- 1:40SPEAKER_03: I'm good.
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: I'm good.
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: Very excited to talk about this film.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: Nobody wants to talk about it with me, so thank you for giving me this opportunity.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Did you um have you got work today or are you just uh um a little bit.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: I'm doing some I'm doing some writing later.
- 1:55SPEAKER_03: Oh nice but I've got one of those four-day weeks that everybody is striving for.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: I'm very very lucky to have that.
- 2:04SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, so like you do a little bit of well what what do you do other than um I don't know what you do outside of like because I only met you for the first time through that um like I knew you online, but I met you for the first time from uh the the new act thing, the competition that you were judging.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: Um Yes, so I I mean comedy-wise, I write about I write about comedy.
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: I'm from a journalism background.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: Um I mean you yeah, you know that about me.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: Um but the rest of the week I work at UCL um in a kind of sustainability capacity.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: Oh that's cool.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: But yeah, a lot of fun.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: Do you like do you like the uh the massive contrast between the two uh sides of things?
- 2:53SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, in a big way.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: It's it's nice to um yeah, I kind of kind of have my oh god, this is gonna sound really bad if anybody from work listens to this.
- 3:03SPEAKER_03: I got the fun stuff and then I got the work things and I can make it.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: People know that work is not usually the most fun.
- 3:09SPEAKER_03: I do like it.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you can still enjoy it.
- 3:11SPEAKER_03: I like it, but yeah, no, it's it's quite nice to have a bit of separation.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like I at the moment I'm just like all in on the comedy stuff because like I got so tired, I got tired of I so I I used to work in marketing and I just got so tired of it that I was just like, okay, now I'm gonna branch out a little bit and like focus on the comedy stuff.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: And so now like even my day job is literally just working in a comedy club, so it's very weird now.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: Oh, but no, it's it's great.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: Uh I've I've seen you, I've seen you at work in your element, and you seem to be managing everything okay, so why not make more of it?
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: I enjoy it.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: It's a it's a fun job.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, so you've come on today to talk about the movie Vampire Academy.
- 4:03SPEAKER_04: I have.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Which you were talking about, like can you remind me like how we came about?
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: You were talking about it online, but I can't remember what you were saying.
- 4:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I was tweeting about it.
- 4:13SPEAKER_03: I tweet about it a lot, and it's like Do you that's the first time I noticed you tweet about it.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: Okay, this is probably because of because Twitter's algorithms don't like it when people don't like your tweets.
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: And whenever I write about Vampire Academy, it just goes off into the ether and nobody cares.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: But I'm gonna I'm I'm gonna carry on because I just think it is one of the most incredible things that has been made.
- 4:38SPEAKER_03: Um not for you know, not for the reason that it's like up there with the best films of the century, but for you know, a lot of other reasons.
- 4:46SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, so I did I tweeted a a thing about it with like why's nobody talking about this?
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: And then nobody except me for the case.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: Nobody talked about it.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: Except you.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: And then I was like, do you want to talk about it?
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: I want to talk about it.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: Um but it has so it has 16% on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics and 55% from the audience.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: So it's still low for the audience.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: It's it's still low.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: But it's a people that love it.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: It's still a big difference between them.
- 5:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the people that love it really love it.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: And they like genuinely feel like it's an amazing film.
- 5:25SPEAKER_03: It's based on a book series that has a lot of fans.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: I went into this blind, but yeah, like so I only found out about the book series like through reading about it afterwards, but yeah.
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I haven't read them, but I was gonna ask, yeah.
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: No, I I don't think I can put myself through that.
- 5:39SPEAKER_03: There's quite a lot.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: How many are there?
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: Do you know?
- 5:42SPEAKER_03: I think maybe like six.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Oh seven?
- 5:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because this was definitely intended to be the start of the city.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, based on the ending, it's definitely pretended to be like leading to something else.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:54SPEAKER_03: It's really trying.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: Um but it's also uh it's I don't know, it's a very strange like tone to the movie.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: Do you want to like s since you know the movie like better than me and I only watched it for the first time last night blind, do you want to explain the premise of the movie?
- 6:20SPEAKER_03: I will try, because there are loads of them.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: It's got so many overlapping plots.
- 6:26SPEAKER_03: Right, so in general, it takes place in a um kind of creepy Hogwarts um somewhere in America that is I think maybe I think Montana is mentioned at one point, but uh you know it's not, you know, generic America.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: It's generic America, but it's also clearly filmed in England.
- 6:43SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, and most people in it are English as well, and it's yeah, very weird.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: Um and there's a a vampire princess and her half vampire guardian, um, who have just been brought back to school after escaping, um and in a very kind of under very mysterious circumstances.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: In a very confusing way.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: Very confusing way.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: Although, given how much exposition there is immediately and how much they describe exactly what is happening, it's it is surprising that you're still so confused about what's going on, because they literally they describe every single thing.
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: Um but it's sort of there's like a lot of teen high school drama mixed in with like scary vampire stuff.
- 7:32SPEAKER_03: Um and there are these there are the the three types of vampire.
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: There's like the the royalty, the the guardians, and then the kind of nuts ones that will rip your heads off.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: Um, and it's sort of a yeah, all kind of trying to escape from the bad ones while dealing with high school drama and like some really really inappropriate teacher-student relationships.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: Very creepy, very weird, yeah.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: Um, so yeah, that's the basic premise of it.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: How many times have you seen it?
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: I I honestly don't know.
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: Um a lot, a a huge amount.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: Um my old flatmate and I used to watch it together constantly.
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: We'd get to the end of the week and be like, Do you want to go out?
- 8:23SPEAKER_03: No, let's just like let's just like maybe watch Rambar Academy again.
- 8:28SPEAKER_03: Just because it's like one of our most quotable films.
- 8:33SPEAKER_03: There's so many just like ridiculous phrases that come up in in our usual conversation.
- 8:39SPEAKER_03: But it sort of falls into that um kind of really crap teenage drama, um, teen like movie that I'm just obsessed with.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: I say you're you're very into that style.
- 8:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I love it.
- 8:56SPEAKER_03: I just think the kind of the um the bring it on sequels are all in that same thing.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: And like the sin a s another Cinderella story, all of the kind of sequels.
- 9:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like sequels to like very much Yeah.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, this is this Vampire Academy very much has a a kind of shit sequel vibe to it.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: Though it does.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: It has very TV movie vibes.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 9:24SPEAKER_03: Although unsurprisingly, yeah, it it's directed by the guy who did Mean Girls and Freaky Friday.
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: And I also found out this morning that it was written by his brother who wrote Heathers.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: Which is which blows my mind that the guy that wrote Heathers wrote this.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: Because Heathers is fantastic, and then this is Heathers amazing.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: Wait, what are you about to say?
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: You're gonna say this is crap.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: I was very confused like like like you said, like despite the huge amount of exposition, I was lost for the first half of this movie.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: I'd no idea what was going on.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: Well, that's why I've watched it so many times.
- 10:04SPEAKER_03: You have to watch it so that you can understand what's going on.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: Well how how did you come across it in the first place?
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: Do you remember Um I don't know.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: I think it was in it was definitely in a haze of watching all of those other kind of ones of the the same genre.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: Um I think it just got recommended to me because of my horrible algorithms I've made as well.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: This is what I get now.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: Your friends all know you.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: Oh you like Oh, you mean like Netflix knew you?
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Netflix knows me and they know that this is what I want.
- 10:36SPEAKER_03: I'm just I'm leaning into it now.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: But the other thing is, like, the cast of this is like huge as well.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: Like you were telling me the other day before before we were gonna record it, you're like, Claire Foy is in this, and you were like, and I that like why is I had to ask you if this was like pre- or post-fame Claire Foy, and you were like, and I don't know, she was definitely It's like mid.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a bit.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: She definitely knew better.
- 11:06SPEAKER_03: Oh, for sure, yeah.
- 11:08SPEAKER_03: And she's in she's in a significant role.
- 11:12SPEAKER_03: Like she doesn't she doesn't kind of come up too much, but she is a kind of pivotal character.
- 11:16SPEAKER_03: She's a pivotal character, absolutely.
- 11:18SPEAKER_03: Everybody keeps it.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's not in it much, but she is a pivotal character.
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, she keeps she keeps getting referenced all the time, and she is you know, she's she's giving it her full clairfoy.
- 11:29SPEAKER_03: Like, she's good.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: Um She's one of the better people in it.
- 11:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 11:35SPEAKER_03: But then yeah, there's this bit at the end that's like a kind of sort of post not really post-credits, but yeah, just like right at the end when she it's clearly setting up for her to lead into the next film, and it just definitely she was like, I'm not I'm not doing that, I'm the Queen now.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: Like Oh, do you think she turned it down as well?
- 11:54SPEAKER_03: Oh, I'm sure, I'm sure after seeing this she was like, Oh, I can't I can't do that again.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: Well, did you read about like what happened with this with like the sequels and everything?
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: No.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: So it said basically this movie made 15 million against a 30 million budget, and so first of all, like they didn't the studio didn't want to fund another one, and then Mark Waters, the director, was like, Oh, but the fans really want it, and they were like, Well, in that case, you can start an Indiegogo campaign to raise to raise one and a half million as proof of support, and then it raised 250,000.
- 12:34SPEAKER_02: Oh no.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: And so they were like, nope, not doing that.
- 12:41SPEAKER_03: Oh no, yeah, I mean, it's got a very, very hardcore, but very tiny zone based, really, very small.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: I mean, at the same time, 250,000 raised in a month back in 2014 on an indie go-get campaign.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: It's not bad.
- 12:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, actually, that is that's that is a lot.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: I feel like now they could have raised it.
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: If you're if you're trying to get Claire Foy back, you're gonna you're gonna need one and a half million.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: I did just read of the like Lucy Fry, who is like one of the main characters in this movie, she also didn't receive a callback the first time she auditioned.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: And then she sent in a self-tape and gone or got a callback.
- 13:27SPEAKER_03: Oh god.
- 13:29SPEAKER_03: Why did they why did they keep going with it?
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: And Sarah Highland auditioned over Skype.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: Honestly.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: It's just a mess.
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: Oh god, the more the more I learn about it, the more it just makes me feel so lucky that it exists.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: Dominic Sherwood was cast just a few days before filming started as well.
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: What chaos.
- 13:54SPEAKER_03: And then yeah, and then there's a there's a deleted scene that's got Anya Taylor Joy.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: I just saw that.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: I'm literally just reading that.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:01SPEAKER_03: What?
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: Which is she plays a character that's called Feeder Girl, and she just gets like she says like two words and gets bitten by someone.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: I didn't even s and then that yeah, that got cut.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 14:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:16SPEAKER_03: So lucky for her.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she couldn't.
- 14:20SPEAKER_03: Very few people don't know.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: She's saying I was not in it.
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, although this film doesn't seem to have done anything to hinder the careers of any of the people involved.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: No.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: Because as I found out, nobody has seen it.
