- 0:02Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of two shot
- 0:05Tuesday. Barry Nixon along with the one
- 0:07and only Jason Riley. And of course, one of our
- 0:10favorites of all time, Rob Peets, the movie guy.
- 0:13He's back to discuss not one but two movies.
- 0:16And we're going to get into wow back rooms and the newest
- 0:20offering from Steven Spielberg, Disclosure Day, Rob.
- 0:23A little indie director? Yep, yeah.
- 0:27Spielberg OK, got it. Yeah.
- 0:29Yeah, never. Yeah, he's fairly new, Fairly
- 0:32new. But we'll, you know, we'll see.
- 0:33We'll see. Yeah.
- 0:34OK. Well, what do you say we kick us
- 0:37off, Jay with the shots for the evening?
- 0:40Why don't you get us going there?
- 0:41Yeah, I have got in honor of two movies, I've put 2 great things
- 0:45together, kool-aid and water together in one glass.
- 0:49Orange flavored Barry, what have you got?
- 0:51Well, I'm actually having some alcohol tonight, Jay, so I'm
- 0:54going with the Bushmills. 12 year.
- 0:57Nice. Yeah, Robert.
- 1:00Yeah, I'm drinking glass of just pure, unadulterated.
- 1:03It's vodka. Nice.
- 1:04It's just pure vodka. It's all it's going down.
- 1:07I love it. I like that Mad Men style glass
- 1:10as well. Or Tumblr.
- 1:10That's a that's a good looking Tumblr right there.
- 1:12That's a Tumblr. Cheers.
- 1:14Cheers, Chin. Chin.
- 1:17Mercy. All right, let's start with
- 1:20Backrooms, Rob. This was one we saw at the time
- 1:22of this recording probably 2 or so weeks ago, but we saw it
- 1:25because it was getting getting great reviews.
- 1:27People were talking about it. A phenomenon.
- 1:30You might. It wasn't a bit of a phenomenon.
- 1:32Yeah. Rob, you, you know a little bit
- 1:33more about the background of this person who kind of came out
- 1:35of nowhere and then suddenly a 24 gave him a motion picture of
- 1:39his own. So why do you take it from
- 1:40there? Yeah, it's a guy named Kane
- 1:42Parsons who went on on YouTube. He's named Kane Pixels.
- 1:46So he's a, he was like a 16 year old guy who was, you know,
- 1:49interested in, in using Blender to create 3D places and stuff.
- 1:54And I think he was kind of like inspired by reading about this
- 1:57lore of the backrooms in, in places like 4 Chan and corners
- 2:00of the Internet where, you know, things happen, people talk about
- 2:03weird stuff. Creepypastas come to be.
- 2:06Yes, exactly. Creepypastas happen, Yeah.
- 2:10No, Jay, never say that cat. Yeah, you're, you're a, you're a
- 2:14boomer for, for love, love. Yeah, Boomer for love.
- 2:17OK, so backrooms 3D art. What?
- 2:20No, Yeah. So he basically just was
- 2:22inspired by this kind of like Internet based lore about these
- 2:25like office spaces that are empty but they just keep going
- 2:29forever. Like you basically like you
- 2:31would, you would kind of walk through your wall and end up in
- 2:35this whole place. You'd fall into your wall or
- 2:37fall through when that. Happens.
- 2:38Yeah, at the office that would happen.
- 2:40You're. Basically it's called no
- 2:41clipping. It's it's like in the old the
- 2:43old video games, you would you could no clip yourself through
- 2:45walls. So it's kind of what that is.
- 2:47OK. And yeah, So what we're learning
- 2:49today, we're learning. I'm gonna go.
- 2:50I've never heard of no clipping, but I'm gonna.
- 2:52Go a little slower. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:54Please do. Yeah, so basically it works.
- 2:58Yeah, but yeah. There's this isn't really a game
- 3:00thing, it's just lore and it includes game like stuff in it.
- 3:03But anyway, the idea is he ended up it's general lore.
- 3:07Yeah, OK, got it. There's nothing really in the
- 3:09backrooms except for the rooms themselves, unless you explore
- 3:12there might be. Now video games have been made
- 3:14of the backrooms in which they put creatures in.
