- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Sarah Strickland. A thirty year old man has been
- 0:03Speaker 1: arrested and will be charged with deliberately setting fires at
- 0:07Speaker 1: two radio and communications towers in the capital City. RNC
- 0:12Speaker 1: has responded to six suspicious fires at tower sites across
- 0:16Speaker 1: the metro region since the weekend, with the most recent
- 0:19Speaker 1: blaze breaking out Tuesday in Pippy Park. The suspect, who
- 0:23Speaker 1: is now facing two counts of arson and two counts
- 0:26Speaker 1: of mischief causing property damage, is in custody for court
- 0:29Speaker 1: appearance today. RNC says the investigation into the remaining four
- 0:34Speaker 1: fires is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Two young people are in hospital with life altering injuries
- 0:43Speaker 1: following an ATV collision in Labrador. The incident happened around
- 0:47Speaker 1: the supper hour Monday as an off duty RCMP officer
- 0:51Speaker 1: responded to the accident, which happened on Western Brook Road
- 0:54Speaker 1: and Lance Claire. Police say injuries are believed to be
- 0:58Speaker 1: life altering. The passenger of the second ATV, an adult,
- 1:02Speaker 1: was not injured. Police say all occupants were wearing helmets
- 1:06Speaker 1: at the time and that charges are possible. Premiers from
- 1:11Speaker 1: across the country took to the podium calling for increased
- 1:14Speaker 1: federal funding, with Premier Tony Wakem saying the need in
- 1:17Speaker 1: Newfoundland and Labrador is great. Officials have been in PI
- 1:22Speaker 1: in meetings over the past two days and are to
- 1:24Speaker 1: sit down with Prime Minister Mark Karney today where increasing
- 1:28Speaker 1: the Canadian Health Transfer from Ottawa is expected to be
- 1:31Speaker 1: on the agenda. Wakem says part of the discussion in
- 1:34Speaker 1: PI is looking at the way healthcare is delivered.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Eighty percent of the cost of our healthcare system is
- 1:43Speaker 2: usually around people, between salaries and benefits. And when you
- 1:47Speaker 2: think about healthcare and you break it down and break
- 1:50Speaker 2: it down from the equipment to the buildings, it's really
- 1:53Speaker 2: about people helping people and that's exactly what Canada has
- 1:57Speaker 2: been unbound. That's what we're about, trying to make it
- 1:59Speaker 2: easier for the people of Canada access healthcare. But in
- 2:03Speaker 2: order for that to happen, we have to make sure
- 2:05Speaker 2: we support our healthcare workers.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Wakem says the federal government needs to provide more supports
- 2:11Speaker 1: to provinces for health care delivery. Canada's generic prescription drug
- 2:16Speaker 1: industry is the latest target of US President Donald Trump's tariffs.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Trump says generic drugs imported into the US will be
- 2:24Speaker 1: tariffed at one hundred percent beginning in two years. That
- 2:29Speaker 1: tariff will rise to two hundred percent one year later.
- 2:32Speaker 1: The generic drug industry and its investors hope the two
- 2:35Speaker 1: year grace period will provide an opportunity to negotiate individual
- 2:40Speaker 1: deals with the Trump administration. A thirty year old Saint
- 2:44Speaker 1: John's Man has been ticketed by the RCMP for not
- 2:47Speaker 1: only speeding down the highway, but for having headphones on
- 2:51Speaker 1: and not being able to hear the police sirens behind him.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Just after three o'clock on July eleventh, officers clocked a
- 2:58Speaker 1: vehicle going one hundred twenty d eight kilometers an hour
- 3:01Speaker 1: in a sixty zone on the TCH near Gander. Initial
- 3:04Speaker 1: attempts to pull the vehicle over were unsuccessful. Eventually, the
- 3:09Speaker 1: vehicle did stop, and police say the driver told them
- 3:11Speaker 1: that he was wearing earbuds and could not hear the sirens.
- 3:15Speaker 1: The music lover was ticketed for speeding and driving without
- 3:19Speaker 1: due care and attention. Canadians have claimed more than one
- 3:23Speaker 1: hundred and ninety million dollars in federal subsidies this year
- 3:26Speaker 1: for new electric vehicles. The new data from Transport Canada
- 3:31Speaker 1: shows more than forty four thousand claims were recorded through June,
- 3:34Speaker 1: with half coming from Quebec. Ottawa relaunched the ev rebate
- 3:39Speaker 1: program early this year and allocated nearly two point three
- 3:42Speaker 1: billion dollars to it over five years. The rebates apply
- 3:46Speaker 1: only to vehicles costing less than fifty thousand dollars, but
- 3:50Speaker 1: Canadian made avs are exempt from that cap. One hundred
- 3:55Speaker 1: years of history and service were honored on the grounds
- 3:58Speaker 1: of Government House yesterday as the Royal Canadian Legion celebrates
- 4:02Speaker 1: its centennial. Richard Duggan reports.
- 4:05Speaker 3: The Lieutenant Governor's annual garden party always draws a crowd,
- 4:08Speaker 3: but this year's event carried a lot more significance. The
- 4:12Speaker 3: Legion was first incorporated on July seventeenth, nineteen twenty six,
- 4:15Speaker 3: and during the event that history was highlighted with the
- 4:18Speaker 3: ceremony to kick things off and other displays around the area.
- 4:22Speaker 3: National Legion President Berkeley Lawrence highlights the relationship between that
- 4:26Speaker 3: organization and Government House.
- 4:27Speaker 4: Being the King's representative across the country, the Lieutenant Governors
- 4:31Speaker 4: and the Governor General have a very unique responsibility to
- 4:34Speaker 4: their Royal Canadian Legion. The Governor General is an Honorary
- 4:37Speaker 4: President of the Royal Canadian Legion and every year the
- 4:39Speaker 4: Lieutenant governors across the country start our poppy campaign in
- 4:42Speaker 4: every province.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Lawrence got involved with the Legion in two thousand and
- 4:45Speaker 3: four after he retired from a thirty three year career
- 4:48Speaker 3: in the military. He says the organization has opened a
- 4:51Speaker 3: lot of doors for him.
- 4:52Speaker 4: Took on senior leadership role, so I'm very very proud
- 4:55Speaker 4: of that, and I get to send the message. I
- 4:56Speaker 4: get to deliver the message of the Royal Canadian Legion,
- 4:59Speaker 4: something I always believed in. So it's great for me
- 5:02Speaker 4: to be a member of the Allegiant.
- 5:03Speaker 1: And that's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
