- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. We are back at the kitchen counter again. Lucas: Last time we talked about roasting and boiling. Now we need to prepare the ingredients first. Luna: Oh right. You cannot just throw whole vegetables into the pot. Lucas: Exactly. We need to cut them. There are two main ways to do this in Malay. Luna: I am ready to learn. What is the first word? Lucas: The first word is potong. It means to chop or to cut. Luna: Potong. Okay. Let me try that. Lucas: Potong. Luna: Potong. Lucas: Good. That was clear. Now let us make it a full phrase. Luna: Okay. What is a common thing you chop? Lucas: Vegetables. So we say potong sayur. Luna: Potong sayur. To chop vegetables. Lucas: Yes. Potong sayur. Say it slowly. Luna: Potong sayur. Lucas: Perfect. Now imagine you are holding a knife. You are chopping. Luna: I am chopping. Potong sayur. Lucas: Let us add a subject. Who is chopping? Luna: Me? Saya potong sayur. Lucas: Yes. Saya potong sayur. I chop vegetables. Luna: Saya potong sayur. Lucas: Great. Now let us look at the second word. It is hiris. Luna: Hiris. Does it mean something different from potong? Lucas: Yes. Potong is a general chop. Hiris is a thin slice. Luna: Oh, like slicing bread or slicing ginger thinly? Lucas: Exactly. Slicing. Hiris. Let us try it. Luna: Hiris. Lucas: Hiris. Good. Now a common instruction you might hear in a kitchen. Luna: What is the phrase? Lucas: Hiris halus. It means slice thinly. Luna: Hiris halus. Slice thinly. Lucas: Yes. Hiris halus. Repeat it with me. Luna: Hiris halus. Lucas: Hiris halus. Very good. Luna: Hiris halus. Lucas: Now let us put these together in a real scene. Luna: Okay. I am making dinner tonight. Lucas: You have an onion. What do you say? Luna: I say... Saya sedang potong bawang. Lucas: Yes. Saya sedang potong bawang. I am currently chopping onions. Luna: Saya sedang potong bawang. Lucas: That sounds very natural. Now your friend tells you to be careful. Luna: Are you going to tell me to slice thinly? Lucas: He says, Jangan hiris jari. Do not slice your finger. Luna: Oh no. Jangan hiris jari. That is scary. Lucas: It is a warning. Jangan hiris jari. Listen to it. Luna: Jangan hiris jari. Lucas: Jangan hiris jari. You got it.
