- 0:02- There's a small circle of people who truly
- 0:04- understand what it takes to lead a health
- 0:05- system right now. The decisions are enormous.
- 0:08- The variables are constantly shifting, and the stakes
- 0:11- of getting a call wrong don't stay contained.
- 0:14- That's not a complaint. It's a structural reality.
- 0:17- And it's why the most effective c suite
- 0:19- leaders are deliberate about where they go to
- 0:21- pressure test their thinking.
- 0:22- Becker's fourteenth annual CEO and CFO roundtable
- 0:26- brings together more than 1,500
- 0:28- executive level attendees
- 0:30- and nearly 400 speakers for four days built
- 0:32- around growth, financial sustainability,
- 0:35- workforce strategy, and the leadership questions that don't
- 0:38- have easy answers.

- 0:50- This is Scott Becker with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:53- Podcast.
- 0:54- I'm thrilled today to visit with a brilliant
- 0:56- leader who's with one of the best regarded
- 0:58- health systems in the country.
- 1:00- We're joined today by Roberta Tinch, and Roberta
- 1:03- is the senior vice president of a new
- 1:05- Nova Health System.
- 1:07- She's also the president of the IMVH
- 1:10- in medicine service flight administrator,
- 1:12- and and we'll talk to her about those
- 1:14- roles and her career and a lot more.
- 1:16- Roberta, can you take a moment to introduce
- 1:19- yourself?
- 1:20- I just saw a ranking where Inova was
- 1:22- ranked at the very height of large health
- 1:24- systems in the country. Yes. To take a
- 1:26- moment and talk about
- 1:27- yourself and the pride in Inova and a
- 1:30- little bit about Inova.
- 1:31- Oh, man. You're giving me a lot to
- 1:33- to think about, but thank you so much
- 1:34- for having me. I'm excited to talk about
- 1:36- myself and Inova and and what we're doing.
- 1:39- So, again, my name is Roberta Tinch. I
- 1:41- am the senior senior vice president with Inova
- 1:44- Health System. I've been with our system for
- 1:46- almost seven years.
- 1:48- I serve as the president of the Mount
- 1:50- Vernon Hospital, one of our five acute care
- 1:52- hospitals.
- 1:53- And in addition to that acute care site,
- 1:55- well, I have the opportunity to be the
- 1:57- administrative leader for our medicine service line. And
- 2:00- that has responsibility
- 2:01- across the enterprise
- 2:03- for patient experience and culture and those sort
- 2:05- of things.
- 2:06- Personally, I have nearly twenty years of operational
- 2:10- experience
- 2:11- working on strategy, patient experience, culture development, and
- 2:15- physician relationships.
- 2:17- With respect to Inova, like I said, I've
- 2:19- had the privilege of working here for seven
- 2:21- years, and I can tell you it is
- 2:22- one of the most amazing jobs I've had
- 2:25- because of the culture.
- 2:26- So we are a leading not for profit
- 2:28- healthcare system here in Northern Virginia.
- 2:30- We deliver amazing world class healthcare,
- 2:33- and we are integrated. We have more than
- 2:35- 26,000
- 2:36- team members providing over 4,000,000 patient visits annually.
- 2:41- We have five acute care hospitals, nearly 300
- 2:44- outpatient visits,
- 2:45- clinics,
- 2:46- and robust community cares program. And
- 2:49- as you mentioned, Scott, I'm super, super proud
- 2:51- of the fact that we were ranked by
- 2:52- modern healthcare as the number three healthcare system
- 2:55- in the nation.
- 2:56- And last year, we were ranked by Press
- 2:59- Ganey as a healthcare system of the year.
- 3:02- We're excited about the culture. We're excited about
- 3:04- the people. Like, it truly is a joy
- 3:07- to come to work every day, and we
- 3:08- have great relationships across the entire system.
- 3:12- Thank you. And and and take a moment
- 3:14- on
- 3:15- your career and the evolution at Inova
- 3:19- and sort of what advice might you give
- 3:22- to other emerging leaders coming out of your
- 3:24- career growth and what you've built?