- 14:31SPEAKER_03: No, that's the other thing.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't I don't know anyone other than you that has seen this movie.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: Like, I've never heard it talked about outside of like what you were saying about it.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: I d I barely remember it coming out.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: Um, I'm I'm sure it wasn't in any of our cinemas.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: Probably not.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: No.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to find out what it made in the UK.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: Um that 15 million it gross was worldwide as well.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: It wasn't even just it wasn't even the US, it was worldwide.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: That's so bad.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: Seven million in the US.
- 15:17SPEAKER_03: But there's just there's just so many Yeah.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: So many amazing bits in it that just kind of When did it actually come out?
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: Did it did they like release it in Janu like in January?
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Oh no, February.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: February 7th it came out.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: And then the UK came out in July.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: They were like they're really hoping for like a summer blockbuster.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: Oh, in a different universe, it could have happened.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: Just this could have been the new Twilight.
- 15:54SPEAKER_03: I think that was a problem as well.
- 15:55SPEAKER_03: This came on the end of the vampire craze.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, people were sick of the vampire stuff at this point.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: It was dying down.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think that's definitely like made a huge impact on the box office.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: It was like people were sick of it, sick of those Twilight uh movies and like True Blood and all those things.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: And this is kind of trying to be a parody of those as well.
- 16:17SPEAKER_03: But yeah, because it it it makes fun of the like, oh the sparkling thing, like we don't actually sparkle, and yeah.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: But it doesn't really work.
- 16:25SPEAKER_03: It's it doesn't really work because it's not um not particularly funny.
- 16:30SPEAKER_03: If you're gonna do a parody, then it's we've gotta make you laugh.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: I mean the the thing I read was that it was a cross between Twilight and Mean Girls.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: And but it doesn't do either of those things well enough to like to call it.
- 16:48SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: They don't really make a lot of impact.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:52SPEAKER_03: No, and because it's not really it it's sort of more of a red herring than the actual plot.
- 16:59SPEAKER_03: So it just the me all of the mean girls high school stuff happens and then it goes into a whole other realm of like of going back into being a vampire movie.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: Maybe that's one of the issues that it doesn't quite know what it wants to be.
- 17:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: Um but then like also I found all the Zoe Deutsch stuff, like so she's basically the lead essentially the lead, Rose.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: Yes, um, alongside Lucy Fry's uh Lysa.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: Lisa, right?
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: Lisa Um so that those are the two leads essentially, and like but look Zoe Zoe Deutsch's comedy stuff in this is really cringe.
- 17:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: It's like it's trying so hard to be funny, and it's oh it really cringe every time.
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's like they're yeah, they're kind of having a conversation around her, and she's like, I'm right here, folks, I'm right here.
- 17:55SPEAKER_03: It's just like such a weird injection of yeah, that just doesn't really fit in.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: And I I like her as well.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: I don't even have an issue with like her in like other stuff.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: It's just it's something about her in this really bothered me.
- 18:10unknown: Yeah.
- 18:11SPEAKER_03: It's I mean it the her relationship with the her um Dimitri with the kind of the head.
- 18:21SPEAKER_03: I don't really know what he is.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: He's a teacher, he's a like a bodyguard.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like teacher slash bodyguard.
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: Well, but the teacher's a kind of bodyguard because they're training them to like get a fight against these like vamp the what they call the uh the that's the other thing.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: That's the the names I hate them.
- 18:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:43SPEAKER_03: That's yeah, they actually they they do really, really annoy me.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: That's the one thing.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: Um the one thing about it.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: Um no, but their relationship, she's like she's so she must be 17.
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: Seventeen?
- 18:59SPEAKER_03: Something like that, yeah.
- 19:00SPEAKER_03: She's definitely under 18.
- 19:02SPEAKER_03: Yes, definitely.
- 19:04SPEAKER_03: He is at least 30.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:08SPEAKER_03: At least.
- 19:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: And there's like she's supposed to have like a school girl, she's almost got a schoolgirl crush on him.
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: That they're it's not really addressed that it's a problem.
- 19:21SPEAKER_03: There's like, oh no, the age difference, but it's not like you're a literal schoolgirl.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: It's yeah.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: But you are her teacher.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's that is there's really, really weird.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: Um the way they try and get around it is the the necklace thing with like the the spell that's been put like cast on it.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:43SPEAKER_03: Which is the the dialogue that happens in that scene is my favourite.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's bad.
- 19:50SPEAKER_03: It's so okay.
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: So she she uses the phrase sweet sassy melassie to express her delight at seeing this hot man.
- 20:03SPEAKER_03: And then it was like just after a school dance, so she's wearing this dress, she's wearing this necklace that's got a charm, uh kind of love charm that makes them want to fuck.
- 20:13SPEAKER_03: And he looks at her dress and he's like, I love your dress, let's burn it, and then he rips it off and just like throws it into the fire.
- 20:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 20:21SPEAKER_03: And she just spent the whole day out shopping for this dress that she was like obsessed with.
- 20:27SPEAKER_03: And now he's just like burnt it.
- 20:30SPEAKER_03: Then the charm wears off, and they're just like, Oh, okay, back to normal.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: Let's is it that the charm wears off, or is that he or that he pulls it off of the side?
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, he's like, no, this can't be this can't be right.
- 20:41SPEAKER_03: But you know, they've already crossed that line.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:45SPEAKER_03: In a big way.
- 20:46SPEAKER_03: They're about to fuck and then Yeah, like, yeah.
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: But just oh my god.
- 20:52SPEAKER_03: Sweet sassy malassie is is one of my favourite phrases.
- 20:55SPEAKER_03: I use it all the time now, genuinely.
- 20:57SPEAKER_03: Do you?
- 20:57SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 20:59SPEAKER_03: I've never heard it in any other context in this film.
- 21:02SPEAKER_03: It's not a thing.
- 21:03SPEAKER_03: It's not a thing.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: Um there's there's another thing that she's she does say, like, at one point, um, was it like Ducky or something like that, she calls it.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: It's like a reference to uh Pretty in Pink, which is her uh like the film that her dad directed.
- 21:19SPEAKER_03: Oh, is it?
- 21:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah Oh, I didn't make that connection.
- 21:23SPEAKER_03: Oh right.
- 21:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's a whole other thing.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: There's like the best friend, her male best friend, who's like the friend-zoned nice guy kind of trope, which is completely irrelevant.
- 21:34SPEAKER_03: That's just I don't really know where that goes.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: It has no removes to anything in this movie.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: Although uh maybe only because he helps her at one point.
- 21:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:46SPEAKER_03: But anyone else could have done that.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, anyone could have done that.
- 21:48SPEAKER_03: He doesn't need to be there at all.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: There's so many things where it's just like what what is the purpose of this character?
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: That they go they just go nowhere, and I don't know if it's just because to set up for like future.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Books or films or whatever, like but Yeah.
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: It just it it screams of a yeah an a book adaptation that they didn't want to cut anything out of.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: So they've just like kept in all of the side characters.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: I really wish you had read it now.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: Like so I I wish I wish we could read it.
- 22:16SPEAKER_03: I probably should.
- 22:16SPEAKER_03: I should read it.
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: I need to I need to do some.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: Oh I bet it's I bet it's trash.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 22:22SPEAKER_03: Oh I'm I'm sure it is.
- 22:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:29SPEAKER_03: I do I do wonder how much of how much of the book is in the film and like at who it's aimed at because there's a lot of like a lot of sexy stuff.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: Oh I have found some like book stuff.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: Book some book trivia.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: Um in the book Lysa and Rose, uh Lisa and Rose were living with a male human and borrowed his keys to a car to escape the Guardians.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: Uh in the books, Lisa was held miles away from the academy and it took hours to get to her.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: In the book, there's a part where Rose finds Lisa in the bathroom covered in blood, and in the books, Ray was named Ralph and he wasn't killed.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: Okay, so those are the differences.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: Everything else is the same.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: Oh wait, uh in the book.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Mr.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: Mr.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: Nagy was Rosen Lisa's art teacher who read the note aloud in class and he was killed by Natalie.
- 23:32SPEAKER_03: Oh right.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: I mean he's I don't know.
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: I didn't even know who that was when I No, that's what I mean.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: So they just changed they changed some names around and that seems to be about it, really.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: And like Yeah.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 23:50SPEAKER_03: But yeah, there's just there there's all of this like very like very sexual stuff, like very sexy storylines about like biting each other and then having sex while they're biting and like wiping their blood on the wall while they're having sex and all this kind of stuff.
- 24:09SPEAKER_03: That it just feels I I have no idea what the age audience was supposed to be for those books, like or what this is.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: It's a teen book, is it?
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: It has to be a teen book.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: But it's like they they they use the word fornicating, which all the time, which I found find really odd.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: Like kind of like quite shamey in a way.
- 24:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:37SPEAKER_03: And then there's a whole speech about slut shaming at the end, which doesn't fit in with anything there.
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, there's so much going on, I love it.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: There is this so much, yeah.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: They don't again, like to come from the director of Mean Girls make it's just it blows my mind and heathers as well.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: It just blows my mind to have like a slut-shaming thing.
- 24:56SPEAKER_03: It's yeah, it's it's wild.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: Um so I was just looking up the books.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: It's definitely it's it comes under young adult, uh, the books.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: So yeah, like teen like some kind of teenage thing.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: Um and then they came all six of them came out within like three years.
- 25:21SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: Wow, that's a busy writer.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: And there's a spin-off series with six other books.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: You've got a lot of reading to do.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: I have, I better get going on that.
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: And a graphic novel.
- 25:40SPEAKER_03: Amazing.
- 25:40SPEAKER_03: Well, I know what I'm doing over Christmas.
- 25:44SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 25:46SPEAKER_03: Not gonna talk to any of my family, I'm just gonna get into Vampire Academy.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: I bet they're like really short as well.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: But you can read them fast.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: They sold eight million copies in 35 countries as of 2013.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: Like prior to the movie even coming out.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: No wonder they wanted to make it.
- 26:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, yeah.
- 26:10SPEAKER_03: It makes it makes sense.
- 26:12SPEAKER_03: Um it's got everything there on paper.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:15SPEAKER_03: It's just it's it is it is baffling.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: Um so shall shall we talk through the movie then?
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: Let's let's kind of go through it and see.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: So okay.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: So it opens with the MIA song Bad Girls, in which uh which they're all discussing it in the car.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: And so it's like so who is it?
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: It's it's Lucy Fry's Lucy Fry's character, uh Lisa.
- 26:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so the Princess Lisa and her parents.
- 26:53SPEAKER_03: And her parents, right.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: And her brother, yeah.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: And they're all like they're talking about the song, Bad Girls, and she's she says something about liking it, and then the the dad's like, I actually and then the the brother hates it, and then the the dad's like, I like this song.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: Uh and then they have a crash, a car crash, and then uh Rose wakes up, right?
