- speaker-0: Yeah This week on Full Credit to the Noise, Harry Jones gets a call-up, Kai Allen hopes to avoid a come-down, and Will Brown feels all sad. Welcome to Full Credit to the Noise. Well, hello. Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, and welcome to Full Credit to the Noise. You can find this podcast on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook at FCTTN Podcast. You can find me on Instagram, Twitter, Blue Sky, and Facebook at Former underscore legend. You can find the microcross me on Twitter at AVL underscore motorsport. He's on at Instagram at AVL dot motorsport. He's a man who this week was named as the face of Jet Star. He has come out in strong support of FIFA's Gianni Infantino, saying he's a brilliant mind that is good for the sport. And tonight he's wearing a sleep apnea mask. Welcome to Speaker Face, Andrew Van Lewen. speaker-1: Thank you for me. That is a terrifying vision of the probably not too distant future, to be honest, the sleep apnea mask. So thank you for ⁓ for bringing that up. ⁓ well, d to be honest, I was thinking about that as well. I don't know that even for a year's supply of free Jet Star flights I'd ⁓ I'd take that deal to be perfectly honest. But ⁓ any speaker-0: How's that? How is it? You're now gonna pay to put your luggage above you. I wouldn't have thought what's next. Yeah. Pay pay to use the life jacket if in case we ever fall or where do we where do we end that? speaker-1: Yeah, it's a ⁓ it's a slippery s I mean I did I did spend a few years in in Europe and ⁓ have to play the the Ryanair stampede game to try and you know, when you don't have a seat and that sort of stuff a few times. But at least in those cases, you know, if you're flying from, you know, Germany to to to Lithuania for fourteen euros, you kinda go, Well, you know what, this is y this is a true getting what you pay for experience. But ⁓ yeah, those Jet Star flights are still not all that cheap. speaker-0: Ryan Eyre were talking about introducing standing flights. Yeah. Would you have a crack at that? speaker-1: Nah, probably not. speaker-0: I reckon you would for those shorter ones like you're talking about. speaker-1: Yeah, maybe. The flights are incredibly cheap. That's the one thing. You put up with so much because again, like you can fly from Central Europe to to the UK or something for literally less than twenty bucks. Yeah, well that's that's it's not gonna be comfortable. It can't be. But I see the interview. I'm not sure Titstar's quite at that point in terms of their price. speaker-0: Yeah, what you giving? The dude who owns Ryanair come out and said that if I s if I sold standing room tickets on my planes, I guarantee you they would be the first one sold. Yeah. Which is fair insight into speaker-1: You're not flying it for the experience. You're doing it to get to get somewhere as cheaply as possible. speaker-0: Yeah. Well mate, what happened this week? I mean, did you hear this thing about Mercedes are about to face Leelash in the US? 'Cause two customers reckon the AMG badges in their seats have caused burns to their skin. ⁓ wow. Now according to court documents, one of the plaintiffs received second degree burns where AMG was inscribed. A dermatologist said he could have permanent scarring discoloration as a result of ⁓ the injury. ⁓ six weeks later another person has now come out and said the exact same thing's happened to them. They've got burn marks on the Just above their bum. I mean, is that so bad? An AMG badge on your I've seen worse tramp saps. speaker-1: That's a tramstand. Would it be backwards, but I'm trying to think of how the mirroring of how it works. Like if it was the right way round, people would probably pay to have it done. Is it a seat heating thing? Is it like the is the is the heating element in the I hate seat heating anyway. It's a very bizarre feeling. speaker-0: That's a good call. Yeah. I mean yeah, ma knowing the Germans, they wouldn't have done it backwards. They have fixed that up as well. They don't there's not much they don't think about. But surely there's worse car brands to have branded onto your skin. I mean I I know I'd like a chimera branded on to me, but ⁓ yeah, I mean what about a larder? Yeah, that'd be a good little brand to be to have showing everyone that you once owned a larder. speaker-1: ⁓ yeah, for sure. I'm not sure that ladders have heat seeders to be honest, but ⁓ anyway. speaker-0: All they do or they're on fire and that's pretty often. What's the worst car you've had, OVL? speaker-1: Yeah, very true. Worst car that I've had, I haven't really had any really bad cars. I haven't had anything that that was that was really bad. No, I've I've I I haven't had any any really bad cars. I've had I've had some fun cars, but nothing terrible. speaker-0: An X XD Falcon that was ⁓ that was a nightmare, let's be honest. It was a good car if you wanted to hang out at petrol stations. You check the oil and ⁓ check the fuel and fill the oil. ⁓ yeah, it was it's a hell of a thing, but ⁓ I don't I probably wouldn't want the old XD badge on the back of my ⁓ tramp stamp just above the Kamara tramp stamp. Alright, let's go to the shift cut, because there's some news including some new news that we've got to get right in timing. speaker-1: Yeah, I think that's fair enough. speaker-0: And currently under embargo, so we'll get this right, but Mat Stone Racing has confirmed a change to their twenty twenty six Enduro Cup co driver lineup with Harry Jones, my man, to replace Cameron Crick in the number four Sharon Rentals Camaro for Mat Stone Racing. ⁓ they'd also like to announce that following ongoing health concerns, ⁓ that's resulted in the withdrawal ⁓ from the ⁓ From the wildcard round, obviously from Townsville that occurred earlier. Cameron Crick ⁓ was then unavailable to to race along those guys for that team. And then they've called up Harry Jones. Now Crick is absent from the co driver's seat, the team has specified, but he remains an important part of the Matt Stone racing family. So best wishes obviously straight away go out to Cameron Crick, I've got to say. But good news for Harry Jones, who I thought would have made a better fist of it last year. So it's good to get a second chance. speaker-1: Yeah, for sure. There's definitely two elements to this and one's a a positive and one's a a really big negative. It's not it's not the most surprising news in the world. You know, Cam Crick was supposed to do the Townsville Wildcard and then to do the two enduro's alongside Jack Le Brock, as as you mentioned. And he's been, yeah, battling these ongoing health issues. It ruled him out of of of Townsville. ⁓ Aaron Seaton jumped in that car instead for that weekend, so great opportunity for Aaron. But ⁓ you know, he him and Cricky are good mate, so still a a tough scenario there. And And I guess we kind of expected like the team really did give Cricky as much time as possible to to to try and get right to be able to do these races. But at some point you do have to just make a decision on this thing because you do have to look for a replacement. So ⁓ yeah, it's really sad news for for