- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Hey there and welcome to the Digital Nomad Life Podcast.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Krista, also known as Kristabella Travels on social media.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: I always say that at the beginning of every episode because I just want you to know that I am so open to having a conversation with you in the DMs if you have any questions on how you personally can become a digital nomad.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: This entire podcast, every single episode, is catered towards a very specific kind of person.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Someone who is a big dreamer, someone who is freedom focused, someone who is an action taker, a go-getter, someone who just wants to change their life and make their life as dreamy as possible.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Someone who cares about living authentically.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: If you are that person, you are in the right place.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Today's episode is actually inspired by someone who I recently had a conversation with that's on their digital nomad journey.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: And when I say they're on their digital nomad journey, I don't mean that they're like this close to becoming a digital nomad.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: No, they're actually quite far away from it at the moment because what they were asking me about was how to get clients.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: And getting clients is probably the thing that makes becoming a digital nomad feel so inaccessible to people.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: There are so many people that I talk to on a daily basis that have had amazing career history.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: They have so much awesome experience.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: They know that they are valuable, they have great work ethic, they are ambitious, they're excited, they're passionate, they have all these things.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Again, they're skilled people, but they feel like they're missing this key skill of getting clients.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: And therefore, they don't know if the work from anywhere life is possible for them.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: So I want to make this episode to give you an understanding of what, quote, getting clients actually even really means from a practical perspective.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: And I want this episode to be something where you can, you know, once the I was just thinking, hang up the phone.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: It feels like I'm on the phone with you.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: You can hang up the phone with me and then immediately get to work taking action on things I'm going to share with you today.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Okay, so obviously, if you're gonna take action immediately after this podcast, it's really only gonna be possible for you to take action if you already have a business idea.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: So before you turn off the episode because you don't have a business idea, I just want you to know and to be reassured that if you don't have a business idea yet, that's okay.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: I'm still gonna be catering this episode towards people that um are very new in the journey.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: So um, if you don't have a business idea yet, I highly encourage you to listen to episode 33 of this podcast.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: I talk about my career assessment process, and that is um, yeah, some like a again, a process that I take my clients through who don't know what they want to do for remote work.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: I analyze your entire personality, all of your skills, all of your interests, all of your work history, things that you studied in school that you liked, didn't like, were curious about, but never fully explored.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Like we leave no stone unturned when I do the career assessment process.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: And uh by the end, I'm always able to suggest at least a couple of remote business ideas that usually make my clients say, oh my God, how did I not think about that?
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: That's totally aligned with who I am as a person.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: I would love to do that.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: How do I get started?
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: And then they can join the Digital Nomad Life Academy, which is my business.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: And then I teach them how to actually get started building that business and getting clients.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: Okay, so even though people pay me quite a bit of money to teach them how to get clients, I want to share the general philosophy with you here because again, I want you to feel like it's accessible to you.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Like there, there's just some, there's just ways that you need to think about getting clients that will maybe change how you feel about it.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: I think a lot of people feel like getting clients is this big, daunting, scary thing.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: Um, and I think for a lot of new business owners, it is a big daunting, scary thing because they're not thinking about it in the right way.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: So yeah, today I want to share with you how to think about it so that getting clients doesn't actually have to be so scary or daunting.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Okay, so before we get into the practical stuff, I just want to make one thing clear, and that is the difference between clients and customers.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: This episode is talking about clients, which are people that are going to pay you for a specific service, something where you are exchanging your time for money.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: So we're talking about coaches, consultants, editors, designers, organizers, planners, support people, facilitators, etc.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Anything where you are again working with someone, there is some kind of energetic exchange.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Whereas a customer, you are exchanging a product or something that is pretty hands-off.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: So with customers, it's just a completely different business model that, again, is not what I'm talking about here.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Customers you can acquire through, yeah, ads, storefronts, etc.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: But well, you could use ads for getting clients.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: But I'm gonna try to make this episode.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Well, I want to make this episode talking about how you can get clients without having to run ads because I think that's a whole other skill set.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Getting clients can be completely free and you don't need anything really to get a client.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: It's so much more of an embodiment of the way that you show up and how clear you are on what your actual offer is.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Now, when I say show up, I think this is the part that trips a lot of people up because they think, okay, well, show up where?
