- 0:01Here's your host, Alex Starrett, and welcome inside to another edition of Adapting
- 0:07with Alex Garrett and the one that got podcast And thanks to pod match for
- 0:11making this connection. This is so cool. I've got win Charles Allen,
- 0:15and I love about when she is a triathlete, that's right, a triathlete,
- 0:19she's an author and she doesn't let trebel palsy stop her. And I'm
- 0:24sure she'll tell us how she's adapted to cerebral palsy to becoming a triathlete and
- 0:28so much more when thanks for joining me. I love it. Adapted to
- 0:34salele halsy. Well tell me that next week, next Tuesday, when I'm
- 0:40having Doc Surdery read doubted by all one more time and say adapted to stayable
- 0:46holdly. Yes, I'm having doing next week, but that's to be said
- 0:50point right now. And so I have adapted to say able Halsy. I'm
- 0:59using Alex would here people because I love it. I have adapted it to
- 1:03stay up with palsy because I grew up not knowing I had it. Yes,
- 1:10DP is a knowledge condition at PAS. Yes, I acquired it in
- 1:15eighty seven. Yes, it's impact in my life. The whole life long
- 1:23now, when I said you required you were not born with it, then
- 1:26when I was born with it, the ac client term as I acquired in
- 1:33eighty seven. I don't know how I acquired it, but I was born
- 1:38with it. So do you feel like despite having acquired it and being born
- 1:44with at the same time, I guess right, do you feel like you've
- 1:47had to adapt along the way and that's why you wrote your book. I've
- 1:52had to adapt along the way. I vote my book because I lost my
- 1:57mom and then I lost my dad and fortunately in two thousand and nineteen,
- 2:02lost my mom in two thousand and ten, and lost my dad in two
- 2:08thy nineteen, and in the my mom, and then I did the Collie
- 2:15Man and then lost my dad. So I did the cone Iron Man.
- 2:22It we did it when? And I say wait, because I had a
- 2:25teammate do it with me, and we did. She passed away in August.
- 2:34We must have did it in November two thousand ten, November October November
- 2:44that and my teammates at the time said, oh, when I have a
- 2:53surprise for you, And my teammate happened to be my family member. Okay,
- 3:01Oh, I have a spice to you. And I'm the type that
- 3:05says, oh, just cut to the case, don't don't you have a
- 3:08slight right after my mom dies? If you knew my mom died, do
- 3:15we say, oh, we all were there watching my mom die, So
- 3:20you knew my mom and died. So I'm like, if this is a
- 3:23spies about my mom dying, it's not a surprise. But if this is
- 3:30a surpise about something else, tell me. And so I'm like, oh,
- 3:35oh, whatever cuts in the case. He goes, well, do
- 3:38you want to do? I am man? And at this point I'm listening
- 3:46at my desk and on the phone with her, and I'm thinking, how
- 3:53the heck am I supposed to do? Iron Iron Man? Let alone?
- 3:59Call know? Let alone a triathlon? And I am like, Kay,
- 4:06does my dad know about this? What have I gotten myself into? Well?
- 4:14Tell us out. I trained like man and woman, like anyone else
- 4:18would do. Talk about the training if it differs for them someone with CP
- 4:25or is it now it's the same training, training measurement, and it's adapted,
- 4:33but it's the same training. And the advantage I had is I love
- 4:41it in Colonade all that the time, and you will say, a bunch
- 4:46of triathletes come up to vote in Colonado to train in El Sude. Mind
- 4:55you in Elstitude. A lot of biathletes, coaches and and distance running coaches
- 5:02send their trias, send their clients to Colorado, especially their triathletes, because
- 5:11they want I altadud training. So I do the advantage of ilsa sude training
- 5:18do and hence where I lived. So I was talking on that, but
- 5:27go ahead? Was in the desert? Or where did you do your triathle
- 5:30on it? I did it in the Colina Hawaii. I didn't. I
- 5:36did one in Colina, Hawahite. I did one in Atlanta, one in
- 5:44Boulder. I did one in Atlanta, one in Atlanta, one in Boulder.
- 5:53The main one was in ConA, and then I did another one in
- 6:02Boulder, Toler, Oh, Florida, Son, Florida, So Florida,
- 6:12Boulder, at Atlanta and then Antona. Because you have to build yourself up
- 6:19to Tona. Anyone does anyone does? You can just say, oh,
- 6:25one day I'm on the couch. Oh one day I'm gonna want a masicine.
- 6:29I know one day I'm gonna do a triathlin. You have to building
- 6:32yourself up. So Tola recommended the people at iron Man recommended that we do
- 6:41a year, which we did, and then the iron Man got so they
- 6:46are so picky about these athletes coming in with disabilities, even though they love
- 6:58them, even though the iron Man and loves them from ion Golf. But
- 7:04the iron Man is picky about how much special equipment you can bring in.
