Speaker 1: What are you drinking today that that liquor cabinet is
• 0:02
Speaker 1: getting empty? What do we got today?
• 0:03
Speaker 2: Listen, lemonade, I hear the liquor store is not the
• 0:07
Speaker 2: place to go. I went, when'd you go?
• 0:10
Speaker 1: I gloved up, I masked up, I has matted up,
• 0:13
Speaker 1: and I went in and filled a freaking basket.
• 0:15
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know it's crazy. They're talking about opening it
• 0:18
  Speaker 2: back up.
• 0:19
  Speaker 1: Well not California.
• 0:21
Speaker 2: Texas is talking about opening back up next week.
• 0:24
Speaker 1: Yeah, well that's not gonna work out.
• 0:26
Speaker 2: That's just the dumbest thing I've ever heard of my life.
• 0:28
Speaker 1: That's not gonna work out for anyone. Good thing we
• 0:30
Speaker 1: have Governor k News someone if I think he's doing.
• 0:32
Speaker 2: And Garcetti man, thank goodness for Garcetti too. Man, both
• 0:36
  Speaker 2: doing well.
• 0:36
Speaker 1: Let's give them both a shout out.
• 0:38
Speaker 2: On hod On. Hold on, let's see.
• 0:41
Speaker 3: Here's some stories I'm not sure we made about a
• 0:46
Speaker 3: bunch of dogs and nurses.
• 0:50
  Speaker 2: Here's the story.
• 0:55
  Speaker 4: So YadA.
• 0:58
Speaker 1: Yead Donald Faison, it's a very very exciting day today
• 1:09
  Speaker 1: on this podcast.
• 1:10
Speaker 2: Do you know why we're getting epic today? We're going now,
• 1:13
Speaker 2: we're going uber epic today.
• 1:15
Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, don't get me wrong, the creator of
• 1:17
Speaker 1: the show That's fancy, America's favorite Canadian, Sarah Chalk. That's fancy,
• 1:22
Speaker 1: But nothing is as fancy as someone who we love
• 1:26
Speaker 1: as much as this man, who I can say I
• 1:29
Speaker 1: learned a lot as an actor from and uh is
• 1:32
Speaker 1: just a really fucking talented and hilarious human being. Stand
• 1:36
Speaker 1: by Dan with the thunderous applause que Johnny c McGinley.
• 1:40
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, boy, the legend, the legend that is John
• 1:46
  Speaker 2: c McGinley.
• 1:47
Speaker 4: Hello, Donald, Hello, Zachie, how are you?
• 1:50
Speaker 2: I'm yeah, you are always, always, always.
• 1:56
Speaker 1: Johnny, how's your how's the you know you? You were
• 1:59
Speaker 1: saying just before we started recording that you know that
• 2:03
Speaker 1: you had been homeschooling your kids, So this isn't as
• 2:06
Speaker 1: odd of a switch for you. Tell everybody a little
• 2:09
  Speaker 1: bit about that.
• 2:10
Speaker 4: We've been homeschooling forever.
• 2:12
Speaker 5: Billy is twelve, Kate's almost ten, and we've been homeschooling
• 2:16
Speaker 5: for since, all the way through elementary school.
• 2:20
  Speaker 4: Here.
• 2:20
Speaker 5: One thing in this is the friends, obviously, and we've
• 2:24
Speaker 5: been taking this thing super seriously, and we're totally locked
• 2:29
Speaker 5: down because we've got Nicole, my wife's father here, who
• 2:32
Speaker 5: has some pre existing challenges and pre existing conditions, and
• 2:38
Speaker 5: so we've been taking this thing by the letter. And
• 2:41
Speaker 5: so look, we're lucky enough to live in this place.
• 2:45
  Speaker 5: I mean, I built a baseball field during the writer's
• 2:47
Speaker 5: strike on Scrubs, and so there's a baseball field right
• 2:51
Speaker 5: behind me. And so we use that almost as a playground.
• 2:54
Speaker 5: And you know, there's stuff. This is a kid compound,
• 2:58
Speaker 5: so they can run around here. They don't get to
• 3:00
Speaker 5: see their friends. They don't go to do dance and
• 3:03
Speaker 5: aeriel and pottery and all the stuff you do when
• 3:06
Speaker 5: you're not homeschooling or go down to the beach.
• 3:09
Speaker 1: Friends. Do you have friends like I was just thinking
• 3:11
Speaker 1: about Donald, who are homeschooling for the first time. Who
• 3:13
Speaker 1: are calling you like gonny advice or anything? Because I'm
• 3:16
Speaker 1: watching Donald do it and he's like hiding out in
• 3:19
  Speaker 1: his closet.
• 3:20
Speaker 2: I've run my kids. This is how bad.
• 3:22
Speaker 5: People don't call this department for that. They call upstairs
• 3:26
Speaker 5: to the Nicole department.
• 3:27
Speaker 2: Oh, then she and I need to get on the
• 3:30
Speaker 2: phone because I am failing miserably. My wife is My
• 3:33
Speaker 2: wife is a champion. She runs the household. But I
• 3:36
Speaker 2: feel like I'm starting to slack. So much that She's like,
• 3:39
Speaker 2: when this is over, I'm leaving you.
• 3:43
Speaker 5: I think if you could compartmentalize and play to your strengths, Donald,
• 3:47
Speaker 5: you'd be better off.
• 3:48
  Speaker 2: I don't have many strengths.
• 3:49
Speaker 1: Johnny, you do. You got sports? Johnny said, he's doing PE.
• 3:52
Speaker 1: You could be in charge of PE. Dude.
• 3:54
Speaker 2: I have a competitive spirit in me that won't allow
• 3:57
Speaker 2: my kids to beat me. I have problems. Guys have problems. Well,
• 4:01
Speaker 2: then here my son screams at me because I never
• 4:05
Speaker 2: let him win. He meeting me at this We have
• 4:07
Speaker 2: this thing called Papa Shot, and it's like you know
• 4:10
Speaker 2: how you go to the carnival, of course, and you
• 4:11
Speaker 2: get to shoot as many jump shots as you can
• 4:14
Speaker 2: and you burst somebody. We have that. He destroys me,
• 4:17
Speaker 2: and that so much so that I don't want to
• 4:19
Speaker 2: play the game anymore. Man.
• 4:21
Speaker 4: Well, I'm so I'm stoked for you guys doing this.
• 4:24
Speaker 5: This h this podcast I've listened to. This is either
• 4:27
Speaker 5: the fourth or fifth one I've listened to everything, and
• 4:29
Speaker 5: it's I listened to it while I'm working out, because
• 4:32
Speaker 5: it's about an hour and a half or so. And
• 4:33
Speaker 5: I put it on and I go in the garage
• 4:35
Speaker 5: and it just makes me happy?
• 4:38
  Speaker 1: Does it?
• 4:38
Speaker 2: Does it get when the theme song comes on? Does
• 4:41
Speaker 2: that get you pumped?
• 4:42
Speaker 4: I liked it. Well, you guys are so goddamn town.
• 4:45
Speaker 1: Johnny, Johnny, we wrote that. It's our first It's our
• 4:47
Speaker 1: first time as as as lyricists. Donald, I don't know
• 4:50
Speaker 1: if you've been a lyricist before, but it's my first
• 4:52
Speaker 1: time as a lyrics putting.
• 4:53
Speaker 2: I put a lyric or two to two songs in
• 4:56
Speaker 2: song form. I've done it.
• 4:58
Speaker 1: Yes, Well, it's my first time, and I you're.
• 5:01
Speaker 2: Very good at it. That's not your first time, dude.
• 5:03
Speaker 2: You say that. Listen, guys, you don't remember the songs
• 5:05
Speaker 2: that we had. Baby, keep it real, Baby, let's chill.
• 5:12
Speaker 2: I'm tired of you all up in.
• 5:16
Speaker 4: My Crewe see Donald so goddamn talent that he could
• 5:21
Speaker 4: sing all these songs and remember his lines. I could
• 5:24
Speaker 4: only do one thing, remember my lines.
• 5:28
Speaker 1: Well, I want to talk about that for a second, Johnny,
• 5:30
Speaker 1: because Donald did. Donald you well, as far as I
• 5:32
Speaker 1: see it, in the world of scrubs, there were two extremes.
• 5:35
Speaker 1: There was you knowing every fucking piece of syllable and
• 5:39
Speaker 1: punctuation mark and Donald being like am I in the scene.
• 5:47
Speaker 5: Yeah, but Donald's so goddamn talented that even if it
• 5:50
Speaker 5: took him three or four takes, the fourth take was perfect.
• 5:54
  Speaker 4: It was heaven.
• 5:54
Speaker 5: I mean in this episode, in this episode we'll talk
• 5:59
Speaker 5: about in this but there's a scene where he dances
• 6:02
Speaker 5: to Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson knockoff and Billy had to
• 6:06
Speaker 5: be just it's like a fair catch in football. He's
• 6:09
Speaker 5: just like that was manna from heaven that an actor
• 6:12
Speaker 5: would bust that out.
• 6:12
Speaker 4: That's not on the page. No, that was not on
• 6:15
  Speaker 4: the page.
• 6:16
  Speaker 1: It wasn't.
• 6:16
Speaker 2: I think that's also the beginning of turk dancing and
• 6:20
Speaker 2: damn near I believe a gift.
• 6:23
  Speaker 4: Yea.
• 6:23
Speaker 1: Yeah, Johnny, what was talk a little bit about how
• 6:26
Speaker 1: you did those because sometimes, just for people who are listening,
• 6:28
Speaker 1: Johnny would sometimes get those speeches the night before, because the.
• 6:32
Speaker 2: Writers were sometimes the day before, hours before.
• 6:35
  Speaker 4: Absolutely speech.
• 6:36
Speaker 1: Yeah, and I just I for those of you who
• 6:38
Speaker 1: don't memorize for a living, it's can be very hard.
• 6:41
Speaker 1: But doing what Johnny had to do on the spot
• 6:43
Speaker 1: is sometimes close to impossible. So I remember you having
• 6:46
Speaker 1: a bit of a system, will you will you talk
• 6:48
Speaker 1: about that for people?
• 6:49
Speaker 5: Well, I keep these composition books. Uh, you know the
• 6:52
Speaker 5: composition books you have in high school, those black and
• 6:55
Speaker 5: white things. Well, the first thing I do is I
• 6:57
Speaker 5: write out the text in my own hand, and in
• 7:00
Speaker 5: the margins I put the verbs of what I'm doing.
• 7:02
Speaker 5: And so that just by virtue of writing it out
• 7:04
Speaker 5: starts to get it in your skull. And then by
• 7:07
Speaker 5: assigning verbs to every action that you're doing, that's the
• 7:10
  Speaker 5: second stage.
• 7:12
Speaker 4: And then if I had time, I keep a rehearsal
• 7:14
  Speaker 4: space here.
• 7:15
Speaker 5: I would go down and there's a whole kind of
• 7:17
Speaker 5: little film studio downstairs, and I would get in front
• 7:21
Speaker 5: of that. But a lot of times that was out
• 7:22
Speaker 5: the window because Billy would hand it to you on
• 7:24
Speaker 5: your way into the hospital.
• 7:26
Speaker 4: And I'm not being method. Hospital.
• 7:29
Speaker 5: We did, in fact, work in a defunct hospital. Sometimes
• 7:33
Speaker 5: I'll say that that. Different people are like, ooh, you're
• 7:36
Speaker 5: so method. I'm like, no, not fucking method.
• 7:38
Speaker 4: It was a hospital.
• 7:38
Speaker 5: So I set the fuck up, and so I got
• 7:43
Speaker 5: when I got to the hospital, and they would hand
• 7:45
Speaker 5: me new lines every year.
• 7:47
Speaker 4: Disney would give us make it up.
• 7:48
Speaker 5: You guys, remember but fifteen hundred dollars to improve our
• 7:52
Speaker 5: dressing rooms. Since our dressing rooms were hospital rooms where
• 7:55
Speaker 5: people had died and where people had been saved. And
• 7:58
Speaker 5: what I did with my fifteen hundred dollars is I
• 8:01
Speaker 5: doubled down, and I hired an acoustic firm, and they
• 8:04
Speaker 5: came in and soundproofed my dressing room so I wouldn't
• 8:07
Speaker 5: have to hear you idiots in.
• 8:08
Speaker 4: The hallway and all the dogs.
• 8:11
Speaker 5: For some reason, because one or two of you brought
• 8:14
Speaker 5: your dogs, the whole crew decided, well, if Zach and
• 8:17
Speaker 5: Donald can do it, the guy in sound and the
• 8:20
Speaker 5: guy the productions is that he.
• 8:21
  Speaker 4: Can do it.
• 8:21
Speaker 5: So all of a sudden there was a pack of
• 8:23
Speaker 5: about son marteen dogs, and as Karma would have it,
• 8:28
  Speaker 5: And I like dogs. I hate most people's dogs. I
• 8:30
Speaker 5: just I like dogs, but I don't like them at work.
• 8:34
Speaker 2: And so I remember, I remember that. I remember all
• 8:38
Speaker 2: all you would hear was get out.
• 8:40
Speaker 5: I'm trying to remember space two pages, single space.
• 8:44
Speaker 1: Do you remember do you remember in the Christmas Story
• 8:47
Speaker 1: how he's always fighting the dogs next door. That was
• 8:49
Speaker 1: like Johnny C on our on our floor, because Johnny
• 8:53
Speaker 1: C was like, oh, someone shut the dogs up. The
• 8:55
Speaker 1: dogs all wanted to be with Johnny C.
• 8:57
Speaker 5: In a round absolutely and so much so that I
• 9:00
Speaker 5: don't know you guys are remember I don't know what season.
• 9:03
Speaker 5: But I wrote a letter to our bosses at Disney,
• 9:06
Speaker 5: to the HR Department Human Resources. And then I did
• 9:10
Speaker 5: what you're supposed to do with an angry letter. I
• 9:12
Speaker 5: according my grandfather, I put it in the drawer for
• 9:15
Speaker 5: two nights. You're supposed to take angry letters. You don't press.
• 9:18
Speaker 5: This was not when you press send. I wrote it,
• 9:20
Speaker 5: and I put it in the drawer for two nights.
