Transcript
- 0:04This production is brought to you by the Reesa's Bell. Hello everybody, my
- 0:09name is Justin Greenberg and this is Film Real. On today's episode, we're
- 0:13gonna be talking Disney movies and I brought I brought a friend, a little
- 0:18tinker bell, if you will. My lovely co host for today is my
- 0:23good friend Gina. Gina, how's it going? Hey, it was so
- 0:26justin. Thank you for having me. I'm excited. You know, I'm
- 0:29a big movie both not as much as you, but I love movies.
- 0:32So I'm glad that we get to talk about my childhood some nostalgia yesday.
- 0:36And I mentioned right before we went on the air, you know you're allowed
- 0:39to curse on this thing. Fuck. I was gonna say if you want
- 0:44to say one, but you just you just put down all three. So
- 0:47yeah, so yeah, it's gonna be fun. We're gonna we're gonna discuss,
- 0:50you know, our personal history with Disney movies, some controversial Disney stories
- 0:55that have come across over the last you know, one hundred years or so
- 0:58that Disney has been around. But we also got a little bit of a
- 1:02bracket. I love tournaments, you know, March Madness coming up. In
- 1:06a few weeks. So why don't we do a little Disney tournament. I
- 1:10think that's where we're gonna start things here, and then we'll get into some
- 1:11more Disney discussions. So we picked eight movies with this tournament that we're sort
- 1:17of all over the place. We didn't really want to deviate too much to
- 1:21the past because I know you in particular. I don't know, I got
- 1:23this vibe that you don't like older things based on some of the conversations we've
- 1:29had with movies, You're like, oh, the graphics are terrible, So
- 1:32I don't know if you feel that way with animation. Also, can you
- 1:36go back and watch some of those older movies? No, absolutely not,
- 1:38And I am a poll. We talked about Halloween, okay, and I
- 1:42actually went back and watching them like not bad, but the like older horror
- 1:48film specifically were the ones where I'm kind of like, I'm not really into
- 1:52a good graphics, like The Shining. I think it's entirely overrated and I
- 1:56would die on that hill. Let's die on that hill. Love Love Jack
- 1:59Nicholson. Yeah, he was overrated. You have a knife in your hand
- 2:01and you're screaming, so unrealistic. But going backwards, like when it comes
- 2:07to yeah, you're probably right, I'm I have enough self awareness to be
- 2:10like, you may be right about me. When it comes to the movies.
- 2:14Now, music is a whole different topic. I go all the way
- 2:16back to the fifties with that. But movies, I grew up the early
- 2:20two thousand. You remember, I'm the Blu ray baby. I'm the CGI
- 2:23baby, you know. So I had my my movie journey started with beautiful,
- 2:30like clear cut graphics. So you're telling me to get rid of the
- 2:34one thing that I really loved about movies. I can't. I can't do
- 2:38it. I can't see the beauty and trash and garbage, like the technology
- 2:43was not where it needed to be. See you are you are completely off
- 2:46base here. We're gonna we're gonna get into our first argument right here.
- 2:49Maybe I'll add like a little bell sound, so like the fight's gonna start.
- 2:53So for me, those movies are too clean. It's too There's something
- 2:59about watch an older Disney movie like Pinocchio or Fantasia, and there's a rawness
- 3:05to it. There's a little bit of an edge to it. The lines
- 3:07maybe aren't as clean. You watch these other movies. It's just to me,
- 3:10it's too polished. And if you have something that has a little bit
- 3:14of edge to it, even if it's music or art, I think it
- 3:17adds more of character to it. So I don't like that we're just stuck
- 3:23in this clean cgi world. Now you know what I'm hearing justin I'm hearing
- 3:27that you like shit, because that's exactly That's exactly what I'm hearing. It's
- 3:30the fact that, first off, you don't like that it's polished. I
- 3:34have never in my existence, my twenty one years of living, have I
- 3:38heard someone complain about the polishedness or something being too perfect. What about this?
- 3:43All right, let's talk about women, because we both like women.
- 3:46Yes, so like to me, we can agree with that. To me,
- 3:51though, there's something more charming about a girl that has some flaws.
- 3:54Like if there's like a picture perfect ten, yes, okay, she's obviously
- 3:59tray active. But I find the more uniqueness in like an eight point one
- 4:03that maybe has like messed up eyebrows and maybe like a gap in the tooth.
