- 2:00Speaker 1: to take that seriously. This one is a rough one,
- 2:03Speaker 1: but that out of the way. Let's go ahead. July fifth,

- 2:43Speaker 2: and her two year old child disappears suddenly, there's no
- 2:47Speaker 2: apparent reason for it. Five days pass, no trace of them.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Your job find them.

- 3:26Speaker 4: It was Tuesday, April twentieth, was overcast in Los Angeles.
- 3:30Speaker 4: We're working the day watch out of homicide. My partner's
- 3:33Speaker 4: Ben Romero. The boss is Captain Blaine Steve. My name's Friday.
- 3:37Speaker 4: I was on the way back from communications and it
- 3:39Speaker 4: was one thirty five pm when I got to Room
- 3:41Speaker 4: forty two homicide.
- 3:45Speaker 5: A Hi, Joe, it's still for not much may word.
- 3:48Speaker 5: Ben goes inside. Captain Jervis be right back.
- 3:50Speaker 6: Oh thank you, keeping you busy.
- 3:53Speaker 5: I'm about the same little hectic around the household.
- 3:57Speaker 6: Well that's right.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Ben mentioned something about that you're getting ready for a
- 3:59Speaker 4: wedding out there, aren't you.
- 4:00Speaker 5: Yeah. My daughter Alice sure getting a nice fellow. That's
- 4:03Speaker 5: so yeah, ambitious kid, part time account, goes to law
- 4:07Speaker 5: school at night down Loyola. Real nice fellow. On to
- 4:10Speaker 5: getting married a week from Saturday's gonna be a big
- 4:12Speaker 5: church thing. Sure, glad doesn't happen often. Oh what I
- 4:15Speaker 5: mean big production. Never saw so many bills in my life.
- 4:19Speaker 5: New dress for Alice going away, luggage, bridesmaids dresses, eats, drinks,
- 4:23Speaker 5: new carpets for the hall, new curtains in the living room.
- 4:25Speaker 5: Wife must think I made of the stuff.
- 4:27Speaker 6: You should have had all boys make. Yeah, you're giving
- 4:30Speaker 6: your daughter away?
- 4:30Speaker 5: Huh yeah, Well it reminds me I got to be
- 4:33Speaker 5: sure and send my suit the cleaners. Get a good
- 4:35Speaker 5: press job on. It sure is funny.
- 4:38Speaker 6: What's that?
- 4:38Speaker 5: It seems for years a wife's been afraid we'd never
- 4:41Speaker 5: get Alice married off. Now it's finally and the works
- 4:43Speaker 5: of wife's still unhappy. Oh that those are moping around
- 4:46Speaker 5: the house wiping it. Her eyes keeps muttering something about
- 4:49Speaker 5: losing her little girl, her little girls leaving her.
- 4:51Speaker 6: I don't know, Well, how old is your daughter? Thirty two?
- 4:55Speaker 5: Well, let'll be down stats office if anybody wants, right
- 4:57Speaker 5: mac oh, fard.
- 4:59Speaker 6: Me BENI I didn't see.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Hi.
- 5:03Speaker 7: Where you been making a couple of phone calls? I
- 5:05Speaker 7: think we might have some Yeah, what's that the Gorman case?
- 5:08Speaker 7: I had to call from one of the neighbors while
- 5:09Speaker 7: you were gone.
- 5:10Speaker 6: Uh? Where is that calendar of our see? I don't know. Well,
- 5:14Speaker 6: here I got one in my pocket, here in my wallet.
- 5:17Speaker 6: Oh here you are?
- 5:18Speaker 7: Okay, Well let's see now missus Gorman and a little girl.
- 5:22Speaker 7: Nance She disappeared on the fifteenth, Is that right?
- 5:24Speaker 6: Yeah? Thursday?
- 5:25Speaker 7: Quiet and her husband, mister Gorman father the missing complaint
- 5:28Speaker 7: on Friday morning?
- 5:29Speaker 6: Right? Yeah? What are you getting at?
- 5:31Speaker 8: Well?
- 5:31Speaker 6: You remember when we talked to mister Gorman, he couldn't
- 5:33Speaker 6: think of any reason why his wife and his little
- 5:35Speaker 6: girl should disappear like I did.
- 5:36Speaker 7: Yeah, remember me asking him the question if his wife
- 5:39Speaker 7: ran around at all, if she was.
- 5:40Speaker 6: Interested in any other man. That's right, he told you.
- 5:43Speaker 7: Not this man who just called in. He lives out
- 5:45Speaker 7: in the Gorman neighborhood. He swears up and down that
- 5:48Speaker 7: Missus Gorman was keeping company with another man.
- 5:50Speaker 6: Who is this neighbor anyway, name's John Pearson, lives about
- 5:53Speaker 6: four blocks.
- 5:54Speaker 4: From the Gormans. Well, we talked to neighbors a lot
- 5:56Speaker 4: closer than that to the Gormans. They didn't seem to
- 5:58Speaker 4: know anything about it. What else the sky tell you?
- 6:01Speaker 7: Let's see, the man Missus Gorman was supposed to be
- 6:04Speaker 7: running out with is a Ralph kan his next door
- 6:07Speaker 7: to mister Pearson.
- 6:08Speaker 6: Well, how does Pearson sound you?
- 6:10Speaker 7: Pretty typical neighborhood watch dog. But here's the interesting part.
- 6:14Speaker 7: Missus Gorman and little daughter Nancy disappeared last Thursday. Now
- 6:17Speaker 7: Gordon appearson is Ralph Kane. Hasn't been seen around since
- 6:19Speaker 7: Friday night. He told me on the phone he saw
- 6:22Speaker 7: Keane toss a couple of suitcases in his car late
- 6:24Speaker 7: Friday night and drive off.
- 6:25Speaker 6: So he hasn't come back yet. It might be something.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Well, how much of a romance was missus Gorman supposed
- 6:31Speaker 4: to be having with this Ralph Kane.
- 6:33Speaker 7: It's pretty heavy. Cordon and Pearson said it's been going
- 6:36Speaker 7: on for six months anyhow.
- 6:37Speaker 6: And mister Gorman didn't know anything about it and got
- 6:40Speaker 6: me there.
- 6:40Speaker 7: If he did, he didn't let us in on it.
- 6:43Speaker 7: Wonder if you'd have any reason to cover it up.
- 6:45Speaker 4: It's possible, I guess didn't want the scandal. How sure
- 6:48Speaker 4: are you that Ralph Kane's really missing? Might be just
- 6:50Speaker 4: off on the weekend.
- 6:51Speaker 9: No.