Cam. It would have been great to see him in that car. He works so hard to put together the commercial elements to to do these supercars, wildcard and enduro events. We've seen him doing this over the last couple of years. So Really sad for him, ⁓ but as you said, a great opportunity for for Harry Jones when it looked like he wasn't necessarily going to get one. He kind of you know, I I wouldn't say he didn't do enough, but obviously there just wasn't quite enough there. He got a bit unlucky with the timing of James Courtney's retirement and the fact that there was this existing relationship between Charlie Schwercolt and Adrian Burgess and James Courtney and and he was there was sort of this big emotional pull to to to get James to sign for that team for the enduro's and It basically sort of left Harry in the cold there. So he kinda had his big opportunity last year to do the enduro's. There was talk that he was he could very potentially have replaced David Reynolds, and then the we kind of got to the to the end of that and he wasn't even in the in the discussions for for enduro seats for this year. So this is a Great opportunity for him to have another crack at it and to put himself back. He's talked in the past about the fact he wants to be a supercar's driver. This is another opportunity to put himself in that conversation. In a competitive car. I mean, it wasn't a fantastic weekend in Perth for Jack LeBron, but he's in and around the top ten. ⁓ he's you know, he's been the second strongest Camaro, aside from Anton Di Pasquale, for large portions of the season so far. So that's a competitive and Jack's exceptionally ⁓ experienced. So That is a that's a pretty good seat to land in, to be honest, for Harry Jones. So there's a decent opportunity there for him to have another crack at at bringing this supercar's dream to life. And from the MSR side, it's a pretty handy pickup because you would think that however last year played out, Harry's going to come back better for that experience. Like he's done two long supercars races now. I'm sure we learned a heck of a lot while doing doing that enduro campaign and going through those weekends. And now he's ⁓ he's you know so he should be a pretty competitive. co driver and I think he'll be pretty motivated to make sure that he is. speaker-0: Yeah, I think too ⁓ just a safe pair of hands from everything I remember, and I think he's he's put a scratch on him, so th that's also handy for that team as well. But yeah, I smoke a little smoky I reckon for for a podium that that car on the right on the right day. So speaker-1: quick car. We we've seen him perform really well a number of times this year, ⁓ Jack LeBron and MSR. So ⁓ yeah, I think it's ⁓ it it's it's a pretty good outcome for everyone except for poor Cam Crick and and as you said before, we really hope that he does get better soon 'cause we want to see him back in a car and and doing what he loves. speaker-0: Yeah. ⁓ Supercars has officially lodged an appeal against the Stewart's decision not to hand down a penalty to Kai Allen at the Perth Super four forty. Tire pressure monitoring sensors ⁓ detected two of Allen's tires below the sixteen PSI minimum pressure while on the grid ahead of the Sunday race. Stewart's accepted the breaches had been proven but opted against issuing any penalty due to a series of mitigating circumstances. ⁓ they ch chucked out a couple of things, but Rivals were then furious of what is widely redeemed a black and white rule, which is a recommended penalty of disqualification, had been breached without even punishment. ⁓ at Hidden Valley in twenty twenty-one, Nick Percat was able to keep his third place finish despite two ties having dipped below the minimum while on the grid. Stewart ultly elected only to strip BJR of the team's championship points awarded in that race, despite the recommendation for qu disqualification. Jake Kastecki, ⁓ his Matt Stone Racing Commodore, is disqualified the very next event for pretty much the same thing. ⁓ more recent tire pressure ⁓ cases related to Walk and Shaws ⁓ Sydney twenty twenty six. the TWG case in that example resulted in disqualification for Chaz, while the latter at ⁓ MSR in Taupo resulted in a teams fine and points championship. Now s supercars lodged a notice of intention to appeal on Monday. ⁓ Motorsport Australia's confirmed. The National Court of Appeal will hear the case in Melbourne on Monday, august seventeenth. So a quick turnaround for that. This is the first time I think supercars have ex exercised this, right? What's your take? speaker-1: Yeah, look, it is ⁓ it is as far as we can tell unprecedented that supercars usually it's so it's called the Supercars National Court of Appeal, but it's actually Motorsport Australia's Court of Appeal. It's not it's not supercars don't run it. ⁓ so generally it's teams ⁓ appealing decisions made by Motorsport Australia or penalties handed out, but this is the first time that it's actually supercars going up against Motorsport Australia. So it's a little bit confusing 'cause and this is something that ⁓ we discussed on the news pod a few days ago, so go back and have a listen to that. ⁓ for the really broad picture of the whole thing. But, you know, quite where Grove Racing's role in this thing sits is ⁓ interesting because that they they had their fight and they won. And now the fight's been kind of dredged back up. But they're it's not their case to make that they that where the penalty should lie. This is about Motorsport Australia arguing why it elected not to dish out a penalty, even though it established that there was a breach. And that's the other interesting thing in this. So it's not against the decision. Because the decision was there was a breach. But it's against the the subsequent decision to not issue a penalty, despite there being a breach established. So I don't really know what way it's going to go. It's always interesting because, you know, through this appeal process, you effectively are appealing Motorsport Australia, but then it's Motorsport Australia's court. Now obviously there's, you independent panel and all that sort of stuff set up as part of it, but It is all it is generally difficult to get things overturned because you are going back to the people that made the decision and saying, We think you're wrong, have another look at this. ⁓ but in this case, like it's just so difficult to get a read on on what's going to happen. Like it really is, because it is unprecedented and it's yeah, I I just I don't really know how to read it. I I'm I'm glad supercars are doing it. I'm fully supportive of their decision to do it because ⁓ ultimately, and and and this is something that you know we've talked about a bit. You know, as you went ran through all those examples, this is something that there's been different penalties, whether it's been, you know, ⁓ loss of teams championship points or disqualification, but it's always been penalised. In no case has it not been penalised. So, ⁓ I think it is important and even though this is a sporting rule, not a technical rule, you know, it's all about the measurement of a technical