- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's happened everybody? This is to check o'daly. I
- 0:12Speaker 1: am Andrew de Checko, Eagles beat reporter for insidethebirds dot Com,
- 0:16Speaker 1: and I'm not going to spend a ton of time
- 0:17Speaker 1: talking about this, but I do want to touch on it.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Kevin Petullo has landed on his feet perry report from
- 0:25Speaker 1: NFL Networks Mike Garifolo. Patullo will become the past game
- 0:29Speaker 1: coordinator for the Miami Dolphins, working under Bobby Slowick, who
- 0:33Speaker 1: was newly appointed offensive coordinator. And also included in Garifolo's
- 0:38Speaker 1: report was that Patullo spoke to quote unquote multiple teams
- 0:42Speaker 1: regarding assistant roles and that part of his responsibilities will
- 0:46Speaker 1: be helping first year head coach Jeff Hafley with head
- 0:50Speaker 1: coaching responsibilities throughout the week and on game day. So
- 0:54Speaker 1: there is your Kevin Petullo news, and I think that
- 0:56Speaker 1: should dispel any notion that he was going to fade
- 1:01Speaker 1: into obscurity and that no team would touch him with
- 1:03Speaker 1: a ten foot pole. I think that also suggests that
- 1:07Speaker 1: coaches around the league, or at least all it takes
- 1:10Speaker 1: is one team, really are aware that the Eagles offensive
- 1:13Speaker 1: struggles last season were multi layered. I've talked at length
- 1:17Speaker 1: about that throughout the season. No, he did not perform
- 1:20Speaker 1: well in his role. In his first year as Eagles
- 1:22Speaker 1: offensive coordinator. The offense was twenty fourth in total offense
- 1:26Speaker 1: and towards the bottom tier of the league in other categories.
- 1:30Speaker 1: And I thought that play calling left a lot to
- 1:33Speaker 1: be desired. But it's a little naive to think that
- 1:37Speaker 1: he was the sole reason or the primary culprit for
- 1:41Speaker 1: things not going according to plan for the Eagles. And
- 1:45Speaker 1: I think that there was a lot of venom that
- 1:48Speaker 1: was spewed at the direction of Kevin Patulo that crossed
- 1:51Speaker 1: the line of excess, and I thought in some cases
- 1:54Speaker 1: it was misguided. And I've sort of maintained that stance
- 1:58Speaker 1: throughout the season, gathering information throughout the year and just
- 2:03Speaker 1: you know, just watching the offense operate from afar. I mean,
- 2:07Speaker 1: it's a nuanced conversation, and it's so easy to point
- 2:11Speaker 1: the finger at one person and say he's the problem.
- 2:13Speaker 1: But when the offense has looked the same more or
- 2:16Speaker 1: less for a number of seasons, I think, I mean,
- 2:20Speaker 1: it's kind of hard to look at Patulo and say
- 2:23Speaker 1: he fell short. He was the reason why the train
- 2:26Speaker 1: went off the tracks, if you will, he brought he
- 2:29Speaker 1: came over to Philadelphia in twenty twenty one. Was the
- 2:33Speaker 1: pass game coordinator for the Eagles in that remarkable twenty
- 2:38Speaker 1: twenty two season that Jalen Hurts put on a show
- 2:42Speaker 1: in terms of throwing the football. Aj Brown finished with
- 2:46Speaker 1: four hundred and ninety six yards, Devonte Smith one thousand,
- 2:50Speaker 1: one hundred and ninety six receiving yards. Both of those
- 2:53Speaker 1: totals are career highs for those players. Dallas Goddard had
- 2:57Speaker 1: seven hundred and two yards receiving that year, and it
- 3:00Speaker 1: was just sort of a high flying offense that really
- 3:02Speaker 1: pushed the ball down the field. They didn't quite make
- 3:06Speaker 1: the mark in the Super Bowl, but that was a
- 3:09Speaker 1: part of that season, a part of Kevin Batullo's resume
- 3:12Speaker 1: that I think gets conveniently overlooked, and he was a
- 3:16Speaker 1: part of it. Jaywen went out there and executed, The
- 3:20Speaker 1: players went out there and executed. Shane Steichen was calling
- 3:24Speaker 1: the plays, but Kevin Bittula was a part of that
- 3:26Speaker 1: as the pass game coordinator. In twenty twenty three, the
- 3:29Speaker 1: Eagles had a top ten offense. Say what you will
- 3:31Speaker 1: about how it looked. But the facts of the matter.
