- 0:25Welcome to Kick Ass Daily, where we bring news, trivia, fun
- 0:29facts, and more just for curious kids like you.
- 0:32Today we're going on a high altitude adventure to explore
- 0:36some of the largest mountain ranges around the world.
- 0:39Get ready to learn about gigantic chains of mountains,
- 0:42how they formed, and why they're so important for our planet and
- 0:45for people. Let's start by understanding
- 0:47what a mountain range is. A mountain range is a group of
- 0:51mountains that are connected together, usually stretching
- 0:54over hundreds or even thousands of kilometers.
- 0:57These aren't just single mountains standing alone,
- 0:59they're long lines or clusters of mountains that can be seen
- 1:02from space. Mountain ranges are formed by
- 1:05powerful natural forces deep inside the Earth, mostly when
- 1:09huge pieces of the Earth's crust, called tectonic plates,
- 1:12crash into each other or slide apart.
- 1:15This can push up land into tall peaks and ridges over millions
- 1:19of years. Now let's take a trip to some of
- 1:21the biggest and most famous mountain ranges on Earth.
- 1:24We'll learn what makes each one special, how big they are, where
- 1:28they're located, and some amazing facts about them.
- 1:32Our first stop is Asia, home to the tallest mountain range in
- 1:35the world, the Himalayas. The Himalayas stretch across
- 1:39five countries, India, Nepal, Bhutan, China and Pakistan.
- 1:44They cover about 2400 kilometers, which is longer than
- 1:48the distance from New York City to Miami.
- 1:50The Himalayas are famous for having the highest mountain on
- 1:53earth, Mount Everest, which stands at 8848 meters above sea
- 1:59level. That's almost the height of 29
- 2:02Empire State Building stacked on top of each other.
- 2:05The Himalayas are so high that they have snowed and glaciers
- 2:08all year round. Hundreds of rivers like the
- 2:11Ganges and the Brahmaputra start from these mountains because of
- 2:15all the melting snow and ice. Did you know that the Himalayas
- 2:19are still growing? The tectonic plates under India
- 2:22are slowly moving north and pushing up the mountains a tiny
- 2:25bit every year. Scientists say the Himalayas
- 2:28grow about 1 centimeter each year.
- 2:31That's about the width of your fingernail.
- 2:33Next, let's travel to South America to visit the Andes, the
- 2:37longest mountain range on land. The Andes stretch along the
- 2:41entire West Coast of South America, running through seven
- 2:44countries, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile,
- 2:50and Argentina. The Andes are about 7000
- 2:53kilometers long. That's almost twice the length
- 2:56of the entire United States. The highest peak in the Andes is
- 3:00Akankagwa, which is 6961 meters tall.
- 3:04The Andes are home to many volcanoes, high plateaus, and
- 3:08famous places like Machu Picchu, an ancient city built by the
- 3:12Inca people. The Andes are not just tall and
- 3:15long, they're also home to unique animals that you might
- 3:18not find anywhere else. Animals like llamas, alpacas and
- 3:23condors live in these mountains. The people who live in the Andes
- 3:26have learned to grow special crops like potatoes, quinoa and
- 3:30maize high up in the mountains where the air is thin and the
- 3:33weather can be very cold. Now let's head to North America
- 3:36to check out the Rocky Mountains, often called the
- 3:39Rockies. The Rockies run from the
- 3:41northern part of British Columbia and Canada all the way
- 3:44down to New Mexico. In the United States, they
- 3:47stretch for about 4800 kilometers.
- 3:50The highest peak in the Rockies is Mount Albert in Colorado,
- 3:53which is 4401 meters tall. The Rockies are famous for their
- 3:58beautiful forests, crystal clear lakes, and amazing wildlife like
- 4:02bears, elk, and mountain lions. Did you know that the Rocky
- 4:06Mountains are much younger than some other ranges like the
- 4:09Appalachians? The Rockies formed about 80
- 4:12million to 55,000,000 years ago, while the Appalachian Mountains
- 4:16are more than 480 million years old.
- 4:19That's why the Rockies have sharper, jagged peaks, while the
- 4:22Appalachians look more rounded and worn down.
- 4:25Speaking of the Appalachian Mountains, let's learn about
- 4:28them next. The Appalachians are one of the
- 4:31oldest mountain ranges in the world.
- 4:33They stretch for about 2400 kilometers from the Canadian
- 4:37province of Newfoundland and Labrador all the way down to
- 4:40central Alabama in the United States.
- 4:43The highest peak in the Appalachians is Mount Mitchell
- 4:45in North Carolina, which stands at 2037 meters.
- 4:50Even though the Appalachians aren't as tall as the Rockies or
- 4:52the Himalayas, they are covered with thick forests and have many
- 4:56hiking trails that people love to explore.