- 7:13So they put me in a boat. Do the swim with me. This
- 7:18one at COONa is absolutely beautiful. And then wonder over there, Yeah,
- 7:29ocean, it's open the water swim and so we did the swim. We
- 7:36did. We did not do the bike because I'm just sorry. We were
- 7:45in the middle of a bike but we got cut off due to my teammate
- 7:50was pulling me and titling a bike and complaining this is hard by in the
- 8:00middle of the Colna IRONMN and my aid and I my aid and I still
- 8:07can't figure out how in the wall to run to one her age class,
- 8:13mind you, the year before, because the only way that she was getting
- 8:18back to ConA was going through the Iron Man Foundation at the time. And
- 8:26fortunately, as I believe we called this the Iron Man, the Foundation doesn't
- 8:30exist, and so the iron Man. We went through the Iron Man and
- 8:39foundation had to do a the deal of why we wanted to compete in ConA
- 8:43and get a million of votes online? Which we wanted anything? And so
- 8:50yeah, well, of all of the triathlons you did and all the different
- 8:56levels, there's obviously three stages. So which stage would you say you felt
- 9:03most rewarded in every stage? Or was there a certain stage like you thought
- 9:07you couldn't do but you did it? I thought, I thought at one
- 9:15point. Now I haven't done a run at COONa, and unfortunately, when
- 9:22I do do the Iron Man full distance, it will be in plants,
- 9:28and fortunately I get to go run plants, which is ultil I decided it.
- 9:35Yeah, but I wanted to do that on ConA, but unfortunately,
- 9:39due too, I'm a woman, and due too I'm a special needs woman,
- 9:46and they might send me to ConA just because I'm special needs. But
- 9:52typically the women do it, the women who I go to body and do
- 9:56it in plants, So I don't can't they send me? Uh, typically
- 10:03they would probably do me. Not oh, they would probably do me in
- 10:11plants. I mean I might the best need to do anyway, So I
- 10:13don't care but I haven't done amount Antona. I want to do them a
- 10:20run at Kona and thought we're working on that, and unfortunately I'm having backs
- 10:28doing next Tuesdays, so that puts a little damper on my train. Am
- 10:35I get in line in the audience a little bit? You know? I
- 10:37know, do with CP have certain spasms and whatnot? And did you have
- 10:41to control some of that going into these triathlons or did you let yourself be
- 10:46you? And and if the spasm that's just like I have a thousand months
- 10:50of spasms a day. People don't see them, and people don't see them
- 11:01except they do see the big ones. And I I take now, I
- 11:07take this is my seedlings, and I'm letting a public play. So here
- 11:13we go. I take manganeseo for a two pervestis fathoms but their days.
- 11:22I take a M and it's like c B will be CEP. So I
- 11:28am not on mass of relaxes. I wasn't doing the Iron Man at any
- 11:35stretch of the imagination. So because massive relaxes and myself that get long.
- 11:43But I'm kind of ban on them or something like that, right, I
- 11:46don't know exactly, but for the Iron the Man. Yeah, they if
- 11:54I was able to body they would test be Yeah, absolutely for the Iron
- 12:03Man. If I was able to embodied, they wouldn't test me. They
- 12:07don't want drugs, They don't want dugs in your system. Yeah, now
- 12:13that I'm thinking about it, you know absolutely. But I wasn't on the
- 12:16back clibin anyway. And I wouldn't be on backleben just because it was the
- 12:22I Man. They wouldn't probably make me do a he tests. They now
- 12:28let you write because they don't want drug and the hintsmins and I'm iron Man.
- 12:33They want your body to be cleared. So so I wasn't on back
- 12:41limen. I've been off with backlbin since two thousand and nine. And so
- 12:50tell people how you tell people how you get around? Are you in a
- 12:52power chair? Walker? Crunches you? How do you get around? I
- 12:56am? I use a walker and apowerchaan very cool, very cool? You
- 13:01know reason for Arizona. You know I know that a friend of mine,
- 13:07Brianna Russa. Don't you're familiar with her, but she's done wheelchair basketball in
- 13:11Arizona at U of A. I mean it is a growing sport college.