- 4:09Like to me, like even with women, it doesn't have to be
- 4:12completely polished. There's something more interesting about that. So I guess I find
- 4:15that same way with movies. I support women, I know I do.
- 4:17I don't know. Maybe you just don't do not support women? You tell
- 4:21me is a fire here as a woman. You heard it here she said
- 4:25she doesn't support them. I don't. I'm not a feminist and a slightest
- 4:28as a woman. But but do you hear my argument though it makes sense?
- 4:32Right? No? Because I realized that I could pull a tin,
- 4:35so I'm cool with tins. But but I in a way, yes,
- 4:42like I think flaws are beautiful in a way because people are like imperfectly perfect.
- 4:46But I don't like my movies the way I like my women. And
- 4:50I might be lying, and you, I will say, also, everyone
- 4:54is entitled to their own opinion with movies. I might think your opinion is
- 4:58wrong. But I can't. I can't sit here and be like, no,
- 5:00you have to like this movie because I like it. If you don't
- 5:03like it, you don't like it. And I'm not gonna like something that
- 5:05you don't like. And I think that's a weird world that we live in
- 5:09now, where people are so clear cut. If it's not their way,
- 5:13they're not even willing to have a conversation with somebody, whether it's politics or
- 5:17something as stupid as a movie, like if you don't like this movie,
- 5:21I'm so angry You're gonna write a tweet and I'll never speak to you again.
- 5:25Like relax, it's just a movie. If you don't like it,
- 5:27you don't like it. I still think you're wrong, but we're able to
- 5:30have the conversation. So let's let's get into this bracket right here. So
- 5:33we selected eight movies. We tried to keep them all within the past thirty
- 5:38years or so. The oldest one on this list is actually The Little Mermaid
- 5:42from the late nineteen eighties. So let's get into the names in the bracket.
- 5:46We got Finding Nemo taking on a Laddin toy story, taking on Monsters,
- 5:49inc. The Goofy Movie taking on Up, and Little Mermaid taking on
- 5:55Lion King all in the first round. So let's start off with Finding Nemo
- 5:59and the Laddin. And to me, this one's clear cut. I'm not
- 6:02the biggest Nemo guy. And Aladdin, to me is one of those iconic
- 6:09films, especially especially the Genie played by Robin Williams. I will go on
- 6:15the record and say that character might be the greatest animated character in any Disney
- 6:20movie. He's so fun. The music is fun. They don't have music,
- 6:25you know, music goals. There's great, you know, a great
- 6:28film score in Finding Nemo, but they're not singing, so it's a different
- 6:30type of movie. The music in Aladdin, though, is stuff that I
- 6:34constantly am playing and it's just hand drawn animation versus CGI. I think the
- 6:45character of Aladdin is a little dull, but the character surrounding Aladdin is what
- 6:48makes that movie extremely interesting. And versus Finding Nemo, which I think is
- 6:54a very good movie, but it never I just wasn't captivated as I was
- 7:00with some of Pixar's previous work. Nowhere, Where would you go with this?
- 7:02Because I'm going to Laddin moving on, I am going I have to
- 7:06agree with you. I mean, out of the two Aladdin, I just
- 7:10I'm a sucker for Jasmine. That That's where I'm starting off with. But
- 7:13no woman though exactly. But the plot, like it is very different it's
- 7:17supposed to Finding Nemo. I do really enjoy your good music. I look
- 7:21at it. It's like a musical sense, because you know, the Finding
- 7:26Nemo was very more plot based. It didn't really surround have a lot of
- 7:30music or just sound effects in it. So in that way, because I'm
- 7:33such a big music fan, that's probably why I'm gonna go with Aladdin.
- 7:36I think the plot was good. I think the Genie was probably my favorite
- 7:40character. He was very relatable, very humorous, So I'm with you in
- 7:44that aspect. It's a hard choice, though, I will say for me
- 7:46because Finding Nemo once again, I grew up as a Blu ray baby.
- 7:49That was probably one of the first just movies that I remember watching it seeing.
