- 0:00Speaker 1: Obviously Texas, Texas A and M is going to headline
- 0:02Speaker 1: across the nation in collegiate sports as as well as
- 0:06Speaker 1: in the Greater Austin area and in the Brass Valley
- 0:09Speaker 1: in basketball. As we mentioned, Texas men are in action
- 0:14Speaker 1: on Friday night against Delaware State. That is an eight
- 0:16Speaker 1: o'clock tip all, by the way, because it's being done
- 0:19Speaker 1: at the SEC network plus. So that's an eight o'clock tip.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Do you have plenty of time to recover from trip
- 0:28Speaker 1: to fan overload and you know, eating all the turkey
- 0:32Speaker 1: and dressing and all that other coinsts.
- 0:34Speaker 2: You know, Craig. Hopefully Delaware State does not have any
- 0:37Speaker 2: travel issues. Like their football team in Hawaii, that was tough.
- 0:43Speaker 1: They did win last night over a team called Penn
- 0:46Speaker 1: State Wilkes Barry and beat them pretty handily. But anyway,
- 0:53Speaker 1: so they'll play Delaware State on Friday night and then
- 0:58Speaker 1: of course the Texas women as we speak are in
- 1:02Speaker 1: the air right now, flying the southwest Florida, flying down
- 1:06Speaker 1: to the Fort Myers area. They're going to play in
- 1:08Speaker 1: the Gulf Coast Showcase. That's a They play this in
- 1:11Speaker 1: an arena that seats about nine thousand, eight thousand.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Something like this.
- 1:15Speaker 1: It's not a bad building. It's kind of like the
- 1:16Speaker 1: AGB Center in Cedar Park's a little older, but it's
- 1:19Speaker 1: not a bad building and not a bad tournament field
- 1:22Speaker 1: as well. They have some good teams in there, including
- 1:26Speaker 1: a team that they could conceivably play in the championship,
- 1:29Speaker 1: an unbeaten West Virginia team and long wards. Head coach
- 1:33Speaker 1: Vic Schaefer was asked about how this trip to Florida
- 1:38Speaker 1: over the Thanksgiving we can break will help in terms
- 1:41Speaker 1: of connecting his team and continuing to work on that
- 1:44Speaker 1: all important bonding thing.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm excited about it. I think our kids are
- 1:49Speaker 3: excited about going on the road. But you know, the
- 1:53Speaker 3: gauntless fixing to start for us. We have three straight
- 1:58Speaker 3: you know, easy it could culminate with a you know,
- 2:05Speaker 3: on Sunday night, if we take care of business, could
- 2:08Speaker 3: have to play at top ten, top twelveteen in West Virginia.
- 2:13Speaker 2: But I mean, we got a lot of work to
- 2:14Speaker 2: do before we get to that point.
- 2:17Speaker 3: You come home late Sunday night, You leave on Wednesday
- 2:19Speaker 3: to go to US to South Bend to play Notre
- 2:22Speaker 3: Dame and on Thursday on National TV.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Come home late Thursday night and.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Leave again on Saturday to go on the road again,
- 2:36Speaker 3: and then we we've got another one on the road
- 2:39Speaker 3: after that and then a home game with South Dakota State,
- 2:42Speaker 3: who's top twenty five always in the NCAA tournament. Well, coach,
- 2:46Speaker 3: right before Christmas, so you know, the gauntlet's here for us,
- 2:52Speaker 3: and we've got to be ready to go. And I'm
- 2:56Speaker 3: excited to take this team on the road kind of
- 2:59Speaker 3: get away a little bit. And I loved our focus
- 3:02Speaker 3: at to Paul and so now we'll see what it's
- 3:05Speaker 3: going to be like in Fort Myers.
- 3:07Speaker 1: It's a little bit different there in Florida, as we mentioned,
- 3:09Speaker 1: with the three games down there, and it's going to
- 3:11Speaker 1: take a little longer. So this is something that comes
- 3:15Speaker 1: up every year when a team travels over a holiday,
- 3:21Speaker 1: a holiday, be it Thanksgiving, Christmas, there's always that h
- 3:25Speaker 1: word that comes into play, homesick, not being there with
- 3:28Speaker 1: your family for the holiday. And so how does he
- 3:32Speaker 1: as a head coach and his staff help the players
- 3:34Speaker 1: who might feel a little homesick, especially the younger ones
- 3:37Speaker 1: freshman or sophomores on Thanksgiving Day with the team in Florida.