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Like if I'm a digital nomad, the only place that I can show up is social media.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: And I do get why people think that.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Um, but actually it's not true.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: There are so many different places that you can show up to get clients, and that's what we are covering today.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Where you're showing up is answering the question of how are people going to become aware of you in the first place?
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Now, getting clients, it is more than just awareness.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: You could have the biggest audience in the world, and everybody could be aware that you offer a specific thing, but that doesn't mean that they're actually still gonna pay you for that specific thing.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Like, let's say that you have an audience and you are offering elephant rides.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Um, maybe everybody knows that you are offering elephant rides and you have a million people that know that this is what you offer, but maybe your elephant rides are highly unethical, or maybe they're in a location in the world that is so hard to reach.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: Um, so it's not just about people being aware that you exist, it's also about being able to communicate why your service is good and helpful and useful and valuable, and also taking someone through the process of actually being able to say yes to you, which also requires some logistical things in the back end of your business.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: So, um, again, there's just a few aspects to getting clients.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: And I think most people focus exclusively on awareness, but I just want to go into this so that you know that it's not just about awareness.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: Um, so awareness is, I think, the thing that we need to talk about last.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: Because in that silly example that I just gave about the elephant rides, you can see now that there is actually quite a lot of work to do within your business first in order for the awareness to actually amount to anything.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: Because the last thing that we want to do is have you go mega viral on some kind of platform and then still get no money from it.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: So, like that happens all the time.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: So yeah, if only these people that would go viral would consult me as their business coach, then I would be able to help them make a lot of money and leverage that audience.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: And again, people without an audience can also make more money than people with an audience if they have the right business underneath it.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: So, what does that mean?
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: What does it mean to have the right business underneath your audience?
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: All right, well, your business first of all starts with what it actually even is that you're offering.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: So, in this silly example, in this case, it was elephant rides.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: But maybe you are wanting to be a digital nomad, of course.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: So maybe what you're offering is not elephant rides, but it is graphic design or copywriting or community management.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: Maybe you're consulting someone on how to use a particular software effectively.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Maybe you're a virtual assistant, or maybe you're working in the back end of someone else's business as an operations manager.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Whatever the service actually is that you are offering, first of all, you need to convince yourself that your service is super valuable.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Because if you are not convinced that your offer is super valuable, nobody else is gonna be convinced that your offer is super valuable.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: You as the business owner are always gonna have so much more information about your business than your customers or than your clients.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: So, first of all, the you are the source of your ability to get clients.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: And that is probably the thing to start with.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: So, um, actually, do you know what?
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: I want to use the example of a lawyer because it was actually a lawyer that originally asked this question on how to get clients.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: So, being a lawyer is something that kind of has inherent value.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: Like society has already become very clear on why we need lawyers and when we need lawyers.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: So, someone who's a lawyer might not actually have to get that creative or need to do that much convincing of themselves on why they have a great offer.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: But we do also know that there's a lot of competition for lawyers, right?
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: So that's when, as a lawyer, you would want to get clear on why you are the best lawyer of all the lawyers, why you are the best choice of all the lawyers.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: And maybe it's because you aren't afraid to utilize AI.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: So therefore, your clients are going to get faster results from you while also having your human eye looking over everything.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: That might be a reason why somebody might hire you as an AI-powered lawyer versus a more traditional lawyer who is just billing everything by the minute and is going to charge exorbitant fees.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: So, whatever it is that you are offering, make sure that you know why your offer is really good.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: And if you don't know why your offer is really good, guess what?
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: You're not gonna get any clients.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: So we're starting from the core.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: Get clear on why your offer is good.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: Why is someone going to pay you versus your competition?
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: And if you don't know how to do that, that is where a business coach comes in such handy because oftentimes we can't really see what our own value is.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: It's really helpful to have somebody else reflect that back to us and also be able to reword it in a way that it will be appealing to another person.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: So that is a service that I offer for my clients all the time.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: They come to me, they say, okay, this is what I want to do, but I don't know how to phrase it in a way that gets people interested.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: So, what I do to help my clients phrase it, the thing that they're doing, in a way that gets people interested, is we first start talking about who is it exactly for?
