- 38:19SPEAKER_06: The offseason's got some fun, different stuff.
- 38:21SPEAKER_06: It does, and we I had this idea when I saw uh just a recent uh just scrolling through Twitter, and then you see something about Coach Beard, and you're like, okay, I hate that guy.
- 38:33SPEAKER_06: You're you're like, you're like, God, that guy just boils my blood, man.
- 38:39SPEAKER_06: I just I I just really get upset when I see something about Chris Beard now.
- 38:43SPEAKER_06: So I wanted to kind of run through our top five and and really what we think the consensus is, and we could be wrong, we're just two people.
- 38:52SPEAKER_06: We both are kind of young in the grand scheme of things.
- 38:56SPEAKER_06: We have we went into tech in 2014 and we've been diehard since then, but we realize that people have been fans of Texas Tech for much longer than we have.
- 39:06SPEAKER_06: So if we miss a guy here, we apologize.
- 39:08SPEAKER_06: But we are doing our top five most hated sports figures by Texas Tech fans.
- 39:15SPEAKER_06: So Tristan, did you do we want to start?
- 39:18SPEAKER_06: We want to start at five, right?
- 39:19SPEAKER_06: Yeah, let's start with the least heated, yeah.
- 39:22SPEAKER_06: The least heated of the bunch.
- 39:23SPEAKER_06: So you go ahead and give me your fifth.
- 39:26SPEAKER_05: All right, so my number five is the is the only active football coach in the Big 12 right now that's on this list.
- 39:33SPEAKER_05: Uh, I'm going with the coach first.
- 39:35SPEAKER_05: I'm going with Gary Patterson.
- 39:37SPEAKER_05: He is definitely like my least heated on this list amongst Red Raider fans.
- 39:41SPEAKER_05: But holy cow, this man has never has anything good to say about Texas Tech.
- 39:46SPEAKER_05: And every time he comes to the Jones ATT stadium, he's always saying how we're throwing frozen water bottles, throwing batteries, just talking, talking about us like we're we're like redneck trash.
- 39:56SPEAKER_05: And I really hate that.
- 39:58SPEAKER_05: It really grinds my gears because I'm so tired of this BS thing that Red Raider fans throw batteries and stuff.
- 40:06SPEAKER_05: You have no proof.
- 40:07SPEAKER_05: None of the there's all of this is nonsense.
- 40:10SPEAKER_05: It's just like one of those like things like oh, Raider Ash.
- 40:12SPEAKER_05: It's just like one of those things that kind of stuck with Texas Tech and just never really left us.
- 40:16SPEAKER_05: GPAT just exemplifies that.
- 40:18SPEAKER_05: Every time he talks about tech, it's always a negative thing.
- 40:22SPEAKER_06: You have always said this, and it's always been one of the best lines and best, I mean, just reasonings of things.
- 40:30SPEAKER_06: Who is carrying around batteries?
- 40:33SPEAKER_06: Who?
- 40:34SPEAKER_06: Who how are water bottles still frozen after tailgating for three, two, four hours?
- 40:41SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it's an ice cube, bro.
- 40:43SPEAKER_05: It's a frozen ice cube, just waiting for it to melt so I can drink this.
- 40:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and let me let me just rip these batteries out of my Game Boy and boombox, you know.
- 40:51SPEAKER_05: Like honestly, the only thing you have a batteries for anymore is is remotes, remotes, and uh fire alarms.
- 40:58SPEAKER_05: Like, and no one's just gonna yank the batteries out of that.
- 41:01SPEAKER_05: Like, that is not true.
- 41:02SPEAKER_06: No one's going to Walgreens buying a 12-pack of D batteries to throw at your face, Gary.
- 41:08SPEAKER_06: It's just not happening.
- 41:10SPEAKER_06: Uh Gary, Gary wasn't on my top five.
- 41:13SPEAKER_06: He was on my honorable mentions, so I do I uh we're starting off good because I was afraid we were gonna have equal of everything.
- 41:19SPEAKER_06: So um, no, Gary Patterson was a great choice.
- 41:23SPEAKER_06: Of all the current Big 12 coaches, I would say I hate Gary Patterson probably the most.
- 41:28SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, we'll see how uh we'll see how old Sark does at Texas, but um you know you can't hate Lincoln Raleigh because he he was Texas Tech guy, you know.
- 41:37SPEAKER_05: Well, I don't really hate any of the coaches of the Big Told.