- 3:43Speaker 1: And I know our friend Jeff Jones from kV You
- 3:46Speaker 1: also had a question in the mix here about this,
- 3:48Speaker 1: but here's Vick's thoughts on how he deals with the
- 3:50Speaker 1: team in countering that situation.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, we usually Thanksgiving is usually a tournament weekend,
- 4:00Speaker 3: so we're usually gone on Thanksgiving. I will say this,
- 4:04Speaker 3: I won't be gone next Thanksgiving, and y'all can figure
- 4:06Speaker 3: out why. But I'm we're gonna be at home next
- 4:11Speaker 3: next week, next year, I promise you.
- 4:14Speaker 2: But nonetheless, we are typically gone.
- 4:17Speaker 3: And you know, I'm a big traditional Thanksgiving day meal guy.
- 4:22Speaker 3: I like turkey and dressing. We don't have stuffing, we
- 4:26Speaker 3: have dressing. If I was at home, I'd be making
- 4:29Speaker 3: my mama's homemade dressing.
- 4:31Speaker 2: I've got her recipe and it is off the chart.
- 4:35Speaker 2: You know, I'm.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Always going to go over to the Bontain to my
- 4:40Speaker 3: guy Jimmy Wyckel's place there in La Grange and get
- 4:44Speaker 3: me some homemade pies, or I'm gonna go get them
- 4:46Speaker 3: up in Marble Falls at the cafe at.
- 4:48Speaker 2: The Blue Bonnet. I'm always gonna have some good desserts.
- 4:52Speaker 3: And so you know, we'll have a good traditional day
- 4:57Speaker 3: meal in Fort Myers and and uh, and then we
- 5:04Speaker 3: got to play Friday, Saturday, Sunday back to back to back.
- 5:06Speaker 3: We have to play every night at seven point thirty,
- 5:09Speaker 3: which is not my I've never had to do that, y'all.
- 5:13Speaker 2: I've never been in a tournament.
- 5:15Speaker 3: And I got stuck at the same time every day,
- 5:18Speaker 3: especially at late, you know, late at night, and so
- 5:23Speaker 3: that'll be a challenge for us to navigate a little bit,
- 5:25Speaker 3: but we'll get through it. But you know, our kids
- 5:31Speaker 3: are I think, excited about going and playing in a tournament.
- 5:35Speaker 3: And you know they made the comment yesterday, man, the
- 5:39Speaker 3: game against Charleton seems like a month ago. And uh
- 5:43Speaker 3: so they're ready to get you to play, and we're
- 5:45Speaker 3: fixing to play a bunch of them in a short
- 5:47Speaker 3: period of time. And just for quick clarification, you're going
- 5:51Speaker 3: to bring the pies with you to Florida or you
- 5:52Speaker 3: have here.
- 5:55Speaker 2: No, I probably won't be able to bring them with me,
- 5:58Speaker 2: but uh.
- 6:00Speaker 3: That's that's always It's always something I've always looked forward to.
- 6:04Speaker 2: My mother always made a great.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Thanksgiving meal, and you know, with with the turkey and
- 6:11Speaker 3: dress and the mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, corn,
- 6:15Speaker 3: homemade rolls, and then she always had some great pies,
- 6:18Speaker 3: and uh, we've just tried to carry on that tradition
- 6:21Speaker 3: in my family is as we can.
- 6:24Speaker 2: And when I've had the kids over on Thanksgiving, we
- 6:27Speaker 2: we have it as well. So but now I won't
- 6:31Speaker 2: be able to bring them with me.
- 6:32Speaker 3: It's a good idea, you know, let me put my
- 6:34Speaker 3: mind to that. It might be a good idea to
- 6:37Speaker 3: put them on a plane and take him with us.
- 6:39Speaker 1: So then that also asked the question of Vic Schaeffer
- 6:44Speaker 1: about this matchup with Texas A and M. The reporters
- 6:47Speaker 1: really wanted to talk to Vic about the end because remember,
- 6:50Speaker 1: Vick is seeing it from both sides, both the A
- 6:53Speaker 1: and M and Texas side. He was a longtime assistant there.