• 9:22
Speaker 5: And in the intervening time, someone got nipped by a
• 9:26
Speaker 5: dog on our roar, and Disney found out about it,
• 9:30
Speaker 5: not because of me, and they were like, what, there
• 9:32
Speaker 5: are seventeen dogs kissing and shitting on the third floor.
• 9:37
Speaker 4: I took that letter and I put it right over
• 9:39
Speaker 4: in the shredder because.
• 9:41
Speaker 1: I thought I thought you were I thought you were
• 9:43
Speaker 1: going to give us a big reveal that you had
• 9:45
Speaker 1: written the HR letter. But you're saying you never said
• 9:48
  Speaker 1: to it.
• 9:48
  Speaker 4: I did not.
• 9:49
Speaker 5: I kept it in the drawer, and then I was
• 9:51
Speaker 5: let off the hook. Because if you're the guy who
• 9:54
Speaker 5: made it so that people couldn't bring their goddamn dogs
• 9:57
Speaker 5: to work, then you're that guy. I was look, the
• 10:01
Speaker 5: fact of the matters that you asked, how do you
• 10:04
  Speaker 5: memorize those things?
• 10:05
Speaker 4: Good? Fear? Fear is a really good thing.
• 10:08
Speaker 5: And I was just afraid to disappoint Billy, and I
• 10:11
Speaker 5: wanted him to write those things for me.
• 10:13
Speaker 4: And so you were so good at a way to
• 10:16
Speaker 4: get him into my skull.
• 10:17
Speaker 1: You were so good at it, John, And those rants.
• 10:19
Speaker 1: I was looking on YouTube just as we were gearing
• 10:21
Speaker 1: up for this episode, and just like people have like
• 10:24
Speaker 1: top five Doctor Cox rants, like it's like a thing.
• 10:28
Speaker 1: People love to just listen back to those, and just
• 10:31
Speaker 1: some of them are just so epic and hilarious.
• 10:34
Speaker 5: Where they get hard is when Billy started, and I
• 10:36
Speaker 5: don't know whether it was season four or five six,
• 10:39
Speaker 5: it's a good problem. When he just started writing lists
• 10:42
Speaker 5: that had nothing to do with the item that came
• 10:45
Speaker 5: before it, and he just write two pages of lists
• 10:49
Speaker 5: reasons why I don't care about you becoming a doctor
• 10:53
Speaker 5: or something like that, and they're just this random list.
• 10:57
Speaker 5: Those were hard memorizing his story, but.
• 11:01
Speaker 4: These lists to two pages, single space a list.
• 11:06
Speaker 1: On the other side, we were talking about how Donald
• 11:08
Speaker 1: would show up and be like, oh shit, I got
• 11:10
  Speaker 1: a monologue today.
• 11:15
Speaker 2: A time in my life. That was a time in
• 11:17
  Speaker 2: my life. I don't know. I just I don't know
• 11:20
Speaker 2: what was the matter with me. I smoked. I smoked
• 11:23
Speaker 2: a lot of marijuana back then too, not that I
• 11:26
Speaker 2: don't now, but I smoked a tremendous amount back then.
• 11:29
Speaker 2: I don't think this was the beginning of the run
• 11:31
Speaker 2: that I did this. I think as I got comfortable,
• 11:34
Speaker 2: things changed, and as the show got successful, things changed
• 11:38
Speaker 2: and I slacked, And I remember somebody asking me like, dude,
• 11:41
Speaker 2: what do you do when you go home? And I
• 11:43
Speaker 2: was like, I live my life. They were like, they
• 11:48
Speaker 2: were like, but what about your job. I was like,
• 11:50
Speaker 2: it's getting done, like I was.
• 11:52
Speaker 1: So I think you just got comfortable that you knew
• 11:55
Speaker 1: that you'd get it, and you knew that it would
• 11:57
Speaker 1: be cut together and be funny. So you're just like,
• 11:59
  Speaker 1: fugget well.
• 12:01
  Speaker 2: I don't know if I was, Yeah, you know, I
• 12:03
Speaker 2: don't know what it was. Since then, I have, you know,
• 12:07
Speaker 2: I've tried to make sure that if I ever ran
• 12:09
Speaker 2: into anyone else, if I ran into people on other
• 12:12
Speaker 2: jobs that worked with me on scrubs and remembered how
• 12:16
Speaker 2: I was on scrubs, I wanted them to have a
• 12:18
Speaker 2: completely different opinion of me after we finished working. And
• 12:24
Speaker 2: so it's if anything, uh, all of the you know,
• 12:28
Speaker 2: all of the you know, me being unprepared and stuff
• 12:31
Speaker 2: like that prepared me for later on because now forget
• 12:35
Speaker 2: about it. You know, I'm like you, Johnny, if I
• 12:37
  Speaker 2: mess up a line, I'm putting a hole through a
• 12:40
Speaker 2: wall or something like that. You know what I mean.
• 12:42
Speaker 5: I want you to get it done in three or
• 12:43
Speaker 5: four takes. I want us to get out of here
• 12:46
  Speaker 5: get it.
• 12:46
Speaker 2: If I'm not done it, if I can't do it
• 12:48
Speaker 2: in three takes, then forget about it.
• 12:49
  Speaker 4: Man.
• 12:50
Speaker 2: Like then I've wasted I feel like I've wasted everybody's time.
• 12:54
Speaker 1: Well I feel that more, and especially now when it's
• 12:56
Speaker 1: not your own show. When I'm going to do a
• 12:57
Speaker 1: supporting part on something and I fuck up line, I
• 13:00
Speaker 1: just I get so mad at myself.
• 13:02
  Speaker 4: You know.
• 13:03
Speaker 1: It's funny, you know, after doing the show for nine years,
• 13:05
Speaker 1: we were so comfortable and that that comfortableness led to
• 13:09
Speaker 1: a lot of amazing stuff because there was no wrong answer,
• 13:11
Speaker 1: and we were so silly with each other and we
• 13:13
Speaker 1: could riff. But now I find when I go do
• 13:16
Speaker 1: roles where I'm not the lead or I'm supporting, or
• 13:19
  Speaker 1: I'm or I'm in any whatever I'm doing. I'm really
• 13:22
Speaker 1: get mad at myself if I fuck up a line
• 13:24
Speaker 1: like I really, I really put more effort into it
• 13:26
Speaker 1: than I ever have.
• 13:26
Speaker 2: I was about to say, because Zach, I remember a
• 13:28
Speaker 2: night where you put the sides people out there who
• 13:32
Speaker 2: don't know what sides are there, the piece of paper
• 13:34
Speaker 2: where the line where they write, the where they miniaturize
• 13:37
  Speaker 2: the script into.
• 13:38
Speaker 1: The tiny Each day we get a tiny version of
• 13:40
Speaker 1: the script. It's probably I don't know what is it,
• 13:43
Speaker 1: like eight inches by four.
• 13:44
Speaker 2: Inches something like that. I remember one night where you
• 13:47
Speaker 2: take those sides to my forehead on off camera.
• 13:50
Speaker 1: Yeah, but I would like everyone to google Marlon Brando
• 13:54
Speaker 1: in The Godfather and you'll see and you can just
• 13:58
Speaker 1: put in like Marlin ran Godfather line memorization and you'll
• 14:03
Speaker 1: see a picture with James Khan with a huge poster
• 14:07
Speaker 1: board taped to his chest. Now, I'm not saying is
• 14:11
Speaker 1: this real. Yeah, I'll send you guys the picture. I'm
• 14:14
  Speaker 1: not saying I'm I'm I'm Marlon Brando, but I am
• 14:16
Speaker 1: saying you're James Kahn and I uh, yeah, listen, there's
• 14:21
Speaker 1: times where you go, I'm fucked. I do not know this, Donald,
• 14:24
Speaker 1: would you mind taping this to your forehead?
• 14:27
Speaker 2: No, you didn't say, Donald, would you mind? You were like,
• 14:29
Speaker 2: come here, No, No, used to I remember taking off
• 14:32
Speaker 2: and be like you mother, I will know.
• 14:33
Speaker 1: What we used to do is like, whenever there was
• 14:35
Speaker 1: a place to hide them out of camera, we'd tape
• 14:37
Speaker 1: them to the desk, We'd tape them to whatever. Sometimes
• 14:39
Speaker 1: you tape them to the front of the camera. But
• 14:41
Speaker 1: I remember that one time I couldn't get it down
• 14:43
Speaker 1: and was like the time was running out, and I
• 14:45
Speaker 1: was like, Donald, I'm so sorry, but I need my
• 14:48
Speaker 1: character needs to be looking at your face. Johnny, you
• 14:54
Speaker 1: never did that. Donald, Donald and I would hide our
• 14:57
Speaker 1: sides all over the place. I don't have any memory
• 14:59
Speaker 1: you ever do it.
• 14:59
Speaker 2: Johnny used to have like little notes here and there
• 15:01
  Speaker 2: in your hand.
• 15:02
Speaker 1: No, but not he wouldn't hide them and reference them
• 15:04
Speaker 1: during the scene like you.
• 15:05
  Speaker 4: No.
• 15:05
  Speaker 2: No, No.
• 15:06
Speaker 5: I just if I was struggling with Latin, which all
• 15:09
Speaker 5: medical terms are Latin based, if I was struggling with
• 15:12
Speaker 5: something in Latin that I hadn't been on the phone
• 15:15
Speaker 5: with real JD for an hour the night before I would.
• 15:19
Speaker 5: I would fanatically put it on those clipboards that we carried,
• 15:22
Speaker 5: and the last second I'd take a look. Now, I remember,
• 15:26
Speaker 5: the hardest one ever was broken heart syndrome. Was took
• 15:29
Speaker 5: a subo cardio myopathy. And that's about this long, and
• 15:33
Speaker 5: I still freaking remember it took a subo cardio myopathy.
• 15:39
Speaker 2: Now, legend has it that some of the best home
• 15:43
Speaker 2: tests for movies or television shows have happened at your house.
• 15:48
Speaker 2: Is it true that you once dug a hole in
• 15:50
Speaker 2: your backyard for a part?
• 15:52
Speaker 1: No, that's not true. No, what are you talking about.
• 15:56
Speaker 1: Why would he dig a hole in his backyard?
• 15:58
Speaker 2: I thought he was self taped and was digging a hole.
• 16:01
Speaker 1: Oh oh, he's saying that you, you like, got all
• 16:04
Speaker 1: into yourself tapes and would dig holes. What would that
• 16:06
Speaker 1: be for platoon? Like he's gonna audition something.
• 16:09
Speaker 4: No. No, I met with Oliver five times. No, No,
• 16:13
  Speaker 4: but you did.
• 16:13
Speaker 2: But you did used to self tape at home a lot.
• 16:15
Speaker 2: Though at some point right well.
• 16:17
Speaker 4: When that came into vogue.
• 16:19
Speaker 5: Sure, now you can do it on this thing, but
• 16:21
Speaker 5: for a little while, you know, there's a camera on
• 16:23
Speaker 5: a tripod down there was down in the rehearsal space
• 16:26
Speaker 5: and yeah, for a little while.
• 16:27
Speaker 4: That that's what auditions came to be.
• 16:30
Speaker 1: Yeah, Dony, that's a good segue into into your auditioning
• 16:34
Speaker 1: for this. You Donald and I and we asked Sara
• 16:36
Speaker 1: to talk a little bit about our experiences. QUI hilarious, right.
• 16:43
Speaker 4: I listened to all of it yesterday. It was genius.
• 16:46
Speaker 1: So tell us about yours, because you know, and you
• 16:48
Speaker 1: heard Bill's telling of yours. But I think I think
• 16:51
Speaker 1: our fans are interested and how it all came to be.
• 16:54
Speaker 1: Do you remember, like your very first time reading and
• 16:57
  Speaker 1: all that.
• 16:57
Speaker 2: Yeah, because you had already been in so many other
• 16:59
  Speaker 2: things before this.
• 17:00
Speaker 1: I know you were coming to it from a very
• 17:02
Speaker 1: different space because you'd been in such amazing movies, and
• 17:07
Speaker 1: I just wondered, you know, Donald had done some work.
• 17:10
Speaker 1: I had done virtually nothing, So how is it different
• 17:14
  Speaker 1: for you?
• 17:15
Speaker 5: I was coming from because I heard Zachie, I heard
• 17:17
Speaker 5: yours with that you were a waiter at the La
• 17:21
Speaker 5: Colonial Coloni. Yeah, you were a waiter over there, And
• 17:24
Speaker 5: I know Donald had done Denzel's movie and done something.
• 17:28
Speaker 5: But I was on a track and how to take
• 17:31
Speaker 5: something off of this? So it doesn't sound arrogant, but
• 17:33
Speaker 5: I was on about I was on a track of
• 17:36
Speaker 5: doing about four films a year, and in my brain
• 17:40
Speaker 5: it was that if you ever.
• 17:41
Speaker 4: I said yes to everything.
• 17:43
Speaker 5: So I did plenty of stinkers, but I just always
• 17:46
Speaker 5: felt like that more film begat more film. So I
• 17:50
Speaker 5: was just always around the world doing whatever you offered me.
• 17:55
Speaker 5: And I wasn't going to come off the film train.
• 17:57
Speaker 5: And so then they sent me scrubs and there was
• 18:00
Speaker 5: as Billy told you, there was a John McGinley part
• 18:06
Speaker 5: in parentheses. It said a John McGinley type for doctor Cox.
• 18:10
Speaker 5: And I'm like, well, just make the offer.
• 18:15
Speaker 4: And as you mean lack. Yeah.
• 18:19
Speaker 5: So I went into meet with Billy over at Disney
• 18:23
Speaker 5: and that was great. He was, you know, he was
• 18:26
Speaker 5: one of the great guys in the planet.
• 18:27
  Speaker 4: And then.
• 18:29
Speaker 5: By the time, actors do this weird thing when they
• 18:32
Speaker 5: get a little too comfortable as they subvert themselves, and
• 18:36
Speaker 5: I felt like I did that because there were tears
• 18:38
Speaker 5: of different hierarchy that you had to go through on
• 18:42
  Speaker 5: this thing.
• 18:42
Speaker 4: There was the casting people, which I got to skip.
• 18:45
  Speaker 4: There was Billy.
• 18:46
Speaker 5: Then you had to audition to Disney, then you had
• 18:48
Speaker 5: to audition at NBC.