- 41:39SPEAKER_05: They don't just sit there and poop on Texas Tech.
- 41:41SPEAKER_05: Like, why would they?
- 41:42SPEAKER_05: It's just competition, you know.
- 41:44SPEAKER_05: Like G Pad takes it makes it personal.
- 41:46SPEAKER_05: So that's that's my that's my thing with it.
- 41:49SPEAKER_06: It's true.
- 41:50SPEAKER_06: I understand.
- 41:51SPEAKER_06: My fifth uh to start off was Tommy Tumberville.
- 41:55SPEAKER_06: Um yeah, number five.
- 41:57SPEAKER_06: Uh Tommy Tumberville, uh, everybody knows left us in the dust uh after the whole debacle with Michael Each, which I'm sure we'll get to later on.
- 42:08SPEAKER_06: Um Tommy Tumberville uh is my number five most hated because he's just not welcome in Lubbock at all anymore because he basically did not give us a good chance uh and had some good seasons here, so that's why he's number five.
- 42:26SPEAKER_06: But uh basically skipping out on recruiting trips and basically leaving us in the dust with no nothing to fall back on.
- 42:34SPEAKER_06: So uh he's just the worst.
- 42:36SPEAKER_06: He just he said a lot of bad things about the city of Lubbock and the people of Lubbock, uh, which is never a good idea for any former coach of a program.
- 42:46SPEAKER_06: He has completely burned that bridge, and uh, you know, I just I just have a lot of disdain for the guy.
- 42:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, T Tup, I'm glad you made T Tup your fifth because he's my fourth.
- 42:55SPEAKER_05: So we can just go ahead and hit my fourth there.
- 42:57SPEAKER_05: And I yeah, there you go.
- 42:58SPEAKER_05: They no one in Lubbock likes the guy.
- 43:00SPEAKER_05: And I think probably what what is like the worst part about his tainted legacy is you know, he kept he compared the city of Lubbock to Iraq.
- 43:08SPEAKER_05: Um and he he just ditched like jumped out of a window from a recruiting uh dinner.
- 43:13SPEAKER_05: So the guy the guy has no sense of professionalism whatsoever.
- 43:18SPEAKER_05: Uh the guy just seemed I guess once he got like once he got fired from Auburn, he just had was just jaded from here on.
- 43:24SPEAKER_05: Because I really don't think he just left tech.
- 43:28SPEAKER_05: I think there was all in the in that black department, there was a lot of tense feelings between him feeling the shoes of a legend and him not like living up to that, and him obviously just not liking Lubbock or Texas Tech.
- 43:41SPEAKER_05: So I because Cincinnati is not an upgrade.
- 43:45SPEAKER_05: I mean, no, no, no, no bad mouth to them at all.
- 43:47SPEAKER_05: Here's the thing.
- 43:48SPEAKER_05: It's not like he got hired away.
- 43:50SPEAKER_06: Yeah, here's the thing you can dislike Lovbock, no one's expecting you like to just it embrace the city that that a lot of other good people have done.
- 44:00SPEAKER_06: And just really, you know, just love West Texas.
- 44:03SPEAKER_06: It's it's not for everybody.
- 44:04SPEAKER_06: We understand that.
- 44:05SPEAKER_06: The thing is, you can be like Tubby Smith.
- 44:08SPEAKER_06: You know, you can still be respectful to the university, to the people of Lubbock, and then make your way out.
- 44:16SPEAKER_06: You know, Tubby Smith is not disliked here.
- 44:20SPEAKER_06: I don't think at all.
- 44:21SPEAKER_06: I think he brought us from a bottom feeder to you know mid-tier.
- 44:26SPEAKER_06: Tournament team.
- 44:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we even made a tournament with Tubby Smith.
- 44:28SPEAKER_06: So you could have been like a Tubby Smith.
- 44:30SPEAKER_06: Instead, you completely bailed, and just you know, you're just the worst.
- 44:34SPEAKER_06: Tubby or Tommy Tupperville is just the worst.
- 44:37SPEAKER_05: Just like any way you could have gone about things in the worst possible way he did.
- 44:41SPEAKER_05: So that that's that's why.
- 44:42SPEAKER_05: And he had some decent seasons here.
- 44:44SPEAKER_05: So he wasn't gonna be hated if he just left.
- 44:46SPEAKER_05: It's just the way he he went about things.