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Whenever you are building a business, obviously the first thing that you need to do is decide what the business actually even is.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: But the next thing that you need to do is determine who it's for.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: If you are a lawyer, you're not for literally everybody because you're a divorce lawyer, you're a corporate lawyer, you are a probate lawyer, you're a personal injury lawyer, you're not just a lawyer for literally anybody and everyone.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: You've chosen some kind of specialty for a specific kind of person in a specific kind of situation.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: Now, this is really important because we are here talking about how to get clients when you don't have an audience.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: So you might not have an audience of a bunch of people following you, but the people that you want to pay you, they are hanging out in specific places online.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: I like to call them watering holes because there's this concept that I share with my clients called a sales safari, where essentially if you know what it is that you're looking for or who it is that you're looking for, you can then put your binoculars on and start hyper focusing on places where that person might be, that animal in the safari term.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: So uh let's say that you are a personal injury lawyer.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: What you're not gonna do is go hang out at um like marriage counseling waiting rooms.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: A divorce lawyer might do that, but a personal injury lawyer, why would they be there?
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: That would be so random.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: A personal injury lawyer is probably hanging out around an ambulance, right?
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: Or if they're a digital personal injury lawyer, they might be hanging out on, let's say, Reddit threads where people are asking about how they can overcome this injury or how much money they might be entitled to.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: Like there are people online that are asking questions that specifically a personal injury lawyer could answer.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: And if you're a personal injury lawyer and you're reading those Reddit threads and you respond with value, and then you also invite that person that you're talking to to speak with you, you could get a client.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: That person has just become aware of you through your response on their Reddit post.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: Now, again, getting clients, it's not just the awareness, it's also you showing and demonstrating that you have a lot of value to give and then actually logistically closing that person and turning them into a client or a sale.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: But again, awareness, I think, is a thing that most people struggle with.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: So the point that I'm trying to make here is that you don't need to have an audience of people that are coming to you.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: But if they're not coming to you, you need to know where you're going.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: You need to know who it is that you're targeting and you need to identify where it is that they are hanging out.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: Now, the internet is a vast place, a place where literally everybody you know is hanging out, as well as everybody that you do not yet know.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Every single one of your potential clients is somewhere online.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: They are hanging out online.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: Now, I think the reason why a lot of people think, oh, I need to have an audience if I want to get clients is because social media like Instagram is a place where it's pretty ubiquitous.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: Like everybody hangs out on Instagram.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: So um, even if you don't have an audience, I think the first thing that I always tell my clients to do is at least, at least to establish your persona on social media.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: So um that might be that you just create a new Instagram profile.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: It has a bio at the top that says exactly what it is that you do, who it is that you help, and then you make a few posts on your Instagram, like the top three pinned posts, for example, that answer the basic questions that a client would want to know.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: Like maybe the client wants to know who you are and what your credibility is.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: Maybe they want to see a testimonial, and maybe they want to see generally what it is that you actually offer or how your service works.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: So if you have all that stuff on your Instagram, that is, in my opinion, a much better place to be posting all that stuff than a website.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: Because ultimately, once you do get in front of the right potential customer, right potential client, they're gonna wanna, yeah, talk to you, but they also might want to see some credibility as to who you are.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: Um, a website can accomplish that, but you can't communicate on a website.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: A website is just like a one-sided thing, like it's kind of like a billboard where the client looks at the billboard, looks at the website, and then they either call you or they don't.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: Whereas on Instagram, they might like one of your pictures, or they could slide into your DMs, or you could slide into their DMs.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: Either way, it's uh Instagram is a much more visible place to have a presence.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: When I say presence, I'm not saying audience.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Okay, these are different things.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: This episode is how to get clients without an audience, but it's not how to get clients without a presence.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's make that distinction clear.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: So, first thing that I want you to do after you get really clear on what it is that you're offering and who you're offering it to, you're going to establish your presence in a place where you can communicate with these clients.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: And I love Instagram for that, but it also could be LinkedIn.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: It also could be Facebook.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: Um, it could be, I don't know, anywhere else that you can have a profile.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: Could be threads, could be X, Twitter.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: But once you have your presence established, now it is time to lay the groundwork and um actually start getting people aware of you.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: We're gonna kickstart the awareness.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: Cause this whole thing, if you build it, they will come.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: If you build the Instagram, they will come.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: No, that's not how it works.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: If you post, they will not see it necessarily.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: So you got to do a little bit more work to get awareness.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: You're trying to drive awareness, you're trying to drive people to come check out your new Instagram presence.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: The best thing that you can do is to make a list of all the people that you know.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: All the people that you know that if you sent them a message, they would be like, oh yeah, I know who you are.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, we have a good relationship.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, I'm I'm happy to help you.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: Can you make a list of all of those people?