• 18:50
Speaker 4: And so I tanked the one at Disney. And I
• 18:53
Speaker 4: don't know why. I was either lazy or presumptuous or
• 18:58
  Speaker 4: but a sock.
• 19:00
Speaker 1: Donny, did you feel that in the room?
• 19:03
Speaker 5: I always know, Yeah, And so I told I said, Billy,
• 19:07
Speaker 5: just let me go to the next level.
• 19:09
Speaker 4: I'll blow the back of the room out, just don't.
• 19:13
Speaker 5: I just filed a few off at at Disney. And
• 19:16
Speaker 5: when I went to NBC, as you guys have have
• 19:20
Speaker 5: have sorted it out with Billy and Sarah, there's a
• 19:23
Speaker 5: room not much bigger than the one I'm sitting in,
• 19:25
Speaker 5: maybe sixteen by twenty, and it's the casting guys room.
• 19:30
Speaker 4: And there's people on the fennel, on the fence. There's
• 19:33
  Speaker 4: people everywhere.
• 19:34
Speaker 1: Hiding on the city, sitting on the ground over it.
• 19:38
Speaker 5: It's like a bad Thanksgiving talent show production with your
• 19:41
Speaker 5: aunts and uncles. And so I didn't recognize there were
• 19:45
Speaker 5: four or five other doctor Coxes there.
• 19:47
Speaker 4: I didn't recognize any of them.
• 19:50
Speaker 5: And I was just like, it didn't really matter because
• 19:53
  Speaker 5: I already did.
• 19:55
  Speaker 4: Just for actors.
• 19:56
Speaker 5: You can get good at auditioning, and I got really
• 20:00
Speaker 5: good at it because I used the rehearsal space as
• 20:03
Speaker 5: a spot to get this four minute compressed little impression
• 20:08
Speaker 5: you make a discipline down.
• 20:11
Speaker 4: I got really good at it. The fact that I
• 20:13
Speaker 4: tanked that Disney didn't matter. I was doing some other bullshit.
• 20:16
Speaker 5: But when I went into that room, I was just
• 20:19
Speaker 5: going to fucking kill it.
• 20:21
  Speaker 4: And I did.
• 20:22
Speaker 5: And when I shut the door, and at the time,
• 20:24
Speaker 5: I had this Jersey muscle car. I had a Mustang
• 20:26
Speaker 5: five point zero black convertible and I started.
• 20:29
Speaker 4: Driving home in the one oh one and I was like,
• 20:32
Speaker 4: I put Bruce on and it was blaring, and I'm like,
• 20:35
Speaker 4: I definitely got that. And if I didn't, the show sucks.
• 20:40
Speaker 1: Bill told do you hear Bill's story where he said, Johnny,
• 20:42
Speaker 1: how do you feel it? You said, like cash, money
• 20:44
Speaker 1: or something like that.
• 20:45
Speaker 4: I said it was money. I said money. He said,
• 20:48
Speaker 4: if you want to do it again?
• 20:49
Speaker 5: And I'm like, I hate when directors say do you
• 20:53
Speaker 5: want to do it again?
• 20:54
Speaker 4: Because if you got it, you got it. Because all
• 20:57
Speaker 4: I do when I do things again.
• 20:59
Speaker 5: When you asked me, I'm gonna start changing things, and
• 21:02
Speaker 5: I hate rewriting it. If everything's I like to rewrite shit.
• 21:05
Speaker 5: I don't like to rewrite anything. I like it on
• 21:07
Speaker 5: the page I like to crush it and I like
• 21:09
Speaker 5: to leave. And then if you ask me to keep
• 21:11
Speaker 5: doing it again and again, I'm gonna get bored because
• 21:13
Speaker 5: I know you haven't in the can, and I'm gonna
• 21:15
Speaker 5: start changing things. And what I did with doctor Cox
• 21:18
Speaker 5: over the years is so I changed his syncopation. I
• 21:21
Speaker 5: turned into this kind of Martin Scorsese on LSD thing where.
• 21:25
Speaker 4: I did these long pauses. And because I was getting.
• 21:29
Speaker 1: Bored and again, like sometimes you'd walk in out and
• 21:33
Speaker 1: do some like we like crazy pause.
• 21:35
Speaker 4: I was, and I would stretch these words.
• 21:38
Speaker 1: And I run want people love that when you go right.
• 21:43
Speaker 4: I was bored. I want to fucking some more. I
• 21:47
  Speaker 4: wanted more challenges.
• 21:49
Speaker 5: And so that's the actor's brains if it's really firing,
• 21:51
Speaker 5: like our brains were on that thing. Remember, people don't
• 21:54
Speaker 5: understand we were there sixteen hours a day, five days
• 21:57
Speaker 5: a week. We spent much more time with each other
• 21:59
Speaker 5: than we did any semblance of family, because there's a
• 22:01
Speaker 5: finite amount of hours in a week. And for nine years,
• 22:05
Speaker 5: pretty much we were together for fourteen to by the
• 22:09
Speaker 5: end of the week, sixteen hours and in.
• 22:12
Speaker 1: An hospital, in an abandoned hospital.
• 22:14
Speaker 4: In an abandoned hospital.
• 22:16
Speaker 5: And it's almost like Donald will understand when you're practicing
• 22:19
Speaker 5: free throws, if you do nothing but practice free throws,
• 22:22
Speaker 5: you will get good at it.
• 22:24
  Speaker 4: You just will.
• 22:26
Speaker 5: And by virtue beat just scrub saturation, people got really
• 22:30
Speaker 5: good at their jobs.
• 22:32
Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, that was the other thing. I remember times
• 22:35
Speaker 2: where we'd you'd have like long, long monologues. There were
• 22:40
Speaker 2: times where you didn't get it in one take, but
• 22:41
Speaker 2: then there were times where you would get it in
• 22:43
Speaker 2: one take. And I remember directors being like, should we
• 22:45
Speaker 2: go again, and you being like, we got it, let's go,
• 22:48
Speaker 2: and like we only got one take, John, and I'm
• 22:51
Speaker 2: moving on, let's go.
• 22:52
Speaker 1: There's so many Donald Let's go through some of our
• 22:54
Speaker 1: favorite johnnyisms. One that just came to my mind was
• 22:57
Speaker 1: moving on, you're five good ones for you. There's five
• 23:00
Speaker 1: good ones for you. Was when you it would shake
• 23:02
  Speaker 1: your hand.
• 23:03
Speaker 2: How are you better now?
• 23:05
  Speaker 4: Yeah? Better now?
• 23:06
Speaker 1: And then he'd go when we were done with John
• 23:09
Speaker 1: Michelle was the name of one of our editors, and
• 23:11
Speaker 1: when when when we were done with the scene, he'd go,
• 23:13
Speaker 1: I think we gave Jean Michelle some memmo.
• 23:19
Speaker 5: Yeah, cut to cut through a couple of days later,
• 23:22
Speaker 5: I'm down in the editing suite just micromanaging everything John
• 23:25
Speaker 5: Michelle was doing all.
• 23:26
Speaker 1: I know. You were always that's.
• 23:27
Speaker 2: Where that was like your that was your that was
• 23:30
Speaker 2: your escape from hanging out on the third.
• 23:32
Speaker 1: Floor from the dogs.
• 23:34
Speaker 2: From the dogs, you just run down to editing and
• 23:36
Speaker 2: be like, show me what you got.
• 23:38
Speaker 5: But I also had a post production company in New
• 23:40
Speaker 5: York for when I when I lived in New York
• 23:42
Speaker 5: up in the Brill Building for fifteen years, and so
• 23:46
Speaker 5: post is a very comfortable place for me.
• 23:49
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and uh and I just remember you being
• 23:53
Speaker 1: even Donald and I were always trying to sneak in
• 23:55
Speaker 1: there as well, and you'd be like, I remember, I
• 23:57
Speaker 1: have great memories of you being like, come in here,
• 23:59
Speaker 1: you gotta see that. You guys to.
• 24:02
Speaker 5: Well. People have to understand it was a very insular place.
• 24:06
Speaker 5: There was no place to go. It was Scrubs University
• 24:09
Speaker 5: in this five story abandoned hospital, and.
• 24:13
Speaker 4: You had to be there. You couldn't really go off campus.
• 24:16
Speaker 5: You'd get in trouble because invariably we'd skip a scene
• 24:20
Speaker 5: and would say where's John and he went down to
• 24:24
  Speaker 5: do something?
• 24:25
Speaker 4: To say he can't go down to do anything.
• 24:27
Speaker 1: It's interesting to be on here. When you're on a
• 24:29
Speaker 1: back lot, you can saunter around and you can talk
• 24:32
Speaker 1: to other shows, and you can talk to people that
• 24:34
Speaker 1: have nothing to do with your show. But there was
• 24:36
Speaker 1: something I think great that happened on our show in
• 24:42
Speaker 1: that we were so insular, Like Johnny said in that hospital,
• 24:46
Speaker 1: that it made us extra close because we never went anywhere.
• 24:49
Speaker 1: It wasn't like we just all were always together. And
• 24:53
  Speaker 1: I think.
• 24:55
Speaker 5: Something Billy didn't share, which I've brought to different films
• 24:59
Speaker 5: and TV shows I've produced since, is Billy introduced the
• 25:03
Speaker 5: first or second day of shooting in the cafeteria, which
• 25:06
Speaker 5: is the largest space that one hundred and twenty person
• 25:09
Speaker 5: crew could all congregate.
• 25:11
Speaker 4: He got everybody together.
• 25:13
Speaker 5: And he told them that he was going to put
• 25:15
Speaker 5: a no asshole policy in place, and everybody laughed, and
• 25:20
Speaker 5: you know, sounded kind of stupid, and Billy's the least
• 25:21
Speaker 5: confrontational person on the planet.
• 25:24
Speaker 4: And what he meant was that if you come to work,
• 25:27
Speaker 4: you've got to bring at.
• 25:28
Speaker 5: Least a modicum of respect with you, otherwise don't come.
• 25:33
Speaker 5: And everybody knows just all the way back to the schoolyard,
• 25:36
Speaker 5: how to be nice to each other and how to
• 25:38
Speaker 5: be respectful, and a couple of people subsequently got fired
• 25:42
Speaker 5: for the no asshole policy. It didn't mean you had
• 25:45
Speaker 5: to come to work and walk on pins and needles,
• 25:47
Speaker 5: but you had to come to work and be respectful.
• 25:50
Speaker 4: And I thought that was great, and I do it.
• 25:52
Speaker 5: On my sets now too, and if people don't like it,
• 25:54
Speaker 5: they can get the fuck out.
• 25:55
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's real talk, you know. Since Scrubs, I've been
• 26:01
Speaker 2: a part of cast where you know, everybody's been chill
• 26:05
Speaker 2: and lovely and everything like that, but there's there's that
• 26:08
Speaker 2: one time where you have that one person where you're like,
• 26:10
Speaker 2: oh my god, I wish I was still on Scrubs
• 26:13
Speaker 2: right now so I could freaking sit in the background
• 26:16
Speaker 2: and watch you get fired for being such a fucking
• 26:18
Speaker 2: asshole right now, you know what I mean.
• 26:20
Speaker 4: It's not that complicated, It really isn't.
• 26:23
Speaker 2: It's really easy to be a good person.
• 26:24
Speaker 1: We were really lucky, I think, though. I mean, there's
• 26:26
Speaker 1: so many casts that when you hear about a show
• 26:28
Speaker 1: that you know there's there's a finite number of shows
• 26:31
Speaker 1: that go this long. And we genuinely all really liked
• 26:34
Speaker 1: each other. I mean I always say that when I'm
• 26:36
Speaker 1: do pressed or someone asked me about the show, and
• 26:38
Speaker 1: you know, what was the secret to the magic, and
• 26:40
Speaker 1: one of them is that we genuinely all liked each other.
• 26:43
Speaker 1: We genuinely all rooted for each other. When we would
• 26:46
Speaker 1: see each other at the bar after we wrapped, we
• 26:49
Speaker 1: were like just as excited to see you know, Johnny
• 26:52
Speaker 1: walk in the door. We and that didn't wear off.
• 26:55
Speaker 1: I mean we we we genuinely all loved each other
• 27:00
Speaker 1: company for nine years.
• 27:02
  Speaker 2: Yeah, you know that's you know, that's that's that's actually
• 27:05
Speaker 2: very true. We partied so hard. After sixteen hours of
• 27:10
Speaker 2: hanging out with each other a day, we would still
• 27:14
Speaker 2: be like, yo, Fox and the Hound still has about
• 27:17
Speaker 2: two more hours until it closes, and we'd all congregate
• 27:21
Speaker 2: at Fox and the Hound after spending the whole day
• 27:24
Speaker 2: in some of the night together, man like I would.
• 27:27
Speaker 5: I would go back to my hospital room and go
• 27:29
Speaker 5: to sleep for the night because I couldn't drive out
• 27:31
Speaker 5: to Malibu. And so after after having a couple of beers,
• 27:35
Speaker 5: I went back to the hospital, went to sleep.
• 27:37
Speaker 2: Wow, and they just woke up the next time.
• 27:38
Speaker 1: Johnny tell them about how sometimes you'd come in to
• 27:41
Speaker 1: be traffic at like four in the morning.
• 27:43
Speaker 5: I would I had this thing where I can't be late.
• 27:46
  Speaker 5: It's I just can't. I just I can't organize being late.
• 27:50
Speaker 5: And so my window was I could leave in a
• 27:54
Speaker 5: normal time if I had a call time at six
• 27:57
Speaker 5: or at ten, But if my call time was anywhere
• 27:59
Speaker 5: between six and ten, I would take a six o'clock
• 28:03
Speaker 5: call time and just drive in at five, go to
• 28:06
Speaker 5: sleep for a couple hours, memorize all the shit that
• 28:09
Speaker 5: Billy was writing, and then.
• 28:10
Speaker 4: Be fresh and ready to go. And Plus there was
• 28:13
  Speaker 4: a shower.
• 28:13
Speaker 5: There was a communal shower at the end of our hallway,
• 28:17
Speaker 5: and I used that thing all the time.
• 28:21
  Speaker 2: I've never I think I never showered there. Donald, I
• 28:24
Speaker 2: think maybe once or twice.
• 28:26
Speaker 4: Oh god, I was in there every day.
• 28:28
Speaker 2: Was it was it a good shower?
