Latest / AWAKEN with Dylan Ayaloo: Inner Work, Healing, Yoga & Meditation / [EP17] Do "quick fixes" work?
Transcript
- 0:00Can you talk about the quick fix and quick hack culture? Lots on social media, but it only occurred to me when I was reading an email about yet another quick fix regarding stress-related symptoms, how annoying they become, and I'm wondering, do they actually support us? Is this serving people generally, or have we become confused, obsessed socially with fixing problems in the short term so we can stay busy and overcommitted? What's your point of view of experience?
- 0:22The whole kind of like quick fix thing that we see on the internet, I think so much of it is marketing.
- 0:32So because we are, one feeds the other and we've spoiled ourselves to want everything in like quick fixes.
- 0:40Everything has to be like, give me the short version.
- 0:42Give me the summarized version.
- 0:43Give me the five minute version rather than the five week version where I actually have to go and do the work.
- 0:48So therefore, we find ourselves for all the many different reasons that I won't go into right now.
- 0:56One has built into the other.
- 0:58And now in this point in time in humanity, we find ourselves in a space where everything is expected to be expressed and given to us very quickly.
- 1:10the short answer to in my opinion i don't know about the ultimate truth of the universe but in
- 1:15my opinion from my experience having done this work and having worked having had the privilege
- 1:19of working with lots of people over time does it work the short answer is no in my opinion
- 1:27and if anything if it does look like it works it's like a quick fix so therefore you have a
- 1:33quick relief and might take the edge off, so to speak.
- 1:37Right.
- 1:38But this is why I don't focus on quick fixes.
- 1:42I think the quick fix, the only maybe quick fix I've ever taught, I teach it in
- 1:47Awaken and I put it on social media as well.
- 1:49It's the breath, right?
- 1:50Take your hands, put it in your ribs.
- 1:51Now bring your breath down to the bottom of your lungs.
- 1:54Just add one thing, which is a quick thing to do and 10 deep breaths, like
- 1:57inhale, exhale is one breath.
- 1:59So you do 10 of those will shift your emotion.
- 2:03I've taught that many times. People have probably seen it. You guys have probably seen it.
- 2:06That's probably about the quick fix, as far as the quick fix goes. Everything else that I teach
- 2:13is probably annoying to everyone. And I don't care if it's annoying. I care about what works.
- 2:22So from my experience of working with people, the quick fixes don't work. The quick fixes,
- 2:28as you say, keep us distracted and then we crash and burn soon after.
- 2:34So that's why I focus on more long-term.
- 2:37It's like investing, right?
- 2:40Some of you here are investors.
- 2:42You can go and look for the thing to make the quick buck, right?
- 2:45So that people will promise you things to make, right?
- 2:48Like, yeah, I'm going to give you like quick and big returns really quickly.
- 2:52And normally the seasoned investors would run away from that
- 2:56because they would always go for the long term, the long game.
- 3:02You want to be in it for the long game.
- 3:06The boring, slow, long way should be the most exciting thing.
- 3:12Whether it's in investing or you're investing in yourself energetically,
- 3:18nourishing your body, your mind, your emotions, your internal environment.
- 3:23from my experience maybe limited to the last well two decades of me working with people
- 3:29almost two decades in my limited experience this is what i found the slow way is the fast way
- 3:38whether it's business whether it's investment whether it's with money whether it's in relationships
- 3:45whether it's in our health it's our relationship to our body or our emotions
- 3:51the long game play the long game rather than go to the gym today and snap something
- 3:59right why not work out for the rest of your life so that you can be healthy and strong and fit
- 4:08or like why not practice in such a way that you can have the yoga practice support you for the
- 4:15rest of your life. Same with the meditation. So my take on it is, what's the rush?
- 4:23Let's stop rushing. Take that urgency away and do things in the slow, long,
- 4:31boring way. Now if you're done with your 20s, which some of us here are, how many
- 4:41of you who are done with your 20s, if you had a second chance, you would go back to
- 4:46your 20s and do it the slow way.
- 4:48Right?
- 4:49So by the time you get to the age that you're in right now, the compounding effect, right?
- 4:56As many clever people have said, including Einstein, I said, you know, compounding effect
- 5:01is one of our, what do you call it, miracles, right?
- 5:05Of our time, I think, of the human life.
- 5:08things compound over time.
- 5:11So when you put in the work internally
- 5:15and also on the level of the body, of our mind, of our emotions,
- 5:19in our inner work,
- 5:21the slow, long gain
- 5:25guarantees you win.
- 5:27Whatever winning is.
- 5:29Whatever, however you define success to be.
- 5:33So if it's your physical health,
- 5:35which maybe is a bit more tangible,
- 5:38it a bit more. If you were to do a five minute meditation every day or almost every day for
- 5:46a year, you know that year is going to be not slightly different, significantly different
- 5:54to any other year in your life if you've never meditated before. That's just five minutes.
- 6:00Now if you did five minutes the moment you woke up and the five minutes just before you
- 6:04go to sleep every day, let's say, or almost every day, that year is going to be even more
- 6:12significantly different, not slightly.
- 6:16Right?
- 6:17We all know this stuff, but we don't want to do the slow, boring, consistent thing.
- 6:26The key to success really in any area, and I'm generalizing, but I think it works in
- 6:34The word is consistency.
- 6:37Consistency.
- 6:40Olympic athletes don't just train one day or the day before their match or their game or their sport.
- 6:49They don't get to the Olympic arena, never train in their life, train day before the thing and then go in and smash it.
- 6:56They train their whole life.
- 6:59So many of them are selected as children.
- 7:01I was selected at the age of 12 or 13 international, and then I was trained.
- 7:07Whether it's like athletes, whether it's in business, whether it's in investing,
- 7:12whether it's in our health or someone who has an amazing relationship,
- 7:17I would say play the long, slow game.
- 7:22The key to success in any area is consistency.
- 7:28In other words, discipline.
- 7:33The sexy word, right?
- 7:34We hate that word.
- 7:36Ugh, discipline.
- 7:37But that is the key.
- 7:40A quick fix does not work.
- 7:43We are trapped in this kind of culture of entitlement and instant, like, quick fixes,
- 7:52instant gratification and marketers know that and a lot of what we see on social media
- 7:59is marketing right like they put out things that will make you capture your attention within the
- 8:06first three seconds and you have to because if on the other side of it right let's say you want to
- 8:12build a business and you've got an amazing message to put out there you have to play that game too
- 8:17Within the first seconds, you need to hook people's attention.
- 8:20The next few seconds, you need to give them some value.
- 8:22And then following few seconds, you need to tell them to do something.
- 8:25It's like the rough formulas of that.
- 8:28And you'll find that right across the internet.
- 8:31So most of what we are consuming is marketing material.
- 8:36And marketers, the good marketers, have had to learn how to market.
- 8:41Otherwise, the marketing doesn't work.
- 8:44And because we want quick fixes, they give us quick fixes.
- 8:51To break the cycle, quick fixes, in my opinion, don't work.
