- 0:18Hello, and welcome to Gatesleepers, the pop culture game show that shines a
- 0:22spotlight onto everyone's favorite fandoms. I'm your games master and owner of the chaos
- 0:28theater that is this podcast, Matt Watson. But a games master needs games,
- 0:33and games need players, and we have a fantastic cast member lineup for
- 0:37you this time. So please welcome first to my physical right. They are
- 0:41here to make you think about fandoms and get happy and stuff. It's OG
- 0:45team captains Audre Stephenson Hello, and Jason Lewen Hello, Welcome, Odra,
- 0:50Welcome, Jason. How are you both? I'm feeling solid. That is
- 0:55the last line of my passing knowledge. Oh yeah, Gatekeepers, this is
- 1:00what we get for, not like checking each other script. So stay tuned
- 1:03for me to shout that great minds. Yes I'm excited. Heck yeah yeah.
- 1:10So my big fan uh love love a thing that will make geeky culture
- 1:19popular, you know what I mean. You know when when they're like,
- 1:22oh, look at nerds, look at nerds being nerd. You know,
- 1:25look at them going yes, it's you know, seminal movie pixels, These
- 1:33gross nerds, those nerds fly. It's a lot of projection happening right now,
- 1:38I feel so, I mean, we should address kind of the elephant
- 1:42in the room here, right, Jason, you're on the same team for
- 1:47the first time. How does it feel revolutionary? Yeah, to not be
- 1:52pitted against each other feels great. That being said, it will either both
- 1:57greatly or poorly. Yes, for us both. There is either anything could
- 2:04happen, is what you're saying. Yeah, stay tuned, excitement fantastic And
- 2:10yeah, Jason, you said you're a You're a fan of Scott Pilgrim.
- 2:13You love this kind of thing. Audre, you also a fan of Scott
- 2:15Pilgrim. Yeah, I have only read I think the first two comics.
- 2:20Ooh, but the movie I've seen a ton nice just finished the Netflix show,
- 2:29so we'll see. Oh how much I remember? Honestly, your knowledge
- 2:34is like on par of me. Just replace those two books with like,
- 2:37I've read them in high school and then I played some of the video game.
- 2:43But basically we're on the same level. Incorre, Okay, Yeah,
- 2:46well matched, It sounds like you're ready. Uh, welcome, Audra,
- 2:49Welcome, Jason, thank you for being here. But you'll need some opponents.
- 2:53This is a battle of the bands, after all. So to my
- 2:55metaphysical left, he is a voice actor, a podcast and crucially a Canadian.
- 3:00It's Drew Shulman. I realized as we're doing this, I'm like,
- 3:05I'm the only Canadian this remark. And he is a comic book artist,
- 3:10a podcaster and not Canadian. It's John Williams. It's true, I'm not.
- 3:16I'm an asshole California opposite. Have you been to Canada before? I
- 3:23have not. I grew up with it with with a lot of nice people
- 3:29though, so it's it's like being around around a bunch of Canadians right here
- 3:34you go, politeness of aple syrup. I know the next people with it
- 3:38you're referring to. No, Yeah, it's like that sounds it up pretty
- 3:40well. Nice and maple syrup. Yeah, i'd Scott Pilgrim of course yourself,
- 3:46So Drue, I don't want to stereotype you, but are you a
- 3:49big Scott Pilgrim fan? Yeah? I remember seeing the comic book whenever I
- 3:53went to comic book shops and having this weird like, oh, it's like
- 3:57it's trying to be an anime but like americanized art, and I was like
- 4:00really thrown off by it. Then the trailer for the movie came out,
- 4:02I was like, Oh, that's what it's about, by every issue and
- 4:06make my entire life's image fantastic. And John, how about yourself? Are
- 4:14you familiar with Scott Pilgrim? Oh? Boy, like, I know all
- 4:16about Scott Pilgrim, having been around in comic shops for my entire life.
- 4:20But no, I'm I'm just familiar with the movie. I'm coming in here
- 4:26as the as the layman. Lovely, lovely stuff. We love that.
- 4:29I mean, for so long, Jason has been the one in that role
- 4:32for so many times. It's nice to finally pass off the Dunce's hat.
- 4:38I just feel like there's be more episodes. I wouldn't defend my teammate.
- 4:42He is a pro wrestling expert experts. Okay, okay, I don't like
- 4:46that. You're on the same side is reading this? No, jud you'll
- 4:55you will do excellent. As always, the games can be played by anyone,
- 5:00but it really helps to have a Scott Pilgrim fan right by your side.
- 5:03Yeah, yeah, that is that is very, very comfortingly glad I
- 5:08can be comforting another Canadian staored hope, there we go. That's so comforting,
- 5:14so everyone says about that back get fucked. Yeah, okay, team
- 5:18Simmo down, Simmo down. You've arrived at band practice, but you haven't
- 5:23even come up with a name as good as sex bo bomb yet. So
- 5:27I'd like each pat to come up with a Scott Pilgrim themed team name.
- 5:30Please. Let's begin with these two trouble makers in the room, Molder and
- 5:32Jason. So we don't have names that are good as sex babomb okay,
- 5:38but we're pretty dang close. Adra. Yeah. Because band names are a
- 5:43great starting point, we were like, let's do band names, but we're
- 5:46gonna swap out one word. So I think the some of the ones that
- 5:50made the cut we both work out. So flex ba bombs flex b Yeah.
- 5:58We play role playing games, so x ba bombs. I see a
- 6:01pattern. We also had on the list Trash at Demonhead, Yeah, Garbage
- 6:08and sink Yes. Yeah. We also tried to do a thing of like
- 6:14switching out demon in Clash at Demonhead. But all we could come up with
- 6:16this Seamen heads off. That's off the table. That's off the table.
- 6:23No, No, sounds like a front runner to me. I feel like,
- 6:30yeah, which which would you like to go with? There? Was
- 6:33one I thought of before, and I wanted to surprise you with this one.
- 6:38There's the subspace highways that Ramona travels, and I thought of sub space
- 6:43whale highways, just as because you like space, I love space whales.
- 6:46Yeah, yeah, so the sub subspace whale highway. I'm down with that.
- 6:53Oh oh, subspace whale highway. I'm sorry we workshopped all that.
- 7:00It was a great bit. Yeah, sub space whale Highway. I just
- 7:08want to ask, what is your favorite space whale? I feel like it's
- 7:11a weird, like there's so many in sci fi fandoms. Do you have
- 7:15a particular favorite? Probably Hitchhiker's Guide is probably my face. I've been debating
- 7:20that tattoo for years. That whale is my favorite. That'd be so good.
- 7:25We also recently watched Fantasia two thousand, also has space whales. I
- 7:29hadn't I hadn't realized that it's one of the opening numbers. There's whales and
- 7:32they're in the ocean and then they are in space. Almost is enough space
- 7:36whales to make a quick fire around out of. Actually, how do you
- 7:45feel about space nar walls. I'm pretty intersectional as far as my whale based
- 7:56feminism. Yeah, it's a feminism I would have in the other roots.
- 8:00I know she can hear me say this, but there was a point in
- 8:01her life where and like this is recently, like while we were together,
- 8:05that she figured out that nar walls are real animal she thought. My heart
- 8:11flutters when I think about that time. It was probably too late in life
- 8:16for me as well, because they seem insane. I also found it only
- 8:22the males have the horn too. Thing makes sense nature sex, say,
- 8:26question mark. Probably. And now we're back at the whale based feminism again.
- 8:31Okay, well we have subspace whale Highway. But let's find out who
- 8:35they'll be facing, Drew John. I had a few ideas, but John,
- 8:41I'm curious if anything comes to mind for you before I ran off mine.
- 8:43I mean, I've got a few ideas too, but I feel like
- 8:46stealing splash its seaman head. But maybe not. Oh that's so it's pre
- 8:54damn good. I'll give you that one. But let's see, I've got
- 8:58let's see. You want to take turns? Yeah, I want to go
- 9:01one for one. You want to start us off? I'm curious what will
- 9:05angry with? Sure, I've got four play bombs very similar route because I
- 9:11also wanted to go verb verb for doing it. Uh and Mario Villains.
- 9:18I was like, fucking barana plants. That's good keeping up the trend of
- 9:24the dropping the F bomb in my titles. My team names have here,
- 9:30I have a brand I have to keep how I decided I dig it.
- 9:35Let's see, I got a cool gay roommates. Yes, I really love
- 9:43that one. I was also trying to find a clash on the boys ones
- 9:48with just two of us, I was like John and the Canadian. The
- 9:52last one I got was just the World. That's good. My last one,
- 10:03too, was also based off a title which was Scott Pilgrim Sad Little
- 10:07Life or Precious Little Life. That was a new Precious Little Team or Sad
- 10:09Little Team. Yeah, oh hey, you're you're the You're the expert.
- 10:16So I'll leave it in Uh, I'll leave it in your hand. I
- 10:18think because it's funny, but also because I think the title of the episode
- 10:22being versus the World might be one of the best things we could do for
- 10:26this podcast. I want to take that one. Yeah, it's clever,
- 10:31it's witty. If I give out bonus points for the team name that'd be
- 10:35some of some of that happening. I want you to title it Hell World,
- 10:39the First Ruined whatever, our team, you forgot your team whatever,
- 10:46whatever. I said it. Honestly, it's tempting to switch our name to
- 10:50Scott Pilgrim. Scott Pilgrim, Scott Pilgrim versus the World would be but no,
- 11:01we've got Subspace Whale Highway. It kind of makes the title a bit
- 11:05more unique. Yes, don't know what, oh that's good for, but
- 11:07you know it's that I'm picturing a whale meeting the Earth and sad. Yeah,
- 11:13yes, yes, oh, well, there's some great team names.