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: And then Rose wakes up, yeah.
- 27:20SPEAKER_03: Very, very abrupt start to the film.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: Like Again, this is the point, like like I said, I was very confused here.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: So when I'm making these notes, I'm like, I don't know what's going on.
- 27:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: Uh but I did write down there's like bad exposition here.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, really bad.
- 27:37SPEAKER_03: But yeah, so she wakes up and it it transpires that it was Lissa's dream, and they have some weird kind of like mind connection thing.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: So Rose is kind of like seeing everything from her.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: Not everything, but like she'll have visions of what what she sees.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: Which is weird that she has like visions of her dreams.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:02SPEAKER_03: And they they seem to come at just like random times.
- 28:05SPEAKER_03: And it's very it's um it's very unclear whether or not Lisa knows that it's happening because Rosa's just like having conversations with her in her head as though she's there, just like kind of chatting away while I'm gonna do it.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I it's not clear if she knows if it's happening at the same when it's when it's happening, but she does know about it because she does reference it later.
- 28:29SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: Because she's like, Oh, you're not you're not like seeing when I'm in the toilet or something, are you?
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: And she's like, No, not yet.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: Um But yeah, like you said, like it's not clear if they can just talk to each other while it's happening.
- 28:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because she um Rose, Zoe Deutsch's character, is just like constantly when those are happening, she's like giving it a kind of running commentary, being like, no, don't talk to him about that.
- 29:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 29:01SPEAKER_03: And oh god, no, that's really embarrassing.
- 29:04SPEAKER_03: And it's if anyone else was seeing it, she would literally just be like sitting there staring into space, just talking to herself.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: Just the eyes rolling back.
- 29:12SPEAKER_03: Everybody just everyone else just seems to be fine with that happening all the time.
- 29:15SPEAKER_03: Her just like going into a trance and just like nothing like that.
- 29:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but it's supposed to be it's supposed to be this like really mysterious thing that this connection that is really rare and people don't have that.
- 29:29SPEAKER_03: But she's literally just like around the school all the time going into chances and everyone's just like, yeah, okay, that seems normal.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: It's it's so strange.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: Like it makes like again, this I don't understand this movie.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: Like, I do not have 30 seconds into it.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'd like for the amount of exposition, I don't understand anything about it.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: Like um But it turns out that they escaped from the academy, the two of them.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: Um Rose took uh Lissa with her uh to but it's not it's not clear at this point why, is it?
- 30:09SPEAKER_03: No, no, it really isn't.
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: Um just something happened, they ran away.
- 30:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you find out.
- 30:14SPEAKER_03: Like a year ago or something.
- 30:15SPEAKER_03: It's been like a year.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, because they do ref I remember why later, yeah.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: Um But they uh so they escape from the academy, which is the school where they're all being like trained to Well, like the Moroi, which are the magic race, are there and then the then there's the Dom Darmpeer.
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: Sure, yeah.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: Which are the protectors And they're all half Moroi or just Zoe Deutsch?
- 30:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, I think they're like half she makes a really annoying comment about being able to drink blood or eat a hamburger.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: So yeah, she's like um yeah, half vampire, half normal.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I guess.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: And I think that's all of the Darnpier ones.
- 31:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: And then there's the Stragoi who are the bad vampires.
- 31:14unknown: Yeah.
- 31:14SPEAKER_03: Again, those are the ones who can't go out in the sunlight and will eat anyone.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: So everyone else can go out in the sunlight and are like not trying to eat everyone.
- 31:25SPEAKER_01: Th the the the Moroi seem to feed off of the Dampier ones.
- 31:31SPEAKER_03: Well, that's that's the that's the scandal.
- 31:35SPEAKER_03: That's what everybody gets all like slut shamey about, which is that's really, really unclear throughout the whole film why it's such a such a terrible thing.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: But like Because they're fine with it.
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, when they're when they're like um when they're off on their year-long sabbatical from Vampire Academy, Lissa is drinking Rose's blood, but there's like this weird kind of oh, I don't really like that energy, but also from it seems from from Rose.
- 32:10SPEAKER_03: She's uh it's like it's quite uncomfortable that they're doing that.
- 32:13SPEAKER_01: Oh I think Rose seemed to be fine with it for the most part.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: Well, she's like She kind of enjoys it when it's happening.
- 32:20SPEAKER_03: She yeah, exactly, she does.
- 32:21SPEAKER_03: She gets there's like an orgasm face going on.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: Right, yeah, yeah.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: And but but she's like, oh no, we don't want anybody to find out about this because you don't know what they'll say.
- 32:29SPEAKER_03: Right, right.
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: And then there's like the term blood whore thrown around.
- 32:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 32:36SPEAKER_03: Which is I don't know, apparently that whole situation is is dodgy.
- 32:42SPEAKER_03: Um but don't really know why.
- 32:45SPEAKER_03: That's never really explained.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: Just like well that's they were saving it for the second one.
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: Just an excuse for this that's just an excuse to talk about slut shaming, I think.
- 32:52unknown: Yeah.
- 32:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: Let me see who wrote it actually.
- 32:55SPEAKER_01: Was it the man who wrote the rip it or the original book?
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: Michelle No, it's not, it's a woman.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: Um interesting.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: I wonder if they do that in the books.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: Or if it was just the uh the writer of the s the screenplay that that added that in.
- 33:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:15SPEAKER_03: It's that is it is really that is very weird.
- 33:18SPEAKER_03: But yeah, so the the um the Moroi, they live off like human blood, right?
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: Classic vampire.
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, classic vampire stuff, but um because they like it seems like they they wheel in humans to like feed off of them.
- 33:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they've got like this weird kind of hospital ward where they have people come in to and then eat them and then send them home and they're like yeah, they they they say they're they're the ones who are the Twilight obsessed fans who offer themselves up to be Right, right.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: I actually missed that.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: This is where all of your friends who were obsessed with Twilight ended up.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: That's pretty funny actually.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: I've wrote down I wrote this down, it's got no relevance to like pretty much anything, but it just made me laugh because it's like she says at one point, uh goodbye Facebook, goodbye iPhone 5.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: Because when they would they have to go back to the academy.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: And yeah.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, I've completely skipped over something, but like it's it's just so dated already.
- 34:27SPEAKER_03: Oh, uh yeah, it really is.
- 34:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:29SPEAKER_03: She's hooking up with a guy as well, and he's like, What's a hashtag?
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: So didn't even hear that.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: It's that as well.
- 34:37SPEAKER_03: He's like, yeah, he's like trying to find it, he's trying to find that information from the outside.
- 34:41SPEAKER_03: And he's like, Did you have an iPhone?
- 34:43SPEAKER_03: What's a hashtag?
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, I remember him saying, Do you have did you have an iPhone?
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: Um But b yeah, sorry, sorry, I'm I skipped over something, but like basically like uh they the who is it that stops them?
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: Like in the when they first get sent back to the academy.
- 35:06SPEAKER_03: Who finds them in the it's the uh it's it's Dimitri, it's the um bodyguard teacher man.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: And he's yeah, he stops them and sends them.
- 35:19SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: They s and they save them from the uh the Stragoi who are like coming to attack them, don't they?
- 35:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: And they get sent back to the academy.
- 35:29SPEAKER_03: They get sent back to the academy, but Lissa has a weird thing about being called a vampire, apparently that's like uh she's like, oh no, don't call it the vampire academy.
- 35:37SPEAKER_03: That's like you know I hate that term.
- 35:39SPEAKER_03: It's what you are, mate.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:41SPEAKER_03: Own it.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: And yeah, so they they get sent back to the academy, and and Lissa's Liss Lys's about part of the uh royal family, you find out.
- 35:53SPEAKER_04: Mm-hmm.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: And she's in the mix to be like the queen at some point.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: Uh because of like the way the system has shifted, essentially.
- 36:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there's some weird kind of royalty like potluck situation where they have royal families, and like any of any of them could maybe be in line to the throne, but like not really clear who or how.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:19SPEAKER_03: But she is definitely one of them.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: And at the moment it's been ruled by Jo uh Jolie Richardson.
- 36:27SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 36:28SPEAKER_01: Not literally, but yeah.
- 36:31SPEAKER_03: Jolie Richardson the vampire, yes.
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: Queen Tatiana, the ruler of the Moroi and and Dampir's.
- 36:40SPEAKER_03: Yes, ruler of everyone.
- 36:43SPEAKER_03: Who appears twice, I think.
- 36:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and says like three words.
- 36:47SPEAKER_03: She says like a few words, and each time she just like comes down to the school to say how shit Lissa is.
- 36:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:54SPEAKER_03: She's like, this is here is all of the things that the princess has done wrong.
- 36:59SPEAKER_03: Bye.
- 37:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 37:00SPEAKER_03: And that's literally that is her role.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: It's probably her just being like, don't make her the queen after me.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, please.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: Anyone else.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: Um, and then there's uh they find out that Miss Carp, who was one of the teachers there, is gone.
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: And they don't know where she's gone.
- 37:26SPEAKER_03: Miss Carp, aka Claire Foy.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: Claire Foy.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: This is the first instance of like Claire Foy we find out about Claire Foy's character, but like she's gone.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: And she was like a favourite of the two of them.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: Like she's gone and they don't know where.
- 37:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and everyone's very cagey about it, and they don't want to give it a few.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: She disappeared after they disappe after they left, basically.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: And they nobody knows why.
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: Um well the teachers the teachers know why.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:51SPEAKER_03: But they won't they won't say.
- 37:55SPEAKER_01: Ooh.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: Mystery.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: It's a mystery, yeah.
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: Um and so they go, they oh, there's so much to this movie, but I know this is only the beginning.
- 38:11SPEAKER_02: There's so much.
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: There is so much more.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: Uh they they have training.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: This is where you've like see them training for like to the uh the uh Darm fears are training to like protect to learn how to protect the the others.
- 38:26SPEAKER_03: Um with their silver stakes.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:30SPEAKER_01: With silver stakes, which are the only things that can kill the Strogoi.
- 38:34unknown: Yeah.
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: Is that right?
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: It is right.
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: See, you know more than you think.
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: It's so complicated.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: This is the most confused I've been trying to find out.
- 38:45SPEAKER_03: Um I'm so glad that you um we now have this information because this is gonna be really useful for you later on.
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'm gonna lose my mind.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: This is the most confusing.
- 38:57SPEAKER_03: You put so much energy into working out what this film is all about, and then you can't use this information at any point.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: No, because they're not there's not even a sequel.
- 39:07SPEAKER_01: They've got no relevance to anything beyond this movie.
- 39:10SPEAKER_03: It's not even like in the vampire lore already, you think it's no, no, it's in absolutely nobody's favourite vampire movies lists.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: Um so she has a vision of Lissa talking to Christian at this point, Rose does.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: And there's like something going on between the two of them.
- 39:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Christian's like the bad boy of the school.
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: Uh who actually went on to date Sarah Highland for years.
