- 0:15Speaker 1: With the arrival of Thursday comes at least the beginning
- 0:19Speaker 1: of the down. He'll run to the weekend with plenty
- 0:22Speaker 1: to discuss. Good afternoon, everybody, Welcome to the program here
- 0:25Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred of the Zone where
- 0:27Speaker 1: you can always listen to us for free on the
- 0:30Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app. Good afternoon to you. My name is Craig White.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Thanks so much for joining us with you each and
- 0:36Speaker 1: every weekday afternoon Monday through Friday from two pm to
- 0:40Speaker 1: five pm. So glad you could spend part of your
- 0:42Speaker 1: day with us. US includes the producer Jay Carman. It's
- 0:46Speaker 1: kind of a quiet evening sporting wise. Last night. I
- 0:53Speaker 1: know you're not down with watching Summer League in the NBA.
- 0:56Speaker 1: You've made that abundantly clear on this program. There was
- 1:00Speaker 1: the run up to the start of the Open Championship,
- 1:02Speaker 1: which we'll get into coming up of the next segment,
- 1:04Speaker 1: a little more detailed breakdown and the leaderboard update. There
- 1:08Speaker 1: are golfers still on the course, although play began like
- 1:12Speaker 1: around three o'clock this morning, Texas time, but they are,
- 1:16Speaker 1: they're underway and they're playing at Royal Birkdale, so we'll
- 1:20Speaker 1: have an update on all that So what did you
- 1:21Speaker 1: do with your evening last night since there wasn't much
- 1:24Speaker 1: in the way of the sporting life going on.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Oh nothing, just you know, mellow evening at home, cooked
- 1:29Speaker 2: some food for myself, got in front of the TV,
- 1:34Speaker 2: watched a little thirty Rock. I mean, I never hadn't
- 1:36Speaker 2: seen that before. Alison's gotten me into it. Talked to
- 1:39Speaker 2: some friends on the phone, did some chores, straightened up?
- 1:41Speaker 3: It was quiet.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Didn't you play swamped out any of the end of
- 1:45Speaker 1: the apartment issue or something? No, it was a noise
- 1:48Speaker 1: issue with your shower some, wasn't it.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Well, the water issues at my building have been on
- 1:55Speaker 2: and off, so now my water has been back for
- 1:57Speaker 2: a couple of weeks, but the shower makes.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Us screeching noise.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I probably should have reported it earlier, that's what a
- 2:04Speaker 2: good tenant does. But my neighbor reported it. They're like, yeah,
- 2:07Speaker 2: we gotta we got to get to the bottom of this.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Caled on you to apartment management.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Well, they had no way of knowing it was probably me,
- 2:16Speaker 2: but there's a weird noise in my walls. That's how
- 2:19Speaker 2: we're keeping ourselves entertained in this sporting oasis here. Sporing desert,
- 2:23Speaker 2: I should say, yeah.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Right, right, So did they get it fixed? I know
- 2:28Speaker 1: you had building maintenance people there yesterday.
- 2:30Speaker 3: They don't know what's causing it, and I hope it's.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Not not like some of the stuff that happens with
- 2:33Speaker 1: our board here in the studio here at the iHeart compound.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Occasionally we run into things and things are weird or
- 2:41Speaker 1: it sounds weird or clipped or cut or something or
- 2:44Speaker 1: this or that, and we don't know what it is.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And so you, like the good employee that you are,
- 2:49Speaker 1: unlike the good tenant, which apparently you aren't, but at
- 2:52Speaker 1: least a good employee that you are, you contact our
- 2:55Speaker 1: you know, our tech support. And that's a phrase, by
- 3:00Speaker 1: the way, that's a term that's really taken off as
- 3:04Speaker 1: the twenty first century has advanced tech support. And you've
- 3:08Speaker 1: gotten a hold of tech support and they respond, and
- 3:12Speaker 1: then when they respond sometimes responsible. We don't know, We
- 3:15Speaker 1: don't know what it was. So hopefully any further issues
- 3:20Speaker 1: we have will be okay. But everything's working all right today, right, Yeah?
- 3:24Speaker 1: If I have any issues today, knock on wood, that's good. Okay.
- 3:27Speaker 1: So as of this day or as of this time
- 3:30Speaker 1: at whatever two or four pm Central daylight time on
- 3:35Speaker 1: Thursday July sixteenth. You still have a squeaky shower.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Uh, yeah, and call it a little bit of a
- 3:43Speaker 3: screechy shower.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Wow.
- 3:44Speaker 2: It reminds me of my friend in college who had
- 3:46Speaker 2: a bit of a bit of a shreaky toilet. Go
- 3:50Speaker 2: in there and say, yeah, I'm going to going to
- 3:53Speaker 2: take a screamer wow.
- 3:55Speaker 1: So is it really uncomfortable when you take a shower
- 4:00Speaker 1: there with the noise? I mean, because you're right there
- 4:01Speaker 1: in the center of it, as opposed to somebody one
- 4:04Speaker 1: floor down beneath you, or here's it coming through the wall.
- 4:07Speaker 3: It's it's really not that big a deal to me
- 4:10Speaker 3: that the pressure is a little stronger than it was
- 4:12Speaker 3: before the fix. So I have a feeling that's going
- 4:15Speaker 3: to be the fix.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Is it like the pressure like Kramer has, you know,
- 4:18Speaker 1: with whether they call it the something four thousand where
- 4:22Speaker 1: that they used to wash elephants in the circus with
- 4:24Speaker 1: around gosh and the pressure knocks him down to the
- 4:27Speaker 1: knocks him down to the tub or something like that.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Is it Is it that kind of strong? No?
- 4:32Speaker 2: Not, it's not to that extreme, but it's definitely stronger
- 4:35Speaker 2: than usual. I'll know in a few days when my
- 4:37Speaker 2: water bill maybe looks like a golf course or an
- 4:39Speaker 2: AI data center.
- 4:40Speaker 3: But hopefully that's not the case.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Yeah, But to the best of your knowledgers still working
- 4:45Speaker 1: on it.
- 4:46Speaker 3: It's working.
- 4:47Speaker 2: They don't know what's causing it, and I think they're
- 4:49Speaker 2: trying to figure it out without ripping through things. And
- 4:52Speaker 2: I really hope it doesn't come to that because that
- 4:54Speaker 2: would be a big inconvenience.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, for you and for a lot of other people. Yeah,
- 5:00Speaker 1: why people still have to hear it in the other apartments, Right.
- 5:02Speaker 3: It's not that loud.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I'm describing it like it's some some horror movies.
- 5:08Speaker 1: So I've seen from Psycho or something.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Yeah, we could have a conversation over it right now
- 5:15Speaker 2: if we had to.
- 5:15Speaker 3: It's not it's not deafening.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Apparently loud enough to have a fellow tenant's logic complain
- 5:22Speaker 1: against you.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Apparently Apparently it's not personal, is what it fixed.
- 5:29Speaker 1: They don't want they don't want the screeching going.
- 5:32Speaker 2: They don't want to know exactly exactly what I'm turning
- 5:34Speaker 2: the water on.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Right exactly, all right? The things on the program this
- 5:40Speaker 1: afternoon that will uh, that we will undertake to discuss one. Obviously,
- 5:46Speaker 1: the Open Championship. They are kind of headed down the
- 5:50Speaker 1: home stretch of the first take. You know, the Open
- 5:53Speaker 1: is always one of those words difficult to figure unless
- 5:56Speaker 1: they just lay it all out in front of you
- 5:57Speaker 1: exactly all the times and who's playing, win and all
- 5:59Speaker 1: that kind of stuff about when they're going to get done.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Because it's six hours later there than it is here.
- 6:08Speaker 1: There is Royal Birkdale, which is just to the north
- 6:14Speaker 1: of Liverpool in the west I believe of Manchester near
- 6:18Speaker 1: the Irish coast, the Irish Sea, the coast with the
- 6:22Speaker 1: Irish Sea, and so it's six hours after this. So
- 6:26Speaker 1: that's why I said. They started I think around three
- 6:29Speaker 1: o'clock this morning Texas time, maybe even prior to that,
- 6:33Speaker 1: and they've been going all day. Scotti. Scheffler's already done
- 6:37Speaker 1: with his round. We'll tell you about that coming up.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Most other ones, including the tournament's leader in the clubhouse
- 6:43Speaker 1: right now, already in the clubhouse. They're done. But there
- 6:47Speaker 1: are still golfers on the course, and there are still
- 6:50Speaker 1: golfers with a chance to get close to, if not
- 6:52Speaker 1: get to the top of the leaderboard. So it's now
- 6:58Speaker 1: what is it eight eight pm? Greenwich mean time there
- 7:05Speaker 1: in uh in England, so it's after eight o'clock in
- 7:09Speaker 1: the evening. Of course, you know in that northern hemisphere
- 7:13Speaker 1: the sun is out a great deal longer.
- 7:16Speaker 3: I know that from experience.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, what in North Dakota you had that right, We.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Had nine to thirty pm sunsets around this time of year.
- 7:23Speaker 2: What I loved out there, Wow, it really was something.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah. When Linda and I were driving UH east, you
- 7:31Speaker 1: know we got into uh western North Carolina, which was
- 7:38Speaker 1: at the western edge or eastern Tennessee excuse me, which
- 7:43Speaker 1: was at the western the far eastern edge of the
- 7:48Speaker 1: of the central time zone. Yeah, and then when you
- 7:52Speaker 1: crossed between Nashville and Knoxville, you crossed in the eastern
- 7:58Speaker 1: time In fact, my broadcast partner on Long Rornd basketball,
- 8:02Speaker 1: Eddie Orn, grew up in Harriman, Tennessee, which is like
- 8:07Speaker 1: seven miles from the time zone line. He grew up
- 8:13Speaker 1: like seven miles, so he said, they used to try
- 8:14Speaker 1: to play that to their advantage, you know, if they
- 8:17Speaker 1: were when they were teenagers and then when they're out
- 8:20Speaker 1: at home. I thought it was I thought it was
- 8:22Speaker 1: only eight o'clock. Now that was in the Eastern times
- 8:24Speaker 1: and it was an after nine and you know that
- 8:26Speaker 1: sort of thing. But when we drove back there and
- 8:31Speaker 1: you got into the far western edge of the Eastern
- 8:35Speaker 1: time zone between Knoxville and Nashville, that sun it was
- 8:40Speaker 1: still daylight. At nine thirty it was it was still daylight.
- 8:43Speaker 1: It eventually it was the sun hit set. It wasn't
- 8:46Speaker 1: like what you said where you actually had nine to
- 8:48Speaker 1: thirty PM sunsets. And it's kind of like that in England.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I'm always reminded of that when when the British Open
- 8:56Speaker 1: comes around, when the Open Championship is played, UH University
- 9:01Speaker 1: of Texas graduate and there there are several who are playing,
- 9:06Speaker 1: including Scottie Scheffler, Pierson Coodie, by the way, had a
- 9:08Speaker 1: very good day and again, well we'll run down a
- 9:10Speaker 1: leaderboard coming up. But when Justin Leonard, who played at
- 9:16Speaker 1: Texas uh uh played there in the early nineties, I
- 9:23Speaker 1: guess it was uh. He then when he hit the tour,
- 9:29Speaker 1: you know, had that fast start news tour and he
- 9:33Speaker 1: won the Open Championship at Royal Troon I believe it
- 9:36Speaker 1: was nineteen ninety seven, and he always tells the story
- 9:41Speaker 1: about when he was done with his round, and when
- 9:45Speaker 1: he was done with a pomp and the circumstance and
- 9:48Speaker 1: the uh and the ceremony and the claret jug and
- 9:53Speaker 1: getting the medal for being the champion golfer of the year,
- 9:56Speaker 1: as they say over there, and all of that kind
- 9:58Speaker 1: of stuff, and this press conference and all that thing.
- 10:02Speaker 1: All when those things happened. After that, he was back
- 10:07Speaker 1: in the clubhouse and showered and changed clothes and all
- 10:11Speaker 1: this sort of stuff, and he was meeting up with
- 10:13Speaker 1: his teacher, Randy Smith, who of course was the teacher
- 10:17Speaker 1: of Scotti Schffler and other Longhorns as well, and the
- 10:25Speaker 1: two of them, he said, always maybe the best moment
- 10:29Speaker 1: of the entire weekend, you know, right alongside knocking in
- 10:35Speaker 1: the winning putt and all of that sort of stuff
- 10:38Speaker 1: and raising the claret jug, the best time of the
- 10:41Speaker 1: weekend for him was to walk out right as sunset
- 10:47Speaker 1: happened around between the nine thirty ten o'clock at night,
- 10:51Speaker 1: everybody was gone, and he and Randy Smith and the
- 10:55Speaker 1: claret jug went out just beyond where the eighteenth Green was,
- 11:00Speaker 1: the pets and a couple of beers and sat down
- 11:03Speaker 1: and let it all so get that was a really
- 11:07Speaker 1: cool image to think about. There. You know, he's sitting
- 11:09Speaker 1: out there, he's having a pizza, he's having as he's
- 11:12Speaker 1: having a pint, and there's the clart jug with him
- 11:15Speaker 1: as well, because he's won the Open Championship, and of
- 11:18Speaker 1: course Scotti Scheffler, you know, being a defending champion, he's
- 11:23Speaker 1: he's had that great experience of that. So he's in
- 11:26Speaker 1: the he's in the fight, but he is not leading.
