- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Sanny and Samantha and welcome to stuff.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Never told your prediction of my heart Ideo, and welcome
- 0:19Speaker 1: to another edition of Happy Hour. As always, if you
- 0:22Speaker 1: choose to drink or whatever you choose to do, please
- 0:24Speaker 1: do so responsibly. Samantha, are you sipping on anything?
- 0:29Speaker 2: I am.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Actually I needed extra caffeine today, so I made myself
- 0:33Speaker 3: a dirty chai Ooh.
- 0:36Speaker 2: You heard it.
- 0:37Speaker 3: A friend of mine, an Indian friend of mine, gave
- 0:41Speaker 3: me a great recommendation from the close Indian store that
- 0:45Speaker 3: we go to for somosas, so I got those and
- 0:47Speaker 3: then added it with my shot of espresso and sea milk. Yeah,
- 0:52Speaker 3: I'm fancy, fancy, fancy, don't worry about me.
- 0:56Speaker 4: What you doing?
- 0:57Speaker 2: What you sip it all?
- 0:58Speaker 1: I have got my classic to box red wine. I
- 1:02Speaker 1: feel like it's appropriate for the topic of the day.
- 1:05Speaker 1: And also the weather is appropriate for the topic of today,
- 1:10Speaker 1: stormy stormy weather. So if you hear any rain or
- 1:13Speaker 1: thunder that was not added in unless Rema wants to
- 1:16Speaker 1: get wild, Hey, we love that. That's just background storm
- 1:22Speaker 1: before we get into today's topic. Just as a reminder,
- 1:27Speaker 1: it is coming up our voyage with our friends at
- 1:32Speaker 1: Virgin Voyages, stuff at Sea, other podcast stuff they don't
- 1:36Speaker 1: want you to know, and stuff you should know will
- 1:38Speaker 1: be there, will be there. Yeah, yes, I'm not going
- 1:44Speaker 1: to send you on a voyage that we're not actually on,
- 1:47Speaker 1: although I would if it sounded like a good deal
- 1:50Speaker 1: for you, but yes, okay, sorry. So this is an
- 2:02Speaker 1: adult only voyage that is sailing from October second to
- 2:07Speaker 1: seventh this year, twenty twenty sixth, from New York to
- 2:12Speaker 1: from New York to Bermuda, and it's gonna be really fun.
- 2:16Speaker 1: We'll be there. We were just discussing what events we
- 2:19Speaker 1: might do, what topics we might talk about, and you know,
- 2:22Speaker 1: we might have a happy hour while on board. So yeah,
- 2:27Speaker 1: you should come check it out. We would love to
- 2:29Speaker 1: have you. If you would like to learn more or
- 2:32Speaker 1: get your spot, go to Virgin Boyages dot com slash stuff.
- 2:38Speaker 1: So today we are doing something I haven't done in
- 2:44Speaker 1: a while, which is I'm going to give some quick
- 2:46Speaker 1: hits reviews of some horror movies that I've seen recently.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Nice.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Yeah, it's that season, it is, apparently it is August.
- 2:58Speaker 1: A lot of horror movies lately, and they're doing really well,
- 3:03Speaker 1: like sometimes better than blockbusters.
- 3:05Speaker 4: They're well reviewed.
- 3:06Speaker 1: A lot of them are really well reviewed, which reminder,
- 3:09Speaker 1: we're not talking about it today. But Obsession is our
- 3:12Speaker 1: movie pick August. It has just recently come out, so
- 3:18Speaker 1: that will be as spoiled Saturdays. But this is if
- 3:21Speaker 1: you want to watch it before we do the episode,
- 3:25Speaker 1: here's your chance. I will say it is a horror
- 3:29Speaker 1: movie and it is upsetting a lot of ways, but.
- 3:32Speaker 4: I love it.