- 39:48SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 39:48SPEAKER_03: Oh god.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they met on this movie.
- 39:52SPEAKER_03: They met on this oh yay, so this movie has uh it has borne some kind of They're not together anymore, but well, you know, I'm sure they had a great time.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: Could bond over the trauma of making Vampire Academy.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: Probably.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, so they but anyway, like talking to yeah, Lissa and Christian have like something going on.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: He's the bad boy of the school.
- 40:19SPEAKER_04: Mm-hmm.
- 40:20SPEAKER_01: Um why he's the bad boy?
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: I don't really know.
- 40:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, not really clear.
- 40:26SPEAKER_03: He's just like he's got brown hair.
- 40:29SPEAKER_03: And the cool ones, like the cool rich ones all have blonde hair.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: That's the the general yeah, it's it's not much more complex than that, I don't think.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: And then there's then there's like a running joke of Rose being thrown to the ground constantly.
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, everyone's always throwing her in the ground.
- 40:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: Which it's not funny ever.
- 40:56SPEAKER_03: No, it's not.
- 40:57SPEAKER_03: It keeps happening, and um she It's very slapstick.
- 41:01SPEAKER_03: It's just never injured in any way.
- 41:06SPEAKER_01: No.
- 41:07SPEAKER_03: Nobody is a single bruise or blemish.
- 41:10SPEAKER_03: Maybe it's a vampire thing, maybe they don't get bruises, who knows?
- 41:13SPEAKER_03: But yeah, everybody is very um spongy and resilient.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:20SPEAKER_01: Uh and then I wrote down like Jesse bites Rose, and I don't remember who Jesse is.
- 41:25SPEAKER_03: Jesse is one of the cool guys.
- 41:29SPEAKER_03: He's the one who she's hooking up with and is like, Right, right.
- 41:32SPEAKER_03: What's a hashtag?
- 41:33SPEAKER_03: Um but he yeah, so he's like he tries to bite her, doesn't he?
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: And she doesn't, she's not on board.
- 41:41SPEAKER_03: This is a whole thing about the like the the blood whore situation where it's like it's it's a sexy thing to do, but it's against the rules, and if anybody finds out about it, then then you will be shamed.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:59SPEAKER_03: But it doesn't really go further than that.
- 42:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: But it is it yeah, because we find out that there's the fox is killed, and then there's like is it a fox?
- 42:10SPEAKER_03: It's like some Yeah, there's like so there's animal.
- 42:16SPEAKER_03: Um because basically the yeah, the um the vampire, the kind of the main vampire ones will have like various powers.
- 42:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 42:27SPEAKER_03: And Lissa's power is turns out to be like healing.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 42:33SPEAKER_03: So somebody is leaving dead animals around the place trying to like her into healing stuff.
- 42:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: And uh and then there's like a message of blood on the wall uh that they discover.
- 42:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: Which is just like it's very creepy, but I can't remember what it says, but it says they spell like everywhere.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: No, no, what was it?
- 42:57SPEAKER_03: Beware.
- 42:58SPEAKER_03: Beware beware, but it's beware.
- 43:00SPEAKER_03: Spelt with you know, with as in where is it?
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's an And so they're like, oh, it has to be a kid, it has to be a kid here, because they spelled it wrong, that's what they said.
- 43:11SPEAKER_03: All of this stuff comes out of kind of yeah, out of nowhere in a little bit.
- 43:17SPEAKER_03: Like she's being terrorized by various people with like dead animals and blood and this kind of stuff.
- 43:28SPEAKER_03: And I mean, if you're listening to this and you're confused about what's happening, then this is exactly what is like what she's talking about.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: This is what I'm saying, like I am trying to explain it.
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: This is the most this is 100% the most confused I've ever been describing one of these movies on this podcast.
- 43:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so yeah, they're like all of these um these tests that Lissa gets to kind of kind of try and make her prove her power, I guess.
- 43:56SPEAKER_03: But while that's happening Her old boyfriend has got a new girlfriend at school and she's now been pushed out as the popular one and is being sort of bullied.
- 44:09SPEAKER_03: She thinks that's where all the dead animals are coming from, and then she decides just like suddenly that she's gonna be popular again and then becomes popular because that's how it works.
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: You just gotta decide you're popular in the world.
- 44:22SPEAKER_03: So I'm gonna do that now.
- 44:23SPEAKER_03: I've I've had enough of this not being popular.
- 44:25SPEAKER_03: I'm going to change all of that.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: Imagine if it were that.
- 44:28SPEAKER_03: And then suddenly she's the Queen Bee immediately.
- 44:30SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 44:31SPEAKER_01: So it's just a new the is this when you're talking about Mia and Andre, the photos.
- 44:37SPEAKER_03: Oh, Mia and Andre.
- 44:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Mia's the Mia is the new girl who has come in and usurped Lissa's Princess Lissa's place.
- 44:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:46SPEAKER_03: And turns out that she had some kind of relationship with Lissa's brother who died and is now like trying to get.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: I didn't realize that was her brother, because I I I wrote down I wrote those down and I was like, who is Andre?
- 45:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Andre was her brother.
- 45:06SPEAKER_03: She's going out with Lissa's ex-boyfriend, but she's still sort of obsessed with the brother who's dead.
- 45:17SPEAKER_03: And then it turns out that she's actually not anything evil.
- 45:22SPEAKER_03: She's just kind of a harmless girl who's insecure.
- 45:26SPEAKER_03: And that's like another message, another fun message for the film.
- 45:30SPEAKER_03: Oh no, sad people act out.
- 45:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 45:33SPEAKER_03: They don't all like maim boxes and hang them outside your door.
- 45:40SPEAKER_03: She's just sad.
- 45:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:43SPEAKER_01: Sometimes people can just be sad.
- 45:47SPEAKER_01: Uh but the they have a oh.
- 45:52SPEAKER_01: This really annoyed me, this scene, actually.
- 45:55SPEAKER_01: So there's a scene of De Stray attacking, and there's like a a like a proper battle and everything.
- 46:03SPEAKER_01: And then they wake up and it was just a dream.
- 46:05SPEAKER_02: And it was all a dream.
- 46:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 46:07SPEAKER_01: Oh, I hate that.
- 46:08SPEAKER_01: That makes me so angry when they do that.
- 46:11SPEAKER_03: That happens, yeah, those like maybe three times, I think.
- 46:16SPEAKER_03: They're like loads of drama and bloodshed, and then she wakes up and it was a nightmare.
- 46:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:22SPEAKER_01: It just reminded me of that scene in the in the I've never seen these movies, but I know I'm aware of this scene, which is in one of the Twilight movies where Yeah.
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: Do you know what I mean?
- 46:34SPEAKER_01: Oh, the last one.
- 46:35SPEAKER_01: The Michael Sheen one where he like.
- 46:38SPEAKER_03: Yes, where they have the entire film.
- 46:41SPEAKER_03: And they have this massive battle.
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: Is it the entire film?
- 46:44SPEAKER_03: It's it's yes, it's like an hour of the film, like at least.
- 46:48SPEAKER_03: It is so much.
- 46:49SPEAKER_01: I thought it was just one scene.
- 46:51SPEAKER_03: It is, it's one very, very, very, very long scene.
- 46:54SPEAKER_03: And then she's like, that's that's what will happen if you take this path.
- 47:00unknown: No.
- 47:02SPEAKER_03: Okay, well then I won't do that.
- 47:03SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 47:05SPEAKER_01: I didn't realise it was a whole like really long thing.
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: I thought it was just like a little a little scene in the movie, even that annoyed me.
- 47:12SPEAKER_03: No, it's massive.
- 47:13SPEAKER_03: It's a huge scene, every single person dies, and then it was all a dream.
- 47:19SPEAKER_03: And then he it is literally like, yeah, this is what is gonna happen if you decide to do this.
- 47:23SPEAKER_03: And Michael Sheen's like, okay, fine, then I will not do that, I will go home, and then everybody goes home.
- 47:30SPEAKER_01: It's not even in the books, is it?
- 47:32SPEAKER_01: That's what I remember people's like confused.
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: Is it not?
- 47:34SPEAKER_01: No, that's what people were saying.
- 47:35SPEAKER_01: They were like, Why is because people were freaking out apparently when it came up because they're like, wait, you've changed so much about this, and then it's just like not even and then it doesn't count towards anything.
- 47:45SPEAKER_03: That is what happens when you split a book into two massively long movies.
- 47:49SPEAKER_03: You have to create like a fantasy mind battle.
- 47:54SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 47:55SPEAKER_03: I didn't know that wasn't in the books.
- 47:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, apparently people were freaking out during the when it came up.
- 48:00SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm sure they were.
- 48:02SPEAKER_03: You know, there's the vampire fans are very dedicated.
- 48:08SPEAKER_01: But I've never seen it, but I just remember that because that goes around online all the time because it's just like so ridiculous.
- 48:13SPEAKER_03: It is ridiculous, it's infuriating.
- 48:16SPEAKER_03: It's like it goes against the the number one rule of writing stuff.
- 48:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 48:21SPEAKER_03: A hundred percent of the first thing you learn.
- 48:24SPEAKER_03: Don't do and it was all a dream.
- 48:27SPEAKER_03: But yeah, there's a lot of and it was all a dream bits in in this film.
- 48:32SPEAKER_03: So many.
- 48:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:35SPEAKER_01: And but then she has a vision about Miss Carp who tells her like you won't know you won't remember any of this stuff until it's time to remember it.
- 48:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 48:49SPEAKER_03: She's like, oh, here's some here's some really useful information that will save your life.
- 48:54SPEAKER_03: Um now forget all of that.
- 48:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 48:57SPEAKER_03: And leave and never come back.
- 49:00SPEAKER_03: And you'll remember all of this when it's the right time to remember it, which actually turns out to be like a lot later than it should have been.
- 49:08SPEAKER_03: Like she should have known this earlier, and it would have, you know, none of this would have happened.
- 49:13SPEAKER_03: So thanks, Claire Foy.
- 49:15SPEAKER_03: You fucked it.
- 49:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:17SPEAKER_01: Maybe intentionally, given like what we did.
- 49:20SPEAKER_03: Well, maybe.
- 49:22SPEAKER_03: Ooh, good insight there.
- 49:27SPEAKER_03: But yeah, all of this important information about how she's like got this special power and people want to exploit it.
- 49:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:34SPEAKER_03: And the enemies are inside the walls, so you've got to run away, kind of thing.
- 49:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:38SPEAKER_01: So that you learn that's that's why they leave in the first place, and you learn that approximately an hour and a half into the but you also learn that like at this point where like this is the most she says the most effective way to be uh for pain to go is to become a Stragoy.
- 49:59SPEAKER_03: Mmm, yeah.
- 50:00SPEAKER_03: So she's so plagued, plagued by this this power that she has.
- 50:05SPEAKER_03: She has the same power as Princess Lissa.