- 7:56But it was also for as a as a kid like wanting to keep
- 7:59my It kind of lost me a little bit throughout the movie and is a
- 8:03heavy movie. You know, there's nothing really as emotional. Aladdin has some
- 8:09emotion to it. I will say, you know, when Genie finally gets
- 8:13to be free, you know, he gets his freedom, that's a little
- 8:16bit emotional. But I don't think there's anything as emotional in Aladdin as there
- 8:20is in Finding Nemo. Finding Nemo is probably a better story if you're just
- 8:24looking at it objectively, but Aladdin is more fun and I'm a sucker for
- 8:30hand drawn animation. Robin Williams, Gilbert Godfried as the parrot Iago. I
- 8:35think Ja'afar is a great villain. There's not really a villain per se in
- 8:39Finding Nemo. It's more just about the journey of finding the Sun. It's
- 8:43a great story, great voice casting in Finding Nemo. But I gotta go
- 8:46Aladdin moving on in this one. Okay, I'm with you on that one,
- 8:50but I will have I still got to give credit to Finding Nemo for
- 8:52cut. For me, it is a hard one. What I really loved
- 8:56is the story. Like you said, the plot. I think it was
- 8:58a very meaning will apply and I didn't really understand it until I watched it,
- 9:03I would say a couple of months ago as an adult, and I
- 9:05just realized, like the theme of it, I really enjoyed. It made
- 9:09me emotional. I'm twenty one years old crying at a movie I watched when
- 9:11I was like six. So it was the fact that a father was willing
- 9:16to go above and beyond to find this child. You know. The movie
- 9:18started off with tragedy, and what I liked about Disney at the time is
- 9:22that they didn't really shy away from something that was so realistic. You know.
- 9:24The other I don't know how many eggs she had, but his wife
- 9:30and all of his other children were eaten, so he's literally protecting the one
- 9:35child that he has left. And I think, you know, having just
- 9:39my background having a very like overbearing parent because I am the only child,
- 9:43I know how that feels. And I saw both sides of how you know
- 9:46this dad just wanted to protect his only child, the only one that he
- 9:50has left, the only piece of him that he has left. But at
- 9:52the same time, this child wants to let you know, like I have
- 9:54a life to live, you have to let me go, you have to
- 9:56trust me, which is also set this up on purpose, But that's also
- 10:01kind of a theme in Aladdin, because Jasmine is very much like you have
- 10:05to stay in the palace, you're not allowed, and the father's kind of
- 10:07overbearing and there is no mother to be seen, So a lot of common
- 10:11themes there. But I think we're both gonna move on with Aladdin in round
- 10:16number two, which brings us to our second first round matchup, a Goofy
- 10:20movie versus Up again, two extremely different movies. Up. I'd say the
- 10:26first fifteen minutes of Up is the most emotional I've ever been while watching a
- 10:33movie. I don't think it gets any higher than that, though. I
- 10:35think that is the peak of the movie. That being said, the rest
- 10:39of the movie is tremendous. That grumpy old man. I love the formula
- 10:45in movies where you have a grumpy type character where you know, deep down
- 10:50he has a heart of gold and you sort of peel away from those layers,
- 10:54and by the end of the movie he becomes a fatherlike figure to the
- 10:58little boys kid. The great fun characters, great cast, good CGI animation.
- 11:05As far as the Goofy movie goes down, that is a classic.
- 11:11It's my It might be my favorite. I don't know. We've got some
- 11:15of the classics in here on this tournament, but I've just that movie.
- 11:20I always think of Summer. Whenever I think of the Goofy movie, I
- 11:22think of Summer. I love the whole father's son dynamic. A lot of
- 11:26these movies have that ye that father son thing. You know, Max doesn't
- 11:31want to be with his dad Goofy. They go on this road trip together
- 11:35and they form a bond. There is hard to it. There is comedy
- 11:37to it. Up also has some great comedy in it as well. Again,
- 11:41the thing that's missing, the thing that is different between This is the
- 11:46Goofy movie is a musical. There are lyrics and songs being sung up,
- 11:52has some great music. The actual film score that plays in the background is
- 11:56really emotional, especially in those first fifteen minutes. The music is great.
- 12:00But I don't know, maybe I'm just a sucker for a musical. And
- 12:03those songs eye to Eye and the other one this is on the Open Road.
- 12:11That's a classic song as well. This wasn't the one the like the
- 12:13amazing Goofy movies when they went to college the sequel, so I grew up
- 12:18on the sequel. I had to go back to watch the first one.
- 12:20But I think those two like for the second one to be a sequel,
- 12:24and I think the sequel won up the first one the origin. Yes,
- 12:28I really did enjoy the sequel because I mean, of course Rock's hand.