- 44:49SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 44:50SPEAKER_06: So that was your number four, was Tommy Tupperville.
- 44:53SPEAKER_06: It was okay.
- 44:54SPEAKER_06: So my number four is Marcus Smart, and the people may know, uh, obviously, well, the people will know, obviously, Marcus Smart, Oklahoma State basketball guard, uh famous for no, you're fine, famous for getting in a fight with one of our fans.
- 45:14SPEAKER_06: But Marcus Smart's gonna be forever hated in Lubbock because you fought one of our fans.
- 45:17SPEAKER_06: That's just the the end of it.
- 45:19SPEAKER_06: That's it.
- 45:20SPEAKER_06: So uh you go in and basically with our rowdy and rompous crowd, uh, and this was even pre when we were good.
- 45:29SPEAKER_06: So um, you know, Marcus Smart's always gonna be hated in in the city of Lubbock and for Texas Tech.
- 45:35SPEAKER_06: It just it wasn't a good look for both sides, I guess.
- 45:38SPEAKER_06: Yeah, but you know, you can't fight a fan.
- 45:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah, obviously, I hope that fan didn't say what he was accused of.
- 45:43SPEAKER_05: That's abhorrent.
- 45:44SPEAKER_05: Um, exactly.
- 45:45SPEAKER_05: Uh what a crappy situation, and just you gotta learn how to control your emotions as an athlete.
- 45:50SPEAKER_05: You're you're getting shouted bad words all the time, no matter where you are.
- 45:54SPEAKER_05: All the time, you are getting heckled all the time.
- 45:57SPEAKER_05: And you're probably just really frustrated with the game, and you're just you just in a moment of weakness, you lashed out at a fan.
- 46:03SPEAKER_05: You just can't do that.
- 46:04SPEAKER_05: So no matter no matter what, that's just it's it's not it's not a good look.
- 46:08SPEAKER_05: And I just and obviously it's not it's not a great look for the fan to be in that position either, but at the same time, bro, you need to just go in the locker room, yeah.
- 46:16SPEAKER_06: Or just it just don't even listen.
- 46:19SPEAKER_06: Yeah, don't even listen, man.
- 46:20SPEAKER_06: So Marcus Smart's my number four.
- 46:23SPEAKER_06: Your number three is all right.
- 46:27SPEAKER_05: So this is where now we're getting into like the really we're in the we're in the furnace.
- 46:31SPEAKER_06: We're in the nitty-gritty.
- 46:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we are we are in the oh, I hate that guy.
- 46:35SPEAKER_05: My number three is Baker Mayfield.
- 46:37SPEAKER_06: Um, that is also my number three.
- 46:40SPEAKER_05: Perfect.
- 46:41SPEAKER_05: He is by far the most hated player, in my opinion, because not only you know, obviously what went down, he was at Texas Tech and then left us for a rival in conference, not great at all, and obviously comes back and beats us every time, wins Big 12 championships, wins Heisman trophies.
- 46:57SPEAKER_05: And but what really stands out to me is that we still despise him, you know, and it's just even in the NFL, I want him to lose every single game.
- 47:05SPEAKER_05: Um, it just I it's kind of like you know, Trey Young is obviously a dynamic to this, you know.
- 47:11SPEAKER_05: Like he was he was he was he was supposed to go to tech in quotation marks, but yeah, we give him a hard time in the games, but I don't hate the guy, you know.
- 47:18SPEAKER_05: I'm fine with him doing fine in the NBA.
- 47:20SPEAKER_05: He seems like a decent dude, you know, he's a fun player, no begotten will to that.
- 47:24SPEAKER_05: But like Baker Mayfield's like a whole nother deal.
- 47:26SPEAKER_05: That guy was obviously just a whole personality in himself, you know.
- 47:29SPEAKER_05: He may being hated by tech his personality, too.
- 47:32SPEAKER_05: He really fed off it.
- 47:34SPEAKER_05: And we're just never gonna forgive him, and we're always gonna hate him until he dies.
- 47:39SPEAKER_06: Here's my thing with Baker Mayfield.
- 47:41SPEAKER_06: Number one, uh, personality.
- 47:44SPEAKER_06: He's got a terrible personality.
- 47:45SPEAKER_06: He talks a lot of crap on the field.
- 47:47SPEAKER_06: No fan outside of your own fan base likes that.
- 47:51SPEAKER_06: So obviously you're gonna be hated.
