- 0:30By episode, I'm your host, silly creature Johannes.
- 0:34Have you may have guessed. This is a bonus episode of
- 0:36Fraggle, talk much like back to the Rock, which ended its first
- 0:39season. A few months ago, we are back
- 0:41with a surprise episode where we'll be discussing night of the
- 0:44lights, a special holiday episode that you can watch right
- 0:47now on Apple TV plus much like our other episodes in this
- 0:51podcast series. We'll be talking about the
- 0:52episode in full detail. So consider this, your spoiler
- 0:56warning. If you haven't watched night of
- 0:58the lights yet, feel free to go watch it.
- 1:00It and then come back and find this podcast episode later.
- 1:02Don't worry, we'll be waiting for you.
- 1:05For this special holiday episode of Fraggle.
- 1:07Talk were pleased to welcome to tough pigs writers that I've
- 1:09specifically chosen for their unique expertise.
- 1:12First, you've heard her as the host of The Dig Deeper segments
- 1:15here on Fraggle talk. It's our Fraggle Rock expert
- 1:19Beth cook. Hello Beth.
- 1:23Hello. Also.
- 1:25Joining us is the co-host of the tough pigs podcast, moving.
- 1:28Right along, which is currently partway through covering Muppet
- 1:31Christmas Carol, two minutes at a time.
- 1:33It's our Christmas experts Anthony strand.
- 1:35Hey, Anthony! Hey, that's me right now.
- 1:48All through the year. You know, it's true.
- 1:50It is so it's Obviously we've all were all very familiar with
- 1:55the the previous Fraggle, Rock holiday episode, the bells of
- 1:59Fraggle Rock. So it's exciting to see that
- 2:01they're coming back and they're doing it all over again.
- 2:03Which is giving me a great opportunity to talk fraggles and
- 2:07Christmas and holidays, and Henson, and all things
- 2:10Encompass, with the two of you. So thank you all for being here.
- 2:15So let's Beth, let's start with you.
- 2:18You were obviously really involved with covering Fraggle,
- 2:24Rock back to the rock for that first season that we've just
- 2:27wrapped. How does this episode hold up to
- 2:30you as a part of the larger series?
- 2:33So it fits in seamlessly. The only thing that makes it
- 2:39stand out is the fact that it can stand alone as its own
- 2:43thing. It doesn't have the larger
- 2:45connecting themes that was really new for us and seeing and
- 2:49back to the rock that they could have this story arc over the
- 2:54whole season because the original Fraggle Rock, they were
- 2:58really more episodic, and you could take them each as
- 3:02standalone. Roads.
- 3:03And so this one felt yeah a little more nostalgic in that
- 3:07way. That you can just watch this
- 3:10along with all your other various Henson holiday specials.
- 3:17Yeah. It's a bit of a return to form
- 3:19for Fraggle Rock in that way rights.
- 3:20Like like we like that that Standalone that dumb in one
- 3:24story that we're so used to from the original series.
- 3:27Yeah, but I also really like that.
- 3:29They kept what I expected from Back To The Rock in terms of a
- 3:35nice balance of the fraggle, five, and secondary characters,
- 3:41giving us one original song, and one classic song for The
- 3:44Original Series. Yeah, absolutely.
- 3:46Yeah. There's only a format that the
- 3:47following here. Yeah, kind of walking that line
- 3:50between the old stuff and the new stuff which is how it should
- 3:53be, if, you know, we're bringing back old handsome property.
- 3:59A Anthony. How does this hold up amongst
- 4:02the rest of the Muppet holiday Cannon?
- 4:05There's so many great holiday specials.
- 4:08I mean it's such a loaded question, right?
- 4:10Because yeah, I've seen this one time.
- 4:12I've only seen too late. I've already I've already asked
- 4:14it. Yeah it's I'll say that it is
- 4:17right in between it is right above dinosaurs refrigerator day
- 4:21and right below I don't know let's say the Christmas toy
- 4:26great. I think that's That actually
- 4:28might be accurate that might be I guess.
- 4:30No, I think it's very good. But I think like what Beth was
- 4:33saying especially in a show with with characters that you love
- 4:39one of the goals of a great Christmas episode of holiday
- 4:42episode is that you can just like pull it out once a year.
- 4:45And like maybe you haven't watched the show in a while but
- 4:48like it's a good excuse, just to see those characters and see
- 4:51what they're up to and watch him hang out.
- 4:53And you know like I mean I mentioned like refrigerator date
- 4:57that's the opposite of dinosaurs.
- 4:58I've seen the most times by far for the watching every single
- 5:01year. You know and I watch those in
- 5:04Fraggle, Rock every single year, you know.
- 5:07And so like I think this one fits in well with those because
- 5:13I am excited to revisit it. I'm excited to add it to the
- 5:17rotation, like, it'll be fun to watch this back-to-back with
- 5:20bells of Fraggle Rock, and remember that both.
- 5:23Versions of Fraggle, Rock are really fun like because like
- 5:27because I think it I mean here's the thing two years ago on my
- 5:31Facebook and Joe, you know this I counted down my 50 favorite
- 5:36Christmas episodes of all time, one day at a time from November
- 5:406th through December 25th. Classic classic Anthony like
- 5:44yeah, I'll make a pop culture list for 5th at days in a row.
- 5:48It is that Saint Anthony and And I think that the fact that this
- 6:05one like it's like almost a microcosm of the backs to The
- 6:09Rock in general, then it's incredible that, it's not an
- 6:12embarrassment. It's incredible that they
- 6:16somehow manage to bring Fraggle Rock back, and it doesn't feel
- 6:20just like a rehash, but it feels just as alive.
- 6:25Like it somehow. They just started cranking out,
- 6:28new episodes of Fraggle Rock and it feels like Fraggle Rock.
- 6:32Yeah that's it feels like a miracle it really does right.
- 6:35Well but I remember talking to you after we both watch the
- 6:38first episode and we were both just like incredulous that yes
- 6:44that this happened like because I I mean I don't want to speak
- 6:47for you but I think we both were like very nervous that it was
- 6:51going to be a disaster. Absolutely, like cautiously
- 6:55optimistic but but with this, Show in particular, you know, if
- 7:01if they didn't get it right, it was really gonna sting in a way.
- 7:06No other reboot could, and the fact that they just got it
- 7:15Pitch. Perfect was like, wait, wait,
- 7:18what? Now we get more episodes of
- 7:21this. It's a whole season.
- 7:23Yeah. Yeah.
- 7:24And so now, I think, is that season ended in what April?
- 7:28That right about March um that sounds about right.
- 7:31Some like that taking to. Yeah.
- 7:33Hmm. And so for now, all of a sudden,
- 7:35seven months later, there's one more episode, it felt to me like
- 7:39oh yeah, I love it. Oh yeah, this rules.
- 7:41You know what I mean? Like, yeah.
- 7:43A real sense of like, oh, it's so it's, it really is a gift to
- 7:46have Frederick Beck and we absolutely eagle-eyed folks on
- 7:51tough pigs being like, hey, there's this shot in the trailer
- 7:56that we got for the series that now we Don't see and there was
- 7:59something about this you know, episode 14 that doesn't seem to
- 8:03exist now and now it exists. Now we have.
- 8:07Yeah. And why I don't want to talk
- 8:09about that a bit more. We get to some of those scenes
- 8:11later on in this episode. But for now, I would love to
- 8:15dive into this episode with both of you and again, for anyone
- 8:18who's listening. If you haven't watched it yet,
- 8:20it's a great episode. Go watch it.
- 8:22Enjoy it. And then you can come on back
- 8:25here and you can follow along beat by beat as we break this
- 8:28thing apart. Hearts.
- 8:30So this episode begins as the fraggles are counting down to
- 8:34something and they're counting five for pickle 21 which is so
- 8:41stupid and hysterical. I love that so much.
- 8:45They're they're lighting the glow grapes and looks like
- 8:48there's like Christmas lights all over Fraggle Rock and
- 8:51hanging from the stalagmites or stalactites or I don't know
- 8:53which one is. Which does anyone know states
- 8:56are the ceiling? Because see, see Ealing.
- 8:58See stalactite, GE stalagmite G ground.
- 9:03Whoa. You're teaching me all sorts of
- 9:05things today. Anthony, yeah, Dianna this to
- 9:10know things and teach people. Thank you.
- 9:11I'm literally a librarian. So yes and the Storyteller is
- 9:18giving her big speech, she's just explaining its.
- 9:20The darkest idea is a lot of exposition here coming from the
- 9:22Storyteller, which is also, by the way, like the greatest
- 9:26character to do this because She's flailing her arms, she's
- 9:30talking like a drunk lady and she's telling everyone that the
- 9:34it's a Darkest Night of the Year.
- 9:35This is the time when the fraggles push back against the
- 9:37darkness and she starts going, no Darkness, bad Darkness, it's
- 9:42not your night darkness. And she's literally, I wish I
- 9:45could explain how she flails. It's a very specific kind of
- 9:49flail that she's doing, but it's night of the lights.
- 9:53Happy Night of Lights. Everybody happy that it's the
- 9:55lights. Yeah.
- 9:57When I was watching through the first 13 episodes of Back to the
- 10:03Rock, I was playing a little game with myself where I would
- 10:06Mark how soon I could spot what the lesson of the episode was
- 10:12going to be. And in this episode, I got it in
- 10:16her. First paragraph is really
- 10:18started saying no Darkness, not your night anymore, Jack - I was
- 10:24like, oh, I wonder if this is going to be about.
- 10:26Oh, sometimes you have to embrace the darkness spoiler
- 10:30alert. So I was really proud of myself
- 10:31for getting for that nice. That's how yeah, that's
- 10:35fascinating. And I will have more questions
- 10:37about that at the end of the episode because I'm the
- 10:39opposite, I didn't understand what the theme was.
- 10:43Until they got to it and then I'm still like is it though?
- 10:47Is that does that make sense? So let's let's let's pull up a
- 10:51little bit in that and come back to it definitely come back to
- 10:53that but neither lights is now I guess the the other how like a
- 10:59winter holiday that the fraggles have have a theory about that.
- 11:04Yeah, please. So in this episode Mochi and red
- 11:09talk about exchanging night of the lights presence in because
- 11:14of railroad track, when they are celebrating the Rocks.
- 11:21Slowing down. Does it have a name?
- 11:22I guess it's just like Festival the bells, right?
- 11:24That's about the belts. Yeah.
- 11:26When they're sober, net. Nobody talks about presents,
- 11:28right? It's just, they're going to ring
- 11:30the bell and that's what the thing is, well, in Muppet family
- 11:33Christmas. We have a time like that.
- 11:36We all give each other a little presence.
- 11:39Whoa, huh. So is Night of the like it's the
- 11:43one they're talking about another family Christmas because
- 11:46that's very possible. Although I will throw a small
- 11:48monkey wrench into this in bells of Fraggle, Rock.
- 11:53Doc is making it clear. It's the winter solstice because
- 11:56there's all these different Solstice Traditions around the
- 12:00world and Solstice, As We Know, Comes just a few days before
- 12:06Christmas, you know, if these two holidays are, in fact,
- 12:11separate holidays, that are very distinct and not just like part
- 12:15of like the larger Christmas celebration or whatever it is,
- 12:18then they're only like three days apart from each other.
