- 0:00Good morning y'all, it's friendly.
- 0:02Thanks so much for joining me on In the Stillness today.
- 0:06Happy Tuesday. Lately I have been so struck by
- 0:10how dense scripture really is. Like I have been sitting with
- 0:15just a few verses in First John and the Lord has been revealing
- 0:19so much, and so today we're just taking a few lines again, really
- 0:24letting them speak to us. I'm going to be reading from
- 0:27First John chapter 2, verses 18 through 20.
- 0:33Dear children, the end of this age is near.
- 0:37You have heard that the Antichrist is arising, and in
- 0:41fact, many enemies of Christ have already appeared.
- 0:45This is how we know that we are living in the closing hour of
- 0:49this age. For even though they were once a
- 0:52part of us, they withdrew from us because they were never truly
- 0:56of us. For if they had been of us, they
- 1:00would have remained with us. But by leaving, they made it
- 1:04obvious that they were not really of us.
- 1:07But the Holy One has anointed you, and you all know the truth.
- 1:13OK, I kept coming back to the phrase the end of this age, and
- 1:20in another translation it says the last hour.
- 1:24Because if I'm being honest, I used to hear things like that
- 1:28and kind of feel disconnected. People have been saying the end
- 1:33of the age for generations, the end times.
- 1:37And I would ask myself, how is it still the last hour?
- 1:42But what John is pointing to is the entire stretch of time
- 1:47between Jesus's first coming and his return.
- 1:50So from Pentecost on. So yes, it has been over 2000
- 1:55years, but spiritually speaking, we are in the final stretch of
- 2:00the story. And Scripture is also clear that
- 2:041000 years to us could be like a day to God.
- 2:08And the picture that the Lord gave me today was from running
- 2:12track actually. So I used to run the 800 meter.
- 2:16And let me just say that final lap is brutal.
- 2:21You are exhausted, Your legs feel like they're giving out and
- 2:25your breathing is heavy. Everything in you wants to slow
- 2:29down. But here's the thing about that
- 2:32last lap, you honestly don't feel how close you truly are in
- 2:38the moment. It still feels really long.
- 2:41It feels stretching. But then when you finish and you
- 2:44look back, it was so much shorter than it felt.
- 2:48It's like 2 minutes of your life.
- 2:50And I just kept thinking, what if we are closer than we
- 2:54realize? What if this really is the last
- 2:57lap and we're living like we have endless time because no one
- 3:03runs the final lap casually? If they truly understand what is
- 3:08at stake and what's ahead Spiritually, though, I think it
- 3:12can be easy to drift into apathy, into distraction, or
- 3:18just going through motions. And Scripture calls us higher.
- 3:23In First Corinthians 9 verse 24, Paul says to run in such a way
- 3:28as to get the prize. And then in Second Timothy 2, I
- 3:32was actually reading this last night, Paul is painting this
- 3:35picture that an athlete has to train with discipline to
- 3:40compete. A farmer who works hard before
- 3:44seeing the harvest. A soldier who stays focused and
- 3:48doesn't just get entangled in the distractions.
- 3:52See, The thing is, none of them drift into faithfulness.
- 3:57It's actually intentional, it's costly, it's daily, and that is
- 4:04the invite for us right now. This is not the time to be
- 4:08passive. It's a time to be alert, to be
- 4:12trained and to be rooted because y'all, the enemy, he loves to
- 4:19come in when you're tired or when you're in that last lap
- 4:23moment and everything in you wants to ease up.
- 4:27And Galatians 69 reminds us, do not grow weary in doing good
- 4:32because you will reap a harvest if you do not give up.
- 4:36So there has to be a determination not just in our
- 4:40minds but in our hearts that says I am not going to slow
- 4:43down. I'm not going back to apathy or
- 4:46laziness. I am not wasting this final
- 4:49stretch. We have to determine to fix our
- 4:52eyes on the finish line for the joy set before us, just like
- 4:56Jesus did, and to run. And then John brings in
- 5:01something that adds even more urgency.
- 5:05He talks about Antichrist, and not just one, but many people
- 5:10who oppose the truth. Sometimes it can be in obvious
- 5:14ways, but by softening it, compromising, or maybe making it
- 5:19seem like the truth is not that serious.
- 5:22But what's sobering is they were not strangers.
- 5:27The way that John writes this, we see they were once among the
- 5:31believers in the church, which means that being around truth is
- 5:36not the same as being anchored in it.
