- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Psalm 122.
- 0:20And this is another one of the song of a sense.
- 0:23And this would be one of the 15 songs that the children of
- 0:27Israel would sing as they went to Jerusalem for the three
- 0:32annual feasts of the Jewish calendar.
- 0:34And this is one of those songs. It's one that's particularly
- 0:39praying for and thankful for their capital city of Jerusalem,
- 0:44where the temple was, which was where all of their feasts and
- 0:50festivals and things would take place.
- 0:53So we're going to look at this Psalm.
- 0:56This one's actually written by David.
- 0:58Not all of these psalms have had that inscription.
- 1:02So some of them by omission of the phrase were not written by
- 1:06David, but this particular 1 is. So David was the one that
- 1:11actually set up the nation's capital there at Jerusalem.
- 1:16And so this I can almost kind of picture him writing this perhaps
- 1:22after the city has been won. And especially given what we'll
- 1:28read inside of here, this would be once the ark of the Covenant
- 1:33was taken to Jerusalem. And then as that's there, and
- 1:39then as he's preparing and assembling materials so that his
- 1:43son Solomon would be able to build the temple there in
- 1:47Jerusalem. I can see as a result of those
- 1:51actions taking place, David writes this song and then
- 1:56teaches it to the people. And it's like, hey, you guys
- 1:58should sing this. You know, you're, you're coming
- 2:01here to Jerusalem. 3 * A and so why don't you sing this song as
- 2:05you come along? Let's read through and I think
- 2:08we'll see some really cool things, even for our lives.
- 2:13I have seen this Psalm be misused before.
- 2:17So I do want to take note about what the Psalm both does and
- 2:21does not mean for us as New Testament believers.
- 2:25And I think as we look at some of that, we will be well served
- 2:30through looking at the Word today.
- 2:32Verse #1 begins. I rejoiced with those who said
- 2:35to me, let's go to the House of Yahweh.
- 2:38Our feet were standing within your gates.
- 2:40Jerusalem. Jerusalem, built as a city,
- 2:43should be solidly united where the tribes, Yahweh's tribes, go
- 2:48up to give thanks to the name of Yahweh.
- 2:51This is an ordinance for Israel. Their Thrones for judgment are
- 2:56placed Thrones for the House of David.
- 2:59Pray for the well-being of Jerusalem.
- 3:02May those who love you be secure.
- 3:05May there be peace within your walls, security within your
- 3:08fortresses. Because of my brothers and
- 3:11friends, I will say, may peace be in you because of the House
- 3:15of Yahweh our God. I will pursue your prosperity.
- 3:21All right, So what can we learn from this today?
- 3:25Well, first let's look at what this Psalm is directly stating.
- 3:29So it's kind of split up into three sections.
- 3:31There's the first 2 verses, then verses 3 through 5, then verses
- 3:346 through 9, verses one and two. There is a joy about going to
- 3:40the House of the Lord. So David here says, I rejoiced
- 3:44with those who said to me, let's go to the House of Yahweh.
- 3:47Our feet were standing within your gates.
- 3:50Jerusalem here, even though so much of this particular Psalm is
- 3:56talking about like it uses the name of Jerusalem, what is
- 4:00actually being discussed is the Tabernacle, and then in later
- 4:05generations the temple. It was where the worship of God
- 4:09was. This Psalm, though, it mentions
- 4:13Jerusalem so many times, Jerusalem is not actually the
- 4:16point of the Psalm. The temple, the House of Yahweh
- 4:20is the point of the Psalm, and it's because that is where
- 4:24worship occurs. It is because that is where the
- 4:28Lord's name and people give thanks to the Lord there.
- 4:32That is why this Psalm is here. Why do I mention that?
- 4:37I have heard some people misuse this Psalm as a way to say we
- 4:44have to perhaps support all of the governmental choices of the
- 4:53Israeli government that is currently in this exact same
- 4:58portion of land with a city named Jerusalem on that exact
- 5:04location. So I've heard people say, well,
- 5:07you know, here it says pray for the peace of Jerusalem, pray for
- 5:11the well-being of Jerusalem. I'm going to look at that word
- 5:13real quick because I bet it's yeah, it is Shalom.
- 5:16So they say, all right, well, this is what God commands.