- 12:22Well, that's true. But you know how fraggles can
- 12:25have their birthdays whenever they want and they were like,
- 12:29okay red. Yes you could have your birthday
- 12:31today but you just had yours like four days.
- 12:34So why don't we let Wembley have a chance?
- 12:37They absolutely have so many more holidays than we do.
- 12:41They must have got to have more than one winter holiday that's a
- 12:44good point, especially, because like, we know that they have
- 12:47lots of holidays, I've had lots of holidays throughout the
- 12:49series and so, like they probably do have a new Hull.
- 12:52It's like, like right now. When we see on social media,
- 12:56when people are, like, it's National chocolate.
- 12:57Chip cookie day. It's National Hug a corgi day.
- 13:00It's National stand on your head day and everyone's posting
- 13:02stupid memes about it. It's Yes, there's a holiday
- 13:05every single day in the fraggles actually have real ones as
- 13:07opposed to you know it's National water bottle day or
- 13:11whatever they take their silliness.
- 13:13Very seriously, it's true well and but also the Go I mean we
- 13:18know it's a Multiverse like we know this is not exactly the
- 13:22same Fraggle Rock as the original series like.
- 13:24Yeah, it starts with a different version of Matt going to explore
- 13:28outer space, you know? Sure.
- 13:30Yeah. Doc Doc is a different person.
- 13:33So are you saying, That Barry Allen went back in time.
- 13:36Saved his mom and I'll suddenly wheeler suitable, fraggle,
- 13:39Christmas holidays. Yes, that's what I'm saying.
- 13:45Do you remember the episode with?
- 13:48Yeah, sure. That was for Barry, Allen's at
- 13:53his mom's death. Whoa.
- 13:58I feel terrible for the people who have no idea what we're
- 13:59talking about, but I feel worse for the people who do The TV
- 14:05show called The Flash and it was very good for exactly one
- 14:09season. So that is true.
- 14:11And there's a comic book called flash point, which they keep
- 14:14remaking in other media, even though it's not very good.
- 14:17And that's kind of where all this exists stemming from.
- 14:20Yep. Anyway, I could be better than
- 14:23that. Is way better than the flash,
- 14:25any version of The Flash, because we also get our first
- 14:28song of the episode. It's, I assume it's called,
- 14:31right? Oh yes, please.
- 14:32Yeah, the song we see, Or maybe it's during this song.
- 14:35There is a radish shaped Piñata. Yeah, and I'm the song.
- 14:41Yeah, yeah, I'm choosing to believe that this is a nod to
- 14:44what you were talking about, in the balance of Fraggle, Rock
- 14:49that we see doc and sprocket breaking open a pinata.
- 14:54Yes, right. Yeah, that piñata.
- 14:56It's great. It's a rash pinata.
- 14:58And when they finally break it open, it's filled with radishes
- 15:00full of red. Which I love but this I believe
- 15:05I'm guessing it's called night of the lights.
- 15:07We don't actually know that just yet, I'm sure we'll find out any
- 15:10day now, but it's like a poppy Christmas song.
- 15:13Anthony. Can you, I feel like it sounded
- 15:15really similar to another specific specific Christmas
- 15:19song, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it.
- 15:21Did it remind you of anything in particular?
- 15:23I mean, I don't know. It feels a little bit like Last
- 15:25Christmas by the Wham it like, yeah.
- 15:27Except that's what it reminded me of a little bit.
- 15:29I wrote down that it reminds me of all I want for Christmas is
- 15:34By Mariah Carey sure? Yeah, absolutely.
- 15:36Go like, it's just like the poppy Christmas time.
- 15:38There's a specific. I'm going to have to re-listen
- 15:41to it. But part of it was like oh I
- 15:43feel like I think many was like a but um, but um, but don't like
- 15:46something like. Yeah, but I'm not be and modern.
- 15:51Yeah, yeah, there's a definitely, a padam padam padam
- 15:54in that song. That's also like the padam
- 15:56padam, padam pinned. All I Want For Christmas Is You.
- 16:00Incredible. So, during the song Jam, Dylan
- 16:05shows up our buddy, Jim dalen, he is once again voiced by
- 16:09daveed Diggs. I'm guessing he's probably
- 16:11puppeteered by Puppeteer Andy Heyward.
- 16:14Who was on this podcast? We feels well, we know that he
- 16:17is because Andy posted a picture of him and gentlemen, on the
- 16:22like, with grit with glow. Grapes in the background.
- 16:24Oh, there you go. All right.
- 16:26All right. Thank you.
- 16:27Social media. Thanks, Andy for posting a
- 16:29picture. You probably.
- 16:29We shouldn't have because you leaked a whole bunch of
- 16:32Christmas this to us, but he doesn't have the other
- 16:36Troubadours with him. So I wonder where they are.
- 16:39Any theories. They're on vacation, just show
- 16:44up randomly without the other minstrels once in awhile so
- 16:48great. I, yeah, I don't think the other
- 16:49missiles are in bells in Fraggle.
- 16:51Rock. Are they I don't think so.
- 16:54They might be like, singing along in the background, but
- 16:59they definitely don't have speaking lines in that episode,
- 17:02right? Sure.
- 17:03It's just like, it's just, like, cantus showing up and being like
- 17:07you know where the Great Valley that's is the thing.
- 17:12That's, that's the whole episode and it's the greatest thing ever
- 17:14aired on television, like it's the best terrific, I love that
- 17:21anyway, which is a good reason. Then why why Jim Dylan is in
- 17:24this episode because that does feel like a bit of a throwback
- 17:27to bells of Fraggle Rock, which had which had cantus as a
- 17:32special guest star, you know? Right.
- 17:35Yep. You did the guy who shows up in
- 17:37his entire job is to be groovy and mellow and inscrutable
- 17:42exactly. Yes.
- 17:43Right. And also like strangely the
- 17:45grown up in the room which dragged around Whaley has but
- 17:49these two characters definitely act as like in a Already, not
- 17:54really a childlike character, not as Daft as some of the other
- 18:00adults on the show or doltish figures will see more of him in
- 18:06a minute. But we speaking of cameos, we
- 18:10get a glimpse of the Grizzard. Our buddy who's a was previously
- 18:14known as the lizard, I believe in the episode gone.
- 18:18But not forgotten from the Original Series.
- 18:21Yeah. What mudwell the mud Bunny
- 18:23turned into. Yeah, that's right.
- 18:25Yeah. And he's got a glow grip on his
- 18:27nose like Rudolph but he wasn't very happy about it.
- 18:30Which I also like we also see a fraggle on stilts which I don't
- 18:35know if we've seen before. Yeah.
- 18:36That really have the same note like it.
- 18:39Yes. Like it fits seamlessly into
- 18:42fraggle or and yet as a puppetry trick I don't know if we've seen
- 18:45it so good so fun. I feel like we've seen it on the
- 18:51old show like in the And I couldn't tell you when or where,
- 18:54or if I've that's even true. And I might be thinking of I'm
- 18:59saying this without having it in front of me, so I could get any
- 19:01detail of this wrong. Okay.
- 19:02You know, that mural of the theater with all the Muppets in
- 19:06the seats that used to be in the Henson company office.
- 19:09Yeah. In New York.
- 19:11So in the background there's definitely a character who's on
- 19:14stilts and my memory it's that it's a fraggle.
- 19:17So I wonder if if that's like oh yeah, there's fraggles on stilts
- 19:22and That's why this person Illustrated this into this.
- 19:25It's painting. It's Not Afraid.
- 19:26Although it's like no. It's just like what?
- 19:28Not Court Jester. Oh well, there goes that theory.
- 19:33Yeah, we read it. Does that feel like it fits
- 19:37like, of course fraggles on stilts makes perfect sense,
- 19:40right? Yeah, later on in the episode on
- 19:42a few caught Gobo saying, like let's go check in with Rhonda
- 19:45about the about the stilts or whatever.
- 19:47So I guess that character's name is Rhonda Rhonda.
- 19:49Yeah. What's that has to be like,
- 19:54honoring someone specifics, but they know whose name is Rhonda
- 19:57because you just don't go around.
- 19:59They make a fraggle. Rhonda.
- 20:01Yes. Named after Alice girlfriend.
- 20:10We also see a large Marvin in the audience and I was really
- 20:13expecting large Marvin to have some sort of, line of a party,
- 20:16but yeah, me too, but so many characters have lines in this
- 20:21like, They devote so much time to including his many of our
- 20:25friends as they can, so I guess that's true.
- 20:27Yeah, no, I'm not going to complain about the lack of
- 20:31large. Marvin when he's right there,
- 20:33you said he's with her worst. Large Market isn't say anything.
- 20:38I'm never watching for. What kind of Christmas is this?
- 20:44Yeah. Did we get a black bar Vivid?
- 20:46Darkness does the confetti cannons?
- 20:53We've definitely seen multiple times and back to the rock that.
- 20:56I don't think we saw in the original, but it again, it just
- 21:00bits. Of course, they have confetti
- 21:02cannons that are going off all the time.
- 21:04So, for some reason, this made me think of well for obvious
- 21:09reasons, maybe think of that episode of the 2015 Muppet Show,
- 21:13I believe the episode was because love, which has crazy.
- 21:17Harry sitting off a confetti cannon of like, Like pink rose
- 21:23petals or something like that. And I mistakenly thought that
- 21:26was the Christmas episode. So it's like, I'm digging
- 21:29already like this is just like that Christmas episode of The
- 21:31Muppets, but it's not. That's a different holiday.
- 21:33So it's not at all related, except that they both have
- 21:36Muppets with confetti cannons on a holiday, right, right.
- 21:41And this is, this was nothing. This thought was nothing.
- 21:44Why did I say that out loud? It doesn't mean anything.
- 21:49Speaking of thoughts that are nothing and should not be set
- 21:51up. Loud.
- 21:52Yeah, we all remember when Pinkie Pie would fire off a
- 21:55canoe, literally, my thought that was nothing.
- 21:58That should not be said out loud.
- 21:59There you go. So I would fit in so perfectly
- 22:01really worth the time of her life.
- 22:06I see. This is a My Little Pony
- 22:07specifically. Yeah.
- 22:08This is this initially, do you remember that?
- 22:10Gift of the Magi episode with Pinkie Pie where she gave away
- 22:13her confetti cannon in order to get a rock pouch for her sister
- 22:17mod? Here's your dream on little
- 22:19cupcake, sent it. You for her confetti cannon?
- 22:23Yeah. Yeah.
- 22:24Classic. I'm not.
- 22:25It's, I really like you're speaking Swedish.
- 22:30I was thinking about the one with the Weird Al do with, she's
- 22:33sandwich. Yes.
- 22:34Well, he's the other, the other party planner and that because
- 22:37that has ends with like the confetti cannons, are like, what
- 22:41makes the party in the end? He didn't think of confetti
- 22:43cannons, and then pinky Rose them in.
- 22:47Joe friendship is Magic. Yeah, in case I know, The number
- 22:52friendship is that I got it. I got it.
- 22:54You can't leave the magic. Therefore you can't leave the
- 22:57Friendship. That's why Pinkie Pie would fit
- 23:01in on Fraggle Rock exactly. They could be illustrated by
- 23:04Katie cook. There you go right?