tolerance and, you know, what that means and all that sort of stuff. And and Traditionally, anything that's technical or technically adjacent like this is just either disqualification or a loss of points because that means that there's no avenue. And 99.9% of the time it's incredibly harsh because there is no performance advantage to what has happened, you know, if you're a a a you know, a percentage of a gram underweight or whatever, that doesn't necessarily make your car faster, you know, like ⁓ walk on shore in Darwin a few years ago where they had a cooling fan on the car on the grid when they shouldn't like. There were all these reasons why it didn't ha make any difference to the performance of the car. But it doesn't matter. And teams argue against it, but ultimately they accept the fact that you have to have zero tolerance because it's the only way to properly deter people from taking the piss. And, you know, the term can of worms has been used many a time about this. It's pretty universal outside of Grove Racing. And they're I them arguing their patch. That's that's what they should do. There's no issue with that. Absolutely. Yeah. ⁓ but yeah, well, to be honest, they they did pretty good to get out of there. End Dado must have been ⁓ pretty impressed with how this one's gone down. ⁓ so you know, it's no issue with them doing what they did, but it really just feels like this should fall into that this has to be punished sort of thing. So I I do think it it was the right decision from supercars to appeal it and speaker-0: They probably wish they had Dutto, but you know speaker-1: As I was about to say a moment ago, there was there th it's just universal in terms of opinion outside of Grove Racing that the Stuart's got this one wrong. speaker-0: I just no matter what comes out of this, I just pr hope and pray that after it's all decided, Kai Allen comes bursting out of the doors at the court, puts a hoodie over his head, puts a newspaper in front of his face and yells out no comment and yells at the media calls him scum or something. So that would be that would that would be perfect for me. Yeah, good call. Struggling Triple Eight star Will Brown says a straight line speed deficit hampered his weekend at the Perth Super four. Forty Tru Triple Eight announced subsequently that it will switch Brown into its spare chassis amid efforts to rescue the driver's season. Brown failed to make the top ten on any of the weekend's three qualifying sessions. He managed just nineteenth on the grid on Sunday, while teammate Brock Feeney took pole. The twenty twenty four champ opened up on h his issues via his Lucky Dogs podcast, declaring, I'm not a nineteenth place driver, and that there's only so much you can take. I fought for championships in every car I've driven or category, and right now I think I look pretty stupid out there To be honest. ⁓ whenever they car whenever a team changes a car, it's it's like throwing the last cards out. speaker-1: Yeah, it's the it's the full kitchen sink approach. And it's quite interesting because Jamie Wink up said on the Sunday evening in Perth after the Sun after the Sunday race that ⁓ you know, that they were going to thoroughly investigate what was going on with that car, but that it would be heavily science based. And he used the term it'll be based it'll be based on science. Like we need to find out what the problem with this car is. And then they've made the decision to put him into the spare car before the the race cars even got back to Brisbane. So it's difficult to kind of see how much science can be applied to To a car that's in the back of a transporter halfway across the nullaboard. But ⁓ yeah, this is just throwing the kitchen sink at it, like saying, right, okay, here's a whole new car. So yeah, th if there's something wrong with that car, then that should be gone because here's a whole new one. So it's gonna be it's really gonna be ⁓ interesting to see how qualifying goes in Ipswich because ⁓ yeah, yeah, the pressure's on Will to go and get the job done because you know, well, look, the pressure's on Will to get the Job done, providing Brock Feeney is getting the job done. Obviously, if they're both, if it's a Townsville scenario where they're both struggling, that's a whole different conversation. But if Brock's up the front fighting for polls and Will's still not in the top ten, then, you know, there's got to be more question marks over why this is happening. And suddenly the the list of options of what the issue could be starts to narrow. Now, I don't think that's the case. I think Will makes a really good point. Like he he And he kinda made the Yeah, like he said, I've fought for championships in every car I've ever raced and he's he's a supercar's champion. So I I certainly would not say for a moment that it is the driver's fault or that there isn't something wrong with the car, but he still has to carry that pressure into what are already very high pressure qualifying sessions ⁓ in Ipswich. So it'll be it'll be fun to watch from the outside, maybe not so much fun for. speaker-0: Hmm. ⁓ Walk and Shaw TWG is optimistic its B Spec, copyright Stefan Bartholmas, engine will solve the reliability ro reliability woes that have peppered Toyota's maiden supercar season. Walk and Shaw TWG and UK-based engine partner Swindon Powertrains have delivered updated valve train components in the lead-up to the all-important Bathus 1000. The first updated engine was completed in time for ride day duties in Perth on Monday before a full day of testing on the Benz West Circuit. Chaz Mostett and Ryan Wood shared driving duties at the South Australian venue while Supercar's representatives, including Chief, ⁓ engine chief, I should say, Craig Haystead, were there as well. We're really happy to have ticked off five hundred and twenty kilometers with no issues, Walk and Shore CWG Team Principal Carl Foe told Speed Cafe at the bend. We also did two hundred fifty kilometres on Monday at the Rye Day, which is a terrible duty cycle for the engine and something we've not been able to do for a while. I mean it could have been worse on the ride day, Carl. I could been the passenger at all of those Trips around Barber Gallow, but I wasn't. So yeah, very interesting. Yeah. Tell me this. There is fan concern over the fact that they've gone and basically done a lot of laps around. I know it's only the West Circuit, but the bend is the bend is the bend. Is that a an advantage, an unfair advantage? speaker-1: ⁓ I they were running on the West Circuit, which they're going to use for the Ben five hundred. There you go. ⁓ so but I ⁓ I I don't really see it as a like supercars wouldn't allow it to happen if there was a huge performance advantage. So I don't know if there it would have been a case of you're not allowed to touch the setup or whether it was a case of here's the setup you have to put in the car and then not touch it, but they would have been limited on any chassis tuning they could do. Because that would be, you know, doing five hundred kilometers of meaningful testing. Yeah, that'd be a massive performance advantage. But rolling around