- 11:29Speaker 1: But we'll tell you who is, and we'll tell you
- 11:33Speaker 1: about the golfers who are still on the course as
- 11:35Speaker 1: they get toward the end of their rounds. We'll do that.
- 11:39Speaker 1: As always, we invite your input and happily welcome that,
- 11:45Speaker 1: your questions, your thoughts, your comments. And it didn't obviously
- 11:48Speaker 1: just have to be about the Open Championship. We've got
- 11:50Speaker 1: other things we're going to get to and we'll talk
- 11:52Speaker 1: some college footballers, some major League baseball. There's a couple
- 11:54Speaker 1: of crazy stories to get to, which of course reminds
- 11:57Speaker 1: me to you that will have inconceivable coming up later
- 12:02Speaker 1: on this hour. So we got a lot of things
- 12:05Speaker 1: to get to. But if you would like to contribute,
- 12:07Speaker 1: if you if you have a question, a thought, comment,
- 12:11Speaker 1: any kind of a topic that's on your mind and
- 12:15Speaker 1: you would like to put it out there for us
- 12:17Speaker 1: to consider and perhaps comment on, you have a couple
- 12:20Speaker 1: of ways to do that. You can reach us via
- 12:24Speaker 1: the text line. All you have to do is text
- 12:25Speaker 1: the word Texas follow by your question or comment to
- 12:29Speaker 1: eight one five three zero. So the word Texas and
- 12:34Speaker 1: then your question or comment. You text that to eight
- 12:37Speaker 1: one five three zero. Standard messaging and data RaSE may apply.
- 12:41Speaker 1: And then the other way, or you can actually physically
- 12:46Speaker 1: have your voice heard on the air, is to access
- 12:50Speaker 1: us via the talkback microphone or talkback feature off the
- 12:53Speaker 1: iHeart Radio app. All you do is, if you haven't
- 12:56Speaker 1: already downloaded the iHeart Radio app, really easy to do.
- 13:00Speaker 1: That's how you can listen to us wherever in the
- 13:03Speaker 1: free world you care to listen to us. You download it.
- 13:07Speaker 1: It's it's easy. It's also free and cost anything. You
- 13:10Speaker 1: just download the iHeart Radio app on your smartphone be
- 13:15Speaker 1: it whatever, iPhone, Android, whatever it is. You download the
- 13:19Speaker 1: iHeart Radio app. A little red heart comes up. Then
- 13:23Speaker 1: you pop that on when you download it, and you'll
- 13:26Speaker 1: get a search bar like you do on a lot
- 13:28Speaker 1: of apps, and in your little search window or magnifying
- 13:32Speaker 1: glass or search bar, you type in AM thirteen hundred
- 13:35Speaker 1: the zone. You just type that in your search window,
- 13:38Speaker 1: it'll pop straight up. And then there's two buttons there.
- 13:41Speaker 1: There's a white button kind of in a triangular shape
- 13:44Speaker 1: and arrowhead shape. You would punch that if you just
- 13:48Speaker 1: want to listen what's going on the air. There's another button.
- 13:51Speaker 1: It's a red one with a little white microphone in it.
- 13:53Speaker 1: You press that button and that activates the talk aback microphone,
- 13:58Speaker 1: and then you can leave us a message of the
- 14:00Speaker 1: thirty seconds you say, hey, I was this wonder you
- 14:02Speaker 1: know about this Open championship blah blah blah, or if
- 14:07Speaker 1: you've had a question about the Longhorns in whatever sport
- 14:09Speaker 1: or college football or Major League baseball, whatever is on
- 14:12Speaker 1: your mind, You've got thirty seconds to do it on
- 14:14Speaker 1: the talkback feature. So again, you download the iHeart Radio app,
- 14:18Speaker 1: and then after you download the iHeart Radio app, you
- 14:20Speaker 1: search AM thirteen under the zone. It'll pop up. Then
- 14:25Speaker 1: you click the red button with the white microphone, and
- 14:29Speaker 1: you have thirty seconds to leave us a message, a
- 14:31Speaker 1: question or comment, whatever that might be. So this a
- 14:33Speaker 1: couple of ways to reach us during the course of
- 14:35Speaker 1: the day. All right, coming up, we'll run you down
- 14:40Speaker 1: the Open Championship leader board, tell you what's going on.
- 14:42Speaker 1: We'll get to a lot of other things as well.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Here on a Thursday afternoon on sports Radio AM thirteen
- 14:47Speaker 1: under the Zone, and where you can always listen to
- 14:49Speaker 1: us for free on the iHeart Radio app here on
- 14:56Speaker 1: Thursday on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone. Any
- 15:03Speaker 1: particular reason for Norwegian Wood.
- 15:06Speaker 2: You mentioned the proximity to Liverpool of the Open this
- 15:10Speaker 2: weekend got me thinking about the Beatles, and I don't know,
- 15:13Speaker 2: maybe Earling Holland's still on the mind in that World Cup.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and Norway its deepest run ever. We sse
- 15:21Speaker 1: you know what the song is about, don't you.
- 15:24Speaker 3: It's about the No well you tell me because I
- 15:28Speaker 3: thought I knew.
- 15:29Speaker 1: But it's about a nightstand and it's kind of rooted
- 15:35Speaker 1: in truth. John Lennon was being interviewed by a reporter
- 15:40Speaker 1: and she was I can't remember what publication, and he
- 15:43Speaker 1: wound up staying the night with her and she had
- 15:46Speaker 1: all this Norwegian Wood furniture and he.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Talked until too then she said it's.
- 15:52Speaker 1: He ended up sleeping in the bathroom. He said, isn't
- 15:54Speaker 1: they in the in the tub or whatever?
- 15:57Speaker 3: But so I looked around I noticed there wasn't Yeah,
- 16:00Speaker 3: just a lot of all.
- 16:01Speaker 1: This mod Norwegian wood furniture. So he sat on a
- 16:06Speaker 1: rug biting his time, drinking or wine, you know that
- 16:08Speaker 1: kind of thing. So anyway, that's what that's all about. Okay,
- 16:12Speaker 1: So maybe we are on the subject of Europe and
- 16:16Speaker 1: the Open Championship is going on at Royal Birkdale. They
- 16:21Speaker 1: are on the home stretch of the first round. There
- 16:24Speaker 1: are several big names still on the golf course, including
- 16:29Speaker 1: Rory McElroy, who just hit a shot out of a
- 16:32Speaker 1: bunker on his knees to get it within relative makeable
- 16:40Speaker 1: par range. For him. He has had an up and
- 16:43Speaker 1: down round. I think he's plus two playing number seventeen,
- 16:46Speaker 1: I believe right now, something like that.
- 16:48Speaker 2: But do they call it getting up and down when
- 16:50Speaker 2: you take the bunker shot from your knees.
- 16:52Speaker 1: That's true, it's down up down. Maybe perhaps I don't know.
- 16:56Speaker 1: The leader in the Championship in the first round is
- 17:00Speaker 1: Jackson super He's an American. He's an old miss product,
- 17:05Speaker 1: isn't he. Yes, So he shot a five under round
- 17:10Speaker 1: of sixty five. It's a par seventy and that included
- 17:15Speaker 1: getting an eagle at the par five seventeenth. He got
- 17:18Speaker 1: an eagle three off of.
- 17:20Speaker 2: That seventh player all time to start an Open championship
- 17:25Speaker 2: at Royal Birkdale with a sixty five or lower. It's
- 17:29Speaker 2: the second best opening round there sixty four for Craig
- 17:33Speaker 2: Stadler Lawaalris round one in nineteen eighty three. Maybe that's
- 17:38Speaker 2: our next Beatles bump back. And of course Stadler won
- 17:42Speaker 2: the Masters in eighty two. For there that would wind
- 17:46Speaker 2: up being his only I believe his only major championship
- 17:48Speaker 2: was at Masters in eighty two, but he was an
- 17:51Speaker 2: outstanding golfer for many years on the tour. But at
- 17:57Speaker 2: five under par sixty five, that's the lead right now,
- 18:01Speaker 2: and it looks like that's going to stand up as
- 18:05Speaker 2: they get down the home stretch. There are golfers on
- 18:08Speaker 2: the course who are under par, but I'm not certain
- 18:12Speaker 2: that they're going to have a shot to get to
- 18:13Speaker 2: minus five before the day is done. So in all probability,
- 18:20Speaker 2: Jackson supers five under round of sixty five is going
- 18:24Speaker 2: to stand up, is enough to take the lead after
- 18:28Speaker 2: the first round he made two birdies on the front
- 18:33Speaker 2: side and he had two bogies on the front side
- 18:39Speaker 2: as well, and then on the backside he birdied twelve,
- 18:43Speaker 2: bogie thirteen, birdied fourteen, birdied sixteen, eagles seventeen and part eighteen.
- 18:50Speaker 1: So he did a good job. By the way, Roy
- 18:52Speaker 1: McRoy was able to tap in for parr after hitting
- 18:55Speaker 1: a shot on his knees to get out of the bunker.
- 18:57Speaker 2: No, that was a bogey, Craig, Oh, did he missed. Yeah,
- 19:00Speaker 2: he missed about about a nine footer.
- 19:03Speaker 1: I turned just in time to see him walking up
- 19:05Speaker 1: and you know what, He's missed several putts like that today.
- 19:08Speaker 1: That's why it's been a struggle for him. So now
- 19:10Speaker 1: he's at plus three, you know, obviously not out of
- 19:14Speaker 1: the championship yet, but that puts him eight shots out
- 19:16Speaker 1: of the lead at the moment. So Jackson super is
- 19:19Speaker 1: the leader at minus five at four under par sunga
- 19:25Speaker 1: m from South Korea who shot a four in around
- 19:29Speaker 1: of sixty six and Daniel Brown. You know, yesterday when
- 19:32Speaker 1: we had Cameron Parker here, we were musing over the
- 19:36Speaker 1: last time an Englishman won the Open Championship, and then
- 19:41Speaker 1: did we settle on, Sir Nick Faldo, Sir Nick Faldough,
- 19:44Speaker 1: I believe in ninety two, ninety two or ninety three,
- 19:48Speaker 1: I don't know. It goes back, Yeah, it's it's back. Yeah.
- 19:52Speaker 1: I think he may be right. It might be ninety two.
- 19:54Speaker 3: So yeah, it was ninety two is the last time?
- 19:57Speaker 1: Wow? So but here is an Englishman and Daniel Brown
- 20:02Speaker 1: who shot a four in a round of sixty six
- 20:04Speaker 1: as well at minus three at three hundred sixty seven.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Thomas Detree from Germany. Robert McIntyre was a guy we
- 20:13Speaker 1: didn't talk about, and he's been in the running in
- 20:15Speaker 1: some major championships. He's not from England, he's from Scotland,
- 20:19Speaker 1: but he's from Great Britain, so he's minus three. Francesco
- 20:24Speaker 1: Molinari of Italy's at three hunder par as is Alex Smalley, American,
- 20:31Speaker 1: Ryan Gerard an American MJ And it's pronounced duffy, but
- 20:37Speaker 1: it's spelled daff ue and it's pronounced duffy. He's from
- 20:45Speaker 1: South Africa, but he played his college golf at Lamar,
- 20:50Speaker 1: at Lamar University. That's where he played. Put a smile
- 20:54Speaker 1: on my wife Linda's face. That's where she got her masters.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Was there in in in at Lamar University. So anyway,
- 21:08Speaker 1: m J. Duffy minus three. Then you have Cameron Young,
- 21:15Speaker 1: you have Pearson Coody, the Texas Longhorn.
- 21:19Speaker 3: You know, we.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Talked about Justin Leonard winning a major obviously Scottie Scheffler
- 21:24Speaker 1: Jordan speak. But here's Pierson Coody Young, touring pro former Longhorn,
- 21:30Speaker 1: and he shot minus three as well, and one other
- 21:32Speaker 1: guy shot three under bryceon de Shambo. De Shambo shot
- 21:39Speaker 1: minus three. Now, yesterday on the program, we were talking
- 21:43Speaker 1: about the fact that Deshambo was in a weird spot
- 21:50Speaker 1: in that if he failed to make the cut, he
- 21:56Speaker 1: would be the first golfer in at least it's thought
- 22:03Speaker 1: to be the first man in pro golf history to
- 22:07Speaker 1: have multiple majors and missed the cut in all four
- 22:11Speaker 1: majors of a single year. He has already missed the
- 22:14Speaker 1: cut in the Masters, the US Open, in the PGA,
- 22:18Speaker 1: He's already missed the cut on all three. But he
- 22:20Speaker 1: shot three hundred sixty seven. Now we're gonna hear from
- 22:26Speaker 1: from him, but we're gonna we're gonna hear first of all,
- 22:32Speaker 1: Sir Nick Fallow. We were just talking about him the
- 22:33Speaker 1: last Englishman to win in ninety two, and of course Fallow,
- 22:39Speaker 1: who had won back to back majors with the US Open,
- 22:43Speaker 1: had done that as well. You know, highly decorated golfer.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Sir Nick Faldo that is and for years a golf
- 22:54Speaker 1: commentator on CBS. He's retired from that, but he's still
- 22:56Speaker 1: working what's it called the Sky Sports?
- 22:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I believe he's What's sports?