- 13:16Uh, wheelchair basketball. I don't have you got any involvement with that when
- 13:20you were a little younger in the college days or whatnot or now. I
- 13:24am not a tool as Nato. I didn't grow up and I grew up
- 13:31in Colado. I moved to it because I had to because I lost my
- 13:35dad and I sold his house and so I had to And yeah, but
- 13:43I am not true as an a native. So college college was strangles and
- 13:52that's all I'm stillings of why. And but I want to get involved wall
- 14:01with a spot that is not going to have been quite a while now because
- 14:09I'm having back. So as I said, by the way, your book
- 14:13is called I Win, I Win. It's an amazing story of how you
- 14:18remember your life through the years having this condition called CP. And of course
- 14:24this hits home for me because I grew up around kids a sort of a
- 14:28palsy. So I understand where you're coming from. But I love bringing on
- 14:31people who who are talking about it because I feel like we got to educate
- 14:35more people, right when we got to educate more people. Oh yeah,
- 14:39so let me ask you this, did you have to care for your mom
- 14:43or dad? And I asked this because as someone who has one leg and
- 14:48you know it has this ability. I find that they don't teach you growing
- 14:52up how to care for your parents the way they care for you. So
- 14:56that's just a challenge. So did you find caring for your parents? I
- 15:03didn't have to have so much for my mom, So now that I say
- 15:11that, I wish I did. But I had to cancel my dad.
- 15:15I can for my dad for nine days because nine days absolute absolute shi t
- 15:26show. Basically he couldn't move because he had stage fall on cancer, was
- 15:33barely pleasing on oxygen. My local hospital sent him home for nine days,
- 15:41which they shouldn't have done, and he refused to go back into the hospital.
- 15:50We finally as a family, decided to keep him back into the hospital.
- 15:56He wanted a part of all oxygen, tank and polleyball and continent,
- 16:03but and all the hospital. Sony miles Away said this is the way too
- 16:11out of Oscoe. He need to go to a big hospital. Then I
- 16:17did not realize you could do this, but apparently you can't refuse being fight
- 16:23to life out. He refused being fight to life out. I thought when
- 16:30a patient was critical, I thought it was not up to the patient,
- 16:37But apparently it is, and so I took care of his way. He
- 16:41wanted everything, he did everything his way. Let me tell you where you
- 16:45come from with that. He's he was yet had the mind right up to
- 16:49the end. My dad did. So it sounds like that was the same
- 16:52fer you. You know, when I gotta I gotta ask you this because
- 16:56as we're talking some some talking to people disabilities, I feel like I'm talking
- 17:02inside baseball because you and I know things about the community that the outsider may
- 17:06not know. And that's one thing about you know. In this community we
- 17:10bust each other's chops a lot. So have you found camaraderie or connection or
- 17:15friendship with others who are disabled or has it been bringing your personality into the
- 17:21world of Phoenix. Are you finding it easy? Oh? I am finding
- 17:26easy. But I may be disabled, but I'm show up as attack.
- 17:33I have a brain. I'm less mentally disabled than I am bysically disabled.
- 17:40So I get on a bust and business. The morning, I go to
- 17:45the appointments to buy myself. I manage that. I manage. I have
- 17:52help, but that helps pretty much stays behind the scenes, and I have
- 17:56aids that come in in the morning, come in in the afternoon. And
- 18:02I live in my own condo. That's the failians Sincellia itself. I live
- 18:08in a condo complex that was designed specifically with people with the mental disabilities and
- 18:17physical disabilities. It's feed accessible. That's my next question. Is accessible for
- 18:25you? Phoenix is very successible? Yes? And no. I say no
- 18:34because people don't watch where they're going. The driving is insane, and I
- 18:42thought Colorado wasn't. I thought Colorado was bad. I know New York Man
- 18:48happens aful but and but people don't watch where they're going, so I have
- 18:57to be really careful with crossing the street. And I am the one that
- 19:02had all the way. But basically Phoenix is a lot more handicapped successful than
- 19:10Colorado was. Well, I was in Colorado, Yeah, not so much.
- 19:17Well, tell us about any crazy stories from between between both states that
- 19:22you want to tell me on this podcast. Oh I need waysic guys.
- 19:26Well, I and this was I would stay too. I have a light
- 19:33wheelchair that's meant for traveling. And I was out of state. I was
- 19:40actually back east and I was visiting. I always travel with I AID,
- 19:48so I always travel with I AID, and so I was visiting a friend
- 19:52of mine. This friend knows me really really well, and she we will
- 20:02and I have not done this ever since. And that's what I haven't.
- 20:07It's a line. Now, I put a really heavy bag on the back
- 20:14of my light wheelchair and didn't even sing anything of it. Well, I'm
- 20:21going I laugh, it's funny now, but it was not funny. It's
- 20:26time I left. I didn't even sing anything of it. And for those
- 20:33who know me, for those who know me in the podcast land, for
- 20:38those who know me personally, they know that I'm my outgoing prison. They
- 20:44know that I when I get pushed, I get pushed. And they know
- 20:48that Wind loves to travel, so funny my happy dag go on in the
- 20:53back of a wheelchair. Wind doesn't even think about it. The next the
- 21:02I'm going up, which I didn't even know about it, And the next
- 21:07thing I know, my wind catch into my head and I literally fall backwards
- 21:18and the jail falls backwards, and I'm like, oh my god, Colin
- 21:23Baising, So they rescue me, they rest jail. But I will never
- 21:32And this bag is lighter than my heavy pots on the back. But I
- 21:37will never put a heavy bag on the back of this chair. Chair again,
- 21:41because I realized that this chair could flip over with me in it.
