  Speaker 6: Hebrew Bible. I actually found something just today that beautifully

  Speaker 6: expresses some of it. It's a speech by Marco Rubio

  Speaker 6: that he gave about a month ago in Jerusalem. And

  Speaker 6: here's part of it I'm going to quote from. He says,

  Speaker 6: it was here in Jerusalem, that the lessons that formed
• 26:03
  Speaker 6: the base rock and the foundations of our laws, of
• 26:07
  Speaker 6: the principles upon which we decide what is right and
• 26:10
  Speaker 6: what is wrong, were built upon. If you think about

  Speaker 6: the things that today we in civilized societies use as

  Speaker 6: rules to govern us, these things did not come because

  Speaker 6: good people wrote them. They came because they were rooted

  Speaker 6: in ancient teaching. And this connection to the Hebrew Bible

  Speaker 6: of America goes all the way back to our beginnings,
• 26:36
  Speaker 6: even before the United States. But the Puritans that came
• 26:43
  Speaker 6: over in the 17th century, they saw their story. They
• 26:47
  Speaker 6: saw what they were doing as a replication of the
• 26:52
  Speaker 6: Jews' passage from Egypt, out of slavery in Egypt, to
• 26:57
  Speaker 6: the Promised Land. And So there's this image of the
• 27:00
  Speaker 6: exodus you find running through American life again and again
• 27:05
  Speaker 6: and again.
• 27:06
  Speaker 5: And it's nothing if not Jewish.
• 27:10
  Speaker 6: This is a quintessential, I mean, in a way, the
• 27:14
  Speaker 6: exodus is the quintessential.
• 27:16
  Speaker 5: Definition of the Jewish identity.

  Speaker 6: It's the reason that every Jewish family celebrates the Passover,
• 27:26
  Speaker 6: the Seder meal, that he tells the story.

  Speaker 5: And it's really a way of affirming.

  Speaker 6: Their identity, who they are, and how they face who
• 27:38
  Speaker 6: they are back.
• 27:40
  Speaker 3: I know that the Founding Fathers all had a real
• 27:44
  Speaker 3: connection with Israel. And I know Israel obviously didn't exist

  Speaker 3: back then, but they love the idea of a Jewish
• 27:51
  Speaker 3: state and the Jewish people having their homeland.
• 27:54
  Speaker 2: And they talked about it all the time.
• 27:55
  Speaker 3: And I think they saw it as kind of what
• 27:57
  Speaker 3: we were doing in 1776, building our own homeland.

  Speaker 2: They kind of saw a connection.
• 28:02
  Speaker 5: Between the two, right?
• 28:04
  Speaker 2: Absolutely.
• 28:05
  Speaker 5: I mean, look, John Adams, I mean, I could quote
• 28:07
  Speaker 5: a dozen people.
• 28:08
  Speaker 6: John Adams said that the Hebrews have done more to
• 28:12
  Speaker 6: civilize men than any other nation.

  Speaker 5: Um, That's pretty strong stuff.

  Speaker 6: So, yeah, there is a way in which the Hebrew,
• 28:23
  Speaker 6: the Bible, the Jewish people, that story has always been
• 28:28
  Speaker 6: parallel to the way that we have seen ourselves. And
• 28:32
  Speaker 6: Lincoln calling us an almost chosen people, a covenant in
• 28:38
  Speaker 6: a similar way.
• 28:40
  Speaker 5: So it's always.
• 28:41
  Speaker 6: Been sort of part of our national identity.
• 28:45
  Speaker 5: See ourselves as biblical.
• 28:48
  Speaker 3: And Bill, very few people know this, but the United

  Speaker 3: States of America probably wouldn't exist if it wasn't for

  Speaker 3: a Jew who raised the money and gave the money

  Speaker 3: to keep the war effort going during the American Revolution.

  Speaker 2: We were completely broken. And he funded the entire, I.

  Speaker 3: Think it was the equivalent of $ 10 million today. He

  Speaker 6: And for us Americans, it's the American Revolution, the Declaration

  Speaker 6: of Independence. and these things. And I'm a little concerned.

  Speaker 6: I haven't seen it yet, but this Ken Burns, uh,

  Speaker 6: you know, sort of docudrama about the American revolution. There's

  Speaker 6: a lot of chatter about how it's not, uh, not

  Speaker 6: very good. That's really served that purpose.

  Speaker 5: One of the things we want, we're about to celebrate

  Speaker 5: the 250th anniversary of.

  Speaker 6: The beginning of the American, American separation from England in