- 12:31You know, I'm a sucker for the ladies in the movie, but I'm
- 12:35with you the dynamic, and I always loved Goofy as a character, and
- 12:39you you know, you give me a little craft for not like in the
- 12:41original, but the beat to be made in the nineties, and I actually
- 12:45enjoyed the graphics for it. The way this specifically the way it was shot,
- 12:48the cinematography for it. I really enjoyed that aspect of the Goofy movie.
- 12:54And I think that the original and the sequel probably a very good duo
- 12:58combo. Yeah, as opposed to a lot of like Disney sequels. So
- 13:03I actually have both movies. I would still umping them together as like yeah,
- 13:09as like one. I put them in my top five for Disney.
- 13:11I really enjoyed them. And I'm not a big I didn't really grow up
- 13:16as a like big cartoonist. It just was Disney movies. Like I didn't
- 13:18explore the like cartoon at work and the TV shows and things of that nature.
- 13:22But yeah, I see where we're going here for this one. I'm
- 13:26definitely going Goofy movie. Yeah, I'm going Gophy movie. We can agree
- 13:30on the first two. It's one of those VHS taps and we're gonna talk
- 13:33about VHS taps later on. That was just in constant rotation, you know,
- 13:37we just rewound it and you know, would watch the whole thing and
- 13:41then rewind it again and watch it from start to finish. And it's one
- 13:43of those those that soundtracks that I listened to NonStop. We're gonna move on
- 13:48to our next second round match next first round matchup, and that is Toy
- 13:52Story versus Monsters Inc. The original Toy Story, the first ever fully cg
- 13:58I movie and Gina, I know you love you know this your CGI,
- 14:03but this is the one that started at all. And when this came out
- 14:07because I saw this one in theaters, I'm an old man, as you
- 14:09know, it blew my mind and it blew everyone's mind because nobody has seen
- 14:15anything like that. But that only goes so far. Because if you have
- 14:20groundbreaking technology, yeah, okay, it's good for its time, but does
- 14:24it stand the test of time. And I think the story of Toy Story
- 14:28and the voice acting and this song is because you got Randy Newman. You
- 14:33know, you've got a friend of me, and clearly I will go sailing
- 14:37no more. There's great music, there's a great story, there's great cast,
- 14:41and there's groundbreaking special effects. Monsters z Inc. Has all those things.
- 14:46It was you did better graphically because it's a more advanced movie came out,
- 14:50you know, five or six years later. It's got great cast.
- 14:54As far as you know, John Goodman and Billy Crystal, I think they
- 14:56do a great job and there's great music, great little musical numbers in there.
- 15:01The story is heartfelt, both of them. I love the dynamic of
- 15:03Boo you know, Kitty Kitty, you know, it's just adorable. But
- 15:09there's something about that original Toy Story. It's it's the one that I owned
- 15:13on VHS. I never owned Monsters Inc. Until years later. It's one
- 15:16I have a fond memory of going to see in theaters and then buying the
- 15:20video game on the Saga Genesis, and we went to Burger King after the
- 15:24movie and they had their version of Happy Meal toys with the Toy Story toys
- 15:28there. So I just have I just have a fond memory of that time
- 15:33of my life watching this movie, and I just think it's a fantastic film.
- 15:37So I'm picking Toyster a little bit. I'm picking Toy Story on this
- 15:41one. Are you going Monsters Inc. Or Toy Story? I gotta go
- 15:45Monsters Ink. Well, hear me out, hear me, I hear here.
- 15:46Toy Story I actually liked. I think my favorite one was Toy Story
- 15:50two or three. I didn't really the original was okay. It was cool.
- 15:54I think the plot was okay, but I didn't really under I didn't
- 16:00really, It didn't like resonate with me the way it did with many people.
