- 1:02I'm 24. When I was contemplating, should
- 1:06I do a podcast and what I'ma Do a podcast on?
- 1:10But God has been blessed. And I have been, I have been
- 1:13getting great feedback. I Hrp back appreciate the
- 1:17feedback that I received on the last one when I talked about
- 1:22reset 420, 23, I think my sister Barbara called a shout out to
- 1:28her for posting how it really blessed her.
- 1:32And I had a lot of things hit home for her and I believe in
- 1:36resetting for 2023, all of us got something we can reset and
- 1:42start doing, but I am so delighted.
- 1:45Dated today to have a guest. Y'all notice, I'm having guests
- 1:50that I never met before seeing like my sister, which was my
- 1:55first one. I think that was a only
- 1:58somebody. Let me think.
- 1:59Let me think. Yes?
- 2:01No, yes, I am. But God, I prayed, when I
- 2:05started doing this, and I said, when I want to invite guests, I
- 2:10pray and ask God to God's, you lead me to people that leave
- 2:13them to me. And Let them be a bitter lesson
- 2:17because I want them to add value.
- 2:19That's the whole purpose of the podcast is not about me but that
- 2:22people will listen and that they will receive a blessing that it
- 2:26will add value to their life. I have this beautiful young lady
- 2:31with us today and I'm going to introduce her, her name is Mary.
- 2:36Mom Mom. Yes they're Mambo.
- 2:42She's a mother of three. Beautiful children.
- 2:45She's a sexual assault survival, and a self-published author with
- 2:52a co-author Guru takes Burns. Is that correct?
- 2:58The Run takes a ride, takes burn the co-author and the day and I
- 3:04episode number or I type, it would be I promise, I promise.
- 3:13Wow, I promise. Haven't read Mary book.
- 3:18The title is so befitting. His sober feeling.
- 3:23It was a book. I just told her it was a book
- 3:25that, you know, some people can read it all at once, but it was
- 3:29one that I had to read put down Reaper down.
- 3:32It is so much, like a movie mirror.
- 3:37I'm so proud of you. I remember me first.
- 3:40Reached out to me that you want to write a book and you had
- 3:45already start writing things and getting it together and how you
- 3:49did not procrastinate use consistent and you did it and
- 3:55look at her book I promise I promise what a blessing.
- 4:01What a blessing, what up lesson and and writing a book is not
- 4:05easy. It really is, you know it brings
- 4:09out Out some hard places. It makes you think it takes you
- 4:13bad, you have to go back and and dig up a lot of things and a lot
- 4:18of memories and all of that. I'm sure reading that book that
- 4:21this that that really wasn't easy for you.
- 4:25You had to relive this, this book, this book, this book and
- 4:30and another interview I did with enter Friday, Breaking the
- 4:35silence. I told her this and I'm telling
- 4:38you this this book is going to be a movie.
- 4:44Yeah, if y'all know what is book need to get to to, come on Lou,
- 4:48let them reach out to me this book.
- 4:52Tyler Perry leave me please here at Allah.
- 4:57Please him was to be this this book that's why I tell in
- 5:02Breaking the silence when you read the bull you get so lost in
- 5:08it. I was like okay, let me just
- 5:10take a deep breath. Put it down and put it back up.
- 5:15When I you all hear her storage, she's not going to tell you all
- 5:18the whole thing about she's going to share, what inspired
- 5:22her to come up with I promise. And how did she arrive at that
- 5:27butt? And she's gonna tell you all at
- 5:29the end, how you can go about getting humble, you need to get
- 5:34the book, everybody need to get the bull because it's, it might
- 5:40not be you. That been in this situation, you
- 5:44might know. Nobody else they've been in the
- 5:46situation and it's so many women that suffer in silence.
- 5:51I say that all the time they afraid to tell their story.
- 5:55But more people are coming out now because of people like mayor
- 5:59that are telling their story that making them more
- 6:03comfortable, the the young lady I was talking about, you know,
- 6:08fried I received so many messages or email that.
- 6:14Wow. That was so a, I wish I was that
- 6:17brave. Oh, this happened to me.