• 28:29
Speaker 4: Was it a it was hot water? End care.
• 28:31
Speaker 1: That's all right, We're going to go to a break
• 28:35
Speaker 1: and we'll be right book and we're back, and we're back.
• 28:48
Speaker 1: We are back, Donald Dum whenever he would seehim again, Lee,
• 28:52
Speaker 1: whenever Donald does these ins and outs of a commercial,
• 28:54
Speaker 1: he turns into Oprah, We're back.
• 28:58
Speaker 4: I heard him do that with Sarah. I was listening
• 29:01
Speaker 4: to it on the deck and I was dying.
• 29:05
Speaker 2: I could have given you, I could have totally given
• 29:07
Speaker 2: you an Oprah introduction, John seem a.
• 29:10
  Speaker 5: Good night.
• 29:12
  Speaker 1: I was.
• 29:12
Speaker 5: I was thinking about the one oh seven, which is
• 29:15
Speaker 5: interesting that we would be doing one oh seven, which
• 29:19
Speaker 5: when I looked in my composition book, it was actually
• 29:21
Speaker 5: one o six, and it got it got shifted because
• 29:24
Speaker 5: of nine to eleven. Yes, and but before we get
• 29:29
Speaker 5: into the nine to eleven of it all, which has
• 29:30
Speaker 5: a profound impact on this episode.
• 29:33
Speaker 4: When I was looking through.
• 29:34
Speaker 5: My composition book down in the rehearsal space last night,
• 29:37
Speaker 5: when I was looking forward to talking to you guys.
• 29:39
Speaker 4: I noticed that I always in the first if you're lucky.
• 29:43
Speaker 5: Enough to have to write a lot of different composition
• 29:45
Speaker 5: books like we were on Scrubs, I always put a
• 29:48
Speaker 5: mission statement on the first page of what I John
• 29:53
Speaker 5: not I doctor Cox want to do with this thing.
• 29:55
Speaker 5: And I saw that the mission statement on Scrubs was
• 30:00
Speaker 5: to find a place underneath the text for with every
• 30:03
Speaker 5: episode where you can say I love you to Max.
• 30:06
Speaker 5: And I took that seriously because my son Max had
• 30:11
Speaker 5: been born a year or two earlier, and when we
• 30:13
Speaker 5: started in two thousand and one, and Max was born
• 30:17
Speaker 5: with challenges, Max with Roman down syndrome.
• 30:19
Speaker 4: He's doing great now.
• 30:20
Speaker 5: But I decided that Cox underneath it all, so that
• 30:23
Speaker 5: would never became too too drippy, just underneath it. Every
• 30:30
Speaker 5: episode there had to be one spot where I got
• 30:32
Speaker 5: to say I John, not doctor Cox, got to say
• 30:35
Speaker 5: I love you to Max.
• 30:36
Speaker 4: And in this episode it's it's right where.
• 30:39
Speaker 5: When I'm talking to Judy and I say, just because
• 30:42
Speaker 5: a guy has problems, that doesn't mean he doesn't need
• 30:45
Speaker 5: and then there's this long pause and it's because I
• 30:48
Speaker 5: kept getting an apple in my throat, and then he
• 30:50
Speaker 5: says you and I I reminded me that I took
• 30:55
Speaker 5: the thing, so god damn seriously, this mission state that
• 30:59
Speaker 5: I wrote to Max, Yes, and it informs everything that
• 31:03
Speaker 5: Cox does, because I think Zachy knows this. I always
• 31:07
Speaker 5: consider the camera an X ray machine that it can
• 31:10
Speaker 5: see through all the actors bullshit, and we all try
• 31:13
Speaker 5: to bring a walk and a lisp or some eccentricity,
• 31:17
Speaker 5: and unless that's distilled down to a real pure instinct,
• 31:22
Speaker 5: the camera's just like bullshit.
• 31:25
Speaker 4: That's bullshit, and you can see it.
• 31:28
Speaker 5: It's night and day, and so that when an actor
• 31:30
Speaker 5: actually brings a mission statement that demands that he finds
• 31:34
Speaker 5: a place somewhere in the text underneath it, not just
• 31:37
Speaker 5: underneath the text, to say I love you to a
• 31:41
Speaker 5: kid who is just born with challenges that pops that
• 31:45
Speaker 5: the camera goes, Oh, that's his truth.
• 31:48
Speaker 4: He's telling the truth, and that's what pops.
• 31:51
Speaker 1: I love that you said that, Johnny, because I think
• 31:53
Speaker 1: one of the magical things that you did with doctor
• 31:56
Speaker 1: Cox was find a guy who's so tough and find
• 32:01
Speaker 1: a way in every episode to show that his heart,
• 32:04
Speaker 1: that he was doing everything he can to protect everyone
• 32:08
Speaker 1: from protect his heart and from people seeing the amount
• 32:11
Speaker 1: of love. He actually had super super tough cement exterior
• 32:16
Speaker 1: because he was alpha and he was a badass doctor
• 32:19
Speaker 1: and he didn't want people to know. But then you
• 32:21
Speaker 1: would just it was like it was leaking out of him.
• 32:23
Speaker 1: You could you couldn't help it, and you would see
• 32:25
Speaker 1: these little moments where it's like, this guy has the
• 32:27
Speaker 1: biggest heart, he's just keeping it all under wraps.
• 32:30
Speaker 2: That's perfect for this episode that we're talking about right now,
• 32:34
Speaker 2: one oh seven. Carla is the only person in the
• 32:38
Speaker 2: hospital who's known you long enough at this point to
• 32:42
Speaker 2: be able to see through that bullshit. Okay, you're being
• 32:44
Speaker 2: tough on all of these people, but you care. You're
• 32:47
Speaker 2: you're in it just like you know what I mean.
• 32:49
Speaker 2: You're not scared, but you care. And I think that's
• 32:53
Speaker 2: what started you, what started Cox. Correct me if I'm
• 32:57
Speaker 2: wrong to have feelings for her, like, Okay, well, if
• 33:00
Speaker 2: everybody's afraid of me and there's this one person in
• 33:02
Speaker 2: the hospital who's willing to stand up to me, not
• 33:07
Speaker 2: even stand up, but to call me on my bullshit,
• 33:09
Speaker 2: there's a there's a special place in my heart for that.
• 33:12
Speaker 2: And I honestly thought that Carla was gonna choose you know,
• 33:16
Speaker 2: when we were making the show, I thought she was
• 33:18
Speaker 2: gonna choose Cox over Turk. I was kind of hoping
• 33:23
Speaker 2: at that when I was younger, that she would choose
• 33:25
Speaker 2: Cox over Turk so that I'd have more love interests her.
• 33:31
Speaker 1: Oh my god, I can't wait to talk about that
• 33:33
Speaker 1: with Judy when she comes on the show. You know, the.
• 33:36
Speaker 5: Writers, the writers, as Donald was suggesting, out of that
• 33:39
Speaker 5: writer's room came different, nuanced flirtations between Cox and Carla.
• 33:46
Speaker 1: I never noticed that this one is obviously really prevalent,
• 33:49
  Speaker 1: and I hadn't. I hadn't seen this in twenty years,
• 33:50
Speaker 1: but I was like, there's a vibe between those two.
• 33:53
Speaker 2: Oh, it lashed for the next like five six episodes
• 33:55
Speaker 2: and the absolutely yeah it's and then and then Cox
• 33:59
Speaker 2: and Turk have it out and then Cox.
• 34:02
Speaker 1: Do you remember thinking Donald, do you remember thinking like,
• 34:05
Speaker 1: because we didn't know what the fuck the writers were
• 34:06
Speaker 1: gonna do, do you remember thinking like, oh, shit, is Judy
• 34:09
Speaker 1: is Are they gonna write her to go off with him?
• 34:11
Speaker 2: Yeah? I remember thinking that because they had history. That's
• 34:14
Speaker 2: the one thing that the two of them out of
• 34:16
Speaker 2: everyone in the show, and also Ken's character Kelso the
• 34:20
Speaker 2: three of them all have history. But Cox and Carla
• 34:24
Speaker 2: have history. Like I imagine Carla Cox was a very
• 34:28
Speaker 2: young doctor when Carla came in, you know what I mean, Like,
• 34:31
Speaker 2: you know what I mean, she had been there, Carla,
• 34:33
Speaker 2: Carla had been there for a while, and so they
• 34:35
  Speaker 2: knew each other.
• 34:36
Speaker 1: That may they may have hooked up.
• 34:38
Speaker 2: That's what I thought. I thought there was that one time.
• 34:41
Speaker 1: When I was watching today, I was like, these two fucks,
• 34:43
Speaker 1: it looks like the two characters have history. Yeah, absolutely, yeah,
• 34:48
Speaker 1: and that that that we're gonna take it to our
• 34:50
Speaker 1: grave and never speak about this history.
• 34:53
Speaker 4: Right, And I like Donald and like you Zachi.
• 34:57
Speaker 5: I unabashedly loved Judy h and so that was an
• 35:01
Speaker 5: easy thing to groove into.
• 35:03
Speaker 1: You guys had great chemistry. And I was really noticing
• 35:07
Speaker 1: that again we're watching all these with fresh eyes after
• 35:11
Speaker 1: so many years, and I was watching this one, I
• 35:14
Speaker 1: was really I don't know, I just was reminded how
• 35:17
Speaker 1: good those scenes are when it was you two. You
• 35:19
Speaker 1: guys had amazing chemistry together.
• 35:22
Speaker 4: Absolutely, I don't think there's any acting going on.
• 35:24
Speaker 5: Like I say, the camera is an X ray machine
• 35:26
Speaker 5: and it can see through bullshit, and it could see that.
• 35:30
Speaker 4: I love Judy rays on a bachelorfor and I always
• 35:35
  Speaker 4: have that.
• 35:36
Speaker 1: Well, let's get into the elephant in the room, because
• 35:38
Speaker 1: I was actually really nervous to watch this episode. It's
• 35:41
Speaker 1: the first one that I was like, I had a
• 35:43
Speaker 1: pit in my stomach because, as Johnny touched on, this
• 35:46
Speaker 1: was the episode we were shooting when nine to eleven occurred.
• 35:50
Speaker 1: Nine to eleven happened on a Tuesday. Well, we had
• 35:53
Speaker 1: shot a Monday and then nine to eleven occurred, And
• 35:58
Speaker 1: what we should all tell our stories of that day.
• 36:01
Speaker 1: I think I remember I woke up to Howard Stern,
• 36:04
Speaker 1: you know when you're half awake and you're listening, and
• 36:06
Speaker 1: Howard Stern was talking about it, and it got to
• 36:09
Speaker 1: a point where I went, wait what And I leapt
• 36:12
Speaker 1: up out of bed and I went and turned on
• 36:14
Speaker 1: the TV. And I remember thinking, as we all did,
• 36:18
Speaker 1: holy shit, this is what the fuck's happening in the world.
• 36:21
Speaker 1: But also as a young actor who just got on
• 36:23
Speaker 1: a job, I was like, what are we supposed to
• 36:25
Speaker 1: do here? We do we go to work today? Like how?
• 36:27
  Speaker 1: And I remember I still was like, I think I'm
• 36:29
Speaker 1: supposed to still go to work. So I went in
• 36:33
Speaker 1: and I remember Sean Hayes, who was our guest star,
• 36:36
Speaker 1: was there, and he and I sat in my dressing
• 36:39
Speaker 1: room and watched it happen, and shortly that thereafter the
• 36:44
Speaker 1: day was canceled. Do you guys want to tell what
• 36:49
Speaker 1: your memory of that.
• 36:50
Speaker 2: I remember getting a phone call and it was like
• 36:52
Speaker 2: five o'clock in the morning. I remember picking up the
• 36:56
Speaker 2: phone and recognizing the number and cursing the person out
• 37:00
Speaker 2: on the other what the fuck is your problem? I'm working,
• 37:02
Speaker 2: I got work in a couple of hours. How why
• 37:05
Speaker 2: are you calling me this early, you know what I mean?
• 37:08
Speaker 2: And she said, and she over the phone goes, I'm sorry, shit, sorry,
• 37:14
Speaker 2: I just wanted to tell you that a plane crashed
• 37:16
Speaker 2: into the World Trade Center. And I was like, oh shit,
• 37:18
Speaker 2: I'm sorry, whoa what? What? Wait? What? What? And I
• 37:21
Speaker 2: ran to the television and I turned it on, and
• 37:24
Speaker 2: like everybody else in America, I was stuck watching television
• 37:30
Speaker 2: for and then Randall finally called him, was like, we're
• 37:33
Speaker 2: not coming into work, you know, but today the day
• 37:36
Speaker 2: is canceled. You don't have to come in. But I
• 37:38
Speaker 2: remember just sitting in front of the television very much
• 37:41
Speaker 2: like I am right now, you know what I mean.
• 37:42
Speaker 2: I feel like I wake up every morning and my
• 37:45
Speaker 2: and the minute I wake up, I turn on the
• 37:47
Speaker 2: news to check to see how many people have COVID nineteen,
• 37:52
Speaker 2: how many people we lost because of COVID nineteen, and
• 37:55
Speaker 2: what the plan is to figure out how we're going
• 37:58
Speaker 2: to get rid of COVID nineteen, you know what I mean?
• 38:00
Speaker 2: And I, you know, very for the next week. I
• 38:02
Speaker 2: remember that was all that I did was I just
• 38:05
Speaker 2: watched the news to see what the heck is America
• 38:08
Speaker 2: going to do next?
• 38:10
Speaker 1: How about you Johnny, were you called in that day?
• 38:13
Speaker 4: Yeah, I went back and looked it up last night.
• 38:14
Speaker 5: So the North Tower got hit at five forty five am,
• 38:17
Speaker 5: and I would have left about ten minutes after that
• 38:22
Speaker 5: to get there, and so I saw the first well
• 38:26
Speaker 5: they didn't really show the first but it looked like
• 38:27
Speaker 5: a plane went into the first building.
• 38:29
Speaker 4: And then I had to go.