- 6:51Speaker 7: I checked the place he worked, he's a printer. Didn't
- 6:54Speaker 7: show up for work. Money, didn't show up a day either,
- 6:56Speaker 7: no message, no excuse. I think I called a friend
- 6:59Speaker 7: of Kane's. Appears new bott. Friend doesn't no where he's going. Well,
- 7:02Speaker 7: I guess we better get on it. It's the first
- 7:04Speaker 7: decent lead in five days. Yeah, just thanking Joe. Neighbors
- 7:09Speaker 7: like Pearson? What would we do with them?
- 7:16Speaker 4: Five days before, on a Thursday evening, a mister Phillip
- 7:19Speaker 4: Gorman returned to his home in the Westlake district of
- 7:21Speaker 4: Los Angeles to find his wife, Barbara Gorman and his
- 7:24Speaker 4: two year old daughter, Nancy missing. There wasn't any note,
- 7:28Speaker 4: no explanation of any kind. Few clothes were gone. Mister
- 7:32Speaker 4: Gorman filed a missing report, and a broadcast and an
- 7:34Speaker 4: APB were gotten out on the mother and daughter.
- 7:37Speaker 6: Neighbors, friends and relatives were checked. No leads.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Routine investigation failed to turn up anything. Mister Gorman could
- 7:45Speaker 4: give us no explanation for the disappearance. After three days
- 7:48Speaker 4: we got out of a radiogram, still no results. Tuesday one,
- 7:52Speaker 4: Ben and I got in the car and drove out
- 7:54Speaker 4: to see John Pearson, who'd phoned in the information about
- 7:56Speaker 4: Missus Gorman's supposed boyfriend, Ralph Kine. We found Pierson out
- 8:01Speaker 4: on the back porch of his home beating some milk
- 8:03Speaker 4: to a pair of housecats.
- 8:05Speaker 10: I thought everybody knew that sergeant Missus Gorman running around
- 8:08Speaker 10: with that Ralph Kane. I'm all busy, buddy. I wouldn't
- 8:10Speaker 10: have mentioned it at all if this hadn't happened.
- 8:12Speaker 7: And you say Kane had been seeing Missus Gorman for
- 8:14Speaker 7: the last six months? Is that right, mister Peers for
- 8:16Speaker 7: about six months? That's how long I've seen it go on.
- 8:19Speaker 7: James don't be such a hog. Let Fred have some
- 8:21Speaker 7: of the milk too, Beaty, little the devil.
- 8:23Speaker 4: Do you know of anybody else in the neighborhood who's
- 8:25Speaker 4: been aware of this, mister Pearson, I mean Missus Gorman
- 8:27Speaker 4: and miss Ralph Keane.
- 8:28Speaker 10: Well, I know for sure that Tholoma White next door
- 8:30Speaker 10: knows about it. She's mentioned it to me. Kane used
- 8:33Speaker 10: to park with Missus Gorman near that vacant lot by
- 8:35Speaker 10: Thoma's house.
- 8:36Speaker 6: Those were the knife that mister Grman was working late.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Would you know if mister German was aware of this
- 8:40Speaker 4: that his wife was running around with another man.
- 8:42Speaker 10: I'm pretty sure he did. Sergeant, that's a strange part
- 8:44Speaker 10: about him. Well, how do you know George, the man
- 8:46Speaker 10: who delivers the groceries. He just happened to mention it
- 8:48Speaker 10: to me once. All right, James, right, it's all gone,
- 8:52Speaker 10: I run.
- 8:53Speaker 6: Off and play.
- 8:55Speaker 10: Yes, George the grocer man, he made a delivery to
- 8:57Speaker 10: the Gormans wants and heard them round about it. George said,
- 9:00Speaker 10: mister Gorman was very mad, talk divorce, all that sort
- 9:02Speaker 10: of thing.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Well, how about the Gorman's little girl, mister Pearson, little
- 9:05Speaker 4: Nancy tragic Sergeant, such a sweet little thing.
- 9:07Speaker 10: Missus Gorman kept her under an iron hand. Imagine the
- 9:10Speaker 10: little girl is only two years old. Missus Gorman was
- 9:13Speaker 10: after her with a stick all the time. She's not
- 9:15Speaker 10: much of a mother, not the way I look at
- 9:17Speaker 10: it anyway. Well, what's your opinion of all this? Do
- 9:19Speaker 10: you think that Ralph Kane has run off with missus
- 9:21Speaker 10: Gorman or what else?
- 9:22Speaker 6: Can you think? Two of them carry on for six months?
- 9:24Speaker 10: Missus Gorman disappears Thursday, Mister Kane leaves Friday night.
- 9:28Speaker 6: What else can you think?
- 9:29Speaker 7: This neighbor year is tell them a White? Does she
- 9:32Speaker 7: live in this house over here? We're going to right,
- 9:33Speaker 7: that's right right next door. You go over and talk
- 9:36Speaker 7: to her. She's home now, thelm will tell you the
- 9:38Speaker 7: same thing I did. All thank you very much, not
- 9:40Speaker 7: at all, sergeant. Just one thing I can't understand about
- 9:43Speaker 7: missus Gorman's little girl, Little Nancy. Can't quite understand why
- 9:47Speaker 7: she's gone. Doesn't seem to fit somehow. How do you
- 9:49Speaker 7: mean if you're gonna run off with a man, you
- 9:51Speaker 7: don't take your family along.
- 9:57Speaker 4: Two fifteen pm we went door and talked with the neighbor,
- 10:01Speaker 4: Delma White. She told us the same story as Pearson.
- 10:05Speaker 4: From the two of them, we got the description DMV
- 10:08Speaker 4: furnished just with the license number of Ralph Kaine's car.
- 10:11Speaker 4: We checked further with Keane's friends, relatives, and his landlady.
- 10:15Speaker 4: No one had seen or heard from him since late Friday.
- 10:18Speaker 4: We searched the duplex where he lived, no leeds. We
- 10:21Speaker 4: went back to the office and checked Kane through R
- 10:23Speaker 4: and I. He had won arrest for petty theft. We
- 10:26Speaker 4: got out a broadcast and an APB on him. Lat night,
- 10:30Speaker 4: Ben and I drove out to see the husband and
- 10:32Speaker 4: father of the missing woman and youngster, Philip Gorman. He
- 10:35Speaker 4: was employed as a groundskeeper at one of the baseball
- 10:37Speaker 4: parks in the city.
- 10:41Speaker 8: Pretty fair, it turned out tonight.
- 10:42Speaker 4: Huh, Yeah, weather's cleared up a little.
- 10:45Speaker 5: Bobby helped.
- 10:46Speaker 8: Huh.
- 10:46Speaker 6: Where's the groundkeeper shacked out.
- 10:48Speaker 8: The end there? Yeah, you can't see it from here.
- 10:50Speaker 8: It's just below the end of the bleachers there.