- 6:19This happened to me, it's so many things happen to people,
- 6:24and they go on through life, not sharing it, not sharing it, and
- 6:29it affect, their, it affect their life, as an adult, it
- 6:33affect their, it affect their life in relationships, because
- 6:37they have to learn themselves, find themselves, all of those
- 6:41things. So, ladies, Please get the book.
- 6:47It will you get the book for somebody else?
- 6:49You know, but I'm not gonna keep talking but I'm gonna let Mary
- 6:53come in her own way and tell us tell us about her.
- 6:59How she got started? What inspired her and how did
- 7:01she come up with the topic? I promise.
- 7:05All right, Mary, hello everyone. My name is Mary.
- 7:08My mom like she said. I am a mother of three.
- 7:12I started writing this book and 2019 took me a minute to even
- 7:17decide to write it. I did have someone that I was
- 7:21working with that. Always told me.
- 7:22You need to tell your story. You need to tell him.
- 7:24I'm Your Story. Mr. Thorn Burns is the
- 7:27co-author. He was the only person I've ever
- 7:31told my full story too and I was able to tell my full story.
- 7:37It took me a minute. I think it took us.
- 7:40It's been like three years two and a half three years to put
- 7:44the Gotta finish it and do everything but it I'm not going
- 7:47to lie. It did take me to a dark place,
- 7:49the real dark place because I had to act like she said, you
- 7:52have to ask me up and run through everything that plays on
- 7:58how I came up with the title that new and have to read the
- 8:01book to find out because it's in the book.
- 8:03Why naming a promise? So once you read it and you go
- 8:07through it, you're going to be like ah ha moment.
- 8:09Oh wow. Okay, that's why.
- 8:11But the reason I wrote the book Is because to me, it was
- 8:16therapy. I can't say this.
- 8:19I've never been to therapy, but to me it was therapy to tell.
- 8:23My story is therapy. To help other young ladies and
- 8:28young boys and people young old. It doesn't matter age race and
- 8:33religion. It doesn't matter.
- 8:34Everybody has a story, but for me, it helped me.
- 8:38It helped me just release, help me to breathe and so to help me.
- 8:44Having kids, you always want to do things to protect.
- 8:47And I was so like this with them, I wasn't able to breathe.
- 8:52So once I started writing and just releasing everything that I
- 8:55suppressed. So young.
- 8:57So I suppressed when I was, you know, young 11 years old, I
- 9:00suppress it so bad. I didn't know that I wasn't
- 9:03breathing. So by writing this book, allow
- 9:06me to breathe. Allow me to love love life, love
- 9:10my kids, more than my kids different and seeing different
- 9:13views in a different way. So, like I said, this was
- 9:17therapy for me. I just just everybody have their
- 9:22own way of coping in my way of cocoa or suppressing, like I
- 9:26need to suppress things. If I press it, I forget it, but
- 9:29it doesn't go away. So, writing this book, I did go
- 9:32in the dark spot, and one of the things that I'm gonna give
- 9:37praise to his that mr. Diwan Burns.
- 9:39Always told me that I'm going to.
- 9:43It was powerful too. To me, I'm going to put you, I'm
- 9:45going to bring you walk you to a dark place to walk.
- 9:49You right out. I'm going to bring you to a dark
- 9:52place, but I'm going to walk with you right out.
- 9:54So I worked with like I said, the wrong Burns.
- 9:57And also work with a TM and teca, who's I work with, it's my
- 10:02manager and both of them like together hand in hand, like had
- 10:06me go through everything that I have to go through to write this
- 10:10book, but they was there when I tell you is times.
- 10:13Well, All of us is I'm not writing a book anymore, I can't
- 10:16do it but you know they want into a dark place to walk me
- 10:20straight out. Also keep in mind I want to say
- 10:23this that It's not easy to tell your story to be truthful with
- 10:30your story. Everything that's in the book If
- 10:33I did not remember it. I did not put it in a book if it
- 10:38was to a point where I was like, oh, I think so.
- 10:41Oh, I think this happened. I didn't put it in the book.
- 10:43Everything I have in that book, it's my truth.
- 10:47This is my truth. There's uh no, this is nobody
- 10:50else, true. This is not true.
- 10:51This is not my kids, true. This is not whoever truth.
- 10:55This is Mary, my mood truth. So I just want people to know
- 10:58and understand, it's your truth. Go ahead and express yourself
- 11:02and tell yourself. It's hard.