- 50:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 50:08SPEAKER_03: So plagued by it that she turns herself into an evil vampire.
- 50:12SPEAKER_01: Because you see her like Is this is this the point where you see her in the the hospital?
- 50:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and she's out eating people and chucking people about.
- 50:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 50:21SPEAKER_03: She's got red eyes now, which means that she's bad.
- 50:24SPEAKER_01: I actually quite like that scene.
- 50:25SPEAKER_01: That it was it was the first, like, kind of exciting bit in the movie.
- 50:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 50:33SPEAKER_03: How dare you! Which is like, oh yeah, no, it's it is the first it's it's like a surprisingly It's quite violent.
- 50:42SPEAKER_03: Surprising bit.
- 50:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 50:44SPEAKER_03: It's it's the first bit that you're like, okay.
- 50:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 50:49SPEAKER_03: I see I see how this happened.
- 50:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 50:52SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, so you learn she had a breakdown basically and like tried to and then she became a strigoy and like ran away.
- 51:00SPEAKER_01: Um and then uh so Christian and Rose, because so Rose enlists Christian to help her, basically.
- 51:08SPEAKER_01: Um they go like reading a load of like material in the library, and then Lissa just like sees them coming out of the library and gets jealous.
- 51:20SPEAKER_03: She gets jealous, she's like, no, you've been going behind my back with this guy who actually they have more chemistry than Lissa has with Lisa has no chemistry with anyone.
- 51:34SPEAKER_01: I don't think she's a very good actress.
- 51:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 51:39SPEAKER_03: They yeah, she's like she yeah, accuses them of of going behind her back and you know, all this stuff.
- 51:47SPEAKER_01: Um And because of that, she she like forms a hole and she like break makes a hole in the ground that Rose walks into and like supposed to be.
- 51:57SPEAKER_01: And breaks her ankle.
- 51:58SPEAKER_03: Well, this that bit is is horrible.
- 52:03SPEAKER_01: It's disgusting.
- 52:04SPEAKER_03: I hate it.
- 52:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it doesn't need to be that graphic.
- 52:07SPEAKER_03: Like you can see her bone coming out of her leg.
- 52:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 52:10SPEAKER_03: And it's awful.
- 52:12SPEAKER_03: And then then she ends up in hospital and Lissa basically has healed her.
- 52:16SPEAKER_03: Has like given all of her energy to heal her.
- 52:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 52:20SPEAKER_01: Um and then they immediately like leave it at that and just like move on.
- 52:25SPEAKER_03: Okay, yeah, cool, great, thanks.
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: Because there's a dance coming up.
- 52:30SPEAKER_03: There's a dance! Yeah, so now we're back to the high school stuff.
- 52:35SPEAKER_03: Um oh yeah, and then they're they're like their friend Natalie, who's Sarah Highland.
- 52:41SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 52:41SPEAKER_03: Um, who is like she's the classic um nerdy, unattractive schoolgirl who's Nathan just has glasses.
- 52:50SPEAKER_03: She's a nerdy virgin, but she's conventionally attractive with glasses.
- 52:55SPEAKER_03: Um and like her hair's curly or something.
- 52:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they make her hair curly just to like Yeah, just to add to all of those things that you're supposed to think are make you a nerd.
- 53:06SPEAKER_03: Um, and they her dad is like this I think he's also in line to be one of the royal people from like a different family.
- 53:16SPEAKER_01: Doesn't he like run the he's like the the the principal or something, isn't he?
- 53:21SPEAKER_03: No, but he's like some weird kind of very involved board member.
- 53:25SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 53:25SPEAKER_03: Like appears.
- 53:26SPEAKER_03: I thought he was the principal.
- 53:30SPEAKER_03: Um no, the principal is like this really creepy woman who just like keeps trying to bite everybody.
- 53:38SPEAKER_01: I don't remember her at all.
- 53:41SPEAKER_03: She's also quite famous.
- 53:43SPEAKER_03: She's played by Olga Korialenko.
- 53:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, I do remember Olga Koriolanko.
- 53:48SPEAKER_01: I don't remember her being the principal.
- 53:51SPEAKER_03: Well, exactly, because she's just like some kind of she's like a very beautiful vampire just going around like threatening to bite her.
- 53:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I wasn't entirely sure who she was, to be honest.
- 53:59SPEAKER_01: I was just she was just like there.
- 54:01SPEAKER_01: She's a principal.
- 54:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 54:03SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, so so this guy who is famous actor Gabriel Byrne.
- 54:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 54:11SPEAKER_03: Um, he is he plays the Natalie, the nerdy girl's dad.
- 54:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 54:16SPEAKER_03: Um and he's got this disease, which is apparently you're supposed to know what it is, but it's like it basically makes you like frail.
- 54:25SPEAKER_03: Um and he takes them shopping because he's like got loads and loads of money.
- 54:32SPEAKER_03: So after all of this stress, you deserve what every girl wants to do when they're stressed is go shopping.
- 54:39SPEAKER_03: Yay! Um, so they go shopping and they find like this really kind of basic black dress that she's gets really obsessed over.
- 54:52SPEAKER_03: Like that's one of the things that I'm like, okay, come on.
- 54:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:55SPEAKER_03: It's like it's it's just a it's just like a standard dress.
- 55:00SPEAKER_03: It's just a standard dress, and she's like, that's the best dress I've ever seen.
- 55:04SPEAKER_03: Anyway, he buys them all of these clothes for the dance.
- 55:08SPEAKER_03: Because obviously there has to be a prom in any high school film.
- 55:13SPEAKER_01: It just comes out of nowhere.
- 55:16SPEAKER_03: Out of nowhere.
- 55:19SPEAKER_03: There doesn't it doesn't even yeah.
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: There's no reference to it until it happens.
- 55:23SPEAKER_03: It's not the end of the year, it's not like the end of term, it's not, you know, there's not as like a spring formal.
- 55:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 55:28SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, okay.
- 55:30SPEAKER_03: This is we're nearing the end of the film, we should probably put dance in it.
- 55:35SPEAKER_01: So they go basically they go to the dance and they learn about like blood splashing, which is viral.
- 55:46SPEAKER_03: It's gross.
- 55:47SPEAKER_03: So one of the guys that she was hooking up with that Rose was hooking up with, who was obsessed with hashtags, him and because this is so complicated, him and the new girlfriend of Lyssa's ex-boyfriend, who also is obsessed with her brother, they had sex while they were having sex, they cut themselves and spread their blood on the wall.
- 56:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:17SPEAKER_01: Which they call blood splashing.
- 56:19SPEAKER_03: Which they call blood splashing, and apparently that is like a cool new thing among the upper classes of vampires.
- 56:27SPEAKER_01: I imagine it's supposed to be some like kind of reference to like sex and drugs.
- 56:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 56:35SPEAKER_03: It's so it's just so gross.
- 56:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's disgusting.
- 56:39SPEAKER_03: Um then oh yeah, and then that's done with.
- 56:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's that's that that's it.
- 56:44SPEAKER_03: And they draw a line under that and move on.
- 56:46SPEAKER_01: They move on immediately.
- 56:47SPEAKER_01: And they have uh I can't remember why, but she kisses Mason helps her with something.
- 56:53SPEAKER_03: And yes, the nice guy, the nice guy friends.
- 56:57SPEAKER_01: The nice guy friends.
- 56:59SPEAKER_03: Um friend zone.
- 57:01SPEAKER_01: So she kisses him but on the cheek.
- 57:04SPEAKER_03: On the cheek, and he's like, always the cheek.
- 57:08SPEAKER_03: Just yeah.
- 57:09SPEAKER_03: Oh god, it's so embarrassing.
- 57:11SPEAKER_01: And then uh Christian takes Lisa what what did I write here?
- 57:18SPEAKER_01: Rose and what I don't know I don't know what I'm writing here.
- 57:20SPEAKER_01: Christian takes Lissa.
- 57:22SPEAKER_01: I've got Oh he takes her, yeah, he kidnaps her.
- 57:25SPEAKER_01: That's what I mean.
- 57:26SPEAKER_03: Oh no, he doesn't kidnap her.
- 57:28SPEAKER_01: Doesn't he?
- 57:28SPEAKER_03: No, they go off to make out somewhere, and then they're both kidnapped.
- 57:34SPEAKER_01: Um That's right.
- 57:35SPEAKER_03: They're both kidnapped by Gabriel Byrne.
- 57:38SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 57:39SPEAKER_03: Um, the the dad with the disease who um and all the money um who takes them to his mansion and transpires that he was the guy who was leaving all of the dead animals around the place.
- 57:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 57:55SPEAKER_03: Um because he wants her to heal him from his terrible disease.
- 58:00SPEAKER_03: Presumably so he can descend to the throne?
- 58:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:04SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 58:05SPEAKER_01: That's gotta be what it is.
- 58:06SPEAKER_03: I think that is implied, but it's not actually ever said.
- 58:12SPEAKER_01: Um while all this is going on though, the um This is that Rose and Dimitri scene.
- 58:19SPEAKER_03: This is the sweet sma sweet sassy malassie happening in that guy.
- 58:23SPEAKER_03: The best bit.
- 58:24SPEAKER_03: I love it so much.
- 58:25SPEAKER_01: Um Best line in the your favourite line in the like worst scene.
- 58:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, favourite line.
- 58:31SPEAKER_03: And it's it it I d it's it's impossible to uh to portray this this scene through words.
- 58:41SPEAKER_03: Because I actually don't I don't think that we've mentioned yet just how terrible Dimitri's acting is.
- 58:49SPEAKER_01: Oh, I wrote that down, but yeah, like I didn't say it, we haven't brought it up because it's just so bad.
- 58:54SPEAKER_03: It's like it there's that and there's not a single ounce of emotion in any of the words he's saying at all.
- 59:00SPEAKER_03: Like I don't know there's another there's another great bit where he's like, I thought we would practice here away from there.
- 59:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 59:08SPEAKER_03: Keep the drama away from here over there.
- 59:11SPEAKER_03: Literally, that's what it sounds like.
- 59:12SPEAKER_03: So this scene where they're trying to get all sexy, she's like giving it all that.
- 59:17SPEAKER_01: Because she's so full of like energy and emotion and everything as well.
- 59:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it just doesn't they don't play off each other well at all.
- 59:25SPEAKER_03: He's like, what do you want?
- 59:27SPEAKER_03: And she's like, Oh, I wanna get busy, and he's like then suddenly is is like trying to be the sexy guy, and but it's just it's just so painful to watch him being like oh I can't believe I can't believe we're doing this and then and then ripping her dress off and throwing it into the fire just randomly.