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: Ideally, you can get at least a hundred people on this list.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: Now, the this list does not need to be people that are your potential clients.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: They do not need to be that.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: They could be your potential clients, but they also could just be connectors.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: So let's say that it's like your best friend or your mom, you know, someone who you actually have a huge overlapping network, but there is no person on the planet that will ever have the exact same network as you.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: If your best friend knows 10 people that you don't know, those are 10 people who know a hundred more people.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: So your best friend could actually be an access point to hundreds, if not thousands, of more people.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: So if you have a hundred people on your list, and every one of those hundred people know at least a hundred people that they know that you don't know, that is access to 10,000 people.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: And 10,000 people following someone on social media is considered an audience.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: So again, these 10,000 people, they don't need to be following you, but they need to be able to hear about you.
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: And if they are interested, if they are relevant, they come over to your new Instagram presence and then they see what they need to see in order to take the next step, which is giving you a call, sending you a DM, inquiring about your freebie, etc.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: So awareness, awareness, awareness.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: You're gonna start off with again the hundred people on this list.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: And um, I really recommend no matter what business you are creating, or what even if you don't have a business idea yet.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: Actually, I think making a list of a hundred people that you know that you would feel comfortable having a conversation with, um, if you make that list, it actually might help you come up with a business idea.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: You might see themes of people that you have access to.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: And if there are themes of people that you have access to, that's a great indication of what kind of industry might be easier for you to break into.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: Like maybe actually there are so many people that you know that are teachers.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: Well, teachers, they all have specific needs and interests and desires, things that they would be willing to pay for if they found value in.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: Maybe you could create a business that helps teachers somehow if you happen to.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: Have 15 teachers in your network.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: Because all those 15 teachers, they know more teachers.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: That's a lot of teachers that you could have access to.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: Now, once you have this list created, you're not just gonna look at the list and post on your wall and admire it.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: You're gonna do something with that list.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: You are going to go through one by one by one of all the people that you know, and you're gonna send them a little message.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: You're gonna let them know about what's going on in your life, and you're going to specifically ask them if they know anyone who might be relevant and could they provide an intro?
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: Um, I know that this sounds a little bit vulnerable, and that's why I highly recommend that on that list you have people that you are actually super, super comfortable with.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: Ask your best friend, ask your mom.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: Um, start off with people that, you know, you know that they have your support, you know that you have their support and that they're gonna love you no matter what, and um that they're not gonna judge you if you quote, fail.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: I think this is actually a big thing that prevents people from starting a business and getting clients is that they're so scared of letting people know what it is that they're doing that they actually end up never telling anybody.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: And therefore nobody could becomes aware of their business, and then nobody can purchase from them because awareness is the first step.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: So um just, you know, I am a career and I'm a business coach, but I'm also very much a mindset coach.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: And this is something that I have seen with my clients over and over and over again is that they say, okay, now I have my business already, my Instagram presence is up and um I wanna, I wanna launch my business, I want to get my first client.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: And then I'm like, okay, start telling people about it.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: And they're like, no, oh my God, wait, I can't, I have to tell people.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: I have to tell people about my business.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: And it's like, yeah, yeah, that that is what you have to do if you want to actually get a client, if you want to actually get someone to pay you.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: You need people to be aware that your business exists.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: So I just I mentioned that because I want you to know that this is something that it's not just you that might struggle with it.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: It's most people because it is vulnerable and it is scary to be building a business that you've never built before.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: It is scary to be saying, to claim, hey, this is what I'm doing now, and I'm doing it on my own.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: And I hope you don't watch me fall, right?
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: But um it just this comes with the territory of being a business owner.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: So I want you to know that it's normal to be afraid and sometimes you just have to do the scary thing.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: Sometimes you just have to feel the fear and do it anyway.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: So you're gonna make that list and you're gonna go through that list.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: You're gonna start off with the people that you feel most comfortable with and you're gonna tell them about your business.