- 11:04It's really hard. You may keep people what they
- 11:06don't believe you but it doesn't matter.
- 11:08It's your truth. So the most important thing is
- 11:11speaking your truth. And that was my this is my
- 11:13truth. How could you tell could you
- 11:18give a little more information? What information you want to
- 11:23share to let them know? Okay, her story.
- 11:28What, what is what it really is? A story tell a little, take us a
- 11:35little bit. Keep a curiosity.
- 11:38Like, okay, what I know. I know that you said that use a
- 11:43sexual assault survival. Could you could you just kind of
- 11:47tell them a little bit, your age as a child Telltale a little bit
- 11:52to make them want to find out exactly what happened?
- 11:58I walked I was molested from the age of 11 years old to 13 years
- 12:03old from our remember that was molesting me in my own home so
- 12:10for two years I was molested, it goes a little bit beyond that.
- 12:16I don't want to tell too much but it's things that happen and
- 12:18occur that happened that made things come out that I Journey
- 12:23that had to go through. It wasn't just, I was molested
- 12:2642 years in this whole book, it's about being molested and
- 12:30anything like that, it goes different steps again.
- 12:33Like I said I was molested for two years, By a family member
- 12:37that end up. Did they go to jail served his
- 12:42time? It's still in my family.
- 12:45Mmm. And, you know, you know, certain
- 12:50certain things occur in certain things happen that I have to go
- 12:54through and learn and it's just a different Journey from.
- 12:58Like I said, being molested till Going through that as a young
- 13:04age and nobody knows, nobody knows what's going on in my
- 13:08home, with my parents stared, when my parents still in other
- 13:12rooms, couple rooms down, it's still going on for two years
- 13:16that I never told anyone and never spoke.
- 13:19And the, the journey I go through of those two years for
- 13:24being molested, and going through that and having a family
- 13:27victim that they looked at as a child.
- 13:30Also, they still look at him as they They own also.
- 13:34So you know, I go you do you go through the different things of
- 13:37as a kid like why didn't? You know, people may ask me
- 13:40you're not done before where people?
- 13:42Why didn't you tell? You know, when you are sexual
- 13:45assault victim, this is me. I'm going to go speak for Mary
- 13:48that you have the shame, you have way.
- 13:51You don't want to break up the family, you have the
- 13:54embarrassment and then you have the, it's going to be my fault,
- 13:58are they going to blame me for it?
- 14:00So it's different things that you go through.
- 14:02A chow for me that I thought in my head.
- 14:06As in Libya, you got to think I'm 11 years old and what 1992?
- 14:11The, so in that age, that's different from the levels.
- 14:14Now then let me always back then, right?
- 14:17Is that, you know, with that, you know, I've had to go through
- 14:20the, it's my parents don't believe me is my family, go
- 14:23break up, you know, are they really going to do this?
- 14:27And again, this was a family member but it was a step family
- 14:30member. So it was like Is my dad going
- 14:34to believe that his. His relative is doing it to me.
- 14:38I'm a stepchild, you know, and my dad has never claimed me as a
- 14:41stepchild. He's always said his daughter.
- 14:44But, you know, as a 13, 11 Euro, you go.
- 14:46Do those mental things in your head.
- 14:49So I went through all this and then the book explain to me,
- 14:51explain how I went through. All those, how we throw
- 14:54different phases of blaming myself, not thinking no one's
- 14:59going to believe me and you know just everything the Steps.
- 15:03And it's also a surprise in the book.
- 15:05It's a surprise way. You just wow so it is a journey
- 15:09in the surprised. It's not just me.
- 15:10Ben lesnick, I tell my stuff. Excuse me, I'm sorry.
- 15:14I tell my story thinks I'm getting choked up.
- 15:16I tell my story to the best of my ability but I also go in deep
- 15:21and give a part of me that a lot of people didn't even know.
- 15:25Till I want to say 2012, I had a best friend that we have been
- 15:29friends since seventh grade. She never knew I was molested
- 15:33until I came out with my story. So I just to Spain, all this
- 15:37stuff I suppressed for so long that I dealt with myself by
- 15:40myself, you know. I just think and I'm sorry if
- 15:43I'm Ram keep going, no, you're fine.