- 21:48And I've had chairs flip elbow with me in it in the past. I've
- 21:53gone forward, I've gone backwards. I've gone I haven't gone sideways, but
- 22:03I've gone bullwards and backwards. All right, Well, let me ask you
- 22:07about traveling then, because obviously you travel a lot. You went to Hawaii
- 22:10for damn sake. You know you you travel. So what's that like?
- 22:15Do you find the airlines are accommodating not accommoding? What is your they are?
- 22:21They are? You just have to I so I only got this chair
- 22:27last December, but I have always traveled with Wilman nude man no chia.
- 22:33So a Mano chair is a little bit easier to travel with. But this
- 22:41chair is meant this is a Powell chair, and it's meant for traveling.
- 22:45Walk. Uh, palachair brings a lot more to Menians to me and I
- 22:52have the use of my likes. I can get upstairs, I can walk
- 22:57a little bit with the walker. I can walk. I'm not that's the
- 23:03same old I can yeah, I mean not that the sable way. I
- 23:07can walk and beat to reach by walk into get up a find of sands,
- 23:12and walking just has to be placed at the top of the sands.
- 23:17So I'm not that sable. But what I've learned is how to use I
- 23:22don't care and the requested I don't care, so that no one has to
- 23:29hold on to me, walk backwards and get I just let the cute guys
- 23:36do all the work. And yes, I'm gay, but I just let
- 23:40the night in the shining almost and the cute guys doing the Look how's romance
- 23:45been now that we're getting in that department, how's romance work for you?
- 23:49I haven't just go and yet in fans that is something I want to do.
- 23:56And I have ax boyfriend. I'm allowed to say that, and I
- 24:03have because he and I are stale friends this day and he knows I'm gay
- 24:08and he will be in my life forever as a male friend. And he
- 24:15also has Alba Halsey and is blind. And I was on a dating site
- 24:22and I didn't even think about it. I was looking for a woman at
- 24:27the time, but he found me. He found me, and I'm like,
- 24:33you got have a big kidd, I'm gay, but well we'll leave
- 24:38it. And so I have an ex boyfriend, and I haven't necessarily discovered
- 24:47the gay coming the gay rainbow flag coming out of I am out of closet.
- 24:53By the way, people, this is not my first interview when I
- 24:56said I'm gay. I have said it on my own podcast, and yeah,
- 25:03people know I'm gay. But do I say it in hospital? No?
- 25:08But if people ask me in private, I will say, yes,
- 25:12I'm okay. But do I have male friends and that I love feeling?
- 25:18Yes? Have I experienced the langual friends in Phoenix? No? Is that
- 25:26something I want to do? Yes, But when it comes to me having
- 25:33a relation, yep. The number one will is and my aide. People
- 25:41know this publicly is whoever my partner is in real life, and I'm talking
- 25:48partner. They will never ever, ever, ever, and I emphasize never
- 25:53ever be my aid. They will be my partner. They will never be
- 26:00my aide. Now, if they want to help me with certain stuff,
- 26:07that's fine, but I think it posts a lot of straining on the plumber
- 26:15if they become now this is my personal belief, and if they become the
- 26:22person's care taker, that changes the whole dynamic, and of course disable old
- 26:32people cannot get married because if they're on Social Security and this is a public
- 26:40fact. You guys can look it up. And so if they are social
- 26:45Security, they get to socially guilty taken away. So it's a fine line.
- 26:51And so you did. It's funny you say that because I just think
- 26:55I got engaged to my fiance. She is also a sep he. And
- 27:00of course we're worried about the benefits thing when marriage happens and whatnot. But
- 27:04you know, it's interesting talk about that because that's weighing on my mind all
- 27:08the time. Is doesn't hurt some of this ability who has benefits to get
- 27:14married? It's it's insane to think that way. No, no, and
- 27:18so I would, I would. They would have to my pun and this
- 27:26is my person, open me and my princess, because we're not talking about
- 27:32nine and ninety normals. We're talking about a princess. My princess would have
- 27:37to love me for me, not just say I'm dating a woman because she
- 27:45has a disability, and let's feel sorry for that woman and let me rescue
- 27:51her. Let's it's not the princism. It's not the princess and he it's
- 27:59definitely not Stolly book Love, My love is like a stilly book stoy.