- 47:53SPEAKER_06: Number two, he's got number two, he's got a very punchable face.
- 47:56SPEAKER_06: Everything about everything about Baker Mayfield just screams, I am a douchebag.
- 48:01SPEAKER_06: Yeah, uh, so that's number two.
- 48:04SPEAKER_06: Number three, he always beat us, he kept beating us.
- 48:06SPEAKER_06: So, of course, we're gonna be upset with it.
- 48:08SPEAKER_06: He had the better team, it's Oklahoma, they're gonna have the better team.
- 48:12SPEAKER_06: We were in very dark times for football during the Kingsbury era, you know, it's it's neither here nor there.
- 48:18SPEAKER_06: He had a very much better team, and he and and the thing is, we still we can talk a little crap to Baker Mayfield because we had Patrick Mahomes now.
- 48:27SPEAKER_06: So in the NFL, we're like Mahomes is better anyway.
- 48:30SPEAKER_06: We knew this whole time, Baker.
- 48:33SPEAKER_05: I mean, Patrick Mahomes was always better, he was just on the worst team, and if any honest fan would know that, yeah.
- 48:39SPEAKER_05: So it and that that's that that's just the whole thing.
- 48:42SPEAKER_05: You leave it's one thing to leave your school because you're unhappy with the circumstance, it's another thing to go to an uh an in conference rival.
- 48:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's that's just that takes a certain kind of ego, you know.
- 48:53SPEAKER_05: So um obviously, no no love loss with Baker Mayfield.
- 48:58SPEAKER_05: So he's definitely a good number three.
- 48:59SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 49:00SPEAKER_06: So keep going.
- 49:01SPEAKER_06: Go go your number two because Baker was also my number three.
- 49:05SPEAKER_05: All right, so number two, not not a football player, not a coach, it's Craig James.
- 49:11SPEAKER_06: Yep, absolutely.
- 49:12SPEAKER_06: That was he your number two, too.
- 49:14SPEAKER_06: Oh well, I had a number, I had a tie for number two.
- 49:16SPEAKER_06: I had Craig and Adam James.
- 49:18SPEAKER_06: Those are okay.
- 49:19SPEAKER_05: All right, so the it's it this fits.
- 49:21SPEAKER_05: Yes, it's that fit.
- 49:23SPEAKER_05: This man single-handedly, uh, and a lot of people tell you with along with Kent Hance, uh, formal chant former chancellor for Texas Tech, ruined Texas Tech football.
- 49:34SPEAKER_05: And it's kind of hard to disagree because they he was the only reason why Mike Leach was fired, and you can't blame Mike Leach for not coming out and apologizing, you know, for not coming out and saying, like, oh, I guess I did something wrong, because he was adamant he did nothing wrong.
- 49:54SPEAKER_05: And I'm definitely inclined to believe Mac Mike Leach over a player who wasn't getting the game time he wanted.
- 49:59SPEAKER_05: So it it definitely sounds like it was a player using daddy's reputation, daddy's media presence, because even I was just reading an article about it today, and Craig James like immediately did an interview about all of it, you know, ripping ripping Mike Leach and Texas Tech up and down about it.
- 50:15SPEAKER_05: And and then he obviously wasn't giving a fair shake with tech of of getting suspended or getting fired.
- 50:21SPEAKER_05: He just went straight to fired instead of suspended, and just what a crappy situation that you're just so selfish in that, and you just think you're the center of the world that you have to ruin a football program because daddy's daddy's little boy isn't getting the playing time he wants.
- 50:35SPEAKER_06: Well, here, disclaimer we were not here during this whole debacle.
- 50:39SPEAKER_06: We were not Texas, I mean, not even probably Texas Tech fans.
- 50:42SPEAKER_06: We were probably eighth grade or whatever, where you know we still cared about sports, but collegiate sports, we just didn't have the fandom that we do now for Texas Tech.
- 50:52SPEAKER_06: So we weren't here during the everyday.
- 50:54SPEAKER_06: I'm sure more people could tell you more information about the whole thing.
- 50:59SPEAKER_06: But what I know from the whole situation is that Adam James is a little wuss and that he did not play, and that he had a concussion during that whole deal, and Mike Leach put him in a training area who he claimed was a shed uh and had AC head, uh bikes had something where he could take it easy because my man was concussed, uh, and he completely turned that because he wasn't getting playing time, and he had the daddy's reputation of Craig James being an ESPN guy.