- 10:51Speaker 6: Oh, it's come out here very often, not as often
- 10:54Speaker 6: as i'd like to. He's down this way.
- 10:56Speaker 7: Hey, watch your step for Joey's and mud butter.
- 11:02Speaker 6: Yeah, I see it.
- 11:04Speaker 10: Oh, sorry, you're allowed to get back in the stands.
- 11:06Speaker 10: You're not allowed down in the sand. Hurry, mister Gorman
- 11:09Speaker 10: fighting Ramaro you Yeah, sure, I didn't recognize you for
- 11:12Speaker 10: a minute.
- 11:12Speaker 6: You got a few minutes. Mister Gormant would like to
- 11:14Speaker 6: talk to you if we could.
- 11:14Speaker 10: We're sure right now if you're on you found out
- 11:17Speaker 10: something about the wife a little girl.
- 11:19Speaker 6: No, it's there's nothing definite. We got a few questions.
- 11:21Speaker 6: We'd like to ask you.
- 11:22Speaker 8: What's fine with me? I got nothing to do for
- 11:23Speaker 8: a couple of mornings. What's it all about?
- 11:25Speaker 7: When we talked to you at your house the other day, Garman,
- 11:27Speaker 7: you remember me asking if you could think of any
- 11:29Speaker 7: reason why your wife and your little.
- 11:31Speaker 5: Girls would disappeared like you did.
- 11:32Speaker 8: Yeah, I remember, there's nothing like to think of, Sergeant.
- 11:35Speaker 4: Would you recall us asking you if your wife might
- 11:37Speaker 4: have been interested in some other man, somebody she might
- 11:39Speaker 4: go off with.
- 11:40Speaker 8: Yeah, I remember what I told you. I didn't think
- 11:42Speaker 8: that was it.
- 11:43Speaker 4: Now, look, if you know something and you're not telling
- 11:45Speaker 4: us because you don't want to scandal, you can forget that, Garman,
- 11:48Speaker 4: because whatever you tell us is in the strict confidence.
- 11:50Speaker 8: You know, I don't know what you're reading, Sergeant. I
- 11:51Speaker 8: told you everything I know, and we'll be honest with you. Garman.
- 11:54Speaker 8: We think you're trying to cover up. Well that's not true.
- 11:56Speaker 8: I don't have anything to cover up.
- 11:58Speaker 6: We picked up some new information on your wife this afternoon.
- 12:01Speaker 4: Well here she was pretty friendly with a man named
- 12:03Speaker 4: Ralph King, lives a few blocks in your house.
- 12:06Speaker 6: Well here that you knew what was going on. You
- 12:08Speaker 6: and your wife Barbara had a row. You talk divorce,
- 12:11Speaker 6: how about it?
- 12:12Speaker 10: Well, let's go inside the shack here. I don't get
- 12:15Speaker 10: away from some of this noise. Fine, sure, I hope
- 12:24Speaker 10: you don't mind it in here.
- 12:25Speaker 8: It's a little dirty. I keep all the maintenance.
- 12:28Speaker 6: Stuff in here.
- 12:28Speaker 10: That's all right, Gleming. Now, how about Ralph King? Yeah, yeah,
- 12:33Speaker 10: I knew about it. It's like you said, all the scam.
- 12:35Speaker 10: I just didn't want to get out.
- 12:37Speaker 6: Well, look, if you're going to hold out unless it's
- 12:38Speaker 6: not going to help much to find your wife a.
- 12:40Speaker 10: Little good, I know, surgeon. I just didn't want people
- 12:43Speaker 10: to find out what a bum I married it.
- 12:46Speaker 6: You know what.
- 12:46Speaker 10: Some neighbors were like, I can't understand how happened. I
- 12:50Speaker 10: met the wife when I was in the army.
- 12:52Speaker 6: We'll see.
- 12:52Speaker 10: I brought her back out here. Everything was fine. After
- 12:55Speaker 10: the baby was born, she started to change. Nothing satisfies.
- 12:58Speaker 10: You be going to run around. I'm but a bum,
- 13:01Speaker 10: and I guess I found out too late. You know
- 13:03Speaker 10: it's Ralph Kane. What do you know about him? You
- 13:05Speaker 10: know his single guy works at the print shop downtown.
- 13:08Speaker 10: Pretty good looking, guy's got money to spend. It's all
- 13:10Speaker 10: Barbara cares about.
- 13:11Speaker 7: What's your idea about her? You think Kane and your
- 13:14Speaker 7: wife have gone off to get it.
- 13:15Speaker 6: I'll tell her the truth.
- 13:16Speaker 8: I'm not sure.
- 13:17Speaker 6: Maybe they did.
- 13:18Speaker 10: I've been trying to check around them all. I'm not
- 13:20Speaker 10: getting very far. Only one thing I'm really worried about.
- 13:24Speaker 10: That's my little girl, Nancy. I don't care what my
- 13:26Speaker 10: wife does or how far she goes. I just want
- 13:29Speaker 10: my little girl by good.
- 13:30Speaker 6: So wasn't you any idea at all where your wife
- 13:32Speaker 6: might have gone?
- 13:33Speaker 10: Oh? None at all. She has no California too run.
- 13:36Speaker 10: She's only been out here here.
- 13:38Speaker 4: You don't know any of Keane's friends, is hangouts or
- 13:41Speaker 4: the places you think he might go.
- 13:43Speaker 10: I'd never eally met the guy, so I'm going to.
- 13:46Speaker 10: I know what he looks like, I'll meet him.
- 13:48Speaker 7: There was just one more thing going. And if your
- 13:50Speaker 7: wife was set on running off with another man, why
- 13:52Speaker 7: did you take your little girl with her? He wasn't
- 13:54Speaker 7: too devoted to the baby on her hand.
- 13:56Speaker 10: That's right. That's What's got me worried. The only thing
- 13:59Speaker 10: I can figure out is a wife hated me more
- 14:01Speaker 10: than I thought she knew that. I thought Nancy's about
- 14:04Speaker 10: the greatest thing alive. Guess rather and let me have her.
- 14:07Speaker 10: She took Nancy on.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Was it possible she might drop the baby off as
- 14:11Speaker 4: I'm friend or relative and tell them to keep on.
- 14:13Speaker 10: I've checked on that already. You got the names of
- 14:16Speaker 10: all the people we know. I'm sure they'd get in
- 14:18Speaker 10: touch with it if they had little.
- 14:19Speaker 7: Devil check them anyhow. Now, does anything else comes up,
- 14:23Speaker 7: you let us know right away. All right, Sergey, It's
- 14:26Speaker 7: just a baby. That's all Nancy's as far as I'm concerned.