- 11:16We've got Subspace Whale Highway versus the Worst. It worked that time, if
- 11:22it doesn't work again, all right. And if you're listening to this and
- 11:26thinking, well, I'm along for the ride, but I don't know who
- 11:28this Scott Pilgrim guy is. Is he a person from the Highlands who goes
- 11:33on a religious journey? Yeah, like Scott Scott. Yeah, yes,
- 11:39yeah, all right, here's oudre with a little segment we like to call
- 11:43passing Knowledge. Scott Pilgrim is a series of graphic novels by Canadian author and
- 11:50comic book artist Brian Lee O'Malley. The original edition of the series consists of
- 11:56six digest sized black and white volumes, released between two thousand and twenty ten
- 12:01by Ony Press. It was later republished from twenty twelve to twenty fifteen by
- 12:05Fourth Estate, an imprint of HarperCollins, followed by a film, Scott Pilgrim
- 12:11Versus the World, directed by Edgar Wright, and a video game also released
- 12:13in twenty ten. An animated series adaptation titled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off released on
- 12:20Netflix in November twenty twenty three, all of it culminating to the final boss
- 12:24a gate Leapers episode in twenty twenty four see Not Such a Bad Guy after
- 12:31All. The series revolves around the titular Scott Pilgrim, a slacker, part
- 12:35time bass player who's dating a high school student. While recovering from a traumatic
- 12:39breakup. He starts a tentative romance with Ramona Flowers, soon discovering that Ramona
- 12:46possesses superpowers. Not only that, but to date her, he needs to
- 12:50defeat her seven evil supervillain exes, who all have similar abilities. The story
- 12:56forces both Scott and Ramona to come to terms with their respective pasth relationships,
- 13:01behaviors, and the fact that bred apparently makes you fat. I don't get
- 13:05fat. No, why would I get fat? Bread makes you fat?
- 13:09Bread maker fat. The Scott Pilgrim series received widespread acclaim and garnered a cult
- 13:15following, with audiences loving the humor and stylistic elements taken from music and video
- 13:20games, and especially how it spoke to the apathy felt by many in the
- 13:24millennial generation. Now, if you'll excuse me, we are gate Leapers,
- 13:28and we're here to make you think about fandom, said, feel blad and
- 13:30stuff one, two or three fart Yeah, better than mine? Nice,
- 13:35beautifully well done. I love it. That was it fun researching Scott Pilgrim.
- 13:43That was so much fun. I tried to get something in about the
- 13:46cast of the twenty ten film because I think financially, I don't know if
- 13:50that one it didn't do well, be real, it didn't do great,
- 13:56but the cast and was incredible. We have Bree Larson in one of her
- 14:01first big things. We got one of the Chris is one of the superhero
- 14:05Chris is Whitch Chris. He's in it. We've got Anna Kendrick, she
- 14:11was a before that. She was in Twilight, but even people who've seen
- 14:16Twilight will be like, oh, ship, she was in Twilight, so
- 14:18it's her Aubrey Plaza. Only one season of Parks and rec had aired,
- 14:24and so it wasn't a thing yet. This the cast was incredibleig millennial cast,
- 14:31and it may come up in a game again we make it a chance
- 14:35visit. Not only not only did you have Captain America, you had a
- 14:39superman in their team, Yeah, Brandon Ralph. Yeah. So it's incredible.
- 14:46There's someone in this cast for everyone in the fact that they all like
- 14:50stayed friends afterwards and went on to fully reprise their roles in the animated series
- 14:54like the same cast no one was cast. Yeah about that is amazing to
- 15:05think he's the famous one now. I don't know what you're laughing about.
- 15:11That's correct, he's the most It's like the old sin Sisters. We all
- 15:18grew up doing two of them. Where are they now? Not Wanda,
- 15:22that's where swimming in their billions like Scrooge mccag valid point. Yeah, just
- 15:31before we get to today's games, I've asked each player to bring in a
- 15:35muse, something that inspires them or something they love from this particular fandom.
- 15:39Scott Pilgrim is inspiring to me because thanks to Michael Sarah, people wanted to
- 15:43start kissing pasty white boys around the time, around the time that I wanted
- 15:48to start kissing. Thank you, Michael. Nice Jason, we'll start with
- 15:54you. What's inspiring you from the world of Scotty Doesn't Know? Oh man,
- 15:58I I love this guy. I love him so much. You know
- 16:02who I'm gonna say. But I particularly like his role in this movie.
- 16:06I think Lucas Lee. Lucas Lee. Yes, it's just it's just something
- 16:11so fun. It makes me really appreciate Chris Evans as an actor because there's
- 16:15this He's not the best actor in the world, let's be honest, but
- 16:18in the roles, in certain roles that he does play, he knows how
- 16:22to exemplify that aspect of what he's supposed to be. So like in Knives
- 16:26Out, he perfectly plays like a rich asshole. In the Fantastic Four movies,
- 16:32even like he's a perfect Johnny Storm, just the most arrogant, you
- 16:34know, naive young guy. And the funny thing about Lucas Lee is Lucas
- 16:41Lee is probably the most Chris Evans guy ever. You know it's so funny,
- 16:45and I just hey, there bro tout. I love I just love
- 16:51a good characters. Lucaslee just I can't stop doing the voice. So don't
- 17:00play my ego because I will say it throughout the look. As long as
- 17:06it's a choice, opportun opportune moments, at key moments, you can you
- 17:10can bring out the voice. It's fine. So only a matter of time
- 17:12before this. You want to say it, I want to say it.
- 17:17Don't tempt me. Okay, Well that's fantastic. Muse always love a character,
- 17:22and he is a fantastic character. Yeah, moving on over to your
- 17:26teammate in Subspace, Whale Highway or dra what's inspiring you from Scott Pilgrim,
- 17:32I am inspired by the Clash at demon Head and the music in the movie,
- 17:37specifically one I love Bree Larson. Now after that I was like,
- 17:41hell yeah, Bree Larsen also got me into the band Metric, which did
- 17:47the music. Yes, that was performed as Clash at demon Head. That
- 17:52was done by a band called Metric, So widened my music knowledge, got
- 17:56me into Bree Larsen made me feel a little like cooler and more villainous in
- 18:00an era when I needed to be to get through I needed that to get
- 18:06through college, and I even tried. We had like events at school where
- 18:11it was like you would perform like talent showcase things, but there was decorations
- 18:17and people would come in costumes and whatever. One of the themes was games
- 18:22and me and a band would always do a song every year, and I
- 18:26wanted to get them to do Black Sheep so bad. But one they're like,
- 18:30oh, you have to have known that movie and know what it's about
- 18:33and know the things. And also it was a Christian university and there there's
- 18:37a part about you take a ride from anyone, so it was not the
- 18:41greatest choice. Well, look, this isn't a Christian university. Do you
- 18:45want to have a song? Hello Voices? I was just gonna say,
- 18:52I knew you, and so it's a good song. It is. It's
- 19:00so fun. Oh yeah, so that's my inspiration. Hell yeah, I'm
- 19:03gonna take that as Metrica shout out to a really good band, Yeah,
- 19:07Metric and a great metrim in system. I couldn't agree more. Drew all
- 19:15right, and moving moving on over to the world, and we will begin
- 19:19with my fellow user of the Metric system drew what is inspiring you? I
- 19:25had him over like sitting in my office doing the little spin and seeing I
- 19:27have so much dam merged from this franchise, like ironically not the books themselves.
- 19:33They have gone missing at some point in my move I need to replace
- 19:36them. But I have like unique figures. I literally looking at the pitt
- 19:40and board. I have the Bread Bakes You Fat Clash, a Demon Heads
- 19:42Sex ba Bomb. I have the singing briefcase from the video game. Oh
- 19:48my god. I have a hardcore for this franchise. Oh my god,
- 19:55that's my partner, extreme levels. But the one that I think is the
- 20:00most to me is that I got to meet Brian le O'Malley at a signing
- 20:03action of these books Behind Me Seconds, which will be coming to movie theaters
- 20:08soon when it eventually gets production. It's it's confirmed, it's happening, and
- 20:12you're right is working on it, just need the week. But it was
- 20:17it was meeting him and seeing someone who like so did not fit the mold
- 20:22of what your classic like someone who's made it. He still felt very humble
- 20:26and like himself and like this whole thing was too big for him almost and
- 20:32as someone who's like in a creative field, the podcasting and the acting and
- 20:34the putting out content. It gives me so much hope anoying those people out
- 20:38there who do this like weirdly unique, niche thing that you don't think would
- 20:44become this stellar, worldwide phenomenon, and you can find your people and still
- 20:48be your weird little self and make it happen. So yeah to Brian le
- 20:53O'Malley, Yeah, to Brian le O'Malley, I agree with that sentiment for
- 20:59obvious reasons. But it is so good that like there are people out there
- 21:03who just seem to still be normal and have found their people people exactly.
- 21:10Yeah, I guess that was me meaning normal in the sense of not a
- 21:12billionaire psychopath. Yeah. Yes, that's a fantastic mus Drew. But but
- 21:18John, if you got a muse from from this franchise that you're so familiar
- 21:23with, Yeah, yeah, you know, it wasn't much. It wasn't
- 21:27as much of a struggle as I thought it would be. I mean,
- 21:29normally, when I come on this show, it's it's the soundtrack, but
- 21:33this time it's not. Sorry, Adra, but it's okay, that's fair.
- 21:37It's all nine you know, I had to give this a little bit
- 21:41of thought, but what I came up with was, I'm motivated in this
- 21:47episode by you know, this is the first time I've ever done it without
- 21:49my creative partner Ben Robinson. That everyone, all the all the listeners know
- 21:53and he comes on all the time. But I'm channeling Scott Pilgrim's like anxiety
- 22:00and his angst. I can I can identify with Scott Pilgrim when I'm watching
- 22:07the movie and he's pining over Ramona or you know, or just just feeling
- 22:10angst or anxiety about anything and everything. You know, I went through a
- 22:15lot of that in my especially in my younger years. So I'm I'm I'm
- 22:19entering into this episode with with a bit of anxiety, not knowing much about
- 22:26the property and you know, not wanting to let Drew down, and it's
- 22:30all it's almost too much, but you know, I'm gonna, I'm gonna
- 22:33go ahead and give it, give it my best shot. They can't all
- 22:36be Superman in Indiana. Jones, Oh, that's such a good muse.
- 22:41Yes, we love anxious heroes and this podcast is fueled by anxiety. Yes,
- 22:48right, teams, let's avoid our girlfriend by leaping out of the window
- 22:51and into the cold city. That is Round one. Round one is our
- 23:00trivia round, which this time is called Defeat the Evil Exes Classic. I
- 23:07thought I would have here the return of the high tech Gatesleeper's trivia board,
- 23:11the famous, the famous whiteboard, but I realize it's currently being used as
- 23:15a menu for some menu are far far you know, I mean. But
- 23:23that's okay, because this time it's not a set of random words. This
- 23:27time you actually have to defeat the Evil Exes via trivia. So if you
- 23:33could imagine on a board the six evil Exes. I've grouped the twins together
- 23:37for obvious reasons. Those will be the names you can select that will each
- 23:42correspond with a question. Some of those questions are straight up fandom trivia related
- 23:48to the X you selected. A couple have looser connections, but it's your
- 23:52choice. I'm letting you choose your own path to victory. So you must
- 23:56fight all of these exes one by one, team by team. So be
- 24:00three questions for each team, and we will be We will begin with subspace,
- 24:04whale, Highway. Pick an X. We're gonna choose the obvious obvious
- 24:10answer here the first one. Amuse Lucas Lee. Oh before one he knows
- 24:18the name of Yeah, Lucas Okay, you are going with Lucas Lee.