- 51:33SPEAKER_06: So um, yeah, he's the worst.
- 51:35SPEAKER_06: Everybody in Lubbock will know the name Craig James or Adam James, just uh real pieces of crap people that got Mike Leech fired and uh really started to derail the original start of the derailment of Texas Tech football.
- 51:52SPEAKER_05: We were really uh we were really really turning into a power in the Big 12 South, too.
- 51:56SPEAKER_05: We were consistently really good, we were consistently a threat.
- 51:58SPEAKER_05: We were in talks of being a the Big 12 South champion nearly every year, and and it just to watch two or arguably three people just ruin it like that is it's really disappointing to see.
- 52:11SPEAKER_05: Um, I'm not saying that Mike Leach was an angel and obviously has his controversies with tech, like how people are saying that he'll always looking for his next step in his college in his coaching career and and all that, which is obviously up for debate, but I'm just saying right now, Craig James, definitely number two for me because he he was really what spurred the the the collapse of tech football in the modern era, and I and I'm not gonna I'm not gonna accuse Ken Hans of anything.
- 52:39SPEAKER_05: I mean, he's he's represented tech otherwise in a great way, you know, he's he's he's been has had his support behind the school the whole time, but um it just it's a really complicated situation, and not a single fan was happy about it.
- 52:52SPEAKER_06: No, absolutely, and if uh like I said earlier, if you mention the name Craig or Adam James, it's gonna get a scuff or a uh from Texas Tech fans, no matter where you're tech fans, just just college sports fans know.
- 53:06SPEAKER_05: And it it kind of derailed his career too.
- 53:08SPEAKER_05: I mean, Greg James has been pretty much a nobody since then, since since uh you know a few years after that.
- 53:14SPEAKER_05: So it just it kind of was just a shady tornado.
- 53:17SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it sucked, completely sucked, and every tech fan knows it.
- 53:21SPEAKER_06: So let's move on to the most hated.
- 53:24SPEAKER_06: And I had a little issue, I didn't have an issue with this.
- 53:28SPEAKER_06: I it was hard for me because I think about five years down the line, and I'm like, am I really gonna hate this guy more than Craig or Adam James?
- 53:37SPEAKER_06: But you know, right now the recency bias is gonna kick in, and I I'm not gonna apologize for it.
- 53:43SPEAKER_06: Number one for both you and me is Chris Beard.
- 53:46SPEAKER_06: It's um he's the worst.
- 53:49SPEAKER_06: He's the worst.
- 53:51SPEAKER_06: He is the worst person ever.
- 53:54SPEAKER_06: Um you put your uh quote unquote heart and soul into a program, you give everything that you can, quote unquote, to a program, you keep the fan base involved, you basically lie to the fan base for what four years, five years, uh saying we're gonna get to Monday night, this is home, everything here or there, uh, and then you leave for our biggest rival, and it's not cool, it's never been cool, in no situation has that been cool.
- 54:33SPEAKER_06: Um and you are the worst.
- 54:35SPEAKER_06: You are the worst person in my eyes, and my blood boils when I think about you.
- 54:43SPEAKER_06: So, right now, Chris Beard for me is number one.
- 54:45SPEAKER_05: I mean, this the statement that can wrap all this up into why he's number one is he did this the unthinkable.
- 54:51SPEAKER_05: He did literally everything possible to make you the most hated man in Lubbock.
- 54:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 54:59SPEAKER_05: You know, you the relieving out of nowhere, backdoor deal that may be shadier than we even know at a McDonald's stop to just, you know, this this place that you you spoke so highly of to go to our biggest rival and just and then immediately start pooping on it, you know.
- 55:16SPEAKER_05: And it's just I I don't think I hate anyone more than in sports, and I don't know if it's particularly close.
- 55:23SPEAKER_05: Like the players I can get over, you know, it's just like it's young men doing what they think is best for them, but with coaches, you're a grown man, you know, and here you are just being the most unprofessional, being the most low up character person possible.
- 55:36SPEAKER_05: And it's just what more can you say than he's a snake?
- 55:39SPEAKER_05: That's it, and faking it, yeah, faking it the whole time.
- 55:43SPEAKER_06: Faking your character for four or five years, and then just completely doing a 180 and doing what you did, uh, leaving for Austin.
- 55:52SPEAKER_06: People will say it's his it's his alma mater.