with a setup that's not representative of what you're going to race with, just to put miles on the engine. Like, what are you what what's Chaz Mossett and Ryan Wood really going to learn? They've done enough laps at the bend. They've raced on this well, Ryan Wood might not have, but they've raced on this ⁓ West layout before. ⁓ it's No, but it's again, if you can't tune the car, what are you learning? speaker-0: Not in this car, but speaker-1: Like there's you can't you can't improve if you can't improve the car, then there's not much to learn. It is just miles. So I think it's not something that anyone has flagged as an issue in the paddock. And again, if we go back to the to the Kai Allen penalty situation when teams are unhappy with something, they will be very quick to say that. So no, it's it's it's not a there's absolutely no performance gain for it. ⁓ at the same time, it's critically important for Supercars and Toyota and obviously it's some oligation team, Walking Shore, T W G racing, to to get on top of these niggling valve train issues, particularly with Bathurst coming up. ⁓ so yeah, it it's it's far more important that they can put the miles on the engine and build their confidence that this B spec package, ⁓ maybe it's Bartholomew's spec. Maybe that's what the B stands for. Although Stefan might want to see how well it goes before he puts his name to it. But ⁓ but yeah, they you know, it's it's it's it's it's important for them to get on top of this and make sure that there's Ten motors ready for the five Supras heading into the to the Bathus one thousand. speaker-0: Yeah, I mean if they really wanted to put it under real stress, they should have just said, Ryan, you drive it all day in the truck assist car because that car is the one that always breaks down. speaker-1: That's good point. Maybe that's what they should have done. speaker-0: If they've had a great day, Team 18 had a pretty shit day ⁓ with the Super Sheep Auto wildcard. they said the after their testing at the bend, it's a little undercooked their testing ⁓ schedule. The number 15, Chevrolet Camaro, was at the South Australia circuit to ticking off Bailey Hall's allocated test ahead of his outing in the sprint cup finale at Ipswich this month. ⁓ he only completed an estimated 20 uninterrupted flying laps throughout the day as the team traced an electrical issue. Endurio Cup co-driver Craig Leance was on hand to complete his permitted ten laps, but didn't even get to sit in the car due to the interruptions. ⁓ admit that the team was unable to complete any pit stop practice while Hall missed out on a planned list of setup changes. The wildcard will have a second test outing as part of the full field day at Queensland Raceway following the Ipswich Super four forty. Not ideal. Not ideal. speaker-1: No, definitely not. I mean that's that opportunity to test on a track where you're going to go racing on in a in a few weeks is massive. So to to miss out on those miles is ⁓ is yeah, that that that will hurt that program, there's no doubt about that. And ⁓ even for Craig Lands, like he was only ⁓ as you said, permitted to do the ten laps because it was Bailey Hall's test, not not his test. But you know, Craig isn't doing a whole lot of racing. So even ten laps, ⁓ to just kind of, you know brush a bit the rust off, I reckon he would have been pretty keen to do that. So ⁓ yeah, that's ⁓ that certainly has put them on the back foot a little bit. ⁓ the good news is that, you know, ⁓ Bailey does get that whole race meeting at Ipswich to to go out there and and get some laps. ⁓ so yeah, but still less than ideal, no doubt about that. speaker-0: ⁓ SRO Motorsports Australia wants next year's GT World Challenge Australia returned to Mount Panorama to mark the start of a long term agreement. Bathurgenal Council has opened the doors to a fifth event at the Iconic Circuit, which will act as the Shannon Super Series ⁓ sorry, Speed Series. ⁓ finale next year. SRO Motorsports Australia boss Ben McClellan said his team would tender for the fifth event. He said for us as event promoters, any time you've got the opportunity to hold an event at Bathurst, it's a really big thing for our business. So it's definitely not a stopgap and a one year plan, he said. GT World Challenge Australia last raced at Mount Panorama in twenty four as part of the Bathurst International. ⁓ good times. Next year's speed series finale at Mount Panorama is slated for october twenty ninth to thirty one. I have some questions for you. speaker-1: ⁓ whatever. speaker-0: What do you reckon Bathis Council's tick of approval, like what what do they want to see from this event that would give them a an indication they want to go for five? Would it be crowd dependent, do you reckon? speaker-1: I honestly don't know. I don't know what their metrics are that they base you know, whether an event works or not. I can't imagine it's gonna be draw a massive crowd. ⁓ but I'm guessing that there's but ⁓ you know, I guess you have to pay for this spot on the track, right? So it it may be as simple as as long as the check clears, then life's good and it can continue. ⁓ I d but I don't I don't have a full handle on the funding model. ⁓ so I'm not a hundred percent sure. But, you know, as I've said in the past, I just nothing against GT World Challenge Australia or SRO or whatever. I just struggle to get get excited about this. It just doesn't, you know, it I I feel like it's exactly the same as having another a supercar sprint event at Bathurst as well. Like there is the big GT race at Bathurst. And maybe it should just be left at that. But anyway, this is there's people smarter than me involved in these decisions and ⁓ they obviously feel it can work, so let's wait and see what happens. speaker-0: Don't say that. gut feel I think at the least there should be a change of date. I just don't think something that does feel very good three weeks. Yeah. After the one thousand. And look, I know everyone's gotta sort their calendars out, but that to me seems like it might be a better idea to find a different slot in the calendar for a speaker-1: No, definitely. Feeling I I hate to say it but a little underwhelming to me that that's kind of yeah, that that that's the the big fifth event at Bathurst. But you know, maybe it'll work. I just sort of you know ⁓ ma look, maybe this is the something to give particularly the G T three part of that whole GT World Challenge Australia program a bit of a kick in the backside and maybe it is gonna get more cars out. And more cars racing. I hope so. ⁓ you know, looking to banks of miles before the twelve hour the next year and that sort of stuff. Maybe that's where it will work because ⁓ because we kind of, you know, we see GT four really pumping at the moment, but you know, there's the the the field numbers for GT three aren't fantastic. ⁓ and they're expensive cars to run and and that something needs to be done to try and get more of them out on track, ⁓ you know, to ensure the long term future of that speed series product because that's meant to be the Halo product. ⁓ and even you look at something like GT four, like these