- 16:03I think it's a great movie. I enjoyed it, but compared to
- 16:07Monsters Inc. I mean, Monsters Inc. Was that movie for me that
- 16:10I rewinded three or four times, like I fell in love with Mike Wizouskin
- 16:15and and Boo like Kitty like you said, Kitty Kitty she is. And
- 16:22I also liked Randy. I know he was a villain, but for some
- 16:25reason, like I always felt it was more to him. So when Monsters
- 16:30University came out and I got to like my questions were answered in terms of
- 16:36that background information, his villain story makes a lot of sense. Not gonna
- 16:40lie, but Monsters Inc. Was that movie that I just during my childhood,
- 16:44I just constantly found myself going back to over and over again. So
- 16:48when I had to wait damn near a decade later to get the second one
- 16:52as a teenager at the time, I feel like when it dropped I was
- 16:56more than a static for it. But I don't think it's delivered, whereas
- 16:57I think Toy Story two Toy Story three really delivered. They did. But
- 17:03numbers are numbers. Numbers are numbers. I feel like emotionally, monsters ingrastinating
- 17:10more with me. Now you gotta go home? You want to go home?
- 17:12Or that that need of protection. Yeah, well I think I think
- 17:17they're both really funny movies. I legitimately laugh out loud. There's a scene
- 17:21where Buzz he finds out he's not a real space ranger and he's lost his
- 17:27arm and he's he's like drunk having a tea party with these other two weird
- 17:32creations that are in Sid's house, and he's like, I am missus nesbit.
- 17:37Do you see the hat? Just scenes that I constantly reference, you
- 17:41know, thirty years later, and you know me, Gina, I'm a
- 17:45giant manchild that collects action figures. So seeing these toys, you know,
- 17:49the Army Soldier or the Mister Potato, had the references to things that I
- 17:55used to play with and still play with to this day. It's just so
- 18:00so good. But I'm gonna give you, since you are the guests,
- 18:03and I don't hate monsters Inc. I'm gonna have Monsters Inc. Move on
- 18:07because this is unfortunately it's just two people, so we can't have a third
- 18:11vote. But I'm gonna I'm gonna how about to say we go rock Paper
- 18:14scissor, now gonna gonna I'll go with you. You know, Monsters inc.
- 18:18I have no beef with I just I just watched it a few weeks
- 18:21ago and it's it really is a fantastic movie. But we'll talk about what
- 18:26our favorite Disney movies are in general later on, because I'll tell you where
- 18:29I ranked Toy Story, because I really rank it high. But we got
- 18:33one more first round matchup, and that is The Little Mermaid versus The Lion
- 18:37King. Great music in both of these these these uh, both of these
- 18:41movies have tremendous music. Uh, part of your world versus you know,
- 18:45Hakuna Matada. Great side characters because Sebastian is a great side character versus you
- 18:52know, Timon and Pumba. I love Rafiki and The Lion King. I'm
- 18:57When I was growing up, Little Mermaid was seen as a girl movie.
- 19:02It just was. It really was. I didn't want to give it the
- 19:04time of day, and I might have watched it maybe once or twice when
- 19:07I was a kid. You know, my neighbor liked it. She was,
- 19:11you know, a little girl. My sister liked it, so I
- 19:12was like, I can't watch it, it's a Little Mermaid, But then
- 19:17I've watched it recently and it is really freaking fantastic, beautifully hand drawn animation
- 19:22and the movie that really started the golden Age of Disney in the nineties,
- 19:30even though it came out in the late eighties. For people that don't know,
- 19:33Disney was on top of the world pretty much until the late sixties,
- 19:37and then Walt Disney passed away in the seventies, and most of the eighties
- 19:41Disney was failing. They'd have a hit here and there, but they were
- 19:44having bomb after bomb after bomb. Some of their theme park decisions were not
- 19:48good, so Disney was really in the dumps. And then Who Framed Roger
- 19:52Rabbit came out in nineteen eighty eight, and then The Little Mermaid came out
- 19:56in nineteen eighty nine and started this new Disney red assi we got going into
- 20:00the nineties with Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin and Lion King and Pocahontas and
- 20:04all these iconic films that gross the shit ton of money. Wouldn't have really
- 20:07happened without Little Mermaid. That being said, Lion King is moving on in
- 20:14my book. I love the Lion King. I do, and I think
- 20:18that that movie, more so than I would like to admit, probably made
- 20:22me cry multiple times from front to bottom. I think when you it was
- 20:27easy to understand the bigger picture as a child, you know, because these
- 20:32are movies I grew up with. So I'm thinking I'm anywhere between six and
- 20:37eight. That were like the first time I watched these movies, and then
- 20:41of course throughout the childhood you rewatch movies tens of millions of times. Lion
- 20:45King is the movie till this day, I still go back to I had
- 20:48the original Lion King two and then the Bloopers and like extra edition DVD Lion
- 20:55King one and a half, Yeah, one and a half, Yeah with
- 20:57Timba with Poomba on the on the cover for that one, I remember I
- 21:03had. I had that movie on DVD and DHS. I believe this movie
- 21:07was so big, Gina, you know they they re released it a few
- 21:11times. Uh it was the highest grossing animated movie for quite some time.