- 3:27- Oh, wow.
- 3:28- Twenty years is a long time to to
- 3:30- reflect on, but I started,
- 3:33- with the system out west, and I can
- 3:35- tell you that
- 3:37- I've seen so many trends change
- 3:39- in health care. And I didn't think I
- 3:41- would see it or be a part of
- 3:42- it, but the opportunity to see the national
- 3:44- landscape change.
- 3:46- I don't have a clinical background, and so
- 3:48- it was very intentional
- 3:50- for me
- 3:51- to sit in the nurses' station, to talk
- 3:53- to the doctors, to understand
- 3:56- the delivery of healthcare
- 3:58- from their lens.
- 3:59- I've also had a very, very specific lens
- 4:02- that I am leading from an administrator.
- 4:04- My background with patients I mean, with family
- 4:07- members who have been
- 4:09- patients and my mother as a nurse,
- 4:13- I very much committed myself to being an
- 4:15- advocate in this space, and that's the lens
- 4:17- that I lead with. So, my advice
- 4:20- to emerging leaders is always figure out how
- 4:23- you can be an asset to your teams.
- 4:25- How do you help your caregivers
- 4:28- reduce barriers, remove
- 4:30- multiple steps so that patient gets the best
- 4:33- of the person and the best of the
- 4:35- system?
- 4:36- And my career has allowed me
- 4:39- to figure out construction and how I create
- 4:41- spaces for patients. And then how do
- 4:44- I think forward to what we're going to
- 4:45- need next, not just what we're having to
- 4:47- deal with today.
- 4:49- So just stay curious.
- 4:51- And and let me ask you a question
- 4:52- about leadership. You also do a tremendous amount
- 4:56- of giving back. You're involved in several charitable
- 4:59- efforts,
- 5:01- in different boards.
- 5:03- You constantly seem to be in the perspective
- 5:05- of both leading and giving back. Talk about
- 5:08- the importance of that to your own psyche
- 5:10- and and into a leader and and and
- 5:12- why that can be important.
- 5:14- Certainly.
- 5:15- I would take it back to, you know
- 5:17- we all have our our origin story as
- 5:19- to why we came into health care, and
- 5:21- mine started in a free clinic in Charlottesville,
- 5:23- Virginia.
- 5:24- And I had the opportunity to work alongside
- 5:27- individuals who said, I need healthcare,
- 5:30- but I don't have the right access.
- 5:32- And I was able to sit next to
- 5:34- providers and pharmacists and complete forms and sign
- 5:37- up people for visits and cardiologists.
- 5:40- I don't think I knew then how impactful
- 5:43- that was, but I knew that I was
- 5:44- making a difference.
- 5:45- And so, I've carried that thread throughout my
- 5:48- work. Okay, yes, I'm going to work in
- 5:50- the delivery of healthcare professionally,
- 5:53- but I cannot lose sight of or be
- 5:55- disconnected from what people are dealing with every
- 5:58- single day.
- 5:59- Being on those boards,
- 6:01- serving in those committees and in those communities,
- 6:03- I get to see what's happening, I get
- 6:05- to hear what's happening.
- 6:07- I get to help other not for profits
- 6:10- create programs,
- 6:12- connect people. Okay, yeah, I'm hearing this
- 6:15- is your issue, and I'm learning this from
- 6:17- my professional. What about how can I help?
- 6:20- But also as a businesswoman,
- 6:22- I'm also able to help those not for
- 6:24- profits make strong financial decisions to keep their
- 6:27- viability
- 6:28- so that they can continue to serve in
- 6:30- spaces that are so meaningful for our health
- 6:32- care industry.
- 6:34- Thank you. And and and take a moment,
- 6:35- Roberta.
- 6:36- When you look at this next year,
- 6:39- what are you most focused on and excited
- 6:42- about as we move forward in this next
- 6:43- year?
- 6:44- Oh, you want me to pick just one
- 6:46- thing. Right?
- 6:47- It it it doesn't have to be one.