- 23:08He's TT Cooks. Draw the cross over her.
- 23:10Yeah, oh man. Okay, so we're gonna we're gonna
- 23:14get on this. Yes.
- 23:16Jim Leyland brings in this new little I guess it's called a
- 23:19floopy bug. Yeah, the flu.
- 23:22Ruby bug. Have we seen these creatures?
- 23:25I don't think so. And here's the thing about the
- 23:28flu bug, like, he's like, oh, I ran into this flu bug named
- 23:32Coupe. And then each of the fraggles
- 23:34says, hello to Coupe specifically calling out his
- 23:37name, which made me think, oh, Coupe is going to be a big part
- 23:40of this episode. They're like hammering it in.
- 23:43Don't forget about coop. It scoop your new friend Coop.
- 23:46We're gonna be selling merchandise with coupon it, you
- 23:48know, we're Coupe is an on-screen.
- 23:51Everyone should be asking where you can do.
- 23:55I am actually asking where's Coop because like this kind of
- 23:59Forgotten after after the like this, this introduction.
- 24:01And then the next scene coming up?
- 24:04Yeah, when jammed, when first introduced him, he was kind of
- 24:07like, looking around as if he were like uncomfortable and then
- 24:10I felt like the fraggles were deliberately trying to make him
- 24:13feel welcome. I was like, oh okay, this is
- 24:16where we're going turns out. No, right.
- 24:20That definitely feels like the only feels like something that
- 24:24was happening. Because of the lessons that
- 24:27we've learned through, the rest of this series, back to the
- 24:31Rock, because there's so much about acceptance and so much
- 24:33about like being welcoming and being a bigger Community.
- 24:38But like you said, at the beginning, this podcast, you
- 24:41know, this isn't really connected to the larger story of
- 24:45the larger lessons from Back to the Rock.
- 24:46So it does feel like it's a little out of place, right?
- 24:50They don't mean they don't give Ed Helms in new home in this
- 24:53one. Well, in this scene also, and in
- 25:00addition to meeting Coop boober, introduces us to his holiday
- 25:05root cake, which sounds disgusting.
- 25:07I'm sure it is disgusting because all the other fraggles
- 25:10recoil and discussed, they don't want any part of it.
- 25:12They also don't want to be impolite to boober, so they're
- 25:15making up reasons, why they don't want it.
- 25:17But Anthony, I don't expect you to sit here and tell me the
- 25:22history of fruitcake, as a holiday gift.
- 25:26But I would like you you to tell us a little bit about fruitcake
- 25:30as a holiday gift, as seen in holiday specials as specifically
- 25:34this joke like that. That's nobody wants fruitcake.
- 25:37Hmm? Right.
- 25:39Well. So this is not a special but did
- 25:43you seek the movie mixed nuts? I mean, I think I saw once but I
- 25:47don't read about it. That's enough that's it.
- 25:51Nora Ephron movie from 1990. For it's right after Sleepless.
- 25:57In Seattle for I think and it's about Steve Martin and Madeline
- 26:01Kahn running a like suicide prevention, huh?
- 26:05And for whatever reason, the movie mixed nuts, has like
- 26:10multiple jokes about Madeline Kahn receiving fruitcakes, and
- 26:15like, graciously accepting fruitcakes that she doesn't
- 26:18want. And so when I think of fruitcake
- 26:23jokes in Holiday Program bank, it's not even special, it's the
- 26:28movie mixed nuts. So I know that there are some
- 26:34but like I know what there's one hands, one of the Golden Girls
- 26:39Christmas at this, right? That's that's what I was going
- 26:41to say is it's one of those things that comes up on sitcoms
- 26:44more. I feel like, and it's just kind
- 26:46of like, oh, we're talking about fruitcakes.
- 26:49Well, the one that I was specifically thinking of was the
- 26:55Pee Wee holiday special. All right.
- 26:57Yeah. Which like, yeah, everyone gives
- 26:59them a fruitcake. Everyone gets Route. 94 big
- 27:02builds like a wall of fruitcake with it.
- 27:03Yeah, that's right. Yeah, that's So good because
- 27:06it's it's like a subversion. I like the Trope is like yuck
- 27:10fruitcake and Pee-Wee's like oh fruit cake.
- 27:13And then he does something productive with them and builds
- 27:16a wall of fruit, classic, be. We, I really want to know where
- 27:20that started, we will have to do some research offline.
- 27:24And I know because of the history of freakin like, like
- 27:27I've definitely eating fruitcake before but like not that much.
- 27:30Nobody really makes it do. You think, do you think that
- 27:32this joke killed The Fruitcake? Yeah maybe oh and then we get to
- 27:39see pogie running, he's covered in glow grapes and he just kind
- 27:42of Screams and flails and then runs off which is I really I was
- 27:46really hoping for a bogey appearance in this episode and
- 27:50I'm glad that it was so brief and chaotic.
- 27:54Yeah, I also really love his sweater.
- 27:57Seems to be made entirely of tinsel.
- 27:59Where's the other fraggles are wearing like a tensile necklace
- 28:02or tinsel headband? And he's just all day.
- 28:05In tensile and glow Grapes. Of course, we didn't even talk
- 28:09about that, that all the fraggles are in there, like,
- 28:11winter holiday clothes, which people myself included adorer
- 28:16when Muppets are dressed for the holidays.
- 28:20Yeah, they've got like, scarves and hats and, and tinsel and
- 28:23stuff. Yeah, it's great.
- 28:25Well, that you can see about the tinsel necklace, isn't like,
- 28:27it's a new look, you know, in bells of Fraggle, Rock.
- 28:31They're all just waiting like stocking caps and scarves and
- 28:33stuff like you say, what does great in adorable?
- 28:35Don't get me wrong, it's the best.
- 28:38But in this one it was like a new.
- 28:40It was like exciting and new, you know, and expects me it, I
- 28:44love it. You could tell that like, like
- 28:47the same as what we heard with all the people that we've
- 28:49interviewed on this podcast before but it sounds like it was
- 28:52the props people in the costume people just like all they want
- 28:55me to put a scarf on red. Well, I'm not just gonna do
- 28:58that. I'm going to make this look
- 28:59great and I'm a little little sparkly pom-poms on it and you
- 29:03know, make it look holiday-ish and No, it all works and all
- 29:07fits in with the characters like boobers got like this comfy
- 29:11looking sweater. I mean, it's that's terrific.
- 29:14I love it. I had the same thought and this
- 29:16is jumping ahead slightly when Mochi presents her present to
- 29:20read and it's this gorgeously wrapped thing with like a little
- 29:24cluster of wintery foliage and it looks like you know handmade
- 29:30paper that was colored with watercolor paints and looks like
- 29:34someone got to make Take that. Yeah, it's true.
- 29:39Well let's talk about that. So yeah, red and mokey are
- 29:43exchanging gifts. Sort of bread doesn't really
- 29:45want to because she she doesn't say in this scene why she didn't
- 29:51want to exchange gifts. She's kind of like a bouska.
- 29:53Say it and then Yankee, he cuts her off, right?
- 29:57Yeah, I'm okay. Gives her of this painting of
- 29:59red diving into the pond and the, she like holds a glow grape
- 30:02up to it and it looks like it's supposed to do something really
- 30:05special. Special to me.
- 30:06It just looked like it kind of lit it up a little bit, right.
- 30:09Like it was it anything more than that to you to me?
- 30:12It reminded me of like you know, those black light paintings.
- 30:15Yeah. but I'm guessing if all of the other lighting sources were
- 30:21gone, man. It was just glow.
- 30:22Great lights that. Maybe it might look cooler.
- 30:25Yeah, I know, I was expecting something like, oh, what if you
- 30:29hold the little grape up to it? Then there's like a secret
- 30:32pattern behind it or, you know, it spells your name.
- 30:35I don't know what, but it was just like, oh, yes, it made it
- 30:37like the light made, it slightly lighter, that's what light does.
- 30:45It is a very thoughtful gift and now red needs to try to, you
- 30:49know, one upper and find a great gift to give back to her.
- 30:52That's going to be read and mokey's little Runner throughout
- 30:55this episode. The the world's oldest fraggle
- 30:58over here. Is everybody talking about how
- 30:59great the lights are and he elevated runs in and goes
- 31:02loop-de-loop? T these lights were real.
- 31:04We wouldn't be dancing. The lights would be dancing.
- 31:07And he sounds like a crazy old man.
- 31:09I love the world's oldest Fraggle.
- 31:13It's so good because they have you know they have their little
- 31:17moment of just not in smile and and humor, the old guy but the
- 31:23music that was playing while he was talking.
- 31:25I was like this has a definite are of chekhov's.
- 31:30Dancing lights to it. Timbaland and the fraggles are
- 31:36decide they're going to start making some night of the light
- 31:38wishes. I guess this is the tradition.
- 31:40Is that you make wishes on the night of the lights.
- 31:44When we wishes, he can find the biggest.
- 31:45Most special most magical light any fraggle has ever seen.
- 31:49Gobo keeps his wishes secret. Red wishes she can find a great
- 31:53grip for mokey mokey later will tell us that she has a wish but
- 31:58she doesn't actually make it in this scene boober wishes to make
- 32:03it through the night. He says, I'm not shooting for
- 32:05the Stars here, just trying to see another day.
- 32:07Thanks for your time. So relatable my dude.
- 32:13So good at such that such a good mood.
- 32:15Were line in gentleman wishes that he can dance with Coop.
- 32:18Remember, Coop, we have, we said his name like 12 times and since
- 32:21that's our money back, everybody coup.
- 32:24Yes. And then we hear this, like,
- 32:25disco tune and coops legs, like, extend out, and then he like,
- 32:28dances a little bit and then he goes right back down and so it
- 32:33really is. Very cute.
- 32:35It's some nice puppetry. It's it's a cool character
- 32:38design once he kind of extends those legs.
- 32:42But, that's it for cool. That's a wrap on Coop everybody
- 32:45for now my coop, nose, no nose. What's happening in the future?
- 32:48I hope they'll be amazing if we maybe got more coming season to.
- 32:52Yeah, maybe Coupe. Is this Sensational character?
- 32:54Find of 2423 and we just don't know it.
- 32:57Maybe how amazing would it be if they started making Koopa
- 33:00merchandise and like not really anything else?
- 33:09Scoop. Yeah.
- 33:11He's, he's a collectible. Collect collect all 10.
- 33:17I was going to say about the wishes, I like that first.
- 33:20We get Wembley be in. Like I want to find the
- 33:23brightest light and then everybody else gets a nice
- 33:26little character beat, and then gentleman is just like, I never
- 33:29mind. Let's do that first one, but
- 33:32yeah. It's very like, it's like all
- 33:36the rest of this was just like a fun side thing, but that first
- 33:39one Wembley said, that's it. That's the rest of the episode.
- 33:42Let's go. Yeah, first idea, best idea, you
- 33:45can sorry, everybody else. You're on your own line.
- 33:49There's a line that the world's oldest fraggle has a little a
- 33:54little later on. He says off, we go to find the
- 33:57show and I feel like that was a moment of like, oh, we found the
- 34:00direction, the show is going in. This is yes.