things There's no reason to suggest this is the case, but they can be fads as well. Like y your grid size can drop off really quick for a a whole range of different circumstances. So speaker-0: He is your savage on GT racing. speaker-1: No, I just think that I I don't think it would be any great secret in the SRO Motorsports Australia office that it would be nice to have a bit better balance between GT three and GT four in terms of field numbers. You know, ideally you'd have thirty cars in both of them, but it does feel a little precarious at that kind of what is it, like twelve, thirteen cars for G T three? speaker-0: I totally agree. I totally agree. Although I wonder whether a date like this maybe might tempt overseas teams to bring a car over and leave it here until although it is six months, is it's not even close enough. speaker-1: It's long time and now they've kind of and they've built in this additional testing as part of the G of Bathurst twelve hour as well. So you know, you know, you can pay your money and get your extra day of running ⁓ on the Thursday of the twelve hour. So that probably de incentivizes teams from doing something like that. So but for local crews, it could be a pretty good way to to to get some miles or to give drivers a chance and sort of see, you know, is this someone we should have in our twelve hour lineup? So maybe that's the that's the silver lining as to how how or why this might work. speaker-0: Hmm. Audi F1 boss Mattia Bonotto has played down speculation linking Carlos Sainz and or Oscar Piastri to his team, insisting he's entirely satisfied with his current driver peering of Nico Holkenberg and Gabriel Bortoletto. ⁓ McLaren's Piastri has been touted as a potential future target for Audi if he decides to walk away from the woking squad or if he is replaced by four-time champion Max Verstappen. Bonotto was quoted in an interview with Racing News 365, stating, They are two very fast drivers, and I am happy because they are fast drivers, both of them ⁓ would be a good lineup. The fact that other drivers are linked to our team I can be very happy because he it is showing the credibility. Our project is improving. Kind of if Oscar did this, it would be Daniel to Renault-ish. speaker-1: In the short term, yes, but I don't think that's actually on the table. This is all kind of there's just gonna be this swirling speculation about all this stuff, but I still I still think the smart money is on Max Verstappen being in a Red Bull next year and ⁓ Oscar Piatri. speaker-0: More more, I think you're right, mate. Yeah. I think that's that's the way it's gonna go. ⁓ in probably the biggest story in Motorsport, I just want to throw this in there in the past seven days. Lewis Hamilton has shared first photos of his new puppy, Halo. ⁓ he's named Halo because Lewis said that if he's in a car crash in his road car, he's gonna throw the dog in front of him to save him. So that's ⁓ yeah fair enough too. Killies and Aussies overseas will start with IndyCar, who was at Portland. Qualifying saw Will Power in third, Scotty Dixon 11th, Scott McLaughlin 13th, and Marcus Armstrong 20th. In the race, Will grabbed a podium, finishing third. Scott McLaughlin was seventh. Scottie Dixon 14th, and Marcus Armstrong ran last. I should just chuck in the Indy NXT because Lockheed Hughes grabbed second at Portland, while Jack Beaton, fellow Aussie, ran 10th. And in the points, those guys are fifth and eighth, respectively. So Will Dunto those guys. ⁓ in NASCAR they went to Iowa Speedway for the long range missile of 400, where Shane Van Gisbergen qualified back on row twelve. And then in the race he spun on ⁓ lap ninety-one of three hundred and fifty. Ninety-one of three hundred and fifty. Jesus Christ, ABL. ⁓ and he went on to finish thirtieth in a date to forget the race was won by Ty Gibbs. In Moto GP, the sprint race on Saturday saw Jorge Martin take the victory as Aprillias grabbed the top three spots. Mark Marquez was a dismal ninth position after tire issues. Moto two, Santa Agius could only crack P11 in qualifying, but had a race to forget, falling to 20th with bike issues and never improved from there. And in Moto 3, Joel Kelso Showed some ⁓ pace. He grabbed 10th in qualifying, and in the race he climbed to sixth, ⁓ going the right direction there, Joel. You just gotta list them in the order you think they should be in before I give you the next one. Hard to explain, but easy to understand when you speaker-1: No, I th we got it wrong last time, so well I got it wrong last time, so I think we should be fine this time around. speaker-0: Right. So our first category. Best co driver in this year's Enduros. One to five. Yep. Nick Percat, where are you gonna put him? speaker-1: ⁓ strong start. speaker-0: Yes. speaker-1: Feels hard to put him number one straight up, but I'm kinda Nah, let's put him number one. Let's do it. speaker-0: Okay. ⁓ so you could need perk a number. Where are you gonna put Scott Pie? speaker-1: I'm actually very nervous. I feel like if I don't put him second, I'm gonna get even that may it may may raise a mention on on one of our friendly ⁓ fellow podcasts. ⁓ he does a good job, but I f I I'm I feel like I'm not being anywhere near strategic enough here. So let's put him three. speaker-0: Next person Richie Stanaway. speaker-1: Man, he really could do anything. That's ⁓ those B R T cars are cool. Well they can speaker-0: Former winner. ⁓ here we go. Seven speaker-1: ⁓ if it rains, I'd be he would be number one. ⁓ this is ⁓ you really let's I'm gonna put him I'm gonna put him fourth. Interesting and I'm make and I'm probably gonna regret it. speaker-0: Okay, the next one. So you've got one, three, and four taken up. Yep. Next one. Craig Lowndes. speaker-1: It's always a question of whether he's actually a co-driver or a primary, but for the for the sake of the the ⁓ I I'll put him I'll put him I'll put him at fifth. Let's let's be honest. He's he's like a a supercar's legend. ⁓ still incredibly fast for his for his age, very experienced, but you know, you would think there's a lot of fast drivers out there. I feel like I'm really to get hosed on second here somehow. I feel like you've got a nasty surprise waiting for me. speaker-0: Reuben Goodall has grabbed second in your list as well. speaker-1: Okay. Well that's I don't I don't mean to be mean to to to Ruben. I'd love to see Tommy have an absolutely Tommy Randall have a blinder of a enduro campaign. So ⁓ so yeah, all right, let's ⁓ let's go with that. speaker-0: ⁓ best first corner in Australian motorsport. Ooh. Okay. Hell Corner. speaker-1: See, I guess it's what do you mean by best? I guess maybe that's my decision. Like is it Is it I mean that it's it's a great it is a good first corner, let's put it second. speaker-0: That's your choice, mate. Santa Shekane at Adelaide. speaker-1: man, that is good too. Trying to think of where what's gonna where the banana peel is sitting here on this one. Let's I I lo I'll put it I'll put it first. I love watching cars fly through there. speaker-0: Yeah, I don't I think that's a good choice. ⁓ Brabham Corner, Albert Park. speaker-1: ⁓ is that