- 24:26Let's see how related to Lucas Lee. This question is which film did both
- 24:30Lucas Lee and Chris Evans star in? A Snow PIERSA, B, The
- 24:38Perfect Score or C Knives Out? Wait. Lucas Lee is a real person,
- 24:44so within the canon of Scott Pilgrim, Lucas Lee starred in one of
- 24:48these films. What it can't be Knives Out? Can it? Because that's
- 24:52way later? I feel like I so if we look at the timeline,
- 24:57Yeah, what were the other two other than Knive snow Piercer and The Perfect
- 25:02Skull? Perfect? Oh? I think the Perfect Score might be the Chris
- 25:07Evans directorial debut, which is not awesome. He's listening and he's gonna be
- 25:14so sad. I love you and you're the only man I would ever kiss
- 25:18on the lips. I don't know if that's a compliment towards you at all,
- 25:22like if you want that, but uh, we could keep digging the
- 25:26hole. We could go with the Perfect Storm. If that's Perfect Skull,
- 25:33the Perfect Score, it would make sense because it's kind of a meta thing
- 25:37if it's if it is his directorial debut. Snow Piercer was directed by the
- 25:40same guy who did Parasite and is later then Scott Pilgrim. So yeah,
- 25:47let's go perfect. Yeah, coffee content with knives out? It would be
- 25:52crazy, wouldn't that knives show out? What? What? What? What
- 25:56are we talking about? Is he going with the perfect skull? Yeah,
- 26:00let's do that. It's no, it's snow piers really. Yeah, it's
- 26:03mentioned in the in the film that four years seven stars in snow Pisa,
- 26:08so it probably was in pre production or something. The films that he mentions
- 26:12he's got to go, got to go starr in. That's crazy, that's
- 26:17super cool. It's a very obscure one. I was like, I look,
- 26:19vaguely sure was that one, but like I couldn't remember for sure.
- 26:22That's really crazy. So that's a tough question. But fun, fun little
- 26:26bit. Yeah, I'm the winner because I learned, but just for the
- 26:32purposes of the game. So the world winner even when he loses. How
- 26:40dare you talking of my copy? Not fun? The world? What a
- 26:47wonderful team name, what a wonderful world? Which which X would you like
- 26:51to go with? Does one of them call out to you? John?
- 26:53Well, I was talking ship to uh to the other team earlier about knowing
- 26:59the Nameames, and it was only because I have you on my team,
- 27:02so I certainly don't know. I think one of them's name Envy Right's character.
- 27:08Yes, technically, Oh that's true. She's the one that broke his
- 27:15heart. Yeah, we could stick with the gender and go with Roxy,
- 27:18my favorite. Oh that that's perfect. That's what I was gonna say.
- 27:22Next. There we go, nice and we're going with Roxy. Richter.
- 27:29Here is your question about Roxy. Roxy's sword can turn into a chain whip.
- 27:33This is said to be an homage to which Soul Caliber series character A
- 27:40Cassandra, Alexandra, b Isabella Valentine or c song Me. Nah, oh
- 27:48you want their full names? I only know her name again? Can you
- 27:51read the second one? Second one is Isabella Valentine? Yeah, John,
- 27:56how well do you know Soul Caliber? Not well? I remember were playing
- 28:00it when it was brand spanking new on like PS one. I never belayed
- 28:04the first one. I only got into the second one. But I had
- 28:07a buddy who very consistently ran the damn Chase Sword character and kicked my ass
- 28:11because he learned all of her bloody freaking combos. So my issue is,
- 28:17I know her name, but I know her as Ivy, and I I
- 28:19have to guess that it's the second one because I know the first one I
- 28:23know because Sandra Alexandra is a character from Soul Cawber. That one I know.
- 28:27The third one you gave me again, which was a song me Nah,
- 28:33who I also know as a character. So the only one whose name
- 28:36I don't know that I'm guessing would be Ivy's real name has to be be.
- 28:40So I don't have any reason to believe it, but I was leaning
- 28:44there or not believe it, but any any motivation to choose above any other.
- 28:49But I was feeling B, so I will fully support that, all
- 28:53right, going with B. Isabella Valentine, it absolutely is God you have.
- 28:59You've not fallen from my trap of not getting the nickname that I was
- 29:02gonna say. I'm like, oh, she has a real name, doesn't
- 29:03she? Damn it? Full Christian names for us. Most scandily clad character
- 29:10in viewing history, in my opinion, Yeah, I love when initials are
- 29:15a name. So Isabella Valentine I, Oh, it's Ivy, which is
- 29:22also years yeah, oh, yeah, yeah, she's I can remember her
- 29:27middle I never heard her last name, but it's Natalie with some of the
- 29:30v also. Oh, Scott Scott Pilgrim trivia or all over the place Scott
- 29:37Pilgrim trivia. I have non devolged so far based on Jesus said, I
- 29:42like, my hands are bleeding from clenching so hard not spouting. Let's let's
- 29:48not have Drew's hands bleed for too much longer and we'll move back on over
- 29:52to subspace whale highway pick an X. So I got to choose last time.
- 29:56Who are you feeling? Let's go for the big one, g man,
- 30:00Gideon, you go in for Gideon Graves? Goose goose? Yes,
- 30:06Okay, here's your question related to Gideon Graves. How did Gideon Graves form
- 30:11the League of Evil Exes A placing an ad in the classified section of the
- 30:17Toronto Star, b writing an embarrassing drunken rent on Craigslist, or c sending
- 30:25out a signal to the chips he had covertly planted on the other exes.
- 30:30Interesting. I don't remember the origin of the league at all. I don't
- 30:34know if I remember the origin, What if it's not the third one,
- 30:41Ramona has a chip? Oh okay in the film at least. Yeah.
- 30:45Yeah, the third one feels the most because I know the comic is a
- 30:48lot more bombastic than the movie in terms of like abilities and the things that
- 30:53people can do. So the third one feels right mm hmm, it's either
- 30:59going to be the first one or the third one. Yeah, well,
- 31:00the second one, because I feel like they're they're not even acknowledging it terrible,
- 31:08because it's like the third one is the most super villain and the first
- 31:11one is the most mundane. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, Hello seeking
- 31:15other people who dated a woman named Ramona Flowers for a for a club.
- 31:23Yeah. He's like a billionaire too. I think I think three is plausible.
- 31:27Millionaires don't put wanted ads out. Yeah yeah, so you're going with
- 31:33c sending out a signal to the chips you had covertly planted on the other
- 31:36axes. It's not I'm so sorry to God, it's being I was trying
- 31:41to get he writes an embarrassing drunken ransom Craigslist for two hours. Put the
- 31:45whole league together. Oh that the whole time. I know, I was
- 31:52just watching Drew's face. It was like that, that's what it looks like.
- 31:56I'm like, oh, he knows. This is the cruck of having
- 32:00us in the room. We were look at each other. Eye contact is
- 32:02very important. You were like, yeah, watching Drew to see reaction when
- 32:07the right answer is right, someone are ducking whatever. It's on my turn
- 32:09for safety. All right, So moving back on over to the world three
- 32:15x's remain, Which which X would you like? I'll be honest, I'm
- 32:19mostly curious to know what question you gave for Matthew Patel. Okay, absolutely,
- 32:23you can go with number one, Matthew Patel. What reason does Ramona
- 32:28Flowers give for dating Matthew Patel back in seventh grade? Oh? Yeah?
- 32:31Is it A she was bored and wanted her first kiss, b his emore
- 32:37fringe and hercut seemed cute at the time. Or c he was the only
- 32:42quote non white, non jock at her school, John, you have any
- 32:45insight on this one. I do not. Any of those seem very plausible,
- 32:49Like I can I can just imagine Mary Elizabeth Winstead saying any of those
- 32:54lines. So I am completely lost. Well, in this case, it
- 32:59is because he was the only non white, non jock in her school.
- 33:01Yes, that's one of the most famous lines in my in my mind when
- 33:06it comes to Scott Pilger, and one of the ones that dates it the
- 33:08most. I reckon, now, Jock's come in all colors? Yes,
- 33:15but congratulations, that is correct. Just some classic trivia, Just some classic
- 33:19trivia about the story. Sometimes that's what it is. Okay, back on
- 33:22over to the subspace Whale Highway. Should I call you the s s w
- 33:28H Yeah, yeah, that's all. That doesn't stand for anything as the
- 33:32subs if you want, Oh yeah, okay, I'll call you the subs
- 33:36one. So we got vegan and twins. Who was left? I like
- 33:42the vegan because he's Superman. You're going with todd Ingram. Todd Ingram,
- 33:46Yes, todd Ingram. Yeah. Okay, here's your question about Todd in
- 33:52Scott Pilgrim versus the World? What are the three strikes the vegan police declare
- 33:58as in fractions that Todd has made? Is it a half and half milk
- 34:02gelato and chicken parmesan, b whipped cream gelato and Chef Boyardes beef RONI see
- 34:09half and half milk gelato and chicken noodle soup. It's the first one.
- 34:14Yeah, gelato isn't vegan. Yeah, all of them though, yeah,
- 34:21because that's the quote. I do also think the first one, Yeah,
- 34:27chicken parmesan is also like the funniest. If you were going to be like,
- 34:29what do you mean, what are you talking about? I didn't know.
- 34:30I didn't know at all, the fact that gelato is the one,
- 34:32he argues content tempt you with the chef boy shut up. We cannot be
- 34:42sweating. You put that in there because you love chef chef boyard or you
- 34:45have like most ridiculous American products. I just think it's really funny to reference.