- 5:19And so therefore, I need to be aligned with every action and
- 5:27every military action that perhaps this one nation would
- 5:31take. Now, as you guys know, this is
- 5:34not a politics podcast. I just want to be faithful to
- 5:38say if you hear someone try to invoke this here as a I am
- 5:45endorsing this military action as a result of what Psalm 122
- 5:51says, they are divorcing their action and their reasoning from
- 5:57the context of this Psalm. The point of this Psalm is not
- 6:02even Jerusalem being a great location and the capital and all
- 6:09of these other things. That's not the point of this
- 6:12Psalm. The point of this Psalm is the
- 6:14worship of God from the very beginning in verse one.
- 6:17Let's go to the House of Yahweh. Now that being put to the side,
- 6:23I won't I won't even mention that again.
- 6:25I just want to get in your mind. This is not saying how do you
- 6:29deal with the geopolitical struggle of the Middle East in
- 6:322026. I almost said 2025 brand new
- 6:36year in 2026. No, the point of this is let
- 6:39let's worship God, let's be excited about the worship of God
- 6:44and let us ask for security and safety and peace and unity
- 6:50within where God is worshipped. So going back then to verse one,
- 6:58I want to say the point of this because it's the worship of God,
- 7:02we can apply this to our lives. There is a rejoicing here when
- 7:08there is going to the House of Yahweh.
- 7:11Now I know that I have mentioned it so many times here on this
- 7:17podcast. The House of the Lord is not
- 7:20Tabernacle Baptist Church. It is not 143 Bennett Rd.
- 7:25This building that I'm currently in with the sanctuary that we
- 7:28have over some stairs to my left, that is not the House of
- 7:33the Lord. We do not come to God's house
- 7:38when we go to church, when we assemble with other believers,
- 7:42that is not the House of God. God does not live here.
- 7:46He lives in Bryan, he lives in Kathy, he lives in Darrell, he
- 7:53lives in Samantha, he lives in Mary or Shelley or Shelby.
- 8:00He lives in each of us. You are God's house.
- 8:05Now, there can certainly be applicable things of because
- 8:10this is a place of worship for God.
- 8:13This is where we gather. This is where we assemble
- 8:16together. We want to try to take care of
- 8:20what God has given us, but that's not as a result of, you
- 8:23know, some particular chair or computer or carpet or whatever
- 8:29else have you belonging to God. It's because these are the
- 8:33resources that we utilize. And so we are supposed to take
- 8:36good care of all of our resources, including you and I.
- 8:43I think we need to have a renewed joy and excitement about
- 8:49being the House of the Holy Spirit, that we are called the
- 8:55temple of the Holy Spirit, who we have from God and we do not
- 8:59belong to ourselves anymore. I'll shoot straight with you
- 9:04guys because I'm just staring myself in the face.
- 9:07I'm not thinking of anyone in particular when I'm saying this.
- 9:10I know that there was a time and place in particularly American
- 9:17history where the church building was viewed as something
- 9:23incredibly sacred. And I'm not saying that's
- 9:26entirely bad or untoward. But I've seen some people care a
- 9:32lot more about random things at the church, like, you know, a
- 9:38little kid running in the church.
- 9:40And they care more about that than they care about their
- 9:44personal holiness. They care more about, you know,
- 9:49perhaps a carpet or a Pew than they do about their mouth of
- 9:54slander or gossip. And that is not the way that God
- 9:59intended it to work. The point is not we have a
- 10:03beautiful building and it should be viewed with awe and wonder
- 10:07that we can certainly be grateful for the great things
- 10:10that the Lord has given us. No, my friend, the most
- 10:13important thing that you and I can focus on is our walk with
- 10:17God, that we would love Him and love others in the way that we
- 10:22talk and think and act. We are the House of the Lord.
- 10:27Is there a joy for you that the Holy Spirit lives inside of you?
- 10:31Are you excited when you get up in the morning and you have time
- 10:35to interact with God himself within your spirit?
- 10:40Think about that. Like I, I love my wife and one
- 10:45of my favorite things about being married is that every
- 10:49single day I get to wake up and I get to talk to Samantha and
- 10:53all throughout the day, I can, you know, if I'm at work like I
- 10:56am right now, I can text Samantha or I can call her my,
- 10:59my son called me earlier today asking if he, I, I was given a
- 11:04year or two ago the Chronicles of Narnia books, all seven of
- 11:09them just in one giant book. And he is listening right now to
- 11:13the third book in that series, The Horse and His Boy, which is
- 11:18a tremendous, tremendous book. I love that book.
- 11:22And he was like, hey, dad, is it OK if I read the big book and
- 11:26just cracked me up that he asked that He doesn't need to ask
- 11:28that. It's not like a, you know, great
- 11:30heirloom or something. I think it's, you know, maybe
- 11:3220-30 bucks on Amazon and I was like, yeah, absolutely.