• 38:30
Speaker 5: And so the South Tower got hit about twenty two
• 38:34
Speaker 5: minutes later at six oh three our time, nine oh
• 38:37
Speaker 5: three New York time, and so I would have been
• 38:39
Speaker 5: listening to it on the news. But all of this
• 38:41
Speaker 5: to me, there's something called a mental model, and it's
• 38:44
Speaker 5: how you perceive things. In my mental model, it was
• 38:48
Speaker 5: it was like the plane that hit the Empire State
• 38:50
Speaker 5: Building before we were born. It was a prop plane
• 38:53
Speaker 5: that went into the Empire State Building and nothing really happened,
• 38:56
  Speaker 5: not nothing.
• 38:56
Speaker 4: I'm sure some people died and it was horrible, but.
• 38:59
Speaker 5: It sounded like that, and so that's how I was
• 39:02
  Speaker 5: driving into Burbank.
• 39:05
Speaker 4: And when I got there that clearly wasn't the case.
• 39:09
Speaker 5: And then my brother worked on the sixty second floor
• 39:12
Speaker 5: of the South Tower, and so I kept trying to
• 39:16
Speaker 5: call them so and pretty early on it became clear
• 39:21
Speaker 5: that nobody was going to get through on any lines,
• 39:24
Speaker 5: on cell lines or landlines because those everything disconnected on
• 39:28
Speaker 5: those towers, and so.
• 39:29
Speaker 4: I couldn't get through to my brother.
• 39:30
Speaker 5: And this is when an actor's imagination is a curse,
• 39:34
  Speaker 5: not a blessing.
• 39:34
Speaker 4: You only imagine horrible things.
• 39:37
Speaker 5: And it turns out in those eighteen twenty minutes, those
• 39:41
Speaker 5: intervening times between the North Tower getting hit and the
• 39:43
Speaker 5: South tower getting hit on March Trading Desk, they all
• 39:48
Speaker 5: had been there when they shake from Newark, New Jersey,
• 39:51
Speaker 5: had set off that bomb in the van in the
• 39:53
Speaker 5: basement ten years earlier. So everyone in a March's Trading
• 39:57
Speaker 5: desk got up when the the first building got hit
• 40:03
Speaker 5: and they started to make their way down the stairs.
• 40:05
Speaker 5: But it was such a cluster flock going down the
• 40:07
Speaker 5: stairs in those eighteen minutes from the sixty second floor down,
• 40:11
Speaker 5: they only made it about twenty stories. Everybody from like
• 40:15
Speaker 5: seventy two up died, and so Mark got a concussion
• 40:19
Speaker 5: going down the stairs.
• 40:20
  Speaker 4: I don't know how.
• 40:21
Speaker 5: He got really disoriented, and by the time he got
• 40:23
Speaker 5: out of the building, he wandered up the FDR Drive
• 40:26
Speaker 5: to East Harlem, and so he was missing for about
• 40:31
Speaker 5: twelve hours, and so it was.
• 40:35
Speaker 2: Made all the way to Harlem.
• 40:38
Speaker 1: Yes, holy cow, was he just in shock, Johnny, and he.
• 40:40
Speaker 4: Walked that far? Yes, wow.
• 40:43
Speaker 5: And so I sat in the hospital for all that time,
• 40:46
Speaker 5: and then I tried his wife, who lived out in Short.
• 40:49
Speaker 4: Hills, New Jersey at the time.
• 40:50
Speaker 5: She only had an outgoing message on her machine saying, Mark,
• 40:56
  Speaker 5: I know you're okay. I've gone over to the Smith's
• 41:00
Speaker 5: house and we're waiting for your call there. Well, no
• 41:03
Speaker 5: calls came for about twelve hours, and so I sat
• 41:06
Speaker 5: in the dressing room thinking horrible things. And then obviously
• 41:10
Speaker 5: the buildings came down shortly after that, and what almost
• 41:14
Speaker 5: four thousand Americans died, and so that was a that's
• 41:18
Speaker 5: the backdrop for us shooting this episode. Yeah, it's kind
• 41:22
Speaker 5: of miraculous that the episode even makes any sense that
• 41:27
Speaker 5: because of what some of some people were carrying into
• 41:30
  Speaker 5: the frame.
• 41:31
  Speaker 4: I agree.
• 41:32
  Speaker 1: I think it's a weird episode, and I don't know
• 41:35
Speaker 1: if I'm bringing my own anxiety of of of the
• 41:38
Speaker 1: time to it as I watch it now, But I'm
• 41:40
Speaker 1: also going we were all not present for these however
• 41:44
Speaker 1: many days, one hundred percent right, absolutely and I felt like,
• 41:47
Speaker 1: especially when you look at the first episode Chunk that
• 41:50
Speaker 1: we've just watched, which you're like, holy shit, look at
• 41:52
Speaker 1: this show. Look at their fire on our all cylinders.
• 41:54
Speaker 1: This is the first one where I go, oh, we
• 41:56
Speaker 1: all understandably, obviously we all look a little based out
• 42:00
  Speaker 1: to me.
• 42:02
  Speaker 5: That's when I watched it last night. I I mean,
• 42:05
Speaker 5: there's obviously a lot of funny stuff in it that
• 42:07
Speaker 5: I wrote down that made me laugh, but it and again,
• 42:11
Speaker 5: like you, Zachi, I can't tell if it's me imposing
• 42:15
Speaker 5: my John McGinley onto what Billy Lawrence created for those
• 42:19
Speaker 5: twenty one minutes. But you just said disconnected it. It
• 42:24
Speaker 5: seemed a little disconnected to me.
• 42:26
Speaker 2: This one does. Yes, absolutely, but how could it not be? Right?
• 42:30
  Speaker 1: Yeah? Right, yeah.
• 42:32
Speaker 5: If mcginley's brother, If mcginley's brother just got out of
• 42:35
Speaker 5: the what was the South Tower and was missing for
• 42:38
Speaker 5: a day, what are you, superman? Of course you're going
• 42:42
Speaker 5: to carry that in front of the lens.
• 42:43
Speaker 1: Now, do you guys remember we took that Tuesday off?
• 42:46
Speaker 1: Did we work the next day or take that day
• 42:48
  Speaker 1: off as well?
• 42:49
Speaker 4: I think we took Wednesday off and we worked Thursday.
• 42:52
Speaker 1: Yeah, Now I do remember this. I remember the very
• 42:54
Speaker 1: first thing we came back, believe it or not, was
• 42:57
Speaker 1: that fucking dog show fantasy. So I remember feeling horribly
• 43:02
Speaker 1: guilty that we should a should we even be working.
• 43:05
Speaker 1: But I'm under a contract and I'm an actor and
• 43:08
Speaker 1: I'm not going to ruffle anybody's feathers. But it should
• 43:11
Speaker 1: be we be working. But then' like, yes, everyone's back
• 43:14
Speaker 1: to work. Here we go, and I was like, Okay,
• 43:15
Speaker 1: what are we shooting. I can do this. We're gonna
• 43:18
  Speaker 1: do a fantasy where you're a dog at a dog
• 43:20
Speaker 1: show and Johnny c is going to feel your balls.
• 43:26
Speaker 1: And I was like, the first thing up, Johnny, do
• 43:28
Speaker 1: you remember that? It was the first thing up? It
• 43:30
Speaker 1: must have been Thursday morning, was me.
• 43:32
Speaker 4: I remember now you watch it. I remember it. God,
• 43:35
Speaker 4: I remember that I wrote down.
• 43:37
Speaker 5: I wrote down that during the dog show flashback, I
• 43:39
Speaker 5: had decided to make you both really uncomfortable. And I
• 43:42
Speaker 5: think it was because I was really uncomfortable. So I
• 43:46
Speaker 5: love actors, and I would never do anything to ever
• 43:48
Speaker 5: ever hurt an actor.
• 43:49
Speaker 4: Especially when it comes to physical contact.
• 43:52
Speaker 5: And I think I was just I was not appropriately
• 43:55
Speaker 5: gentle with you guys.
• 43:57
Speaker 4: I like took your ear, Zachie.
• 43:58
Speaker 5: And you can see, and I took your fucking mouth
• 44:00
Speaker 5: and I opened it up, and I told I took
• 44:02
Speaker 5: Sean's ear, and I was I was uncharacteristically for me
• 44:06
Speaker 5: as an actor, not cos but I love actors so much.
• 44:09
Speaker 4: I would never ever do anything to hurt them, and
• 44:13
Speaker 4: I would think I was. I was not appropriate with
• 44:16
Speaker 4: you two guys on that. I was very rough.
• 44:18
Speaker 1: I remember being man handled. Thank you for pantomiming the
• 44:22
Speaker 1: testicle part, though, because I think that would have been
• 44:24
Speaker 1: a little too rough on on me.
• 44:26
Speaker 4: You know, I'm sure at some point I put my
• 44:29
Speaker 4: fist up your reck them.
• 44:30
Speaker 1: I don't think so, at least not in this episode.
• 44:32
Speaker 1: That may have been in later. I think you did
• 44:34
Speaker 1: wear me like a hand puppet, but it was in
• 44:36
  Speaker 1: episode four.
• 44:38
Speaker 4: I think during the dog show thingy I may have
• 44:40
  Speaker 4: engaged you.
• 44:42
  Speaker 2: Well.
• 44:43
Speaker 1: We were joking with Bill about how the crazy sound
• 44:46
Speaker 1: effects would would would were slowly phased out. I don't know,
• 44:49
Speaker 1: maybe because you were all off in this episode. But
• 44:51
Speaker 1: this episode has so many ridiculous side effects, so many,
• 44:55
Speaker 1: and there's that there's like a Santa Sleigh jingle bell
• 44:59
Speaker 1: noise when you grab my balls that's like the choice
• 45:01
Speaker 1: that was made somewhere in the in sound effects editing.
• 45:07
Speaker 1: They were like, Okay, what's the noise for Johnny grabbing
• 45:11
Speaker 1: JD's balls? Guys, how about a Santa Slave.
• 45:15
  Speaker 2: Jingle bell o?
• 45:17
Speaker 4: You know what? I you know what I thought was
• 45:18
  Speaker 4: really funny.
• 45:19
Speaker 5: Zactly when you and Kenny are up on the roof
• 45:22
Speaker 5: and he goes to he does kind of a fake
• 45:24
Speaker 5: attacking you up on the roof. Yeah, And whether or
• 45:29
Speaker 5: not you're just a great actor or if it was
• 45:32
Speaker 5: really weird, it looked really weird.
• 45:36
Speaker 1: It's a weird scene, by the way, can I just
• 45:39
  Speaker 1: I don't understand?
• 45:40
Speaker 2: He calls goes you know what your problem is? Yeah,
• 45:43
Speaker 2: is that you're a pansy. It's just straight up.
• 45:46
Speaker 1: It's a weird scene. And I was waiting for something
• 45:48
Speaker 1: to happen. I remember there was a fantasy where I
• 45:50
Speaker 1: where I fell off a roof and there was a
• 45:52
Speaker 1: stunt man who did a big jump, and I thought, oh,
• 45:53
Speaker 1: is that this But it doesn't really go anywhere, and
• 45:56
Speaker 1: Ken's just up there smoking a pipe. He calls me
• 45:59
Speaker 1: a pansy and then almost throws me off the roof,
• 46:02
Speaker 1: like legit, and then like that's the scene.
• 46:05
Speaker 5: That's it, And and a couple scenes before that at
• 46:10
Speaker 5: Mine forty four when when he goes keep shooting you the.
• 46:14
  Speaker 4: He he gumps.
• 46:15
Speaker 5: Over and gives you a hug, and then Kenny wraps
• 46:18
  Speaker 5: his leg around.
• 46:19
  Speaker 1: I think that's a fantasy, Johnny, I will I. I
• 46:21
Speaker 1: didn't know what the fuck was happening there either, And
• 46:23
Speaker 1: then there's a white flash out of it. I think
• 46:25
  Speaker 1: that's JD's fantasy because.
• 46:26
  Speaker 4: Why why would.
• 46:30
Speaker 1: He mounted me? Well, I just want to say, I
• 46:33
  Speaker 1: think that's I wrote down that. I think that's the
• 46:35
Speaker 1: only time in nine years that Ken Jenkins ever mounted me.
• 46:41
Speaker 2: Can we talk? Can we talk about jerking off real quick?
• 46:44
Speaker 1: Yeah? A big as a part of the show or
• 46:46
Speaker 1: just in your own life?
• 46:47
Speaker 2: Just yeah, we could talk about it both. Let's talk
• 46:50
Speaker 2: about both. How about that?
• 46:51
  Speaker 1: Okay? Good?
• 46:52
Speaker 2: Okay. So here's here's here's the one thing I get that.
• 46:56
Speaker 2: First of all, we have two callbacks to mash We
• 46:58
Speaker 2: have you as a kid playing with your brother, and
• 47:02
Speaker 2: this scene, the whole joke off scene is actually a
• 47:05
Speaker 2: scene from Mesh the movie, if I'm correct, where they
• 47:10
Speaker 2: trick somebody to go into the bathroom and drink off
• 47:15
Speaker 2: when did jerking off become a bad thing that you
• 47:17
Speaker 2: got to be embarrassed about?
• 47:19
Speaker 1: Well, but you're not. You're not supposed to jerk off
• 47:21
Speaker 1: at work. Donald write that down as a surgeon.
• 47:26
Speaker 2: Got it? So wait, hold up, Okay, So it's so
• 47:29
Speaker 2: we're clear. It's okay to masturbate, but once you do
• 47:32
Speaker 2: it at work, you've crossed the line.
• 47:34
Speaker 1: Yes, I think this could be a service announcement. This
• 47:37
Speaker 1: could be a public service announcement for people all over
• 47:39
Speaker 1: the world. Don't masturbate a work.
• 47:43
Speaker 2: It's crossing the line.
• 47:44
Speaker 1: The more you know, and Dan, you can put in
• 47:46
Speaker 1: a little more, you know, sound effects there.
• 47:51
  Speaker 4: I saw something.
• 47:53
Speaker 5: I saw something when Donald and I get to do
• 47:55
Speaker 5: the scene that comes before this, when we're in the
• 48:00
Speaker 5: cafeteria and I tell.
• 48:01
Speaker 4: You to go to go And what's the town I
• 48:04
Speaker 4: tell you to go to.
• 48:05
Speaker 2: Like spank Town or something like something like that.
• 48:07
Speaker 4: I forgot, but what I Palmville.