- 3:33Speaker 1: I can't wait to talk about it. So yeah, I
- 3:37Speaker 1: do love horror movies. I have been watching so many
- 3:40Speaker 1: horror movies right now. There have been a lot that
- 3:43Speaker 1: have been coming out, I think since May, and I
- 3:46Speaker 1: believe that this is demonstrative of our levels of anxiety
- 3:50Speaker 1: and stress right now, because people, as counterintuitive as it
- 3:55Speaker 1: might seem to someone who doesn't like horror, people who
- 3:59Speaker 1: are stressed who like horror, they find it as a
- 4:02Speaker 1: stress relief because it's like chemically it helps you deal
- 4:07Speaker 1: with that kind of stress in a safe way. So
- 4:10Speaker 1: there's just so many horror movies happening, and I have
- 4:14Speaker 1: so many thoughts about them and the picks I have today.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I tried to choose ones that do have something interesting
- 4:24Speaker 1: when it comes to an intersectional feminist lens. I'm also
- 4:27Speaker 1: trying to avoid spoilers, So all these movies are pretty recent,
- 4:31Speaker 1: but the it's mostly like trailer level talk I'm going
- 4:35Speaker 1: to be discussing. But if you want to avoid that,
- 4:41Speaker 1: I can. The movies we're talking about today are Leviticus, Saccharine,
- 4:46Speaker 1: They Will Kill You very briefly, Undertone, and Red Rooms,
- 4:50Speaker 1: and then Honorable mentioned Companion and back Rooms. So if
- 4:55Speaker 1: you really don't want to be spoiled on any of those,
- 4:58Speaker 1: if you've avoided the trailer or whatever that come back later,
- 5:05Speaker 1: we'll be waiting.
- 5:06Speaker 4: We'll be waiting.
- 5:08Speaker 1: So yeah, the first one is Leviticus. So. Leviticus is
- 5:12Speaker 1: a queer horror movie that came out during Pride Month,
- 5:17Speaker 1: which I did appreciate. I was very worried it was
- 5:21Speaker 1: going to be extremely upsetting, so I didn't see it
- 5:26Speaker 1: in theaters. I wanted to see it in like my
- 5:30Speaker 1: home base in case it was really upsetting, because i'd
- 5:33Speaker 1: kind of heard what it was about. Essentially, it follows
- 5:40Speaker 1: two young gay boys who they live in this really religious.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Town and uh their one their parents.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Slash kind of community figures out that they're gay. They
- 5:57Speaker 1: put them through this ritual, and the whichual makes it
- 6:02Speaker 1: so that you're haunted by I would say, demon that
- 6:08Speaker 1: looks like the person you're into. So it looks like
- 6:11Speaker 1: the person you're attracted to you or in love with
- 6:14Speaker 1: or whatever, and they attack you and try to kill you,
- 6:17Speaker 1: and they can only the demon can only do that
- 6:19Speaker 1: when you're alone. So that's kind of the premise of
- 6:22Speaker 1: what's happening in there. And I knew it was going
- 6:28Speaker 1: to have a lot of religious overtones. I am not
- 6:32Speaker 1: familiar enough with the Bible to know that Leviticus is
- 6:36Speaker 1: I guess the part that they used to justify that
- 6:41Speaker 1: you should be queer.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Yes, is one of the books of the Old Testament.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Okay, so I didn't know that. I watched it last night.
- 6:52Speaker 1: This is so this is fresh my mind.
- 6:57Speaker 4: I will say.
- 7:00Speaker 1: That based on my queer abating experience, people were saying
- 7:04Speaker 1: watch this movie. And I can see why they said
- 7:09Speaker 1: it after I watched it. But yes, so there's a
- 7:14Speaker 1: lot of stuff around the religious like overtones, not accepting queerness,
- 7:23Speaker 1: believing you're broken for being queer, and being told that.
- 7:33Speaker 4: You know it was.
- 7:35Speaker 1: At one point, the mother of one of the characters
- 7:38Speaker 1: is trying to frame it as I'm trying to protect
- 7:40Speaker 1: you because being queer is not safe. But it was
- 7:45Speaker 1: the religious ceremony that made him very much not safe.
- 7:50Speaker 1: And it reminded me of kind of the conversation around
- 7:53Speaker 1: conversion therapy or extorcism, this being something is wrong with you,
- 7:58Speaker 1: we can cure you, and then being alone with homophobia
- 8:02Speaker 1: because that whole idea of you can't the demon can't
- 8:07Speaker 1: attack you unless you're alone, and if you're with someone
- 8:13Speaker 1: then you're safe. So this is sort of this threat
- 8:17Speaker 1: of solidarity that I thought it was really interesting. So
- 8:22Speaker 1: that's what I'll say about that one without spoiling everything
- 8:25Speaker 1: that happens. But I'll tell you this, it wasn't as
- 8:28Speaker 1: depressing as I thought it would be. Okay, yeah, it
- 8:31Speaker 1: actually it generally wasn't. I was going in like, I
- 8:34Speaker 1: want to be somebody that's gonna get a text from me.
- 8:37Speaker 1: You won't believe what I put myself through when he
- 8:40Speaker 1: did this to me.
- 8:41Speaker 4: But it was it was not that bad. So, m
- 8:45Speaker 4: all right.