- 59:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:54SPEAKER_01: I d it's I think it's just trying to be funny, it doesn't work.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_03: I just I don't know.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_03: I I understand it.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_03: I don't get the logic.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_03: Because it's not sexy either.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_00: No, it's not.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_03: Like they're taking their clothes off, but there ain't nothing sexy about it.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_03: It's just really creepy and weird.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_01: What's funny is when she first walks in on him and he's like so and so attracted to him suddenly, he's just lying there in his pajamas as well.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_02: He's just like he's just reading on the bed, just like in his trackies, and she's like, sweet sassy malazi, I want some of that.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_01: But I get that she's I get there's a charm on her to like.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's the that's the charm.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's just funny, that's the the love charm.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_03: But yeah, at some point he notices there's a love charm and rips it off, and then they're like, Okay, back to business.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we need to go and save the princess now.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and uh yeah, she gets just like they realise and she goes, We have to hurry.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_03: And she's yeah, he's he realizes and he's like, No, oh that's so terrible, not love charms, and she's like, Okay, just forget about it, let's go now.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_03: Bye, let's hurry.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_03: And it's so jarring, it's really jarring.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_01: It's such a weird scene, it's so, so strange.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, Vic Victor, this is when like we yeah, we find out Victor wants uh Lissa to heal him.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_03: Uh I genuinely forgot I didn't know that his name was Victor.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_03: Well, I wrote down Victor's how many times I've seen him.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_03: I didn't have it right written.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_03: I I like I I didn't know what his name was.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_03: He's called Victor.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_00: Victor Dash Victor dies.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he wants to be healed, but it will like drain her life force basically.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_01: And uh but he has like these wolves as well.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_03: The psi hounds.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_01: The hounds, yes.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_03: I don't know why they're called psi hounds, whatever that means.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_03: They say it as though this is like uh I don't know, maybe I don't know enough about like vampire cannon.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_03: Just call it just like call it a wolf.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_03: Or just like a hound, or whatever cyhound is.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_03: They've got it's this really weird CGI thing.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_03: It's awful.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_03: There isn't any other CGI.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_03: Like this is this is it.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_03: And they're just like these really big dogs that come along and attack them.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_03: Out of nowhere.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_00: It makes no sense.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_01: Like I the thing is as well.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_01: So if like the fact that this movie cost 30 million Did they s yeah, where did that money go?
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_01: Where's the where's the money gone?
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_01: Because like nothing happen it's like it's very basic setups and everything.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_01: There's no like extravagant scenes in this movie.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_03: No, and there isn't.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_01: And then the the CGI for those Psyhounds is terrible.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_01: So like where is the money?
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_01: Where'd the money go?
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_03: Claire Foy.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_03: Claire Foy got all of the money.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_03: Well um Yeah, and the bit with like with the dogs as well, they just don't really they're so inconsequential.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_03: They're on the screen for like a couple of minutes, they get burnt to a crisp by somebody with firepowers, and and it's like it's sort of set up as being that whole bit where they go to rescue Lissa is set up as being like the ending set piece, and you're like, okay, they've yeah, we know who the villain is, yeah, we have got the princess back, the film's probably gonna end now.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and then it doesn't, then they add another ending after that, which it's just like it could it it genuinely that could have been the end of the film, yeah.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_03: 100%.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_03: Um before we go on to the next bit though, there is a quote from one of the previous scenes which I wrote down because I I love it.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_01: I wonder if it's the same one that I wrote down.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_03: I hope so.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_03: One of um Victor's henchmen.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_03: Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_03: When he is um he comes face to face with Dimitri, the um the bodyguard teacher man, um, who is he's known as being the best in the land at that job.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_03: And he says, he's obviously got he's got a a complex about it.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_03: Um this guy says they say Dimitri is a god.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_03: Well, I'm an atheist, an atheist with a big gun.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_02: Which, oh my god.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_01: I wrote it down as well because I was like, I can't believe you just said that.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_03: His gun's not even that big, anyway.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_03: And he's such a minor character.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_03: He's I'm like he has like one other line at the beginning, and then like that is it, and then he comes out with this gold dust.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, absolute clanger.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_01: It's one of the only lines.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_01: I'm so glad he wrote that down as well.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's one of the only lines.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_03: I'm so glad that you that jumped out to you, because wow.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_01: I truly could not believe he said that.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_03: It's just it's stupid.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_01: Oh, because I was just like, who are you as well?
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't I don't know.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, literally, who who are you?
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_03: What what is your role in this apart from apparently having developed a complex about this guy in the last 30 seconds because we've never heard of you before.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_01: But yeah, they s but basically he shoots Christian, doesn't he?
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_03: Okay, sure.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_03: I I sort of Yeah.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that whole thing that whole like sequence is a bit of a blur in my mind.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_03: But yeah, he shoots him.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_03: Uh this Oh yeah, because then
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_01: Then Lissa then yeah, then they then there's this fire on the hounds.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he like he sets the hounds on fire, Lissa heals him, and then they all pass out.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_00: And they find and they find out that uh Victor starts 10.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_03: And then they go back.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they they go back.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_03: They get arrested.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_03: Victor gets arrested.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_03: And there's like the whole they like they wrap it all up with the principal.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_03: She's like, yes, we've arrested Victor.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_03: He's downstairs, he is in one of the cells, and you're like, great, this is fantastic.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_03: Well done.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_03: Good film, everybody.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_03: It's time to go home.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_03: And then there's just there is another 15 minutes.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_03: Where Rose goes down because she wants to talk to him.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_01: And she finds out that uh they shouldn't basically like when there was the crash.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_01: Was it the crash?
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they shouldn't have survived.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_03: Right at the beginning.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, at the very beginning, the car crashed.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_03: They should have died.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_03: But but somehow Lissa's power came out and she saved them both, and it that was how they got their weird kind of connection thing.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_03: Um which makes her special.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_01: Kissed and it says like you were kissed by the shadows or something.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_03: Shadow kissed.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_03: Shadow kissed Rose is what he calls her.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_03: Um again, doesn't really matter.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_03: I feel like it probably matters in the next film.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_01: I bet it's like a setup.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_01: I bet this feels like entire setup stuff for like the whole film is set up for the future sequels.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_03: Um no, it really, really is.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_01: But this is this is where we get a twist, which is that we turn turns out Natalie is a Stragoi.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_03: Turns out, yeah, Natalie, poor nerdy Natalie, who had glasses, made herself into a bad, evil Stragoy vampire because she loves her dad.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_03: And now she doesn't have to wear glasses anymore, Daddy.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_03: She would do anything for Daddy.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_03: Um now she doesn't have glasses.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, she can see because she can see it has perfected her vision and made her skin nice.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_03: And her hair's probably more shiny as well.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_03: Because you know.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_01: I love that it says she's it's made her skin nice, but she's like pale as anything and like bleeding from the eyes.
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and also she had a perfect skin beforehand anyway.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_03: Like flawless, not a spot in sight.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_01: She looks she looks sick right now, and then she's like, Yeah, she she is she's a mess.
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_03: She's got blood like flowing down her front, like out of her mouth from all of the people that she's just murdered.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_03: She's like, Yay! I might be dead, but I'm the happiest I've ever been.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_03: And then obviously Rose gets she gets thrown around a lot because she doesn't have the guts to kill one of her friends.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_01: Well she's about to kill her with the stake with the silver stake, and then Natalie's like, Rose.
- 1:09:09SPEAKER_03: Uh oh yeah, she does a little she pretends that she's Yeah.
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_01: So Dimitri has to kill her.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, he appears.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_03: He appears at some point.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he just like shows up.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_03: Jumps in and yeah, at the opportune moment.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_03: Obviously.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_03: Um He he yeah, he jumps down and and kills her, and then that's that whole bit.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_03: And then that other little random appendix that we didn't really need.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_01: And then then it cuts to Alyssa declaring her was it her major?
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_01: What is it?
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_01: Like to the to the crowd of like students.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, she gives a speech.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, the queen turns up again.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_03: Jolie Richardson turns up, and again is like, this girl is shit.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:10:01SPEAKER_03: She's rubbish.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_03: She's gonna be a terrible queen.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_03: You need to get your act together, but this time Lissa's like, no, I'm not gonna take that.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_03: And she gives a really sincere speech where she declares that she is like this yeah, healer person.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and says a load of stuff about how blood is death and blood is life, and there's gonna be no more bad blood.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_03: No more bad blood.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_03: That's what they said.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_03: Let's end slut shaming.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_03: And yeah, the most confusing speech of all time.
- 1:10:34unknown: Yeah.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_01: And then Oh, and then there's the final scene.
- 1:10:39SPEAKER_01: Oh no, f one of the final two scenes, because there's another there's like an appendix thing, but with Rose and Dimitri where they're talking, and he's like, I can't be with you.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_01: And he says, and she says, Your reasons for not loving me make me love you more.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_00: Which Like what kind of message?
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what a message.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_03: I also don't understand what she's trying to say either.
- 1:11:05SPEAKER_03: Like it's a really the message is is terrible.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_03: Also, he's like, he's like, it's not even it's not even about the age thing.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_03: Like the age thing doesn't even bother me.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_03: Like, first of all, what what to give the fuck?
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_03: Okay, apparently we're fine with with this like massive, really creepy age difference.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_03: Um then yeah.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_01: But then and then she like goes to kiss him but flips him instead.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_01: So it's that's supposed to be the joke.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_03: But they would have kissed.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_03: He would have kissed her.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he was ready to kiss her.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_03: She's a child.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_03: And then after that, she does this really creepy like she skips away, yeah, and like in her school uniform, like skipping with her hands behind her back, like uh a primary school kid.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_03: And he's just like, ah, how sweet.
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_02: Like, no, no, no, it's creepy as fuck.
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:12:10SPEAKER_01: And then if the final scene, it like fa like oh no, she sees the uh she's the crow, doesn't she?
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_01: And she thinks it's uh do you think that's her like what is it supposed to be for her?
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_01: It's like a I don't know, something for her, specifically.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_01: I don't really know.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_03: It's not like Lissa brought the crow back from the dead at some point during the film, and then I don't know.
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_01: And then the crow flies away and then it flies to the it flies over and it like you see the this cave, and in the cave is uh Miss Carp, who is now a vampire, and there's like loads of vampires in there with her.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's Claire Foy has has brought together an army of evil vampires, of Stragoys in this cave, um, getting ready to do something.
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_03: Um probably something bad and violent, but we will never know.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_01: You will once you read the books at Christmas.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_03: I yes, I will know, and I will I will get the next film made if it's a lot to read it.
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_03: Can you raise can you raise one and a half million?
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_03: I I reckon I could do it.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_03: I think I could do it.
- 1:13:29SPEAKER_03: I just need to get a fact that you can't even get one one like on Twitter when you mention it.
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_03: I need one like on those tweets.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_03: Please.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_01: But yeah, that's the end of the that's the end of the movie.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_01: Again, like it's all it's all set up for like another movie that doesn't exist.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_03: But Claire Foy does, she gets a last shot.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_03: She does.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_01: Claire Foy gets the last shot.
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_01: But she's in the cast list on Wikipedia, it's got the entire cast list, and then it says, additionally, Claire Foy portrays Sonia Carv.