- 4:59The Appalachian region is famous for its colorful autumn leaves
- 5:02and rich wildlife. People have lived in these
- 5:05mountains for thousands of years, and many towns and cities
- 5:08were built along the valleys and rivers that flow through the
- 5:11Appalachians. Let's travel across the Atlantic
- 5:14Ocean to Europe, where we'll find the Alps.
- 5:17The Alps are the highest and most famous mountain range in
- 5:20Europe. They stretch about 1200
- 5:23kilometers across eight countries, France, Switzerland,
- 5:27Italy, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany and Slovenia.
- 5:33The highest peak in the Alps is Mont Blanc, which is 4808 meters
- 5:37tall and sits on the border between France and Italy.
- 5:41The Alps are famous for their beautiful snowy peaks, ski
- 5:44resorts and mountain villages. People from all over the world
- 5:48visit the Alps in winter to ski and snowboard or in summer to
- 5:51hike and climb. The Alps are also home to
- 5:54animals like ibex, chammy and marmots.
- 5:57The glaciers and snow in the Alps provide fresh water to
- 6:01millions of people in Europe. Did you know that the Alps were
- 6:04formed when the African tectonic plate crashed into the European
- 6:07plate about 65,000,000 years ago?
- 6:10That mighty collision pushed up the land to create these
- 6:13stunning mountains. Now let's head to Africa to
- 6:16explore the Atlas Mountains. The Atlas Mountains run for
- 6:19about 2500 kilometers across Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia in
- 6:24North Africa. The highest peak in the Atlas
- 6:27Mountains is to Call, which is 4167 meters tall and located in
- 6:33Morocco. The Atlas Mountains are
- 6:35important because they catch rain clouds from the Atlantic
- 6:38Ocean, which helps create fertile valleys where people
- 6:41grow crops and raise animals. In the Atlas Mountains, you can
- 6:45find unique animals like Barbary macaques, which are a type of
- 6:48monkey, and Barbary leopards. There are also many traditional
- 6:52Berber villages where people have lived for hundreds of
- 6:54years. Moving to Australia, we'll find
- 6:57the Great Dividing Range. This is the biggest mountain
- 7:01range in Australia, stretching for about 3500 kilometers along
- 7:05the eastern side of the country from Queensland through NSW to
- 7:09Victoria. The highest peak is Mount
- 7:12Kosciusko, which is 2228 meters tall.
- 7:16Even though these mountains aren't as high as some others,
- 7:19the Great Dividing Range is very important because it helps
- 7:22create different climates across Australia.
- 7:24The eastern side and it gets more rain, which is why you find
- 7:28rainforest there, while the western side is much drier.
- 7:31Did you know that the Great Dividing Range is home to the
- 7:34world's oldest tropical rainforest, the Dain Tree
- 7:37Rainforest, which is over 180 million years old?
- 7:41That's even older than the Amazon rainforest.
- 7:44Let's make a quick stop in Antarctica to learn about the
- 7:47Transantarctic Mountains. These mountains are not as well
- 7:50known, but they are one of the longest mountain ranges in the
- 7:53world, stretching for about 3500 kilometers across the continent.
- 7:58The highest peak is Mount Kirkpatrick, which is 4528
- 8:03meters tall. The Transantarctic Mountains
- 8:05divide Antarctica into East and West Antarctica.
- 8:09Even though most of the mountains are covered by ice,
- 8:12scientists have found fossils of ancient plants and animals
- 8:15there, which helps us learn about what Antarctica was like
- 8:18millions of years ago. Before we finish, let's talk
- 8:21about why mountain ranges are important.
- 8:23First, they're home to millions of people and thousands of
- 8:27different plants and animals. Some animals, like snow leopards
- 8:31in the Himalayas or llamas in the Andes, live only in these
- 8:34high places. 2nd mountain ranges are like giant water towers.
- 8:40They store snow and ice, which melts and feeds rivers that
- 8:44provide water for drinking, farming and electricity.
- 8:47Third mountains help shape the weather.
- 8:50They can block or catch rain clouds, which changes how much
- 8:54rain falls in different places. Mountain ranges are also
- 8:57important for adventure. People love to hike, climb, ski
- 9:02and explore these beautiful places.
- 9:04And for many cultures, mountains are special and even sacred.
- 9:09People have told stories and some songs about mountains for
- 9:12thousands of years. Let's do a quick recap of what
- 9:15we learned today. Mountain ranges are long groups
- 9:18of mountains formed by movements in the Earth's crust.
- 9:22The Himalayas in Asia are the tallest and still growing.
- 9:25The Andes in South America are the longest on land.
- 9:29The Rockies in North America are younger and have sharp peaks,
- 9:33while the Appalachians are much older and more rounded.
- 9:36The Alps in Europe are famous for their snowy peaks and ski
- 9:39resorts. The Atlas Mountains in Africa
- 9:42catch rain and have unique animals.
- 9:45The Great Dividing Range in Australia is home to ancient
- 9:48rainforests. The Transantarctic Mountains in
- 9:51Antarctica are covered in ice and hold secrets from the past.