- 34:50It's my wife's week point two. I still come home some days which
- 34:52is like, I don't want to cook. I just eats a can of
- 34:54it. We see that chef on the happy chef on the can. You're
- 34:59like, that could be me chef can. Yes, you are correct,
- 35:07it is a It is of course half finish the serial points. I still
- 35:14so often whenever I ordered chicken at a Restaurctor and wife and chicken is a
- 35:17vegan okay. The world that leaves you with the Kati Nagi twins are you
- 35:25ready for your trivia question about the twins. I'm ready. We'll pick those,
- 35:30okay. Despite speaking throughout the graphic novel and anime series, why don't
- 35:36Kyle and Ken speak in Scott Pilgrim Versus The World? Is it a The
- 35:42only attractive Japanese twins, as they're described they could find, were models and
- 35:46not actors. When they tried acting lines of dialogue for the first time,
- 35:51Edgar Wright quickly decided they wouldn't talk. B Edgar Wright was quoted as saying
- 35:57that he wanted to save as much time as possible when a Thak six hole
- 36:00graphic novels into one movie. This included making the twins mute or see.
- 36:07The casting office forgot to write English speaking Japanese twins into the casting call,
- 36:12so when they arrived on set they had to slightly change the script. Interesting,
- 36:17it's quite a lot of that. So the problem is I know that
- 36:21they didn't speak English, that's like a well known thing, but I actually
- 36:24don't know if it was a casting issue or a if or if they were
- 36:30cast knowing they wouldn't speak I mm hmm. It's that's the tricksy part.
- 36:34Yeah, yeah, like that's why I was like, oh, okay,
- 36:36it's and then you'd be like, oh, you're doing it twice to me,
- 36:38ugh burying the fun fact and the two different answers, So I can't
- 36:42use it as a knowledge point. That's gate leapers. Good job, man,
- 36:46good job, good job. Trip them up, Oh, trick them
- 36:52like I I would like to think they wouldn't. They wouldn't make a mistake
- 36:58like not hiring actors or hiring non actors. Yeah, it feels a lot
- 37:04more Edgar Wright to be like, we just needed to look good. It
- 37:07doesn't matter if the speak English, because I am planning this to go this
- 37:09way. So A is where I want to is where I'm leaning. Oh
- 37:15yeah, okay. You know I have no no reason why I would why
- 37:22I would disagree and say no, I feel strongly about this one here.
- 37:24So let's just say you feel strongly about see, but I'm taking us to
- 37:30A and that way. If I'm wrong, you can take the knowledge knowing
- 37:32you beat me on one of these. Oh yeah, I used to.
- 37:35I remember doing that to Jason one episode. Oh yeah, I mean,
- 37:38I'm I'm kind of feeling this, but you know, no, John,
- 37:43we're going with I'm the expert here and alf I'm ready, I feel like
- 37:46an ass, well dream prepared to feel like an ass because it is silly.
- 37:54Yeah, there's just a slight difference in the trivia that whether they were
- 37:58models or whether they office was the one who made the mistake. But it
- 38:00was the casting office who made the mistake. Edgar Wright was fully expecting them
- 38:05to be able to speak English when when they showed up on set they were
- 38:08apparently, I've heard was taken down by semantics. I'll accept it. Yeah,
- 38:16that's the way you get taken down on this podcast. Look, that's
- 38:20the end of round one. That's we're out of exes. There were no
- 38:22more xes. Let's pick up all the gold coins on the floor and count
- 38:27them to reveal the scores. That's just Canadian money. I'm so so sorry.
- 38:36So we have subspace, Whale Highway are on one point, the world
- 38:40are on two points, nice and even still commanding lead. You have double
- 38:47our score. Yeah that's true, that's true. Okay, Up next is
- 38:51round two. But first some commercials, probably for Amazon dot CA's American counterparts,
- 38:57Amazon dot US. After this. Brown two is a classic around here,
- 39:07and it's called pitch it. It's the game in which our players take
- 39:12on the role of junior media executives to pitch ideas about the future of the
- 39:16Scott Pilgrim franchise. To me, a senior media executive, I love money,
- 39:22I love exploiting workers, and I love donating to right wing special interest
- 39:25groups. That's all. That's all media executives. How our teams will each
- 39:30have two minutes as they ride in the elevator with me to pitch their ideas
- 39:35to me. However, each player only has a minute each one minute as
- 39:38the elevator goes up, and then another minute as the elevator goes down.
- 39:43Imagine that in the theater of the mind, that that's what's happening when everyone
- 39:46sounds all panicked, because it's funny to imagine them in an enclosed space.
- 39:52Okay, so I have two prompts here. Both throw first a subspace whale
- 39:54highway. I think you got some caption up to do. So the prompts
- 40:00that will be for both teams, but first for your team is if Scott
- 40:04Pilgrim is about Scott Pilgrim and Scott Pilgrim takes off is largely the Ramona Flowers
- 40:08story. What about the other guys, huh, pitch me a spinoff story
- 40:14for any other side character. I'm gonna start something here. Yeah, yeah,
- 40:19okay, your time starts now. Two words, Knives out? Do
- 40:27you have more than the title? Two minutes over? So of the Scott
- 40:34Pilgrim characters. When I first watched the movie, I felt that the character
- 40:37who got shafted the most and had the most potential and just got absolutely just
- 40:44just dicked on, honestly by the circumstance of the story was knives Chow,
- 40:49seventeen year old school girl who is thrust into this world of music and then
- 40:53takes off like learns music, learn space, opera writing as all this potential
- 41:00to not only show why she has the potential of youth, but also the
- 41:07potential to excel past her relationship with Scott. She is not just a vehicle
- 41:10for Scott to go transition from one to another ten second. I think she
- 41:15has the ability to be more than anyone actually on the show too. Absolutely
- 41:22so, a post breakup with Scott Knives, we can see her advance in
- 41:29music, like graduate, go to college, and have more adventures of her
- 41:35own, maybe even lean harder into the music aspect. Because this had a
- 41:39lot. The Scott Pilgrim stories have a lot of themes within music, but
- 41:45also mostly video games. So with this one we can continue some of that
- 41:49similar styling to keep a similar feel, but play more heavily on the music
- 41:54themed tones in the sense of sounds have certain powers which can do X Y
- 42:04Z or create certain effects in the world. Basically, her superpower can be
- 42:12music seconds and she grew. Like the other characters, she is not defined
- 42:16by her past relationships, but she did learn and grow and get things from
- 42:21them. Yes, there we go, there's your time, all right,
- 42:24lovely, lovely little pitch for I agree with the sentiment there of knives being
- 42:30like a I wouldn't say got shafted, but absolutely I agree with that or
- 42:40got dicked on as well. Quote I've never even kissed a boy. Heavy
- 42:47focused on music as well from both of you, focusing on the music aspects
- 42:52in her future, maybe like leaning more into that than maybe the video game
- 42:55aspects or dro you said something that was sounds have powers. Sounds have powers?
- 43:02Did you expand on that? What do you mean by that? I
- 43:06just mean, like one of the visuals that we see in Scott Pilgrim is
- 43:12shredding on a guitar and sound waves coming out and having an impact actually power.
- 43:17Ye. Yes, so like hitting hard and someone goes like the sound
- 43:22can push someone back in physical space. Yeah. No, I thought it
- 43:24was just like a very different way of saying like music is beautiful. I
- 43:30think it goes ways. It is powerful, but also it can slap you.
- 43:36Slapping the bass is a fully new meaning in this world. Yes.
- 43:38That was one of my favorite things about Scott Pilgrim was the magic realism,
- 43:42but also the casual sense of magic realism. Like in the movie when someone
- 43:45turns into coins, people are like, huh coins, But then like in
- 43:49the anime and the video games, people are like, yeah, Scott does
- 43:51that, and it's like, what the fuck are you talking about? What
- 43:53It's like a level of like it's not even like you suspend disbelief, it's
- 43:58the world has already done that for you, Like this is just the way
- 44:00the world works sometimes like that just yeah hh okay, Well, I'll reserve
- 44:05my numerical score for you until I hear the other pitch because it will be
- 44:09weighted against how good or bad that one is, so we will move on
- 44:14over to the world. And yeah, it's the exact same prompt pitching a
- 44:17side character to build a spin off off of, And I feel like Drew
- 44:22should probably start this because John might be hearing the information about that character for
- 44:25the first time. Within Drew's sixte I know. I was sitting here going
- 44:30going back and forth. I was like, do I try to go first
- 44:34because I feel bad that Drew's doing all the heavy lifting, or and he
- 44:37can pick up the slack, or do I just try to bullshit? Part
- 44:40of me was also like, I'm cut it down for you to go first
- 44:43if there's a character you know that you want to start with, because I
- 44:45can, I can comfortably expound on any of them, I feel like so
- 44:49honestly, like I thought I had thought knives as well, but I don't
- 44:52think I have a solid enough minute to talk about my other idea, which
- 44:57which would be which would be Wallace? Okay, so it's up to you.
- 45:02How's this. I'll start and I'll let you take it because I'm gonna
- 45:05I'm gonna give you a good ballpark. Here. There we go, Let's
- 45:07do it. Okay, Drew, So have you ready? I'll start the
- 45:10time at So I feel like that character who got severely overlooked going from the
- 45:15comics to the film was Young Neil, and I think the anime did a
- 45:19really good job of giving him like a better characterization. But it's made me
- 45:22realize how much we need a Young Neil series. And I feel like the
- 45:28best comparison to Young Neil is just he is the George Costanza of the Scott
- 45:34Pilgrim world. He is so unspecial, he is so regular, he is
- 45:38so average, but the most amazing things happen around him. And I would
- 45:43just love to give him existing in a world where it's him going about the
- 45:46most mundane day to day tasks, but in the most fantastical world. Like
- 45:51just an episode of Young Neil goes to the grocery store and while theyre has
- 45:55to find the last thing of Oreo's special edition Oreos he wants for some reason,
- 46:00but there is a ninja attack going on. There's no like, this
- 46:04is crazy, it's just see, okay, I can't take Aisle four.
- 46:07There's a law of a monster again, like I hopefully they're in Aisle three
- 46:09this time, and just seeing the blase a realization of a normal person in
- 46:15a fantastic All right, you got to hand it over, now, go
- 46:17for it. A minute, all right, and a minute starts now,
- 46:19John, if there's one thing that Scott Pilgrim versus the world, let's say
- 46:24the movie does it's big, bombastic action. Like we've touched on before,
- 46:31people do the craziest things and just consider it normal. Well, one thing
- 46:36that we could do with Young Neil is go insular, you know, we
- 46:38where like Drew said, he we see all these crazy things going on around
- 46:43him, but he's on sort of a sort of a journey inside his mind
- 46:46as to why why all these things are happening around him and what part he
- 46:52plays in it if it's not a fantastical one. And he has sort of
- 46:54like an existential philosophical journey about about why he is so special by being so
- 47:01normal in a world that is so spombastic. So he needs to find his
- 47:07own purpose being such a mundane part of a special world lovely stuff that is
- 47:15stellar. That's a that's very impressive, John, considering everything. Yeah,
- 47:22like Drew kicking it off as a Young Nail series, first of all,
- 47:25you're playing to your audience. Dream I've not I've not revealed anything. But
- 47:30he was my favorite part of the anime. I love the whole subplot.