- 3:33Speaker 1: The fact of the matter is they certainly had a
- 3:36Speaker 1: top ten offense under Brian Johnson with Kevin Patulo as
- 3:39Speaker 1: the pass game coordinator. And in twenty twenty four the
- 3:43Speaker 1: pass game did not look particularly well, but in fact
- 3:48Speaker 1: it was far far more underwhelming, I would say, than
- 3:54Speaker 1: the twenty twenty three season. But Kevin Batula was a
- 3:58Speaker 1: part of that as well. And when you look at
- 4:00Speaker 1: the twenty twenty four season, a lot of times I hear, yeah,
- 4:03Speaker 1: but the Steelers game, or the NFC Championship or the
- 4:06Speaker 1: Super Bowl, those were good passing performances. Yes, Kevin Petullo
- 4:11Speaker 1: was also a part of that. So while I'm not
- 4:13Speaker 1: by any means saying that he had a resume without
- 4:16Speaker 1: blemishes here in Philadelphia, I think a lot of the
- 4:19Speaker 1: scrutiny went to an extreme place, and I thought that
- 4:25Speaker 1: a lot of the criticism eventually morphed into abuse and
- 4:29Speaker 1: vandalism in the most extreme case, and I didn't think
- 4:32Speaker 1: that that was I don't think that was fair. I
- 4:34Speaker 1: think that's a disgrace. But it's nice to see that
- 4:37Speaker 1: Petullo landed on his feet. Is in a different situation
- 4:41Speaker 1: and if he performs well in that role with Miami.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Who knows, maybe he's best suit to be a pass
- 4:48Speaker 1: game coordinator. But nevertheless, I'm closing the chapter on the
- 4:51Speaker 1: Kevin Petullo story, and I wanted to make sure that
- 4:54Speaker 1: I brought everybody up to speed there now, keeping things
- 5:00Speaker 1: things fresh here. Looking at the Eagles roster and how
- 5:04Speaker 1: the Eagles might shape it in free agency in the draft.
- 5:07Speaker 1: A question was posted to me by my friend John
- 5:09Speaker 1: Kincaid on The Fanatic this morning, and I kind of
- 5:11Speaker 1: wanted to expand on it. How at least in my estimation,
- 5:17Speaker 1: I'm going to try to apply logic to best address
- 5:20Speaker 1: some of the areas of concern, whether it be through
- 5:22Speaker 1: free agency or the draft. And I think a lot
- 5:25Speaker 1: of it is going to be positioned dependent, and I'll
- 5:28Speaker 1: explain in terms of the offensive line, you could certainly
- 5:33Speaker 1: stand to add an interior player, maybe even a reserve tackle.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Let's not forget Brett Tooth and Fred Johnson'll be free agents.
- 5:40Speaker 1: It's unrealistic to expect the Eagles to address all of
- 5:43Speaker 1: their needs in the draft. They always have so many picks,
- 5:47Speaker 1: and so you have to strategize with how you're going
- 5:49Speaker 1: to approach free agency. When it comes to the offensive line,
- 5:53Speaker 1: I would be more inclined to add an experienced player
- 5:57Speaker 1: there in free agency. The first player who comes to mind,
- 6:00Speaker 1: and I'm not reporting anything, I'm sort of looking at familiarity,
- 6:03Speaker 1: cost and all. That would be Dalton Reisner, who was
- 6:06Speaker 1: a guard when Chris Cooper was with the Broncos, and
- 6:10Speaker 1: he was also part of Chris Cooper's offensive line group
- 6:14Speaker 1: that he oversaw when he was with the Vikings for
- 6:16Speaker 1: two seasons, So there's familiarity there. He has an idea
- 6:19Speaker 1: of how Cooper likes things coached up. The technique is
- 6:24Speaker 1: something he's going to be well versed in and it's
- 6:26Speaker 1: not going to be cost prohibitive by any stretch. And
- 6:30Speaker 1: so I think that the fact that he can play
- 6:32Speaker 1: left or right guard would make it appealing. And I think,
- 6:36Speaker 1: to a larger point, you want to bring in an
- 6:39Speaker 1: offensive lineman that has experienced because first and foremost, we
- 6:43Speaker 1: don't yet know how Chris Cooper will fare in terms
- 6:46Speaker 1: of player development. Versus the different approach with Jeff Stoutlin.