- 28:04Nope, So does that mean you have twenty four hour AID coverage? If
- 28:08if your partner is not gonna be your caregiver, do you have twenty four
- 28:11our A cover? I have, and now aid's coming in morning, aids
- 28:17coming in the afternoon. But as I get old, I bought my condo
- 28:22full long term camp pur business because yes, by the condo fall term camp
- 28:27business. Yes, people can say wow, yes, people can dodge office
- 28:33and are listening. But yes, I bought my condo my sting bead doing
- 28:37condoulong to camp purposiness. But I will tell you that the Saber community,
- 28:51I guess as we're talking about this is it's very like I'm gonna say,
- 28:55but we're very active in that department. If you have dating and romance and
- 29:00people don't realize that do that? No? No, And I have not
- 29:06found miss Princess for me yet, But I don't care. If she is
- 29:12a class country. I don't care if she is in Phoenix, I don't
- 29:18care. Tell me about your speech because did you find sorry the podcast was
- 29:27going to be difficult or were you like that confident I'm gonna do this like,
- 29:30tell us about this speech development. I've always looked using, say,
- 29:37using speech dictation. So when I got to Malkin in the book and I'm
- 29:42like, well, how the hell am I supposed to maulkin that book,
- 29:47I come a win and I'm like, well, I'm gonna start. I
- 29:52started listening to podcasts because I wrote a book. And then when I typed
- 29:57into Apple iTunes at the time making the pup button dance on the iPhone.
- 30:03Now at the podcast there was when I did this ins album Mahlesy, there
- 30:08was absolutely absolutely nothing. And so therefore I thought, I make that mit
- 30:18my niche niche, whatever you call it. And I say whatever you call
- 30:22it people, because that's how I say it. And then so I decided
- 30:29to make that my niche niche. And then I decided to promote the book
- 30:36along with interviewing people. And I still have that. And when it comes
- 30:41to my speech and pament, yes, I have done years and the years
- 30:48and the years of speech but and I still have a little bit of it.
- 30:52I still have a little bit speech impediment. And when I get tired,
- 30:59my speech goes out the door, thank you very much. And all
- 31:03when I'm stressed, when speech goes out store and it's and so it is
- 31:15interesting being in the spotlight having a speech and handiment which you can't really pick
- 31:22up on. I can, but people that have CP can. And so
- 31:27it is interesting being spotlight and having a space embediment. But how to get
- 31:34rid of the speech ebendment? Quickly do a podcast and kick it off with
- 31:41one of your feels and what in the office space as episode number one?
- 31:51Oh no, I didn't do a trailer. I didn't deal a solo episode.
- 31:55I kicked it off vite as an interview podcast and that's still still number
- 32:04one. And then I just said, well, if it's sixth slaw and
- 32:09sixth the law, and I I gave myself a challenge. I'm type give
- 32:15me a challenge. I'd taken head on, give me a back suggery.
- 32:21I'll take you that head on my choice. By the way, my back
- 32:23sugery this time is my choice. Last time it wasn't. And because of
- 32:30this, thank you very much, and is quite common in stable halls.
- 32:37How important? How important is it when the people with disabilities own it and
- 32:43don't hate themselves sport? Do you feel like some people hate themselves because they
- 32:46have a disability and don't want to own it or how do you what's your
- 32:50view on that. A lot of people don't want to own it. And
- 32:59that's what I'm saying, that you own it. You know what I mean.
- 33:01And it took me a long time. The only reason why I own
- 33:06it is because I got emotionally and physically abused and I was in a house
- 33:13that was following down around me. So I decided to make him move,
- 33:19sell my house, make him move to think and says oh, I wanted
- 33:22to sell the house in twenty ten, that did not happen. After my
- 33:25mom died, but that did not happen. I wanted to move my dad
- 33:30and I to a cheap becaussive would be safe, but that did not happen.
- 33:35So by the time he got diagnosed it's canton. I knew he was
- 33:38going to either come home disabled or dead. Became he didn't come home so
- 33:49dead and phel be and so I had I made the decision to sell my
- 33:55house. My mom, my step mom, was at work when I made
- 34:00this decision. I sat down with my team and my team goes, we
- 34:07have a problem, and I said, I know we do, and he
- 34:13My team did the numbers and I said, well, I kind of have
- 34:21a thing I want to tell your guests. And my team left it up
- 34:25to me to sell the house. And my lawyer and my financial advis are
- 34:31lots of apps to me to sell the house. And they I remember with
- 34:38tears in my eyes. I mean my lawyer, I am near credits,
- 34:43and I said, I want to sell themselves because my look, my financial
- 34:49advisor gave me three options. He goes, well, we can get the
- 34:55money from somewhere, we can modify this house. All we could just sell
- 35:02a house, move you to a cheaper constant stick was ended up being in
- 35:09Arizona. It was supposed to be the east coast, but it landed being
- 35:14Azela. And I decided to sell my house, take the capital out of
- 35:22my house and ask in Colidal and then buy myself a house. And the
- 35:31living stick was this a childhood home? You're talking about winter or this is
- 35:37a childholme I sold my child. Yes, that's a lot. And what
- 35:42I mean by that is people with his bloodies, we tend to have to
- 35:45think about the day to day, where they're gonna have service, where they're
- 35:46gonna you know, how health is every day. So now you're adding this,
- 35:51so is it? How smart is it? And not saying most are?