- 47:34It was fantastic. He was one of my favorite parts of the movie.
- 47:39That's a tough question, Zelda Mary. Yes, I've got written down special
- 47:49edition Orioles. I'll be honest, I sail. I was very con of
- 47:59all the list and why I needed special edition yellow and blue oreos. But
- 48:09it's fitting for young Neil. Is the thing that's a reason that he would
- 48:13be in a serious young wild things, wild things would happen. And then
- 48:16then John, all I needed to hear was it's the it's a journey inside
- 48:21the mind of young Neil. I loved at the idea of we're taking the
- 48:24high concept stuff but making it insular. Yeah, so I'm going to hand
- 48:28out some points for this teams. In the boardroom, I'm going to say,
- 48:34No, we're in an elevator, aren't We're not in a boardroom.
- 48:37It's a really fancy elevator. Yeah, it's a tall building too, Yeah,
- 48:42big time. Okay, I'm going to say, look, I love
- 48:45the Knives pitch. I loved it. I love the idea in terms of
- 48:50giving Knives a spin off, but there wasn't as much for me to hold
- 48:53on to. There in terms of like other than just the music aspect.
- 48:58So I'm going to say three points for some space, and I'm going to
- 49:00say four points for the world. Yeah, I do love Idiot. I
- 49:05think if anyone does deserve their own spinoff, it is one hundred percent Knives,
- 49:08especially with the romance they started building with her and Kim at the end
- 49:12of the anime. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I'd love to see
- 49:15her go on her own like Batman journey, you know, learning all these
- 49:19all these things from experts, and then shows back up with a little little
- 49:22color in her hair and ready to kick some ass. That would be cool.
- 49:24Yeah, that'd be good. Yeah, you should have said that.
- 49:30Okay, we've got one more prompt here in this round, and it's a
- 49:32bit it's a bit sillier. We can get pretty silly with this one.
- 49:37Scott Pilgrim is Canada's third biggest media franchise behind Degrassi, and I assume some
- 49:42sort of Tim Horton's related context, and what do media franchises need? They
- 49:47need theme parks, So pitch me Scott Pilgrim World. What kinds of rides,
- 49:53shows, activities and foods which you find there? So I guess you'll
- 49:58each as a player have a in it to cram in as many ideas as
- 50:00possible, and a Subspace is still trailing. I'm gonna say Subspace can go
- 50:06first again. Okay, Okay, well I lead, I lead first last
- 50:09time. Hell yeah, I can lead it again. No, I'm in
- 50:19it? Yeah done, hell yeah. Honestly I love that. That's a
- 50:30complimentary. God, we are all young, meal, so Ordre, are
- 50:36you ready to pitch Scott Scott Pilgrim World. You don't have to call it
- 50:38that. You can call it whatever you want, but a Scott Pilgrim theme
- 50:40park absolutely, I'm ready. Okay, your time starts now. There are
- 50:45so many different options that you can go with here for a Scott Pilgrim theme
- 50:50park, a lot of rides, like a roller coaster through the Subspace Highway
- 50:55or the Time Portal Allah rock and roller coaster where it's like an indoor you
- 51:02can do a lot of really cool lighting, visual effects. I'm imagining some
- 51:07like competitive aspects with people you brought, like a fighting game, like a
- 51:12visual fighting game where you can VR fight people and see the effects as they
- 51:17are in the games. The food options are great. Garlic bread is everywhere
- 51:22for starters. Also tee shops with too many tea options is going to be
- 51:29huge for us ten seconds. The entire thing is built like us, like
- 51:37a standard Toronto street, but behind every door, something wild is happening.
- 51:44All right, handa over to Jason and I'll tell you what is behind each
- 51:46door. I think we have six doors lined up, and behind each door
- 51:51it's themed after one of the Xes. Right, So garlic bread is everywhere.
- 51:55Sure for my vegans, for my vegetarians out there, we've got Todd
- 52:00todd Ingram's World, you know, so we're being inclusive. It's also gluten
- 52:04free. Uh, there is chicken palm there as well. Contamination. We've
- 52:09got a Lucas Lee skate park, you know what I mean? Uh.
- 52:14Over in the Matthew Battel area, that's that's where your multimedia, that's where
- 52:16your theater, your shows are going to be held. That where there's a
- 52:20lot of effects. There's there's flying ghosts, demon ladies. What's what's the
- 52:23deal with that? And I think connecting all of them is is that Toronto
- 52:30Street and then the Subspace Highway as well. I think that's our connection and
- 52:32that's our unifications there. What else Who's who else? Who's the next?
- 52:37The Nuggie Twins music? Love it? Yeah, all right, that's your
- 52:45time. Yeah, you crims a lot in there though, Yeah, I
- 52:47was. That's a lot of a lot of good good rides. Uh,
- 52:52the Subspace roller coaster of course, your team name. That was a strong
- 52:55start there. Garlic bread everywhere, Yeah, sounds like class. Garlic bread
- 53:04is delicious. But you're also thinking of the vegans as well. With an
- 53:07entire realm, an entire section, I don't imagine them like the sections at
- 53:14like a Disney World where it's like different areas. It's going to be a
- 53:16big theme park. Yeah, huge investment. Yeah, bigger than Toronto itself.
- 53:22Classic all right, gentrification of Toronto begins with this, and it begins
- 53:30Yes, I made an assumption. Oh no, you're very right. You're
- 53:34twenty years too late there. Okay, so before I hand out my judgment,
- 53:38that feels too strong a word, but I've used it now judgment.
- 53:43We will move back on over to the world. Who would like to start?
- 53:47I'm okay starting this. I was gonna say, lets you start this.
- 53:51One's more conceptual. Yea. Whenever you're ready, John, I'll start
- 53:54the time of when you stop. All right, so we're let me tell
- 53:59you a little bit about some of the rides and features we have at scott
- 54:01Pilgrim call in the world. You've got a Hall of X's Dark Ride,
- 54:08where you it's it's sort of a spooky, haunted house dark ride where you
- 54:12you navigate through all six xes, ending with with the big Man himself.
- 54:19We also have Splash Bob Bomb, It's a log flume ride where where it's
- 54:23that very music centric you get lots of lots of fun tunes as you twist
- 54:29and turn around around all the watery spillways. We've got Knives Tunnel of Heartbreak,
- 54:37let's call it that. It's a little spin on your normal Tunnel of
- 54:42love where this time you you just see the all the steps of a relationships
- 54:46going sour. And then we also have the the Time to Mature free Fall,
- 54:52where you you where you decide you're going to be a grown up and
- 54:55move in with Ramona and fall from a tower to see salmon alright, you
- 55:01love. And then of course after a fun day out in the park with
- 55:08all these amazing rides in the and I also a pictured being like kind of
- 55:12like the small world version of Toronto where there's a lot of like Toronto esque
- 55:15landmarks, which is really just a cend tower, but it's like done in
- 55:19a way where the figure than it actually is, like Disney does with the
- 55:22Castle, and it's just as ugly as it is in real life. I
- 55:25promise you're not miss a shade f Oh god. Yeah, that place is
- 55:30horrible and he was right, but we're gonna make it full with all these
- 55:35amazing rides. And then of course, when you need some time off,
- 55:37you can go to any of the many great pizza places where everyone has an
- 55:42amazing arcade where you can win tickets to get cool replicas from the movie,
- 55:45and there's an animatronic bands that play there, whether it be the Clash Demon
- 55:51Head or an animatronic concept of the Boys. And then to top the entire
- 55:54thing off, you get like the like the chance to like kind of pose
- 55:58into the movie. They have like spots you can go around and like replay
- 56:00sing to the movie, and you can cast them photos. I get,
- 56:05Yeah, I get what you're talking about. There's like no good word for
- 56:07that. Yeah, right, picture face in the hole, picture face in
- 56:12the whole Yeah, American classic. Yes, the picture face in the whole
- 56:19North American classic. We also have them in England. Oh, the sexy
- 56:28lady the bikini and the strong man exactly the Yeah, the sexy sexy lady
- 56:34in the BIGINNI the dog as well, the dog being walked on the beach.
- 56:37Yes, yeah, yeah, that doesn't make any sense. It's just
- 56:40a human face on the What horror is this? You have you seen?
- 56:45Like seventeenth century art, the cats, the human faces. No one has
- 56:52ever seen a cat ty paintings. I have too, I'm not I know
- 56:55they look like Yeah. I loved that pitch as well. I thought there
- 57:01wouldn't be any ideas left, but you you sure had them just right right
- 57:05out the gate. John comm of the World, Scott Pilgrim, the world
- 57:10is just fantastic, the whole of evil x's that's great splash for Bomb.
- 57:16I love when we went with splash my bomb and not the splash and demon
- 57:21head. But it works so well. Still. Yeah, you can't do
- 57:25the seamen ahead Yeah oh geez. Yeah, that's the triple ax section of
- 57:30the Back at Night Only. Yeah, behind the Little Curtain Adults Only after
- 57:36Hours and Drew, you had some great ideas in your pitch. As well,
- 57:43including the animatronic bands. But the good chunk of yours was bashing Toronto
- 57:49as well, which may be fair. What can I say? What we
- 57:54do? It's just we are we are planning on sort of building this theme
- 57:59park in Toronto, or at least the Toronto metropolitan area, so it's I
- 58:04don't know if it's best to sort of insult. Yeah, but if you're
- 58:07building anywhere around Toronto, it's only gonna drum up business. Okay, fair
- 58:10enough? Yeah, something else to see other than the what the what tower?
- 58:15Exactly? Okay? All right, Look, I loved both teams pitches
- 58:21there, so I'm gonna make it entirely redundant, as though we've never been
- 58:25to play this round. I'm gonna give four points to each team. Nice
- 58:29my favorite score. I'd go to either one of these mm hmm yeah yeah.