- 34:04That is that do you think that was like the fraggles are all
- 34:07sitting in the writers room and they're all trying to break the
- 34:09story? And then General in is like the
- 34:12head writer. And he's like no.
- 34:13That's that like that one. Let's go with that we found the
- 34:16show. Yeah, definitely.
- 34:18Pretty much. The world's oldest fraggle over
- 34:21here is all this, and he offers to lead everyone to a giant
- 34:25special light, boober says. So we're leaving the safety of
- 34:29our incredibly well lit. Great Hall on the darkest night
- 34:32of the year to follow him. Toria SLI unreliable fraggle on
- 34:36an adventure to find some kind of light and Wembley goes.
- 34:39Yeah, he says just sort of recapping right?
- 34:43So something bad happens you can't say that boober didn't
- 34:45recap again they're in the writers room.
- 34:50They're breaking the story and boobers like well we got to have
- 34:53a recap. We gotta tell everybody what
- 34:54we're doing can just jump in. Yeah that's storytelling 101
- 34:58everybody. The Doozers over here all this
- 35:04and they want to find the special light as well.
- 35:06That point, I thought there was going to be a lot more of a
- 35:09doozer subplot than there actually ends up being yeah.
- 35:12Thanks when we first see him nine minutes in or whatever?
- 35:15I was like. Oh cool.
- 35:16Dudes are time and then there's like me maybe a minute or
- 35:20something. You know Tony.
- 35:21Yeah this is this is like what what you guys were saying before
- 35:25when I was talking about large Marvin for some ungodly reason
- 35:29that Like everyone kind of gets their moment like the like we
- 35:32have the Doozers here because we want the Doozers to make an
- 35:34appearance, but the episodes not really about the Doozers you
- 35:36know or like even the beat like there's not room for a bee pot
- 35:39about the Doozers but we want to make sure that they're
- 35:41represented and like as the fraggles are now like leaving
- 35:44the Great Hall how else you going to get the Doozers in
- 35:47there? Unless they kind of follow the
- 35:50kind of just like chime in to be like.
- 35:51Hey guys were here to as you're walking away from us.
- 35:55Right. The architect user suggest that
- 35:59they should find the light because they can use it to work.
- 36:02And then he says, for a very long time, just as cotter pin
- 36:05and saying forever and he goes oh no.
- 36:08Yours is better. Yeah that was a good as a good.
- 36:10You could tell. And also that was John tartaglia
- 36:12like a bitchy. The script said forever and then
- 36:15he's just messing around because he's John tartaglia he can do
- 36:19that. Yeah.
- 36:21Yeah. And also it's hysterical and the
- 36:23architect is hysterical. Speaking of characters who just
- 36:29got a couple of moments, the fraggles are cutting through the
- 36:31gorgs garden and the world's oldest fraggle.
- 36:36Basically just like shouts and runs across the garden like
- 36:39willy nilly. This is where jandal and
- 36:43starting to show his this like reverence for the world's oldest
- 36:46fraggle. He goes Fearless what?
- 36:49Nikon so I got it I got it. Something yo Jam Dolan talking
- 36:58about the world's oldest fraggle.
- 36:58Has episode sounds exactly like you talking about every
- 37:02celebrity you've ever met. Yeah I can see that.
- 37:06You do that all the time. I have I have this this joke, my
- 37:10wife, Sarah and I have this joke where if we've ever encountered
- 37:14a celebrity like even if it's like we didn't speak to them
- 37:16like you know, like that time that I was on a plane and Jane
- 37:20Krakowski was also on that plane, you know, we always refer
- 37:24to the As like, oh, it's my buddy.
- 37:26Like yeah, yeah, it's my buddy, Jane Krakowski, who we were on
- 37:30that flight together to La. You know what I mean?
- 37:32Right, Joe, you told me the words, it was my buddy, Charles,
- 37:35entertaining, and cheese. Did I say my buddy?
- 37:39Charles David cheese, you're mixing your mixing?
- 37:44And then I said that's the chap. We're just stupid, catchphrases
- 37:51stupid. Catchphrases That's actually
- 37:55what you got me was. Did you know that I met my
- 37:59buddy, Charles entertainment cheese?
- 38:03That's the chap. I hope everyone listening
- 38:09listens to all of the topics podcast, so they can understand
- 38:13every stupid jokes everyone listening to.
- 38:15This is a Johannes superfan. I'm sorry.
- 38:17But wow, and now you're you, if you are a Johanna superfan, then
- 38:21you're my buddy, and I'm your bun.
- 38:22Been one, I've been working since 2004.
- 38:25You know, that what I've talked about the people listening
- 38:27Anthony. Oh, okay, yeah.
- 38:29Now we're all buddies. Yeah.
- 38:34Well that said what else happens on this?
- 38:37Okay, we got to take a moment to appreciate the gorgs outfits.
- 38:42This is incredible at jr. Is wearing a full radish, print
- 38:46onesie with butt flap of course, because that's how you indicate
- 38:52an adorable child character at Christmas time.
- 38:55A onesie with the classic baby Fozzie outfit there and then my
- 39:01own pain. Are in Holiday sweaters with I
- 39:04think radishes on them and they're all stringing.
- 39:07Blow grapes around a stone thing.
- 39:10I couldn't figure out what it was.
- 39:13Okay, question. I didn't I didn't look close
- 39:14enough. But yeah, I was probably this
- 39:16probably as a stand-in for what the fountain was, which got
- 39:20destroyed in the season finale. Yeah.
- 39:23So I can remember, who said it. I feel like in one of the
- 39:27fraggle talk interviews that I did.
- 39:30Someone mention someone was talking about Karen prell and
- 39:33how she has this encyclopedic knowledge for the original
- 39:34series. And she had said something along
- 39:37the lines of like, oh well if you're doing like you know,
- 39:39Juniors pajamas, then like he's got pajamas.
- 39:43It's this radish prints and you know, whatever this is they had,
- 39:45they wouldn't sourced it and found it, it didn't occur to me
- 39:48in that moment that I don't know if we saw jr.
- 39:51In his pajamas in the season and she may have been talking about
- 39:55this special. Yeah, right.
- 40:00So I did, I didn't put that together time, that would have
- 40:03tipped me off. That is there a 14th episode
- 40:06that you're not telling us about?
- 40:09But yes, all those little sweaters are amazing Junior's.
- 40:12Pajamas are amazing, and he's also, I like the Juniors also
- 40:15wearing his crown of the same time, which we don't see him.
- 40:17We're very often. Yeah, I think of the original
- 40:20series, he doesn't have one at all until he inherits it from
- 40:23pot. The very end the end.
- 40:25Yeah. Yeah.
- 40:25You might be right? Yeah?
- 40:26Again, Barry Allen messing up. The timeline.
- 40:30Totally does. It's all does the the gorgs have
- 40:37strung the castle with glow grapes, they're about to turn
- 40:40them on Pas gorgs. So it's kind of Awesome.
- 40:43But beforehand pod gorg is counting down and he goes 32
- 40:48fraggles and then they are about to pounce on the fraggles and
- 40:53then the lights turn on and blind everybody.
- 40:55But what I found amusing about this is that Stu jokes about
- 40:58countdowns where they replace the word with something.
- 41:00That is not a number in this episode, right?
- 41:03Someone that someone thought that was the best joke to make.
- 41:08I thought it was a good running gag.
- 41:10I could have used a third, I needed a rule of three for that
- 41:12one. One or a rule presently pending
- 41:15on just like your coming is. Yeah, just like myth.
- 41:20You know. They only do the myth running
- 41:21game twice. Yeah, they should done with the
- 41:23third time. That's right, so the fraggles
- 41:30continue on. They pass the trash Heap.
- 41:32Who Marjorie is wearing sunglasses?
- 41:35Following guns are also wearing sunglasses.
- 41:37So good, one of them, I camera, which one?
- 41:39Now, one of them has like, like an orange peel on the
- 41:42sunglasses. As well.
- 41:43Yeah, I forgot to know down which one it was.
- 41:46Yeah. It was either file or guns and
- 41:49you'll have to watch the episode to find out.
- 41:51There's some sort of device to remember, which one is
- 41:53following, which one is guns, right?
- 41:54Yep, philo's, pink and guns is gray.
- 41:57Yep. Probably thinking went straight.
- 41:59There you go. Yes, but it's the opposite for
- 42:04remembering, which one was Dave goals?
- 42:05Which one was Richard Hunt? Because I want to say Goals is
- 42:08gray, is gunge but that's not true.
- 42:11It's hunts is They gunge, right? Because I remember that because
- 42:16gunge, the great and glorious, the episode is all about guns
- 42:20and that frigid hunt, like he gets to sing that we're gonna
- 42:23party on Friday and Saturday night.
- 42:25He gets it should hunt all over the place because they're all
- 42:28over the place. Amazing, how lucky we are to
- 42:35have this show in our lives. Right.
- 42:36Right right. So good.
- 42:40This beautiful moment, they're rushing by boober.
- 42:42Says that they're following the world's oldest fraggle to guiche
- 42:45knows where he says. So the I put on the subtitles
- 42:49from what is guiche? I put I put on the subtitles and
- 42:51the subtitle said Goose to Goose not well - I don't know.
- 42:57We should be guiche, it could be Goose, maybe there's something
- 43:00else. Very well could be wrong, I have
- 43:01genuinely have no idea. Like at that point like, why did
- 43:04you why did you say it? If it was going to be so.
- 43:06But if it's hard to understand, it's Goose goose, that actually
- 43:09makes sense to me because I don't know about this Jess.
- 43:13This is that's true but like when we in my house, we have
- 43:18small children. We often substitute goose down
- 43:23or another profanity with the same.
- 43:24Initials for example, her singing, cabinet battle, number
- 43:29two, from Hamilton. Hamilton first line is you must
- 43:33be out of your goose down mind. If you think, you know, so that
- 43:40made sense to me, that, that would be boobers.
- 43:42So, sued for that as well. All right, I'll accept that,
- 43:46I'll accept it. I like also when Jam Dylan
- 43:49passes by, he goes delightful to see you Marjorie.
- 43:53You look trashy and she kind of like fans herself off.
- 43:59Yeah, I mean If gentle and said that to me, I take it as a
- 44:04compliment. Sure.
- 44:05Yeah. Oh, absolutely awesome.
- 44:08Yeah. There's not many fraggles at
- 44:10like ooze sexuality. But like, it's basically just
- 44:14jandralyn, like, as he do. You think Janet Dolan is the
- 44:17sexiest fraggle? Now, I'm trying to think.
- 44:20Like, that's the thing. Yeah, I'm thinking about it, I'm
- 44:25laughing because the truth is that large.
- 44:27Marvin is the sexiest rival. I mean, Well, the question is,
- 44:31how many fraggles are played by daveed Diggs, right?
- 44:35That's a very good point. Yeah, right?
- 44:37Yeah, yeah. That's a very good point.
- 44:39Wow. All right.
- 44:40Well, we don't need to think about this any further because
- 44:41it's just going to get disturbing Marjorie warns, the
- 44:45fraggles about the num num Birds because they eat glow grapes and
- 44:50that that scene just oozes with foreshadowing.
- 44:53All right, of course. Guns even says ominous.