- 1:14:07SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 1:14:08SPEAKER_03: I wonder if she's done like a sweep of the internet.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_03: She's got her her team to do a sweep to just like get her taken off as many of these films as possible.
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_01: I bet I bet that's happened.
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_03: So I respect her for it.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_03: She did a great job, in my opinion.
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think she was probably the best character in it.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_01: She's the most interesting character to me.
- 1:14:32SPEAKER_01: Um whether that's because she was barely in it and didn't have time to like ruin any part of her character, maybe, but I don't know.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_03: Well she was in the she was in that deleted scene with Anya Taylor Joy that they cut out.
- 1:14:45SPEAKER_03: So she had another whole scene that maybe that's why, maybe that's why she um she distanced herself from it.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_03: Because she wasn't in more of it.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_03: Maybe.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_03: She wanted to be the main part and they betrayed her.
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_01: What was she in before this?
- 1:15:05SPEAKER_01: Um I mean it was one of her first films.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_01: And then 20 years.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_01: It was only her third film.
- 1:15:17SPEAKER_03: Has she been in big ones?
- 1:15:20SPEAKER_01: She was in Season of the Witch, Wreckers, and then Vampire Academy.
- 1:15:26SPEAKER_03: Oh, interesting.
- 1:15:28SPEAKER_01: I don't not entirely maybe this was her breakout role.
- 1:15:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:15:34SPEAKER_01: And then like, I'm looking at the TV show.
- 1:15:36SPEAKER_01: She was she was in TV for a little bit, but yeah.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_01: She did more TV stuff, I guess.
- 1:15:43SPEAKER_01: And then The Crown in 2016, which really took off.
- 1:15:49SPEAKER_03: Yes, I've heard of it.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_01: No, I mean she was in Lit Little Dorrit in 2008.
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_01: 14 episodes.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_01: And upstairs, downstairs.
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:16:05SPEAKER_03: I mean Oh, yeah, so this was this was the big one.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_03: Seems like this was the name.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:16:11SPEAKER_01: Everyone's like, oh, Claire Foy from from Vampire Academy.
- 1:16:18SPEAKER_01: When they announced the crown, they're like, the girl from uh Claire Foy or Vampire Academy.
- 1:16:24SPEAKER_03: They I bet when she auditioned, she didn't even audition for the the crown vampire academy.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_03: They just watched this and they were like, yeah, that's it, that's Queen Elizabeth II.
- 1:16:36SPEAKER_01: Like, we've seen the potential.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_01: They just watched the.
- 1:16:41SPEAKER_03: I do stand by it though.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_03: I think she is good in this film.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_01: I think she's good in this film.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I don't disagree with that.
- 1:16:47SPEAKER_01: I don't think the film is good, but I think she's good in it.
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_01: I also don't think anyone else is good in this.
- 1:16:56SPEAKER_02: Um trying to think of one of them.
- 1:17:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, even Gabriel Byrne could have been good in this and he's not.
- 1:17:07SPEAKER_03: No, but he does a really great bit where he um he gets healed when just after he gets healed and he like his he ages down when he's looking in a mirror and he just like gives a really big creepy smile.
- 1:17:22SPEAKER_01: I mean he is a when you think of him he is a proper acting.
- 1:17:26SPEAKER_03: Some really great physical acting there.
- 1:17:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:17:28SPEAKER_03: Well done, Gabriel.
- 1:17:31SPEAKER_01: Um okay, so like other than what we've discussed, like what is your like thoughts about like why you love this so much?
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_01: Like why do you think why do you think it's good?
- 1:17:42SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_03: I I don't know whether I would say I think it's good or not.
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_03: That is that is definitely up for discussion.
- 1:17:53SPEAKER_03: But I I just think that it does tick every single box of like vampire and teen movie films that I love.
- 1:18:09SPEAKER_03: And that is like that is the good and the bad about it.
- 1:18:12SPEAKER_03: Like it ticks every single box and it shouldn't.
- 1:18:14SPEAKER_01: It should maybe two minutes.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_03: It should tick maybe three or four and it just does all of them at the same time.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_03: It's incredibly ambitious.
- 1:18:22SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:18:23SPEAKER_03: Um it the plot is so complicated.
- 1:18:29SPEAKER_03: And it just, you know, it makes you work for it.
- 1:18:32SPEAKER_01: It does.
- 1:18:33SPEAKER_03: It makes you work for it.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_03: I respect that, you know.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_03: I think it is it's it's it's got a really good way of of vetting its fans, you know.
- 1:18:45SPEAKER_03: You can't you can't really enjoy it unless you try really hard.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_01: What a sell.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_03: And I have tried.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_01: Um it's got at least two fans with you and your former flat.
- 1:18:58SPEAKER_03: Me and my friend, yeah, me and Carmen, we love it.
- 1:19:01SPEAKER_03: Um we have definitely kept it on the streaming sites every time it comes on.
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_03: It it's very rarely.
- 1:19:10SPEAKER_01: Does it constantly like get taken down from the streaming sites and get put back up?
- 1:19:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah, all the time.
- 1:19:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it's not it's not on there all the time, but every time it is.
- 1:19:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's not on there at the moment.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_03: No, no.
- 1:19:21SPEAKER_03: Every time it's on, we watch it.
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_03: We'll be like Have you seen it?
- 1:19:26SPEAKER_03: Fuck on Netflix.
- 1:19:27SPEAKER_03: Let's get together every time.
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_01: Is it Netflix that usually gets added to?
- 1:19:30SPEAKER_03: I think, yeah, it is Netflix.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_03: That's where you can find it, guys, if you want to watch it.
- 1:19:35SPEAKER_01: Not right now.
- 1:19:36SPEAKER_03: But you'll have to set up an alert because you won't be able to find it for another six months.
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_01: It's probably so cheap to put it on there as well.
- 1:19:44SPEAKER_03: Oh god, yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:47SPEAKER_03: But it's it's definitely like it's one of those sentimental things for me.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_03: I think it it's like it's definitely a a film that you talk the entire way through.
- 1:20:00SPEAKER_03: Like you comment, you commentate on all of it, every single thing that's happening.
- 1:20:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I hate that.
- 1:20:05SPEAKER_03: Like, I I don't like people talking in films.
- 1:20:07SPEAKER_03: I don't like people like even touching me when I'm watching something.
- 1:20:10SPEAKER_03: I'm like, leave me alone, I'm gonna enjoy this myself.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but with films like this, you have to comment on absolutely everything that's happening, and I just I love that about it.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's like a proper yeah, it's it's such a great way to spend time with somebody watching a film like that.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_03: It's just it's the only way you can watch this, really.
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, no, you can't you cannot get through it in silence.
- 1:20:35SPEAKER_01: I well, I was gonna say, like, the w when I was watching it last night, I got to a point I was like, oh god, how am I gonna get through this movie?
- 1:20:45SPEAKER_01: And I looked at the time and I was 20 minutes in.
- 1:20:50SPEAKER_01: And I was like, Oh, oh no.
- 1:20:54SPEAKER_01: I was just like, oh no, oh no, no, no, no.
- 1:20:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:20:57SPEAKER_03: I mean, I would feel bad about making you making you go through this, but oh no, I did ask I've got a job to do.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_01: I did ask you.
- 1:21:04SPEAKER_03: I have to spread the word.
- 1:21:05SPEAKER_03: I spread the gospel of this film so that I can get the second one made.
- 1:21:08SPEAKER_03: It's an important job.
- 1:21:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we will use it.
- 1:21:10SPEAKER_03: I will keep making people watch it until we have a sequel.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_01: The most expensive sequel, suddenly, with Claire Foy.
- 1:21:20SPEAKER_01: Adding another 20 million to the budget.
- 1:21:23SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:21:25SPEAKER_03: Uh and I'm gonna get Anya Taylor Joy to be in it properly this time.
- 1:21:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, her scenes aren't gonna be cut, she's gonna get that opportunity that she wanted.
- 1:21:33SPEAKER_01: Even Zoe Deutsch will take a like giant leap in salaries for this for the next one.
- 1:21:39SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_01: Oh, the budget's gonna be huge.
- 1:21:43SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 1:21:44SPEAKER_03: I'm not even gonna read the other books, I'm just gonna write my own sequel.
- 1:21:48SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:21:49SPEAKER_03: I'll just take it, I'll I don't know.
- 1:21:51SPEAKER_03: We'll make Jesse the main character.
- 1:21:55SPEAKER_03: Do you remember who he is?
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_03: No.
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_03: No.
- 1:21:58SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 1:21:59SPEAKER_03: I'll pick one of the background characters and create a whole new storyline that doesn't address any of the things that happened in the first one.
- 1:22:07SPEAKER_01: I think you definitely should do that.
- 1:22:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:22:12SPEAKER_01: Okay, so let's move on to the final segment then.
- 1:22:15SPEAKER_01: Uh unless you've got anything else you want to add to it about the movie.
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_02: Oh no.
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_02: If you want to talk to me about it, find me on Twitter.
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_02: I tweet about it all the time.
- 1:22:24SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's move let's move on to the final segment then, which is um a m we'll discuss a movie that you think is the reverse of this, which is uh well reviewed and loved by critics, but you think is bad.
- 1:22:37SPEAKER_03: Hmm.
- 1:22:38SPEAKER_01: Just a very brief segment.
- 1:22:41SPEAKER_03: Well, so I I actually am not entirely sure how how loved it was by critics.
- 1:22:46SPEAKER_03: I should have looked this up beforehand.
- 1:22:48SPEAKER_03: But a universally loved film that that people are obsessed with that I really don't like is Moulin Rouge.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think that was pretty well loved by critics.
- 1:22:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:22:57SPEAKER_03: And I really and I I like Baz Lerman films, I like all the whole, you know, the bombastic costumes and freaky lighting and like strictly I think Strictly Ballroom is amazing.
- 1:23:11SPEAKER_03: That's the one I haven't seen.
- 1:23:12SPEAKER_03: It's really Oh, it's so good.
- 1:23:15SPEAKER_03: It's so good.
- 1:23:16SPEAKER_03: But I really don't like Moulin Rouge.
- 1:23:18SPEAKER_03: Despite the fact that I I love the soundtrack and I would listen to that all the time when I was a teenager.
- 1:23:25SPEAKER_03: And bisexual.
- 1:23:28SPEAKER_03: So it it goes to it sounds to reason that as a bisexual I should love Moulin Rouge.
- 1:23:34SPEAKER_03: And I feel like a traitor.
- 1:23:36SPEAKER_01: Is that a thing with bisexual people that they love?
- 1:23:39SPEAKER_03: I just feel like it's like, you know, if you're queer, you've gotta love Molin Rouge.
- 1:23:44SPEAKER_03: But I don't like it.
- 1:23:46SPEAKER_01: It's seven 76%, so it's it's still like decent.
- 1:23:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I re-watched it fairly recently, and I did I got bored.
