Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Israel's prime minister has just finished delivering a fiery speech
- 0:03Speaker 1: at the United Nations General Assembly. The CBC's Willie Lowry
- 0:06Speaker 1: was listening from Jerusalem, and he joins us live. So, Willie,
- 0:10Speaker 1: what did we hear from Benjamin Netanyahu? Yeah, Andrew.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was met by a near
- 0:18Speaker 2: mass exodus of delegates from the General Assembly as he
- 0:22Speaker 2: took the lectern. And fiery indeed. He struck a very
- 0:26Speaker 2: defiant tone. He called the Israeli Defense Forces, the most
- 0:31Speaker 2: moral army in the world. He chastised Western leaders who
- 0:36Speaker 2: have criticized and been critical of Israel's conduct in Gaza
- 0:41Speaker 2: and of Israeli settlement violence in the West Bank, which
- 0:44Speaker 2: he sought to flip on its head. He said that
- 0:47Speaker 2: it was the responsibility of a small, he said, handful
- 0:52Speaker 2: of of juvenile delinquents. He also said that the decision
- 0:57Speaker 2: to go after Iran was an easy one because if
- 1:01Speaker 2: he had not, everyone would be dead. Let's take a
- 1:04Speaker 2: brief listen to some of what he had to say.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Now let me say something that might surprise you. Devastating
- 1:15Speaker 3: Iran's nuclear facilities was hard. It was very hard to do.
- 1:24Speaker 3: But for me, it was one of the easiest decisions
- 1:28Speaker 3: I've ever had to make as Prime Minister. Because if
- 1:32Speaker 3: we hadn't done it, we'd all be dead.
- 1:39Speaker 2: And he also took aim at New York City Mayor
- 1:41Speaker 2: Zoran Mamdani, calling the young mayor an anti-Semite. The two
- 1:46Speaker 2: have been in a bit of a war of words
- 1:49Speaker 2: over the last several months. Mamdani has said he would
- 1:52Speaker 2: like to see Netanyahu arrested. There is, of course, an
- 1:56Speaker 2: international criminal court arrest warrant out for Netanyahu, and he
- 2:00Speaker 2: is keeping his visit to the UN very short this year.
- 2:05Speaker 2: He is not spending the night. The Israeli media has
- 2:07Speaker 2: cited Netanyahu security concerns. So he will be returning to
- 2:12Speaker 2: Israel essentially in the coming hours.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas also addressed the General Assembly earlier today.
- 2:20Speaker 1: What was his message?
- 2:23Speaker 2: Yeah, he did. And he addressed the assembly from Ramallah
- 2:27Speaker 2: because the U.S. denied Palestinian Authority officials entry visas. He
- 2:33Speaker 2: essentially was imploring the international community to make sure that
- 2:38Speaker 2: there was enough land in the West Bank for a
- 2:42Speaker 2: future Palestinian state to be created. Let's take a brief
- 2:46Speaker 2: listen to some of what he had to say.
- 2:49Speaker 4: No lasting security can be built upon the occupation of
- 2:52Speaker 4: another people. and the denial of its legitimate rights. We
- 2:58Speaker 4: have our own national project. Protecting our people from displacement,
- 3:05Speaker 4: preserving our land and its unity, democratically renewing our institutions,
- 3:11Speaker 4: and building our state while remaining committed to international law
- 3:16Speaker 4: and exercising our right to self-determination leading to the realization
- 3:21Speaker 4: of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Abbas also thanked Western countries, including France, the UK and Canada,
- 3:32Speaker 2: for their support, for them holding a meeting on the
- 3:36Speaker 2: very subject of Palestinian statehood earlier this week on the
- 3:40Speaker 2: sidelines of the General Assembly. He also thanked Canada. Canada
- 3:44Speaker 2: pledged this week $ 100 million to help preserve the possibility
- 3:50Speaker 2: of a future Palestinian state.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Willie, thank you. That is the CBC's Willie Lowry, live
- 3:55Speaker 1: in Jerusalem.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Thank you.