- 44:57Yes. It's true on the red pops back
- 45:01in and I like that she has the trash heaps of.
- 45:03She has any gifts, like something that she can give some
- 45:05Mochi for, for the holiday and you, which, by the way, she
- 45:09should, because she is made up of everything, it should be
- 45:11really easy to get a gift item. Archery, but she goes not a
- 45:13store honey. Yeah, it's great.
- 45:17It's a great line reading. I love that.
- 45:21So the fraggles continue on, they find themselves in another
- 45:23cave. Well first of all these spot mud
- 45:26well the mud bunny which is always nice to see that that
- 45:29dude also from the original episode gone but not forgotten
- 45:34You just kind of runs off chuckling to himself.
- 45:37So he don't get to know if he's named Bud.
- 45:41Well, the mud buddy or if like the guney he's got a new name.
- 45:45Just like some other me. Yeah, that's right.
- 45:48Yes, we should. Well, and we maybe should know
- 45:51because there are people watching this show who maybe
- 45:54wouldn't, recognize mud wall of mud bunny from Fraggle Rock, but
- 45:57wouldn't recognize him as a pirate from Muppet Treasure
- 46:01Island. Yep, that's complete one of
- 46:03those. It's always around in that.
- 46:05Yeah, he's the one that's crying over dead, Tom's dead, right,
- 46:09exactly. Yeah, exactly.
- 46:12So, yeah, it's completely serious here.
- 46:13He is back again. Yeah, that's right.
- 46:17Boober points out. It feels like they've been
- 46:19walking in circles, which makes sense.
- 46:21Because like again, like, they're back in the rock or at
- 46:24least it seems to us like they're back in Fraggle.
- 46:26Rock, why did they cut through the gorgs garden?
- 46:28Why are they pass through the trash Heap?
- 46:29When really, they could have just stayed in the Rock and I
- 46:33think we'll We'll see why in a minute.
- 46:35But in the moment and in boobers eyes, it does actually seem like
- 46:39they're walking in circles did that speak to anyone else of
- 46:44there's Solstice tradition of walking the Labyrinth call him
- 46:52another hands of production. Now, granted the Labyrinth of
- 46:55the movie, Labyrinth is actually amazed because you can get lost
- 46:58in there, lots of dead ends, but in an actual Labyrinth, there's
- 47:00only one path. And the only place you can go.
- 47:03Oh, is to keep going forward and and that is a solstice
- 47:07tradition. And I was like, are they like
- 47:10paying homage to that? Or is that just a coincidence
- 47:12that I'm choosing to see? Good question.
- 47:14Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, yeah.
- 47:17That's something about. I'd never heard of that
- 47:19tradition. Because I also when I think of
- 47:21like if I was going to link Labyrinth or a labyrinth to a
- 47:25holiday, I would think maybe Halloween.
- 47:29But probably just cause I'm thinking of like like like a hay
- 47:32maze. At like an apple picking farm
- 47:35right where you would get your pumpkin for Halloween, you know?
- 47:37But that's what I guess I wasn't saying that.
- 47:39Certainly a holiday thing. Yeah, that's more like a like, a
- 47:44pagan Solstice tradition where like, you know, it's towards the
- 47:47end of the year. You do some reflecting while
- 47:51you're walking about the past year and your intentions for the
- 47:55following year. Sure.
- 47:56Yeah, very glitch. Yeah, sure.
- 47:59Yeah, the world's oldest Fraggle says, this is definitely the
- 48:05right way. Just one quick question, where
- 48:08we going again and this is starting a new running gag here
- 48:14for the rest of the episode where the world's oldest fraggle
- 48:16is apparently very forgetful. I like that.
- 48:20Red goes, we were following you and he goes oh we're yelling
- 48:24now. Oh that's fun.
- 48:30It reminds me of that scene an Anchorman when they're all
- 48:33shouting and Steve Carell's like loud noises.
- 48:37It's like that we're just shopping everybody's just
- 48:39shouting all the time. Yep the world's oldest fraggle
- 48:45shares. A flashback to the first time he
- 48:47saw the lights and we get amazing flashback.
- 48:51Yes, Anthony. Oh man.
- 48:53It's the it's the is my favorite part of the whole episode.
- 48:55It's this flashback credible. Yeah, it's incredible good.
- 48:59How Get what a gift that we got with just specifically this
- 49:03flashback. Can I say two words?
- 49:06Yeah, cave Ink Spot. Saber-tooth Ink Spots.
- 49:12These agree to buy ink spots. So good incredible we came.
- 49:17So we see saber-tooth Ink Spots. We see cave fraggles are
- 49:21basically like fraggle cavemen. There's giant radish.
- 49:25Has a size of the Lord's House. Yeah.
- 49:28Right. Exactly.
- 49:29Okay. They say the world's oldest
- 49:31fraggle claims. Oh back then radishes, were the
- 49:33size of quarks that radish was only about the size of like two
- 49:36or three freckles put together. Yeah but he was so tiny.
- 49:40Okay, so that lets look, we got to talk about this point.
- 49:43Like he's so tiny and also like his memory sucks but like, it's
- 49:46like a get. It's like when you go back to
- 49:47your old high school and you're like, man, this place seems
- 49:49smaller than I remember. It's like, yeah, because you're
- 49:51here. Better human and memory is
- 49:53weird. Okay.
- 49:54But but, but here's the real, the real key to this sequence is
- 49:58how we get baby world's oldest fraggle.
- 50:00We get the world's oldest fraggle.
- 50:04And what credible, what's so funny about it?
- 50:07Is that one of the cave fraggles addresses him The world's
- 50:11youngest fraggle in the, in the steam.
- 50:14Yeah, yeah, yeah. Which I wonder is.
- 50:16Every time a new fraggle is born.
- 50:18They get to be called that. Hi everyone.
- 50:22Good, next one comes along it being the world's youngest
- 50:24Frank, really like that. That's it.
- 50:26Also indicates that like for some reason he was never given a
- 50:29proper name. He was always addressed
- 50:32regarding his age. So do you think do you think
- 50:34that between the like him being the newest fraggle, born or
- 50:40hatched to him being the oldest fraggle?
- 50:44He was like the world's Middle East fraggle.
- 50:47The world's most middle-aged Fraggle More world's medalist
- 50:50fraggle. Yeah, medalist is definitely a
- 50:53work nowadays. Yes, absolutely.
- 50:56He he says I was just the world's youngest fraggle back
- 51:00then, clear-eyed and fresh bearded.
- 51:02And red says, wait, he still had a beard, he goes no questions.
- 51:05This is my flashback. Yeah, that rules and the little,
- 51:09the little beard on the world's. Youngest Franco is adorable.
- 51:14The whole world's a and the giant eyes?
- 51:17And instead of carrying a staff he's carrying Little at all.
- 51:22God, it's just the, the character design for that is
- 51:26amazing. I mean, baby Yoda who, right?
- 51:29Oh yeah, right. Well, you know, who is
- 51:31you-know-who is Giant Eyes? Kind of reminded me?
- 51:33Of this is baby. Dory in Finding Dory.
- 51:37Yeah, yeah, absolutely. I could see that movie, that I
- 51:41saw about 50 times, when Iris was like three and four.
- 51:44I mean, we watched, it was like all we did was watch.
- 51:46Yeah, baby. Yeah.
- 51:47Back then, that's a, that's a good.
- 51:51Much like a fraggle, that is a character who had big eyes in
- 51:54the first place and then with these short, as a baby has even
- 51:57larger eyes. So that's what, yeah?
- 52:00So this is another way that the the timeline has changed.
- 52:05Because in this timeline, they knew about radishes from the
- 52:10get-go and in the original series, Matt.
- 52:12Discovers them when he discovers the gorgs garden when he's a
- 52:16child. Yeah, yeah.
- 52:19Do you think they were even doing this before that?
- 52:21And the time with, I'm going to throw out a crazy theory is
- 52:25traveling. Matt secretly older than the
- 52:27world's oldest fraggle. Could that have taken place
- 52:30before this flashback? I was thinking Global wasn't a
- 52:34caveman but there but we also know there's different fraggle
- 52:38tribes, you know, this might just get a specific group of
- 52:42cave fraggles. I was.
- 52:44Yeah, what if this is an example of the Worlds This fraggle being
- 52:51fearful again and like, oh, of course, we had radishes back
- 52:54then when they actually didn't or they did have radishes back
- 52:58then and then everyone forgot about them until Matt discovered
- 53:01them again. Yeah, he's definitely like an
- 53:03unreliable narrator. Like the think that's clear
- 53:06forever doesn't have guys. I think both of those guys are
- 53:08unreliable narrators though, to. That's true.
- 53:11Like, maybe they've goals did goals is just an unreliable
- 53:15narrator. That's perfect.
- 53:26Damn. But last time I checked in the
- 53:42corner, Wow example. Yeah, you know baby Gonzo had a
- 53:52clear memory of being raised by his parents but adult Gonzo was
- 53:58an alien or something. Okay let's move on just real
- 54:03quickly and another tiny indicator of being ancient
- 54:08times. Is that in addition to the
- 54:10saber-tooth Ink Spots, you know, the little puppets that Kind of
- 54:14look like, you know, cat sized elephants.
- 54:17This one is now looking like a miniature woolly mammoth.
- 54:20Yeah. And I want to be able to go to
- 54:22build a bear and make why? Yeah that little guy he's like
- 54:28yeah I spotted him I forgot about him already because it was
- 54:31so so busy looking they'll say or do things spots.
- 54:34Yeah rules I love. That is.
- 54:36Why don't we have Ink Spots that you can buy as a toy.
- 54:39Like I don't understand this world that I can't own a name
- 54:43spot. Yeah, and then like commission
- 54:45somebody to make you an Ink Spot you probably.
- 54:47Yeah, I really should. Yeah.
- 54:48All right. I'm working on those people.
- 54:50Yeah. Yeah, we'll call in a couple
- 54:52favors so in this flashback, the world's youngest fraggle wanders
- 54:58through a cave and he looks up and sees what he describes as a
- 55:02million Wiggler's in the goopy goop.
- 55:06And of course, none of this makes any sense.
- 55:09The fraggles don't get it but Jim dalen in Santa Fe Yeah.
- 55:14Yeah. Right.
- 55:14The Fanboy Gamble and has faith that this means something.
- 55:18He says, maybe something we lost sight of and world's oldest
- 55:22fraggle, says exactly. Now does anyone know where we're
- 55:25going? Cuz he's still lost.
- 55:28He doesn't know where he's going.
- 55:29He's so old you guys. So he's the same age as Fraggle.
- 55:34Rock of jab. That's, that's true.
- 55:37Yeah. And we also got a good line
- 55:38reading from Mochi, where she goes.
- 55:40I don't mean to be negative, especially on my the lights, but
- 55:43this guy has no idea where he's going.
- 55:47Yeah, that's pretty funny. Yeah, that's good stuff.
- 55:49So, the other thing I wanted to mention about world's youngest
- 55:51fraggle. This there was like a split
- 55:53second of him in one of the The trailers for, for the season of
- 55:59the show. So that was one of the things
- 56:01that is that a muppet fan had spotted.
- 56:03And when the season was over went, ah, where did that shot
- 56:08come from week? We saw a baby world's oldest
- 56:10fraggle and it was not in the show, so we kind of had a
- 56:13feeling, there was more coming, that was already filmed.