- 5:41So I think this leads us to a real heart check.
- 5:44Why do I follow Jesus? Why do you call yourself a
- 5:49Christian if you say you are? Is it authentic or is it just
- 5:54familiar? Is it just words?
- 5:58Because Colossians 3, verse 17 and verse 23, they remind us
- 6:03that everything we do is meant to be for the Lord.
- 6:08And this also presses into our relationships because if we're
- 6:13in the last slap, you need to ask yourself, who am I running
- 6:17with? Are they pushing me toward
- 6:20Jesus? Are they calling me higher?
- 6:22Are they helping me stay awake spiritually?
- 6:26Or are people around you? Are they pulling you toward
- 6:30comfort, distraction, maybe compromise?
- 6:35And yes, this is a touchy subject.
- 6:38Sometimes people leaving your life is painful, but viewing it
- 6:44from an outside lens and maybe looking more into God's
- 6:49perspective, it can also be protection because not everyone
- 6:53is going to support you going all in for Christ.
- 6:58And if someone isn't helping you stay devoted in your race, it's
- 7:02OK to acknowledge that and to entrust that to the Lord.
- 7:07So this is where staying in the Word consistently becomes so, so
- 7:13crucial. Because deception is not loud a
- 7:17lot of the times it's subtle. And if you're not grounded in
- 7:21the truth every day, it's going to be so much harder to
- 7:25recognize when something is off. But the Holy Spirit, he
- 7:31illuminates the word for us, bringing understanding,
- 7:36sharpening our discernment. He helps us to see clearly and
- 7:41the more reps that you get in Scripture, the more time you
- 7:45spend reading it, the more sensitive you're going to become
- 7:48to the truth and to anything or anyone that tries to distort it
- 7:53or change it. The Word of God does not just
- 7:58educate us more on the Lord and our mission.
- 8:03It doesn't just inform us. It's our protection because it's
- 8:08keeping us centered around Jesus and anchored in the truth so
- 8:13that you're not easily swayed when you're tired or discouraged
- 8:17or even vulnerable. Not only that, but we have a
- 8:21responsibility with the Word because we are called to pass it
- 8:25on, to speak the truth, to share what God is revealing to you in
- 8:31order that you may help others, especially those who may be
- 8:35newer in their faith or feeling weak so that they're not swept
- 8:39away by deception. When you don't know truth, you
- 8:44are far more vulnerable to believing a lie.
- 8:48So this isn't just for us to stay rooted, it's also about
- 8:53helping others stay rooted as well.
- 8:57I just want to leave y'all with this as I've been sitting with
- 8:59it. If this really is the last hour,
- 9:05if this really is the final stretch, the last lap, how are
- 9:10you running? Are you awake?
- 9:14Are you being intentional with the time that you have?
- 9:17Are you training your life around knowing Christ and making
- 9:22him known? Or have you gotten comfortable
- 9:25in a race that actually requires your everything, your all out
- 9:31effort? So here's a few reflection
- 9:35questions for you. Have I been running hard after
- 9:39Christ or coasting spiritually? Am I consistently rooted in
- 9:46God's Word or am I relying on surface level truth?
- 9:52And who around me today might need encouragement or truth so
- 9:56that they don't grow weak or deceived?
- 10:00Let's go ahead and pray. Dear Jesus, thank you for your
- 10:06word and the way that it grounds us.
- 10:10I pray that you would just wake us up in any places that we have
- 10:16grown apathetic, lazy, distracted.
- 10:21I pray that you would give us discipline to stay rooted in
- 10:25Scripture, to be sensitive to your Spirit so that we can
- 10:29discern what is true. May we dwell on what is true and
- 10:34noble, right and pure, excellent and praiseworthy, lovely and
- 10:40admirable. I pray that you would strengthen
- 10:43us to keep running even when we feel tired.
- 10:47Give us perseverance. Help us not to lose sight of
- 10:51what is really at stake and why we are here.
- 10:55God, I ask for a greater boldness, a deeper compassion to
- 11:01want to share truth with others. Would you use us to build up
- 11:05your people and to help them stay anchored in you too?
- 11:10We fix our eyes on you today, Jesus, and we love you so much.
- 11:15And your name, Amen. OK guys, well that's today's
- 11:20episode. Happy Tuesday.
- 11:22Hope you all have a wonderful rest of your day and I will see
- 11:25y'all on the next pod.