• 48:12
Speaker 5: And I have a pet peeve with actors who wait
• 48:17
Speaker 5: until they swallow their food to say a line. And
• 48:21
Speaker 5: if you notice in that thing, I always take the
• 48:24
Speaker 5: soup to hear. It doesn't go in.
• 48:26
Speaker 2: No, it never does, don't I.
• 48:30
Speaker 1: Never eat by the way, it's disgusting. Whenever there's you
• 48:34
Speaker 1: will if you ever see me eating in a in
• 48:36
  Speaker 1: anything I've ever done, it's it's rare. I always my
• 48:39
Speaker 1: character is always done because I don't want to deal
• 48:41
Speaker 1: with all the continuity and eating.
• 48:44
Speaker 2: Okay, people are starting to notice that actors aren't eating
• 48:47
Speaker 2: on television shows or in movies now. Before before people
• 48:52
Speaker 2: didn't necessarily notice. That's something that I think people are
• 48:55
Speaker 2: starting to notice now. Other than Brad Pitt, no one eats.
• 48:59
Speaker 1: No, whenever I see someone legit eating, Like whenever I
• 49:03
Speaker 1: see someone I watch a scene and someone's like eating,
• 49:05
Speaker 1: I'm like, oh my god, they ate like that for
• 49:07
Speaker 1: probably four hours. Not correct, My character's always done.
• 49:11
Speaker 5: Always, But also if it gets in the way of
• 49:14
Speaker 5: the actor saying the line and we have to wait
• 49:16
Speaker 5: for those of us in a big family, nobody.
• 49:18
Speaker 4: Waits to talk until they swallow.
• 49:20
Speaker 5: There's food in their mouth, they just segregate it over
• 49:23
Speaker 5: into kind of a chipmunk cheek and then they just
• 49:26
Speaker 5: fire out the words.
• 49:27
Speaker 4: Otherwise you'll lose the floor at the dinner table.
• 49:30
Speaker 1: Did you guys have go to meals that you know
• 49:32
Speaker 1: they were always There are lots of scenes where were
• 49:33
Speaker 1: supposed to have food in front of us? Did you guys
• 49:35
Speaker 1: have a go to thing you would ask to be
• 49:36
Speaker 1: in front of you steak soup?
• 49:38
Speaker 4: Steak me soup because you never have to eat it.
• 49:42
Speaker 1: Yeah, I just I'm gonna steal that, Johnny, because I'm
• 49:45
Speaker 1: always have a plate of I would always tell them,
• 49:47
Speaker 1: can you make it look like I'm done and like
• 49:49
  Speaker 1: you know?
• 49:49
Speaker 4: And no, because with soup you can just the spoon.
• 49:53
Speaker 5: The prop of the spoon is it's indefatigable, it's perfect.
• 49:58
Speaker 5: It can you can and plush you can quote it
• 50:00
Speaker 5: at somebody, you can. It's the prop of the spoon.
• 50:04
Speaker 5: You use the spoon.
• 50:05
Speaker 2: I always went for steak because I could eat steak forever.
• 50:09
Speaker 2: I could eat steak like nobody's business.
• 50:12
Speaker 1: So you were eating, you were, you were an eater.
• 50:14
Speaker 2: No, but if I did have like there was that
• 50:16
Speaker 2: one episode where I did have to eat uh and
• 50:19
Speaker 2: because Turk gets really bad heartburn. And it's when UH
• 50:23
Speaker 2: had the lockleer was on the show and John c
• 50:26
Speaker 2: myself and head a lockleer at some benefit and Carl
• 50:31
Speaker 2: is supposed to meet us there and she never shows
• 50:33
Speaker 2: up and I wind up eating a bunch of steak
• 50:36
Speaker 2: and uh end up in the hospital with really bad heartburn.
• 50:42
Speaker 2: Uh So I always went. I always went for steak
• 50:46
Speaker 2: because I could eat it. It tastes good, it's easy to season,
• 50:48
Speaker 2: throw some salt on it, you know what I mean,
• 50:51
  Speaker 2: It's it's good to go.
• 50:53
Speaker 5: I thought there were a couple of different times in
• 50:55
Speaker 5: this episode where despite everything the ensemble one where you
• 51:01
Speaker 5: is where you pass the torch to Sean, and Sean
• 51:04
Speaker 5: just fits right into the style of the piece, like
• 51:07
Speaker 5: he just takes the torch, we pan with you out
• 51:10
Speaker 5: a frame, we come back, Sean's put the torch down
• 51:13
Speaker 5: and you guys just keep doing your thing.
• 51:14
Speaker 1: That was clever. I was cleverly directed. And and I
• 51:17
Speaker 1: want to say, it's a rare moment where that's obviously
• 51:20
Speaker 1: a fantasy and there was no flash in out of it.
• 51:23
Speaker 1: I was clocking that because you know, Bill always delineated
• 51:26
Speaker 1: a fantasy with a with a little white flash and
• 51:28
Speaker 1: that noise. And this is one of those rare times
• 51:32
Speaker 1: where the torch is a character, a prop character in
• 51:36
Speaker 1: the piece and there's no it's both times it comes in,
• 51:39
Speaker 1: it's just handed off and not really discussed.
• 51:42
Speaker 5: I mean's also What's also interesting with Sean is Sean's introduction,
• 51:46
Speaker 5: which would become a classic Scrubs introduction, especially with beautiful
• 51:50
Speaker 5: females with wind and slow mow entrances. As they walk
• 51:54
Speaker 5: down a hall, Sean gets to come in on top
• 51:56
Speaker 5: of a gurney saving someone's life and it's just glorious.
• 52:01
Speaker 2: Dude, I wrote that down, Johnny. I'm glad you brought
• 52:03
Speaker 2: that up because I wrote that down. I think that
• 52:05
Speaker 2: might be the best entrance other than other than.
• 52:09
  Speaker 1: Dick van Dyke.
• 52:10
Speaker 2: Dick van Dyke's entrance is pretty amazing too, but that
• 52:13
Speaker 2: might be one of the best entrances for male in
• 52:16
  Speaker 2: Scrubs history.
• 52:18
Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Joelle, do we need to go a
• 52:20
Speaker 1: break or we take to go to these lovely people?
• 52:24
Speaker 1: All right, We're gonna go take another break and we
• 52:27
Speaker 1: come back. We have questions from some fans that are
• 52:30
Speaker 1: calling in, and they're gonna have an amazing question, I'm sure,
• 52:33
Speaker 1: probably for the legendary JOHNNYE.
• 52:35
  Speaker 4: McGinley.
• 52:35
Speaker 2: I'll give you a hint. Her name's Ashley. As we
• 52:47
Speaker 2: have a caller, Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the show.
• 52:52
Speaker 2: Ashley Cooper, horrow it.
• 52:55
Speaker 1: And friend, do you know much money? Do you know
• 52:58
Speaker 1: how much money it cost us to get Orah to
• 53:00
Speaker 1: do all these introductions of our guests. It's fortune, Hi, guys,
• 53:05
Speaker 1: Why did why did Joelle imply that there was something
• 53:09
Speaker 1: unique and special about you? Guys? So I wrote in
• 53:13
Speaker 1: earlier this week, I was looking if I could figure
• 53:16
Speaker 1: out a way for you to to do like a
• 53:18
Speaker 1: birthday shout out. This is my husband, Alexander.
• 53:22
Speaker 3: Alexander he is our position and absolutely loves your show.
• 53:29
  Speaker 2: What's up, man?
• 53:29
  Speaker 1: How's a deal?
• 53:31
  Speaker 4: Now? Now?
• 53:31
  Speaker 1: Donald change? Now?
• 53:32
  Speaker 2: Donald showed?
• 53:33
Speaker 1: Now Donald changed? Donald? Respectful?
• 53:36
Speaker 2: Boys, let me show that respect. What is good?
• 53:41
Speaker 6: Not too load? Do this right before work? I'm about
• 53:43
Speaker 6: to head out of here about an hour.
• 53:45
Speaker 1: Oh man, Wow, you're the real deal.
• 53:47
Speaker 2: Very much. Thank you so much, very very much for
• 53:50
Speaker 2: for calling in. Uh who's going to ask the question?
• 53:54
  Speaker 2: He is awesome.
• 53:55
Speaker 7: This is my birthday, birthday, to your happy birthday, to
• 54:03
  Speaker 7: your happy birthday.
• 54:07
Speaker 5: We called it Jamie Birthday.
• 54:12
Speaker 2: He's a grown man, as you know. He works in
• 54:16
Speaker 2: the hospital. Not like us. We were fake doctors on
• 54:23
  Speaker 2: a TV show.
• 54:24
Speaker 1: Yes, bringing it Home?
• 54:26
  Speaker 5: Yes?
• 54:28
Speaker 1: So wait did you not know about this? Is this
• 54:30
  Speaker 1: a surprise?
• 54:31
Speaker 6: I kept it a surprise for maybe for seconds, and you.
• 54:37
Speaker 2: Should have kept it a surprise until you guys zoomed in.
• 54:41
Speaker 2: How cool would that been? But then you never know,
• 54:43
Speaker 2: you would have been like, who are these guys? Who
• 54:45
Speaker 2: are these guys? Right? Who are these guys?
• 54:47
Speaker 1: All right? Go ahead, guys, go ahead.
• 54:49
  Speaker 4: Sure.
• 54:49
Speaker 6: So I guess the biggest question is I guess what
• 54:52
Speaker 6: it came down to is I watched a lot of
• 54:53
Speaker 6: the different Pete medical shows, and I found that throughout
• 54:56
Speaker 6: my training so far, and I was attending so far
• 54:59
Speaker 6: that the show of Scrub actually portrays how hospital life
• 55:04
Speaker 6: really works the most accurate of all the medical shows,
• 55:07
Speaker 6: despite it being primarily a comedy. Was that something that
• 55:10
Speaker 6: Bill purposely did? Was that something that the staff tried
• 55:13
Speaker 6: to incorporate? Because I was, I mean, I listened to
• 55:16
Speaker 6: the first one and tell like, Donald really good around
• 55:18
  Speaker 6: the hospital?
• 55:19
  Speaker 2: No, I was? I was, I was, You're absolutely right.
• 55:22
Speaker 2: I was so afraid to go into the hospital at
• 55:24
Speaker 2: that point. Listen. Since then, I've you know, I've developed
• 55:28
  Speaker 2: a a listen if something's wrong or if I feel
• 55:31
Speaker 2: like something's wrong, I'm going right to my primary and
• 55:34
Speaker 2: we're going to talk about it. Before that, though, I
• 55:37
Speaker 2: was just like every other person you know in the
• 55:39
Speaker 2: African American community. We have a stigma when it comes
• 55:43
Speaker 2: to doctors. We're very afraid of the bad news. And
• 55:47
Speaker 2: you think I'm joking. But this is the honest to
• 55:49
  Speaker 2: goodness truth and.
• 55:52
  Speaker 4: Very right.
• 55:52
Speaker 2: I've done. I've done PSA after PSA about talking, you know,
• 55:56
Speaker 2: talking about you know, going and getting your numbers known.
• 55:59
Speaker 2: Go get your lesterol, get your your BMI, your your
• 56:04
Speaker 2: blood pressure, your blood sugar.
• 56:06
Speaker 1: I love You're trying to listen them to an er doc.
• 56:11
Speaker 2: I'm just trying to listen.
• 56:12
Speaker 1: He was like, he was like blue close. You're like, no, no, no,
• 56:14
Speaker 1: there's four, there's uh anyway, But Johnny, Johnny, why don't
• 56:20
Speaker 1: you answer because you're the special guest about about his question.
• 56:24
Speaker 5: I had spent the first three weeks of my son's
• 56:27
Speaker 5: life a couple of years earlier in the neonatal intensive
• 56:29
Speaker 5: care unit, and I carried most of that was that
• 56:33
Speaker 5: functioned largely is all the homework I ever needed for
• 56:38
Speaker 5: medical replication, trying to do medical stuff. And uh Max
• 56:45
Speaker 5: had different challenges born with down in rome, and he
• 56:47
Speaker 5: had microscopicals and hard also we had infatel seizures, We
• 56:51
Speaker 5: had all sorts of different challenges. But if you spend
• 56:54
Speaker 5: if you're the Akron, import is the nick you, if
• 56:56
Speaker 5: you spent three or four weeks in the nick you,
• 57:00
Speaker 5: you should get enough of that on you to be
• 57:02
Speaker 5: able to tell the.
• 57:03
Speaker 4: Truth in front of the lens.
• 57:04
Speaker 5: And so that that's largely what I was trying to
• 57:06
Speaker 5: honor when we were doing that Medical scripts. I think
• 57:10
Speaker 5: Bill was relationship stuff.
• 57:12
Speaker 1: I think Bill also has said, you know, we knew
• 57:16
Speaker 1: we were going to be silly, and we knew we
• 57:18
Speaker 1: were gonna have these crazy fantasies, and we knew in
• 57:20
Speaker 1: a lot in a lot of ways, it was gonna
• 57:21
Speaker 1: be a comedy. So he wanted the baseline. He wanted
• 57:24
Speaker 1: to drop in for all the medicine to be as
• 57:27
  Speaker 1: accurate as possible.
• 57:28
Speaker 2: And and that was also something that John Dorris wanted
• 57:34
Speaker 2: to the real JD wanted. He was like, listen, you
• 57:37
Speaker 2: can make fun of all of the things we did
• 57:39
Speaker 2: that I did in college and stuff like that, but
• 57:42
Speaker 2: it has to be grounded at the end of the day.
• 57:44
Speaker 2: Don't make a fool of us, you know what I mean.
• 57:46
Speaker 2: Make sure that that there's truth behind everything as well.
• 57:50
Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that that that's one of the reason works.
• 57:52
Speaker 1: And I think the American Medical Association has said, which
• 57:55
Speaker 1: we always thought was bizarre, but that they said that
• 57:58
Speaker 1: this was the most medical accurate of all the medical shows.
• 58:03
Speaker 1: So we always took that as a badge of honor.
• 58:05
Speaker 1: And I think Bill was really, really, really proud of that.
• 58:07
Speaker 1: He said, we can be as silly as we want
• 58:09
Speaker 1: to be when we get into the medicine. It's all
• 58:10
Speaker 1: gonna be gonna be real.