- 15:46I think as a woman you get to the point where you don't want
- 15:50to hurt you rather not hurt someone you don't want.
- 15:54Hurt, anybody else? So you're going to keep things
- 15:56to yourself. While you read it hurt yourself
- 15:58because you don't want to hurt others.
- 15:59You put other people first. But sometimes you got to be
- 16:02like, you know what? I got to put myself first.
- 16:04I got to make myself happy because if I'm not happy my
- 16:07three kids and I will be happy if not I'm not happy my home not
- 16:10gonna be happy. So that's one of the things that
- 16:13reason why I decided to write this book is because I wasn't
- 16:16happy, no matter how much I smile smile for everyone.
- 16:19I helped everyone inside. I still wasn't happy, so my
- 16:22enemy wasn't happy. So Writing this book released a
- 16:26lot released, a whole lot. Wow!
- 16:29Wow, wow. Can I ask you?
- 16:37At what age was when you told your mom or told a family
- 16:41member. I told him.
- 16:45I'm at 13 years old. Well that's all my mom.
- 16:48What happened to me when I was when I was 13 years old but I
- 16:51couldn't hide it. No more.
- 16:54I couldn't hide anymore. It was I couldn't hide it.
- 16:57No more. It is just had to be told so I
- 16:59couldn't hide it and that person.
- 17:06So yeah that person you know, served his time and so I was 30
- 17:11years old again I'm sorry I was 13 years old when I told.
- 17:15Hmm, okay and see what else I need to ask and is there
- 17:21anything else? Anything else that you would
- 17:24like to share? There's a part of the book that
- 17:27I do that. I do want to share that things
- 17:31in life happen, for a reason. But it doesn't have to Define
- 17:37you. It doesn't have to Define you.
- 17:39I want people to know that I was molested for two years straight
- 17:42and from a family member, but it didn't Define me.
- 17:46It didn't make me where I was out on the streets, I was doing
- 17:49this. I was doing that.
- 17:50That doesn't Define you just because you and I tell this to
- 17:54young ladies and men also because I do work with young
- 17:57adults, I tell them just because what happened to you when you
- 18:01was younger, does not define what happens.
- 18:03You are what goes in when you as an adult, just because this
- 18:07happened, doesn't mean, okay? I'm going to be like this,
- 18:10because something happened to me and I was younger.
- 18:12You make your own choices and tell your story.
- 18:15Like, don't tell your story. If nobody believed you go to the
- 18:19next person. They don't believe you go to the
- 18:21next person at some point. Don't just hold it in because
- 18:24you do like me where you suppressing everything is
- 18:27suppressed. I didn't trust, I didn't love, I
- 18:29learned how to love again. So I learn how to be in love
- 18:33again. I know.
- 18:33How to love myself, which is most important.
- 18:36I say that my book has a lot of surprises, but I just want to
- 18:42know when you read the book, be very open-minded, be, very
- 18:45open-minded. And just, I hope that my book
- 18:49can just give other people men and women of time to say, you
- 18:52know what? It's time to tell my truth.
- 18:55That's the whole thing. Just tell your truth and nobody
- 18:58ain't nobody can do nothing to you.
- 18:59That you tell your truth. Ain't nothing else.
- 19:01Worried. Right, right as a mother Mary
- 19:07with you having to go through what you went through, as such
- 19:10an early age. How did how did that make you
- 19:15feel as a mother? You more open with your
- 19:18children? What's the age of try?
- 19:20Know you have some twins? I have twins.
- 19:22That's eight years old boy and girl, okay.
- 19:25And I have a 28 year old son. Wow, so does that, does that?
- 19:33q more open to protecting them and letting them know it's okay
- 19:43to talk and not to be afraid and and hopefully this would be and
- 19:49this would be a lesson to us as parents grandparents or whatever
- 19:54to to, to always to always talk and make the children, feel
- 20:00comfortable that they can keep you in tacos.
- 20:04Very open with my kids, especially my eight-year-old
- 20:06boy. And girl, I'll let them know
- 20:08that. You can tell me anything, I
- 20:12don't care. You know I had that if you if
- 20:15you tell this they not going to believe you tell this your
- 20:18parents not going to believe you because they love me more are
- 20:21you know I tell my daughter and my son, it doesn't matter.