- 3:16But Kane Pixels or Kane Parsons, what he ended up doing at 1617
- 3:21years old was creating these incredibly realistic looking 3D
- 3:25environments and then attaching almost like a like a old
- 3:28fashioned video camera to the, to the camera section.
- 3:31So it looks like it's first person perspective.
- 3:33It actually looks like you're in these real, like they look,
- 3:36everything looks real in the movie.
- 3:37So it kind of in, in his short movies that he did for YouTube.
- 3:41Got it. OK.
- 3:41And this is as a as a teenager and he, he was just killing it
- 3:44and making these amazing, cool videos.
- 3:46And I think AA24 saw that and they, they were quite popular.
- 3:50I'd watch them ages ago. I thought they were great.
- 3:52And I was like, this guy should be doing other things.
- 3:54But so they gave him a a deal. You just make a backroom's movie
- 3:57fly toys. Yeah, it's all Yeah, it's all.
- 3:59Yeah. So he did a movie based on that,
- 4:02and they actually built sets this time.
- 4:04It wasn't all CG. It was all real sets and.
- 4:07You said it was a 30,000 square foot set, in fact, and
- 4:10apparently some of the actors did become lost at points during
- 4:14the shooting because it was just such a massive real set.
- 4:16Like Rob said, 30,000 square foot.
- 4:19So that's pretty big. Nice.
- 4:20Yeah. And it's it's kind of a
- 4:21oppressive because you're in this place.
- 4:23It just never ends. But anyways, it's a fascinating
- 4:25sort of like Internet lore thing that that has become an
- 4:28interesting movie. And the movie doesn't you know,
- 4:30you think, what are you going to do with that movie except for
- 4:32walk around the back rooms and kind of be surprised when things
- 4:35are around the potentially around the corner?
- 4:37Well, they ended up adding a story to it and giving, giving
- 4:40it a little bit of AI would say like the, the main theme is, is
- 4:43sort of not being able to let go of, of trauma that's happened to
- 4:48you and how that translates. So basically the, the, the, the
- 4:51main guy in the movie is I believe his wife has left him
- 4:54and all that. So he kind of runs this
- 4:56furniture store on his own and it's, he's not really happy
- 4:59where he is. He thinks he's OK, but he's
- 5:01actually not. And the backrooms kind of
- 5:03reflect that. He falls and he clips into the
- 5:05back rooms through the basement of of his furniture shop.
- 5:08Does he go to the backroom to get stock for somebody?
- 5:11Like is there a reason for him to go?
- 5:12I'll be in the back and he goes to get like a a lamp.
- 5:15So it's not the actual, not even OK of the office.
- 5:18You wish you it was. It would be so much easier to
- 5:21follow Jay if it were like that. Just one more thing.
- 5:24This furniture store is like a bad boy furniture.
- 5:26OK, this is the discount furniture shop.
- 5:29This isn't some place you go in and you you're looking at an
- 5:31armoire and someone's offering you some champagne.
- 5:34No, it's not like that at all. It's like everything is slashed.
- 5:37This is 50% off. That's 70% off.
- 5:40And it's in the back. That's what I would think I
- 5:41would go to. The there's.
- 5:42Things in the back. It's in the basement.
- 5:44It's in the basement. In the basement.
- 5:46He flips through the wall in the basement.
- 5:48Yeah. And, and and he just discovers
- 5:50this whole area and kind of is able to report that to he.
- 5:53He talks to someone, I guess his therapist basically tries to
- 5:55convince her it's a real thing. You know, she doesn't really
- 5:58believe my guest type thing. And it kind of the movie
- 5:59develops from there. It's a, it's a cool, very
- 6:02interesting kind of psychological thing with
- 6:05somebody horror stuff that happens as well.
- 6:07So for sure, if you like that kind of stuff, it's it's
- 6:09definitely worth checking into for sure.
- 6:11Barry, what do you think? Cuz I want to make sure we get
- 6:13to our second movie as well. So I want to hear your take on
- 6:16back rooms. Yeah, I thought it was
- 6:18interesting. Unlike Rob, I had no context for
- 6:21this at all, Jay, other than what Rob had told me.
- 6:23I wasn't familiar with this kid. I didn't know anything about it.