- 35:57But to be financially sound with her disability is that? So? Is
- 36:00that important to talk about? Like how we all learned the financial soundness of
- 36:06our lives as well as the health. Yes. Yes, And a lot
- 36:10of the reasons why I moved down here is because my health was awful in
- 36:22Aspen, Colonna and the one I was house found due to the weather and
- 36:27due to my mom having my stepmom having a full time job and leaving me
- 36:31with aids eight hours a day. Yeah, that was a good one to
- 36:36get close to the aim. And then my stemom expects me to get close
- 36:42to her. I don't think. So you leave for eight hours a day,
- 36:45How the heck am I supposed to get close to you? And so,
- 36:51yeah, that was a stepmom steps dot up waiting to happen. She's
- 36:57no longer in my life, so as my stepsism know as my step aunt.
- 37:04And so I feel like a lot of these experiences have helped you shape
- 37:08your book. And so when someone buys your book, win, Charles,
- 37:14I win. What can they look forward to? It sounds like you have
- 37:17the very spunky personality you're not afraid to speak your mind. So is that
- 37:22what they see in the book? They well, that's the original book.
- 37:27Well, that's the book that kicks off of the podcast, that kicks off
- 37:32me as a motivation. When I'll speaker, they will see them all mild
- 37:36side of me. And now that i'm they won't see the spicy side of
- 37:42me in that book. They will see the mule inside of me. But
- 37:46now that I'm in the phoenix, as I'm working on how to book a
- 37:52novel and then a spice book that's out of everyone comes own good to my
- 37:59own, but I would wanting to do it. They still people want my
- 38:04mom, my bilot to mom who was dying, shotten me off easy and
- 38:08then gave me another book idea. So this another book idea has been brewing
- 38:15it since two seven ten. Now it's time. She wanted me to be
- 38:21in a safe space, and she told me this by telem passively, and
- 38:28so she wanted me to be in a safe space to write the second book,
- 38:32which is the way out of my comfort zone. And some people will
- 38:37be surprised by that. But they don't see the spicy side of me in
- 38:45that book. They see the more mutant breathing sign of me now that and
- 38:51yes people, I still don't do a johnsone, And yes people, I'm
- 38:55making did you brob did you grow up writing? When? Did were you
- 39:00write? Your whole life? Right now? I was a teacher. I
- 39:04this home. Things gone because my mom died and she was the biggest champion
- 39:12on the me so last disabilities. And so my mommy died, was here
- 39:17when your mom was here, tell us about why she inspired you to be
- 39:21creative, because obviously you've got a creative mind to write a book and to
- 39:24be yourself to podcast, or that she inspired that creative mind while she was
- 39:30here with you. My dad was. I get the entrepreneur spi from my
- 39:39dad's side. I get the no nonsense spirit for my dad's side. But
- 39:45my mom taught me how to live a life with the disability without being well
- 39:52with me all right? On that note, On that note, I got
- 39:58time for my dad. Yeah. I gotta say, you seem like if
- 40:01someone told you no, you can't do that, you're going to use that
- 40:04as amon and say yes I can, Yes I can. What's the biggest
- 40:08thing that has pissed you off when they say no, you can't do this.
- 40:13What have you proven to people or want to prove to people that you're
- 40:15still working at If you will that you can do it well, I I
- 40:22shocked people when I will tell the story publicly, because hence to why I'm
- 40:29having back surgery. And we'll be calling this people a week before my back
- 40:34surgery. By the time this comes out, I will be becoming so said
- 40:38back, so do And so I went to Scolios's doctor down here, and
- 40:46we have two phenomenal medical systems down here. Two one is on a house
- 40:55and one is been in a house. I went to someone else to see
- 41:00this scoliosis doctor and these slices. Doctor says, you're fine, go away,
- 41:10you have scoliosis. You'll find this. Nothing we can do, I
- 41:15said, and I had. I had a person with me at that time.
- 41:20She was shut up taking notes. And then she took notes and I
- 41:27said, there's suffercing. No, I don't have scoliosis. There's suffercing more
- 41:32wrong with my back. There's suffthing wrong with my back. I want X
- 41:37rays please. I want you to get the oils to go get X rays.
- 41:44So we go on this wild goose chase to find X rays. They
- 41:50tell me oh, and everyone keeps telling me I need Ahil lift to go
- 41:55get X rays just because they see me in Aladre. Don't make assumptions.
- 42:01People, don't make assumptions a bond body. If you see persons in Voltaire,
- 42:09don't make assumptions that they can't walk. Or if you see a person
- 42:15with one leg like Fabmin with Alex, don't make a put don't make assumptions.