what the first sort of two corners there is called, is it? It's what it's called. Yeah, that's ⁓ I'm glad yeah, if you hadn't said what circuit it is, I would have been very confused. ⁓ you can see some all right, let's let's put it fourth. speaker-0: Check that, but I'll believe that. It's a big stacks there in in the time. Moffat Turn, Sydney Motorsport Park. speaker-1: ⁓ that's a beauty. Well what have we still got? What's still available? Two and five. Yeah, let's put that let's put that two. speaker-0: You got two and five. Geez, poor old turn one at Basketville. Doesn't have a name and you put it in fifth. So that's fair enough. You probably got that about right. Yeah. ⁓ all right. Best livery of supercars in 2026. speaker-1: Okay. speaker-0: B R T liquamoly. speaker-1: See this one is I I I struggle with because it's so good but it would be so much better with black wheels and it makes me upset. Every time I see it, I just it makes me angry. ⁓ but it's still pretty good, so let's put it second. speaker-0: They're The DJR Yellow Shell Mustangs. Yeah, I like that. ⁓ Dave Reynolds Snowy River Caravans car. speaker-1: Yeah, it's number one. Mm. It looks all right. It's good we'll we'll stick at fourth. speaker-0: Aaron Seaton, MSR Superior Crane's Peter Jackson Retro Livery. speaker-1: Yeah, well that's going on whatever highest is left. Was that third or second? speaker-0: Yep, third. Yeah. Yeah. Which leaves Cameron Hills Rest Point Country Club. speaker-1: I think I'm figuring this game out. I'm starting to work it out. speaker-0: Well good luck with this next one. The best TV motorsport pundit. Alright. Yep. Ted Kravitz. speaker-1: ⁓ god. ⁓ fiftieth. speaker-0: Fifth? Yeah. Yeah. Frosty Winterbottom. speaker-1: ⁓ ⁓ we'll go with fourth. speaker-0: James Courtney. speaker-1: I'll go with third. speaker-0: Craig Lowndes. speaker-1: Well, I guess he's guarding second. I would probably have had maybe a J C just ahead of C L and yeah, anyway, all right, he's second. speaker-0: And so what number one's left is it? It not in my books would Jack's Villeneuve be number one, but ⁓ it's a brave choice from you and good for you. speaker-1: It's gonna be David Croft, isn't Probably shouldn't have taken that victory lap after the last one. speaker-0: All right. Biggest drop kick in world motorsport. So number one is the biggest drop kick, number five is the least drop kick. All right. Stefano Domenicali. speaker-1: Well, I would like to get a pass to the Grand Prix next year. So I'll put him fifth. speaker-0: Muhammad bin Salaem. speaker-1: Well, I would like to get a pass at the Grand Prix next year, I'll put him fourth. speaker-0: Flavio Brigatori. speaker-1: mean he's not without his charms, Flavio. He's all right, so let's put him we'll put him third. speaker-0: Ralph Schumacher. speaker-1: ⁓ he's these are odd. I see probably shouldn't be Yeah no, so he's go he goes second. So this is just how this is playing out. speaker-0: You've got two and one left. ⁓ and number one, so the biggest drop kick in world motorsport? Yep. Stefan Bartholomew. Come on. It's very cruel from you. Just because he got a bunch of freebies the other day at the bend that really turned on him. speaker-1: The shoe fit. If there's only ⁓ the yeah, there's only he's he's not gonna cost me a pass of the Grand Prix, I'll tell you that right in. So that's ⁓ that's fine. I need that I need that hardcut. speaker-0: Right our last one. Best drivers never to win a bathist. speaker-1: ⁓ did we have not d had this one? No, no, we've just we've had this as a discussion point before, I think, in something else. But anyway, all right, yep, let's go. speaker-0: Came orders. speaker-1: I'll put him second. speaker-0: Brock Faney. speaker-1: He's gonna win bathists. He's gonna win apes of speaker-0: Yeah, but right there. speaker-1: All right. ⁓ I'll put him I'll put him third because he's had less cracks at it than Cam has. speaker-0: Okay. One of the great blokes of Australian motorsport, Stevie Johnson. speaker-1: ⁓ well I'll put him I'll I'll put him in. speaker-0: Fifth. So you've got two, three, and five taken. Yep. David Thexton. speaker-1: Well he can he's gonna go forward. speaker-0: Well that gives you the right one for number one 'cause it's Greg Murphy. I mean No, he won't bathast. What are you talking about? Greg All right, I'm gonna fill one in there. Dougal McDougal. Unlucky. He's the best driver never to win a bath. Championship, yeah. Yeah. Anyway. All right, that was good. We'll do that again s when we're on a down week. speaker-1: I think with Greg Murphy you're thinking had didn't win a championship. I'm glad I'm glad you're the one that ⁓ completely ⁓ buried it up this week. Not like last time. speaker-0: to ⁓ Stefan Bartholomew's when you give him a call later on tonight and try and smooth things over. Alright we'll come back. We'll get to a break and we'll come back with rear of grid including I can't wait for one of these credit or shredded for credit or noise. Winter could spell bad news for your vehicle's battery. Here are three maintenance tips from the battery gurus at RNJ Batteries. 1. Avoid frequent short trips to keep your battery at a healthy state of charge. 2. Keep the battery terminals clean and corrosion free. 3. Avoid running your accessories with the engine off for too long. If your battery is three years or older, it might be time to get it tested for free at your local RJ Batteries. RJ Batteries Power like nothing else. Welcome back to Rear of Grid. ⁓ Been a little bit vacant in the ⁓ Discord, not gonna lie, AVL got a few things going on, but every time I go in there I'm like, Jeez, I've got to go back about fifteen pages to hear what the what these people are talking about. So ⁓ speaker-1: It is a it'll it it's it is a fun way to kill Yeah, there is a it is a fun way to kill a bit of spare time. Not that any of us in our lives get heaps of it, but sometimes it is fun to just dip back in if you haven't if you've had a busy day and haven't been able to really stay up on the wheel in there, you go back and you go back and see what people are talking about and throw some thoughts in there. It's whole bunch of fun. So you really should sign up if you've been thinking about it. As we said last week, you know, the feedback we get from people that come in is I've been toying with this idea for a while and I'm and I'm so glad I'm here. So ⁓ So yeah, I could see the motor GP chat was going pretty harder. speaker-0: And they're a welcoming group too. You don't have to sit back and sit on your hands and just say nothing because the moment you lob you're encouraged to join the conversation, which is really important too, because I've been to other places where you're almost shit scared to say anything. So speaker-1: And there's a bit of ribbing, but it's all very friendly and accepting. And that's what you want. You need you need a little bit of that as well. That's what makes it fun. speaker-0: Couple of blokes here. Cherry right for some river, let's be honest. we're going to do so. If you want to do that, fctn.com, follow the links from there. Hit me up if you can't get