- 6:50Speaker 1: You felt comfortable with him drafting alignment on day one,
- 6:53Speaker 1: two or three, knowing that he was going to develop
- 6:57Speaker 1: that player and aid in helping them maximize their potential.
- 7:02Speaker 1: But given this scenario and that there's so much that's
- 7:06Speaker 1: unknown with Chris Cooper, I think that Eagles could stand
- 7:09Speaker 1: to add a player of some experience in free agency,
- 7:14Speaker 1: whether that's a Dalton Reisner. Ed Ingram's a player who
- 7:17Speaker 1: I find to be fascinating. I imagine he's going to
- 7:20Speaker 1: command upwards of ten million a year. He's twenty seven
- 7:23Speaker 1: years old. Was with Chris Cooper with the Vikings, didn't
- 7:27Speaker 1: perform well there, ends up getting traded to the Houston
- 7:30Speaker 1: Texans and last season puts together the best season of
- 7:33Speaker 1: his career and he was a right guard. But I
- 7:37Speaker 1: think when you're looking at from a price point perspective
- 7:41Speaker 1: and fit, those are two players that I would think
- 7:44Speaker 1: would be appealing. Now there's going to be other teams
- 7:46Speaker 1: who are going to be looking at those players as well,
- 7:50Speaker 1: and it could be their respective teams right now that
- 7:54Speaker 1: want to keep them in house. But those are just
- 7:56Speaker 1: two examples of players that I would look at because
- 7:59Speaker 1: I think you have to trend towards experience with the
- 8:03Speaker 1: offensive line because of the developmental piece. If you draft
- 8:06Speaker 1: a player early that you're counting on and you're not
- 8:10Speaker 1: sure about his development skills. Chris Cooper. I mean, it's
- 8:16Speaker 1: kind of hard to forecast them stepping in and playing
- 8:18Speaker 1: a prominent role for the team, and it just clouds
- 8:21Speaker 1: the picture a little bit from an offensive standpoint. Now,
- 8:25Speaker 1: edge rusher, for example, I think it would serve the
- 8:29Speaker 1: Eagles well to do whatever they can to retain Jaywin Phillips,
- 8:35Speaker 1: depending on what the financials dictate, right, because you certainly
- 8:39Speaker 1: can't afford to overspend to keep him in the building.
- 8:43Speaker 1: But you have j Looks Hunt, you have Noan Smith.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I don't know that relying on a day one or
- 8:48Speaker 1: a day two edge rusher is going to solve your problems.
- 8:52Speaker 1: It actually creates more questions because you don't quite know
- 8:57Speaker 1: what a young player is going to provide. It's more
- 8:59Speaker 1: of a project versus a player like Jalen Phillips, who
- 9:02Speaker 1: you already know is going to be able to provide
- 9:05Speaker 1: you a healthy amount of snaps. You already know that
- 9:08Speaker 1: he can be a player who will thrive in a
- 9:10Speaker 1: Vic Fangio defense. He's who Vic Vangio has a lot
- 9:14Speaker 1: of trust and confidence in, and you know that he
- 9:16Speaker 1: can headline that group. Maybe you take a player on
- 9:20Speaker 1: Day two or Day three to round out that group
- 9:22Speaker 1: and give you a player with developmental upside. But I
- 9:25Speaker 1: think it would serve the Eagles well if financials work out.