- 14:29Speaker 7: My wife never lived. Kind of hard to take him with,
- 14:32Speaker 7: Yes it is. I think you got the finest set
- 14:35Speaker 7: up in the world. Nice home, job, baby, good furniture,
- 14:39Speaker 7: everything you need, yeah, everything.
- 14:41Speaker 8: But a wife.
- 14:46Speaker 4: The search for the missing wife and the two year
- 14:48Speaker 4: old daughter went on the broadcasts and teletypes on Missus
- 14:51Speaker 4: Gorman and Ralph Kine failed to let us a thing.
- 14:54Speaker 6: A week passed there were no leads. Another week went
- 14:58Speaker 6: by nothing.
- 15:00Speaker 4: The half dozen replies we'd gotten on our teletype went nowhere.
- 15:03Speaker 6: They were blind leaves.
- 15:05Speaker 4: Wednesday, May FIP, we got a call from the manager
- 15:08Speaker 4: of an auto court in the south end of the city.
- 15:10Speaker 6: He told us that a man, a woman and a
- 15:12Speaker 6: little girl.
- 15:13Speaker 4: Answering the description of the missing trio had stopped at
- 15:16Speaker 4: his place the night before. Along with Jack McCready from Homicide,
- 15:20Speaker 4: Ben and I drove out and interviewed the man. We
- 15:23Speaker 4: showed him pictures of King, Missus Gorman, and two year
- 15:26Speaker 4: old Nancy. He identified all three. He could give us
- 15:29Speaker 4: no idea where they'd gone. We checked through the cottage
- 15:31Speaker 4: where they stayed.
- 15:33Speaker 5: No, nothing.
- 15:35Speaker 7: It's about as clean as you can get a little
- 15:37Speaker 7: something here, what's that o' here?
- 15:42Speaker 6: Kid's picture book? Let's see. Yeah, take a look right here.
- 15:48Speaker 6: This book belongs to Nancy Gorman. Well, we know they
- 15:52Speaker 6: were here, that's about it. Yeah, Mac, where are you.
- 15:59Speaker 5: All right?
- 16:05Speaker 6: What did you got?
- 16:06Speaker 8: Mayor?
- 16:06Speaker 6: I have a look, where'd you find that?
- 16:10Speaker 5: Poking around this trash barrel? Here? It's like part of
- 16:13Speaker 5: a little girl's dress. Huh, yeah, there's not much there.
- 16:16Speaker 5: Did you find the rest, Elley? Oh that's all there
- 16:17Speaker 5: is just that little collar.
- 16:19Speaker 6: We take a look here, Ben, the stains right here
- 16:22Speaker 6: over here too. Yeah, what do you think may blood stains?
- 16:27Speaker 6: I'd say so.
- 16:31Speaker 4: We drove back to the office, to the crime lab
- 16:33Speaker 4: and had Lee Jones run the stains on the dress.
- 16:37Speaker 4: He ran a benzadeine test and then a biological precipitin
- 16:40Speaker 4: the stains were made by human blood. Well, it still
- 16:44Speaker 4: didn't put us any closer to the missing child or
- 16:46Speaker 4: her mother.
- 16:47Speaker 6: The search went on. We redoubled our efforts. No luck.
- 16:51Speaker 6: Another ten days passed.
- 16:53Speaker 4: We had a few more responses to our all Points bulletin,
- 16:55Speaker 4: but none of them panned out.
- 16:57Speaker 6: On May sixteenth, we got two more leads to check out.
- 17:00Speaker 6: They went nowhere. We got back to the office a
- 17:03Speaker 6: little after six pm.
- 17:05Speaker 7: Better call mister Gorman after we check in. Keep him
- 17:08Speaker 7: off of our back. Yeah, I hate to keep telling
- 17:10Speaker 7: him the same thing.
- 17:11Speaker 6: No word? Yeah, how about it? You call Gormant tonight?
- 17:15Speaker 5: Uh, mac, let's Dylan got something for your sheriff substation
- 17:19Speaker 5: called East LA.
- 17:20Speaker 6: What about the Gorman case.
- 17:22Speaker 5: They found him another auto court right there in East
- 17:25Speaker 5: La Ralph Kine and Missus Gorman.
- 17:26Speaker 6: They got him both under surveillance. How about the little girl, Nancy, Well,
- 17:29Speaker 6: that's a hitch. No sign of her.
- 17:42Speaker 3: You are listening to dragnet authentic cases from official files.
- 17:54Speaker 4: Saturday, May sixteenth, nine pm, along with Levinson McCready from Hamas,
- 18:00Speaker 4: Ben and I drove out to the Sheriff's substation in
- 18:03Speaker 4: the east end of the city. One of the deputy
- 18:05Speaker 4: sheriffs directed us to the motor court where Missus Barbara
- 18:08Speaker 4: Gorman and Ralph Kane were under surveillance. We found the
- 18:12Speaker 4: two of them in one of the rear cottages. There
- 18:14Speaker 4: was no trace of two year old Nancy Gorman. Levinson
- 18:17Speaker 4: and McCready took Ralph Kane out to the car to
- 18:19Speaker 4: interrogate him. Ben and I remained in the cottage with
- 18:22Speaker 4: Missus Gorman. She was a tall, blonde, thin faced and nervous.
- 18:26Speaker 4: She spoke with a decided accent. We questioned her for
- 18:30Speaker 4: more than two hours. We got nowhere.
- 18:33Speaker 6: Why don't you sit down, Missus Gorman? Relax?
- 18:35Speaker 9: How can anyone relax these questions?
- 18:37Speaker 6: She have no right to do for this well, maybe
- 18:39Speaker 6: you haven't got it straight.
- 18:40Speaker 4: Missus Gorman. This is a pretty important matter. We'd like
- 18:42Speaker 4: to find out about your little girl too.
- 18:43Speaker 9: Do I don't know she ran away?
- 18:45Speaker 6: Yes, ma'am.
- 18:45Speaker 4: Now we've had ten different versions. You stopped at a
- 18:48Speaker 4: hotel in Nevada and she disappeared. You were in an
- 18:50Speaker 4: auto court in Bakersfield, she ran away during the night.
- 18:52Speaker 4: We've heard just about all of them. How about the truth?
- 18:54Speaker 9: Told you everything? I'm going to tell you. I don't
- 18:56Speaker 9: know what's happened to the kit. She's gone, that's all
- 18:58Speaker 9: she's gone.
- 18:59Speaker 6: An explanation for it? Where is she gone?
- 19:01Speaker 9: She ran away? How many times do I have to
- 19:04Speaker 9: tell you? I left with Raf, who went out of
- 19:06Speaker 9: the city. After a few days, Nancy got lonesome. She
- 19:09Speaker 9: wanted to see her father, who were asleep one night,
- 19:11Speaker 9: and she ran away. It's all there is to it.