in, I'll I'll show you how to do it. ⁓ we're gonna do six credit or shredded. So I'm gonna make a statement. You tell me if you agree or disagree with a credit or a shredded, we'll come back after we're done all six. Number one, street races are held around the world by top tier racing series. In Australia, it will only ever be supercars that will be able to host a street race on a national level. speaker-1: ⁓ yeah, credit. speaker-0: Number two, Supercars will again race for cash at the BP Adelaide Grand Grand Final. Every time I see Adelaide and Grand, I always pronounce it Grand. ⁓ Grand Final with a fifty thousand dollar prize on the line in this Friday sprint. Fans don't care if drivers are racing for large amounts of cash. speaker-1: I see the point, but I'm going with Shredd. speaker-0: read it as well. Number three, Matt Payne is now more likely than not to stay at Grove Racing. speaker-1: That is a fascinating one. I'm gonna still go on the shredded side of this right now. speaker-0: Yeah, we'll get back to that in a minute. I'll say shredded as well. It was reported this week that Arvid Linblad was flagged or has flagged an ambition to race supercars. Fans should be marking their twenty thirty six diaries now with anticipation. speaker-1: ⁓ how I'll go with thread. speaker-0: Right it. Number five, media identities have this week been dog whistling about the final system being unfair and not finding our true champion in supercars. Twenty twenty five showed that a final series makes the end of the year a must-see racing, and the champion is no less deserving of the title than their champion AFL or NRL teams. speaker-1: Yeah, credit. speaker-0: Credit. Number six. McLaren should prioritise Lando Norris for the second half of the season, as suggested by Sky Sports F one commentator David Croft. speaker-1: I shred it. speaker-0: All right. Street races. I can't see anyone else being able to money. speaker-1: It's just so expensive to be able to do it. Yes, we see events, motorsport events held on on what are usually public streets, but they're not big race events, you know? You got your they do the Round the Houses events over over here in in WA and they have the Liburn Sprints and all sorts of and the with Geelong, there's the Geelong one and that sort of stuff. So there there's there's events out there, but like yeah, not a full scale ⁓ yeah, big crowd event racing event that really Yeah, it's it's only ever gonna be supercars. And that's just an economy of scale sort of thing. Like yes, more s categories do it in in the US, but they've got a lot more people and a lot more ⁓ money to be spent in professional sport and a lot more pr pr ⁓ professional motorsporting codes. So that's just that's just how it works. speaker-0: I would love to see it only because I feel like that would then say that motorsport is extremely strong in this country. That's the only reason that I think it would be great to see, but I just don't think in my lifetime I will see it. So ⁓ supercars will race for cash, fans don't care if we're racing for cash. speaker-1: Yeah, I I think it makes the race more interesting and that's a benefit to fans. So them there might not be like this direct care about who wins fifty grand, but it just makes it more interesting. And it does give the drivers something, particularly, you know, an event where there's only four drivers that are in the running for the championship. Not that I think that ever matters because you usually got to Adelaide with one, if you were lucky, two drivers still in contention for the championship. And we still see great racing there. So but it does kind of just offer this this talking point. And to be honest, if you're a driver, you are gonna be thinking about fifty grand. Like that's a decent decent payday. So I think it makes the the I think it makes that race more interesting and therefore that's a benefit to fans. So even if it's an indirect win for them, it is still something that that they will ultimately care about because it makes the race better. speaker-0: Yep. ⁓ yeah. I look I I I see the point too, but I think it probably does give a little bit of jeopardy to blokes that are racing there and say maybe it's a better for the fans anyway. So ⁓ I'm willing to lean on that side more than the other side. Matt Payne's now more likely to stay at Grove. speaker-1: ⁓ yeah, that's a really interesting question. And I guess without being on the inside of the negotiations, we don't really know. We know where things kinda stood. We knew what ⁓ was being considered by the Matt Payne camp, led by his manager, Michael Patrizzi. ⁓ we know that there was, you know, some tension between him and the Grove Racing Squad, and it did feel like a foregone conclusion that either at the end of this season had contract negotiations gone a different direction or at the end of next season he would move. And that's probably still the favorite outcome if you were putting it in some sort of, you know, betting sense, I guess. But it certainly does feel like there's been a bit of a cooling of the tensions. It was something I actually spoke with Matt about ⁓ for an interview that was in the role models podcast that we do with authenticity. And he talked and he was very candid about the fact that ⁓ because again I I made the point to him that it in Darwin it felt like ⁓ speaker-0: Yeah. speaker-1: Trizzy was in every garage except the Grove Racing Garage, and then he was, you know, seen in the Grove Racing Garage and and seemingly getting on quite well with the Groves over the Perth weekend. So ⁓ I asked Matt about that and he was quite open about the fact that, yeah, you know, that th things have calmed down, everyone's getting on pretty well. ⁓ to me, it's not even about all of that. It is just about those grove racing cars are so incredibly fast. And that is ultimately what a racing driver wants more than Pots of gold and whatever else, like a really fast racing car. So, you know, I I that that that is the thing that I ha I think has the potential to sway it. There's still a lot end of twenty twenty eight's ⁓ sorry, the end of twenty twenty seven is still a long way away. You know, like that's still a a lot could change. So ⁓ so who knows? But yeah, it's a it's a very interesting question and it will be one to watch as the as this year and then next year evolves. speaker-0: Yeah, I'm interested in that. And as you said, that ⁓ role models interview with you and Will and Matt is a real good watcher. You should go and watch that if you haven't speaker-1: Yeah, it was it it was a fun it was a fun ⁓ it was a fun chat. ⁓ and ⁓ yeah, probably one of those chats you can only do on a ride day when drivers are pretty keen to be able to do anything except stand around the garage. ⁓ but ⁓ but yeah, it was ⁓ it was good. So yeah, ⁓ and ⁓ to just to quickly back over what I was just saying, that's obviously completely ignoring the whole international component of these negotiations and what Matt wants to do outside of supercars and if if, you know So th I I'm talking about on the very surface level of, you know, right now if you had to be in a Grove Racing