• 58:12
Speaker 2: And also, yeah, once you get that, once you get
• 58:14
Speaker 2: that tag, where you got where someone says to you,
• 58:16
Speaker 2: you guys are the most medically accurate. You don't ever
• 58:19
Speaker 2: want to fall off that that vandwagon. You want to
• 58:22
Speaker 2: stay You want to stay on that. You want to
• 58:24
Speaker 2: make sure that every story, at least in the first
• 58:26
Speaker 2: at least in the first eight seasons. I don't know
• 58:28
Speaker 2: about season nine, but in the first eight seasons we
• 58:31
Speaker 2: made sure to stick to the actual script to keep
• 58:37
Speaker 2: it real. As they say, oh, is that an expression?
• 58:41
Speaker 2: I hear the kids say that nowadays. Do you have
• 58:45
  Speaker 2: another question?
• 58:46
Speaker 6: Yeah, go ahead, So that'll be the I guess the more, hey,
• 58:50
Speaker 6: are they more difficult? Question easier? One is what keepsicks?
• 58:54
Speaker 6: Did you guys get so rowdy. Didn't get taken with
• 58:56
Speaker 6: you guys. But what about like the TK necklaces or
• 58:58
  Speaker 6: anything like that.
• 59:00
  Speaker 5: I'm not a I'm not a souvenir guy, so I
• 59:02
Speaker 5: don't ever I should have taken stuff from a lot
• 59:05
  Speaker 5: of sets.
• 59:05
Speaker 4: But it's not. I always thought it was bad luck.
• 59:09
Speaker 2: You don't know any scrubs whatsoever.
• 59:12
Speaker 1: I don't have any scrubs in my house.
• 59:13
  Speaker 5: I think it's a I think it's a jink.
• 59:15
Speaker 2: What about what about the kicks, because Nike sent us
• 59:18
Speaker 2: a bunch of kicks when we were making that show.
• 59:21
  Speaker 1: That's different.
• 59:26
Speaker 5: Swag swags are different than top.
• 59:29
  Speaker 4: Bili.
• 59:32
  Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't have any. I have the slate. I
• 59:33
Speaker 1: have the slates from episodes I directed. You know the
• 59:36
Speaker 1: thing we clap in front of the lens.
• 59:37
  Speaker 4: You're directing them.
• 59:38
Speaker 1: Yeah, And then I have the I have the antlers
• 59:40
Speaker 1: from when we did the pilot, when I was a
• 59:42
Speaker 1: deer in headlights. Donald is showing you his his.
• 59:45
Speaker 2: My scrub sneakers, my hundredth episode sneakers.
• 59:48
Speaker 1: Look how warn and ruined they are.
• 59:50
Speaker 2: I've rocked these for like a year.
• 59:52
Speaker 1: I put mine on a shelf and saved them and
• 59:54
Speaker 1: they're mint and Donald's are all fucked up.
• 59:56
Speaker 2: I'm so proud of these.
• 59:57
Speaker 5: And look, that's the best rewraps on the planet for
• 1:00:02
  Speaker 5: for Christmas.
• 1:00:03
Speaker 1: You guys. Well, one thing that's funny about this podcast
• 1:00:05
Speaker 1: on the Zoom Call is that whenever Donald wants to
• 1:00:08
Speaker 1: reference a piece of clothing, he doesn't have to move
• 1:00:10
Speaker 1: from his seat. He just reaches out of frame and
• 1:00:12
  Speaker 1: pulls it in.
• 1:00:16
Speaker 2: Well, we are in my closet.
• 1:00:17
Speaker 1: No, it's just funny, Like you've done that a few
• 1:00:19
Speaker 1: times now. It's not even like you have to stand.
• 1:00:21
Speaker 1: You just reach out a frame and pull out.
• 1:00:23
Speaker 2: Well, I'm on my side. I I'm in, like I'm in,
• 1:00:25
Speaker 2: Like I'm on my side. So like all of this
• 1:00:27
Speaker 2: is me, this is my wife's stuff. So if I really,
• 1:00:30
Speaker 2: I'm never I was. You know, what I was thinking
• 1:00:32
Speaker 2: about doing was turning it all around and doing it
• 1:00:34
Speaker 2: from a different angle. But I think I just confuse everyone.
• 1:00:36
Speaker 1: No, I love this. I will forever remember this time
• 1:00:39
Speaker 1: of doing this podcast and staring at you like it
• 1:00:42
Speaker 1: looks like you're sitting on the ground in your closet.
• 1:00:50
Speaker 2: You know, it's not every day that we have a
• 1:00:52
Speaker 2: real live doctor on the show. Right, and so this
• 1:00:56
Speaker 2: is this is this is a pretty special thing. If
• 1:01:00
Speaker 2: you have any other questions, feel free to ask us.
• 1:01:02
Speaker 1: Well, Donald's giving you the rare third question you can have.
• 1:01:05
  Speaker 1: It's never been bestowed. It's because you're a real doctor.
• 1:01:08
Speaker 1: It's never been bestowed upon anyone.
• 1:01:10
Speaker 2: In all seven episodes of Fake Doctors, Real Friends.
• 1:01:14
Speaker 6: All Right, what was the most emotionally difficult episode that
• 1:01:17
  Speaker 6: you guys did?
• 1:01:18
Speaker 1: Yes, good, Johnny, what's up?
• 1:01:21
Speaker 5: I thought this one would have to be right up there,
• 1:01:25
Speaker 5: just getting through this one and trying to hew to
• 1:01:29
Speaker 5: the style of the piece and not fall too deep
• 1:01:33
Speaker 5: deep end of an eleven of it all, it was
• 1:01:35
  Speaker 5: it was impossible.
• 1:01:37
Speaker 1: But Johnny, we have to give a nod to one
• 1:01:39
Speaker 1: of the best episodes ever where you were just incredibly
• 1:01:42
Speaker 1: good in that Brendan Frasier dying episode.
• 1:01:47
Speaker 5: Yeah, but that that we got to act, That was acting.
• 1:01:50
Speaker 4: This was this was real life.
• 1:01:51
Speaker 5: Just killed four thousand people, and and it was I
• 1:01:54
Speaker 5: thought it was almost impossible to get.
• 1:01:56
  Speaker 4: Through this episode.
• 1:01:57
Speaker 5: And when I watched it and it actually just made
• 1:01:59
Speaker 5: sense that it made sense. Yeah, it's good.
• 1:02:03
Speaker 4: Yeah, not great, it's just good.
• 1:02:05
Speaker 2: Yeah. But I was gonna say it still has some
• 1:02:07
Speaker 2: really genuinely funny parts, and the emotion that Sean has
• 1:02:12
Speaker 2: at the end of the episode, and even the and
• 1:02:14
Speaker 2: the emotion that you have with Carla at the end
• 1:02:16
Speaker 2: of the episode. You talked about that earlier in the podcast,
• 1:02:19
Speaker 2: about how it gave you a lump in your throat
• 1:02:21
Speaker 2: and everything like that because you were speaking your truth
• 1:02:24
  Speaker 2: at that moment.
• 1:02:25
  Speaker 4: But I.
• 1:02:28
Speaker 5: Right, right, absolutely, I think tough like potassium and asked
• 1:02:33
Speaker 5: and TikTok tourice. Those things caught me off guard last
• 1:02:36
Speaker 5: night when I was watching it.
• 1:02:37
Speaker 1: I also, I'm sorry to be I'm sorry to be
• 1:02:39
Speaker 1: the guy who laughs at a fart joke, but I
• 1:02:42
Speaker 1: legit laughed so hard when when Todd goes the wording
• 1:02:47
Speaker 1: of this line is so funny, sir, I farted long pause.
• 1:02:52
Speaker 1: That smell is from the fart that I made. You
• 1:02:59
Speaker 1: know he heard that line, but the wording of that,
• 1:03:05
Speaker 1: the wording of that, I think that's the funniest thing
• 1:03:07
Speaker 1: in the whole episode, to be honest, And I'm sorry
• 1:03:09
Speaker 1: to be so so simple that I love a fart
• 1:03:12
Speaker 1: joke that much, but I just thought the wording of that,
• 1:03:14
Speaker 1: that smell pause is from the fart that I made Meanwhile,
• 1:03:20
Speaker 1: the surgeon what's his name? He's in there, like, what's
• 1:03:23
Speaker 1: what's that smell from? What the hell happened? What's going on?
• 1:03:30
Speaker 4: That actor? That actor did a good job.
• 1:03:31
Speaker 1: Charles kind of a thankless role.
• 1:03:34
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, he's been in a lot of movies.
• 1:03:37
Speaker 2: Actually he was in he was in Dumb and Dunk.
• 1:03:41
Speaker 5: He's the guy dry and right down the middle.
• 1:03:44
Speaker 2: Yeah, Charles was great, man. He he's stuck around for
• 1:03:48
Speaker 2: damn near the whole show. You know what's interesting. I
• 1:03:50
Speaker 2: didn't realize Johnny Castle was in the show that much.
• 1:03:54
  Speaker 5: Me neither.
• 1:03:55
Speaker 2: He's in like every episode, even she's Dug.
• 1:03:59
  Speaker 1: I didn't don't. I really don't remember that Doug had
• 1:04:01
Speaker 1: this bigger role in the show. But Doug's dunks. Doug's
• 1:04:04
Speaker 1: got a lot of stuff going on. Yeah, thank you
• 1:04:06
Speaker 1: guys so much for your questions, and of course, be
• 1:04:09
Speaker 1: safe on the on the front lines out there, my friend.
• 1:04:11
Speaker 2: We totally appreciate you. Thank you so much, Thank you
• 1:04:15
Speaker 2: so so much. Thank you guys, and thank you Ashley
• 1:04:18
Speaker 2: for calling in with your husband on so we could
• 1:04:21
Speaker 2: have the honor of having some husband your boyfriend that's
• 1:04:24
  Speaker 2: her husband.
• 1:04:24
Speaker 1: Okay, good, I thought you might have been proposing for him,
• 1:04:27
Speaker 1: and you just gotta.
• 1:04:30
Speaker 5: You get it. If you get a surgeon, man or woman,
• 1:04:33
Speaker 5: you you marry that person.
• 1:04:34
Speaker 1: Yeah, lock it down, Lock it down.
• 1:04:38
Speaker 5: You're a guy who got a female surgeon. Is that
• 1:04:41
  Speaker 5: you marry that?
• 1:04:42
  Speaker 4: Yeah?
• 1:04:42
Speaker 2: Yeah? Be well, take care.
• 1:04:44
  Speaker 1: Guys, all right.
• 1:04:46
Speaker 5: I thought Sarah had a really nice beat when Sarah's
• 1:04:49
Speaker 5: being overwhelmed for a moment where we're in the closet,
• 1:04:52
Speaker 5: she's so good at turning stuff. She just she's really upset,
• 1:04:57
Speaker 5: and then she turns it. She puts on that grave
• 1:05:00
  Speaker 5: face and it's it's a little gem and I have
• 1:05:04
Speaker 5: no idea of nine to eleven imprinted on her in
• 1:05:06
Speaker 5: some way for that, but she just turns it, and
• 1:05:09
Speaker 5: it's she's so nimble. I forgot how how fastal she
• 1:05:14
  Speaker 5: is emotionally.
• 1:05:15
Speaker 2: One of my favorite lines in the show is when
• 1:05:18
Speaker 2: she goes, I'd let him drool on me, and then
• 1:05:20
Speaker 2: the way she looks at Zach after she says it
• 1:05:25
Speaker 2: you she met that shit.
• 1:05:32
Speaker 1: That's funny. Donald. Do you have any memory of the
• 1:05:35
Speaker 1: fantasy at ten forty seven, which is that post apocalyptic like, no,
• 1:05:40
  Speaker 1: you're standing by a fire.
• 1:05:41
  Speaker 2: I I remember after I saw it. I remembered us
• 1:05:46
Speaker 2: doing that scene, but I was like, where is this going?
• 1:05:49
Speaker 2: I didn't know where it was?
• 1:05:51
Speaker 1: Was the the basement?
• 1:05:51
Speaker 2: It was a basement. You know What's interesting, I even
• 1:05:55
Speaker 2: though this took place during nine to eleven, there are
• 1:05:59
Speaker 2: a lot of moments in the show where I was like, well,
• 1:06:00
  Speaker 2: I don't remember. I don't remember this. I don't I don't.
• 1:06:04
Speaker 2: You know, There's there's certain things that I did remember.
• 1:06:07
Speaker 2: I remembered Sean Hayes and him getting choked. I definitely
• 1:06:11
Speaker 2: remember the last scene with UH, with Johnny and UH
• 1:06:15
Speaker 2: and Judy where he kind of slips and professes his
• 1:06:19
Speaker 2: love for her. I remembered all of that because that
• 1:06:22
Speaker 2: tracked with my story. But other than that, man, you know,
• 1:06:27
Speaker 2: I say this every week watching this show is it's
• 1:06:31
Speaker 2: it's so much fun for me because I don't remember
• 1:06:34
Speaker 2: any of it. It's like I'm watching it with fresh eyes.
• 1:06:37
Speaker 5: If you if you weren't in a scene, or let
• 1:06:39
Speaker 5: me say this about me, if I wasn't in a scene,
• 1:06:41
Speaker 5: I wasn't leaving my dressing room to go watch stuff.
• 1:06:44
Speaker 2: Right, But even when the show came on, tell right,
• 1:06:48
Speaker 2: this is all brand new for me.
• 1:06:50
Speaker 1: But also Johnny, you weren't smoking long hits, so you
• 1:06:53
Speaker 1: probably have. You probably have some of your brain left.
• 1:06:57
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 1:06:57
Speaker 1: So Donald was like, I didn't even know the show
• 1:06:59
  Speaker 1: is about doctors.
• 1:07:03
Speaker 2: I was very young. I smoked a lot of marijuana
• 1:07:06
  Speaker 2: when I was a kid.
• 1:07:07
  Speaker 4: Was that?
• 1:07:08
Speaker 1: So was that your first correct me if I'm wrong.
• 1:07:10
Speaker 1: Was that your guys first scene together? That you telling
• 1:07:13
Speaker 1: him to beat off?
• 1:07:14
  Speaker 2: Yeah?
• 1:07:15
Speaker 5: It's it certainly seems like it in the concert.