- 23:00Speaker 1: Okay. So Foudl was asked about the Shambo who who
- 23:09Speaker 1: apparently attacked the golf course in this championship with having
- 23:15Speaker 1: it without having a real big strategic plan, and so
- 23:19Speaker 1: Sir Nick was asked about this and was commenting on
- 23:21Speaker 1: Bryce and to Shambo going into Royal Burkedale without a
- 23:25Speaker 1: real pronounced plan of attack.
- 23:28Speaker 4: That's a whole part of the story. How they're superstars
- 23:32Speaker 4: that live, then come over and can't do it, so
- 23:34Speaker 4: that's that's all another story and then go back to
- 23:36Speaker 4: be superstars. He has I'd say it to his face,
- 23:41Speaker 4: it has zero clue as strategy. I mean, you've done
- 23:46Speaker 4: he said it last year and I think on TV
- 23:48Speaker 4: I'm going to go out and attack the links. Well
- 23:50Speaker 4: I've never attacked a links. You thread it, don't you?
- 23:54Speaker 4: You feed it down the ferry. It's really important. You
- 23:56Speaker 4: look at humps and bumps and what everything. If I
- 23:58Speaker 4: send it over and feed nudge's back into play, you
- 24:01Speaker 4: don't think we just boom it down there can't see
- 24:03Speaker 4: where I'm going.
- 24:04Speaker 1: It's twenty yards wide. Oh yeah, good luck.
- 24:06Speaker 4: I mean on all this, even if you're fantastic, it
- 24:09Speaker 4: lands on a corner of a divot, you still miss
- 24:11Speaker 4: the fairly. So you've got to think, how do I get.
- 24:13Speaker 1: It on the shore glass? It is so important?
- 24:15Speaker 4: And here stand up and just keep bomming away and
- 24:17Speaker 4: they think, oh, they go, you get it further down.
- 24:21Speaker 4: But you can be completely blocked out on a link.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Father a little bit flummock stuff.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Never attacked a link.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Yeah. So anyway, we'll hear from Bryson to Shambo later
- 24:38Speaker 1: about this and about the quote unquote lack of strategy
- 24:44Speaker 1: as it were. But again Jackson supers minus five, TUNJM
- 24:51Speaker 1: four under Daniel Brown, four under Thomas Detrie, Robert McIntyre,
- 24:56Speaker 1: Francesca Molinari, Alex Smalley, Bryce and Shambo, Ryan and Gerard M. J.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Duffy Pearson Coody and Cameron Young all at three under.
- 25:05Speaker 1: They all shot sixty seven.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Young's looking at a long par putt right now on eighteen,
- 25:10Speaker 2: trying to stay at three hunder eighteen. It's been a
- 25:12Speaker 2: really tough hole. Like you and Cameron talked about five
- 25:15Speaker 2: hundred yard par four. Oh and he sank it from
- 25:18Speaker 2: about twenty feet away. So to Cameron Young does stay
- 25:21Speaker 2: at three under.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Okay, So big big putt for par. There for Cam
- 25:25Speaker 1: Young to remain at minus three for the championship and
- 25:29Speaker 1: only two shots off the lead of minus five from
- 25:37Speaker 1: Jackson super Sonic Pott to finish it at minus three, okay,
- 25:43Speaker 1: and then at two under. You have these golfers, Hendrik
- 25:48Speaker 1: Stenson of Sweden, Jordan Smith, an Englishman, Victor Perez of Franz,
- 25:56Speaker 1: Jokim Lagergren of Sweden, Rio Hissatune from Japan, Sewu Kim
- 26:05Speaker 1: from South Korea, Nick Taylor from Canada, sept Straka also
- 26:12Speaker 1: Bud Cowley in American Colin Morikawa had it to minus four,
- 26:18Speaker 1: gave back two shots on the back round back to
- 26:20Speaker 1: minus two, So too did Scotty Scheffler. Scheffler had it
- 26:24Speaker 1: to minus four, gave back a couple of shots and
- 26:29Speaker 1: wound up at minus two. So he's three off the
- 26:32Speaker 1: lead right now, is Scheffler. So Scotty was asked about
- 26:38Speaker 1: his round today and was asked and Scheffler had been
- 26:46Speaker 1: kind of, you know, nah, kind of ho hum about
- 26:51Speaker 1: about the way his game was going and things like
- 26:54Speaker 1: that of late. But he was asked about his round
- 26:59Speaker 1: of golf and actually what he felt good about, and
- 27:03Speaker 1: you know, overall, you know what, we're not only what
- 27:06Speaker 1: worked well, but also what did not work. Later in
- 27:10Speaker 1: the round, I.
- 27:11Speaker 5: Felt like I played, you know, a lot better than
- 27:13Speaker 5: my squore day. I still get a ton out of it.
- 27:14Speaker 5: I felt like, you know, I didn't hit many shots offline.
- 27:17Speaker 5: You know, I hit a decent wedge on the seventh
- 27:20Speaker 5: and ended up making bogie win kind of switched on me.
- 27:22Speaker 5: And then like I may missed my first fairway at
- 27:25Speaker 5: the tenth, end up in a pop bunker, and then
- 27:26Speaker 5: hit another one off line there on seventeen and ended
- 27:28Speaker 5: up in a really tough spot. So every time I
- 27:30Speaker 5: had off line and I felt like I was chipping out,
- 27:32Speaker 5: and I didn't hold as many putts as I would
- 27:34Speaker 5: have hoped to, And you know, I didn't take advantage
- 27:36Speaker 5: of the part fives later in the day. So I mean, overall,
- 27:38Speaker 5: I felt like I did a lot of good stuff.
- 27:40Speaker 5: Just a matter of continue to do that over the
- 27:41Speaker 5: course of the week.
- 27:42Speaker 1: And I think I'll be in a good spot.
- 27:43Speaker 5: Man.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Okay, all right, we'll hear more from Scotty coming up
- 27:45Speaker 1: a little bit later on. Also some other interesting side
- 27:51Speaker 1: notes on the Open Championship. We'll do that as well
- 27:53Speaker 1: a little bit later. But up next, we bring you
- 27:56Speaker 1: Inconceivable here on a Thursday afternoon on sports Radio AM
- 27:59Speaker 1: thirteen and the Zone of the iHeartRadio app second hour
- 28:31Speaker 1: of the programs here on Sports Radio A. I'm thirteen
- 28:34Speaker 1: under the Zone here on a Thursday afternoon, Craig Way
- 28:37Speaker 1: alongside I'm producer Jay Carmon. Glad to have you with us.
- 28:41Speaker 1: We have kept you updated on the leaderboard of the
- 28:46Speaker 1: first round of the Open champions I'm going to get
- 28:47Speaker 1: to that in a moment. And it's not completely finished,
- 28:52Speaker 1: but it's all but finished. And anybody who has a
- 28:56Speaker 1: shot to be very close to the top of the
- 28:58Speaker 1: leaderboard is done. They're already done. There are some guys
- 29:03Speaker 1: still out on the golf course, most of whom are
- 29:08Speaker 1: in the black numbers well over par. In fact, there's
- 29:11Speaker 1: one guy out there who is. It's Austin Truslow, an American.
- 29:16Speaker 1: He's plus seven with two holes to go in his round.
- 29:19Speaker 1: But most everybody else that's within even moderate striking range
- 29:27Speaker 1: of the upper rationale of the leader board has already
- 29:29Speaker 1: finished their round to day, because it is, after all,
- 29:31Speaker 1: just after nine o'clock nine pm Greenwich meantime there in England.
- 29:39Speaker 1: So we'll update that at a moment. Also, we'll have
- 29:45Speaker 1: some pro football notes coming up, and I will put
- 29:49Speaker 1: this question to Jake because he apparently tackled this subject
- 29:54Speaker 1: in a similar fashion while I was out. And it's
- 29:56Speaker 1: the importance of the games on the Texas long run
- 30:00Speaker 1: football schedule, So we'll get to that coming up. And
- 30:05Speaker 1: as I mentioned, as always, we're certainly happy to entertain
- 30:13Speaker 1: your thoughts, your questions, your comments, and a couple of
- 30:16Speaker 1: different ways to do that. One and I'll just say
- 30:21Speaker 1: it in reverse order right now, and that is to
- 30:25Speaker 1: reach us via the talkback feature our talkback microphone at
- 30:31Speaker 1: on the iHeart. Well, you can reach us on the
- 30:34Speaker 1: talkback microphone by accessing us on the iHeartRadio app. So
- 30:38Speaker 1: what you do is you do the iHeart radio app.
- 30:40Speaker 1: You download that. It's really easy to do free as
- 30:43Speaker 1: well if you haven't done it. And then you do
- 30:47Speaker 1: a search under AM thirteen hundred the zone. It will
- 30:51Speaker 1: pop right up. And when it pops up, then you
- 30:57Speaker 1: simply push the little red button with the white microphone
- 31:00Speaker 1: on it. You do that and it will open up
- 31:04Speaker 1: the microphone for you. Well, and then you can leave
- 31:06Speaker 1: us a voice message of up to thirty seconds, and
- 31:08Speaker 1: I'll go be on thirty it'll cut you off, but
- 31:10Speaker 1: you can do it certainly within thirty seconds and leave
- 31:14Speaker 1: us a message. That's one way to do it, and
- 31:17Speaker 1: the other way to do it. You can reach us
- 31:20Speaker 1: by just leaving us a text. Many of you like
- 31:24Speaker 1: to do that. You text us on the text line,
- 31:27Speaker 1: so feel free to do that. One other thing that
- 31:29Speaker 1: I wanted to do. What you do is you text
- 31:31Speaker 1: the word texas followed by your question or comment to
- 31:36Speaker 1: eight one five three zero. So you text the word
- 31:38Speaker 1: texas followed by your question or comment to eight one
- 31:41Speaker 1: five three zero. Standard messaging in data rates may apply.
- 31:47Speaker 1: The other thing that I was going to mention and
- 31:50Speaker 1: I didn't get a chance to get to it during
- 31:55Speaker 1: are inconceivable, but it's it's worth mentioning, and it's something
- 32:01Speaker 1: our friend Chris Bennett CB on Twitter to yesterday he
- 32:06Speaker 1: let us know about the empty Super Mario sixty four
- 32:10Speaker 1: video game box selling for over ten thousand dollars at auction.
- 32:15Speaker 1: There was that. But CB, who of course is a
- 32:21Speaker 1: Greater Austin Area native and attended what was at the
- 32:27Speaker 1: time known as Lanier High School it's now Navarro Early College.
- 32:31Speaker 1: But he lives now in the Pacific Northwest, and so
- 32:35Speaker 1: sometimes he'll gain access to some things that some story,
- 32:43Speaker 1: some ideas that we haven't heard down here, like this
- 32:46Speaker 1: one where he said, because the second half, the figurative
- 32:51Speaker 1: second half of the Major League Baseball season begins tonight
- 32:57Speaker 1: weather permitting, right with with the Mets and Phillies, wildfire
- 33:01Speaker 1: smoke permitting. And that's is that emanating from Canada? Is
- 33:07Speaker 1: that what it is?
- 33:08Speaker 2: It is it's been it's really bad in Wisconsin and Michigan.
- 33:12Speaker 1: But in Minnesota too.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's spreading those you know, south east towards
- 33:17Speaker 2: the mid Atlantic.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Okay, uh, they are supposed to play tonight and that
- 33:20Speaker 1: would be the one game on the Big League. Say,
- 33:22Speaker 1: if there's only one game, does somebody have an exclusive
- 33:27Speaker 1: telecast right on that? Okay, Okay, yeah, because they've been
- 33:30Speaker 1: doing Thursday night games. Okay, So the figurative second half
- 33:36Speaker 1: of the baseball season begins tonight, but most everybody else
- 33:40Speaker 1: begins the figurative second half tomorrow, including the Seattle Mariners. Well,
- 33:45Speaker 1: the Mariners trying out something different. And when it comes
- 33:52Speaker 1: to concessions. Now, when we always read about the concession
- 33:56Speaker 1: items that are coming up at the start of a
- 34:00Speaker 1: baseball season, you know, gigantic hot dogs or hamburgers, or
- 34:06Speaker 1: huge Sundays, ice cream Sundays, or pizzas or things like that.
- 34:10Speaker 1: But that's almost all I think in the first half
- 34:15Speaker 1: or starting off a season. Well, now the Mariners have
- 34:20Speaker 1: announced over a dozen new menu items coming to Tea
- 34:24Speaker 1: Mobile Park and it's going to start tomorrow. Their vice
- 34:30Speaker 1: president a fan Experience, Malcolm Rogel, said, our fans have
- 34:35Speaker 1: come to expect a unique and diverse food experience at
- 34:39Speaker 1: Team Mobile Park, and we're excited to continue building on
- 34:42Speaker 1: that tradition. These new editions bring even more variety to
- 34:45Speaker 1: the menu and create new opportunities for fans to discover
- 34:48Speaker 1: their next ballpark favorite. First things about the food there
- 34:52Speaker 1: really okay. The new options will be in addition to
- 34:56Speaker 1: the so many other items that they introduced to the
- 34:59Speaker 1: start of the season. But here's that's what's coming. They
- 35:02Speaker 1: have something called the El Rinconcito, which is the t
- 35:07Speaker 1: mobile pin Casa Trompo with crispy corn tortillas, a couple
- 35:13Speaker 1: of them, marinated pork, grilled pineapple, pineapple salcea melted mozzarella cheese.