- 6:26So I just kind of went in naked and I was happy that I did.
- 6:30Yeah, I, I did them to wear clothing.
- 6:32Yeah, I asked them. It was freezing in there, man.
- 6:34Yeah. We, we sat on these seats that
- 6:36were right below the air conditioning.
- 6:37So we were. Oh.
- 6:37Yeah, it was a frightened turtle up front, but then, OK, doesn't
- 6:40the nip. Sore out on that?
- 6:42Point of it. Oh, they were glad.
- 6:43Cutting glass, Jay. OK.
- 6:44All right. So at some point now, did they
- 6:48go in a backroom? I'm a little confused about
- 6:50that. There was an actual like did
- 6:51they go put through a curtain or through?
- 6:53Was it like a closing door? I think.
- 6:54I think you're thinking when you're thinking backrooms.
- 6:56I think you're thinking of the backroom of a building.
- 6:58That's not what this is. What is it the?
- 7:00Backroom of an old video rental place where they keep the pornos
- 7:05you know behind the curtain you're.
- 7:06Big. You're big on the pornos today.
- 7:09Yeah. I'm fixated.
- 7:10Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, this, this is about
- 7:13literally disappearing through a wall and reappearing on the
- 7:17other side in a a series of connected corridors and rooms
- 7:21that look like an empty office space or an office space that
- 7:24has furniture in it. But the furniture could be stuck
- 7:27to the wall. It can be on an angle in the
- 7:29floor. It's all a.
- 7:30Big pile in the middle of the room.
- 7:32Backrooms, why didn't you say so?
- 7:34Now I. I thought I did.
- 7:36Maybe I'm am I, I'm I don't know.
- 7:39I let's guess I need to work on on mine English.
- 7:43Yeah, this thing is this thing's a hit.
- 7:45Let's get a star rating for both of you, Rob.
- 7:47Star rating on Backrooms. I'm doing it, I'm giving it a
- 7:50I'm, I'm going 4 out of five. I really enjoyed it.
- 7:52I think there's a lot of potential for for this guy, for
- 7:55this young guy to make better movies.
- 7:57And it was a good movie, so. Yeah, Barry.
- 7:59I would agree. Four out of five, I enjoyed it.
- 8:02It was a little more thinking that I typically like to do in a
- 8:05movie because it, by the end of it, I wasn't entirely sure what
- 8:07I saw. But what I did see was
- 8:09interesting. And there was some genuine
- 8:11scares, including. I don't want to give it away,
- 8:14but there's this one sequence where you you get Vertigo in the
- 8:17theater. It's just really wild.
- 8:19But all the while that you're worried about falling over, you
- 8:22got something chasing you on top of that.
- 8:25So that was that got the heart going.
- 8:27Yeah. That's frustrating when that
- 8:29happens. It's a whole yeah.
- 8:30So it's terrible. It's terrible.
- 8:31OK, all right, back rooms, go see it.
- 8:34Probably have already. It's been out for a little
- 8:36while. Check it out.
- 8:37It's great. Let's do shot #2 and then we're
- 8:40going to move on to our double, our second movie of our double
- 8:42feature that I haven't seen. It's always rewarding for me.
- 8:45Yeah. All right, Rob, what have you
- 8:48got for shot #2 to start us off? Well, I'm going back to what I
- 8:52said was vodka, but it's really just water.
- 8:54I'm, I'm a, I'm a wimp when it comes to this stuff these days.
- 8:56So it's I'm just drinking water. All right.
- 8:58Attaboy, Barry. I'm doing the opposite of being
- 9:02a wimp today. I'm going full in with the booze
- 9:04and so that the J or the yeah, Bushmills.
- 9:08I almost got it wrong. Bushmills 12 year.
- 9:10All right. And I've got the lemon squeezy,
- 9:13not lemon squeezy, the Kool-aid orange drink squeezy with ice.
- 9:17Here's to you guys. Chin, chin so watery.
- 9:21So the next movie we saw, Disclosure Day, the latest from
- 9:25newcomer Steven Spielberg. And I had said to Rob on the
- 9:28walk over, I had read somewhere that people were saying this is
- 9:31his best work ever. I said that to Rob.
- 9:34I didn't even get the full sentence.