- 58:36What is it that that? Not the knives out one? The one
- 58:37after that where you become an adult. I'm just picturing like the Tower of
- 58:45Terror thing and Disney, but like every day, it stops periodically and you
- 58:47have like moments of like seeing like the growth of a relationship and then the
- 58:52like and this is what marriage is like you're settling. Now you need to
- 58:59grow. It's a person or else or else you die alone. It's all
- 59:07a metaphor. You don't actually splat on the ground, not this one.
- 59:12That's the end of the round. Let's use numerology. That's all across this
- 59:16franchise to calculate the latest scores. Lots of hidden numbers everywhere the subspace,
- 59:22whale highway or on eight points. The world are on ten points. Keep
- 59:28an early, Yeah, lovely stuff. Round three next, But first we've
- 59:32got to play some more ads, mostly for if you live in the US.
- 59:37If you live in Canada, congratulations, I assume you have zero capitalism.
- 59:42Back soon. Round three is our fandom game, and it's called first
- 59:52Trap. Now if you're a millennial. The cast for twenty ten's Scott Pilgrim
- 59:57versus the World is inspired casting and features an ensemble of stars that my generation
- 1:00:04is low key, high key, medium key obsessed. So if I were
- 1:00:08to read a real first post from the kind of unhinged tumbler dot com,
- 1:00:14Yeah, would our teams be able to recognize the real life human being as
- 1:00:17in the actor that they're lusting over? Yeah, each post I will read
- 1:00:22and it will be for both teams. Because the cast is so expansive,
- 1:00:27each team will have two guesses each, so every player is going to have
- 1:00:30a guess as to who is being spoken about. If either of the guesses
- 1:00:35are correct on your team, your team gets a point. And feel free
- 1:00:38to look up the cast list as we play. I promise it won't help
- 1:00:42that much. Okay, really, I'm just pulling it up to some of
- 1:00:45the names. I'll do that thing. Well, forget a name once in
- 1:00:47a while. Absolutely, yeah, I was. I was looking at it
- 1:00:51and was like, there's like twelve to fifteen people. This could believably be
- 1:00:53about. Yeah, I forgot my phone in my car. I'm pretty sure.
- 1:00:58I help. You can share a cast list? Oho? Okay,
- 1:01:02god, thank you, thank you. Playing a secondary game? Which of
- 1:01:06these cast members am I thirsting over? And she's like ageless, it's amazing,
- 1:01:12she's like forty. What you say that like that's old or something?
- 1:01:20She's ancient? Oh my god. The joke in the show being she's a
- 1:01:28thirty year old person. Yeah, a seventeen year old ye? Okay,
- 1:01:31are we all we already do? We all have the Scott Pilgrim cast in
- 1:01:36front of us? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, Okay, So here is
- 1:01:39your first thirst post, and they're all from a non I didn't want to
- 1:01:44put anyone on blast. They're all from a non here. It is.
- 1:01:47If I had to hug anyone, anyone in the world, probably this guy.
- 1:01:52He just he seems like he really needs it. Oh wow, Okay,
- 1:01:59so we will. I'm gonna take an answer from each player. We'll
- 1:02:01hear everyone's answers. So Jason, we'll start with you. We we actually
- 1:02:06looking in the annals of my brain. We actually had a comment that was
- 1:02:08very similar to this four Supernatural which Drew was on, but it was for
- 1:02:13one of the boys. Yes, we did. Yeah, oh wow,
- 1:02:15yeah, has a language. Yeah, and my choice for this one is
- 1:02:22gonna be Michael Sarah. Okay, going with Michael Sarah, classic the lead
- 1:02:28Auldre. I'm gonna go for Johnny Simms, Young Neil. Going for Johnny
- 1:02:31Sims, Young Neil. Okay, that's a good pick. Let's find out
- 1:02:36who the worlds are gonna go with Drew, I'm torn between twos. I
- 1:02:38want to seeho John says first. Okay, John, you know question is
- 1:02:44there there's no repeats, right, and there'll be no repeats in this Okay,
- 1:02:50I'm going to go then with Jason Schwartzman Gideon. Okay, that was
- 1:02:57one of my twos, So I'm gonna go with my other one. I'm
- 1:02:59with Jason, I think it's Michael Sarah and Drew is going with Michael Sarah.
- 1:03:04I can reveal that both teams have scored a point. This one is
- 1:03:07Michael Sarah. John. I was so like, I was so between the
- 1:03:12two, and I'm like, please say one of the two. Okay,
- 1:03:15that's good to know, because I I should have phrased it better when I
- 1:03:16said in no repeats, I meant, can we guess the same person that
- 1:03:21something? The team? Cool? Yeah, it's I guess like you you
- 1:03:24could if you were hyper confident. But I suppose tactically it would be best
- 1:03:29to each guess a different a different cast member. Yeah, I mean it
- 1:03:32wouldn't. It wouldn't have saved me anything anyway. Yeah, they're all good
- 1:03:39guesses to be fair. Do we do we agree with the statement? Does
- 1:03:43Michael Sarah really seem like he needs a hug? Like especially when they when
- 1:03:50he comes home really sad, Like I'm picturing the gift of him from arrested
- 1:03:52Development where he just comes over, hls over. That's so funny. It
- 1:04:00was hug. I thought you said hook and I thought that was just some
- 1:04:03some kids slang for or something. Hook him. I've give him the old
- 1:04:12hook. This guy bag them tag him? Where would you houck him?
- 1:04:19Go right into the bone. Okay, let's let's have another thirsty extract.
- 1:04:27Yeah, that's that's a horrible phrase. Okay, here it is. You
- 1:04:30know what I used to think, why is she always posting thirst traps?
- 1:04:35But now I realize I might just be the one who's thirsty. Sue me?
- 1:04:41I want her to top me? Mm hmmm, mm hmmm. And
- 1:04:46which actor always posts thirst trip? This is gonna be my personal I don't
- 1:04:49know if they do, but this is gonna be my personal pick for the
- 1:04:54the comment to how I feel about this person? All right, well,
- 1:04:57we'll keep the same order because it will be less confusing for me. Okay,
- 1:05:00Jason, who have you got for this one? Bree Larsen pre Lawson,
- 1:05:03Yeah, okay, Aldre, I'm also gonna go with my heart Aubrey
- 1:05:06plazare plaza. We got Breeze are powerful women in Aubrey Plaza. Moving on
- 1:05:13over to the world, John, you know I was thinking Aubrey Plaza as
- 1:05:16well. Okay, maybe like all three of those are my top ones.
- 1:05:20But I've got a weird thing, and I'm gonna say I think it'd be
- 1:05:24Mary Elizabeth to Mary Elizabeth. Yeah, Okay, we just we just found
- 1:05:29out who all of our cast would like to be topped by. Yes.
- 1:05:31Yes, if she's enough for you and McGregor, she's good enough for me.
- 1:05:38Okay. So we have pree Lawson, we have Aubrey Plaza, we
- 1:05:43have another old pre plaza. Yeah, and we have Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
- 1:05:45It's Anna Kendrick, isn't it. It's not Anna Kendrick, Jason, you
- 1:05:48are getting a point for your team. Ah, it's pre Lawson. I
- 1:05:56was. I was very four way tied. I'll be honest. Those are
- 1:05:59like my top four hole. Uhh no, Captain Mommy wins out though understandable.
- 1:06:05All right, Let's let's have another one of these first posts from and
- 1:06:11on once more. Here it is. He is my number one, baby
- 1:06:15girl. I am him. Oh, he is me. Oh we are
- 1:06:19one. He's going to be all I think and talk about forever and always.
- 1:06:26I know who I All right, Jason, we'll stop with you baby
- 1:06:32girl is a very specific phrase, and just based on Adre's reaction, I
- 1:06:36feel like I know who she's gonna pick, so strategically, I am gonna
- 1:06:43say it's not it. I'm just gonna confess he's my baby girl. Okay,
- 1:06:47Chris Evans, you canna say Chris Evans, Yeah, your number one
- 1:06:50baby girl? And Odre, who's your number one baby girl? If this
- 1:06:58is not about Kiaran Kulkin, yep, I'm going to log on and post
- 1:07:04it about Kieran. Okay, I'll just going with Kieran Kilkin the world.
- 1:07:11Who've you got over that? I mean, you guys, you guys did
- 1:07:14it? Like? Those are the two. It's not It's not gonna be
- 1:07:15Brandon Rath. It's not gonna be Jason Schort. I mean it could be
- 1:07:19Michael Sarah again, but I mean right, but no, Reapeat, It's
- 1:07:28it's gotta be Chris Evans, like like it, that's it, right?
- 1:07:31All right? John's got another Chris Evans on the boards, Drew, who
- 1:07:34are you going with? My heart wants to say, Kieren colkn Also,
- 1:07:41that's very much my mind went as well. But I don't know there is
- 1:07:44for some reason Brandon Ruth. Something something about it, I don't know what
- 1:07:48it is, makes me feel like, yes, he's a powerful man on
- 1:07:51the outside, but you're just a little girl on the inside. That's how
- 1:07:55I feel about Chris Evans, Superman, beautiful puppy dog guys. I'm like,
- 1:08:01no, you're soft though you're Yeah, those big knives out of sweaters
- 1:08:06he wears. Oh god. Anyways, I know I respect the pic Drew,
- 1:08:17but it is Audre who's going to have banked the point here because this
- 1:08:20is about Kieran Coulkin. I know how they talked about the internet. Check
- 1:08:28out our Succession episode. Here's your next first post. Her reading thirst tweets
- 1:08:34in this video will be my cause of death. She should rail me.
- 1:08:41Okay, that's the first tweet. Yeah, I feel of the celebrities here,
- 1:08:47who would do a g Q Beata Thirst tweet it's Aubrey Plaza. I
- 1:08:53think it absolutely is, But just I'm going to do somebody else so that
- 1:08:57we definitely get a point. Chris Evans I wrote that about Chris. I'll
- 1:09:03go with Anna Kendrick just to like Gondrick a Hedge betting. I do think
- 1:09:08it is Aubrey Plaza. But I'm going to hedge my bets. Yeah.
- 1:09:11I always got that vibe while watching the Picture Perfect franchise. So the World's
- 1:09:16John, Who have you got for this one? Oh? Geez? I
- 1:09:19feel like like I always just feel like I'm miming somebody else and then leaving
- 1:09:24Drew to to you know, just but I mean the expert. It's fine.
- 1:09:29I said this about Chris Evans and I was wrong then, But like,
- 1:09:32it's got to be Aubrey Plaza, right, Yeah, So I don't
- 1:09:40worry if you were if you didn't say Aubrey, I was gonna say Aubrey.