- 35:19Speaker 1: There's that, and then there's a chips and guac value
- 35:22Speaker 1: thing with tortilla chips with homemade guacamole. They have Ivars
- 35:27Speaker 1: in section one seventeen one thirty five. Ivars is offering
- 35:32Speaker 1: Copper River three piece salmon and chips. Oh you ever
- 35:36Speaker 1: had Copper River salmon? Well?
- 35:38Speaker 3: No, because of my fish allergies.
- 35:40Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I forget.
- 35:41Speaker 2: I'm working on it. The white fish is I'm working
- 35:43Speaker 2: it back into my diet. That's a whole other show,
- 35:46Speaker 2: a summer show, the Allergy Special.
- 35:48Speaker 1: This is one thing you're truly missing, a great taste,
- 35:51Speaker 1: and not what the mariners are doing. And I'll read
- 35:53Speaker 1: that in a moment.
- 35:55Speaker 2: But ivars you're talking about, there's one in Sam Marcus too.
- 36:00Speaker 3: This is the chain in Seattle.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, I don't think that's the same one. They
- 36:05Speaker 1: never know, Yeah, but they have the But if you've
- 36:08Speaker 1: ever had Copper River salmon before, and it's really only
- 36:11Speaker 1: available at a certain time of year, but if you
- 36:13Speaker 1: ever had it, it's great. Well anyway, they're offering at
- 36:16Speaker 1: the ballpark at Mariners games Copper River three piece salmon
- 36:21Speaker 1: and chips. It's crispy handcuf bread and filets of Copper
- 36:27Speaker 1: River salmon, a pair of the French fries, and the
- 36:30Speaker 1: signature Harder sauces there.
- 36:34Speaker 3: Most of these chips refer to, you know, English chips.
- 36:37Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. And you know, when I've had Copper River salmon,
- 36:41Speaker 1: I've had it like broiled, you know, not fried like
- 36:45Speaker 1: fried fish done wrong with fried fish. I like it,
- 36:48Speaker 1: but I hadn't had Copper River salmon that way.
- 36:50Speaker 3: They love a fish fry up in Wisconsin. I've got
- 36:52Speaker 3: my Woodchucks polo today.
- 36:54Speaker 1: There you go. They also have a bacon salmon sandwich
- 36:59Speaker 1: which is smokes like, is of bacon and fried copper
- 37:01Speaker 1: or salmon file ats top of coleslaw and ivers signature
- 37:06Speaker 1: tartar sauce served on a Brioche punt. They have something
- 37:10Speaker 1: in kid Valley, which is section three twenty five. A
- 37:13Speaker 1: Crispy Chicken bacon sandwich which is smoked bacon and crispy
- 37:17Speaker 1: chicken filets top with kid Valley fixings including lettuce, tomatoes, pickles,
- 37:26Speaker 1: Kid Valley spread, and pepper jack cheese served on a brioche.
- 37:29Speaker 3: Put Not enough stalls at the ballpark.
- 37:32Speaker 1: But see, they haven't had any reported cases up there.
- 37:35Speaker 3: Yeah, they're healthy in general.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Typosporiasis that hadn't been affected him yet.
- 37:42Speaker 3: They're eating a lot more fruits and vegetables up there.
- 37:44Speaker 1: True. In what's called rolling smoke section three thirteen, they
- 37:49Speaker 1: have peach glazed pork belly burnt ends.
- 37:53Speaker 3: See I'm in on that smoke.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Slow smoked pork belly dipped in a savory peach glaze.
- 38:00Speaker 1: I really like burn ins, I can tell you that.
- 38:01Speaker 1: And then they have what's called a peach outfield punch,
- 38:05Speaker 1: which is Now, this sounds like something that's pretty good.
- 38:07Speaker 1: You know, I think you could go for this house
- 38:09Speaker 1: brewed black tea with sweet peach nectar, fresh lemon juice,
- 38:13Speaker 1: and diced peaches.
- 38:14Speaker 3: That sounds great.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Game. Yeah, they have a thing called a Great State Burger. Yeah,
- 38:23Speaker 1: by the t mobile pen, which is a well. They
- 38:25Speaker 1: also have a Great State Corn Dog state Fair style,
- 38:33Speaker 1: but it's all natural chicken dipped in a honey corn
- 38:37Speaker 1: batter and fried to crispiness and served on its own
- 38:41Speaker 1: or with fries. So it's a corn dog, but instead
- 38:44Speaker 1: the hot dog being the center, it's chicken. So it's
- 38:47Speaker 1: corn the corn batter around chicken. I am. It's kind
- 38:52Speaker 1: of hard to get white of my mind, you know
- 38:55Speaker 1: about it not being a hot dog.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Why over complicate the chicken tender. It's like how milk
- 39:01Speaker 2: takes this taste the weirdest when you're expecting it to
- 39:03Speaker 2: be water.
- 39:05Speaker 1: They also offer Seattle Street Corn Capitol in section one
- 39:10Speaker 1: forty four, Capitol Hill corn, which is a miso, aoli ferry, cocky,
- 39:15Speaker 1: crispy pork belly, and green onion, and a Fremont Fire
- 39:19Speaker 1: corn which is hob an arrow, bacon, aoli, cottilla, cheese,
- 39:25Speaker 1: pickled onion.
- 39:26Speaker 3: And lies sounds like fire on the way in and fire.
- 39:29Speaker 1: The way Yeah. Yeah. They have something called the Natural,
- 39:32Speaker 1: which is a vegan item vegan peppercorn bacon, arugula, heirloom tomato,
- 39:41Speaker 1: a black truffle mayo, served in country style sour dough okay,
- 39:47Speaker 1: and then finally they have a thing called a Big
- 39:49Speaker 1: League Burger, which is a classic stack burger two four
- 39:54Speaker 1: ounce beef patties, so they would take you to a
- 39:56Speaker 1: half ounce half a pound burger with American cheese, the
- 40:00Speaker 1: burger sauce, pickles on a brioche bun, or a smoke
- 40:02Speaker 1: house stacked with again two four ounce beat patties, American cheese,
- 40:07Speaker 1: burger sauce or habanero bacon jam and brioche bun. So anyway,
- 40:13Speaker 1: those are like some new menu items. Thank you CB
- 40:17Speaker 1: for sending that to us. The Mariners thirteen new and
- 40:20Speaker 1: the difference on this, and what's difference is is that
- 40:27Speaker 1: it's mid season because most you know, major league teams
- 40:32Speaker 1: were for that matter, if you get in the football
- 40:34Speaker 1: season after kickoff at the start of a football season,
- 40:37Speaker 1: you know they have their new menu items for the year,
- 40:40Speaker 1: but they don't go about adding more at mid season
- 40:44Speaker 1: or changing them out. So apparently the Mariners have thirteen
- 40:48Speaker 1: new items that are just now coming into mid season
- 40:52Speaker 1: call it mid season acquisitions before the trade deadline, so
- 40:55Speaker 1: that the Mariners have a shot to win the American
- 40:57Speaker 1: League West, Yes, which is wide.
- 40:59Speaker 2: Open try and get to their first World Series in
- 41:01Speaker 2: franchise history, like Gino predicted for US before the season.
- 41:04Speaker 1: That's exactly right, so we'll see if that ultimately case.
- 41:08Speaker 1: On the text line, somebody said, you know, we always
- 41:09Speaker 1: went to Fish City Grill in the DFW area for
- 41:13Speaker 1: Copper River salmon. It usually ran June, July August. I
- 41:18Speaker 1: think that makes sense there, you know, so there's places
- 41:25Speaker 1: up there. So yeah, it's a good taste, it really is. Okay,
- 41:29Speaker 1: coming up, we'll update the Open Championship leader board. Everybody
- 41:34Speaker 1: should be done by the time we come back from
- 41:35Speaker 1: the break, and also we'll start to get into this
- 41:38Speaker 1: football conversation about the importance of certain games. You know,
- 41:42Speaker 1: is the old thing about how every game matters and
- 41:45Speaker 1: all that. In this day and age of college football,
- 41:47Speaker 1: some matter more than others. It's a very Orwellian thing.
- 41:51Speaker 1: You know. All games are created equal, but some games
- 41:54Speaker 1: are more equal than others. In the world of college football,
- 41:57Speaker 1: not all games are created equal, but get to the
- 42:00Speaker 1: importance of some of those. Coming up when we continue
- 42:02Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AU thirteen hundred zon any iHeartRadio appuld
- 42:15Speaker 1: you this Duty City nineteen sixty seven wound up. It
- 42:22Speaker 1: was released as single with them wound Up on the
- 42:24Speaker 1: Magical Mystery Tour album, which came out like Christmas sixty seven.
- 42:30Speaker 1: In the sixty I am a wares jake hitting that
- 42:33Speaker 1: because But the last time a guy opened with a
- 42:37Speaker 1: five hunder sixty five at Royal burt Dale in the
- 42:41Speaker 1: first round of the Open Championship was Craig Stadler, also
- 42:44Speaker 1: known as the Walrus, back in nineteen eighty.
- 42:46Speaker 3: Three, shot a sixty four sixty four and went into
- 42:52Speaker 3: the final round one shot behind Tom Watson, but wound
- 42:57Speaker 3: up shooting a seventy five on Sunday, finishing one.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Over and Watson I think won itch And that was
- 43:02Speaker 1: one of his five Open Championship was in nineteen eighty three. Craigstadler,
- 43:09Speaker 1: you know, like we said, otherwise known as the wal Rate.
- 43:12Speaker 3: Well, Craig, you didn't ask me what this song was about.
- 43:17Speaker 1: Well, you know what's funny because in there's a song
- 43:23Speaker 1: on the White album called glass Onion that John wrote
- 43:29Speaker 1: John Lennon wrote, and in it he said, here's another
- 43:32Speaker 1: clue for you all. The Walrus was Paul. However, later
- 43:39Speaker 1: the late Rick Nelson known as Ricky Nelson, back from
- 43:42Speaker 1: the TV show Ozzie and Harry Days. But then became
- 43:45Speaker 1: a teen idol and did Hello Mary Lou And then
- 43:48Speaker 1: so as he got older, he did a song called
- 43:50Speaker 1: Garden Party and it was about showing up at a
- 43:53Speaker 1: party in Hollywood or whether they had a lot of
- 43:56Speaker 1: people there. And he has a line in there he said,
- 43:57Speaker 1: Yoko brought her Walrus. Everything was swell or something like that.
- 44:02Speaker 1: So he identified John Lennon as being the Walrus. But
- 44:06Speaker 1: Lennon himself said no to the Walrus was Paul. So
- 44:09Speaker 1: he said, you heard about the Walrus and me, Man,
- 44:13Speaker 1: you know that we're as close as can be. Man, Well,
- 44:15Speaker 1: here's another clue for you. All the Wallers was Paul.
- 44:18Speaker 1: This is what he said. So anyway, more clues through
- 44:22Speaker 1: Beatles songs as well. All right, yeah, it is in
- 44:26Speaker 1: the books now. The first round of the Open Championship,
- 44:30Speaker 1: and as I mentioned, the leader is Jackson Suber shot
- 44:35Speaker 1: a five hunder round of sixty five. I was visiting
- 44:38Speaker 1: with Cameron Parker during during the break there, and he
- 44:41Speaker 1: told me that he said, Yees, Suber has been on
- 44:44Speaker 1: two or couple of years now. He had a like
- 44:47Speaker 1: a tie for fourth or a tie for sixth. He
- 44:50Speaker 1: had a tie for fourth I think of the John
- 44:51Speaker 1: Deere and a tie for six But he said this
- 44:53Speaker 1: is unexpected for him to be there. And as you
- 44:56Speaker 1: pointed out, he's rooming with former long worn Pierson Cootie
- 45:00Speaker 1: getting Coudie shot at three hundred sixty seven, but suber
- 45:03Speaker 1: is in the lead at five hundred sixty five. Soon
- 45:06Speaker 1: j m at minus four Daniel Brown at minus four
- 45:10Speaker 1: Daniel Brown. Interesting story about Daniel Brown Brown is you
- 45:19Speaker 1: might say he's from England and so you might say
- 45:23Speaker 1: he's a little bit of a throwback in that Daniel
- 45:29Speaker 1: Brown enjoys a smoke on the golf course. He doesn't
- 45:33Speaker 1: mind lighting one up. And so he had an exchange
- 45:37Speaker 1: with a reporter after his round about lighting one up
- 45:42Speaker 1: on the links and a bit of another question.
- 45:45Speaker 4: I believe you're partial to a cigarette when you're out
- 45:48Speaker 4: on the fairway. Given the conditions at the moments anybody
- 45:52Speaker 4: said anything to you, you're still allowed to have a
- 45:54Speaker 4: smoke while you're out there, or are you a.
- 45:55Speaker 6: Fire rice being told off the wispop and making sure
- 45:58Speaker 6: that they're.
- 46:00Speaker 1: Out when you stop out on right? Okay, so you
- 46:04Speaker 1: still you're still managed to.
- 46:06Speaker 3: Try the smoke, right, Okay, hopefully for the rest of eight.
- 46:11Speaker 6: It might be a big drop off by Sunday. If
- 46:13Speaker 6: I'm not allowed today probably sorry, mum. I'm probably on
- 46:20Speaker 6: like seven or eight around.