- 11:35But anyway, sorry, I, I got off track there.
- 11:38So I love being able to spend time with my wife and that the
- 11:43moment that I wake up, she's right there.
- 11:45And when I go to sleep, she's right there.
- 11:48When we were dating, we had a good, you know, year, maybe year
- 11:55and a half where we were long distance or when we were dating
- 11:58in college, you know, we'd go 2-3 months without being able to
- 12:03see each other in person. She was obviously out here in
- 12:06Maryland, 1 summer she was in Tennessee and I was back in
- 12:10Colorado or I was on one of our like ministry tour groups that
- 12:17were going around recruiting students to the college.
- 12:20And so I know what it's like to not have my loved one right
- 12:24there. I know what it's like to not
- 12:26experience their presence or be able to just talk to them
- 12:29whenever I want. We have God's own presence
- 12:33living inside of us and we overlook that.
- 12:36We don't care about it. We ignore Him.
- 12:39We silence Him when He does talk to us.
- 12:42But let's have a joy that we are the House of the Lord.
- 12:46Then let that spill over into every time that we get to
- 12:51interact with other believers in Jesus, we are going to the House
- 12:57of the Lord. I'm when I, we, we just had, at
- 13:00the time that I'm recording this, we had our elder meeting
- 13:04last night. And as I'm talking with Owen and
- 13:08Myron and Ron, Jim was sick and couldn't make it, but we'll
- 13:12forgive him for that. As I'm talking with them, I'm
- 13:15not just talking with human beings.
- 13:18I'm not just talking with Christians, I am talking to
- 13:21temples of the Holy Spirit. And so as we pray together, as
- 13:26we seek the face of God for our church, that we that I am
- 13:34interacting with the Holy Spirit and that's an amazing thing.
- 13:38And whether it's just a couple of individuals, whether it's the
- 13:41entire assembled church, together we can have joy when we
- 13:45come to the House of the Lord. This is why I think when God
- 13:51says that 7 things are an abomination to him, technically
- 13:57he says 6 things the Lord hates 7 are an abomination.
- 14:02Kind of how Hebrew poetry would work.
- 14:05You'd have whatever list of things and then you would add on
- 14:09one more that was either like one thing that was even better
- 14:13than all the rest or one thing that was even worse than all of
- 14:17the rest. And in that list of seven, you
- 14:21have the one that sows discord among the brothers and sisters.
- 14:27That's one that that stirs up fighting.
- 14:30And I think that God because of his love for his people, his
- 14:35love for his Spirit, operating and working within his church,
- 14:41blood bought and water washed and heaven bound, when there is
- 14:47animosity and bitterness and hatred within a local body of
- 14:51believers, it is a shame to the heart of God.
- 14:55It it hurts him deeply. So let's make a choice when we
- 14:59go to church. Church isn't a time where I'm
- 15:01going to kind of Duke it out with someone else and I'm going
- 15:04to argue and I'm going to this or that.
- 15:05No, when we interact with our brothers and sisters in the
- 15:09Lord, the attitude we need to have is joy, is hope, is a
- 15:14camaraderie and a unity that there should be an excitement
- 15:19about the worship of God with our brothers and sisters.
- 15:23So then I'm going to look at verses 3 through 5.
- 15:25Now don't worry, the rest of this will go very quickly
- 15:28because it's all building on those foundational elements of
- 15:30what I already mentioned. So verses 3 through 5, Jerusalem
- 15:33built as a city should be solidly united.
- 15:38Let's be united as the people of God in our worship together for
- 15:43him that we're not spiraling off into different factions and
- 15:48cliques like the Corinthian church where you had some people
- 15:51that were like, yeah, I'm team Paul, I'm team Apollos, I'm team
- 15:54Cephas, some people even I'm team Jesus.
- 15:58No, no, we are unified together. We are all in the same team.
- 16:01The one and only most important one is Jesus.
- 16:05And so we pursue and follow him together.
- 16:08We are united. Verse 4 where the tribes,
- 16:11Yahweh's tribes go up to give thanks to the name of this is an
- 16:16ordinance for Israel. When we gather together to
- 16:18worship, we are giving thanks to God.
- 16:22We thank him through our prayers.
- 16:24We thank him through our singing and our worship.
- 16:27We can even thank him through the fellowship that we have with
- 16:31one another that we love. Those that the world would go.