- 20:24Mom is going to believe you. Just tell me, tell me what's
- 20:27going on. Even if you think I'm gonna get
- 20:29mad, I'm not gonna get mad at you.
- 20:30Even if someone tells you you're a mom or your dad or whoever is
- 20:35going to get mad at you even if it's Mom or even if it's Dad it.
- 20:40Matter, till talk, and I talk to my kids.
- 20:43I'm very open with my kids. I talked to him.
- 20:46I tell them, you know, talk to them about the private parts in
- 20:50the things. No, we don't do Secrets.
- 20:52You're not going to tell my kids.
- 20:53Oh, you just don't tell your mom or you don't tell your dad and
- 20:56we're good. We don't do that.
- 20:58They'll come to them. They will tell me.
- 21:01They will come and tell me they'll tell you.
- 21:04So don't don't come. My key is to be like, you don't
- 21:08tell your mom didn't tell you Dad.
- 21:10They don't belong. Can you tell me
- 21:31if you want? You're not going back.
- 21:34I don't let my kids go. Spend the night to other people
- 21:37houses and not anything person that this is me.
- 21:41But it is person but right, I don't know.
- 21:44My kids, I'll just go anywhere to spend a night, two, different
- 21:47family, members house and, and I'm just protective, but before
- 21:51the book I was really protecting you couldn't do this, you can't
- 21:55do that. But again, the book was my
- 21:57outlet, I read to this release did not so much, let loose, but
- 22:02to say, okay I'm releasing so write this, you know, I am still
- 22:07close and really really, I'm closing my 28 years old, my 28
- 22:12year old and so we're good. Good.
- 22:15That's that's awesome. It helped me build a better
- 22:17relationship with him also. Wow, wonderful, wonderful.
- 22:22Like she said there's that's why it's gonna be a movie.
- 22:26This is gonna be a movie because there's a lot of surprises in
- 22:31this book. Just from what she telling
- 22:35about, what she went through at such an early age and her
- 22:39journey, her Journey throughout mayor, was there a time when you
- 22:47Or since your mom found out with us, the time you were, she said
- 22:52that, you know, I noticed you was different or I noticed you
- 22:57was to yourself. What type of what type of child
- 22:59was you prior to this? I wasn't very for what?
- 23:04I don't know. They said I was I've always been
- 23:06quiet, always been a quiet girl. I've always been quiet so I
- 23:10guess that that person was easy, it was easy for them because I
- 23:14was always quiet and to myself. That's all.
- 23:17I've been lady who did the books.
- 23:18She was always quiet. Always quiet it to myself.
- 23:22And my family is close, though. I do have a big thing.
- 23:25Is my family still close to mean, you don't, Michael Perry
- 23:28is closed. So the even though we was close,
- 23:32they still didn't notice. Because maybe, maybe I hit it
- 23:35too much, because of me thinking I'm protecting, I'm protected,
- 23:39certain things. I'm protecting my family because
- 23:42I don't want them to get mad. I don't want them to blame me or
- 23:44whatever the case, but I've always been like a quiet Just to
- 23:48myself her seriously. Wow.
- 23:52Well Mary, this has been awesome.
- 23:55I appreciate your time. I appreciate you coming on.
- 23:58And you also have. Is it a nonprofit organization?
- 24:02I do. I do have sorry.
- 24:05I do have a non-profit is called Pace, public awareness training,
- 24:09education of survivors where I go out and I talk to young men
- 24:12and women. We do have multiple sections,
- 24:15where I do go talk to Two young ladies about different things.
- 24:19It just don't have to be sexual assault, just being a woman and
- 24:23growing up and being aware. And then we also have a section
- 24:27where we have a group of men that go out and talk to young
- 24:29boys and helping them become men.
- 24:32Especially these men that these young boy says, transition from
- 24:35high school to college, just awareness of what you need to
- 24:38pay attention to not to put yourself in that situation.
- 24:41Certain things that she say, no is no if she joking laughing
- 24:44play haha no no just stop. Just cut it off right there.
- 24:49So we had, we did do have two different programs.