• 1:07:18
Speaker 2: I don't know, but well, yeah, yeah, after that, you
• 1:07:23
Speaker 2: and I had so many scenes. You know, all of
• 1:07:25
  Speaker 2: a sudden, I became Gandhi. I don't even know how
• 1:07:27
Speaker 2: that came. Was that an improv from you? Did you
• 1:07:29
  Speaker 2: make up Gandhi?
• 1:07:30
  Speaker 4: Or was?
• 1:07:31
Speaker 2: Okay? Okay? But yeah, this is this is the beginning
• 1:07:36
Speaker 2: of the Cox and turk Uh.
• 1:07:38
Speaker 1: Yeah, your very first encounter you because we were the two.
• 1:07:42
Speaker 2: Athletes in the hospital, you know what I mean. And
• 1:07:45
Speaker 2: so now it was like, oh okay, So it was like,
• 1:07:48
Speaker 2: you know, Michael Jordan versus Kobe Bryant, you know what
• 1:07:50
  Speaker 2: I mean.
• 1:07:52
Speaker 1: And also he really didn't you know. The whole point
• 1:07:55
Speaker 1: was he didn't like you fucking with Carla.
• 1:07:57
Speaker 2: In the beginning, and actually in the beginning, but as
• 1:08:00
Speaker 2: time goes on, the beat that Cox and Turk have
• 1:08:04
Speaker 2: is strictly it's all yo. You know, this is we
• 1:08:08
Speaker 2: have this competitive fire, you know what I mean, and
• 1:08:11
Speaker 2: it needs to be and it needs to be, you
• 1:08:13
Speaker 2: know way we need to fan that bad boy so
• 1:08:16
Speaker 2: that you know, we can live. And so I think
• 1:08:18
Speaker 2: Cox and Turk really enjoyed trying to one up each other.
• 1:08:22
Speaker 5: I did too, but I thought it was a little manufactured,
• 1:08:25
Speaker 5: because again, if the camera is an X ray machine
• 1:08:28
Speaker 5: and you can see how it was a little man,
• 1:08:32
Speaker 5: it always felt a little manufactured to me.
• 1:08:34
Speaker 2: What do you mean?
• 1:08:35
  Speaker 4: I didn't believe that I had that big of a
• 1:08:37
  Speaker 4: problem with.
• 1:08:38
Speaker 2: You, Okay. I always looked at it as he didn't
• 1:08:41
Speaker 2: like that I was with Carla, and because I won
• 1:08:44
Speaker 2: and got that one up, he was always trying to
• 1:08:46
Speaker 2: get a one up on Turk. That's how I always
• 1:08:49
Speaker 2: looked at it. But I guess I just I mean,
• 1:08:51
Speaker 2: even in basketball, even when we played, even when we
• 1:08:54
Speaker 2: played basketball and you hurt your back in that episode
• 1:08:57
Speaker 2: that we do that, even that, you know what I mean?
• 1:08:59
Speaker 2: But hey, yeah, you know, I think also the love
• 1:09:03
Speaker 2: that we have for each other. I remember my first
• 1:09:05
Speaker 2: time being like, Johnny, please don't intimidate me, and you're like,
• 1:09:07
Speaker 2: shut the fuck up, nobody's intimidating you, and you're right,
• 1:09:11
  Speaker 2: You're right.
• 1:09:12
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 1:09:13
Speaker 1: You were always so generous, though, Johnny, with us, because
• 1:09:16
Speaker 1: you know, we we we we knew who you were.
• 1:09:18
Speaker 1: We both loved your work, and I think both I
• 1:09:21
Speaker 1: could think I could speak for both of us when
• 1:09:22
Speaker 1: we were like nervous. I was nervous to work with you,
• 1:09:25
Speaker 1: and I just want to thank you. You know, for
• 1:09:27
Speaker 1: those of you who aren't actors, it's it's the person
• 1:09:30
Speaker 1: who's got more of a resume, and this is the
• 1:09:32
Speaker 1: bigger star. The onus is always on them to make
• 1:09:35
Speaker 1: everyone else feel comfortable around them. And I thought you
• 1:09:38
Speaker 1: always were so generous and never made us feel intimidated
• 1:09:41
Speaker 1: at all, unless it was obviously in the scene, but
• 1:09:43
  Speaker 1: as a person.
• 1:09:44
  Speaker 4: You never did.
• 1:09:45
Speaker 5: I felt like we were gonna that this truly was
• 1:09:47
Speaker 5: even even though Jackie all respect was number one on
• 1:09:51
Speaker 5: the call sheet. I felt like this thing was the
• 1:09:53
Speaker 5: truest form of an ensemble and that was never lost
• 1:09:56
Speaker 5: on me. And if that arising tide, there's the same
• 1:10:00
Speaker 5: horizon tide floats all boats and I thought we had
• 1:10:03
Speaker 5: to do this together or sink. Either either rise or
• 1:10:06
Speaker 5: sink together with Billy at the helmet. There was no
• 1:10:08
Speaker 5: confusion about that. One time, Billy Rosine, I had to
• 1:10:12
Speaker 5: kiss his wife, who played my wife or my ex
• 1:10:15
Speaker 5: wife on the show, Christa Miller, who is a very
• 1:10:19
Speaker 5: dear friend of mine, And so I kissed her, and
• 1:10:23
Speaker 5: in the middle of kissing her, she stuck her tongue
• 1:10:26
Speaker 5: in my mouth, and I was just I was like,
• 1:10:29
Speaker 5: I'm not okay with this, And so I go upstairs
• 1:10:34
Speaker 5: with the third floor where our dressing rooms are, where
• 1:10:36
Speaker 5: Billy's office goes, and I I knocked on the door
• 1:10:39
Speaker 5: and Billy told you saying, and he goes, yeah, come
• 1:10:43
Speaker 5: on in and sit down. I go, I gotta, I
• 1:10:45
Speaker 5: gotta get something off my chest here. I was just
• 1:10:47
Speaker 5: in the scene that you wrote. I was just having
• 1:10:49
Speaker 5: a kiss Christa, and she she stuck her tongue in
• 1:10:53
Speaker 5: my mouth. And he's such a ballmuster. He gives it
• 1:10:56
Speaker 5: a pause and he goes, did you like it? They
• 1:11:02
Speaker 5: did it to get me.
• 1:11:05
Speaker 1: By the way, Johnny, this dovetails into something I said.
• 1:11:07
Speaker 1: This dovetails was something I said earlier. I think Billy
• 1:11:10
Speaker 1: has a little bit of a little bit of a
• 1:11:13
  Speaker 1: thing for that.
• 1:11:15
Speaker 5: It was horrorfying. That's kissed by Christ was horrorfying. But
• 1:11:20
Speaker 5: the boss's beautiful wife. It makes me nervous even tell
• 1:11:25
  Speaker 5: him the story.
• 1:11:27
  Speaker 1: That's so funny. I think I think Billy has a
• 1:11:29
Speaker 1: little bit of a special place in his heart for
• 1:11:33
Speaker 1: man he likes kissing his wife.
• 1:11:34
Speaker 2: I have a question for you, guys, when you watch
• 1:11:36
Speaker 2: the show now, do you feel like we foreshadowed so
• 1:11:40
Speaker 2: much in every epith Like we foreshadowed a lot in
• 1:11:42
Speaker 2: every episode. Like, even when watching this episode, it's pretty
• 1:11:45
Speaker 2: clear that Sean Hayes's character, he doesn't have it all together,
• 1:11:50
Speaker 2: even though he seems like it, Hey, he has it together,
• 1:11:53
Speaker 2: and it's and maybe because we watched the whole episode now,
• 1:11:56
Speaker 2: but every time Nurse Roberts came in to address him,
• 1:11:59
Speaker 2: he always said, no problem, no problem. And I feel
• 1:12:04
Speaker 2: like I feel like that was foreshadowing. Obviously it was
• 1:12:07
Speaker 2: a problem and this was going to be the issue
• 1:12:09
Speaker 2: that broke him. I feel like, if you watch Scrubs,
• 1:12:14
Speaker 2: what we did very well. We presented the problem to
• 1:12:17
Speaker 2: you early on and disguised it and disguised it or
• 1:12:21
Speaker 2: hit it with comedy and other things. But then at
• 1:12:24
Speaker 2: the end of the episode, we always hit you with
• 1:12:27
Speaker 2: the drama to make you feel it, but if you
• 1:12:31
Speaker 2: watched all the way through, we would leave crumbs and
• 1:12:34
Speaker 2: hints that this was coming.
• 1:12:37
Speaker 5: I think, yes, yes to that, and I think and
• 1:12:40
Speaker 5: it reminded me. I'm reminded of it in the first
• 1:12:44
Speaker 5: flashback where Zachi is with his brother and the tag
• 1:12:50
Speaker 5: out is we don't even talk that much, or he
• 1:12:53
Speaker 5: doesn't talk that much to me, And then there's this long,
• 1:12:57
Speaker 5: I don't know, we'll make it up, twenty year disconnect,
• 1:13:00
Speaker 5: and when Tommy Kavanaugh shows up at the hospital, all
• 1:13:02
Speaker 5: that stuff that Zach had, that Billy had insinuated in
• 1:13:07
Speaker 5: that scene yields dividends because they have lost contact. They're
• 1:13:12
Speaker 5: completely disconnected, and the disconnect is profound when they're person
• 1:13:16
Speaker 5: to person. So when Tommy comes in and Jackie and
• 1:13:19
Speaker 5: him don't connect on any level, even the John River
• 1:13:22
Speaker 5: of Jackie's father, they don't connect at all. And that's
• 1:13:27
Speaker 5: all in that first flashback.
• 1:13:28
Speaker 2: Yeah, but not just that, even you missing Jordan. The
• 1:13:33
Speaker 2: first time we meet Jordan. At the end of it,
• 1:13:36
Speaker 2: you're reminiscing about the wedding and all of that stuff.
• 1:13:38
Speaker 2: It tracks later on because you guys get back together
• 1:13:42
Speaker 2: and you do still love her, even though in between
• 1:13:45
Speaker 2: all of that you guys are roaring and you date
• 1:13:47
Speaker 2: someone else, and you know what I mean, Billy, it's
• 1:13:50
Speaker 2: very good at his.
• 1:13:52
Speaker 1: Job, Johnny, did you like this? Did you? Will you
• 1:13:55
Speaker 1: come back again onto the podcast?
• 1:13:58
Speaker 5: Yeah? It seems it seems impossible to unload the number
• 1:14:02
Speaker 5: of stories. And this was a particularly hard episode when
• 1:14:06
Speaker 5: I was watching it. It was just a hard episode
• 1:14:09
Speaker 5: to a lot of stuff from nine to eleven came
• 1:14:11
Speaker 5: back to me, which I don't know if a lot
• 1:14:13
Speaker 5: of people it's a heavy handed way of approaching something,
• 1:14:16
Speaker 5: but people, actors are human beings.
• 1:14:18
  Speaker 4: And I was.
• 1:14:20
Speaker 5: I was really impacted by nine to eleven in an
• 1:14:25
  Speaker 5: immediate family way.
• 1:14:26
Speaker 1: And to have gotten through this.
• 1:14:28
Speaker 5: Episode in retrospect seems impossible to me. And that is
• 1:14:33
Speaker 5: that It's that it's a coherent, well told tale that
• 1:14:36
Speaker 5: goes for twenty one minutes. Is good? That's good enough? Yeah,
• 1:14:40
Speaker 5: there are there are there are levels of good, better, best,
• 1:14:47
Speaker 5: excellent episodes, and this one just goes in under the
• 1:14:51
  Speaker 5: category of executed.
• 1:14:52
  Speaker 4: We executed.
• 1:14:53
Speaker 5: Yeah, there's some funny stuff in it and that's good enough.
• 1:14:56
Speaker 1: I totally agree. This is the first one. You know,
• 1:14:59
Speaker 1: I Donald and I joked when we start doing this, like,
• 1:15:01
Speaker 1: you know, there's gonna be ones that we don't like,
• 1:15:02
Speaker 1: and we're like, that feels this is the first one
• 1:15:05
Speaker 1: that it's something we don't like it. It's just that
• 1:15:06
Speaker 1: it's like we all have this Pavlovian response to watching it, going, oh,
• 1:15:10
Speaker 1: this just feels wrong and weird, and we remember.
• 1:15:13
Speaker 5: I agree, and I'm not discounting to all the great
• 1:15:16
Speaker 5: work that everybody did.
• 1:15:18
Speaker 2: I was about to say, I feel like everybody did
• 1:15:20
Speaker 2: their job so well, though, you know what I mean
• 1:15:23
Speaker 2: at the end of the day, regardless of what we
• 1:15:25
Speaker 2: were going through at the time, if you didn't know
• 1:15:28
Speaker 2: that that was the nine to eleven episode, you're not
• 1:15:31
Speaker 2: going to be able to tell, you know what I mean.
• 1:15:34
  Speaker 5: I don't know. I don't know.
• 1:15:36
Speaker 2: That's probably There's so many great jokes and we just talked, yeah,
• 1:15:40
  Speaker 2: including moments.
• 1:15:42
Speaker 1: That smell was the fart that I made. But hey, wait,
• 1:15:46
Speaker 1: keep her there, keep her here, have her you the five.
• 1:15:48
Speaker 2: Six, seven, eight, Okay, baby, baby, baby Wilder, come here.
• 1:15:51
Speaker 1: We want to thank Johnny c McGinley, the legend and Johnny,
• 1:15:55
Speaker 1: we really want you to come back because we're just
• 1:15:57
Speaker 1: sitting around doing this. Man, we got nothing to do.
• 1:15:59
Speaker 1: We're sitting around watching episodes and laughing.
• 1:16:01
Speaker 4: Yeah, please come back, he answers a thousand times.
• 1:16:04
Speaker 1: Just and now Donald has a very special visitor who's
• 1:16:06
Speaker 1: gonna count us into the theme song.
• 1:16:07
Speaker 2: Donalder Wilder, my daughter Wilder's here, say a five six
• 1:16:11
Speaker 2: seven eight Okay, she said, No, five six seven eight.
• 1:16:15
Speaker 3: Stories that show we made about a bunch of talks
• 1:16:21
Speaker 3: and nurses in Canada.
• 1:16:24
  Speaker 2: I said, here's the stories.
• 1:16:26
  Speaker 1: Next motion.
• 1:16:27
Speaker 3: No, so, Yander Rare you here, Yeader Rare here spe