- 42:22And he can't hobble with clutches, thank you. And the reason why
- 42:28I said that is because the zoom pictures him standing with clutches, basically,
- 42:35And so I say that with love, and so don't assume that people can
- 42:39hobble, can't hobble, and don't assume that people can't stand up on their
- 42:45own get up on the bed, and you know this is this is great.
- 42:49I want to ask you about this. I just feel like people assume
- 42:53and maybe I'm I'm in a fault too, because if I see someone in
- 42:57a power wheelchair that I may not know, I figure they know someone here
- 43:00in New York it's such a small community, right, But does that piss
- 43:02you off? If someone's like, oh, do you know so and so
- 43:06because they're in a chair also, you know wheel chair. Also, I
- 43:08got that a lot in Aspen. I'm like, no, can we please
- 43:15stop theft now? Yeah, and so I got that a lot play basically,
- 43:21but no, not now that's about But I said too, So I
- 43:27said to the stock that I want x ys. We go and get x
- 43:30y's. That was an interesting feeling himself, because they didn't believe me that
- 43:36I had power my legs, lily, and they said, well, the
- 43:39only place that has a play a lift is this one accual at place all
- 43:46the way downtown Phoenix. Thank you very much. And so and for those
- 43:52of you that know down to Phoenix, you know, no Phoenix, you
- 43:57know Scottsdale. Scottsdale a place in itself, and then this downtown Phoenix.
- 44:04So I drive all the way downtown Phoenix. I go to the X way
- 44:08place. The X ray text says, oh something is mom, and my
- 44:15medical liaison just looks at them. I'm like, oh, something's mom.
- 44:22But X ray texts can't tell you what's the mom by legally, by law,
- 44:30and so I knew when I got to that X ray something with the
- 44:35mom. Well, by the time I took him back to my doctor,
- 44:38they go loops her Scolos's fusion had failed. So I have now which I
- 44:51won't have as of to say, a full twenty three by about two pm,
- 44:57Phoenix says all the time, if all of a sudden's don't call plan,
- 45:00I have now failed. Back to joy Cynem, it had failed sixteen
- 45:07years ago. No one told me, and we think it's because of the
- 45:13CP tone of something. And then I got a lot taking out because I
- 45:17brooke the law don't ask out, and so I've had nothing but issues with
- 45:24this back and now it's got them to the point where I have had I
- 45:31have a screw that's attached to the bone, which is not good. And
- 45:38so I said, I want this done. I want to think it out.
- 45:43I want it done. I don't care how long it takes. They
- 45:45said it's going to tank. Originally they told me four to five hours,
- 45:53and now they're saying five and a half. I'm hopefully it's four. But
- 46:00if it's fine and a have it and a half. I'm hopeful, let's
- 46:06eas by for it to find outs not five and a half. But if
- 46:10it's fine and a half, five and a half. So yeah, insurance
- 46:15looking, isn't it is insurance helping you with this? Or oh yeah,
- 46:20in chance, in chance is helping me with this? That's this has been
- 46:29so eye opening. I have a I have a couple of things that I
- 46:32want to ask you. First of all, you know comedy, because I
- 46:36feel like I got some comedy in you and a spicy side. This comedianor
- 46:39you know her, she's from vermonth uh Tina Ramo. Have you seen her
- 46:45work on TikTok at all? No? I haven't, And he is going
- 46:50to have to send me a link because I know about John Blue, So
- 46:58I wondered if Blu who's a comedian, you guys, you need to look
- 47:04gosh blew up. He had CPA as well, and he's made it in
- 47:07the comedian Well, and Josh hung Fitz is my guy. He's the guy
- 47:14on one leg. He just talks. He does all those Halloween costumes.
- 47:16He's awesome. Okay, But when I got to ask you this, would
- 47:22you ever get up on a stage and cause you got some humor, a
- 47:25little dark humor, I gotta say too, would you talk about it on
- 47:29a stand up stage? I feel like you'd fit well. You got the
- 47:31it rolls naturally with you. Maybe maybe I would, Maybe maybe I would,
- 47:37But I am Molan sia and invited and honest then I am a stand
- 47:44up comedian. Obviously, if your back's not doing well, that's kind of
- 47:50debilitating. But you don't seem to be one to let anything debilitate you.
- 47:54So that's that's kudos to you. What do you do for leisure in Phoenix?
- 48:00Like? What do you get to go to a diamondback games? Sons
- 48:02games? Are you sports gown down there or what? Nope, I am
- 48:07I'm so busy. My leisure time is listening to a podcast, listening to
- 48:15music. My leader of time is actually singing lessons. I don't do it
- 48:21professionally yet, but we're getting into that point. And but I am an
- 48:28amateur singer. And so my leasure, my leader of time is writing a
- 48:36hoss, my god, write an ass, which I'm getting back to write
- 48:40an ass ask for my back. So and so that really, when you're
- 48:46dealing with a hoss and hip ho SAPPI, you're dealing with a O A
- 48:52thousand account animal know you can't be on the phone, No, you have
- 48:58to be contall of the old body and the hass. And so that's I
- 49:02know leave you time and people know I do that. Is your saddle adapted
- 49:07for you or is a regular satele? No, it's a normal sattle.