- 8:45Speaker 1: This brings us to Saccharin. This one comes with a
- 8:48Speaker 1: trigger warning. I would really really urge caution watching this
- 8:54Speaker 1: one if you have any disordered eating or anything close
- 8:58Speaker 1: to it any anxiety about weight. I have to say
- 9:03Speaker 1: I'm glad I watched this movie, but I was incredibly
- 9:06Speaker 1: uncomfortable during most of it, which I think is what
- 9:11Speaker 1: it was going for. But I just if you have
- 9:14Speaker 1: like a disorder reading or something, I would be very careful.
- 9:19Speaker 1: This is a movie that has been compared to The Substance,
- 9:23Speaker 1: which we have done an episode on if you would
- 9:26Speaker 1: like to go back and check that one out. But
- 9:29Speaker 1: it's it was kind of framed as a horror movie
- 9:32Speaker 1: that is in response to the rise of ozembic and
- 9:35Speaker 1: we go V culture, And so the plot of.
- 9:39Speaker 4: This one is.
- 9:41Speaker 1: The main character has a crush on the person who
- 9:48Speaker 1: like runs the gem, who is very much in shape
- 9:50Speaker 1: and she's not as in shape. She works in a
- 9:56Speaker 1: lab like studying bodies and health and stuff like that,
- 10:00Speaker 1: and she comes across this pill that is promised to
- 10:05Speaker 1: help you lose a lot of weight, and when she
- 10:08Speaker 1: like looks into it and does a test on it,
- 10:10Speaker 1: she discovers that it's the human remains, yes, which is
- 10:16Speaker 1: in the trailer.
- 10:17Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, that's what I remember of that.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, so it's human remains. And then
- 10:23Speaker 1: she does take it and continues to take it and
- 10:29Speaker 1: that kind of results in a haunting of the person
- 10:32Speaker 1: whose remains she is ingesting. Oh yeah, but it's very
- 10:38Speaker 1: like Visceral in terms of the eating scenes.
- 10:45Speaker 4: And I liked it.
- 10:47Speaker 1: I did enjoy it. It was a really rough watch
- 10:50Speaker 1: for me. There are still some things I'm grappling with, like, well,
- 10:56Speaker 1: what are we trying to say there that I'm like, hmmm,
- 11:04Speaker 1: because it is you know, that sort of messaging of
- 11:09Speaker 1: you know, fat is evil. That Becausette seems to be
- 11:12Speaker 1: how she thinks, but then they kind of have a message.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Of fat is evil.
- 11:17Speaker 1: I'm not sure I have to I'm gonna have to, Like,
- 11:20Speaker 1: I'm still thinking about that. The ending was also like whoa,
- 11:27Speaker 1: I saw it coming, but I didn't see it coming
- 11:29Speaker 1: in the specific way that it happened.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Interesting.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Yeah, so there's that one. Uh, they will kill you.
- 11:51Speaker 1: I had heard about this. I watched it kind of
- 11:54Speaker 1: on a whim. I'm so glad I did.
- 11:56Speaker 4: It's so fun and so weird.
- 11:59Speaker 1: It's it's kind of not people put it in a
- 12:02Speaker 1: horror movie category. I would say it's more of a
- 12:05Speaker 1: very strange action movie.
- 12:07Speaker 3: This is the one where she's like ready to go
- 12:09Speaker 3: she's like, oh, okay, let's go. Yeah, it has Tom
- 12:11Speaker 3: Helton in it, or Felton, Tom Felton, Yes, okay.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, it's it's like a kill Bill movie with
- 12:18Speaker 1: a cult aspect, but it has very bizarre horror movie
- 12:25Speaker 1: elements that I think I thought were really fun and strange,
- 12:31Speaker 1: like you can't anticipate where it's going, okay, I.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Can't even better.
- 12:37Speaker 1: But I included it because everybody I've shown it to
- 12:41Speaker 1: has really loved it. I have one friend who, in particular,
- 12:44Speaker 1: is trying to slowly get into horror movies, and I
- 12:47Speaker 1: thought this was a nice like I wouldn't call it
- 12:50Speaker 1: a horror movie personally, but it's adjacent okay, and a
- 12:53Speaker 1: nice like dip your toe in, And she really enjoyed it.
- 12:57Speaker 2: I love the actress, so.
- 12:59Speaker 4: Yeah, it's so fun. I really enjoy it. I think
- 13:04Speaker 4: it's great.
- 13:05Speaker 1: I also love that, and I know some people really
- 13:10Speaker 1: don't like this, but I kind of like that. She's
- 13:12Speaker 1: like a messy heroine in terms of she's really competent
- 13:16Speaker 1: and good, but she also like just takes a hit
- 13:18Speaker 1: and gets back up and go, like she's not like
- 13:19Speaker 1: always missing every hit. Yeah, so I enjoyed that.