- 46:22Speaker 1: I would say seven or eight around. Well around was
- 46:26Speaker 1: four hours, so you know whatever, two per hour. I
- 46:30Speaker 1: guess that's not too bad. I don't know. It's just
- 46:33Speaker 1: we're our society now has become you know, very non
- 46:40Speaker 1: smoking encouraging, I guess is a way to describe it,
- 46:44Speaker 1: at least in terms of conventional tobacco.
- 46:46Speaker 2: It's less smoke or friendly for sure. Yeah, some people
- 46:49Speaker 2: have got the you know, the vapes.
- 46:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I know some people who are still kind
- 46:55Speaker 1: of vape a little bit. I will tell you this,
- 46:57Speaker 1: having returned from vacation, which was a driving vacation, which
- 47:03Speaker 1: meant driving from the mountains, inclusive of going through Tennessee
- 47:08Speaker 1: and driving to the mountains of North Carolina actually the
- 47:12Speaker 1: mountains of West Virginia down in through North Carolina and
- 47:15Speaker 1: in the South Carolina. And then when we drove back,
- 47:18Speaker 1: we drove back up to Asheville. So we're driving up
- 47:20Speaker 1: through eastern North Carolina to the sand hills. You see,
- 47:22Speaker 1: tobacco growing everywhere, big leafy plants. I mean, that's still
- 47:28Speaker 1: a big that's still a big product. That's something that
- 47:33Speaker 1: they produce there in the Carolinas. They're in the tobacco belt.
- 47:39Speaker 1: That's why you always hear things about Tobacco Road. You know,
- 47:42Speaker 1: basketball rivalry to Carolina Duke on Tobacco Road and all
- 47:46Speaker 1: this kind of stuff. Right around there, there's not too
- 47:48Speaker 1: much tobacco. I will say this. I grew up in Greensboro,
- 47:54Speaker 1: which was a insurance and textiles town still is. When
- 48:01Speaker 1: I was going up there, it had about one hundred
- 48:02Speaker 1: and sixty hundred eighty thousand people, I guess, and it's
- 48:05Speaker 1: I think a little over two hundred thousand. The metro
- 48:08Speaker 1: area with Winston Salem in a high point is in
- 48:10Speaker 1: excess of half a million now. But there's not much
- 48:15Speaker 1: agriculture media around. There's textile mills and then there's insurance.
- 48:21Speaker 1: But you venture outside, not far outside the city, and
- 48:24Speaker 1: you will come across tobacco. I can recall when I
- 48:27Speaker 1: was like sixteen or seventeen, during the summertime, a friend
- 48:32Speaker 1: of mine who had a car, and we got in
- 48:34Speaker 1: the car and we just went out. We're driving. We
- 48:37Speaker 1: used to just do that. We just drive and see
- 48:39Speaker 1: what's you go up to the Hanging Rock State Park
- 48:42Speaker 1: or go to Balues Creek Lake to do some swimming
- 48:45Speaker 1: or other, but you might just be driving down. And
- 48:47Speaker 1: so we were out and we pulled into a little
- 48:52Speaker 1: what we in this state would refer to as a
- 48:55Speaker 1: convenience store. Back then in North Carolina they were known
- 49:00Speaker 1: as curb markets. We call it a curb market basically
- 49:03Speaker 1: a convenience store. But it was like a you know,
- 49:06Speaker 1: not a chain, not like going to a seven eleven
- 49:08Speaker 1: or a circle k or anything like that. It was
- 49:11Speaker 1: just it was just, you know, a personal store, like
- 49:14Speaker 1: that little general store whatever. So we walk in and
- 49:18Speaker 1: there's a lady behind there, and we walk in and
- 49:19Speaker 1: we just you know, go to the soft drink box
- 49:23Speaker 1: and slide open the big old tray thing, the big
- 49:26Speaker 1: drink box, and then pull out a you know, a whatever,
- 49:29Speaker 1: a sixteen ounce bottle of soda and walk over there
- 49:31Speaker 1: and maybe a candy bar or something. And she's ringing
- 49:34Speaker 1: us up, and she hadn't seen this before, and she goes,
- 49:36Speaker 1: you boys in, Maggie, And I didn't know, I didn't understand.
- 49:40Speaker 1: Excuse me, you boys in Baggy and then Maggie see
- 49:43Speaker 1: in backy tobacco. Were we out working in the field
- 49:47Speaker 1: some tobacco. I was like, oh no, man, no, we're
- 49:49Speaker 1: just passing through. I'll never forget that you boys in backy.
- 49:55Speaker 1: So uh sounds Australian almost. Well, No, it was quite country.
- 49:59Speaker 1: Oh yeah it was. It was southern North Carolina quite country.
- 50:03Speaker 1: But Daniel Brown enjoys tobacco apparently a little bit, so
- 50:07Speaker 1: there's some of that. Bryson de Shamba was asked about
- 50:14Speaker 1: his round. He shot up three in around sixty seven.
- 50:16Speaker 1: I remember, this is a guy who who has missed
- 50:23Speaker 1: the cut in the first three majors, the Masters, the PGA,
- 50:27Speaker 1: in the US Open. If he misses the cut at
- 50:31Speaker 1: the Open Championship, he will become the first golfer in
- 50:34Speaker 1: modern history to win multiple majors and then miss the
- 50:40Speaker 1: cut in all four of the majors in a given year.
- 50:43Speaker 1: Doesn't look like he'll do it unless he just completely
- 50:45Speaker 1: implodes tomorrow. He shot up three in a round of
- 50:48Speaker 1: sixty seven and was asked for an evaluation of his
- 50:51Speaker 1: first round.
- 50:52Speaker 7: Yeah, it was a hard fought battle out there is
- 50:54Speaker 7: the wind was switching quite a bit, but It was
- 50:56Speaker 7: fun seeing a lot of the fans going at us
- 50:58Speaker 7: and they were rotten for all of us us, and
- 51:00Speaker 7: it was fun just seeing the ups and downs of
- 51:02Speaker 7: the group. And we all played pretty well, so it
- 51:05Speaker 7: was it was a lot of fun. And you know,
- 51:07Speaker 7: there's some just driving holes out there that I got
- 51:08Speaker 7: to work on. Other than that, Iron played it really
- 51:11Speaker 7: well and made some good putts and three putted once.
- 51:13Speaker 1: But that's life. Ah, that's life. But he did all
- 51:19Speaker 1: right three hundred sixty seven. So unless he just completely implodes,
- 51:25Speaker 1: I think he will make the cut in this he
- 51:28Speaker 1: made He made another comment there where he said hearing
- 51:30Speaker 1: them rooting for all of us. I heard one of
- 51:34Speaker 1: the golf commentators this morning watching the coverage mention, I
- 51:40Speaker 1: was talking about Wyndam Clark and Windam Clark, by the way,
- 51:42Speaker 1: struggled today.
- 51:44Speaker 3: Yeah when he finished three over, two over, I think
- 51:47Speaker 3: three right right next to Rory.
- 51:49Speaker 1: Yeah, so of course Clark the us of a champion.
- 51:56Speaker 1: And see Rory finished two over, Wyndham Clark three over
- 52:02Speaker 1: and Windham Clark three over. He struggled today, So did
- 52:05Speaker 1: Jordan Speed. He had a three over a round of
- 52:07Speaker 1: seventy three today and one of the golf commentators was
- 52:14Speaker 1: watching Wyndam Clark. This was earlier in the round before
- 52:16Speaker 1: he really encountered trouble. And and by the way, the
- 52:19Speaker 1: common thread of this first round of the Open, the
- 52:22Speaker 1: trouble was mainly on the back nine. Scotty Scheffler was
- 52:26Speaker 1: four under at one point, largely due to what he
- 52:28Speaker 1: was doing on the front night. Same thing with Calamaakama and.
- 52:31Speaker 2: Sun Jaiim, you know, bucked that trend. He was thirty
- 52:35Speaker 2: two coming in.
- 52:36Speaker 1: And he was one of the early ones to tee off,
- 52:40Speaker 1: I think before the winds kicked up quite a bit.
- 52:43Speaker 1: But the one of the golf commentators was talking about
- 52:49Speaker 1: Wyndam Clark and he actually said, Windam Clark playing here
- 52:58Speaker 1: at Royal Birkdale and it's not a road game for him.
- 53:03Speaker 1: If you remember when Clark was battling against Scotty Scheffler
- 53:08Speaker 1: and others, fans were clearly not rooting for Wyndham Clark
- 53:13Speaker 1: and he acknowledged it. You know it that it happened.
- 53:17Speaker 1: You know, he understands given some of the past and
- 53:21Speaker 1: the things like that, but as he said, not a
- 53:24Speaker 1: road game. Maybe he needed some people to root against him.
- 53:27Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe he might have done better than
- 53:29Speaker 1: shooting three over seventy three. Who knows. All Right, coming up, well,
- 53:33Speaker 1: we'll get to this college football topic I was talking
- 53:34Speaker 1: about next on thirteen under the Zone Thursday afternoon in
- 53:43Speaker 1: the sports radio in thirteen numbers on any O, little
- 53:46Speaker 1: CCR here on the return cut.
- 53:47Speaker 3: Yeah, a little nod to your road trip tails and
- 53:51Speaker 3: little nods, A little nod. So what's coming up around
- 53:55Speaker 3: the bank?
- 53:55Speaker 5: Come?
- 53:56Speaker 1: Uh, yeah, what's coming up next week? We'll be in
- 54:03Speaker 1: Tampa for the SEC Football Media Days. Will be there
- 54:06Speaker 1: Wednesday and Thursday, including when Texas is there on Thursday,
- 54:11Speaker 1: So we'll bring you programs from there, and we'll obviously
- 54:17Speaker 1: have conversation long more players. I'll have my annual media
- 54:22Speaker 1: Days conversation with head coach Steve Sarkisian. So we'll have
- 54:25Speaker 1: those things coming to you next week. So getting into
- 54:28Speaker 1: this football mindset, I talked about the you know, the
- 54:34Speaker 1: mile markers, the mile posts that you see that know
- 54:39Speaker 1: that let you know that football season is approaching. One
- 54:42Speaker 1: of those, obviously, is the annual publication of the magazines,
- 54:47Speaker 1: obviously Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. It is out. It
- 54:52Speaker 1: is on the news stands. I did check it is
- 54:57Speaker 1: also available at Barnes and Noble because I went there
- 55:03Speaker 1: to get another publication the other day and I saw
- 55:05Speaker 1: it there. I got to get my hands on that
- 55:08Speaker 1: it's there. And then athlon I picked this one up
- 55:14Speaker 1: when I was on vacation because I couldn't get access
- 55:18Speaker 1: to the other ones and I wanted some reading materials,
- 55:21Speaker 1: some college football preview reading material in advance. When I
- 55:24Speaker 1: was out there, you picked up Lindy's and I've gotten
- 55:28Speaker 1: that one before. And then what a lot of folks
- 55:32Speaker 1: do feel is the pre eminent preseason publication is Phil
- 55:37Speaker 1: Steele's College Football Annually. Now, I will tell you this,
- 55:41Speaker 1: the Phil Steel thing is, it's pretty heavy, and it's
- 55:45Speaker 1: pretty chock full. It's the priciest one. It's twenty five
- 55:49Speaker 1: bucks to get it. There's a lot of really good information.
- 55:52Speaker 1: But I will tell you this also, Phil Steele's publication,
- 55:57Speaker 1: just like Cathline, just like these, really and truly is
- 56:05Speaker 1: at a bit of a guess work when it comes
- 56:07Speaker 1: to certain things. For example, the most celebrated of those
- 56:09Speaker 1: being Brendan Soresby and his status, and at the time
- 56:14Speaker 1: that these publications went to print, Soresby had not been
- 56:19Speaker 1: ruled permanently ineligible, and you know or it had not
- 56:24Speaker 1: withdrawn his name and wasn't going to play for Texas
- 56:30Speaker 1: Tech and then was ruled ineligible for the Supplemental Draft
- 56:34Speaker 1: of the NFL. He is eligible for twenty twenty seven.
- 56:37Speaker 1: So at the time that these publications went to the printer,
- 56:42Speaker 1: they could only guess. Now, I will tell you this,
- 56:44Speaker 1: it was going to be very difficult for my friend
- 56:47Speaker 1: Greg Tepper, the editor in chief of Dave Campbell's Texas
- 56:50Speaker 1: Football magazine, and for them, especially with Texas Tech on
- 56:54Speaker 1: the cover of it. Joey McGuire's on the cover. This
- 56:57Speaker 1: is the first not for Tech to have its head
- 57:01Speaker 1: coach on the cover. The first is having a prominent
- 57:06Speaker 1: donor on the car, having Cody Campbell to the booster,
- 57:10Speaker 1: having him on the cover.
- 57:12Speaker 2: It's kind of framed like a well, that's Joey maguire
- 57:15Speaker 2: behind him, right, kind of framed like the like the
- 57:18Speaker 2: Sith floor looking over them.
- 57:19Speaker 1: Yeah, right, exactly. And and and I'll ask Chap when
- 57:23Speaker 1: I see him down in Houston this weekend at coaching school.
- 57:27Speaker 3: Maybe maybe those pictures should be reversed.