- 9:35Out he goes. Hello, Opie.
- 9:37It's not really his best work. He can't be.
- 9:39It's like he's been around too long.
- 9:40He's got a ton of great work. Yeah.
- 9:42This might be one of the ones that this might be.
- 9:45I don't really, you know what I'm going to wait for Rob to to
- 9:47to say. But where does this sit among
- 9:50his sci-fi movies? Well, that's because this is
- 9:53very different than any of the other stuff that he's done.
- 9:55But Rob, take it away. Yeah, it's kind of a mix of it
- 9:58has elements of ET in it. Remember, you know, sort of like
- 10:01the, the sort of like the the unknown FBI type people that are
- 10:05chasing the, the kids and all that stuff.
- 10:07It has that element in it. But you actually kind of dive a
- 10:09little bit more into that and who those guys might be.
- 10:13Yeah. As well as a.
- 10:14Bit of like. Sorry, encounters.
- 10:16Ed Snowden. There's like an Ed Snowden kind
- 10:18of character that does like a yeah, stealing a bunch of files.
- 10:22He wants to release them to the general public.
- 10:24And there's a couple different stories going on in this.
- 10:26Yeah, and it did. It definitely reminded me a bit
- 10:28of close Encounters as well with the sort of the objective of the
- 10:31movie and I, I probably don't want to give away too much.
- 10:34There is definitely stuff to spoil, especially as you get
- 10:37closer to the end, but it's basically a guy, the Snowden
- 10:40type character who is working for a company and he has all
- 10:43these secrets and the secrets are basically a complete
- 10:46absolute evidence and proof of, of alien life having been around
- 10:50for about 50-60 years on Earth. And, and he he has teamed up
- 10:55with someone else who has gone rogue and they are planning to
- 10:59release that information, hence disclosure day.
- 11:01And then other things happen. Emily Blunt's character comes in
- 11:04and she she's a reporter that works in San Francisco, like a
- 11:07weather reporter, and she kind of gets pulled into it without
- 11:11knowing it that she's going to. She kind of has AI.
- 11:13Don't really want to spoil it too much because it's such a new
- 11:16movie, but yeah, there's there's like a.
- 11:18Visitor A Yeah, there's a visitor comes to to see her.
- 11:22And then after that everything changes for her, including she
- 11:26suddenly is able to speak Russian.
- 11:27So that's one thing. It was kind of nice.
- 11:30Yeah, she's able to dive into your history.
- 11:31She knows exactly like she can kind of look at you and
- 11:34understand who you are and she'll like say, look, you know,
- 11:37you might want to, you know, maybe tonight's the night you
- 11:39put out the garbage because you haven't done it in a while and
- 11:41you're, you know, you're, you're whatever your your, your husband
- 11:44or your whatever is not going to be happy about that.
- 11:45So just she's able to like tune into the moment with a person
- 11:49and kind of like in Russian, pull them apart.
- 11:51Not well. Maybe in.
- 11:52One of her skills? Probably.
- 11:54In Russia. OK, maybe in Russian.
- 11:56Yeah, yeah, if she was in Russia.
- 11:58Is this if you can say, is this like a we've discovered aliens
- 12:02have crashed here? Or is it like we've discovered
- 12:04aliens are living among us here? It's a crash thing.
- 12:08It's Roswell. They're not all the it's all the
- 12:11history we kind of know and we've seen, but they've added
- 12:14hooks into what if that was all real kind of thing.
- 12:17Yeah, what if it including like some pretty good looking video
- 12:20that looks like it was shot back in the day of like, you know,
- 12:24the Roswell crash and them working to retrieve the alien
- 12:28occupants. And you gotta get to see that.
- 12:30And it's it's good. But then also like towards the
- 12:32end of it, you're seeing some images that are pretty
- 12:34disturbing too. Like Rob, I think you've got a
- 12:36little, you got a. Bit Misty there.
- 12:38Yeah. Because it was.
- 12:39It was. It was kind of beautifully
- 12:40handled. Yeah, it was, yeah.
- 12:42I mean, when you think about the, you know, when, when you
- 12:45know the context of why you're seeing this stuff and you
- 12:47realize that, see, I don't want to give it away, but when you
- 12:50realize the context, it, it ends up being kind of sad in a way.