- 13:23Speaker 4: I think it was.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I thought it was very fun. Okay, okay, so those
- 13:29Speaker 1: are my main ones I wanted to break down. I
- 13:31Speaker 1: did want to go over briefly some random podcast movies
- 13:35Speaker 1: horror movies, because you know, we like to talk about
- 13:37Speaker 1: when podcast shows up in media as we should. Yes,
- 13:41Speaker 1: the big one that I think I mentioned on the
- 13:43Speaker 1: show recently is Undertone. This actually came out a long
- 13:49Speaker 1: time ago, but it just started streaming on more popular services.
- 13:54Speaker 1: So this is another one that I was like, didn't
- 13:57Speaker 1: this come out like three years ago? But uh so,
- 14:02Speaker 1: this is it's a pandemic movie. It's very clear. It's
- 14:05Speaker 1: a pandemic movie where a woman has a podcast with.
- 14:12Speaker 4: Her best friend.
- 14:13Speaker 1: But her best friend has now moved to London and
- 14:16Speaker 1: she's in Canada, so they are they're in different time zones,
- 14:19Speaker 1: so she records at three am her time, and she's
- 14:24Speaker 1: kind of always perpetually a little tired, and her mom
- 14:29Speaker 1: has a terminal illness. She's taking care of her mom
- 14:33Speaker 1: and they do it. So honestly, like I could just
- 14:38Speaker 1: turn this into like all the funny things as a podcaster,
- 14:40Speaker 1: was like, this is absolutely not how that would go.
- 14:44Speaker 4: I would know it was a ghost immediately. There's no
- 14:49Speaker 4: way people live calling it.
- 14:52Speaker 2: No, no, wait, they still do that.
- 14:54Speaker 3: I really thought it wasn't give them credit thinking that
- 14:56Speaker 3: obviously they're doing it.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Well now, no, we don't do live calls people.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Well not only that, like some shows do that, but
- 15:06Speaker 1: you have to tell people you're going to do that
- 15:09Speaker 1: in advance, and then for them to like when they're
- 15:13Speaker 1: getting these calls and they how they have listened. Anyway,
- 15:22Speaker 1: that's not the point. It is something that I get
- 15:25Speaker 1: derailed with every time I show some of this movie.
- 15:30Speaker 1: What I thought was interesting about this movie, it's a
- 15:32Speaker 1: couple of things because it's sort of like the mother
- 15:34Speaker 1: daughter tension and then the tension of pregnancy and an
- 15:43Speaker 1: entity possibly wanting your baby. Because the way it's set
- 15:47Speaker 1: up is they have a listener right in with ten emails,
- 15:53Speaker 1: and as they go over the emails that react to
- 15:56Speaker 1: them and it gets worse and worse. So they're listening
- 15:59Speaker 1: what happens to this couple, and those things start to
- 16:02Speaker 1: happen in her life and she's extremely isolated. And I
- 16:08Speaker 1: do think the end scene is very good, like a
- 16:11Speaker 1: lot of it podcasting, Maybe somebody who isn't in podcasts
- 16:16Speaker 1: wonn't have so many like but I did enjoy it,
- 16:22Speaker 1: don't get me wrong. But I also do find it
- 16:27Speaker 1: fascinating how many horror movies we're seen lately that are
- 16:32Speaker 1: men writing about women and about women's issues that star
- 16:37Speaker 1: only women. I think that's a bigger conversation. But this
- 16:42Speaker 1: movie is essentially her and her mom and then occasionally
- 16:47Speaker 1: the podcaster friend on the phone, and it's about like
- 16:54Speaker 1: pregnancy and her relationship with her mom. And he wrote
- 16:58Speaker 1: it because I h he had gone through his parent
- 17:03Speaker 1: had been really ill during the pandemic. So I don't know,
- 17:07Speaker 1: I'm just curious. I think there's something to look into there.
- 17:10Speaker 2: No, I agree.
- 17:12Speaker 1: There's also the French movie Red Rooms, which is a
- 17:18Speaker 1: pretty brutal look into true crime podcasts and they're like
- 17:22Speaker 1: really intense fans. So it involves a character who is
- 17:30Speaker 1: just so obsessed with this true crime podcast and figuring
- 17:36Speaker 1: it out. She wants to be the one who figures
- 17:39Speaker 1: out what happened, and she's also kind of into the killer.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Oh and she's willing to pay, Like she goes into
- 17:50Speaker 1: internet dark rooms and pays a lot of money to
- 17:53Speaker 1: see the actual like videos of what happened. You as
- 17:58Speaker 1: the viewer, don't see them, I'll say, okay, but you
- 18:02Speaker 1: see her reaction to it.