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: And this is it's actually important to start off with the people that are easiest to talk to about it because you also wanna.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: This sounds a little bit weird, but you wanna literally condition your mouth to saying the words.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: You know, when you have a story to tell, like let's say you just went through a breakup or um, you know, something significant or embarrassing happened, the first person that you tell, it feels way harder to tell that person.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: But then once you tell one person, it's a little bit easier to tell the next person.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: And then suddenly after you've told 10 people, you start saying, Oh my gosh, I know I I've just said this like a million times, but I'm gonna tell you the story again.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: You're now so used to saying that story that the emotional charge is no longer there because you've said it over and over and over again.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: Your mouth, your brain has literally gotten conditioned and used to saying the thing.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: So um, it's actually really important practice to also practice saying what it is that you do and why you're doing it and who it's for and why it's valuable.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: Practice it with people that are your safe people so that you are then comfortable starting to say it to people who are you're less comfortable with, but have a more expanded network.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: Like your old colleagues, for example, um, they might not be people that you feel super comfortable with.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: But if you've already said, hey, this is what I'm doing and this is why I'm doing it, do you know anybody who's interested in this or might be interested in this?
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: Can I get an intro?
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: If you've already said that 20 times, it's gonna feel way safer to say it to people who you're not as close with.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: Now, once you have made your list of people and you have gone through and messaged every single one, chances are, statistically, there's gonna be one or two people that come through that actually are relevant clients to your business.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: So that means that now you're gonna officially move on to the next step, which is beyond awareness.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: And it is actually the it is actually the sales process.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: It is getting that person interested in what it is that you're you're doing and um and showing them why what it is that you're doing is so valuable to them.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: Now, this is on creating an irresistible offer, which we definitely don't have time to get into in this particular episode.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: Um, creating your offer is is a really big aspect of business.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: But if you know who it is that you're trying to help so well, like you've um maybe been reading books written by that perspective or um book reviews, or maybe you have been binging Reddit threads, or you've gone and um gone onto threads or X or something, and and you've watched people and listened to people talk about their challenges that they're having in that specific industry or or situation, or maybe you've talked to AI extensively about your ideal client and the struggles that they're having.
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: When your ideal client comes into your world for real, now you're gonna know what to offer them that is going to actually solve their problem.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: What we don't want to do is create an offer that isn't gonna actually solve the real problem.
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: But if you are not your ideal client, you might not know what they really need.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: So, for example, if I were a lawyer and I went into divorce law, but I have not been divorced, I don't really know what it's like to be my ideal client.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: So, what I really need to do before I go create an offer is talk to people who have been divorced and ask them, what do they wish had gone better?
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: What do they wish could have been different throughout their divorce process with the lawyer?
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: And then start offering that as the thing that I'm now going to offer to all the new people that are gonna pay me to be their divorce lawyer.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, your market research is just such a huge part about this.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: And that's also something, by the way, that you can get through your friends of friends, through your connections.
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: Like if anybody introduces you to someone who's relevant, you don't necessarily need to go out and pitch them, but you could just get on a phone call and ask them, okay, like what would be your ideal solution if somebody were to help you with this problem?
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: What would you need?
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: How would you want them to show up?
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: Um, how much time would you want it to take?
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: What's most important to you?
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: Where would you see return on this investment, et cetera?
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: So um, those are market research conversations.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: And uh, the more of those you have, the easier the conversion is going to be once someone does become aware of your business.
- 33:49SPEAKER_00: Okay, so to recap so far, you've got your, you've become very clear on what it is that you're offering and who you're offering it to.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: And then you've made an Instagram presence or some some presence somewhere where you can have a direct conversation that answers the questions that your ideal client probably has.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: Now you're you've got your list of the 100 people that you know.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: You've also written a little message that says, hey, so-and-so, this is what I'm doing now.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: This is the kind of person that I'm looking to get in touch with.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: Do you know them?
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: And would you be so kind as to make an introduction if possible?
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: So that person that you know, like and trust, introduces you to someone who could be relevant for your business.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: And then you're gonna take initiative and you're gonna set up a conversation with that person.