- 6:55Speaker 1: He went to school there obviously, so he was asked
- 6:59Speaker 1: about Texas A and M. And did he feel like
- 7:02Speaker 1: the Aggies had to bring it against Texas every single
- 7:05Speaker 1: time when he was coaching in Collin Station, And does
- 7:08Speaker 1: he feel the same way now with these roles somewhat reversed.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Well, you have to remember when we got there in three,
- 7:15Speaker 3: I mean, coach Conrad was coming off of the Final
- 7:19Speaker 3: four that they had destroyed us at Arkansas in the
- 7:25Speaker 3: second round the NCAA tournament the year before, I believe,
- 7:28Speaker 3: and and so the league was so good, you know,
- 7:35Speaker 3: there were several teams that were really good.
- 7:37Speaker 2: They were in the top ten.
- 7:38Speaker 3: But you know, we were just trying to keep our
- 7:42Speaker 3: head above water. They left us a nice little Division
- 7:45Speaker 3: three team, you know, over there to try to compete against,
- 7:50Speaker 3: you know, the Texas is of the world. And so
- 7:53Speaker 3: it was. It was a struggle. But we slowly but surely,
- 7:58Speaker 3: you know, built it.
- 8:00Speaker 2: And you know that.
- 8:04Speaker 3: As time as it happened, and I think coach retired
- 8:08Speaker 3: and then I think that the streak is either eleven
- 8:11Speaker 3: or thirteen straight. And again, we Coach and I understood
- 8:21Speaker 3: the importance of winning those games because when we got there,
- 8:27Speaker 3: we couldn't we couldn't beat Texas on a kid. We
- 8:30Speaker 3: couldn't beat Baylor on a kid. We couldn't beat Texas
- 8:33Speaker 3: Tech on a kid. So we were going to recruit
- 8:36Speaker 3: the state of Texas. We were going to get the
- 8:39Speaker 3: fourth best player. And you can't do it. You can't
- 8:43Speaker 3: catch anybody getting the fourth best player in the state
- 8:45Speaker 3: of Texas every year.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Does that make sense? And so we.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Knew, you know, we had to we had to hang
- 8:54Speaker 3: our hat on something, which was our defense, and slowly,
- 9:00Speaker 3: you know, just kind of creep around and try to
- 9:02Speaker 3: catch up, and then you get you know, you get
- 9:05Speaker 3: lucky on a kid or two, and next thing you know,
- 9:07Speaker 3: you you know, you're you're playing hard in your guarden.
- 9:11Speaker 2: And and so, uh.
- 9:14Speaker 3: We understood the importance of that game in the big
- 9:19Speaker 3: picture for us to try to survive and be a
- 9:24Speaker 3: factor in this you know, as a as a as
- 9:27Speaker 3: a basketball team in the state of Texas, because at
- 9:31Speaker 3: that point it was Texas, it was Texas Tech, and
- 9:34Speaker 3: really it was steven F.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Austin when coach was at steven F. Austin.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Those were the three schools that were committed to women's basketball.
- 9:42Speaker 3: Nobody else was committed. They had teams, but they weren't committed.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Texas and Texas Tech and Steven F. Austin were three
- 9:51Speaker 3: of the best teams in the country. But it was
- 9:54Speaker 3: because their administrations were committed, and part of that commitment
- 9:58Speaker 3: was having good coaches, and then those good coaches understood
- 10:02Speaker 3: the importance of recruiting. So yeah, it's it's something that
- 10:08Speaker 3: we certainly understood, respected and it's it's really what motivated
- 10:15Speaker 3: us day in and day out, And it's why they
- 10:18Speaker 3: hired us there because we were Texas guys and they
- 10:22Speaker 3: knew that that we had had success recruiting the state.
- 10:25Speaker 2: We had been a part of the state in coaching
- 10:28Speaker 2: for so many years.
- 10:29Speaker 3: And the bottom line is, y'all, there's if you're going
- 10:33Speaker 3: to function it at the University of Texas or an
- 10:37Speaker 3: A and M or anywhere else, if you can't recruit
- 10:40Speaker 3: this state, it's gonna be hard for you. Men, it is,
- 10:44Speaker 3: It's gonna be hard for you. So I think that's
- 10:47Speaker 3: what you see right now in football. Both those schools
- 10:50Speaker 3: are going head to head, you know, in recruiting a lot,
- 10:53Speaker 3: and you know, we're just we feel like at Texas
- 10:59Speaker 3: we ought to constantly being the running for the best
- 11:02Speaker 3: players in the state.
- 11:04Speaker 2: So we make it a priority.
- 11:06Speaker 1: So there's the thoughts of Vick Schaeffer. We'll be back
- 11:08Speaker 1: to wrap up today's show and the week going into
- 11:10Speaker 1: the holiday on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