- 56:17So that was that was clue. Number one, clue number two, for
- 56:21me at least and no one else, no, explain that in a second came up
- 56:24in this next sequence because Red says it feels like we're
- 56:27following gobos Uncle Matt and if so of course gobos like oh so
- 56:31we'll read the next postcard and 0 which by the way also like of
- 56:38course following the world's oldest fraggle.
- 56:40Feels like following Uncle Matt because they're both made the
- 56:44perfect guy red red figured out before the rest of us.
- 56:49Oh and then Gobo starts reading dear, nephew Gobo, that's a g,
- 56:53the handwriting's messy. I like that.
- 56:57And then yeah. We got the sequence of like Matt
- 56:59is like sneaking into people's houses.
- 57:01Oh yeah. You guys get to my favorite line
- 57:02of that which is Gobo says he's going to read the postcard or
- 57:06whatever because read write it up and read says, don't put that
- 57:09on me, I think is really funny. That's good stuff because
- 57:16breads, like, complete, hatred, and dismissal of Matt has always
- 57:20been one of my favorite things about Fraggle Rock.
- 57:23Yeah and I love that. They loved it.
- 57:25They kept it up in the new show. I need to.
- 57:27I need a Supercut of all the red acting disgusted at Matt Matt's
- 57:32post cards. Yeah, that needs to happen.
- 57:36So in the postcard, Matt is sneaking into people's homes and
- 57:39watching them, celebrate different holidays.
- 57:41Most of them are candle-lighting holidays, we see to Ali and
- 57:44Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. See people lighting Christmas
- 57:47tree and it ends with him being caught by the family that
- 57:53celebrating Diwali. And then, Dump the whole plate
- 57:55of food directly into his mouth. Happy holidays, everybody.
- 57:58That's pretty funny. Well, get something like this, I
- 58:02liked it because it felt like the original the original.
- 58:06This is not a remake of bezel Fraggle Rock.
- 58:08Buzzer Fraggle Rock. The Dock and sprocket subplot is
- 58:11about them trying to celebrate it all different.
- 58:13Winter holidays, a shrew? Yeah.
- 58:15So so I really like that. That's what Matt's post Carter
- 58:19was about, you know. Yeah.
- 58:20And you know for someone like me who like I was I was raised
- 58:24Jewish. So we're Always kind of like
- 58:25looking for the Hanukkah references and all these
- 58:27Christmases and and generic holiday specials.
- 58:30So like this to me was also the Bob saying that mr.
- 58:34Hooper happy Hanukkah moments, you know, I'm just gonna throw
- 58:39you a little bone there, you know, for if you celebrate the
- 58:42other thing, the others but but everything is an other two
- 58:46fraggles because they're celebrating my the lights, they
- 58:49don't know what Christmas is. Unless they remembered meeting,
- 58:52Kermit Kermit, Robin Robin. That's right.
- 58:57So the the other clue to me again, and no one else, that
- 59:02that there was a bonus episode coming of Fraggle Rock, that was
- 59:06already filmed when I was doing one of the fraggle, talk
- 59:11interviews. I was talking to us for the
- 59:14finale, so the previous episode to this one.
- 59:19I was talking to John tartaglia and Hello, Stanford.
- 59:22And I asked them, what was the last thing that was filmed.
- 59:26And the told me I do remember what their answer was.
- 59:29But then Halle Stanford corrected herself and said, oh
- 59:32no, the last thing that was filmed was the traveling Matt
- 59:35where he's celebrating Christmas and after the interview was over
- 59:40she said would you mind cutting that from the interview we're
- 59:45not allowed to talk about that yet?
- 59:47And I went yes, that's perfectly fine.
- 59:48So so I was like I think there's more Or coming.
- 59:52Hmm. They could neither confirm nor
- 59:54deny. So yeah.
- 59:57Now the Secret's out. So now I finally got this off my
- 1:00:00chest. You don't know how good this
- 1:00:01feels. So while they've been read this
- 1:00:07postcard, the world's oldest fraggle, has wandered off once
- 1:00:10again, but they say, don't worry.
- 1:00:12It's not like they're lost in the dark.
- 1:00:13They got their glow grapes. And then as if checkoff had
- 1:00:18heard them from Beyond the Grave, The num num Birds show up
- 1:00:23and they take the grapes and it's presumably, eat them off
- 1:00:26screen and it becomes very, very dark.
- 1:00:30I apologize for it. Sorry.
- 1:00:32We're very hungry. This time of year.
- 1:00:34Sorry? Yeah it's nice.
- 1:00:37Yeah, that's pretty good. So they could have like left
- 1:00:39them one but sure. Yeah.
- 1:00:41I guess they were really hungry. You're just so hungry.
- 1:00:45I don't know what else num num, birds eat, maybe there's nothing
- 1:00:48else. Maybe this is the one time of
- 1:00:49year that they can eat anything. So they eat think, you know,
- 1:00:53maybe they maybe they eat The Grapes of generosity and then
- 1:00:57oh, Wow. Wow guys, love grapes.
- 1:01:05They're always like you got any grapes?
- 1:01:09No, this is a lemonade stand. No, okay, we're getting way off.
- 1:01:15Okay, so the so it's very dark. Red is kind of scared.
- 1:01:20Some Mochi goes in to give her a hug, but of course, she can't
- 1:01:23see anything. So, she hugs Jam Dolan, which is
- 1:01:25adorable. Yeah.
- 1:01:28Red admits to Not getting Mochi a gift.
- 1:01:31So, remote key goes in for another hug.
- 1:01:33And once again, hugs jammed Alan.
- 1:01:35It's great, could have used a third one.
- 1:01:38Could use the rule of three and that joke, but we only got two.
- 1:01:41That's okay. Only do the role of to on
- 1:01:43Fraggle Rock. That's right.
- 1:01:44That's how they do things in fraggle.
- 1:01:47Well, because remember when they were counting down, they
- 1:01:48replaced 3v with pickle so they just don't have the concept of
- 1:01:52three. Oh my gosh.
- 1:01:54Whoa, there you go. Wow!
- 1:01:58Oh, you just blew my mind? Mind.
- 1:02:00Wow. All right.
- 1:02:01All right, now I'm looking for it.
- 1:02:04I'm going to look to see if they ever mention.
- 1:02:05The number three in this series. I'm sure they must have will
- 1:02:10find out. All right, we're gonna.
- 1:02:11All right, we're going to keep track now.
- 1:02:13So all the fraggles seem to feel kind of guilty and responsible,
- 1:02:16because they all wished to big and like, this is what Joe did
- 1:02:19you go? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:21Give me one and give me to cover me with my Kangoo.
- 1:02:24Give me three and give me, four smother me with got canned corn.
- 1:02:29Because if you count to three, you can see this timeline or all
- 1:02:33right. There you go, that's true.
- 1:02:34Yeah. Anyway, maybe get maybe Barry
- 1:02:37Allen went back in time to save his mom.
- 1:02:39Another number three doesn't exist eradicated the number
- 1:02:42three. That's right.
- 1:02:45Anyway, so all the yeah. It's like she never got a
- 1:02:51present for Mochi. Everyone's like admitting the
- 1:02:54thing, they secretly feel bad about and Wembley, of course,
- 1:02:58Wembley is the first To be like, is this, my fault for wishing to
- 1:03:01big and like that, bro? My heart like oh buddy.
- 1:03:05Oh buddy. And then we finally get to hear
- 1:03:08what Mochi wish for like I wish for listen connection but I get
- 1:03:12that all the time with you guys and then boober.
- 1:03:16Oh my God. You're like no, no guys, this
- 1:03:18one's on me. I shouldn't have wished to make
- 1:03:20it through the night. I got greedy.
- 1:03:23Oh, buddy. Oh buddy.
- 1:03:25We'll talk about that little buddy.
- 1:03:27Are you okay? And that's one of those things.
- 1:03:31That's one of the things that has always been.
- 1:03:33So great about Fraggle Rock, though.
- 1:03:35Is that like ever-present sense of existential dread, right?
- 1:03:40Mmm-hmm, yeah, this is a show for children.
- 1:03:43That has like multiple songs. I there's a song where go below
- 1:03:48has things the line. I summed, I know that nothing's
- 1:03:51made of steel. I sometimes think that nothing's
- 1:03:55real, right? And that's just like one random
- 1:03:57set, right? It's like Dixie.
- 1:03:59Waylon is like, a funeral dirge can.
- 1:04:01Oh yeah. Right.
- 1:04:01You know, this million of. So it's George just great.
- 1:04:06That they keep that, like that's one of those things that could
- 1:04:08have so easily not been present it.
- 1:04:11When they brought the show back, you know, like sand off some of
- 1:04:14those darker edges, I really appreciate that.
- 1:04:17They gave that existential dread to booper, because in the
- 1:04:21original series, like, obviously, he had that he had a
- 1:04:23lot of superstitions, he also had a lot of fear of disease and
- 1:04:28joy. Germs.
- 1:04:30And I get why the reboot chose to make a decision?
- 1:04:34Hey maybe let's not have boober. Have that particular fear.
- 1:04:41That seem very reasonable choice to make in a global pandemic,
- 1:04:48right? Yeah.
- 1:04:51Yeah, exactly. We still have to have boober be
- 1:04:54afraid of something and maybe afraid of everything sometimes.
- 1:05:00Times. Yeah, no, you're totally right.
- 1:05:03I didn't think about that with the germs.
- 1:05:04It's a really good observation and it's interesting that like,
- 1:05:08you know, boobers dread is definitely played it more as a
- 1:05:12joke than not. But the so I watched this
- 1:05:15episode twice in preparation for this.
- 1:05:17This podcast, the first time I watched it, I definitely clock
- 1:05:20that it was an interesting line but it didn't I didn't clock
- 1:05:23that it was a joke like because they're all being like Oh what
- 1:05:25if it's my fault or what it was my fault.
- 1:05:27He's like, yeah, where was my fault too?
- 1:05:28And you're like, yeah, boober what if it was And it was until
- 1:05:31the same time I'm like, oh no, that's actually really funny
- 1:05:33line that, you know, he's like like awesome.
- 1:05:35I've I shouldn't have wished that we survived, you know.
- 1:05:40Yeah. So like like there's that that
- 1:05:42moroseness to boober, not like you can't really tell if it's a
- 1:05:46joke or not and like, it's not depressing, but it's also not
- 1:05:50too funny. It's not too goofy that he's
- 1:05:54kind of a sad sack when it comes to this stuff.
- 1:05:57I don't know. It's something a lot to unpack
- 1:05:59with it with. Uber, so, gentle and points out
- 1:06:02that the problem is that they've been trying to push the darkness
- 1:06:05out with the lights, but there can't be any light without dark.
- 1:06:09So maybe, instead of pushing these should embrace the dark,
- 1:06:12which is a very nice sentiment. I'm not really sure what that
- 1:06:15means. And Beth you mentioned this at
- 1:06:17the top of the episode, so maybe you can explain it to me.
- 1:06:21It reminded to be strongly of class.
- 1:06:24I took at my weirdo, hippie liberal arts college with no.