- 1:23:59SPEAKER_03: Hmm.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I got bored, and then I lost because I got bored, I lost emotional commitment with the characters.
- 1:24:07SPEAKER_03: So by the time, spoiler alert, she dies, at the end, I was like.
- 1:24:12SPEAKER_01: Don't care.
- 1:24:13SPEAKER_03: Oh no.
- 1:24:14SPEAKER_03: Oh no.
- 1:24:17SPEAKER_03: I mean, like But I remember the first time I watched it being like, I don't want to watch this again because that was so traumatizingly sad.
- 1:24:24SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 1:24:24SPEAKER_03: I thought you were gonna say then I rewatched it.
- 1:24:27SPEAKER_03: That was that was back when I was a like a little a little teen who couldn't deal with their emotions.
- 1:24:33SPEAKER_03: Now I'm an adult who can't deal with my emotions and I still hate it.
- 1:24:37SPEAKER_01: No you are, I don't care.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_03: I um Yeah, I don't know what happened because the music is so good.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_03: And the costumes are amazing.
- 1:24:46SPEAKER_01: Visually it's great.
- 1:24:47SPEAKER_03: The cast is like, you know, technically flawless.
- 1:24:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:24:54SPEAKER_03: But I just I'm not there.
- 1:24:58SPEAKER_01: I haven't seen it in years, probably like 15 years, but I remember really liking it when I saw it.
- 1:25:04SPEAKER_01: I saw it when it came out and then I saw I've probably seen it again once since then.
- 1:25:08SPEAKER_01: But yeah, again, like probably not 15 years since I've seen it.
- 1:25:13SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, I really I really liked it at the time, but I don't yeah.
- 1:25:18SPEAKER_01: It's not it's not a one that I'd go back to.
- 1:25:22SPEAKER_03: Well that's the thing.
- 1:25:23SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm a obsessive rewatcher of films.
- 1:25:28SPEAKER_01: So am I.
- 1:25:29SPEAKER_01: I am usually.
- 1:25:30SPEAKER_03: I always if I like something or like I don't really know what I feel about it, then or even if I sort of hate it a bit, I I rewatch first.
- 1:25:41SPEAKER_01: That's when I don't.
- 1:25:44SPEAKER_03: Not if I think it's like a really bad film, but just if like, I don't know.
- 1:25:49SPEAKER_03: If it's a if it's a so bad it's good kind of situation, then that is my number one.
- 1:25:55SPEAKER_03: As you as you have just discovered.
- 1:25:57SPEAKER_01: Wait, so um yeah, so like what what would you put on that basically?
- 1:26:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:26:01SPEAKER_03: The what the so bad it's good or um I mean as I said before, all of the Bring It On sequels.
- 1:26:10SPEAKER_03: Oh right, yeah, yeah.
- 1:26:12SPEAKER_03: Although a couple of them are actually good.
- 1:26:16SPEAKER_03: But there are five.
- 1:26:17SPEAKER_03: So There are five sequels.
- 1:26:20SPEAKER_03: Or maybe four sequels in the original.
- 1:26:22SPEAKER_03: At least four.
- 1:26:22SPEAKER_01: I thought there were two sequels.
- 1:26:24SPEAKER_03: One of them's got Solange in it.
- 1:26:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's the one I I know that one.
- 1:26:28SPEAKER_03: And that is the that is the like the number one out of all of the sequels.
- 1:26:34SPEAKER_03: That's like the best one out of them.
- 1:26:36SPEAKER_00: Is that the one with Hayden Panassier?
- 1:26:39SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:26:40SPEAKER_03: And Weirdly Rihanna at some point.
- 1:26:43SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:26:44SPEAKER_03: It's like it's it is it is questionable in a lot of ways, but compared to the other ones, like, they are.
- 1:26:50SPEAKER_03: Oh wow, that's not even the first sequel.
- 1:26:52SPEAKER_01: I thought that was the first sequel.
- 1:26:53SPEAKER_01: It's not even the first sequel.
- 1:26:54SPEAKER_03: No.
- 1:26:56SPEAKER_03: No, the first sequel is weirdly the worst one.
- 1:26:59SPEAKER_03: Uh and then they kept making another three.
- 1:27:03SPEAKER_01: There's a Christina Milian one.
- 1:27:06SPEAKER_03: That's Christina Million one.
- 1:27:07SPEAKER_01: Ashley Benson one.
- 1:27:08SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 1:27:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:27:11SPEAKER_01: This is yeah.
- 1:27:12SPEAKER_01: I had no idea.
- 1:27:14SPEAKER_03: I just I also I just really I love any cheerleading film, any gymnastics film, right?
- 1:27:21SPEAKER_03: Any kind of like dance film, all of those.
- 1:27:25SPEAKER_01: I you must have been so happy at like in the early 2000s then.
- 1:27:30SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, yes.
- 1:27:31SPEAKER_03: And I'm still watching all of those as well.
- 1:27:33SPEAKER_03: Like, I will I I still think that they are great.
- 1:27:36SPEAKER_03: Gymnastics films are are my my new obsession.
- 1:27:40SPEAKER_03: Have you seen though they are objectively the worst.
- 1:27:43SPEAKER_01: We seem fired up.
- 1:27:46SPEAKER_03: Oh, I don't know.
- 1:27:47SPEAKER_03: They've all got names like that.
- 1:27:50SPEAKER_01: Which one's what's that about?
- 1:27:51SPEAKER_01: I haven't seen it, but I've heard it's really good.
- 1:27:53SPEAKER_01: But it's about it says the two most popular guys in high school decided to ditch football camp for cheerleader camp for the girls and for the glorious.
- 1:28:02SPEAKER_01: I've heard really good things.
- 1:28:04SPEAKER_01: It sounds stupid, but I've heard really good things about it.
- 1:28:06SPEAKER_01: Writing it down.
- 1:28:06SPEAKER_01: Fired up.
- 1:28:07SPEAKER_03: Genuinely writing that down.
- 1:28:10SPEAKER_01: Directed by the guy who made Easy A.
- 1:28:14SPEAKER_03: Easy A is a great film.
- 1:28:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:28:16SPEAKER_03: I love that film.
- 1:28:18SPEAKER_03: Well, that is good, I feel like that's a good one.
- 1:28:20SPEAKER_01: There you go, you got another cheerleading one to watch.
- 1:28:22SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:28:24SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, like I I used to love those dance films, but in the early I I loved Honey.
- 1:28:32SPEAKER_01: That was the one I remember being.
- 1:28:34unknown: Yeah.
- 1:28:34SPEAKER_03: Even though I know it's awful.
- 1:28:36SPEAKER_03: Oh god, yeah, no, terrible.
- 1:28:38SPEAKER_01: And Save the Last Dance as well.
- 1:28:40SPEAKER_03: Save the Last Dance.
- 1:28:42SPEAKER_03: Also, oh, what's the other one?
- 1:28:44SPEAKER_03: Um Take the Lead, which I I still feel is that's got Antonio Banderas.
- 1:28:49SPEAKER_01: I remember that car, I never saw it, but I remember it.
- 1:28:51SPEAKER_03: Actually, actually, for me, I don't know what this says about me, but that one holds up in my mind.
- 1:28:58SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:28:58SPEAKER_03: I've rewatched it.
- 1:28:59SPEAKER_03: You've rewatched it.
- 1:29:00SPEAKER_03: I still I think it uh is actually good.
- 1:29:03SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:29:04SPEAKER_03: I I would recommend it genuinely.
- 1:29:06SPEAKER_03: It's like an enjoyable film experience for someone who likes dance films.
- 1:29:10SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:29:11SPEAKER_01: Who else is in there?
- 1:29:12SPEAKER_01: There's someone else in there, isn't there?
- 1:29:14SPEAKER_03: It's yeah.
- 1:29:15SPEAKER_03: Why was I thinking that I thought J Lo was in that for some reason?
- 1:29:19SPEAKER_03: Oh no, J-Lo's not in that one.
- 1:29:22SPEAKER_03: Um, but it has got um Jenna Dewan, aka from Step Up, yeah.
- 1:29:28SPEAKER_01: The girl that's in every dance movie.
- 1:29:31SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:29:32SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's got Rufio in it.
- 1:29:35SPEAKER_03: Yes, it's got it's like got quite a good cast.
- 1:29:40SPEAKER_03: I do recommend that.
- 1:29:41SPEAKER_01: It's only got 44%.
- 1:29:42SPEAKER_03: That's not I I think that that is wrong.
- 1:29:45SPEAKER_01: But 77 from the audience, so there you go.
- 1:29:49SPEAKER_03: It's got really good the dancing in it, is it's the best dancing out of all of the dance films.
- 1:29:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:29:53SPEAKER_03: I personally think.
- 1:29:54SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:29:54SPEAKER_03: And also Antonio Banderas.
- 1:29:56SPEAKER_01: Who's great at everything?
- 1:29:58SPEAKER_03: He's great.
- 1:29:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:29:59SPEAKER_03: We love him.
- 1:30:00SPEAKER_01: Cool.
- 1:30:01SPEAKER_01: I'll I'll probably check that out then.
- 1:30:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, show the gospel for two films.
- 1:30:07SPEAKER_01: I'll watch that, you watch Fire Up.
- 1:30:10SPEAKER_03: Alright, we'll report back.
- 1:30:11SPEAKER_01: Although I should probably watch Fire Up because I haven't seen it either.
- 1:30:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean uh uh prepare to for me to enjoy it regardless of whether or not it's good or bad.
- 1:30:21SPEAKER_03: I I actually don't think I have any critical faculties when it comes to chill eating slash gymnastics slash dance films.
- 1:30:28SPEAKER_03: I just really like watching them flipping around.
- 1:30:31SPEAKER_01: Anything with a bit of like dancing in it, you're your soul.
- 1:30:35SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 1:30:36SPEAKER_01: I mean it does it does make things more exciting in a movie.
- 1:30:40SPEAKER_03: It does.
- 1:30:40SPEAKER_03: And also it it fulfills a part of me that could have been a dancer at some point but never was.
- 1:30:48SPEAKER_01: Did you you never did any kind of dancing?
- 1:30:51SPEAKER_03: Oh, I did.
- 1:30:52SPEAKER_03: I did ballet for like for 15 years when I was younger.
- 1:30:55SPEAKER_03: Like right now, that's why this explains so much.
- 1:30:58SPEAKER_03: Exactly! Yeah, that's why I love it.
- 1:31:00SPEAKER_03: I um I was never like particularly good, but you know, I can live vicariously through all of these dance movies.
- 1:31:09SPEAKER_01: Did you have like the whole black swan experience then?
- 1:31:12SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, I did.
- 1:31:13SPEAKER_03: I I did uh have a split personality.
- 1:31:17SPEAKER_03: Majority of my teams.
- 1:31:21SPEAKER_01: Um on that, I think it's a good place to end it.
- 1:31:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