- 18:05Speaker 4: So that really stuck with me.
- 18:08Speaker 1: And it is like a lot of the lighting is
- 18:10Speaker 1: in red, so it's visually striking. So there's that one
- 18:16Speaker 1: honorable mentions, just briefly because Bridget brought it up. I
- 18:20Speaker 1: did want to say Companion, which I know you haven't seen, Samantha.
- 18:25Speaker 1: I also wouldn't say this is a horror movie, but
- 18:27Speaker 1: it does have kind of some horror movie elements and
- 18:31Speaker 1: I really don't want to spoil it, but I do
- 18:33Speaker 1: think we should watch it someday. And it also has
- 18:35Speaker 1: a lot of like discussion about toxic masculinity and stuff
- 18:44Speaker 1: like that that we discussed on this show all the time,
- 18:47Speaker 1: right right right, Yes. And then I wanted to briefly
- 18:52Speaker 1: mention back Rooms only because a twenty four it became
- 18:57Speaker 1: this whole thing where they were trying to stop like
- 19:00Speaker 1: fan art around back rooms, but that really backfired in
- 19:04Speaker 1: a lot of ways. Sure, because of the origins of
- 19:08Speaker 1: back Rooms, which is like this huge YouTube series if
- 19:11Speaker 1: you didn't know it, and the creator was like, let
- 19:16Speaker 1: them be.
- 19:17Speaker 4: And I only bring that.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Up because I know some of you wrote it in
- 19:19Speaker 1: about house fan fiction, legal and all this stuff, and
- 19:22Speaker 1: some of I mean, some of the arguments are essentially
- 19:26Speaker 1: it's not but companies, no, it doesn't. It's not a
- 19:29Speaker 1: good look. I would argue that if it's transformative enough,
- 19:34Speaker 1: it's legal and it is protected under the law. But
- 19:38Speaker 1: I can't say because I haven't seen the fan art
- 19:40Speaker 1: in question. But that was a whole kerfuffle, and I
- 19:43Speaker 1: know some of you have written into me about this before,
- 19:45Speaker 1: so that's that is what I will say there. I
- 19:49Speaker 1: did watch that movie and I felt like I was
- 19:51Speaker 1: in a fever dream. But I think it's supposed to
- 19:54Speaker 1: feel like that. This was the one preview as all,
- 19:59Speaker 1: which was very nothing. It just kept doing the rewind things.
- 20:02Speaker 3: So I'm like, I feel like this is one of
- 20:03Speaker 3: those things like Severance where you're not sure what's going
- 20:06Speaker 3: on till the end. Even then it just opens up
- 20:10Speaker 3: and more like for the sequel or the next saver. Yeah,
- 20:14Speaker 3: I will ask have you seen Noma Slay no previous
- 20:19Speaker 3: about this?
- 20:19Speaker 4: All right?
- 20:20Speaker 3: This when you were talking about men is two Indian men.
- 20:24Speaker 3: They actually have a nickname Rish and Kaniche is the name.
- 20:28Speaker 2: They go by for their debut.
- 20:31Speaker 4: This is their debut.
- 20:31Speaker 3: I believe it's a horror satire about yoga essentially, and
- 20:36Speaker 3: they do have an Indian woman as the star and
- 20:39Speaker 3: then also white people. But it's gonna throw that out
- 20:42Speaker 3: and I think you need to watch that and tell
- 20:44Speaker 3: me about it.
- 20:47Speaker 4: I'm always worried.
- 20:48Speaker 1: I try my best with you, but I'm always worried
- 20:50Speaker 1: I give you bad recommendations and you won't trust my
- 20:52Speaker 1: judgment anymore.
- 20:54Speaker 3: I trust it after the fact because I feel like
- 20:55Speaker 3: you're scared enough. That's the reason I trust you, because
- 21:00Speaker 3: you're gonna go overboard telling me and I'm like, oh,
- 21:02Speaker 3: it wasn't that bad, but in your mind, like.
- 21:06Speaker 2: You understand so, but nonma slay. I feel like it's
- 21:09Speaker 2: something that.
- 21:10Speaker 3: I would want to watch because yes, it is actually
- 21:12Speaker 3: created by Indian people as well as like an Indian actress,
- 21:17Speaker 3: which I'm glad to see. And it's supposed to be
- 21:19Speaker 3: satire about how yoga community has been colonized, which by
- 21:26Speaker 3: the way, also leads to we need to talk about
- 21:29Speaker 3: some of these new forms of exercise.