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: If it's on this is why I suggest like having a presence on Instagram because it's just very easy for people to make connections in the DMs on Instagram.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: Somebody can very easily make a group chat.
- 34:50SPEAKER_00: Hey, so-and-so, this is the person I was telling you about.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: Now, now that new connection, they can clearly see your profile.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: They're like, oh yeah, okay, I understand what this conversation is going to be about.
- 35:02SPEAKER_00: I'm interested.
- 35:03SPEAKER_00: And then you're gonna chime in to that group conversation and you're gonna say, great, let me set up the call, Zoom, WhatsApp, phone call, text message.
- 35:13SPEAKER_00: Like you're just you're gonna, you're gonna initiate the conversation.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: And then when you get on that conversation, you are gonna ask so many questions about that person.
- 35:24SPEAKER_00: Um, now, again, this is like a whole other aspect about getting clients.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: It's it's sales.
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: Um, sales does not have to be sleazy or slimy.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: Sales, sales can actually be something where you're greatly of service.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: Your friend, remember, recommended you to someone that clearly needs help with something.
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: So you're gonna show up to that conversation just so ready to be of service, so ready to help, so ready to support.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: And if that person is like, wow, great, I see a lot of value in this, great.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: They probably will want to pay you.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: And if they don't want to pay you, that's okay.
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: That's okay too.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: It's okay.
- 36:03SPEAKER_00: You're probably only ever gonna close at best 50% of your sales conversations, but it's probably gonna be more like 30.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: So that means that you're gonna need to get on 10 sales calls in order to make in order to get three clients.
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: So you just have to know statistically that the vast majority of the conversations that you're gonna have, especially at the beginning, are not going to result in you making a sale.
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: And that is totally fine.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: Every single conversation that you have with the relevant person will ultimately help you get clearer on who it is that you're working that you want to work with, clearer on what it is that they need, clearer on why they have not yet succeeded, clearer on the value that you can offer.
- 36:51SPEAKER_00: And as I said at the beginning of this episode, the clearer that you are on who it is, how you can help, what you do, the easier it's going to be for you to make sales, the easier it's also going to be for you to start writing pitch letters, pitch emails, even content that speaks to that person.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: So this is how to get your first client without an audience.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, there's so, so, so much more that you can do to get clients.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: Like there are literally so many methods, but this method that I shared with you today is so simple, so straightforward.
- 37:31SPEAKER_00: It's free.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: Anybody can do it.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: You don't need to have like literally anything set up.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: You can set all of this up within a day.
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: And I mean that.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: Like if you are someone who's out here being like, I hate my job, I want to change my life, da-da-da.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: Um, then get some hyper focus, blast out some Instagram page today and just get started, get sloppy with this.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: The faster you get started, the faster your life is gonna change.
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: And um honestly, again, this first list of 100 people is just the seed of your client acquisition process.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: There are so many more people in the world.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: Again, those 100 people, they all have access to 100 more people that they know, at least, if not more.
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: And out of each one of those people, a few of them are gonna have some relevant, some relevant contacts.
- 38:29SPEAKER_00: Now, um, again, other ways do you get clients?
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: So start with that one.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: But what you can also do is start driving people to your Instagram page, which again, hopefully you've got a presence set up that clearly communicates your value and what it is that you do.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: But you can leverage other people's viral content.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: And again, I'm just using Instagram as the example.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: It could also be LinkedIn, it could also be um X or Threads or whatever, TikTok.
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, if you see content that is viral on a different platform, you can leave a comment.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: And ideally, if that comment is valuable or funny or interesting, relevant, you can in that comment also mention, and and I do this.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: And then people that are interested in what they do, you do, they will come over to your profile.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: So you can leverage existing viral content.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: And actually, I think another exercise that you can do once you've made the list of your 100 close people, is you can make a list of all of your competitors.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: It doesn't have to be people that are directly competing with your business, but people that are making content that are relevant to your business.
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: So you can go onto the for you page, the discover page, the explore page, and find the most viral content on your subject matter and start commenting on all of it and see or see who else has commented and reply to them or send those people a DM.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: Hey, I saw that you commented on this thing.
- 40:09SPEAKER_00: I thought that was really interesting, or I'm curious to hear more and strike up a conversation with people that you have identified are your ideal client.