- 9:28Speaker 1: We don't quite know what he's going to command, especially
- 9:31Speaker 1: with the injuries that he's had in his career. He
- 9:33Speaker 1: could be a little bit all over the map, But
- 9:35Speaker 1: I think it would serve the Eagles wealth they're able
- 9:37Speaker 1: to make it work and bring Jalen Phillips back into
- 9:39Speaker 1: the fold. When it comes to safety, Red Blankenship will
- 9:44Speaker 1: be a free agent. And for all the great things
- 9:47Speaker 1: that Red Blankenship has done for Philadelphia, and he's been
- 9:50Speaker 1: lauded for his ability to serve as a traffic cop
- 9:54Speaker 1: back there, make sure everyone's aware of their assignments. What
- 9:57Speaker 1: he lacks in athleticism, he more than makes up for
- 9:59Speaker 1: with football intellect, physicality, toughness, and instincts. The way the
- 10:05Speaker 1: league is trending in the modern NFL, you have to
- 10:09Speaker 1: be able to cover, and you have to be able
- 10:12Speaker 1: to be versatile and rangey and just cover a lot
- 10:17Speaker 1: of ground. They already have that in Drew mccuba, but
- 10:20Speaker 1: I think they could stand to get a little bit
- 10:23Speaker 1: more athletic with the player who they're pairing next to him,
- 10:27Speaker 1: and give them another young player to grow with Quinna Metell,
- 10:31Speaker 1: Cooper Dejen and Drew mccuba. And we'll see. Because Rei
- 10:36Speaker 1: Blankenship is beloved here in this city. The organization loves
- 10:40Speaker 1: Red Blankenship, He's probably gonna have his handful of suitors.
- 10:44Speaker 1: He may have more value to the Eagles than he
- 10:45Speaker 1: would ordinarily to another team, but I think that the
- 10:49Speaker 1: Eagles could stand to upgrade in that area. And that's
- 10:51Speaker 1: where I would look to the draft, because you have
- 10:54Speaker 1: confidence in Joe Casper, who of course replaced Christian Parker
- 10:59Speaker 1: as defensive backs coach, to develop those players and allow
- 11:03Speaker 1: them to maximize their potential because he's done it before.
- 11:06Speaker 1: He has a growing resume that shows exactly that there's
- 11:11Speaker 1: been a lot of players when he was the safety's
- 11:13Speaker 1: coach that experience varying degrees of success under his eye.
- 11:17Speaker 1: And so I think that also plays into it. You
- 11:20Speaker 1: know the caliber of coach that they would be coming
- 11:23Speaker 1: in and working under, and I think that would give
- 11:25Speaker 1: them a little bit more confidence to go that route
- 11:28Speaker 1: in the draft.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Hey, Philly Fans, game day is stressful enough parking, traffic,

- 14:43Speaker 4: Birds that's getsold dot com promo code birds for thirty
- 14:48Speaker 4: percent off.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Now with the tight end position, that's where it gets
- 14:52Speaker 1: a little interesting. Because Dallas Goddard is a free agent,
- 14:56Speaker 1: and I think at thirty one years old, given his
- 14:58Speaker 1: injury history, he would maybe to me, he would be
- 15:03Speaker 1: a player that I think would be someone the Eagles
- 15:05Speaker 1: would want to keep in house. And he may not
- 15:09Speaker 1: command as much as what everyone's expecting because of what
- 15:12Speaker 1: I just outlined. He has an innate rapport with jaywhen hurts.