- 1:09:43Yeah, I mean, if you're thinking Aubrey, I may I wouldn't
- 1:09:46mind going Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Okay, go ahead, I'll take Aubrey Plaza
- 1:09:51and Harvey that one. All right, so we've gone. I'm really cornered
- 1:09:56you that time. Look, I think our teams figured this one out.
- 1:10:01It's a point for each team. It is Aubrey Plaza. Fo us seen
- 1:10:05the video. God, she's the best interview ever. What she is villainous,
- 1:10:15She's so good. Okay, your next first post. Wow, I
- 1:10:20am such a lesbian. Look at her. I figured those muscles difficult she
- 1:10:31can get it. Whoa, I mean, it was a lot of like
- 1:10:35slamming the keyboard. It's tough to pronounce. Fun enough, you did exactly
- 1:10:42how I heard in my head. I try. I don't really know when
- 1:10:47she shows her muscles ever, but I just have an inkling of Mary Elizabeth
- 1:10:51Winstead. I guess an inkling of Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Yeah, let's go
- 1:10:58Alison pill throwing in first shout for Alison Bilber. No, we'll stick with
- 1:11:03it, We'll stick with it, We'll stick okay, and moving on over
- 1:11:08to the world. I'm gonna go Ellen Wong. She was in glow and
- 1:11:14oh ye, maybe she showed some muscle on that. I'm not sure.
- 1:11:16That's that's that's a good point. Is that her and Clo Wow? Oh?
- 1:11:21Because they're not thirsting over them in Scott pilgril Oh. Yeah, this
- 1:11:27is the actors. Yes, God, damn's Drew. How about yourself?
- 1:11:30I'm gonna have to go with my girl Elizabeth again, going for Mary Elizabeth
- 1:11:34again. We've we've not heard her so far, so she was bound to
- 1:11:39show up at one point. It's a point for each team because both teams
- 1:11:41have said that Mary Elizabeth winst A. It's it's very clearly her with the
- 1:11:45hammer and the that. Yeah, I know that's I know that's scene.
- 1:11:51I think it may have even been a below a Madam Webb trailer. Is
- 1:11:56she and Madam Webbers? I don't think web She was hunt Triss in Birds
- 1:12:00of Prey. Oh maybe that was it. Then was also in the clover
- 1:12:03Fields movie. It was definitely a superhero movie. Okay, okay, I
- 1:12:08was I think it would have been that one. Yeah, yeah, I
- 1:12:11was gonna call that out at some point, Like I felt bad earlier when
- 1:12:14I was like, oh yeah, we had Captain America and Superman. I'm
- 1:12:16like, oh yeah, we also had Captain Marvel and the Huntress. Yeah
- 1:12:19this movie. So yeah, I guess I shouldn't be the sexist here.
- 1:12:24No, no, I talk about who's you? It's great, No,
- 1:12:26just me for assuming it's Madam Webb. I still can't wait to see Kieran
- 1:12:29Culkin's role in a superhero movie. Oh, play Kiaran Culkin in a superhero
- 1:12:33movie. Make it happen. God, I'd go see it. See him
- 1:12:38being like Speedball or something. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I
- 1:12:41have one final first extract for the both of you I said that word again.
- 1:12:45It doesn't sound good with extract, the thing they used to make gatorade.
- 1:12:53I feel like, oh no, gosh, okay, here is that's
- 1:12:59first post j f C. I thought he literally disappeared off the face of
- 1:13:03the earth. But he's back. My angel, my boy child, my
- 1:13:10angel, my boy child. I got my Pike. I don't know if
- 1:13:16he's been back in anything. Johnny Simmons, Johnny Simmons only because he's young
- 1:13:23Neil. That's that's who I was going to go for. So let's you
- 1:13:29know, oh, oh, you know, let's we're gett into the great
- 1:13:38profile pictures here, Yeah, doing Will Boughs Party Goer number three. Okay,
- 1:13:45but Bill Hayter is the voice, so that's about Will Forte. Let's
- 1:13:50let's go. Is he actually in this movie? He's like the older and
- 1:13:59he's also really old, like he's not young boy child at all. Will
- 1:14:02go for sat Ya Baba, you go because we've got Johnny Simmons and sat
- 1:14:09Ya Baba on this team. Okay, we will move on over to the
- 1:14:14to the world. I'm gonna go with Brandon Routh. I feel like he
- 1:14:17like he disappeared for a while and even though he was doing c W stuff,
- 1:14:20you know, for a little bit there, like he I don't know,
- 1:14:24I feel like he disappeared and then popped back in. Okay shows anymore,
- 1:14:32they're gone. Honestly, we're better off for it. But this one
- 1:14:40has to be Jason Schwartzman going with Jason Swartzman. It's a good good picks
- 1:14:46here, right, for different answers, really very believable picks as well.
- 1:14:50And I can say one team is getting a point there is there is a
- 1:14:55correct answer that it's Johnny Simmons, Jason from know what he's from. So
- 1:15:04he was in a bunch of things around about the same time as Scott Pilgrim.
- 1:15:08But he stopped acting in twenty sixteen and returned for the anime for Scott.
- 1:15:13Oh, very cool. So it's cool that they were strong enough of
- 1:15:17a story and a meant enough that he came out of retirement. It.
- 1:15:21I remember reading a thing about him like having like retired from acting, but
- 1:15:26he was like for this, I'll come back. So that's so good.
- 1:15:28That's nice. Oh right, Well, I think that that game changed things
- 1:15:31up a bit. Oh, Jason's that's what we've learned. I know,
- 1:15:41my internet so let's check that combo multiplier so we can accurately calculate the latest
- 1:15:47scores or the high scores. We have the world who are on thirteen points
- 1:15:54okay, but the team that have managed to overtake Subspace Whale Highway are on
- 1:15:58fourteen points our internet sirs, right, Jason, I don't know. Look,
- 1:16:11anyone can still win the quick fire round, as we know, can
- 1:16:13change everything in an instant. It was very close last episode as well.
- 1:16:17But before we get to the quick Fire round, let's talk prizes. This
- 1:16:21episode, Star Prize is the concept of dating in your early twenties. It
- 1:16:27sucks. Everyone thinks they're an adult, but they act like high schoolers and
- 1:16:30I'm so glad to be on the other side of it. Amen. Yeah,
- 1:16:34Hi, I'm dating in my late twenties and it still sucks. Everyone's
- 1:16:40delayed because of the pandemic. Late twenties is the new early Thanks Matt,
- 1:16:45thanks for that. Everyone here is married. But our winning team will also
- 1:16:53receive a beautiful weekend get away for two to snowy Toronto. Actually, this
- 1:17:00podcast does aim to be carbon neutral, so you'll have to book your own
- 1:17:03flights and the hotel, but go to Toronto if you want to. If
- 1:17:11you want to, apparently drew dozen up. Next is our crucial quick fire
- 1:17:17around, but first we must play one final set of ads after this PSA
- 1:17:23from the Wheat Lobby. Bread does not make you fat. Studies have shown
- 1:17:28that one to two loaves per day is a perfectly healthy amount for any growing
- 1:17:31human that's crazy, buy more bread. It will make you strong like a
- 1:17:35powerful vegan. Our final quick fire around will test your broader pop culture knowledge,
- 1:17:46and it's called Battle of the Bands, of course it is. In
- 1:17:50this game I will give our players clues to a fictional band from pop culture
- 1:17:56history. Those clues will be given in the style of an Internet hips the
- 1:18:00reviewing their musical style and all round creative persona. And when I say fictional,
- 1:18:05some of these artists have played live shows or even released music in some
- 1:18:10cases, but the point is they originated in a work of fiction. Oh
- 1:18:15and there's of course a classic Gates Leapers twist. You need to confidently say
- 1:18:19we are band name one, two, three, four, give us a
- 1:18:24countdown, so as loud and confident as you can possibly be. It's quick
- 1:18:28fire, so you buzz in by yelling out your team name let's practice that.
- 1:18:31Now, Wald, what are you just say whale world versus whale say
- 1:18:39wal something that won't be confusing. So let's let's do an example. We're
- 1:18:45to try and work on a hipster voice that's American. So first up on
- 1:18:50this list, we have an American blues and soul revivalist band founded in nineteen
- 1:18:57seventy eight. It began with perform says live on a Saturday night and even
- 1:19:02though they're ex cons, they do a lot of work for charity. Plus
- 1:19:06they're anti Nazi, which is cool. Oh wow, the practice one not
- 1:19:14stirring any answers. So it was on SNL. SNL band Okay, I
- 1:19:21can like picture a few bands from SNL, but I can't think of any
- 1:19:25of their names. It's not the cow Bell guy. I don't think there's
- 1:19:29anything about anti Nazism. Anyway, this might be a sign for how this
- 1:19:33this Maybe maybe it'll get easier. It was the Blues Brothers I was looking
- 1:19:40for. They were an SNL thing. The anti knots well, most people
- 1:19:46in the film, well it's fucking think, wouldn't you, But yes in
- 1:19:54the in the film. So let's let's see how this goes and if you
- 1:19:59don't know the name of the band, say the media franchise and I'll count
- 1:20:01that as well. Okay, so it's we are Blank one two three four,
- 1:20:06Yes, yes, like when that hits the easiest, which sometimes he
- 1:20:09goes, oh shit, franchise. If you can just just get one word
- 1:20:15from it, it's fine. Yeah, okay, I will stop the timer.
- 1:20:20So next up super bubblegum pop boy band influenced by the late nineties boom
- 1:20:28and also some K wave as well. Largely marketed at tweens, although you
- 1:20:32know it's the parents who bankroll these things. I turn red admitting this,
- 1:20:36but Whale, yes, Jason, we are Big Time Rush one two three
- 1:20:42four. I'm so sorry that's not the correct answer. Was it a bad
- 1:20:45guess though? Right? Yeah? Big Time Rush? Yeah, yeah,
- 1:20:47they're not on this list. Whales No, Yeah, I'm gonna it's we
- 1:20:57are the boy band from the movie you read whose name is sub eluding me.
- 1:21:00But they also play in Toronto one two three four. Do you know
- 1:21:03what I'm gonna I'm gonna be cruel and say no because the film is turning
- 1:21:06Red, turning red, not red, oh turning red again? Full Star
- 1:21:14Town, Oh right, full star colloquially called h Yeah, okay, we'll
- 1:21:20see how these go. I'm enjoying describing them though, so it is really
- 1:21:26fun. So next up, these old British rockers appear to Yes, John,
- 1:21:32we are Spinal Tap one two three four beautiful, it is John.