- 19:13Speaker 9: It's simple. Why can't you understand?
- 19:15Speaker 4: Well, you're gonna have to do better than at Missus Garman. Now,
- 19:17Speaker 4: how about the truth? What happened?
- 19:19Speaker 9: You can't keep me here all night? Where's Raf? I
- 19:21Speaker 9: want Raff?
- 19:22Speaker 4: Why did you take the child with you in the
- 19:24Speaker 4: first place? Missus Garman, It's pretty obvious that she didn't
- 19:26Speaker 4: want her. Did king want you to take her along?
- 19:28Speaker 9: Oh? No, he wanted me to leave her, just he
- 19:31Speaker 9: and I. That's all he wanted. Should have left her
- 19:34Speaker 9: there all this trouble questions, It's.
- 19:36Speaker 6: An easy remedy, ma'am. What did you really do with
- 19:38Speaker 6: a little girl?
- 19:39Speaker 9: She wanted off? The truth? We didn't know it. She
- 19:42Speaker 9: wanted off. We couldn't help it.
- 19:44Speaker 6: How about the little dress? We found in that autocord
- 19:46Speaker 6: with dames on.
- 19:47Speaker 9: The same questions. She always asked the same.
- 19:49Speaker 6: Questions, What about the dress? Ma'am?
- 19:51Speaker 9: Do I always have to repeat? I told you? Rap
- 19:54Speaker 9: got his hand he was shaving. It was just a
- 19:56Speaker 9: no dress or rag. Rap bandaged his hand with it.
- 19:59Speaker 6: Well, usually wear bandages a while out. You don't just
- 20:01Speaker 6: throw him away.
- 20:02Speaker 9: It was only a scratch. She didn't need the rag
- 20:04Speaker 9: very long.
- 20:05Speaker 6: Quite a few stings on the dress man must have
- 20:07Speaker 6: been more than just a scratch.
- 20:08Speaker 9: No, it's just a scratch. Can't you believe anything I say?
- 20:11Speaker 6: No, not so far.
- 20:13Speaker 9: Please? Can I go aside for a few minutes. I
- 20:16Speaker 9: have a headache. It's so hot in here?
- 20:18Speaker 6: All right, Miss Gorman? Go ahead? Many thanks.
- 20:30Speaker 9: The air is so good, terrible headache?
- 20:35Speaker 6: You mind telling you something? Missus Garman, Please.
- 20:38Speaker 9: Can't you let me alone for a minute?
- 20:40Speaker 6: Why did you leave your husband him?
- 20:43Speaker 9: Any woman would leave him?
- 20:45Speaker 6: It's Rat.
- 20:46Speaker 9: I love Rat and.
- 20:47Speaker 6: Your little girl? What about her?
- 20:49Speaker 9: My husband wanted her, not me. I'm just not like that.
- 20:52Speaker 9: I didn't want her in the first place. It was
- 20:54Speaker 9: a mistake, terrible mistake.
- 20:56Speaker 4: Is that why you got rid of it? But that's
- 20:59Speaker 4: pretty obvious by this time, ma'am. When you left your husband,
- 21:02Speaker 4: you took your little girl along for Spike Kane didn't
- 21:04Speaker 4: wanter you found out you didn't either see you got.
- 21:06Speaker 6: Rid of or NOAs that.
- 21:07Speaker 9: I didn't say that putting words in my mouth. I
- 21:09Speaker 9: didn't say that at all.
- 21:10Speaker 6: Joe Ben Yeah, might go here.
- 21:14Speaker 5: Kein's giving us half the story. Shouldn't be too hard
- 21:16Speaker 5: to get the rest.
- 21:17Speaker 9: It's a lie. There's no story to tell. Nancy ran away.
- 21:20Speaker 9: That's all we know.
- 21:21Speaker 5: Mac Kaine says they tried some kind of a death packed.
- 21:24Speaker 5: He and missus Gorman here got in a room and
- 21:25Speaker 5: turned on a gas.
- 21:26Speaker 9: He didn't tell you. He didn't tell you.
- 21:28Speaker 5: Afraid, So ma'am, that's your boyfriend's story. What else make Well,
- 21:32Speaker 5: as I say, Kane and missus Gorman got in the
- 21:34Speaker 5: room agreed to end it all.
- 21:35Speaker 6: They had a little girl with him in the room.
- 21:37Speaker 6: Well why was that?
- 21:38Speaker 5: Kane says, he doesn't know. Seemed to simplify things having.
- 21:41Speaker 6: A kid with him. Can tell you what happened?
- 21:42Speaker 5: Yeah, they turned on the gas.
- 21:44Speaker 9: No, no, never mind, miss Garman, never mind, you don't
- 21:50Speaker 9: have to say it.
- 21:52Speaker 6: Do you want to tell us about it? Miss Garman?
- 21:55Speaker 9: Yes, I'll tell you.
- 22:00Speaker 6: Three am.
- 22:02Speaker 4: We went back inside the cottage at the auto court.
- 22:05Speaker 4: We gave her a cigarette, and Barbara Gorman sat out
- 22:07Speaker 4: and told us the story. Four days after she'd left
- 22:11Speaker 4: with her two year old daughter and Ralph Kin. She
- 22:13Speaker 4: knew she'd made a mistake. She admitted that she never
- 22:16Speaker 4: should have taken the child. She said the little girl
- 22:19Speaker 4: seemed to be in their way all the time. Cain
- 22:22Speaker 4: was all for deserting the child or sending her back
- 22:24Speaker 4: to her father. Missus Gorman wouldn't agree to it, just
- 22:27Speaker 4: out of pure spite. One night in an auto court,
- 22:31Speaker 4: she and Kin had a big drinking party. They brooded
- 22:33Speaker 4: over the mixup that they'd gotten themselves into. Cain didn't
- 22:37Speaker 4: have any money to get married. He knew he'd lost
- 22:39Speaker 4: his job. Even if they could get married, Missus Gorman
- 22:42Speaker 4: wasn't sure she could get a divorce. Another full day
- 22:45Speaker 4: and night of drinking, and they decided on a lover's
- 22:47Speaker 4: death pack. They turned on the gas.
- 22:50Speaker 7: I don't get it, missus Gorman. Why'd you have your
- 22:51Speaker 7: little girl in the room with you? Why didn't you
- 22:53Speaker 7: leave her with somebody, with anybody?
- 22:55Speaker 9: Why she was mine? Wasn't she? I thought we could
- 22:58Speaker 9: go together, all three of us, but it didn't work
- 23:00Speaker 9: that way.
- 23:01Speaker 6: Well what happened?
- 23:02Speaker 9: We Raff and I woke up. Throats were burning, My
- 23:05Speaker 9: eyes were burning. Looked over Nancy. She wasn't moving. It
- 23:10Speaker 9: was just like she was asleep.