- 21:15And uh it was a juggernaut. Like when Hakuna Matata, everyone was singing
- 21:19it. In fact, even in in Toy Story, there's a scene where
- 21:23the little girl Andy's sister is actually listening to Hakuna Matata in the car like
- 21:29so it was gigantic, beautifully animated. The only thing that kind of pisses
- 21:34me off. There There are two things. One, the idea of was
- 21:38stolen. There was a book that this was heavily influenced by that. They
- 21:42pretty much stole be for me and Disney has been doing that for years,
- 21:47but they didn't give any credit, which is what I don't like. And
- 21:49then the main character. I I really think that Ariel is a far more
- 21:56interesting character than Simba. You're crazy. She is is bland. The same
- 22:00thing with the Latin. I think they're bland characters. They're generic. It's
- 22:04the character surrounded. I think Voss is good. I think I think Timon
- 22:07and Pumba. I think Scar is a great villain. He might be the
- 22:11best Disney villain. But Ursula is a pretty badass villain as well. But
- 22:15I think the character of Ariel is very unique. You know, she's just
- 22:18dumbfounded. Uh you know, what is this thing? A thing? I'm
- 22:22a bob Like, she's clueless, she's romantic, she wants to escape or
- 22:26you know, Simba's kind of like all right, you know that woman gave
- 22:30up her voice for a man. Exact, Stand up, sweetheart, stand
- 22:34up? No you're not a fan of that? No, no, what
- 22:38any movie. That's why I'm not a big I was. I was a
- 22:42little girl that shied away from the Prince's movies like Snow Wide, Beauty and
- 22:48the Beast like we was because it was conditioning girls to feel like they like
- 22:53having a man like save them was a necessity or like mandatory. I'm like,
- 22:59why can't they be dependent? This is why I like movies like Aladdin,
- 23:03like yes, because their dynamic was different, Like, but yeah,
- 23:07I think there is. I think we've gotten completely away from that though.
- 23:12And I think there is a group of women. I'm not saying you,
- 23:15but I think there are women out there. In fact, I know there
- 23:18are that do they want to be rescued. And I think that Hollywood has
- 23:23completely gone away from that. Yeah. Like, there was a movie The
- 23:27Mummy back in the late nineties with Brendan Fraser, one of my favorite movies,
- 23:32and it's very much like women need to be rescued masculine man. But
- 23:37I loved her because she was the brain. She was the muscle, but
- 23:40she was the brain yet But I think movies like that aren't made anymore.
- 23:44Not maybe it's like a little political correctness. Maybe they don't want to go
- 23:47backwards. But I think there are people that like those movies. But I
- 23:51understand where you're coming from. But maybe you know, she's basically selling her
- 23:53soul just to meet some dude. But she was horny, she was under
- 23:57the cr whole life. And then she sees the dude. He's a good
- 24:00looking guy. He might be one of the better looking Disney characters. And
- 24:03we will get to that, but we're both having Lion King move on in
- 24:06the story. Absolutely, what I grew that movie was like culture for me
- 24:12in terms of my childhood. That movie just the opening, like nah,
- 24:15it's a man, Like, oh my god. I remember when I because
- 24:18we had Aladdin on VHS, you know, we bought it. I got
- 24:22it for my birthday one year. Nice and before Aladdin, you know,
- 24:26they had the coming attractions and they had a little sneak preview of the Lion
- 24:30King. You remember when they would always put like the commercials in their movies
- 24:34of like hey this is coming out. Yeah yeah, So I was finking
- 24:37about like all adults go to head, uh huh, and that was how
- 24:41people. There was no internet really, so we were like, oh my
- 24:42god. I talked about that in one of the early episodes. I was
- 24:45like, oh my god, they're making Immortal Kombat movie because we rented Dumb
- 24:48and Dumber and we saw that they were making that movie. And I remember
- 24:51finding out about The Lion King. This is gonna be great. And the
- 24:53interesting thing about this is they didn't think The Lion King was going to be
- 24:57that successful because they were making Pocahontas and The Lion King at the same time.
