- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the news hour. The US announced today that
- 0:03Speaker 1: it's lifting the blockade of the Strait of Hormones to
- 0:06Speaker 1: let ships pass through. Sea Traffic there has been at
- 0:09Speaker 1: a standstill since nearly the start of the war, and
- 0:12Speaker 1: Iran's supreme leader, much the Bahamine, blessed the deal with
- 0:15Speaker 1: the US, saying it was quote desperation that drove President
- 0:19Speaker 1: Trump to the bargaining table. Les Landers begins our coverage
- 0:22Speaker 1: again tonight.
- 0:24Speaker 2: First of all, I think the President's peace plan in
- 0:27Speaker 2: Iran as already bearing real fruits for the American people.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Vice President J. D Vance, a self professed skeptic of
- 0:33Speaker 3: foreign wars, is now the face of President Donald Trump's
- 0:36Speaker 3: tentative agreement to end the war with Iran.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Their economy is in absolute dire strait. But in order
- 0:43Speaker 2: for them to get any integration into the world economy,
- 0:46Speaker 2: they're going to have to show us and verify for
- 0:48Speaker 2: us that they are changing their behavior. And that's why
- 0:51Speaker 2: the deal is set up in the way that it is.
- 0:53Speaker 3: The fourteen point Memorandum of Understanding opens the Strait of
- 0:56Speaker 3: Hormuz with the US ending the naval blockade and Iran
- 0:59Speaker 3: and during pre warship movement for sixty days, while lifting
- 1:03Speaker 3: sanctions immediately on Iranian oil and petroleum products. It also
- 1:08Speaker 3: sets up future talks on the nuclear ambitions of the country,
- 1:11Speaker 3: while forcing the Iranian regime to downblend their highly enriched geranium.
- 1:16Speaker 3: The agreement was read to reporters yesterday. The White House
- 1:19Speaker 3: has yet to release the text. The United Nations Nuclear
- 1:23Speaker 3: Watchdog welcomed the interim agreement today. Director General Raphael Grossi
- 1:27Speaker 3: said his agency would be involved in technical discussions to
- 1:30Speaker 3: implement the agreement.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Now it's for us to sit down with our American colleagues,
- 1:35Speaker 4: are Iranian colleagues, and start formulating the concrete steps that
- 1:43Speaker 4: will have to be to be taken.
- 1:46Speaker 3: In Tehran today, some Iranians reacted with skepticism and pessimism
- 1:50Speaker 3: about the newly signed deal, not as I have no
- 1:54Speaker 3: hope at all that this agreement will be carried out
- 1:56Speaker 3: because America has proven numerous times that it's nothing but
- 1:59Speaker 3: a liar, a sentiment echoed by Israeli's today.
- 2:03Speaker 5: I hot, if you don't know much about it, I
- 2:06Speaker 5: just know that it doesn't stop the war, and it
- 2:11Speaker 5: doesn't stop the hate. And it sucked for me because
- 2:16Speaker 5: I really believed in Trump and I believe that it
- 2:19Speaker 5: would end the war.
- 2:20Speaker 3: But Israel and has Bullah, neither a party to the agreement,
- 2:23Speaker 3: present a potential stumbling block on the ground in Lebanon.
- 2:27Speaker 3: The memorandum of understanding says that Lebanon is included in
- 2:30Speaker 3: the ceasefire, but today's attacks killed at least three people
- 2:35Speaker 3: in southern Lebanon, according to Lebanon State News Agency. Iran
- 2:40Speaker 3: has said continued Israeli attacks would breach the agreement. The
- 2:44Speaker 3: angry denunciations of the deal from Israeli leaders drew unusually
- 2:48Speaker 3: sharp criticism from Vice President Vance.
- 2:50Speaker 2: If I was in the cabinet of the Israeli government,
- 2:53Speaker 2: I might not be attacking the only powerful ally that
- 2:57Speaker 2: I have anywhere left in the entire world.
- 3:00Speaker 3: More shifting rhetoric on one of America's strongest allies that
- 3:02Speaker 3: reflects a White House where broader messaging is apparently malleable.
- 3:07Speaker 3: In February, the day the war began, President Trump's view
- 3:10Speaker 3: on Iran's missiles was clear.
- 3:12Speaker 5: We're going to destroy their missiles and raise their missile
- 3:16Speaker 5: industry to the ground. It will be totally again obliterated.
- 3:22Speaker 3: And then just yesterday, I'm saying that if other countries
- 3:25Speaker 3: have them, it's a little bit unfair for them not
- 3:28Speaker 3: to have something. In March, the President originally suggested that
- 3:31Speaker 3: regime change was an objective and the Iranian people could
- 3:34Speaker 3: take control of their government. But we've had regime change.
- 3:38Speaker 4: You look already. We're dealing with different people than anybody's
- 3:41Speaker 4: dealt with before.
- 3:42Speaker 3: It's a whole different group of people. So I would
- 3:45Speaker 3: consider that regime change. But on Tuesday he said, now.
- 3:49Speaker 5: You talk about regime change.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I never cared about regime change.
- 3:52Speaker 4: It's never reports.
- 3:53Speaker 3: And the administration has lowered expectations about what happens to
- 3:56Speaker 3: the Iranian stockpile of highly enriched uranium, saying we.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Have to take that that.
- 4:03Speaker 3: I call it the nuclear dust, right, but we have
- 4:06Speaker 3: to take that nuclear dust. We're going to take it,
- 4:09Speaker 3: and that's part of our negotiation with the RIM. But
- 4:12Speaker 3: the agreement only stipulates that iron must downblend the material
- 4:15Speaker 3: on site, pending broader negotiations.
- 4:18Speaker 2: They have promised not to enrich. They have promised that
- 4:21Speaker 2: they would allow inspectors in to destroy that highly enriched stockpile,
- 4:25Speaker 2: and then of course it's not usable anymore. You take
- 4:27Speaker 2: it somewhere else.
- 4:28Speaker 3: This afternoon, the President made sure it's help the stock market,
- 4:31Speaker 3: saying the stock.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Market just hit a new all time high, the four
- 4:36Speaker 5: oh one case just hit a new all time high,
- 4:39Speaker 5: and oil is dropping like a rock.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Other than that, it's another day in Paradise. Meantime, Vance
- 4:46Speaker 3: was expected to attend a signing ceremony with the Iranians
- 4:48Speaker 3: in Switzerland on Friday, but told reporters today that timing
- 4:52Speaker 3: may slide into the weekend for the PBS News Hour,