- 23:11Speaker 6: Won't you do?
- 23:12Speaker 9: Then we got in the car and left. We found
- 23:15Speaker 9: a nice place in the desert. There were nice flowers there.
- 23:18Speaker 9: We buried Nancy.
- 23:20Speaker 6: How about you and Ralph Kin? You knew you were
- 23:21Speaker 6: in deeper? Why didn't you try it again?
- 23:23Speaker 9: Oh? We did a couple of times. We loved each other,
- 23:27Speaker 9: the only thing we could do. But every time we tried,
- 23:29Speaker 9: we couldn't go through with it. We'd try, we never
- 23:32Speaker 9: could finish it. Raf got a job we were gonna
- 23:35Speaker 9: buy a gun. Tomorrow, we try again, and you.
- 23:39Speaker 6: Show us where you buried your little girl.
- 23:41Speaker 9: Yes, placed in the desert out New Palm Springs. It
- 23:45Speaker 9: was a nice place. There's lots of nice flowers around.
- 23:49Speaker 9: You understand, don't you. We were in love Ralph and I.
- 23:54Speaker 9: My husband wouldn't understand the way I loved Raf twas everything.
- 23:59Speaker 9: It was the whole world. Raff and I. I didn't
- 24:03Speaker 9: mean it that way. For Nancy. There's a mistake. You've
- 24:06Speaker 9: got to understand. I didn't mean it that way.
- 24:08Speaker 6: That's the way it is.
- 24:09Speaker 9: It doesn't matter. You can't hurt us, not Traff and I.
- 24:13Speaker 9: You can't take away what we've got. You'll never take
- 24:15Speaker 9: that away.
- 24:16Speaker 4: All right?
- 24:16Speaker 6: Do you want to get you cooked?
- 24:18Speaker 9: Yes, it doesn't matter what happens. It's for half. I
- 24:22Speaker 9: don't care what they do. I'll keep on loving him
- 24:25Speaker 9: same way I love him Now, doesn't matter. We'll pay
- 24:28Speaker 9: for our mistakes.
- 24:29Speaker 6: Yeh, lady, They're going to cost you.
- 24:34Speaker 4: At five am, we put in a call for Lieutenant
- 24:36Speaker 4: Lee Jones and the crime lab crew in the corner.
- 24:39Speaker 4: When they arrived at the auto court, we drove to
- 24:41Speaker 4: the spot in the desert near Palm Springs, where Ralph
- 24:44Speaker 4: Kane and Missus Gorman pointed out the spot where they
- 24:46Speaker 4: buried Nancy. The body was uncovered at the exact spot
- 24:50Speaker 4: was taken back to town to the County Morgue, where
- 24:52Speaker 4: an autopsy was performed. Kane and Missus Gorman were booked
- 24:56Speaker 4: in suspicion of murder. By five o'clock that afternoon, we
- 24:59Speaker 4: had the results of the autopsy.
- 25:02Speaker 5: Uh huh right, thank you bye.
- 25:06Speaker 6: What's the story?
- 25:07Speaker 5: Mah, not what we thought. I think Missus Gorman sold
- 25:10Speaker 5: us a bit of goods. Little girl didn't dine in a.
- 25:12Speaker 6: Room full of gas? What the docs say?
- 25:14Speaker 5: You found two bullet o's in the body.
- 25:19Speaker 4: That night, after hours of interrogation, Ralph Kine and Missus
- 25:22Speaker 4: Barbara Gorman both broke down and confessed that they'd killed
- 25:25Speaker 4: the child in cold blood. They pleaded drunkenness that they
- 25:30Speaker 4: weren't responsible for their actions. They were returned to their
- 25:33Speaker 4: cells and held without bail. The child's father, Philip Gorman,
- 25:37Speaker 4: was notified the following morning.
- 25:39Speaker 6: Ben and I accompanied him to the County Morgue. It's
- 25:46Speaker 6: this way, mister Gorman.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Oh thanks, Are you sure you want to go through
- 25:53Speaker 4: with this, sir, mister Garland.
- 26:00Speaker 10: Well, I might as well tell you the truth. I'm
- 26:02Speaker 10: not sure I do.
- 26:03Speaker 6: It isn't going to help much, mister Gorman, believe me.
- 26:06Speaker 6: I just wanted to see it just once more. Yeah,
- 26:10Speaker 6: Well it doesn't work, wouldn't be the same, not the
- 26:14Speaker 6: way you remember.
- 26:16Speaker 10: Just wanted to see it. I just wanted to find out.
- 26:19Speaker 10: What's it bottom mother, Ralph king, what is it that
- 26:24Speaker 10: can make them do it? Let me groce, he's only two.
- 26:29Speaker 10: What can make anybody do a thing like that?
- 26:32Speaker 6: Your wife called it love?
- 26:41Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true, only the
- 26:44Speaker 2: names were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:46Speaker 3: On September tenth, the trial was held in Superior Court,
- 26:49Speaker 3: Department eighty nine, City and County of Los Angeles, State
- 26:52Speaker 3: of California. In a moment the results of that trial,
- 27:03Speaker 3: Missus Barbara Gorman and Ralph Donald Kin were tried and
- 27:06Speaker 3: convicted in Superior Court of murder in the first degree.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Missus Gorman was sentenced to life imprisonment. Kin received the
- 27:12Speaker 3: death penalty. He was executed at the State Penitentiary San Quentin, California.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bill of Rights section of the
- 27:21Speaker 2: United States Constitution protects our freedom. Today that freedom is
- 27:26Speaker 2: endangered by tyranny and aggression. Every American must help make
- 27:31Speaker 2: our free government an example to all peoples by dedicating
- 27:35Speaker 2: himself to a constant active citizenship. Freedom needs you.
- 27:48Speaker 3: You have just heard Dragnet, a series of authentic cases
- 27:51Speaker 3: from official files. Technical advice comes from the Office of
- 27:55Speaker 3: Chief of Police W. H. Parker, Los Angeles Police Department.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Stay tuned for Counterspy next over most NBC stations.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Welcome back. This is one of those stories that, now
- 28:22Speaker 1: that I'm a dad, it just hits really differently, really hard.
- 28:30Speaker 1: What these two people did I don't have works, at
- 28:33Speaker 1: least not edifying works. The suicide pack story was bad enough,
- 28:38Speaker 1: but what actually happened was just horrific. The outcome speaks
- 28:44Speaker 1: to the reluctance of juries to give women the death penalty,
- 28:47Speaker 1: and that's the only explanation for why she would not
- 28:51Speaker 1: have been executed. On the production side, the opening lighthearted scene.
- 28:58Speaker 11: I'm sure I've heard before.