- 55:56SPEAKER_06: Well, you wouldn't you always want to go back to coach your alma mater?
- 55:59SPEAKER_06: No, it's not even about that, it's about how you approached the job at Texas Tech and then how you how you just dropped it and didn't say anything for five days about it, and now are all of a sudden all about UT.
- 56:15SPEAKER_06: I I hate the man, I really do.
- 56:18SPEAKER_06: I I wish and and you know we uh we as sports fans are crazy.
- 56:23SPEAKER_06: We are we're passionate, we uh give our all into each and every program that we support.
- 56:30SPEAKER_06: Um I I I hate this guy.
- 56:35SPEAKER_06: I hate this guy more than I think I've hated really anybody.
- 56:41SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, man.
- 56:42SPEAKER_05: It's just it's a guy that it hurts whenever it's a guy you believe in, a guy that represents something you love so much, you know.
- 56:49SPEAKER_05: Like you know, Texas Tech is a part of us, you know, and whenever you whenever you just do something to something we love so much like he did, it hurts really, really badly.
- 56:59SPEAKER_05: It's like it's like a breakup, you know.
- 57:00SPEAKER_05: And now she's now now now she's with your best friend, or you know, or the guy you hate the most, you know.
- 57:06SPEAKER_05: It's just yeah, it's it's a it's a really tough situation, uh emotionally for tech fans and for the players and for the staff, and like Kirby Hoke, you know, and just it's just it's just a the guy did literally anything he could to be the most hated guy at Texas Tech, and he's just gonna wear that like like well on he's gonna wear that with pride, which is so annoying, obviously.
- 57:27SPEAKER_06: His fake his fake pride that he has, yeah.
- 57:30SPEAKER_06: What he what who knows?
- 57:31SPEAKER_05: Who knows what his character is?
- 57:32SPEAKER_05: The guy's Play-Doh, obviously, dude.
- 57:34SPEAKER_06: He the guy's a snake, exactly.
- 57:36SPEAKER_06: He molds to whatever situation he's in.
- 57:39SPEAKER_05: So he's just a scheme, he's just a slimy used car salesman.
- 57:42SPEAKER_06: Yeah, exactly.
- 57:43SPEAKER_06: So number one, Chris Beard, number two for both of us was Craig slash Adam James for both of us, three was Baker Mayfield, four for you was Tommy Tubberville, mine was Marcus Smart, five was who Gary Patterson for you, five was Tommy Tubberville for me.
- 58:02SPEAKER_06: I also put Gary Patterson on my list.
- 58:05SPEAKER_06: I did put Trey Young just because our fans were so upset with Trey Young, and that is the most insane crowd I've seen just hating a guy for really and truly just not choosing your school.
- 58:21SPEAKER_06: I mean, you have your dad as a famous tech alum and famous basketball player that played at tech, and you come to a school that's also in the Big 12, so you play against us, and uh Trey Young was hated, he was absolutely hated when he came to tech that one year.
- 58:38SPEAKER_05: The guy, the guy went to high school in Norman.
- 58:40SPEAKER_05: That's all it was at the end of the day.
- 58:41SPEAKER_05: He was right there with family.
- 58:43SPEAKER_05: I kind of get it.
- 58:44SPEAKER_05: Um, and and he was probably really, really close to going to tech.
- 58:48SPEAKER_05: So I just it was probably a tough decision for him.
- 58:50SPEAKER_05: He seems like a decent guy.
- 58:52SPEAKER_05: I'm really not gonna hate him for it.
- 58:53SPEAKER_05: And like I said, even with even with Baker, he's not on the same level as like Beard or Craig James because I just kind of separate the young men from the grown-ass dudes.
- 59:01SPEAKER_06: So I get you, I get you from that perspective.
- 59:04SPEAKER_06: Uh, I I can't say that I didn't really, really enjoy the uh the blown-up picture of Trey Young in a Texas Tech shirt as a child.
- 59:12SPEAKER_06: It was hilarious.
- 59:14SPEAKER_06: It's the best thing you can bring to kind of uh you know get in a guy's head or whatever.
- 59:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, I mean the guy is you know, we've been showing some love back every once in a while.
- 59:23SPEAKER_05: He gives a lot of credit to the Big 12.
- 59:24SPEAKER_05: You know, he's showing some tech some love, how it's a tough place to be, and you know, and it's just you know, is he he's probably second a tech fan because his dad, so yeah, it's just it is what it is.