- 16:34Why in the world do those people love each other?
- 16:36When we can thank God for the unity that we have, we can thank
- 16:40the Lord through being thankful for His Word as it is preached
- 16:45and proclaimed, and as we respond to it.
- 16:47We can thank God for showing us the areas in our life in which
- 16:50we are not currently walking with God.
- 16:52And so we ought to, when we worship, we ought to give thanks
- 16:56to the name of Yahweh. And then verse 5, there Thrones
- 16:59for judgment are placed, Thrones of the House of David.
- 17:03Here as David's writing this, he's, you know, currently
- 17:06thinking about his actual family and, you know, the Crown Prince
- 17:10and the crown mother. I actually don't know how that
- 17:13worked because David had so many wives.
- 17:15I think eight or nine last time I checked.
- 17:20But as I think about this, I think of Jesus, the lion of the
- 17:24tribe of Judah, the descendant of David that will be seated
- 17:29forever and ever. And he is the one that we
- 17:32worship. We don't go to worship the Lord
- 17:34in some place that has, you know, a fallen king with
- 17:39multiple wives who committed adultery and murder and and
- 17:45lying. We don't serve that kind of
- 17:47king. We serve the one true king, to
- 17:50whom David was only a very imperfect picture.
- 17:55So then verses 6 through 9. What do we make of this
- 17:58statement? Pray for the well-being of
- 18:00Jerusalem. Pray for the Shalom of
- 18:03Jerusalem. This would be the call.
- 18:07Pray for the well-being of your church.
- 18:10Now this can also extend to you can also pray for the peace of
- 18:14your city where your church is. You can pray for the peace of
- 18:19your nation. That is a good thing to pray
- 18:21for. Jesus is the Prince of Peace,
- 18:23and so you'll never be, you'll never be in a bad spot praying
- 18:28for peace for anything. You can actually pray for the
- 18:31peace of literal Jerusalem right now in the Middle East if you so
- 18:35choose. But I think the most faithful
- 18:37application for New Testament believers of this verse is pray
- 18:41for the peace of your church. And then here's the prayer that
- 18:45he says, may those who love you be secure that there would be
- 18:48safety even within your church. He says may there be peace
- 18:52within your walls. May there not be infighting or
- 18:55gossip or something like that. May we experience peace both
- 18:58outside in in our city and in our neighborhood, and may we
- 19:03experience peace within our church.
- 19:06It says security within your fortresses.
- 19:10May we have peace both inside and outside of our church, he
- 19:13says. Because of my brothers and
- 19:15friends, I will say may peace be in you.
- 19:18It's out of love for the people inside that David wants
- 19:21Jerusalem new experience peace. You can't you.
- 19:24We should never be more concerned about the quote UN
- 19:27quote institution of the church or I'll say like the label
- 19:32Tabernacle Baptist Church. I should never be more concerned
- 19:35about Tabernacle Baptist Church than I am about the people that
- 19:39comprise Tabernacle Baptist Church, if you will.
- 19:43I need to love Darrell and Mary and I need to love Melissa and
- 19:51Rod and Emma and Seth more than I love this building or this
- 19:56place. And so I need to be more
- 19:59concerned about the people than about the property.
- 20:02So because of verse 8, because of my brothers and friends, I
- 20:06will say, may peace be in you because of the House of Yahweh,
- 20:10your our God, I will pursue your prosperity.
- 20:14We want our community to do well because as our community
- 20:19prospers, then it makes it so that our church is able to
- 20:23prosper as well within it. If our community goes into
- 20:26anarchy and destruction and chaos and crime, then it will
- 20:33affect our church. It will affect the people within
- 20:37our church as well as our actual, you know, property and
- 20:40buildings and things. And so we ought to seek the
- 20:43well-being, the peace of our church and our community.
- 20:47And then you can extend that out as far as you want.
- 20:50Nations and, and all of that. And because we have brothers and
- 20:54sisters in Christ all across the globe, it means that we do pray
- 20:57for peace all over the earth. I would love to hear from you.
- 21:04I, I'm certain especially for some people from particular
- 21:08backgrounds, you might have some thoughts on me saying this is
- 21:11not necessarily a political statement for 2026.
- 21:16This is a practical applicational statement for us
- 21:20as the people of God indwelt by the Holy Spirit in 2026.
- 21:24I would love to hear from you and thank you for tuning in.
- 21:28Next episode we're going to look at Psalm 123 and I'm looking
- 21:33forward to it. Have a wonderful day.