- 12:54It's not, it's not a good thing. It's kind of a it's a bad thing.
- 12:57What, what we've kind of done, right.
- 12:58So in in this fictional version of of Earth.
- 13:01Right. Yeah, maybe totally full aliens,
- 13:04who knows. I don't want to guess.
- 13:06You want to like ET like little ETS.
- 13:09Maybe not. Quite full aliens, but.
- 13:11Yeah, maybe not quite there, but like maybe like close Encounter
- 13:14style aliens or yeah. They're not.
- 13:16They're not trying to annihilate.
- 13:17It's not like Mars Attacks where they are clearly just trying to
- 13:20vaporize all in human life. It's not like that.
- 13:23There is another element too. That's kind of cool.
- 13:25Yeah. There's another element too,
- 13:27where there's like some psychic phenomenon where one of the
- 13:30characters that is trying to chase down this rogue as well as
- 13:34the Ed Stone character, because you know, obviously there's a
- 13:36faction that doesn't want this information ever to see the
- 13:38light of day. So this guy is has the ability
- 13:41then to just drop in. They call it drop it.
- 13:43Is it dropping in or dive in, dive in on somebody's mind.
- 13:48And so he's able to kind of like, appear in people's minds
- 13:51and like, try to manipulate even their, like, hand gestures and
- 13:54all kinds. Of stuff, stuff he has to.
- 13:56He has to but. It's very draining for him.
- 13:58And he has to have an alien object in in his hand to do
- 14:01that. And those those objects play a
- 14:03larger part in the grand story once you get there, but you
- 14:06don't know what they are originally.
- 14:08You just know that it's an alien object and he it's who who
- 14:11played that guy again, It was the the, the.
- 14:13Yeah, it's Colin 1st, and there were a couple times, it was more
- 14:15than once that Rob wanted to see the guy's head get exploded.
- 14:19You're like explode that guy's head because he's just not a
- 14:21good guy at all. He's like an absolute scumbag
- 14:24and you want this guy to have his head blown out?
- 14:27Does he? I don't know.
- 14:28You gotta go see the movie. Yeah, you gotta see the.
- 14:30Movie Was this movie based on a book or is it an original story
- 14:33by Steven Spielberg or somebody? That original David Kappen and
- 14:37and and Spielberg, Yeah. OK, very cool.
- 14:40And they, they've done a lot of great, they've done a lot of
- 14:42great movies together. So, you know, they they've done
- 14:44some good scripts. Where would you put this Rob on
- 14:46the and then I'll go to Barry for this on the kind of Barry
- 14:49was asking him in like how it ranks and Steven Spielberg's
- 14:52sci-fi movies. I'll even expand that to just
- 14:54Steven Spielberg films. Where would you put this?
- 14:57Yeah, it's, it's not going to be up at the top.
- 14:59It's mid mid mid pack. But not bottom like not one of
- 15:02the lower ones sometimes. They.
- 15:04Trend down there, definitely not bottom as they get older.
- 15:07Barry, how about yourself? Well, in terms of the, you know,
- 15:10where does it sit in his whole catalog?
- 15:12I agree with Rob. It's definitely not the top.
- 15:14I don't know who wrote it's. This is Spielberg's best work.
- 15:18I don't know. I mean, that person maybe has
- 15:20never seen a Spielberg movie. Maybe this is the first one.
- 15:23So I don't know, I mean, it looks, it looks great.
- 15:25It looks like a Spielberg movie. It's definitely very incredibly
- 15:29competent. It looks amazing.
- 15:30Oh, and also John Williams came out of retirement to score that.
- 15:34And I, I noticed it that that's absolutely John Williams.
- 15:37I'm like, I didn't know he did. He did the score for this.
- 15:39So that that that was cool. So the score was great.
- 15:42Everything was like what you would expect a modern version of
- 15:45a Steven Spielberg flick. It just didn't seem to have the
- 15:48kind of depth that, you know, even close Encounters had or
- 15:50something like that where you're, you're on a journey.
- 15:53This is definitely a journey. This is like a chase movie kind
- 15:55of thing, but I just don't think it had quite.
- 15:59And the ending was maybe a little divisive.