- 57:30Speaker 1: Yeah, who knows? About tail wagging dog and things of
- 57:33Speaker 1: that nature. I will ask him about that. Yeah, I
- 57:37Speaker 1: think this was the plan all along, was to have
- 57:40Speaker 1: these guys on the cover. I do not think that
- 57:43Speaker 1: Brendan Sorosby was ever in the picture for being on
- 57:45Speaker 1: the cover, so I don't they didn't have to change
- 57:50Speaker 1: the cover on that, and in fact, they probably because
- 57:55Speaker 1: I think they went to print later than the other
- 57:57Speaker 1: two have the closest proximation to how it's supposed to go.
- 58:03Speaker 1: With Texas Tech at its quarterback spot. They were not
- 58:06Speaker 1: counting on Soresby in this and they list Will Hammond,
- 58:10Speaker 1: the former Hutto Hippo, as the starter. Of the other
- 58:13Speaker 1: two didn't quite go the way of listing Will Hammond
- 58:18Speaker 1: because they were still waiting to see about Hammond coming
- 58:22Speaker 1: off the ACL surgery. But Joey McGuire has said from
- 58:26Speaker 1: the moment, at the very least he would be available
- 58:29Speaker 1: by the third game, and he said I think at
- 58:32Speaker 1: a recent interview that he thought he might be available
- 58:38Speaker 1: even for their season opener, that there was a chance
- 58:42Speaker 1: he might be available for their season opener. So and
- 58:47Speaker 1: again I think that's why Tepper and company listed Hammon
- 58:52Speaker 1: as the starting quarterback because they were going to press
- 58:55Speaker 1: later and they would have a chance to get to
- 58:59Speaker 1: that and and be able to project that because it
- 59:02Speaker 1: was a little bit closer uh to the start of
- 59:05Speaker 1: the season as opposed to what Aflon's and Lindy's were
- 59:08Speaker 1: calling for the number one quarterback spot for the Red Raiders.
- 59:13Speaker 1: They they had a different transfer right Texas Tech at quarterback.
- 59:18Speaker 2: Yeah, they well they've got they've got Will Hammond and
- 59:20Speaker 2: Kirk France.
- 59:21Speaker 3: Kirk France transferred in.
- 59:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and and Aflon's had Kirk France is listed as
- 59:26Speaker 1: well as as being the one. Anyway, that was That's
- 59:31Speaker 1: another one of those signposts that you're getting closer to
- 59:33Speaker 1: the start of the football season when you see these
- 59:35Speaker 1: preseason publications come out and and and looking at the Longhorns. Uh.
- 59:43Speaker 1: And we'll, you know, in the coming days and weeks,
- 59:46Speaker 1: we'll get into specific positional breakdowns. One position that we
- 59:52Speaker 1: really won't be breaking down that much will be quarterback
- 59:54Speaker 1: because it's arch panning. But but there will be a
- 59:56Speaker 1: lot of conversation about who the backup.
- 59:58Speaker 3: Could or oh, there'll be questions about the backup quarter oh.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah, so it would be you know, whether
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: it's Dia Bell or kJ Lacey, you know that that
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: sort of thing. You know, we'll see. But what what
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: is another feature of what Phil Steele does? He lists
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: like their seasonal results for the last five years, which
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: I think is in this case apropos because those are
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: the five years of Steve Sarkisian as head coach. This
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: will be sarks sixth season as head coach. Well that's
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: a tongue twister, sarks sixth season. And then also lists
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: like their last five bowl games as well, but that includes,
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: you know, the college football playoff games that they had
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: three of them in twenty twenty four, Clemson in Arizona State,
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: Clemson and home Arizona State and the Peach Bowl, and
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: then Ohio State and the Cotton Bowl, and it goes
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: back as far as the Sugar Bowl. When your last
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: five bowl games only date back three years, you know
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: the program is in a good place for that, which
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: brings us to the schedule this year. So I would
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: I would ask you because you said what you did
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: a little bit of a similar type of thing, a
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: little exercise similar to what we're about to do, which
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: you did while I was out on vacation.
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: Evan Veith and I went through the schedule all twelve
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: games and sort of tiered them in terms of our anticipation,
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: our excitement level for them.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: Okay, all right, all right, so that's like anticipation excitement.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: I'm going to ask you your opinion for the import
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: of each of these games, starting with we'll just say
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: we'll do this. Which of these twelve games would you
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: say is the twelfth most important game? They're all important
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: some of that, but but if you had to rank
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: them in terms of importance, which of these twelve games
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: will be the.
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: Twelfth most important UTSA Week three?
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: I'm in agreement with you because two games will be
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: under belt by then, and it's UTSA. Not that UTSA
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: is a scard thing, but you always have to be
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: ready for the start of season. Right.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: How about your eleventh most Evan and I differed here.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: I have Texas State. Evan had Arkansas. Okay, I'm in
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: agreement with you. I think Texas State.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: Now it is a season opener and you have to
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: be ready and all that sort of thing. And this
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: will be the first time these two programs have played
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: with Texas State. Being Texas State, this game has been
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: on the schedule for several years, and there's a great
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: deal of anticipation with the Bobcats that's coming up thirty
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: miles up the road. They've played in all other sports,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: you know, baseball, they play home at home annually, men's basketball,
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: and women's basketball, softball, they've all played Texas State, but
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: this will be the first time Long worn football team
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: has played the Texas State Bobcats. On that, and I'm
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: gonna agree with you. I think it's the eleventh most, right,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: tenth most.
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: Now, it's tough to put Arkansas at number ten because
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: this is a traditional rival, but on paper it looks
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: to be the most lopsided in terms of the talent
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: on the rosters preseason. Of the remaining games, I'll throw
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: it at number ten.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: I agree with you it put it this way, it's
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: the most secure of the conference games, a home game
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: against a team that's picked by many to finish in
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: last place in the Lake ninth most that.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: See, Now you're getting into a tier where a lot
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: of them are pretty similar.
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: I'll go with Mississippi State on Halloween.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: Okay, i'd agree with you on that all right, number eight?
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: Who I mean, Now, they're all important they're the ones
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: we've got left to talk about because they're all going
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: to be instrumental in terms of Texas reaching its goal
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: of making the College Football Playoff. And with this schedule
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: being so difficult, you can't lose, you know, you can't
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: have that many margins for air.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: I'll go with at Missouri Yep. Same here, on the
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: same boat with you there, all right, Seventh most now
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: it's yeah, it's it's tough, no matter what. Now, I'll
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: go with Florida.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: I hate putting Florida there because they lost to him
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: last year, right, but.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: It was in Gainesville, and you know that that sort
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: of thing. No, I'm so far. I'm in lockstep with you,
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: all right. Sixth most important.
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: In the same tier as Florida, Ole miss.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: Yep, all right, fifth most important game.
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: And this is crazy that it's only fifth in the
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: top five at LSU November fourteenth.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: For me, Yeah, I'm gonna say that, if only because
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: the next one I think that we're going to pick
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: it's a more difficult challenge, then this game will be.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: Even though going to Death Valley at Night is not
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: going to be easy. I'm with you on that, all right.
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: So LSU number five, number four.
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: So does that make your next one at tennis?
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: It does. It's a conference opener, it is a conference opener,
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: and and you know it is a road game. And
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: Tennessee is a better football team than LSU at least
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: right now. Anyway, I don't think so you don't.
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: I think LSU has got a have a better season
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: than Tennessee. Tennessee has more coming back from last year's roster.
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: I suppose they lost a lot, though Tennessee lost a
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: lot on defense.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm I'm inclined to think that Tennessee. In fact,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: Phil Steele has Tennessee ahead of LSU as well.
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: But LSU you're gonna find anywhere one through eight in
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: your SEC projections.
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: I feel Here's here's one thing that Phil Steele says.
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: If they take care of business at home versus Texas
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: and Alabama, they will put themselves in the thick of
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: the SEC title race and perhaps a trip back to
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: the playoffs.
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: It scares me to put this at number four because
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: this is probably Tennessee's number one.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: Well, if they're both road games, you think LSU's better,
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: Why would you rank LSU below the road game in Tennessee.
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: Because of the spot on the schedule.
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: I think Tennessee is more important because it's the SEC opener,
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: and because you might go into that game with the loss.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: Okay, all right, number three, I've got the red River game.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: All right, give me three two one. You got Oklahoma
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: number three.
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: At Texas A and M. Two.
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: I think the Ohio State game on September twelve is
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: the most important game of the season.
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: Okay, I'm not going to agree with you on that
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: because it's a non conference game and we've seen that
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: they if they don't lose to Florida, if other things
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: that am that, they're going to be in the playoff anyway,
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: despite the loss in Columbus a year ago. Now this
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: game is at home and it is important. I would
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: I'm going to put the the Oklahoma and Texas A
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: and M games as one in one A either way
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: you want to put them, yeah, And I would put
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: Ohio State numbers.
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: They're all one A, one B, and one C.
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: For me, I just think about the Ohio State game
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: through this lens Steve Sarkisian trying to break through and
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: get this Texas team past the College Football Playoff semi
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: final into that national championship.
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: Which you can do even if you lose to Ohio State.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: But you might not have the chance to do that
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: if you lose to Oklahoma and or Texas A and M.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: But who are the teams that have stood in their
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: way consistently, Ohio State and Georgia.
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: You don't play Georgia this year.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: Right, But again, I maintain you can get into the
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: playoffs with a loss to Ohio State. You might not
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: be able to get there if you lose to Oklahoma
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: tie breakers. Same thing with Texas A and M.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: But if Ohio State is who we think they are, yeah,
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: and you beat them, yeah, you got a real chance
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: of making it in with three losses.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: Yeah, it's true. It's true last year.
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: If you flip the Ohio State loss with Florida, Yeah,
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: or say flip the Ohio State loss, you know, you
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: beat them, but you lose to somebody else like a
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: Texas A and M R. Maybe there's a better argument
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: to put them in.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, it's it'd be interesting to see. All right.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: So that's that's how close it is. But we're pretty
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: close on a lot of these. All right. We'll be
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: back to wrap up power number two on thirteen under
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: the Zone. Third and final hour of the program here
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone. Craig Way,
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: joined by the producer Jay Kerman, Glad to have you
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: with us as well, and happy to have your input
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: as well. On the text line, you text the word
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: texts followed by your question and comment to eight one
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: five three zero. Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: You can reach us via the talkback microphone the talkback feature.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: Download the free and easy to navigate iHeartRadio app search
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: AM thirteen under the Zone. It pops right up. Then
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: you push the little red button with a white microphone
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: that activates that talkback microphone, and then you have the
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: opportunity to leave us a voice message up up to
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: thirty seconds. If it's clean and not objectionable, then we'll
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: air it. We'll put it on the air.
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: Not objectionable like my Ohio State game.
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: Take no, No, we can you. It's a valid take
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: what you have. I happen to look at it differently,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: but I don't. I don't dismiss it at all because
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: you make a very good point that if the Longhorns win.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: You know, obviously the season opening is Texas State and
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: then beat Ohio State. Then things are set in motion.
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: At that point at two and zero, they're going to
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: be in the top five at the very least, probably
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: in the top two or three at that point, you know, So, yeah,
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: I don't. I don't see anything really faulty in your
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: logic when we were ranking what in terms of importance,
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: what we think are the most important and least important
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: or at least the one And of course this is
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: the kind of conversation you never want to have with
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: a head coach. You never want to have the which
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: game is more important than the other games? Conversation with
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: the head coach. I can promise you I won't to
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: have that conversation with Steve Circasian didn't think so. I'm
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: going to see Sark this Sunday when he participates in
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: the Division one FBS Football Coaches Panel discussion as part
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: of the Texas High School Coaches Association's annual Coaching School
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: and Convention that's been going on since the nineteen thirties,
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: and it's in Houston this year. It's largely been in
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: San Antonio, but it's alternated in Houston. There was many
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: years in the seventies, eighties and nineties, it was it
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: would alternate between it would go Dallas, Houston, Fort Worth, Houston,
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: Dallas Houston, Fort Worth, Houston. And that's to make sure
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: they got maxed out the membership of coaches, because some
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: from South Texas might not want to go all the
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: way up to the Metroplex, but only given a year.
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: Those from the pan Ina on West Texas might not
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: want to go all the way to Houston. But the
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: one city that they could all agree on that they
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: like going to with San Antonio, because I'm to take
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: the families and they might go to s to Texas
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: or you know, SeaWorld or whatever that sort of stuff,
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: and you know, and you got the River Walk and
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff. So San Antonio kind of
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: got incorporated, but it took a long time to get
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: it because San Antonio, the convention in visitors Beuer, wasn't
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: that interested in you know, they're one of the biggest
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: convention cities in the world, San Antonio is, and they
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: really weren't that interested in hosting. And it took quite
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: a bit of work on the part of the Coaches
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: Association to convince them. You know, when you got thirteen
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: thousand coaches and I know what the argument is from
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: the other side. Yeah, you got thirteen thousand coaches coming
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: into town, and they come into town with one pair
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: of underwear and a ten dollar bill and they don't
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: change either throughout the course of the weekend. There was that.
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: Now in later years we discovered that not to be
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: the case. That golf courses and gentlemen's cabarets do landmark
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: business during a coaching school.
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: Do they know as well?