- 24:51It's the same thing. It's what pays the nonprofit,
- 24:54but we do work with me and you do work with young women and
- 24:57then we also work with parents, whose been through with kids,
- 25:03with sexual assault. So if you need us to come out,
- 25:06we drop all over. You need us to come out parents,
- 25:09who've been through kids who sexual assault and don't know
- 25:11how to deal with it. Don't know how to deal with
- 25:14anything that's going on, we do. Go through is help them to the
- 25:18kind of cult or just kind of help them understand that child,
- 25:22what they're going through and what they might be going through
- 25:24the whole process. So my again my nonprofits is
- 25:28paid. PA Tes anytime y'all can reach
- 25:32out to me. So yes, ma'am.

- 27:11So but it is a women. Major name women.
- 27:15Majoring in marriage is my platform where I encourage women
- 27:22that are married to not just have a survive and married, but
- 27:26a thriving marriage and then those that Engaged encouraging
- 27:32them to prepare for being a wife before they prepare for the
- 27:37wedding day. You know, once they get engaged
- 27:39all about the wedding date, or whatever, all about getting
- 27:42married. But prepare for being a wife,
- 27:45and then also to those that are in the season of waiting, on God
- 27:49to send a hug to encourage that woman to love you.
- 27:54Find, you know, you, why you waiting on God, to send your
- 27:59Osman, prepare for being a wife. I tell, I tell single women that
- 28:05want to be married. Desire husband live on yourself.
- 28:11Love you find, you know, you because a lot of times, people,
- 28:15such as a situation with you sometime people have been hurt.
- 28:19They have been abusive relationship or other
- 28:22relationships and then they get married, but they never was
- 28:28over. I was hurt and I was pain.
- 28:30Yeah and they they end up bleeding on the person that
- 28:34actually didn't even cut them. Somebody else did thudding.
- 28:37But then this person, this husband now got you and he's end
- 28:41up being the one that has to deal with this.
- 28:45So make sure that you are. He'll make sure your whole make
- 28:49sure you love yourself self. Care is so important.
- 28:54Get to the root of whatever the issue is and your life like so
- 28:58many. People, like, I had several
- 29:02people say, I wish I was brave enough to tell my story and same
- 29:07to same situation, things like this has happened to them.
- 29:12And what person is what parts of older than me?
- 29:19And never she told me I'm the second person that she told it's
- 29:24true and now she feel you know I'm too old now to let it went
- 29:28bad, this long. No you need to help somebody and
- 29:33you know what? I'm sorry, one of the things
- 29:37that I also found out when I put the book out, more men reached
- 29:42out to me for men, reached out to me about being sexually
- 29:47assaulted, then the never. So there's yeah, it's a lot.
- 29:52So more men reached out to me about wow, wow.
- 29:57And then, of course, you know, Women.
- 30:01We women sometimes don't hold things in as long as me, and
- 30:06we'll and then they and then you got something that'll tell the
- 30:11store later on, but they try to be strong and they go on in life
- 30:20and then relationship with with the with these issues that they
- 30:25have suppressed. Yes, yes.
- 30:29Oh, I've I appreciate you sharing your story.
- 30:33I know she didn't get, she didn't get into the book that is
- 30:36for you to find out. I promised these you get them
- 30:40bull, you'll thank me later. Get the book, your thank me
- 30:44later. A lot of surprises in the book,
- 30:47a lot of surprises in the book. A lot of surprised because she
- 30:50couldn't really get deep into the book, but you know her story
- 30:56and like she says is more than the sexual.
- 31:01All right, you'll see that in the, you read that in the book.
- 31:05So get the book ladies, gentlemen, get the book, share
- 31:08the book, and I just appreciate her getting on here, too.
- 31:12Because we want to encourage people to be vulnerable, be open
- 31:17until somebody talk about it. Be what you able to share so you
- 31:22can help somebody else. You know, how many people that
- 31:24are not telling their story? So this would encourage people.
- 31:29So, Amir, I appreciate you. I appreciate you coming on.

- 31:39bless your book. And I know that shadow doubt,

- 31:58came out to tell you came, You tell your story and how you your
- 32:04relief, you feel a relief and you're going around blessing
- 32:08others where they'll be able to just tell their story.
- 32:11Not only having anything to be sexually being sexually
- 32:16assaulted, but whatever, whatever their story is or
- 32:19whatever. The situation is, letting them
- 32:24know that your past doesn't Define you, you know, and I