- 15:15Speaker 1: That's been evident throughout the years. You saw it in
- 15:18Speaker 1: real time last season. And they don't have any other
- 15:21Speaker 1: players at that position under contract aside from E. J.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Jenkins and Jahem Bell, and so that to me, would
- 15:29Speaker 1: be the most logical course of action to keep Dallas
- 15:32Speaker 1: Goddard in house for a year and then you draft
- 15:37Speaker 1: his replacement in the draft this year. And while there
- 15:41Speaker 1: are players you can of course find on Day three
- 15:43Speaker 1: that are intriguing dart throws, the Eagles are not in
- 15:48Speaker 1: a position where they can afford to do that, not
- 15:50Speaker 1: if you're relying on that player to be the successor
- 15:52Speaker 1: for Dallas Goddard. So I think on day one or
- 15:55Speaker 1: day two you have to identify the air apparent, and
- 15:58Speaker 1: I look at someone around pick sixty eight, Max Claire,
- 16:02Speaker 1: the tight end from Ohio State, who kind of reminds
- 16:04Speaker 1: me of Zach Ertz in terms of his route running, prowess,
- 16:07Speaker 1: his ability to find the sauce spots in the zone.
- 16:09Speaker 1: He plays through contact, but he is a better blocker
- 16:13Speaker 1: than zach Ertz is. He would be a player that
- 16:15Speaker 1: I would target right there on day two, and I
- 16:18Speaker 1: think the Eagles fall right within his range there around
- 16:21Speaker 1: sixty eight or so. That would be a player that
- 16:24Speaker 1: you could bring him in. He's gonna have to learn
- 16:27Speaker 1: under Ryan Mahaffey, who was the run game coordator, a
- 16:30Speaker 1: new tight ends coach, replacing Jason Michael and become the
- 16:34Speaker 1: understudy for Goddard and then take the rains next season
- 16:37Speaker 1: versus taking a dart throw in day three. You think
- 16:40Speaker 1: you have something there, but you don't know. This gives
- 16:43Speaker 1: you a surefire option that you have him in the
- 16:46Speaker 1: meeting room, you have him on the practice field, you
- 16:48Speaker 1: mold them the way that you want to, and then
- 16:50Speaker 1: next season he's able to take the rains. It's almost
- 16:52Speaker 1: like a passing of the baton in a way, from
- 16:55Speaker 1: Goddard to whoever his successor is. And then I think
- 17:00Speaker 1: you look at the cornerback position, and yes, I've been
- 17:04Speaker 1: a big supporter of adri Jackson. I've written about him
- 17:07Speaker 1: a ton. I've talked to him plenty of times last season,
- 17:09Speaker 1: great guy who I view as a survivor. He was
- 17:11Speaker 1: the last man standing in a crowded house of corners
- 17:15Speaker 1: and he deserves a lot of respect for that. But
- 17:17Speaker 1: I do believe it Eagles could stand to upgrade in
- 17:19Speaker 1: that cornerback two spot. You look what the Seattle Seahawks
- 17:23Speaker 1: did in the Super Bowl and they just bottled up
- 17:26Speaker 1: the New England Patriots and they didn't have a sore
- 17:29Speaker 1: spot in the secondary for me. And there's some intriguing
- 17:32Speaker 1: names that I'll get to another podcast of free agent
- 17:36Speaker 1: corners that I think would be a good fit and
- 17:39Speaker 1: give you a little bit more of an upgrade. They
- 17:40Speaker 1: can sort of be a competent stop gap while you
- 17:44Speaker 1: seek a player, whether it be in the third or
- 17:46Speaker 1: fourth round, to be someone that the Eagles can look
- 17:51Speaker 1: at with developmental upside. He grows under Casper for a
- 17:56Speaker 1: year and then next season he's able to kind of
- 17:58Speaker 1: step into that role. Then all of a sudden, you
- 18:01Speaker 1: have yourself a really young secondary. But I think right now,
- 18:04Speaker 1: because of the learning curve and how that can be
- 18:06Speaker 1: a little daunting for corners, that's where I think you
- 18:10Speaker 1: could add a veteran type of player, and again I'll
- 18:13Speaker 1: get into all those names at a later date, but
- 18:16Speaker 1: that's just some of the things that I've been kicking
- 18:18Speaker 1: around here and how I might approach this offseason where
- 18:22Speaker 1: there are so many areas of need for the foot
- 18:23Speaker 1: off Eagles, and that's going to do it for this
- 18:25Speaker 1: edition of a czech Odeli. I'm Andrew to Checko and
- 18:28Speaker 1: I'll catch you all on the next one.