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I've been told that that it happens that way
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: as well. But I will tell you this, the leadership
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: of the Coaches Association with they have with Joe Martin
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: and Glenn West and those people, they have really transformed
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: not only the convention but also the association. It's with
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: the Education Foundation. I've served on the board of that.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: The things that they do, the motto of the Coach
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: Associations helping coaches help kids, the different involved activities that
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: they're involved in, and the fundraising efforts and things of
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: that nature. It's been very, very impressive to see. And
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: because this is the largest coaching convocation in the world,
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: with like I said, more than thirteen thousand there, they
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: attract top of the line speakers in terms of college
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: football and also in basketball. I mean they've had you
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: name it, the biggest names in the game have all
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: lectured at coaching School for Texas because the college coaches
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: also know it's beneficial to them to continue to network
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: with the high school coaches in the state, recruiting, after all,
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: being the lifeblood of the success of a program. So
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: with that in mind, for over twenty years, on Sunday afternoon,
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: they've had a panel discussion where they get every Division
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: one FPS coach up on a stage and they hand
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: yours truly a microphone and some questions and I have
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: I try to get and it's it's a challenge and
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: in about an hour's time or a little over an
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: hour's time to get all thirteen of those coaches to
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: have an opportunity to speak at least twice a piece
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: during the course of that. So there's a question assigned
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: to each and then what we'll do is we may
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: roll through some additional questions as well. So I did
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: this the other day, Let's see if I can remember
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: it again. The thirteen Division one FPS programs, the coaches
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: from these programs SMU, TCU, North Texas, Texas tech U,
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: TEP Baylor, Texas, Texas A, and M Houston Rice Sam
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: Houston UTSA.
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: About leaving what you really left out Sam Houston the
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: other time, but you said that today? Yeah, yeah, did
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: you say Texas State.
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: I didn't say Texas there. It's right because I jumped
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: straight from Houston, San Antonio. So every every every time
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: I do this, one gets left out, but it's a
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: different one every time.
- 1:15:30Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: So it's something about our brain, right, phone numbers one
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: of the twelve digits.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: Yeah. Right. So anyway, I can't believe I forget about
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: g J Kinney and Texas State, but but I've had
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: UTSA pop out of mind. I was like, how could
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: I forget about that? Because you know it's uh, it's
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: you know, you think of that the teams the opponents
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: on the Texas schedule rind of mind, and both UTSA
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: and Texas State are on the Texas schedule this year.
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: Those two games wrapped around the Ohio State game as well. UTSA.
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: By the way, when when when you and I talked
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: about this in terms of ranking of the importance of
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: these games you mentioned I asked you which game did
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: you think was the I didn't say not important. I
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: just said the twelfth most important game, and you said
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: UTSA correct. Yep, and uh, with no disrespect at all
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: intended for the Roadrunners or head coach Jeff Trailer. I
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: would agree with you only because where it falls in
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: the schedule. Yep. And it is a non conference game.
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: But it's not like UTSA is going to be a doormat.
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: They're picked second in the American Athletic Conference behind Navy,
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: so they're picked to finished second. Of course, last year
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: Tulane won the league to beat North Texas in the final.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: Tulane has picked third in that league. North Texas, by
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: the way, after being just absolutely devastated by the portal
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: and by the loss of their head coach Eric Morris
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: and losing their quarterback Drew Mestimaker the Vandergrid Viper, and
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: losing their number one running back and their number one
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: wide receiver as well, losing all of those to Oklahoma State.
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: Does a mascot stay.
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: I'm telling you that me and Green will be building up.
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: In fact, Phil Steel has him out of twelve teams, No,
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: out of fourteen teams. I guess he's got them eleventh
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: out of fourteen. They come off a bowl win North
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: Texas does over San Diego State and the New Mexico Bowl,
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: but they lost quarterback, top wide receivers and others all
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: headed for still Water going to Oklahoma State there. So
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: that's definitely Eric Morris the new head coach at Oklahoma
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: State after Mike Gundy was let go after all those years.
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: So yeah, we'll see. We'll also see how much that
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: helps Oklahoma State. New blood, new infusion, new head coach,
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: and a lot of new talent coming in to still
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: Water for that Oklahoma State program as they try to
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: get things turned around. They had a very difficult time
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: last year and the Cowboys went one and eleven a
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: year ago. Their one win a season ago for Oklahoma
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: State was their season opener against you team, Martin, and
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: they lost eleven in a row after that.
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: So let's to your point on UTSA, They've got the
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: probably the best returning quarterback now in the conference with
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: the departure of mess to Maker and Owen mccownt and
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: his senior season. Will Henderson the third is on the
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: first team offense, if not in Lindy's Preview magazine, so
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: they'll have some firepower back.
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yep, absolutely In Oklahoma State will be improved with
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: mess to make her quarterback to projector at Caleb Hawkins
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: will be a sophomore at the running back. I had
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: such a fabulous freshman campaign at North Texas.
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: So I talked to Steve Helwick, who covered the Big
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: twelve media days in Frisco. He said, of all the
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: head coaches, the new head coaches making a first impression,
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: he came away the most impressed with Eric Morris.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, he can do that. He can definitely impress you,
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: that's for sure. I'm missed having the opportunity to visit
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: with him on that podium, on that stage because the
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: thirteen coaches there are Division one coaches in the state
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: of Texas. But like I said, I'll see Sark on Sunday,
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: you know, I'll see Sunny Dyke's of TCU on Sunday.
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: Dave Randa, the head coach at Baylor, obviously, Joey Maguire
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: Texas Tech, GJ Kenniott Texas State, Jeff Trailer, who's usually
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: the most entertaining of all thirteen. He's usually the one
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: that breaks up the group the most. It's pretty funny
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: and I've known him a long time. If I called
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: three of the state championship games for television. Great guy,
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: but all those guys. Willie Fritz has become a real
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: popular now with what he did at the University of Houston,
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: Jeff Haybell, with what he did at Rice and starting
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: to turn them around. I'm always impressed with what Rhet
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: Lashley from SMU, what he has to say about that.
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: And we mentioned North Texas losing Eric Morris, but you know,
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: you might say all not being completely lost for the
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: Mean Green because they're gonna get Neil Brown in as
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: the new head coach. He was, of course the former
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: coach of West Virginia, did a great job at Troy
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: when he was in the Sunbelt earlier. So Neil Brown
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: will be up there on the stage. So we'll look
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: forward those conversations and then we'll have a recap of
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: that early next week before heading to Tampa for SEC
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: foot Media Days, where we were here from Longhorns and
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: others as well. Okay, up next, check the open leaderboard.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: The first round now completely finished, and we'll hear from
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: some of the particulars in that first round. And we
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: got more college football to get to when we continue
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: on a Thursday, afternoon on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: the Zone any iHeartRadio app? Okay, yeah, dam is this
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: NBC Golf music again?
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: And we've got the Open Championship theme. It goes by
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: the name Legend.
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: Okay, all right, there it is. We'll get to the
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: leaderboard here and here's from sound here. In just a
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: moment on the text line, we had somebody sent a
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: text and said, you're in North Carolina and a Greensboro area. Guy.
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: Most people are now familiar with high Point. Why is
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: there a town twenty miles away called Climax, North Carolina.
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: The story and what I'm about to do is I'm
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: going to tell you about there are four towns within
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: a fifty mile not even that, about a thirty thirty
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: five mile range of where I grew up in North Carolina. Now,
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: the area where I grew up in Greensboro is known
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: as the Piedmont Triad. The triad is three cities, Greensboro,
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: high Point, Winston Salem. Winston Salem is where wake Forest
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: is located. The school at the entire university actually moved
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: from wake Forest, North Carolina, which was out a little
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: bit east of Raleigh back in the mid fifties. R. J. Reynolds,
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: the big tobacco magnate, paid millions of dollars he wanted
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: as he built up this city through his tobacco empire,
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: wanted a major university there. So he paid to move
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: the entirety of wake Forest University about nineteen fifty three
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: to move it about one hundred miles west to Winston Salem.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: So that's where it was. Wake Forest was actually located
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: in wake Forest, North Carolina until the early fifties, announced
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: in Winston Sale but it's there. So these three cities
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: comprised the Piedmont Triad, and they are They add up
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: to a total population about a half a million. I'd
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: say they're known for three different things. Mainly I mentioned
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: earlier the Greensboro was really textiles and to a lesser extent,
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: insurance as well. Winston Salem is about tobacco. You've heard
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: of the cigarettes. Winston and Salem they were at one
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: point two separate cities. They merged and incorporated in nineteen thirteen,
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: and that's where the big RJ. Reynolds tobacco company is.
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: They get high Point, which is known really as the
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: furniture Capital. That's where Thomas furniture comes from Thomson was
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: a little town right outside of there. So they're known
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: for their different things. And there's lots of little towns
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: around in the area. There are four cities in this area.
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: These cities carry these names, high Point, which I just mentioned,
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: high Point, Climax, Erect, and Hornytown. No they don't, Yeah
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: they do. Yeah, there's four towns there, high Point, Climax,
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: Erect in a horningtown. And he noticed, I said, erect.
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: That's how they pronounced it. It is spelled erect as
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: if you were going to erect a building, you know,
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: E R E C T, but's pronounced erect. In fact,
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: Erect is probably only about five miles from.
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: An old church.
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: Church and church cemetery in a little area known as
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: Pleasant Hill, where several of my and sisters are buried,
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: including my great great grandfather Samuel Houston Way, who was
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: a Quaker minister. He did serve in the Confederate Army,
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: but he got leave to go preach to his congregation.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: He did not command much there was he was I
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: was told a Confederate colonel.
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: But Samuel Houston, no wonder. You got to Texas as
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: soon as you could.
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: How about that he was my great great grandfather that
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: he lived from eighteen thirty to nineteen ten.
- 1:25:27Speaker 3: Got to be careful naming a church in Erect.
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: Yeah, Erect, well they went, they erected a church there,
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: you know, so Erect Climax And yes, Hornytown. Now Hornytown
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: is spelled h O r n e Y t Own.
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: The name Horny with an E before the y is
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: one of those names in that part of the state
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: that's rather common. We had a guy who was pretty
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: good football player. It was a year behind me at
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: my high school. Rag saw Chuck Horny, and he pretty
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: good football player. In fact, he followed me as the
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: sports editor or the Tiger Prowl, the school newspaper I
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: was in high school there. So the answer to the
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: Texas question, I don't know what the story is with
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: that with Climax. Climax is a tiny little place on
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: the Highway sixty two, kind of between Burlington and Greensboro
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: and Ashboro' It's a very small little town. In fact,
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: to call it a town would be a stretch. It's
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: a community really, with a couple of the what did
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: I say earlier curb markets. You know, it would be
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: convenience ores, that sort of thing. That most of these
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: are or are farming communities. They're very small little towns
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: outside of the area. Erect is a very small little town,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: despite what the name might suggest, not growing. It's not growing,
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: not growing, not showing not to stop it. It's it's
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: just it's a very small town.
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: Climax but not quite.
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not that far from it.
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: Its far so you're approaching it.
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: Anyway. That's yeah, that's all I know about it.
- 1:27:15Speaker 3: I thought I had to do with the elevation climax
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: versus high point.
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: It could be, it could be. I do know the
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: reason for a high point. It's kind of like in
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: this state. Up in Denton County, north of Dallas and
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: north of Denton is a town called pilot Point, And
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: in fact, I was for a couple of years the
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: play by play voice of the pilot Point Bearcats when
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: I was in college in North Texas. They were a
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: two eight football dynasty, one back to back state titles
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: in eighty one and eighty eighty and eighty one and
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: won a later title. They they were a really outstanding
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: small school football program. But it was named the community
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: for something that was a point of measurement was surveyors
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: and the same thing with hilot High Point was named
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: because it was the highest ground on where they were
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: surveying to lay the railroad in the eighteen hundred.
- 1:28:13Speaker 3: So you want to be the coach at Pilot Point,
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: you got to wear the Joe Gibbs aviators.
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: Yeah, right, exactly. Well. Ga Moore, who was a legendary
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: coach and in one over four hundred games until just
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: a few years ago, was the all time winning his
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: coach in Texas high school football. Ga was the coach.
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: It was from Pilot Point, played at North Texas, came
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: back and his first coaching job was at Pilot Point.
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: Then he left to go be the head coach fifteen
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: miles east on farm to Market four fifty five at Salina,
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: which we know to be a dynastic program. He was
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: there for a while, then he went back to Pilot Point.
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: He won state championships at Solina, then he won state
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: championships at pilot Point. Then he tried his and at
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: the big school. He went to Sherman. He was there
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: a couple of years, had a winning season, but didn't
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: like it. Went back coach at Aubrey, another community right
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: there in the area. But he was one of the
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: all time legendary head coaches. He was at pilot Point
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: high Point is was because of measurement I cannot give
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: you because I don't know the explanation and the origin
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: of the names of Climax, Erect, and Hornytown. The only
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: thing I can think of, Like I said, Horningtown is
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: horny with an it's h r in ey, not the
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: way some might think of that hr in the e.
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: Y was because that was a common name at that time.
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: Up there, are you looking up something on the origin
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: of these towns.
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: All I'm getting for Erect, North Carolina is the pottery
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: capital of North Carolina.
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: Yeah, it's right near Seagrove and Jug Town, which is yeah,
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: by the way that's saying there too is jug Town.
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: But the the reason for Jugtown is pottery. It's all
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: about pottery. Sea Grove, which is fifteen miles south of Ashboro,
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: where my dad grew up, is known really and truly
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: as the pottery capital of North Carolina. Erect is very small.