- 1:21:41I was right behind you on that one. I was taking away, what
- 1:21:44is this? My only my onliest service might be the Ruddles. I was
- 1:21:46waiting to make sure. Oh yeah. So next up we have an eco
- 1:21:54goth rock trio formed in the late nineties but have enjoyed success in the world.
- 1:22:00Yes, Drue, we are the really hot witch band from the Scooby
- 1:22:03Doos movie. I camera which one exactly? You said, Scooby doo it's
- 1:22:09Hex Girls. Yes, yes, I thought of that too. I thought,
- 1:22:14all right, all right, let's go. Yeah, good, because
- 1:22:23we got like nine molcles. Let's go. So next up, pioneers of
- 1:22:29the Felt sound. They've been going since the Sex Yes, true, I
- 1:22:35think the actual name of the bands and the color but one we are the
- 1:22:38band from the Muppets that features Animal and Doctor Teeth one two three four.
- 1:22:42Yeah, you said enough that If you have just said the band from the
- 1:22:44Muppets, I might have been like, what I know the members. It's
- 1:22:48Doctor Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. Oh yes, oh this is this is
- 1:22:53one of those names. But good stuff. Next one. So next up,
- 1:23:00the story goes they met and formed the band while in detention. But
- 1:23:04I don't think you'd want this drink at your breakfast club. You can write
- 1:23:09them off as another Disney Channel band. Whales, Yes, oldre we are
- 1:23:14Lemonade Mouth. It is lemonade? Yes? Is that from breakfast club?
- 1:23:19Or it's not? That was just meant to be, like, you wouldn't
- 1:23:23drink lemonade at breakfast or not at my breakfast? What is that from?
- 1:23:28Then it's called Lemonade Mouth. It's just a Disney Channel movie. Oh,
- 1:23:31it's just okay, it's its own property. Okay, wow, yeah,
- 1:23:36totally one. No, I'm with you, Drew. I think let's get
- 1:23:41let's get to the bottom of this. Yeah. I meant that one.
- 1:23:44We might be old. The film came out in twenty eleven. We're all
- 1:23:49old. So next up, they're an eight piece, but even more than
- 1:23:56that if you include the whole class, not the most prominent whale. Yes,
- 1:24:01Jason, Yes, we are School of Rock two. Yep. It's
- 1:24:08School of Rock from School of Rock, Oh God. Next up, arguably
- 1:24:12the blueprint for these teen rock outfits. They formed in nineteen seventy with an
- 1:24:17all feline, sorry, all female lineup World Yes, dree we are Josie
- 1:24:24and the Pussycats one, two three four It is Josie and the Pussycats.
- 1:24:28Good job, Yeah, nice slip up there rewatched that one recently, So
- 1:24:35next up, eighties Irish five piece influenced by the Cure I'm getting some Early
- 1:24:42U two meets mid Duran, Duran meets late Holland oates Vibes, fronted by
- 1:24:46some kid in Catholic school he hates Yes, oldra got a kid tikt oh
- 1:24:56fuck? What is it called? Sing Street Song Street? We are the
- 1:25:01Singstreet. We are we are sing Street? What two three four? Yes?
- 1:25:06Nice? So next up a surprisingly good hip hop quartet, authentically local
- 1:25:14and flat out good, like you'd pay to see them in real life.
- 1:25:16Good, and if their songs are true, they get into fights with a
- 1:25:20listers like Keanu Reeves. Oh well wait, yes, Jason, we are
- 1:25:28always be my baby band from Yeah Yeah, It's it's Hello Peril from all
- 1:25:36as soon as damn No good call, I haven't heard of any of these.
- 1:25:43That was a really good movie. Yeah, I love that. A
- 1:25:46new movie to watch, Sean, Oh yeah, dude, it's great.
- 1:25:49Next up, mostly Woodwind Quintet, but they're known to use a little percussion.
- 1:25:55These guys are far far away from what you'd musically expect from people with
- 1:26:00deep clefts in their skulls. But that's jazz for you. Yes, we
- 1:26:04are the Cantina Band. As soon as he said the word and you cut
- 1:26:13him off, I was like, fuck, oh good stuff. Do anyone
- 1:26:15know the real name of the Cantina Band. I'm sure I've known at some
- 1:26:18point, but not about my head. No, I know I've heard it.
- 1:26:20But now it's Figurin Dan and the Modal Nodes playing their classic jiz music
- 1:26:29of that jizz Okay. So next up they are pioneers of the late two
- 1:26:35thousand's Indiana outdoor concert revival scene. Their subject matter is mostly time Whale.
- 1:26:43Yes, Jason, we are mouse Rat one, two, three, four,
- 1:26:46it's mouse Rat wow okay and quick before the buzza. So finally on
- 1:26:56this list, we have a Montreal post punk indie fusion trio world. Yeah,
- 1:27:03we are the Clash and team ahead one, two, three, four,
- 1:27:06He didn't fall for the trick. That's the v my Montreal queen.
- 1:27:13Oh goodness, Wow, we started out rough, but then we hit our
- 1:27:16strategy. Yeah, I think the crushed that, right. I think there's
- 1:27:20also the issue whenever I think I had this issue with every quick Fire round
- 1:27:25is I come up with like one or two that I know we're gonna be
- 1:27:27there, and then they're not there, and I'm shocked, and it like
- 1:27:30thanks me, which we're gone? Which ones? H And again I luckily
- 1:27:32you said franchises because I couldn't remember the name of Charlie's band from Lost Shaft.
- 1:27:39Yeah, I had the CD, the boot leg CD that got sold
- 1:27:43around. Yeah, I think going in like I had spinal tap and I
- 1:27:46figured that would show up. But I was also thinking like folksmen and main
- 1:27:49street singers from Mighty Wind, and then like, what was it like still
- 1:27:54Water or something from Almost Famous Almost did still Water? Apparently there is also
- 1:28:00a real still Water the fakes still Water are based on, and so I
- 1:28:03didn't want it. It kind of didn't fully meet the criteria. I think
- 1:28:06there's a similar thing with Oh Brother, where art thou the saggy Bottom Boys.
- 1:28:12Yeah, I did see that there is also, for some reason,
- 1:28:15also wanted to do the the other boy band from Josie and the Pussycats,
- 1:28:20the one from the beginning of the movie who's singing Backdoor Lover. It's a
- 1:28:27it's I think it's Donald Faison from Scrubs and freaking what's his name? The
- 1:28:33Austin Power Movies Green. I need to see that movie. It's one that
- 1:28:39like, Oh, it's it's such a dumb but fun movie. Yeah,
- 1:28:41it's one that I keep seeing, like, I guess because it's got famous
- 1:28:45actors in so I keep seeing on people's lists and stuff of being like,
- 1:28:47oh, they did a live action Josie and the Pussycats movie. That must
- 1:28:50be insane. Hell yeah. Oh and by the way, if there's ever
- 1:28:55a gate Levers spinal tap episode, I am so in. They're also they're
- 1:29:00also finally making an official sequel. Yes, I heard this on a podcast.
- 1:29:06Yes, is directing Everyone's coming back. It's gonna them as aged rock
- 1:29:14stars. Is going to be very funny. I think I need to rewatch
- 1:29:16before then. It's been way too long. I saw that movie way too
- 1:29:19Oh my goodness, I love that movie so much. Yeah, Seth Green
- 1:29:24was the name I was looking for. I couldn't think of Seth Green.
- 1:29:26Yes, not literally a green person. I don't know. He could be
- 1:29:32eco conscious. I mean Oz is pretty eco conscious and Buffy that's straight,
- 1:29:38that's true. Okay. Before we get to the final scores, I'd like
- 1:29:41to thank our players. You've all rocked and realized that you were the cause
- 1:29:45of most of your anks the whole time. I knew that from the start

- 1:32:20your relationship politics, you can just commission another version of this podcast that reflects
- 1:32:25your current views. Okay, let's get to the final scores. Oh nervous,
- 1:32:33it was close. It was definitely close. We have Subspace Whale Highway
- 1:32:40making a great comeback in the third round, staying strong in the final quick
- 1:32:44fire round and finishing on twenty points. Okay, and the World boy finish
- 1:32:53on eighteen points. So S Whale Highway are our winners. Defeated the entire
- 1:33:01world pilgrim versus the world. We are Scott Pilgrim. I mean, have
- 1:33:11we unleashed something? You hear this is old and Jason on the power of
- 1:33:15two captains put together. Uh huh. It was a foregone conclusion. This
- 1:33:20is why we're not on the same teams. This is why I was hoping
- 1:33:25at the beginning that you guys were going to make Matt mad. So you
- 1:33:30get zero points. Yeah, you didn't really poke. Listen, listen.
- 1:33:38What what happened was you forgot to do your voice callback and you forgot to
- 1:33:45do your no. I did a couple of times. I don't want to
- 1:33:49overdo it. Chris Evans, Chris, I put Chris Evans out of a
- 1:33:55job. You know you weren't going full Chris Evans. The whole episode ruin
- 1:34:01throat at that point. If he goes too far, we can't get him
- 1:34:05back. He's just like that for a This is where Chris Evans merits or
- 1:34:14Lucas Lucas Lee only answers to Lucas Lee. And if you'd remember to do
- 1:34:19that, like sort of every ten minutes, it would have really annoyed me,
- 1:34:21and I would have taken points off himself. It's a good job worked
- 1:34:27out for I gotta break that one thousand points. I gotta I gotta keep
- 1:34:30my I don't even know if I'm there yet. We have been gaate Leapers,
- 1:34:35thank you so much for listening. Subscribe to this feed for more geeky

- 1:34:48please share this episode with a friend, your bandmates, that girl with brightly
- 1:34:53colored hair, you've got a crush on, anyone at all. Really,
- 1:34:57we'll be back next time when we'll be letting off some steam. But until
- 1:35:00then, I leave you with this heartwarming quote from Brian le O'Malley. Maybe
- 1:35:04it's important to open up to the people who are right there with you,
- 1:35:08not some thousand miles away in another universe. Or maybe it's something else.
- 1:35:13Maybe I should just settle for not knowing. But on gate Leapers, we
- 1:35:15love our people who are thousands of miles away, and you do kind of
- 1:35:18need to know a lot of stuff. So yeah, goodbye.