- 40:18SPEAKER_00: And you can find them on social media again without having an audience, but with having a presence.
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: Again, the presence, it doesn't have to be huge.
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: Six posts, clear bio, nice approachable profile picture, and that is enough.
- 40:36SPEAKER_00: Um, so yeah, you can also go onto Facebook groups, you can go into Reddit, you can go, you'll go into Quora, you can go into different places where people are having conversations about the subject that you support with.
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: And I just want you to know that your first client is always gonna be the hardest one to get.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be the most nerve-wracking, it's gonna be the one where you're least experienced, it's gonna be the one where your offer is the worst, your offer is the least developed.
- 41:07SPEAKER_00: Um, it's gonna be the one where you have the least amount of clarity, the one where you have the most anxiety, and the one where you have the least context and the least testimonials.
- 41:15SPEAKER_00: So just to validate that, your first client is your hardest client to get.
- 41:19SPEAKER_00: But once you get that first client, what you're gonna get is experience, a testimonial, and ideally a happy customer who is happy to tell people that they know about you.
- 41:35SPEAKER_00: And they get to say, hey, I worked with this person.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: Like, I can't even tell you.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: Every single person that I have ever hired to support me with my business, my podcast editor, um, social media managers, ad specialists, community managers, coaches, et cetera, like I recommend them to other people if I have a good experience with them.
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: Because as a coach and a business owner, I know a lot of other coaches and business owners.
- 42:04SPEAKER_00: And we all need the same thing.
- 42:07SPEAKER_00: So your first client is really just getting your foot in the door of the industry that you want to work in.
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: And I do hope that you can trust that word of mouth referrals is going to be a lot easier from then on.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: And you can also step into more advanced, um, advanced marketing channels.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: And you can start to build an audience, which again, I do recommend that you do, but it's not necessary for you to get your first client.
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: So I hope that this episode was helpful.
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: Um, I want you to know that the life that you desire is so possible for you.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: Like the strategy that I broke down for you today is not hard.
- 42:48SPEAKER_00: It's not for people that are super smart.
- 42:51SPEAKER_00: You don't need to have any special kind of credibility or skills or experience in order to make a list of the people that you know and message them and ask for support.
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: We just we make it such a bigger deal than it has to be because we're scared or because we're lacking clarity.
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: So overcoming fears and getting clarity are two things that I, as a business coach, help people with every single day.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: And again, have helped hundreds of people with.
- 43:21SPEAKER_00: So if you don't have clarity on what your business idea is, please go listen to episode 33 of this podcast.
- 43:27SPEAKER_00: I can help you come up with a business idea that's actually really aligned with your soul, with your authenticity, with your vision for the future, with what you like to do.
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: I would love to help you come up with a business idea.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: And then I can actually help you come up with an irresistible offer and get really, really good at selling it to the right people so that you can free your life and that you don't have to be scared of what other people think.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: You don't have to be scared of running out of money, you don't have to be scared of failure, you don't have to be scared of what's gonna happen when you retire.
- 44:02SPEAKER_00: Like you're gonna be able to be building this business with support, with not just support actually building, but support emotionally.
- 44:13SPEAKER_00: Because mark my words, building a business that's not for the faint of heart, but you're not of the faint of heart.
- 44:20SPEAKER_00: You are someone who has big dreams, you are someone who has high standards for your life, you are someone who is obviously an action taker, you are someone who obviously has passion for your life.
- 44:33SPEAKER_00: That's why you're here and that's why you're still listening because you're available to learn new things.
- 44:39SPEAKER_00: So, look, there's no commitment.
- 44:43SPEAKER_00: If you do send me a message on Instagram, like I said at the beginning of this episode, I would love to hear from you.
- 44:48SPEAKER_00: I am a super no pressure person.
- 44:51SPEAKER_00: Um, I know that it's a really big decision to decide to not just create a business, but to create a remote business because your life will start to change.
- 45:01SPEAKER_00: And change can be scary.
- 45:03SPEAKER_00: So, um, you know, a lot of times people say, Oh, Chris, I was listening to your podcast for for three years before I decided to finally work with you.
- 45:11SPEAKER_00: And that is completely fine with me.
- 45:13SPEAKER_00: I know I'm here for the long term and I know it's a long game.