- 6:48- No. It could be a few. It could
- 6:50- totally be a few. Because there's so many
- 6:52- amazing things that are happening.
- 6:54- I I the thing that we always have
- 6:56- to stay focused on, it's our people.
- 6:58- Right? And and the person,
- 7:01- the team member,
- 7:03- as a whole person, like, not just at
- 7:05- work, but what they may be dealing with
- 7:07- outside of work. And I keep thinking about
- 7:09- this phrase.
- 7:10- We measure burnout, how well our team members
- 7:13- are feeling with the work that they have.
- 7:15- But I'm also very conscious of the fact
- 7:17- that we're in the space where team members
- 7:19- are
- 7:20- managing aging parents and they're raising families at
- 7:23- the exact same time they're coming to work
- 7:25- and trying to serve patients. They are really,
- 7:28- like, in the midst of it all, this
- 7:30- multigenerational
- 7:30- life we have here. And so not losing
- 7:33- focus around
- 7:35- how are they doing, how do we make
- 7:36- things more seamless,
- 7:38- technology,
- 7:39- good culture, enjoying coming to work. There are
- 7:41- some things that are basics in any industry,
- 7:44- and especially in healthcare where they have emotional
- 7:46- ties, how do we take care of the
- 7:48- person?
- 7:49- But what I'm really, really excited about,
- 7:52- is that here at Inova, we continue to
- 7:54- keep our people
- 7:56- in focus, but we're also saying,
- 7:58- hey, the industry is changing.
- 8:01- How can you bring your innovation,
- 8:03- your ideas
- 8:04- to our care settings, to our processes?
- 8:07- We've got clinical pathways that we're developing. And
- 8:10- it's not me. And as an administrator, it's
- 8:12- the frontline plintech,
- 8:15- the nurse sitting alongside a surgeon and a
- 8:17- hospitalist,
- 8:18- creating a whole new pathway
- 8:20- and then taking that pathway and embedding it
- 8:22- in our EMR. Right? It's not the pathway
- 8:24- that we wrote on a PowerPoint and put
- 8:26- on a shelf, but we live it. And
- 8:29- so the team members could also say, they
- 8:31- take care of me as a person, but
- 8:33- they're also tapping into my intellect to transform
- 8:36- the delivery care. And I'm really excited about
- 8:38- that.
- 8:39- That's fantastic.
- 8:41- And when you look at workforce trends,
- 8:44- where are you seeing the evolution?
- 8:47- Shortages,
- 8:48- where are you seeing that? Are you seeing
- 8:49- them specialists, primary care, nurses, technicians?
- 8:53- What what trends are you watching in the
- 8:55- workforce currently?
- 8:57- There's not one particular area that stands out
- 9:00- for me in terms of vacancy trend,
- 9:03- but the area that we are really paying
- 9:05- attention to is development, the pipeline trend.
- 9:09- How do we ensure that our new grads
- 9:10- coming in, for our nurses have a great
- 9:13- experience, that they are supported by preceptors?
- 9:16- And we're also thinking differently of looking upstream
- 9:19- to partnering with local high schools and
- 9:22- middle schools. We have a program called a
- 9:24- Nova Dream Big, and we invite those teenagers
- 9:27- into our hospitals and they are standing next
- 9:29- to
- 9:30- world renowned
- 9:31- neurosurgeons,
- 9:33- learning how to put screws in a spine,
- 9:35- and they're learning how to take blood pressures,
- 9:36- and they're doing like a dissection
- 9:38- lab.
- 9:39- The ability for us to
- 9:43- spark curiosity,
- 9:44- create excitement in our youth is what we're
- 9:47- really focusing on. Because once they see what's
- 9:49- possible in healthcare, not just the typical roles,
- 9:52- but the gamut of roles,
- 9:54- then they can really say they can see
- 9:55- themselves in health care. And when we can
- 9:57- spark that, we can also be a part
- 9:58- of the solution.
- 10:00- Now I
- 10:02- confess
- 10:03- that I've looked at your bio, at least
- 10:05- on LinkedIn and so forth. And so here
- 10:08- is my confession.