- 25:03And Disney was like, Pocahontas is gonna be the really successful movie,
- 25:07and it was successful, but it wasn't Lion King successful. So they looked
- 25:11at that movie they hated. I never really got into it, but they
- 25:15put all their bread and basket, you know, all their money into Pocahontas.
- 25:18They were like, that's the A movie. So all the b animators,
- 25:22the people that aren't as big shot as the Pocahontas animators are gonna work
- 25:26on The Lion King. But then Lion King became that juggernaut and one of
- 25:30those greatest great films of all time. And it moves on to the final
- 25:33four, which leaves us with two matchups Aladdin versus Monsters Inc. And the
- 25:37Goofy movie versus The Lion King. And that one's very difficult. But let's
- 25:42start with Aladdin and Monsters Inc. I just watched Monsters Inc. As I
- 25:47mentioned, but they're like a decade apart. I think Aladdin came out ninety
- 25:52two. Monsters Inc. I believe was two thousand and one. So I
- 25:53just had so much more time with Aladdin. It's like I have the I
- 26:00have a little firmness of the Laddin, Like it's just been a part of
- 26:03my world more so than Monsters Inc. But looking at it as like a
- 26:08film critic and just taking the nostalgia glasses off, Monsters Ink is probably a
- 26:15better movie. Yeah, I'm looking at it, and I'm thinking from our
- 26:18perspective. You know when when I when I think of movies, I kind
- 26:22of overlook I literally had to take a film appreciation class for this, but
- 26:26I kind of tend to overlook everything that people love about movies, like the
- 26:30cinematography, of the plot, the theme. When I when it comes down
- 26:33to these two was like, Okay, I'm just thinking about emotions, how
- 26:37the movie makes me feel is this something If I had to pick one for
- 26:41the rest of my life and I couldn't touch the other one, which one
- 26:44would I be okay with giving up? And I can't give what Monsters inc.
- 26:48I can say, I can't give up a Laddin. What It's just
- 26:52because the best of a Laddin is better than the best of Monsters Inc.
- 26:56I will put like I said, I'll put Robin Williams Genie. I wouldn't
- 27:00never want to lose that character, and I would not want and I would
- 27:03be fine. I would be upset because I really like Monsters, Inc.
- 27:07But the cultural impact in my household of Robin Williams and the Genie is so
- 27:14impactful that I would hate to lose that character. So if I'm thinking of
- 27:18all the characters and Monsters inc. And now did you say that, I
- 27:21don't think i'd be able to give up Genie. Yeah. And because it's
- 27:23a musical, I'm a big I'm a big I'm a sucker for good music.
- 27:29So I'll give you this one. Aladdin's moving on to the finals.
- 27:33You ain't never had a friend like me, So Aladdin is taking on either
- 27:37the Goofy movie or the Lion King. Oh this is he is. I'm
- 27:41sorry, it's easy to me. This is very difficult. I have more
- 27:48fun with the Goofy movie. I can relate more to the Goofy movie because
- 27:52it's said in a modern setting. I can also relate to a single parent
- 27:56household. You know, my father passed away, so even like the father's
- 28:00son dynamic is interesting both of these because you know, Cymba loses his father.
- 28:04I lost my father. But then Goofy's a single parent, so my
- 28:07mom's a single parent trying to, you know, form a relationship with their
- 28:11kid, so there is that dynamic. Goofy movie is more fun. The
- 28:17dance numbers, the character of power Line, who's sort of like a Michael
- 28:21Jackson Prince character. I love the romance, the love of Roxanne, the
- 28:25obsession of that character. I think when you're a teenager, you fall in
- 28:29love with, you know, your dream girl or guy, and then you
- 28:32fantasize about them, and everyone could relate to that. Lion King, though
- 28:37is super iconic. It's obviously a lot more well known. I wouldn't have
- 28:41a problem with Lion King moving on. But I really love the Goofy movie.
- 28:45That's my go to and the only reason I'm saying whoa not the only
- 28:49reason I'm saying the Lion King. The Lion King was it for me,
- 28:52like that was my childhood. That was the center point of my childhood.
- 28:56And I think the themes of the movie is what speaks to me the most.
- 28:59Like you said, when Mufasa dying, Simba lost his father, but
- 29:03it was like the form of identity. You know, he was banned from
- 29:06the Pride, but it was also him growing up kind of not knowing who
- 29:10he is and not not really understanding it or knowing how to step into his
- 29:15role as king of the jungle as you know, the heir to the throne.