car or a team eight in Kamara, absolutely no offence to team eighteen, but you're taking a Grove Racing car because you could make that comparison about every other car in the entire field. So on that surface level, that's where the little bit of doubt just sticks in your mind of i it does this guy really want to walk away from that situation if that is still the situation at the end of next season. But there's all these other factors including, you know, i his ambitions ⁓ outside of Australia. And New Zealand that have to ⁓ considered as well. speaker-0: Somewhere on the grid or maybe not even on the grid. There's another driver. And off you fuck, Matt. No dramas. Go to team eighteen. Super keen to get into that other seat. speaker-1: Yep. ⁓ there'll be not ⁓ there will be no shortage of people will be made. Yeah, that'll be sharpening up the C V if ⁓ you know, if they feel like that C bike w will become available. Like ⁓ you'd be smart to be doing your ⁓ doing your prep work with ⁓ with Steve and Brendan Grove right now, I reckon. speaker-0: You thinking Harvard Limbled? He might be the one? speaker-1: Well, there you go. Well that's that that's what you're saying. I hadn't seen those reports. So is that what he wants to do? speaker-0: ⁓ you just mentioned it in a sentence and that become ⁓ Harvid's said that he might want to race supercars one day. He's eighteen, by the way. speaker-1: I went shredded because we've heard this story enough times before, but he has at least got his first shunt out of the way after ⁓ after his ⁓ that ⁓ Audi DTM car crashed into him at the Goodwood Festival of Speed when he was in the ⁓ when he was in the the ⁓ that Mustang that Ford owned so at least he's got his first supercars crash out of the way. speaker-0: You wouldn't have thought the an F one car ⁓ driver would crash at Goobu, but here we are. Media identities talking about the final series and saying that's not a true reflection of the champion for the year. I just think it is. In most sports, this is the way we do it. No, no, this is motorsport. God knows, I've heard all this before as well. I just think it's a fantastic system. And I really liked last year and it gave us lots and lots of drama and talking points and Interest and intrigue, even at the Gold Coast when Brody kept going on a push lap with a spoiler under his front wheels, only because he's thinking about getting in the finals. speaker-1: Yeah. No, I I'm still, you know, I I've always been a big fan of it and I'm still sticking to my guns on it. I like it. ⁓ you know, I guess you're gonna have a year like this year where you you you we potentially could have had some sort of Matt Payne, Brock Feeney, Brody Kastecki battle to the end on a traditional point score, but ⁓ I still just think it's a good thing. And I I I I I I don't I can't look back at Adelaide last year and think, nah, that would have been heaps better if Brock Feeney had gone there with the title sealed up or had or had sealed it up on the Friday night through a sheer mathematical equation. I just can't my brain just can't compute that to be to be something that that we should consider. So and this whole like ⁓ well in AFL NRO you don't have to race you know you don't have to compete against other teams on grand final day. Well I just think that makes it more impressive. And more things that's that's just makes it speaker-0: NRL have to put up with like referees and injuries and things like that. Like there's all variables. It's not saying that it's the same, but I just think the system is a great one. I really enjoyed it last year, so speaker-1: Yep, yeah, no, I'm still I'm still a fan. I'm I'm st I'd I'd need a much bigger sample size of it not doing what it's meant to do before I I'd turn on it. I'm still I'm still riding there with it. speaker-0: McLaren should prioritize later. speaker-1: Well, they won't anyway. They won't even do it like they they're just it just goes against Andrea Stella's entire DNA to prioritize any and they and and they they literally prioritise Oscar in the last race. Like that's so there's there's not really a case study for it. speaker-0: Yeah. throwing him out in the traffic. That was very good of him. speaker-1: Well, that's that's when he wanted a pit. speaker-0: What a priority. Whisper of the Week. I I don't know even if is this done, but I've heard Alonso is about to get a new deal at Aston for two more years, around forty million dollars for the two years. He's actually put down stipulations from Honda and it will be announced. If it hasn't been announced yet, to be announced soon. And you heard anything about that? speaker-1: Well, it's I I I don't actually know what his contract situation is, but I'm guessing it's kind of a rolling sort of deal. What's how long's he at Aston now? speaker-0: ⁓ I think Jesus played halfback for Jerusalem. speaker-1: Yeah, it has been a while, hasn't it? So I mean at the end of the day, like obviously they they rolled out the big aero and chassis upgrade for Hungary and it definitely made it it was a an improvement on the chassis side of that of that Aston Martin. ⁓ the the the upgraded Honda engine will roll out at Zanvoort. ⁓ so you would still if you're Fernando Alonso right now, at the age that he's at, like, would you really walk away from an Adrian Newy car? No but would you would you just go, ⁓ nah. Like obviously this hasn't gone well, so I'll assume that there's no chance that, you know, this guy isn't gonna design a brilliant F1 card. Like it'd be worth speaker-0: Yeah, that'll be good fun. speaker-1: And he's so good at like protecting his own credibility, ⁓ and his own image that he can weather these storms. No one goes, ⁓ Alonzo's no good. Mm-hmm. You know, like except me, obviously I'm the only person. And that's not what I think. We've been through this a million times before. I don't think he's no good. I think he's a deserving two time world champion, but only that. But ⁓ yeah, you would just he's got nothing to lose but to hang around for a couple more years and see if Adrian speaker-0: Have they got anything to lose by signing him? speaker-1: Not really. Like he's still among the better of the drivers on the grid. Like, you would still back him to in the right car to go out and win races. He's still good enough to do that. You know, if you give him a brawn two thousand and nine spec advantage of a car, it's not like he's not gonna go out there and win the world championship, is he? He would. He definitely would. So I reckon it's I think there's absolutely no risk of him going anywhere 'cause it ⁓ that you just can't make it make sense that you would either retire or go to an Alpine or something like that. But why would ya? Adrian knew his design on thing. Yes, it didn't go well this year, but he just wouldn't put it put it past him to get it right next year. speaker-0: Yeah, I agree. Well, mate, that might do us for this week. ⁓ don't forget you can follow the show on all the social media at FCTTN Podcast. We can read ABL's Excellent Work over at speedcafe.com where they break all the big motor sport news first. I've been former legend, he's been ABL.
