Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It's head to Turkey and NATO's summit taking place there.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Trump telling the Europeans, you need me more than I
- 0:06Speaker 1: need you.
- 0:07Speaker 2: We did something in Iran. We don't need anybody's help.
- 0:11Speaker 2: I didn't even want their help. But before I asked,
- 0:14Speaker 2: they said they wouldn't be there, And in a way,
- 0:16Speaker 2: I was testing people. I was testing to see whether
- 0:19Speaker 2: or not they'd be there, because as long said that,
- 0:21Speaker 2: we help them, but I'm not sure that they'd be
- 0:23Speaker 2: there for us.
- 0:24Speaker 1: All right, let's go to Ruth Michaelson, who is a
- 0:27Speaker 1: Turkey based journalist for The Guardian at the summit with us.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Nice to have you on the program. Ruth, how's the
- 0:33Speaker 1: reaction been so far on what Trump's been saying?
- 0:38Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I think it's probably fair to say
- 0:41Speaker 3: that a lot of this summit is that the mood
- 0:44Speaker 3: is very much it's about keeping going with Trump happy
- 0:48Speaker 3: one way or another, whether it's the very very warm
- 0:51Speaker 3: welcome that he received from the Turkish president reget type
- 0:54Speaker 3: ed one. You know all the statements we've heard coming
- 0:59Speaker 3: from the Native Secretary General Mark Rutter about his sort
- 1:03Speaker 3: of excitement to show Trump the progress towards three point
- 1:08Speaker 3: five percent GDP on defense spending for NATO members, that
- 1:13Speaker 3: progress that he wants to show Trump since the last summit, obviously,
- 1:17Speaker 3: as we're starting to see some reactions from Trump's rather
- 1:22Speaker 3: well from some of the statements that we had from
- 1:24Speaker 3: Donald Trump when he was sitting next to Erduin at
- 1:26Speaker 3: a press conference where he began talking about Greenland and
- 1:30Speaker 3: his desire to take control of Freeland. Again, some statements
- 1:35Speaker 3: from the Danish leadership basically objecting to what Trump was saying,
- 1:43Speaker 3: asking that allies respect Danish sovereignty, saying that Greenland does
- 1:47Speaker 3: not for sale. But in terms of the rather warm
- 1:51Speaker 3: statements that Trump has made about Dulin and his compared
- 1:56Speaker 3: to as rather cold statements about NATA as a whole,
- 1:58Speaker 3: I think a lot of the world leaders who are
- 2:02Speaker 3: here at the summit have rather.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Christ some of this in and some of the sentiment
- 2:09Speaker 1: is it going to be backed up by action? In
- 2:10Speaker 1: other words, is Trump going to sell fire digits to Turkey?
- 2:14Speaker 1: That's what someone was riding in the Times this morning
- 2:16Speaker 1: reporting that he's going to do. Is it true?
- 2:21Speaker 3: Well, he said during this press conference that he would
- 2:25Speaker 3: consider selling the S thirty five to Turkey, but that
- 2:28Speaker 3: was also couched within a lot of very warm promises
- 2:32Speaker 3: on also saying we don't think that from the Turkish
- 2:35Speaker 3: point of view, they don't think that this is going
- 2:36Speaker 3: to be an issue. So Trump certainly did everything that
- 2:41Speaker 3: he could in public to say that he would move
- 2:46Speaker 3: to have sanctions that have been in place on Turkey
- 2:49Speaker 3: since twenty twenty. This is for Turkey's purchase of a
- 2:52Speaker 3: Russian the cule system that is, from the US perspective,
- 2:57Speaker 3: incompatible with obtaining a plane like the thirty five. Trump
- 3:03Speaker 3: has said that he will, despite the objections of Congress,
- 3:05Speaker 3: he will work to have those sanctions lifted. So certainly
- 3:08Speaker 3: everything that he said would indicate that that he wants
- 3:11Speaker 3: that sale to go ahead. Whether Congress and Washington will
- 3:14Speaker 3: allow that is really another question.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Ruth Michaelson that is our journalist at NATO in Turkey