- 49:12Very cool, all right. When I got to ask you about this because
- 49:16it just been and I've seen jockey's fall off horses all the time, it's
- 49:21kind of amazing that that happened. So kudos for staying upright on them.
- 49:25How long did it take to learn that? It took me a to be
- 49:30a good amateulna. It's gonna take it took me about a month and it's
- 49:37going to take me about a month to learn how to control my own body
- 49:45weight again. And I used to be adapted snowballing as well, give that
- 49:50up to move to Phoenix hands on, So I yeah, I know asking's
- 49:55a big snowboard town. When you had the surgery, are you missing work?
- 50:00Like? Do you work on the daily as well? As? Are
- 50:02you? I am? I am a full time content preyer and people have
- 50:08given me Grayson space, which I'm very great fog. They know my surgery
- 50:15is public knowledge. They know my surgery is I kept not my fan base
- 50:22updated, because one thing I will tell you is they care my fan base.
- 50:30Most people when they listen to a podcast that they love, they came
- 50:35about their hosts more than they can about people they're interviewing. Let's say,
- 50:39you know, interviewing Michelle Obama. Yes, they will care about that interview
- 50:45then, but the average person walking down the street and the average person on
- 50:52pot the match, thank you very much, they don't care about you know.
- 51:00So I will also say this, I find myself more comfortable talking to
- 51:04people instead of talking about my own stories. But I feel like you're telling
- 51:07me and all these other podcasts right here, tell your own story. That's
- 51:10why people listen. Right Be authentic, Be authentic, and my god,
- 51:19people like you survived, what you did, what you're having what now?
- 51:25And So my work, my work is a full time content creator. And
- 51:30yes, I make a minimal amount a little bit of money to support my
- 51:37full time content creation. Yes, I'm getting dead on my financial end of
- 51:45it. Now that I'm in a safe space and now that I have learned
- 51:50how to truly be Adolf, and so that's always fun. And because a
- 51:58lot of disabled people think that mommy and daddy, grandma and grandpa, I'm
- 52:04going to do it for you. Well, mommy and daddy, grandma,
- 52:07and Grandpa are going to die someday and you are going to have to learn
- 52:15how to deal with your own disability. Sounds I got to pull yourself up
- 52:20from the bootsteps after your parents. Yeah. Yeah, I learned how to
- 52:25be adult by the age of twenty three. By the age of thirty two,
- 52:35going on thirty three, I had another blow to my life which I
- 52:40lost my dad. And my mom was fifty eight once she died, and
- 52:47my dad was sixty eight when he died. I find it soret of stigmatic
- 52:57that you know, oh, you're gonna with your parents for work because you
- 53:00have a disability. People literally think that in their mind, and you're right
- 53:05here on this podcast when and I'm sorry you grow podcasts. Well, what's
- 53:08your podcast name? By the way, CEO Disability, I'm slowly transitioning into
- 53:19it was formerly known as asked When, And I'm solely transitioning from CEO Disability
- 53:29to Winning Win at Life, which I use my own name to both my
- 53:39podcast. Yes, I used my name as a bland name too, but
- 53:44when in life, I'm solely transitioning back. Still doing is getting in a
- 53:49way by now people, so I can't be fully walking. But I might
- 53:54as well be fully walking. And so to those that you that hear this
- 54:01and one to come on my podcast, you more than welcome do it.
- 54:06You're just going to wait a little bit because now I'm taking interviews in and
- 54:13then I'm fully rampling it back up in August. Well that I would love
- 54:20to do a collaboration again. This has been great and uh and yeah,
- 54:23if you want to reach out to when you have a website as well,
- 54:27right when the THEO disability dot we believe dot com all just google my name
- 54:35win Charles w I N C H A I L A S. And my
- 54:39podcast could be found everywhere and Winny at life will still be the same feed,
- 54:49So don't want we'll go into the same speed. But yeah, but
- 54:57I finally found fan, I finally found my name and form my podcast after
- 55:02ten years. Mind you, I know ten years on the podcast are good
- 55:07for me as well. It's amazing. So when would love to have you
- 55:12back on once again? Is your healing and then ramping back up, let's
- 55:15connect again and then maybe I'll jump on yours if you want. It's up
- 55:20to you. I would love to do that. Yeah, all right,
- 55:24let's say in touch. That's Win, Charles and I Win. Is the
- 55:30is the book and so much more. Just just look up when Charles thanks
- 55:34so much, Thank you,