- 29:00Speaker 1: I'm just not sure where. I thought that it was
- 29:04Speaker 1: the big pair, but I wanted to listen to that,
- 29:07Speaker 1: and it had a different wedding related opener. The one
- 29:10Speaker 1: odd part of this episode was where Joe Friday's narration
- 29:14Speaker 1: told us the woman spoke with a heavy accent. That's
- 29:18Speaker 1: one of those things that you shouldn't have to include
- 29:21Speaker 1: a narration that should be obvious in an audio production
- 29:26Speaker 1: and kind of irrelevant if you were doing the drag
- 29:28Speaker 1: Net TV thing where they occasionally did, where you'll just
- 29:33Speaker 1: show them talking but not actually show the sound and
- 29:37Speaker 1: have Friday summarize what said. The accent that she used
- 29:42Speaker 1: is actually kind of vaguely European than anything I can
- 29:48Speaker 1: specifically identify. Maybe it was out of some sensitivity to
- 29:53Speaker 1: issues with making it too specific given the nature of
- 29:56Speaker 1: the crime. You had many displaced persons in the world,
- 30:01Speaker 1: and many who had immigrated to the United States or
- 30:05Speaker 1: wanted to immigrate to the United States, so highlighting a
- 30:08Speaker 1: specific nationality may have been something they wanted to avoid.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Listener comments and feedback Now, Christopher Rights love not bet
- 30:19Speaker 1: been listening since nineteen eighty five, and now to your podcast.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Thank you Adam, Well, thank you Christopher. Really to appreciate
- 30:26Speaker 1: your support and you're listening to the podcast, and we
- 30:30Speaker 1: have some comments regarding the episode the Big Run Dawn Rights.
- 30:37Speaker 1: It may just be my point of view, but fifty
- 30:39Speaker 1: eight is an elderly in regard to the age of
- 30:44Speaker 1: the one of the victims. Come on, Joe and Naomi.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Joe says, Dawn, you beat me to it. I had
- 30:51Speaker 1: to rewind to check i'd heard it correctly. Mcke Mechanic
- 30:57Speaker 1: sixty six pointed out, maybe not, but Jack Webb died
- 31:02Speaker 1: at sixty one. People tend to live longer. No, although
- 31:05Speaker 1: lifespan for Americans is on a downward trajectory. I think
- 31:11Speaker 1: it's an interesting point and always want to be careful
- 31:15Speaker 1: and sensitive to my audience. A lot of people, you know,
- 31:19Speaker 1: you hear your own age described as elderly. You gotta
- 31:23Speaker 1: go ay.
- 31:25Speaker 2: I do think that.
- 31:27Speaker 1: To expand on what Mechanics sixty six said, life was
- 31:32Speaker 1: harder in the past. The further you go back and
- 31:36Speaker 1: you don't have to go back to this era. There
- 31:41Speaker 1: have been many points about how actors used to look older.
- 31:45Speaker 1: You can go as recent as the first season of Seinfeld.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Jason Alexander was twenty nine when he filmed that first season.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Does not look twenty nine. Apologies to mister Alexander, but
- 32:00Speaker 1: at least not like a modern twenty nine year old,
- 32:04Speaker 1: and it's even more stark one I saw compared Carol
- 32:09Speaker 1: O'Connor at the age he started doing all in the
- 32:12Speaker 1: family to Paul Rudd, much older than O'Connor was then.
- 32:18Speaker 1: And while there might be some Hollywood magic involved, even
- 32:23Speaker 1: looking at non celebrity photos through the family albums, people
- 32:29Speaker 1: just looked older. And I think life took more of
- 32:32Speaker 1: a toll it. You tended to have more people who
- 32:37Speaker 1: were involved in hard physical labor, and there were so
- 32:41Speaker 1: many things about diet and the way we took care
- 32:44Speaker 1: of ourselves, and then just the things that people had
- 32:48Speaker 1: been through. If you were a fifty eight year old
- 32:51Speaker 1: woman in nineteen fifty one, you were born in eighteen
- 32:54Speaker 1: ninety three, you'd been through two world wars and a
- 32:58Speaker 1: great depression, and who knows what other hardships and that
- 33:03Speaker 1: will age a body. And we actually had a really
- 33:06Speaker 1: good episode of the Old Time Radio Snack Wagon we
- 33:11Speaker 1: did with a couple of commentaries and stories by that
- 33:17Speaker 1: great storyteller John Nesbitt about how life had become far
- 33:23Speaker 1: more easy and convenient and healthy in the time between
- 33:28Speaker 1: when he'd been a boy back towards the turn of
- 33:32Speaker 1: the century and the nineteen forties and it's been an
- 33:36Speaker 1: even more dramatic turn since then. And you know people
- 33:39Speaker 1: will say things like the your forties or the new thirties,
- 33:45Speaker 1: or your sixties or the new forties. Well, there had
- 33:49Speaker 1: to be an old thirties and an old forties, and
- 33:52Speaker 1: I will say that whether fifty eight would be considered
- 33:56Speaker 1: elderly or not, I remember growing up in the eighties
- 34:02Speaker 1: and into the nineties that there were restaurants where the
- 34:05Speaker 1: senior menu was something you got when you were fifty five,
- 34:08Speaker 1: and I actually figured out and told my dad how
- 34:11Speaker 1: many years until he could get the senior discount. He
- 34:16Speaker 1: was not pleased at the prospect, but it was a
- 34:20Speaker 1: different time, and whether he was technically correct or not,
- 34:25Speaker 1: even then, I think that it was something that could
- 34:29Speaker 1: have had some merit. Also on Spotify Mechanics sixty six Rights,
- 34:35Speaker 1: once again, Joe Friday makes an arrest that any competent
- 34:38Speaker 1: defense attorney would have been able to get thrown out
- 34:42Speaker 1: for an illegal search. If you have to clean the
- 34:44Speaker 1: window to see inside the garage, it's not in plain sight,
- 34:49Speaker 1: and we know they would never have lied about that
- 34:52Speaker 1: in court. Well, I appreciate the comment. The thing is,
- 34:57Speaker 1: when it comes to questioning the legality of Friday's actions.
- 35:04Speaker 1: They're often based on modern interpretations of the case law.