- 16:02I I didn't mind it. I understand the message, but
- 16:04I'm not going to say what the message is.
- 16:06But there's a message at the end and it it's an important
- 16:08message, but don't understand why people.
- 16:10Yes, that's exactly what happens.
- 16:12Yeah, it's a big sign they'll do this.
- 16:13Everyone, all the entire cast break, break from like the
- 16:16roles, and they just put up a thing and don't litter.
- 16:19And that's litter. Yeah, put the litter.
- 16:21In its place. And hate, yeah, that kind of
- 16:25stuff. I recently, I recently saw
- 16:27Steven Spielberg directing. Yeah, he directed the first ever
- 16:30episode of the regular Colombo series.
- 16:32So I own that on DVD and it was really well done really.
- 16:35You could see, you could see brilliances of Steven Spielberg
- 16:38as he was very young and he had cut his break, but you could
- 16:40just see some cool stuff. So yeah, he did.
- 16:42This first. I wonder if that was.
- 16:44I wonder if it was after or before.
- 16:46Before Jaws, No. Dual.
- 16:48Dual Dual was the dual was his first movie which was ATV movie.
- 16:51It was about a car that just truck that just relentlessly
- 16:54chases. Well, this was 1960. 9 I think
- 16:56he did this Columbia, OK. Right.
- 16:58This was this was before dual, yeah.
- 16:59OK, it's. Probably why he got dual.
- 17:02It's probably yeah. And then he did Jaws just what
- 17:04he was after that. OK, let's get star rating on
- 17:07this one. Let's start with you, Barry.
- 17:08I want to hear your star rating on this.
- 17:10Yeah, I enjoyed it at the runtime, though was a little
- 17:14bloated at 2:30. Yeah.
- 17:17So I feel like it maybe could have done a little bit more time
- 17:20in the editing room, maybe 10 minutes.
- 17:21I don't know. I don't know.
- 17:23And I can't really off the top of my head tell you where those
- 17:25trimmings should have taken place because I'm not an editor.
- 17:28But what I can tell you is it probably as an audience member,
- 17:32it could have been a little tighter perhaps, but you know,
- 17:35whatever, 33.5 out of five, it's worth looking at.
- 17:38It's it's not a bad movie. And like Rob said, it is
- 17:41beautifully shot. It does have some humor as well
- 17:43that's in there. Wyatt Russell Kurt Russell, His
- 17:46son is in it, so he provides a little of a Comic Relief.
- 17:49Nice. You know, and not all the jokes
- 17:52land, but it's but none like Spielberg isn't known for that.
- 17:55Like he will put humor in a movie, but not everything is
- 17:58going to be a bullseye. Yeah, so.
- 18:02Well, I would say the ad, they could have just edited out the
- 18:04don't litter part at the end. That would have been a good
- 18:06solid because that was that was 10 minutes of the movie.
- 18:08That was insane. Yeah.
- 18:10It was a bit much. Probably just get rid of that
- 18:12and I'm going to go with 3.5 as well.
- 18:15That's exactly what I thought about 70%.
- 18:17It was, you know, above average film, a good Spielberg film, but
- 18:21not as best by any stretch. It's worth watching.
- 18:24I mean, it's worth seeing and I think there's a good message in
- 18:27it, whether or not it pertains to anything to do with today's
- 18:30reality. It's a whole different ball game
- 18:32and a whole different story so. OK I love it when you 2 sync up
- 18:35on both movies. So backroom.
- 18:37This is a rarity. I got to say, this is pretty
- 18:40rare. Yeah, exactly.
- 18:42The back rooms, plural and disclosure Day.
- 18:46Check them out if you haven't heard of them.
- 18:48I don't know what planet you're living on, but check them out.
- 18:51Rob, always a pleasure to see you.
- 18:53You're going to be back here in just a few weeks, I believe, to
- 18:56talk about Supergirl, so stay tuned for that.
- 18:59We're looking forward to that. And Barry, always a pleasure to
- 19:02see you and your World Cup beer Stein that you've got there.
- 19:07You can drink us a trophy. Yeah, drink us out, Barry, Drink
- 19:10us out. I'll be happy to all.
- 19:13Right, bye everyone. See you.