- 10:09- Aside from being brilliant and a University of
- 10:12- Virginia graduate and and a fantastic background,
- 10:16- you also, at one point, were the member
- 10:18- of a choir.
- 10:20- Do you still do you still sing,
- 10:22- or is that or is that a part
- 10:24- of you that is still being nurtured, or
- 10:26- are we are we still singing it all,
- 10:28- Roberta? And I will not ask you to
- 10:30- sing on tape here today, but I will
- 10:32- ask if you still do sing.
- 10:34- Yes. I do. I do sing, you know,
- 10:37- singing with family, singing with my sister. My
- 10:39- sister is my duet partner, honestly. And so,
- 10:42- that is, like, the most fun thing that
- 10:44- I do.
- 10:46- That is magnificent.
- 10:47- And I will ask, is there a favorite
- 10:49- song that the two of you sing? And
- 10:51- how nice is that that your sister's your
- 10:53- duet partner? How beautiful is that? Are there
- 10:55- other sisters, and do they feel left out
- 10:57- of that, though?
- 10:58- No. I think the two of us pretty
- 11:00- much got the singing singing genes. We do
- 11:02- it with my parents,
- 11:03- watching I think we've been doing it since
- 11:05- we were like 10. Our favorite song is
- 11:07- Amazing Grace.
- 11:09- I am soprano and she is alto. So
- 11:11- it's really perfect for us to harmonize.
- 11:14- And then, of course, there's the Carys Oki
- 11:15- songs that we all love to sing. But
- 11:18- my my go to with my sister is
- 11:20- Amazing Grace.
- 11:21- That is amazing. So that makes my day.
- 11:23- I have to tell you. I love that.
- 11:25- And talk about you also went back and
- 11:27- did a master's degree in health administration,
- 11:30- a commitment to lifelong learning. How important is
- 11:33- that as a leader, and how much do
- 11:34- you encourage that commitment to lifelong learning?
- 11:37- Oh my goodness.
- 11:39- You can never stop. You you can absolutely
- 11:41- never stop. And
- 11:43- even as recently as 2024,
- 11:46- I actually went back to UVA, so I'm
- 11:48- a double Wahoo,
- 11:49- and I did their executive leadership program with
- 11:52- the Darden School. So that was a year
- 11:54- long curriculum.
- 11:56- And I'm learning from other industries, and it's
- 11:58- super exciting. I can learn from from retail,
- 12:00- from real estate, from from tech. I'm like,
- 12:03- how do you do that? How do you
- 12:04- think about who your your primary consumer is?
- 12:07- And we've learned so many things.
- 12:09- And I'm actually just reached out to the,
- 12:12- Health Management Academy to say,
- 12:14- continue to help me understand
- 12:16- this evolution and integration of AI into health
- 12:20- care operations.
- 12:21- And not just from a technological,
- 12:24- like, here are the words, but how can
- 12:26- it really transform what we're delivering here in
- 12:28- health care
- 12:29- and spread across the the industry? So I'm
- 12:32- actually reaching out to people now looking at
- 12:34- conferences where I can continue to learn outside
- 12:37- of my my core experience over the last
- 12:39- few years.
- 12:40- I I I love that concept, quite frankly,
- 12:43- of cross learning, learning other areas and how
- 12:45- they discipline what you do and how they
- 12:46- lead to better thinking and so forth. It's
- 12:48- just fantastic.
- 12:49- Roberta, what a remarkable
- 12:51- career and what a remarkable health system.
- 12:54- I I wanna thank you so much for
- 12:56- joining us today on the Becker's Healthcare podcast.
- 12:58- Truly fantastic.
- 13:00- I I wish I had the wherewithal to
- 13:02- ask you to sing, but I will not
- 13:04- do it. I promise.
- 13:06- But thank you so much for joining us.
- 13:07- It's an amazing career, and thank you so
- 13:09- much for your leadership. Thank you for having
- 13:11- me, and we'll talk soon.
- 13:13- Looking forward. Thank you so much.