- 35:10Speaker 1: The criminal case law in regards to criminal procedure, arrest,
- 35:17Speaker 1: due process, and the interpretation of the Fourth Amendment is
- 35:23Speaker 1: something that has evolved over time, and we also have
- 35:27Speaker 1: to keep in mind while the Dragnet episodes were released
- 35:30Speaker 1: in nineteen fifty one, the cases they were based on
- 35:35Speaker 1: could have occurred many years prior at the time of
- 35:39Speaker 1: Dragnets in nineteen fifty one, the controlling case regarding the
- 35:45Speaker 1: exclusion of illegally obtained evidence was the nineteen forty nine
- 35:51Speaker 1: case Wolf versus Colorado, in which they found the exclusionary rule,
- 35:59Speaker 1: which they had applied to the federal government since nineteen fourteen,
- 36:06Speaker 1: was only adopted by seventeen states, thirty others had rejected it,
- 36:11Speaker 1: and that it was not a departure from the basic
- 36:14Speaker 1: standards of due process to allow states to introduce illegally
- 36:19Speaker 1: obtained evidence in state trials. This would not be overturned
- 36:24Speaker 1: until nineteen sixty one, or ten years after this episode aired.
- 36:31Speaker 1: So if this story happened in nineteen sixty one rather
- 36:35Speaker 1: than nineteen fifty one or before, yeah, it would get
- 36:40Speaker 1: thrown out in state court, but it didn't now Dragnet
- 36:45Speaker 1: did acknowledge when laws changed, although not often in a
- 36:51Speaker 1: supportive manner. One of the last radio episodes of Dragnet,
- 36:56Speaker 1: The Big Ruling, has fried a non due halp with
- 37:00Speaker 1: evidence being thrown out as a result of a new
- 37:04Speaker 1: ruling he hadn't kept up on, and subsequent Dragnet seasons
- 37:09Speaker 1: when the series returned in the nineteen sixties, showed how
- 37:13Speaker 1: criminals were able to take advantage of loopholes. In the
- 37:19Speaker 1: nineteen sixty six Dragnet TV movie, many viewers resonated and
- 37:25Speaker 1: still resonate with his quirk in the law speed. Yet
- 37:29Speaker 1: the Dragnet universe, I guess, if you want to call it,
- 37:33Speaker 1: could also be a bit more balanced in terms of
- 37:37Speaker 1: what is the duty of the policeman. It is the
- 37:40Speaker 1: duty to follow the law as it exists. One of
- 37:44Speaker 1: my favorite episodes of Adam twelve was called The Dinosaur,
- 37:49Speaker 1: and it is about a police officer who had been
- 37:53Speaker 1: amazing and heroic and had actually been someone that the
- 37:58Speaker 1: hero of Adam twelve Malloy looked up to, but he
- 38:02Speaker 1: had been injured in a lone of duty and he
- 38:05Speaker 1: spent eight years out of the force and came back.
- 38:11Speaker 1: But when he came back, he was stuck in the
- 38:15Speaker 1: old ways he had been doing things, and as a result,
- 38:19Speaker 1: criminals got led off and a woman nearly died as
- 38:25Speaker 1: a result. And at this point molloy had kind of
- 38:29Speaker 1: emerged in more of a leadership role, not a sergeant left.
- 38:36Speaker 1: But he just told the guy to pack it in.
- 38:40Speaker 1: He said, people need to grow with change, and you
- 38:44Speaker 1: didn't have that chance. It illustrated the degree to which
- 38:48Speaker 1: police procedures and the expectations of them in their jobs
- 38:54Speaker 1: had changed over the few years as a result of
- 38:58Speaker 1: various court rules, and I guess, as an aside, that
- 39:02Speaker 1: also might be one reason why the nineteen fifties Dragnet
- 39:09Speaker 1: kind of disappeared from circulation. One of the appeals of
- 39:12Speaker 1: Dragnet was that it showed the police and action how
- 39:17Speaker 1: they worked, but when how they worked had change radically.
- 39:22Speaker 1: You also, of course, did have the appeal of the
- 39:24Speaker 1: color episodes, but it made sense, probably to stop syndicating
- 39:29Speaker 1: the show. It is fair to question whether an arrest
- 39:33Speaker 1: today would have been allowed, or whether the evidence would
- 39:36Speaker 1: be thrown out today or even a few years after
- 39:41Speaker 1: the fact, but the fact is that it probably would
- 39:45Speaker 1: not have been thrown out in nineteen fifty one because
- 39:49Speaker 1: the exclusionary rule was not operative in most states in
- 39:54Speaker 1: the Union. Now it's time to think our Patreon supporter

- 40:42Speaker 12: I take it you and your husband haven't been too
- 40:46Speaker 12: happy together recently. We haven't.
- 40:49Speaker 11: That's why I'm not sitting around moping and moaning and
- 40:51Speaker 11: weeping over his passion.
- 40:52Speaker 12: And you have no idea what might have happened to us?
- 40:54Speaker 11: No, that is yes, well that is unless he got
- 41:00Speaker 11: drowned or something like that on one of his silly
- 41:03Speaker 11: fishing expeditions. So unless someone found out how much money
- 41:06Speaker 11: he was playing and killed him for that.
- 41:08Speaker 12: He took a great deal of money with him, yes,
- 41:09Speaker 12: he always did.
- 41:10Speaker 11: How much, missus Halford, He never told me, but it
- 41:12Speaker 11: was thousands of dollars and may be sure of that.
- 41:15Speaker 12: He left here in Sebruary.
- 41:17Speaker 11: Yes, the weather was too cold in Florida, too cold
- 41:20Speaker 11: all along the Atlantic postly so that's what he said
- 41:22Speaker 11: in his regular weekly postpod. So he tried up in Alabamondon, Tennessee,
- 41:27Speaker 11: and then Kentucky and then have a nosewhere. Then in
- 41:29Speaker 11: April he's come back here. How long he was here,
- 41:32Speaker 11: I don't know. I was in Fort Wayne.
- 41:33Speaker 12: For a few days. Then how do you know he
- 41:36Speaker 12: was here at all?
- 41:37Speaker 11: They moved one of the kids in the living room
- 41:39Speaker 11: to get to the floor safe to get some more
- 41:41Speaker 11: money to waste on fishing.
- 41:43Speaker 12: Well, how do you know he was going fishing again?
- 41:45Speaker 11: Because of the nod he left and the big freezer
- 41:48Speaker 11: with the fish he brought back to put into it.
- 41:50Speaker 12: Oh, may I see that note? I don't know.
- 41:54Speaker 11: Why not it's the making prisons here done in Fort
- 41:56Speaker 11: Wayne and willing.
- 41:57Speaker 12: To saw it to you. And you're sure your husband
- 42:02Speaker 12: left no clue what's the way he was going.
- 42:04Speaker 11: I'm very sure, mister Dallas, my husband is dead.
- 42:09Speaker 12: The word I would have heard from it.
- 42:11Speaker 11: You're doing nothing but wasting your time here, my time.
- 42:14Speaker 11: I told everything I knowed police over and over again.
- 42:17Speaker 11: If you think you can accomplish more than they have,
- 42:20Speaker 11: why don't you go down there and talk with the tenant.