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: Seagrove actually has a lot of pottery shops, and there's
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: a little just a mile or two outside of town
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: called Jugtown, which is basically pottery stores.
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: And you're right, Hornytown was named for the Horny family.
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought so, I thought.
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: But Hornytown and jug Town, right, it gives your wrong
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: ideas about these others set.
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: They're about forty miles apart. But jug Town is because
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: of pottery. That's why Sea Grove, as it's said, by
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: the way, the reason Seagrove got its name is archaeologists
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: discovered seashells, actual seashells in the soil Seagrove. And you said,
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: what's a big deal about that? Seagrove is like one
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: hundred and eighty five miles inland from the host so
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: it should in the day when the oceans, which were
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: all connected before the land masses broke them up, you know,
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: millions and millions of years ago, there were seashells in
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: the soil there Sea Grove. And that's why wound up
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: being like it, what hang on?
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: How about the nearby town of why Not in the
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: Pimont triad.
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: Yeah, the deal with why Not is and it's on
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: it's on the highway seven O five and it's just
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: right outside of Sea Grove. Uh. And in fact, you
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: would take a turn off of seven o five and
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: why not to go to drugtown? Why not? Jugdown? You'd say,
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: The reason why not is called that is because when
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: these people set up the town, there was a great
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: debate over what to name the town, and there was
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: and it was like, why not name this? Why not?
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: And they finally said, why not just call it? Why not?
- 1:31:52Speaker 3: It's you know, every town had that conversation, but only
- 1:31:55Speaker 3: why Not settled on that name.
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: Why not North Carolina? Yeah, and that's why they call
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: it that. It's why not. All right, we'll get why
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: not get back to some other topics, which we'll do
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: with the Open Championship next on thirteen under.
- 1:32:09Speaker 3: The zone No no matter, get where you're going with this, since.
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: We were talking about higher elevations with the Antal Mountain high enough.
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: You know, I hear the song and it always makes
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: me thinking, remember the Titans. So because it's it's taken
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: to that. Just one more note about this business about
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: these these towns where I grew up, there were there
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: was another town. Uh, there were a couple other towns nearby,
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: and one of them was called black Ankle. Black Ankle,
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: really yep, Black Ankle. And I asked my dad about
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: Black Ankle and he said it comes from there. Used
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: to be coal mines down there. So there's a little
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: community called Black.
- 1:33:00Speaker 3: Ankle nineteen twenty eight to nineteen thirty five.
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it was, and then the area is still.
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: There's an exit off US two twenty for Black Ankle Road.
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: You can go to it. I've driven over that way,
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: but yeah, Black Ankle, it's another one. But listen, North
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: Carolina got nothing on Texas on weird town names. Let
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: me just tell you that right now.
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: Or weird mascots like the Wampus Cats.
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, exactly. There are a lot of people huddo
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: hippos is you know, because it's so unique. But yeah,
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: there's unusual names for towns in Texas. Okay, to the Leaderboard,
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: I mentioned that Jackson super holds the first round league
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: minus five, soon JM. Daniel Brown at minus four, Thomas Tatree,
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: Robert McIntyre, Francisco Francesco Molinari, Alex Smalley, Bryson De Shamba,
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: Ryan Gerard MJ. Duffy spelled Dafa few e but pronounced
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: Duffies from South Africa. Ladies Collegiate Golf at Lamar Over Beaumont, Pearson, Cootie,
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: the long warn Cameron Young all at minus three. The Shambo,
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: I mentioned, had you know, missed the cut and the
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: prior three majors, So he was staring history in the
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: fact in the face. In fact, when Cameron Parker was
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: with us yesterday he said he was rooting for in
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: the misticut. I said, wait a minute, I thought you
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: softened your stance on to Shamba, even though he'd gone
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: over to lift golf. He said, I have, but this
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: is history. So he was hoping to see him miss
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: the cut. I don't think it's going to happen. He
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: shot three hundred sixty seven and in the first tower
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: of the program, we heard Sir Nick Faldo, who's working
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: for Sky Sports say that basically Bryson to Shambo, who
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: was lacking strategy, he was just attacking without strategy. Well,
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: the Shambo was asked, what kind of strategy did he have?
- 1:34:55Speaker 7: You know, I think he've got to be a lot
- 1:34:57Speaker 7: more strategic out on the golf course. And I feel
- 1:34:59Speaker 7: like I did a really good job today of being
- 1:35:01Speaker 7: incredibly strategic and focused, super hard and placing it in
- 1:35:04Speaker 7: the right places. Besides eighteen, I placed the ball in
- 1:35:08Speaker 7: some some good areas, but just he did more fairways.
- 1:35:10Speaker 7: Other than that, I felt like my strategy was nice today.
- 1:35:13Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, if you keep you track. He said it
- 1:35:15Speaker 3: three times in a strategy fifteen second answer, Yeah, strategy.
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: So that was his strategy. So he's at minus three
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: and then the group at minus two. Now this currently
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: is tied for thirteenth because of all the other tithe like.
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: For example, there's a two way tie for second between
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: Im and Brown at minus four, and then there is
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: one two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight nine way
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: tie for fourth at minus three with Detree McIntyre, Moullinary,
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: smally To Shamba, Girard and Duffy and Pierson, Cootie and
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: Cameron Young. They're all at minus four at minus three
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: at two under Jordan Smith, Victor Perez, Jaquin Lungergren, Rio Hsatuni, Seawoo, Kim,
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: Nick Taylor, Sepstraca, Bud Cawley, Colin Morikawa, and Scotty Scheffler.
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: Morikawa and Scheffler both had their round and minus four,
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: and both gave Way a couple of shots on the
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: back nine to finish it in minus two. Remember Marikawall
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: like Scheffler is a former winner of the Open Championship.
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: He won it four years ago. I believe he wanted
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: at live them. It might have been at Royal Saint
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: George's now that I think about it. So he won
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: it four years ago. So those two guys are former champions.
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: And you were right on your correction Royal Saint George. Yep,
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: all right. So so Scheffler, who felt pretty good about
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: his round, gave a few things back, was asked a question,
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: and this is a very valid question. You don't hear
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: me at times say things about, you know, why did
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: the reporter ask this question? Why did the report of
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: that ask that question. It's in a logical question things
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: like that, and it's been often said, and I completely
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: agree with this. The most challenging part of being a
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: sports broadcaster isn't play by play. That's either a skill
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: that you have or you don't know that you can
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: develop it. My mentor the late Bill Mercy teacher, you
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: can actually diagram it and teach you how to do
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: play by play and get it in an a rhythmic flow.
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: It's not play by play, and it's not doing a sportscast.
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: It's the interview. The art of the interview being able
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: to ask questions decent enough questions to elicit a decent
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: enough response. And sometimes that just isn't the case. People
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: just don't ask very good questions. I take a dim
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: view of any question that starts with the words walk
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: me through blah blah blah blah blah. It's lazy journalism.
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: Walk me through. No, you walk through it asking that
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: what you know, what kind of plan did you have
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: when you got to the par four eleventh and you
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: were over on the right rock, not walk me through
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: the shot thing. That's one of my pet beeves that
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: sort of thing. But Scheffler has asked a good question,
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: and this has to do with the choice of driving
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: the golf ball with a driver, or say a three
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: wood or four wood, or hitting an iron, two iron,
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: three iron, four iron. Every hole obviously is different, but
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: even the longer holes might present different strategies. There's that
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: word again, on the part of how each individual golfer
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: pursues that. And so Scheffler was asked about the aggressive
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: nature of pulling out the driver even on long holes,
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: but it might have narrow landing areas where you might
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: have you know, heavy rough on one side, or haven't
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: forbid gorse on the other or bunkers, And he was
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: asked about juxtaposing driving aggressively with the driver as opposed
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: to hitting with the irons to make sure that he
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: could land it in the fairway and the importance of
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: being able to land the ball in the fairway. I mean,
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: there's different strategies.
- 1:39:24Speaker 5: You know, I played with with two guys today that
- 1:39:26Speaker 5: that took out driver a lot, and I actually got
- 1:39:28Speaker 5: a little bit more aggressive with my strategy after seeing that.
- 1:39:31Speaker 5: A couple of times, like the second hole is a
- 1:39:33Speaker 5: good example where the last few days I've been hitting
- 1:39:35Speaker 5: foreign out there in the fairway and today it just
- 1:39:37Speaker 5: kind of looked.
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: Like looked like driver, and so switch it up and
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: end up hitting driver.
- 1:39:41Speaker 5: And so's there's different ways to play the golf course,
- 1:39:44Speaker 5: and I think that is that's a sign of, you know,
- 1:39:46Speaker 5: a good championship golf course. I think it's unique in
- 1:39:49Speaker 5: a sense of we have to think a lot off
- 1:39:52Speaker 5: the tee or on this golf course, and so on
- 1:39:53Speaker 5: certain holes and certain pen locations that'll be really important
- 1:39:55Speaker 5: to be in the fairway. But then there's also you
- 1:39:57Speaker 5: know the element of surprise a little bit when you
- 1:40:00Speaker 5: do head offline. You know, sometimes you get some lies
- 1:40:02Speaker 5: you can get up on the green, and then other
- 1:40:04Speaker 5: times you're going to be in some tough spots. So overall,
- 1:40:06Speaker 5: I mean, it's always important to get the ball in play,
- 1:40:08Speaker 5: but there are.
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: Some spots where you can be aggressive on this golf course.
- 1:40:11Speaker 5: And today was a day in which even the shots
- 1:40:14Speaker 5: I was hitting aggressively still have to get the ball
- 1:40:16Speaker 5: in the fairly. So I wish I could have gotten
- 1:40:18Speaker 5: a little bit more out of it. But overall, like
- 1:40:20Speaker 5: I said, I played some solid golf, so just continue
- 1:40:22Speaker 5: that over the course of the tournament.
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: He sounded more upbeat today after the round than he
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: did in the pre tournament press conferences, when he sounded
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: kind of dogmatic about things, and eh, you know it's
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: I mean, some of you is. I don't mean for
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: it to sound real gloom, but I'm eventually going to
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: die and nobody's going to really care about what legacy
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: I have on the golf course, so you feel better
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: about it.
- 1:40:47Speaker 3: Yeah, it was the quote this year, We're all going
- 1:40:49Speaker 3: to die. Yeah, right at the end of the day,
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: I'm going to live by life and it's going to
- 1:40:52Speaker 3: end history. To me, isn't that important. I don't want
- 1:40:55Speaker 3: to be remembered for winning the tournaments. I'd rather be
- 1:40:56Speaker 3: remembered for the way that I did it, doing things
- 1:40:58Speaker 3: the right way, treating people the right way.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:41:00Speaker 3: People calling it the existential open because of ry McElroy
- 1:41:04Speaker 3: similar comments.
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: Yeah think, okay, all right, very good. Maybe Roy'll take
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: a more existential approach since he shot seventy three today.
- 1:41:11Speaker 3: Who knows, maybe just a better approach shot would do.
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, We'll be back to wrap up today's
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: edition of the program on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: the Zone in the iHeartRadio app. As we get down
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: toward the end of the program, some of the else
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: in the tax line weighing in said it was phenomenally
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: explanations and then he said to you, but you're trying
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: to break him up? Was fantastic.
- 1:41:34Speaker 3: Yeah, that's Rob, one of our longtime listeners. I replied
- 1:41:37Speaker 3: and thanked him for the question because that was a
- 1:41:39Speaker 3: fun conversation about those North Carolina towns.
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: He said, I only knew of Climax because of a
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: friend of mine who grew up in Durham, and she
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: mentioned it while Highpoint was doing well in march madness,
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: but adding those other towns made it more fun for sure. Well,
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: there it is, Rob. You can tell you your friend,
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: she probably knows about it. Being from Durham, she probably knows.
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: There's there's a town not that far from Durham called Frogsborough.
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: Like frogs I stopped and again what was back there?
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: Called a curb Mark convenience store. There was no signs
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: that set it, but I knew where I was, and
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: I and I had to be cheeking. I said, what
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: do they call the name of this communion? So I
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: said Frogsborough. I was like, oh, okay, all right. I
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: didn't ask for any further explanation of it.
- 1:42:26Speaker 3: If it was only so simple an erect.
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: Yeah right, right exactly. So yeah, those all of those
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: towns are real towns or small communities. Like I said,
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: Climax is very small community. Erect is a small community.
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: There's not there may be, you know, I don't even
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: know if there's an actual that. The way I judge
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: town sometimes is do you do you have a mercantile
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: at some point? Do you have a do you have
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: a convenience store? Do you have a grocery store? Do
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: you have something like that where folks would go to
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: pick up things, you know, if you lived in the community,
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: instead of having to drive. There's a Climax is three
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: miles away from another small town called Julian. Julian like
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: Julian Lennon, you know, Julian and but Julian's a little
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: bit bigger. It's got a couple of stores. But I
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: think there is one in Climax. Just not sure about Erech.
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: They got issues of their own, all right, I hope not.
- 1:43:27Speaker 5: No.
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: All right, we'll be back with you tomorrow to get
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: you ready for the weekend. So for the producer Jay Carman,
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: I'm Craig Wait, thanks for joining us, Bucky and vk up. Next,
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: we'll visit with you tomorrow two o'clock. Right here, I'm