- 29:19And you know who's great in that movie, Rafiki, who's the the
- 29:22the ape character exactly. And he, you know, senses that there's the
- 29:27one scene where he senses that Simba's alive. He's like, he's alive in
- 29:33the and the music hits the music the score like the actual Hans Zimmer does
- 29:38the film score. Uh, that stuff is really really good. And then
- 29:42on top of that, you know, you have I'm going on be the
- 29:45main event and the king was before and then Kuna Matata or what's the romantic
- 29:52song that they sing can You Feel the Love to? Yeah, that's a
- 30:00great song. And that scene I was like, when she has the eyes,
- 30:03she gives these this look. I'm like, dude, I like cats
- 30:07Now and head the Eyes talk about great pussy, no pun intended. So
- 30:19the only thing I don't like, Like I said, I think Simba is
- 30:25a bland character. I think Max is a more interesting character. I think
- 30:29Goofy is a more interesting character than Simba. The characters surrounding them, yeah,
- 30:33both great. Lion King though, I think has the villain Scar Scars,
- 30:38I think the tipping point because he he is tremendous be pre Jeremy Irons
- 30:47is a tremendous voice. Uh so. But Timon and Poombo, they're like,
- 30:51they're great as well. Exactly. I'm taking them over everyone. And
- 30:55the only reason I'm picking Lion King over Goofy movie is because I prefer the
- 30:57second one over the first. Oh please, we're not talking about those.
- 31:02But you know, it's funny. I've seen a meme of is like,
- 31:03hey, your dad just died Hakuna Matata and it's like like, uh,
- 31:10you know, kind of moving on pretty quickly. But great movie. I
- 31:14have no issue with that. Moving on, which leads us to our final
- 31:18Aladdin versus Lion King, and I love this matchup, these two movies coming
- 31:22out pretty much one after the other early nineties classics. I'm good. Where
- 31:30you leaning towards this? You already nowhere? Man, I'm not giving it.
- 31:33I'm ten toos down. I'm standing for a Lion King. Do I
- 31:37need to further further? Just just give input on why over Aladdin? It's
- 31:45Lion King? Okay, we're talking. We're talking about sound scores, right,
- 31:48don't get me wrong. Yes, like you ain't never had for like
- 31:55me, I get it, I get it. But the soundtrack for Lion
- 31:57King, Oh, come on, Prince Bubble, not over the Lion King
- 32:05soundtrack, Come on, O Kunamatada is wiping at least two of those songs
- 32:08out by itself and the opening as nah. They're both animated grade. They
- 32:15are both animated grade. I still will die on this throne that the genie
- 32:21is better than anything in Lion King. No timon and Poomba. That's ridiculous,
- 32:28that's ridiculous. They were adorable over Robin Williams performance in Aladdin. May
- 32:34you were wrong on this? May rest in peace. I love Robin Williams.
- 32:37I do, okay, but I prefer missus doubt fire, not this
- 32:40okay. Aladdin was good the Genie. I'll give you that great phenomenal character.
- 32:46But I'm not taking the Genie over Timon and Poomba. I can't do
- 32:50it, please, I can't do it that two for one. I'm willing
- 32:52to die on that hill, justin. I will die on the Genie hill,
- 32:55but I will go with Lion King. I have no issue with saying
- 33:00Lion King is the greatest Disney movie of all time, and it's gonna be
- 33:04celebrating its thirtieth anniversary nineteen ninety four, So shout out to the Lion King.
- 33:08Whooo all right, that was pretty fun, right. I was like
- 33:13I had a feeling Lion King it was gonna win this. It's just like
- 33:15it's got this epic aura to it, like it's it's it's like royalty like
- 33:21it's exactly like it's just they have theme park attraction dedicated to it. It
- 33:24stood the test of time. We have the live action remake or whatever you
- 33:29want to call it, because it's not live action, it's all computer generated,
- 33:32which brings us to our next discussion. All right, that's gonna end
- 33:37Part one of this Disney conversation I've had with Gina. We're gonna stop right
- 33:40there. This is me coming in post recording, and we're gonna break this
- 33:45up into two segments because we got a lot to talk about in part two.
- 33:50So tune in next week for more Disney talk right here on Film Reel