- 59:35SPEAKER_05: You know, I don't hate the guy for it.
- 59:36SPEAKER_06: It's just there's also the factor of him and the whole Luca thing, because a lot of tech fans are Maverick fans, and you know, the whole Luca Trey Young debate, you know, who's gonna be better or whatever.
- 59:48SPEAKER_06: So that always has like Mavericks fans doubling down on Trey.
- 59:51SPEAKER_06: I like Trey Young, I think he's a good dude, I think he's fun, I think he's really exciting to watch.
- 59:56SPEAKER_06: Yes, he hunts fouls, and he's one of those guys that's a little frustrating to watch as an NBA fan, but Trey Young, he's he's I couldn't put him in the top five.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_06: I just thought from that game was we really let him have it for sure.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_05: So I'm definitely this is definitely back on the listeners.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_05: Who do we miss?
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_05: What'd you think?
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_05: Um, who gets y'all's blood boiling as a Texas Tech fan?
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_05: As a fans, we're mad quite often here in the public.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_06: So we get rowdy, we get rowdy.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_06: We're not apologize.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_05: We're either we're either on cloud nine or in the depths of the boiler room.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_05: So that's just who we are.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_06: That's just who we are.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_06: Um, I did also put I for the older I wasn't there during the time.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_06: Uh Cole McCoy was probably a really hated guy at Texas Tech when he was at UT.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_06: Uh, I also have a personal beef.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_06: There's a couple guys, uh, both basketball from when we were there.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_06: Um, Alex Robinson, guard for TCU, uh, talked a lot of mess to the student section and then lost uh in Lubbock.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_06: I have a personal beef with him, and I also have a personal beef with uh, and this is all just me.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_06: This doesn't have to be everybody.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_06: I'm sure this was everybody at the time, though.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_06: Wesley Harris from West Virginia, when we rushed the court after beating their ass, and he was accused of trying to punch a Texas Tech fan.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_06: That freaking guy, man, like I'll always have a beef with him and Alex Robbins.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_06: Alex Robinson also has a very punchable face.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_05: So classic cases of players just being frustrated with the situation and wanting to take it out on just an unrelated thing, you know.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_05: Well, we we just beat, I think West Virginia was in the top 15 when we upset them.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_05: And so obviously, we're this new budding program that doesn't win those games very often.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_05: We're gonna rush the court, dude.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're going to.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and it's it's funny that you bring up players that you know we're talking about to the student section because you and I, uh during our early time with college, we were we were very intimate with the game because the student section was by no means packed, so we were we were always in the very front, so we were in we were in it, you know, we were with the players.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_05: So that that that the two great choices that in an honorable mention, but that's just funny.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_06: Yeah, just gotta throw them in there for the personal reasons.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_06: Some people may know, some people may not know, but that's it.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_06: I thought that was a fun segment, man.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_06: Get get the five most hated tech people out there.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_05: I guess that sets it up to where we had to do like top five most loved people of Texas Tech.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_06: We will we'll do that eventually.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_06: There's a long offseason ahead of us until football starts.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_06: That'll be much, that'll be a much tougher list.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that will be.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_06: That will be.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_06: That'll be cutting some people that we do not want to cut off.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_06: So yeah, uh, we'll have a lot of honorable mentions for that.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I did have a shout out.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_06: I had one shout-out before we get to song of the week.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_06: Uh, shout out to our buddy Clay Jakes and his Maryland Terrapins for losing to the Virginia Cavaliers in the collegiate lacrosse championship 17 to 16.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_06: Um, it's an inside joke between none of y'all will understand right now.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_06: But um, Tristan played lacrosse, our buddy Clay played lacrosse, our buddy Logan played lacrosse.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_06: Um Texas Tech.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_06: For Texas Tech, not for Maryland and not for Virginia.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_06: Um, but he's been beefing with us all week about mentioning the collegiate lacrosse because we tweeted one thing, one thing about the NBA.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_06: And so he was he was like, talking tech won't talk about lacrosse.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_06: Well, here you go, Clay.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_06: I'm talking about lacrosse.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_06: So here you go.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_06: Shout out Virginia Cavaliers.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_06: I still don't like them, but uh, your Maryland Terrapins didn't win, so shouts out Clay.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_05: Okay, I didn't see that coming.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_05: I don't even know how to respond to any of this.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_06: I had to say it, I had to say it.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_05: Let's go a bit go Texas Tech Lacrosse, boys.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_06: Go Texas Tech LaCrosse.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_06: That's the best lacrosse program there is without question, without any question.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_06: So shouts out to them.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_06: All right, song of the week.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_06: We're gonna end off this longer episode.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_06: Tristan, give me your oh, and we're doing a little different, yeah.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_06: We're doing it different, bro.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_06: We're doing a little different for Song of the Week.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_06: I almost forgot our beautiful girlfriends, both of which uh gave, well, it started with your girlfriend Annie, who wanted to give her Song of the Week, and then you said, Okay, let's let the girls do Song of the Week this week.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_06: So my girlfriend Kristen also gave her song of the week.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_06: So, Tristan, what is Annie's song of the all right?
