- 0:29on the groundbreaking analysis of sample from the asteroid
- 0:33Bennu, courtesy of NASA's OSIRIS Rex mission.
- 0:37This is spanned 7 years, culminating with the delivery of
- 0:40a precious cargo of asteroid fragments to Earth on September
- 0:4424th, 2023. The landing is in a secluded
- 0:48area of the Utah Test and Training Range operated by the
- 0:52Department of Defense, and it went off without a hitch.
- 0:56Now OSIRIS Rex, an acronym encapsulating the mission's
- 0:59multifaceted goals, has returned with what is believed to be
- 1:02remnants from the dawn of our own solar system some 4.5
- 1:06billion years ago. And the University of Arizona's
- 1:09dedicated team is at the forefront, employing cutting
- 1:12edge technology to decipher the secrets held by these dark
- 1:15particles from Bennu. With the modest 200 milligrams
- 1:18of the Bennu sample to work with, the team has identified
- 1:21over 1000 particles, some as large as 3.5 centimeters,
- 1:26offering an unprecedented glimpse into the building blocks
- 1:28of our solar system. Now these samples are teeming
- 1:31with minerals containing water alongside a wealth of carbon,
- 1:35nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorus, making them a significant
- 1:38repository of primordial material.

- 3:15phosphorus. These elements, which are all

- 3:24untouched by the processes that have altered similar substances
- 3:28on Earth. Now we're waiting for this
- 3:31analysis, and it'll happen on the 55th Lunar and Planetary
- 3:34Science Conference, and there's over 70 abstracts submitted for
- 3:38this. The conference promises to shed
- 3:40new light on the asteroid's composition and its implications
- 3:43for understanding the solar system's history.
- 3:46Now 1 Intriguing aspect of the Bennu samples is the unique
- 3:48isotopic composition setting them apart from meteorites found
- 3:52on Earth. And this distinction suggests
- 3:54that the asteroid contains materials not typically
- 3:56accessible through meteorite study.
- 3:58Offering new avenues for research into the Solar System's
- 4:01building blocks are particularly novel.
- 4:04Finding is the presence of a phosphate crust in Bennu

- 5:34ensure their integrity, and with the full opening of the TAG Sam
- 5:38head which held the Bennu samples, there's a lot of
- 5:41challenges and excitement inherit in space exploration.
- 5:44There's a lot of discovery to be happening right now and despite
- 5:47technical hurdles from the team, they were a part of the TAG Sam
- 5:53that was stuck. The team's persistence paid off,
- 5:56allowing for a comprehensive cataloging of the Asteroids
- 6:00bounty. Now, the upcoming release of
- 6:03more Bennu sample catalog will mark a significant milestone,
- 6:07enabling scientists worldwide to request samples for their own
- 6:10research. Now, this effort will broaden
- 6:12the scope of Bennu's study, contributing to a more nuanced
- 6:15understanding of the asteroid and its place in our solar
- 6:18system's history. And the analysis of Bennu
- 6:22samples is an interdisciplinary endeavor, involving a range of
- 6:26sophisticated instruments, from optical and electron microscopes
- 6:30to the cutting edge nano Sims. The team is equipped to delve
