- 21:53Corbin Annexation ordinances, firefighter promotions, and arena improvements were among
- 21:59the items to discussed during the Corbin City Commission meeting Monday evening.
- 22:04Commissioners unanimously approved a consensual annexation request from Walmart, located
- 22:11at sixty Stuart Road in Corbin, and authorized the necessary
- 22:14paperwork to move forward with the process. There is a
- 22:18letter we need to send to Laurel Judge Executive David Westerfield,
- 22:23said City Clerk Tory Brock. During the discussion, officials noted
- 22:28the city must provide a forty five day notice before
- 22:31final approval can be considered, with the matter expected to
- 22:36return at a July sixth meeting. City officials explaining the
- 22:41annexation request stems from previous annexations involving nearby roadways and
- 22:47property around Interstate seventy five Exit twenty five in US
- 22:52twenty five East Corridor, which made the Walmart property contiguous
- 22:58to existing city limits and their eligible for annexation upon request.
- 23:03The city had reportedly been in discussions with Walmart representatives
- 23:08for some time before the corporation formerly submitted its requests.
- 23:12Last week, commissioners also approved the second reading of the
- 23:16Ordinance twenty twenty six Dash oh one, which declares a
- 23:21certain tract of real property as dedicated city street to
- 23:25be known as Lincoln Avenue. Read by Brock, the ordinance
- 23:29formally accepts the dedication of the property as a city
- 23:33street in a coordinance with Kentucky's revised statutes, establishes a
- 23:39speed limit for the roadway, and sets jurisdiction and venue
- 23:43provisions for violations. A second ordinance, Ordinance twenty twenty sixth
- 23:51Dash oh two, received its first reading and was approved
- 23:54by commissioners, also read by Brock, The ordinance annexes a
- 23:59track of real property located at eighty four East Windworth
- 24:04Street to the city into the City of Corbon and
- 24:08established its zoning classification as commercial. The property, owned by
- 24:13Phonsie Wilder Post number eighty eight American Legion, was described
- 24:19as contiguous to existing city limits and eligible for annexation
- 24:24under Kentucky law. The ordinance also admends the city's zoning
- 24:29map to official include the property within the Corbon boundaries.
- 24:33Commissioners also took action on bids received for a new
- 24:38outdoor led sign at the Corbyn Arena, ultimately approving the
- 24:43lowest bid from Southeastern Signs in the amount of sixty
- 24:48eighty nine hundred and three dollars. Two additional bids were
- 24:52submitted by DJ Energy Solutions Pro sign Media, totaling ninety
- 24:59six thousand, four hundred dollars and ninety two thousand, nine
- 25:03hundred dollars, respectively, while a third bid from CC and
- 25:08M totaled one hundred twenty eight thousand, nine hundred and
- 25:11eighty dollars and included potential structural teardown and rebuild work.
- 25:18Before the vote, Corbyn City Manager Scott Williamson said city
- 25:23officials believed they had thoroughly reviewed the bids, and the
- 25:26stated that he believed the recommendation would be Southeastern Signs.
- 25:32The Southeastern Science bid was unanimously approved. Promotions in new
- 25:38hires were also discussed during the meeting. Commissioners unanimously approved
- 25:42the promotion of Corbyn firefighter Isaac Napier to lieutenant, following
- 25:47the recommendation from Fire Chief Barry McDonald last month. I
- 25:52promoted Tyler Todd to captain when Eric Philpott left us,
- 25:57said McDonald. We sat down with the rest of the
- 25:59fire fighters and interviewed them and came up with Isaac
- 26:04Napier to make our lieutenant. Commissioners also approved the hiring
- 26:08of Braden Hinkel as a full time firefighter. McDonald noted
- 26:13Hinkel already holds several certifications, including EMT certification, CPR instructor
- 26:20and certification in more than four hundred certified hours. Corbyn
- 26:25Arena director Cindy Creech also requested Commissioners considered implementing the
- 26:32clear bag only policy at the arena, citing ongoing issues
- 26:37with enforcing current bag size restrictions during events. Creach discussed
- 26:44the arena the difficulty arena staff face and monitoring oversized
- 26:49or concealed bags during events. The proposed policy would allow
- 26:53clear bags with specified dimensions, medically necessary bags, andperbags subject
- 27:01to inspection, while prohibiting non clear backpacks, purses, and oversized bags.
- 27:08Commissioners ultimately agreed to take the request under further advisement
- 27:13for additional review before taking formal action under department reports.
- 27:20Williamson also reported the next day, May twenty seventh, the
- 27:24traffic light at Roy Kidd Avenue near Library would officially
- 27:29be removed, with the current four way stops sign remaining
- 27:33in place. I don't think it's going to be anything
- 27:36earth shattering, because everyone has already gotten used to it
- 27:40all and used to it in all that, said Mayor
- 27:44Susie Ramis. The meeting was adjourned shortly after. Our next
- 27:51article is teacher woman facing federal charges and child exploitation