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_05: Today, today we're with we're on our feminine side.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_05: We're we're we're tossing the ladies some picks here.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_05: So uh I like the song though.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_05: It's it's gonna be a repeat artist.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_05: Uh Annie's favorite is Taylor Swift, she's a big Swiftie.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_05: Um, and we're gonna go with a bonus track on the newest album Evermore, which has turned into her favorite Taylor Swift album.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_05: And it definitely sounds like old school Taylor Swift, kind of the more country sort of songwriting zone that she was in that was still really good.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_05: Um, it's called Right Where You Left Me.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_05: It's a bonus track on the deluxe version of Evermore, and it's it's a great pop.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_05: You can definitely see it's a Taylor Swift song without question.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_01: Stay right where I know your take on this.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_06: What's Annie's take?
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_06: Does she like country or pop tailor more?
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_05: I don't know if she has a real preference.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_05: She would she her favorite era is definitely definitely these two folky albums she's released.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_06: Me and Annie agree on that.
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, which kind of would I in my opinion, I think that leans more towards the country zone than the it does.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_06: It's I mean it's more country than pop music, but it's just different overall.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_06: I think this is where I think this is where Taylor Swift thrives, is in this kind of stuff.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_05: But I do love the re-released fearless album.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_05: I think that's cool that she's taking her music back and uh redoing it for herself.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_06: Right on.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_06: Well, my girlfriend Kristen's song of the week, I told her about probably two hours ago to get me her song of the week.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_06: I will preface this by saying that she likes a little more.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_06: Um I I don't really know the way to describe it.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_06: She uh me and her just don't have the same exact music taste.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_06: You know, she likes a little pump up stuff, I like a little more low-key, kind of take it easy jams.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_06: Uh, but this one I haven't heard of.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_06: So um it is my shot by The Roots, featuring Buster Rhymes.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_06: The Roots, of course, being Jimmy Fallon's band.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_06: Um, it's on the uh Hamilton soundtrack.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_06: Uh and she did it because we were talking about tech baseball, and it's a pump up jam.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_06: It pushes you to do your best, and it's on her running playlist.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_06: So she wanted to do that one.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_06: That was my shot by the roots featuring Buster Rhymes.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_01: I said I'm not throwing away my shot.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_01: I said I'm not throwing away, it's going just like my country.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_01: I'm young stepping.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_01: I'm hungry, and I'm not throwing away my shot.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_01: I said I'm not throwing away my shot.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_05: All right, interesting.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_05: And quick quick spot on Kristen there.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_05: Did LSU make the postseason in baseball?
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_05: They did.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_06: They did, they barely made it, they barely made it.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_06: So they I was ready to talk a little mess.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_06: I know they're I mean, they're not we got basketball on them.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_06: Hey, they're not fantastic in baseball this year, so they barely made it.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_06: They'll probably get kicked out in round one.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_06: So uh we could talk a little mess.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_06: It's okay.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_06: It's okay.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_06: I've had a good time living here in Baton Rouge talking a little mess to LSU, especially since we beat them in basketball.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_06: It's been good.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_06: All right, man, take us home.

- 1:08:06SPEAKER_04: Uh wow.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_04: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_04: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_00: I love the game of basketball, but also love West Texas, and I love Steven and Tristan.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_00: So I'm extremely proud.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't know where we go from here.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm thinking I'm just gonna sit back down.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_00: It's just not getting any better than this.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_02: I just want to tell Steven and Tristan, thanks for coming out.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_03: The energy uh was really, really good in there today.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_03: Uh we fed off of it.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_03: I think it goes back and forth tremendous.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_03: Uh great job, and um, you know, just just proud of our guys for the way they responded.