- 1:06:30Grades or tests or majors. And in one class, I went to that
- 1:06:36was literally called a sense of wonder.
- 1:06:40We together. I'm not making this up just like
- 1:06:50in a class where you're supposed to sit around and wonder things.
- 1:06:54So not Wonder hard enough. Well yeah, there you go.
- 1:06:58Fair enough. We put on a celebration of
- 1:07:04Darkness at at the winter solstice.
- 1:07:07And I was suggesting, you know, when people were like putting
- 1:07:12ideas together, I was like, oh I'm thinking of like St.
- 1:07:15Lucia day cuz my, you know, my grandmother is Swedish and he
- 1:07:22was like, okay but we are we don't want to talk about the
- 1:07:26holidays where it's like you know, the return of the light
- 1:07:30quite yet. We want to sit in that darkness
- 1:07:33and like really understand that and ended up putting together
- 1:07:39some really cool things like a few students like re-enacted The
- 1:07:44Myth of the Goddess figure. If I'm gonna I think she's from
- 1:07:49the, the Gilgamesh epic and One person like I recited a Mary
- 1:07:58Oliver poem and then we had someone leading Us in singing
- 1:08:04together. You know that song There is a
- 1:08:08crack in everything. That's how the light gets in,
- 1:08:12you know that song? I don't know.
- 1:08:14Oh, come on. You guys my life.
- 1:08:17So when read said so they're saying like, oh yes, that you
- 1:08:20have to embrace the dark and then Brett says, so the light
- 1:08:23can come back. And I was like, Bingo, there it
- 1:08:26is. Yeah, well so here's the
- 1:08:29difference between you and me. Been yours was very thoughtful
- 1:08:33and philosophical and I'm just going to reference Pixar again,
- 1:08:38it reminds me of it's just reminded me of inside out, you
- 1:08:42know how like Jordan wants everything to be happy all the
- 1:08:45time and then the lesson is like you need sadness or happiness,
- 1:08:49isn't really happiness. You know, I mean inside out a
- 1:08:52super thoughtful and build it is.
- 1:08:54It is. But I just I feel bad that
- 1:08:56earlier I'm like This baby looks like baby Dory.
- 1:09:01This lesson reminds me of inside out, you know, But, but, here's
- 1:09:07my question though, I understand.
- 1:09:09We're what you're saying about the ballots, like, oh yes, we
- 1:09:12need to, like, embrace the darkness, like two little bit of
- 1:09:14light can come in, then the like can be back in our lives and
- 1:09:17etcetera, etcetera. But in the scope of this
- 1:09:22episode, the lights are out there, all kind of miserable and
- 1:09:26they all just go, oh, what? If we need to embrace the
- 1:09:28darkness and then the lights, turn on.
- 1:09:30It's like I don't want feel like the restaurant that isn't
- 1:09:33actively embracing Darkness. But I thought it was that
- 1:09:37because then we should get it again with the gorge where,
- 1:09:38like, all their lights go off and then they can see the
- 1:09:41Northern Lights. Yeah.
- 1:09:43And I think that's what it's about, right?
- 1:09:44It's like, we don't know, isolates, the artificial lights
- 1:09:47aren't as powerful as the as the northern lights that we see in
- 1:09:51the sky. And if we didn't, if we didn't
- 1:09:53have the darkness, we wouldn't have seen it, right?
- 1:09:55So what you're saying is literally, they wouldn't have
- 1:09:57been able to see the lights that were about to mention if they
- 1:10:01hadn't shut off their their glow crepes.
- 1:10:06Right. Yes.
- 1:10:06Yeah. Okay.
- 1:10:08Alright, I'll accept that only true for the gorgs, but but I
- 1:10:11also agree with you Joe that I don't think this Theme was as
- 1:10:16strong as it could have been. I felt like they could have
- 1:10:19spent a little more time. Really having the characters
- 1:10:25like, figure out what? Embracing the darkness means to
- 1:10:28them, and why it's important to them.
- 1:10:29And then the light can come back.
- 1:10:31And also throw this out there, I think it was a bit of a cheat to
- 1:10:34have jammed all, and be the one to tell them that because if
- 1:10:37this was cantus, cantus, would have said something really
- 1:10:40cryptic and they would have been like Candace, what are you
- 1:10:42talking about? Hey, got a second.
- 1:10:45I I think what you're trying to say is X, Y and Z but instead
- 1:10:47Camden was like, here are the answers to the test and they
- 1:10:50were like I think I figured it out in general is like yeah,
- 1:10:54yeah. Yeah, it's got to be really hard
- 1:10:58to write for Gamblin because he's like kind of a Legacy
- 1:11:04character but kind of not Brent. Yeah.
- 1:11:07Kind of a totally new character and kind of not and it would
- 1:11:12have helped in this case if he was a little bit more cryptic or
- 1:11:17aloof or I don't know what it is but not quite so like I hate to
- 1:11:21say normal because it's not really a normalcy thing, but
- 1:11:23like it kind of is like he's He can be very straightforward if
- 1:11:26you wants to be. Like he can say, like, he can
- 1:11:29say what he wants to say without being without it being
- 1:11:32misconstrued. Yeah.
- 1:11:34Maybe they could have taken it in some direction that made it
- 1:11:37so like, yeah, he's trying his hardest to say the thing he
- 1:11:40wants to say but the fraggles are going to do a little bit of
- 1:11:42work to kind of meet him halfway.
- 1:11:46Yeah, that's what I like cantus at his.
- 1:11:49Most infuriating moments was just bizarre and inscrutable but
- 1:11:52it has best moments. He was like That kind of
- 1:11:56parenting where you're just kind of letting the kid figure things
- 1:12:00out on their own and you could give them the answer.
- 1:12:02You could show them the answer but that's not the point right?
- 1:12:09Everything's a teachable moment. So to cantus.
- 1:12:14Like you'll figure it out on your own right?
- 1:12:16I mean like we might all freeze to death but like you'll figure
- 1:12:19it out, you'll do the right thing, right?
- 1:12:23Yeah. Well in any case, the lights to
- 1:12:26go out and as we said they spot a light coming from a nearby
- 1:12:29cave. The world's oldest fraggle is
- 1:12:31there and he leads them out to a clearing.
- 1:12:34We first see what looks like some Christmas real trees and
- 1:12:37some snow? Yes, please.
- 1:12:40So he has this line. Am I right?
- 1:12:44He sees them again, like, oh, the group is reunited and he
- 1:12:46says, am I with you? Or are you with me and gentle
- 1:12:49and says, you know, I think we're all together.
- 1:12:52Yeah. Anyone else get a bills
- 1:12:54reference out of that? Hmm.
- 1:12:56I did now. Wow.
- 1:12:58Did it was? I Am The Walrus.
- 1:13:00Absolutely sure. Yeah, I can see it.
- 1:13:02I didn't think of it but I can see it now.
- 1:13:03Do you say it? Wow, awesome.
- 1:13:06Gentlemen is always felt very like late Beatles to me and her
- 1:13:11think about this. You guys 1 + 1 + 1 or 3 is
- 1:13:16pickles. It's pickles.
- 1:13:18You guys. It is, so, yeah, so they go on
- 1:13:24to this clearing, it's snowy out there, it's cold and they look
- 1:13:28up and there's like an aurora borealis happening in the sky
- 1:13:33above them. It's beautiful, you know, light
- 1:13:37in the sky, its dancing around. And, as the world's oldest
- 1:13:40fraggle said, it's a million Wiggler's in the goopy goop.
- 1:13:45Which also earned him Dora - like yeah, I knew I could.
- 1:13:48Yeah. My guy, he says, I knew that
- 1:13:50made sense when he said that earlier, and he says an honorary
- 1:13:54nephew. Always knows.
- 1:13:56Yeah, I ruin. What, what, what?
- 1:14:00Well, just like, you get to decide that whatever celebrity
- 1:14:03you pass. By is your buddy.
- 1:14:05Jen blind has decided this guy's my uncle.
- 1:14:08Yeah, I guess that's Bonkers though because we've never heard
- 1:14:13of such a thing as an Honorary nephew on Fraggle, Rock only a
- 1:14:16real method and even the world's oldest fraggle.
- 1:14:20Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:14:21Right joke. Is that jam?
- 1:14:22Dylan just invented honorary nephew I guess.
- 1:14:24Yeah. What's also interesting is like
- 1:14:27so we're recording this just a like a day or so I think after
- 1:14:32our buddy Ryan row are real buddy.
- 1:14:34Brian Rowe posted his interview with traveling, Matt on tough
- 1:14:38pigs. And he's, you know, says, you
- 1:14:42know, thank you for letting me, call you Call traveling that.
- 1:14:45So Ryan is kind of an honorary nephew to the real traveling
- 1:14:49Matt if you think about it. Yeah, that's pretty good
- 1:14:51solutely. Yeah, not bad.
- 1:14:54But what? I like about the whole million
- 1:14:56wigglers in the goopy goop thing is it reminds us the fraggles?
- 1:15:00Don't normally see sky. Like I'm also in the gorgs
- 1:15:03garden or they're like traveling match out going into outer
- 1:15:06space. Like he never see the sky.
- 1:15:08That's just the goopy goopy to them.
- 1:15:12Now, in the original series, there's an episode, where Mochi
- 1:15:16goes to see the aurora frag, Lee Alice, which appears to be
- 1:15:22within a cave, and we don't know what's causing it or if it's at
- 1:15:28all related to the Aurora Borealis that we know in outer
- 1:15:32space. But this is clearly outer space
- 1:15:35in this version, right? Because, well, well, we'll get
- 1:15:39to the Y as I do want to save that for the The ends.
- 1:15:41But let's let's wrap up red and mokey's story line here where
- 1:15:46Reds apologizing for not giving bokya gifts, but she gives her
- 1:15:49this wonderful compliment. She says, she's the most amazing
- 1:15:51one-of-a-kind fraggle. She's ever met.
- 1:15:53So glad she's our best friends mokey gives her this big hug
- 1:15:57doesn't hug, jambul jammed all in this time that would've been
- 1:15:59the rule of three gentle and like showed up in between them
- 1:16:02and ruined their moment. But no she hugs read says the
- 1:16:05best gift she ever got. And she got her wish which was
- 1:16:08connection. Gee, I don't know.
- 1:16:10She got the Bliss. You got the connection?
- 1:16:13And red got her wish because she got a great gift for a mochi.
- 1:16:18And then boober, we learn what their love languages are.
- 1:16:21That's true. I'm like, which is gifts and
- 1:16:23Red's. Love language is words of
- 1:16:25affirmation. Well then then boober pops up
- 1:16:28behind them and says and I survived that's his love
- 1:16:34language. His lovely was just survival, he
- 1:16:38did it. Good job buddy.
- 1:16:41Wembley, swish, swish obviously came true, he got to see the
- 1:16:44most Magical Lights and Fraggle Rock.
- 1:16:46And then we find out what gobos wish.
- 1:16:47It was it was for Wembley to get his wish.
- 1:16:50It's a bit of a cheat but I'll accept it.
- 1:16:53So this is when we get our second song of the episode, it's
- 1:16:56the song Magic be with you, it's from the original series.
- 1:17:00The series finale change of address.
- 1:17:03Hell yeah, so I went into this convinced that they were going
- 1:17:06to reuse. There's a rhythm, is one of the
- 1:17:10battles in Fraggle Rock from the other holiday episode because it
- 1:17:13never occurred to me, they might use anything else.
- 1:17:15And when I heard Jim dalen, To sing this song.
- 1:17:19Instead I started crying. I was like they got me, they got
- 1:17:25me. Yeah, not well.
- 1:17:28So after after I watched it the first time I did go back and
- 1:17:31watch just just this clip from change of address that's when I
- 1:17:36got my little cry out because that's such a good that's finale
- 1:17:41and that choral arrangement in visual Graphics is oh it's
- 1:17:44unbelievable. Yeah yeah I mean both of these
- 1:17:47Arrangements are terrifically. The harmonies in this one with,
- 1:17:50you know, like Mochi and Gobo and gentlemen, singing, it's
- 1:17:53fantastic. But what's interesting to me is
- 1:17:57like them choosing a song from the series finale.
- 1:18:00Kind of made me think I wonder if they wanted this to work,
- 1:18:04just in case it was the series finale.
- 1:18:06You know what I mean? That's exactly what I thought
- 1:18:08that like, it's a miracle that the show happened at all and
- 1:18:12just in case we don't get any more, we want to make sure that
- 1:18:17we pay full homage and and go out with not a bang but like
- 1:18:24that Perfect magic that the original series did and they
- 1:18:29somehow recaptured. Absolutely Wembley asks, do you
- 1:18:36think everyone in the universe can see this and we kind of get
- 1:18:39a glimpse of everyone else seeing this Aurora, it's we see
- 1:18:43the Doozers. They are now officially taking a
- 1:18:46break from working, so they could sit and enjoy these
- 1:18:47lights, the gorgs, their glow, great lights, and on their
- 1:18:52Castle, kind of burnout. But then they look up and see
- 1:18:56the light that is a sweet little moment.
- 1:18:58With Junior and PAs, gorg kind of bonding which I don't really
- 1:19:01see in the series because Papa Gorges such a jerk the whole
- 1:19:05time. Yeah.
- 1:19:07And it's actually it's a continuation of that
- 1:19:09relationship that like that very unhealthy relationship that was
- 1:19:13established in the rest of back to the rock that like Pas gorg
- 1:19:18is expecting so much out of jr. And then jr.
- 1:19:23Fails to meet those expectations and then Posse is this
- 1:19:27incredible light display that just happens to be there.
- 1:19:30And Triggers like you know what? I'm finding credit with this.
- 1:19:34That's okay. Yes, we do you think that the
- 1:19:37PHA do the Pug org thinks that Junior created the Aurora
- 1:19:41Borealis? Oh yes.
- 1:19:43Because he says yeah, that'll do.
- 1:19:45Good job, son. Good chance.
- 1:19:47We just say good job song. Yeah, it was like that'll do
- 1:19:51donkey. That'll do the.
- 1:19:57So we also get our first and only glimpse of Kit and Doc in
- 1:20:02this episode there on the zoom call together as the Aurora's
- 1:20:07going over the workshop. Doc is visiting her dog allergic
- 1:20:12grandma and sprockets being Washed by mrs.
- 1:20:15Shimmelfinney. The whole thing kind of feels
- 1:20:17like a bit of an afterthought, obviously, with Doc coming in on
- 1:20:20the screen. I feel like Lily Cooper must
- 1:20:25just not have been available, right?
- 1:20:27That's the. So, the question is, is that at
- 1:20:29what point in production that they realize that they were
- 1:20:31going to Doing this bonus episode because they knew from
- 1:20:33the get-go, there's no reason they couldn't have had Lily
- 1:20:35Cooper, do a very quick seamless problem there.
- 1:20:38Yeah. But if they realize part like
- 1:20:39partway through, Apple was like, hey, we want to order one more
- 1:20:42episode, then it's like well Lily, Cooper filmed, we know
- 1:20:45from from the interviews we've done on this.
- 1:20:46This podcast really Cooper filmed all of the dock and
- 1:20:49sprocket scenes before anything else was the first thing they
- 1:20:53did. So it does make more sense to
- 1:20:55say like okay we're not going to fly her all the way from New
- 1:20:57York to Calgary for literally 30 seconds on.
- 1:21:01Murrah. So let's get her on zoom and
- 1:21:03will incorporate that in like that and that's fine.
- 1:21:05It's not a big deal. It is one scene it's but it is
- 1:21:09very sad. Like it's very sad to me the
- 1:21:12idea that Dawkins sprocket or not spending the holidays
- 1:21:15together. You know, and in universities
- 1:21:18very sad in like like, like Doyle list I get it.
- 1:21:23Like you say Lil yeah, we're probably just couldn't make it
- 1:21:26but like walk sounion, I don't know, man, I don't want to think
- 1:21:29about Dawkins frak. It being separated.
- 1:21:31At Christmas, Ann's it kind of undercuts the purpose of having
- 1:21:36the scene at all, which is they should be enjoying the Aurora
- 1:21:40and they're not like I only sprocket even acknowledges it.
- 1:21:44So like it's really just kind of attacked on like we're all
- 1:21:46spending the holidays together one way or another even if it's
- 1:21:49virtual which is also something that will a lot of us have had
- 1:21:51to do the last few years. Well, that's true.
- 1:21:54Look if each outside and watching it together that could
- 1:21:58have been really cool. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:22:01Yeah. Like little bit like we're
- 1:22:02experiencing it together but separately.
- 1:22:06Right right. Well I'm also kind of conflicted
- 1:22:08because like you say Joe of it doesn't quite fit the theme, it
- 1:22:14feels a little out of the place, like maybe they could have just
- 1:22:16not done it, but on the other hand, every other episode of 30
- 1:22:20Rock, has darkened Sprocket in it.
- 1:22:21So yes, I would be very sad if they didn't show up at all.
- 1:22:27I completely agree. I'm and I deferred that they do
- 1:22:29it this way than not at all. Not at all.
- 1:22:33Yeah, the world's Fraggle and behind him and Ink Spot are
- 1:22:38looking up at the lights and they get a little flashback to
- 1:22:41the first time, the when he was the world's youngest fraggle,
- 1:22:44when he saw the lights and behind him, the Ink Spot has
- 1:22:49turned into a saber-tooth things spot for for a moment, which is
- 1:22:52adorable. Yeah, I love it.
- 1:22:55Uh, God again, what a gift to get those two who give me that,
- 1:23:00give me that world's youngest fraggle merchandise and that
- 1:23:02Inkspot merchandise, Henson company get on it.
- 1:23:06It was such a beautiful poignant moment of Wonder to end on and
- 1:23:11then instead they end on a joke, the end of the track.
- 1:23:16We I do want to say before we get to that joke.
- 1:23:18Yeah we one character who we don't see looking up at the
- 1:23:21lights. Where's Coop?
- 1:23:24Just ask him where Cooper's we're looking up at those
- 1:23:27lights. No, but you're right.
- 1:23:30We do we do get so we get this great shot where we Zoom back
- 1:23:34from, where the fraggles are we see where they actually are like
- 1:23:38on Earth which is like they're in a forest looking up at the
- 1:23:42lights. There in front of a big
- 1:23:43mountain, I wonder if they're if this is a real mountain like if
- 1:23:47someone could actually figure out like where on Earth this
- 1:23:50fraggle whole has led to that might be possible or might be
- 1:23:54fake. There must be able to recognize.
- 1:23:56Hey I know that mountain. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:24:00And then boober says, so is now a good time for Route cake.
- 1:24:03And then all that, all that tension is just released.
- 1:24:07Yeah, I like that joke, though. I think it's fine.
- 1:24:11I think it would've been fun if in unison, after he said that
- 1:24:13are all the other fraggles go boober and then you're looking
- 1:24:17at wobb, wobb wobb, I think it would have been fun if all the
- 1:24:21fraggles said, yes, it's route cake time and then Pee-wee
- 1:24:27Herman shows up and he's like, I made a hole.
- 1:24:29Wall out of Reggae do hollow the route cake.
- 1:24:32Paul Reubens could voice of wrangle.
- 1:24:34That would become the amazing. Yeah, no reason not to.
- 1:24:37Yeah, so that brings us to the end of this episode do.
- 1:24:41Either of you, have any further, thoughts about neither the
- 1:24:45lights Just that now that I'm bummed out that I'm going to
- 1:24:49have to try and make up a recipe for root cake and I hate beets.
- 1:24:56Is there another route that you could use?
- 1:24:58Can you carrots or something? Oh, of course.
- 1:25:00Yeah maybe I'll make the Beats optional, right?
- 1:25:03Turnips and whatnot. Radishes are Roots.
- 1:25:06There you go, make a radish cake and then to stick article,
- 1:25:10that's ah, that was so good. Thank you important.
- 1:25:17Give journalism in my opinion, completely agree.
- 1:25:19Yes, I agree. Yes.
- 1:25:22Well, everyone go check out, Beth's article about the about
- 1:25:26creating doozer sticks to metal. This is something that I've been
- 1:25:31thinking about doing for years and now I finally had a platform
- 1:25:36on which let's do it. That's one of those things.
- 1:25:38Like it was definitely one of those articles that I read and I
- 1:25:40was just like, this is why tough pigs exist like, is for stuff
- 1:25:45like this, you know? Yeah.
- 1:25:47Yeah, so yeah. One thing I did want to say
- 1:25:50about this episode is, it's just a reminder, there are so many
- 1:25:54moments that just look so gorgeous.
- 1:25:57Mmm, and it's such a we talked about how about gift to the show
- 1:26:03is, but just like every once in a while I couldn't because I
- 1:26:06could take screenshots on the screener, just for my own
- 1:26:09purposes. And I just like, kept screenshot
- 1:26:11in them because they all look so good.
- 1:26:12And I just went under, remember, Yeah, yeah, that's a great
- 1:26:16point. And like again, you know, even I
- 1:26:18was looking at one of the earlier shots, with the Great
- 1:26:22Hall, filled with all the glowing glow glow glow grapes.
- 1:26:26And it's like, we know from talking to these folks that they
- 1:26:31like, everything is practical. Everything that can be practical
- 1:26:33is practical. So, like, they really did
- 1:26:36probably like, put these lights all over the rock hanging from
- 1:26:39the ceiling and on every prop and every character or whatever,
- 1:26:42and like, it looks so good and they didn't have To do that.
- 1:26:45They could have done so much of it in camera or in the computer.
- 1:26:48And yeah, they made the decision to like make it look good.
- 1:26:54First and foremost we're grateful for that.
- 1:26:57Yeah, well and that was, and I think it was because of its
- 1:27:01Haunted Mansion had Joe stared right before, which has all
- 1:27:04digital backgrounds, you know, are almost all digital back.
- 1:27:08Sure. Right before the season came out
- 1:27:10for back to the Rock and I remember just worrying that like
- 1:27:13oh, that cool. That's what it's Gonna look like
- 1:27:15it's going to be digital Fraggle.
- 1:27:16Rock. Awesome cool.
- 1:27:19And then it wasn't it looks amazing.
- 1:27:21And I was so happy. Yeah.
- 1:27:24Yeah. Well, Bethany Anthony, thank you
- 1:27:26both so much for being here for this conversation.
